If you are stuck at 5 PM, you won't fix it "in 20 minutes". You will rather spend 2 hours trying to fix it and still be stuck. Go home, relax a little. The next day in the morning you will be unstuck!5
-
An average day:
1. Start working on feature
2. Finish feature
3. Feature doesn't work
4. Spend 7 hours refactoring and fixing imaginary bugs
5. Add the 3 characters that were missing
6. Laugh and cry, laugh and cry...4 -
How to secure yourself from flash 0-day attacks:
1. Uninstall flash
2. Don't reinstall flash
3. Seriously, you don't need flash8 -
Boss: We need this update deployed and propagated before end of day.
Web: done!
Android: done!
iOS:...
Boss: what's the matter?
iOS: 2-3 business days, sir.
Apple and its app review process. Ugh!7 -
PM asks for an estimate on a bug fix, I say 2 hours, he puts down 4 hours, I finish it in 10 mins. Today was a good day :)10
-
1. Purchased GTA San Andreas from Google Play
2. Always got a download failure at 85% downloaded.
3. Contacted Google support, got asked how my day was going
4. Had no idea how to answer that11 -
Who needs Legacy Code to f*ck up your day when you can't understand the code you wrote 2 weeks ago3

Response time of different people on Whatsapp:
Best Friend: 5-10 sec
Friend: 1-2 min
Best Friend(Girl): 3-5 min
Girl Friend: 1-2 day 😢
Client(when me solving bug): 0.00005 sec
Client(when me asking payment): *Blocked*
😕😕😕😕😕7 -
Step 1: Turn off any intellisense and debug tools.
Step 2: Code all day without running the code.
Step 3: Push everything to the build server and avoid looking at the result.
Step 4: Go home.
LIKE A BOSS!7 -
1. You will write ugly code. Code that is in dire need of refactoring almost immediately.
2. You will write brilliant code. Functions and algorithms that will impress all that use them.
3. 1 & 2 are not mutually exclusive. Good software can be written poorly, beautifully written code can be useless. At the end of the day, just get the job done.2 -
Confession of the day:
1. I work in release mode
2. I work on the main branch only
3. I test on production13 -
Day 1 10:00 am
Login to email account (Zimbra)
Your password is incorrect (I entered it correctly, this was a permanent issue ,used to happen in the company with many employees)
Reset your password by logging into internal company portal.
11:00 am
Logged into company portal, somehow. 2 Mbps internet shared among 104 people, you can imagine the speed.
Reset email password
* your password has been sent to your email id*
Are you fucking kidding me? U have emailed me the password to the same email I can't log in to?
Where did the architecture designer get this top notch weed from?
Day 2
Asked HR to reset my password (using a colleague's email)
Day 3
No reply from HR yet
Day 4
I went to meet HR, she's on vacation. So they have 1 person managing the password reset, for 5000 people with no backup person. Cool.
Day 5
Your internal company password has expired. Check your email for link to create new password. This is some next level shit going on.
Day 6
I called up Internal IT team to generate a new email for me.
They asked me to raise a ticket.
I can't raise a ticket because the only way to do so, is through the portal.
Day 7
Nothing. Btw, personal email and all social networks were banned. You can't even open stackoverflow.
