Teaching 7-8 year olds the basics of web design. We're we're playing with CSS and changing colours of block elements and text. One girl put up her hand, completely confused as to why it wasn't working. Her code:

I bought a System76 laptop. They're headquartered in the same city where I live. In the "special instructions" section of the checkout process, I put, "I'm buying this because Apple took away my escape key."
This note came today.18 -
I use BitBucket, not GitHub, but I can't add it to my profile because the repo section only accepts GitHub.10

Hey everyone! @trogus and I are headed to TechDay New York tomorrow (May 10) and there will be a devRant booth in the social network section. If any devRanters are attending, you should definitely stop by our booth! There will be free swag and we’d love to meet some fellow ranters!37

YouTube: tapping like 1px out of the like button, obviously you want to reply to the comment
Facebook: let's just remove the like button altogether, only exposing it to the comment section
DevRant: let's make it possible to double-tap anywhere on the post to upvote it
Only one of them did things the right way 🤨8 -
FUCK YOUR OPEN SPACE OFFICE!!!!
AND FUCK YOUR HOT DESKING!!!
As a developer, is it too much to ask for a quiet section? 😭13 -
I found that pornhub has a feedback section...
This man (wanting white theme) was totally rekt.

I did a little website where people can make reservations. I made an administration section where my client can create a reservation and delete them.
But every day damn I have this conversation. EVERY DAY between 9am and 10am:
My client to me: Can I ask you a question?
Me: Yes?
Client: [the question]
Me: Open the documentation i wrote for you.8 -
Real Story:
Manager: You have to add an extra section in the app to show more details.
Me: We are already showing so many unnecessary details. These changes are not required.
Manager: No !! You have to do it.
Me : Ok !!! So why can't we show it in the section where we are showing the other details. Why make a separate section for it.
Manager : No !! It won't be clearly visible to the user. Just do it.
So I added another section to show useless information that we are already showing it f**king everywhere else in the app.
So I released a new apk next day with the added features.
In meeting, our CTO goes through the app and ask manager....
" Why we have added an extra section for showing same details that we are showing everywhere else ???
Who approved this ?? This is nonsense !!! "
Here comes the fun part.
Manager : I don't know. I didn't ask for it. These changes were not there earlier.
And ask me.
"Who told you to make these changes ? "
I am like... F***k man you a***ole told me to do it even when i told you it will be nonsense.12 -

To all dutch people on here, the new surveillance law I ranted about a month or something ago has passed if my source is correct.
Passed as in, the government has voted in favor.
Time to start encrypting/vpn'ing/torring and securing your computers!
Feel free to use this rant's comment section as Q/A and tips section for this subject as well :)39 -

In my recent rant I told that I will go to an programming challange (or so) in Bonn, Germany.
Today my boss told me I can go if I present the competition to all other bosses in our department + I will be a participant in the "innovation section" of our department. YESS FUCKING YESSSSSSS
I could get fucking promoted jeeeeeeeeeeeee7 -
I just opened the Q&A section of SoloLearn and well I almost cried.
I think I’ve seen enough to run away 😂
Are people really this misinformed of things?8 -
Manager: How’s the progress coming along?
Dev: The section of code I’m working with is one of the more difficult ones so it’s a little slow
Manager: Ok well I didn’t write that section of the code
Dev: I’m not saying you did I’m just giving you the status update that you asked for
Manager: Ok well I can’t really do anything about that so how about you tell me something I can do something about instead of just complaining about code THAT I DIDN’T EVEN WRITE!! *Marks self as offline*
Dev: …10 -
While using open source library if you get stuck, head over to library's issues section on GitHub. Paste minimal error, you will definitely find an answer. Always works.

I love the skill requirements section of a junior Dev job advertisement.
To summarise "Basically you'll need all the skills and experience of a senior, but we are gonna pay you much much less". 😔1 -
WTF?! Do I look like your personal Google assistant or amazon alexa?!
You messaged me to call the customer support for some doubt you have. Why can't you do it yourself?!
I then sent you a FAQ section from the website covering all the required details.
And you couldn't even bother to open the link to check there?!!!
Fuck off.3 -
I wish you needed at least 500++ to post images or in the joke section.
What's with all these new people just reposting memes?!12 -
Not really a rant but I'm just happy so I must share it.
Two days ago I uploaded a new project on github and today when I woke up I saw it on github trending! Only the C# section though, but still.
Feels weird as I'm usually not upload anything and the ones I have usually sit around 5-20 stars forever.3 -

