devRant just hit 50,000 downloads on Android (fancy new store badge, yay!). Thank you everyone for being part of this community and spreading the good word! @dfox and I have some fun new features in the works, exciting times!23
-
So i was playing around with terminal apps in node.js a few weeks ago and made a CLI version of devrant. Images get converted to ascii just for fun. This is about was far as it goes for me though - anyone want to take it over? (The code is shit - this was a midnight proof of concept). Currently there's pretty much just the rant listings, the login works too but I think @dfox would need to approve it's use.
Next script I'm writing is going to be a terminal rant posting tool so I can rant from my server 😉
$ rant -m "fml" -f ~/screenshot.jpg -t "lol"20 -
Large corporation. CEO tells everyone to attend this mandatory meeting via the internet.
I work remotely. I can't log in, meeting is full. But our colleagues have made a parallel meeting just for us in the meantime, where I could hear them make fun of the meeting, which is basically the CEO showing some Powerpoint slides to a room with 10 people. Nobody can either see the slides (bad camera or connection) or hear the CEO (crap microphone). 1000+ people watching this "mandatory" meeting that lasted for an hour. Nobody had any idea what it was about in the end. Just slides and muffled voices. -
IF YOU WRITE IN A FORUM ABOUT A PROBLEM AND YOU SOLVED THE PROBLEM, TELL US THE FUCKING SOLUTION YOU MORRON! YOU TOOK THE EFFORT TO JUST WRITE "I SOLVED THE PROBLEM" WITHOUT WRITING A WORD ON HOW THE FUCK YOU DID IT. DO YOU THINK I READ THIS FUCKING TOPIC FOR FUN? I AM ONLY INTERESTED IN THE SOLUTION, I DON'T GIVE A SHIT IF YOU SOLVED IT OR NOT!!!12

Interviewer: "Show me a cool side-project you have been working on!"
Me: "No! I do not have a cool side-project to show you! I work to pay the bills, and do other things in my spare time! Like go fishing, or play video games. Why the fuck are you assuming that I spend my weekends coding for fun!? Do you call random people asking them questions every Saturday and Sunday just for the LOLs of it?"36 -
Just built a custom retropi for the boyfriend for his bday. Custom paint, button, box, splash screen, and games. Fun little project.17
-
You: I am working on an Instagram clone just for fun. Want to take a look?
Friend: Sure. Where are all the filters?
You: They are a work in progress.
Friend: Instagram is better.9 -
devRant terminal client.
Currently it can display rants, comments and images and avatars are
converted to ascii images just for fun.15 -
Just started to dive in to C. Lots of fun. This is my first creation. I'll have some friends to test it for me... >:)13

You know your week starts great, when you receive a call, that the whole shop database of a company is not working anymore.
Turns out MS Fucking SQL decided to drop all tables, just because the harddisk was full.
A SERIOUS FUCK YOU TO MICROSCHROTT!
It's not a lot of fun, when 15 people have to wait for you about 1 hour, until it is restored.
Why does this have to happen on a monday?10 -
Spend half the day setting up a dedicated server at work (including getting all the hardware together) and installing CentOS and tweaking around.
For a client? Oh no, there just literally wasn't anything else to do and I didn't want to sit around doing nothing or working on shell scripts AGAIN. (working in support (+ linux server management) and due to the holidays hardly any support requests come in)
*Hmmm, lets install nginx for fun*
"yum install ngi..."
*wait, let's compile from source and make it more fun!*
So yeah, that was my day, I guess.5 -
A young man was walking along in the forest, when he heard a muffled voice crying for help from behind a log. He leaned over to see a frog sitting in the mud.
The frog looked up at him and said, "I'm actually a beautiful princess, and if you kiss me, I'll transform back into my true self, and be yours for eternity."
Silently, the man scooped up the frog and continued on his walk.
A minute or two later, the frog piped up again, "Hey, buddy, maybe you didn't hear me -- I said, if you kiss me, I'll turn into a princess. What are you waiting for?"
Annoyed, the man stuffed the frog into his coat pocket.
Shocked, the frog yelled from inside the man's pocket, "What the hell? I'm a princess! All you have to do is kiss me!"
Opening his pocket and peering in, the man said, "Listen -- I'm a software engineer. I don't have time for a girlfriend. But a talking frog is kind of cool."3 -

Just for fun, during meetings I look up “toxic workplace checklist” (and variants) and then score my employer.
So far they’ve scored 80% and higher on all lists except one.
Now that I’ve decided to leave, none of it bothers me anymore. It’s so freeing.8 -
I asked: What are you looking for in a developer?
They: Just that he is a fun guy. We'll take your word on your technical capabilities.
Needless to say, I didn't get the job.7 -
1. Started to program Python 3
2. Thought of doing a little program just for fun
3. Now 1 1/2 years in developing state with nearly 3000 lines of code and 11 modules
4. Python skills :)14 -
Friend: Hey can you check my code, can't seen to find this one error, and i have been trying for hours now.
Me: Just one error?
Friend: Ya, just one. And it i am not in a hurry, check it whenever you can.
Me: *understanding the pain of not finding that one fucking error*
Cool, just send me the code i ll check it tonight.
Later that night i check the code, debugg that error, shit ton of more error pop up.
Me: Well i have solved the one error, now i can just hand over the rest of the code to the guy so he can take care of the rest, its not like i am responsible or aything. HOWEVER, maybe i can solve few more, just for fun, i can't just let this code get the better of me.
*ends up clearing all the error after a lomg night*4 -
(I know Linux is not included)
Which one do you like most?
(and yes, it's far from perfect, just a little CSS sketch for the fun)24 -
Just applied for this job and I had to share it here, really cool and fun concept :)

Can we, please, put some substance into our rants? Over the course of the last weeks the amount of rants of the type "%NAME% %SWEARWORDS%" has increased tremendously. You want tell everyone that (for example) Windows can go fuck itself? Great. But why? What is the story behind you're enragement?
Please make this place more fun to browse by sharing stories. Not just a random amount of names and swearwords.4 -
Years ago, when i was a teenager (13,14 or smth) and internet at home was a very uncommon thing, there was that places where ppl can play lan games, have a beer (or coke) and have fun (spacenet internet cafe). It was like 1€ per hour to get a pc. Os was win98, if you just cancel the boot progress (reset button) to get an error boot menu, and then into the dos mode "edit c:/windows/win.ini" and remove theyr client startup setting from there, than u could use the pc for free. How much hours we spend there...
The more fun thing where the open network config, without the client running i could access all computers c drives (they was just shared i think so admin have it easy) was fun to locate the counter strike 1.6 control settings of other players. And bind the w key to "kill"... Round begins and you hear alot ppl raging. I could even acess the server settings of unreal tournament and fck up the gravity and such things. Good old time, the only game i played fair was broodwar and d3 lod5 -
Get children! You'll have so little time over for your fun projects that you force yourself to stop procrastinating and start accomplishing truly amazing things in just 5 minutes here and 20 minutes there.7

People say programmers are no fun!! But they don't know the truth.
We have big Ass container of emotions almost ready to explode anytime. We are spending too much time in debugging stuff one after another that having a free time is just a hoax to us, even when we came back home for sleep, it's only to dream about solution. We would be happy with debugging the error that is not letting us sleep for weeks.4 -
Bad dev practices:
1. Forgetting to version control some fun project i am doing for a long time and then commit everything at once. And forget about it again..
2. I probably have too much love for abstraction. So i abstract stuff just for the fuck of it to the point my friends dont even understand what the program is for.
3. I have no patience and due to that i lose motivation when i think of some idea that is big.
4. I cant keep my ideas small enough, and i dream too big until problem3 kicks in, and then i drop the entire idea.6 -
Am I the only one who is triggered by seeing all of the stupid articles claiming Java is bad introduction language? Just becuase Standford decided to change it to JavaScript? What the actual fuck? How students should learn the fundamentals concept of OOP in scripting language?
Don't get me wrong, I hate using Java for real life projects. But there is a reason why almost every university use it as introduciton language. It's great start to learn programming. Saying that the 'Hello World' in Java is complex and can scare people away, it's complete nonsens. For fuck sake, yes programming should be fun, but it is also hard. People can understand that they are going to learn what 'public static voiď means later. It's the structure of many Computer Science classes. It's the assigments that are not designed in engaging and fun way for newcomers. That's the problem, not the language.21 -
For the hell of it, I decided to see what would happen if I did the infamous sudo rm -rf /*
This laptop had Kali on it from a while ago, and I wanted to throw Arch on just for fun experimentation purposes.
It was pretty interesting, watching everything disappear, and then it froze, at which point I restarted it and was greeted with this.
Bored science has concluded, time to do more bored science.5 -
I created a random website a month ago (a project which took me about 2-3 weeks)... made for developers.
But unfortunately I didn't find anyone interested, just a few users that used it once (ok, I spent nothing for marketing and posted it only on my Twitter and on Product Hunt).
Anyway this is it: https://reviewti.me/
I spent about $4 for the domain, maybe someone will find it useful and it wasn't a waste of time and "money". 😅
Please don't see this as spam, I earn nothing (free website, 0 ads), I created it just for fun and maybe to be a little useful for app developers.
If it isn't for you, just tell me what do you think about it (if you want).
Thanks!15 -
Our professor once asked us to 'mess up' the functionality of a PHP script with one shell command for fun. People tried different things like occupying the port, messing with access rights etc.
My friend just wrote a 'sed' command to replace all the underscores with an empty space...😂
It goes without saying that he stole the show.2 -
Holy shit I never realised how frustrating it is to code for a client the way they want it... I mean I just want to go back to coding for fun4
-
!Rant
Was just reminded of this by another rant: http://www.codewars.com
Fun for practicing code challenges. Also noticed you can give yourself a 'clan', so if anyone wants to sign up put 'devRant' as your clan and we can get a bunch of devRanters together 👍☺9 -
Functional Programming literally has 'fun' in the title; OOP is one letter away from 💩. I rest my case.4

