Phone call...
Caller: we contact you to arrange an interview for Java developer position, what time is good with you?
Me: Sorry Sir, I am javascript developer not Java developer!
Caller: You mentioned in your CV that you are using Java and Ayax for building applications!
Me: Trust me Sir, I don't have any relationship with your Ayax...
Caller: No problem, we can discuss this small technical difference in the interview. When you are available for it?
Me: No Sir, I am not available.7 -
Me to wordpress "developer"
- No, you are not a developer, you just drag and drop shit in visual composer
That felt good3 -

Developer: Can you upgrade my machine to Windows 10? I need it for SQL server 2019.
IT Guy: Sure.
Some time later...
IT Guy: Good news, Windows 10 is loaded. Bad news, I need to update TPM to enable Bitlocker but the firewall is blocking me from downloading the update. I will need to download it from home tonight.
Developer: But you're the IT administrator...
IT Guy: Yes...

Friend: So you are not really a good developer then?

I am a backend web/android developer for quite some time now and have a good experience in this field and Yesterday, I lost several hours to the following typo: "127.0.01”5

Watching a cookery program and it made me think it must be hard being a chef.
Then it made me think that being a web developer is a bit like cooking.
You have your ready meal equivalent with WordPress and Wix.
You have your cook at home kits with front-end frameworks like bootstrap and foundation.
You have your recipes and ingredients with package managers like npm and JavaScript modules.
Then you have your own home made cooking using vanilla js, CSS and HTML made to your own liking.
Just like being a good chef, being a good web developer is about knowing what ingredients and methods to include, but also what to leave out, to get the best result!5 -
Designer (to the client): Yes it'll be exactly like this mock up after I hand it over to the iOS developer.
Client: Awesome! Looking forward to it.
* Designer goes to developer *
Designer (to developer): Hey these are the new designs for the app, let me know if you have any questions, ok?
Developer: Cool.
* 1 minute later *
* developer goes to designer *
Developer (to designer): How should error messages or notifications look like?
Designer: Oh we should just email those because it won't look good.
Developer: The fuck? And are you going to design this email service too?2 -

Getting older. I've been needlessly worried about my age as a developer since I was 23, which is hilarious.
People always need good devs. You don't have to become a manager or commit suicide at 30. Just be awesome and someone will pay you.5 -

Impostor Syndrome at it's finest.
Any experienced developer knows writing good programs has very little to do with syntax and a whole lot to do with where you put it. If this guy actually did any work over his career he probably knows a ton about application architecture and design patterns without even realizing it.

Whichever developer thought "hey I know what would be a good idea... Instead of reading an article on one page, let's have a slideshow..." should just die.
Man I fucking hate those slideshow websites that want you to click through twenty slides to read something.5 -
Just met my old friend a few minutes ago and he asked me, "what work you do?"
Me > Well you already know, I'm a developer.
He > Oh, so you make mobile apps and websites?
Me > Well kinda yea but I work on websites mostly, will build my mobile app later someday.
He > Yea, you have something called web2,web3 and RSS FEED and you know anyone can do coding and developer stuff, only hard thing is to get a good idea.

Week 66 has taught me that I must actually be quite privileged!
I can't recall any bad advice given to me. It's either been good, or I completely forgot about it.
Or on the other hand, it's all been bad advice and I'm a rubbish developer...3 -
You are a consultant and wrote some easy scripts by copying code snippets together?
Good for you!
It makes your job easier?
Good for you!
You didn't care too much about UI because you only needed the job to be done?
That's fine!
BUT DON'T YOU DARE SELL THIS SHIT TO A CUSTOMER AND CALL YOURSELF A SOFTWARE DEVELOPER!
YOU ARE NO DEVELOPER!
YOU DON'T KNOW NOTHING ABOUT HOW TO BUILD A RELIABLE SOFTWARE.
no one needs a solid database structure?
Object oriented programming is "just another hype"?
No one cares for the coding?
FUCK YOU, AND YOUR ATTITUDE!7 -
Once one of my coworkers tried to prank me while i was afk and changed a line in my code.
Good old habits of mine instantly realized the file's unsaved status and i could ctrl+z without even knowing someone edited my code.

The worst part about being a web developer is when clients ruin a perfectly good website by asking for dumb things, even though you told them it's either:
a) near impossible
b) not useful/helpful to users
c) deprecated/no longer used code/techniques
e) will harm performance and SEO
d) just plain stupid8 -
Being a backed developer is like being a spy. You are only known by your failures. You will never get to know a good backed developer or a good spy.2

Me (as a Senior developer): How will you solve this problem using regular expression?
Junior developer: *Explains*
Me: Good
Junior developer: I truly feel like a programmer when I code regular expressions

"Hi, our client is looking for a dot net developer, and we think you'll be a good fit."

Laravel & phalcon is .net.. Aaallrighty then.6 -
I just thought this would be a good place to find beta testers. Mainly because the developer is prone to get bored and if they encounter a bug they will be a lot more helpful than "its not working"

Ah finally, the moment when being a web developer is full of joy.
☑️ Server-side rendering
☑️ Inline critical css
☑️ Add progressive image loading
☑️ Minify everything
☑️ Automate release process in CI
☑️ Lint everything
Now that the strucutre is up, time to code the actual website. This is gonna be good!8 -

Worst part of being a developer?
Everyone thinks you want to freelance a website for them...
Even when you're not a web developer
What do you do?
I write software.
Oh so you're good with computers and stuff?
Yeah
That's p sweet, can you build me a site?
No. 😃3 -
Hello everyone, this is my rant.
I work in a start-up as an Android developer and we were looking for our first iOS developer.
After two months searching, some guy was finally hired last week.
My boss already told me he didn't have my programming level, but we needed him because he had experience as community manager and good Photoshop skills, and right now we need a profile like that in our company.
Today the new guy asked me what are setters and getters.
How fucked is my company? Is there hope for us?9 -
Hello! I am a hobbyist game Developer.
I recently made a game for Android and I would really appreciate it if you downloaded it! I am open to your critique at what's good and what's not! Anything that you think would make the game better?

