devRant just hit 50,000 downloads on Android (fancy new store badge, yay!). Thank you everyone for being part of this community and spreading the good word! @dfox and I have some fun new features in the works, exciting times!23

Interviewer: "Show me a cool side-project you have been working on!"
Me: "No! I do not have a cool side-project to show you! I work to pay the bills, and do other things in my spare time! Like go fishing, or play video games. Why the fuck are you assuming that I spend my weekends coding for fun!? Do you call random people asking them questions every Saturday and Sunday just for the LOLs of it?"36 -
Signed up for an Android course at my uni and expected to have some fun with Android Studio and modern app development technologies...
Turns out that we're working with Blockly (no coding). We will write our exam with Blockly. The course is mandatory and I cannot opt out.
I've been a dev since 7 years and I am dead inside already.13 -
Oh this week is gonna be fun.
I regularly ssh into my computers when I'm too lazy to login through the regular keyboard.
I usually have to move for about half a second in order to reach the keyboard but too lazy .______.4 -
*me and a bored coworker
me: bored as hell dude.
him: i have a fun game in mind.
me: shoot.
him: *brings his keyboard
him: type the string you can type the fastest. we will time it. i will start.
him: *types his name
him: your turn.
me: Scanner scanner = new Scanner(System.in);
him: the fuck is wrong with you?16 -
I'm never making fun of people who go to Stack Overflow for answers ever again.
I mean, have you guys seen this? A leap-second causing 100% CPU use in MySQL, and a dude figures it out like it was nothing, and provides a quick solution!

I think I get a programmer high.
Like when I program, I get really into it, time is flying, I'm having fun problem solving, I am super focused, my brain is thinking super fast, and I have a hard time stopping.
Maybe similar to a runners high?9 -
Updated my PC this morning, now it thinks I have 7 monitors (I have 3 and only 1 is working now). This is going to be a fun morning...9
-
TL;DR they blocked github
I work remotely, that means every once in a while I take my laptop and travel somewhere, work and have fun. This week I am visiting Turkey, they just blocked github 2 days ago... Freaking github... who does that?! and why?!7 -
Let's see if I have any new e-mails at outlook.office365.com

I applied to Amazon recently not really thinking about it I was just bored. Dropped my CV and I was asked to fill in why would I want to work in that position. I un-ironically put “It sounds like a lot of fun”, got rejected instantly then got an unrelated message from an Amazon recruiter from another division inviting me to apply, rejected it because it didn’t sound as fun.
I’m an honest bloke I just want to have fun.11 -
So I had another seizure last night... (yea not fun), it's been awhile and yesterday's, I have no recollection of what happened.
But today, what do I do? Make sure I can still read and code :)
Honestly, if I forget how to code, not sure what I would do.....
Oh and I just wrote this and somewhat related:

After accidently broken my database, I have a Little Fun with Cortana.
I asked her if she Likes Linux.
She answered:
Linux, Unix, Tux.. I Like words ending on x. It reminds me of the Xbox.
:D2 -
Easily this guy.
Fun fact: I was following him on Quora and YouTube for what must have been a year until I realised it was the same person.3 -
I do not like it when a client can't come up with content for the design they approved... however , I do have a great deal of fun writing temporary content...7

Drop brother off at a new years party, where he will be until sunrise partying with friends.
Me: Have fun!
Me: *drives back home, grabs laptop and opens up IntelliJ*
Me: Let the finger dance begin!
Have I mentioned I hate parties?4 -
Years ago, when i was a teenager (13,14 or smth) and internet at home was a very uncommon thing, there was that places where ppl can play lan games, have a beer (or coke) and have fun (spacenet internet cafe). It was like 1€ per hour to get a pc. Os was win98, if you just cancel the boot progress (reset button) to get an error boot menu, and then into the dos mode "edit c:/windows/win.ini" and remove theyr client startup setting from there, than u could use the pc for free. How much hours we spend there...
The more fun thing where the open network config, without the client running i could access all computers c drives (they was just shared i think so admin have it easy) was fun to locate the counter strike 1.6 control settings of other players. And bind the w key to "kill"... Round begins and you hear alot ppl raging. I could even acess the server settings of unreal tournament and fck up the gravity and such things. Good old time, the only game i played fair was broodwar and d3 lod5 -
While I have no idea what to do with it, I discovered that the domain deathtoclients.com was available for purchase.
I'm sure I can come up with something fun to entertain my free time.3 -
Im at the end of my studies and doing great, but when my clinical depression episodes kick in I forget how to take a piss correctly let alone write some code. I think I'l have a fun time when I get a job.14

I need a break.
A break from stress of endless expectations
From school
From work
From being made fun of
From criticism
From criticizing myself
From not being able to do fun things
From vague instructions
From a lack of sleep
from inconsistency.
From unclear objectives
From financial/medical/emotional stress
From life
From hatred
From destruction of my emotional stability
From a lack of confidence
From unfulfilled decisions
From trying to hide under a mask
From jealousy
From lists
From repetitive obliteration of any hope I have
From me crap talking myself
From pleasing people
Oh well, at least after tomorrow, I’m on full-time break...12 -
While my classmates are roaming around with their girlfriend , I m also having fun with mine . Have a look at mine girlfriend28

It's 20-fucking-21 and I'm still asked to provide paper copies of my thesis. 😐
It's snowing outside and I don't have a usb to copy my shit and bring it to the "copy and bind" guy, so this is gonna be fun. (said no one, ever)
Oh, also, offices are closed so handover is going to be even more fun. 😐16 -
✨ I created a cli tool that brings my GitHub feed right to my terminal.
It's just a fun idea that I had since I have this habit of checking my github feed every now and then. So made this tool to do it right from my working terminal.
The project is open-sourced in Github

Old story.
Colleague: "I'm gonna update some tables and stored procedures later"
*phone rings two hours later*
Colleague: "Hi! Just wanted to tell you I accidently dropped all our production databases. Have fun recovering them 😊"
Well shit.8 -
Frankly if your a dev that doesn't push yourself. I wont take you seriously.
Experience levels range greatly! You have to be mindful of that to.
I push myself with every project looking for better ways to do things
Doesn't mean you can't have fun whilst you do it 😉4 -
Ok. Yesterday I finished building my compiler I have to say: it was a pretty darn big thing with 7000 Lines of code.
I did it alone and with almost no help.
I wanted to give some advice in case someone wants to program a compiler. I knaw its useless in times of lex and yacc, but anyway.
-have a good idea for the language
-learn about parser/lexer
-learn assembler
-do it like me: output the assembler to a file and let it assemble/link by the linux standart-tools (call the commands)
-Have fun. Fun is essential in coding
I hope I was able to help people who want to build a compiler alone... Yau can always ask questions ;~)

Was trying to fix my old MacBook Pro (From about 2011, it's served me well, and I ain't letting it die!)
Tried to do an internet recovery, and learned that Mac's do indeed have a BSOD... this is going to be fun to fix.7 -
Fun fact you dumbass: YOU 👏🏻 DON'T👏🏻HAVE👏🏻TO👏🏻 REVIEW👏🏻THE 👏🏻PLACE
I get asked to review places I've never been all the fucking time. But like an adult with a BRAIN I swipe away.

