I go to unlock my car, but the button I usually use is gone. Instead now it unlocks by long-pressing the car handle.
Ok, got it.
Then my ignition isn't there? Oh, it's in the middle of the steering wheel now? Ok.. but it doesn't work? Oh I have to sign in with Google or Facebook, alright...
Wait, where's my odometer? Oh this is "card" view, and I guess I want "compact" view, huh. Is there a dark theme? Guess not.
Why can't I shift? Oh the stick is a hamburger button now, weird. Um, and reverse is in a sub-menu? That's going to get annoying.
Alright just need to look in the mirror to see if.. wtf? You call this "responsive" or something? I can't see out that tiny window.
I'm very disappointed in all this, I wonder if I can roll back. Oh WHERE ARE THE BRAKES OH GOD
UX DESIGNERS

WHY DID WE TRUST THEM AND THEIR GODFORSAKEN UPDATES10 -
It is 2:15am and I am alone in the office. I seriously hear a mechanical keyboard, but nobody else is here. I guess I die tonight.25

This is not a joke. This is not something I wrote to be funny. This is not found randomly off the internet. This is a real part of the project I inherited: a function that not only is more cumbersome to use than the simple <Array>.contains that it wraps, but rather than returning the boolean result from the function, sends it through an if statement and returns hardcoded true and false values for... Good luck? I guess?47
-
I finally get in the mood to work on my side project and GUESS WHAT? THE API IM USING FOR IT IS FUCKING DOWN 😂🔫7
-
Guess who's birthday it is! It's my birthday and that are my birthday gifts my GF gave me 😍🤩
Also starring Dick-butt Debug-duck!
I feel blessed. 😁26 -
Boss refused to sing my termination latter saying he wont sign it until CTO returns from vacation (2-3 weeks)... So today i brought my freelance project to work and i work on it.. guess who is making more €/h today and doesnt have to pay for electricity11
-
I am currently at vacation and staying at a campsite.
There is a WLAN called 'Seecamping1'.
Well I had to try cracking their password...
First attempt: The name of the WLAN, didn't work.
Second attempt: 1234567890
...
Guess what.
It worked lol8 -
Made myself a little sparker :3 judging from the spark gap, the output is about 6-7kV I guess. Can't measure it though, it's way too high for my multimeters to handle. Taser, beefed up bugzapper module, electronic cigarette lighter, so many possible uses for this thing 😋49
-
Although she hates HTML, I had my girlfriend try to (re)create some kind of interface as a challenge. She remade the Mirror's Edge Catalyst menu - and she did well, I guess. (ofc her code is dirty and stuff - and it's far from responsive, but damn it looks smooth xD)14

One of my friend at college asked me why her computer is running slow even when she is running only chrome.
Me: how much memory does it have?
Her: 1TB.
Me (somewhat confused): no no I meant RAM.
Her: yeah yeah it's one TB. I read the specifications of the laptop.
Me: *in my mind, fucking read it again* please read it again. You must have misread it.
Her( grinning face ): alright.
Guess who didn't talk to me for a week. 😂14 -
*reads JSON license*
"The Software shall be used for Good, not Evil."
Well that's actually a nice license.. if only nuclear research etc could be licensed like that.
Wait actually.. WanBLowS is using XML for its "diagnostic data", right? I always found it so weird that they don't use JSON for that.. but I guess that this is why 🙃20 -
I'M AN IDIOT.
I accidentally typed the wrong command when I was compiling my C++ code with GCC, and guess what?
My .cpp file is gone. The .exe is still there, but that's useless to me right now.
It wasn't an important code, just something I recently started on, but I can't believe I did something so ignorant.17 -
The security blog is up again, I fixed the bug.
Just wondering, why did it work in the first place? I simply required a composer autoloader twice but I've been doing that from the beginning and it didn't play up until last night...
I guess it shall remain a mistery 😞82 -
"Can you get me free in app purchases?"
"Well i mean lucky patcher is kind of a gray area but I guess if y-"
"Can't you just have it with the command prompt?"
"I don't know CMD, I know Java."
"But you said you could code!"6 -
Got really pissed off writing a stored procedure the other day because the reason behind it is absolute bullshit.
Gave sproc to QA for peer review before release.
QA: why are the variables called @FuckThisShit and @ThisIsBollocks?
Whoops, guess I was more angry than I thought 😂3 -
I think I'm doomed when it comes to posting the kinds of rants that get upvotes. The pattern I've noticed is that profanity-laden rants get more love than ones that are more tame. I was raised old-school, so profanity isn't my thing. Guess I'll just sit back and watch.6

I installed one of those alarm apps that doesn't stop until you solve some puzzle or simple equation..
I ended up by uninstalling it when the first time the alarm started..
The problem is, I don't remember how I did it.. just I woke up a little late and the app not found..
I guess I was really tired !11 -

/* Hello world. I am new to this community and just wanted to announce. I am here! About me? I am a student from Hannover in Germany and some dudes told me about this social app. Currently we are learning basics of C (I guess it is version 89) */6 -
Is it illegal to upload a malware(worm) written in python to GitHub? I'm serious :)
I've written a worm which I want to share with my friends (and possible future viewers). My intent is to share my experience. So that they can learn from it. What they are doing with it afterwards, shouldn't be my problem, I guess. (I will put a disclaimer warning in the Readme file of course)16 -
I might lose my Job. Thanks to Central Bank of Nigeria's shenanigans, a promising FinTech startup might be about to go under.
Last month I got married, last month I got a raise. This morning, got told I'm being put on compulsory leave without pay (same as everyone).
Expecting no salary this month. I guess I'll be fine with some Laravel/Flutter freelancing.
Now, how to break the news to my wife. She knows I love my job, she's gonna be even more heartbroken/worried than I am. We were supposed to move to a bigger apartment next month when yearly rent here is due.
I guess we'll be alright. It is what it is.8 -
Shit morning, I work in tech, so I guess it is related haha.
First, I wake up and it is cold. Like -12 degrees Fahrenheit. With wind-chill, feels like -29 according to Google. Then, while getting ready for work, my only belt breaks. Not a little, but literally splits in half! Fucking sucks, as my pants keep partially falling down and my shirt keeps untucking.
I go out in this cold that could kill a polar bear, go to start my car. Can you fucking guess? Dead fucking battery. Fuck! Now I am super late to work.
Make it to work, and guess what? My manager just promised 100% completion by Friday, and we are weeks behind! Fucking sucks... I think my coworker snapped, as he keeps hyperventilating at his desk for no reason. Oh and our best coder just quit...
Waiting to either wreck my car or find out my dog is dead when I get home...4 -
Client: Everything is perfect but few small changes to be done.
Me: Wow, that will be easy.
*Client lists 100 points*
Client : Those are small changes. I guess it will be done in a day.
* Yeah sure I am Superman * :/2 -
Anyone watched 'Jhonny English Strikes Again'? This is the code that drives the exoskeleton... I guess it just needs a random number to work. 😂😂3

I have a noisy client laptop fan.
It is like a DJ... 📼
Some time it sounds
Taaaaarrrraaaaa...
Some times
Tararararara....
Other times
Tara...tara..tara....
I am getting addicted to it
I am keeping headphones at home now as noise cancellation is not that good and have to listen to laptop fan music.
I have to ask for replacement.
But I guess I will miss my DJ then 😭3 -

I am about to move into my own house. Yay. But every ISP I called is very insistent that there is no house there.
"Are you sure you entered the right building number? The entered house does not exist." Yes it does! And it has existed since 1912...
Stupid Germany with its stupidly bad internet infrastructure. I guess that's what you get for privatizing the network.7 -
Friend: Can you write me a discord bot?
Me: Sure, I guess.
Me: *thinking* I can probably do it in 2 hours or less*
Me: *2 hours later* why does this API work like that and why the fuck is my node module folder so big???9 -
Me at school: Erh I make programs and I guess it is sort of a hobby
The other kids: SO YOU CAN HACK PEOPLES COMPUTERS AND PHONES??? :0
Me: Not exactly, I actually program websites and some games...
The other kids: WOAH CAN YOU PLEASE MAKE ME A CUSTOM GTA???

