A true story... sad but true
2.00AM ->> git commit -m "it's time to sleep"
2.45AM ->> git commit -m "I can't sleep, fixed the UI issue"3 -
Since past two-three years, Indian Government has been organizing a Hackathon called Smart India Hackathon for college students. And Luckily our team was selected this year.
This team had 5 Electronics Student and 1 Computer Student. Guess who the Computer Student was? Yea, Me.
They Knew nothing about Android Development. And the idea was about an Android Development. I was the only person who could code.
The centre for our hackathon was Varanasi and we live in Hyderabad. So we had to go there. I have not really travelled a lot in the trains (especially not this far from Hyderabad to Varanasi ). During the whole 37 hours journey, I was not able to sleep cause I am not accustomed to sleeping on a train.
The moment we reached Varanasi the hackathon had started which was 36 hours long. Normally team members switch places so that they can sleep but not ours. Cause I was the only one coding and it had to be done in this 36 hours. So add this up 36+36 hours of no sleep, I must have rarely slept for 3-4 hours in that 72 hours.
After the hackathon, I slept like a Snorlax whereas the other went for a trip around Varanasi ('_')18 -
C'mon guys! 80 hours, 70 hours, 40 hours... Are you humans or fucking robots?
Once I stayed awake 36 hours helped by energy drinks and I could barely remember my name.
I can't really imagine how somebody could write useful code with such a huge sleep deprivation.14 -
The programmer who killed people: Not so talented programmer named John, made a mistake in his code. because of this mistake the program users spent 15 minutes to do a workaround. this program had 10 million users. In general the users spent 150 million minutes because of john's mistake, which is 2.5 million hours. if a person sleeps about 8 hours a day, he have 16 active hours. which means john wasted 156,250 human days that equals to 427.8 human years. people leave approx. until the age of 64, that means John just killed 6.68 people because of his bug. So john, how do you sleep at night?10
-
Started Computer Science class yesterday, but i code like 12 years. My fellow mates mostly never coded in their life. They think its gonna be easy. They think they will have a social life. They think their gonna get sleep.
Those fools.11 -
Me - okay mom im going to sleep don't bother me.
Mom - okay goodnight sweet heart.
Me - *puts on headphone , have a cup of coffee and begin to code*13 -
Is "sleep-coding" a thing? Fell asleep last night on accident with my phone in my hand. When I woke up, I had typed a few lines of code in my sleep.17
-
Fuck you fucking piece of self taught shit. Self taught my ass you dont even know how to use git or how to use modern IDE. You dont even know how to use debugger. You dont read other peoples code because you are an arrogant kid who thinks that everybody elses code is trash. Yet after couple days when you need to work on your own code you usually rewrite entire fucking thing because of how fucked up your spaghetti implementations are. Even worse you dont even know fucking english so documentation is useless to you unless I dumb down everything for you and spoon feed you like a 5 year old. Motherfucker you cant even stick to a proper work schedule, you go to sleep at 7am and wake up at 18.00 and I have to fucking work overtime because Im blocked by your spaghetti code. Fuck you fucking self taught arrogant piece of shit who never ever worked as a dev profesionally yet you have the nerve to feel cocky.28