And this was a research lab, amazing huh?
Day 8
Loss of pay for 4 days since I can't login to company portal to fill timesheet.
Day 9
HR comes back. Resets my password.
I try to generate my new password for portal.
The password policy:
Password can't be same as last 10 passwords
Passwords expire every week
8 characters minimum, 2 upper case, 2 lower case, NO SPECIAL SYMBOL. WTF. How long do u think its gonna take to crack that?
Fuckers had a company wise policy to automatically lock PC every 1 min if not used. Who the fuck can keep on using it continuously! I'm reading an article, and bam ! Locked. 2 wrong entries and that's it, repeat all steps again. Fuckers really didn't want to let me do my job, just keep on logging in all day.12 -
I've been working for this company for 2 years, tomorrow will be the first day that I meet my coworkers.
I love my job.6 -
Trend of the day:
1. Facebook is really compromising user privacy, will delete my account!
2. Post about deleting Fb account to twitter, instagram, etc
3. "Ok google, what is privacy?"
4. Find a random app in play store and allow access regardless20 -
Someone wasn't in a very good mood that day :p
Log data from when the WhatsApp for windows desktop failed to install~ 2/25 -
After 2 weeks in vacation, first day back on my job, I spend 2 hours trying to remember my Ubuntu password.
Relaxation is not good!4 -
Android development is such an enormous realm. It's simply incredible.
Even after more than 2 years of programming android apps, I can experience a different exception every day!8 -
My boss is making me deploy a major change what hasn't had proper testing yet on the day I leave for 2 weeks. Save me someone.13
-
Day 2 of writing documentation: still ready to go insane from repeating myself and am reconsidering everything I have ever done in my life...8
-
Worst hackathon experience?
The day after I drunk 13 red bulls to help me plow through the 2 days.
Consolation?
First prize 😁7 -
The three indicators you have spent to much time on devRant while being on the toilet:
0: You reached the post from the last day.
1: Your legs fell asleep.
2: You forgor whether you have to wipe your ass or not.2 -
Me: I can't get a grasp on frontend and nice interfaces...
Friend: it's actually quite easy:
Rule 1 -Don't reinvent the wheel..
Rule 2 -That does not look like a wheel.
Made my day :D1 -
I broke the toilet seat on day 2 at the office and have been watching it get worse and worse until it silently got replaced two weeks later.
Oops.11 -
I hate father's day.
Reminds me of 2 things:
1. My father is a fucking asshole.
2. My ex wife makes it damn near impossible for me to speak to my oldest child. State seems to do the same shit ever other state does to mothers that do this: nothing, zip, nada.
Fuck today.7 -
Today:
9 am - 2:30 pm - customer mtng
2:45 pm - 3:25 pm - team mtng
3:30 pm - 5 pm - sprint planning mtng
Anyone ever literally be in a meeting the WHOLE day? ... 😢 🔫11 -
Einstein once said: "There are only 2 infinite things, the universe and the 40-day trial of WINRAR and I am not sure about the first one"8
-
Day 1: Client requested this change! Please do it!
[Make the change]
Day 2: Hold on, this is a new request and out of scope. we should reject this change.
[Rollback change]
Day 3: Client said they really need it. Please make the change.

