I got my wife pregnant despite birth control being used... You could say she *puts on sunglasses* failed the penetration test.
I'll see myself out.14 -
So I have a crush on a co-worker, she is also a dev. She is very cute despite her simplicity. I really wanted to talk to her, but I can't start a normal conversation with her. My mind just goes haywire.
BUT, just in case she is also on devRant:
If you happen to be reading this, I am the guy seated opposite the other table, we are facing each other. I liked you ever since the company outing. You are very cool and I want to spend more time with you.
:)44 -
5 reasons I love devRant
1. I can't understand the point of Facebook. And it has such a shitty UI, but devRant has a beautiful despite it is complete JS
2. It doesnt have 140 char limit.
3. It is 99% english.
4. Trolls and script kiddies are rare here.
5. It is fairly lightweight.
======================
1 reason I hate devRant
1. Total waste of time.16 -
I'd like to take a moment to thank YouTube for supporting the internet on Article 13, despite them having the best chance of implementing it on top of ContentID.
Thank you Google, and thank you YouTube for doing the right thing ♥️

Parents who, despite clearly seeing a code on my monitor think that I'm playing games, and need to nag me to study cause they "rarely see me with the textbook".
I'm in an IT university and explaining that everything's in PDF or just online doesn't help9 -

Coworker: "can you help me with this thing?"
Me: "sure, what have you tried so far"
Them: "nothing yet"
Hdhajsgrbeiry JUST TRY _SOMETHING_ AT LEAST BEFORE ASKING FOR HELP.
It's literally your job to solve problems, not get other people to solve them for you.
Asking for help if you don't understand something is one thing, but constantly trying to get people to show you exact examples is not doing your job.
This has been a chronic problem with one of our devs and despite advising them multiple times on it, it continues to happen.12 -
tl;dr Either I'm being incredibly touchy, or half of everyone I've interacted with is being a total jerk to me today.
I also feel like I'd be overreacting if I responded in a bitchy way, so =/ I must be nice despite everyone's behavior.
I don't want to people today.
I want to sleep.10 -
I think my most favorite part of programming is when I just try something out and it actually works despite really just guessing.4

I installed a firmware update on my router, and discovered it both adds telemetry and breaks the navigation in firefox. 🤦♀️
It also started complaining that my password isn't secure (despite its length) because it doesn't contain a symbol.
Good freaking job.10 -
Four meetings today.
Legal was not involved in legal agreement changes until I refused to make them without Legal signing off. Legal changed several things, leading to:
Project scope changed size from large to minuscule to small to medium.
Details changed at every step.
Despite being incredibly structured and process-heavy, people at this company are so disorganized. 😕rant "legal should be ok with it" "it's just a few words" another meeting another change sigh disorganization4 -
I am working on a project with a retard.
I am supposed to focus on the mobile apps but the backend guy doesn't know shit about REST.I spend more time teaching him how to serialize data into JSON and telling him not to store passwords as plaintext(He's now using md5 despite me telling him to use bcrypt) than developing the mobile apps am supposed to.
Guess who will be blamed for missing the deadline?
Yea, it's me.
Guess who will get the credits for the backend i am developing?
Yea, it's him.
Fuck!12 -
I really like my little group for this one huge exam project we have. Everyone's nice, ambitious, takes the project seriously, responsible and communicates well. Additional bonus is we're all on the same skill level so everyone's learning and nobody is dragging a huge load alone. We've had no issues so far and despite being fairly early in the project we're making good progress all around. Is this what a stress-free experience feels like? Pretty happy with the project in general and I think our app idea is pretty cool too.22

Despite having a chance of being jobless for a bit I thought I'd show my support because devrant is awesome5

So everyone at the company I work for is getting a new machine before Christmas
Since I do a bunch of backend development and devops stuff (despite actually being hired as an Android developer), I requested that my machine use Linux, since that's what the servers run
Windows was the fallback OS I requested, since it's what I'm most familiar with
The machine that I will probably get will be a Mac
Stay tuned for further updates to this most thrilling of tales10 -
Who said Linux cant be hacked?
Despite of best practises, now I am out of the sudoers list of my own machine.15 -
I actually like Microsoft these days. Despite developing on Mac machines, we use VSTS for code repo, build/release pipelines and work item tracking, and Azure for all things cloud. It all works incredibly well together and at low cost.
Microsoft has changed ethos massively in the last few years. In my opinion, the classic dev mantra of “Microsoft is shit and evil, Linux is flawless” is outdated and getting kind of boring.6 -
* sigh * I think my hard drive died (despite my S.M.A.R.T telling me it was "healthy"). I can't boot into anything13

Thank you SoundCloud for telling me your app has an update despite the fact my phone auto updates when connected to WiFi.20

Despite beeing one of the strangest ads I ever saw, this one is a beautiful and scary example of advertising tracking. Although I used a vpn and incognito mode I saw this ad on a page really not tech related at all.6

"Hey Jamcris11,
Be apart of our cool programming project?"
"Hell yeah, sign me up".
Three weeks later.
Proceeds to me being the only person contributing to the project in anyway (despite having a full time job meaning little spare time).
Guy who invited me in the first place just plays fucking Minecraft all day (he doesn't have a job or college,) puts no effort into the project at all.22 -

Just read this in a blog post by Jon Arundel, I think he's spot on:

The FCC Chairman is going ahead with his plan to repeal net neutrality despite objections from fellow commissioners, the CTO, more than a hundred members of Congress, senators and of course, the people.
What the fuck is wrong with this guy? How far up your own fucking ass does your head have to be to ignore basically everyone's vote against you? What the fuck. This guy is a really piece of fucking work. I hope this bounces back to bite him in the ass real hard.15 -
Having debates on order of operations. The one that is hot again is the 6÷2(2+1).
Programming and actual order of operations says the answer is 9, but everyone argues it is 1. Well before 1970 that was the case. SMH. Despite showing them the rules and work, they still say theirs is the correct way.
With programming and Excel formulas I deal with every day I do this without even pausing.40 -
It has happened again. The EU has passed article 11 and 13 which has now doomed the internet for all EU Citizens.
After GDPR passed, tons of people became more aware that the EU parliament has that much control over everyday life things. Thus there was much more scrutiny over what else they may pass.
Despite expert testimony on why the articles are bad, they rejected all amendments and passed it as is.
It is no longer worth it to serve EU customers. I’m sorry guys, but I’m out.