Biggest hurdle for me is living with Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder. A neurological disease which affects the way my body makes melatoline. Basicly I have a set wake/sleep pattern which is extremely hard to deviate from. My sleeptime is 7am and wake up time 4pm.
I worked for 8 years forcing myself to be at the office at 9am because thats the social norm. Got 2 burnouts due to being sleepdeprived, various other issues and whatnot.
Finally discovered whats wrong with my body 3 years ago and found a awesome job at a company where I develop very complex systems which communicate with various stock exchanges.
Best part is that I work on my own and have the deal that I work about 3 to 5 hours a day on site. Then I go home have dinner, do some netflix and chill with the misses and after that I have the whole night just for me. When the world is asleep I am writing code, developing a complex system with NOBODY around me who can annoy me!
For me, this is the biggest hurdle I've overcome.12 -
I had been trying to fix a bug for the whole day, I decided to sleep for a while. During my sleep, I dreamt I was working on the code and I fixed the issue. I woke up, tried what I did in my dream and it Worked! I was so confused and happy17
-
I code through the night until 8 am, then sleep until 6pm+.
My family then calls me out as being unproductive and lazy.
Why must the whole world be oriented against night owls like me? 😥15 -
6:00 pm, no spirit to code,
11:00 pm, no spirit to code,
0:00 am, i might sleep in early tonight,
1:00 am, just one function,
2:00 am, I'm A God.1 -
Don't you love when you spend the whole night trying to find the cause of an elusive bug, then you give up, you go to sleep, and the next morning after only 30s of looking at the code you finally find it and fix it?2
-
When your brain only functions at night and morning meetings with your team make you look like you never coded in your life.1
-
I’ve been a teacher and have dated nurses but being a programmer you will never sleep at night fml .4
-
Can't fall asleep because of unfinished code...
Wake up at 03:00 AM because of nightmares about bad code...
Too tired to finish code or rewrite bad code :'(7 -
After Hours of Coding.. I'm finally get in bed, but my mind can't overcome from fucking code and i can't sleep.
I don't know how to take proper and quick sleep after programming without taking any pills. Another side effect is after started programming 18 hr /day I'm losing my memory power, and can't remember some things properly.
And yes this image is Worth something to me... It describes my current situation.
Just one word
HELP !19 -
Fucking kill me right now please. How the FUCK am I supposed to get any shit done when I'm learning something and the fucking DOCUMENTATION has been UNAVAILABLE for the past THREE MOTHERFUCKING DAYS.
GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER MICROSOFT.
Fucking idiots.
It wouldn't be so fucking bad if things like this didn't happen all the time.
But when EVERYTHING is FUCKED - ALL THE TIME, it kinda makes a person lose all hope in humanity and technology.
A typical motherfucking day for me:
Wake up
Go to work
Come home
Eat dinner (if I remember)
Attempt to code shit for 1 - 3 hours before I have to sleep
CAN'T FUCKING CODE SHIT BECAUSE:
1. Internet disconnects every 5 fucking minutes
2. DOCUMENTATION SITES ARE FUCKING DOWN
3. Shit Windows is UPDATING
4. a previous windows UPDATE has royally motherFUCKED my PC
5. etc
FUCK14 -
Ever been stuck in a bug, you sleep it off, dreamed of the code to fix it and you woke up, tried it, and it worked??7
-
Week 26 advice - you all probably know this but good to refresh!
Eat healthily
Sleep well
Document clearly
Annotate your code
Use version control properly
Keep yourself in check with project management tools
Your peers are your friends... And competition.
As much as your boss is an idiot respect them and your life will be easier.
With great power comes great responsibility; don't touch that keyboard until you think through what you are doing chances are your first idea is not the best.
Don't write quick fixes and say you will go back to clean it up later on when you have time. That time will never come.3 -
This morning I kept falling back asleep after the alarm went off, drifting in and out of a dream about programming.
My wife finally said "no more sleeping".
Still mostly sleep, I replied very confidently "you can't sleep in a sandbox!".
I was dreaming I was in a code sandbox. Obviously sleeping is not allowed.
Jeez, my head has been really full of programming since this conference. (One of the talks was on codesandbox). -
Lately I've been losing sleep dreaming about how to fix my code, but client I have been praying hard to make you happy 😜😜3
-
Had 4-5 hours of sleep last night because I had to wake up early this morning for an internal demo of the feature I worked on. It was scheduled early morning because the boss was busy.
I come to the office looking like a zombie, practically sleep walking my way to the office, and guess what... The app server is down! Yay.
I had to reschedule it to right in the middle of lunch time because hey... The boss is busy. Now everyone in the team hates me for ruining their lunch.
Now I'm sitting here, staring at my code, remembering the sweet luxury of sleep.2 -
Sunday morning... Guess what? I'm at the FUCKING airport why you ask? Because I need to fly somewhere to school the stupid customer how to use our fucking app.
Instead I could sleep in my warm bed. Or write some code also in my warm bed. WHYYYYYYYY??!?!8 -
My friend at my office tell me what he did everyday
6.00 am wakeup
6.10 am code while showering (using phone)
8.00 am make a coffee
8.05 am start code
12.00 pm eating lunch
12.10 pm start code
5.00 pm go to home
5.30 pm pickup a phone and do a some socmed
6.00 pm eating
6.10 pm code in pc
11.00 pm sleep
He did that everyday. Im shocked he can code like that. Then i ask him why. He tell me that he loves code so much, everytime he found an error he find a way to solve it and he said it was fun so he cant stop code
I think my boss has brainwashed him :/11 -
1. Put headphones
2. Put videogame OST (Chrono Trigger is the best)
3. Start Atom
4. Sacrifice a male virgin to my Code Muse to replenish her mana stock
5. Jerk off seeing a fat granny midget porn
6. Clorophorm and put my coworker to sleep so he doesn't interrupt me to show the FailArm best fails of 2016
7. Atom is still loading, so I curse all the GitHub fuckers
8. Give up and start my emulator to play Chrono Trigger
9. Receive a pull request and realise I need to work and be a productive member of society
10. Goto 110 -
I've become a night worker. To put it mildly, it's become mildly annoying. I start studying/writing code at night and before I know it, it's morning. I can't seem to stop. I then end up feeling weak and sleepy during the day when I need to be awake. If I'm lucky, I get a few hours of sleep during the day. And then at night, it happens all over again. I need to fix this.7
-
So a few months ago I started dating. I love my girlfriend with all my heart, but something has been bothering me a bit. I can no longer easily do my day-to-day work. Whereas previously I would be productive at any time I want, now it's more of a "I can work whenever she wants to work". It's hard to balance and even harder to actually get to it.
Previously I would stay with her during the day, and then wake up in the night to do all the household chores, learn her language and if I can get to it, even improve some of my shitty code. Needless to say, she didn't like that I didn't sleep with her and it's not exactly healthy either - I barely slept at all.
How do you balance work/relationship without throwing sleep time in the mix? Both work and girlfriend are at home for me.7 -
Try pair programming! I've never had an official pair programming session, but I'll be damned if my best code and quickest solutions didn't come from having a bitch session with my coworker. Just having to talk it out or having that second set of eyes can work wonders. Plus you have a built-in de-stressing outlet to help you sleep at night.3
-
Broken app is broken again. This app is broken so often and so hard, I'm struggling to give a damn.
These fuckers need to take their shitty project, code and managers especially, and launch them into Mars
They blame us and everyone else for their shit and I'm done with it. I need to sleep and not have these fools call me at all fucking hours.6 -
I had a dream last night about how to fix a bug in my code.
I couldn't sleep the rest of the night because I was too excited about fixing it.
Plus side: the fix worked this morning.
Down side: ive drank so much coffee I can smell color5 -
while me.alive() {
devrant();
eat();
devrant();
sleep();
devrant();
code();
devrant();
}
Anyone else like that here...17 -
Apparently I finished 89% of a course yesterday night by only watching 2 minutes of it.
Turns out I fell asleep after the 2 minutes into, since I was already in bed and the phone kept on playing and my sleep cells covered 89% of it.5 -
"Sleep" is the last frontier in high performance computing. Is your code still slow? Just Sleep™, and you'll have your results instantly*.
* Speed benefits apply only to the sleeper. Sleep is not a solution for immediate deadlines.3 -
Dreamt I was writing code for work last night, pretty sketchy stuff. But then at some point I woke up, and in my daze panicked thinking that I'd actually written that code. So when I fell back asleep, dream me was working on fixing all the issues that I actually had never writen. Woke up again, worried about if I had left everything well, and realized my stupidity.
I need some days off... 📴2 -
Time flies, one minute you're starting a project at 11PM and finally ready to sleep...at 5.45AM
You know that feeling when you're "on the zone"2 -
Anyone else find the eat sleep code hacker / soylent chugging caffeine energized all nighter coder beast idea immature? I run into people who think that those ideals are what makes a good engineer and it irks me. Maybe I'm just too judging.6
-
Met colleague at work
Him: You programmers don't like sleeping at all. You should try to sleep and look fresh like me ... Blah blah blah... (You get the picture)
Me: *just smiles and watch him go*
(But what I really wanted to say)
Me: 'Well you know what, most programmers don't sleep much not because sleep deprivation is fun or we're in some kind of cult where it's some daily ritual. But when they need to send in an update; usually on a feature to make YOUR life easier OR just can't seem get their code to run right, and they keep telling themselves; "5 more minutes", "I have a good feeling about this modification" the minutes add up and before you realize it morning! And that's why some of us look like s*** in the morning'
(And then turn around to leave only to come back really quick like I just remembered something)
Me (again): "And don't think that we enjoy it. At least the ones I know don't. It's simply a fr****** work hazard!"5 -
FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK
I HAVE A TEST TOMORROW AT 8 AM AND I'VE BEEN TRYING TO SLEEP SINCE 12.30 AM. IT'S 6 AM ALREADY, 6 AM!
I guess when they no screens before sleeping they really mean it. I'm fucked, I'm really fucked. I guess I'll stare the ceiling until the alam goes off and accept an awful day and hope I get pumped up during the test or something. Fuck me. I want to fucking SLEEP. Fuck.
I just wanted to install vivaldi before sleeping and watch the last rick and morty episode. Does that fucking make me a fucking night owl? No. I could've use these precious time learning or writing code, or even sleeping, but fuck! I'm stuck here in time, just waiting for fucks sake!
Good night...
OR That's what I WOULD say if I could sleep...16 -
My boss just asked me to participate in a conference call to help an external senior dev implement some stuff/tool into our website.
My boss suspects that he doesn't even know Git...
Let's see how that whole thing will turn out.
My boss told me that he looked at his code and it already looks like an abomination of PHP...
It is enough that my boss usually writes shitty spaghetty code.
I will not sleep well this night.1 -
Manager: Morning Alex, how are you?
My Brain: I'm fan-fucking-tastic, I've had 1 hour of sleep, hurt my back, feels like my tail bone is broken, struggling to walk, every piece of code I've written for the past 3 day's has been a complete waste of time and I'm at work...
Me actually: Good thanks .-.3 -
Did you fucking idiots think that I was gonna tell you to implement async await on the requests and not notice that you IMPLWMENTED GODDAMN SYSTEM-SLEEP YOU DESNE MOTHERFUCKEDS IT NOT TAKES 10X AS LONG AS MY OATCH TO JUST LIMIT THE NUMBER IF HTTP REQUESTS FOR FUCJS SAKE THIS CODE LOONS LIKE A RACCOON FUCKED AN MACBOOK THAT ALSO GOT FUCKED BY A GOAT FROM CHERNOBYL THAT SOMEHOW MUTATED TO A RACCOON GOAT 🐐 MACBOOK 💻 HYBRID ABOMINATION THAT IS NOW CLAWING MY EYES OUT AND GIVING ME RABIESCANCERAIDS5
-
Annoying thing happened at work as usual -> can't get the mood to code -> procrastinate -> finally get my shit together -> get some work done -> shit it's 07.00 PM I should be going home already -> still coding because I started late -> shit it's 09.00 PM -> get the fuck home -> I need time to be alone and relieve stress by surfing the web -> shit it's 02.00 AM -> try to get some sleep -> Why did she left me? How's dad doing? God I think I that function that I coded today is awful, gotta fix it tomorrow. Am I going to afford a house EVER? Fuck what I'm doing with my life. -> Shit it's 05.00 AM, I MUST SLEEP. -> (kinda sleep) -> Fuck it's 10.00 shit shit shit shit -> arrive at work -> I'm not ready to open the code -> procrastinate -> ...4