Being a good developer is knowing how to balance writing perfect code with getting shit done. Working lean means half your stuff in going to die anyway, so fighting for the corpse just wastes everybody's time5
-
An interest at a young age, countless hours exploring, college, University, portfolio, junior job, promotions, finally you're senior developer - over a decade of hard work paid off...
"You're good with computers, can you fix my toaster?"
💥😳🔫4 -
You hired me to be a JavaScript developer. Just because you have stock inMicrosoft is not a good reason to try stuffing Typescript down my throat. Maybe you should have hired a Typescript developer!6

Remember that time I taught a "senior" full stack developer what the HTTP PATCH verb was, DURING an interview?
Didn't get the job.
Yeah. Those were good times.2 -
I was MEAN developer and moved to MERN developer.

We just got an intern in our company a few days ago. She is supposed to be a php developer, not good, but at least something okay. I find major errors, that even a newbie should regocnize.

Q: I'm [xx] years old [xyz] professional. Would that be a good idea if I try to change my career to software development right now?
A: Age is mostly doesn't matter. You can learn programming at any age. And, software is everywhere. Every background knowledge will be useful. Your prior knowledge will not be wasted.
But, should you change career?
- YES, if you deeply interested in programming.
- NO, if it's only because you feel there are better opportunities.
It's true that there may be better opportunities. But, without deep interest in the subject, you may struggle to become good software developer. Without being a good developer, your opportunities will be limited and you are likely to regret the decision.
Software development is easier for those who passionate but very difficult for those who doesn't....4 -
[ ] be humble, but not unconfident.
[ ] Step out of your comfort zone. Don't apply to a job that is exactly like your last one.
[ ] A good team is the most important thing for a developer. Intelligent, and nice people to work with and to learn from is more important than the salary difference between jobs.
Try to 'feel' for a good team. Ask to be introduced or to look around when you finish the interview.2 -
So I finished uni three weeks ago. Interview for a my first junior web developer position a week ago.
Received news yesterday that I got the job. It’s been a good couple weeks I’d say.3 -
Accurate representation of my Hell desk job. Good news I have a interview today for a software developer position. w00t!8

I just realize that companies dont value a good developer, they just want a developer that can do the job done for clients to get money, i understand that just recently and im sad that some people are just in it for the money not for the love of the craft and technology.8

I met a senior node.js developer for the first time and had a talk with him, really, I did not know how junior I was until I talked with him, everything he told me about node was just amazing, I mean, I describe myself as a good developer but he has the knowledge I would like to have someday, I loved node since I met the runtime and I follow many node/js programmers that are really good at it and I admire them, but having the opportunity to have an hour and something talk with one of them was really amazing and gave me more reasons to succeed and how to take that place, well I have to say this as per what I've already write -> nohomo5 -
Why management people thinks that a career path for any senior developer is to be a "leader" and be good in business side. Its like saying "hey you are a good programmer, let me take away that work you love to do and do stupid human resource management instead"5
-
That moment when you as a junior developer is trying to write good, maintainable code and a more senior developer stops by and says "It's too late to start adding good code. I'll help you quick fix it".

My work is LITERALLY cock blocking me.
My wife and I scheduled a lunch 'date' at 12:30. At 12:10, I foolishly thought "Eh I'll check in my changes, I'm 95% sure everything will be fine". Wouldn't you know it, after compiling for 7 minutes, the build server throws an error complaining about package compatibility, which locally is just a warning. Now I have to babysit the good damn build.
I seriously thought about bolting and just dealing with it after lunch, but I'm a good little developer.3 -
What manager says: You should support IE because a very large portion of our userbase is already there and they somewhat comply with web standards so it shouldn't be that hard. Also most good sites support IE so we should support it too.
What web developer hears: blah blah blah SUPPORT IE blah blah blah SUPPORT IE9 -
"A good software developer writes good code. Better software developer deletes bad code."
Me, after using Generic types in some source code and deleting 250 lines effectively.6 -
In ESnext, private properties are marked with `#`.
Who thought that was a good idea? No really, who thought that was a good idea?
Why not just -- I don't know -- introduce keywords like ... let me think ... public, protected and private!?
Why this:
class MyClass {
a = 1; // .a is public
#b = 2; // .#b is private
static #c = 3;// .#c is private and static
incB() {
this.#b++;
}
}
If this becomes part of the language, no JavaScript developer may joke about php usage of `$` anymore.32 -
Joined a company as a junior developer and have been working there for almost 4 years.
Too scared to leave because I don't know if I'm good enough to apply for a non junior role :(
Is this the so called "imposter syndrome?"10 -
A friend of mine who just started work as an Applications Developer. One of his duties is to I quote "Create and maintain inventory, which may include hardware, software and various items such as toners and peripheral equipment"

I recently found a job at a call center for a local Japanese food joint, and I will finally get enough money for a paid Apple Developer certificate, and now I will be able to publish the app on TestFlight, have proper notification services, etc! I will update you on the situation.7 -
I am good as Front End developer, using JavaScript I can do the job, the whole job. Developing, Styling, designing and deploying the web applications is my daily job for few years now...
Today I quit my job for a new position as Back End developer using a new programming language I totally know nothing about it!!!
I am not sure about my decision... but I would like to take the risk....2 -