Here's a silly side project I've been working on just for fun:
https://soundofco.de/
It "programmatically" creates sound from code (or plain text) on GitHub. I wouldn't call it music, because it sounds kind of horrible almost all of the time :D It's very simple: The length of a line defines the note to be played. Really just a nerdy bit of fun.
Unfortunately I have absolutely zero knowledge in music theory and I have no idea how to make the resulting sounds more pleasant or even melodic. If you're interested in making this better or helping out with feedback, you can find the project at https://github.com/dneustadt/...
Also feel free to share if you find anything on GitHub that makes for some decent sounds :D (I doubt it)12 -
So the teacher made fun of me today stating that knowing what USB stands for is pointless :/ I thought it was just basic knowledge for a geek like me. This statement of my teacher really infuriates me!!!12
-
I tried to build an application in a container, but the build failed with 54 warnings and 86 errors.
My coworker watched the build fail from behind me, and jokingly said "Well... have fun going through all that".
I told him to wait just a second.
I switched out the image for the build step with a slightly altered one.
Build fails with one error.
Coworker just stares at the screen with his mouth open.
I'm starting to appreciate Docker now.3 -
Sitting down for an entire weekend with a couple of friends, just to work on a side project.
No deadline, just fun. And beer, lots of beer 😅6 -
"Eww that is not Dev-related!"
Shut the fuck up. For me, devRant is a social media for developers and not a social media about only dev-related shit.
"devRant is a fun community for developers to share and bond over their successes and frustrations with code, tech, and life as a programmer!"
You see?
"for developers"
"about code, tech and *life*"
For fucks sake... Stop crying around and just dislike it if you don't want it.7 -
Sitting at home debugging code for the fun of it when... "I would debug 500 bugs, and I would debug 500 more. Just to be the man who debugged a thousand bugs to fall asleep on the floor."1

Interviewed a guy for a senior technical job. I worked hard on making my own questions that hopefully make the interviewee think instead of useless gotchas.
He told me at the end that they were fun questions and this interview was loads better than the rest who just ask questions off of Google.
Having had my share of shitty interviews, this makes me feel so good 😊11 -
!Dev. Just back from the supermarket. Seriously there should be a special place in hell for people who leave their trolley at right angles to the aisle. The place was full of them today. Still it was fun ramming their trolleys out of the way, preferably sending them scooting away down the aisle.20
-
Game dev update: I'm procrastinating the project cuz I need help with stupid background and it doesnt mix well so Im just contemplating existence
But I did this for fun8 -
I pranked my friends ex, nothing bad, just fun. First i screen shorted is desktop, flipped it and made it his new desktop. Then flipped the resolution, so my upsideiwn bf was cool. Lastly I change his mouse behavior, I set it for reversed.
Fun right? A typical person might get a lil pussy and have to fix it. Some might even fix it themselves. Regardless have a lil chuckle.
He smashes the monitor and keyboard, left them, both in a pile.3 -
Once upon a time I sent my CV to a handful of companies. Just for fun I mailed them my physical CV copies + personal statement/motivational letter (3 pages total).
Right at the end of the horribly formatted 12pt Comic Sans pages it read:
"Turn pages to read the Helvetica version".
Never actually wanted those jobs anyway...2 -
Processing is WHAT?!
So is it just me or is processing like the most fun thing to do with coding ? I mean, it's perfect for relax; it's fun like playing games but it still gives you something.
I've never been so keen to code like I am after weekend with processing. OMG!
And it's not just that you can do everything, understand how M$ Paint/Photoshop does things, understand how games work and how EVERYTHING around graphics works, it's also that there are SO MANY REAAAAALLY GOOD resources that you enjoy ""studying"". Things like pong, game of life, Gaussian blur (the one you use in Photoshop daily, yeah, do you understand how it works ?), Painting or edge detection OR ANY OTHER THING RELATING TO GRAPHICS.
It's simply amazing so if you don't know about it, give it at least 10 minutes(at that point, you'll be programming GTA 6/Photoshop 2 or something..), you won't regret it.
Anyaway, feel free to share your creations!10 -
Hahaha guys I got the HTTP response codes tattooed on my arm so I don't forget them! Aren't I fun and quirky? I'm such a code nerd, oh thanks for the likes, Twitter! Wowowowow i am just SO FUN. Look at my nerdy tattoo!!10
-
Just wanted to deaign a typography for each popular programming language. Ideally the font matches the language itself. Initial ideas are: a playful candy font for JavaScript cuz it's so easy and fun to use, n a gothic C++ cuz it's like this epic, powerful (maybe sometimes terrifying) language.
Wouldn't it be cool if there's a set of these? Any professional designers here (cuz I'm just a hobbyist)? Or any thoughts? What should your favorite language look like?9 -
Welp, fuck that shit.
The boss just called me to tell me d good news that they won't need me anymore...
I made them 1 project for about a year ( + fixing/updating few other projects )
... and that apparently is all they need for now and r gonna back to IT crowd ( read this as 2 ppl IT department )
was fun =]2 -
After serveral weeks of stress, bug hunting, despair and fun - I JUST COMPLETED A PROJECT MILESTONE !!
Time for a reward :]3 -
I came to visit my mum for Christmas, and my days are all about changing ringtones and showing her how to change volume on her phone. The worst is that she doesn't even try, it's just easier to ask me. Fun times.2

Well, it finally happened.
After 25 years coding in all types of languages and environments, I’m no longer having fun.
It now seems like it’s a fight to get interested in the code. I used to be something that I would spend hours / days doing. Now I just want to walk away from the code.
Is it true (do you think) that after a while all you see is a for loop, an if statement, a null check and you just think to yourself. Fuck this! Because I think I’m there.
God it’s depressing to think that I no longer find it fun.4 -
So there is this programming competition i regularly enter. I dont give a shit about the competition part, its just fun to make something in a limited time. This year, i was kinda hyped that i threw together a modern stack, with Java Spark and VueJS, that would be really cool to use.
Today we got the requirements.
Php and jquery.
Well fuck me for living in 2017 apparently.1 -
My boss has gone for a long vacation from last week and will be back in Feb. And office feels soooo awesome and fun. No office politics, no senseless meetings. Just pure work in peace.
I wish he doesn't come back only....3 -
I wish there were some sort of nerd club in my city were IT ppl gathered and build a datacenter just for fun13

The more I learn about advanced C++ the more I love this language. C++'s template system is so insanely cool!
Just made a proof of concept expression templates based linear algebra library for my own projects. It was actually a lot of fun to make, and seeing it spit out optimized, loop-fused code with no temporary variables...magic.
Long live C++.7 -
Just finished recovering all deleted files from my old hard disks I found in the attic, just for fun.
I was hoping to find some old photos or something. Instead I found my awful old Qt code.
Back when I started the recovery it was sunny and perfectly clear outside. As soon as I found the code the skies went dark and now it’s raining like hell and lightnings are blasting.
Wtf i just summoned2 -
Legit got excited because today...on friday...one of our servers went down.
Why excited?
Tell me, do you know how fun it is to call your admin if he was "able to get it up" just for him to reply that he is having some "performance issues"?
Lmao it's fucking hilarious.
On another nothe, plz halp5 -
Been working for a while with some terrible code with no documentation that I just inherited from a previous employee
Topic: multi-threaded program in Python
Goal: kill both parent and children with keyboard interrupt
Intuitive idea: check in children processes if parent still alive
Implemented idea:
- parent creates socket connection
- keyboard interrupt kills parent and thus the socket connection as well
- children receive some specific socket error from the loss of connection
- children catch the exception and are killed
In Python 2, of course
I, too, like to inflict pain on myself for fun7 -
Just rememberes a collegue i had for a short period, i was remote and he was on location randomly added, I was told he was a php developer.
What he did was delete ALL the whitespace in the php code and called it optimising, he told the director it’ll make the code run faster. You can imagine how fun that was...2 -
Oh what fun, nothing like an open windows XP machine in a hotel. So many fun things to do with it, sadly I feel if I browse the web for 5 minutes it will litteraly burst into flames and blue screen. I might just set chrome's startup page to www.crashchrome.com9
-
As a guy who really just started his web development life I just say the most fun I have is clicking the refresh button ( or npm does it for me ) and seeing my magic work, unless it doesn't and then I press again , maybe this time it will ..2

