2 hours, maybe 2.5.
No one works for more than that, it's not how brains work. Or bodies for that matter, you gotta pee eventually.
OK maybe I'm pedantic and shouldn't count breaks... But then where lies the threshold? A fifteen minute coffee break? An hour long lunch break?
Could we use scrum storypoints to brag then (I once finished 12 points in a day!) — not really, because they're not standardized units of work.
Lines of code then? Well, the dev who copy pastes Java classes would beat the guy adjusting a dense Python script, without necessarily doing more.
No, the only true measure is of course grams of amphetamine per week, and in that metric I win from everyone.
😂😅😶😣😓😟😖😧😵😰🚑16 -
When i get kids. They are NOT allowed to have online game accounts until the age of 14.
I'll still teach them how the internet works. i'll maybe allow facebook.
kids on the internet and in online games these days are toxic little brats.17 -
Fucking wix advertisements! Getting real tired of the "want a website? Why not make it yourself?" ads. You're already logging all my fucking google searches to display relevant ad info so maybe wrap your head around the fact that I'm a web dev and make my own fucking sites??6
-
Friend: "I made my page responsive"
Maybe the layout is responsive, but your articles are not. Wanna know why?
BECAUSE YOU USE FUCKING IMAGES INSTEAD OF AN HTML STRUCTURE TO DISPLAY YOUR ARTICLES7 -
Hey @dfox and @trogus, was wondering, are there any plans for items higher than 20K upvotes? I'm at more than 120K now and I'd like a new item and also maybe something to work towards :)
Also, I'm just asking/wondering, I know what a busy life is. This is nothing more than a question, not demanding anything! (I'm deffo not in the position to demand anything)
Thanks!24 -

The most famous ranter in devRant (maybe) rants now due to cleaning.
LG Ultrawide 29" monitor

Logitech wireless mouse B175

Me: Baby, I can't do what you want me to because I need to learn how to use Github and it is taking longer than it should.
Girlfriend: Don't feel bad, maybe you're just not ready to commit yet.
Me: Laugh and die a little inside because I understand the pun but not the program.5 -
Hello devRant and devs!
Next week I am going to attend to a hackathon organised by my study (24 hours) and me and another guy are going together (or, maybe one more person but not sure yet).
We are going as: team devRant!
My idea is to at least do a quick status update/vlog every x hours and maybe a webpage where I update peoples but I was wondering if anyone here would like to see the event, see the updates/vlog stuffs or maybe not at all?
It will also be live streamed onto the internet!
Would like to hear your opinions on this =).16 -
Oh my fucking god. Stop posting the same screenshot over and over again. Ok, a company tested in production. But please don't send me screenshots of that shit every goddamn few minutes you cunts. After seeing the same screenshot for 20 times I finally got it so shut the fuck up now.
And maybe you should not only think about bad software. Maybe you should remember who is using that shit8 -
QUALITY MATTERS*
*typo is a part of good quality
They just focused on quality of the Product (maybe) and not on its package.4 -
I commented on a rant that "devRant is anonymous" then later I get a ++ notification that @theNSA +1'd my comment.
So maybe not...2 -
Why are people talking to me even if they can see that i got my headphones on and i am staring at my monitor like a zombie?! Maybe i should hang two of these "do not disturb" things from hotelrooms on my ears.7

#1 life lesson I learned from coding?
Maybe not coding specifically, but I learned the difference between problem solving and solution finding.
Its helped me in a lot of areas of my life. Made friends and made enemies.4 -
I wonder why stack overflow gets so much hate on here. To me, it is a tremendously helpful community. People are usually pleasant and forthcoming.
I sometimes see questions closed as "not constructive", even though it has thousands of upvotes, but generally, if you follow the rules, you'll have a good time.
Maybe people want SO to be something it is not, or maybe people behave differently around different technologies. I mostly find Python, Djang and general web answers, and they are fine5 -
Oh, shit, someone wanted dev help or contributors after programming for decades. Shit. That is trolling. THANK YOU N()()B