So am I the only one here who is still saving up to buy the latest 15 inches macbook pro despite of all those cons?
How I wish dell xps can run Mac OS X. Meh 😩
Hhmm or should I buy dell xps and just install Ubuntu?19 -
I took part in a programming competition yesterday. The computer provided to me crashed just before we begun and took five minutes to reboot. I wrote an inference engine to solve a problem that would have put me in the top 5, but they refused to accept my solution because it was seconds after the submission time despite them being aware I started later than everybody else.2

I'm kind of disgruntled that I've only worked with one ninja level developer in my career (small market) and he was an insane dick. Despite my hatred, I treated him kindly and respected him. I wanted to learn from him but he didn't want to teach.
Ninja devs, don't be that guy.6 -
Got an email stating that our meal preferences for the upcoming conference were finalized and that we needed to make sure they were right. Checked and saw my shellfish allergy was not included despite my email from the week prior asking them to update that.
Got an email back that gave me a good long “are you fucking kidding me” pause.
It just said “Check your drafts I didn’t receive that email.”
So I forwarded the original and just put “:)” in the body.
I need a new new job.6 -
I still nuke Ctrl + S so often while coding/editing a document that I sometimes think i'm just borderline maniac. This is one of those paranoid habits that has stuck with me since my early coding days, despite a majority of editors having auto save enabled. What other weird/awkward habits do you have that you cannot get rid of no matter what?10

Imagine being on vacation and the first notification you see on your phone in the morning is from your colleague on Teams:
"Hey! Are you available for a call despite the vacation?"
Fml and fuck me for being too kind to even spend time answering his questions instead of ghosting him.16 -

Despite all the great technology we have available to us, I still find a pencil and a sheet of paper to be among my most useful programming and debugging tools. -
800 line file.
Could be 300 lines but despite having version control, the devs didn't have the balls to remove any of the code. Just commented it out or appended _old to the function names.
"It's easier to undo than version control"
Sure, but how much time are you spending wading through the waist-high swamp of shitty, useless code?7 -
It's 03:43 bst here and the dicks across the hall are still playing ridiculously loud music, and despite me asking them to shut up since I'm in work at 7 they refused. A quick nmap and I have the mac of the desktop playing the music....7

Merry Christmas Everyone. Despite of the things that happened this year. We'll still go to our code base and look how awful we code it haha. Happy Holidays everyone!3

The one time a piece of software I was semi-responsible for maybe had been compromised. But I was student dev so I wasn't even brought into the meeting despite being the only person in the entire organization who knew how it worked. Gr8 politics, glad you hennies trust me. They came out and a good colleague of mine was brave enough to come over and ask if maybe I knew how this and that worked and I could clear up the confusion they spent 45 minutes on in 20 seconds 🙃4

At this day, July 18 in Eastern timezones, one of the globally recognized animation studios in Japan, Kyoto Animation - more known as KyoAni, has been deliberately burned by an arsonist, and has claimed 20 lives and counting.
Please give a moment of silence for the fallen in KyoAni. All they wanted was to make people smile despite the low wage situation and Japan and this happens.8 -
It gets really irritating when I get turned down for jobs because, despite provable experience, I don't have a degree in computer science.
I can't go back to college because one of the colleges I was at lost my transcripts. And here, by law, the college you are applying to must have your entire transcript history before admitting you.
So I'm fucked and just hoping to find a company focused more on provable knowledge than a piece of paper. Yay.19 -
Finished my internship today, turns out I won't be getting hired because upper management is cutting back due to COVID.
Fuck fuck fuckity fuck, compared to the horror stories I've read here, it was beautiful. The work experience was super worth it though, despite the intern pay. Time to start looking for a real job I guess.2 -
random question/minirant:
I need something to do on my phone besides devRant and chess and repeatedly checking my email. Suggestions? I'm getting really sick of chess, and there's only so much content on devRant. And email? Nothing interesting for days (and weeks prior) despite waiting on so. many. people. to get back to me.
Bleh.
Random research is a given. And no, mobile games and social media are pointless.20 -
Why is it that all University sites are full of broken links, despite the fact that some claim to offer the best software engineering courses out there.6

Looks like despite 20-30 years on the market all popular text / spreadsheet editors are still loading whole file to memory.
What the fucking wankers. WTF are they doing whole day besides changing menu layout and icon colors ?
Clearly development today is lead by bunch of idiots from marketing department accompanied with HR hiring social network self made models.
What a fucked up world.
Let’s add AI to our software but fails to open 150MB csv file.
Great job everyone. Great job.4 -
When your colleague just throws all their views into a single directory, despite you having a already created a very methodical and self-explanatory structure.

Reading a Ray Wenderlich book to try give RxSwift a go. Book is well written and going well. But I’m grinding my teeth at the fact all the code samples use 2 space indentation. Despite the fact apples standard is 4 ... and you know tabs would let us decide.
I know it’s a small thing, but it’s really pissing me off3 -
Back then when I was working on a website logic, I didn't want to comment my code. Despite that, I wrote some things which were obvious and I thought it would be funny to explain obvious things in code. I made a joke out of commenting.
Recently I needed to use a part of the code for a different project and the comments were exceptionally helpful and I would be lost without it.
So, kids, comment your code!14 -
I was inspired by the abundance and uniformity of modern data-selling startups. Despite being different companies, they have a lot in common: questionable ethics, lack of a real business model other than selling data, pseudo-approachable and friendly bullshit aesthetics, talks about dIvErSitY and eQuALitY. Now, I propose one more thing for them to have in common — this logo. I hereby announce it to be public domain now, free to use for all.4

when I graduated my dad would 'help' me in my job hunt by cutting out postings from the New York Times for "Lead Software Engineer" positions at Microsoft, Google etc despite the fact that I really was just trying to get a junior level position...2

The new MacBook Pro's front is NOT metal. It's made out of some plastic despite looking like brush metal.
I learnt this the hard way when i accidentally ran my keys across it and gave it a nasty scratch.
Every time i see it, i feel an irritable itch that i can't scratch.
Luckily, i have the perfect bandage.24 -
Going through the typical phase of being depressed because of feeling underdeveloped skill wise and ignorant knowledge wise; despite how much I learn. God, spent 3 days on a recursive dynamic programming problem and couldn't implement it right... then I decided to glance at someones solution on github and turns out he did what I couldn't do in 70+ lines of code in 20. Sigh, just want to right concise and clear code and become a better programmer all together, but that obviously takes time. For the mean time I am feeling quite defeated.9

Worst successful application (s) you've used? Things that make money despite being terrible at what they are supposed to be good at.12

I have made a lot of friends due to code. I also made exactly one enemy.
A guy who had to turn everything into a contest to stroke his ego. He lost every time though. But he took every chance he could to shit on my code, despite demonstrating he didn’t know what he was doing.1 -
internet connection "speed" in Germany might be the reason why so many people still queuing up on the roads on their way to an office despite being allowed to work from home at least in theory10

I hereby officially revoke my rant on Paint.NET:
https://devrant.com/rants/2393372/...
After some review I've gotta say, despite its shortcomings it is pretty good for what it is.
So yeah, gonna own that error in judgement.

