I'm looking at setting up a server as vpn server (that part I know) which tunnels everything through multiple other vpn connections.

So let's say I've got a vps which I connect to through vpn. I then want that vps to have one or multiple connections to other vpn servers.

That way i can connect my devices to this server which routes everything to/through other services like mullvad :).

Tried it before but ended up losing ssh access until reboot 😬

My go to question for dev interviews is how do you find all prime numbers from 2 to x because there's so much room for optimisation.

Start with the basics, loop over every number and check if it's divisible by any number less than it, then record the prime numbers and check only those, then move to something like the sieve of eratosthenes then reduce the problem space and only iterate through 2 to sqrt(x)

How do you deal with all this waste sorting/recycling business?

I live in what's considered a small apartment for 4 people and a cat and in our tiny kitchen we have separate trash bags for:
- plastic/paper/metal
- glass
- deposit bottles
- commons/unsorted

- and it's very likely that starting '24 we'll also have an orange 'food waste' bag

I swear to God, sometimes I feel like the Wall-e, the trash prince, living in a recycling centre/dumpster. This kind of taints the pleasure of WFH.

How do you deal with that? Question to those who sort waste and, preferably, live in a small aptmt.

So far my career out of uni has been like this:

8 months in first place working as C# .NET dev, creating native desktop apps for windows. job was shitty, was not getting any best practices skills so I left.

12 months in 2nd place working as android dev in a startup. was working all alone and had to rebuilt my app up to 5-6 times to learn best practices. startup didnt care about android app at all so I left and now doing just some small freelance work for them.

3 months in new startup as android dev.Today I was told that its decided to focus on iOS and do all marketing (also uplift of new design) only on iOS. basically for next 3-4 months they don't plan to do much on android side. they saw that I showed some interest in backend and now they are asking me to talk with two other senior guys about starting with some small tasks for me on backend.

Our backend is mainly using python. Also backend guys will be pretty busy for next few months because they will have to deliver many new features in next few upcoming months. I've talked with one of them and he said that this is a bad idea to force frontend to start working on backend. However I feel that he's sort of gateekeping and probably just doesn't want to help me with getting up to speed.

In my defense, my knowledge doesn't end with C# .NET desktop apps and native mobile apps for android.

I have hobbie projects (gameservers) where I worked on websites (php,html,css,javascript,mysql) and also was taking care of a java based gameserver which is hosted in a linux vps.

Also I've had a small hosting "company" where with available tools I've managed to automate VPS(virtual private server) ordering, web hosting ordering and domain ordering. Basically I owned a dedicated server and did everything using whmcs, cpanel and proxmox virtualization.

I trust myself in learning this backend stuff and doing whats required, however I learned everything by myself and I won't follow all of these best practices.

Should I accept more responsibility on backend or should I continue focusing on android?

It's a genuine question. Do we really need AI in all those areas? And is AI better than a static ruleset?

I'm not much into AI/ML (I'm a paranoic sceptic) but the way I understand it, the quality of AI operation correctness relies solely on the data it's
datamodel has been trained on. And if it's a rolling datamodel, i.e. if it's training (getting feedback) while it's LIVE, its correctness depends on how good the feedback is.

The way I see it, AI/ML are very good and useful in processing enormous amounts of data to establish its own "understanding" of the matter. But if the data is incorrect or the feedback is incorrect, the AI will learn it wrong and make false assumptions/claims.

So here I am, asking you, the wiser people, AI-savvy lads, to enlighten me with your wisdom and explain to me, is AI/ML really that much needed in all those areas, or is it simpler, cheaper and perhaps more reliable to do it the old-fashioned way, i.e. preprogramming a set of static rules (perhaps with dynamic thresholds) to process the data with?

Is it just me or is the first question of the gcse computer science exam the hardest question in the world?

So I was talking microservices architecture with some lead techs.
And I started asking how did they combine/connect their microservices.

And despite having a lot, they use HTTP as the main transporter.
So the put some API-Gateway, all inside traffic has to go through it, to connect to the final client.

And I said that I do meshing microservices, and we use Nats as man transporter, so our messages go through UDP and not TCP.

And they freaked out. Saying UDP is too low level and not useful...

My question: if you do microservices oriented architecture, and not SOA, do you use HTTP? Did you use it simply because "it works"?

Have a question about raises.

Working in europe as a junior dev (had 2.5 year experience prior) but lowballed myself (because I had a 1.5 year gap from development) and started working here for 2.5k euro/month salary.

After my 3 months probation I noticed that Im doing better than 60% of my team and as soon as my probation ended I messaged my manager and asked for a raise to bump me up to 3.5k/month.

I am waiting for a raise for the past 7 weeks already. My manager keeps telling me that decision is greenlighted because I got very strong and positive feedback. However CTO is on vacation, once he comes back manager will be on vacation and so on. Basically a corporate clusterfuck.