Linux set up on laptop day 2: can't make the screen lock after resume from suspend, can't connect to my VPN, can't set key bindings in i3wm... But I did successfully set my wallpaper.10

Cool, I found a bug in Ruby!
And it’s preventing my debugging from working!
Asjfkladfsj
It’s 2:30am and I want to finish this crap.
No, I’m not doing any work tomorrow. I’m taking the day off to sleep.15 -
So my boss booked me a spot at a conference about "the future of online payments" and I received an email with auto created account (there was no sign up) with a clear text password.
I'm feeling pretty confident that I can trust them to guide and advise me on best practices when it comes to handling sensitive information.8 -
So, plans for 1.916496 years?
- Dominate Vue.js
- Finish 2 personal projects
- Buy my gaming rig
- Buy my track day car
- Remortgage current flat
- Expand my agency
- Work less
- Rant less
Not exactly in that order.3 -
I've been looking for a bug in my code the whole day. I randomly found it in 2 minutes today. That seems about right 😑6

Every Group Project in CS Major
Group 1:- Hey group 2 what project are you making ..?
Group 2:- Can't tell , Top Secret
FINAL Day:-
Group 1:- Railway Ticket Booking System
Group 2:-Railway Ticket Authorization System

Task estimated for 2 days
*Half day later*
🤡 : Have you done it?
Me : No, I told you it would take 2 days
*Day later*
🤡 : Have you done it? Do you need any help?3 -
So I've been doing some code jobs now and recently they pushed me to a new level.
This company worked with some silly management app made in cpp which they asked me to edit a little bit giving it another style and some additional functions.
Day 1: this code is a mess.
Day 2: this code is a mess.
Day 3: how does this code even compile.
Day 4: I no longer have faith in humanity.
Day 5: I found my first comment (Yay?).
Day 16: I'm done.
Day 19: I got paid.
If you're making a project in cpp just like that dev you do deserve a punch in the throat.
No documentation, no comments, no patterns, just some thick pasta of poorly written code, names like fCalcAllTaxFilesSizeMB....
This haunts me for real.2 -
Anybody else know that horrible feeling when you're 2 weeks and 1000 lines of spaghetti into what started as a 2 day 200 line side project that was supposed to make your main project better, but has now become it's own life consuming beast?2
-
one day we will see IoT ransomware. Imagine ransomware on your smart car: “Pay 2 Bitcoins if you want to pick up the kids from the daycare in time.”4
-
The worst part of hackathons are schedules which leaves no time for actual coding!
I was once at 2 day event. Day 1 contained an intro lecture, 'getting to know your team' exercise, idea generation phase, idea feedback from industry people, mandatory coffee breaks, and a little bit of coding at the end.
Day 2 consisted of 'adding thet final touches to your hack', a random lecture from the company hosting the event, info from the judges on how to pitch, a trial run of the pitch and then the final pitches...
I barely think we got to code for 3 hours.4 -
Estimations:
2 days = One day of actual coding, one day of doing something completely unrelated.
3 days = One week
5 days = Two weeks
7 days = Forget about it...2 -
Tomorrow's my last day.
There is no exit interview scheduled. I'm not surprised, there hasn't been any 1-on-1's in about 2 years, and any feedback or complaints are never addressed.
Just need to bite my tongue for one more day.1 -
3 Days Group Project.
1. day (get into matter, collect ideas)
2. day (mate was sick and stayed home, I programmed our Java game from scratch 100%)
3. day (he comes again, gets my source code, changes games wallpaper and sets tick speed to 60 instead of 30.
He deletes my version on all presentation PCs because he thought his was "better")2 -
Someone tell them its 2017 already. Saddest part was TA asking me to implement Binary Search in this TurboC++. Toughest 2 hours of my day :(10
-
Time taken to modify the code : 10 minutes
Time taken searching the code to understand where to put the modification : 1/2 day
Viva VB6!2 -
Burnout signs:
1) laying in bed all day
2) watching old natgeo documentaries
3) ordering a dildo for my loud ass neighbours6 -
Something I ranted about 1 year and 2 days ago just saved my life today. Those lost hours that day saved me a few hours today.
I wonder though: if I hadn't written about it on devRant, would I still remember it today?3 -
Buddy's b day tomorrow. Got him everything to build a retro pi gaming station and 2 retro controllers.
Damn, I am a good friend.1 -
Brilliant idea time:
Inspired by @TrojanMorse and his fractal trees
A fractal tree wallpaper that grows throughout the day.
So at 12 a script starts a new fractal and only uses depth 1 (a twig). Then every other hour it branches once more so at 2 am the fractal would have depth 2 and at noon it would have depth 7. That way you get a tree growing throughout the day for your screensaver. Now to make this a thing13 -
I'm having a DAY.
it's like I'm trying to "2+2=4" and hitting "unknown operator =", figure that out, get "22" back, fix that, then math service is down, redeploy math service, wait 30 minutes, that's up, get "out of numbers" exception, turns out a dependency updated and now I have to register what "2" means, fix that, FINALLY get 2+2 to evaluate, I get 5. Figure that out, get 4! 4!!! FINALLY. Push it. Get 55 on the server. Gets 4 on my machine, getting some random 55 from the server.5 -
Soon I have a 2-day course on website creation. Yaaay, let’s learn WordPress this brand new technology !4

2 day national holiday and i thought to myself "aaaah finally i can make up for the deadlines which im behind on!"
*spends the entir day procrastinating*3 -
Trying to fix a bug for 2 days that came out of nowhere. Taking my hairs off because it was working all fine the day before.
Later realized that I was using the wrong configuration file :( -
Team estimated a huge feature with 60 days. Made a prototype in a day, implemented it in the project the next day. Code looks a lot cleaner than a previous similar solution.
Now it’s 90% done. Should have worked with 2 other people. Oh well, sorry not sorry for that teamwork.3 -
me 2 weeks ago: "can we talk about the release?"
pm: *proceeds to circlejerk about story points for an hour every day*
pm today: "why is our release late?"
dear management, go fuck yourselves. seriously, go fuck yourselves7 -
I dread the day that Slack has a “... has read this message 2 seconds ago” feature. Please Slack, continue letting me pretend I haven’t seen that message that I don’t want to reply to.2