Just because you can learn HTML in a day doesn’t mean that you don’t need a degree.
Did you know that your browser, HTML, CSS, Javascript, and even your operating system use linked lists, binary trees, hash tables, and other so-called “useless” data structures?
It’s important to understand the roots and fundamentals of computer science even if you won’t use that knowledge day to day.
It changes your perspective on programming once you learn what actually goes on under the hood, and makes you think twice about the impact of what you write.
It’s relatively easy to get a programming job without a degree nowadays, but it often leads to web developers claiming that degrees aren’t important to their web apps.
There is much more than just the web to computer science, and that’s something to always keep in mind.10 -
Before I learned how to code and people said that you should print hello world I thought they really meant hook it up to a printer and print it on paper1
-
I feel strange, because I don't have nothing to rant about... I work with awesome people, and my life is not so terrible... What the fuck I'm doing on devRant?
Uhm... maybe I'm the boss who everyone is ranting about...7 -
(maybe) unpopular opinion
I hate the I'm at 127.0.0.1|localhost meme
It's a loopback address
It's like saying I live at home
Like why do people think it's funny or smart to post stuff like that
Even the doormat that was going around isn't necessary accurate, since it's per machine (in this case a human).
Like if you have the home saying it's localhost then you are obviously not.
Maybe I'm just being mean here but it's like really annoying after a while4 -
Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssss, finally!
After months of searching for a damn bug I've finally found it in a 5h session. People increasingly started to worry whether this bug has been introduced because of a recent update of the programming language, but I finally found the bug in a dependency. Nobody thought it would be the dependency, because it wasn't updated in 9 months, but it seems like the update improved the networking a tiny bit, whiche caused a buffer to load a second mesage sooner than expected.
I can finally work on my side project again!
Fucking finally!2 -
You hired me to be a JavaScript developer. Just because you have stock inMicrosoft is not a good reason to try stuffing Typescript down my throat. Maybe you should have hired a Typescript developer!6
-
2 days ago: *rants about HP's design choices on a laptop*
22 hours ago: *new video from GreatScott comes out, explaining all about voltage tolerances for the charger etc*
Coincidence? Maybe not 🤔4 -
Kind of disappointing that devrant rewards and attracts bot'esque accounts for exclusively re-posting facebook memes - with stickers.
Those accounts are even as bold to constantly spam everywhere "HOW LONG DID IT TAKE FOR YOU TO GET THEM?" as if they are entitled to next day delivery, feels wasted and especially insulting to people that actually use and flourish the platform.
Not really great input nor constructive criticism, more a vent, because I know that it's the "maybe some of the shit will stick" idea - maybe some of those shit posters will turn to actual content creators on here or them being free advertisement to maybe less useless beings.20 -
> likes linux
> maybe not even install windows on shiny new laptop?
> debian-live.iso

Why only with Debian and not with literally any other flavor of Linux I've tried, which are all Debian variants?
Halp?18 -
I guess I'm not the only one who sometimes code in my dreams while sleeping. Maybe it's because working as a programmer is like a dream come true.4
-
Can ppl stop bitching out about their ides not running smoothly with 8gb+ ram? I mean 8gb ram wise is enough, unless you have 20+ browser tabs open, watching some casual porn, downloading some more porn in the background and maybe running some benchmarks just for the sake of not letting your dollars go to waste...15
-
Should I give swearing comments under the "I found my SO" rants for this week? 😔
I'm not upset. Not angry. Really. Well maybe a tad envious. Just a tiny bit. Yeah.
Screw it. Yeah I hate you all. 😭😭😭7 -
> Some unit test is not behaving well in my local environment

Not to explode when the client asks something so utterly stupid that I dont know whether I should cry or laugh. Maybe both? -
Had no internet for hours.
Called the support.
"We will fix it!" they said and they actually did. So maybe there are competent people working there as well???
No. Of course not.
Two hours later I receive a call from them. "It was not our fault. There was an update so we had to plug the cables back into the right ports."
Software update
Physical connections

We are soo sorry we missed you last Saturday night a bit before eleven.

"adding that feature is not hard, the devs are just lazy"... or maybe... just maybe development is more complicated than you make it out to be when you vomit your middle management all over it?