YouTube. I used to love it a lot but now I don't recognize it. It pushes its agenda everywhere only certain content becoming popular. And regular people don't have much of a way for getting noticed unless they're in an extremely niche section. It's gone the way of the TV and I don't think it's coming back barring a massive internal restructuring.2

So when I was working for a web dev shop, one of the clients asked us to have a drop down of all the different combinations you can have for street types to appear on the address form of their shopping cart. So stuff like "Street", "St", "Drive", "Dr", "Lane", "Ln" etc. We told the client that it wasn't possible since the possible combinations and how some street don't all end with a type.
But the client was adamant about having this so we ended up building a section in the administration section to allow the client to add any new street type to a database table that will populate the dropdown.1 -
I love when people post a piece of their code here and got ranted for bad practices then posts "haha i was kidding, i would never do this" on the comment section.
I mean, we can learn here to, you're not suposed to be right 100% of the time, stop been so arrogant :/2 -
A very rudimentary bedroom project management system. Each note is a different section of the program I'm working on.
I do this at night to make extra money, so it's not exactly the best system. It works though.

Everytime a rant about a tech problem appears, most of you try to be supporting and helpful in the comments section.
Thank you for beeing nice to people who suffer from work related pain.3 -
Some of the best mentoring has actually been from the devRant community on how not to get burned out as a developer.
Take it section by section. Don’t spend a lot of time on one part. Work on it for a bit then move on to a new part and so on.
Thanks devRant Community -

No I'm not overreacting. He acts like this all the time.2 -
Worst documentation I've seen?
Our "Coding Standards" 20+ page document. The team who put it together got so detailed, there wasn't much 'wiggle room' for natural deviations in a developer's coding style. For example, a section devoted to no abbreviations. So if you had a variable 'invoiceId', they complained you violated 'standards', even though 'invoiceId' matched a field name in a database table. Using Dapper or another ORM that relied on the 1:1 name match? Nope, you were still forced to inject your own mappers so the code didn't violate standards.
As you can probably guess, such a long, detailed document would have contradictions. I pointed out one of the contradictions. Example:
Page 5: Section B, sub-section B-5, paragraph 3 : "To minimize network traffic, when querying the database, request all the data necessary for the application."
Page 8: Section K, sub-section K-2, paragraph 4 : "For maximum performance, when querying the database, request only the most minimum amount of data necessary for the application ."
In a review I pointed out this contradiction (there were several more)
Me: "If we satisfy A, one could say the code is in violation of B. Which is it?"
<Pointy-Hair-Boss throws his pencil on the table>
PHB: "WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM WITH STANDARDS! It couldn't be more clear! We are a company of standards because without standards <blah blah..straw man argument..blah blah>"
<deciding not to die on that hill, I move on>
Me: "On page 12, paragraph 9 code is in violation if a method has more than 3 parameters. That seems a little restrictive given our interaction with 3rd party products."
PHB: "There you go again. As stated in the document, ALL code used by the company will comply to our standards. What part of 'ALL' do you not understand?"
Was he bluffing about requiring 3rd party vendors complying with our standards? Heck no. That's a story for another day.10 -
Idk if people noticed but Snapchat CEO allegedly said that he doesn't want to expand in poor countries like India and Spain.

When you haven't bought the item yet but just want to inquire about it, give it a low rating. 'coz that's how the product reviews section works.2

Is it too much to ask for companies in the current world to be.. oh I don't know.. honest and consistent?
If you advertise on your Job section: "We always give our candidates feedback, whether they got the job or not". Then, *****, give them feedback! I applied and they never got back to me. And no, that's not feedback.6 -
A colleague of mine got a ticket today from a customer. The customer complained that the website visitors would need to many clicks to see the news on the site and that the news section is kinda hidden. We were quite confused because there is no news section on the website. After looking around for an hour we saw that the customer used the FAQ page to also include news by simply putting [NEWS] in front of the caption.4

When you release a mobile framework, here is what should be in the tutorial:
How to do api calls
How to switch screens
How to handle hardware sensors
What are hidden away in an obscure last page on the flutter site? All of the above. The api section just straight up fucking points to a dart page. Good fucking job.11 -

@dfox just throwing a suggestion out there. How about creating a weekly tips section in which everyone could share useful insight about different tehnologies/OS/languages? Or even create topics in which people could share such things?2

