Just because I'm a programmer doesn't mean I'm some nerd that watches anime, relishes in video games, and spends more time around computers than around girls!
Even though that's all true...10 -
How did I learn how to program?
I didn't. I'm still learning ☺.
We will never be done learning.
That's the beauty of it all.3 -
Days and days, 5+ hours later I finally figured out the issue.
The client is just fucking retarded, that's all.
5+ hours of my life wasted, much awesome!9 -
Someone steals my external monitor.
me: That's my monitor
thief: No its mine. See all my desktop icons are there.
me: speechless2 -
I found this while I was lazily internetting and my first thought was 'okay, that's most definitely a hack!'.
Someone has actually built a hack for all the world to see!19 -
Notepad++: An update package is available, do you want to download it?
Me: Maybe next time
Notepad++: Sure, that's what they all say3 -
When my programmer boyfriend talks about his code, all I say is "That's so cool, babe," because I have no idea what he's even talking about.
He could be telling me he blew up a server.
"That's so cool, babe."
(I love you, though, darling x)9 -
Boss: I need this page to behave in a completely new way.
Me: that's all fine and dandy but it requires a rewrite.
Boss: nah just look man, it's really simple all I want is blah, blah blah...
I'm too tired for this shit5 -
From Mr Robot
“Most coders think debugging hardware is about fixing a mistake.
But that's bullshit.
Debugging’s actually all about finding the bug.
About understanding why the bug was there to begin with.
About knowing that it’s existence was no accident.”
— ELLIOT1 -
A user opened an issue on Github saying something doesn't compile. Fair enough, it didn't.
Another user comments saying "I have the exact same issue but after the program launches"
Bitch no, that's not the same issue. Not at all.4 -
That feeling of when you finish a year long project, showing it off to family and getting a "huh that's it?" response. I just poured all being into this, it's okay. 😐3

We keep ranting about managers, here is something good about mine. He increased my salary a 100% of my current. Which is freaking awesome.
That's all have a good day. ☺️6 -
*Makes joke in dev community*
RandomGuy: "well actually, that's not correct. The truth is blah blah blah"
Can you please just for like 5mins enjoy the joke and have a laugh?
All you're doing is stroking your own ego.3 -
Yet another someone just contacted me about having a "great idea for an app".
That's a justified rant all by itself.7 -
Website on sign off.
Client: yeah I just updated all the content on the old site but that's ok you can just copy and paste it, right?
Currently trying to formulate a reply that doesn't start with the words "For fuck sake..."8 -
Coworker: This guy's computer is completely messed up...
Me: What? Why?
Coworker: So he installed some virus...
Me: Yeah? And...?
Coworker: And apparently it changed all certificates for antivirus programs into Untrusted Certificates - so he can't install anything that could remove the virus!
Me: That's horrifying..undefined it support anyone else run into this? virus creators are dank sometimes i hate customers...7 -
Me when my teacher told us we're only gonna learn about Microsoft Server because that's all we need12
-
Just wanted to say cheers to all those coders among you who make sure their login is encrypted, their passwords are hashed and salted, their codes are tested and their forms are code injection safe.
No client will understand what you did, so take my props for it! After all, its our responsibility to make sure software is secure. That's all :) -
The problem with C++ is that all of your friends can see your private parts.
That's not a problem, it's a feature!9 -
Fixed a project for a collegue.
Him: How did you fix things, what's the process?
Me: Click stuff and press Buttons randomly until it works.
Him: ... That's all you did?
Me: Yup, the rest is just experience. -
Me: Hey, Android, how do I do [abc]?
Android: Oh, that's actually quite easy! All you need is permissi..
Me: Oh, you know what, nevermind. I'd rather fuck an industrial fan.5 -
Friend: "if it's a CLOUD server... What happens to all that data when it rains? I don't think that's too secure.🤔"
Me:"..."

