Sometimes you run your code,
it doesn't work, so you run it again,
it works
Sometimes you open your fridge,
no food inside, so you close and open it again,
still no food inside12 -
I noticed that urban dictionary didn't have a definition for devRant.
So I posted one.
And it got rejected ):
*Bawls like a baby*
To the four people who will read this, if you're remotely close to being interested, let me know, I'll post it here.28 -
Fuxk yeah! My code works! It's 2AM, I'm happy and there's no one around, so I wrote a poem :-P
What was once impossible,
Is now close to completion,
Thanks to my debug statements,
Which now await their deletion.28 -
So my girlfriend (non techie) just saw my rant about how I'd give her a baby if she knew how to close vim in a proper way (she saw me on devRant, asked me to show it and read my rants) and so I showed her vim so she'd get the joke.
I than told her, how it worked and such so she'd see how it's not a regular text editor and told her to try and quit it, and to my amazement, she did!
Guess she's a keeper :')11 -

Thought this was kind of funny for us lady devs/programmers, and something we can relate to.
The lady in the image is an engineer/programmer and is getting married but doesn't have any girlfriends (since she works in a mostly male oriented field, like us). So instead of having female bridesmaids she had her close brogrammers / college classmates stand up in her wedding with her. I mean, it was probably less drama, anyways! 😂
I'm the only girl on my team so I def relate!
*not my pic*26 -
Boss: Can we add a [Close] button at the top right of the modal instead for all the items, the back at the lower left seems out of place.
Me: What modal? You mean move the back button to the top right of the page?
Boss: And make it say [Close]
Me: But it navigates Back. It's not a modal so it doesn't close. [Back] makes more sense than [Close].
Boss: Ok
...
Boss: Change the [Back] on the modal to [Close].
Me: But... fine...
Buttons all now say "Close", they all have double quotes. No one has said anything.18 -
I was in McDonald's and annoyed to see queues for all the self-service machines. I noticed one of them had nobody queueing though. Several people walked up to it, looked for two seconds, then just walk away. So naturally I had a look myself, and I saw that it was just a string displaying a bit wrongly. Hah!
So I walk up, close that order then make my own. Nothing at all wrong with it, people just have no clue about how computers work. Nobody even tried pressing the buttons after seeing that.
Of course I put it back to the broken screen before I left. I like chaos.rant ignorant people save me time mcdonald's literally whole minutes saved definitely won't be updated for ages huge companies screw up strings too7 -
So the bosses and general peeps at work never close our door properly.
Finally earning the "engineer" part of our job titles :p!5 -
Mum: Tom time to do something get off your computer
Me: *continues staring at computer*
Mum: Tom?
Me: ...
Mum: TOM
Me: Whaaa? *moves head slightly up but still doesn't take eyes off computer"
Mum: Please get off your computer there's stuff you've gotta do
Me: *finally looking up* OK just let me fix this one thing I'm so close
Mum: fine, 5 mins
*5 mins later:
Mum: come on Tom time to get off
Me: uuuggghhhhhhhh I'm nearly done please
Mum: hurry up
Me: *tries to hurry and finish as to not upset her* please I'm so close
Mum: *furious glance*
Me: *furiouser typing noises and frantic clicking*
Me: *finishes, attempts to run the program*
Program: *runs just fine and problem I was trying to fix was working great*
...
...
*something else breaks*
Me: ok mum please just this one thing
Mum: OFF28 -
This is just my token of appreciation for the Skype devs. Can't begin to say how much I hate it. Your android app is a joke even after a host of updates, your desktop client is an even bigger joke (atleast Linux Beta version, I know betas aren't supposed to be stable but this is ridiculous).
You have reinvented chat clients to be extremely bulky, cumbersome and very hard to sync across devices. And you have managed to make it "buffer" more than a YouTube video does on a 2G network. I for one, am blown over by how you did that. And to top it all, you can't close the client on Linux atleast! All you did is just override the close button so that it only minimises it. Brilliant piece of work right there!
Why the hell can't you just close the client and run it in the background the proper way like everyone else does? Why does it have to take 20 *** seconds to open a message? The only reason I am stuck with this is some wierdos in the office still only use this. Get your shit together 😡
Ahh.. I feel much better now.18 -
Made this for my mom for one of her projects.
May not be 100% accurate, but I was lazy so that means it's close enough. 😋2 -
Today I needed the scroll lock key.
I was running a super long test suite, one which puts a green dot on the screen every 500ms, so you can't scroll up. I needed to view some output of an earlier command... in other words, I needed to lock the automatic scrolling of the terminal.
That is what the scroll lock key was made for.
A momentous occasion.
Then I found out that a while ago, I used the macro function of my keyboard to rebind the that key... to close the current terminal window. 😡7 -
Client hasn’t responded to my questions for over 2 weeks, so I close her ticket.
”Why the hell did you close the ticket!? The problem still exists!”
Sorry, I’m not a mind reader..3 -
My first programming job started at a fairly small gamming company. We were pretty close because we were so small and sometimes jokes were a bit too personal. Anyway, during my 3 months probation period, the team lead invited the whole company at his house for a party. Long story short, I got wasted, and when the CEO arrived I went to him and told him something like: Yo dawg, let's drink, don't be a pu**y. The sad part is that I cannot remember doing that and apparently I shouted outloud. I had some pretty interesting meetings the next days. Came too close to being fired 😅.4
-
So I'm doing my thing... Suddenly all open windows start closing one by one and computer starts a shut down.. and i realize the windows update is coming..
But like.. can you at least give me a 2 minutes heads up? How the fuck such a process gets approved in microsoft?
"Yeah just close everything and force restart.. it's fine"14 -
University dorm admin story:
One guy had a problem with his ethernet cable. He broke RJ45 and wanted new one, so he asked on dorms group what to do. He was pointed to admin. So he grabbed a knife, cut the cable as close to wall as he could and walked with it to the admin guy. He said that he had problem with his cable and want new RJ45, so admin applied it on the both sides. Then he asked how to plug it back to the wall :D19 -
A few years back we hired a new guy for our sales department. He worked with us for less than a week and seemed pretty normal.
Until one day he came into my office sat reeeeally close to me and actually whispered into my ear: "last night around midnight i was a bit hungry so i got up and fried some sausages".
Then he looked at me with the weirdest grin ever and just sat there for like 15 seconds not moving a muscle.

WHY THE FUCK DOES MY BOSS HAVE ME MOCKING FUCKING RECAPTCHA API RESPONSES? IT'S SO FUCKING STUPID
I CAN'T MOCK THE RECAPTCHA JS METHODS SO I HAVE TO MAKE VALID-LOOKING JSON RESPONSES AND I DON'T HAVE A FUCKING CLUE HOW ANY OF IT FUCKING WORKS
THIS IS THE STUPIDEST THING ANYONE HAS EVER ASKED OF ME (okay, it isn't, but it's pretty damned close.) AND IT'S DURING MY BLOODY PERFORMANCE REVIEW.40 -
My Galaxy S7 Edge fell onto the gravel road as I was getting out of my car and the screen shattered into tons of small cracks!! Just a few days before I was gonna sell it to somebody for the same price I bought it for! 😫

My mother seems to disengage her brain when using a computer, so you must give instructions in exacting detail...
Me: Close that window.
Mom: Um, ok?
Me: ... Click the little red button at the top left...
MS Word: Save document? Yes / No
Mom: ... Now what?
Me: Well, do you want to save that?
Mom: Yes! ...
Me: ... so... click Yes...
... and I die a little more inside...5 -

Who sits there so late throughout the night?
The developer it is, with his code so bright;
He holdeth the mouse tightly clasped in his hand,
He holdeth it safely, he keepth it dragging.
"Oh bug, wherefore do you seek to hide?"
"Look, developer, the sysadmin is close by our side!
Dost see not the sysadmin with his usbchain?"
"Oh dear, 'tis the blur increasing its radius."