Features suggestions:
1. When we type @ in the comment section it'll be nice to have autosuggest of users as we type. This will help not closing the comment and checking the spelling again and again.
2. Search available on basis of tags. Type in a tag you want to search about and get all rants/questions with that tag.14 -

A big project in my company. Had some annoying race condition that caused data to get deleted when two processes finished in the wrong order they hit the dB and override each other’s work.
Long story short. Fixed the bug and in the process the codebase shrunk by 60%. I didn’t have to delete the rest of the code, but the bug was due to a function in the legacy section of the code, and found out that it was the only function used in that section.
So I deleted it. Rewrote the function so it upserts. And bam. Smaller, cleaner code :)1 -
So one of my coworkers is making a tutorial on how to use a terminal, and he has a section on exiting vim, he must be a god, he can exit vim 😂

Currently reading through a long GitHub issue thread. For some reason people started quoting the entire message they are replying to.
The last post has 9 nested messages and the quote section is 1600 pixels tall. Who needs @mentions anyways.5 -
When its saturday morning and you're on a bridge because the migration is still failing 34 hours in and the PM mentioned the vendor doc that he 'trimmed for your benefit' and replaced with his terrible doc, and you beat the original out of him and basically read off the section title "Exactly the error you got and the steps to prevent and resolve" and section 2 "big bold red letters explaining how to avoid it" and you instafix it. #wherewereyouonthursday

first off, i think this may be out of scope but either way.
i think along the rants, a tag seperated section for programmer tips could be pretty neat :)
i'll start off, my tip of today would be: if it seems too complex, it probably is.
consider refactoring by splitting into multiple smaller parts or even its own seperate API. :) -
DevRant-Stats Site Update:
Future projections & Live General Section
Added some future projections like SocialBlade, where you can see your score in the future, according to the stats in the last 30 days. Therefore it will only be available after storing the stats for 30 days.
Also made the complete "General" section live now, and replaced "Live Score" with "Devrant++ Member since".
So now the values are updating every second! (Using EventStream so not working in Edge Browser lol idc)
Have fun!
Feedback is appreciated!23 -
Hey, fellow devranters, there is a major update to the devBanner project, but before releasing it, we (or I) would like to ask you, fellow devranters, a question, or a simple poll.
Do you think white font is better in yellow bg? Or should we change to black font?
Leave your opinion !!!!

Thanks!24 -

@dfox suggestion, when I'm in the "Top Rants" section, can it be able to swipe left or right to change the tabs Day, Week, Month, All. It would be more efficient to see other rants 😉3

DevRant-Stats Site Update:
Made some changes.
After a long time with no updates, I decided to finish up my DevRant-Stats Project and do all of my Todos.
First, I added a way to request adding a user if he is not found. (Just search for your name, wait, then click "OK")
So even non-DevRant++ are now able to see their stats.
I also added @dfox and @trogus, though there is not a lot of interesting data yet...
Second, I added a "Details" section and changed the "Other" section a bit. For example I'm using an image for "Latest Rant" and other stuff.

Just check it out!

I find it bizarre that streaming services have a "skip intro/recap" button and clearly marks a segment in a film/show worthy of forgetting but will keep it in your "continue watching" section if you leave during the credits.
Surely you would mark this as complete if the identifiable segments exist?1 -
Unicode's biggest problem is that it isn't a streamable format. Given a section of a Unicode string, it's impossible to assert that the next character won't be an accent or zwj or other modifier. This means that it's impossible to convert stdin into an iterator over canonicalized Unicode graphemes.12

Wouldn't it be kinda cool to have a project section in devRant? Like the collab section but for projects that are finished/work in progress. I'd love to see what people here make and it would be a great way for people to get exposure and feedback on their work.

When your technical skills section starts to look like a a node_modules directory, it’s time to edit.
-
The documentation for the matplotlib python library is terrible for newbies.
There is a "Tutorial" section, but the thing doesn't even explain what you can do until you get to the 4th section!
It starts off with some confusing examples, how to change the appearance and only at section 4 do you actually start to get an introduction to the different components you might want to use...
At some point you finally realize, most of the stuff that is shown can be omitted because the .pyplot module is all you need. -
It turns out 1200+ comments on a rant breaks devRant, I can't load the comments section anymore without the app crashing.

