Just left a job where I felt like one of the best devs on the team. At my new job I feel I have so much to learn from the devs I work with. I'm so happy. :)9

!rant
As much as we love to complain about our PMs and coworkers, I feel blessed to be in a field where after working all day, I enjoy what I do so much I come home and work on my own projects. Who's with me?9 -
One day a client sent me gifts and a sweet letter just because they loved their new website so much. I just about cried. I work in an industry where acknowledgment and thankfulness by clients are extremely rare. 😱😭8
-
The Company I work for has a new Website.
Me: opens inspector, changed an elements position.
Boss: "Stop! We paid so much for this you'll destroy everything."
Me: reload page, smile at him.7 -
I just finished my thesis defense, one of the committee members obliterated me with incredibly difficult questions but it was so much fun to respond to this 40min smackdown after presenting all my work in 50 minutes. The battle has been won ladies and gentlemen, I am incredibly happy.13

Alright, it's not perfect yet, only one post exists and the anonymous analytics are hardly working. Next to that I'm tired as fuck and need to go to bed so fuck it, here we go:
https://much-security.nl
There's not much yet, just one tiny post :)
I have no clue if it will work or crash but I think it'll handle well enough 😅
If you'd find any security issues, please don't exploit them, just report them and I'll take a look asap!
Thanks!44 -
"Hi! I love your work on github! I'm planning a cryptocurrency exchange and am currently looking for a developer to work with. Would you be interested in working with me and if so, how much would it cost?"

Friend: So what's the plan for Christmas
Me: Nothing much just coding
Friend: No apart from work
Me: Yeah coding
Friend: That means, you not getting drunk or laid this Christmas
Me: No, because I can't C Sharp when coding
Friend: Fuck developers2 -
Best and worst customer I've had: A bank.
Great because they had so much money for projects.
Unbearable because everything needed to work in IE6.6 -
!rant
Jesus, this took so much work...
My university has started Swift lectures but my god their Mac minis are really crappy so I decided I would install Mac on my PC.
How can an operating system take so much fucking work to even boot!16 -
SO FUCKING MUCH COFFEE!!!! FUUUUUCK!!
I'M LITERALLY BURSTING OF ENERGY!!!
I CAN'T EVEN CONCENTRATE ON MY WORK ANYMORE!!14 -
I know the hate for Facebook is strong here, but I was just approached to work on their eCrimes team... Catching online predators and the like... I'm honestly considering it, given how much evidence is posted. But it requires so much more programming knowledge than I have... I don't know where to start...27
-
"no micro managing here!"
*Boss comes in at 5*
- how much work have you done?
- why isn't this finished yet?
- you're working too slow
- show me git status
- show me git log
- why is this taking you so long?15 -
Working from home. That time you spend commuting is spent on working. That random guy showing up at your desk breaking your concentration doesn't exist. If there's a bullshit meeting you have to go to, you can dial in, put yourself on mute and continue to work while listening and just unmute as needed.
Seriously so much more productive.11 -
My work pc has been replaced just now. It took so much time for them to replace that crappy piece of garbage. Now, I can alt+tab 10x faster than my previous pc. Lol.
-BTW. This is my very 1st rant/post here. Hi guys 🤓.8 -
I'm alone in the office today and already done a lot of work. How can I be so much more productive when nobody is around.10
-
!rant
The last two days we were only young people @ our Office.
Because we are funny as fuck we put the jacket of our smallest college on the sealing xD
Oh gosh I love work sometimes so much :D11 -
!rant
I just asked for a 42% raise having an already good salary and got it easily.
The best thing? I helped this company grow so much I barely work half the time I used to due to the newly hired workforce. I can work on my own projects so much.9 -
My manager is so cool at work that he doesn't care if I sleep during office hours or even skip working for a couple of days as long as I meet the deadlines. All he cares about is getting the work done and keeping his team happy.
I abso-frigging-lutely respect him very much and like him as a person.
Unlike my friends' managers in other departments, he wouldn't assign me more work if I finished a project before the deadline.
I wish all the managers in all the companies realise work-life balance is important and act like him.10 -
Got a job offer that’s ~€1000 more than i make now. But idk i care very much about the company i work at right now so I think I have to do the right thing for my colleagues ..
I’m starting in january, see you cunts and your pile of shit codebase around, i’m out 👋3 -

I'm so so happy to have joined devRant: it gave me lots of motivation to work on my personal projects. In the last two days I worked more on an old dream/project than I did in the last year. TWO. DAYS.
Don't know for how long this motivation will last, but - for now - thank you so much, people :')3 -
Me, whenever i work with something other than java: "Wow, this could be done so much easier with java"17
-
I LOVE WORK FROM HOME!! I love it sooooo much. You suckers think I’m actually doing work? HAHA. No honest, I’m so much more productive at home than in the office! Hahaha I love this!!!8
-
"You're charging so much for a work you did so little time. "
"It took me years to learn how do that in so little time" -
Be me, miss specifying the item in an array so a drop-down doesn't work, get fired from the project and moved to a much lesser project.
Be the other guy, fuck up the app so bad you have to roll back 3 weeks worth of work...no big deal...1 -
Today I explained a young kiddo that <insert multilayer game here> cannot work without servers.
Then he asked me how I don't get bored writing so much...1 -
Just purchased my work machne on yesterday 😍😍😍 It's so gorgeous, been dreaming about it for the last 6 weeks. It's the Asus ZenBook 3 Deluxe. I waited that much because its release date was in mid May, but it was only available for purchase in late May/Early June11
-
Dear company, stop installing shit on my work laptop! I guess you love these antivirus and tracking software but I can't do my job with so much slowness.7
-
We get so spoiled with stuff at work that it is starting to show.
Way too much paid personal time during the week makes me lazy.
People bringin biscuits and shit make me fat.
Keurig machines all over the damned place.
Birthday celebrations left and right.
And much....much more and I love it.8 -
When your week has been so busy and exhausting you remember at 1PM Friday you have a deadline for Monday morning and force yourself to do a weeks worth of work in 4 hours and deploy it on a Friday without QA testing!
To future me - I apologise for Monday’s headaches. -
Some people just lack so much independence, damnit!
Einmal mit Profis arbeiten ... ! (*) 😒
(*) German expression that expresses depending on tone or context a mild to severe frustration as well as the desire to work with qualified people just ... once?! Maybe?! Please?! Often used in IT and dev contexts, because - you know.12 -
So this startup guy was supposed to call me today between 12-2pm on Skype... well he didn't, nor did he send an email... So I guess he forgot... Again...
I'm taking this as a sign he's having 2nd thoughts or that there's going to be way too much work.
Either way, feels to me I should just pass?7 -
I am now officially 23 years old.
So many hours of work invested
So many countless blood spilled
So much sweat made
So many years passed
So many projects worked on
Summed up in 0 successful projects
If someone were to ask me to showcase what I had done in 23 years of my life, I cannot show them something that no longer exists. The projects are dead. I cannot even prove my friends what I had done other than blindly say what I had done. But behind the scenes I worked so much and am completely demotivated by all of the pressure from failure. I have actually never felt so bad on my birthday. 2020 really is the worst year ever. I feel like a failure while life is just exponentially passing by.....18 -
When you're stuck on the same error for so long, you try so many different things and by the time you get it to work, it feels like you've made so much progress. But once you take a step back you realize you really haven't done much.4
-
Working for a company where the coworkers working 24/7 and the boss (ceo) expect me to do the same, even working on weekends.
But when i mentioned I have life distinctly personal and working life. But no, boss wouldn’t care much about my life anyway.
I got call names for being a not team player, not committed much , a thief (“ I paid you money but you didn’t work 24/7”) and they even claimed I don’t have heart to work.
It affect my personal so much that I can’t be happy even on the weekends. I got perturbed sleeps. Keep thinking of working .
Obviously they played well on guilt tripping me.8 -
All I want for Christmas is.... for Windows 10 search bar to respond and work in a reasonable amount of time and not suck so much.3
-
When you work a 12 hr day, then stop on your way home for a drink to forget about work, then sit at the bar alone on @devrantapp and think about work because you love your job so much!4

Fabric (crashlytics) , I have to say it is helps so much when testing the iOS app, haven't gotten it to work with Android but I'd just install the apk anyways lol5