So we're working on a few initial apps for a hackercamp and finetuning the OS. We've been coding for like 17-18 hours trying to finish this off without a day 1 patch on the event itself, when someone starts swearing like a sailor. We walk past him take a look at his code and see that he's started an array at 3 instead of 0. He's one of the more experienced members on the team so this is a lack of sleep bug rather than a not knowing. To this day whenever someone makes an array error in their code someone always shouts "Arrays start at 3 right"!
Maybe not the most satisfying bugs but man is it funny as hell. -
Not on call. 2 hours of sleep, get a call. Ask if primary on call got called... all my coworkers are fixing shit. Why is everything down? I'm tired and need my sleep.2
-
Am I the only one? When you pushing hard in the night, to finish some code; after you done, thinking to sleep, then your stomach reminds you - there's something called eating.3
-
when you're dead tired but can't fall asleep until you figure out this piece of code. then once you figure it out, you're so pumped you can't sleep. fml. catching up on devrant it is then2

!dev,
I have a baby. He doesnt like sleeping. He has GERD (reflux).
He rarely sleep more than 2 hours at a time (probably 1 a week).
The best he has ever slept in his 11month of living was 5 hours. That day he was sick and he ended up in hospital.
All good, he is still alive and well.
But he goes down at 7pm and wakes every 2 hours if not less.
Somestimes he is easy to put down and thongs are bearable, but many times it can take up to 30-45 minutes to out him down.
I dev during the day but i am longing to have nights where i can completly concrntrate. But my partner has been survivjng on broken sleep for about a year now.
She lets me have longer stretches but i either stay up late and havr to feed the baby and jiggle him, which breaks concentration and has pbliged me to get an extra desk and screento be put into an uncomfortable place so i could code at home (my orfice is a rent out 10msquare batch in the garden).
Or sometimes i just get up at 3 or 4am so that he can sleep on me 2eme i can jiggle him when he wakes.
I cant deal with being woken every 2 hours. I throw tantrums like im a 7 year old.
Ive rarely had such a sucking life quality as now.
Its a good things babies a cute i tell you that!!!!6 -
Today I have spent 2 hours trying o figure out why my code wasn't executing at all.
It was a typo.
"assFields" instead of "addFields".
I need sleep.5 -
Didn't sleep well.. now i'm constantly phasing out in front of my editor.
I just looked 5 mins straight at the word "readonly" until I came back to life and completely lost track of what I was doing.
Going to sleep a bit now..:D -
When it's 5AM, you had zero sleep and your deadline is in 3 hours: Oh loard my saviour php, please - PLEASE just let my peace of shit code work for once. *reloads page*
Error message appears. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCK!3 -
OK, so I was making this website for a university event. After publishing it, I start getting calls that the registration form isn't working. So I review the code and fix the problem. But when I push it to production, the problem still persists, all this while the event management is breathing down my neck because they can't get any registration! kept on trying for the whole fucking day, switched off my phone and went to sleep! The next morning, I find out, I had been pushing the old version of the file! Yes! I felt incompetent and stupid!2
-
*squirming in bed*
If it ain't broke don't fix it.. If it ain't broke don-WHAT THE FUCK IS "payment.needed2"??
Calm down, it's just some bad code but it works, you didn't write it, it's not your probl-WHY THE FUCK DO THE IF STATEMENTS HAVE SO MANY DUPLICATED LINES??
Sleep. Just sleep. -
Be careful when you go down the rabbit hole of creating custom observables (rxJS).
I wasted half a day just to find out that there are hot and cold observables and that the whole time I tried to use the wrong one.
It finally works. 01:00 in the morning.
My boss will be proud when he pulls the changes and the code looks completely fucked up (clean, well structured code, but he doesn't really know observables).
Now something different: Sleep. Cya. -
I'm torn between waking up early so I can have time for myself to study/code to get a better job, and getting enough sleep. I end up getting neither.3
-
Today I decided sleep earlier and not to code late night , But when I checked time It was 12.20AM. And after that I was just checking rant, It's 1.00 AM now..☺😁2
-
I see loads of students here.. and loads of freelancers and startup joiners.. all varieties...but one.. Anyone has a 'normal' 9-5 or sth (dev) work? Does that even exist?! Anyone stands up when the 8h are up and can leave the work behind?
I can't.. even when I leave the office I have algos & code stuck in my head..trying to solve the problem I worked on..
How do you handle non dev life? Is there anything left in a day?
I usually work monday-friday on avg 9h/day and have no idea how to manage not being fucked up at the end of the week. :\ I am trying to get back climbing, but usually I am just soooooo tiiiiireeeeeed after work.. I wanna sleep but when I close my eyes I see the code.. at least one core still left working..19 -
The worst part has to be you always compromise on your health just because your brain is telling you to solve a code block. You ignore your basic necessities, resulted in irregular patterns of sleep, skipping food and so much more.
Trying to maintain code which was written long back and alot of it has deprecated.
Yes you need to sit your ass down and write the whole thing again. -
Visual Studio Code and the Edge browser , so I'm finally trying a new browser and an IDE after years and I can't begin to explain how good of a job M$ has done on these software ... they deserve some applause atleast for now , their browser is pretty darn fast and has a dark theme! The IDE was exactly what I dream of in my sleep (figure of speech) .
Simply amazing , claps to them unless they have some hidden monetization scheme that will come forth over time .9 -
I've been sitting and staring at my code for two hours.
Actual work done - nil
This has been going on since three days now.
Tying not to panic. It has happened before. This phase should end in the next couple of days....
Don't panic please.
I don't think I'll be able to sleep tonight...3 -
Coming up on a year as a junior dev, nobody told me about the vicious cycle of the more I learn the more I want to keep learning. I would rather code than do lots of stuff I used to love doing. And the lack of sleep, oh the lack of sleep. Best career ever!1
-
Learned a new word here in devRant: sleep code.
Code that's is written where you hardly can get an eye open.
Crazy shit 😵
Edit: Yeah, I count sleep code as one word (or phrase if this will satisfy you before commenting)11 -
Staying up late night and sacrifice on sleep to complete the task at hand. A good night's sleep will result in good quality code.1
-
* How I solve a problem*
"Okay, it seems to be interesting, OK think solve it generally"
*Solved the problem manually
"Okay pseudo code is /do this and that/ break it and write Algo.
Seems like it will work,
Making all sense
Okay let's code"
*Wrote in IDE
" Hmm compile and execute"
*Expected output : Hey you!
*Actual output : F you!
Me: What the hell
"Uhh! Just gonna apply brute force"
*Somehow got the actual output = expected output
"I knew, it gonna solve it but how it worked?"
*Thinking
*Thinking....
*Thinking and it's 2 am
"Oh! I'm done, I'm going to sleep"
*4 am, while lucid dreaming
"That's how that thing worked, I got it"
*Relieved
*Next day using the logic dreamt of
*No matter how much surreal it is
*It didn't work
Me : F U!!!