Started testing out the concept of a new application I'm developing (nothing special)
I always seem to play games instead of coding, so I'm developing a trainer which monitors for any open games and checks whether I have coded enough in a day to play games.
If I haven't coded for long enough, it will force close the game and warn me.
Further development to happen.27 -
I'm real tired of my coworkers always trying to one up me and being elitist about their code. Like I get it, you think PHP is shit, C is so much better than Java. Wow, you must be so knowledgeable! /s
Just because you're bashing on bad languages and talking shit doesn't mean you write good code, and in fact your code isn't top quality, I've read it. All you're going to accomplish with an elitist mindset is close yourself off to improving, and that's probably the worst thing you can do as a developer.8 -
When you accidentally start visual studio, and have to wait an eternity for it to load so you can close it..6

Rant.
So I work in the service desk and the moment and one of our clients use Mac's.
One of the end users called up saying that it was being slow and sluggish.
End user: hi my Mac is being slow.
Me: when did you last reboot it?
End user: last night
*Remotely connects*
*Runs uptime in terminal*
Me: are you sure you rebooted it last night?
End user: yes I close the lid every night...
The up time was 68 days...9 -
So I'm sitting down at a park bench coding. People are getting close & keep staring at my MacBook. I better leave...8

Some of the dinosaurs maintaining legacy systems are rather well meaning, but somewhat frustratingly don't seem to have updated their knowledge of what counts as "a lot of storage space" beyond the early 90's. Just asked one of them if they could dump all the legacy logs to AWS each day so we could keep them for 6 months or so (they're rolled over weekly otherwise.)
"Well I mean we can, but are you sure? *All* the logs? You could end up storing close to 100MB of logs a month! Won't that be prohibitively expensive?!"
It's rather cute really.11 -
What I've learned so far in Ubuntu
1. Never mess with root directory
2. Never mess with scary command
3. Never install additional DEs
4. Never close terminal while something is going on
Or you have to install Ubuntu again
Although I love Ubuntu7 -
Hi DevRant fam! Unfortunately we've had it quite tough here in my beautiful land of Australia! So here is a pic of a local beach close to my home and fortunately a much nicer day! Hope you like it 😊6

this happened in the first project of a small software company.
the contract said: project will be finished only until customer satisfaction
the customer was never satisfied. So, the company had to close and open with a different brand name1 -
So I had a very long team viewer session with my colleague and after 3 hours we were finished and I went straight to pornhub after the session. But the problem was that I forget to close the team viewer session and 30 minutes later I saw him disconnect. FML, I’ll see him tomorrow11

Got an 8:30 class in the morning.
Me: so close to fixing this bug. Just a bit more.

True story. Some years ago I worked, for a network manufacturer in the support department. One of me jobs was to help end-customer (private people) over the phone, who could not get online.
One day a 60+ year old woman called the support line, because se could not get on the Internet. And because our name was on the router, she called our support.
A colleague of mine took the call, and we could quickly see by his expression the it was "One of those calls". The minutes went by and they had gotten no closer to a solution after 45 min.
That was when I herd my colleague say "Well from what you tell, all the settings here are fine. Can you please close all the windows, so we can look at other settings". My colleague the looked weird and said, "She just told me it takes some minutes to close all the windows, so please hang on.".
After 2 min time the woman came back to the phone and said "I have now closed all the windows in the house, except one ceiling window that only my husband can reach. Hope it doesn't matter".2 -
So our university website was recently refurbished with new design. But fucking hell it's bad. Not only the whole website is full of bugs, the design choices are extremely poor.
Sometimes, when I open a course page, it opens a modal with undefined as it's title. And I have to click close button ten times to close the modal.
I can't even blame university. The guy was a former student and Uni probably trusted him. What a retard!5 -
So new PM is forcing everyone to use Google sheets as our main project management tool as it's free and does what she likes... Was so close to just quitting.
More rage: how the fudge does she think it's acceptable for every 'to-do' no matter how big or small needs to be recorded in a sheet with roughly 30 columns @#&#&£ work is going to grind to a halt whilst we fill it in. So many better tools to use! Oh it gets worse it's 1 sheet per a person so the longer you work there the bigger the sheet gets the more time you need to spend to find, record and even open the freaking document up.11 -
So spent almost all my time on break just hoping to catch the elusive 512++, never came so I went to bed and slept... Woke up and by the skin of my teeth!!!!9

Fuck, I'm too tired to rant about shit. Life is really starting to go better and I just...don't know what to rant about, so I've been quiet for the past couple months.
Uhhhhh, whenever I close my laptop the screen stays on and seeps through but I'm too lazy to actually mess with it to make it turn off when I close it?
I've been hanging out with my best friend again lately and she's the best fucking person ever?
OH WAIT, I'M BROKE, THERE'S SOMETHING (I've spent like 10 minutes typing, just trying to think of shit to say)! But I'm just bad with managing money and I get paid on Saturday anyways..
Guys. I don't know what to even rant about anymore. Life is finally going good enough that I don't feel the need to rant all the time.2 -
So i was contributing to this project on github with a dangerously close (self-assigned) deadline and my friends called me to play some DotA. Well, i can say i didn't let anyone down.7

I just pressed CTRL + W to close a rant, but I was reading on my phone so I closed a browser tab on my computer instead.4

How to open source 101:
1. Have GitHub repo
2. Install a stale-and-auto-close bot
3. Never respond to issues
4. Have a project so good it has no open issues
Why?!5 -
So, the company I’m working for is finally merging with its sister company. That means budget for upgrading our infrastructure. And guess who volunteered to be in charge of it, and future sysops. That’s me.
Previously we haven’t had anything close to a sysops, and our servers has been neglected and never updated nor upgraded since 2012. We even had a Windows Server 2012 running with rdp wide open...2 -
Flexible working hours, Home Office, fair compensation, working on a greenfield product 🥰.
I was in a bad spot two years ago jobwise and I don't regret jumping the ship for a second.
I would never have guessed that flexible hours and WFH would be so beneficial to my mental health!
Not everything is perfect all the time, but it gets pretty damn close all things considered.3 -
Forgot to close() connection to the postgres and opening the new connection was inside of the query loop... So I successfully overfilled all the possibie 100 connections to 5 dbs out of 6. I have no direct access to them so I cant delete them. I'm still on probation and I have to go to lead dev and tell him that I messed up...18

Earlier today I went to the store to buy some new goods. Noticed some other person who was listening to music.. wirelessly, just like I often do. Wow, that's not something that I see every day. Normally everyone still has these wired headsets. So I took a closer look.

I shouldn't have. He was wearing AirPods. You were so close bud.. so close!3 -
My last day before vacation, Friday after hours,
Me as a Junior dev, not that experienced with bash.
An unfortunately with root on a prod machine.
I wrote a script and wanted it to stop at a specific point, but couldn’t remember which of those cmd it was so I wrote all of them.
Quit
Close
Stop
Halt
Exit
Ran the script.
Wanted to kill myself.
I haven’t had the privs to turn on the VM again.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
🤦🏽♂️
I definitely learned a lot!2 -
Apple macbook engineering department hard at work:

My company’s upper leadership is sooo focused on the NUMBER of defects that are open on our project and only the number. We give each defect a priority of P0, P1, or P2. You would think this would help prioritize and strategize our plan to fix them. But nope. Every week we have some arbitrary “goal” to hit. A number purely made up by clueless leadership as to what makes a “quality” product.
On Friday’s, managers start harassing devs to merge their fixes and for QA to close out defects. So effectively rushing to hit that arbitrary number or else we’ll have to work Saturday.
Meanwhile they want more test automation coverage to reduce the incoming defect rate. But when the fuck do we have time to develop said tests when all you want is the defect closed to bring down your precious little number?!
They’d rather us close 25 P2 defects to bring the number down rather than 10 P0 or P1 defects. These leaders are so incompetent it kills me! Without any back story, they’re ultimately the reason we’re in this position in the first place! Argghhh!2 -
Anyone else taking Harvard's CS50 via edX? It's so awesome! You get a better understanding of Computer Science and stuff. I'm loving C! It feels so close to communicating with the machine. Memory allocation fascinates me, too. Is this why it's fast? If you feel like you're lacking with the CS fundamentals although you can build apps or websites already, I recommend this. This is better than my whole years in college!9