Me: eh probably shouldn’t push to prod on Friday, maybe not even before the first...
Co worker: no balls

Just got an email reply with the following greeting: "Dear Cheers,"
Maybe somebody should tell the "Sales Director" of Gole that Cheers is NOT a first name.2 -
All right, I am not one to criticize people based on their looks but I will make an exception. Mark Zuckerberg er one weird and extremely untrustworthy looking human.
Maybe it's preconception, maybe not.14 -
Ordered $12 worth of electronic bits and bobs. They came a day ago and tonight I hooked them up to my raspberry pi. Made some lights blink, pressed some buttons. A solid re-introduction to electronics. This time on my own time and not in school, so I don't automatically hate it. I only got a cheap kit so I don't have many toys to play with but I'm excited to get more. Maybe even buy an Arduino. Maybe even make them talk to each other idk. I'm happy.8
-
So I was looking for restaurants and this is the website of one in my area. Not sure if minimalistic design or just writen html in text editor. Maybe he hired a dev who took "will only take 30min" too seriously.4

Ok so maybe not a full rant but it really pisses me off that the version number for Visual Studio 2015 is 14.03

Free ebook: For people who are into hardware analysis, hardware/software design failures.
Hacking the Xbox

maybe some here have a use for such book6 -
"What's my email again?"
"Come on. yourfirstname@ourlastname.at."
"Ah, right."
and
"How do I unblock you on WhatsApp?"
Other than that, not much recently.
I am a walking German dictionary to her, however. I mean, I don't need to google it most of the time, so maybe not worth telling her to just google it :P4 -
Why the Fuck is PayPal only allowing passwords up to 20 characters . Even the most useless websites aren't doing that (at least not visisible, maybe they shorten it in the backend).10

Like WTF!
"the value of NaN is result of an operation that cannot produce a normal result. NaN is not equal to any value, including itself."
The funny or wierd part (maybe just for me):
"You can detect NaN with the isNaN(number) function".
Like whaaat? 😶25 -
This is random stuff.
I wonder what would happen if an innocent new user unknowingly reports a rant written by @dfox or by @trogus themselves.🤔
Maybe a beautiful post or maybe a nice email like
"Dear @... you might not have realized but @trogus and @dfox are the creators of devRant"3 -
Did a nasty thing in prod...
Very nasty.
So nasty even default graph tells me something about going yolo in prod.
Maybe it's weed. But feels like that graph tells me not to trry this shit ever again.9 -
Matryoshkas are better companions than Ducks, and here's why:
-Made with wood. The material of Men! No industrialized rubber to spread Capitalist propaganda
-Multi-layer. Explain your code with different levels of complexity. Babushka Matryoshka is keen on C!
-Never feel alone. Maybe you want some intimate one on one, maybe you want a whole party of helpers, all thanks to pocket dimensions (included with the Matryoshkas).
So what's your excuse for not having a Matryoshka Comrade cyka!9 -
-Are you programmer?
-maybe?
-can you do something for me?
-can I?

-Not again...1 -

Starting to develop a phobia of asking for help from senior devs since I can now sense their face-palm whenever I open my mouth.
Maybe I'm not ready to work as a junior dev yet...9 -
Numbers:
- Facebook Monthly Active Users = 2.4 Billions
- Facebook Fake Users, not included in MAU = 3.4 Billions (FB declared recently disabling that much)
Total: 2.4+3.4=5.8 Billions
Worldwide internet users: 4.3 Billions
Maybe a little function like this could help?
function createFBAccount() {
if (numberOfAccounts++ > peopleOnEarth) {

exit
}
...

So Zuckerberg wants to integrate Whatsapp, Instagram and Facebook together.
Maybe this is his desperate attempt to make people to not ignore his own creation - facebook.
I just hope this integration is optional and won't be forced.16 -
!rant
@dfox maybe add a "type" field at the bottom of the rant creation screen so people can classify rants as rant or !rant and not have to remember to type !rant (maybe auto-prepend "!rant")
Plus it would be nice to have the option to filter out non rants if people want to5 -
(After several hours of debugging a returned "mal formed xml" error)
Me: We found out your api does accept our XML only if its elements are in certain order.
They: Oh! yes. :)
Me: ... and since XML should not depend on order, maybe you should fix that. Or at least alert about it in docs.
They: Yes, maybe we should. :)
Me: ... OK3 -
When your co developer asks for you to check out her website and tell her any bugs you notice, I then proceed to give her 8 bugs in her code and she freaks out on me lol
Maybe your not as perfect as you think you are....3 -
- I need heat shrink tubes
- go to aliexpress, find the one set I need, order
- receive them to my PO, use a few of them
- I needed parking sensors
- to to aliexpress, find the set I need, order
- the parcel arrives in my country, on its way to my PO
- Today I visit a random site
Conclusion: AI is great at knowing what I have already bought and suggesting the exact same items I've ordered. Because if you've ordered them once you're likely to order them again, right?2 -
1. I'm lazy
2. It pays the bills

But on this website, one single thing makes me want lots of likes.