*in Sprint planning listening to my PM creating tasks*
PM (to Team): So this will be an MVP we can expand on in the future. Do let me know upfront if any tasks should not be in the Sprint.
Team Manager (to PM): Let's see... Yeah I think you've nailed it... Good.
Developer (to Team): Guys, I see the task for the frontend team to integrate machine learning doesn't have any details.
PM (to Developer): Ooh machine learning! Good catch!
PM (to Team Manager): This was one of the tasks we really needed this quarter, will we still be on track?
Team Manager (to PM): Yeah no worries we'll add it as part of the MVP design in Confluence.
PM: Okay assigning the task now. *Assigns to Developer*
*Team Manager goes on 1 month vacation*

A programmer can code.
A developer is a jack of all trades jumping into any stack and mastering the basics in a weekend.
So why the fuck can't I grasp humans. Their code is spaghetti....
Debugging gives way to many problems...
Atleast my personal code has a feature creep and for once it's a good thing!3 -

The worst thing I've seen a developer do would be becoming a university teacher while not being able to understand simple OOP or good programming practices.
I can't think of a most harmful one, just mediocrity cultivating unknowingly mediocre devs.2 -
Even though I bragging about how good my few projects are to the people I talk to them about, I undervalue my worth as a developer.
Even though I am desperate for money, I've only recently started trying to get work in the dev community (with little success) because I actually feel that I'm not a good enough developer..17 -
My first rant! let's see what is about!
Greetings from Venezuela, the oil and corruption country of South America...
Is it possible to become a good software developer just being constant, every day trying, even when you don't know what you're doing but, keep it up till you accomplish a goal? Or is anything more needed to succeed? I mean I'm trying to make my first desktop app and sometimes I feel like fck! I'm leaving this... I'm trying to dominate the software development process to get better a better job, in here or out there... But geez its hard...
Well, I want to believe that maybe someday I will become a good software developer...
First rant without thinking too much...10 -

No matter how many stackOverflow threads you study or how many resources you have, experience is really what makes a very good developer3

I think i finally have a good shot at finally becoming an employed web developer. Keeping my fingers crossed2

I'm kinda insecure about my main focus being web stuff. I'm pretty good at it and it comes naturally - and more importantly, there are tons of web jobs. But I've always wanted to do something more unique and interesting, you know? I don't wanna introduce myself as web developer.3

4 years ago I made a personal goal/plan to be a full stack developer. Meaning a good understanding of any development between os level code and web/front end user experience.
Over the years this term 'full stack' has been abused greatly and now basically means 'a javascript developer that generally knows what they are talking about'.
So now, devRant collective I ask you. What do you call a developer with good skills in:
- os level code (c, c++ and os apis)
- database level tech (advanced querying and db aglo/modeling)
- software architecture
- application level (workflow and business logic)
- transport level (protocol design and usage)
- front end tech (graphics programming and event driven paradigm)
- user experience14 -

Frontend-Developer steps into my office and tells me that my code does not work and that he has checked everything.
>me confused, cause I did it every time so<
So I spent one hour to check and recompile my code again and again. I created more console outputs than my whole last week... And at the end... It was not my fault, I had to find out that the front- and backcolor of his label are the same so the text was not visible.
Dear frontend developer,
I love your designs and most of the time you make a really good job, but please check something like this before you confuse a backend developer for one hour and let him doubt about himself...
Thanks!
Sincerely,
Your backend dev3 -
I have met a game developer today who genuinely browse the internet using MS Edge by choice.
His reason: sine I was little I loved Microsoft, I accept the fact that some websites don't show properly on Microsoft's browser, by using their browser I keep reminding myself that loyalty to what I love is more important than practicality.
My response to him: bbut... As long as you're happy!
As a web developer I feel that myself and other web devs have the responsibility to kick Microsoft in the butt to make their browser good enough for loyal people like that guy!14 -
So I did make a few website, they kinda worked well, but they really were ugly as fuck in terms of UI and UX.
So everytime a company was asking "have you got any website to show"
"NO, ABSOLUTELY FUCKING NOT, BUT YOU CAN TRUST ME I'M A REALLY GOOD DEVELOPER"5 -
If you ++ this post, you will get good developer karma credits for the next 10 years, and every piece of code you write will eventually work.
Trust me this actually works, you can try it yourself.2 -
- UI Developer Interview

- Says pretty good at CSS
- Have not heard of box model.
FUCK INTERVIEWS. FUCK EXPERIENCE. FUCK EVERYTHING.2 -
Just met a startup that has a programmer intern but no IT supervisor. I felt so sorry for her that I decided to show her a few cool tools that she can use in her work.
She was still using Xampp, Google Chrome, command prompt and paper trails (for all of the passwords she had to manage to different accounts)
Shown her how to use Docker, Git Bash and WSL, FireFox Developer Edition, VS Code (if she decides to not use that unregistered Sublime Text editor) and LastPass (personal preference).
Best of luck!2 -
I thought I was never going to be anything in life because there was nothing that I was good at. Then I started "web school" and it just clicked. I was good at it and I understood it. Finished with an A :) now I love my job as a front-end developer.1

We were discussing if table names should be singular or plural.
As a good developer, I had to check stackoverflow.

