The Original email came from a random jumble of letters with a subject line of 'important dropbox program' - not only does it look dodgy but its english is horrible! It said;

We have sent emails explaining how to hover over links and to not to click them if it looks wrong.
No one does it.
We hired a company to send fake phishing emails to train users in what to do.
It made no difference!
We now make people 'verify' their email addresses when opening any sort of link to try get them to actually look at what they're opening.
We also strip emails of original attachments and create 'safe' html copies as we can't trust them to look at what they're opening.
Everyone complains about it but Jesus Christ, this is why!!!

Why is the ternary operator such a hated thing? I constantly hear people saying it's less readable, confusing, etc.
I think it's a beautiful, useful, and important operator and I use it constantly wherever readability won't be much affected.
How can you justify a repetitive if/else structure over a ternary, given that you're sure you're not going to put anything else in the ifs?
Whatever happened to DRY?
Whatever happened to KISS?
If those guidelines are what you code by, what's the excuse not to use it?

The idea was simple. Create a div.
Add two 50% div's inside. Float them. Add clearfix to parent.
Everything was fine.
Noticed that one of the childs had a height bigger than the other. But due to an adaptive design, setting static heights did not work.
Simple fix. Add a height to parent div and set overflow-y to hidden.
It didn't work.
Tried using the legendary !Important (a.k.a. not important but important.) Didn't work. Set position to relative, set static height. Set the childs to absolute position with height 100%. Problem solved.
No. It. Didn't. Fucking. Work.
Tried every possible css combination could could fucking think off.
After 15 minutes (8 hours in dev-stress mode) realized the clearfix changed the div DISPLAY TO FUCKING TABLE. A TABLE. FUCKING TABLES CANT HAVE FUCKING HEIGHTS FUCK.
Anyway. 6 years after my first clearfix. I learnt something new about the code that saves my life every project.5 -

Just because you can learn HTML in a day doesn’t mean that you don’t need a degree.
Did you know that your browser, HTML, CSS, Javascript, and even your operating system use linked lists, binary trees, hash tables, and other so-called “useless” data structures?
It’s important to understand the roots and fundamentals of computer science even if you won’t use that knowledge day to day.
It changes your perspective on programming once you learn what actually goes on under the hood, and makes you think twice about the impact of what you write.
It’s relatively easy to get a programming job without a degree nowadays, but it often leads to web developers claiming that degrees aren’t important to their web apps.
There is much more than just the web to computer science, and that’s something to always keep in mind.10 -

I was just trying to point out that when you mock up any UI, you should take into account the fact that information is hierarchical: more important stuff before less important stuff, you know. Maybe you don't want to swamp the user with buttons all the time. When everything is important, nothing is. But that's just detail. And then the boss says we should create two more incongruent screens and all of the sudden that's a brilliant idea! So then again, sorry. I know exactly where my place is now. You pretend you know what you're doing and I fix it for you.1

I found university very worthwhile, mainly for what it exposed me to that I wouldn’t have necessarily learned otherwise. University exposed me to a lot of knowledge which allowed me to discover the fields and concepts that really interested me. It also forced me to learn math, and I’ve come to really love mathematics, even though my knowledge is still not that deep. I really respect and appreciate math now that I have more than a superficial understanding of it.
CS-wise, the things that have been most useful in practice have been complexity, data structures, concurrency, and others, but complexity is probably the absolute most important thing to at least learn the basics of.
I would not say that university is a necessity though. You can absolutely get by teaching yourself, especially if you are disciplined/interested enough to keep doing it. The important thing is to learn *what* to learn.2 -
Client have this amazing idea about a website that they wanted to convert into reality by using our service. Me and my friend started working on it.
After a month later when it's almost ready, they informed they are not investing into the idea anymore. They would like to discard the project and will pay half of it.
I am eventually realising why signing a contract is really important4 -
So... Manager pulls us in. Meeting in 10 minutes guys. I know it's unplanned, but it's important.
Not only is it the 10th time he's interrupted my workflow, but it's almost time to go home. And I was getting some important shit done.
Anyways, come the meeting: we are going to abandon all the work we've done on our microservice platform (2yrs+ in the making) and make it a monolith. Oh, and we have to do it in 4 weeks, because a client is asking for it. Oh, and you'll probably have to do overtime.