"I can't"7 -

Of all people that apply for a job at our company, 95% can't write a loop that counts from 1 to 10.
And if that's not bad enough: our bosses state "we shouldn't ask such difficult tasks."18 -
Me when I'm updating my projects:
"I put some new code in,
I took some old code out,
I put some new code in and I tested it all out, I fixed some major bugs and I pushed the update out. That's what it's all about!"5 -
At laptop, building a complex task and have my Atom editor opened. Client arrived at my desk.
"That's why the development is so slow. You have to paint all those words."3 -
I just ran a batch rename script in the console. What's so bad about this? I forgot that I had closed the previous console, which caused Win+4 to open a new one at the default location. Which is my home folder.
"Desktop"? Nah, you mean "file4.png". "Downloads"? No, that's "file6.png". "rclonesync-V2-master"? That's "file19.png" now.
Luckily I was able to restore it all, except for one folder, containing unreadable files with names like "data_0". I hope I didn't need that. And luckily it skipped all hidden files and folders.3 -
I'm sitting here writing a page permission control system in PHP at my internship when a fellow intern (he does something with networking) comes to me showing his first line of PHP being all proud :). I'm really proud of him because that's how we all started, didn't we!3
-
166 lines of if else hell just to decide between prod and sandbox.
Run the same query multiple times to get the same data.
And that's all written by our code review team lead.
What a mess.2 -
Fuck mysql charset shit. Pretty easy to forgot setting charset in server side config file. And after creating several databases/tables, boom! All in latin1. That's just so convenient. are you kidding me? Why would any modern database have their default charset to be latin1??? rather than utf8? Oh, just forgot again, that's utf8fuckingmb4 on mysql land.6
-
I love Json format. It is so simple, powerful, easy to read and all that good stuffs. There is only one thing I wish Json could support, that's commenting.13
-
Remember that fine girl that used to bedwet & was dirty in high school.
Then you met her recently, all looking hot & steamy.
That's PHP!
Stolen from the @unicodedeveloper om twitter2 -
"So, you will stay in a chair all day doing 'clickety click'. That's not a job."
(My mother, circa 1990)😲
Yes, I'm old... My first program was written in a stone table with a chisel😁1 -
Arts and crafts: developer version.
Context: spent all day making an ER diagram from an awful SQL query I was handed. Got sick of asking for it from the contractor who made the DB.
Yes, that's one query.25 -
"There were a lot of complaints about missing grades" well, yes. That's what happens when you make me grade all 60 submissions every week while I work 10-12 hours a day at my other job, on average.17
-
As a human being, you're multithreaded. You can type with multiple fingers, you can drive and hold a conversation at the same time. The only blocking function we have to deal with is sneezing, where all current activity must be suspended for the duration of the sneeze. That's pretty annoying, especially when you're driving and trying to hold a conversation. You don't want to write code that's sneezy.8
-
Client: "Here's a report that we got another company to do, showing everything that's wrong with the site."
* Report shows all suggestions that I originally made and they shot down *
Me: *facepalm* -
Problem 1: that's literally all of steam
Problem 2: they don't police it now
Problem 3: just... All of this21 -
Working from home now check out the new setup. All that's missing is some devRant swag "wink wink nuge nuge know what i mean yes yes ....." Let me know what you think.3

Best mentoring advice I've gotten:
In your career you'll meet three kinds of people.
1) Nice people
2) Indifferent people
3) Not nice people
Treat them all in the same way. That's professionalism. -
All fun and games until you inherit a legacy c project with 30k+ lines of code and a habit of leaking memory and segfaulting intermittently.
That's my worst nightmare at least.3 -
If you're sick, just type "I'm feeling sick today"
Don't give a full paragraph of all the drugs you're talking and all your symptoms. That's just cringe.5 -
It's just sick how managers boast about how their programmers aren't getting sleep enough/at all due to nonstop coding.
That's not actually something to be proud of, CAUSE IT SHOWS HOW INEFFICIENT YOU ARE AT, I don't know... MANAGING?4 -
Microsoft admits they were hacked. Explains how it worked and what happened. No big deal. companies get hacked. That's life.
Indirectly admits that all of their customer support agents have access to your inbox.
Cool. Deleting my Outlook email. Thanks guys.9 -
I guess the best feature of devRant is that the homepage, where we see all the rants, does not show who posted each rant. It just shows the rants. That's it. Great to see the app is "rant centric" and not "user centric".3
-
When I code for myself I do all the naming in German only. Mainly because that's how I can see directly if that stupid mess is done by me or the framework.9
-
As 22.2.22 is coming to an end, I've sent an email to request for another PhD position.
That's all.
Wish me luck.5 -
It is time. I have to admit it.
I don't understand Git.
I just memorized some basic commands: git commit, git push, git push -u origin master, git clone, git checkout [-B], git merge. That's it, that's the full list. I use them like they're some kind of magic spells that do what I need. Everything else, those intricacies like rebasing, resetting, HEAD and all that shit, is beyond me.
I'm not a real programmer. Real programmers know Git.30 -
I just spent 2 hours configuring my parents' new Huawei wifi router using my phone's Google translate because the UI is all Chinese.
'oh so that's why it was cheaper'10 -
Me: Please don't commit the binaries
PM: We need to commit all the files so we can track process
Me: that's not how it works!2 -
Dev deploys new CSS.
Client: I can't see the changes PANIC.
Dev: clear your cache!
Client: oh that's better. Now can we do that for all user?
Dev:😱4 -
That's it. That's all I have for my home server setup. I don't even know why we have that sticky red thing, but today it came handy. And now I can SSH anytime I want, it's never going get shutdown 😂1
-
You know how we all get frustrated with new clients who don't provide enough information or detailed background of what the last dev did or tried?
Careful what you wish for. Just took on a new client who has sent 3 separate Word docs, all organized and color coded and fully detailed with the website's life history. All 24 pages of it.
We are supposed to fix the checkout flow and organize the download directory. That's all. -
I can't work because someone else broke the build and they're in meetings all day.
That's how you know it's real Enterprise development. -
Designer: "And you know what we could do? We could make all the information be available anywhere the client wants. It's all in the cloud!"
PM: "Yeah! That's brilliant!" (High fives all around)
That's one day after a visit to a client saying they cannot rely on their internet connection. -
Another shitty shitty day.
That's all I wanted to post. Don't ask or comment or bother.
Keep scrolling.. thank you!11 -