Wow I didn't realise how much money I could be saving by actually putting things in my dishwasher when I run it.
Mind-blowing right?
I used to just run my dishwasher empty every day for the fun, but now I get clean dishes too 🤯?
What a wonderful age we live in.
Thanks corporate water ad 👍23 -
Just browsing job postings for fun, see a junior developer posting I thought I would read.
Requirment:
Previous experience as a Web Developer (18 months +)
Who would this role suit:
Graduate Web Developer
Yeah fuck off...3 -
!rant (kind of)
I have the bad habit of suggesting "awesome" and "cool" features for projects and stuffs.. (Mostly just for fun and won't give a lot of value to the project, but would be cool). The less fun side.. I'm the only developer (in most cases..)
Me: Hey, wouldn't it be cool if the user could do this or that, or if this was implemented etc.. ?
Boss/Leader: Oh, hehe yeah, hmm.. *thinking* [a bit later] .. You're right, go ahead, implement that feature..
Me: .. Damnit..
But hey, on the bright side.. It's an extra feature! :D4 -
Just got AWS free subscription, had fun for 30 mins. Now I don't know what to do with it. Can someone give me idea for something to do with it.17
-
Warning: I code just for fun.
Today I finished a website and I asked to my friends to tell me what they think about it saying that it wasn't yet properly responsive and that could be some error, so I asked if they could use the computer to view it and all of them sent to me screenshots of the website on mobile.
I hate them.
P.S. Sorry for my english...8 -
I joined (still under probation period) in a startup founded by an 18 year old.
I work after my full time job for them and thought itd be fun but the kid made a slack channel and asks for progress updates everyday and feels a bit in a haste to get the product up and running. He seems to think I will be working every weekday from the second i come back home till i sleep. I have a party today that im going to and im sure he will ask for progress updates and when I tell him im out and wont work today he’ll probably say something like “the faster we do the project the better”.
Im not sure if i should leave now while its easy or i should stay for the money ($900 a month). Like i really dont feel like tolerating a demanding kid who cant wait for his app plus id much rather be working on other things just for fun like making rust crates. but at the same time the extra money is nice.
Thoughts?15 -
Just for fun and for experiencing the good old days before fancy text editors, I edited some CSS in notepad😂👌🏻1

Germans get made fun of for being focused on work and not wanting to have fun (at work).
But it's exactly what I like about them. I would join and work at a German company in a split second.
Fuck all the small talks and fun Fridays, let's just get the work done, get paid and go home and have fun at home.22 -
Me: lets make some fun thingie
Me: i need a random word api for this
*searching*
*absolutely none*
Me: ok ill just make one
Me: https://random-word-api.herokuapp.com/...
Me, 3 hours later: i never actually made my original idea6 -
You guys choose your specialities? I just find myself falling into them, and occasionally being interested in them. If the two line up, bingo.
Occasionally I get a reputation for being good at something I can't stand to work with though, which is never a particularly fun combination.4 -
Linus Torvalds, while writing about the future of Linux in his autobiography 'Just For Fun', said Linux will be used in cell phones in near future. He wrote this in 2000. After 16 years, we see Android (based on Linux Kernel) in over a billion cell phones! What a visionary! Makes me wonder!3
-
So I took my old C# project "RotatingCube" for a spin and transformed the unreadable and inefficient mess into a different program, featuring better readability and more comments, with multiple cubes at once, without the shitty flickering.
I did that for school but it was quite fun to tinker with only outputting the differences to a previous output.
Check it out at https://github.com/filthycoding/...!
Next I just need multithreading for performance reasons. -
Last year I changed jobs from a large multi-national to a small local agency (which happens to be run by friends of mine).
One of the reasons for doing this was that my work involved more office politics than *actual* software development, and had just plain stopped being fun.
Now, I am having fun again! An example?
For one of our clients we have to connect to (a lot) of third-party APIs. Often even SOAP APIs!
Now I hear you protest "But that is no fun at all! SOAP APIS SUCK!" Which is true, more often than not. 😔
BUT! My friend started an internal API-SNAFU Trello board. Every time you get bitten in the ass by some ill conceived fuck-up of an API, you get to add your complaint to the board.
Beside giving as something to reciprocally rant about, the board also serves a serious function: depending on the amount of fuck-ups an API has been known to make, the price for working with that API will go up.
Who said it doesn't pay to complain? 😀1 -
Devs, post your device's homescreen screenshot here.
Starting with mine.

Now I feel bad for calling myself a programmer as a highschooler after seeing so many people shitting on the younger people. Goddammit I picked up programming because I thought it was cool and fun not because I want money or shit. I'm not the retard kiddies that overstate my ability. I like coding, I just like coding.
Now I wanna quit.7 -
Started to redesign my wifes website into grid-layout with SASS. It is fun and I save a lot of markup HTML.
I try to keep the green theme, but I realy suck at design... I just have no eye for colors. I rather would keep everything white and grey...3 -
Since it's 42 & I am fond of the number..
The 'most fun' I had was making a completely useless feature for our customers that we (our team) knew will be useless (&wrong) once finished and we will have to rewrite it. But we had to do it nevertheless till the end of the week, since the customer is the king. It turned out hilarious and fun because everyone was making jokes on the floor about what idiotic stuff we code and implement. Even the boss was like: yes, yes, I know but please do it, you can rewrite it later to not do anything, just leave the button on gui. It was crazy it was fun, a little bit of mindless coding to lighten up the atmosphere and it (coding & jokes) brought closer the whole colective reaponsible for that particular customer. -
I remember the days when I coded just for the fun in it and not for some client I don't give a shit about2
-
Some thoughts about time relations in app dev:
10% - minimal ui & coding main functions
10% - testing
10% - writing web api just for fun
70% - try to "design" an ui
Am I the only one having problems with ui?? 🤔3 -
Soo... I made a bytecode editor for Java just for fun. On the left you can see the original decompiled class, on the right a slightly changed class which still runs normally. Below you can see the pure ASM bytecode :)
It's pretty awesome for learning how bytecode works (together with a listing like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...)! It also has an AutoComplete feature and some syntax highlighting (which I'm still working on).
What's special about it? It's a pure text parser! It assembles a full class from just a String!
If you want to look at it: https://github.com/SuspiciousActivi...
(I'm new to GitHub, don't judge me :D)2 -
Waking up and finding your Notifs panel full is like Christmas. Slowly opening every mention and ++ you get. Then, just for fun, you read every comment on rants you've commented in. Oh and comments in your own rants are the best.
What a nice start for the day.5 -
I gave my project manager a prototype of the ocr app we're developing to play with, just for fun. The next morning, I enter the office to see this along with a well structure spreadsheet with some 40 columns.
Never underestimate the seriousness of a project manager.2 -
Is it just me, or is the rants longing for stickers and balls (sounds vaguely euphemistic) becoming just a bit too common?
I love some good stickers as much as the next guy, but wouldn't it be more fun to have them for something more, well, rant-y?
But by all means, keep ranting about what you think about, I love all of it.3 -
Coding is like the minds virus for me. I can't stop, but I sometimes question if it's good for me. Work is ok nowadays, but keeping a balance in hobbies is so hard. When I discover something new that's fun it can eat me up for days. But that excitement can leave just as quickly with very few projects ever finished as a result.2

!rant, but some kind of story
I work as a lead dev on a gmod server of a pretty big german community. With the fun stuff, there come the duty‘s to help Jr. Devs or even help people get into Developing. The part, where you help junior devs is always fun, but what I find interesting is the part where you help people learn coding. It’s not easy work, but you learn more every “lesson”. I catch myself exploring and learning something new, even if I know the topic. For me it’s a new journey every time.
Not sure if there are many people who can relate but I just wanted to tell my side on it.1 -
I want to rant.
Can we just have a "CUT THE BULLSHIT" mode in racing games for people with jobs? Like fuck this shit, just give me all the Lamborghinis, McLarens and Bentleys and let me play the game god damn it.
I barely get time to play this game, now why the fuck do I have think about putting in extra effort to get rewards. And I'm the one paying you in the first place.
I just paid you 60 bucks for the game now why do I have to grind out the game with shitty ass cars to get a decent car where the game actually starts to be fun.11 -
Project BluePly, all people are blueplying their pfps just for fun, for another Discord anniversary, so I also tried it, using my DevRant avatar....just don't ask what went wrong...9
-
I just wrote a function with a while loop AND recursion because I wasn't paying attention.
That was fun. Also, MySQL isn't happy right now. I'm posting while I'm waiting for my local service to restart.3 -
I'm glad I have a job where we don't have team 'building' nonsense. We just come in and we team-build on the spot, as in, we get along.
Oh, the nightmare of my previous job where they resented employees for not joining some stupid party where they all got drunk and had forced 'fun'. I like authentic environments.5 -
Made this app just for the fun of it. Let me know what you guys think about it. And do suggest places for improvement. 😃