(to be continued)2 -
Can we talk about something? I can't be the only one...
Code dreams.
What are they? You either sleep poorly, lightly, or not at all and continually repeat nonsensical code that you would otherwise KNOW is wrong when awake, (and it may even be a problem you already solved!) but for some reason your brain just wants you to mull over it over and over again.
I've been free of them for quite some time, but it happened now the past two nights. Drives me fucking nuts.17 -
My best code review experience?
Company hired a new department manager and one of his duties was to get familiar with the code base, so he started rounds of code reviews.
We had our own coding standards (naming, indentation, etc..etc) and for the most part, all of our code would pass those standards 100%.
One review of my code was particularly brutal. I though it was perfect. In-line documentation, indentation, followed naming standards..everything. 'Tom' kept wanting to know the 'Why?'
Tom: 'This method where it validates the amount must be under 30. Why 30? Why is it hard-coded and not a parameter?'
<skip what it seemed like 50 more 'Why...?' questions>
Me: "I don't remember. I wrote that 2 years ago."
Tom: "I don't care if you wrote it yesterday. I have pages of code I want you to verify the values and answer 'Why?' to all of them. Look at this one..."
'Tom' was a bit of a hard-ass, but wow, did I learn A LOT. Coding standards are nice, but he explained understanding the 'What' is what we are paid for. Coders can do the "What" in their sleep. Good developers can read and understand code regardless of a coding standard and the mediocre developers use standards as a crutch (or worse, used as a weapon against others). Great developers understand the 'Why?'.
Now I ask 'Why?' a lot. Gotten my fair share of "I'm gonna punch you in the face" looks during a code review, but being able to answer the 'Why?' solidifies the team with the goals of the project.3 -
After alot of 24, no sleep, and lots if coding I went full Jack Bauer on my code. Shouting, "where's the bug!? Where is the bug!?"3
-
1 am, wide awake,
I want to go code but cannot take,
for time is not my friend,
If I go now, it will not end.
Rest is needed, sleep must be,
or tomorrow I will pay the fee,
concentration will be sparse,
and boss will surely kick my arse.2 -
Goodbye, a night of work!
I just typed "rm * .sh.*" instead of "rm *.sh.*" for deleting the logs from a bunch of qsubs. Yes, I removed the logs... as well as the rest of the files in the folder.
Now, probably because of the lack of sleep, I'm laughing to keep myself from crying.
No more code for today!7 -
I really can't focus on anything else when there's an unfinished assignment or a deadline approaching.. I debug in my sleep and daydream in public transport thinking about all the things I'll have to code later.
I hate it because I'm ignoring all my loved ones during days like these and it always backfires on me somehow. However, I can't help myself - I am always stressing out..3 -
So... I was in bed going to sleep 5 minutes ago... I just had a thought I have no idea from where...
My dreams are controlled by code source files...
Change source files, I will have different dream....
Guess I spent a good amount of time with source files today 😅😅8 -
He couldn't sleep for 2 days because he missed her.
I couldn't sleep for 4 days because I missed a stupid ";" in my code. 😟 -
Dear Santa,
Here are a couple of things I want for Christmas.
1. I do want to eat no more so allow for oxygen to be my food.
2. Allow me to never sleep again or be tired.
3. Allow all my programs & code to work on the first try.
4. Allow all my hacks to work too.
5. X-Ray vision
6. xx.xxx.xx.xx6 -
Wrote a small code to test my "Reset Password" feature, service console kept printing: User not found and returns 404
I was 100% I added that user manually to the database....
Well it turned out I added that user to the wrong database. I need to sleep T_T -

Condition : Deadlines in 7 Hours. Submit on Class
MyClassmate : "Have you done the last Assignment?"
Me : "Technically Speaking, yes, i've done that in Python, since we need to use C, i need to Translate it first"
MC : "Can you teach me?"
Me : "I wouldn't say i won't, but it's 1 AM, time is short, need to sleep, I can give you the python code tho"
MC : "wait, so you will submit the python code without Translating it first?"
Me : "Of course not, i can translate it less than 30 minutes, i'll finish and submit it before class"
MC : "can you translate it now, so you can email that to me at <his email address>, so i can sleep now and we can submit it together this morning"
Me : "i can't tell you are serious or not, anyway, see you in class"

In the first few months that I took coding seriously, I used to see a feature in some android apps that I really liked and wanted to do. One night in my sleep, I don't know how, but dreamed about it's solution and how to achieve it. So I snapped out of sleep at 2 am and started working on it. I finished it at around 5 am, but I was too exited and happy to go back to sleep, so I kept adding things to it and expanding it until 8 am, when I had to go to work. And at work I had to code until 5 pm, although we had one hour for food and resting. That was the longest I coded!1
-
Finally finished my new app Deep Sleep Fan for iOS. Took 3x as long as I thought it would to develop even though it used a shared code base. Check it out at https://itunes.apple.com/app/...
Now I can go to bed.3 -
Everyone needs a personal code.
Mine is:
While(Alive)

Code();
Debug();
FapIMeanWorkout();
Sleep();

"Yeah. I don't only design, but I can also code, just like you."

I hate my freelancer life.
1. No weekends
2. No particular time to close
3. Work for 12 to 14 hours without sleep sometimes
4. Keep explaining the dumb clients about how development is not wordpress.
Its all fucked up. I have no life.
My average Lines of code this month is around 700 LOC/day. Whereas the average that showed on internet is 100 LOC/day.
I have choosen a hellish life.10 -
So a team of 3 went to a hackathon. One of us didn't know how to code, the other just front end and I back end.
So we started with some ideas and choose one, starting to code it.
After we were about 80 precent into it at the end of day 2 (the event had 3 days) one of the coaches came to us, saying our idea is already a launched startup out there and we had to have a change of idea at the beginning of the third day.
Other two completed the simple front-end of the new idea about 7am and went to sleep.
And I, while was awake for 50 hours already, had to code backend of a minipay app from scratch in 10 hours.
That was HARD for a newbie like me, but in the end I did it.
We didn't win anything. But that was a really great experience for me. Plus coffee was provided infinitely there ;)4 -

I have not slept in 28 hours.
I discovered Quantum computing, pubo and simulators.
I FEEL it can solve my business problem, but it is fucking time consuming to write this code. (In a good way).
I do not need sleep at this point, I need answers!
Anyone with good links to either pubo examples or a useful quantum algorithm, I’ll take it ! (not the random number… I have already run that on a real QPU 9Still no idea how much that run cost in $)!)31 -
It’s almost 2am, I cant sleep, I have an early morning class that I’ve already skipped twice this week, but I just can’t make myself fall asleep... I’ve been switching from devRant to Facebook to instagram for like 3 hours just to have something to do.
Thinking about just getting up, making tea, and working on some code to at least be more productive with my time
But I have sleepy-brain and idk if I am even capable of coding right now15 -
I need to delay execution of code in a for loop, how do I do that?
PHP: Sleep(3000)
Javascript:
const waitFor = (ms) => new Promise(r => setTimeout(r, ms))
const asyncForEach = (array, callback) => {
for (let index = 0; index < array.length; index++) {
await callback(array[index], index, array)
}
}
const start = async () => {
await asyncForEach([1, 2, 3], async (num) => {
await waitFor(50)
console.log(num)
})
console.log('Done')
}
start()
Fuck you Javascript17 -
So I had been debugging this code for the past 2.5 days without much sleep and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work.. Turns out I was passing the wrong variable to a method -_-
On the bright side, while debugging I was able to optimise the code and now it runs waaay faster 😎
Now, time to go into hibernation 😴1 -