So I studied for a long time about scrum, convinced my boss, his boss and our team to consider it, everyone liked it but seems to don't understand it very well.
I organized meetings about it and everything...
This week the majority of our team will attend a Google event about scrum in another city.
Guess who is not going?11 -
Was searching how to embed youtube video in html and found this in w3schools..... The guy who wrote this turorial hates auto play i guess.... It really is annoying 😡10

A coworker that is producing incredibly bad code and refuses to learn new stuff was declared "senior developer" by my boss. And me with over 20y experience? I am just a junior.. and have to clean up his mess all the time. I guess it is time to find new job.5

I guess the best feature of devRant is that the homepage, where we see all the rants, does not show who posted each rant. It just shows the rants. That's it. Great to see the app is "rant centric" and not "user centric".3

I got bored at school and I always wondered how a tattoo similar to this would look, it is okay I guess... just don't stare it for too long 😂😂😂12 -
I hate when shit that is irrelevant and has 0 value makes it to news sites.
For example, TechCrunch today: Former FBI Director James Come changes Twitter handle". Ok? I give literally 0 fucks because guess what: HIM CHANGING HIS FUCKING TWITTER HANDLE DOESN'T MEAN SHIT. THIS ISN'T FUCKING NEWS. IT'S FUCKING GOSSIP.1 -
Our prof told us today in a zoom lecture: "Never visit b-ok.org, it is totally illegal", with emphasis on how he would NEVER recommend to visit that website for free education illegally.
I guess he is totally against the idea of pirating educational material15 -
Well, I just learned how much of a pain it is to learn the math for learning neural networks. I really should have paid more attention in high school.
I will learn, the hard way I guess...6 -
Just discovered devRant. Can't get off it. I guess that is it for me and coding then. I will be scrolling through all the rants for the rest of my life.15

99.999999% of the reason I like UWP is because of the Acrylic. It is a pain in the ASS to use otherwise.
Here's a small pixel art program I'm working on I guess. -
This is adorable
The packages name is oneko, you can even set colours or speed, or make it an... Anime girl?
Whatever suits you best, I guess
Almost forgot, it's an actual animated cat that's running after the mouse22 -
I just got offered my first position for a Junior developer gig. they are offering me more money than I expected and otherwise I'm super amped to take it.
what makes me nervous is its my first programming position. I have an IT/Programming bachelor's but not a pure Computer Science degree.
I was asked no technical questions and I don't know if it was clear that I'm very much looking for entry-level work. I guess the fear of failure is creeping up on me.9 -
I'm seriously having a lot of fun with ChatGPT and learning a whole bunch of things I didn't know before. The ease of asking it questions and getting a general idea on things is amazing.
Bye bye to my job, but at least I'll know a bunch of different things, I guess 😂11 -
While getting a pro in Kotlin, I started using
when(condition) {
true -> doOneThing()
false -> {
xyz = whatEver()
blaBla()
}
}
instead of simple if-else.
It looks nice but also distracting.
What is your opinion on that?
I guess most will be like:6 -
>dad nagging to learn python
>i hate python

Fuck I hate bloated app permissions but I guess todo lists that know who you most likely to chat to when taking a dump is what we get for demanding everything for free. I get why Snapchat wants so much, I just find it fucking ironic that this is from a company that founded itself on the concept of privacy 🤦♂️7

Tiny little line of random JS code.

So I need to "fix" a false-positive security warning (mass-assignment of a foreign key). Do I "fix" it by...
A) Setting it manually and double-saving the object?
B) Rewriting the mass-assignment so the linter doesn't realize what I'm doing?
Both options suck.
But security is going to complain if I don't do it.
Guess what?
I'm not doing it.
SMD you ducks.10 -

No real feature, but it is a bug and this makes it a feature I guess.1 -
Finished my internship today, turns out I won't be getting hired because upper management is cutting back due to COVID.
Fuck fuck fuckity fuck, compared to the horror stories I've read here, it was beautiful. The work experience was super worth it though, despite the intern pay. Time to start looking for a real job I guess.2 -

The kicker is that they never even talked to IT about the feature let alone give us a decent spec/assignment.

This is what I get for trying out arch I guess.14 -
Why is Drupal so hard to learn?!!!!!!
It feels like you are learning an entirely new language. Yes it makes hard things simple, at the same time making simple things hard to accomplish.
And also modules are buggy, you would fix bugs instead of doing your tasks.
I want to learn Drupal but I guess it is not friendly for beginners like me.12 -
Is it just me or do others also question their decisions regularly during a project?
Is this the best framework to accomplish this task? Should really I name the function like this?...
Currently thinking about whether Qt is the right framework for (cross platform) app development. Guess the grass is always greener on the other side...7 -
Is it just me or do you guys sometimes go like "Ah fuck it, haven't had a good night's sleep in so long, I guess I should sleep early tonight" and then you look at your watch and its already late?
God what I would give to get up early for once.7 -
- Finish own blogging website (Vue/Flask as front/back-end)
- Improve my recently published Android App
- Learn ML (have a book for it)
- Maybe start learning Go or Rust
I guess that is way to optimistic but point 2 & 3 should be enough for 2018.
BUT there is also the real world:
- Graduating school
- Start studying.
So this is me for 2018 (at least the first half of it):5 -
Guess what this App is written in (Lib/Framework/Language). You won't possibly believe it. (As I also didn't.)
Desktop: Gnome Shell with Pop-Dark-Compact.16 -
I'm a python fanboy, not gonna lie.
I love everything about it. It's clean syntax, ready to use out of the box-ness, convenient built-in functions.
The one thing I hate is the official documentation. It's ugly, hard to navigate and a cluster fuck.
But it has proper information, so it's fine I guess. tsch12 -
Got internship opportunity. It's just an internship, but still it feels exciting and surreal for me. It feels weird because there is not really anything exciting about salary.
I guess it's the "my first job opportunity" butterfly.2 -
Ok it is official I need a life. I mean a real life with those things called "friends", "parties" etc. etc.
I realized this while looking at some code I, loudly, said "Wow today's is your birthday you're exactly two months old!".
I let you guess reaction of my colleagues.10 -
found these goodies for free today. guess I'm not sleeping this weekend.
Is it normal that I enjoy reading research papers XD ???7 -
I was a tad drunk last night because the week was... more than exhausting.
I felt like a pinhata yesterday - pretty beaten up and gutless.
Woke up this morning still a lil tipsy and decided to just be happy and don't give a damn.
Decided to take a hot bath to get nice and relaxed.
My smartphone decided to commit suicide and slided in the bath tub while I was in the kitchen making coffee.... And water was still running.
:) Bye bye smartphone, no more annoying messages.
While bathing, I relaxed a bit too much I guess.
Felt a bit of pain but then so much better because something in my back "plopped" back to where it belonged I guess?
I managed to rip off the shower curtain with my foot since it was a very short moment of "fucking frigging shit that hurt".
During that moment I also created a great flood, bath room is still wet...
And the funniest thing is: I don't give a damn.
Smartphone is definitely dead, ordered a new one, will arrive next week.
Guess I should stay the weekend on the couch before I accidentally blow up the mansion.
:)
I don't know where this good mood is coming from, but damn it has been a long time.11 -
I guess this is the devRant update Birthday edition! It's my birthday and unfortunately I have to spend it at work. Luckily, I have devRant to keep me from being bored to tears.5

I got an interview on monday but i completely forgot i even applied. They said its java AND c#, so i can guarantee a 50% score i guess.
Can someone explain what the fuck is a namespace while we r at it?5 -
Once in a while I feel like Big Head on Silicon Valley when he was at Hooli. Guess it is not the worst thing. Maybe they will promote me to the moonshot department.
Maybe some day I will get his type of buyout. -

I'll just upload all videos i want transcribed onto Youtube in smaller (10 minute?) chunks where machine transcribe is enabled...2 -
I hate that "integer overflows" have become somewhat pop culture because anytime I see someone try to use it in a joke, they use it wrong.
I've even seen people confuse them with stack overflows and be like "my intelligence is so low it stack underflowed and became the max of an integer value!"
Or "It overflowed and became zero again" ah, I guess it happened to be unsigned and overflowed by precisely 1 then eh?
So cringe15 -