No commits?!? Well, maybe you should fucking make up your mind about what the fuck you actually want! I don't give a flying fuck about your pathetic excuses. If you don't get me a final spec, then don't try to skin my back about not delivering updates and "not showing active progress"!!! FFS!2

I honestly do not understand why people speak so badly about PHP(that's the general vibe I am getting from all these different platforms) or maybe it's because I am still new at it I am yet to find out the reason.27

Why is everything slow in windows even if I have a 16GB memory? Maybe because not SSD? 😑
Slow to open in windows:
- Docker, Postman, etc22 -
Once in a while I feel like Big Head on Silicon Valley when he was at Hooli. Guess it is not the worst thing. Maybe they will promote me to the moonshot department.
Maybe some day I will get his type of buyout. -
So my boss is telling me they plan on moving away from Qt. The value proposition is just not there anymore. Maybe I will learn to be a C++ programmer again, and not a Qt programmer. This will be interesting the next few months.
Unlearn what you have learned.6 -
Just got to work and we have no power. Maybe hand writing code in university will finally come in handy. Lol not. :)

windows update bricked my touchpad.
rebooting bricked my keyboards.
reinstalling windows fixed my keyboards but not my touchpad.
this has been going for a week now.
i'm moving back to linux. maybe i'll try arch this time around.
fuck you microsoft.
ps: my touchpad seems to be permanently bricked.26 -
Im gonna commit a cardinal sin here, but i like windows. It's maybe not as flexible as linux, but dammit i do not have the time to meddle with my os all day.12

Not learning unit testing... I've heard so many good things about them, but I've never learned how to inple.e t and use them.
Maybe I can start now, can anyone point me in the write direction?4 -
I'm not sure why but I don't seem to like latex. Maybe I could get into it but it just feels weird.10
-
Does anyone just feel tired, in general? Like the boss is (usually) alright. I like the work and I am good at it. Maybe I'm not feeling challenged enough? Honestly, I'm not sure. In the last retro, I was an 8.5/10 on the happiness index, now I'm a 4...wtf4

— *draws three overlapping blocks of content*
— it’s not going to shrink on small screens. Maybe we can put them in column for narrower widths?
— NO! They should overlap and I don’t care how you’ll do that!
So I stripped a responsive viewport, now the website is not responsive, but yes, we have “kewl and pwetty overwapping bwocks”, congratulations! -
Password guidelines...
Just got an online account for an insurance:
Allowed characters for password are a-z, A-Z, 0-9.
Really?
I tried special characters, maybe they just forgot to mention them. Doesn't work, "Password not valid".8 -
I love working from home. I finally feel I'm making progress and not just extinguishing fires and doing tech support for colleagues.
Maybe I should move to freelance work after this is over... -
Udemy is full of crap.
I got some course that had been "discounted" from $200 (I already mentioned it is an ugly trick) and it was over in like 20 minutes. The fuck?!
All the info they gave was either common sense or something you could find on the first paragraph of the Wikipedia article on the given topic (it was a soft skills course, not a technical one).
Just junk.
Maybe there are some gems out there, but I'm not sure I would risk it again.
Udemy feels like the Booking.com of courses in terms of deceitful UX, but it's not nearly as useful.
Maybe you guys have found something good there that you could say is a bargain? If so, please let me know.10 -
Upon deleting a file,
Filename too long. Delete file permanently?
*just windows things*
Maybe I'm not that well informed but wouldn't the option of allowing user to rename it or removing excess characters from filename be a better option?9 -
"Our side is certified, yours is not" ... they yelled from their ivory tower.
Then why does your side send unreasonable responses after a few dozen identical requests and doesn't respond at all shortly after?
Maybe because the certification tests only cover 10-15 requests consecutively?
Certify my ass... -
Yep, I think I'm telling everyone I majored in Psychology from now on... Maybe people will stop asking me to fix EVERYTHING--not just computers, but EVERYTHING...2
-
Slaps on the forehead!
I'm not trying to criticize the fella but if you don't know how to deal with Linux maybe you should practise first!8 -
I'm tempted at some point to get a non-dev job. After about 2 weeks I could automate everything then just slack off.5
-
I just love the Windows Developer Support... but unfortunately I don't have the possibility to use it (error when try to submit an incident). :D
Maybe it's a feature, not a bug...3 -
To be motivated enough after work (and not play games) to finally start developing some games and maybe release a game that someone enjoys....
This is going to take a while :/5 -
Factually incorrect is the same as spam right? Okay maybe not, but that's how I justify a down vote sometimes...2
-
I soo want to use Linux (maybe Arch) on my main desktop but I got some programs like FL Studio which only run on Windows.
A Windows VM feels so not snappy :(7 -
My weakest skill is simply organization. I can produce great work in a decent timeframe, just maybe not for the project or task I should be working on, assuming I don't get distracted by that email I was supposed to follow up on yesterday.2