I feel like there should be "dev recruiter" position that people with developer skills could fill. Every time I go to an interview, I just know the person asking me dev related stuff has no fucking clue about anything I'm saying, it's printed all over their faces.
A good developer almost instantly knows if you know your craft or not.
Let's not keep wasting everyone's time -
Sitting super hot and extremely loud marketing girls next to your entire developer staff is a good way to decrease productivity. not to mention how extremely annoying they can be at times. ugh!!4

Had my first official coding interview for a "real" developer position! Really is a different experience. So much to do and so little time.
Overall I feel like it went well. Hope I get some good news soon 🤞 -
A friend of mine and I are about to open a company and we're hiring a developer to develop websites, no specific needs, it literally just have to work.
We found this guy, who develops goodlooking websites, but isn't really a developer, meaning that he just uses visual composers. (which doesn't differ too much from what we want).
Well this guy kinda loves us because we're actual developers who know how to code "properly".
It's the first time someone likes me just bc I'm a developer and I'm already superhappy!
Hope it will get good soon enough! -
One of the colleagues I am close with is changing teams. They will still be around the company, in fact the office of the team they are going to is right by mine. It just sucks to lose a good developer and friend from the team.

Guys, I had my first REAL developer interview today. Without jinxing myself, I'd like to say it went really good. We discussed the companys upcoming projects, what they expect from a new developer, etc. but some thing that bothers me about it is there was never any discussion about my expected compensation. I'm not sure if this is common or not, but we'll see.3 -

I'm a full stack developer: I do Web Development, Backend Development.
Not a graphic designer but I use Photoshop and Illustrator to modify assets that I receive clients.
What is a good budget Mac Laptop that I can hang on for most of my work ?16 -
I became good enough to be hired as a developer by reinventing lots of wheels and making mistakes. A lot of mistakes.2
-
I think it's more important to have right kind of headphones and music than a good editor to improve productivity as a developer5
-
A couple months ago I started working at a company as a student backend developer.
Last week there was an intenship conference at my school in which I got to represent my company, and talk to my classmates about their possible internships. They were amazed to see me on the other side of the table.
Feels good to be able to start a career at an early age in the developer world! -
Goals -
1. Learn frontend and backend development. Move out of "Just android developer" description
2. Move out of this shitty MNC and get a job in a good company
3. Blog more
4. Give talks
5. Get fit
6. Have a nice gf ( one can hope)
Can I achieve this much? I'll try my best for sure. -
I currently have my dream job as a web developer, with a little above average salary, good colleagues and an understanding boss.
Today I had a recruiter contact me with a job opportunity (Senior developer) that would easily net me 1.5 times more salary, and a lot of other advantages.
It almost hurts to say no.4 -
Hey guys, my boyfriend is in the path of becoming a video game developer, do you have ideas of what would be a good gift for him? :)14
-
On today's episode an first ever
"In Your Opinion "
To be a "good " developer, do you have to code (not only for work) but as a hobby as well?6 -
So I heard this story from my boss,
Boss: you applied to the open web developer job?
"Pro": yes i have designed many websites.
Boss: are you good with css?
"Pro": Yes i am really good with adobe Cs(6). -
Get assigned a PR review
Spend half an hour meticulously looking through it
Looks flawless, no errors, compiles, test cases passing, expected results
Approve request
Another developer immediately finds a flaw
Fuck. I think I am totally incapable of making myself look good.4 -
Developer problems:

Yesterday I had a discussion with a freelancing developer
Me: You're already earning good, why are you freelancing?
He: Freelancing is my hobby.
Me: !! Why don't you participate in some open source development? I do.
He: How much do you earn there?
Me: In terms of money? few bucks as donation for 1 coffee in a month.
He: few bucks only !!!
Me: Opensource development can be good for your career. You can get a good job or promotion....
He: I believe in certainty.
Me: Hmmm5 -
Hello NDC! Three days of conference, learning stuff, coffee, motivation, meeting people, coffee, good food, coffee!
I love NDC (Norwegian Developer Conference), it's my ninth time. I just watched Jon Skeet talk about C#8, up next is some Azure stuff. Anybody else here? -
After 5 years as a developer, I am 100% sure the users of Stackoverflow are the real Good Guy Greg2
-
"Hey, this developer does some good work, I think I'll follow them to keep up... Oh, their online presence is consumed in identity politics? Damn."1
-
Has any of you worked with someone claiming he's a "Senior Software Engineer" but he does not know what he's doing? I'm not saying I'm a very good developer myself but I know how to differentiate a good code from a garbage code and architecture. It's really becoming a pain in the ass...5
-
Don't love the environment where an idiot developer, who has perfected his people skills and Visio skills constantly impresses the management with good looking charts, albeit unintelligible, and the management adopts his stupid ideas every time.1
-
More and more of my friends and family are finding out I'm an Android Developer. I'm so sick of hearing, "Hey, I have a great idea for an app...". They all think you can build a good mobile app from scratch in a few days.2
-
Looking through a former developer's drive for their projects folder is kind of like a treasure hunt, only you don't get something good at the end of it usually.
Especially when there's a good reason they're a "former" developer.
Non-standard locations.
Behold, latest deployed code changes are uncommitted.
Alcohol, please save me.2 -
Tell me honestly, Do your feel gender discrimination vibe at your workplace? I've been seeing so much tweets about female developer being insulted/made fun of/ whatever you call discrimination.
For me it's really good to see them writing codes. One of the girl I was friend with on Facebook was really good at solving problems. She gave me some of best ideas. I need an honest answer guys ?24 -
I hate every blog post about "How to be a good developer in ..." or "X steps that will do Y" STFU YOU CUNTS. Everytime the same points over and over again... JUST STFU1
-
Sometimes I want to go against my ethics principle and just use my skills to create a PONZI website or a scam site. I am a full stack developer, I can create one within two months.
However the financial strain I am having, I just want to so good 🤦♂️2 -
Biggest hurdle in my Dev career?
To be as good an architect as the developer I am.
Challenges: You'll have to convince fellow architects, business clients, junior developers, mid level developers. Some understands UML, some only wants POC, some wants to see code, some just wants a PowerPoint deck, and some just wants to see the cost benefits only. -
She - * I am yours for tonight, do whatever you want.*
Developer - * Can you create a good looking brand logo for my client.*
She - Cries in corner.......🤔😂😂😂😂1 -
You cant be a recognzied as a good developer, untill you are a good tester or say produce least bug free code. You should do thorough testing of your code before handing over to QA. I lacked the skill of good unit testing, so have suffered alot in past years.1
-
I'm a self taught android/Java developer, I have never been to any boot camps. But I have worked with someone who been to one.
It is good for developers who already know the concept of programming and want to improve their skills. -
A good project manager between the client and the developer can do miracles to productivity on all ends1
-
Had a university project with friends, got another guy (#1) in our team. Upon being asked if we would take yet another guy (#2), we were sceptical if he was a good developer... Turned out guy #2 is one of the best of us, guy #1 can't do shit.
-
Wrote a good backup program, no one cares. I mean, its great if you want to create fast offsite backups! And it is simple to use, and has a pretty dedicated developer working on it all day long (Me)... Well, of course you would want to check it out, so here you go https://github.com/paulkramme/...7
-
how do you tell a junior dev on your team there code is shit and please don't push to the main codebase without approval first,
without crushing them and and sounding like an ass cause there a good person just a n00b developer8 -
Sometimes I think that life is too short to learn everything I need to become an actually good web developer. :(
-
Alright, fellow coders, I need your help this time <3
I was thinking about getting a full stack developer position after school, with mean/mern stack. (Yes, I love js, but you can hate me for that later)
So, I just got an offer for a front-end developer position that I didn't apply to but was recommended for by my full stack prof.
Everything is great about that company, but! I'm not sure I'm good for that!
My question is: does being a front-end developer mean being good at putting together nice looking website?
I'm good with angular, but suck at material or just CSS in general.
I can implement business logic, but anything more complex than grids causes my eye to twitch.
So, is front-end developer supposed to be good at design part of it or not?
Google says yes, but I got other opinions from my friends, but they are still students too!
All hope on you guys! Thank you8 -
Dear Erlang Developers!
I found this lib the best for payment integration. Good job to the developer who made this!