I am great at getting raspberry pi projects about 97% done...
But absolute shit at that last 3%.
Working on a home built WiFi repeater and deauther (front) and a 1TB SSD nextcloudpi server (back). Definitely outside my comfort zone, especially the first one. Despite having mad time on terminal, and SSH every day, I am very soft on this networking shit.
wpa_supplicant, though I do not now, I will come to understand your mysteries. -
Decided to go flexbox despite issues with Safari 6 (global usage at 0.02%). The boss, its wife, a friend of them and a coworker NEVER UPDATED Safari on its devices and send tons of angry emails with captures of the broken site. This is the biggest 0.02% ever seen!!3

I was consciously aware that I had work today at 4am. Despite my full awareness I only managed to squeeze an hour of sleep in because I have many bugs in my biological makeup. Fml1

I am beyond fucking frustrated at this point. I feel pretty confident that I was just blocked from getting a position at work because they believe the current team I am on will fall a part without me. I’ve asked for a backup for years but they never got one for me. I have great folks on my team but despite knowledge transfers, they just don’t get it. I am ready to grow within the company, develop better soft skills, learn more about the other groups etc. but I don’t have the opportunity to. Also, I was passed up for someone outside of our group to manage our team a few years back despite being the lead since day 1. That’s two promotions I’ve been denied despite getting exceeds on every review I’ve ever had. I am so pissed that they would do that to me.5
-
What is it with inabhorrent arrogance plastered all over IT as a whole?
I get younger, inexperienced people telling me I'm wrong constantly, criticising my work despite them having no clue (visible from their own work standard and TTL of their projects) .
Similar from older generation, who are resistant to change and aren't even part of my team telling me I'm doing my job badly.4 -
So this happened with me today.
Me: Will you be Gradle of my Android Studio?
Girl (Designer): I can't build you.
Despite the negative, my affection increased twice fold on her now. -
Signet, the google auth library, is somehow throwing a DivideByZero error, despite the only math in the file being linear back-off (`sleep retry++ * 0.3`). Also, the line it’s getting thrown on very specifically throws an entirely different error: a Signet::AuthorizationError.
What is even going on?
Also this worked yesterday.
🥺10 -
God I love being able to use MathJax on GitHub, despite it being quite a pain to get it perfect.
https://github.com/OpenlyEducated/...

( Still needs color though.. )
Also the bug that broke all inline mathjax for a week wasn't exactly helpful..1 -
My biggest pet peeve is whenever you're in the toilet, you know, doing a number 1, a lazy number 1, a number 2 or the combo. For most toilets, including in our workplace, its very clear that the door is locked. Usually it is either written or signified by the color red. Despite all this, you still have those people who will almost batter down the door despite being CLEARLY LOCKED.
Fucking hell, that grinds my nuts.5 -
Relentless, thankless routine of coming in every day and everybody hating the software team despite working our ass off to help everybody and fix mistakes that upper management has caused.1
-
So they were renovating the toilets on my floor this week and despite all the noise from the drilling and taking down walls I was very productive 😍4
-
So it's been nearly 3 months and HR have yet to process my authorised promotion, or pay me any of my new salary, despite it being escalated multiple times thanks to my boss, Head of, and Director.
...Does HR live in a separate reality to our own? Am I being played for a fool? Am I expecting too much of a HR sector in a Fortune 100 company..? 🤔4 -
Just solved this riddle hidden in my friend's agency homepage. www.webfactory.ie. I am not looking for a job myself, but the riddle was fun anyways (despite short).1

IT'S CAPS RANT TIME!
MYSQL ERRORS ARE SO USELESS! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH
I JUST WANT TO ADD A FOREIGN KEY BUT 'Cannot add foreign key constraint' KEEPS COMING UP, AND THE STACK OVERFLOW ANSWERS INDICATE THAT IT COULD BE -LITERALLY- ANYTHING!
THIS IS OF COURSE, AFTER PHPMYADMIN GIVES ITS OWN ERRORS FOR TRYING TO USE THE DESIGNER TO ADD THE RELATION. IT ONLY WANTS UNIQUE FOREIGN KEYS, DESPITE ONE OF THE MAIN USES OF FOREIGN KEYS BEING MANY-TO-MANY AND ONE-TO-MANY RELATIONS!3 -
Handed over my first client's project today.
It was revamp for an internet radio site and also the first project that I used Bootstrap 4 in. On top of that, it was the first time I have to deal with PHP and its loops.
Despite audio player errors (somehow, they lost access to the streaming host and hence no audio source), I'm more or less satisfied with the final outcome.
But wait, why that stupid icon is not vertically centered? -

Could it be that despite multiple meetings emails and face to face conversations none of you have provided me with what I actually need?
Yes I can create you new email and SMS campaigns. But I need two little things first.
1 The template text.
2 The sign off forms from compliance

I'm freelance and I work from home, despite being repeatedly told however my friends have no problem calling in for a cup of tea and a chat in order to stop that work. As a result, I've got to work late to make up for the lost time they've caused me during the working day.
I'm sick to death to explaining this to my friends who just don't understand that I "work from home," and that "I am not home from work."8 -
I mean, impossible for who? For someone working 9-5 without procrastination, sure there are.
I have been a student and a procrastinator most of my life, so yeah, a 40 hour week's work is possible in two days with minimum sleep.
Also done massive projects in a week's time. If you know what you're doing, it's not that impossible.
Although, I find working with others almost impossible in some occasions, specially where you don't see eye to eye despite however much you try. (time-wise, speaking)9 -
The most ignorant client is the one requiring you to build his crapsite on WordMess despite of you showing him the glory and beauty of a proper CMS which has a brain-amputee-friendly back-end.

His reason to prefer WP:
"I know how to use it."
War, war never changes...4 -
I did an interview last week.
Recruiter asks me about why I want to work for their company.
I'm too honest and tell them I mostly just don't want to work for my current company.
Next day get screened out despite being extremely qualified for the job.
Shouldn't have been so honest in that interview lol.8 -
I've been interested in security for years but despite knowing the theory I've always had this disconnect with actually doing it, about two years ago I finally managed to find and exploit my first cross-site scripting vulnerability in my companies Product whilst doing some routine acceptance testing. It was a penny drop moment for me which has led to some very interesting projects and It was pretty badass.