I'm marking some exams for the class I teach right now, and I'm just so FRUSTRATED at the number of students that can't just fill out a STUPID multiple-choice answer!!! For goodness sake, don't just leave it blank, and don't give me 2 answers! How difficult is it to just guess a number between 1 and 4?!?!2 -
fucking zoho and their fucking sign up and authentication process.
they need a mobile phone number for the sing up, alright fine, I provide. but after submitting the form, nothing fucking happened and i am redirected to the initial sign up page. fuck you.
try again and guess what, said my phone number is already used and i can try sign in with it. ok alright, i try to sign in using my number and my password. guess what? i am redirected back at the initital sign up form page. fuckkkkkkkkkk.
i try again with another number. and then this time, guess what? said the fucking email is already existed. jesus fucking fucking christ.
browse around their help desk and found this. https://help.zoho.com/portal/kb/...
sure I follow the advice and guess what? yeah i'm redirected back to the FUCKING GOD DAMN same page again.
I gave up and wanted to send them a reply on their help desk and try to log in using one of my other existing zoho accounts. GUESS WHAT? THEIR HELP DESK LOG IN IS NOT WORKING. ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
I click "Sign In". Login as User or Login as Agent dropdown appear. I click Login as User since my user account is already logged in. It nothing happened. It flashed and I am back at the help desk thread with no changes. It is still "Sign In" at the top. I fucking give up.3 -
One thing I learned early on was...
"If the bug is not where you are looking...look somewhere else."
I just spent 2 hours looking at 50 lines of code pulling my hair out why it wasn't working. Guess what...those lines were correct. The bug was somewhere else.4 -
Wow, great read for anyone that's interested.
https://linkedin.com/pulse/...
For example, this snippet is very true and I guess a lot of use know it. (It's how I became a programmer).1 -
PR comment: You don't need this useCallback and this useMemo, it's premature optimization, this component will not have a lot of rerenders anyway.
*remove it and merge it*
Few weeks later...
Slack message: why the app is so slow???
*opens a PR putting back all "premature" optimizations*
PR comment: Hum... I don't think that's it, but let's try it.
*merge it*
*slowness is gone*
Slack message: wow! How did you figured out so quickly???
Me: I was lucky, I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯2 -
On Friday I was planning on working on getting the MVVM pattern down in C# and WPF. Today I watched episodes of Smallville all day. I seem to have a lack of motivation, but I guess it is the weekend. 😜1

Client just asked why no progress has been made this week and refuses to accept it is a result of them not answering my emails or providing content. I made a DevRant while I wait for a response!
I guess it wasn't as URGENT as the subject line suggested...2 -
The response to Unity Tiny seems to be mostly "wow such small". I guess it shows just how bloated software is these days...4

It just so happens that our IT partners have a CPO and the very same company forgot to install Antivirus software on our servers... I guess the servers are protected by God™. 😅12 -

My family had no particular reaction. I wanted to be a programmer since school, and they knew it was my intended goal.
I guess, my uncle being a professional programmer was something that showed it is a good choice.4 -
Just a few hours ago... The project we worked on for so long... Vanished in front of me... 6 months of pain, highly hoping for a raise.
I guess I should count myself lucky, the other person is no longer working with us. I did like her a lot, ngl.
Is it even worth staying here, I do not know. But there is no other place to work with Rust that I know of...4 -
"Let me just quickly clean up the old stashes since everything is merged and I won't need them... "
Guess what, I needed that stash, and I had it saved 20 minutes ago.10 -
I'm the only dev in a project. I'm a frontender. It was supposed to be a front end project. Now I know more about ruby and postgres than I wanted. Thanks for learning opportunities, I guess. Good that the deadline is still pretty far away.2

Valgrind is awesome. Today I fixed a lot of memory leakage / overflow bugs thanks to it. An guess what? Now, everything works!

I am learning angular. As a beginner, I feel there is too much fiddling with this thing :-( ...anyway, I guess when you are used to it and understand why everything is the way it is it becomes normal and understandable.9

Waiting for an interviewee since over half an hour.
20 minutes ago he called from a local undertaker searching us... From there it is a 5 minute walk to our company.
I guess we don't hire someone who cannot use Google Maps to determine the location of a company...15 -
It works locally, it works in Dev, it works in Test, but fails to deploy in UAT. Is it a data issue? I don't know, I don't have permissions to see the UAT database. Literally all I know is that this API is returning 500 instead of what it's supposed to return, but only sometimes.
Guess I'll sit here all day and try to solve the problem telepathically as there is literally no way of troubleshooting other than scrolling through the code and hoping that a cartoon lightbulb appears above my head.2 -
I work for a big bank. I'm going to say pretty much the entire Support team is incompetent.
Oh something went wrong? Escalate to devs... cuz we have no idea wtf to do and don't have the most basic technical problem solving skills...
Bunch of useless monkeys... btw guess what time it is now? And what I'm doing?5 -
PC crashed while in the middle of a build, "ok, shit happens". Reboot, pc is super sluggy (a BSOD kinda does that, I guess). Reboot again and I check the event logs...I didn't find the problem, but at least my pc is sorry for whatever it was doing earlier.1
-
Just compleeeetteellyy messed up a technical interview.. stupid theory.. I can apply all that stuff but when I get asked to explain then . Well.. I messed up.
And the coding part, I had the right approach but had one big brainfart in it making the whole thing useless (pseudo code so couldnt test it). I realized just after the interview was finished..
I hate the feeling of failure.
Was a really nice position which is why I applied. Ah well, tonight is whiskey night I guess.8 -
One of my most inspirational places to create devRant rants! I visit it every week. For a Sunday fun experiment I will gift the first person to guess where it is a devRant 'devie' stress ball or t-shirt. You must provide specific details. We can figure out prize logistic details thru @dfox. There are hints in the image 😀 Enjoy!16

The thing that I most hate is when you're approaching a new framework/tool, you follow the official documentation and the first example doesn't work.
I'm trying the official documentation of webpack, I tried the first example and guess! Error! It says that's probably a breaking change. Where the hell should I learn it? I don't have the crystal ball, should I guess how your fucking tool fucking works? Oh my god, it's ok if you introduced breaking changes, but just update all the references, is it so hard? -