My head hurts so much right now...
So there's a beautiful hilarious woman next door and we're getting really close (friend close), but she's 26 and she's just messing with my head so much, wtf is going off???77 -
@dfox the reply and modify buttons on the last comment in a rant on iphone6 is very close to the social media icons and comment button.
So close that its easy to hit the wrong one. A little extra padding in the bottom so that you can scroll half a centimeter more would help a lot.3 -
A dev posts a link to his website on a dev group I admin, first thing said site does is ask for my location. I look, no map not logically apparent reason for it, so I close the site.
Ask they guy why he is asking for such private info and he responds to tell me that he does not think a person's exact location is that private, and if he really wanted it he would just use the IP address.
Like how many fucking levels of dense is that.5 -
So many steps and guilt to close accounts these days....
Even had to Google how to close it ... It's not in account settings...7 -
Teaching a relatives boyfriend VBA so he can edit macros in excel, he has an interview next week as a junior data analyst and this a requirement. This is his laptop keyboard. Pay close attention to the placement of ctrl, shift etc. and the lack of a backspace.9

So close to burnout that:
- having troubles sleeping
- nauseous all week
- barely can eat anything
- muscles starting to jam
- unable to focus

Two days ago I was so close to being single again. Reason? I was in the zone when my fiancée called, the ring of the phone jarred me so much that I contemplated smashing the phone at the wall. I didn't but just turned it off. I guess she must have called a couple more times because when we finally spoke she was so angry that she threatened to get her stuff from my place. Luckily I later got back in the zone, and luckier still, I have a girlfriend.8

My job is so boring... they hired me to work front-end using Vue and I'm doing back-end using Django.
I found myself so bored I think about creating an app called Big Dick Energy - A Dick Contest when I'm close to comatose.2 -
i'm writing a custom web server for a project (esp32 based)
each 4 connections system crashes (cannot bind socket anymore)
i was so angry with espressif thinking that was their fault (bad implementation of posix sockets)
but is mine...
today i did another code review and I just discovered that i missed a fucking close() in the websockets handler
fuck
fuck
i wasted a month on this issue.1 -
Why the hell do so many Android games require internet? I want to play it in undergound when I have nothing better to do! If I had Internet I could be doing something usefull instead of playing stupid games! Even devRant survives by caching in the stations and doesn't f***ing close whenever I'm offline!5

So I'm in Italy, close to Milan, the biggest infected zone in the whole country.
I'm still going to work as we're in 2 people in the office and we're alone in a 90 square meters office, so no big deal after all.
My city is actually empty right now, so I'm just going from home to work speeding on my motorcycle (no really that speeding, since my motorcycle isn't that powerful)
So nothing really changed actually and I'm still working the same way I did before8 -
Felt great because I overclocked my 7700k to over 5.2GHz (with a tower fan). A few days later I was streaming Overwatch, won a match, blue screened...
So close to winning the silicone lottery!5 -
The designer of a new version of an app sent me the the new designs. I immediately noticed the menu-icon in the bottom right. (In a tab bar)
This is not common and even discouraged by design docs of iOS and Android. So I told him that and he thought we could try it.
After scrolling through the designs I saw the screen where the menu was open; the close button was also on the bottom right. I told him that users are not used to have a menu close button on that position. He said "Every other company is doing it wrong, so we're here to make that difference".. The only thing I thought was 'Okay, so Google is doing it all wrong all the time.'.
So now it's in the app and I don't like it.18 -
i made a mock code that wouldn't close to prank my colleagues. this boy tried the x button and it didn't work, so he went for ctrl alt del and the pop up showed up to confirm and when pressing yes it still wouldn't close1

Mfw you try out Atom and it crashes the moment you open anything even slightly big. Then you try to close it out and reopen it but it decides it should start off right where you left it-suspended in time... doing absolutely nothing.
On another note, it looks beautiful, has many extensions, and is highly customizable but it gets bogged down so quickly.8 -
I've had a pretty stressful week and I'm fairly close to burnnout.
I have Spotify running on one monitor and GitKraken (dark theme) running on the other.
A naff song begins to play on Spotify so go to open an alternative playlist.
Clicking upon any song title doesn't do anything at all.
After a couple of minutes of think WTF realized I was clicking upon commit messages in GitKraken.
I need to get some sleep. :/1 -
The problem when you fall asleep while coding...
you may have really good thoughts before you pass out, you want to formulate them properly so "you" in the morning can get to work immediately, so you close your eyes just for a sec to think. And then you wake up at 10am and you have no idea what was supposed to be the ending of that TODO.
shit5 -
I spend the whole day decoding Assembly code for special formulas that we require for a current project.
And the client doesn't have them anywhere else.
There's only that old desktop application - written in assembly.
My Pc and I never felt so close before...
If it sounds like it was fun, it wasn't.
NOT. AT. ALL.1 -
I really invested into this work from home lifestyle, moving in an appartment where i could have my own office, upgrading my personal workstation, leaving overpriced locations close to subways behind.. so i do hope it will remain like this for at least a few more years (or why not, even forever for dev roles)
It's way better than a shitty office placed in location equally incomfortable for everyone
Otherwise.. well, there is always the option to go freelancing from home3 -
That lovely moment when a client calls out of the blue at 4:30PM (we close at 5), 3 weeks before scheduled launch and says, "My website goes down tomorrow so where are we at with the new site?" So...I scrambled all day today to get the site done and it turns out they don't even own their domain or control their DNS. (facepalm) They put in a 30 day cancellation with their current provider and didn't bother to mention we had barely 2 weeks to develop a full custom site.7

So @Linux gave me a website to check which happens to have a tutorial on how to close ssh session after x inactive minutes, and now every time I'm back to the terminal I find my self out T_T
but it is a good life savior if I forgot my session on work computer lol11 -
That happiness after you are so close to open the closest window and throw the pc, but you manage to fix the problem.
FUCK YOU GRUB I WON!!!!!!!!!!!! SUCK IT! -
I finally finished what I considered the biggest challenge thus far: rant editing, deleting and also favoriting/unfavoriting. You can already post rants through my app as well! I am getting so damn close to being done with the basic things. After that - notifications!3

You guys ever get "Project Zoned"?
When you've been consulting with a client for the past few weeks and then in the end they say "I've decided I'm not going to move forward because it's better for me, blah blah blah. But if I did you'd be the person to do it."
But you spent all that time trying to close the project that seemed so attainable at the time, thinking about the money you could be making. Then you get hit with that shit stick.

Oh my FUCKING GOD i HATE VISUAL STUDIO CODE, I just wanted to FUCKING OPEN A C++ CLASS IN VISUAL STUDIO 2019 FROM UNREAL ENGINE but for some FUCKING REASON my SCRIPT EDITOR WAS SET TO FUCKING VS CODE, and now 80% of my FUCKING CPU is being FUCKING USED AND I CAN'T FUCKING CLOSE IT AND ITS FUCKING FROZEN SO I CAN'T EVEN EDIT THE CLASS AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA anyways thankyou for coming to my ted-talk8

So, a close relative of me is a local politician in my hometown.
I managed his political website for a while but then I completely left it in the hand to who deal whit is PR.
Today he emailed me to update only the header photo. No big deal.
After a bit of scrambling I find what I used when I made that.
FML I hate me of the past -
Aaaaaw fuck yea. I'm finally at my mother's, for my first holidays since late December 2017, and I FINALLY can sleep as much as I want without being bothered. I just slept 30+ hours in 3 days, which is close to what I sleep in a week. Still tired though, but I feel so much more relaxed than the evening I arrived at my mom's place 3 days ago *.*

So, all through high school I grew out my hair. The last time I cut it was actually my sophomore year, so 2017. I've been thinking about cutting it for a bit, maybe do a different hairstyle. Last night I was hanging out with a few coworkers, and I decided that I'm gonna shave my head, and let it all grow back. It'll probably take at least a couple years, but why the hell not?
Pic is me from like last January? I haven't even trimmed my hair since 2017 so I have bad ends now, and it's basically stopped growing. So the picture is kinda close to what it is now, just a bit longer (like a bit past my chest)21 -
Hey buddy pal mate, yeah, i get it, you a good frontend dude but if your page lags on my phone, im gonna just close it and never open it again, so dont you fucking use every possible overhead framework known to man.