Time management tips one must follow to be successful:-
1. Remove distractions:- Phone, Whatsapp, Instagram, FB, etc. All away from you during work.
2. Remove clutters: Get rid of not required things.
3. Eliminate redundancy
4. Emulate others: (My favourite) If someone has spend time and done some work. Do not reinvent the same work done just replicate that work and continue from that point.
5. Share burden: Team work and depending on others is not bad.
6. Make work fun: Most important if you enjoy your work you will give your best.5 -

Yesterday we went to a customer to talk to the accountants because we want to remove one of their unused PC's in the office.
First, just the way they think (and talk if) they are the most important and it's absolutely critical everything works 100%. I see they are important but not 100 times more important than everybody else!
They called us their EDP-guys (EDV in German, that's the translation I found). That insulted me a bit. I'm rather called IT-guy, I don't know anything about the fucking EDP systems nor want I to. I'm there to make sure the hardware works. But whatever, fine, call me what you want.
Then they straight up threatened us, because their work is so important, they can't afford to have downtime in their systems. They don't really care, but the bosses of us both do and if we fuck up they (the bosses) will hold us responsible. There is a fucking update for your piece of shit software (datev)! I don't do the update, I'm just responsible that the update can be deployed on the hardware. I'm not responsible if this update fucks your system and frankly I don't care!
I could tell them all of this but they won't listen. They always talk in this patronising arrogant voice, because they are so important and we better don't fuck up the update.
I'm there to help. I don't want downtime for your systems. I want you to work with our systems the best you can.
But fuck you, I hope the server burns down!13 -
For fucks sake can people stop using phones while walking, especially in busy places it's getting fucking ridiculous not to mention dangerous, the number of people I've seen that have headphones on and are glued to their screens almost bumping into people. What can they possibly be doing that's so important that they cant leave their phone in their pocket for 15 minutes while they get to where they need to be.6

Why is source code so crappy? May career is not the longest, buy in my 8 years I talked to so many developers and every one told me how important quality, standards, tests and architecture are - but every codebase I've seen is lacking all of it. Everything is running on constant live support.
I don't get it. It is like I live in a world where everyone does know what has to be done, but no-one does it. I suspect it is because people are lazy, lying and won't say no but that's also not a world I want to live in.24 -

I had to find a MailChimp sync plugin for a webshop and thought I found a good one that synced one way (webshop to MailChimp).
I figured, meh, what could go wrong? So I installed it, ran it...and somehow lost around 4000 mailinglist receipients because they were not in the webshop.
Turns out it adds the registered users in the webshop, but also removes entries that are not! Needless to say, I had some explaining to do and was only able to recover about 3000 addresses from a previously sent campaign.
Customer was not happy, neither was my boss, very important lesson learned...1 -
Meeting of 10 minutes to review and grade a project that took months to make. Apparently your supervisor giving you proper attention is not important enough, compared to him getting his food delivery.

That the most important thing in any project is to first make sure YOU have understood what the customer/management wants and that THEY have understood what you are going to do.
Seen so many projects (other people's and my own) go down the drain because people had false expectations.
Also, good management is enormously important for any medium-sized endeavour. I cannot count how often I have seen mediocre to bad middle management screw things up, and devs pull off overnighters and 60+hours work weeks for this super-important project that then goes to the bin because "it turned out to be not so important in the end, sorry."1 -

Most web developers have to use CSS every now and then. I don't really mind using CSS every know and then, but one thing really bugs me. As a developer, I read ! as "not". In CSS !important becomes "not" important. However, when I read CSS I still read "not" important, when I know this really worked the other way around.
BTW, when I first came across !important many years ago, I really thought it meant a rule was not important, really confusing!2 -
You have a meeting with a really really important client who is a typical client from hell who constantly changes his mind about everything and then blames you for “not getting things done” and always says “this is not what I asked for” every god damn time.
Anyway, he now jokingly asks you if you think he has been a troublesome client and before you have time to answer he continues the meeting.
What do you do? Do you suck it up like a weakling and disappear up your own asshole or do you tell him what a monster he is?