Actual line of code I wrote in my code because of sleep need... Coffe isnt always good, kids... Rather sleep polyphasically2 -
fuck this!
spent an hour trying get my website working (on a raspberry) ... no errors, dev tools gave nothing, php gives nothing mySQL related... weird.. debugged my code for an hour when it me... db on my pc for testing is not the same one as the "production" server. i am so fucking stupid... i need some sleep3 -
Last night, while under the full belief that I could write a very simple lisp interpreter, I was awake until stupid o'clock and to my credit I got the tokenizer working and produces an output of parsed code. It's really basic but I was pleased to have gotten anything correctly parsed at that time.
But I'm also sitting outside my apartment waiting for a locksmith because lack of sleep left me unprepared to function correctly today and I'm now locked out...
Well done me! -
Went to bed last night with my code not working. Woke up, ran the app and IT WORKED! I have no clue what I did last night it's all a blur, but apparently I fixed the problem in my sleep. #SleepCoder2

Was on a trip, a holiday of sorts but there was a conference. Turns out alcohol and no sleep turns me into not only a master of code but negotiations as well. Woke up to find all of my work (that I had been procrastinating for about a week) was all done, my contract was extended and I got accept for a higher hourly rate.
ps: I had to redo most of it. Drunk me is not someone you wanna pair program with. -
You wrote a little simple and clean mvc framework to work faster on some new projects. It can "compile" tags as {% var %} or {% array.key %} in the html code with support of {% for arrayOfHash in hash %} foreach construct and nice features, it can call api's callback in a smart way as ghost methods of a class, he can make routes with the route provider. You tested it and made a little example, after you went in the bathroom you read the index code and you started staring at the beauty and elegance of it. You go to bed happy and sleep. The day after you wake up and realize that it's unuseful because there's a lot of mvc framework that surely are better and ready to use, so you lost useful time. Have you ever feel this way? "I am the code of my program
HTML is my body and CSS my blood
I have created over a thousand websites
Unknown to Google,
Nor to hosters.
Have withstood sleep to create many websites

That moment when you spend hours debugging, only to realize... the bug wasn’t in your code but in your brain. Yup, I initialized the variable outside the loop and wondered why it wasn't updating. Classic me.
Moral of the story: Sleep is not optional, fellow devs. Also, coffee isn’t a fix for stupidity, but hey, it keeps us going! ☕3 -
Todays rant is about me trying to add some long text into my database. I tried it all day long, but the text was inserted partially all the time. I changed the collumns data type to BLOB, this felt false, but it seemed to work. The bad feeling triggered me to search further, so I rewrote my code and found the source of this behavior. I used utf8-decode-function on my text and that triggered some problems when inserting the text. I don't completely understand it, but I solved the mystery, that fucked up the day. I will sleep good now.

after staring my stupid code for 10 mins, the facepalm. Better even before this my program went into infinite loop cause i had initialized a counter and if(counter<10) WITHOUT INCREMENTING IT. Its 1 am i should sleep.2

Literally removing the sleep(10);
Nah jokes aside, reworking my entire code from scratch based on what I drew up on a board.

Stopped coding for 5 months.
For 5 months I didn't forget my name, my age, how to sleep and the fact I live every second.
Fortunately, now I code again. -
I solved this bug today just to get good sleep at night by not brainstorming every solution.
Here I am thinking about the different scenarios to test my code!!I think I'll sleep peacefully tomorrow!! -

I can't work
I can't sleep
I can't eat
I can't code
I can't go have fun
I can't have a conversation

It's been 9 days already and it's still exciting, probably even more. I think that means it might be worth going ahead and realising it.6 -
I've seen lots of other ranters complain about huge code files... I just came across 27k Javascript extension for a software like Postman ...
First I thought cool I can work on it since it's JS, then 27k of lines later: I think I'll go sleep .-. -
I am currently working on a project with a team of 5. I like working at night. After committing my code, I sleep at 6. My team on waking up decides to change the UI and I have to start over again. The irony is: None of them are working with me on the frontend! Feels like I am stuck on a while(true) loop.2

When you feel like you are getting so much stuff done, that you don't want to stop!!!

I never liked Facebook. I only use it to get posts from the pages on architecture. Yeah, i wanted to be an architect 😅. But after a week of getting into coding, i flipping fell in love with this too. After, i found devrant, i thank god that it exists. Facebook is for people ranting about what their relatives are liking or hating or what, people they don't know, are doing. That's not real. What you guys, the community so wonderful rants about everyday, is the real stuff. I love devrant. I love to code.

There are a couple of things I like to do before sitting down to code for the first time on a project. Throughout all of this I'm (sometimes unconsciously) planning out the project.
- Clean the house;
- Buy groceries;
- Buy/prepare food & eat;
- Arrange everything on my desk so that everything looks slick as fuck;
- Actually sit down to do something;
- Realize it's past midnight;
- Go to sleep.
Sometimes I wonder if I have OCD...3 -
Damn it, it's 3am and I just confused myself with my own code, and edited the wrong file AAARGH
Probably time to get some sleep...2 -
I'm a young dev with ADD. Basically I just need to stay up late, and then get myself to hyperfocus on my code. It typically gets done in time to get a decent night's sleep.1

My biggest programming pet peeve: The code throws a series of unchecked assignment errors and yet it compiles.
Go home Intellij you need some sleep.7 -
Any body goes through a phase where they feel unmotivated to work?
Normally, I’m the kind of person that work a lot and even code on side projects during the weekend. For the past 2 weeks+, I feel unmotivated and just want to eat, shower, Netflix and sleep.
I’m certain I’m not depressed but I don’t know if I am burnt-out though.
Anybody had similar experience?7 -
The real problem it is that i can write lines of code and build algorithm in a fastest way in the late night.
Meanwhile in the afternoon I just wanna eat pizza and sleep on the sofa.5 -
I lack inspiration to practice my c++ and it's infuriating, the result is no code written in over a week.
I have extremely high expectations for myself and right now I lose sleep, sanity and any little self esteem I had in me regarding my progress
I know you can't rush knowledge, but I just want to built something at my level of practice that is somewhat useful to me and / or others, but when I do it, it's either shit or someone my level made it way better even if I really put some efforts in it
I won't quit but jesus this just feels awful.5 -
Your UI doesn't render as expected...
You blame RecyclerView...
You blame ConstraintsLayout...
You even blame f**king ImageView...
Turn out the culprit was VectorDrawable...
You try to blame VectorDrawable but your inner self knows that it's your lack of proper knowledge of VectorDrawable....
You feel sad...
You push your code to git and go to sleep.1 -