FUCK YOU TECH LEAD! Our manager explained what he wanted 4 MONTHS AGO! You said we could do it! We can do it! You suddenly changed your mind, instead of asking me WHO IS WORKING ON THE PARTS REQUIRED TO DO THE MAGIC! MAYBE I WOULD KNOW IF IT IS POSSIBLE OR NOT??? MAYBE??? NOW I HAVE TO GO FIGHT YOU, YOUR EGO WILL SAY YOU ARE RIGHT, YOU WONT BACK DOWN, AND WE WILL SCREAM AT EACH OTHER! FUCK, RUINING MY 4 DAY WEEKEND RELAXATION! AND IN FRONT OF THE BOSS!!! FUCK

*Googling for articles that explain something I'm trying to research*
Oh! This one is highly rated, sounds good!
*It's all written in python*
Ugh that's not helpful, ok next one
*Written in python*
Ok... Ok... Third times a charm
*Next 128 articles are done in python*
Has anyone considered that maybe not everyone uses python?
At least try writing it in Javascript or C++, much easier to adapt code to other languages... Maybe I'm just bitter because I hate python ¯\_(ツ)_/¯10 -
I don't know what happens to me today.
As always, I've gone to work, but when I sit on front of computer, I felt unable to code.
Not afraid of coding, not exactly unmotivated. Just my head is not able to code.
It's strange, because until now always I'd felt so motivated with this project. But today I've spent 3h on front of computer and I've not been able to write a single line of code.
Maybe I need holidays and I didn't noticed.3 -
Got a deadline coming up and not in the mood to work. Like, brain is not cooperating at all. ☹️
... Maybe I'm just too stupid for this.6 -
Dear Teachers,
Please learn to make your PowerPoints in the aspect ratio you plan to present them in. I'm really not a fan of black borders.
Sincerely, Angry Student
Maybe I need to invent responsive PowerPoints...1 -
I can feel myself becoming more intolerant of people wasting my time and I'm in half a mind to do nothing about it.
Maybe they won't bother me if I'm not my perky self 🔪😱 -
Back in my study days software dev was this weird almost magical thing where you tell a electrocuted stone in a fantasy language what to do.
Now after working in the field for 4 years it has lost its shine and I mostly connect software dev to work grind and people who complain even though they just don’t read.
Maybe the time is near to look into a new field of work. Maybe it’s just not my kind of work to earn money. It’s not even like my higher ups are unsatisfied with my work. My current boss complimented my work a lot in our meeting last week.
Is this normal for developers to feel/experience?3 -
"It takes confidence to throw work away … When people first start drawing, they’re often reluctant to redo parts that aren’t right … they convince themselves that the drawing is not that bad, really — in fact, maybe they meant it to look that way." - Paul Graham

Im putting together a new stack (i do it every 8-10 months). Queue the dramatic music, its not java this time. So far i got Python Flask and maybe React but im not sure yet. Question is, what db should i use? Ill probably go for a json one, thinking about rethinkdb for now, but if anyone has a better idea, please share.16