So basically I will have my raise request approved what? 8 weeks after my original request? Also add a couple more weeks because I guess new contract will be signed from the beginning of next month, not retrospectively. So when I will actually get that increased salary? What the hell.

Since my original request havent even reached CTO yet Im thinking of amending my original request and asking for a bump up to 4k or quit the company and go contracting for the same 4k and pay 17 percent for taxes instead being employed fulltime while paying around 43% for taxes.

I am just pissed off that its taking 2 months to just get the 'okay' and I guess will take 3 more weeks to sign the new contract. It shouldnt be like that, I lost money while waiting so I think it would be fair enough to ask for a bigger bump.

I have sort of an embarrassing question...

I never learned touch typing, hated it as much as I hated my calligraphy lessons in elementary. Forward a couple of years, I'm a developer and trying to dig deeper into vim seems to require learning touch typing... it has been a struggle to say the least and lowered my speed to a frustrating rate. 😥

I know the arguments for putting the work and learning proper technique but, are there any other arguments out there? I mean, as a developer I find myself using a lot of numbers and symbols which are not totally covered in touch typing curricula, together with a bunch of key combinations...

Hi guys. Have a question about working in USA as a foreigner (EU national). Next year I plan on coming to work in the US under H1B visa in a big company where I will have opportunity to apply for EB3 green card after 6 months of working there. Lets say I get the green card in 2-3 years and Im finally free from my first work in US. How hard it would be for me to find another job in there? I mean I will have few years of experience under my belt so thats fine. But what about education which was acquired not in USA? Like I dont have a GED or a bachelors degree from US. Is it true that without US education most of employers wont even consider to invite me for an interview?

I have a load balancer and want it to pass the IP of the original caller to the server. Usually it is done by modifying the header? of the Request HTTP packet? and adding X-Forwarded-For: ....

The LB team though says it needs to modify X-Originating-IP and somehow causes a noticeable impact of the speed of all requests.

I don't know the details but it should only modify the first Packet that has the HTTP headers and should be appending X-Forwarded-For. If only need to modify the Header packet, how can it slow down the whole interaction so much:

-Adds 100ms to a 200ms request
-Increases a 10 minute download to like 20-30 minutes

Question about git: What do you do when you have a massive pull request? This guy I work with made a PR with 13k files out of which 11-12k is basically HTML's that should have been added as an initial commit, and remaining ones are actual files that we worked on. Honest question: Is Jira really that bad?
Iam using Jira. It is not blazing fast nor is the UI amazing but I wouldn't rate it so badly.

That said, when the UI gets cluttered it's mostly company-internal stuff that fills up space (not only Jiras fault). I also don't use confluence.

Hi all my webdev friends! Question for you, tried google, got propaganda.

Why do front end devs use frameworks like angular or react? I was looking into it, and it looks like html/JavaScript can handle it all. Wouldn't removing them save load time and data overhead? Does it really boost productivity that much?

As a backend dev, it is completely possible I missed something haha.

When you have no developer friends and you need a question answered, but you don't know how to write the question on SO!

Am I the only one to think companies asking questions such as those for technical interviews don’t understand what software engineering/development is about ?

- How many layers does a webservice have?
- What framework do you use for unit testing ?
- How do you do dependency injection ?

Essentially questions that they deem black and white but really aren’t. Besides isn’t the core of the work to just adapt and learn while being smart about what things you implement ? I don’t get these questions for me it’s a sign that a company doesn’t understand the work I’ll be doing.

I think for a technical interview I’d much rather spend my time on a difficult algo question in the language of my choice for 30mins - 1h than 20mins answering close minded questions that don’t have to be.

This rant is mostly due to the fact I’ve done a few interviews with two companies and both behaved like that, I’m 100% certain I had the skills to do the jobs they were offering me (they both contacted me first) but both ended up denying me because my knowledge on their specific questions wasn’t detailed enough. I could have learnt their stack in about a week so I don’t know why that mentality exists.

I might be wrong about the core of the work though… what do you think?

How often do you use livetemplates?

I am a new android dev with ADHD and just discovered live templates. They make my life much easier, for example I have shortcuts for generating recyclerview adapter/viewholder/implementation boilerplate code.

In that way I am able to focus on implementation, and do my coding like building blocks, rather than memorizing every detail of implementation. Also I don't need to go to stackoverflow and copypaste basic things multiple times. Even for example during live coding interview having livetemplates seems awesome, copypasting from stackoverflow would be shameful (I think). Using my own custom shortcuts for livetemplates seems the best way for how my brain functions (I suck at memorizing tiny details, but I remember general idea/flow of a pattern and I would prefer memorizing what to use and when to use, instead of all small details of implementation).

Is getting to dependent on livetemplates a good practice to get used to? Do other developers frown upon a dev who has dozens of livetemplates and relies on them instead of writing all code from memory by hand?

What's is a regular or recommend workflow when developing a game that has a good/elaborated background story.

Let's say you are developing a game like Metal Gear or Resident Evil.