I have been using Linux based system from so long but last week I was building outlook add-on using Visual studio. It was a nightmare to work on visual studio(Or any IDE in Windows) after working for a long time on Linux/UNIX based systems. So much of mouse clicks, worst console experience, etc. Windows is definitely not for developers.11

Soooo it's Monday........ 🤯
@C0D4 started the day fixing current projects defects (4 tickets smashed before coffee 💪)
Then after coffee, run a test coverage report and see a significant decline over the past few months, so spends a couple hours adding more tests to get some areas filled in - meh, nothing like 50+ lines per test... to test a if() statement but whatever - complex scenarios will be complex to get too, but no my tests break and I'm missing data I didn't know about🤦♂️
So let's comment all that out, and go to lunch ... mmmm lunch.
Get back, start working on those again, and then get handed a new issue, so comment that all back out again, ( ok I know what you're thinking, but I'm working in an environment that does not use git for deployments - don't ask, real pain in the ass I haven't had time to invest into yet - but as code versioning only) anywho, starts to workout this new issue but don't figure it out, enter a 30 minute meeting.................. yea that was 2 hours later but was a very practical whiteboard session only to work out I have something like 16-20 weeks of work over 4-5 projects to get out in like 6 weeks... hahahahahahaha fml..... oh and that's excluding another project which had a 6 weeks of work in the pipeline to get to somehow.... I'm not seeing this one happening, and probably conflicting projects needed on top of that down the track... but we'll leave those out for now!
Whoot is fucking home time!!!
🤷♂️I'm starting to think I'm like a team of 5-10 devs right now, maybe I should start asking for 5-10x more 😏
#letsBringOnTuesday!!!!4 -
So i have been working with a so called python expert my manager on a project.
He has 3 years of more experience in python than me.
The best thing is he shows up everyday with random post from stackoverflow to fix our bugs everyday.
And if the code is in python2 he says that only difference is just put () around print and it will work
🤦♂️
He earns thrice as much i do3 -
It's not that my work is hard. Basically, all the work I do these days is something I've done before with a slight twist on it.
I just feel underappreciated.
"bUt u mAkE sO mUcH mOnEy dO uR jObBbb!!"
How much money I make should not suppress how I feel at a company. Two years without a raise, every company meeting is a circle jerk for the sales team, and whenever our work is mentioned it's "Great job to the PMs for getting this to our clients."
Fuck you guys. Lol. This is a team effort from all sides, but to put engineers last on the "kudos" ladder is just so shitty.8 -
With the winter months fast approaching I am putting serious consideration into smuggling a blanket into my desk drawer after hours so that when it gets really cold due to the a/c, I can just whip out the blanket and code at work wrapped up like a burrito.
Yes, for sure, there will be looks, but I don't much care and it'll also be the day remembered as the day someone brought blankets into work.3 -
So rant-ish question:
Since not much is happening around here, can ya’ll open source devRant so community can work on it? Seems like a perfect candidate for open sourcing.
The users of this app are perfect working on the app as well.14 -
I can't always check my phone at work but I can still get devRant notifications on my Moto 360. Well I checked my watch so much today that I killed the battery before 4pm. Now I have to sneak to the bathroom to check notifications for the next hour.

The Return of Mr. Gitmaster:
So there is this colleague I already ranted about several times. After my previous team lead had confronted him about not doing much work, there was some irritation because he showed not up at work, but it turned out the external training he did was just a week earlier. Then he was ill a week, another week vacation so we didn't see him much. Not that his pre- or absence makes much difference to our repo: When his and my team lead looked at his commits of the past three months they found like the one copy-pasted HTML-form that wouldn't even show.
Fast forward to now, where we have a new team lead and we were going to lunch with Mr. gitmaster. So we got some more hero stories from the great work he was doing in the previous company. How he was graphically monitoring the heap fragmentation that stupid glibc was causing to their search engine, and how much better it became with tcmalloc.
I still don't understand how he bridges that cognitive dissonance from all the superior tech knowledge he displays to not actually writing any code at all. Not that I would not have experienced some states of feeling low, in paralysis unable to write a single line of code... but he seems so full of confidence, always commenting how trivial and easy all these tasks would be, as if it's all so lightyears below his abilities. Maybe he should just become a manager - but not mine. -
I just made my own implementation of a scraper for NASA's Pic of the Day. It should have automagically changed my wallpaper at 4 AM to the new pic of the day.
Today's "pic of the day" is a video. It broke my shit.... So much for the excitement of seeing my automation work.4 -
I got this new job last month, but don't really have much work allotted. So I decided to make some productive use of my time:
made this
https://github.com/jayeshsolanki93/...
Its a library for devrant in go.
would love some love, feedback/pull-requests 😄5 -
I'm surprised how much work I got done today. Was working in a cafe with my girlfriend. So productive.
Then I get home and think I'll continue the flow but here I am.....Just being a potato1 -
What the fuck is wrong with you Windows?
Why the hell do you take so much time to load?
Actually, FUCK YOU.
FUCK YOU FOR BEING THE ONLY OS WHERE HIGH END GAMES WORK.
FUCK YOU FOR BEING SO SO SO SLOW LIKE YOUR GRUB.10 -
When I told someone to read the docco+wiki and ask me if there were problems, for them to come back every five mins to tell me "so, how does this all work?"
I wrote the wiki and it was A-Z. There's nothing I knew about the product that wasn't in the wiki.
It took me so much self-control to not bash his head into my monitor.5 -
Had a burnout at my last job when I worked myself to the bone to cope with stress, a failing relationship and not having much money. Also, made a crap ton of mistakes at work because of it.
Didn't sleep much, started skipping lunch to save what little money I had so I could commute (friends treated me every now and then, still grateful), dropped out of college because couldn't juggle work, studies and got chewed out by my family every day and just worked non-stop.
The end result was that I collapsed when I got home one night and woke up at 3 am with a severe migraine; stayed awake till sunrise then left for work again (got scolded really badly by everyone, felt loved). Fun times.1 -
Ever have those days where you come into work thinking "Yes! I'm going to get so much done today!" and then you sit down at your computer and state blankly at your screen for a few hours?3
-
Been developing a Java app for 3 months, including basically everything from aop to rest services.
Meeting with po:
Me: So, guess how many loc I wrote.
Po: 400?
Me: *laughs* I'll get to 10.000 this week.
MAN COMES IN WITH CHANGING REQUIREMENTS ON AN HOURLY BASIS YET STILL DOESNT UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH WORK ALL THIS SHIT IS!!1 -
So I mentioned before that I managed to beat the ATS system for one job posting and got an immediate interview invite.
They one upped me by sending me to a video interview with an AI. It's supposed to analyze my facial expressions and determine if I'm worthy of being hired.
Got a rejection email just now.
So after all that hard work, looks like Skynet didn't like me very much 😛.6 -
My first hackathon when I was in my university. I never used to work on any side projects apart from assignments and academic projects. I was so shocked when I saw that people were so dedicated in developing a working product in a weekend sacrificing sleep and food. I got so depressed that I wasn't doing anything and people around me were doing so much!!!!! That's when I was motivated to learn more, do more, work more. After this, I never missed a single hackathon while I was studying :) I'm so much better at what I do now because of hackathons.
-
Me: oh boy i have so much fun stuff planned for this weekend, better get my work done before it
My immune system: here have this flu with some pink eye on top2 -
FUCK OPENSSL. I LOVE IT AND HATE IT SO FUCKING MUCH. WORK FASTER AND BE LESS CONFUSING SO I CAN BRAG ABOUT MY PRETTY ENCRYPTION CODE SOONER. FUCK20

Me: I have so much to do! How the hell am I going to get all this done?!
**hears someone say something about some framework/library I don't know**
Me: hmmm let me google that real quick then I'll get back to work...
**3 hours later**
Me: damnit! I'm never going to get my work done! -
Devrant: @UserIFollow posted new rant
Me: Oh cool, I need a break anyways...

Me: There is new stuff in dayly toprants. I have to read them, too.