!Rant
Everyone says that programmers, engineers, etc are boring and don't know how to have fun, they don't go out, etc.
Well, I just lost my glasses last night cuz I was drunk as shit lol.9 -

"How can you spend the whole day in front of the computer? It's saturday!"
Yeah, and it's my weekend, I spend it how I want to, I have fun doing this...1 -
All my friends have girlfriends right now, spending good times and having fun over the weekend.
And here I am trying to figure out how to integrate Jquery UI with React :(11 -
Here's a silly side project I've been working on just for fun:
https://soundofco.de/
It "programmatically" creates sound from code (or plain text) on GitHub. I wouldn't call it music, because it sounds kind of horrible almost all of the time :D It's very simple: The length of a line defines the note to be played. Really just a nerdy bit of fun.
Unfortunately I have absolutely zero knowledge in music theory and I have no idea how to make the resulting sounds more pleasant or even melodic. If you're interested in making this better or helping out with feedback, you can find the project at https://github.com/dneustadt/...
Also feel free to share if you find anything on GitHub that makes for some decent sounds :D (I doubt it)12 -
I have changed
I cannot study anymore
I don't like doing it
There's no fun in it
I cannot run after marks like everyone do
I cannot mindlessly memorise things without understanding
Anyways bye7 -
Do coding outside of work. I got into the industry because I enjoy writing code, but your job won't always be fun. That's why they give you money. Make sure that spark of joy doesn't die.
Or, when it does die, at least you'll have something to rant about.3 -
Debugging async multithreaded apps is so much fun that I have a pile of hair on my desk that's been pulled out in frustration.
Considering making a wig to wear after I'm done. -
So I'm 17, I go to a vocational school and I'm in a computer IT and networking class as a junior. We have learned programming in HTML and CSS and whenever I'm programming I'm having the most fun, so I am teaching myself C++! I don't really feel welcome due to my age but I hope all of you can help me in the future!15
-
- Ran `brew install maven`
- Left my terminal to have some fun because of the slow network (fuck my ISP btw)
- Came back after ~15 mins to look at the terminal cause' installation should've finished.
- Checked terminal.
- Realised I ran `brew isntall maven` instead.

Most fun I had as a dev?
I'd say it was when the whole it department decided to have an Easter egg competition xD the DBA's never did find out why one of our apps kept creating dummy users called LEEEEEROY JENKINS
One of my best achievements in development xD -
I pranked my friends ex, nothing bad, just fun. First i screen shorted is desktop, flipped it and made it his new desktop. Then flipped the resolution, so my upsideiwn bf was cool. Lastly I change his mouse behavior, I set it for reversed.
Fun right? A typical person might get a lil pussy and have to fix it. Some might even fix it themselves. Regardless have a lil chuckle.
He smashes the monitor and keyboard, left them, both in a pile.3 -
While I was working with my Android project that is written on Kotlin. One of my on non-tech colleague came and saw my screen and
said "Why are you overriding fun"
I replied him that we just not override fun we also have private fun and public fun.
Is it not funny translating code to real English 😂😂😂2 -
I am talking about my class'mates'
How about moving the chairs under the tables when you leave the classroom.
It's just a sign of decency which none of you seem to have.
Oh and hitting someone isn't fun either, or playing football with their book.12 -
In my opinion during the past 18 hours devRant has gone from a great resource - to a must have indispensable developer community. It shows the power of Internet communication.
So many new developers arriving are making it so much more fun and valuable. I enjoyed devRant before but now it is amazing.
I am having a tough time keeping up - which is great.4 -
I've realized I'm so busy working with technology, I don't have time left to keep learning it and playing with it. What are some fun ways you all keep learning new things and staying engaged?17
-
I contributed to my first open source project on GitHub. It is so much better and fun to do. Why have I not been doing this since 🤔😊😁

*looks for some reviews of a dentist*
Yelp: ah yes we have that.
*Enters Yelp site*
"Oh noes, you have JavaScript disabled! You should enable it because it can make websites really cool (why does this seem like a front-end wank), gives you compliments when you had a bad day (fuck you Yelp), can save the world from tragedy on its own (does savetheworld.js exist yet?). But that you'll never realize anymore. Because YOU disabled JavaScript, filthy piece of shit you are. So enable JavaScript so that we can have so much more fun!"
Ah, not providing any content that I visited your shitty site for, guilt-tripping me into enabling JavaScript for your dribble, and on top of that saying that we'll have fun when I whitelist you. Fun ey.. you know what'd be fun Yelp? For me to go there and shove my dick into every one of your front-end and marketing cunts' faces until they turn blue. Now THAT would be a lot of fun!!!2 -
No, brain. I don't need to know Python.
Shut up, you already know Ruby, PHP, and a fuckton of front-end tech, you don't need to --
Do you remember the 3 projects that we aren't working on anymore because we have the PS4 and Assassin's Creed?
I already have a job, moron! It sounds fun, but we...
What am I doing on codecademy?2 -
Wasn't given a chance to test out of a scripting(bash, python, perl) class for my Bachelor's program. To "rebel" I finished all the assignments during this first week of the semester and have a perfect 100% in every one.
At least the assignments were fun.
Take that <school name redacted>!1 -

Just saw a thread about Global Reddit Meetup Day. Do we have one in devrant? If not, is it possible to have one? I know the user base is not comparable with reddit, but it would be fun meeting other local developers who rant too 😛6 -
Just finished signing my first ever professional contract. Shortly after I was given a conpany sheet where I had to give part of my personal info and answer some fun questions, one of which was what super power would you want to have?
My answer was obviously: The ability to always find the missing ';' 😂😂😂6 -
I (senior dev) just went out with colleagues from work. We started drinking what eventually led to some dancing and partying. After a lot of drinks one of the junior/intermediate devs told me that he was surprised i am not a conservative bourgeois like he supposed i am based on his work-experience with me and that he can have actually have fun with me.
MAN I AM FUCKING SORRY THAT I AM PROFESSIONELL AND THAT I DISTINGUISH BETWEEN MY PRIVATE AND MY PROFESSIONAL LIVE!3 -
Have fun coding again.
It’s just a job at the moment. I wanna have the satisfaction again.
And find a girl..8 -
Confession: I'm launching a major project for a client this time next week. It's some of the worst code I've ever written in my entire life. It's beyond awful, but I have no choice. It's sure going to be fun fixing it for the next 2 weeks post launch.8
-
So the team I work on has this giant blue alien doll, the "build break" doll. You break the production build, you get the doll until someone else breaks it. I was wondering if some of the other devs have some fun things they do with their team. ^-^8
-
As a guy who really just started his web development life I just say the most fun I have is clicking the refresh button ( or npm does it for me ) and seeing my magic work, unless it doesn't and then I press again , maybe this time it will ..2
-
On Monday i have a Skype Interview.
Now i've bought a green screen because i thought that would be fun for showing my design stuff live as a virtual webcam. But this stupid Java 6 SE "Chroma Key Live" programm does not recognise any camera... and it's so ugIy... I hate java gui's.... :-/5 -
The more i use git.. more the fun it is.. Just found out the usage of rebase and cherry-pick.. I have read about the implications of these commands in a shared repo.. But it is fun to use it in a solo repo..3

Germans get made fun of for being focused on work and not wanting to have fun (at work).
But it's exactly what I like about them. I would join and work at a German company in a split second.
Fuck all the small talks and fun Fridays, let's just get the work done, get paid and go home and have fun at home.22 -
Hi from Guatemala! I am new to devRant, now it's a must read every day, so much fun! I just landed my first job and I am very nervous/happy. My part of the job is to make the frontend using Flutter, I have some experience on Android but I feel it's very different. Lets see how it goes!11
-
I know you all do love the dark side. Let me help out with the web version for ya' too :)