Can someone tell me what's with the yellow rubber ducks? What is the story behind it ( or its usage which , i guess, is related to debugging)?4
-
So i got myself a TeamTreeHouse subscription last month to learn python. But I guess I'll have to discontinue.
My laptop can't take it anymore. I'll have to wait until I buy a new one 😅
I have to choose between paying for sister's education loan or my laptop. Guess who is in not getting a laptop 🙂12 -
So, I guess this is some good news...
I'm currently on annual leave, speaking to few colleagues and one of them mentioned that the Snr. dev mentioned in my previous posts has handed in his notice.
We also have a new line manager, so hopefully I'll actually be able to sort out technical debt, implement the changes I want to implement without being blocked off or PRs closed without notice.
So I guess this is a win, also means a new Snr. dev position has opened up so you bet I'm gunning for it when I get back.2 -
python devs are not devs
why do you need numpy and 30 other packages to change some lights on a keyboard
and then the kicker is that it doesn't even work, because it can't find a daemon I guess
this is so fragile
so ridiculous
every time, these math people8 -
Speaking of JS gotchas. Why is there a null and undefined? I guess undefined doesn't exist, but null is it exists, but is null? Had a bug related to this. I was checking for null, but undefined was getting in there even though I defined the variable as null beforehand. All I can guess is some assignment shoved undefined in there. But that just doesn't make sense to me. So an existing variable can be undefined as well? lol
I am glad this is not my primary language for heavy lifting. Fuck this noise.
I was going to do this as a rant. But it turned into an ironic joke. I am adding an old meme, but it checks out for accuracy.23 -
I was booting Ubuntu into my pendrive, it was almost completed but suddenly an error pops up.
- error the device is in use by another process
Guess what, I've to start the whole process again !! -
Why is it that every python project I come across seems to not even want you to use it.
The deployment always sucks, you get some random ass errors because some parts are in python 2 instead of 3 I guess. If there's a C library involved it most definitely won't work. What the fuck is conda and why do I need it to install software?
Where is the documentation to build a release yourself if the public ones don't work?6 -
This is all the DHCP settings I get on this shitty router I got from my ISP. The other settings are more the less the same, which is trash. Don't even get me started on the interface.
The thing doesn't even support *WRT firmwares because it has a Realtek CPU.
Thanks. Guess I'll have to buy a new router now...7 -
i always assume that my code is right so when the compiler gives an error, its hard for me to find out why it gives an error and why it doesnt work. my mind is too convinced that it is correct.
i guess i have to sleep it off 😴 maybe tomorrow it will be easier to fix5 -
Previous related rant:
https://devrant.com/rants/1423178/...
Paşa survived it! His kidney is recovering again!
Even the doc was shocked about it.
Guess I made the best decision of my life yesterday :,)6 -
Returning moron here, missed ya guys.
Now, idk if this qualifies as politics but i guess it does have something to do with tech/privacy/hacking.
Free Julian Assange?
Surprised no one is talking about this honestly. @linuxxx any opinions?28 -
My coding style is extremely fundamental (I guess); meaning I have to write every piece of code myself and I don't like to use anything ready, which makes me very slow and costs the employer lots of money and time.
It's becoming very discouraging, but I just can't give it up!
Any ideas how to improve this situation?5 -
2 hours ago my vacation started
5 minutes ago I got a sentry error, a certain page is inaccessible for some reason
Guess who's definitely not going to fix that
(there are other people that can fix it tomorrow) -
Non english-native devs - when you work with foreign customers, do they insist on using your name as it is pronounced in your country, or do they prefer to use English substitutes?
I mean - I'm from Poland. We have a call with a guy from France and he goes on and calls everyone as it is in Polish, but sometimes I know it would be easier for him to go for English names (we can translate them easily, no one would be offended, I guess)
Is it the case in your work? :v19 -
So, here at this place ... last person to touch a project is the sole person responsible for it being a success or failure. Wtf?!?!?!
If a client sends me the wrong picture, and agrees that is the correct one, and then it goes to production. Later on to find that it was never correct to begin with ... guess who's fault that is?
Is everybody taking crazy pills?
Don't answer that, I already know the answer.4 -
A week ago I raised an issue claiming I couldn't ping service x and that it was blocked
Today I figure out ping is blocked on firewall level and http requests work fine
Guess that's my big blunder this internship2 -
Continued rant of : https://devrant.com/rants/1152021
Ok, I am using this program again, this time with 43 programs (i guess), and it saves me at least 30 minutes.
Some were interested how I made it, well, another person (who is not in devrant) helped me (and he is not from stackoverflow) make it.
You can see how it works (the frontend) by looking at the image below.
I am afraid that I can't release the source now, and maybe not soon because of personal reasons.
Back to the point, I found a massive bug there, you can see "Finding uninstaller" in the middle of the two, and I can't fix it, so I shall just leave it alone.
It is Saturday now or Sunday I guess, take a good rest, and get back to work in Monday! (or school for students) -
Okay so I just went from getting no feedback on job applications to having more appointments than I can manage.... You'd think this is a good thing but how do you do this with or raising suspicion... Guess it means I did something right in all my hard work and late nights....11
-
Guess who just spent the entire day before launch debugging why compose doesn't work on an ec2 instance where I DIDN"T INSTALL FUCKING DOCKER
I guess this is the key difference between me and seniors. Seniors know where to look where shit breaks because they have been breaking it for at least 5 years.7 -
I'm not sure if this should be a joke or random, but the SBB train info screen in St. Gallen on platform 5 just decided to interpret the data given a bit differently than intended.
It is not broken and no other screen has that problem. What could it be, I wonder. But I don't care enouht to post it as a question.
I guess random would have been more appropriate.13 -
This is how it works in my company:
-> Spend entire day in meetings - don’t get anything done.
-> Start working at 6pm if you want to get anything done.
Those who have gotten promotions are the ones that have bought into this system.
I guess I won’t be getting a promotion any time soon7 -
Lol this is actually funny
It was a promotion that involved doing more work but didn't involve me getting a change in title or pay
Thing is tho... The promotion was caused due to developers leaving left right and center and I left shortly after as well...so I guess it makes sense that they maybe saw that I was planning to leave *shrugs*1 -
Trello + time camp + gmail to trello.
I clock any task, having a clock makes me want to finish it faster. I guess it is a leftover from gaming. -
Guess you guys don't care about goals like "losing weight" and that stuff. So my code-related goal is MASTER VUE.JS ONCE AND FOR ALL. Seriously, I need to start using it in production or I will keep wasting my time.2
-
Being the only developer in your circle of non-tech friends is weird 😕.
And why are most female programmers not appealing 🤦♂️.
The beautiful ones are usually clueless and can't get into a ”deep programming concept ”conversation.
I guess I can't eat my cake and have it at a time.18 -
Just noticed github shows Infinite contributors for chromium repository. (https://github.com/chromium/...).
Also, I clicked on the contributors tab and the page is still loading. Guess it will take infinite amount of time to finish loading :?3 -
My computer started crashing two days ago. Logs say its the audio driver. Now I wanted to start the diagnosis just for fun. Guess what? The conclusion of it was: You have a low volume level, we will increase it by 20%p... GOD DAMN. YOU HAD ONE JOB TO DETECT THE DRIVER IS OBVIOUSLY CORRUPTED (Reason: Unknown)1
-
1am and I'm waiting for my zipped project to finish uploading to OneDrive, so I can send my prof a link to it, because our fucking intranet just gloriously shat itself again -_-... Because a GitHub link is too mainstream I guess?
Ah yeah, deadline was 1h ago, but who cares about deadlines right?... -
I just got a project that is already developed by a team. It is already in the production and guess what!! They are storing customer’s credit card details in the database 🥸🥸12

I just can't believe in what state are the "leading" eCommerce systems. It just gives me depression and I'm totally desperate. :(
After 10-15 years one is xml hell, another is insane modules DIY administration, and the last one is bugy slugish mess. Try to guess which one is which.3 -
my issues with self learning .
Me : hmm so i want to make X. how can I make X?
*searches Internet. finds 15 min video title "Building X tutorial" *
tutorial guy : "Hey guys today we are going to make X. let's start. so here is this code a.b.c(d) . This will make X for you. Ok Bye "
Me: *tries his code* Hmm cool, it works. I got X . So let's guess what his code does ..
hmm so i think 'a' does this_thing. let me check. oh yeah my guess was right.
so let's go with 'b' .. hmm ok this does this_another_thing i guess . oh yeah it works.
...
"Yes i know how to make X, yay!"
----------------------------------------------
But this approach of finding the correct code and then guessing what it does does not always help me . i make presumptions based on a limited number of tests and they might not cover all the functions of a particular code.
thus there are chances that what *i* think a particular code does is completely different from what the code is supposed to do, under different circumstances. I constantly need someone to validate my assumptions and definitions.
So any other approach to learning that you devs could suggest?6 -
How is it called when I rant about something my colleagues experienced and I just supported his debug session? Third party rant? Anyway, here's the thing.
Other team built some project specific code right in the heart of their software, which in itself would be worth a rant. But as you might guess, it's getting rantier.
For a new project the same code is used, but needed some tweaks. Now guess what happened:
1) Someone took the code, refactored it, made project specific stuff configurable, everything works fine now
2) Someone changed the code completely for the new project, everything seems to work fine for 5 months, then the old project needed a new release 💣 -
So, I have an interview for a VB.Net gig. They are willing to pay to get me up to speed (last few jobs were C# and current is C). So I guess the question is: Should the remittance be good enough, would making the switch be worth it?8
-
Whatever the f is wrong with numpy devs!!!!
Like seriously bro....
I can't import the effing sklearn.decomposition to do some basic PCA and the best solution out there is to downgrade it to version 1.16.1. Like hell!!!!
Issue has been known since last year, but guess who cares effukers8 -
Windows is getting dumber by the minute.
It now forgot how time works completely.
I setup nightmode to start at 21:30 and end at 11:15, and guess what, it just activated night mode at 11:15 (!)
I hate windows for all it's downgrading my life to pointlessness...4 -
i guess im learning COBOL now..
didn't even know, this language still exists, and is alive until the Lead of the Department came around and asked me if i know that language, because they have a potential customer Project.
Others said, i shouldn't do it, but i'm also curious.
At the very least i will check it out 🦕5 -
Why is there no VueJS job requirements in my area? It is all about Angular and React. Quite sad my favorite JS Framework is not a favorite here.
Guess I'll be forced to study Angular or React for job requirements purposes only *sigh* 😩 It is like - forced eating the only available food that you don't like in order to survive. Oh well supply and demand.
I haven't seen any VueJS requirements yet in all the job posts that I browsed 😕11 -
I just had the first day of my new job, and I started it by putting my victoriously earned devrant stress ball on my desk. I waited a word about it the entire day... I guess imma have to introduce my coworkers to the awesome place devrant is 😁2

Recently I learned that the collective noun for a group of hedgehogs is an "array".
Possibly the only kind of array where we can all agree, you'd have to start counting it from 1.
Or I guess you could just name a pet hedgehog "Element Zero" if that's how you prefer your arrays2 -
Firefox quantum has shown us what is "back with a bang" called. 😈😈 #smoothasbutter #fastlikelight
I guess, I have praised it a lot ! 🙈🙊