My manager announced in today's team meeting that I got promoted and going to work in another department next month and no one said anything and I'm so fucking triggered. I just can't help it, I worked with most of these people for a long time, I know their best wishes mean nothing but come on, how fucking salty can you be, and why do I care so much lol.8
-
Have you ever taken on so much work to the point where you just start tearing up because you want to sleep?2
-
So pretty much all my clients have decided they are done working or responding to emails until the new year. Normally this would be fine and dandy, but I work in an office that says I have to be there every day still, and all my projects are in a state of "Waiting for Client Approval" so I can't move forward on anything.
I've spent two days so far just staring at my work pretending to do things while browsing the web, but I'm losing my mind here pretending to work when I could be doing other things. I still have at least 4 days next week where I will be in the office hoping someone responds, either say something is broke or tell me to push it live so I can get my projects out of limbo.6 -
Manager asked suggestions to make any changes to work culture, because of the overall productivity issue of the team. The culture was so much toxic that no one was ready to speak.2
-
Have somewhat of a headache but I still want to work on some stuff so I started using f.lux and it's so much easier on my eyes than having the full on blue light burning my eyes out. Any one else using f.lux here?7

Yesterday hr called me for a meeting 1 on 1 that lasted for over 1 hour.
Me: i work on my side project when i get home every day
Hr: ohhh.. so you do have time to work on another project aside from ours?
Me: what? I said i work at my project after work when i come hom-
Hr: so you have that much free tim ok how about this. Would you like to work on another project for our clients? So you'd be working on 2 projects-
Me: ...
Hr: one day you work on this primary project the next day you work on the secondary project

Corporate people really think giving me MORE work with NO increase of payment is a REWARD???? Go FUCKV yourselves11 -
I work in marketing just as much as in development, so this is relevant. Fill in your own captions for your own situation.

Is it so much to ask for ability to do my job remotely. I work on a fucking computer, I can do this shit at home. I don't need to drive 50 miles there and back to do my job.
Flexibility is a thing.5 -
You ever have to work with people that are worse than you? and yet everyone in the group sees them as more competent? So much so that they get to be involved more with the projects than you are?
I hate this feeling, I'm just as good. -

I’m now preparing to switch jobs.
I hate interviews so much. Time to grind puzzles that I’ll never use in my real work.4 -
The week where you have so much to do on different projects, that even if you manage to work on all od them a bit it feels like nothing has been accomplished.
The point of being so tired that even the mildest sickness feels rediculously awful.
And it's friday. I manged to do some work for one of my bosses but the work I want to do didn't really get done and now I have two meetings in which I can say I started doing xyz but couldn't finish it due to bugs and exhaustion. And for the other project I wrote documentation.
Well.

I've just found an awesome repo:
https://github.com/tldr-pages/tldr
There is soooo much great stuff in there! Lots and lots of commands with some quick examples, much clearer than having to look through cryptic manpages and SO replies.
I literally just understood in 30 seconds how git stash and cherry-pick work thanks to those examples - something I struggled to wrap my head around from the --help manual
This is awesome!6 -
When you're become the most overqualified person on ur team and created so much stuff that only you know how they work or even exists.
And no one else is technical enough to understand it all.
So you develop a feeling that you can't be fired because you can't be easily replaced.2 -
Starting. Seriously I'm closing that gap on turning 30 and I'm tired of being a wage slave so I'm teaching myself by using resources I've found online but the immense amount of knowledge I need seems unsurmountable.
I'm coming home from work and learning for at least two hours before going to bed and going back to work but it seems so far until I get to be creating stuff instead of just trying to absorb as much of the basics as fast as possible.5 -
Does time tracking makes you anxious? I just had a small project for a fixed price(no time tracking) and I felt so much less anxiety while working. This one ticking clock makes my work so much stressful.8
-
Pirated MS office was so much better than the paid one. I never once had a banner pop-up and tell me that i didn't have a license 😖
Now, that i do have the license, the banner has made it a habit to pop-up whenever i work on something important 🤦6 -
Wellp lately so much shit happened with parents and school that id like to (atleast see my options for) get(ting) a job in order to be independent.
What could work, knowing im a backender, coding in cpp, but open for other langs ?
I have no degree, but my github repos lol8 -
You see that, over there?
That massive, 10-ton bag of dicks sitting there in the corner?
Secure Code Warrior can eat that ENTIRE FUCKING THING!
SO many flaws in their tests... SO much HIGHLY questionable content... utterly RIDICULOUS bullshit code with no comments and no context... asking me fucking Angular questions when I'm doing an Express test... two answers that are IDENTICAL... and a busted-ass site on top of it all.
I hate this motherfucking bullshit SO much, and at this moment I hate my employer even more for forcing me to deal with it.
But, hey, I hope you enjoy no work getting done today since you seem to prefer I do this instead, so I guess I'll just scare my dog some more as I yell about this bullshit.
Fuck you Secure Code Warrior, fuck you very, VERY much.7 -
Today I tried to rant but could not. My manager was on leave and today I almost attained nirvana with so much peace and solace in my work. It's such a delight
-
These days now, my boss trusts me so much and takes my opinions and suggestions and goes ahead with those. Not to mention so lenient with me regarding work times since I had the baby. I’m melting thinking about her.2
-
Management proposed to work with external freelancers, to "pick up speed so we can release these new designs sooner". We agreed, but of course we (the home team) can't have time to review their work because we need to develop other new features and bugfixes and such...
Weeks later, turns out that their changes are largely incompatible with the work we have been doing on the main branch. We are now rebasing/rewriting huge chunks of their work, probably taking as much time as it would have cost us to develop the design ourselves in the first place.4 -
Anyone here use atom? I tried switching to it from sublime, gave it a solid 2 weeks but had to give up on it. Just painfully slow, regularly taking 5-10 seconds to open a work project and let me start working on it and would continue to be slow whilst working.
Back to sublime now, so much better...21 -
Very much! My internship during school turned into a full-time job over the summer! I don’t make crazy money, but I LOVE the work and cost of living in my area is pretty low compared to the rest of the country. So, I’m great! 😁😁2

Why does Linux Bluetooth audio not work properly!!!!
I have been using Linux on my laptop (moving from macOS). I got so used to Linux, and I love it so much at this point, but I really wanna use my Bluetooth speakers (subwoofer ❤️❤️).
So, now, I have to use OSX again and I am actually disliking it.
WHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!14 -
Commit as you go. Work on one thing at a time. Be detailed in your commit messages.
Finding and reverting that one small change that breaks everything is so much harder to do when you change lots of files and the commit message is "update".2 -

I'm struggling at work. I hate senior mgmt at this company so much it's actually affecting my ability to produce work.
Fuckers high up have been delaying performance reviews for like a year, but they get their fucking bonuses with no delay. I can't afford not to have a job, so I'm trying to work, but it's hard. I try to keep things in perspective that they're still paying me so I should just do my job.. but how do you do it if you hate those cunts at the top so much. I became so toxic because of all the resentment too.5 -
Getting sent home from work because I fucked my back and I've never hated sitting down so much, so painful...
Won't even be able to sit at my desk and code :'-(4 -
Why so much hypocrite Devs here ?
Examples :
I don’t use VScode because it sends telemetry.
Same for Windows 10
Same for half other products.
Like YOU don’t collect telemetry in apps YOU build. And if you don’t, have fun debugging without any data beside “It doesn’t work” comments !8 -
remote work is so much better for me.. i think something is wrong with me because little things my co-workers do like clearing their throats, them slamming their keyboards and sometimes the way they laugh or even the way they speak... pisses me off so bad. OMG!!! even putting on headphones does not help. I wish i could ignore all that.
-
Oh God I've so much work left that I'm seeing approximations of Gaussian distribution everywhere
Even in dreams -
MY FUCKING COLLEGE PISSED VOC REHAB OFF SO MUCH THEY DROPPED MY FUNDING.
i got to waste 6 hours doing unnecessary work to learn this.

omfg. I hate this bullshit so much...
windows wont goddamn work after the anniversary update. it takes infinitely long to boot up , the searcj is not working , I am goddamn lagging for some fricking reason. what the hell Microsoft ?4 -
Im thinking about leaving my employer because I keep getting way too much work on my plate, people get annoyed that its not done in time and tell me that i should tell them if im getting too much work.
So i tell them its to much and our deadlines are to tight, then i just get told "this is how we always work, we just gotta finish things faster and better"...
Another one is that our HR/office manager keeps bugging me about setting up SMART goals so i can prove my value to the company and that its my responsibility to do so if i want a pay raise (even if im already underpaid)...
Im sorry but if you wanna keep me, you gotta give me some damn incentive to stay...
Ive been putting up with it sofar because i like the office and the people and the majority of the work itself and i really dont wanna go looking for another job because im really bad at it... but wtf... im so done with all the "how does this work" questions too...
tl;dr: getting negative reviews because im bad at my own evaluation is gonna make me quit probably, while im being praised for all other work i do4 -