Last time I was here I was in college. 🤓
Hello world, again 🫂
I graduated and now I have a job as a developer for two years now.
So much ranting has been happening and I'm excited to tell you all about it.
PS: I already had my first canonical event (Prod deployment at 5 pm ... Was not fun ... Wasn't me if you're asking)1 -
A few days ago I had a party with a big part of my good ol' highschool classmates who I almost never spoke to. Let the stories begin:
- Guy who made fun me in when I said I wanted to do computer science: "Man, I wish I had done the same study. It looks fun."
- Guy who has a startup for like 1 year: "Sooo what are you good at, ios/android development? webdevelopment? contact me if you want to work with us.(for free)"
- One of the friendly guys: "Do you have any sites where I can learn some basic programming or something?"
What I thought: WTF HAPPEND IN THOSE 3 YEARS, WHY THE SUDDEN INTEREST IN PROGRAMMING AND STUFF?! ESPECIALLY YOU FIRST GUY!3 -
Finish all my on-going side projects that have been left to gather dust due to lack of time and resources...
They may not be any good however they are fun to work on when I can. -
Me: "Today I'm going to study real hard for that logic exam I have next week. I am already late."
Brain: "Remember tekkit classic, that game you used to play? It would be totally fun to play that again."
Progress after two days of gaming, two days of studying: page 94 of 400 😭😭😭1 -
Ok, Why tha Fuck does everyone bitch about javascript, like seriously why?
Its a damn great language and i have fun working with it. sure some people prefer other languages but it seems people who haven't even tried JS properly talk shit about it.20 -
Alcoholic Programmer
Last year, I had an inevitable programming session while I was drunk. I didn't struggle at all. I programmed like composing a poem. Btw I have been programming for last 18 years and never enjoyed this much after college programming labs.
Since then I've been drinking before complicated logics and never disappointed.
Tl;dr. Programming is fun, but programming is unparalleled when drunk.4 -
competitive salary
so competitive we refuse to compete by actually stating it
by this point I might just have some fun and not apply to jobs persay but just write funny blurbs to them about their ads
I think I'm finding I just don't wanna work with all these technologies13 -
I've never been hacked - not that I know of :D - and never "hacked" someone else.
(Sure, I did some things in high school to circumvent certain restrictions but nothing worth mentioning whatsoever.)
But all these rants that I read so far have me wondering if I shouldn't simply setup a honeypot sometime when I'm about to be really bored just to have some fun. Then again, I don't have time to be bored. :/1 -
!Rant
I'm going to be teaching my roommate how to "code" soon. Or rather, I'll be teaching her how to use Scratch, so she can have a leg up when she applies to work at a children's code academy that uses a Scratch-like environment. Should be fun!
I love that Scratch exists. Such an accessible way to teach basic concepts like loops, conditional statements, etc, with results that are way more fun than "oh look I output the fibinacci sequence"1 -
hey, i have been there for some time now, love you all and this wonderful community.
You guys gave me so much fun during my long coding night, between two hot chocolate ;)
Finally got my devduck, obviously my productivity will increase by 150% now !
I'm planning to offer the second to my best friend for Christmas, any idea of a fun way to do it ? :)3 -
What I learned from devrant:
There is someone, somewhere, that will upvote the stupidest shit.
Which I find both terrifying and humorous. This is not a criticism nor a putdown. I find people fascinating. I also realize that my definition of "stupidest shit" is very subjective. This is definitely the most "fun" forum I have been on in a long time.4 -
My friend has a smart watch, and he is always watching the time. Texting. I meant to say texting. He's always texting at work. I have a traditional watch, so I like to make fun of him by very loudly saying "Hey Siri" into my watch a few times and acting confused when it doesn't work.2
-
When i was in my first cs class and thought I had been in the computer lab for an <i>hour</i> and realized it had been 6 hours. (if I have to work 40+ hours a week, it should be something so fun that I get lost in it and it that feels like 7 hours a week).
-
Few days ago i niticed one of my (site) accounts was deleted for inactivity. I thought fuck it, ion use that site, lets have fun. I wrote an email to get it restored:
"Sorry i got ass cancer and it took dr lil pump 2 years to cure me and couldnt use the site from the hospital"
Today, i got an email that i got my account back.4 -
People have been making fun of me for not having WhatsApp. They say that I am 'behind in technology', 'old fashioned' and that I don't know anything about computers and modern technology because I don't use WhatsApp.
They even kinda make fun of my family. One other family who made fun of us owns both Google Home and Amazon Echo.
What the heck is even going on anymore?
Anyway I am gonna put lights on a fez and wear it to school on monday.
*sips tea*4 -
Me: oh boy i have so much fun stuff planned for this weekend, better get my work done before it
My immune system: here have this flu with some pink eye on top2 -
I spend the whole day decoding Assembly code for special formulas that we require for a current project.
And the client doesn't have them anywhere else.
There's only that old desktop application - written in assembly.
My Pc and I never felt so close before...
If it sounds like it was fun, it wasn't.
NOT. AT. ALL.1 -
1) I don't have to talk to other people while doing it.
2) The computer does exactly what I want it to do and failure will always be an error made by me, not someone else. That makes it satisfying.
3) I'm pretty good at it. It's just fun helping other people at school and creating small programs to solve problems. -
Any fun self-hosted app or useful services you guys use on your own server?
For some weeks I have started to host my own git repository with gogs and take continious development into my control with jenkins and feel pretty neat.
Now I understand why my grandmother loves to raise her own food even when she could buy everything in the supermarket.11 -
Three of us work on an app. I made a mockup interface to develop the functionality, a second person made the designed interfaces and a third made the API. Now the design got included in the app.
I had a conversation with the third person.
He: Do you need a list of what works and what doesn't?
Me: If you have free time...
*2 seconds later*
He: Nothing except login. Have fun!1 -
Since it's 42 & I am fond of the number..
The 'most fun' I had was making a completely useless feature for our customers that we (our team) knew will be useless (&wrong) once finished and we will have to rewrite it. But we had to do it nevertheless till the end of the week, since the customer is the king. It turned out hilarious and fun because everyone was making jokes on the floor about what idiotic stuff we code and implement. Even the boss was like: yes, yes, I know but please do it, you can rewrite it later to not do anything, just leave the button on gui. It was crazy it was fun, a little bit of mindless coding to lighten up the atmosphere and it (coding & jokes) brought closer the whole colective reaponsible for that particular customer. -
I have an idea to make server side html. Just for fun. Or for noobs who just wants to know web development.
Example syntax:
<html listen=80>
... something amazing
</html>
Any suggestions/ideas??
(This could also be the much needed revolution for backend)12 -
Started to redesign my wifes website into grid-layout with SASS. It is fun and I save a lot of markup HTML.
I try to keep the green theme, but I realy suck at design... I just have no eye for colors. I rather would keep everything white and grey...3 -
Baby I don't need dollar bills to have fun tonight ~
I love cheap clients ~
Baby I don't need dollar bills to have fun tonight ~

Ahahaha.
I'm creating a "bring with you" Linux install. So I got a 512 GB USB key. (You know, to even have some persistance).
Linux flashing tool : are you sure ?
Fun :)14 -
"Mh, I should just write a short comment instead of writing a novel"
// This is a fucking detailed explaination of this shit, even though you can clearly see what it does because I usually write clean code. Also, it's a one-line comment, so have fun side-scrolling -
I'm glad I have a job where we don't have team 'building' nonsense. We just come in and we team-build on the spot, as in, we get along.
Oh, the nightmare of my previous job where they resented employees for not joining some stupid party where they all got drunk and had forced 'fun'. I like authentic environments.5 -
There was this random image on devRant.
Yepp, it is Brainfuck once again.
For the bored devs among us and for the ones who seek a challenge to learn and have fun... here it is. Solve it on paper like I did in the first comment.19 -
This week has not been fun. I worked 12-14h everyday, slept 4h, felt like a zombie. It's 3pm and I still have 8 tasks to go.4
-
Do you know feeling when you have just so much fun refactoring + ( listening + singing / humming ) to music that you can't even properly type anymore because you move around too much?
I feel so happy rn, maybe it's also the coffee ..3 -
Fun fact, I left my old job in October last year. I still have a full access to their github. With admin privileges. I could just delete all their repositories. This is too much power.7
-
Working as a freelancer I have to hand in a monthly timesheet. I was told to print it out three times and sign them. A photocopied signature would not be acceptable.
After one year I found out that the manager signs one of the sheets, throws the other two away and makes two copies of the signed one.
I asked him why I have to give him three sheets then.
He answered: I don't know either.
Now the fun fact: the next copier is a 2min walk from his office -
This weekend I'm going to attempt to write an application that I'm missing right now. (It might exist already but hey, I'm in for a programming challenge)
I'll probably have a stable backend within the hour, the frontend is going to be 'fun', though 😅
And yes, I'll be using a frontend framework because otherwise I could just as well quit right fucking now.
Its been a while, this is going to be fun!17 -
Wow... I haven't done complex/algorithmic level coding for maybe 6 months (yes that's how mindless my day job usually is)...
Now I just finished part of the code for a scheduling app I'm doing just for fun... Though there is also a use case at work but I don't have the free time to think about problems at this level... -
I really don't get the frustration people have with debugging...
It's one of the most fun parts of programming for me.
I don't mean the missing semicolon (I use an ide cause I care about my time).
When all your seniors have spent hours on trying to find a bug and after a few days you're able to present a fix to them, that honestly is the best feeling, potentially better than "finishing" a product (let's be honest, it's never finished)1 -
Have you ever flown a plane? No? Well I need you to get in the lab today and test out these high level requirements, you should pick up on it pretty fast....
The lab looks like NASA flight control and has everything a cockpit has, sure I can just jump right on it and do my thing.
This should be fun 😅2 -
Code = play games
Watch a tutorial = watch a movie
Read docs = read a novel
So I end up being scolded for never studying for my academics and just having fun all the time -
Work is fun when every time I finish editing a project I have to wait 30 mins for it (solution) to compile :D2
-
So I picked up learning perl.
Mostly using it for tooling and admin.
Kinda looks insane, but in a fun way.
Have I made a terrible mistake?7 -
Somebody programmed a programming game using a programming game. Why I can't have time enough to make fun stuff like this? https://youtu.be/yMnOEgbm2fE