That's where the missing ones go to have fun.5 -
I currently have 5168 node_modules folders on my computer.
Not 5168 folders inside node_modules, but 5168 actual node_modules folders.
That's all. That's the rant.13 -
When you accidentally run " rm -rf * " in the directory containing ALL you projects, not in the directory of a single project.
That's right. You just encountered THE DEATH STAR.9 -
Ffs, I just want to get myself a goddamn domain, why is every registrar so shitty? Each of them has a major downside that makes me go away from their site! Bad payment options, way too high prices for a domain after a year, ...18
-
Looks great. That's all now set for my WhatsApp profile pic no more hassle on that. Thanks devRant for the awesome avarter.
-
Just wanted everyone to know that I did a find and replace all in my project and it actually worked as intended.
That's all.8 -
Not sure if this counts as a dumb request but:
Customer- There are too many tasks, we need a 'SELECT ALL' button to complete everything easily
Me- sure that's easy to add
(After addition)
Customer- people are completing the tasks too fast! We need to get rid of the select all !
Ugh5 -
I don't get all the amazement etc people show when they find out that I don't use services like WhatsApp, Instagram, Gmail, Outlook, Google etc, why would it be 'weird' to want control over who has/owns your data? That's not being fucking paranoid, that's being conscious about who you give your data to.1
-
First rant (well, first on devRant anyway)! So, I'm working on a project to refactor a decade old codebase so that all references to ip addresses are in config. It sucks. But I did find an ascii art fish in an old cron script, so that's something.9
-
Oh fuck.... someone in my group decided to write a script and place it on boot of the system.
As soon as I turn on the system , a script was automatically running in the background which override all rows in all tables of the database that's says "I fucking quit"
As a freelancer, I witness shit like this all the time.4 -
Regarding my last rant:
I have all my 3 Raspberrys set up for seti@home now, reporting to twitter and my own "surveillance" system for them.
The system is still ugly, the code is ugly but that's getting improved next!4 -
My colleague does not use git (well, not for much), hates all external frameworks, and when he sees my code he tells me "that's not how I would have done this", every single goddamn time. Aaand we are the only two developers in our company.4
-
To the cunts who use single character aliases for their SQL queries table joins... Suck my throbbing dick till you choke on it and die....
That's all... back to workrant name your shit properly cunts sql alias suck a dick single character sql assholes cheap cunts die10 -
Being paid as a 'junior software developer' at the average salary for that with all these responsibilities
That's a funny joke13 -
Why do people mix JS vanilla with framework syntax? That's horrible.
Why do people use jQuery anyways? There's no need at all anymore. It is just dumb JS for dumb devs.
Did that trigger you? - well....7 -
Kubernetes this. Kubernetes that. New tech this. New tech that. Let's ask developers to spend all their time on learning everything instead of concentrating on the fucking business problem that's no where related to Kubernetes or any fucking specific technology for many companies22
-
Apparently I am a mental patient to my mom, who sits in front of the computer every day, doesn't have a social life and doesn't have a future.
That's all because I don't want to attend her friend's wedding :(2 -
I don't mind ads in general, I just hate that they provide tracking capabilities. That's why I block all of them. (No, still haven't found a privacy friendly advertisement provider/platform)4
-
Oh, the requirements completely changed? That's cool. I'll just place all my work over here in this pile with the Sega Saturn, zune, and the batman vs superman movie... you know the "it could have been glorious, but it turned out to be complete garbage" pile
-
Again I ended working for a company where people love to pride themselves because they're 'agile'.
Basically they bought A JIRA license, that's all.
The CTO decides the estimates privately.
He assign the stories.
No idea what's a retrospective.
The sprint ends whenever he wants.
No CI.
New stories continuosly added to the active sprint.
That's the risk of agile, unchecked power.3 -
Hey hens I'm back on my crack.
How have you all been? Tell me what I've missed (presumably not much as you've all been locked indoors for a while now but hey ho)
I'll be handed a paper soon that says I can write code so I have that going for me (that's also where I've been for the past while)15 -
I had no idea of how to implement the logic of a ticket. That's why I started with creating some unit tests that failed. Then I continued working until they all passed.
So it works now.
I have still no idea of how I implemented the logic.3 -
When you actually use your knowledge and experience to solve a problem outside work, that's a real nice feeling. Had to distribute a bunch of files, so just threw together a Vue page in 20 min. Fully interactive with filtering and all. Nice!2
-
"you got all that done in a day?"
that's what happens when you work *with* your framework instead of against it1 -
As promised, here is an update photo! Just bought some nicer BenQ displays and a quad VESA mount to hold it all. My RX 460 can barely keep up, so that's the next thing on the upgrade list.
Full resolution: https://ibb.co/jP2Pue6 -
So, the other night I ate too much and it somehow messed up with my nervous system... I spent about 3 or 4 hours being sleepless in bed.. Until I finally decided to ask the all-knowledgeable Google assistant for help. And that's what I got.2
-
Nobody understands me
Does it matter
Not at all
I have my laptop
And it understands what I am saying
That's enough for me ;)4 -
That's right guys. That's the mobile version of devRant with notifications running on Mac OS X. All through the power of Arc Welder for Chrome. Hopefully we'll get the API soon so that we can get this natively.6
-
What are you all planning on getting on Black Friday/Cyber Monday? I've pinched pennies all year and saved up just enough to only be able to afford 35% or so of the cost of being beaten in a local dark alley. That's not even what I wanted, but still.16
-
"If we need to deprioritize something that's fine, as long as it all still gets done by the time we agreed on."
Gotta love product management types.4 -
dad: yeah sure , that's why no laptop is working well in this house
all three laptops are older than 4 years and use 5400 rpm hdds and also are full of my parent's stuff. -
Me: I feel like JavaScript has buyer's remorse because all day you return, return, return things.
John: That's how you know it's functioning. -
What does PFA MOM stand for?
We're an international company, we all use English while working. That's all fine and good.
But there's one project manager that throws in really obscure acronyms that even I, a native English speaker, struggle with.
It's "please find attached minutes of meeting". Is it really that hard to type?15 -
Have you ever lost all the motivation for anything in life. Yes that's me right now. Can't even be bothered to right this post properly. Fuck everything and everyone.8
-
Coworker: I did not progress much but at least I managed to get rid of all compiler warnings.
Me: That's okay. What were they about?
Coworker: No idea.
Me: How did you get rid of them then??
Coworker: I removed the "Wall" option when I use gcc. -
That's it. A year just passed, and here i am sitting in my dorm, watching from my window all those fireworks blazing, exploding, dazzling the sky.
I got no one to party. No one accompanying me.
That's all. Happy new year all!5 -
I honestly do not understand why people speak so badly about PHP(that's the general vibe I am getting from all these different platforms) or maybe it's because I am still new at it I am yet to find out the reason.27