Had a minor operation last week. Surgeon said I'd be fine to work immediately after.
I only managed a half-day at work (the day after the operation) before the pain became unbearable. That was 5 days ago - been off since.
Hate taking so much time off - halfway through a project, gonna go back to a mountain of work and a tighter deadline!3 -
That moment when you copy some code from another project of yours and the new code doesn't work but the two projects are almost identical...
Damn I wanna break this thing so much..... 😬😬😬 -
spent the entire day trying to get ssl to work 😩
it works now, but honestly, it's draining to spend so much time on config4 -
Did so much work today that my ring finger on my right hand is actually sore from pressing the enter key.
Too bad all that code belongs to my job and not me.6 -
Why the FUCK does Safari suck so much at implementing things that already WORK on every fucking browser except that apple piece of shit?5
-
Fuck timesheet
It's bad enough someone fucking disturb you in the middle of great thoughts. What's worse, you're QUESTIONED where the fuck your time was spent. So you need to work out how much time you have been disturbed, and put in the fucking timesheet!
What a fucking joke! As if we have too much time for meaningful stuff.8 -
The VPS where I host my owncloud instance has had its service tier upgraded since I spun it up. Opening a new one for the same price give you much better hardware stats now. Also, it's running Debian 8, which no longer gets updates from the owncloud repo. So yesterday I took this opportunity to make a new VPS, and try out nextcloud with it. I am floored. It is so much simpler for me. I'm not locked into whatever backend nextcloud chooses-- I have a choice.
Also, I can set up Apache to work however I want. I assume it'll work fine with nginx too.
Once it was installed and ready to go, I noticed I have much more granular and controlled access to my settings.
Happy camper!3 -
It feels weird now. I don't really have much to rant about. That's partially cause I haven't been doing much dev work lately (but the bit I have done, everything's been fine). My personal life is going fucking great for once, so nothing to worry about there (the girl I'm talking to is so fucking sweet, and just amazing overall)
Life is fucking good guys. I hope everyone that might have had a bad day or a bad week or whatever feels better soon. -
I fucking hate my job so much. I feel like I work harder than anyone at my level, yet I can't get promoted. I'm so fucking sick of putting in effort for nothing. We all get paid really well, and yet no one seems to give a shit about the work. Meanwhile I'm busting my ass, for what? No promotion.
For promo to next level, the projects I work on aren't supposed to matter, just the execution. And yet, I get told I don't have enough impact when I'm interested in promo? How can I, I have no fucking choice what I work on you fuckers.
Fucking bullshit job.7 -
Learn to say no...more than anything I just want to help my fellow engineers. Now I am so loaded with so much work that 3 people couldn't poorly do my job. No relief in sight and all I get are unrealistic deadlines and poor criticism when my work is better than anything that was done previously.
Someone tell me why the hell I wanted to do this line of work again?2 -
A dev's worst nightmare can be summed up as this:
"Working on updates
5% Progress
Don't turn off your computer"
So much for getting some work done tonight.....5 -
What do you think about replacing the backend with Google firebase, it would just save so much Work?7

It's hotter than Satan's latrines after vindaloo night here in the UK.
Today I look like a hobbit wandered through California and I'm seriously considering proposing a mid afternoon siesta.
Naps, blankets and pillows would make work so much easier to cope with.3 -
I'm working on a Web API for retrieving informarion of some sort (can't speak as it is a work in progress😝).
Before starting to work on this project all the experience I had was Desktop (C#, VB) and some SQL but now I'm learning so much more: REST, Asp.net core, nosql, GraphQL and more.
Even if I can't finish this project, still what I'm learning is even more valuable2 -
Today marked my first year of full time development work. I am really grateful to my workplace for giving me this opportunity instead of wasting away in education for 4+ more years. I've learnt so much already and can't wait for more 😁3

Well... instead of imposter syndrome I think I have something more alike "I can't fucking tell if I'm smarter than everyone around me or if I'm so dumb I have no clue what's going on"-syndrome.
And trying to be rational, I usually consider the second option to be more probabile... right?
Or maybe, the way my brain processes things is just so different from the people I know that It creates a layer of incomunicability, so that others can't understand my reasoning as much as I can't understand theirs.
The usual speaking-through-jargon-all-the-time trend I've encountered is also not helping.
So I strive daily to align myself to what's going on, trying not to slow anybody down, but that drains my mental energies so much I end up getting done so little... and then I realize _everybody_ has done a similar amount of work.
Are maybe my standards too high?
Or it's normal for teamwork to slow everybody down THIS much?
I used to work much better alone, or in teams with proper separation of tasks between people. Like - we agree on a common interface and then everybody goes his own way implementing his part, and as long as the contract is respected and nothing breaks, nobody cares about what's inside the boxes.
But I don't see it coming again anytime soon, and people seem to have an averagely-good opinion of my work. So well, if I get paid and things cruise along fine, there should be nothing to complain about.
Shit, I've let my flow of consciousness out.2 -
Dream.
When you sketch out a plan for a new project with lots of awesome ideas! Then you see how long this will take xD -
I took a day off work to go enjoy camping.
I've never felt so much anxiety about work at this time. I feel like I need to be working right now.4 -
Ok, so let's say someone walks into your office and it's after-hours and you have decided to have a go at yourself because you work too much and need to de-stress. My question is, do you quickly stop and ask them what they want, hoping they didn't see what you were doing, or do you just finish?8
-
My shit job sucks so much.
How bad, you ask?
Well, let me give you some perspective.
It sucks so bad, that I took a small freelance job ... not much $$$ ... and I actually liked it.
Normally they suck so bad and get so way out of hand that I end up regretting it. Work sucks so bad, it made me happy to something else. -
I'm working on a rev share game, something I think could be really good but I don't have the personal funds to really throw myself into. I've spent so much time finding a team and getting everyone on the same page, and they all seem really excited about the project.
Now, however, I'm having so much trouble getting them to put in any effort and meet deadlines. I've tried searching for more people but it's so hard to get people into a project like this, and all of the incentives and work I put into getting them to work are ineffective.
Managing a project is fucking hard.2 -
I realized I wouldn’t be great electronics engineer so I switched to computer enginering. Best decision of my life. I have so much comfortable work experience because I am natural in this job
-
Logging work in Jira, because it goes against the whole ethos of trusting people to get the work done when they have to log exactly how much time they spent on each individual story. It also doesnt account for pair programming. so 2 people log the same time and it looks like the story took twice as long. I’ll stop now because I’m precariously close to opening the “time based estimates” can of worms and thats for another rant.4

I used to be at a company where it was kind of expected that you worked long days, which made it quite difficult to balance work and private life. It got so out of control that I was even called to work while I was on my holiday. At first I started with shutting off my phone after work hours, but the real solution I found was moving away from that company.
Pretty much everyone at my new company just stops working when the clock hits 4 or 5 pm unless there is something critical that needs to be done. Seeing that also discourages me (and everyone else) from working long days. We are also quite open about our workload so if anyone thinks they’re overwhelmed they can find a relevant person to talk to and eventually a solution is found. The salary isn’t incredible, but the work/life balance and the benefits I get are just way better than getting paid more and living to work.
I think a lot of people go for the high salaries, most of the time disregarding the other part of the equation. If the company has a meh work culture with low regard to employees’ work/life balance, there isn’t much the employee can do besides finding a place to work with better wlb. I’d pick a great work/life balance and peace of mind to a high salary any day.1 -
There's an angular project at work.
I guess they know about as much about angular as I do (not much)
Because the error page isn't working, so when you get an error, you infinite loop and DDoS yourself.
It actually crashes my (admittedly subpart) desktop.
Guess I'll be learning how to fix that.19 -
Learning Image Processing,Deep Learning,Machine Learning,Data modeling, mining and etc related to and also work on them are so much easier than installing requiremnts, packages and tools related to them!2

Started making 5 figure income a month while working for myself. But have no friends and no interests to talk about besides work. Im a really bad case of "all work and no play makes the jack a dull boy". I spent last 8 years to achieve that. Is that good or bad? Im so much lost in my work that normal living sounds so boring at this point10