Client delivers front end mockups, can do nothing. Not one single element on it is compliant - have to send it back for revisions.

I remember the first time I had a code block, I sat on my desk for up to 18 hours trying to fix it. In the end realizing that my impatience is not helping me. It was all in vain. A tired mind did not help.
I finally came to realise that I was lacking on knowledge and a tired brain did not help. I did it the next day but learnt a huge lesson. When it's just not your day, it's not you day. A fresh mind will help next day. Relax, do anything apart from code.
Too much of code can drain you of ideas and smartness. You need to let your mind breathe. Life away from the PC is important too. -

A while back we had some time sensitive work I was doing in overtime, the work was purely functional and the front end had not yet been done. It went to QA to test the functionality and the only feedback I got was UX oriented.
I tried to explain on 3 occasions that the looks was not important in the slightest at this stage, and just try to break it. I then got a lecture that it wasn't an optimised layout and was shown the AA route finder as an example of how the tester thought it should look.1 -

After I complete it, I ask them to complete UAT to make sure it is what they wanted so we can go live. They seem to not have enough time to test it. After one month the whole dept gets divested! TLDR boss is an idiot.
Boss has an issue. Sends screenshot, and a one sentence explanation, boss-style (not really clear, but the screenshot helps).
I set to solve it, not a minute passes, the boss os calling.
Explains the issue, i tell him I'm working on it, will msg when done. He explains the problem again, and tells me to hurry. I tell him, sure, let's hang up, give me five minutes, so he starts explaining again, that it's IMPORTANT.
Finally hangs up, it didn't take more than 3 minutes to solve it, msg him, it's done. test it, screenshots for the two parts i solved (of the one he wanted corrected and one where a similar case is still as it's supposed to be, not altered).
He calls me, I start telling him this us what I did, the screenshot.... *Interrups*
This is not what he needed, it's important, IMPORTANT i say, and tells the problem again.
I'm pretty annoyed by now, and just calm fuckoff mood comes over. I practically told him to click the link and see for himself....

Communication is IMPORTANT, and the way to approach someone is also IMPORTANT.
I experienced that my colleague is from China, and his English accent is so strong (in the context of not understandable, like the word 'folder' he pronounces it 'foda', and the word 'code' he pronounces it 'korr') that I have to ask him to repeat himself (which sometimes I felt guilty to ask him to repeat for thrice, and I am still not able to understand) or maybe we can do it over text. It is much easier to understand him that way and I can leverage these texts to see a bigger picture of the message.
From this, I realised I need to work more on understanding what he is going to say and what he actually meant.

I got some C++ material and example code for doing some rendering, and the material says "these parts are not important".

The language is important but not everything. It's what you do with it that matters. Just because you know python, doesn't mean that you can do machine learning. Even simply asking what do I do is better than that!

I work in a big corporate world where I felt really out of place at first. I didn’t enjoy working there, I could not understand why people would work so hard to keep all the systems happy. No one thanked them, no one gave the smart people maintaining the important systems any credits. I did not understand. Why did they care so much for these systems?
My team split. We were too many with too many systems to care for. After this my team was a lot smaller and therefore I ended up in a more important role. I was forced to do these tasks the more senior engineers had done before me, in the previous team. This was the greatest thing that could happen to me, and I started to like coming into work. Now our team is big again but I’m one of the senior people in it. Not senior as in years active in the industry but senior as in knows the most about our systems and our work environment. I work hard to constantly share my knowledge and try to put the newer members in situations where they also have to take responsibility.
Don’t be afraid to put important tasks on junior or new people. They might fuck up but they will learn, as will you. Don’t hog your knowledge and your team will thank you.1 -

An overengineered solution can usually be simplified without breaking anything important. An oversimplified solution can rarely be upgraded without major breaking changes.
Not everything needs to follow the "best practices" - if it's not a part of the core functionality, diminishing returns often kick in quite fast.2 -

F*ck Apple. WatchOs 4 is a downgrade! On first apple watch the system runs half the speed. The music app is now shit, because I can only play music downloaded on the 2gb apple watch. Seriously wtf? Maybe I have more music than 2gb. There new design of the app slowed the app down to 15 fps...
The story watch face is complete crap it shows all the time only "Good morning, name".
The worst is I can't go back to the watchOS 3 which was so many times better...
And you still have this bug that pisses me off since watch OS 1 you can hear every sounds coming from your watch with your Bluetooth headphones, but not calls.