We all love that colleague that swears he didn't make the method that's making 2 different functionalities not work 5 hours before the deadline even when git blame clearly shows he was the one to make changes.
-
We all make Blue Prism the receving end of our jokes and that's actually very unfair, they even developed their own sorting algorithms, fuckYouSort, and that's something I want to acknowledge.2
-
All I'm saying is that if we want speech completely locked down on all social media platforms, simply hire the StackOverflow mods and the problem is solved. Nobody will be able to post anything unless the mods believe it's worthwhile for everyone to read and respond to.
That's it. That's the rant.4 -
Duplicate question
Too opinion based
Fuck you this is a dumb question
But if you actual got a question and give all the information that's needed nobody fucking responds
Yeah well fuck you StackOverflow
It's like they only want to bash people and not actually help1 -
As it turns out, of all the teams from my school that have been at the classic Catalysts Coding Contests on Nov 16th, the one I was in turned out to be the best. That's cool I guess.
-
Me: I'll get it to you tomorrow.
Supervisor: (*Sarcasm abounding*) That's fiiiiine, thank you sooo much for all of your haard work.
Fucker, you have no idea. Learn to code before making comments like that, goddamit.1 -
The Bluetooth API for Android is a fucking mess.
So is WiFi direct. Good luck doing anything with it.
That's all lol3 -
My biggest obstacle? Stupidity, laziness, willfull ignorance, procrastination.
Sometimes my teammates are the ones guilty of these things too. That, and impossible timetables, but that's par for the course for pretty much all of us.4 -
I wish I had programming friends in my life all I have are kids at middle school that dont know anything about programming and left alone to my mind about all the languages I know and I am left with home work that's like 9th grade math even though I'm in 8th annnd including science,English,And history PE don't mind but out of them all I wish I had programming friends yay 😒 looking forward towards 8th grade again 😒16

So, I'm 100% sure that in a year I'll look back at today and ask why I thought it was a good idea to implement a feature this way.
Looks good to me today, that's all I know. I'm done ✅ -
The only reason that's gonna push me to go to university is gonna be social life... being at CERN is great and all, but socially speaking it's a lacking environment :/ Especially for us youngsters6

That moment when you must pull an all-nighter, but realize that you're out of coffee. And Mate. And Redbull. Basically anything energetic. That's when you realize you're fucked. 😓5

Ok that's nice and all Google but how about you fix the fucking UI, laggy interfaces, janked and half baked tablet mode and just all round fix what you broke from chromeOS 70 onwards?
You know.. make sure things are stable before pretty?5 -
The networking closet I had the pleasure of working in most of last night. That's all very loud, very warm air compressors at the bottom, and the switch, firewall, and modem up near the top. And all they had was a small step stool...

