Had my first 'mentor' moment at work today!
Newest guy couldn't figure something out and asked me, slightly nervously, for help.
Suddenly I went into mentorish state, explaining stuff I was doing while fixing it in under a minute!

Was running tests on a big project I'm doing which still contains a fair amount of bugs but I was sure that all thresholds would succeed and the test wouldn't fire an alert.
Ran the test: alert received any fucking way.

Out of necessity (or rather: lack of support) I've been neglecting my test suite for the past ~month. Now that one of the beta versions of RSpec has better Rails 6 support, I can finally get back to writing tests. Yay!
I just merged staging into my testing branch, and it's now 344 commits ahead of origin! eep.
So, I've got lots of tests to write. yay.3 -

Things that I will do during the next few weeks at work because I am an asshole:
Write an entire CLI utility in Rust for internal processes, no one on my city understands or even knows that Rust exists.
Write a small desktop app as proof of concept for another department that had made the idea some time ago in either: GnuSTEP Obj-C or Lazarus Pascal for the same reason as the Rust application.
Job security people. And I have a tendency to write things in stuff that no one else uses.8 -
Not gonna lie. Graduate program has gotten me 100% absolutely miserable. I dunno if it is the institution or what. But shit man. I really don't wanna do it anymore as much as when i started with this institution. Might look into other options, but first class is definitely a pain in the dick. The ammount of hw is too much, the concepts are hard, but my biggest pain: the professor and the teaching assistants. Their accents are out of this world and they just can't speak proper English.
Might go to more....err....caucasian places.7 -

The amount of effort being made to make php a saner development platform is outstanding really, specially with the release of php8, really good features in there. As someone that started with version 4(*shivers*), and stuck with it all the way to the glory of 7, 8 is a welcomed addition.
One in particular that I really like is the fact that we now (fucking finally) have union types as well as fucking match expressions! Which granted, these are single lines, but in place of it one could argue for a function.
I am pretty excited for some of the other items, but have not had the time to play with anything yet really. Wonder how much more is in store.7 -

I'm doing a code review on a huge feature, basically touching every part of our authorization logic, and man... It's like my colleague writes his code to be as hard to read as possible. He's 60+ and you'd think he'd have learned how to write good and clear code, but nope. "Let's make it cool cool and I look like I'm a genius. And if I can spend 3 keystrokes less on a function I'm happy". Fuck me.

I have found that when companies say or think that they do not have large amounts of data for using even the smallest bit of data acience analysis in terms of generating a model that can assist them that they do have data. No matter the size of the organization, the data is there.