On a other note, where did the block feature go?6 -
Don't you love writing a novel, get to a section introducing some of the higher up main characters and you can only remember 3 of the 8 names... Yeah me too 😃🔫

Just gave up 10GB++ on my Mac for MS Office. Survived with Drive for the first 4 weeks of uni until yesterday, a lecturer bombarded us with announcements in MS Word format. Did I just wake up in 2005??
(p.s. the same lecturer used to work for Intel
p.p.s. there is a separate announcement section with automatic email blast)3 -
Wordpress :(
This is some production code of a completely butchered Wordpress site I have been forced to work on (the previous developer managed to break the site so the archives section failed to work).
Words literally fail me.1 -
Saw TV recently, just by accident, for about 5 secs. It was "Coming Up..." section of one channel. And the first title there was "PROTOTYPE THIS". As javascript dev, I shat pretty much after seeing these two words together, they are kinda following me.

Client: wow! I really love the simplicity of this site. I have a few requests though. Can we add a popup of a picture whenever someone hovers over a link, I want to add 2 more colors, I want that one section to grow and shrink when someone hovers......
Me:........... 😐🔫 -

Question from my front end developer. "Where does the testimonial link go to?"
*facepalm* how dense do you have to be. Idk let's have it go to some section, on the same page even, that is called the testimonials section. A page you built.
Some days I wonder about people. -
So I was looking at ups's on amazon and I scrolled down to the questions section and someone asked "Would this computer be good to host a game server?" I honestly have no words😂

*le me being frustrated af trying to compile asm.
.section won't work for fasm. And some other things won't work for Nasm.
Now I got the .obj aka .o from the .asm. But ldrdf.exe from the nasm compiler isn't working properly. And I can't find a troubleshoot online. Seems like this will be a sleepless night...2 -
In good news today: my donut 🍩 looked abit like the surprized picachu meme.
In the sad news section: theres mostly meetings and bad micro management.3 -
Web developers, how long does it take for you to make a responsive web page?
Let's say the page is a fancy one with lots of images and gradients and buttons and wavy section dividers with little to no consistency.
It's been 2 days and I'm still far from completing one.15 -
That moment where you find how to do it in the docs
But you had passed that section 3-4 6 times
But you had already formulated your own fix
And you have to redo that code block -
Pushed out a big update that included restructuring every directory. No one had access to the admin section. Yeah needless to say my boss was not happy since no one could do any work. Turned out during the process I made every admin page need the highest level of authorization which only the owner has. Easy fix but stressful day for sure
-
Ah a Monday rant. How wonderful a day.
I cleared a project with my boss how dynamic each section on a frontpage should be. This and this needs to be dynamic on each page load. All in the beginning of the project.
Now in the end, he changes his opinion by writing to me in Slack. "Remember, that this section needs to automatically draw X from this other page."
Now I have to redo it, since I made it as static content since that is what was asked of me. Now he blames me for why I never did it correctly in the first place.
Kms. -
A big old Fuck off to Instagram posts saying 'comment "AWESOME" word by word in the comment section, its impossible'
How do these even get suggested when I don't even like any of their posts, their ML is bad.8 -
Well I was going to be productive today, but instead my partner (same project, but different section within said project) decided to question the entire premise on which the project is built, so now I have to explain why we're doing what we're doing.
Again.1 -
I just crave to start an open-source project. It's just that I don't feel like doing it alone. Anywone up for doin' something stupid? I have a few silly ideas in mind 😅

(Oh, right. Didn't feel like posting this over at the collab section. Felt to vague.)7 -
How the fuck do you get over 10k points on stackoverflow? Are these people actually developing and pursuing a job or are they just F5ing in the questions news section?
Recently I tried to get some upvotes on answers, but there was not one decent question in one hour which would have gotten me more then 1-2 upvotes.2 -

Can we have a section for real question and answers?
oh wait, there's stack overflow for that.

Am I the only one who hates that Slack has added a new `Drafts` section?
Like WHY TF? On one hand, I'm having some important work talk, and then I realize that I cannot see my boss's chat anymore and then I have to always look up and see the horrible Drafts section.
Although it is becoming second nature after a million times, I just don't like this feature at all.
IS THIS THE BEGINNING OF THE END?7 -
Received insider information about my magazine. Two possible things cab happen tomorrow:
- I wake up tomorrow and we go through our first meeting of the year (general meeting happen three times a year) and everything is fine
- I wake up tomorrow as the new editor for my section but at the cost of my closest friend leaving the magazine.2 -

I'm finished with university for this year, so I can finally dedicate all my time to work and personal projects. Knowing that I can do whatever I want because I won't have to wake up at 7am... I feel GREAT! Now it's 4am, I just finished a section of a project, and I don't feel tired at all. FUCK YES! -
Is it just me or is the Collab section gone from the Bar.
Seems to view Collabs now, need to uncheck all other categories which is a bit annoying?10 -
Finally got around to turning the news-section generator markdown / deno thingy into a GitHub Action!