Always wanted to try this rubber duck debugging everybody is talking about. Sadly I do not have a rubber duck at my disposal, so this tennis ball has to do (the colors match, so thats close enough I think ッ).4

When you get so excited that your program finally works you accidentally close I t and it doesn't save :(1

Getting a ticket that a feature is having problems when you triple-click it. Otherwise it works fine.

Damn, I really love programming. ❤️
It's way more uplifting and satisfactory than having a significant other.
Even my botched WP installs are more stable than most pseudo-longterm relationships nowadays.
Oh yeah and another thing:
How is it so extremely hard or even impossible for a lot of women to admit their own fucking wrongdoings to a close person?
Mind boggling.19 -
I'm having way to many problems with my server... :(
I'm so close to just reinstalling everything at this point.. Buying a six-pack of Monster and doing it over night :/7 -
Probably taking our tech directors mobile phone and putting in the ceiling. Kept ringing him from our desks and he couldn't work out where it had gone, but could hear the theme from Rocky, so knew it was close!

So apparently google doesn't give a fuck about your money. Yes I didn't use it right now, i purchased the dev account so I will be able to publish later when I need it and already used it in the past. How is it that they will close an account that you've payed for for inactivity?
ps.: Now I understand why has the play store full garbage apps. I will do that too...
pps: I know it's only 25$ but I still payed that to have access in the first place2 -
So… I prefer nano over other terminal editors (Mainly because I don’t understand how to use others properly) and I wasn’t really aware of the VISUAL and EDITOR environment variables. So on my Arch machine most things would default to vi. Vi to me is like an annoying pop-up that really doesn’t want you to close it (Tho, one thing I did learn eventually was how to close it ). So at some point I quickly wanted to edit crontab as root and I just couldn't manage to get crontab to use nano. So what did I do?
sudo pacman -R vi
ln -s /usr/bin/nano /usr/bin/vi
I symlinked nano to vi and it finally worked. I know that there are probably countless ways this could’ve been done better but in that case I wouldn't have posted it here under wk81 ;)5 -
When project managers are panicking and you know you are really so close from done, a few fixes and everything will fall into place. But manager is on your neck because "nothing is working" now you must take time to be their psychologist instead of working on what is actually making them panic 🙃 development is a rough space. One bug can stand in front of working products just like that
I really wanna say, please fuck off for a few hours. Thanks bye.3 -
When you make fried eggs after you cook them abit put some water on them and then close them with a lid so they will cook evenly with the heat of the evaporating water

A customer once wanted buttons that would close the mask in an interface where the only way to close the mask was to click a default "OK" button. 🤔
So in the end we implemented a script on the customer's buttons that would send a calculated number of multiple keypresses of tab, tab, tab and finally enter on the default button. 🤑
It is still running in production and I will never ever touch it again! 😁 -
That sweet feeling when the project is over and you can finally close all the 99+ tabs on the browser.
Feeling so happy right now! :) -
I get some error when deleting an azure service so I put a support ticket asking for help. Just as I am about to close my computer for the day I receive an email saying:
"Product team will disable the account xxxxx from backend".
The xxxxx is our subscription number. The subscription that hosts not only that service but also production servers and databases, storage accounts containing backups, etc.
I replied to the email so hopefully disaster is avoided otherwise tomorrow wont be a happy day.6 -
Isn't Perl a beutiful language? Just check the beutiful screenshot of a function I just written...
Also this is so beutiful. Did you know that you can actually print directly from a perl script?:
$qp = new PostScript::Simple(papersize => "A4",direction => "RightDown",coordorigin => "LeftTop", colour => 0, eps => 0, units => "pt");
$qp->newpage;
$qp->setfont("Courier", 20);
$qp->text(20,20,"Hello Devrant");
$psock = IO::Socket::INET->new(PeerAddr => "192.168.1.40", PeerPort => "9100", Proto => "tcp");
if ($psock) {
$psock->autoflush(1);
print $psock $qp->get();
close($psock);

I so want to switch from Eclipse to vscode. It feels so lightweight. But what makes me going back to eclipse everytime I try to switch to vscode are the little details.
why does the autocomplete popup close when moving the cursor left or right? In eclipse it just adapts the contents of the autocomplete content accordingly. Look at this issue to get what i mean: https://github.com/microsoft/...
And maybe vote for it too 😅3 -

Why is netbeans, or Java in general, so fucking bad at handling memory ? I mean, I'm literally doing nothing on my code and I see my IDE consuming more and more RAM, to some point it goes over 1GB so I have to close then reopen it to "flush" the memory taken...
It's 2017, how the fuck can't we still manage to actually use a correct amount of RAM when I open a barely 10MB project ??
And it applies to everything related to Java. Like Android, Minecraft and other Java based softwares...18 -
A personal AI assistant. Something like Jarvis from Iron Man.
Learned pretty quickly that it is very close to impossible without the resources of the largest corporation in the world. So I've given up.11 -
This senior engineer had this kid spend most of a day tracing down all of the instances of a certain variable so they could make heavy changes to the software. We work under a change management system of course and all of this led to two weeks of work outside of any of this. The senior engineer ended up 🔥 and the kid very close.
I'm still trying to figure out what makes someone do something like that knowing the outcome. -
I've worked on a year to replace an old legacy system after years of shitty maintenance. We're almost there. So damn fucking close.1

Logging work in Jira, because it goes against the whole ethos of trusting people to get the work done when they have to log exactly how much time they spent on each individual story. It also doesnt account for pair programming. so 2 people log the same time and it looks like the story took twice as long. I’ll stop now because I’m precariously close to opening the “time based estimates” can of worms and thats for another rant.4

Discretion is advised
I had a bizarre nightmare where I wake up tied, my head inside the glass cube, my eyelids stitched to my eyebrows so I can’t close my eyes, and then @rutee07 pours drain cleaner into that cube, through immense pain I feel my eyes turning cloudy and skin on my face turning into soap, meanwhile drain cleaner goes down my throat
And then I woke up. This dream was the reason behind my dice game liquid PH rant I posted not much earlier.3 -
I was talking about the mobile game The Room around another student yesterday and mentioned how it's like a escape room type of game.
Today I got 3 different types of escape room commercials on Instagram/Facebook. Never gotten anything close to this regarding ads.
I've never felt so afraid, or spied on.5 -
How do you guys deal with managers who message you after hours about work? My slack and email keep going off and it's been causing me a bit of anxiety. I decided to close the slack app on my computer and change the notification preferences so that I can breathe for a bit today. I am a frontend dev intern.7

I am trying to apply for a student credit card. Should be relatively simple, but guess what: it isn't. First there was a question on your income. I didn't know if you had to include your student loan by issued by the goverment and after calling the bank, the answer seemed to be no. And the form didn't succeed because your income should be higher than 1 euro. So I've contacted the bank again and it seems that you could just fill in your student loan as income. Okay, so that should fix the problem. So I came very close to completing the form, gave the website me an error in the last step!1

So I'm wondering how I'm getting a date that, according to the settings should not be that one in that case, but is pretty fucking close (so much so that I first thought that was the correct one).
Then I realise it's because I'm hitting a case where I can't get all the necessary info so I literally made a method called GuessDate and it tries to guess the date based on available info and it did an amazing job, but it didn't have all the data so it's slightly off.
I both love and hate programming right now :)2 -
One last feature and I’ll be done with a project holy fuck. I’m so fucking close just one more class and it’s done and I can move on to something I like a little more.2

I'm close to one year at this company, and so much has changed. the amount of responsibility i have now is insane compared to last year. we'll have an intern this year, so there's gonna be someone learning the ropes from me. I'm having a say in bigger projects , I'm schooling people way over my pay grade, people actually come after me for help now, that's insane. what a fucking year1

Ok so one of the advantages of Java is that it has a huge ecosystem of libraries.
Then why is there no fucking decent graph library?! I just need to display this planar graph. I'm so fucking close to learning c++ and using boost to layout the graph.
I'm seriously stuck with this since like a week.