If you want to laugh in 3 minutes, there is a good documentary on one of the common species of developer here : https://youtu.be/ocwnns57cYQ

you can be a very good developer and still be a shitty person. Same energy you put in to become good as a software engineer, also put in same energy to become less of a shitty person.4
-
When you are a front end developer you disassemble every other good website you visit and then forget about your real intention for visiting that website ;)
-
Here are my goals
-Don’t wait until last moment to resolve issues
-Be a good developer and training interns so that they will have something to take away
-Learn more stuff -
Tomorrow is the first day in my new company. Working as a developer. It's the 3th and biggest company I'm working in since finishing university and it feels so good. Especially because this job now is in one of the biggest cities of our state.1
-
As a developer, when learning a new language how do you know when your good enough to start making projects to test knowledge or skill?6
-
Just got myself a Pixelbook and man is this thing a sweet little machine! Excellent battery life, a pretty decent backlit keyboard and I can work on my personal project using VSCode and the integrated debugger!
Google is doing a good job with making Chromebooks developer friendly.2 -
Pure java person put on a project running micro services on docker.. Cannot understand a thing but good developer ego not letting me ask some1 to explain me.. Weird situation 😅😅😅1
-
The ultimate goal of every developer:
You are so good that the bug of your app is seen as a feature by users 😎6 -
Have anyone of you ever asked during an interview why did the previous developer leave the job at this company?
I just want to know if it's good or bad thing to ask during an interview. I don't want to sound rude.6 -
Being a fresh junior developer and trying to build experience is all well and good except when some companies ask for a minimum of two years experience...
-
What are some good android developer communities? Looking for somewhere to learn and ask questions that might not be code related, so can't be on stack overflow. What do you use? I use android for hobby projects only.5

Hey I want to ask some react project suggestion that are good for interview as an experienced web developer. I don't want to build calculator :(

Went to a job interview with a senior developer and HR woman
We talked about me, previous expriences, and the company, in general. No tech questions asked, 2 days later got accepted.
Feels really weird... Does that happen often to you guys?
p. s. It's a normal company with a pretty good and known product in my country.7 -
I think the difference between a monkey and a good developer is that good devs ask why? And try to find out.
Whereas a monkey just does what he's told and learns just enough to do what they need to do, usually by being told directly rather then figuring it out themselves through trial and error. -
Advices looking for a job in Canada as a foreign?
I've been a software developer for 4 years now. I started in small company in Rome as jr developer where I'm now the CTO... I now feel stuck in this job cause the company makes a lot of money from the core product and there is no room for innovation.
I was looking for a drastic change in my life and career and Canada seems a good place to me.
So, any advices?9 -
Suggest a good back end language to a junior Android developer? I am thinking of learning a back end language ( I'm leaning towards RubyOnRails) for making API and some server side code . What would you guys suggest?12

Hey everyone.. I am a Graphic and Web Designer plus developer and I am going to create brand identity for myself but I am looking for something creative and good names. I like something like GraphicOwl or GeekyOwl.. Also suggest a slogan or tagline.7

Is it possible at all to be a really good developer and maintain good interpersonal relationships?2