Today my therapist suggested I work towards one day getting back the will and energy to start coding side projects, just for the fun of it.
That was a long, long time since I had the ability to do. Maybe I can get back to feeling that much in control that I can let work go for a day or two each week and just... Have fun coding. What a mind-boggling thought.2 -
So I have a date tomorrow. First meeting in person. I’ve got a little time to kill before hand, and need to learn Dart anyway....so I thought it would be fun to code her up something interactive. Kinda like that game Mr and Mrs. Only in the terminal, and for nerds.
Features, ladies and gentleman?9 -
Hey folks, I just saw this list of 90 currently free Udemy video courses that normally cost up to 200€ per course.. just wanted to share them with you, as there are many developer and business courses :-)
https://mydealz.de/deals/...
Have fun fellow devs!4 -
Why so much hypocrite Devs here ?
Examples :
I don’t use VScode because it sends telemetry.
Same for Windows 10
Same for half other products.
Like YOU don’t collect telemetry in apps YOU build. And if you don’t, have fun debugging without any data beside “It doesn’t work” comments !8 -
I've been using visual studio for years and always found debugging pretty fun. At my new job I have to use xcode and FUCK DEBUGGING IN THAT ILLEIGBLE SHIT TIER DEBUGGER. and fuck objective-c, at least you can ignore the objective part and just code c..
I never thought I would say this, but damn, I miss Microsoft.9 -
Just started to make some UI designs in sketch to try it out at least once. I have to admit, it makes a lot of fun ^^5
-
Are there more people here who prefer codual over visual?
UML diagrams are fun and all, but I personally prefer to have a code example over an uml diagram when it comes to a few classes that work together. Not exactly sure why I prefer it that way, in my head I translate uml to code in order to understand it better and if you show me a piece of code I don't have to do that translation.
I wonder what you guys' thoughts are 🤔5 -
I tried and I'm giving up. I have spent nearly two years of my life trying to teach kids to code but it feels like standing in quicksand I don't get to learn new stuff I feel myself turning into the kind of teachers ppl make fun of here. I used to pride myself in being the fun teacher that kids look up to. Guess I'll quit while I'm ahead1
-
So I am a marvel fan and have an Espruino Pico, after scavenging left over parts from a home renovation project I realised I had all the bits to built a replica iron man arc reactor chest piece.
I figured it'd be a fun little electronics project, so I have thick copper wire that needs shaping.
I have my pliers, gloves and a gas stove. My lodgers walk into the kitchen...
Them: "What the hell are you doing?!"
Me: "We don't have a forge." -
not really a rant but the more i code, the more fun it gets. i havent really dived this deep into coding and allowing myself to take most of my time doing it has made it more interesting for me. now i want to learn more and start creating personal projects aside from real university projects. people may think its weird that i have been devoting a lot of my time writing code, but i guess they just dont understand the difference of coding for grades and coding for fun.
we are all in it for fun!1 -
Watching a film with friends. I could be coding right now.
Are Blockbuster supposed to be entertaining? My programms less predictable than the story line. I have assignments to do, yet I must adore this.
School is litterally more fun than watching that shit.5 -
I can't work
I can't sleep
I can't eat
I can't code
I can't go have fun
I can't have a conversation
Because I've got a new exciting idea "💡" buzzing all over my mind all the time.
It's been 9 days already and it's still exciting, probably even more. I think that means it might be worth going ahead and realising it.6 -
DevRant-API-Docs Site Update:
The overall is now done!
I still have to do the actual docs content but the playground, the Q&A and the links page are pretty done now and only require some little changes.
Here's the link:
https://devrant-docs.github.io/
Have fun!8 -
I have more side projects than I'll ever be able to finish. When I do finish them (or at least get a mvp), I have no idea how to market them, and in many ways, I don't even want to. I'm worried that it will kill the fun of it for me.3
-
😔this weekend should be fun, I... I need to... well you see... I need to create a woocommerce site despite my better judgments and opinions on the subject.
God, if you are listening.. well reading, please have mercy on my soul.rant suicide is forecasted. wordpress the things we do fuck my life woocommerce why did i agree to this5 -
[reminder] At the end of the month I will participate with the GGJ for the first time. Who of you has participated in the past and/or will participate this month?
Ive been planning this for 5 years now but every year I forgot... That's why I placed this reminder. Have fun everyone who will participate.2 -
so I installed nginx on my server this week. I feel like a giddy kid now installing one self hosted app after another. REVERSE PROXY ALL THE THINGS!
Right now I have reviewboard and drone (drone.io) installed. Any of you guys have suggestions for other cool stuff to try out? Mostly interested in something with a web API that can do fun stuff :)3 -
1. I can be both lazy, and productive
2. I will always have something new to learn, always.
3. It is fun.3 -
So the gf just came home, threw this in my face (literally, but not intentionally) and said "they were giving these away, thought you might have fun".
I've only heard of raspberry pi, arduino and such, but never actually used one.
Anyone have any experience with this thing in particular? Can I actually do anything with it or is it mostly for learning?7 -
Look at dat boi. He's the most poisonous animal known to humankind and he looks like THIS. He don't have to prove anything, you just touch him and you ded.
That's why I only reply to you boubas when I feel like having fun.9 -
I've realized that I was acting like an annoying asshole in the past on devRant and I apologize for that behavior.
Some people deserved it and some didn't. Some companies deserved it and some didn't.
I guess the time for a change has come. I will be more careful from now on.
On a side note: I have a different username now.
It was a very depressing experience with you, -ANGRY-CLIENT-. Have fun on the other side. :)8 -
Just saying hello. I'm a Google Store chronic downloader and found this. I'm so happy to see so much conversation around coding. I've been learning by myself for 2 months and since then I've been desperate to have someone to talk about programming and stuff. I hope I can learn more and have fun here :)5
-
Dear @devRant, when a rant contains a link and I click it, it doesn't open in a new tab so when that happens, I have to click back on the browser which is not fun.
Can you please open the links in a blank tab.
Thank you :-*9 -
I've been working for two days (after work) on my blog idea...
Man I forgot how fun it is to work on your own projects, and the stuff I learn at the moment... It is insane!
I am currently a very happy developer, hopefully I can keep this up.
I still have to look into automated unit testing and code formatting checks with github though, cant wait! -
!rant Bought a fertility hormone test and so I have to wake up early tomorrow to lancet two (or more!) fingers and bleed on some index cards (not literally index cards, probably) before mailing them to a lab. Fun times, fun times. 😅5
-
Well I probably should have been more prepared for this, but i was able to backup, upload and transfer my websites from my own server to my backup host provider while my ISP has been down for the past couple hours. Fun stuff.
-
PhD saga update.
Been keeping up with other candidates, and seems some have gotten their acceptance offers. I haven't. I'm losing hope. Sad. Very sad. 😞
Tachycardia is not fun, and I did not sign up for it. But apparently this ^ saddens me more than it should.6 -
"I look for three things in a project: 1) Compelling work; 2) fun client; 3) astronomical fees. However, to have a successful project, I really only need two out of three. For example, I’ll do great work with fun people for nothing and still feel rewarded. Or, I’ll do great work for a mean, stupid client for outrageous money. Or, I’ll do boring work with somebody I like a lot for more money than one can imagine. Anytime I’m faced with only one of the three it’s time to rethink the relationship. Actually, it’s time to move on." - Lowell Williams