If I'm not productive during the day, idk what you expect holding me 3h after work will do.
Maybe not keep your employees in perpetual crunch for 2 years, and then berate them for missing the deadlines that YOU SET! -
Seriously, does anyone really use TDD? It sound good in theory, but generally the devs are already used to implementation-first and are not willing/disciplined enough to change their mindset.
I think the biggest disadvantage of TDD is not taking into account how freaking lazy developers are in general.
Or maybe I just wasn't willing enough to make the change.
Thoughts?9 -
You know, thinking about how clients are absolutely unable to get their thoughts and requirements out in an understandable manner, maybe it's a not so abnormal to suck at expressing yourself
-
Made a dockerfile for a reproducible build environment today. It's been a few months since I had this much fun working, so refreshing.
This counts as devops right? In that case I might take a better look at devops sometime in the near future, I think I might like it. I just did it out of necessity (didn't want to bloat my system with build tools and sdks) but I ended up liking it. For some reason devops seems exceedingly boring to me, which prevented me from looking into it until now, let's see if I can overcome my laziness and learn it.4 -
Family... I respond with song title:
Boulevard of broken dreams.
Our paths don’t cross anymore. I don’t know why. I don’t want anything from them cause I know the consequences (maybe that’s why). I am not missing them and they’re not missing me so I think it’s a win win situation.1 -
Got in trouble yesterday for deploying to a QA environment and NOT sudo vimming a file to change the hardcoded email recipient... Maybe, the dev who wrote that file should use our configuration files instead of hardcoding it!
-
Followed the angular js tutorial until routing section. Then gave up.
It's not for me. Maybe I'll try again in a few weeks.5 -
Ranters in the US, do y'all want to try to organize a meetup? I'll be visiting the US in a while (hopefully, that is), so not anytime soon, but maybe we can at least form a group and discuss possible opportunities.14

After 2 interviews and a complex case study made to apply for Javascript Architect I was asked to travel from Brazil to Germany for final interview. First question:
Interviewer: what are things that you want to learn next.
Me (dumb): Maybe some functional language like Erlang
Interviewer: why not Javascript?
Me (dumber): Javascript is not that good for functional
Man, I WAS nervous that day 😭3 -
working as developer, actually android and java. Maybe not a big deal for you but it is, for me at least3

To you, who use Windows 11. Is there at least one feature that makes you glad you switched from 10 to 11? Or maybe not necessarily glad, but it would make you appreciate the new OS? One thing that would make the upgrade worth it... I myself can not think of a single fucking thing. (Please don't say better HDR support, that's the one most often mentioned feature. Definitely not good enough reason to have a new OS)11

Isn't the point of the 20++ receive stickers idea supposed to be an incentive for posting good content?
I've only joined recently and maybe I've missed the point, but I feel like surely people asking for it are just doing it for the stickers, they're not actually contributing to the content here?
Maybe I'm wrong but that's just the vibe I get?
On another note, screw logs (screw me more like). Spent 2 hours completely missing what the error message was trying to tell me and debugging in places I didn't even need to touch.3 -
At first I was like "meh.. SASS is not really that different from css really.. maybe this wont even help any.."
But now I'm like "dude holy shit please never let me work without SASS/SCSS again!" :D -

Today I realized that someone can roughly determine whether or not a laptop belongs to a coder just by observing the keyboard carefully.
Just look at this " { " lkey on your keyboard.
Even the most used language maybe.4 -

come on, it says "exp."
someone gotta write one!

Client complains constantly over image quality.
Then continues to upload diagrams as jpg not as png and then is bothered about compression artifacts...
It also doesnt help he works on a retina screen and we had to migrate his tiny thumbnail images from his old website.
Maybe I should buy a microscope... Or maybe send him the imagemagick documentation and he can choose the parameters to his liking? -
Maybe I've spent too much time around marketers or maybe it's just my OCD... but for the love of God people, when referencing the app we all use and love can we not at least use the proper case?
It's devRant. Not DevRant. 😑5 -
(Not sure if this is a rant.)
My mom got a Surface Pro a few days ago. I'm kinda happy because she'll be using more tech stuff. I mean, she used to do most of her work on her phone or on plain paper. Maybe she'll warm up towards using a laptop and maybe I can slowly introduce her to Linux. 🤔
Any suggestions for a Linux distro for a complete newbie?12 -
So Apple did make iTunes connect better but why the hell would they disable the tab button to move to next text box? I hope its just something wrong on my end or that would be a dumbass move -_-
On a side note, devRant need to have a category for Apple so it makes it easier for at least me to rant about them -_____-3 -
Release:
1. with all features
2. on time
3. on budget (budgeted resources)
Choose two. Maybe just one. If you try to do all, you may not get any.
Whenever I'm asked if something is possible, I've resorted to responding "With infinite time and resources, anything is possible"2 -
I'm stuck with a (very) junior developer.
He doesn't understand requirements, why we are doing this and not that.
Today, I asked for a merge request to implement filters on research.
Maybe in one or two weeks ...
Don't forget, everything gonna be alright. 🤲 Or maybe, will I kill him before?15 -
'we have a critical bug'
'Look, it's out of my hands, we would fix it but we do Agile, it needs to wait for grooming, planning, and then get in to the next sprint'
'how long will that take?'
'not long, 2 week maybe, 4 at most' -
Definitely the first time I saw real time data from a backend on a webapp. Something so magical about it actually working and me maybe not being a total dumbass.