A year since the Group Manager stepped into the position, 4 team leads have moved to other companies.
He is known to be politician/manipulative..
Guess what, Now there's a new Team Lead position and I was offered it.
It will be a step up for me, from senior engineer, and in other circumstances I would take the job in a heartbeat.
I guess it is not the time to step into leadership role.
What would you do?4 -
Mom: Why are you not using this laptop.
Me: I have to wipe it clean. Virus attack.
Next day....
Me: Mom why is my laptop smelling like washing detergent ??
Guess what happened.....:'(1 -
upside I guess, if your website's content is generated by JavaScript I'm too lazy to find an emulator to scrape it off you
granted I'm sure this website's business would've been much better had they made it scrapable since I'm quite literally trying to retrieve their capabilities listed in one of their help pages and give myself alerts when they gain new features
but no, I guess3 -
I thought it would be a good idea to name my dev blog after a common runtime exception. I started looking up un claimed domain names. I guess stackoverflow.com is taken. Next idea... indexOutOfBounds...?12
-
Aaarrgghhh! That piece of crap build system we use is acting again. Nobody touched it, nobody had time to replace it with something reasonable and now it starts not building as far as I can tell random parts of system. I guess it can sense we wanted to release :-/ So no time for any nice project and back to kicking its shit together :-(2

Is it just me, or do REST API's literally rule the world right now?
Feeling like I can automate the universe.
But this is a real question. Are there reasons to avoid using web API's rather than sending data through some kind of shared database? I guess I'm not even sure what the alternatives would be right now... Are there disadvantages I should know about?3 -
Fuck JavaScript!
Seriously, it's always like this:
> "Hey, look <module name> seem cool, let's try it!"
> Find a tutorial
> Tutorial is 3 to 6 months old
> Should be good
> Everything is deprecated
> Come on...
> Back to C I guess.
It's moving waayyyy to fast.
It's frustrating...19 -
Some people hate microsoft edge so much, even they only use it to download a browser. In fact i do that too. But then i download .pub file and its default application is edge. I guess edge now has a plus value. Since firefox does not support epub natively.
-
I am fresher at a MNC and my client is a some photocopy manufacturer. We provide Software development and supporting as well. On my first day I was literally did some Xerox copies my self and it was weird. And I told to my friends about it and the first thing they said is
Can you guess it ?
" Can you take 4 photo copies of my documents "
I was like " Well, now I became a Photocopy shop owner "1 -
I want legit data on how many times your second build attempt succeeded though you made absolutely no change from the previous build and sort of hope the compiler will be merciful this time around.
It is the part of the brain that still believes in supernatural stuffs I guess.9 -
Sooo after returning from my 3 weeks of vacation (student part-timer so no real obligations) I learned that the last two months of work refactoring our legacy app to conform to modern Android app standards, is being shut down because we begin to rewrite everything for cross platform...
Not sure how I feel about it, because I really liked Android development and I poured my heart in it... On the bright side: I'll get to learn more Javascript, HTML, css and polymer stuff which I guess is good.
It still stings a little 😥5 -
Does anyone have a mnemonic for x and y and which is which, on a graph? I feel like I have to look it up or guess every time. Some day a building is going to collapse because of one of my guesses.11
-
I hate developers that don’t apply logic to non programming concepts. Like when someone declares what they don’t want instead of what they want. For my sake just say what you want to see.
I’m thinking of an animal. Guess what it it is not. Congrats you probably won.
I’m thinking of an animal. Guess what it is. Sorry you probably got it wrong. -
So my computer is doing ok after becoming spastic over viruses. I did hardware and software cleaning. First time I did removing hardware parts but it worked it way better than expected with the static sensitive parts (I used a anti static wrist band). Congrats to myself I guess :)3
-
What the hell is wrong with recaptcha? It is solely there to be a nuisance, especially if I use a 2FA device. I do not fear hacking attempts against my username+password, because the 2FA will keep the lucky guess out.2
-
Why is it that I'm some able to get things working only after I make a guess complaining to technical support about how it's not working...
And it seems no one else has raised the issue.2 -
@dfox
I recently posted a rant containing the tag "$" (php, you know).
But if I search rants with the search pattern "$", the search returns no results.
I guess this has something todo with $ as a special character ;)
Is it a bug or is it a feature? *g*7 -
as someone who never worked in an office, or in a team, new term for me:
cowboying
I can guess what it means, but..
please, share... and elaborate
is this a new term?
I don't get to hear much office gossip... :)3 -
My current dev dream is to move away from JS based hybrid mobile development...
Guess I need to get back to learning Dart and Flutter hey? (: Because, well, fuck Cordova.. fuck it with `rusty-barge-pole.js`.2 -
What in the holy hell is a pointer to function and function pointer.I guess they have a purpose, I hate their existence. It's solely because it is complicated13

Who thought this was a good idea
oh well if they couldn't care to initialize the variable I GUESS WE'LL MAKE IT RANDOM
There is probably a reason for it... somewhere4 -
Forgot to add build.prop to ported rom. I guess, that is the problem why it is not booting up.. :/1
-
I really wish Emacs had better integration with Windows. Vim is a wonderful text editor, but it just doesn't do everything I used Emacs for. If it were my choice, I'd only use Linux for everything, but unfortunately I have to use other people's computers since my personal system's hard disk is borked, and it's really unfortunate how poorly it works even with Cygwin. Oh well, can't have it all I guess.2
-
fuck Fuck fuck FuCk fuck FuCK
the plague of receiving a 3rd idea while already coding 2 ideas simultaneously is fucking me up right now, and all 3 ideas are absolutely brilliant to the point that i cant reject them, i dont know how but i even immediately thought of the most perfect domain name for the 3rd idea and guess what IT IS AVAILABLE. WITH .COM1 -
Ok, im hired here as a frontender. Formally the designer did a bit of it. The site is shit. I want to fix everything about it basically. But, the thing is that we are working according to gitflow so someone has to check my code. But backend is like: thats frontend. And the designer is too busy and just wants to see the pixels. So who is check my PR’s now? Guess i’ll do it eventually... it’s going to test first anyway3
-
I can't believe this is happening... I'm coding something in PHP...
It's the only language the makes sense for this project really. I need something that can easily run Linux commands.. it needs a small footprint... and it needs to be something people are familiar with.
I feel sick thinking about it... just looking at frameworks was making me want to puke. Luckily I found one that was my style. MVC and it is TINY...
I guess my next issues is.. should this application be OS or should I make it proprietary to my Web hosting services?2 -
I am getting my first apartment next Saturday, and it's awesome. And I was thinking of buying a great desktop computer because my laptop is getting old and I want a real desk with a real modern computer, also as a symbol of my new life coming. It would have costs me around 1300€, but guess what, I just spent that yesterday to pay the real estate agency, the deposit, and the first rent for that apartment 😭 I guess I'll have to wait again for that new pc...10