This is getting annoying.
For the past >half a year I've been chasing windmills. This is what my BAU day looks like:
- We login to client's network
- We start running some Sanity tests before the actual runs (actual runs are hell of an expensive (financially and time-wise) thing to launch) to make sure environment is OK.
- Sanity tests fail. wtf? Nothing's been changed since y-day!
- Spend ~3-4 hours digging logs, code, more logs,... Apparently some genius decided to change a single parameter.
- Spend another 1-2 hours trying to work around that parameter (since apparently that genius did have a task to do that, so we'll most likely have to find a way to live with it)
- Restart the whole env (~30min).
- Launch a Smoke, Sanity tests to verify env state.
- Launch the actual test
- Go home.
Next day:
- We login to client's network
- We start running some Sanity tests before the actual runs to make sure environment is OK.
- Sanity tests pass.
- Run the actual test
- Concurrency on RDS database is sky-rocketing! WTF did that come from??? Nothing's been changed since y-day!!
- Spend ~1-2 hours looking for anything changed, dig some logs for anything unusual. Nothing.
- Escalate to DBA. 2 hours later DBA says "fix the app". thanks for nothing mate....
- Spend remaining 2 hours analysing AWR. Give up, restart the whole RDS instance. Another hour wasted.
- Time to go home. Out of curiosity run Sanity test -- all good. Run the actual test -- all good. wtf??
- Go home
Next day
- We login to client's network
- We start running some Sanity tests before the actual runs to make sure environment is OK.
- Sanity tests fail. wtf? Nothing's been changed since y-day!
- Spend ~3-4 hours digging logs, code, more logs,... Apparently some genius decided to change a single parameter.
- Spend another 1-2 hours trying to work around that parameter
- ..... I think you know where this is going.
And this keeps going on and on, day by day. Spending the better half of the day chasing windmills and doing our actual work on the last hour of the working day or even after that.
We have plenty of interesting tasks in our Jira but we're squirels spinning in the wheel and never being able to touch them.
It feels like I'm wasting my time. I could do so much more with my time!
[just needed to vent ] -
Never tell normal people (non-developers) how much time it took you to build something.
They will always be like 'I thought that was a 2-day work'3 -
day 1: try not to use ad blocker, and install few programs from several websites.
day 2: format my pc9 -
I thought I would have all day to code after my family went on vacations for 2 months. Tbh, I miss them :( Coding and my cat are the only companions at home.2

Just spent about 15minutes trying to figure out why my beautifully formatted f'{strings}' code was returning "invalid syntax".
Turns out I was in a Python 2 shell. How's your day going? 🙂4 -
Step #1) Teach Alexa to respond to "When is Memorial day" with an incorrect date in the future
Step #2) Ask Alexa, next to your wife.
Step #3) See how long you can keep your wife going on "the government moved Memorial Day due to Coronavirus" before she realizes your just a prankster.1 -
- Procrastinate 1 work day
- Try to crunch 2 work days into one
- Feel frustrated because there is not enough time

I'm so tired yo... I'm on 2 startups, one is mine the other some dude I'm working with. Both sites built in PHP. Another side gig slack bot thing in Node JS. And then 2 day time jobs in which I'm deciding which one to quit out of... 🫠😵💀5

feels horrible spending half a year learning how to use angular in school then the day you graduate you find angular 2 and have to start all over again 😢😭7

Day 1: depressing
Day 2: blissful
OR
Day 1: blissful
Day 2: depressing
I noticed this pattern to repeat EVERY TIME IN MY LIFE.
When something is extremely good one day, I actually try to reduce the happiness because the depression will kick in the next day twice as much.... So even when i get hit by happy days, i am forcefully trying to become depressed in order to avoid being depressed twice as much tomorrow, CAn you Fucking believe me this ? Hhh
Hhhh
hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

i dont have energy to live9 -
i got my account perma-locked on twitter over a joke the other day and the only presented option was to delete my account. Apparently you talk about cool shit all day and 2 people see it, but you make a joke about a bad neighborhood and 700 people flag literally every tweet and reply you've ever made.13