What is your opinion on Agile?
I was studying through my textbook for a test tomorrow and the Agile Philosophy section sounded like a Team Rocket manifesto at some parts:
Responding to change over following a plan
Individuals and Interactions over processes and tooks
Working software over comprehensive documentation
Customer collaboration over contract negotiation.4 -
Hello Team, Good morning.
Yesterday I was working on posting a quality rant but couldn't come up with something good. I browsed around other people's rants and started shit-posting in their comment section. I also put multiple hits on the ++ button on funny comments.
Today I will continue on coming up with a quality rant. No blockers, thank you. Rest of the day, I will be browsing other ranter's rants and mess around in their comment section.
Let me know if anyone needs something from me and feel free to reach out.
Thank You.7 -
I find it interesting that most of the devRant profiles I look at only put the languages they know in the skills section, not the things they do with those languages.
Why is that?5 -
How sad that I am here to vent and see other people's rants and I keep looking for a section to ask about issues we face and rant about. It never ends!
-
Figured I would post this here, rather than the rant section. Just wanted to say hello! I think this community is awesome, and I am excited to be a part of it!2
-
Am I the only one who will spend half an hour reading through the "top all-time rants" section of devRant to figure out why they're so popular? I just can't shake that feeling that there's some sort of pattern there that I can optimize...
Guess I must be a developer, given that last statement :D3 -
1) Read the ticket.
2) Create a branch with ticket number in name.
3) Move ticket to Working now section.
4) Make some changes according to the ticket.
5) Commit changes to branch. Than pull it.
6) Create pull request and submit it.
7) Move ticket into In review section.
8) Move to another ticket.
Tickets:
#7 - Change background size in product item.
#8 - Add icon to info flash message.
#9 - Add adaptiveHeight parameter to the slick slider.
Done, now another 30 tickets...
Yep, this is my workflow i'm forced to now.2 -
I'm not proud to admit that I was searching for the stories section just to notice that I haven't even updated the app.. Silly me 😅

slider with 3 images that runs automatically

Is there any open / close source application that allows creating browser-based tutorials where the left side would have instructions and the right side section would have terminal to execute the code from the tutorial.
There would be a back-end server to execute the command from terminal and send back the result.
Here is the representative screen-shot:3 -
Dear ranters,
Keep in mind that while ranting on a topic the human mind's ability to write a long sentence with perfect wording will decrease slightly, so my sincere request to Grammar NaZi's is Fuck off bro..
Itd be great if there is a section where some posts can be pinned so that everyone would see them.6 -

The time tracking app used at my company was created with Angular JS. Most functionality is quite fast so I can understand why they wanted to go this route. Unfortunately, the clock in section takes forever to load during peak traffic times... which is the only time that functionality is used. Someone found an older section of the site written with server side tech. Now everyone just bypasses the Angular clock in and uses the old one.
You shouldn't use tech for the sake of using it, it should also perform better than what it's replacing.1 -

Since some people that start programming post some doubts here regarding what topics learn. Shouldn't it be good idea for newbies (people that are beginners in computer science/engineering) to have a section, so people can help then?1

Ok, probably a really dumb question.
I'm trying out Docky, and I really like it. Buuut... for some reason when I maximize windows, it leaves a section for the toolbar and just displays the bottom part of the wallpaper under the part it's not using.
How can I change this, or can I not?2 -

looking for suggestions for a self hosted CMS. I tried Ghost, and it looks real nice, but there's no option to have just 1 section be private, you can only make the whole thing private. I tried Drupal but honestly it's just way too complicated for what I need, and doesn't look very aesthetically pleasing.
basically, here's the features I'm looking for:
- ability to set privacy/access control on a per-page or per-section basis
- Markdown for content editing
- ability to use regular HTML when needed
- ability to upload content via an API (so that I can publish documentation via my gitlab CI)4 -