Made my first contribution to the Python package index. Contributing to open source has always been fun. DevRants, please check my module that I have contributed. Here is the link to PyPi - https://pypi.org/project/... and GitHub - https://github.com/browserium/...
Please post your feedback and comments so that I can improve my module and have a workaround across all the issues.1 -
The most annoying thing about being an IT professional...
Microsoft never calls me to tell me there is a problem with my computer. WTF!
I use Linux, but still, I totally miss all the fun I would have with that wanker...1 -
UPDATE ON THE SCHOOL NETWORKING SITUATION:
the entire country has entered total self-isolation for 3 weeks, which means no physical school for 3 weeks. I have to suffer at home for 3 weeks.
Fun.
(save me, please. I am beyond help.)7 -
I wrote some simple pen test scripts that automatically get executed on every ip in my fail2ban log.
Ip count: 2500+ in a few days. Probably victims of botnet. Some have mysql, postgres, smb open and many of them support user/pass auth on their ssh.
The scripts were a lot of fun to write but I don't expect much results.5 -
Fighting dev environment stuff makes me sometimes wish I could be evil and have some sort of framework that when an API call fails it just makes a second call to the PokeAPI and returns some random results ... because if shit is gonna be absurd it may as well be fun absurd.
-
Seriously though.
Why use Arch. It sounds like headaches.
What is the benefit. Like, I used to have fun with
tweaking systems and so forth, until it became
not so fun when I had to actually do it to make
money, like server admin on my websites.
From the sounds of it, setting it up takes hours, none of the packages are quite ready, it takes google research and troubleshooting for common tasks, etc.
Why not say, Ubuntu, kde? Or whatever.13 -
Just switched from Debian to Ubuntu, should have coded for a project today... But I passed hours playing freeciv... At least I had fun!!
-
So I'm a "Web Application Developer" but I have to go out on site whilst a trained engineer sits in the office doing nothing. Everything I can do on site I can do from my office with teamviewer. Hit the M25 at 09:00 and will hit it again at 17:00 ... not a fun day2
-
I was having fun with GPIO recently. Now I have an RGB LED flashing in my room when my alarm clock starts ringing.
Android App sending HTTP Request when Alarm has been triggered, php starts a bash script (was too lazy to do it in php). Bash script does its job for 10 seconds. -
sooo, new job. turns out they have an external dvd drive that I was forced to use! crazy spinning fun! Haven't seen those for a couple of years!1
-
ok so basically i have 2 emails x and y.
one is an appleId other is a personal email.
but turns out some other person p is using an appleId with my personal email from a year.
here is a fun fact, i created that email id this month.
apple engineers have taken a week and asked for a week more to figure out how an unverified email is used to create appleId6 -
idk how people have time/passion to work on side-projects after work.
or is it just me, who always wants to build something, but ultimately feels stuck, tired and hopeless.
how do I get back to that state when developing stuff was fun?5 -
Watching videos of people that accomplish something, doing something similar to me. When I see that others can do it and have fun whilst doing it, I get motivated.1
-
I'm making the communication in my company. So I have to make facebook posts to link our product.
That could be fun if only I could use memes, jokes and pop culture references. Unfortunately, our targets are seniors. So, always same format, always same sentences, always same images. I'm bored.2 -
what should i do, any ideas?
i'm a student and have a very good payed job (19h/week). Im stressed and have an ill feeling at work, not beacsuse of others but because i really Dont like the job and dont know if im good at it.
this feeling and the job is affecting my studies. I could take a job, at my university, which is muss less payed but really fun.
Do you have any advise guys?7 -
Google bloody captcha.
It works fine, until you have more than one form on a page then the complexity increases by 100000%.
Finally my colleague gets it working then I read an article that says bots use Google own speech recognition service to defeat it. Fun times.3 -
For the first time in a very long time, I am out of a software engineering job. I have no idea why I am handling this so well. I literally have no idea if I will get another job or not but for this month, I am working on myself and learning more on FP which is really fun btw. Is this maturity?9
-
I need help.
I love software and hardware development but over a period of 4 years now i have lost motivation. I hardly finish anything i have started and if i finish, it's never rewarding.
I also feel like i live a very boring life. Staring at the screen all day and doing very little.
What do you guys do for fun? What activities or books do you read to keep yourselves busy or entertained?
I have been having this desire for someone to love but something makes me think that it's just a reaction to a soul that has lost purpose and only feels like loving someone will be a source of happiness. Luckily, nobody has been available for the mess i have been.
I really admire busy people. People who are passionately working on something they have chosen to do and still have fun.
I think talking to someone about how bad i feel about myself will help a little but what i really need is help on how to restore the motivation i had 4 years ago.
Can someone give me a fun project i can work on? Not for making money but something i will do, learn and feel happy about it.
I will also appreciate if someone can recommend a good book that will help me learn. Get me motivated and also hide me from this reality.
Thank you.1 -
Just saw 10000 under my icon and thought of it as a bug in website. With hopes I went on to customize avatar.
2 single digits have never made fun of me that bad. -
Basically I work my ass off until I have made some real progress. Knowing that I can make something useful in a tough situation gives confidence to enjoy life and try fun things during the good days.
-
HOD keeps coaching me in regards to my new role as a manager for my institution. I really like it, the man has a lot of knowledge and would show me stuff that not only deals with my job, but his as well. Thus far everything has been working rather smoothly, mind you, i have been acting manager for more than 6 months thus far, but they just made it official after our vp conaidered that most of the applicants for the manager role were not as qualified as I was, kinda had the advantage since I wrote the job requirements.
All in all it has been fun, stressing, but fun. -
Nothing quite like some late-night Elixir. Honestly the most fun language I have ever used (yes, more fun than Ruby)4
-
Because of my managers attitude I have lost interest in her project ...not fun any more. Now it’s not gonna be of such good quality because now I won’t be developing it with lovvve, won’t be going extra miles ......fucking idiot.1
-
Please god let me pass my bachelor thesis so this is over and I have some rest and time for more fun stuff...3

Sales: Hey @chenb0x, we told the Client that you were a phone phreak and could make any communication device work.
Me: Well, I don't think that's such a good idea becau-
Sales: Oh, you can do it! Here's the equivalent of a black box and a pocket knife. Have fun!