I wish LinkedIn profiles come under IP protection- I have a friend who copied my linkedin profile word-by-word, except experience and title section. He even updates his profile every time I update mine !!!
He asked me last week whey I haven't endorsed him, despite requesting multiple times. Hmm.1 -

Dropped Comcast cable & phone. I have to keep their internet. 11 days ago after cancelling the service on the phone I went to UPS store and shipped their equipment. A few days ago I get confirmation email that my equipment has been received by them. Today I get my bill and it is the whole bill despite my cancellation and despite the fact that I was without any service for 13 days. So I call them for a wtf session and they tell me my services show all up and nothing has been cancelled. I have to call the cancellation department again tomorrow because they are closed Sundays. I have had at least twenty calls with Comcast this month. At this point I am willing to pay twice the going eat for Google Fiber just to get rid of Comcast once and for all.5

Just figured out that while I was on vacation they made a really well thought (not) decision to switch to Firebase despite having 4 fully managed VPS with low usage.
Wanna know what the big deal is?
The only one who looks like knows anything is the fucking intern.
I was trying to understand the thought process and everything revolved around "its real time" argument.
No one knows how the api really works, the benefits of "real time" , and we are using the free plan :)
Yeah... People really do overthink things here... -

Client: Can you lower that estimate?
Client: I know you’ve done, but can you make all this stuff behave this particular way on smaller screens, despite it not being in spec?
Me: *internal sigh* sure.
The perils of newly being a contractor and wanting to please.
At least I’m working from home and the money is good I suppose 😂3 -
Best career decision:
Doing many different jobs before programming, move to capital city to pursue first software development job without money, college degree, place to stay and plans for future.
Worst career choice:
Probably would be staying in Poland despite many opportunities to travel around the world, earn big money or work on really cool things as software developer but I won’t know until I die.2 -
Probably a mathematician. I would be a very different person though, because a key element to my current lifestyle is that I never have to use my mathematical insight to the fullest and therefore I can work despite hangovers from nearly any substances. If I had to be sober to get anything done I'd need a level of self control which is very far from me at the moment.11

Anyone have a Pebble watch that they wear still? Is it still supported despite them being shut down?6

Since few days I’m sick. Literally, I look like shit and feel even worse. Some combo disease with fever, diarrhea and things like that. And despite that, I tried to work from home today. And surprisingly - I’ve made everything I planned to do: 100% PHP multi process server, which sends push messages via GCM and APN, emails and SMS (using different operators API and talking AT commands directly to modems). I’m a bit proud of myself. And now I feel like I’m dying, so it’s time to get some pills and take a looong nap ;)3

Oh man setting up postfix and dovecot (plus things like rspamd) is a pain in the ass.
But it's worth it, having your own mail server is just quite a good feeling.
Now I just need to find out how to get it to pass the spam filter of Google, despite the server and the DNS zone being well-configured (better than my school's mail server according to tests, but that one still manages to pass. I have no idea why.)9 -
I actually found a use for Outlook's scummy default behaviour to open links in Edge and not the default browser.
On my company laptop I mainly use Librewolf because it allows installing plug-ins despite group policy. I only use Edge for Azure DevOps and company portals because MS SSO doesn't work with Librewolf for some reason.
Because Outlook disregards the OS settings and uses Edge by default, MS software forms a sort of bubble, and I can freely set Librewolf as my default browser.9 -

I hate android studio. No wait i love it. No i hate it. Can't seem to make up my mind about it. Its slow, kills my computers performance, messy interface. But despite that it's something appealing about it. Everything seems to be avaliable for previewing as one work.. aaand then it breaks my computer and I hate it again..3

I like helping out on weird little projects that keep my brain fed. One of our IT guys needs a little form that can auto inject some info from a small data store (Google sheets). There's a few caveats within his specs. All can be done with some js relatively easily.
But because I said it can be done he thinks it'll take 10mins and now suddenly he's putting pressure on me to do it, despite me also having an actual job to do! So frustrating!2 -
It's been 1 month in my first dev job.
I'm really happy but there is one problem...
Despite my role as a full stack dev in a fullstack team, I deal with only frontend stuff so far.
I asked to get some backend tasks from my boss, and he said "in due time".
Is it because I'm a junior? Is it normal?5 -
Absolutely nothing excites me anymore in this field. Tech is such a commodity and I’m just so over all of it. Not gonna go all Ted Kaczinsky but I find myself longing for a time when not everything and everyone was controlled by computers. We’re not far from total transhumanism and despite what some may believe, that’s not a good thing.4
-
So in the last 2 hours I felt both frustrating and happiness, because of Xcode and code signing.
So what I did yesterday was removed all the Xcode certificates on my keychain because I had major issues getting the newest version of the certificates despite have auto signing enabled.
Without much notice until going to send the iOS app today through Fabric I came across an error while uploading the newest build :/
Googling it I found the same issue on stack overflow with only two answers one being fastlane, which just automated the process to the same error LOL
So anyways I found the solution and was quite happy about it :D I had to go to the apple developer website and download the right certificate DESPITE the auto signing ...
Anyways uploaded and done!
Also added a stack overflow answer in regards to it, I hope it helps someone out.
Oh and I emailed fabric to ask for help and 30 mins later emailed them basically saying NVM fixed it! Lol
Fuck you Xcode lol -
Worst: Uni called us back for offline exams in the middle of pandemic despite our attempts of thwarting it.
Best: Thankfully none of the people I know got infected and we got some time together before we graduate.3 -
Stackoverflow is full of pedantic cunts who can’t admit they don’t know how to answer your question, I just spent 20 minutes having 4 people tell me because they didn’t have “the full code” they couldn’t help with the problem, despite by the end of me posting more and more (completely unrelated) code they were LITERALLY complaining because I hadn’t added fucking “#include” statements 😑7

So yeah, despite the technological advancements at present. Paying a lot of money just to have an internet connection with a maximum speed of only 5mbps, and having no connection during the evening.5

I left my previous job to concentrate on finishing up University. I've been working full-time at another company and doing freelance on the side since then.
Not too long ago I saw my old boss and he told me i shoud apply back at the company and get back working Front-end.
I went to check the job posting. To my surprise, the qualifications they were asking were completely different than what I was doing at the time.
I'm no longer qualified for my old job despite being more experienced and still learning. -
Despite all the code bugs, manager worries, colleagues' annoyances, self pity, low self esteem, constant guilt all the way, we are still alive and kicking
I guess 2022 will be nothing different but I also wish it will be super interesting and satisfying
Wish You And Your Families a Very Happy New Year 2022!1 -
Managed to get my awful phone rooted and Lineage working on it despite it not being supported on my phone.
I actually really like my phone now, its almost like a brand new one.
I know nothing about phones, so this really was a cool accomplishment for me. I bet there are a ton of new things my phone is capable of now that I don't even know about.
So far, I am very pleased and excited to learn how to use my phone to its full advantage from now on3 -
Idk despite whatever my resume may suggest, I think I'm still a Junior. Dunno if that'd ever change tbh. I mean, that's the downside of "cutting edge tech", right?
I don't have any advice.
Everything important has already been said by somebody out there.7 -