I have an idea to make server side html. Just for fun. Or for noobs who just wants to know web development.
Example syntax:
<html listen=80>
... something amazing
</html>
Any suggestions/ideas??
(This could also be the much needed revolution for backend)12 -
I've just got in from bar* work, a little drunk*!
My last dev employer actually offered me my old job back, but as HR are so awful I said the situation was past that and demanded compensation. A nice payout agreed for me, for not taking it to tribunal 👍
Now for the new job! I thought working the night scene would be fun, but it's not well paid and the freelance I have is but it's hard to juggle the two.
I might have a break or a month or so doing this, then look for another job.
Anyone recommend good companies LGBT friendly in London?16 -
Fun fact for today
Do you know why we call computer bugs as computer bugs, and not just the formal word for it - "errors and glitches"
Some of you guys might already know this, but still worth sharing:

Well, its nearly impossible to describe what i do/study to my family and relatives. most of them think i just fix computers. Just imagine what would they think when i try to explain them that im learning ML and AI.
here, a Huge part of our economy is depends on IT Industry. But the elder generation thinks computers are a waste of time and they are useless other than for fun.4 -
Guest user by having all non authenticated sessions automatically assigned to user ID 0.
Let's just say.. it's not fun having all guests be able to view each others purchases and invoices.
So we ended up just always returning empty everywhere for user 0 -
Not gonna lie. I’m in the mood to make a game and I’m gonna try it. I think it’ll be fun. Wish me luck!
For anyone curious I’m gonna be using Godot because it’s not bad and It’s not nearly as fat as Unreal and Unity. They’re not bad just not what I want rn.6 -
Just solved this riddle hidden in my friend's agency homepage. www.webfactory.ie. I am not looking for a job myself, but the riddle was fun anyways (despite short).1

I've been struggling with some financial issues lately. I haven't told this to my family bc I am helping my mom with money, hat wouldn't help.
Sadly, I got two general tickets for WebSummit 2019 and I thought "okay, I am nearby Portugal rn, somebody of my circle could go with me and have some fun, I feel so blue..."
No one. Not a single one. Nobody.
"Maybe with those Telegram groups of JS developers..."
No one.
Maybe it sounds like some fraud or something, so they didn't answer. I even mentioned to an old entrepreneur friend of mine, and he didn't even answer me.
Disheartened is the word for today. I don't know, I am not expecting that people can join this adventure just bc is awesome, we all have bills to pay, but at least an answer would be fine.
I know it is not a fun story, and there are people in worse situations than mine. I just wanted to do some catharsis bc I lost my laptop.
I still have bills, two tickets, and a new kind of miserable mood.
Thank you for reading.2 -
This weekend I'm going to attempt to write an application that I'm missing right now. (It might exist already but hey, I'm in for a programming challenge)
I'll probably have a stable backend within the hour, the frontend is going to be 'fun', though 😅
And yes, I'll be using a frontend framework because otherwise I could just as well quit right fucking now.
Its been a while, this is going to be fun!17 -
As of late I'm creating private game servers on my local network in my free time for fun / relaxing
I've already running:
a World of Warcraft vanilla;
Travian version 3;
And I am currently working on a conquer online private server, but getting the right client for it is the hard part...4 -
Earlier this year, we built a custom gift box builder for a local popcorn company. I had decided to use vue.js for the interface which was really fun to learn.
I hadn't used any reactive frameworks like vue before this project, but I was surprised how easy it was to use, and it was so satisfying watching the frontend change just by modifying the data. I was able to easily add little transition animations when the states changed which was really fun too (something that would be really tedious otherwise).
That's was probably the most fun I've had on a project in a while. -
Code = play games
Watch a tutorial = watch a movie
Read docs = read a novel
So I end up being scolded for never studying for my academics and just having fun all the time -
Today my therapist suggested I work towards one day getting back the will and energy to start coding side projects, just for the fun of it.
That was a long, long time since I had the ability to do. Maybe I can get back to feeling that much in control that I can let work go for a day or two each week and just... Have fun coding. What a mind-boggling thought.2 -
Wow... I haven't done complex/algorithmic level coding for maybe 6 months (yes that's how mindless my day job usually is)...
Now I just finished part of the code for a scheduling app I'm doing just for fun... Though there is also a use case at work but I don't have the free time to think about problems at this level... -
Writing a full interpreter for a pseudo-assembly language.
It's kinda fun but the things a bit of a cunt of a problem because I only did this once before almost a decade and a half ago.
getting just the right format and deciding on the syntax is a slog. Just need something thats quick and sufficiently expressive because I'm not writing the assembly myself, I'm generating the assembly code that runs through the interpreter, so it has to be valid under a lot of conditions. -
I dare you to spend the last 3-7 hours of 2020 NOT looking at your phone! Go masterbate... talk to yourself... read a book... drink!.. Play chess... just lay down and groan... clean the kitchen!!! ANYTHING! And maybe even the first 24 hours of 2021!!!!!
Get out of your own ass for a while! Or into your own ass - but out of your fucking phone!!It’ll be fun!5 -
How important is understanding heap vs stack memory allocation?
Who knows--I'm a python developer after all.
Also I completed by first alife simulation. Took me from 7 pm yesterday to 10.30am this morning.
Feels good. I'm at the part of familiarity with the language that my thoughts are pretty much directly parsed and translated into code, without any effort.
Alife's just for the standard math shitposting though. Was fun regardless.20 -
Why does downloadmoreram.com even exist, who's paying all the hosting charges. Why would you want to host a site that continously keeps generating complaints from their more gullible visitors.
It's all fun and frolic for peeps like us, but for the other peeps, I just don't get it!2 -
I've been using visual studio for years and always found debugging pretty fun. At my new job I have to use xcode and FUCK DEBUGGING IN THAT ILLEIGBLE SHIT TIER DEBUGGER. and fuck objective-c, at least you can ignore the objective part and just code c..
I never thought I would say this, but damn, I miss Microsoft.9 -
Just curious; what kind of music do you guys listen to while coding? I tend to listen to all kinds of instrumental music, which I find great for keeping focus.
Please do share if you're sitting on a great playlist for coding, it's always fun to listen to something new!20 -
not really a rant but the more i code, the more fun it gets. i havent really dived this deep into coding and allowing myself to take most of my time doing it has made it more interesting for me. now i want to learn more and start creating personal projects aside from real university projects. people may think its weird that i have been devoting a lot of my time writing code, but i guess they just dont understand the difference of coding for grades and coding for fun.
we are all in it for fun!1 -
Today I went to a computer store,

DevRant-Stats Site Update:
Made some changes.
After a long time with no updates, I decided to finish up my DevRant-Stats Project and do all of my Todos.
First, I added a way to request adding a user if he is not found. (Just search for your name, wait, then click "OK")
So even non-DevRant++ are now able to see their stats.
I also added @dfox and @trogus, though there is not a lot of interesting data yet...
Second, I added a "Details" section and changed the "Other" section a bit. For example I'm using an image for "Latest Rant" and other stuff.
Link: https://devrant-stats.github.io/
Just check it out!
Have fun!

Hi everyone I'm new there =)
Basically i'm just here for the stickers.
But this look like a really fun place to be as a dev, so i'm maybe going to stay a while ;)
anyway have a great day, you can resolve this bug !5 -

Back from long weekend... Already want another...
Perhaps I've finally realized the team cannot be saved, work isn't fun anymore, it sucks being the linchpin, and I'm just not having fun anymore...
And for one I think I've even take a pay cut to get onto a new but better managed and 100% senior team -

Just saying hello. I'm a Google Store chronic downloader and found this. I'm so happy to see so much conversation around coding. I've been learning by myself for 2 months and since then I've been desperate to have someone to talk about programming and stuff. I hope I can learn more and have fun here :)5

I find it funny that, one of the most expected features on Windows, is not even a Windows feature. The teams at Microsoft must be feeling the same way we feel when, after a huge project, the client gets super excited when we implement or change something really, really small, that we did in a couple hours, just for fun.
-
So the gf just came home, threw this in my face (literally, but not intentionally) and said "they were giving these away, thought you might have fun".
I've only heard of raspberry pi, arduino and such, but never actually used one.
Anyone have any experience with this thing in particular? Can I actually do anything with it or is it mostly for learning?7 -
Today was my last day before taking a week off from work. When I originally pushed my branch, GitHub knew I had 7 files changed. I squashed my commits and pushed so that there was one commit. GitHub then decided I had Infinity files changed. Fun way to end the week, posting “I *swear* that I didn’t just put up a PR for review before taking a week off that has Infinity file changes.”6