What browsers do front end devs here normally test on? I test on Firefox and Chrome because...that's all I use, but what about Edge/Safari or god forbid IE11?
I'm more familiar with backend dev ops so my testing consisted of checking Firefox a lot. :P6 -
New macbook pro has no usb ports , that's apple way of saying "fuck all developers" . That is such a dick move , also the shitty butterfly keyboard i don't know if any developer will like it , any thoughts?7

So FedEx delivered a 20-30lb package to my doorstep... I had a lot of trouble just getting it inside, I imagined carrying it all the way...
Am I weak or are those guys superhuman? or maybe that's the downside of being too techy? We're soon all become weaklings?30 -
Can we get a "whiny edgy crybaby rambling" category?
Because that's where all your shit over github belongs.15 -
Notepad of all things just freezed on me and restarted, losing my notes progress three times before I realized what was happening.
Thanks Microsoft for giving me a reason to hate Win11
Turns out the moment the vertical scrollbar appears, it crashes. That's it, a fucking scrollbar.3 -
Fuck you NXP and your market-penetrating proprietary bullshit solutions where there's plenty of standards around.
That's all. Have a nice weekend. -
If you can't write code please get the fuck out of our way! Stop applying for our jobs! Take a nap on the nearest highway during rush hour. That's all.3

You know how some kid says "poo" like it's the best joke ever? That's exactly what your shitty "programmer" jokes are like, and we're all fucking tired of them (not to mention we've already heard them countless times).8

All software sucks, I overheard a colleague say. I used to be proud of what I wrote, but after 20 years I realize that I am never going to write perfect code. It may be good enough, but if that's all, than my colleague may be right. What a relief :)2
-
Do you all look for code complexity O(n) while coding? Or you make sure that your code runs and never look back what's happening ?
Because as per code review no one looks for code complexity and that's so sad11 -
Trying to understand other people's code like:
- 6 README, in total 7 lines (that's all there is for documentation)
- 40% of code is commentary like (original code, not altered...)
// if(a = b)
// c = d; // this is not working -
Didn't install linux for years now. Today, I have to and nothing changed about wifi drivers, at all ! Even the install process still sucks !
And they still ask to "sudo apt-get install fucking-wifi-driver" ?!?!?!
I don't have internet yet, that's the all point, damn it !22 -
so they are really out there...
people who beleive C# is just the one source of truth and all other languages are just garbage
🤡
sad to be so ignorant - though i guess ignorance is bliss
to be clear: I use C# like anyone else, but it's just a tool in the toolkit, that's all11 -
Cool. I've installed a time paradox! All that's left is to figure out how to leverage it to my benefit...3

Just spent 4 hours working on a somewhat complex restructuring of my current project that, when boiled down totals about 50 new or modified lines.
While I realize that line count != productivity, all the testing and reworking over that period has me feeling like there should be more to show for it.
But then, there's the fact that it's working properly as it's supposed to now, so I guess it's a win in the end.1 -
When non-Rails developers say RoR. just freaking say Rails or Ruby on Rails. I don't like the way RoR sounds, that's all.2

That's the kind of project I have to work on now which was developed for a year and has no documentation at all... 😰🖕🏻👿1

a first time project owner sets up weekly requirements meetings for a new project. everyone has input, but the project owner. 4 months into building the application to the requirements gathered, the project owner says, that's not at all what I want. 4 months wasted3

I fucking suck at SQL and that's hurting my performance as a supposed backend developer :D
All the cool nested queries and whatnot, it just flies over my head, I need to learn it better, any tips on study resources?6 -
Got new task assigned from my project manager. Client wants to build an Instagram automation site from scratch.
The best thing is UI specification states "Pretty nice and Easy".. that's all.3 -
So basically people in school were playing krunker.io, and shellshock.io in class. The school took notice and decided to "futureproof" their blockage. They basically blocked all io domains, because io domains are definitely all games. So yes, that's the story of how atom.io and every other io domain is blocked at my school4

I was at work today, coding and such. A girl walked in, so pretty and smart looking, beautiful eyes and all.. and asked if she can use my computer for a moment. That's it. C'mon what did you expect! We code!5

Yay Google + leaked info!!
New old news again :P
Come on people if you want something to be safe you DO NOT I repeat DO NOT send it to someone else's computer. That's it. Fuck firewalls fuck av fuck it all.1 -

Just found out that all the high school varsity sports kids that got full rides to ivy leagues for sports are all transferring or failing. Meanwhile, I've been accepted into a graduate program for Software Engineering and I'm going into my second internship this summer. I know to most people that's just more work and more school but to me that's winning -
Last hackaton (and first) I participated in was a disaster.
In the end our team was the only team, but there were other hackatons as well so in the end they just judged all the different hackatons as if they were all the same and that's the story of my team not winning 25k$ -
Master Javascript from A to Z.
Naah just kidding we all know that's impossible, I'll buy google instead.2 -
Compile before leaving for the night, everything's good. Compile when I come in and it's all fucked up. Over 50 files changed and hit overnight.
14 hours later, compile successful 100%
That's how a day should end. -