Any Django developer over here ? Can you suggest me some good resources to learn Django in short time ?4
-
I feel like a good rule of thumb of how good a developer is (or how senior are they) is whether they know when a question should go in stackover and when it should go in softwareengineerin.stackexchange.
Do anybody agree?1 -
MediaWiki is a great revision tool,
I set one up and me and a few friends are adding notes on there, sometimes it's good to be a developer :) -
#!/bin/rant
# Is good to be back
Life is funny, I spend years ranting about WordPress and Mac computers, while being a full stack developer, then I got the opportunity to study music abroad, two months into the semester I get offered a scholarship to work with a Mac managing WordPress sites.
Isn't life funny? -
What use is a frontend developer (having exclusively frontend development knowledge) that's not a designer / isn't good at design.
Sorry if I'm being harsh, but you're either a web developer, knowing how to build web apps (or websites, or whatever), or a UX developer or whatever, knowing how to do pretty (and usable and accessible and...) things. Or even both.
Lemme say it differently. You either come from a web design and build a frontend, or come from the development of an application (database, logic, architecture, APIs, etc., backend++) and build a frontend for it. Again, or both.
Not being able to design, and not being able to build a product, is just... nothing? You're in the middle.
Sorry, but I don't think you're a developer. Maybe a coder.11 -
I need help for a dev test.
So the company that I work at is hiring a couple of new devs and they’ve put me in charge for test in order to see if the applicants are any good.
When I was hired there were no tests so I don’t have that many ideas for a good one.
Have you guys any good recommendations for a test or what it could consist of?
I’m thinking of having multiple small tests so if one misunderstands the task it’s not the whole test they fail. Would that be a good idea or not?
It’s for senior and junior web developer.
Any idea is greatly appreciated 😀5 -
I'm working as a senior software developer at my company.
My seniors are asking me to take the scrum master role.
Is it good for my professional development.
Will I be cut off from the technologies that I work on now. I don't want to leave development. Can I do both at once?4 -
Some companies: asking for a developer, must have 5 years of experience. Must know C#, php and Python. Also expert in html css react angular and vue. Salary: scrubs. Haha good look looking for the ultimate developer senior for €1800 a month :’)1
-
The position in the company i started working for not long ago was for a dotnet developer. But it ended being heavy sharepoint focused and mostly front end javascript (that i am not very good at, that's why i wanted backend), doing stuff like hide this button, css that input etc. Really confused now and wondering how much il learn from this job considering its my first job as a developer and that i really want to do mvc with dotnet core. 😐😐 Does this have any value or i shouldn't be so picky for a first developer job?1
-
So besides college, what are some good books, podcasts, articles, websites, games, apps, etc. To learn how to code and be more proficient in that language?
Any information helps
"Every great developer you know got there by solving problems they were unqualified to solve until they actually did it" -Patrick McKenzie1 -
Every developer thrives to be the best. But, it's not only the skills, hard work or knowing infinite languages makes you the best. It only makes you the good.
Along with skills, hard work & the languages, the best one needs to have those instincts about the possible solutions to a problem and ability to decide and implement the most efficient solution cleanly in least amount of time.
I'm thriving to be the best. Are you?3 -
Fuck you WooCommerce and fuck you shopify, also a big fuck you to every developer who thinks it's a good idea to notify other customers about what another customer just bought in real time.
Guess fucking what. I don't fucking care what uncle deadinthehead just bought. Get fucking raped in a columbian prison and die to aids infested rain..2 -
For the game devs out there … Is following a game developer career a good idea ? We always hear about crunch and no work life balance. Im thinking about changing my job( currently a dev at a fintech company) for a while and need some insights from you guys :)7
-
When I study just to pass tests, I'm a bad student. When I write software to pass tests, I'm a good developer. 🤔
-
When I will be ready to be transitioned to a promoted developer.
I have been with a company for 2.5 years and nit much development from it. As the review processes are nothing and we are all doing whatever we could and deploying everything to prod.
Now I have changed my company and been a level 1 developer. It's still an entry level role.
I am working towards my promotion but still the as a growth team I am not getting enough chances to work on something good. My design skills are still not good.
What should I do? I have been in this role for a year now. If I want to transition any other company will offer me a level 2 developer role. Should I go into applying for jobs for level 2 when I know that I am not enough? I am afraid that of I waited in my current company I will be stuck for 2 more years here. -
IMO it depends to what one means by "made it".
switch(made_id) {
case "is a developer" -> "when one develops a software product, regardless of whether for work or personal purposes";
case "got a dev job" -> "when one gets a dev job";
case "can be called a dev" -> "when job title has .*developer.* in it";
case "is a good dev" -> "when job title has .*senior developer.* in it";
}
For me personally it means getting a SW development job that pays my bills and keeps growing my savings account. Pretty much like @AlmondSauce said it.
I for one iterated through all the cases above and each time I achieved the goal I felt like I "made it".
Appetite comes with eating -
Just because you are new from university and don't understand the stuff this oh so very important senior developer does, does not mean he is doing a good job.
Latest when he leaves the company and you stay behind maintaining and extending the project you will notice...3 -
Hey developer community.
Need to ask you all something.
Do you consider "To be good at competitive programming" or even experienced at that, with some kind of benefit in your fields ? Maybe even that can help in getting job interviews which are rather difficult to score by applying online. Just need y'all two cents. :)2 -
My First ever VSCode extension is live.

Hey guys, my boyfriend is a software developer and he wants to start developing video games, he would like to design games but is not good at drawing, I have been advised that a wacom would be a good gift for someone that wants to become a game developer, what do you guys think? Is it a good gift even if he is not good a drawing?3

Anyone know any good JS ES6 courses? Don't mind the price. It's great if it encourages practical learning :)
(Got a new developer on the team, junior AF)2 -
I think it really depends on the person attending (why they want to be a developer, how they learn, their ability to apply what they learn etc) I think these bootcamps serve a good purpose by making helping people achieve their goals. I will say that pop culture has set some pretty unrealistic standards for what it is like being a developer, and a lot of the bootcamps are propagating that misconception
-
The JavaScript developer was sad because he wasn't a good English speaker.
He just didn't Node how to express himself!3 -
Hello y’all.
Could someone please show me what their/a good developer cover letter looks like?
It’s the thing that’s hardest for me at the moment3 -
I'm a full time lead developer, but I want a extra challenges etc. Does anyone know a good site etc, which you can do a few hours freelance or group projects?5

My dear JavaScript Dev friends is this a good day rate for a JS developer?