Just finished listening to devRant's new podcast. In fact, I listened twice! So good, so much info and so much fun. Special guest Andy Hunt, surprise devRant community members and more. Each segment was a blast.
Thanks @trogus and @dfox for a great inaugural podcast. Can't wait for the next episode.
I hope everyone has an opportunity to enjoy it. https://devrant.io/podcasts/... -
My team now does daily mini-standups: what you did, what you will do, what's blocking u
But with this wfh, I feel like slacking more or just seen to have less critical work to do... but not sure if the other guys are just "padding their list" or actually really busy.
So wondering when I have nothing to do for work/no defined deadlines or deliverables... How do you look busy?
I do have a lot of optional tech debt improvement work I could do but basically these are like backlog... And not really fun.6 -
Having that teacher that just laughs at you and makes you look like an inferior piece of sh*t just cuz you ask a question in CS class..
Any question for that matter
And of course he is the head of department...
And with that: hi guys, i'm new, seems like a lot of fun here :D1 -
People sometimes say "you work too much" but the truth is most of the time I'm just coding for fun. It's rare to say, but at least to me, and surely many of you guys my work is one of my hobbies. It sucks that many can't understand that.1

If I can’t find software I’m looking for it I don’t like the options I can just make it, it gives me the ability to automate tasks, it’s fun and it gives me a logical outlet.2

void rant(){
Pokémon go is fun, but it's not great.
Doesn't everyone think that it would be better to actually battle for your Pokemon's level?
They could perhaps keep a similar evo system (Everytime you fight you get like 1 poke candy)
This catch and release system is getting kind of annoying in my opinion.
I want to get attached to my Pokemon and actually feel like a trainer, not a garbage disposal for Pokemon.
They already have a battle mechanic, they would just need to enable ai battle algorithms and ambient encounters.

Just spent the whole morning making a custom loading indicator for our app (an animated version of our logo). Animations are fun!3

Just out of curiosity, will anyone be at VEX Worlds in Louisville, Kentucky?
For those of you who don't know, it's a robotics competition.
Currently waiting for my sponsor and rest of the team to get through TSA. (precheck is fun)3 -
Just published my first internal app, which is nice
We’ve also now started using GitLab, so I need to work out an easy way for use to transfer all of the reports from SourceSafe.
There’s only about 500+ of them, should be fun2 -
This articles are what is wrong with developers. They build these stereotypes for us.
https://utemissov.com/i-am-senior-d...
If it was funny article, just for fun I get it. Er all laugh. But this writer seems pretty serious in this.
I've been working for 3-4 years as developer. I still use Google every day. Does that make me a bad developer ? No.
Yhese are new things every day that we learn. It is yech world. It changes every day.2 -
I am able to work 15 hours on my pet project then take a short walk outside and feel like a balanced man, but even just an hour on a commercial project is a massive effort even though the code is clean, the stack is modern, I'm good friends with the client and I also like the concept. The mere fact that I'm doing it for money takes the fun out of it.3

Question here - what do you guys think of Kotlin?
Do you also think it'll be sufficient to learn Kotlin and not java to programm for Android?
I just began the transition, it's fun playing around with it, but a friend of mine wants to learn Kotlin to learn Android programming (and not java, he only has java basics).
What's your opinion on all this?12 -
Don't you just love thise dev days that just flay by, looked at the clock now and its just after 5pm,been coding pretty much all day.
Was reading up on progressive Web apps last night and just as a quick test made my own website one, so this morning through I would take the next step.
Few months ago I had made an events list app for android, also just for fun, but I point blank refuse to take it to ios as I see no reason to spend nearly 6 weeks salary on a Mac book because they a bunch of dicks, not to mention the $100 you need to pay each year just for them to annoy you.
Anyway, so after a quick update to my api, no thanks to Gitlab. I put together a fully offline capable pwa in react. So awesome how simply it really was, it's basically done, just needs some polish.6 -
This is a funny one:
So I’m in school and it’s time for midterms. Our assignment is spending 3 months building an application of our choice, what did I choose?
A social media application in Kotlin
(I’ve never used kotlin i just thought it’d be fun to learn)
I get to my first class/build review and everyone else smarter than me chose calculators, timers, dice rollers, and dnd glossaries why am I like this1 -
Project management 101:
1) For a new project, pretend it is similar to a project in currently in development
2) Proudly state that everything can be copied from the older project, so the schedule of the new can be tightened
3) Calculate the new schedule based on the "just copy and paste" effort.
4) Now the new project will be finished before the older project
5) Enjoy the applause from upper management for the successful project that hasn't even begun yet.
No, this does not belong in the joke category.
That's gonna be fun...1 -
Day 5 of devWholesome...
It's almost halloween! Today is a day for relaxation and carving pumpkins. While halloween may be less exciting this year we should try and make the most of our circumstances. Dress up and have fun! Even if its just with your family dressing up is so fun. Carving pumpkins and baking are also super fun. We can all celebrate even if we can't necessarily go outside. And as always, make the most out of your day!11 -
Started a new job this week, picking up the front end development of a property management system, since they're old developer just left.
Oh my god was his code bad, inconsistent use of js versions e.g only sometimes using lambda for anonymous functions, variable names that were a single letter, no comments, no documentation, and over 30000 lines split into almost 30 js files, following the logic of it is as fun as a hedge maze with no exit.2 -
Release on Monday === almost 10h of code today... Though it's just an internal release, so not that serious really. Though it's be fun to have something we've been working on for half a year working decently the first time people actually get to try it... Well, well...
-
I remember the first device I programmed on it... Ordisavant.
It used to be a classic question-answer machine (with multiplayer !), And ... Basic language!
I was so proud to make music with beeps, or a calculating machine, just for fun.
It was hard to read a program line by line, but it was so cool for me.
I was nearly 6 when my parents bought me this really great toy.
I wonder if anybody know it?2 -

HOD keeps coaching me in regards to my new role as a manager for my institution. I really like it, the man has a lot of knowledge and would show me stuff that not only deals with my job, but his as well. Thus far everything has been working rather smoothly, mind you, i have been acting manager for more than 6 months thus far, but they just made it official after our vp conaidered that most of the applicants for the manager role were not as qualified as I was, kinda had the advantage since I wrote the job requirements.
All in all it has been fun, stressing, but fun. -
Just switched from Debian to Ubuntu, should have coded for a project today... But I passed hours playing freeciv... At least I had fun!!

Why the fuck does windows use 100MB for the efi partition? Like oh hey I will exactly allocate enough space for me. Oh you want ArchLinux and NixOs too? I just love code-golf, I only started recently, but sometimes it's nice to fuck all coding conventions, missuse lazy evaluation and abuse scope leaking.
I'm normally really tidy with formating and whitespace placement, but code-golf is also a testing field for uncommen constructs and I think it can give deeper insights into a language.
I don't like languages specifically for code-golf though, these are just stupid and no fun (at least for me).1 -
I just spent 3 days with 1 or 2 hour of sleep just for learning a new way to code. Not a project it just for learning. And it make me crazy i cant stop thinking about that. And now im not sleeping at all and code almost 24 hours. But i feel a lot of fun while writing a line of code. I enjoyed every sound i made with keyboard.
Im soo happy now i learned a lot of things. I dont know how to stop and i dont want to stop coding.
I dont know what im talking but thanks devrant for letting me post this shit.5 -
Have you ever thought to send a security code to the email the user put in the sign up form just to say him later "the password must contains at least 8 characters, etc." and ask him to fill the form again from scratch?
Who is so dumb to put the input check in this order? Honeywell.
- The email is correct?
- Ok, send a code and ask to confirm it
- The password meets the requirements?
- No, ask to confirm the email again just for fun.
I'll just ignore the waste of server resources to send N * Number of users emails for no reason.2 -
I was on glassdoor today, and a survey came up. The survey looks like market research for a product that sounds like it will be exactly like one of my side projects... Deciding if it's worth scrambling to beat them to market with what's barely a MVP and no marketing resources, or just chalking it up as fun and good experience.6

Least successful...
In a nutshell, an multi version http client for a elasticsearch.
It supported ES 1.7 up to v7.
With an reduced future set, but all in all it allowed doing everything ES offered - just not for one version, rather the whole monty.
For various reasons I wasn't allowed to opensource that...
Which brings me to the least successful part. The client is a beast and would be a blessing for a lot of people I'd guess, but it's sadly covered by more legalese than one could imagine.
Think of legalese as in "Angel - Wolfram and Heart" legalese. I wouldn't be surprised if some part of the contract was written in blood.
... And least successful as in: Nope. Never gonna do that again.
Abstractions necessary for supporting multiple versions are are really painful.
Having an E2E test suite consuming > 64 Gigabyte of RAM for testing against several ES docker instances in parallel isn't fun.
Nothing of that project was fun.
Still gives me nightmares.