Guys I have so much work to do, and here I am procrastinating on devRant.
Anyone else here wasting there time? :D
(not really... DevRant is too cool to be considered a waste of time) -
I wake up with so much interest and enthusiasm for programming and tech. It all goes away when I start work at 9 AM. Everyday at 5 PM, I question my career choices. I don't have the interest from the beginning of the day nor the energy to do anything.4

So I've mentioned before that I'm pretty much the sole programmer for my robotics team. I'm on vacation for a week, and the other programmer has to take over.
Is it normal that, since I made the code work and wrote it almost all myself, I am fearful that she's gonna fuck it all up? I kind of want her to work on it slowly so I don't worry too much...3 -
I am so excited just after getting a job with a startup company and also received my first freelance gig only thing is I'm in my final year of college so amount of work is staggering but never been as excited to have so much work to do and help expand my skills and looking forward to ranting more which is most important

It's sad because Django is a really great framework, but I can't understand how their serializers work.
I finally tricked to make my own using JsonResponse and alternatives methods, but I can't see why there is "serializers", "DjangoJSONEncoder", "JsonResponse", "json.dumps" and so on...
The documentation doesn't explain much about it :/6 -

I was so tired of work last week and weather was so good I ended up in a bar.
People were so nice there so I got there second day in a row.
I met new nice people and cute female bartender who laughed from my jokes.
Was to drunk and tried so much to make her laugh that l forgot to get her number.
Got there next day asked bartender for her shifts, turned out it was last day of her work, she moved out from city for at least a year. So I got drunk again, and so on 5 days in a row.
Well that’s my life. Lucky me... again.
Karma is so funny I can’t laugh for some time anymore. -
Life is so much more fun when electricity is cut off and you still need to get day's worth of work done from home5

I just setup an apt-cache on my Macbook. Docker no longer takes 10 years to `apt-get install` when I'm at the coffee shop. This coffee shop is going to loose so much money now that my work is done faster.

When you have so much work
To do, but can't start any of it until you have the meetings about it. Meetings meetings meetings.2 -
Tried playing Dwarf Fortress again today.
So much information and learning.
I quickly went back to coding, seems to be far less work now.5 -
Co-workers with low commitment to a project are the worst to have. I am willing to trade technical depth for commitment in a team member any fucking day! Tech is easy to learn, work ethics not so much!3

So,
Im coming from PHP. I feel comfy around PHP.
I needed for other project GO lang (there is no library for what I need to do in PHP, and it's low level thing anyway)
I need dependency that is in form of modules.
Okay, so importing it (just writing import "github.com/blah/blah/v3/blah" as suggested in docs did not work. something something, not found)
Some googling later, I created go.mod file.
And all the hell broke lose. So I am trying to fix that using random stack overflow, IDE highlights entire project on red, go complains it can't find "./" while it looks for it in gopath not project files and claims it's remote repository.
Among other WTFnessness after adding go.mod it suddenly stopped fetching ANY dependencies (including stuff like github.com/pkg/errors ), so, that's fun...
I added go.mod before 9 AM.
It's 13 and Im still wrestling with this
I fail to connect the dots why go lang get's so much praise for it's apparently awesome or something package managment... I find "composer install", and have pretty much guarantee it will work, much easier to wrap my head around.
[edit]
forgot to mention that Im literally starting to learn go. Just cherry on top5 -
Apparently someone has already tried this.... devRant wouldn't let me post after so much work and even crashing... Twice....8

Thank you so much guys! They're here and now the hardest decision is where to place them 😂
Keep up the awesome work! @dfox -
Brainfog.
The state of wanting to practice coding, work on side project, or just try to understand github. However, your brain is running at dial-up speed and it feels like it takes too much effort to do so.

Was trying to pull an all nighter to meet a deadline and I accidentally fell asleep. I was also texting a new person I liked at the same time.
Dreamt I got so much work done and was still texting and got into an argument.
Woke up, but by the time I realized what happened and that I slept off I had already randomly texted something aggressive and insulted 😭
So yeah. Guess who got no work done and is probably gonna be single for life 😂 -
So much has happened, I've been learning things, I got robbed, I discovered I love test driven development, my laptop fell downstairs and is now screenless, I'm still on this project and still have not gotten the source or gone live, side work exists though so I get to make some more money, car engine needs to be overhauled, project extended still not in production. Send Help.

My daily commute to work is tiring me the fuck out, so much I wrote this little poem to my nagging friend just now..

I'm in no mood to think,
life currently flows by,
extinction, on the brink.
While I stand by,
and let things sink.

Now I'm "lowkeyemo-san".

OH MY GOD REFACTORING FEELS SO AWESOME
I just finished spent 4 weeks of crazy busy summer camps and I get back to a project I was working on.
Refactoring.gif
It feels so awesome to just effortlessly move stuff into methods and have it work pretty much first time.
To be fair I’m the only one working on this right now so I pretty much already knew the code but still holy cow it’s so much simpler now.
Moral of the story: Appreciate your time off and use it to unwind and let your mind wander to more creative heights before taking advantage of it after and only after you get back to the project1 -
Working on a project in which the work is planned around what I'm already good at, isn't much use.
Yes, the person who is paying for the project, would want only someone with experience (good experience) to work on the project.
But really I'd like to work on stuff which will be challenging (in terms of learning new stuff). So yes, I'd like to get paid for learning! -
Not sure it's so much about my vacation, but my boss' one. I look forward to uninterrupted days in the office where I can work without much small talk or having to explain my logic in great detail to a non-technical boss. So, when I heard he was away for a week, I thought, great, I'll have some time to focus...
Whoah there, not so fast. Turn up at work on Monday morning to find my boss online on Slack waiting to chat with me. He's on the other side of the world. It's the middle of the night for him. And he says I'm not allowed to work remotely... -
When you've got so much theory work to do for a Software Engineering final year that you've not actually developed anything for ages!
Can not wait to get to my graduate job!1 -
Need advice
Got placed at LnT Infotech through my college placements
Free-lanced at a company for four months and got a job offer from them with the same salary. But the work load is too much. There is no such thing as personal time. It's work 24*7. However, the exposure is good. For one of the projects I was the PM. Had dinner good exposure. But as I said, to much work. I lost quite some weight in the one month that I was the PM.
So now the problem is, should I join an MNC where my exposure will be terrible or a start-up where my personal life will be terrible3 -
Why old video games, kinda PS1 aesthetics, feel so much more magic and fun, and modern games feel like dystopia depression?
It has to do with child memories? I think there is something more to that. E.g. Colin mcrae 2.0 although has worst physics compared to later titles like Need For Speed, is so much more fun to play and get hooked to it (if example does not work for you, replace it accordingly).
I think there is something to do with the lower quality graphics that trigger imagination, but i am not sure. What is your opinion ?8 -
Everyone now works from home.. We don't even have a choice we need to work from home now.
Why does a flu during flu season scare people so much?? Honestly..12 -
I hate quotes/estimates so damn much
Quote too high and we don't win the work
Quote too low and I screw myself/other devs over
And then there's the fact that most initial quotes for an entire project are based off nothing but a few marketing slides from the potential client; we do re-estimate after winning the work and nailing down what the client actually wants, but obviously it can't be too far from the initial quote
And then there are other people on the company (not devs, obviously) who like to casually expand the scope without checking how much time it'll add4 -
So, right now we upload production code by means of FTP.
I said it would be better to use continuous deployment using Docker, but they said it was overkill (I work at a small company).
Because manually uploading by means of FTP is so much better right...6 -
Oof, I think I figured out why I'm frustrated with work stuff (not the actual work, just processes that surround it).
Project manager is an ESTJ and I'm INTJ. Our communication styles clash. Too much asinine processes to "make things efficient."
They need too much detail and don't understand what I am saying, I get annoyed with being bossed to the point of providing what I consider irrelevant, excessive details in a technical manner that they don't understand, because they're not a programmer, but insist on being provided these details. I know I just confuse people when I am forced to be as detailed as humanly possible. I don my best to summarise an issue in enough detail to help someone understand.
I've done some googling and saw some posts on Quora and reddit about people having similar issues, so it must be a thing?
It's so tiring. I don't know what to do. We've done MBTI workshops at work, because the company I work for sells MBTI assessments, but we've never gone in depth, and I've asked my manager if we can.4 -

So there's this remote guy on my team that basically doesn't do much and when it does fucks up. This is a guy with a lot experience but it doesn't seem even give a fuck. He doesn't pay attention to standups and he has more time than me in the project but doesn't know that much about it. There are rare times when he gives good ideas. However this happena so rarely that it is awful to work with him.1