Back to using WSL because I suck at installing windows apps on Wine (and that I can't seem to connect to a WiFi with PEAP on Linux that the network admin know how to except on Windows).
So can't exactly rice Windows. I know I can with raindock and all that but its not the same as Linux. So I'm on WSL, installed tmux and wouldn't you know it, I found plenty of dot tmux files on Github.
But alas, its not the same as i3wm but its close.8 -
Since my ISP doesn't allow port forwards on that port, does anyone want to open their port 445 (if not otherwise occupied by Microsoft-DS) and have netcat reply an empty string or so any request (such as an empty string) sent over TCP (or has anyone already done so)? It would help me out a lot with testing out some networks full port range (since portquiz.net's hoster blocks that port) and would take close to no bandwidth for you.6
-
!rant, but a feature request.
@dfox, whenever I use the comment box, it covers the whole screen. So, if I wanna tag somebody in my comment, I gotta close the comment box once, memorize their username since there's no autocomplete on @'s and then type back.
Either the comment box could be shortened, or autocomplete be added to user tag function, which could atleast detect the users commenting on the current thread (since programmers suck at memorising).
What say, DevRanters?5 -
whenever I suspend my laptop my openvpn would get stuck on reconnecting and I'd have to ctrl c and wait for like minutes so it would correctly close. so I only used VPN when I really needed it.
but then I found out: mullvad (my VPN host supports wireguard! and so wireguard is a more passive protocol, and doesn't need to keep open the connection. so now I can just set my VPN to "always on" and not worry about it anymore, yay!
ps: you should have seen my face when I found out mullvad gives away free stickers! :D -
What is wrong with Stackoverflow mods and so called seasoned users? Why is everyone in such a rush to close questions and point you to other questions which has no relevance.
Once they do this, is just over. Explaining why they are wrong makes no diff. And you can't just repost. The question is just dead.
Genuinely think they should just burn in hell. Sick a holes. If you're not interested in answering or helping at least stay out of people's business.12 -
Does anyone else get triggered when you use the python socket .recv() and the server does not return anything so the program just stays there indefinitely? For me, I can't even Ctrl+C it so I have to close the entire window. It's especially annoying when I start a server in the interpreter (quite a bit of lines) and I have to rewrite it afterwards.7

I always design my UIs to be cold, dead, sterile, and painstakingly perfect. It should be dry, so dry that if you were to drop my UI into the ocean, it would absorb all the water down to the last drop and remain dry still. I want people looking at it to feel dehydrated, short of breath and mesmerized. It should be so extreme that you have no choice but to stare in fascination. Fun fact: I once forgot to close a parenthesis, and the code that spilled out became the Sahara desert. It’s dryer than her vagina when you explain your Vim config.7

So my business developer informs me that he couldn't log in to a particular account. He as tried to log in but couldn't. I used my account and logged in fine. Tries with the credentials he gave again and was bounced. After about 15 minutes of wasting my time, I found out was giving me wrong username.
"Check the username again" I said as calm as I could.
Realizes his mistake and
" oh ... Sorry"...

tl;dr fuck me, I'm stupid, I suck at my job and I wanna die but can't complain because I'm labeled ungrateful
I am -this- close... -this- close to strangling someone, or myself for that matter, over trying to finish this goddamned website that I regret taking on just because I needed the money.
You make me rework my website design three times and eventually end up micro-managing me and keep on making me make small changes that even I can't figure out, nor can anyone else for that fucking matter because you want it to be 'perfect'. God I'm so irritated right now let me fucking sleep. I want out so bad but fuck me sideways with my gaping asshole I need the fucking money.
I wanna quit this shit so bad, it's making me hate myself and throwing me into an existential crisis whether or not am I even a good designer / developer because I just can't satisfy this perfectionist asshole and need to greet him with a smile every fucking time to maintain good terms between our startups.undefined i just wanna sleep i don't wanna do this anymore just someone kill me i hate my job right now8 -

Every time I pick up a ticket, it turns out to be a duplicate and another engineer is already working on it or it already is done. So I close the ticket and collect the story points. (Yes, morally correct would be to close it as duplicate with 0 SPs.)7

So... This is the deal... I'm currently working part time (15 hours a week) while studying. We have a pretty hectic week at school and my boss is in the states. He told me I could take the week off. Great!
I now have a mailbox close to exploding and 20+ hours of work that has to be done this week. Bye bye weekend -
Finishing up the last few edits on the WordPress site from hell, client is here to see the finished product, senior dev looks over at me "so are the registration/login forms and sign out button working correctly again?"
Me: "yeah I'm just checking one thing first-SON OF A BITCH"
senior: "that does not instill confidence that the forms are working"
Wasn't a big deal, forgot to close a div and, well you know how that works -
Get given two asset packs for a project I confirm with project lead, project manager and CTO which one they want to use. They then confirm with client and they all decided asset pack 2. Ok great, 3 months later week before deadline "we need asset pack 1 used instead"... Different resolution, different aspect ratio and now get nagged every few minutes how done is it, and that it's vital we meet the deadline. So close to just walking out that door.

My relationship with recruiters have always been a love/hate thing in the past. Some are super pushy and borderline bully you into accepting a job if they can.
A close friend of mine has lost their job recently due to COVID-19 related layoffs, and is now in a very vulnerable position both economically and psychologically. Enter recruiters.
This particular recruiting firm in my city is quite notorious for being unpleasant. I just hate how they treat people, and specially in my friend's case, pushing them for information like their previous salary when the recruiter doesn't even have a job lead!
I know they work commission and really want to close the $$$, but sheesh! So irritating!5 -
MS Teams with multiple work accounts account swap flow:
1. Try to close the company-bound login modal 10x while being fast enough to also close the main Teams window.
2. Realize it's not gonna work, so login with the account you don't want to be on.
3. Have to type your phone pincode then accept the MS Authenticator login, and retype your pin code.
4. Finally logged in just to log back out and get the generic account choice modal so repeat step 2 & 3 with the correct account.1 -
I just witnessed Microsoft trolling preview setup.
Let me set the scene for you. I was in Visual Studio and saw the notifications and I had a minute so I decided to check them and saw there were updates, this one being one of them. I went to update and first it asked me to close all instances of VS. Fair enough, I close VS and continue. Instead of taking a minute at most to install it took ~10 minutes which is insane, but fine, I stopped my work for it... And then I'm greeted by this gem. Restart your computer for freaking .NET core and trolling.. I'm sorry, tooling... Preview... What the actual fuck Microsoft?2 -
I got tired of the tedium of navigating dropdowns and required fields to open and close user stories, so I wrote a script with the following syntax:

So as a student I often wonder how my future workplace will look like. So..
Show us your workspace! And not just the desk you sit by but the bigger picture. Personal office? Open landscape? Lonesome forgotten room in the basement of the building?
And which is the best? Close to the team to cooperate or fortress of solitude?2 -
A lady that I have been talking to suddenly went radio silent on me. And refused to answer my messages and calls.
Anyhow, I blocked her and deleted her contact but I’m so heartbroken. I hope I recover from this heartache. It’s so close. I thought it was gonna work. I thought this was the one.
This is just why I love computers. When you mess up, they tell you you mess up and even point to the line and column. Humans are damn difficult.4 -
Just helped in the little 'Büdchen' (kiosk comes close, but in reality it is more of an little super market) around the corner to Update the firmware of a money bill verifier and counter... As there are new 50 Euro bills.
God. Serial to USB. After running installer and starting firmware update, the owner was a bit frightened as it took so long....