I love emacs dired mode.
Nothing better than the full power of a decent text editor to edit directory content.
I know quite some multi-file-naming tools, but they are all crap compared to dired.
That's all. Have a nice weekend, everyone!1 -
My colleague sucks in all programming languages known to mankind, and he's one the best programmer I know.
Stop thinking "programming = programming language", languages are nothing ! Programming is about logic, architecture, paradigms, and that's about it.
Programming languages are the front-end of programming.2 -
I'd tech Computer Science. You would think that we wouldn't need that anymore, but we would need it more than ever. We would never be safe with a superior intelligence! That's why we voted trump after all. ;)1
-
"Here customer, have the username, password, and URL of our developer's CI environment! You can test all of your features there. "
" Devs: Please don't make any changes to dev code that would cause the CI system to run."
That's not how this works. That's not how any of this works.2 -
Hello and welcome come to hell for developers. Take a seat at any open computer.
You may have noticed we did away with the fire and brimstone.
Instead we just have you maintain the legacy code from your first job.
It's genrally html, php, javascript, and css all on the same page and all mixed together.
We would say have fun, but that's not really the point. -
I wrote a message to the scrum master complaining how unfair is that QA added new acceptance criteria after I finished the story
he sends me back a GIF
and that's all -
MOUSER! If I select ‘In Stock’ in your filter I want to see, who would have guessed, only parts that are in stock! Why do you think I want to see all the stuff that's on order?4

Next time someone asks me to go get something that's heavy, I'll smile, go there and return with a pointer to that thing. After all, we have to practice these programming concepts in everyday life 🚶♂️🚶♂️

Yanno, when I pay $60 for a theme, I get what I get. That's fine. Invariably I end up having to mess with the css. That's fine too.
However, theme makers? Please don't mix hyphens and underscores in your selectors. Decide on a case style. Avoid div-itus.
And for the love of all a selector such as #Top_bar .logo #logo a.logo makes code a pain in the ass to test2 -
Most awesome game ever! It mostly plays by itself and cheats... or maybe it a bug: You (as Autoplay) don't have to beat all the NPCs to advance....
Strangely it feels sort of familiar... O right bc I usually God Mode all games..... But still need to play thru them manually.
Also there's some Chinese left in one of the buttons... they forgot to translate... But maybe that's... Most of time all we care about is the graphics and seeing rank go up....3 -
So I just spent all morning struggling setting up a project and getting it to run. My colleague sent me a screenshot of the documentation wiki, but didn't give the link.
*4 hours later looks at email for the Nth time*
Wait he did... that's not a wiki, that's Readme.md... this is in the repo link right above it!
I didn't need to checkout the repo so didn't open it... -
JavaScript is shit! The only JavaScript frameworks I've liked so far is Angular 2 onwards all the way upto 5, and that's only because it's in TypeScript. Fucking JavaScript! How did it even get here!? So anything with JS, please save us all the gut wrenching, testicle crushing, ass fucking without lube pain.... fuck JavaScript!1

I think that this is a rant place and we all complain a lot and shit but in the end of the day, we all love being Devs and after all, that's why we're here..3

Best thing about DevRant is: I have 2nd job that's not a developer company and all my colleges doesn't understand a jack shit about code and the culture. But worst of all is that everyone there is "shoulder spy's.... So i can feel safe when i surf DevRant during the breaks and enjoy my breaks with DevRant2

Most actual GraphQL explanation:
1. Still uses your xhr/fetch/axios on FE
2. Just sends all the requests to single endpoint
3. On BE uses its own resolution schema to call proper controller to handle the request, rather than relying on router for that
That's all!
Just another useless layer of abstraction with its learning curve, tricks and bugs as ORMs are9 -
"Oh, you committed at a top level? That's alright I'm going to make you revert at file level, all 10 files in 4 directories. Oh and I may just keep one or two with your changes just for old times sake."

I'm intrigued, what are you all trying to learn in your spare time and how?
I'll go first, brushing up on maths by reading K A Stroud advanced engineering mathematics.
He's got an intro level book that's also very good.5 -
I'm struggling to create a simple email footer using tables and I'm so fucking pissed for it. That's all folks.4

There's this one kid in my web design lab (I go to a technical highschool) and he always brags about using bootstrap and that's all he does is copy from the bootstrap library pisses me off!