Recently started reading about how businesses startup and grow. As much as I hate to admit it, their problems seem more daunting than technical challenges developers face. The nature of problems is so much more dynamic, unstructured and nuanced. After all, leading strangers to work towards your personal vision is kinda neat!1

I've lost the war. I'm happy with the comfort of my new chromecast but the amount of advertisements is really mayhem. Couldn't take it any longer.
So, i have YouTube premium now. You see? Ads do work! Also, it's not that weird to pay for smth you use so much. Why pay for Netflix and not YouTube?
I even spared some euro's by cancelling Netflix. Finally. Didn't watch a series for months. Fuck off wokies8 -

Tldr: intern here, I like staying in my workplace for longer than my work hours. Is it going to cause me trouble if i become a permanent employee?
Long story: So as per my previous rants i joined a startup as an android intern, company is of around 80-90 employees with many teams and standard/sad rules like 9 hr shift, 1 paid leave per month etc.
I was worried of these rules due to being a regular clg student and living very far from office, so i complained and got a little compensations like 7 hr work shift, few half days and work from home days, etc
Now the thing is : i actually have kind of started to like this work. Its been a month and i took around 12 days leave last month for papers, but marked some of them as wfh and half days, so deductions were not what i expected (although payslip is yet to come, which would have given a better explaination). But overall Pay is decent, work environment is chill ( people work in teams here, but since am the only android dev, i got no timelines, or tech leads. Just the ceo, whom i send a daily progress message), there are good refreshments available and after papers, i am pretty much free.
So I like staying here for longer hours like 8, or 8.30 hours. My family is also working, so they are usually not much worried, tho my mom starts sending messages when i leave after 7. But this friend of mine, keeps saying "its wrong, your managers are gonna call you weak and would force you to work for more hours when they notice you can come for 9 hours , etc"
So am i doing the wrong thing here?3 -
Some days I hate my work - other days I love it. Usually what happens is I make some poor decision that I have to live with and get super angry with myself, feel my colleagues are disappointed, go home, feel sad, sleep, go back, talk to them about it and try to learn from my mistakes - and then I'm back at loving work. Repeat. Software development is so much more than writing code.

I work mostly as freelance, so I really dislike having to explain how am I doing thing to a client.
Some ask me to explain what is my logic, and when they don't understand(most of the time) I have that 'sigh' moment where you just want to work on a company where you are tasked with something and does not have to educate people about your method of development (at least not much)2 -

So, I'm bored at work (contract ends in one month and finished everything I could do), so I started searching for a new flat for September.
In France we have a website called "LeBonCoin" which is like craigslist, people post available flats.
But, being a nerd, instead of searching manually (peasants) (and also because I have so much free time on my hands), I coded a web scrapper in Python. It gets all the info (monthly rent, description,...)
So far so good, now need a way to make it calculate the distance between the flat and my next work place (for biking), and the city center.3 -
Winter is coming :/
8 hours days, you get up and it’s dark, sun is shining when you’re working and when you finish work it’s dark again.
Moreover I have lots of work so I usually only work, eat, sleep, repeat.
I downloaded 10 movies to watch during my working hours, so I don’t get paranoid to much and see some fake people on tv. Well fml, looks like I was born to work till death, might be first karoshi in my country. Found in bed with laptop, opened intellij and terminal, finger on enter button and in the terminal ./deploy.sh pending for new release. Hope everything will clear before new year and I can manage to clear my todo list. It’s last time I’m saying it’s last time I take so much work instead of sorting out my personal life. So I found put what is maladaptive daydream is. I always had it. Recently when I experienced it again, I tried to understand, and I got to a lot of things about it. Researches on handling it are very new and doesn't provide much support but I will deal with it. This podcast talks about it, I can relate to everything but the suicide part:
https://podcasts.google.com/feed/...
In short, when you daydream so much that you have very detailed daydreams and it interrupts your work, your relationships etc. that's when daydreaming becomes maladaptive. As so many people have it but it is not talked about it much, I wanted to put this post on.
I will try to control it with mindfulness and taking care of my body. I hope it will work.4 -

So I was looking for an internship online and I came across this. How can someone expect so much from a student? The stipend is only (₹5000) i. e. $70/month.
Most of the companies on this site are basically treating jobs as student internships looking to get work done at cheap rates. -
So I work in a so called agile team of 5 people, where on of the members has the role of tester. Now this person doesn't have much technical experience, if any, in regards to coding, so the purpose of the tester is primarily to fo automated UI tests and system testing. Am I in the wrong for questioning the importance and relevance of this role, or is it just because in my previous work experience, the developers had the responsibility for testing whatever was made, and I just have to get used to this new way of working?9

Got the update to Android Oreo on my S7 edge yesterday.
I love it. It made my phone work so much faster(really, so much!). Everything is smoother and new cool featured have been added, the UI looks incredybly modern and nice.
But there is one BIG disadvantage.
The batteryusage is terrible now. In bad times my phone lost 7%-8% in a half an our. I heard that they had the same issue when the s8 got the update to android oreo.