Came to work at 9, it is now 3, I have done nothing thanks to React native project screwed up just because I updated one dependency ....
And guess who's dependency it is: Facebook!
How to solve issue, by guessing!
https://github.com/facebook/...1 -
Today I learned that PHP disables assertions by default on prod via:
zend.assertions = -1
Which means, it is running in "production mode". PHP then simply ignores all those pesky assertions, so your code can run superfast! 🤡
Guess how I found out... I'm sick to my stomach right now.9 -
Friend of mine during workshops yesterday:
F: "Shit, my copying is broken (ctrl c shortcut)"
Me: "stack overflow down and/or broken copy/paste - worst nightmare"
F: "oh it works again... For a moment there i was afraid im gonna loose my job..."
* I guess the comedy of situation doesn't translate well to rant, but still, it was funny * -
I've dreamt of building my own home automation system ever since we moved into this place. By the time I'll get around to it, I guess the home automation system I want is common shelfware.
-
Very vague and large question but: How do you become better in terms of software development / engineering?
For context my current job is pretty good but sometimes it lacks challenges, I’m interested in how people become better out of the work scope I guess.7 -
Working on a platform with very few users and developers kinda sucks. There is only like 5 forums about this platform and it has less than one than a 1000 threads. Stack overflow has nothing on it so that sucks. I am trying to fix this weird bug and I cannot find anything to fix it. Guess I will call it a feature.1
-
Why dose relocating a server have to be s pain, could be worse if it was a rack server I guess not a workstation case but still, drilling new holes and cat proofing it will be a pain lol
There is many downfalls to self hosting and most of my problems seem to be the home environment lol -
I thought i was being kinda layed off before my holidays. Truth is the workload is to busy right now to get rid of me. We’re 2 weeks of holidays further so things doesn’t seem as black as before but the chaos that started it all is back for sure. Ow well. Just have to learn to live with it i guess.
I did apply for functions elsewhere and already had a first interview. We’ll see how that turns out! -
Why am I like that....
All is good, there is ONE FUCKING request which is slow.
Why, why I'm searching it ? For fun I guess !4 -
Just spent 4 hours on a bug with Postgres in Node. Turns out when you create a new client, and then end it, You need to create a NEW client (I guess because the old one is bad??).
Thanks for the shitty error messages Postgres. I want 4 hours of my life back.1 -
I thought that if I work for a manager that is a developer as well, I would start getting deadlines that make sense for the project...
Well, now I know that it was just a thought.. guess that It doesn't exist2 -
Hey people. I am writing a script(not any computer's script, but just a simple dialogue-script) for an adventure game that I have been thinking of designing. But It's a dialogue based game , so i need someone with Fine grammar to edit it.(i guess it's kinda visible from this rant how aweful my English is )
I can't say it is open source ( kind of like my first amazing idea that i want to get recognized for ), but the thing is, i won't be earning from it and I will definitely give you an equal recognition for contribution.
Can anyone Help?6 -
If somebody wants to become famous for the work they do fast. Join DIY projects such as React-Native.
You can become so famous for developing a highly demanded component, since there arent many well maintained this days.
I guess it is the case for many new and fresh projects.
React is awesome and react-native is the beast for cross platform development! You gonna love it guys! Jump in! -
So the work from home is going like, I'm coding in dreams too. It's been more than 3 days, I have successfully completed more than one module😂
I guess it is happening with everyone. -
So i got another reason to hate windows.
During decrypting bitlocked external hard drive it got disconnected and guess what the partitions didn't showed up in windows and everytime i connected hard drive windows get stuck. I thought the drive and all data of about 300gb is gone. None of the softwares worked (Also tried diskpart to list disks but it got stuck too). After about a week i live booted linux distro and guess what hard drive is working perfectly in linux.
And decryption was also successful without interruption.
Linux never disappoints.2 -
Rant - When data loading stops and your manager's "preventive" solution is to "watch it so it doesn't happen again". I guess this is my role now...
-
When instead of propperly coding one ends up adding syntax highlighting to emacs for specific terms and just other fancy functions...
I mean hey, it is somewhat more readable now I guess. 🤷♀️
...
Guess I'm just distracted and aoiding the issue ^^' -
When I work from home, I probably spend less time working, but I do it seriously
When I work in the office I spend most of the time I would not actually work, pretending to work and probably time spent in actual work is much less
But I guess that better performances in work from home, do not feed automotive industry… -
I’m still thinking about doing one of my old idea, which is an infinite posting board. But I guess I have to ask the hard question: is it useful?
Please people let me know15 -
I know, it is unprofessional. I know, it is lacking comments and proper formatting. [...]
I was going through two old codebases of mine.
Here are two code snippets of them.
I find the frustruated comments amusing.
I guess that counts as self-sadistic behavior lol -
cleaning up resources in async tests in rust is... uhhh what the fuck honestly
just wat
wat
just forget about it I guess. ew.1 -
It's kind of depressing looking at how bad the source code has transformed from a previous project that I had planned, designed, and did the initial implementation.
But I guess this is the problem of having developers who don't really care about the quality of their work, especially when it comes to PHP. -
As this is as good a place as any to vent, I feel the need to proclaim that I've had to unsubscribe from /r/ProgrammerHumor on account of all the "volume control" jokes.
I am a patient man, but I simply cannot deal with monotony. It is the same fucking joke over and over again popping into my feeds.
Gonna give it a couple of months until it dies down.
Here on devrant, I guess I'll just have to downvote and trust in algo to save me2 -
I had to program a webservice in PHP (never touched it before). First of all, i get why this language is so much hated. Second i had to debug one function for 5h because of 'é' in my DB.... UTF8 FTW i guess.
Let's finish this by a pun
PHP is really a rich language. -
[semi-rant, kinda-story]
Day two: Managed to persuade IntelliJ IDEA into, uh, functioning.
Although it still does funky stuff like trying to force JDK v6 for bytecode compiled from Kotlin (the project's not even legacy spaghetti and JDK v6 isn't even installed).
Still had a few problems while setting up the rest of the local dev environment of the project I'm assigned to (which has been caused by documentation accidentally being followed in the wrong order, which I updated in turn, in order to prevent other people from doing the same mistake), but now I can finally work on tickets!
I love that not all tickets are marked as urgent or important, only a few!
Now the fun begins 😎2 -
Angular standalone migration breaks the project on the first step and I cannot find the culprit of the error. So it has to be done manually. Any other idea before doing all by hand? 😩
I guess nuking it all is also an option.1 -
Can someone explain Scrum to me, like everything, what it is, why it's used, why it's effective, cases where it isn't effective, what the roles are etc, I've tried to understand it online but to no avail (need a childish explanation I guess)14
-
Funny, I just said to myself "Of course, the developer does it right. anyone else doing it differently is simply wrong" on how to pronounce SQL.
Yet, when it comes to gif, I totally disregard the developer.
I guess I have to either start saying "djiff" or stop thinking that whoever invented something gets to decide it's pronunciation :D2 -
Emotional support thread - feel free to comment here if you've ever been in a conversation about .NET, .NET Core, .NET Standard, .NET Framework and someoneverysmart has declared that it is actually very straightforward and obvious and then proceeded to explain in a way that is neither straightforward nor obvious, or is even plain wrong.
Feel free to link them to this thread. I guess it is unlikely these folks have the requisite self awareness to get anything out of it, but it is worth a try.
Finally for anybody about to comment here to explain the differences, please read the above three times, try to get it into your skulls that this thread is more about empathy and awareness than it is about the differences in .NET versions; and then go ahead and explain here anyway becauese I guess it will be a good cautionary tale.4 -
Between me and my next cool job was a stupid quiz that I didn't think will contain "text book" material that I haven't cared about since I finished school, I understand that they need to filter applicants but seriously!
Anyway I guess it is time to read about all those interview and quiz questions as it cannot be deciding my future!2 -
Fuck Java. Why does the syntax have to always give me such a headache. It is a language where I know what I want to do, have a general idea of how to do it, and have no fucking clue what the syntax looks like.
My guess is that it all makes sense after 3 years of use. I don't want a Java job, I just want to pass my class. Fuck Java.5 -
Yeasterday I was making some changes in my database in sqldbm and I guess I forgot to change something, so when I logged in it was I an unsaved draft and if I would like to load it. Obviously I said yes!
Now I see every change I made yesterday is gone! FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK1 -

Goddamnit first day after vacation my alarm goes off, i turn it off and guess what
Correct i turned my dumb ass the fuck arround again and fell back asleep for another hour.
But it is kinda fine because i could still catch the next train after the one i normally take. -
Noticed a running process called geoclue. Wanted to kill it but xdg uses it. Went down the rabbit hole, and guess what? Flatpak is the mother of all dinosaurs. Busy enough that I can't care, but like... Really, flatpak? ReAlLy???1

This is how my macbook keybboard writes the letter "b" it’s not happening all the time though, sometimes it outputs b and and other times bb, wtf I only pressed it once. And it's happening randomly, fuck this shit, I cant even take it to apple customer service and leave it there for a week or more. I guess I'm living with it and don't bbother fixing it. fuck b errr6

My department head is shitposting in the company slack on the middle day of a 3 day weekend. I guess it doesn't really count as encouraging overtime because it's not work-related, but come on, does he really have nothing better to do?2
-
woow PHPStorm is such an incredibly buggy piece of shit .... how can anyone work with such a buggy IDE?
It randomly looses settings on restart. A lot of functionality is just so poorly tested. Anyone ever really tried to work with the integrated DB tool?
Or the CSV plugin? there are countless bugs in both usability and function-wise.
But I guess that's because it's just plugins ... you know .. you don't need to use them ...
Is the PHP code formatter a plugin too? Guess I don't have to use it at all, if it randomly scrambles whole lines if I format with a missing } or some other improper syntax. Right, overall it's my fault, right??
Fuck you PHPStorm, and you IntelliJ too. you're not better at all.12 -
Ok, im hired here as a frontender. Formally the designer did a bit of it. The site is shit. I want to fix everything about it basically. But, the thing is that we are working according to gitflow so someone has to check my code. But backend is like: thats frontend. And the designer is too busy and just wants to see the pixels. So who is checking my PR’s now? Guess i’ll do it eventually... it’s going to test first anyway2