So here we go, the start of day three. A bit of pain in the hips from a badly balanced backpack, but after some adjustments to the contents of my backpack I think I'm ready for another day. 20 km, here we go!3 -

I'm starting to have suicidal thoughts though the Javascript and the whole frontend.
Is anyone looking for a Ruby Developer with 2 years of experience with Ruby, 2 years with pure SQL databases and half year with React?
I don't want to see only Javascript for 8 hours per day for the rest of my life.9 -

EXPECTATIONS:
Day 1: Create workspace, Configure tools

Day 3: Write UT and peer review
Day 4: Push first feature to Prod.
REALITY:
Day 1: Create workspace, Setup configurations
Day 2: Still setting up configurations
Week 1: Almost done setting up configurations
Week 2: New migrations issue, again reconfigure before coding starts
Week 3: Take a vacation
Month 2: Finally things are working but God knows what was the issue...1 -
Hi everyone! Had this app for 2+ years and just now i figured i should register. I like what i see and read on here. You seem like awesome devs. Anyway, just thought i would say hi and have a wonderful day/night!!!7

Just had an interview, but since I am a smart ass I decide that half an hour notice before the interview is OK after working the whole day with queues, docker & php multithreading, so we start an interview over Skype and my persona was able to duck up how simple joins work as well as function which is supposed to return the sum of even numbers between 2 and provided argument... I was off by 2..
Lesson learned never get in an interview after a whole day of mindfuckery .. Never -
So one day I sat in our break hall at school plonking away in my ssh terminal when suddenly someone walks behind me and screams HACKEERRR! When he sees that i start turning around he started sprinting away from me and for 2 weeks he would be extremely scared of me. Thant was probably the weirdest day in my life.1

I used to code for 10-12 hours a day. But for last 2 months I'm hardly coding for 2-3 hours a day.
Motivation??
Where r u??4 -
> client paid 10 years in advanced for service

Got to scratch of one of three remaining old (14years and counting) design mistakes this week.
Together with a colleague we replaced a 1.5 billion row table that I out of ignorance then designed with a 3 column composite primary key instead of an identity column.
Moving the data while keeping all synchronized (the table gets up towards 2 million new rows and 2 million updates a day while constantly being queried) took 1 week.
Just 2 skeletons left to clean out, any year now ;).1 -
First day at my first not-an-internship job, and I have to leave the place due to the medical appointment 2 hours into the day. Great first impressions I'm leaving 😂8

The sales person who is sort of my boss walked in today and asked/told me:
Sales: We are using Bluemix, right?
Me: Yes?
Sales: Learn everything about it.
Me: Explain?
Sales: Spend 2 hours a day for the next 2 months studying up. You don't get less other responsibilities. Your commute is 1 hour each way, right? Put on some videos!
Me: ...
Sales: Bye!5 -

Continuation of https://devrant.com/rants/4723170/...
So last post I said day three. That's incorrect, and here we are at the end of day two. Today was filled with everything from extraordinary views from snowy peaks, to rain and snow being blown parallel to the ground, as well as river crossings without bridges or paths, and a whole lot of soaked socks. After our 22km hike we finally arrived at the outpost at which we were served an amazingly good meal. Due to us arriving so late and having to eat almost immediately I didn't the chance to snap a picture, but I have this picture of a few reindeer, so I guess you can have that instead.
Now it's time to button up my pants, leave this toilet booth and head to bed. Cya tomorrow!4 -
Do u remember when i posted this shit 3 days ago?

1: Difference between crontab -e and crontab -r.
2: The keys 'E' and 'R' are right next to each other!

"PRODUCTION!!!"8 -

Weekend still 2 days away.1 -
Companies new policy.
Deadline is looming, we need to work super hard and be super productive so we will set 3 meeting each day to check on how productive you have been in the last 2 hours...1 -
I estimate by guessing how long it will take me to code then multiply it by 3 and round up to the whole unit.
10-30min work = 1 day
2 day work = 1wk
1wk work = 2-3wks
1month = 3 months
If only I didn't have to deal with other people that take forever....
That and I feel lately whenever my boss ask me for a "quick" change or feature... I literally have to go "down boy down, stop thinking your in a candy store" like he's a little kid.1 -
So trello is down. I need to see my tasks so I know what to work on...