Do, as many of you fellow developers, I have a social pressure to do something with my life over the weekends, instead of geeking out or reading new best practices ..
So I finally decided to go see the Irish Curragh regatta organized by the Irish in Barcelona association ..
Nice and sunny Barcelona, besides the sea ..
Came home after three hours with a sun stroke, lobster face, completely blind despite the sun glasses, and with a terrible dizziness .. on my bike!
And they wonder why we spend time with our computers at home ..1 -

javascript is garbage
typescript despite best intentions, regardless of how well it's executed, is still garbage as it's some sort of band aid on top of javascript, and javascript is garbage
Before you ask, yes I'm garbage at front end development5 -
Today I was reminded of a valuable lesson... Never compare strings with == in java... Just spent like 30 minutes wondering why my string that I was getting from a browser parameter wasn't equalling the value I was checking for...
Apparently when I get a value from a requestParameter in spring, despite being a string it doesn't get a hashCode for some reason, or at least it got a hashcode of 0, so my strings weren't comparing because of that...21 -

If any of you have been following my last few rants, you'll know I've been working on a project with a particularly difficult client, trying to meet wholly unrealistic deadlines with only one other developer.
The situation has reached the climax. The client had a call with our project manager and boss on Monday to discuss things. Despite them still not having paid a single bill since October, they've demanded the release date be moved to the 6th April. Apparently we'd agreed to release on this date, despite making no such promises, the (optimistic) deadline we were working towards has always been, since it was set about 2 weeks ago, the 16th April.
Apparently AWS migration won't take as long as we think it will, because the designers that do the CSS for this project say so, despite knowing nothing about the architecture of the requirements of the system once live (like if backups are required and what of).
The bottom line is that client is ending development with us the day after the project goes live to give it to their own in-house team. If they want us to work more after the date, they have to buy blocks of days.
To make things better, a large part of new functionality relies on an external API we can't even begin to do learning tests with, let alone integrate due to back-office errors on their end. They've had since Friday to give us our token, yet here we are.
Something tells me my holidays booked for for the first week of April are going by the wayside.4 -
Is it weird that, despite the professional setting, when a client actually thanks us/me for swift/efficiently done job that I feel a little happier with myself?1
-
You guys, who despite crazy commute and work hours, still find time and energy for side projects: I salute you. You're phenomenal. Teach me your ways4

Work as a Dev in telecoms company that announced they had profited in the year despite the pandemic but were now... still freezing all salary increases and bonuses in case it might go badly. Not even inflation increase and no mention when it will be reviewed.
What had it been like at your companies with salary freezes? I already work alot and get paid little, was going to ask for a raise next month. Thinking I'll leave instead...2 -
Last. Fucking. Exam. Coming. Up. Soon.
Just... I'm a bundle of confused emotions, knowing that I'll probably never sit in another mentally draining exam. Unless I'll have to sit for exams during phd, if I ever manage to do one.
I'll miss the adrenaline rush and the feeling of relief after the exam, despite however much I fucked it up. I feel like I'm completely closing one big chapter and stepping into my middle ages. 😞4 -
There was a lesson in HTML during high school... had to learn C++ in Uni because it is part of my curriculum in my business major. They all mattered when I got into programming 2 years ago because my current boss thought I can be a good programmer despite being not an IT graduate... so he told me to self-study

I found out today that productivity gains by TDD doesn't actually have any empirical backing despite numerous studies.
It now goes in the same drawer as object oriented programming.6 -
Let's see what's on the menu today:
* Web Application Catastrophe Special *
Includes, but not limited to:
- Orphaned server processes in the configuration management cluster
- Microservice back-end architecture with no API documentation
- Poorly implemented cache microservice with no documentation
- Stale data causing everything to be shown as down in production, despite everything running fine
Cost: 1 developer's sanity -
I want to say my thanks to this one seeder with one seeder out of 300+, who uses that niche tui torrent client. For some reason I was struggling to get this torrent to work, all day long. Despite being connected to multiple peers at the time, I was not able to transfer any data. Fixes literally 2 pending on my system trying to resolve this and suddenly this person comes along and I have a stable transfer rate 🙏🙏🙏2

Trying to use a coworker's new API endpoint and I keep getting an "OAuth2 Bearer Token missing" error, despite triple-checking that I set the Authorization header correctly... finally dig into the source code and I find out that all their endpoints require that the bearer token be put into the request body. The fuck?6

Polyamory is weird and I'll never fully understand it. Every polyamorous relationship I've ever been in ended with my partner demanding monogamy weeks into the relationship, despite us setting firm boundaries and expectations at the beginning
And when I say demanding, I mean "be exclusive to me or never speak to me again", and these are folks that were staunchly poly at the beginning17 -
We heard you like security so we put antivirals in your docker containers despite the fact that we made you have antivirals on your machines running the docker containers.
And we won't allow to use root just in case you want to disable the av. And we don't care you need it for the docker 😂
This is how I was played when wanted to use docker containers to avoid dealing with OPS.
Some time passes, my team is going to have independent cloud infrastructure.

This phising email I just received in my yahoo account almost got me fooled with the very convincing email design, but thankfully the culprit didn't smart enough to spoof his email address.
Ohh and they attach a suspicious pdf file too despite the message didn't say anything about attachment.
Apparently the spam detector in yahoo is not very good as this one was received in my main inbox.2 -
Received a contact for a new job today, 3 months notice if you want to leave, 1 if they make you redundant. Working hours are 9- 5:30, but evenings, weekends, holidays can be requested with no extra pay or time off. Recruiter recommended I sign it within an hour of receiving it, before I had time to read it, despite them taking over 5 days to get it to me. Suddenly my new job is soured.6

Well after working a normal office job for a while I'm kinda starting to think I thrive on isolation.
All of the people, the noise, the distractions, the lights, it's all so overwhelming. I have constant anxiety attacks.
Idk does anyone relate with this? We're they ever able to overcome? Cope? Bend their employer to the will of their isolationism by working at home more often and still producing results despite the Beck and call to "please stay in the office and fit in our prescribed work time box, you robot."3 -
Why does D-Link make absolutely useless drivers? I've bought a USB modem in order to use cellular with my laptop, and the controlling software absolutely sucks. Often it doesn't recognize the device even though it's plugged in, other times it randomly decides that there's no service despite my phone right next to it getting 4 bars. This fucking piece of shit cost 30€, and it's shipped with a proprietary piece of software that's so bad it was probably written by an intern for half the price of a single device.4

I feel so fucking proud after finally finishing what i started coding
I delayed so many days and procrastinated because it seemed way too fucking hard to code it

I feel like working in Visual Studio is gonna lead to me developing really bad habits. Whenever I save, VS locks up for about 15 seconds, completely killing my momentum when I'm used to habitually saving all the time. I'm starting to consider not saving my work as often, despite knowing it'll come to bite me in the ass eventually.9