Setup. 30 secs. Firmware. 6 Minutes. XD -
So I have this code written in node:
Function connect(){
const client = net.blahblah
client.on('close', () => {
Connect()
}

As the connect is called from within the close call back, it wouldn't be recursive right? Like if it disconnected a million times, it shouldn't throw a recursion error or use up a bunch of memory right? Or am I thinking about it wrong?2 -
After weeks of constant rush, I finally managed to have one week dedicated entirely to reduce Tech Debt.
It felt so good to close all these todos, finally write those tests, that documentation :)1 -
I am very close to being a violent psychopath from "Always code as if the person who ends up maintaining your code is a violent psychopath who knows where you live."
Foreach within a foreach with counters and a check if the counters match in the inner foreach and in that case do something.... And that's not even the worst part of the code I have to modify ever so slightly... Fml3 -

The new MacBooks look so nice. And Mojave is pretty nice, and dark theme! And the touch bar! The price is quite high but for the first time I'm actually debating getting one... Almost. But:
Why no escape key apple! You were so close! A physical escape key at the cost of your touch bar being 1 inch smaller! Is that too much to ask!
Many programmers use Mac. I can see why, it's a bsd variant, it's almost a Linux box except it's supported and accepted by the non-geeks of the world.
Many programmers use Vim! It's great!
So it stands to reason that a "not insignificant" amount of Mac users use Vim. Why would you do this to us? Or at least offer a "Vim model! With physical escape key, some nice out of the box vim buttons for the touch bar, a greatly inflated pricetag... Yknow, the works!" But nothing?! You almost had me apple.6 -
Just got my new phone today. My old Huawei was acting up, so I replaced it with an island model: an Asus. Man, I have read lots and lots of horror stories about bloatware that came with the previous version of their skin, ZenUI. Their UX people must have been listening, because this phone came with fewer preinstalled apps than any phone I've ever had, and that includes a Nexus 5. And so far the only preinstalled apps I've had to disable are the default keyboard and chrome.
It's as close to AOSP as I've ever had without using a rom. I'm pretty stoked! -
So, apparently the female front-enders won't get fired even though they submit works that even doesn't meet up close to the requirements.

Literally begging my brain to relax so I can sleep.
I've gotten my drive and passion for coding back (Working on a project that'll be released for beta soon) but unfortunately, the sleepless nights came back with it.
It's currently 6am and I want to sleep but soon as I close my eyes, I see more features, optimizations and potential bug fixes. I have a slight migraine which is quite annoying.
Wish I could turn my brain off on command. Please make it stop 😔17 -
So I got my GCSE results back yesterday. Its the first year with the new 1-9 grading system, and I was really hoping that I could get a 9 in computing (I did in the mock).
What I got? Well. I got 138/160 marks total. What did I need to get a 9? 140/160 marks. 2 marks off of the best grade. 2. I was so damn close.5 -
Worst interview ever happened a couple of years ago.
Both me and the company were certain we were a match. The only problem was the physical distance. I live in another city, and is quite stuck because of family matters.
They turned me down because they didn't want me commuting for four hours a day, nor did they believe working while commuting would be a good solution.
So close, yet so far away.6 -
Yet so far away! I didn't realize that 25% of the way to a goal was "So close". Math was not this developer's strength I suppose.
Tomorrow, I'll tell my product manager I'm "so close" to completing our latest Epic.3 -
If you could remember that I'm not your staff anymore and stop assigning me to projects. That'd be fucking swell.

It was making me anxious that I was the only one doing a PhD among my close friends. I actually was feeling like I'm not good enough for it, because those around me didn't feel like they're good enough for it. (ridiculous, I know. But it is what it is)
And then, one of my bestfriends went for her PhD. Her situation is complicated, so she actually didn't have much of a choice. But now I am motivated and feel like I might actually be able to do it. 🙂 Mainly because now I can at least ask someone close when I have stupid questions. 😁
It is starting to feel like less of an strange idea, and more like proper work. 😁1 -
I want to switch over to Linux again, Windows just annoys me a lot lately. Thing is, I don't know what distro I wanna use yet.
I want one that is:
0. Security focused, so encryption, VPN and so on. (I know software could do the job, but would be nice if it comes with the OS)
1. Not hard to configure, but I should be able to configure it more when I want to.
2. Not too ulgy looking.
I have a little bit of experience with Linux, but I'm not even close a professional.
Looking forward to your suggestions!11 -
A backdoor means an open port so...
If anybody in including the admin checks the open port he will definitely notify the port and probably will close that port so...
Maintaining access means nothing?8 -
You know what I hate? The periods close to a new release. It's that annoying time that managers start heaving impatiently to developers: "Push out new hotfixes! Push out new hotfixes!". Fuck you, man. Don't stress a developer. Kthx. If you think developing is so easy, come do it yourself, you IT-ignorant buffoon.1

Someone managed to install a virus on my class' computer. It's called amazon assistant or something like that and it keeps in opening a blank window called aa.hta as soon as you close it it opens again. It didn't change any file so idk, the only assumption i can make is that it mines cryptocurrency. But whatever is fun watching my teachers trying to close it.3

Management wanted all features finished by close of business yesterday to start testing before a demo next week.
I started work at 8am to get my task out of the way early. Unfortunately there was another persons task that mine was dependant on. I kept telling people it needed to be merged so i could integrate it with my changes.
It was merged at 5pm.
I was still fixing merge conflicts at 8pm. 😑1 -

Didn't know what this was, dad caught it this morning in the backyard... Apparently for the first time.
Been watching Pokemon Journeys lately so my first thought was "you caught a new Pokemon" and also "can you name that Pokemon?"
You take a guess here but I did a Google reverse image search and it got it 100%, even with the cage. So I was like wow...
I've used it rarely for other pictures before and my memory says it never came close.
Or maybe that's what all those captchas have been used for.... Though usually they are all for cars, roads and traffic lights....14 -
My space key is not coming back once i clicked . Served like 10 years. It deserve better end than this. damn it guys we lost him. He was so close to retirement. Just this morning he said to me " I am too tired of this board". Its fairwell brother.13

Just wanted to get back to my last rant on here: https://devrant.com/rants/1617720/...

I tried several tools for imports sorting, but none outputs it in a way tslint expects it to be. 😒
God damn it, I have to sort it all manually. 😩2 -
So, I was using YT on my phone now since I'm at my family over the holidays. So far so good.
I just noticed, that google apparently cant even make apps good. FFS, I'm playing a YT vid (fullscreen, landscape) and then close fullscreen.
Guess how it looks now:
a) landscape mode
b) portrait mode
c) locked portrait mode until you go back to the fuckin homescreen where it rotates again
WTF YT5 -
My dad understands what I do (or maybe he thinks he understands, but close enough). My sister just thinks I'm tech support, and any Word or Netflix related problems go to me, even though I've never used modern Word, and I can't stand Netflix. My dad's fairly competent with computers, so I don't get many questions from him, other than the occasional "how do I do this probably impossible but actually kind of clever thing?"

I'm so used to watching all websites with the dev tools open, that when I finally close it, they all look skewed to the right and not centeret.
Oh well, that's just a part of the game I guess -
Goals for 2022:
- Keep studying my new book (concrete mathematics)
- keep solving hacker rank problems
- Interview at amazon.com again (I was so close to get it) and feel the pleasure of reject them
- Stop skipping gym days
- Making friends in NY4 -
content creators these days really know how to get their audience to piss off.
was reading a certain comic artist and on e v e r y page (a page is like 5 strips) sometime midscroll the infamous email subscription dialog appeared and covered half the screen. ofc with a sliding effect so you can't even close it immediatly.
Tried entering a BS adress - still appeared again
why can't more comic sites be like xkcd's or swordscomic?1 -
I almost made it an entire day without being drug into some arbitrary meeting. Then I got drug into one about a project that's been on the back burner for three years that I'm not going to have any say in. Almost had it. So close.4