Mornings. Not just the run of the mill “I’m not a morning person” but I legitimately would be more productive if I could work night shift. It’s easier to think at night, and easier to sleep during the day. Not just a night owl, but it’s hard to breathe laying down at night sometimes. Sometimes I randomly can’t sleep. I’ve never had this trouble during the day during the occasions I get to sleep for long periods during the day. The morning is prime sleeping time IMO. Not wanting to wake up is one reason, but the changing weather helps and it just feels right.
I also don’t feel awake til the afternoon usually. Even if I get enough sleep and coffee. Code churns slow in the a.m.
I dream of night time being work time with long, restful naps durning the day. I feel more creative at night, and it’s easier to focus. There’s less thought of “oh it’s a nice day I should do x”
Just sucks that it’s not largely accepted and there’s not enough other night hawks to hang out with on my off days. And my work won’t let me do such a schedule. Everyone is an insufferable morning person.
Early to bed early to rise is a load of shit. We should be allowed to sleep at times it makes us happy.3 -
It has been a while since my last tale. I think it was about me starting a bootcamp...
Well, a lot of things happen since that:
• I did the bootcamp: three months of code-sleep-code, but now I know a bunch of new stuff.
• I gained my passion/love for develop again.
• Made new friends.
• IDK how became the CTO of a startup (which failed, shame, but I did learn a lot of new stuff again. Plus it wont failed because of the tech side (damn business not doing his business part...)) for about 6 months.
• And next week I will start at a new job (yaaay, income again!): they give me a nice 2k laptop, work from home if I want, nice salary...
So, I think I am ok.
PD: Sry if something I write is wrong, english is not my native language. -
that moment when you can only code at midnight.. and come to office in the morning just to sleep and yawn~

I fucking hate webpack and frontend development so fucking much, why do I have to see my site not loading the bundled JS code on production but being absolutely fine in dev? is like watching my mom being run by a car over and over and over while I try to remember how it all was before she gets run over, FUCKING STOP WEBPACK, I havent sleep but just 4 hours since yesterday, I NEED YOU TO WORK JUST AS YOU DID IN DEV WITHOUT THE PERKS OF HMR FFS, JUST FUCKING DO IT2

Hey Devs!
How you are doing?
I am here after 2-3 months. I had health issues then my TL cum Friend suggested to do a trip because we are on work from home too. So went on 15 days trip too.. It was worth it.
But again back to normal life as usual.. Code sleep repeat!!1 -
Sometimes you do 1 hour of work everyday for 2 months and spend the rest of the days memeing away. Some other times you gotta turn off all the chat apps, put on the headphone, and code for 3 days straight, only stop for some food, sleep, and coffee.1

There's a comment I left on a code review on Friday that I have absolutely zero recollection of even looking at the review. On the upside, apparently I did work in my sleep..? It's something that was discussed in today's stand-up...

Recently bought an Adafruit Industries board which controls stepper motors over i2c. It has a Phython library, but my code is in C++. Decided to convert the Python code to C++ to get started quickly. Behold the magic line that made everything work:
std::this_thread::sleep_for(std::chrono::milliseconds(10));
I can't believe Python's ridiculous performance is being harnessed to let the field generated by electromagnets in a stepper motor to grow to sufficient proportions to affect movement. Without the said sleep(), the stepper motor just vibrates with my C++ code. Not sure if the library was created with Python's performance in mind, or they simply didn't think about back EMF in electromagnets...5 -
I hate sleeping, I always think about the possibility of the work I can do in the time I would have saved from not sleeping

i always assume that my code is right so when the compiler gives an error, its hard for me to find out why it gives an error and why it doesnt work. my mind is too convinced that it is correct.
i guess i have to sleep it off 😴 maybe tomorrow it will be easier to fix5 -
I'm on the way to building my own B2B SAAS business. I code all day, sleep for 3 hours, have no money, and sometimes do a couple of freelancing projects to survive.
My friends are in jobs, earning way more than me. I feel a bit jealous, doubting my abilities.
Am I doing right? Or I'm just a nerd with a potato computer struggling like a dog? Am I even walking on the correct path?6 -
Was bored af with assignment at hand. So just went ahead and wrote a class to implement Eat. Sleep. Code. Repeat. XD6

Okay, had a freelance JavaScript gig (with Three.js 3d lib). Usually I put the code on github so I have easier time switching between Desktop and laptop during work, unless I have to sign an NDA or something. Today at 5 AM I got mail from freelancing site support that client reported me for having code on public repo (but it's not like it is a proprietary software, it's based on threejs editor). I made repo private and went to sleep. Later I'm reading through messages, guy was cursing me, threatend to sue me etc. Ended up dropping the client. Did I do something really unprofessional? Unless I'm told not to, I want to show my code and I don't believe in not showing it by default. What do you guys think?13

When I cannot sleep or when I'm half asleep I always think "in programming code". Like if my daily problems or issues where actual classes and methods I need to fix or implement.
This is super weird and I cannot do anything against it. I'm wondering if I am the only one who does this.1 -
Couldn't sleep this morning, so at 6am I tried to tackle the bug that gave me a hard time yesterday... at 10am I found the bug, and so I remembered the number one rule when coding.
KISS? Nope.
The number one rule is that your past self is dumb and he probably created the bug in the easy part of the code... you know, the one you didn't even check because of-course-the-bug-cannot-be-there-Im-not-stupid.2 -
I really like the concept of a "hackerspace" but they are far away from my flat and after working all day I don't really wanna travel across the city for hours to try things for an hour or two because I need to catch the train on time to get at least a bit of sleep.
I'm thinking of a "digital hackerspace" where ppl can "meet" and write code or build something(?). Does something like this exist?
If it doesn't I'd really like to build that kind of thing because I'd say I'm not the only person thinking like that 😅5 -

Are rants against oneself allowed here? Anyway, instead of writing code based on half-assed guesses just FUCKING STOP and FUCKING THINK about the problem at hand! This way you don't have to bang your head against the keyboard. POOR KEYBOARD! Anyway, now it works and I need sleep.3

I just spent 3 days with 1 or 2 hour of sleep just for learning a new way to code. Not a project it just for learning. And it make me crazy i cant stop thinking about that. And now im not sleeping at all and code almost 24 hours. But i feel a lot of fun while writing a line of code. I enjoyed every sound i made with keyboard.
Im soo happy now i learned a lot of things. I dont know how to stop and i dont want to stop coding.
I dont know what im talking but thanks devrant for letting me post this shit.5 -

Attending in a local game jam with some friends.
One of the team members wrote the worst code I've ever seen. After him realizing that it's buggy as hell he left to sleep having me fixing his mess at 4 am to somehow get something done by the end of the event.
It resulted in me rewriting nearly everything he had done.
Guess which team didn't manage to have something playable in the end...1 -

Been working on an issue for the past 3 days. For a gamer, I didn't even start Steam even once. Now, after so much frustration, barely any sleep and too many mindfucks, I finally figured it out and commit my code. Now I can watch Suicide Squad in peace. :')
-
As soon as I'm starting a project in my spare time again, I'm starting to dream in code again..
Came up with a solution in my sleep though.2 -
Writes a slot of code,
Closes laptop and goes for sleep,,
Wakes up opens laptop
commits and git push
and sleeps happily.
who knows there might be robbery at night, or fire in home or may be earthquake. -
The moment you wake up from seeing yourself debugging code in your sleep is basically the moment you realise you have been baptised as a true developer.
What experiences have you had which you consider to be your development 'baptism'? :D4 -
Some days I hate my work - other days I love it. Usually what happens is I make some poor decision that I have to live with and get super angry with myself, feel my colleagues are disappointed, go home, feel sad, sleep, go back, talk to them about it and try to learn from my mistakes - and then I'm back at loving work. Repeat. Software development is so much more than writing code.
-
Just noticed a thread on r/programmerhumor about bank code intentionally adding delays with all these JavaScript code blocks of how it's adding sleep cycles in.
So I spent an hour reading the documentation and wrote up an over engineered solution in COBOL just to prove a point.2 -
awake for 48 hrs already still needs to code because i'm a slave and i won't be able to sleep if i stop but brain is now lagging halp!2
-
Wanted to get to bed early tonight, but ended up wasting two hours after I moved code from my development machine over to a test system and it was failing. After adding all kinds of logging to figure out where it was failing on the test machine i realized i fixed am error in an input file on my dev machine, but that error in the input fine was still there on the test machine. Another night with little sleep and tomorrow is Monday. 😭