I need to create a couple of websites real quick, mostly brochure style...
I don't normally do this, but, in this case, I have to.
I'm a programmer though, not a designer
What would you recommend for someone like me, that's fast, but reilable
All I can think of, is wordpress but that's a dirty word around here (for seeminglyg ood reason)
anything else?10 -

How did you all get into development? I've heard some pretty non-linear career trajectories from friends of mine, but I'm not sure if that's normative for developers as a whole. Your thoughts?13 -
ah, APIs... writing APIs is fine, even typing an API can be great! 😃👍🏻
that's it

No, actually, all of the above is invalid if you've gotta do it in typescript9 -
Yesterday, I was expecting my merge request to be closed.
I've done all the stuff my tech lead told me to do.
All tests passes, green light boyzzzzz.
Gitlab CI pipeline passes, greeeeeen light I said.
In Jenkins everything f*cked up...
Why ??
Well it was a conflict with 3 other MRs, missing rebase from other dudes.
And because they were remote working, got to clean up all this mess.
That's was a day off.
PS : well that's was not so off, I could fix a UB on a ternary and extend a test which was not covering some cases.
PS2 : learn git damn3 -

How many hours does it take to get your configfiles right?
First .zshrc, then .vimrc, tmux, weechat, wpa_supplicant, grub... so much config.
But that's sort of the fun of it all3 -
There's a special place in hell for the people responsible for PC screen menus. I'm sure they all just hate other people, this shit can only be intentional.
Are expensive screens better in that regard or do they all have this UX clusterfuck that's processed by a microchip Foxconn grabbed from their garbage can?10 -
Hate getting a project that's 4 hours to slice 3 full page PSD interfaces, have all assets created, and have the site live and fully functional. Wtf?

First games console ever tried: NES. Around 1986.
First computer:
Sinclair Spectrum +2 !! Around 1988. I used to buy those books that came with code. I wrote all that code in but hardly ever played the actual game.
Once met the guy who created lots of game faves at the time (manic miner, chucky egg etc). That's where it all started...4 -
Everytime I wake up,
I question whether if I'm stuck in time or not. All my life I've wanted to go out and explore, not be isolated in this tiny place called home that I knew far too well.
I wanted to be in a place with a different timezone, a place with languages that I don't know. That's where I want to go.
I feel as if everyday remains the same and I'm slowly going insane. I want to run, too see, to feel a different kind of breeze.
Yet there's so many limitations and hindrance; Money, that's all I need, money that I don't have. It's so sad that something that's claimed to be insignificant for happiness could limit you from so many things.
The things that will make you happy, the things that will make you learn.
All because of one stupid limitation and all your dreams, crash
and burn.6 -
Why is React.js so hard to learn for someone from a JAVA back end background? I'm constantly asking myself "so should I set param as string? or int? Array? so many methods that's returning html tags! what collects all and makes it appear at WHERE??"9

An undefined ArrayList coupled with NullPointerExceptions because of it really know how to raise your blood pressure up.
Spent almost 1 hour trying to figure out why and all I needed to do was look a couple lines above.
But I guess that's what 4am development is all about -
Yes I know that's too many points this sprint.
I understand you have to have all the things.
No I can't move the stories out bc you gave us a hard deadline for the release. -
My team builds robots and we're trying to use an IMU for orientation. Asked one of the members to find our spare one because the one in the robot was apparently throwing errors.
Him: "Oh hey I couldn't find it"
Me: "did you look in all the boxes?"
Him: "ya dude I looked in all our boxes, even the box we never use"
Me: "shoot ok I guess we lost one, I'll order another one soon"
*1 day passes*
Me: goes to our main box to get a keyboard out
Me: opens the box, IMU is sitting right on top
Me: pulls out the keyboard, sees ANOTHER IMU sitting in the box
Me: "hey coworker, you said you looked in all the boxes, right?"
Him: "yeah dude no clue where it is."
Me: "it's sitting right on top. Plus there's another one in here"
Him: "oh lol that's weird"
That's all you have to say for yourself? That's weird?! DUDE NOT ONLY WAS IT SITTING RIGHT ON TOP OF THE BOX, THERE WE'RE *2* OF THEM IN THERE, IN THE MAIN BOX WE USE
the sad part is that's not even the worst part of the story... That part to follow soon ;)1 -
"When I try make a change, system XYZ is not happy do you know why?"
Really? That's all you're giving me to go on? -
When shall ye use a framework or when ye shall code all it self?
That's a question I shall ask all ty devRanters for ye who has the knowledge of programming would be kind to share to all others.3 -

"Oh I fixed that issue yesterday. That's a small win".
Cringe all around.15 -
Now that's an election done right...
Stupid US political system/media where all the attention goes to Republicans and Democrats candidates and both are the same shit...
Yes I know not dev related but just had to rant....11 -

I'm so used to watching all websites with the dev tools open, that when I finally close it, they all look skewed to the right and not centeret.
Oh well, that's just a part of the game I guess -

Me in the beginning thinking programming is all fun and games. I think that's what holds a lot a new programmers back. This can lead to over thinking and even procrastination.5