Hello and welcome come to hell for developers. Take a seat at any open computer.
You may have noticed we did away with the fire and brimstone.
Instead we just have you maintain the legacy code from your first job.
It's genrally html, php, javascript, and css all on the same page and all mixed together.
We would say have fun, but that's not really the point. -
First patch for buildroot submitted and added applied to master!! 😁
I had the impression that git (like, more than "git add ." was just too complicated and that making patches was some sort of dark magic using some obscure unix tools.
Well, it turns out that is actually pretty easy, fun and exhilarating!!
Looking forward to build up until I'm making contributions to the kernel! 🤓 -

Somehow I always feel like shit after a party. But not because of the alcohol. I'm not even drinking that much anymore. And it's not because of the party either. I mean it was fun, I got to talk for quite some time with long time friends, we all had a blast... For some reason I'm just sad. Actually not sad. I don't know how to describe it. Like I want to walk down the yellow lit streets of a city at night, alone with a beer in my hand. That sort of feeling. Being alone in an empty city just walking doing the streets. Maybe doing something stupid. I don't know 😔
just thought I'd share 😔5 -
Best: I started a little game project with a coworker for our "8 hours a month" research/fun time.
Worst: I can't get used to be "just a soldier" on my actual team.3 -
I'm developing a new (just for fun) programming language and I'm wondering what features I should add next? These features are already implemented:
- Printing text
- Variables
- user-input
- Datatype conversion (String, Int, Float, Bool, List, Dictionary)
- lists/arrays
- dictionaries
- Sorting
- Shuffling
- random numbers & choices
- Math stuff like: log, abs, floor, ceiling, sin, etc...
- Time & Date
- Working with files
- If-else statements
- Ternary operators
- Loops (for & while)
- Functions
- Classes
- Error handling
- Importing libraries & other scripts
- Arrow/callback functions
- Escaping (\)
is there anything you often use missing?11 -
I signed up for a web developer job... I am now making programs in VB.NET
This was not what I was expecting, however I am completely fine with it.
Crash course learning is fun. Just know that the first hundred programs i write will be really unoptimised. -
I fucking love my SD card reader driver fucking up my whole system. How did that driver even pass BayHub's fucking QA, causing a bluescreen of death right during reboot of Windows? Anyways thanks Microsoft for that nice new bluescreen not telling me anything about the fucking problem why Windows just crashed. But at least it looks nice, so that it's more fun working all night and half a day to find the fucking problem myself. Fuck this.1

Starting to feel burnt out. Past 2 days have been a struggle to be productive. And it's been a week since I've bothered turning on my 3d printers to try and make anything fun or even just tinker
Once my manager is back I'm gonna request a week off for the soonest he'll approve. Hopefully that'll help. Probably will just video game and read that week lol -
Hardware Developing.
My current school project where I build a gps thief lock for my moped had me realized one thing. I don't want to go into Hardware Developing. The first problem took me about 4 months until I finally gave up and solved it differently. And this goes on and on and on. You fixed something and the next day it doesn't work anymore for some reason. I never had this problem when coding. It's fun to do stuff with electronics but coding is just way more rewarding. Anyone else had the same experience?1 -
My computer started crashing two days ago. Logs say its the audio driver. Now I wanted to start the diagnosis just for fun. Guess what? Broke up with my girlfriend due to ongoing stress to commit to the relationship, to perform at my current job, graduating early next March, looking for a full time job/studying for interviews, and going to school.
We never really planned long term and we were just in the relationship to have fun, but man do breakups suck.
I want to be able to focus on myself so I can set myself up for greatness in the future. Unfortunately that means sacrifices have to be made so I don’t lose my mind. Oof4 -
Applying for an entry level software job and having the "let's do a hackathon" project. It's super fun cos I know the effort I put in doesn't actually matter since you'll just choose someone more experienced. But I still have to go ahead and put in max effort or you'll have a reason to call me lazy :(

I haven't touched my OpenVPN server configuration in almost a year. Everything seemed to "just work" the way I wanted it.
I have now just found out that all ipv6 DNS queries were actually going to the wrong ip.
Why am I such a magnet for stupid shit like this?
Every time I try to do something beautiful, elaborate, complex, I always get some small shitty detail wrong.
It's like "close, but no cigar".
Every.

Bonus fun fact: I only found out thanks to Windows' DNS leak feature. Thanks, Windows!5 -
Why? Why?
Of you, you were the last I've expected such failure and misery...
Not once, not twice, but I have you a chance so many fucking times...
I won't deny it, we've been through good times, done so may things together, and I admit that I'd never be able to work without you.... this codependence is just too damn fixated...
But, I think I should part ways with you, I'll visit sometimes, not just to have fun, but mostly because of work matter.

My old client, contacted me for a new project. He contacted at the right time when I'm getting rejected for jobs and just simply being bored with college. Excited to have extra cash to have fun at college and have a working purpose.2

I just finished my second semester of computer programming. I then say to myself : "Let's use my new knowledge to make the program I worked on for fun two years ago better and more efficient!".
It was a bad idea. -
So lately, I've been screen recording when I am working on my projects just for fun. I'm using Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS (Bionic Beaver) and SimpleScreenRecorder for screen recording. I'm using VidCutter for video editing but for some reason, it's giving me some errors and not able to save my edited videos. I don't want to do heavy video editing. I just want something like Windows movie make if some of you remember that.4

This year I started watching animes 😅.. and watched 30+ anime. also got hobby of editing anime clips just for fun and it turned out.. good. I got 500 subs on YT and 8k on snap 😹. good time pas when not doing coding 🥱1 -
I cycle between games I play. I am now back to Minecraft. Playing FTB OceanBlock. It is progression lite. Less of a grind with short and long term rewards. It is like a skyblock, but you can start on an actual island. I am really enjoying the mods FTB developed just for this modpack. The modpack has plenty of tech in it to satisfy my need to build something purely for fun.5

i found playing with arduino is never-ending fun. and then i tried Raspi and feeling the same. now i buy a bunch of raspi and trying to cluster them up, just for another random project.
yeah this is clearly nonsense. this is myself when my boredom gets high enough. No, vacation is not helping, trust me i've been camping in a jungle for 5 days and the next week i go to the beach. this is bad.
making things worse, My way of life is like any ordinary people (or maybe a developers) but turned upside down for example I program, learning for fun, and going vacation is just another medical need that i need to follow.
I am an university student, studying IT. I've been programming since 6, and geeking anything around technology and astronomy till now. this is my third semester and i don't get challanged enough for this kind of curricullum. i need some kind of project that even i don't think about any number of money anymore, but just enough to challange me up. just need to get rid my boredom.
sorry for ranting from a to z, this is just buzzing around my mind. -
Is there anyone who actually likes using Angular?
I decided to learn it (im backend only for many years) to be less clueless in the frontend world.. and so far i find it horrible.
Is it just a "culture shock" or do frontent angular devs also find it.. not so fun to use?
What i dont like so far is the inconsistency of syntax.. i feel like similar things done differently and not following rules that can be learned, i can't remember/guess anything, everything needs to be googled
i.e- `*ngIf` vs `[ngSwitch]`
Not to mention 3 different syntaxes to simply bind a property..
I tried vueJs about 3 years ago and it was so fun and EASY20 -
Every time I see someone praising the intelligence of the algo I imagine dfox and trogus sitting there laughing their asses of trying their hardest not to tell everyone it isn't that intelligent just has convenient timing
Almost like the texts in school that were written for fun but the teachers somehow made up the authors whole life story just by reading a line.
Apologies if the algo really is this intelligent allmighty creature2 -
Contemplating buying a domain for 1€/year for my personal projects.
I don't even need it really. I'd just mess around with it and attach it to a random vps or something, just for fun.
My hands are itching. Please stop me!6 -
So we need a plumber, but first, show me some plumbing that you had do just for fun

Today's progress. Updated the cms to update category titles :D So when you click the edit link, it displays the current category title in the input field. Then you just change the value and submit it to update the database info for that specific category. Fun stuff! -
fml. too tired to learn something new. after staring at the screen for half an hour i give up, shut down brain and await to wake up more frustrated because lack of creation.
thought i'd spend a good time coding during my vacation but instead i am exhausted of home restauration. i can hardly remember when was the last time i did something just for fun and not because it simply had to be done.1 -
So at work I still haven't gotten enough time to try/learn Docker/Openshift...
Should I just login on weekends to play with it, create some small projects to see how it all works?
One part of me says it my boss really want me to learn it, then he should clear the time for me.
The other part is like "I'm learning this for my own good and it might be fun since I'll finally be doing something new... And then I'll be the smartass on this too"5 -
So there is this Summer School happening in Banglore, IISc on 2-7 july. Just wanted to know if there is anyone from devrant who got selected for it? Or If any devranters are from IISc.
Would be fun to meet my fellow devranters there. -
In the past, apps I've written have used a flat file backend. It's very fast, but obviously clunky to have a big structure of flat files for an app. It ran circles around framework-based RDBMS backends, as performance is concerned, but again, it was clunky. Managing backups and permissions on tens or hundreds of thousands of small files was no fun. Optimizing code for scaling was fun- generating indexes, making shortcuts -but something was still missing. Early in 2017 I discovered redis. A nosql backend that just stores variables and lives almost entirely in memory. Excellent modules and frameworks for every language. It was EXACTLY what I'd needed, even though I didn't know I did. I spent a good deal of time in 2017 converting apps from flat files to redis, and cackled with glee as they became the apps I wanted them to be. Earlier this week, I started building my first app that started with redis, instead of flat files, and I can't stop gushing to anyone who will listen. Redis for president!