I used to have so much time and spent hours upon hours coding and learning. Now I find it so tiring and like my brain is turning to mush.12 -
Yay! Let's go to this 'IT day' event with the whole company to do some mandatory epibrating the whole day. I have so much work to do... Oh well, they even pay me a lot to go there but it sucks anyways.
-
Why everytime we have meetings with management people, I think these people are so disconnected with their reality, they look so much indulged in their work. Whenever there is a meeting with them I get anxious thinking they might get to know I am a weak developer.
The language is same for everyone, it looks fake and looking at this makes me anxious.
Anyone feels the same? I need help.5 -
Just started working on Alexa skills ,
And I must say , feel like a dog lost in a pool of balls plastic balls, while am chained to a pole. So much I can do.. but there’s no documentation as to how things work
All the docs available are old, and I didn’t really understand how things are working5 -
Sometimes as an intern I legitimately have no work to do and I feel awful about it. Sitting here twiddling my thumbs makes me feel like I'm doing something wrong. You can only ask for work so much... Trying to find things on our backlog to work on but they're all unfinished/not ready or too verbose / require too much for me to take on.
Mmmmehhhh I don't know what to dooooo3 -
The small company I work for has FINALLY decided to start moving towards the MEAN stack, in which I was overly thrilled! However they have started to regress because "cold fusion is so much easier to write"
-
I’m so glad I work at a company without a dev ops... it’s so much smoother and money isn’t wasted on a non engineer, or someone who can’t jump in and assist where needed.
We have a weekly team meeting including the mech, elec and software guys... then we have a weekly open issue meeting per project only those on the project go to. We all know what we need to do individually and we just get it done... no need for the middle man dev ops to divide up tasks and shit.. we hear the issues straight from the product owners and get to work... we don’t have defined structured scrums and burn downs...it’s very agile tho.. much like how engineers 40 years ago achieved things. It’s quite awesome.6 -
It’s 14:30 and I’ve only just opened SQL Management Studio and Visual Studio after being at work since 9am. Sometimes I hate being a team manager... so much shit shovelling and not enough fun work1
-
iTerm2 & Bash-It. iTerm coz of the split panes, paste history, undo kill session etc so much helpful!! And bash-it gives me so many things, completions, aliases which makes the work a breeze, gpom does a "git push origin master" and many more like these :)
-
Here’s something I REALLYY love guys… so when a developer spends a lot of project time on this crucial feature… and totally heads down right so he doesn’t ask for help… AT ALL right? And then we get the work deployed bc they said it’s all done right… and it’s like TOTALLY broken… and the client is like “wHy iS It BrOkeN?!?” and then I have to COMPLETELY refactor and rework it because its all a shark-shit-nado fuckin mess right? I love it SO MUCH guys… like UGH I AM SO HAPPY!!!
-
I’m trying to update a job posting so that it’s not complete BS and deters juniors from applying... but honestly this is so tough... no wonder these posting get so much bs in them...
Maybe devRant community can help be tackle this conundrum.
I am looking for a junior ml engineer. Basically somebody I can offload a bunch of easy menial tasks like “helping data scientists debug their docker containers”, “integrating with 3rd party REST APIs some of our models for governance”, “extend/debug our ci”, “write some preprocessing functions for raw data”. I’m not expecting the person to know any of the tech we are using, but they should at least be competent enough to google what “docker is” or how GitHub actions work. I’ll be reviewing their work anyhow. Also the person should be able to speak to data scientists on topics relating to accuracy metrics and mode inputs/outputs (not so much the deep-end of how the models work).
In my opinion i need either a “mathy person who loves to code” (like me) or a “techy person who’s interested in data science”.
What do you think is a reasonable request for credentials/experience?5 -
Fucking hate shopify,
Fucking hate designers who just keep stacking work apart from original design
I loved front end but last job made me hate it so much.
Damn those clients -
if you work at some company, how much do you earn per month?
note: you are anonymous; no one knows who you are; no one knows what company you work for - so feel free to be honest ;)20 -
Client gave late template for website and system, after that fpdf for live site wont work, too much to do so little time.
-
Had so much fun doing crowd-programming to troubleshoot an issue at work yesterday! Because, you know, three is a crowd. ;-)
-
This isn't so much of a rant, but it is about interviews.
I have interviews in the coming weeks for internships/work experience with local game studios and software companies
Does anybody have any tips for a newbie to working in the industry. What I should expect from the interview what they might be looking for and so on.
Thanks6 -
I'm so fucking done 😔
consoleapi on windows and control codes + termios on linux
But what about ansi terminals on windows :(
I can't find a good way to interface with them, termios obviously won't work
My brain hurts so much but I cannot have another failed project. Fucking obsolete bodged together amateur software 😔14 -
so many things happened this week.
First I told my colleague about torent :P she doesn't know what is it . Hope she enjoy much more content now :)
Second I was working with a client and she is herself a developer and she works like 24 hours. During lock-down she hardly slept for 4-5 hours and I came to know this week that she is 72 years old. I mean omfg in this age she is doing code and so much work :) that is indeed fucking awesome1 -
Visual studio. The lockups are incredibly annoying, the codebase's dependency on its toolset is worrying, and the inability for me to customize it deeply conflicts with how I work as a developer. It costs so much and yet the man hour cost of moving our codebase out of it is way more, so we are trapped
-
I'm in my first year of college, it's so much work and I just feel so tired but I'm really loving it (I just get bothered by how my classmates talk so much BS on our whatsapp group). nothing like some dig dug to relax2
-
I have zero knowledge with Android development. I started to mess around with react Native these days. And so much time on configuring the environment of everything... Emulator, SDK, ADV... Still doesn't work... Spending hours and days waiting for a miracle. And then the emulator launched. Thanks God.7
-
Why is it so that I have 8 hours to work, but find myself to only be productive in the last 2 hours... I find it difficult to work in the mornings, to much chaos up in my head.
I'll loose the job if I continue so, any tips?3 -
My web background us in PHP, with some minor experience in ASP.NET, so I wasn't expecting to have much trouble when I joined this company to work as a web programmer.
Turns out the entire freaking website is written in ASP classic.3 -
Been stretched between two projects for three weeks and now one is behind (due to too much pressure from the other).
I have to work tonight and Saturday to catch up or my vacation next week is cancelled.
The vacation i requested because I'm so overworked the last few weeks.1 -
I knew I wanted to be a dev in 10th grade when my Chem teacher told me about the work environment & pay at Google. When I actually started learning to code, it was so much fun & the whole Google thing just seems like an added perk if I make it there.
(Apple wasn't quite the place for me) -
So I think I need more goats or I need to get my computer in to a therapist's office. Either way, I have decided that my problem is fixed. In that rather than addressing the root cause I have attached a bandaid that will work as long as the customer has much less time than me.3
-
Thanks google for making it so fucking damn difficult to authenticate G Apps users and check their groups/org unit. Makes my fucking work so much harder! To make matters worse you decided that that if I want to get the information in a seprate call I have to use a seprate admin account to do it because apparently letting the user see it is to fucking hard.
-
When you get more managerial corrections on your projects and approaches to things than your coworkers do BECAUSE YOUR WORK IS SO MUCH HARDER AND MORE TECHNICAL THAN EVERYONE ELSE’S but you still end up looking dumb because you’re the only one being corrected on stuff.
-
I got one task left... One algorithm to solve... That's the second day I'm on it... And I need to sleep so much... Fix yourself please, let me write random lines and please work...1
-
I don't know why GNOME decided to mess their keyboard layout handling at some point. All of their US INTL keyboard variants don't work one way or another.
So much for purple Java mainstack….
setxkbmap was, always the way to go. -
DAMN!! I feel like quitting, I am fucking tired... much work than I could handle.
fucking no options...
the worst part is the fucking poor documentation, have to hit my head on the damn wall, every time I encounter an error.
2 weeks to go...
184 files to customize!
damn, why does life has to be fucking so hard!1 -
Facebook and Buzzfeed :(
I kept checking every notification which pulled me in to a black hole of surfing and I ended up using 2 or so hours on Facebook and Internet stuff a day (this was only at work so my days got so long because I had to stay longer and actually do my job). Found out I was addicted, read some articles about work productivity and how to be more effective at work, deleted social apps from my phone and only check notifications once a day, and now my days are much shorter and I actually feel relieved and free :) -
If AI steal all dev jobs, it's probably already taken pretty much all other jobs too. So I guess we will all live work-free, with robots doing all the stuff and we get to enjoy life4
-
So the guy across me at work goes KLATIKY KLAK in the keyboard n i always wondered why
coz we're mid/senior devs, there isnt that much to type usually
saw his screen a bit ago n the nigga typing/copying code from ChatGPT 😩2 -
c3tools
I want to finish it so badly. I have everything I just need time.
JJittai
Every time I see the code I wanna dance. I want to work on that so much but I haven't in a long time, I want to refactor everything (I've changed a lot in that time), it will be so delicious.
If you are curious about them you can see them in my github account.
And of course the rest but with these I'd be so satisfied. -
The company i work for force me to work on two projects daily. I have to report to one of the client daily. And another client weekly. This is so much stress, I think my efficiency spoils completely, i can't be productive at work. I don't know what to do now. Do you guys have any suggestions ?4