I get the feeling, there are 2 devs in the Golang team, that were like
"Every idiot knows that Acronyms should be all caps."
"Da fuck?! Wanna know what should be all caps?!
The sign on your mom's brothel, dickhead!"
And so they both tried to establish their style as a convention in the stdlib, and that's why half the the Acronyms are written in all-caps and the other half isn't.1 -
0. *gets on podium* All people being able to work together without yelling at somebody. For just a day if that's too hard.
*hops off*
1. A job in computer science without having to study all of physics and chem till 12th grade, It's a requirement here that you need to study all three sciences if you want to pursue just one, and I wish I could escape from it, it's stressful.
2. Not Dev related, but hugs.4 -

data Word: A Word is an unsigned integral type, with the same size as Int.
And here I was thinking a word is a string! And that's not all, there is also Word8, Word16 and whatever else.3 -
Fuck the AP comp sci test all they give me is a number (1-5) and that's fucking it, how the fuck and I supposed to know what I did wrong.1

Sadly that's all I've implemented so far and I don't have a lot of time for these things :-/
But damn puppeteer is cool!
shit I mixed up kissmanga and kissanime... -
[Rust] What are alternatives to argument drilling for something like a string interner which is technically a memory leak so it really shouldn't be global but at the same time all but a couple top level functions depend on its existence? I'm aware of context objects and that's all ChatGPT could give me as well, but I'm wondering if there's more to this problem than that.1
-
ok that's it, I hate Gmail security. If I don't have access to my phone I can't get on my account in order to recover my phone, fuck.
I have tried to disable all of the security but it's impossible3 -
We are probably going to see even more kotlin. That's something, right? The dev future can't be all bleak ^^1

Is there something like tinder that doesn't require a photo?
I just don't like my own face right now. That's all.28 -
People who use word-break: break-all on body paragraph content need to stand in a narrow, claustrophobia-inducing room, cut off their left hand, and hold it up against the right-hand wall, while holding the stump of their left arm against the left wall. That's what it feels like to read break-all in longform content.

Anybody here know the "Nyet! Rifle is fine!" meme?
Yeah that's how I feel about all the JS framerks and bloat and all that instead of Vanilla JS.3 -
When I spent a year not using a language, then when trying to solve a task in the said language I realised I had forgotten all the syntax...until I realised that's perfectly normal and I'm just a negative nancy.1

Well. That's me in a pissy mood all day. Guess what's coming ...

I have a Angular webapp that's minified in production. And it's throwing an error thought it seems to get caught by a catch-all and relayed to a toast message.
Is there anyway to trace it back to the source code?11 -
Ever spend 4 years compiling a library of awesome code while all the time forgetting you set up version control for it, and then one day you accidentally hit the magical undo button that annihilates all of your code in one fell swoop?
Yeah... Me either. That's totally not the reason 70% of my classes now look like they were decompiled from yesterdays build -_- -
I can't stand typescript lovers
it's just typing on top of javascript... it's good but that's all - one more tool to help you build solutions
why you keep talking everyday about types, why you keep creating types for everything in the most unusuble and unmaintainable ways??7 -
To me, programming, designing systems, reviewing work, it's all easy.
Perhaps that's because of the challenge I've set myself. To find a like minded that I can get to know -
When I see programmers with great physique, I'm like...
Yeah, that's not real though, it's all fake abs!1 -
I guess today I'm ranting about x64. I don't have any screaming into the void stuff but I am unhappy that some instructions can't have 64bit immediate
Really annoying.

I need to actually build up my website since all that's there is a digital resume currently
I have too many ideas for what I want like a simple blogging space, project showcase space, my teacher recommend a lanking page, and a better digital resume. but limited free time to figure out where to start and what to use and that's really demotivating
I'm thinking about using node or vue to learn a framework but again I'd have to learn them since all I know is normal unmodified js. And again where the hell do I start4 -
So I might play a game and get all the characters today so I can beat everyone that's comes against me. I'm the best player in the world watch your back.2

What API have you used that's had the most sensibly formatted responses?

I deleted all the logs and anything I thought was taking up space the server will go from 93GB space ussd out of 120Gb. To 119GB used in least than 10 minutes... am tired I fell like just turn it off physically in the server room and going to sleep .. f%$$%k this . I have cleared logs like 10 times now4

Nobody is here, right? So, I can complain without sounding mean...
Vue Mastery and Vue School are both absolute nightmare education offerings.
That's all. Mindbogglingly invaluable.
Maybe it's the churn... but also - you could rerecord those videos in a week or two and have them updated... easy...4 -
Well today I had to update my windows.. What a coincident that this update messed my partition table and cleaned up partition with linux
That's how you kill competition XD. At least i had all files in cloud
PS W removed L so I removed him -
Just installed Semantic UI for the first time.

I'll now need to re-install it. I'm not -rf 'ing that shit.
Okay yeah I could just -rf it, but I'd break it.2 -
This place has fucking ducks everywhere. Duck is the new Cat here.
Why? What the fuck! If we want cuteness we should have images of http://rethinkrobotics.com/intera/ here. This cuteness will take over the world one day.
Probably, that's why! We'd all be sitting ducks. That's what this duck trend is signifying. Ah! I might see it now.
But, still! Fuck you duck 🦆!2 -