My dream is to one day work on something and be allowed to finish it instead of being toss on new project every 2 days...1
-
3 days 2 nights with only 20 min naps and max 1h of sleep in between. I was finishing my masters thesis. Then I handed it in the next day and everything felt like it is in slow motion? The printing, the going there to hand it in, etc. Couldn't sleep for that day either xD do not recommend. Start writing your thesis on time kids
-
The most tedious part of my day is when WSL crashes. I then have to close my editor, shutdown WSL in cmd, start the editor again, open a terminal and start over. This happens 2-3 times a day.8
-
Multiple all-nighters (all day every day):
1) Working, studying and developing an Android game as pet project. Last few weeks before release (yup, I've set a deadline for a pet project) my day consisted of uni, work, more work and 4-5h sleep.
2) Having worked on my thesis (Development of a CPU/SoC + Firmware + Linux kernel) and actual paid work. In parallel. Because, you know, I need to eat and pay rent and shit while I'm writing the thesis. And debts at that moment were not an option (still made some). All-day all-night all-week. After submitting the thesis I went to the doc and enjoyed 2 weeks of doing nothing.
3) Sometimes on my main open-source project after regular work hours. If I have the motivation and ideas that I want to check out or prove it gets late/early too fast. -
First day back after 2 week vacation.. It's not even lunch time here and I've already used up all the 'fuck!'s for today o.O4

woke up to "Hey here make me a working mouse from these." and then 2 mice hit me in the chest.
How's your day going?4 -

The first day back to work after almost 2 weeks off...
And Slack is down. Time to make it a 2 weeks + 1 day vacation.1 -
After 2 weeks I really like it here on devrant... And its mostly because we all somewhat face the same shit together today, every day. And still we continue.
That is what dev is all about 😃1 -
So it's a sad day that I say goodbye to my moto 360 gen 2, purchased a ticwatch C2 and here's hoping the OLED screen and NFC capabilities are worth giving up my favourite watch...13
-
That moment of panic when you think you have done nothing all day before you remember that you integrated 2 libraries AND contributed back with a PR of feature enhancements. Today was a good day!
-
Day 2 at the new gig, my first developer position. Reading thru ColdFusion documentation as fast as possible.
It still feels surreal that I was able to land this awesome job without a true CS degree.4 -
Had a very productive day today:
1. Fixed a small bug
2. Ordered Tab S6
3. Watched the entire season of a Netflix show4 -
Ok, time to start working on things
*Twenty One Pilots casually release 2 new songs, a music video, album release date, tour dates*

ideal sprint fallacy.
total days 10 , total hours(excluding breaks ) 8 hrs per day= 80 hrs per dev
code freeze day = day 8, testing+ fixing days : 8,9,10. release day : day 10
so ideal dev time = 7days/56 hr
meetings= - 1hr per day => 49 hrs per dev
- 1 day for planning i.e d1 . so dev time left . 6 days 42 hrs.
-----------
all good planning. now here comes the messups
1. last release took some time. so planning could not happen on d1. all devs are waiting. . devtime = 5 days 35 hrs.
2. during planning:
mgr: hey devx what's the status on task 1?
d: i integrated mock apis. if server has made the apis, i will test them .
mgr : server says the apis are done. whats your guestimate for the task completion?
d : max 1-2 hrs?
m : cool. i assign you 4 hrs for this. now what about task 2?
d : task told to me is done and working . however sub mgr mentioned that a new screen will be added. so that will take time
m : no we probably won't be taking the screen. what's your giestimate?
d : a few more testing on existing features. maybe 1-2 hrs ?
m: cool
another 4 hrs for u. what about task 3?
d : <same story>
m : cool. another 4 hrs for u. so a total of 12 hrs out of 35 hrs? you must be relaxed this sprint.
d : yeah i guess.
m cool.
-------
timelines.
d1: wasted i previous sprint
d2 : sprint planning
d3 : 3+ hrs of meetings, apis for task 1 weren't available sub manager randomly decided that yes we can add another screen but didn't discussed. updates on all 3 tasks : no change in status
d4 : same story. dev apis starts failing so testing comes to halt.
d5 : apis for task1 available . task 3 got additional improvement points from mgr out of random. some prod issue happens which takes 4+ hrs. update on tasks : some more work done on task 3, task 1 and 2 remains same.
d6 : task1 apis are different from mocks. additionally 2 apis start breaking and its come to know thatgrs did not explain the task properly. finally after another 3+ hrs of discussion , we come to some conclusions and resolutions
d7 : prod issue again comes. 4+ hrs goes into it . task 2 and 3 are discussed for new screen additiona that can easily take 2+ days to be created . we agree tot ake 1 and drop 2nd task's changes i finish task 2 new screens in 6 hrs , hoping that finally everything will be fine.
d8 : prod issue again comes, and changes are requested in task 2 and 3
day 9 build finally goes to tester
day 10 first few bugs come with approval for some tasks
day 11(day 1 of new sprint) final build with fixes is shared. new bugs (unrelated to tasks. basically new features disguised as bugs) are raised . we reject and release the build.
day 2 sprint planning
mgr : hey dev x, u had only 12 hrs of work in your plate. why did the build got delayed?
🥲🫡5 -
I'm so happy that I have the first working version of the program. Just couple of bug fixing and unit testing and I'll push the code to production.
Day 1: Just couple of bug fixing and unit testing and I'll push the code to production.
Day 2: Just couple of bug fixing and unit testing and I'll push the code to production.