I just realized that in my company , the code review is not important.... And the source code is fucked up.... The structure is like functional programming and Oop combine with redundant function everywhere.
And in the source code there's a folder called depreciating service , I asked them what is that , they told me it is the service previously but not recommended for using it.
I was like "you mean deprecated"? Omg

Oh my god, when will Firefox shut up about its motherfucking colours!? Themes have been a feature since forever, none of this is new. Also, I DO NOT want my fucking userchrome to be colourful, and I DO NOT want to be constantly bugged about this. It's a fucking browser. when I download it from github it crashes based on an INTERNAL py file not being present that literally was not included in the crap appimage distribution !

How can Javascript, one of the MOST WIDELY used and MATURE languages with A MILLION CANCEROUS FRAMEWORKS, NOT have a basic collections class? Are data structures not important in Javascript?
I've been struggling all night trying to get Sets working - surprise, they're utterly useless in Javascript cause you can't define the set comparator.
I just lost it when I found out THERE ISN'T EVEN A QUEUE. WT-ACTUAL-F15 -
I've been reticent to chime in on this weeks group rant, feels too personal...but it is what is is.
Most emotional was losing a dev to cancer, and an analyst to an allergy, and an engineer to an accident...ugh.
Most intense was probably losing servers and hard drives without recovery, not being able to get databases back online because they went down so bad, websites being down, not meeting some quarterly goal, shit not building, email campaigns that go sideways...fuck...anything involving reactionary leadership...unrealistic expectations.
But all that shit, while seemingly important or "stressful", pales in comparison to someone you fought with in the trenches not being there anymore.

It's sort of two separate projects although they are very tightly related.
The first is a pattern combination library and parsing engine. It takes a superficially similar approach to Regex or parser combinators, but with some important underlying differences.
The second is a specialized (not turing complete) language for rapidly defining full language grammars and parsers/lexers for those languages. -

My worst mistake was to not follow the commit process one time. I was multitasking a lot and forgot to run the tests for one of the commits I made. Next thing I know the whole Dev team started complaining that the Head of the branch was all messed up and blaming me. Long story short, it wasn't my change but I had to take the bullet and revert it for not following the process. It was deserved. Process is just as important as writing the code.

I understand that front end frameworks are important when scaling an app/project but it’s not a necessity for small student projects.
Can someone make me understand how a student can make use of the frontend frameworks not just for the sake of learning it but the framework actually being a necessity4 -

React Native testing is hair pulling.
Every test needs to have 100 different mocks in place and there are: 3 different methods to mock a function (mock, mockImplementation, and fn), 3 different types of query methods to get elements (get, find, and query), and 5 different selectors to query on (accessibility label, testId, accessibility hint, accessibility value, etc.)
And after reading all this, being diligent and learning the difference between stupid, synonymously-named functions which have wildly different side effects like "getByA11yHint" and "findByA11yHint" (ugh...), after all that, you write out a test with all the appropriate mocks and you want to do something simple and it beats you up all over again.
Button enabled or button disabled. Simple right? Logically the former is "expect(elem).toBeEnabled()" and the latter is "expect(elem).not.toBeEnabled()", right?
Wrong! You're an imbecile. Your tests will fail and never tell you that ".not.toBeEnabled()" and ".toBeDisabled()" don't do the same thing even though they look and sound exactly the same. Only the latter will work. The former makes all your tests fail. Where is this written in the docs? Nowhere?! Great!