Why the fuck does windows use 100MB for the efi partition? Like oh hey I will exactly allocate enough space for me. Oh you want ArchLinux and NixOs too? Well fuck you have fun dangouresly moving around partition just to increase the fucking size of the efi partition I just allocated at install-time without ever asking you about it.6
-
You have a cake and a knife. You need 8 slice, but the knife is rubbish and will disintegrate after 2 cuts.
Its a really fun company I worked for.
No spoilers guys...14 -
I kind of miss abbie boi doxxing randos, avoiding all responsibility, arguing against all reason and just generally making no sense… that was fun.
Now we only have Kaine’s avatar making absolutely no sense at all. So boring…5 -
It's always fun... When it's not for work...
I guess the best one was when I figured out how to make extensions and used it to create an app that can monitor websites for updates (like new anime) so I don't have to keep refreshing 😆😚 -
Am I the only one that cringes when I see software developer consistently ranked as one of the best jobs to have? Are other jobs that horrible that this is as good as it gets? I’m probably too cynical I suppose.
I feel like I was seduced by the fun of programming only to have the corporate enterprise suck my soul dry.9 -
Good one 😅,
Indeed #Debugging isn't always that much fun, but I have learned a lot by debugging the code and still learning so many things. It helps us become better.
Agree?1 -
I have a weird love/hate relationship with JavaScript.
I'm not at all a webDev, but I like to use it occasionally because it's fun and I really like its syntax... but it's an absolute pile of shit.
If you put racing stripes and a spoiler on a golf cart, it's still a fucking golf cart.2 -
Fun times with postscript:
I have two EPS files that are generated by a program.
In there there is the postscript describing the file (~6000 lines) and then the preview image as TIFF. Each ps and TIFF image on its own renders correctly and looks good.
Now the fun part: The ps in combination with one of the images works, with the other image it doesn't. Somehow the ps-renderer tries to interpret the TIFF-data, which yields nonsense and the renderer stops altogether. But only for one file not for the other. And it's definitely not the ps, because if I switch the preview images the other file doesn't work.1 -
Just got accepted as a Tutor. I have to teach PhD students in medical field SciKit package for image processing. Been coding in Python using pandas and numpy for years, but I know jack shit on SciKit.
I applied just for fun and got the position. Now I am fucking terrified.
Meanwhile I rejected a Teaching Assistant position because of this one.6 -
One of the projects that I have to do this semester is a React-Native, I was very eager to start coding until a friend of mine got an error never seen before, when he googled the problem, literally in StackOverflow somebody posted the same issue just about 2h ago, still with no response. This is going to be a fun ending semester project.
PS: this project is going to have a Lisp code project connected somehow4 -
The one place I get to have fun with my code is the tests. Who the fuck cares if I use the test string "Mr. Snuffleupagus"? Please stop ruinning the little fun I do have by changing my tests in the very next commit.1
-
Friday: I have done a lot of work this week... Should take rest in the weekend
Saturday: Who needs rest? Let's learn new hobbies, watch movies, play games and have fun🤩
Sunday: I think I will take some rest today...But that series is so cool...
Monday Morning: Why did not I take sufficient rest the whole weekend 🥱🤦🏽♂️
Monday Afternoon: Slept for two hours in the office time😑2 -
The most fun I have while programming is when I work on something that I enjoy. Even if it won't be a huge project in the end, working on an interesting idea is always the most fun I can have.
I am sure most people can relate, too. -
Helping to fix legacy code on a staging server. No version control (at least not that I am aware of). Besides rare code comments, no way to see the author, time, or even purpose of customizations that have been made. No fun!1
-
I have a colleague who keeps hitting ctrl+S when he's not writing any code. I hit it like twice or thrice myself, but he just keeps at it. Drives me crazy in a fun way. I tried asking him about it, but he just shrugs like it's nothing.10
-
I don't know. I'm having my first real hackathon this weekend so that'll be fun! And we also have a mini hackathon at work on Monday 😅 this'll be fun!2
-
I have so many things I could be doing, either fun or not fun, I wish I could spawn children (processes) to do them all and just return the memorable moments and results to my brain...2
-
Ideal job
I do creative projects whatever I want with no deadlines or pressure, everyone loves whatever I make except me because I know I can do better than that last crap I made, getting paid plenty of money to pay off all my family and friends debt and have plenty left over. Specifically making fun programs useful software or web apps and have plenty of free time for taking retreats and going out into nature away from computers and technology.1 -
Man, I enjoy the work I do and my boss is a great guy, but being rushed is never fun. And it's hard to say "it'll be done soon" if there's still some major features missing and the implementation is still unclear.
Can't a junior just take his time to make some decent code that won't end as spaghetti? I have enough PTSD of the first project I did here, which I still have to bugfix at least once a month 😂 -
$ ng generate component gofuckyourself
I am having a fun time learning Angular. It’s way different from React.
I do like the css scoping a lot. Also it’s strange to not have to deal with state.
I am learning it because I see the job market requiring it as opposed to React.
Any React peeps feel me?3 -
What are the best conventions I should try to get my boss to send the team to? He said we have a budget for a few events, but other than the fun ones (WWDC, Google.IO, etc) I have no idea which ones have actual, meaningful content.
Any suggestions? -
Debugging is a must have skill for every developer. I used to consider debugging to be a pain. But when I did it for fun it made debugging a bit easier to me.
Take debugging as a challenge and enjoy doing it, it will make your life a lot easier1 -
This aint a rant but can you guys recommend me a game to pass time?
Id like to have a
Strategy game
Realistic, but not europa universalis realistic
Fun to play
Around 30min/match or ability to save
Windows is ok
Not neccessarily multiplayer, i travel quite often3 -
Applying for an entry level software job and having the "let's do a hackathon" project. It's super fun cos I know the effort I put in doesn't actually matter since you'll just choose someone more experienced. But I still have to go ahead and put in max effort or you'll have a reason to call me lazy :(
-
I got the core functionality of my Android app working!
But more importantly the dev felt... Fun. The new GUI designer and navigation view/controller is pretty nice.
But also the fact that I'm coding for myself instead of thinking about how to make it sellable...
That and it's easier than getting it to work via ReactNative...
Guess learning React will have to wait... Until it's needed at work.
On another note... My 1 week vacation has come to an end... But lack of motivation and energy prevented me from doing everything I was supposed to do including the other fun stuff...1 -
Installing phpBB 3.0.5 (from 2009) because of reasons.
This thing has no rest API, if I want to automate it I have to implement my own .. fun :)1 -
!rant
In the past 2 days I worked a lot, now I slept 12 hours straight. I don't have any tickets left, and the manager told me to have fun. I haven't felt such freedom in a while.
(The project will be late by a year in February, so until now I always had at least 2 urgent tickets related to topics that I've never heard of before.)1 -
Guys, I need an advise regarding summer jobs:
I have had this awesome summer job for 2 summers as a mountainbiking guide, which is fun, has awesome perks, and pays relatively well.
But it doesn't really net me any useful experience, so should I seek a job as a programmer instead?
I'm studying first year bachelor's, but I have experience, so I should get a job nevertheless.6 -
Around 1milion lines. Every class is a rabithole with endless depth of implements. Confusingly named classes without comments. 0 documentation. I do not see the chance of ever understanding what is actually going on. Have fun :D1
-
A new way appeared in my life.
Everything related to cars, metal and motor engines.
I may or may not have to dissapoint some people with it, but I am not going to be a dev I guess.
It was all fun and chill. Do not worry. I am not going to leave this awesome place haha, just felt like mentioning it. :)8 -
!rant
I want to create a website and the frontend stuff is already done by another guy. It is similar to social media in that it needs an upvote-system and accept uploads. There also needs to be a payment system. I have very little experience in web development, but I have a lot of fun learning new things.
My question: Would you recomend a CMS(which one) or
learning by doing?7 -
So over the past few weeks I have been smacking my head against the table tying to solve my work problem and failing to... Today I spend a few hours at work not working and playing with code making something fun and easy. After this I go back to the headache and if my magic get something working.
-
Whats your weirdest bug/issue in your code? Which you couldnt figure out why, but it was something simple and you was Like ”oh how could i miss that...” etc.
I need to have some fun in my life right now haha.7 -
Maybe is just me but I'm starting to move from the idea that work needs to be fun at all.
If it is, awesome! If it's not it's OK because work is just about 20% of my life in which I don't have a lot of control but enables me to have control over the other 80% (hobbies, relationships, community, fun)3 -
I am currently in the hunt for a job post college. However with the 300+ jobs I have applied to, I think I have also got that many phone calls from spammers. However, some of them are getting good. They use a CallerID (that isn't even the name or company they are) most of the calls are from stupid insurance companies. So I have started to play with them by pretending to be different food companies (PizzaHut, Papa Johns, ect.). I think this is more fun. What have your experiences been lately?2
-
Fellow ranters,
I have been devoting few hours to the book called cracking the coding interview.
It's a fun book. Questions are nice.
But does it help even a tiny bit in interviews?3 -
Soo since for the end of the year, I'll be stuck with my family, I won't be able to work on my main projet, and only have my crappy laptop (hey at least it runs Linux). So I've decided to discover python and build some tools with :D.
Since I see a lot of python fans around, I wonder if I could have some pointers, specialy for desktop cross plateforme app, good editors/ide, interesting libraries, etc...
As information, I almost never touched python before. But for the little I did, it was fun =]4 -
My parents know that I work with "codes" in computers to make all sort of things 😁. My siblings have some idea of what programming and software engineering is. They tell me that it is fun (they have tried it), but they still don't value it that much 😕
-
I fell in love with the “Limonade“ PHP-Framework recently. It's a really cute, little and easy framework. I have so much fun creating Web-Apps and Websites with it!
You guys, should check it out!2 -
So I've been on vacation for a week now, still two days to go until I get back to work.
It's been super fun, but I am getting pretty stressed about the shit-ton of work I have to do when I come back.
How do you let go?2 -
I'm thinking of writing a personal website for fun and as a portfolio for my IT projects and hobbies, eg photography.
Currently I'm working with C# and have some Java and Python knowledge, besides meddling here and there with other languages. I've recently started looking into architectures and other stuff.
Do you have any recommendations for into which language and technology I could look into for this project?2 -
What's a fun way to relax after spending the day fighting with JavaScript and CSS? Probably not doing Karazhan! I just want to unwind, forget about moving shit over a pixel, have a glass of wine, and play my alt.1
-
My favorite method to learn something new is just to buy a book or download a paper about it or something lock myself up in my desk and not go home until I accomplished something. Those have been some fun nights so far!
-
I only have good ones; my rule is never ever to publish anything while drunk so it's either a breakthrough or in the worst case a fun evening (at least compared to the alternative of sober coding)
-
CGI is fun, websockets are fun, why on earth is it so fucking hard to have both of them with proper switching using at most one extra program apart from my handlers?
By proper switching I mean that you actually track connections and upgrade headers to decide what to do, rather than forcing websocket connections onto a separate HTTP resource just to tell the difference.4 -
Mod_wsgi for apache is like scratching your freshly cut nails on a chalkboard while eating oysters covered in ketchup.
Why does WAMP have to be a pain for everything? I'm going to just use some premade thing for this because getting stuck on setup is not my idea of fun when I have python APIs to debug.4 -
Howdy yall,
I'm interested in developing a productivity app for windows, but I have no idea where to get started. Do you have any suggestions for frameworks/tutorials to get started with? I'd prefer to use C# instead of C++, but if necessary I'll do either.
Thanks for the suggestions
P.S. It'll also be the first project I actually use version control for. Fun stuff6 -
Maybe I'm a complete beginner and don't know what I don't know, but having seen Terraform, I recognize immediately the value of simplifying deployment through configuration or 'infrastructure as code'.
I don't know a fucking thing about it, or how to actually do it, and don't even have a need for it because I don't program at that scale, but it looks really fun to work with.5 -
i got a dev!rant nostress ball, because i didn't have any serious rants and used the app for fun purposes.
edit: do you think maybe it can also help in debugging, although it's nothing close to being a duck. -
good things i have a "sad" face. Project Leader or producer thinks i work really hard. They keep telling me "you look so tired today man. Have some fun"
-
I frequently run out of programming ideas. Could anyone tell me a fun project they have done.
I know Python 3, ruby and some C++3 -
Actually a follow up to something I could have posted last week.
My master's project for school was going so awfully I started having epilepsy seizures, it was almost two years ago and it seems to have cleared out,i'm still medicated and having regular appointment with a neurologist.
So yeah, fun times. -
Was going to have some fun refactoring js code on the weekend, gf dragged me to a jazz festival instead </3
I enjoyed it, though -
Anyone wanna start a project of some kind?
I'm a noob but I'm willing to help and learn along the way. I just wanna get as much experience as possible.
Doesn't have to be big but something cool and fun. I'd really like to make a game for Android and IOS10 -
Whoever decided that Discord should beep AND NOT TELL YOU WHY it's beeping for is a fucking genius, I have tens of Discord servers and it's always FUN to check my DMs and spend ten minutes to find the one server I haven't muted yet.
-
Well i got my motivation back.
So i decided to make a game in unity.
It is going to be simple FTL like game. It is going to be much simpler than that mamoth of a game in 3D that i planned. I want to learn and have some fun designing the game from scrach. Yup and creating all of the assets.
If I manage to create a decent game im planning to sell it for like 5$. It might boost my funds a bit if i manage to finish it.
I have few great ideas how to develop that game. Mechanics, community support and others. Of course first i have to make a boilerplate. I cant start on those ideas if i dont have anything to work with! I hope it will be fun! Wish me luck! (And i wish everybody else luck too!)2 -
Just got my hands on a fresh installation of windows XP... With IE6. I guess it's time to have fun with the caniuse stats :)1