Anyone got some decent book or scientific papers to read about how looking at phone screens affect human brain ? Might be also about watching tv because I don’t see the difference, despite the size of the screen.
It’s cause I started to think that either me or everyone around is complete idiot. -
So there is this place I have been interning for a while. It's a health related project funded by an international organisation.
The first part was last year, June to Dec which was ok. The problem started this year, Feb to July. Despite signing a contract, I (along with other interns) have not received our pay which was supposed to be monthly.
It's unprofessional and frustrating. Moreso, some of my bosses are my lecturers. So guys, ask before you trust. -

been about two weeks since my rust journey begin, and i've got to say, i love it. web frameworks with static type checking; amazing, standardised package manager; what a breeze, and macros; despite stating that i don't really see them as useful in earlier posts, they are really helpful. as well, in response to the slow "cold-start" build times, it's the price to pay for top-of-the-line compilation-time error checking. rust is amazing)3

I heard elementaryOS has a mac-like UX. Anyone can reccomend?5 -

why.... why on this freaking earth would you go an enable Hypervision on me?
seriously #Windows, you are starting to drive me over the edge.
theres nothing like powering up a centos server - yea not even a DE, (that had no issues yesterday) and getting "VT-x is not available".
the last thing im going to think to look at is you enabling your bullshit despite it was already disabled, -
I'm tired of taking breaks, only to find bugs IRL.
I draw the line at my grapes throwing an exception!
Debugging the crane game app, my ISPs aggro DHCPv6 query vs their WAN6 scripting and the label printer at Quest Labs was annoying enough.
I don't even know how to tag this.
A day ago I tried ordering a coffee and doughnut on Doordash. I thought, I must be too tired/missing something. Dunkin' Donuts didn't have doughnuts on the menu, despite the header of "Donuts and Bakery", I called them... A few minutes later the reason was found. Their PoS system upgraded, changing the formatting of the doughnut options so a minor bug caused it to show as fully updated, despite actually disabling the doughnut menu options... today it's the weirdest, possibly inappropriate-looking, grape I've ever seen... and I grow 5 varieties of grapes. Maybe if I get drunk enough(wine?) later, I'll be able to not debug or re-engineer anything for a few hours.
Any suggestions on how to stop iterating through a debugging loop IRL 24/7 is certainly welcolmed.
Now, wtf do I do with this, mildy disturbing, grape?7 -
Is it right to think when you learn one language completely, then it is very easy to learn other languages?
Like today i am watching php tutorials and i see it's just syntax changes and everything is java despite of it is interpreted4 -
Made the mistake of restarting my pc at work this morning. Came up with configuring Windows, do not turn off.
30 minutes later, same message showing.
Despite message saying don't turn off, i had had enough and turned it off, think it would be completely broken.
Booted fine, no issues?!?! Thanks Microsoft.2 -
I haven't seen as much dedication as I have with Microsoft electing to keep IE alive despite its horrible reputation.3

Life lesson learned:
Despite good intentions, don't overengineer the front-end, when time is heavily constrained and the release is scheduled and is communicated to media outlets immediately after.
A broken release just makes the client send around multiple emails per minute with tens of people in CC.
Shit happens... at least it was a bargain for them. -
Why does Google have to buy big billboard ads at the bus stops to convince people to use Google search?
Did Google finally realize that despite being the best search engine, many of their results are still pretty shitty?
Or do they merely want to distract from the anti-FAANG (don't) be evil discussion?5 -
I'm amazed how our Frontend team are able to consistently break our Vagrant builds, despite them only using Grunt...

What interesting uses for a VPS do you guys know?
I've setup my website on VPS and it only takes 25% of 256MB RAM, despite having mysql, apache2 and other cool things running (which is why I love Linux).
Any ideas what to do with 75% that's left?15 -

Have you ever tried using sqlite3 from npm inside a docker container?
Yeah, it doesn't build on Alpine, despite being among the most popular Linux distros thanks to Docker.1 -
It just hit me that despite being possibly the most object-heavy language out there, JavaScript actually wasn't even properly object oriented for the longest time. No language-level support for Encapsulation, Inheritance, and without a strict class system, it can never really have polymorphism or abstraction.
Since literally everything is an object, it's impossible to make it object oriented 🤯6 -
Making a dev enemy? Quite simple. Asked too many questions for the dev. I wanted to learn and understand his reasons, he thought I was undermining his position. Other time, I forced him to make the source code be consistent with the structure of applications existing code. Dude came, made some commits adding features in places suitable for him, despite the code having clean layer separation, which took me long time to achieve.

When you spend the last year of your life working on a codebase from scratch to be told the cause of the issue by someone that has contributed zero lines of code despite outlining the issue is actually 3 very separate issues.
Upon fixing one of aforementioned issues, you are told it's wrong and the description of the issue is changed to one of the others but somehow is still the same issue. -
Here at the end of high school they make you create a sort of mini-thesis and/or a conceptual map. Which movie or TV show do you think has caused the most damage and confusion about how programming actually works?
For me it's Silicon Valley with their "Tabs VS Spaces" scene where the dev who advocates spaces actually hits the spacebar key 4 times manually.
(In reality no does that - everyone just hits the tab key and most Editors convert the tab into 2 or 4 spaces bars on your setting. In fact a vast majority of github repos use spaces - despite some of their devs now thinking "I use tabs")1 -

I'll graduate tech uni in a year. I want to work in a start up when I am done. A few days ago my father offered me a position in his company as CTO. Do I take the high paying job that I might not enjoy or do I try my luck with a startup/ software company...7 -
Does this book worth reading?
Hello I've finished several books about JavaScript already and many of them mention this one
JavaScript: The Definitive Guide, 6th Edition [2011]
I am a bit embarrassed, because despite it looks like a thorough 1000 pages guide, its last edition dates 2011 year.
From one point of view, it should contain core concepts that still remain the same, from the other, reading 2011 book in 2018 sounds like a not very good decision.
What would you say?8 -
That despite my skills and education, I'm unable to survive on my own, and am nothing more than a corporate cog with a limited lifespan.

So part of my ok assignment was to Code a simple quize game. So I used a while loop to initiate the quiz. One of the constraints was that after 6 questions answered wrong the quize ends and if you make it to the end of the quize it gives you the number of questions you got wrong. 🤣 The damn code always ran to the end despite having gotten 6questions wrong.
The problem ? Turns out I needed a break. 😂😂😂 Pun intended. -

One company was looking for a developer, so they found my FB profile (yeah, Facebook). They scan my profile and contact me via Messenger and offer me a job. At the same time my previous company was in financial crisis and I'm the only staff left, so I felt so bored.
I give them a visit, then, voila, today is my first day there. Despite a bit far from my home, but it have wonderful workplace and apply good development practices. I'm comfortable here thank God. :)2 -
I'd answer the question, but whenever I sit and I'm completely in the zone, there always someone who'll fucking tap me on the shoulder.