Being at college and unemployed
Things are going great, learned much and thinking I'm ready to work.
First job
WebDev, minimum wage, still at college but not learning so much because of time.
Quit because I didn't receive two paychecks out of three months I worked there.
Second job
working with banks, java but only old editions 6 and down, mostly maintaining lots of old code. Three months contract is expiring, I have student debt and really don't want to work here but it seems to me I don't have a different option5 -
I spent last week trying to figure out estimates about how much time we'll spend in this quarter's project - like, 3 days on the schema, 4 days on the API, 5 days on the GUI etc. Why does management think that each part of the project is separate? Oh I forgot, they're management. I wonder how much work I could've done if management wasn't so obsessed in knowing metadata about the project instead of doing the project itself 🤔2
-
I used to work in the culture and entertainment field. Some work days during festivals and tours were long. It wasn’t uncommon for me to work 24h+ straight, but I think the longest uninterrupted work session was during the first iteration of a big music festival, where I ended up doing a 53h (to my recollection) day, then taking a 3h nap, and continuing for another several hours. Dev work is so much easier comparatively in that regard - and the money’s better.
-
The moment you realize yoh actually have to work for school but programming is so much more fun!!!2
-
Went to girlfriends family. Tablet not functional (screen doesn't work anymore), laptop stayed at home.
So smartphone is my only connection to Internet.
I would like to code something so much...
I think I've now read every rant here...5 -
"Ultimate" success for a dev?
I don't know what that would be, so I'll be answering that around my experience.
Start really poor, so when you start making good money, you value and appreciate it.
Work for a company (Startup/MNC doesn't matter), and build your network with people/clients.
Work really hard in the beginning era and fail as much as possible.
Quit said company and build your own client-base, cutting the middle men out of the equation.
Work on your terms after that, remotely obviously.
Years down the line, come up with your own idea and start a company which makes enough money to retire with ease, not worrying about saving up for retirement. -
I'm so tired when I got up. Didn't sleep much last night. Working on a Sunday night till 2AM because I did not work the week on the project I was given.
This is not happening for the first time, I sleep late around 3AM to do my work, as day is too noisy and distracting. Attend some meetings during the day and get lazy in the evenings. Work during nights and then the next day I'm all tired for daily stand up.
How do you people tackle this schedule? I need serious advices.5 -
So I fell for the vim meme some weeks ago and am now very used to it, but I think I'm still less productive than I was before. The problem is that I can't just go back to a bloated IDE.
So now I'm sitting here, unsatisfied with every editor, bothering so much I don't do my work.
I guess I'll just have to configure it more to my needs and learn some more features but still do I kinda regret switching.4 -
I feel often not that I have the energy to program after work, but when I come in here, I get so much inspiration again! thanks!
-
Picked up the latest version of Test Driven Development work Python. Haven't done much test driven development so time to change that .
-
this all started with VIM,
I now have custom a .bashrc, a custom .tmux.conf, few AHK stuffs, I am considering on using qute browser full time.
and for the past 14 days I've been configuring so much that I've only 2 commits on the actual work done.3 -
So, an employee at work told me that her daughter's laptop is acting strange and I said I would diagnose it for her. I was suppose to do it today but, her daughter left it at school, so I am going to work on it Saturday.
I was wondering, how much should I charge her if I wanted to get payed?1 -
Taking work-related tasks as personal challenges and conquering them has worked well for me so far.
Increases the level of contempt you get from work and also makes working so much more fun. -
Ubuntu 🤬
only releasing amd64 image !! , supporting an instruction set architecture does not mean code is optimised for other microarchitecture
i thought linux distributions are do less and do way better than others, so why so much bloatware!!!.
ideally best way is to compile your own kernel and add minimal gui support as required, too much work !!!
also just a heads-up if you are using Catalina use virtual-box 6.0.22
also vivado 2019.2 is suable with ubuntu 18.04 + lightdm , remove that gnome shit15 -
My current work...
3 years of formation...
3 years of experience...
And I didn't know the basics to operate the machines used here.
Also I'm only getting minimum wage and I'm a temp so fuck it. I already knew to much for what I'm paid.
Also...
Extra formation for the next job :p -
Android DevStudio. So much work for a simple button! Even worse when you're trying to call API and explicitly return a type of data that you need.
-
I’m in a tough spot - I’m completely overloaded with sysadmin type work (server upgrades, firewall and vendor coordination, security, password maintenance) that I don’t have time to complete any programming work assigned to me. My bosses are aware and have done their best to help, but I just can’t keep up (have two young kids too and just can’t work nights anymore without trouble at home). My bosses have been great, so I feel terrible about this, but I think I’m going to have to look for another employer, I can’t do this anymore. Am I a horrible person to leave them with so much work even though they tried to help me?8
-
I noted music is disaster for my work. It distracts I loose my focus and efficiency decrease also.
mood swingings when I listen too much music I have a hated feeling l. So I decided to quite listening music during work.
It may help me in the rest of thr time when I am alone and need to really distress myself3 -
Working on an enhancement for a legacy product that's been in the industry for about fifteen years... The situation is that I fix one defect and give more pop up. I'm frustrated so much that I give up twenty times a day.
Please tell me that's how you work on legacy software 😔8 -
Do any of you fine people work somewhere where salaries are transparent?
By which I mean, everyone knows (or is able to find out) what everyone else earns
If so, how does it work? Whilst I'm not too bothered how much my colleagues earn (unless it's an order of magnitude more than me or something), I know some people definitely would be4 -
Another con for working at the office instead of remotely: I WANT TO FART AND SHIT SO MUCH BUT CANT CZ OF MY COWORKERS. WHY WORK IN OFFICE BRUH I WANT FROM HOME5
-
Anyone else having so much problems using create-react-app, typescript, styled-components and storybook?
It fells like im playing the lottery here and most of it doesnt reliable work.2 -
So much dead code. Things that are not used anymore. Things that are expected to work, but don’t because of website redesign. Does it need to be fixed if no one reports it broken? Just so much dead code.💀1
-
Working from 7:00 to 15:00,after work don't have that much time to workout, so I try ti weighted push-ups every minute or so from 2pm till 3..biggest problem is when the code embraces me and I forget that I should work out a bit.. And yes, I work from home3
-
I got an idea about my at-job project and I wanted to try it out at home. First, I need to set up my environment.... 20 minutes later maven is still downloading dependencies. Size of ~/.m2 > 1G. So much for unpaid voluntary work.
-
Why do IT Indians tend to lie so much? So many indian freelancer transform into John from USA and work together with a team of highly skilled specialists that studied in the most Elite universities in the world6
-
I just dont. I love my work so I work way to much: fulltime Job as dev project lead in a big advertisment Company, additional to that i work part time as a teacher in a school for it students (15h/week) and then I have 2 customers as freelancer for the weekends :)2
-
hr- "so why are looking to switch from X"
me- "well i currently work in b2b domain amd i really want to work on B2C product where millions of users are being impacted"
hr- "yeah we also have premium companies as users and b2b work is not much different than b2c. what else?"
me- "uh umm, also i saw the opening for a journalism company , so i was very tempted to apply as i always
wanted to work for jo-"
hr- "the opening is for p, a subdomain of our company which is a music player"
me- "umm that's okay. i guess i like listening to music as well 😅 . also i wanted to work nearby to my home"
hr- "yeah that's the real reason. your current company is asking you to come to their city"
me- "no they are still remote!" (they aren't)
hr- "i will connect you with another person. please be negotiable"
🥺😭 mann i am so much out of the game i am embarrassing myself over a phone call. can't even answer a stupid why question4 -
Appraisals are pretty insightful times. I wanted to check how much work I do as compared to others in the team. So, I tried to pull up number of pull requests created by me and others in the team. And to my surprise, I create 4x(I created about 850 pull requests) more pull requests than the next contributor(200 pull requests). I knew in general I was doing more work and much faster, but this is just too much.
I know number of pull requests is not an indicator for the amount of work done by anybody, but I had this feeling as well that I was doing more than others. I often see other members of the team not putting that much effort, and rather have a relaxed approach to getting work done. They pick one ticket and take the whole week to complete it slowly. While I hustle to get as much done as possible.
As far as the appraisals go, I am kind of laid back in terms of contributing towards overall organization which is now getting more weighted for my appraisal. So, despite me doing quite a lot of work, I am getting the appraisal at par with others in the team.
So, its kind of feels a little bit uncomfortable.3 -
When I tuned angry birds with spotify and made the speed the beat of the song.
App didn't work out but who cares. Had so much f*cking fun building it. -
So I had this Case tools lab during my 5th semester of college and they asked everyone to do a project. Me hoping that they will see the project and appreciate the work, did a good one and I spent day and night on it. Then came the finals. The fucking teacher who was asked to evaluate me didn't even open my project properly and just entered the marks just seeing the home page. It was that fucking day that I hated my college so much. Now I don't spend too much time on projects for my college. Worst Dev experience!
-
Why is it always so much easier to just let them wait til the fix is live vs trying to explain a temp work around?
-
Fellow ranters I have a question.
Do any of you have experience of going from a consultant job to working as a developer for a product company, where the thing you're developing is the actual product and not just some side thing (like a infrastructure company having a website for example).
If so, how did the experiences differ from one another?
I'm considering switching positions to a SaaS company and I'm just wondering how much of all the consultant based BS that I'm constantly stressing over will be erased if I go there.
My biggest gripes about work in my few years of developing have been the lack of team work, really ill formed requirements, low knowledge of the codebase among coworkers and just badly written code bases.
I wonder how much of this stuff is just the nature of the work and how much could be traced back to developers pushing out shitty stuff due to hourly billing, people leaving several times a year.6 -
!Rant
So much work to do and such little time, and i am only a software enginner student. Well i guess this is welcome to the devs world.
(I need a stress ball so bad 😭) -
https://adventofcode.com/2021
Anyone ? ;p so far I like little code every day not related to work and some of "tasks" are pretty interesting (Ok, I mostly brute force everything, but it can be done so much better!)5 -
i just want to say i dont like material ui because customizing it is so painful . bootstrap is so much breeze to work with.
-
The fuck symfony again - passwords migration - no error but does not work. One guy in the comment wrote what fixed - I had wrong configuration. Why it cannot give fucking error when the configuration is wrong. And I did not see even in documentation that I need to do that. I do not know if symfony really deserves so much popularity if it wastes so much time. Checked my tracker - I have spent about 13 hours for symfony upgrade from I think 5.1 to 5.3 and password migration.
-
I’m worried, as I’m sure many of you are about covid 19 and work drying up. I can work from home but who’s gonna want to get a new site or app done now with so much uncertainty!1