I got lazy with my responsive site and iPadOS13 has come along to kick my ass.
It loads the iPad Pro 11” screen size but with a desktop user agent in safari.
Late night writing some ‘real’ css now.
I guess this is a rant at myself more than anything 🙉5 -
Google's fastboot driver is not working since windows' got updated to build 2004. so much time passed (i guess 2 years) but google still don't fix their sick driver and I think they didn't even fucking noticed it. that's all sorry I just wanted type these useless words

A friend of mine is looking for a note-/netbook to do some programming.
It shouldn't be too pricy (up to 500€ I guess)
Any suggestions?7 -
Why this happen the div's margin inside a div is overflow i read about it and i guess it margin collapse something like that ...How do i fix it??3
-
Budget cuts are being made and my boss doesn't like me so goodbye I guess to my 90k salary. It might not sound like a lot to y'all but it is to me.3
-
Completely fed up today, trying to investigate a memory leak using google chromes profiling tools, first of all all the "documentation" is well out of date so you have to pretty much guess your way through it.
Anyway i start to investigate and it looks like the JS Heap increases in size only after a garbage collection, surely this is the wrong way round or am i just being stupid2 -
I watched a few reviews for the new nvidia RTX 4070 Ti graphics card. One question on my mind is: why is it so huge?
⏺️4090 is huge -> ok I get it, 450W power is a lot of W
⏺️4080 is huge -> ok I guess, 320 W of power is a still a lot of W; although it should be considerably smaller than 4090 (but it is not? why)
⏺️4070 Ti is huge -> 3 slots size for this graphics card? What the actual hell? This card is rated just 285 W. It makes no sense
I do not get it. The only explanation I can find is that the manufacturer got so lazy they cannot be bothered to design 3 different cooling systems, so they reuse the same cooling system on all graphics cards. RIP4 -
Using API to get todays weather.
The value i get is 293.some other decimals.
Well, i guess i have to manipulate that float.
Converting it to string, moving the dot and convert it again to float so i can have the number in a form i need it, which is 29.decimals.
Hm...
Re reading the docs, and i find out the value is in Kelvin.
FUCKIN KELVIN
WHO THE FUCK USES KELVIN3 -
#define someError ( -1)
int func(params *param)
{
//some code
if(condition)
{
someError ;
}
}
Spent like half and hour on debugger thinking why the fuck does it skip my statement. My manager who was passing by saw me puzzled and asked if he could help, so we spent another 10 minutes without success(tho my manager is technical guy but he had an unlucky moment I guess). Eventually senior manager saw our wtf faces and asked what is going on, it took one question for me to light the bulb "someError is a macro right?"
I guess you can imagine my embarrassment at that moment..
PS: Forgot return keyword before the error code. -
“The point of making a native app is to make it faster and more reliable than the web version”
Well, I guess Facebook Messenger for Windows misses that point entirely.2 -
U see me with massive headphones on and i am not making any eye contact. That means something guess what it is ;) But u start talking anyway hoping me to stop whatever i am doing and get on to your thing. Life sucks.

*opens random website*
*Thinks for the 578th time* how the fuck is thjs website so blazing fast?!? Let me guess ITS BUILT IN NEXTJS RIGHT?
*Open view page source* and surely enough i see _next code in it
God fucking damn it. Is the future of web nextjs?
Very rarely see react. Rarely see angular. And i never see vue. Nextjs is all over the fucking place16 -
So apparently all you have to do to get mad kudos from a DocuSign API dev, is to implement an integration without contacting them for help...
Guess they don't trust their own documentation and I don't blame them, it is kinda bad. Tho it is a whole lot better than the other systems I've been working with lately...
Those have been nonexistent at best, completely wrong at other times... -
I created a WPF User Control similar I guess to the Android GridLayout.
It just automatically places a list of Controls into the next available cell... in a inner Grid control...
But what is so bad about this that it wasn't built into WPF in the first place? And is there actually a full implementation?
I Googled before writing this but don't think I found any existing ones.

Finally a bachelor first class honours(irish title)
Why is this a rant?
Because i passed on my second attempt on my development project because i was a lazy piece of shit.
I guess i learned out of it.1 -
Is there anyone who successfully booted gentoo in aarch64 mode on the rpi 3? I can't get it to work. It gets onto the rainbow square then it shuts down like there is no kernel I guess. Sorry for asking here but there must be someone here who's kind enough to help.2
-
Sometimes my video card decides to be a dick, it fails to boot and makes my mobo reset the bios.
I guess it is time for that 1070 i wanted to buy since it came out. -
A lot of the skills I use at work are actually learned on my own time. And a lot of the time, it feels like I trying to drag the team forward but everyone else does things that drag them, and thus me as well, backwards.
There's always work but most of it is low value and there's just less and less time to make things better because no one else has any opinion of how things should be...
Maybe I should just give up... Again....
I really need to find a better job or at least one without so much technical debt.
Feels like actually my PM is exactly like the name of in Phoenix Project... But I guess he'll never take any meaningful action.
But when I'm not sure what that is... Guess it really is hiring the right people and doing things right from the start, it at least fixing them immediately.
**END internal monologue and summary** -
So I finally gave up trying to get TypeScript ES6 modules to work. Back to CommonJS it is, because fuck me I guess. I mean it *did* work... Until I also had to use a commonjs module at which point tsc basically tells you to fuck off with that2

What is keeping you up at nights?
I'm not a coffee person. I can drink it and go to sleep :)
For me it's Pepsi. Fast shugar for energy, I guess. Strong green tea on 2nd place.3 -
Does wanting to leave a company simply because of legacy code with no documentation and too much work a bit reason? I guess it probably is as anywhere could have the same thing :) Maybe management would be better suited for me, time to take courses8
-
So I changed the language and keyboard layout on my windows machine and now it is stuck for 5 minutes after signing in, waiting for... something, before you can use it as usual. It's like I'm back in 1995. But at least I can use my new keyboard properly I guess.

I guess coding is a coping mechanism for not matching on any dating sites and hence no dates...
I guess you could say it helps me find alternative methods to release my per up desires... Although I guess a real relationship is something it can't replace... -
An undefined ArrayList coupled with NullPointerExceptions because of it really know how to raise your blood pressure up.
Spent almost 1 hour trying to figure out why and all I needed to do was look a couple lines above.
But I guess that's what 4am development is all about -
I kid you not, last night had a weird dream. In it, as I walked into my place my girlfriend came up to me with a smile and guess what.... She turned into a terminal.. With green fonts. The vividness of the dream is still fuzzing my mind.3

instant coffee isn't reeeeally instant, is it 🤔? I guess depends on when you start timing and whether time is continuous or stops at planck's constant or so1
-
I've been hearing about material design, and wanted to check up on it. Does it specify some good UI guidelines, or is it more JavaScript framework hipe?
Their website didn't load on my browser. I guess I know what it is now2 -
I just pulled an all-nighter for some homework for grad school with a good friend and now I have 2 deployments today. Guess I can come off my coffee hiatus because I need it! This day is going to long unlike my patience.