That feeling when you insert the driver disk for a wireless adapter to find they actually do provide Linux drivers!!!!!
Nobody ever provides Linux drivers, this is a god send! Thank you!
That feeling when they don't compile correctly! Damn you! ASUS pls. Halp. You're so close to being amazing. -
Best: Getting really close to my team and having good times with them as well as having a client love their website so much they sent me gifts and a really nice note.
Worst: Rude client who treated me like shit, made my job 103837xs harder and made me want to cry, scream and not want to come in to work ever again.1 -
So, A very close friend of mine is a fellow computer science student. But she has no interest in coding. Mostly because she never tried it. Is there any post or video that can help her find a motivation.
I know that interest comes from within, but set that aside for a while and help me out with something that inspired you.13 -
Work day 3 of 2023… gawrram I’m bored. Another day of IaC. Unfortunately the issues I’ve dealt with today are sequential from the QA point of view. And our QA is slow us fuck today. So a lot of waiting around for me today. I’m one fucking issue away from the Great Infrastructure Update. So close, yet so far, knowing how slow our QA process is…
So here I’m sitting around in my office away from office pondering what the hell I should do with all this time…2 -
Can anyone explain why the Assign Issue and Resolve Issue dialogs in JIRA are modal, so that I can't look at the issue I am assigning/resolving while writing my comment and filling out all the other mandatory fields?
And if you close and reopen the dialog, all your changes are lost. Second tab it is...1 -
So today I did the weirdest use of REST API I have ever seen. Was working on a little electron app for a friend using angular as frontend. I didn't want to use the standard title bar so created one for me in angular. But to hookup the close button with actual termination would have required more effort than my lazy ass was going to put. So I just created extra route to use browserwindow.close() function. And it actually worked good.1
-
A few days ago I took some time off at short notice to help someone close to me with their medical condition.
On the same day the CEO of the company made a request that only I could've fulfilled out of 12 devs so yesterday I was reprimanded for it.
Why don't companies do something to actively increase the bus factor on projects? -
so close yet so far :(
anyone got any tips for how to remove unused css? is there any tool that can remove classes from bootstrap i don't use?12 -
Just noticed that my watercooling Pump stopped working a month or so ago...
It seems that after i installed my Soundcard the molox Connection was broken or didn't get enough juice anymore....
Connnected a new molex cable to the powersupply and everything is fine again.😌
How the f did my ryzen CPU survive this?!?
Just noticed because rising noise from the fans and Bubbles in the CPU Block.😑
Holy f that was close....😳1 -
I figured out a workaround the coronavirus shit and to protect myself in public.
Instead of wearing medical masks (like all the sheep out there), I am gonna be wearing a gangsta-style bandanna.
It covers face and mouth. BUT most importantly it will scare people away and no one would get close so i will be practicing social distancing everywhere I go using nothing but the power of fear and stereotypes.6 -
So one of our NSP develops a nice app that allows you to create custom data plans and buy data at low price
But danm....I hate how they designed it
The update pop up doesn't close
Even when yu close reopen the app the danm thing keeps on pop up
Only option is to update -
Summer is getting close, so you see highly stilished people running around taking pictures of themselves.
Are they wannabe influencers or applying to work at a high class escort service?5 -
Applying for internships is stressful. So many things to account for, even more stressful a situation is to try and find a paid internship close enough to bus.
But it's required for the course. So guess I'm applying for more when I get home and hoping for the best3 -
I'm the first to come into office, so i always update a file the entire staff uses. i opened it up today and it was open in another computer. fuckin hell, you guys could at least do the bare minimum and close that shit7
-
Currently work at frontier. Two job offers one at keystone the other at dk cannot decide so ran it through decision craft and the results are so close. How you normally pick which job to take. Any methods welcomed to be discussed.4
-
So I'm currently working in outsourcing for a Dutch company. On the 24th several companies close for holiday and my company (so the one that hired me!) makes their employees to go to the office when their outsourcing client closes.
This really grinds my gears (family guy reference anyone? 😂). What's the F word difference of bundling dozens of devs for a day without nothing to do instead of letting them be in their homes??
PS: I'm home that day but I was forced to take a day off...
Cheers and happy holidays to all 🎅2 -
Just spent 3 hours on a bs problem
I just start acceptance testing a node.js api.
I'm using frisby
I have logged the export method return data and it is correct
I am loading it into the set header function as the accept-type
On frisby side I run the test and it spits out that there is no accept-type
I really don't get why anymore. Came so close to a blind fury. -
So close to closing out this ticket only to be told “we have to start again cause of red tape”
Just end me. -
I was so close to switching to windows until this automated update just prevented me from working all morning....1
-
It's been already for some weeks that I feel some pain in my tendons close to the elbows and also in the hands and wrists. A friend of mine that is doctor says I should get a better keyboard and change my sitting position.
So here I am, asking for some suggestions for keyboards. Mechanical ones are maybe too noisy for the office, perhaps one with the red switches could work. Any options that are not much more than 70€?3 -
To not get fired. I'm a student at the best high school in my country, so it's really unusual that I work besides school. I want to prove that it's not only possible but beneficial. I already learned a lot, but if I won't get fired, I'll be close to senior level by the time I start working full-time, which will help a lot with university.1
-
I just moved into a new house that I share with some people and these people have a cat. I was quietly watching videos when the cat decided she wanted to be petted, so, logically, she stepped into my keyboard and trackpad and somehow managed to mute the video, restart it and exit full screen.
I must remember to close the door when I'm doing anything important.1 -
I'm so sick and tired of the human dick head parade. Epic has us register for a fucking GitHub organization and people found a way to abuse the pull request and sending 300,000 close to 400,000 people notifications so now we're dealing with spam that's going out with random shit including someone ripping their ass hole open (picture...). Over 200 emails I swear to god. This is why castration should be legal.
Unsubscribed from one, someone creates a new useless PR.4 -
Ok so I had to make a revision on a PDF with JS that was being tested to fix some bugs, I hadn't touched it or Acrobat Reader for more than a month I think but I could work on it well back then.
I had to see the problem first so when I go and open it with Adobe Reader, it crashes. Weird. I can't get it to work.
Well I'm reinstalling it then.
After downloading the (now correct, I tried to use an old one I had and lost some time) installer, I tried to install it and it asked me to close Outlook and Excel. Weirder.
I do, and after finishing it said "you have a newer version, open it?". Super weird. Of course when I accepted it didn't work.
I uninstall my current installation and while uninstalling it asks me to close Chrome. Ok now I'm not ok with this shit.
Adobe wtf?
I needed to fix it in some minutes and it ended up taking hours.4 -
FUCKING CLOUDWATCH
I'm so close to a mental breakdown.
If I had a penny for every second wasted by its loading spinner, I could already sip cocktails on my own yacht.4 -
Do you ever think about the fact that computer science is based on binary operations not because it is.easier or because we are "so smart" but because our still primitive knowledge of physics did not allow us to find a material and build reliable gates with multiple states and so we are.stuck with the "open-close" thingy?
Is it me or does it look like we are not that smart?6 -
That moment your professor tasks you with writing a genetic algorithm and are forced to use MatLab (which I don't use).
"The University offers MatLab through ssh, so no problems, right?" Only basic package installed...
As cherry on the pie I found out that it's nowhere close to intuitive for me.
Got the feeling I could've done it way faster in the programs I'm used to, but finally got it working! -
Wash your hands longer, use desinfactant, don't get too close to each other and dab when sneezing. So not really any thing. It is already expectet of you that you go do home office when your sick.
-
Stack overflow people are all so fucking annoying, but every now and again you get a rare gem that ACTUALLY helps you, and doesn't just close your question for no reason or downvote without an answer. Like, I'm sorry I didn't spend my entire like learning computer science, I just have some questions!2

@dfox Bug report:
Pressing the close button on a post you create does save the post details, but tags are lost. So you aren't able to post the next rant you have, with all the tags prepared.4 -
7 months into first job and half my department (so essentially about 10 people) have left. Kinda sucks emotionally especially when you try befriend those people or get close to them like your manager. Genuinely never felt this lost and without guidance as when my manager left...5
-
If you had a billion dollars tomorrow, would you attempt to buy your current company, just so you could fire everyone, close all the offices and burnt it all to the ground?2
-
So glad I decided to use Spring Boot... Love it's bean configuration for dependency injections... Also love the RowMapper interface that's used with the JdbcTemplate. No more redundant Exception handling over and over again and I can still get close to the metal with writing my own queries. DOPE.
-
When you are super busy and trying to get things done, you feel like your iTerm is a bit weird so you decide to detach your tmux and close your iTerm.
Then, open iTerm, auto attach tmux, "loss tmux server", "Restoring..."
OK, time to head home. -
I'm very new to the business world, this is my first freelance project, a website with articles, editable profile pages and a calendar. I can't say no to the customer so the scope grew a bit too fat. I'm moving to England and starting university next week, and the project is going to be transferred to some guy, supposedly for maintenance, but it's not even close to complete. I feel like shit for failing them and especially I feel bad for the poor guy after me.2