So macOS Sierra introduced the ability to sync sort-of important folders like 'Desktop' and 'Documents' between machines.
Nice idea until I forgot that the default of a lot of programs is to set up your project in the Documents folder, and that the project I was checking out from git had two 20G files. Okay, the machine I was working with at home had plenty of disk space.
Turns out my machine at work did not, and happily synced itself out of disk space, which has been causing all sorts of no-not-fun-at-all busy work this morning.1 -

I’m neither messy or anal coder, but whenever I push something to production I make sure to handle all debugger warnings... I don’t think it’s perfectionism, rather good practice, makes important bugs easier to find. ;)
A single Facebook SDK Framework has 70+ unhandled warnings, trivial things, could be fixed in a half day...
I had to use ‘inhibit_all_warnings!’ flag literally for the first time, not to get frustrated every time it gets updated :/
P.S Not to mention I had to change the dependency manager because (with the newest update) they have written themselves out of compatibility with the one I was using... C’mon guys. Not cool. -

That I'm responsible enough for people to just entrust shit to me and irresponsible enough to fuck up very important things for very stupid and easily avoidable reasons. Rarely enough to not happen a lot, but serious enough fuck-ups that it can't be considered inconsequential.

Nobody has any use from a 80% finished project (so not finished at all) except it was a lot of time and money to get to that point. Oh boy I need to make progress on about 500 different projects to get them to a useful stage.
Also very important lesson: Dont have your anxiety take over when facing the "omg I have a 6 digit number of things on my 2do list" because you can't say no to the "awesome" ideas you have.
Also: I have made a rule for myself that prevents me from starting/working on a side project when I have important deadlines on main projects2 -

reading the project's code, following "save" callback in jvascript, i find this comment "IMPORTANT : this is a workaround to solve memory leak" and below it code that basically removes all elements from th DOM and adds them again.
so basically, someone could not find a cause to a memory leak and decided "solve it" in a specific place by reloading almost an entire page -

I'm looking to get a laptop, and I want your opinion on which one to get, because I'm a dev and don't care about whatever most reviews are looking at. Here is what I want from it:
1. I'll be running linux on it
2. I need it to be powerful enough to go through heavy development
3. It has to be decent sized 15" and below
4. It needs to stay cool under light load, under heavy load I've got a good cooling pad
5. Battery is not that important, and discrete graphics are not that important
I will be hooking it up to a keyboard/mouse/monitor setup when at home or work
Any suggestions? I've been looking at lenovo thinkpads for their ruggedness and dependability and Dell laptops as they've been around for a long time. Ultrabooks (like the XPS) are appealing but I don't know how well they deal with heat and thermal throttling under heavy load? -

It makes sense, but after a while, more and more important stuff starts piling up in the outer folder (not version-controlled). -

I am starting to teach competitive programming in my college. And now I am tired of people asking me if they should bring their laptop or not. I mean seriously. I wrote pdfs on tutorial and notes for them and they are like laptops are heavy.
And I am getting irritating at questions like first class if we will be doing something important in first class or not.
How can I say if it will be important or not. It depends on how good you already are in competitive programming and CS concepts.
I upload every pdf for class on githubs and shared it. Why don't you just check it for yourself.

1. Check every social media ultra often and the first thing in the morning. I was late or sometimes completely missed something because I did not check my social media. Today I missed school because study leve was kinda cancelled. But guess what did not check my social media for the announcement and checked it in rhe afternoon when school was long over. It's official that I'm following Chemical Engineering, specifically Food Engineering major (or whatever the heck it's called). I still code but I'm not sure if I'm gonna get to the level of the properly-trained folks. Heck I don't even know DFS and BFS and they seem important.

When you interview, remember that the single biggest factor in getting an offer is whether the interviewer likes you or not. I could tell lots of stories to back that up but it would take forever. So my TL;DR version would be: it isn't the only thing that matters, but trust me - it's crucially important.

People love to talk crap about MongoDB but it's not horrible for getting in to NoSql databases. Is it good for extremely important production apps? No, but nobody is saying it is.

Experience, intuition and 50-200% risk premium.
For me it is important to not put too much effort in it, as the developer estimation is usually mangled through sales and management anyway and doesn't have much to do with the final price.
And as nobody really bases internal budget and schedule on it as well, it's kind of pointless in most cases. -

Windows is crap! Linux is better but does not support many important programs. And I think, a good system should be usable just fine without using the Terminal.