I’m sixteen. You’re fifteen. Your home is a brothel, my home is hell. There is no war in sight yet. I don’t have bipolar. I don’t have scars.
Let’s have some fun!5 -
I have an idea for a fun little web game... A small little learning project.
So of course the first thing I do is write a CLI database change management tool. -
gRPC is very messy and unstable, dependencies doesn't compile (workaround is possible), gRPC don't supports libressl (there exist some PR to add libressl support, so I applied them), finally gRPC doesn't compile.
Have fun using gRPC in C or C++1 -
All these maths and research and autonomous driving shit are OK, but in my next life I want to be Soilwork's drummer and have some big fun.
You owe me, Universe -
So I was writing some C code, pretty simple code. I had to pass a matrix to a function. The matrix had been globally defined as arr[100][100]. But the actual size of the matrix was stored in 2 vars m, n. Now when defining the function if I do like this:
void fun(int a[][n])
The code doesn't work as expected but when defined as:
void fun(int a[][100])
Works perfectly.
I have no idea why this is happening, any insight will be very helpful.5 -
I handed in my notice last week, now I have to be held prisoner for 6 weeks in a company that hits all my Asperger triggers, and causes me daily panic attacks. But then... I get a big pay jump, remote working, more holiday.. and a much more fun project1

Where have you learned "the useful" programming ?
I mean, programming math challenges and this stuff is really fun and makes you think about things differently.
But it's not useful(It very much is, I just mean that the output programs aren't). Where did you learn useful programming ? Like creating GUI apps and stuff like that.3 -
Managers fucking fun activity. They're taking it away from meeting room. Shouting down the hall. I pinged my HR.
Me: How can one code with this noice
HR: I understand. You even have a typo with 'noise'
Shit fuck, here goes my weekend. I have to revisit what have I coded today 😠2 -
Well that was fun. I'm deleting duplicate files from a mysql table and S3. Accidentally removed the one I wanted to keep from S3 and don't have a reference to the old one because I give my S3 files super unique names to prevent duplication and naming hacks. Ugh.
-
1. Makes account on CodeWars to see what the fuss is about, have a bit of fun on a quiet weekend etc.
2. Does a few 7kyu challenges, feels neat.
3. 4hrs later is 10 commits into a 1kyu level challenge called PuzzleFighter.
WHY DO I DO THIS -
I used to love coding. I have ASD and it was one of those rare things I could just do for hours without realising the time. I used to do my own projects, or at least plan them.
Now it's my job to code (& design when I don't have a pleb project, software engineer). I still kinda like to code but as I *have to* code, I just hate it.
Every fun thing that turns to work just turns to torture. Maybe I'll break my arm slipping this winter and have to have an extended sick leave...3 -
So i got this service i made for fun and learning. Theres many providers in it for money, not me, only a little (lets not lie to ourselves).
Id just like to have a handful of happy clients to make it pay for itself so i dont lose money.
I have no idea how to advertise or gain clients. Those potential clients i cling with are from US and the server is in EU, and i wont convince anyone to buy something i wouldnt buy myself.
I suck at marketing.2 -
Using canary versions of android studio is fun but I hate it when you have to download entire package again and again because of some new fixes :/
-
!rant It's the holidays, however, I still have fun doing work during my vacation. Especially at my leisure.
-
i have been watching some jetpack compose tutorials and trying to create projects with it. Its quite cool and looks very interesting. but wrti8 those modifiers seems like a great wastage of time :/
Also, i have an OCD of writing code in lesser number of lines , as much as possible . so i would rather prefer writing
val x = Modifier.function1().fun2().fun()
than
val x = Modifier
.function1()
.fun2()
.fun()
as long as my code line does not cross the 80 character limit guideline, and as long as it makes sense to not switch to a new line.
but IDE seems adamant on breaking those long modifier lines to weird indented codeblock, so its already getting very noring for me :/2 -
I just ordered a bunch of stickers and a mug, all while a portion of the proceeds go to support open source.
I shamelessly give you my personal kickback link:
http://unixstickers.refr.cc/76TMR8V
They have loads of variety. I'm an Arch Linux guy, so I bought a bunch of that. Even if you don't buy anything, it's fun to look. -
I have not been able to work for quite some time already due to a chronic condition getting worse. Even when I have been at work I wouldn't get anything done due to chronic pain (a literal pain in the ass), so this year hasn't been very fun so far. I cannot sit nor stand for extended periods of time. I just want to be able to work again! :C5
-
I am thinking of taking some random photos and create stop motion videos of desk toys I have at home. Guess it would be pretty fun thing to do during lockdown😄
-
One other thing I hate about the popularity of async comm in corps.
After reading so much async comm. I have no energy to read for fun on the weekend o.o2 -
5 am seems like the perfect time to compare deep generative models and deep reinforcement, just because you can't fall asleeprant thenocturnallife i shouldn't have had that energy drink though research papers are actually fun
-
I am building a synth program for producing waveforms such as binaural. The programs I have used in the past have been mediocre.
In that project I am working on a realtime scope to visualize the waveforms. It is fun to learn how to streamline moving data between parts of the application. Right now it has a lot of unnecessary data copying going on, and resizing of vectors. So I am reading some books on high performance C++ to learn how to do this better. As part of this I am thinking about building a circular buffer so the vector is never resized and is always in contiguous memory.
Just plain fun!4 -
Today was fun, i set up a dedicated minecraft server on my old laptop, to increase fps when I play on my shitty phone now it runs real smooth. The server is running on a proxmox vm - ubuntu server.
I wish I knew that fps would be this high , i would have done this wayy earlier, am loving it8 -
So I’m learning JavaScript but with every project I’m delayed because I have to make the page for the project and it irks me because I hate front end. DONT ASK WHY IM LEARNING FRONT END SHIT ALRIGHT? Anyhoo uh yeah no this shit is holding me back because I want to do web dev for web applications but developing the front end is such a fucking hassle. Like creating divs for the apps to look how I want while being basic as shit and I know JS is for front end and I get that and it’s fun to play with but I just wanna get to the programming you know? I’m not a designer I’m just trying to get better at programming and have fun. And also fuck those times I changed something and it literally should have changed but IT FUCKING DIDNT!2