I am learning C# and devRant helps me keep my concentration and attention in check during the day. Helps me stay in the zone longer and interacting with a developer community helps me adopt a mindset which helps me absorb a different way of thinking which is crucial for somebody that comes from an "opposite" field - art and design. I would not have been able to have this community "in real life" otherwise.

What baffles me is how despite being on version 3 of Swift, Apple still havent updated Xcodes refactoring tools to support it. All I want to do is rename a variable or function but oh no. "Xcode can only refactor C or Objective-C code". Yet they are plowing on with new features in other areas like the interface builder but completely ignoring the tools that make IDEs useful.

Fucked up my old phone (picked up an overheating phone with super cold hands and the screen exploded) and my new one is way faster despite having almost exactly 1/2 the CPU power (8-core 2.13GHz in old, 4-core 1.4GHz in this one) due entirely to the Android build not being dogshit. They both only have 2GB of RAM, so i'm still sitting at like 300MB of free RAM with nothing running, but it's a start.7

Me in Backend dev contract. Everything worked great because I translated simple themes and worked with modules.
Did some work as full stack to same agency as a favor. Mostly frontend work but ok.
Now being judged as a frontend despite my multiple protests of not being a frontend developer. Nor do I have any interest in improving my skills as one.
It's now affecting my mental health and physical health. Thinking about not renewing that contract. -
How does on-call work for your company? Our product is mostly used in the US so any pages we get are mostly in the US time. Despite that, our team has US and EU folk and me (an EU folk) am expected to wake up middle of the night for any pages that occur. I consider this a really shit model not just for employees but for the business, but I wanted to know if this is common and I'm just not seeing the point of this.20

I worked on a smart locker software with another developer a year back. Really cool stuff where you mix Node.js with real hardware. That another developer built the thing on Angular, despite not having a clue how to use it. We got fired, but those smart lockers are deployed to a lot of places now and whenever I see one I stop and feel proud because the API that powers it was written by me. Despite not getting a cent due to that other developer.

They aired wrong information without hesitation despite India being world's rapidly growing IT hub.6

I even did some aptitude tests for the heck of it and somehow managed to get a badge for every one of them, despite how backwards, outdated and irrelevant some of the questions are.1 -
Objectively, I know I should leave.
The company hasn't been doing well. At all.
Projects are a shit show.
Despite everything everyone is kind and respectful, though.
My team's great and boss is good.
Pay is okay, too.
As the lead dev I am appreciated for my work and knowledge.
But the company itself seems unable to learn despite the coworkers being young.
My team doesn't have any work now because the customer canceled the project.
There have already been layoffs. 40% of people gone.
Other companies also pay well.
But damn my team is amazing.
Although I am the most experienced developer. But I know I am not THAT experienced, really. i am still young and would love to work with someone MORE experienced.
Maybe i am just lazy. Then I will likely soon be lazy and unemployed.
Oh no....2 -
completely unrelated to work but when i'm a speedreading retard and i meet somebody who is an even bigger speedreading retard, it infuriates me despite the irony of pot calling kettle black

You know, one thing that really puzzels me is that people are willing to use WinRar despite there being plenty of better alternatives (*cough*7-Zip*cough*) that doesn't slap an activation notice in your face every fucking time.4

I'm a bit frustrated. I'm 23 and I finished a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering last 2015. Working on a career path in cyber security. Is it normal to just understand and test the concepts and not fully memorize everything? It really bothers me that I feel I don't know anything despite developing small tools, testing other people's work, reading about related topics and playing with Kali.5

The World Wide Web Consortium has, despite a lot of opposition and controversy, gone over everyone's heads and approved (without proper unanimous consent or compromise) DRM standards for the internet. What fun.

3 days from planned go live date and the client turns around and says "We need these features added before we can go live". New features pretty much double the existing workflow, and require extensive rework. Client is insisting on meeting the original date, despite the product being "not usable" until the changes are made.

So my chrome on android has appearently started looking like something my colleagues toddler could have drawn, despite that I have all the "modern" settings disabled in chrome://flags
Anyone knows any other workarounds now that this appears to have stopped working?
ALSO FUCK YOU GOOGLE FOR FORCING THIS SHITTY AND UNINTUITIVE DESIGN DOWN OUR THROATS, STOP VALUATING PRETTY PIXELS OVER PRODUCTIVITY3 -
FFS! Some of my friends convinced me to get Instagram half a year ago despite me absolutly hating it. And now I apparently have a stalking problem at my hand cause of it.
Not that some of my friends would stalk me but some brain damaged dude I had the unfortunate pleasure to meet four years ago. Had blocked him back then but he somehow found my account despite no personal info on it.8 -
I love how using the windows authenticator app sometimes just ends with "denied" status despite doing everything right to approve the request because, of course. Do it again.

In client terms, a “3rd party” is akin to Angelina Jolie. Despite the promise that you’ll be able to have an enlightening conversation over a nice meal and hopefully hook up afterwards ... sorry, it ain’t happenin’. You’re just gonna have to fantasize about it while you take care of business yourself.

currently setting up a repo for a git release branching demo because despite the fact we have a model in place, it was completely ignored when it came to release time with changes being pushed straight to the main develop branch *sighs*

What's your current remote work policy?
Our CEO said we have to go back to office next week, despite government strongly recommends to work from home. He says "I don't care what government says, government is not paying our salaries. We need to produce value in this company!"
Wuuuut??6 -
Around 14 hours. I was working on a very difficult (at the time, this was my intro level course) c++ project my professor assigned. No one could finish it despite the many hours we put in.2

1) Use Jmockit to write some test utilizing $clinit method
2) Have private static field in enum (along with static initialization block)

Anyone playing the 'hacked' game on android ? despite the name, It's just about logic and I have been kind of addicted to it for the past week ( the plot seems purposely built off every bullshit hollywood producers thrown at us for decades regarding hacking) just wanted to thanks the dev for it, maybe they ' ll pass by devRant and see this ;)2

Talked with a recruiter a few times. He kept presenting jobs that were 1.5 hours away, despite how many times I told him specifically my car would not make it that far regularly.
I eventually started ignoring his calls and emails... Until he called my mom, and a former boss (reference), leaving messages with them to call him back. I don't even know how he got my mom's number.
I wrote him a very clear email after that and haven't heard from him since.1 -
SHUT IT DOWN !
SHUT IT DOWN FOREVER !