finally after months and months of just planning and doing boring stuff a piece of code that was really just fun to code and plan for some days:
i just wrote my first "real" parser for a simple DSL. so much fun! i just really can recommend that to everybody.
i've use a parser combinator. the concept of this parser combinator ist to combine simple parsers (like when it starts with a number or a "-" and continues with numbers then its an integer etc) into a big one. i've written it in c# and used "Sprache" first and after some time i switch to "Superpower". a really great lib, but lacks a bit of documentation. anyway, i've your're interested in these things and want learn how your "daily code" gets parsed i would recommend that to you! :)
greetings to all fellow devRanters and happy coding / parsing! :)1 -

The most fun I ever had coding was when I first discovered Kotlin. After using java for most of the time I've been programming, Kotlin felt like a godsend. When working on converting one of my old projects, I was amazed by the reduced verbosity and just how clean it felt.
To any devs that still use java at all, do yourself a favour and take a look at Kotlin (kotlinlang.org)1 -

Just wrote the first part of what will become a rather large Go project!
Almost the whole thing is gonna be pluggable, which adds an extra challenge, but nevertheless, the is gonna be a fun ride!
Also, it's gonna be Open Source, but until I'm at a reasonably stable version, I'm gonna be leaving it closed. Lmk if you're looking for something to do and want to join, this is gonna be a big project.7 -

Hello fellow ranters.
I'm looking for some inspiration in the kitchen.
Lately I've been on somewhat of a health binge. So I'm looking for some ways to make my dry and uninteresting food more interesting. Like a sauce or something.
I usually like hummus a lot. But it's getting old. Does anyone have any fun I can take inspiration from?
I'm not looking for recepies, just inspiration.
Don't know if I need to say this but obviously I'm not looking for unhealthy stuff. So nothing too fat.12 -
How do you guys explain to your CEO, PM, boss [whatever] that you cannot give them accurate time estimates for debugging? 😅
If something i made has a bug, and uses external libraries, not even debugging my code (more like, how i used / implemented something has a problem), i obviously have to first of all check what the hell is wrong ! I dont just make bugs for fun and happen to know exactly what is the problem and therefore the solution ... -
linux and microsoft taking their battle to another level.

So i got this service i made for fun and learning. Theres many providers in it for money, not me, only a little (lets not lie to ourselves).
Id just like to have a handful of happy clients to make it pay for itself so i dont lose money.
I have no idea how to advertise or gain clients. Those potential clients i cling with are from US and the server is in EU, and i wont convince anyone to buy something i wouldnt buy myself.
I suck at marketing.2 -
I’d either advise a small break where you just focus on other hobbies for a few and let yourself relax,
or I would say learn something new like a new programming language, or a new area of programming (like game development or web development) and just try to make your own projects and stuff that you find fun or new,
or maybe focus on something different in tech, like try IT, Networking, Security, etc.
I suppose it would depend on the person/circumstance.2 -
Made me think and treat other people like disposable objects.
I also try to send as few packets to them as a result, u kno', to keeping the noise down.
Nah, just kidding.
But it has given me a solid foundation and framework for understanding for understanding so much in life..
Programming have also granted me something I continue enjoying and that I don't grow bored of quickly...
Particularly object oriented and event driven development have given me a pretty good ground to support me, on my personal endeavors onto noeroscience and understanding of the human mind..
Just for fun and curiosity tho :) -
Wk49 - Started by learning the basics from a C# book when I was around 14, then found a project I thought would be fun and started programming. My logic worked but wasn't the most efficient, but as I found more projects to do, my skills got better.
I'm now a full time programmer for a large company, I don't have any formal qualifications but now studying MTA.
You don't need uni to get a job in programming, just a passion for learning and patience. -
! Not a rant about Linux being better than Windows.
I used to ignorantly think that but experience and awesome community's like this have taught me better.
At a previous job I worked with Linux for ages and git used to how streamlined it is when working with a console. I then moved to Windows (to make games I'm Unity3D, which was awesome!) and found myself pining for a decent console. I finally found ConEmu which has a multi tab feature!
Just wanted to share this, knowing it made my life way more fun!6 -
I've been playing with code for years, but only finally started trying to make it profitable by working through making websites for cash. A friend of mine is just getting into it brand new and is really dedicated. He is going to learn fast and I'm going to be able to walk him through a lot of my mistakes to move much faster than I did.
Is it bad that my favorite part of this relationship is that I will have someone that understands me when I make fun of jQuery? -
The new job is sucking all of my motivation away. Been a while since I’ve did any coding just for fun. It’s tedious to even start learning new things after work.. how do you people deal with it?7

I'm just testing out some code for Spring Boot with Spring web. Whilst inspecting Spring's HttpStatus enum I suddenly realized there are a lot more HTTP status codes than I had estimated. I knew there were many, but woah that's a lot.
Check it:

On a side note, it really helps to debug work stuff at home. More concentration, more time and such.

After redhats totally dick move, who would actually stay with openshift paas? Theyll just take v2 down with a month notice and think no one is affected. They could do that to v3 too one day, they clearly dont think about the customers. I guess openshift isnt for production after all, only for fun.10

Previous job I worked, we had a system for taking bookings. I may have made a slight miscalculation in implementing the payment api. Which resulted in people being double charged, undercharged etc. Tbh the payment gateway was ancient and we had to grapple with their SOAP API not fun. But just shows we all made mistakes, suppose it's how you deal with them, when they crop up that defines us as devs.

I used to love coding. I have ASD and it was one of those rare things I could just do for hours without realising the time. I used to do my own projects, or at least plan them.
Now it's my job to code (& design when I don't have a pleb project, software engineer). I still kinda like to code but as I *have to* code, I just hate it.
Every fun thing that turns to work just turns to torture. Maybe I'll break my arm slipping this winter and have to have an extended sick leave...3 -
Question.
I recently got an Asus K53S for free, without HDD/SSD.
Im looking to purchase a cheap but kinda reliable and fast SSD, at 64GB or more. Money is an issue, and the laptop is just for pure fun, so id rather get bad quality and save some cash, rather than spending alot.
Does anyone know where i can purchase that, or have experience with cheap/trash SSDs? Any recommendations appreciated.
If its shipped from outside EU, the price should be $12 or less, and i doubt thats possible.24 -
The timing for this weekly rant is quite perftect, as I have actually just finished rewriting JavaRant! :D I redid a lot of work tried to make it very easy to use, and I think it has improved a lot.
This was also a nice occasion for me to set up Jenkins on my personal server to use that as a CI server (not that it's really necessary, but it is fun).
If you like it, check it out on github: https://github.com/LucaScorpion/...
And feedback/help is of course always welcome! -
Someone was pointing out that we aren't ranting on this platform anymore, it's only shit posting and making fun of people.
I think it goes a little deeper than that. Maybe we have just given up? Maybe we have accepted that it's not getting any better than how it is already, it can only go downhill.
Just like in a relationship, you fight with your SO when you hope that there is room for improvement, but when you stop, you know the relationship's dead.
Maybe we have accepted the fact that, it is what it is. No use in ranting anymore.13 -
Hey DevRant fam!,
I hope everyone is well as always! I was just curious... Very recently i bumped into a website called 'LeetCode' and was curious about trying to solve some problems for fun. However to me it seems that i get stuck on the wording or it just gets confusing,. I personally always enjoyed building things but wasn't really a fan of doing the actual coding problems from websites like this not sure if that is a terrible thing?, was wondering has anyone else been in this position? Maybe i'm lacking something? :-)
Would love to hear anyone's input! thank you for taking the time to read through my post as always!
Cheers!.2 -
Anyone wanna start a project of some kind?
I'm a noob but I'm willing to help and learn along the way. I just wanna get as much experience as possible.
Doesn't have to be big but something cool and fun. I'd really like to make a game for Android and IOS10 -
I just started maintaining a few AUR packages, and I got to say it's rather fun and rewarding, just to know that your responsible for making sure that something is up to date, and that no one using the package is getting anything bad.2

I'd like to dive deep into web development.
I'm creating a little tool for myself on a web page, including server-side php, css, html, mysql and jquery, all just for fun and the experience.
I've got several ideas on how I want this tool to work and behave ...
But it's fucking difficult to wrap my head around all those technologies available. I don't know how to achieve certain things (yet) and what even to look out for😣
Fun fact: I already experimented with HTML, CSS, jQuery before as a noob. Yet today I've forgotten almost everything and need to start almost all over again, now even including PHP and MySQL, too.
This is gonna be fine. 😐 -
I have not been able to work for quite some time already due to a chronic condition getting worse. Even when I have been at work I wouldn't get anything done due to chronic pain (a literal pain in the ass), so this year hasn't been very fun so far. I cannot sit nor stand for extended periods of time. I just want to be able to work again! :C5