Work prank i want to pull of....
We kind of did all of it🤗😂
Wanted to put a bull horn under my co workers table. We did actually do it and made a video of it.
Have never stopped crying from laughs🤗
If you can’t have fun then why bother!?!?1 -
Hey, anybody have any ideas what sentence/workd should i put as a Title and the subtitle beside the logo ? i make that title and subtitle choosen randomly after each interval
this is a fun project competing with my co-worker.
and the theme is a twitter clone, but for job seeking.13 -
story time
today I learned how to license a git hub project have I finally made it to intermediate developer?

Its a fun hackington where i have been before a few times, run only by volunteers.
I tink some people on devrant here also would be interested in this event.
i am also going and hope te see more devranters there! ID't by there laptop stickers!1 -
The Search Engine Guide for Developers.
The Top Ten:
StartPage: for technical information and unbiased spell checking phrases.
DuckDuckgo: for watching music videos at work.
All the rest: including "Bing Bong".12 -
The best part of being a dev is that I can write useless piece of code like a profanity retweeter bot or a script for auto replying Facebook birthday wishes and have a ton of fun making them

Most of the web stuff I have done in the past have been PHP, Wordpress, cgi, etc. I read about nginx and was very impressed by what it accomplished in the last 20 years. Now I have a desire to play with this tech for fun.
What I want to do:
- create, manage, and launch minecraft servers
- provide a web interface for managing servers (I would like to learn how to make the server use the infrastructure of nginx to be managed like its other services)
- make this packaged so others can use this (probably on github)
I don't know anything about nginx other than it is really really cool, can serve massive amounts of web pages, and can do a whole lot more than that.
Question:
Is nginx suitable for this? Is this a big learning curve? Will I have fun doing this?
I am currently running a multi-instance minecraft server being managed by a piece of software called Crafty Controller. It is really neat. However, I am finding it buggy. I also see that the next version of this software will be behind a patreon. This is really disappointing. So this is spurring me to consider building something fun for myself, and if useful, for others.
I will most likely do very barebones and inflexible web interface that just gets the job done. I know enough to get by. So I assume I have a large learning curve ahead to do this.
Any advice? Is this going to turn into a large time sink?2 -
Hello node.js
i hope to have some fun with each other
But if you want to fight with me, I'm ready to defeat you -
I think I have a slight problem in my API.
Snapshot 1 : API entrey point
Snapshot 2 : on "return" statement from API.
No biggies, 8 GB of RAM used.
The API ? Adds 1 ligne in database.
That's gonna be a fun debug8 -
There is fun in using Google Colab.
They unveiled free TPUs on Colab.
It took me an hour of really slow training to realise that even if TPU is enabled, you have to code it explicitly to enable it.
After an hour I realised I was using only the CPU 😂😂

Help!
I really wanna increase my c++ skills, but I'm a learning-by-doing person. I start new projects all the time but they're too lame to finish them..
Do you have any ideas for some medium-size projects, which could actually be useful for personal use?
Useless projects are also okay, but then they have to be fun to implement..1 -
Working on a xslt just to change a single character in an invoice. The system I use does not have the euros sign...
Because fuck manually editing the pdf every month.
Fun.2 -
I‘m currently working fulltime in IT, i would say as a business analyst/ requirement engineer. I do this job for 2 years now and its no fun for me because its only interfaces we work on.I am also studying software engineering in the evenings.
At the UAS programming is really fun for me and seeing progress instead of only interfaces really makes me happy..but i am scared to not have skills for starting as a developer fulltime and get called dump or something like this. Do you guys have any advice for me? Is it ok to start as a junior directly after UAS? -
I have JUST realized the word “ease-in-out” is not a palindrome! The function itself is, and I was SURE the word was a palindrome too. I just _knew_ it. Fuck.
Fun fact: “()()” is also not a palindrome.3 -
Not a job but some years ago I have set up a boot password, I don't even remember, on 2 school computers...
Just for fun...
They didn't catch me though :)1 -
One person I work with thinks they know what they're doing but they have no idea, and we all know it and make fun of him behind his back.
-
I’m not good at frontend and I’ve accepted that but it’s frustrating because I just am not good at making things look good and I hate spending the time on the looks when I want to just go have fun with the back end.
I will say though getting it to look the way I want is super satisfying as well.
Any advice or resources?2 -
Have your ever tried to reply the spam message just for fun? I tried this with my legit email address now again they won. Fwak them.2

Managed by pure chance to see (and screencap) my "score" of first 666, 777 and now 888. Was almost as fun as when my car was at 22 222. I wonder if we don't have to make computers more aware of how many weird little quirks we have for personal AI assistants to actually work well.1
-
depends,
the me who started learning at first felt proud that i gained skills all alone by watching tutorials, reading docs and making projects for fun. He would have said boot camps are for lazy and unmotivated people
the present me would say, i wish i could be spoon-fed everything i need in a bootcamp rather than spending hours on learning new tech -
Alright sure this quarintine time would go with no issues... Right?
*Opens google.com*
*Waits 30 seconds*
*Page loads without the logo*
*Searches about a problem I have*
*Wait another 60 seconds*
*Page loads with no results*
*Waits another 40 seconds*
*Now there are links*
*Clicks on the first link*
*ERR_TIMEOUT*
Yep.... Fun shit.3 -
sigh other than being completely goddamn exhausted the other aspect of working on anything brainy is sometimes you have to have fun. i haven't been having any. so... dawn of war time :)
-
I haven't written a line of code in over a month ever since I stopped working due to health issues...
And I have no desire or ideas to create any new apps...
Sorta feels like I'm throwing away 20+ years of work/experience/passion.
Maybe I should just solve algo problems for fun?
Or should I finally try doing some (Java) open source...
Where to find projects?7 -
I kinder have two phones now and I bought one only for fun and testing apps &dev rant , I made a simple java app where I can control one phone only because I don't wanna mess anything on the other , trying to find a way to hide a simcard inside ,so when I lost it I can always find it, or just run a custom ROM ,but too scared to mess it up haha4

I have realized that I need to redefine the meaning of the word "work" in my brain to mean "anything that needs to be done regardless of whether it's fun/interesting/engaging or not".
I should have realized and done that a long time ago.1 -
I think the first time I ever felt like a wizard because of dev work was when I discovered creative coding and all the fun you can have with it.

I have been tasked with planning a feature retirement.
Basically the plan is to move this feature to another plan where it makes more sense and is more stable.
Now we don't have any data on how many or which customers are using this. And I need to plan a migration for them.
Fun times ahead... -
I have a new idea for my discord bot. I want to make a very simple kind of conversation engine: basic replies to the user based on what they said. Sounds like a fun project.1