Me: preparing to go to sleep.
Github: you’re now able to use code spaces beta.
Me: fuck sleep for a while and let’s give it a try
Anyone is using it ?6 -
When it's 2:45am and you've just finished rewriting a large piece of your code and all your tests pass. A normal person would probably be asleep already. A sane person would go to sleep.
What would you call a person who stays up at this hour just because he likes the tunes a bit too much? :)
https://music.youtube.com/watch/...
just some good tunes and all the green tests.... :dance:5 -
When i was around 13, I wanted to make video games. Didn't know much about how to code and stuff but it got me into Ruby and Python.
But I actually properly learned how to program in my uni's first semester because I wanted to sleep in my professor's class so I pulled two all nighters to speed up my pace. Was worth it. -
3 hours to understand that I needed an if for my code to work like it was supossed.
I need more coffee and sleep...
And just posted this rant as a comment to another rant. I am so fucked up. And the holidays just begun....2 -
Cause when you die or exit from process it doesn’t matter how it happened, was it kill -9, sigkill or sigterm. As long as you go to hell / heaven / you name it and not to /dev/null you can still try to segfault the universe. Just give me the code !!!
And it aligns well with depression, alcoholism and lack of sleep. -
I guess I would say that coding changed my life because ever since I was little like 5 I was interested in technology but didint know how it was made in till 2 years later I learned that it was programming that made it. Up so when I became 10 I wanted to learn how to code because I wanted to make my own things and just overall was entertained with coding so I started learning and really liked it so 2 years later I start picking up and finishing HTML,CSS and JavaScript I'm really glad I did I get to make cool things and I'm really happing coding rather than going to my dam school😂 anyways to me code is life I don't really care about food or sleep but its fun making stuff

Am i the only one having a strong tendency for afternoon sleep?
It's 5.12 in the morning now, and i am still awake because of this stupid , holiday routine that unknowingly happens on every damn holiday.
I wake up with a sound 10-12 hours sleep at 12 noon or 1 pm, eat some breakfast (or "brunch" , you say) , turn on some youtube or web series, watch it till 2/3pm, then try to study/ code , and then... Zzzz am asleep..
Usually am on my bed full time: eating there , studying there, watching movies there... so maybe that's the reason, but i sincerely don't understand where this sleep comes from?
And then i wake up at 9 or 10pm, eat some more on the bed, back to binge watch till 12 or 1 in night , then eat some more, then binge watching some more , and then when my mind seems to drift back to sleep, i realize i haven't studied anything and then i start at 4 or 5am..(that is , now)
Every fucking holiday ever. maybe these web series and other diversions that messes my brain, but even if am not watching any web series, i am in front of youtube tutorials , stack overflow, twitter , my IDEs,... for almost an equal time.. and the sulking extra sleep routine still happens.
I am starting to think that its somewhat related to being in front of laptop for full day than what am watching on it. whatever this is , I only want to be able to work on my usual holiday afternoon, like i would do, when am in college or some coaching centre5 -
Fuck. Lack of sleep messes up work. I was writing code changes to a build for two hours but I deployed it to the wrong directory every time and then I wondered why my changes weren't reflected..
sleep++ needed.. -
If got this code with the 20second sleep statement. And I am not really sure if it is a good idea to have it ...
def start_instance(self):
instance=self.ec2.Instance(self.iId)
instance.start()
while instance.state['Name'] != 'running':
sleep(5)
instance=self.ec2.Instance(self.iId)
sleep(20) #Let's sleep another 20 for the server to be really up
return instance.state
Can I have some advice regarding best practices?3 -
I wish someone could sing me a lullaby to sleep coz all I think now is how to solve tomorrow code assignment 😋1
-
I don't know whether it's correct but i am gonna just put it out there
So long story short i am coding for 10 years now , and it came to a point where it's boring now so boring that even the most beautiful written code does not produce the same effect of achievement, and i started making a lot of fucked up mistakes, coding makes me sleep now
I came across some pills called called "cognitive enhancers" modafinil and adrell, does these really help?23 -

Amother one:
Seconf CS101 class. We had to write a program that multiplies two parameters in a method.
I asked the tutor for help because it was my forst timr ever writimg code.
"ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? THIS IS BASIC STUFF YOU SHOULD ALREAEDY KNOW IN YOUR SLEEP. ANYMORE QUESTIONS? "
Went to the prpfessor and told him what kind of assholes are working for him. Found out that the tutpr is not tutoring anyone amymore because the found someone who is not an asshole.
College is fun.1 -
Maybe I shouldn't code today... or get more sleep.
Every single bug I had today was due to referencing the wrong variables... and not including 'this.'
How do you guard against creating variables with the same names in method and class scope?2 -
Come up with a cool idea and the concepts I want to learn by making the idea. Download IDE/editor if I don't have it. Open that bitch up. Crack a beer and my knuckles. Yep, nothing can stop me now. No distrac- damn my shoes are shiny. What was I doing again?
*as I am laying down to sleep* oh no. I forgot to code that cool thing AGAIN. -
Pull an all nighter and Fuck up my exercise schedule or have sleep and code tomorrow (imp and might take multiple nights and day).....
Such hard decisions, 50 pull ups is hard to do after an all nighter 😥1 -
If I code 10 to 1 or 2 I can have good sleep..but in any case if I sleep eaely before 1 then code snippet and bugs come in dreams.........
..
Even if I sleep early when I'm too tired.. -
Okay, so not eating has become a major problem now. This morning when i got out of bed and stood up, i fell backwards in to my bed again. I couldn't see anything, all black. A few minutes went past and i got back on my feet, got dressed and headed to school.
The thing is, a day can go past and i won't feel hungry at all. But i have to eat, but i don't.
Am i the only one with this problem?
Another thing that is happening is that when i get home from school i sit down in front of my computer and start to write some code, hours fly by and there goes that day, no homework done either.
No food, no homework. Only coding. I think i have a serious problem 😂.
On a side note, a few days ago i tasted coffee for the first time, and now i can't resist buying a cappuccino/latte when i walk past espresso house in the morning.
Here's a interesting question, why the fuck did you waste your time reading this? 😂1 -
# Gave me a job and more stress and literally nightmares;
# Physically resisting myself to give solutions to everything people moan about. Even myself. But we know things flap in production;
# Cursing my life, other people's code, customer's IQ more often;
# Getting more LinkedIn, messages, profile views and requests than my social media (which I really don't give a shit about);
# Using a combination of programming punctuations in usual writing (this rant for example);
# My sleep is down the toilet;
# Never complaining any coffee as long as it works; -
Watch an "Introduction" video about it, or read the docs/blogs on why and where to use this particular tech. If you find it useful, then get your head down and work. Watch every YouTube video, read company docs, read random blogs, read FAQs. Honestly, any source you can get your hands on.
And never forget to write more code than you read.
Consistency and hard work is the only key.
I still remember when I was first getting introduced to front end, I didn't sleep for 3 straight days and was studying all that I could. -
Looking at code from previous devs...which I now support...
Oh hey there is a function to retry connecting to the database if it fails to open...ok...
It doesn't return anything e.g. a boolean. Not a big deal I'll catch the exception...
It catches the exception and silently ignores it? WTF how do I know if it fails??
It keeps trying for 20 seconds...sounds reasonable...wonder how long it waits between failed attempts...0. No sleep, no back off, literally spams the open call as quick as it can throw the exception...
I'm glad I personally dont know them. They are fucking idiots. -
Waking up. Though I wish I didn't have to. Wouldn't it be nice if you could sleep-code (like how some people sleep-walk)?2
-
https://remotelyawesomejobs.com/job...
Looking at the "ideally you should" sections doesn't make me feel this is a junior position:
You are passionate about making data useful to the lay-person, there is no data you couldn’t derive visual meaning from. D3.js is your go to and Canvas is your friend.
You build components in your sleep, rock solid and performant using atomic design patterns.
You bend CSS processors to your will or throw them out and code by hand.1 -
What is the longest commute you would consider for a dream job? Let's take mode of transportation into consideration too.
I just got an offer for a job 2.5 hours away, but it is by train so I can code/game/sleep while riding. For a few months, I am going to try it before moving closer.4 -
I'm so scared that if I fall asleep then I'll wake up and it'll be tomorrow and I'll have to go in and get asked questions all day at 10minute intervals instead of being able to code that I'm putting off going to sleep so I have longer to adjust to this horrible fate
-
What do you think about my solution to two sum?
https://leetcode.com/problems/...
It took me about 10 seconds to realize it can be solved this way, and then FUCKING HALF AN HOUR until i finally wrote the actual code in a way that worked as it should...
...i really should sleep more. and get examined for brain decomposition or something.8 -
!rant felt like a zombie all of last week and today, damn this brain fog. All I want to do is sleep lol. Had to revise my code countless times5