Whelp, so much for Dell making good on the 32gb sku for the xps 13 9300. 8 days late and 16gb short with minuscule storage at a $100 premium.

"Back-end" ahahahaha
Translating:
Back-end developer (São Paulo / Brazil)

Technical skills: Technical knowledge in PHP, Framework Code Igniter, HTML5, JavaScript (jQuery, Bootstrap, Json, and Ajax), responsive layouts and WordPress.
Projecting and modeling DB Knowledge. Good knowledge of usability, Cross-browser (IE7+, Chrome, Firefox, and Safari).

if you are a good developer, been dispensable in a project is like quicksand: the more you try not to be, more important you become ... and you die choked by Jira tickets and anger

Drop or be more flexible with the Math requirements. I took every programming course my High School offered including AP CompSci and passed with high grades. I wasn't able to pursue a degree because I wasn't "allowed" to take CS classes without first meeting the Calc 2 prerequisite. I am terrible with Math but programming makes sense to me, I'm good at it, and I enjoy it. I think it's horrible to stop someone from pursuing a degree because of a prerequisite. I understand the Math/CS relationship but being good at math doesn't make you a good developer. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Recruiter: Hi I have a position I feel you would love! My client wants a graduate developer with a couple of years experience in full stack development, javascript, sql and the whole .Net package.
Me: And this is a graduate position?
Recruiter: yes but I have put some people forward and they haven't had enough experience.
... Good luck to that company trying to find a developer who can do everything and pay them almost nothing. -
Does anyone have any tips on how to test a software developer for problem-solving skills and learning capabilities?
I don't really care if the developer knows frameworks and languages XYZ. I want to know if he/she can learn those things, knows how to find answers to problems and actually tries to do a good job. Those seem the most valuable skills to me.
Any suggestions?5 -
I am a php developer having total 3years of experience.More than coding I love to debugging and troubleshooting kind of works. So I am thinking of about Devops career.
Is it will be a good decision?
What do you think?13 -
Attend a global game jam with my cousin who is kinda lazy and is looking for girls. I find a good Unity developer and make him join our team. He coded and I helped for everything he needed for looking for music, graphics etc at the end he presented it and claimed all the credit
-
The term 'continuous rot' just came to mind as something like this: A lone/sole developer is hired to implement a solution but dispite the illusional good intent shared by everyone at the beginning, time constrains will soon come into play and the code deteriorates at a rapid pace until the developer can't handle it anymore... But someone else comes to continue the work... And the rot continues... And once again... And again...again....
Anyone?1 -
Started new job as software developer in a financial institution... Have to learn c#, c# devs here any good tips??7
-
me: Mum, Dad I want to a developer like [my older brother's name]
mum: I don't know what you guys do anyway. just make sure to be the best at it.
dad: Good luck, don't forget to start your own company soon enough. -
What have you suggested at work which sounded like a good idea at the time, but now sounds like a nightmare?
I inherited a nasty old legacy c# desktop app a few years ago, I was a sql developer so it was a steep learning curve, but I’ve tried to make it better, fixing things as I go.
I had the bright idea of mentioning that I would look at starting to add unit tests etc.
It seemed like a good idea at the time, but now I’m not so sure.3 -

Minecraft server, I was searching for a developer to build custom plugins so I wrote on a forum and he, Adam, replied saying he knew Java and he'd like to work with me.
I've chatted a lot with him, it's a really good friend!
In the same time I've started learning Java so I could help him, we're a team since 2015 :) -
I'm a back-end developer trying to improve my front-end skills, is there any good website that I can replicate/remake so I can improve my skills?3

Have you ever been in a situation where you're assigned to a new project, check the codebase and start wondering you've really made a good choice becoming a developer?1

A bit over one year ago I wrote the post about my sadness because I had big problems with changing my job to developer. Today I want to share with you about my happiness because I made that big change :D From January I’m Java Junior Developer, I met many awesome people and increased my programming skills over level I could imagin. Last Monday I changed my job and back to salary from before I started coding. Curve of skills and money is going in good direction. Thanks everybody for supporting and good words :) You’re awesome ^^,2

How to become a UX/UI designer given my situation?
So, I have worked as Software Developer for 3.5 years now. My work has involved mostly Backend, Java. For sometime I worked on front end but I am not aware of the front end architecture etc.
I am a graduate in Computer Science.
So right now, I have a good salary in a big MNC. How can I become a UX UI Designer for a good company?14 -

Lots of hate towards WordPress, which I understand as I avoided using it for years, but what is your preferred alternative.
To qualify, the alternative must have:
-An 'as good', simple post/page administration interface
- similar abilities regarding shop/blog and payment solutions
OR
have the ability to integrate these features for a reasonably proficient developer.8 -
Not really a backend developer but I give my best with node.js. The way I did it was just raw SQL everywhere, and now trying to figure out Sequelize. Holly shit its to complicated to me.
Anyone knows some good tutorials?1 -
I graduated university and feel i still dont know shit about computer science. Like sure i consider my self to be a good developer and all that but whats the point of calling yourself a computer scientist if you cant build a robot and program some AI into it.5

I just joined my company as a fresher in graduate developer, we will be going around in different teams over the course of next 6-7 months. My question is even though i joined as a " software developer" as of yet i am in a performance testing team, is it a good start or should i move to other team like development, QA testing etc ?1