So I gots me an Android app I'm writing in Ionic Angular
Cleartext is disabled by default these days. However I need to make requests from the app to ESP 32's running in the same network. They will always be running in the same network.
Setting cleartext = true in the manifest hasn't worked.
"whitelisting" the ip hasn't worked
It works when usb debugging and keeps working after I unplug the cable but won't work if I close and then reopen the app3 -
Where I work I'm close to the receptionist's desk so it means a phone ringing in my head all day.
I usually stay back later just so that I can work when it's quiet. You, other employee, have no soul if you caused a printer jam a full two hours after official quitting time and are now trawling IT for a support tech. -
Ok so this is more like a question than a rant
Have you ever gotten to close to your boss and how did it turn out for you?
Currently im as close as you can get without marrying her but we have trouble separating work from our private life...
Any advice or stories that you can share would be much appreciated1 -
Ugh, fuck the SSRS web service. Spent all week trying to consume the service with PowerShell, doesn't make it any easier when there are undocumented behaviours. TypeName property has to be Type, for instance, when creating a search condition, TOTALLY contrary to the documentation.
Want to change the data source for a report you uploaded? Gl;hf! Back to it next week, think I'm close to having a working deployment script...so close. -
Hm... Looks like they caught me cheating online and reset my game save to like a month ago...
So basically I wasted 2wks... for nothing...
I was so close to making an in game purchase this morning.... Good thing I didn't.
And now back to doing more productive things with my time...18 -
So, I acquired Pluralsight code for 3 months subscription from Visual Studio Dev Essentials. It's time to close myself in basement and run Node & Angular paths 😂
-
Such a hard year. So many personal trials and tribulations. Only good part, the boyfriend is super supportive(and damn sexy) but Lord knows I am very close to a break down. Dangerously close.13
-
So Google create inbox, a pretty good email client with nice interface and features, it works really well and has people using it. Why the fuck they decide to close a working thing? Gmail is a big piece of shit, the interface is awful, can't group mails correctly and lacks a lot of inbox functions.
They can't at least give you an inbox-like Gmail view?4 -
Friday morning's meeting:
CTO: Ok guys, deadline is next Friday so today we close the last big issues and next week no more new features, only bug fixing.
Monday morning's meeting:
Business: So here is the new mock-up for the search feature (basically they changed the whole behavior).
😐1 -
Got a job test today and I’m already almost done.
All that’s left are two features and I don’t know how to do them and I just wanna cry and all my momentum has gone to waste4 -
"We are flexible with the arrivals, always when you accomplish your hours".
Missing detail: they don't open even 15 min early or close 15 min late. So how the fuck is that flexible?3 -
So India launched this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/... last week.
It tracks your location and let you know if you have come in close proximity with someone who has been tested COVID-19 positive.
I don't wanna debate about the privacy concerns as India doesn't really get these things.
As for the moment, I will happily trade my location data for my life.5 -
"asked 7 mins ago", "closed 4 mins ago" + "Update the question so it's on-topic for Stack Overflow." - edit, but hurry up before we close! This must be Stackoverflow's new welcoming culture then? (not my question, but somebody else's, closed for not being on topic, but could have happened to me as it did several times in the past)11
-
Not really a rant, but I quit the job I hated for one that pays more and will also give me a set schedule so that I can actually get some coding done for once! (Last job had me on random open or close shifts and that shit fucks with your head after a while) I'm so stoked. Looks like I might finish my projects before Christmas after all, whooo!
-
So... the usual has happened and I've already got a wontfix this month. OTF PS3 FTP plugin "only supports passive mode, not active mode", will accept 500MB of uploaded data then close the port on passive mode. Active mode "is not supported" amd "doesn't accept connections" and passive mode "cannot possibly fail because it's better" and "must have been corrupted before being installed on my PS3."
Guess which mode works flawlessly?1 -
When you deliver a site to a customer and find out that you forgot to prepare all the statements so that the website wouldn't be vulnerable to SQL injections. So yesterday I forgot to add that, had to close down all the connections to the website and rewrite all the statements. Everything is good now
-
One of those annoying moments: when you close the tab accidentally because you pressed ctrl+w in the current tab, but the active window was the other browser in your second monitor so instead you closed the wrong one... 😑... luckily there's "open last closed tab".. but still is annoying3
-
Wanna develop android apps, i am a .Net developer and i know xamarin sucks a$$. So was wondering about kotlin but i wonder how close it is to c#. Any ideas on android development for a dotnet developer?9
-
Nice that devRant looks better on the iPhone X now, but I think there should be some padding at the bottom, so that stuff doesn’t get too close to the home bar thingy7
-
Is there a good way to refresh user permissions in an ASP.MVC app? Right now our solution is to save the updates and have the user close out of their browser/clear the cache so the updates can take place but wonder if there's a way to refresh the application itself.1
-
Just know. Kill a Linux process could so emotional. Like a person tell all you close people that you gonna die, after that "the Manager" maybe uninterested you at all.2
-
Don't you just fucking love it when you ask a question or report an issue on gitHub, and they back-handedly slap you with a "that's a coding question, do it on SO", and wham they close the issue.
how fucking anal and lazy would you have to be?1 -
I am so close to done on my first solo app I've worked on for 6 months that could beat down similar corporate apps. Friends and family are proud, but don't really know what I mean. Just happy.
-
So I have a huge family, and a core group of close friends, but I'm the only semi-tech-literate individual I know. The closest I have is a relative that uses a drag and drop interface to control some "internet of things" style systems in his 9 to 5. DevRant is great, and reddit can be, any place/platform/bar/dogpark you all use to meet other devs/engineers/algorithm junkies? For context, I'm a remote dev for a small team, purty much solo...
-
ok this is fucking ridiculous.
i had devrant open and my screen went to sleep mode. i tried to unlock my phone and my whole phone froze because devrant froze. i couldnt unlock to my main screen everything was blank. this happened multiple times by now and every time i had to wait like 5-10 fucking minutes for devrant to crash so i can force close it and use my phone. this time i had to restart my goddamn phone so it can unfreeze.3 -
//not a rant, just a question
Yeah I know SO is the place to ask such stuff, but I still wanna ask it here.
I have started with OpenCV for image processing. The sad thing is it is available for python only. Is there a PHP alternative? The best I have found is ImageMagick which doesn't come close to OpenCV. -
I am doing some late night developing because I feel excited about my own project after a long slog of refactoring and ground work... and my IDE is getting weird leading to long compilation times :(
Dear World. I am doing my life-chores so please let me get my shit done for once!
I was this close to fall asleep content tonight... -
Every day my company reminds us that we must be a team. My coworker is near to degree in software eng, but have some difficults. This person made many mistakes in the past, but it's still with us. He need an help, but everyone is too busy!!!
Fuck you motherfuckers!!! I help him and after graduation, "I'll slap on the face"! But now, I cannot leave him alone. When is so close to graduation...
BASTARDS MOTHERFUCKERS! -
Soon even more reason for that friendly high-rep SO user to close your question as a dupe :-)

Can anyone explain me why everyone is using vim and i feel to dumb to use it, because I did not know how to close it so I am using nano?6
-
I don't think money should be the drive for anything. Money is the medium that we use to fuel our ongoing contributions to society. So why close your source?2
-
I just finished typing a config file and ran into a problem with being able to save the file. I highlight the lines in vi yank them close vi re run it as sudo to see if that would resolve the issue with being unable to save read "E353: Nothing in register". Remember yank doesn't function like copy-paste on windows so it doesn't save to clip board.
Well there goes 20 minutes of work! -
I wonder who has the idea of showing the opposite of the parenthesis. Like when I move my terminal cursor to the open parenthesis of a pair, it will show the end (the close paren) of that pair. It makes me confused so many times.3