Code gets complicated? Blame the one who forced that coding style in front of management and go to sleep peacefully.
Either work like an adult and accept criticism or go away and let me do what I'm paid for ...2 -
Does this happen to you guys too?
Yesterday I was coding auth for node.js with help of tutorial (I'm pretty new to node.js). I was pretty sure that I understood how it works and I turned off my computer. Then when I was in bed ready to go to sleep I tried to go through the code in my head, but I completely forgot everything I wrote. I guess I was just copying the code without even noticing I didn't know how it works. Now I'm trying to learn it once more. -
Only God can refactor this code.
I wish I knew who wrote this. 😬
App.jsx is doomed, looks like the content of jquery.min.js.
4:04 sleep not found. -
My life:
Int main(nothing){
while(1){
drink(beer);
code(c);
sleep(the_next_time);
}
return 0;
}
/* compile error -infinite loop found- */ -
Automatically code all the nice stuff I'm dreaming to implement whilst sleeping. Or just remember what I dreamt of. Maybe I need more sleep 😬
-
Test your code. Take extra time to do self-review. It'll improve your code quality and position within your peers.
When you enter that "minor change-trial-error" phase. Go to sleep or take a long break. You're loosing time and adding more work to be reviewed and corrected later -
I have forgotten how to sleep anymore. Idk if it's a good thing or a bad one. Either way, I get extra hours to code. xD6
-
Sometime I need to eat and write code at the same time..
And when that happend I bite my spoon with my hand busy at the keyboard.
The question is why I write some text here when I know I can sleep longer..3 -
I worked on an Android sdk that download code from remote server and run it. the I needed to added a feature that recognize when the user went to sleep(inactivity and in charger) wake the phone and start litecoin mining till someone touch the phone. it was evil but cool.3
-
All the night thinking about a possible solution, finally got it, code it, push and went to sleep some time, then I realized it didn't deploy and doesn't actually run ._. almost cry, and then I realized the error was that i was using the wrong variable and forcing an infinite loop .___.
-
Weirdest dream i had about code, i was just coding all my social interactions; i'd have some kind of overlay over my vision and i'd have to type in my every move and sentence while going on about my day in a very gray and sluggish world as if i was just a programmer stuck inside my body, working with myself the way i work with a server.
Another time i actually found a bugfix in my sleep. I had wasted 8 hours on a dumb bug that day without managing to find a solution and when i woke up, all the code was in my head and it worked on the first try! -

when i work, i code. whe i sleep, i code. When i talk to friends, i talk about code. I figured out that its going to be a hell of a code review when I'm gone.1

Happens alot with Android devs 😝😝.
It does't matters how much you try to make your code run, the moment you sleep some code fairy comes to do some code magic.1 -
Stupid Adobe Experience Manager only works in IE11.
I develop on MacBook pro.
I setup remote desktop on a windows computer at office to remote in so I can work on my MacBook remotely and deploy (manually via copy and paste into a text area called “HTML code”).
Everything is setup for the weekend.
Boom, it restarted itself and went to sleep after a Windows update...1 -
He couldn't sleep for 2 days because he missed her.
.
I couldn't sleep for 4 days because I missed a stupid ";" in my code.

Who like me can’t sleep while something won’t work in his code , like i am awake for two days now just because i can’t move on a huge missing part in my code :(1
-
Giving them a bit test of programming told them young man..young gal, if you wana go far with this shit you have to be serious....You cnt just wake up from ur sleep en say you wana code..Nop it takes passion and practice.

Work as a SOE Engineer and have a lot of custom application deployments managed via PowerShell. Collegue came over today and suggested that I include a few more "sleep" breaks as newer processers run code to fast and can skip over cmdlts.
I can't even.2 -
I'm bored and can't sleep soooo...
Bad clever code vs Good clean code
Worst / best examples. - what's devRant got
Stories, pictures, links. All mediums are welcome1 -
When I was started my journey in coding, what ever I do, I think about coding. Sleep code, eat code, dream code, dating code. Its become my usually nightmares.
Its become worst when I got stucked in coding. Ppl see me like a geek zombie.
Coding used to ruin my life.
But when my code working like charm, feel like god. I can do anything. 😂😂😂
Sometime l just love it, but most of the time I fucking hate it. -
How do all you other devs deal with sleep? Because I am losing my fucking mind I work for myself so I don't go to work at 9am leave at 6pm.
I normally work until 6am and then sleep till 12 drink 3 strong coffee to start functioning again try and do something productive which at the moment involves catching up on the NBA playoffs and then starting work at 6pm.
Due to resent baby I thought shit my life is fucked I haven't left the house in 3 days I need structure routine I need to work 9am to 6pm become human again but I just can't FUCKING sleep it's now 1:30am and I'm trying to sleep.
I know what your thinking why are you on devRant but I've been trying to sleep for the past 3 hours but all I can think about is work code, refactoring, new languages, security, support shit that can wait but I can't get it out my head, keep thinking "ah your not tired you could work", and YES I have a list which get bigger every day wish I had a drug dealer or was still in contact with my old mates so I could get some Valium but it's hot milk and sleeping tablets for me, life is so much easier when you can just fuck of home at the end of the day and forget about work, not having your laptop next to you trying to trick you into opening it. How do other people who work for theirselves deal with the life work balance?4 -
Mondays aren't the best time for me.
If it is a lazy weekend, this is the routine:
Sleep most of the morning in, wake up - do things, 10PM, think of some code to work on. 11PM, yeah, enough energy now - lets code! -
So... The system encountered some error and couldn't wake from sleep when I was gone to eat...
And the code which was already running since days needs to be re ran
I hate it