I've talked to people, psychiatrists and tried religion just so I can stop watching porn.
I have a beautiful wife, MSc degree in engineering and well-payed job.
But for some reason, whenever I'm alone my mind bursts images of porn, and before I know it, I'm watching porn.
Despite the things I've achieved, it feels like my true potential is hold back.
This influences my mood, development work and so on.
Mindfulness doesn't work, plugins to block it doesn't work and talking to someone doesn't work. Everything is tried.15 -
"Hello World!"
Yep, writing a "configure" script that passes despite the failures, is an excellent way to piss me off. Oh, did I mention that the errors weren't visible in the summary? And you sit there thinking why the compiled soft isn't linked with proper libraries. -
oh ok
my SSI (that I got due to low-income family and being a minor) is still coming in despite supposedly ending after last month's payment

Recently I had a task from my university to build some DB with forms using MS Access.
Despite of me constantly thinking that I wold accomplish this using Python+SQLite+Some GUI much faster, I've completed.
And I've got only one question left: why the hell proprietary product with giant company behind has such a terrible UX?
It' really painful to use. -
I haven't been developing any web projects for 2-3 years (Since jQuery is the only well known js library). I put my focus on other platforms.
Now I am going to be back again, and there are some angular, vue, and react going on (despite of the other js framework/library #duh).
So, how do I choose between angular, vue, or react? I have no idea.5 -
That part where some business people walk to your office expect you to listen them at once despite being really focussed.
And once you makeneye contact they drag you into a meeting room to discuss new stories which are not even close to be clear or ready.
End of the meeting your day has ended and you still didnt finish what you wanted that day. -
Holly fucking crap

First Covid and now the war which will probably become World war 3. Despite trying my best to stay positive and work on my skills as a software engineer and a professional, it has really affected my will to keep grinding and hustling in life. Please tell me I’m not the only one feeling like this.30 -

Fuck auto insurance
Why is it that every time I need to get a quote online from an insurance company, despite having seemingly well designed websites they all fucking crash!
Half way through the “next” button will stop working for seemingly no reason and I won’t be able to continue with the quote.
Is it just a ploy to get me to call? WTF! -

Best: Initiated the formal process to get a work visa, which is really the first step into settling down here after my studying period.
Worst: Have to work with with WordPress sometimes, and 80% of the other system's tech stack being new, making me feel like an absolute retard because I'm slower than a drunk snail.
Overall a nice year, despite 2020 shitting all over everyone. -
program, which should save report from db to file, running a couple of minutes:
1) despite prefetch precompiler option no fetch was prefetched, because for every next line fetch cursor was reopened with condition WHERE some_val > prev_val
2) allocated array of host variables to fetch 100 rows per call to db client api
program is running under 3 seconds now -
So there was this position in our college for part time programming/building a project. Being university students looking for part time work a lot of us applied there.
Finally the person that was selected among all of us was the person who does no work and is completely useless. If you ask her to do something she despite taking a long time doesn't produce any output.
So my question is what did the interviewers see in her that they selected her despite multiple way better people applying.4 -
I hate BT.
Today, it started redirecting me to a page saying, basically, to activate their DNS server on the router for "BT Protect" and "Parental Controls" to work, despite the fact that my parents never turned it on. Their support lines appear to be staffed with Indians taught to answer very basic questions, and forwarded me to "tech experts" from BT, a service that apparently costs £8 a month, because "the issue is out of their scope".
How is this even legal?1 -
How often do you find yourself submitting to a particular languages whims, despite everything you try to do to make it work the way you want it.3

So I'm not sure what I should learn next. Developers love vue more than react. But I prefer to work remotely and I lost the count of how many job ads require React js experience. Every employer wants react. Would you still suggest to learn vuejs despite this? Right now I know javascript and I abuse jquery (front end developer here)2

I linked the wrong week for my no. 1 answer so for this one I’m gonna go with: somehow swing a law-enforcement-adjacent job despite my copious cannabis consumption.1

Getting something working that you've been stuck on for two weeks, despite telling the client, your pm and your boss that there is a much easier and quicker way to do it that doesn't involve downloading over 1000 pngs and storing them as base64 strings to form a massive pdf, damn android and it's lack of native pdf viewing

I'm running Void-Linux-musl on my ideaPad-320s and found 2 strange bugs, that I've never seen anywhere else.
1. Firefox-DRM-plugin crashes when I open Netflix or Prime.
2. YouTube videos play at slightly accelerated speed, despite being set to normal speed.
Has any one here ever seen those 2?2 -

I'm currently on elementary.
I have two monitors, one plugged to my Rx 560 and GPU and the other to onboard graphics.
Despite this my main monitor is rendered on the Intel inbuilt GPU and I have stuttery gui on my primary monitor.
(My second one is an old monitor and I can't find VGA to dvi converters, on Windows it just works so I haven't had an issue)
Please help me guys !1 -

git merge "conflicts"
(not really an issue, but still a waste of time and concentration, when every now and then, using more than one branch, small edits, merge, and rebase, git diff complains about "conflicts" that are obvious to solve for a human but still not for a machine, despite the hype about the age of AI, coding co-pilots and the like...)5 -

So for one of our applications we have this custom made build system with no real documentation made by someone who left the company and uses old tech with 2010 visual studio files
And despite never having had a chance to work with it before, im not only expected by the PM and other staff to use this command line build too to make a build for production; but also to add a whole new application to be built.
Fuck me4 -
I'm a fucking student, so no I don't recieve copies of the utility bills to my bloody halls, nor do I get paper versions of my damn bank statements, since y'know, it's 2016.

So I finally got something to allow me to pipe my network over ssh when I need it.
alias mcserversshproxy='ssh -p <port> -N -D localhost:9999 <user@server>'
I can now use the internal webpage in my network by configuring a profile in firefox as a proxy. Kind of slick!
This tutorial, despite its flaws, helped me work this out:

I’m very disappointed in PowerToys.
Especially the “FancyZones”.
I was hype when they first starting to work on their window manager.
But then....after a lot of feedback from community (which want something like an i3wm, fully keyboard driven) They come up with this??
I feels waste more time to manage window with FancyZones than not using anything at all.
I’ll stick with my custom hack window manager for now....
(Despite the limitation of win32api, it got a fully keyboard driven + auto tiling)

So, despite being pretty experienced with Linux server management, today, I failed, even after hours spent tinkering, to get Bumblebee working on an older laptop of mine (Intel i3 + Geforce 960m).
What's funnier is that before I wiped that laptop with a clean install, it was working, albeit it on an out of date kernel / driver combo.
Though curiously, despite using the newest release of Xubuntu, the Bumblebee PPA repo wasn't signed (Missing InRelease file), and further lacked one of the Package index files (For i386 i believe)
I'm about to sell the laptop tomorrow. Anyone has any hints or things I could have missed? I still have a day to work on it, and if I don't manage, I'll just put on a clean win install...4 -

Help please!
Despite having good speed, any website/app on my phone (other than Google, Youtube, Gmail, Instagram etc..) are either not opening or loading very slow.
Due to this I can't get my work done because I use my phone's internet to work on laptop.
Can't find any solution online because most people are giving solution for desktop and wifi router.
This happened after I changed my ISP. Previous ISP was working fine and now I'm regretting it.5 -