I have made 2 mistakes today.
1. Upgrading from Fedora 23 to 24 on a busy work day - it's taken over 2h now...
2. Trying to switch to a new TTY and launch GDM while it's updating - I now cannot see anything and live in fear of restarting.
Conclusion don't try and be clever with Linux, it will win3 -

Day 1:
Optimizing huge problems for the company. Get mail. *sigh*; Why is your script using up half the CPU on our thin clients? *place in complaints folder and go on*
Day 2:
Boss asks about it during scrum meeting. *Oh shits*
Need a cluster. Been asking for it for months...
Day 3:
Start runs on all thin clients. *Thou shall feel my wrath*
Complaints folder floods.
Day 4:
Expect rage from boss.

How many hours of actual productive work do you devs average a day? Honestly, I think I average about 2 hours of honest, good work in my 8 hour day. Between random meaningless meetings that could be emailed out or just daily distractions (coworkers chatting, my phone, etc). Am I alone in this?8
-
just started a holiday project. creating a silly game using Processing 2. finally done with day 1 drawing, and baselining.1

When you get this great idea at 2 am, code it out and the next day you wonder why you even bother to be a developer

Completely fucked up replication of MySQL servers.
Remote: 2 different database Servers
--> made sense.
Except the misconfiguration. Or better: No configuration at all.
So how to solve the massiv delays and make everything even more crazy?
2 remote servers - 2 readonly slaves for reading data remote (master - slave)
2 local (internal) servers.
Remote - Local Master Master.
Unfucking this cluster fuck was a real nightmare.
It had to be done at night, cause everything needed to be ripped apart.
And the servers were the backend of a warehouse with supply chain and multiple selling channels (Amazon, eBay etcetera).
So. It had to run the next day at 05.00 clock so the incoming orders could be packaged / prepared for shipping.
That was fun. Not.
And the clusterfuck died spectaculously on my first work day - the old DBA was gone (fired....)

1. Putting bits in proper places is fun

This is the one of the best day of my last 2 years struggle.
I got my devRant stickers and
BIG NEWS I got interview call from a company that I really wanted to work for.
Wish me luck !
Fingers crossed !2 -
If I'm not productive during the day, idk what you expect holding me 3h after work will do.
Maybe not keep your employees in perpetual crunch for 2 years, and then berate them for missing the deadlines that YOU SET! -
Developing solely on a VM sucks big time. To last the month with my credits I use a crappy 2 core machine. Atleast half a day every week is spent browsing my phone while waiting for the vm to respond 😣 (right now)2

My first interview question to a project on the second day at my new job:

My boss' solution to whatever problem comes from a plugin:
spam emails to the plugin creator until they dont desperately give up and either block you or they solve your problem, 2 emails a day should do for first day, then increment every day.
I mean, if I ever get to make a good plugin and my boss will ever download it and can't make it work, I much rather remove the plugin from Earth than solve the issue of a spammer6 -
My boss is away for the day.
Spent the day developing stuff.
He calls me and asks me about an app we're making, and I just reply, like yesterday, "you still have to send me the images to finalize it"
Boss: "oh, ok, sending them now."
I'm still waiting for them, I asked them 2 days ago for the first time.3 -
Code on own side project the whole night without sleeping til 6-7am right before going to work because today is half day only in office.
I thought I could manage it but haha totally wrong, First 2 hours were good, during last 2 hours I was trying my best not to fell asleep.
Worst decision ever.2 -

What should I do:
A) 2 week holiday
B) 2 x single week
C) carryover to 2021 for maybe real holiday
D) a day for each week
Choose wisely 😆 It's my effin holiday 🤦♂️7 -
Day #1: You start working on something new, you feel stupid because you don't know anything.
Day #2: You learned the basic concepts. Start feeling so well.
Day #3-9...: Start feeling like you know everything.
Day #?: You start something new, you feel like the last piece of shit un the world.

3. Find a girlfriend
4. Riding my bycicle every day
5. Meditate every day6 -
Like the last 100 weeks:
1. Be a better person
2. Learn something new every day if you can.
3. Get older :( -
Time spend with coding: 2 hours
Time spend with branching, merging, fixing merge mistakes and check if systemnis building again: 4 hours

If being late can be marked as "half day leave"; should leaving early also be marked as "half day leave"?
On a side note, my company already has just 3.4 out of 5 ratings on the basis of 3 ratings, on glassdoor... Now they're messing up with 2 employees on notice period. Both of us are planning to give 1. :)4 -
Should've traded in my pixel 2 for the 5g during Black Friday..... Main phone is a rooted OnePlus 6... Which specs wise and without the bloat ware still beats Pixel aside from the camera...

Manager is also happy that I am doing extra work. -
Well, I've started work a few days ago, and I've got a rant for you as well.
Anyone here ever hear of laughter therapy?
Well my day was normal enough, rattling through the training material, and work was holding an appreciation day with some dogs, cakes, and a crazy laughing woman. She was the instructor for the laughter therapy.
So thanks to my newly found "try everything" mentality, and a senior dev dragging me along to fill seats, I was stuck in a room filled with other devs, being told to smile and laugh even if I was forcing myself to do it. So I did, we went through increasingly embarrasing and insane-looking exercises (e.g. Mime pouring and drinking a milkshake while laughing), until we were told to lie on the floor and belly laugh for 5 minutes.
Anyone here play/see "We Happy Few"? I was stuck standing next to the crazy sow, who looked one bad day away from beating everone in the room to death with a cricket bat!
As is customary for me, have a cute snek.2 -
1) Miss Ludum Dare 40 because you remembered it is on one day after it started.

Split everything into small tasks, no longer than two days of work
Use Fibonacci numbers, 1-2-3-5-8-13
A highly effective developer will produce about 80% of a work day. If you think a task is done within a day add 25% and your estimate is ten. Remember that we use Fibonacci and round up to 13.1 -

Meaning that if you where sick 2 days in a row you won't be paid.
In your opinion:
In the yearly terms update talk.
Is it acceptable to ask the company to pay from the first sick day ?
( It's allowed by law and a lot of companies acctually does it)3 -

One of my teammates signed up for a day-long session on Angular 2, since he's been doing a lot with Angular 1 and wants to transition to the new version.
The instructor spent the first half of the day going through the w3schools tutorial on Angular 1, because "understanding the basics of Angular 1 will help understand Angular 2".
Btw, this was a paid workshop session. -

Day 2 of old company contacting me about unnecessary things that they themselves said isn't really important.
Why contact me then? I don't want to have to start blocking numbers, but it might be happening if the trend keeps up.3 -

Programming lesson #8
Nowadays I write tasks for the next day at the end of my shift in the sticky notes app.
That way it's easier to start off for the next day without trying to remember what tasks were remaining from the previous day.
If tasks are greater in number then it's good to go for external task tracking tools. But for me keeping track of just 2-3 tasks is easier by using simple sticky notes app.2 -

And that you to do a backup of 30gb of data before you leave and upload on the new server.
And in conclusion, as all the love stories, leave 2 day later that you didn't make in time because the original server is veeeeery slooooow. -