Where does the writing of the story get in? At the beginning? Your write the whole story or at list the majority of it before putting the game together?

And what's the writing style for a videogame story? You write it like a book? Or is more specific for a game?

I mean, your character Jason meets a boss and fights it: do you write: "Jasons finds evil genius hideout and meets him" or instead "the player gets to the boss and the fight starts"?

Freelancers, how many hours would you charge your client per small projects?

Situation is that I am leaving country but will still work as a freelancer android dev in my company at hourly rate 27EUR/hour.

Now from experience I already feel that most specifications of tasks/ux-ui sketches will be not clear/vague. Also there is a question of overall app architecture, prevention from crashes, memory leaks and etc.

Basically they will give me some spec and I will have to evaluate how long it will take to do it. I never worked as a freelancer so I need some advice on how to deal with problems like this. If I guess that something might take 5 working days to be done (40h) should I charge for 60h and etc.?

I recently joined DevRants, and with me joining any new site or media where you can share I am usually the guy who is shy and likes to sit back and watch/read. However I wanted to post a question as I am trying to get a job within the Cyber Security field. I have a computer science degree and honestly I feel like I can't even code at a level I should be able to. I am also currently working/studying for my CompTIA Security+. It has been going good but, I always second guess myself and doubt my abilities. I guess this a a slight rant and question so far.

My question is how can I better improve both my skills (coding, linux, and security) and also my mental. I have a genuine question for y’all folks: How do you define what’s your next job going to be ? As in what you set your mind to, I guess. I’ve been through multiple stages of thoughts during the past two years and I find myself stuck.

On the one hand I work at a decent company and I have a great team with a lot of benefits and an OK salary but on the other hand I want change, more challenges and to get a little bit more of 💰(I’m not complaining about what I have but I’m clearly on the low tiers of the salary range for a software engineer).

At first I thought I wanted to completely change my work area and go for music, then I thought I wanted to work for the biggest IT players (Google, Microsoft, etc…). Turns out none of these two ideas really suit me. I also don’t want to work in a startup, I’ve only had bad experiences so far and don’t seek to reproduce them yet again.

So I guess a more precise question is: If you were in my shoes, with all that in mind, what would you do?

As for the reasoning as to why I’m asking here: devRant is literally the only place I know with so many people that work in the same field, but that also have a lot of different experiences and background 😁

Having a question regarding build number semantics (Im working on android app for that matter)

My current app build which is released is 5.3.6 (build number 94)

I already merged one feature to develop but haven't released it.

I also finished working on another feature but haven't merged it to develop yet.

Now my question is should I make a new build (5.4.0 with build number 95) and just merge to master, then release to google play (it would contain both two features)

Or should I make a new build 5.4.0 bn 95, merge to master, release it. And then make another build for the second feature 5.5.0 bn 96 and release that as well?

My reasoning would be to go with 2 separate builds and versions (in case my second feature messes up, I can revert it and also it will be easier to manage versions).

But then what about users: will they receive two updates from google play or only one (the latest version) ?

For an open temp role, we are looking for someone that knows and used Angular 1.5 and ECMAScript 6.. yet everyone we have interviewed so far only knows up to Angular 1 and doesn't even know a new version of JavaScript came out, or have never used it before.

So I'm thinking about trying to look into the dating scene again. I'm in my late 20's and about a year away from graduating college so I figured I have the time to try it again. The thing is the last time I was dating I was a freshmen and I had been in a long term thing but it flat-lined a year ago. My life is different now and meeting people has changed too.

How does someone who's a career focused developer find someone in the dating pool post-college? For an FYI I've done mainstream sites like eHarmony with a moderate amount of success but nothing that really lasted beyond 2 meetups. (Meeting people at random locations for the sake of it has never been my thing so bars are sort of a non starter).

Question regarding android. I am having a problem with retrofit (I am using moshi converter factory) and hope that you can help.

Basically I have a screen with 3 checkboxes. User is able to select any of these checkboxes, and also user is allowed to select none of them.

When user doesn't select any checkboxes and click complete button, I send a PATCH request to backend with a model which contains 3 null values.

Problem here is that PATCH request which is being sent doesn't include any properties which have been nulled.

I spent some time researching why retrofit/moshi doesn't serialize nulled properties and I found a fix.

So I have this line

.addConverterFactory(MoshiConverterFactory.create(moshi))

Which I replaced with

.addConverterFactory(MoshiConverterFactory.create(moshi).withNullSerialization())

Now nulls are serialized and I am able to send a PATCH request model with nulled values. However now I'm facing another problem. Across my app I'm using only one retrofit client and I don't want to serialize nulls for all requests. Also I don't want to create another retrofit client.

How can I fix this problem? As far as I've researched it seems that I need to add an adapter with toJson() and fromJson() methods and then somehow enable nullSerialization only for that adapter. However I don't completely understand that solution and not even sure how to handle it.