Life has been cluttered for a while. Currently backing up important files to reset my Windows laptop and also install deepin OS.
May be even install MacOS on it just for fun.
Hoping for a fresh start to 20172 -
Just finished a hackathon this past week trying to hone my skills in node. However, the amount of time I spent debugging stupid type errors was...quite miserable to say the least. Because of that, I’m looking for a new web library or framework XD. Anyone have some fun alternatives with languages that are preferably strongly typed?2

I knew I wanted to be a dev in 10th grade when my Chem teacher told me about the work environment & pay at Google. When I actually started learning to code, it was so much fun & the whole Google thing just seems like an added perk if I make it there.
(Apple wasn't quite the place for me) -
I'm getting a bit bored with web development as it's what I do 5 days a week so I'm thinking of learning something completely different just for fun. Is learning ios development a good idea? I not planning to ever do it seriously or as a career6

So I’m learning JavaScript but with every project I’m delayed because I have to make the page for the project and it irks me because I hate front end. DONT ASK WHY IM LEARNING FRONT END SHIT ALRIGHT? Anyhoo uh yeah no this shit is holding me back because I want to do web dev for web applications but developing the front end is such a fucking hassle. Like creating divs for the apps to look how I want while being basic as shit and I know JS is for front end and I get that and it’s fun to play with but I just wanna get to the programming you know? I’m not a designer I’m just trying to get better at programming and have fun. And also fuck those times I changed something and it literally should have changed but IT FUCKING DIDNT!2

I've been trying and testing all kinds of frameworks to get up to speed with modern development. Tinkered with VUE. That was fun. Tinkered with Laravel. Also fun.
Now I'm looking at Agular. Sweet mother of christ, they want me to learn all this shit just to do some Javascript?
I would rather stock shelves at a supermarket then learn yet another crappt framework that will be redundant in 5 years. I'll wait for the next one.7 -
I am bidding on freelancer for more than 2 months with the lowest charge with 1 day delivery but not getting any project. In fact nobody is getting selected for that project. At last what I see is No Freelancer Selected..

I am building a synth program for producing waveforms such as binaural. The programs I have used in the past have been mediocre.
In that project I am working on a realtime scope to visualize the waveforms. It is fun to learn how to streamline moving data between parts of the application. Right now it has a lot of unnecessary data copying going on, and resizing of vectors. So I am reading some books on high performance C++ to learn how to do this better. As part of this I am thinking about building a circular buffer so the vector is never resized and is always in contiguous memory.
Just plain fun!4 -
Aww... The End
Only took a few hours for them to catch but this game wasted basically an entire week so guess this is for the better.
Honestly turned out to be like any other mobile free to play... And I couldn't figure out what was so fun about it.. Probably just the small rewards that keep u coming back but eventually the lvls are pretty impossible... Only a whale can get there... Or sometime really dedicated to the game

A bit of an off-topic, but people need to shut up about copyright.
I see people making cool fun stuff all the time, and they start talking about a liscence to use it and copyrights and stuff. Wtf!? I get it if you're making a big commercial project, but no one's gonna steal your cookie clicker clone nor your minecraft mod.
I get it that people want their work to be protected, but ffs it reay annoys me when people bring up legal stuff when mentioning a project that was clearly just made for fun.8 -
Does anybody know any good software engineering companies to work for around LA? I'm looking for an entry level software engineering position. As soon as we got into the actual coding part of my first college programming class, I loved it. The next semester, I took two more programming classes and an introductory web development class, and about halfway through that semester, I knew this was what I wanted to do for a living. 2 1/2 years later, I've worked as web developer, both for a small company and a freelancer, I have a web development internship lined up for this fall that I'm excited about, I've written a few smaller programs in a couple languages just for fun, and I wouldn't want to do anything else at this point.

Not a job but some years ago I have set up a boot password, I don't even remember, on 2 school computers...
Just for fun...
They didn't catch me though :)1 -
Is it just me who feels the application they are currently working on is dumb, filled with issues, basically a pile of shit no matter how big/small easy/complex it actually is.
Just today for fun I opened up a clients webApp I worked on long ago, which I considered as shit but it I actually kinda got impressed by myself lol. -
I'm wanting to basically make a program or collection or scripts to automate all the boring parts of my life (cause I'm a lazy shit basically)
Any idea on what would be the best language to do this. I'm thinking python tbh. The end goal is going to be bills being payed ( I will out money manually into a PayPal account or something for this) and shopping being ordered to my house. Like I said I'm thinking python but wondering if there is anything better. I'm gonna end up having a computer or something set up just for theses scripts as will then extend into home automation or whatever I think looks fun. As the best way to learn is to try and making something fun2 -
I always love when I pick C again just for fun. I'm really used to "print" something if I'm not sure about that in basically everything.
You wanna print something in C? Well unless you know what and where it is (no point of print-checking then), it'll just happily crash without any reported error. Not to mention if I wanna find a bug, I don't have to get a debugger! Printf alone is basically a breakpoint! Ah stupid me :D -
Found a little magazine when I was 12 which talked about HTML.
Then later, a friend talked about VBS and VB.NET and I just started making prank shit in that...
Then later back to making websites and basically just grew from there really...
Only followed a formal education on programming once... Which I got kicked out off because I ended my first year with a splendid 2 (that 1 point for adequate attendance).
The fun part? I failed because I was too good :^)
All my grades where a 1 or a 2 because my code was made using tools and libraries that they didn't want me to touch or even know about until 3rd of 4th year...
So yea, I failed everything with the reason being: "Not according to the exercise".
Another fun part: We had to make a personal blog in the 1st year using the techniques we had learned.
Sites were published on a *public* server...
Someone hacked all sites... except mine :^) -

Has anyone here had a need to use Unmanaged Code, ie C++ interop for the sake of performance on a practical level? (ie, not just coz it's fun)
Im excluding driver or OS level code.
Only Server Side OR User side programs
Coz wouldnt the overhead of talking to unmanaged code overwrite any CPU-time benefits?2 -

I haven't written a line of code in over a month ever since I stopped working due to health issues...

Maybe I should just solve algo problems for fun?
Or should I finally try doing some (Java) open source...
Where to find projects?7 -
I got an idea for a fun api which can convert the style of input text, for example “hey I am a chatbot, please ask your query” if converted to the style of yoda from Star Wars will be “chatbot am I, queries you must ask”. There can be different styles like archaic English, sports commentary etc.
I’ve got the ai part ready, just need to write an api (I’m learning django for that). Has anyone got any experience with api marketplaces, I’m not sure what to use?1 -

Just be true to yourself and to them. Know your own terms when looking for a job, and know if their terms fit with you. Ask them a lot of questions. These questions should provide you a glimpse of what their company culture is like. Try to have fun during the entire process. Don't stress out. And believe in yourself!
****these tips are actually somewhat meant for me but we're all in this together in the process of job hunting -
If anyone is looking for a great tutorial on getting started with a docker cluster check out https://dockerswarm.rocks/
I had a 4 node cluster up on Digital Ocean with Traefik + Lets Encrypt, Prometheus, Portainer, Grafana all that good stuff in under 2 hours. Not much longer to test a basic WP and Next Cloud container with full SSL. Neat stuff. Just burning through $100 credit for testing but it's been fun5 -
Was solving algo problems for the last few hours again. It's for technical interview prep but what I realized was...
If I just see them as puzzles rather than a pointless barrier to me getting a better job... they actually become fun...
That and maybe I'm bored at work, need something intellectually challenging/requires thinking, and out of ideas for personal projects I want to build. -
I just wrote up the most fun and vitriolic rant about Windows 10 Calendars. I was about to add that after entering the info. correctly, when I saved it, it lost half the info.
The rant disappeared offa my screen. Don't tell me I'm losing my mind. The stress of the possibility of DJT winning the election took care of that. I just wonder if the orig. rant will show up now.
Thanks for keeping me from going batshit crazy for another year. I'm deeply indebted to you all. -
I got invited to a quinceanera by someone that happened to be on the same night as homecoming. They did all the traditional stuff. They had some sparkling cider that may or may not have been spiked and I had a lot of it. I learned after that it might have been spiked. It was right before homecoming started when the traditional stuff was over and it would've just been kinda boring dancing for the next FOUR HOURS. My date and I decided we didn't want to stay for that long so we went to homecoming instead. It has better dancing and a mosh pit which is way more fun than just slow dancing. We met up with a group of friends there and had a ton of fun. Homecoming only went till 10 where the quince would've gone till midnight. Our group went out for ice cream and I got home at 11. It's almost midnight now. High school is awesome, ain't it?

So, to keep a long story short, I am for the second time in my life the proud owner of a Macintosh Performa 6115CD in working order. The original Descent is just as fun as I remember it being—after taking a day to remember the best control configuration for keyboard.
I've got some ideas on how to get it online* so that I can transfer things to it.
Just for fun, however, I've been thinking it might be an interesting project to try and do some programming for it. I got my start on this setup, though not in Objective-C. Anyone happen to know of any free/abandonware coding setups for classic Mac? Running 7.5.3 at the moment.