Fucking product manager...
Customer is struggeling with a feature implemented before I even joined the company. And he is absolutly correct. The logic is bullshit.
Guess what pm Said? Fuck Off, I Don't Care.
Damn fucking you. Should I Care? Is it one of our best customers? Is the feature financed by him? Are you bastard usually crawling in his ass?
Thanks that I'm on vacation for 2 weeks. I'm currious how they going to manage that.... -
I guess it has to be keybase. Keybase chat is now my go-to web based chat.
Using NaCl keys makes life so much easier but you have the choice of using PGP if you need to for encrypting files/text. -
"Google chrome is outdated because it hasn't been restarted for a while. An update will be applied if you restart Google chrome."
uhm.... Logic is something different, I guess? -
So I got the new macbook pro 15 with touchbar .... this is my first macbook that I have ‚issues‘ with.
* the new butterfly keaboard doesnt feel as good as the old one
* ... abd its friggin loud!
* the keyboard backlight just randomly drops out and forces me to cold reboot WTF??
* they bigger left/right cursor buttons make it so hard to feel where you are, that I constantly confuse up and down
* the touchbar is basically unusable for a keyboard centric person like me. It forces me too look down to the keys!
* I constantly hit the esc bc im used to have one finger there to hit it if needed, but now im forced to hover it bc otherwise it is pressed
* and why of fucking why did apple remove magsafe??? Now i dont even see anymore if is is being charged without turning the screen on
* i hate the usb ports too, why not even add a free usbc to usba port? (Well, i guess bc it would make the macbook even more expensive... free wouldnt be free anyway i guess)
It is way more powerful though, but the time i would buy a personal one is over and will probably never come back.
Im a happy hackintosh user btw 😅3 -
I brought my laptop on vacation, but I left my archiso USB drive at home, assuming I wouldn't break anything.
I broke networkmanager. I just added a connection, it worked flawlessly, but for some reason it is now a reason to stop booting. It enters emergency mode, but I can't type anything... Possibly because it doesn't have read/write access or something idk.
But how on Earth would this break my system??? I'm beginning to understand why some people dislike systemd sometimes...
I guess I'll fix it when I come home...6 -
That font in the new Gmail theme is fucking ugly and makes me blind
Wish we could use something else at work :\
I'm not a fan of mail apps but I guess it is time to use one after that update....6 -
RDS Proxy is quickly becoming my least favourite AWS offering.
I ranted about it a while back because I had to abandon it for a project because it doesn’t support clusters very well (it only proxys to the primary node).
Well I tried to use it again for a different project with only a single RW instance. Surely it will be ideal?
Nope. It doesn’t support Postgres 13. Only goes up to 12.
What the hell Amazon?
pgbouncer it is I guess. -
I am so habitual to handling unexpected behaviours in Android to avoid crashes that even in real life most of my conversation with my brother is like what if it happens.. he'll be like we'll see when it does... I'll be like why not handling now... And the conversation goes on and on...
I guess my mind is trained now to handle null crashes, even in real life.1 -
And why is symfony so fucking slow? Well I guess it has something to do with depending on code annotations for everything, or every simple task requiring a whole cloud of a thousand classes, stupid design decisions....I fucking hate symfony, piece of shit software
-
Google: "Your update is now live"
Me: "Excellent! Time to start working on that new feature. I guess it wouldn't hurt to make sure the new live update is working fine"
*uses new update*
*realises I have to fix something in the new live update* -
Hmm am learning mean stack.. so far it is good... But can anyone help me in reviewing my code. Like am doing self learning but I guess my code can be improved with better standards or approaches.. Just curious if can found any help here :)8

Follow-up of https://devrant.com/rants/2014517/...
It took me two days to finally get my discord bot to a specific voice channel in my guild/server. It turns out that there are two gateways and one https gateway. The https gateway, the main gateway with a websocket connection and a voice gateway (with udp I guess).
Guess that I will be able to let my bot speak at the end of this week.
The documentation of the Discord API is not so good. It contains examples that won't work even if correctly modified. That is why I joined the Discord API guild/server yesterday and they helped me find the solution to the "I get no response from the voice gateway".
It is only getting more complicated, but I love it. Maybe I love hurting myself lol.4 -
Listening to my project manager and he said
"is there a way of doing something to our <server update> so we surely cannot revert it and can proof it will take months more work if we need to revert it"
I guess he is done dealing with the capricious CEO4 -
Last week, I was stuck with an annoying bug. Come to work today, reverted back to the previous commit, started over and everything worked.
I guess this is (it was working on my machine)^(-1) -
I guess I'll soon have some fixing to do as my grandparents' PC just got ransomwared (is that even a verb? No? Well it is now) by the CryptXXX thingy (I think at least as they're files are encyrpted now, I haven't gotten a hands on yet)2

Guess I shoulda paid attention to that hunch I had on Saturday that it was time to finally reinforce the center of this weak table. This is what I came home to after going out for exercise. Wife wasn't happy because it landed on her foot. :(

The biggest drawback to QObject is you cannot template a class that inherits from QObject. It is an fucking pain in the ass. I have more work arounds and boiler plate because of that crap. I end up with code that if I find in the wild I would say: "wtf is this shit?" I end up composing stuff just to make it work together without coupling too hard. I guess if it works it works. If one of you cunts ends up working on this code I will apologize right now. But I won't be sorry one bit.1
-
Wow I just thought I had lost my good old friend forever - my laptop did not want to turn non anymore and since the main fan is somewhat broken, I thought I'd never see him alive anymore and that he died from overheating thus I opened it, plugged it to the power connector and voila, it works again - whew, that was a shocking moment for me and I guess it's finally time to replace that fan.7

What are some other cool jobs I can do in tech besides code?
I am hating development and the mass confusion.
backbone.radio is a node
package but ALSO and actual application for internet radio like real radio.
Is in the backbone.js documentation...NO!
It on the marionette documentation which is built on backbone.
Guess what’s hard to search for?
Fuck it man😵9 -
I now realize after binging for 3 days that Prime Video is a lost cause.... The time wasted is just not worth it... And my watchlist. I have about 270 movies that I at least need to preview and isn't going to get smaller... Especially if I'm "trying to get my money worth"
Quite frankly it takes the fun out of watching movies... At least for me.
My first annual subscription will end in 2 months. I guess I'll miss the prime shipping but guess I'll go back to grouping orders... Hopefully won't need it though.1 -
Has anybody here worked recently with Talend Open Studio? am I the only one who find it incredible tedious? I feel like every task is like filling a government form by hand. I've desperately searched for a Talend Hate Group and nothing, I can't be the only one.....
I guess this is a mix of Rant/Question.
Thanks5 -
I have Ubuntu 16.10 installed on my laptop...guess how painful is it to install new packages :/ I should really add reinstall to newer version to my to-do list.4
-
For weeks the excitement had been going about the Eclipse, I guess because they don't know what it is like... I had the luck for one project, I don't think I want to see it again... 😧🙃😏
-
Is there a reason sales people and managers think the request of, "The user would like a report" is at all helpful. I guess I will just write them a report that prints report on it.
-
What do you think about the new Youtube layout?
New Youtube, new bugs.
I reported a bug when it was opt-in and guess what, it's still here: in subscription feed's listed view, scrolling is laggy after loading more items with stepless scrolling (e.g. Chrome w/ touchpad). So many unnecessary animations.
It's just really frustrating when you try to info large company about a bug and they do nothing. The previous ones are also still there...
I guess it's time to reboot my Youtube Data API client project, which I started just for this reason.3 -
After a long week of meetings for facilitation and making sure everyone else is good, it always ends like this... "Guess I will code that this weekend." 😫😫😫
-
Whelp, I guess it just one of those days. Keep making stupid mistakes at work. On the plus side my boss is really understanding and hasn't given me a bollocking.1
-
I actually prefer doing my code when it is sunny out. Guess it just gives me the feeling of there being a whole day to learn and develop code. I would prefer doing it at a library/coffee shop/school because I like being around people.
-
As my plan A for education/training failed horribly around two years ago(as it turns out, you can be too big for fun rides like commercial airliners), and as it is my currently working plan B, i guess it gave me new opportunities and will hopefully help me afford food in the near future. It also made me a lot more cynical, but i do not know if there is a distinct connection between coding and cynicism.
-
In your opinion, is it a good decision to migrate on freelancing on blockchain development as a fullstack web developer, by a financial point of view? I guess there is an increasing request and income for blockchain-based projects.5
-
Why has nobody at Microsoft thought of implementing optional parameters for functions in SQL Server? I guess backward compatibility is something they haven't heard of. I mean hell, Postgres can do it easily.2
-
Just got an email that Datree is closing shop. That's too bad, I considered it a mandatory production k8s tool.
I guess I'll have to whip up some Frankenstein replacement with Open Policy Agent... -
We all know that writing your own css is easy.
Then we just try to pick up other's code and continue with their style...
It's taking so much time, I guess it's about collaboration now not only trying to figure it out alone .. -
Anyone herr tried API Platform?
I know I know. Generic ass name but that is what the framework is called.
Its in php, it contains a lot of goodies from(try and guess...no?? Ok I'll tell ya) the Symfony platform(go figure right) so if you are familiar with Laravel or well....Symfony then I guess that you will be good to go. I ain't...so fuck me because I only know Laravel.
Either way the concepts are very simple. Configs is donde almost entirely with YAML, i dunno how to feel about that, not used at writing routes on yaml, but the framework is thus far quite powerful. About to test jwt auth so wish me luck!4