Imagine you're a dev for mobile apps (xamarin based) and you have a great project opportunity for a client.
The problem is that the project would (besides an app) involve a web version and you don't have any experience in web development.
How would you hire a web developer for this? Via freelancer platforms like twago, via an agency or request a project from some web design company?
Related question: does anyone know a good web frontend developer :)?5 -
what I am doing is reading mathematics as people say developer needs good concept of mathematics

I've a question for my fellow developers here.
I've been thinking about pursuing a full stack developer course (a nanodegree) from Udacity. Are there any chances that I would score a good paying job after the course is completed.
Note: I have been working as a Java Developer since 2.5 years near Mumbai, India1 -
Is it something like, with a great salary band you don't need to go to US? I'm a software developer, I get good money, in India.
There are a lot of people moving to US, the people I think can only take right decisions.14 -
Best dev experience...a colleague who was my team lead when I joined a company as a "from-scratch" PHP developer, and gave me a ton of tips, assistance, encouragement and praise along the way. And for the bits that were not so good (on my part), he gave me constructive criticism delivered in a friendly and helpful way rather than chew me out.
And when the boss(es) of the company talked shit behind my back in meetings I was not invited to, about things they had no clue about (my performance as a developer)) he defended me and set the record straight.
Later he was demoted from team lead for office politics reasons. But was doing the same job as before, for less pay. Never complained.
His job consisted of, all at once, being the company IT/server/printer guy, first line customer support over phone and remote desktop, .NET and PHP developer, course holder to teach our customers how to use our product, and mentor to me.
Good guy. I'd give him a ++ if I could. -
When you're such a good developer, you just download a template and forget to change the title in header..or when you just don't want to pay someone to do what you don't know.

My focus is cloud infrastructure and developer tools. I like it because of the complexity and the feeling that enabling developers to do more is a multiplier of good I can do in the world.

Any of you guys have a cool project that I can help with?

I'm new to github though I have several years as professional web developer2 -
Being a developer allows you to enjoy using most of the creative skills artists also put to use (writing structured prose, design, semantics, ergonomics, ethics), while adding logic, job safety, and a decent paycheck to the mix.
Also: puts you in a good position to readily take advantage of new digital goodies (eg bitcoin), and to understand the gem that is developer humor -
How to grow in a start up as a developer?
For sure, the scale is low. Product is easy to understand. How to grow so that I can proudly say that I solved this business problem or at least sound like I solved something good?2 -
When you started your career as a developer and did your first feature implementation which will be hands on thousands of people across the world FEELS GOOD MAN. 😎
What's your first feature implementation devRant's ??? -
My first programming teacher was from a payed course and he was a very good teacher but it just taught me the ABC of programming. How to be a developer and how to develop that's something acquired mainly by self teaching, practice and experience. So that the second course I followed I didn't learn anything new, the teachers were not so good and I they had to learn from me. It was shit. At least it was a free course.

As a developer, staying focused on task is paramount. I listen to all kinds of music with a good BPM to help me either concentrate on my code or the song and nothing else. Recently I have found out about Magic Sword, and it made me wonder, what are y'all listening to these days while slinging code?1

Is there anywhere that you can get your open source code brutally reviewed?
As the (almost) sole developer on a project (and only just entering the world of professional software development), I have no idea if the stuff I've written is good, bad, or just plain disgusting, and obviously the only way to improve is to be aware of the mistakes you made3 -

Firstly give me the skill equivalent to the best in the field. If the rules allow it all of these skills listed and if not any of these :-
1. Computer networking to the point of having the same knowledge as the best in the field. Why? I am curious about that stuff and being able to work as a network engineer if I don't get a good Dev job
2. Cyber security. Why? I enjoy it and being able to make sure my code is not easily exploitable is a cherry on top. Also having a backup job in case I don't get a good dev job
3. Being able to communicate with non dev people about developer or non developer stuff easily and being a really good leader.
4. Being a good developer in whatever language I use and instantly being able to learn new programming languages and frameworks or libraries with ultra in depth information. -
In your opinion, is it a good decision to migrate on freelancing on blockchain development as a fullstack web developer, by a financial point of view? I guess there is an increasing request and income for blockchain-based projects.5

I've worked with SWIFT for a good amount of time. I can't say that I'm a great developer in the language or any language for that matter but I think I should learn PYTHON first. What do you guys think?

Trying to become a software developer by teaching myself with tutorials, books, etc. and then realizing that I need an idea for a project to practice my skills. I don't have a good grasp of software architecture and the tutorials on the webs on this topic suck.

For the first time, I will use “developer rant” for learning sth.
I am trying to learn concurrency in cpp. I tried CPP Concurrency in Action but the book is dry, no examples. Can you suggest a book with good examples and exercises, like CPP Primer?2 -
If you've ever had to do hiring (technical side) of new software developer\s, the seniority in terms of working years is the most valuable criteria for you or the hiring department, or there's else?
On my side I'm a software developer from around 1 year and here (in Italy) your price is, from what I've seen, based on the seniority in terms of time, rarely actual skills\adaptability.
I'm good as a full stack developer and I'm proficient in adapting\learning to-new\new skills about new languages and Frameworks.
Soon I'm leaving my underpaying job with good output from my work\projects, but I'm faced with this seniority nonsense that makes most of the recruiters silent because the new price is similar of someone with high seniority, and I'm kinda tired of this, so I'm here to hear your thoughts about this. -
Worst documentation: macOS developer API, e.g. the already deprecated kauth API still have documentation like this: https://developer.apple.com/documen...
Really good on the other hand, this: Ordered the stuff, waited 3 months, flashed the NodeMCU and assembled it within 10 minutes:

Optics matter. You could be doing a shit job (as a developer), but if you keep up the good optics with the boss, agreeing to build a calculus app in the future, even though the multiplication api you are currently working on keeps throwing error, you'll look good.2