Maybe you guys could help me...
My father just sent me a .xlsxm file (excel + macro file), it's all about horse races and stuff a 60+ years old dude would do :D
The file is pretty neat, but some minors changes needs to be done, but I have no clue where the code is. I found the "macro" part but it's empty, and I'm not surprised since the file itself seems to be generated from C# (Maybe not, I'm not the expert)
Sooo... Can anyone tell me how do I get to this code?8 -

I've always found it funny when sql errors "at or near" a character. I don't know enough about sql to understand why it does that (although I'm sure there a reason!)....but it just sounds like it's not trying hard enough 😂
Maybe someone smarter can explain?1 -
I've got tens of thousands of lines (maybe hundreds 🤷♂️) in open source bits and pieces. Much of it my own, but also other projects.
Not seen a penny, but never expected to. That's not why I do it.1 -
My road trip still lasts for another 5 hours and my laptop does not have power anymore 😧😧😧
I could refactor or comment so much code. Maybe add even more loggings and unit tests, but noooo 😔4 -
That moment when you are 50% ahead in the sprint and then the designer comes and says:
"I updated the design a bit"..
boom! an entire new website...
Ok maybe not that bad, but .... sometimes..... *sight* .... web designers :/ ... -
Maybe I'm not cut out to program. I have yet to write an entire program start to finish outside of tut sites and still have little idea as to what I'm doing.11

I'm not sure yet, but I'd like to go into a more humane side of development, maybe UX, but I'd also like to do research on the sociological impacts of softwares3

My company wanted to move old desktop applications to web and use angularJS. Finally, "new" tech. Not allowed to use node and Mongo because maybe someone who joins the Web team don't know Javascript and only sql experience ... Time to dust off my CV1

For me is the same Friday than Monday. I do not know if it is good or bad. Maybe it is good because I do not hate my job or bad because I do not make so much fun on weekends. 😗😗

Tips on getting promoted on work:
1. Collect a list of all improvements and achievements that u did during your time in that workplace
2. Compare your output with your colleagues output, check their MR's, their complexity and compare with yours.
3. Talk with your manager about a raise. Tell him about your achievements, like maybe you are working on a wider scope than others. Maybe you are mentoring junior devs. Or maybe you deal with a bigger workload than others but still deliver on time. Maybe your communication is good or maybe you document stuff very well and in that way you make your team more efficient and increase team output. Whatever. Pitch and sell yourself. Also provide some personal reasons why you need a raise, like maybe u have kids or maybe your rent doubled. Inflation and so on. Selling point is that u are a human not a greedy bastard.
At the end of that talk the manager most likely will say that he needs to speak higher ups, he needs to gather feedback from your colleagues and so on. Give him a week or two if possible, no more.
He will probably get back to you with an offer. If there is none start applying, get an offer and put in your notice. In my case I waited 3 months for my raise to go through. I put in my notice, had a stressed call from manager, showed him my offer and my raise was arranged the next day. -
Probably a cook or a chef, I like the kitchen and cooking in general.
Maybe owning a small barbacue joint somewhere not so remote, like a route stop near some touristic place.2 -
My company just released its website today. Previously, it just used its parent company's site.
Now, the problem is that it sucks big time. Awful design, pixelated stock photos, bad navigation, and broken grammar.
In the company's defence, it's not a web shop. It employs zero web devs. The site was built by an external company.
But if you are like me, you visit company websites before you apply for a job, and in this case, it would bed a big red flag.
Or maybe the hard-core embedded devs they are looking to employ wouldn't notice? Maybe they are all stuck in the year 2000 as well? I used to be a web developer so maybe my criteria are broken?3 -
Personally I like to use very obscene phrases as passwords, just in case some saves it in text.
When they read the "dump file" maybe they will be like well we will not be fucking with this one, that person is just sick.1 -
So I have been setting goals for my interaction with people on devrant. I had the goal of getting someone to spray liquid out of their mouth in response to something I posted. I believe I had one person self report on this (maybe two). My next goal was getting someone to shit their pants in response to a post. I figured with @b2plane here my chances were a lot higher. As of Nov, 2024 nobody has reported on this. That goal still stands.
Maybe some new goals for this next upcoming year should be:
1. get someone to rage quit (not sure this in a good goal)
2. get someone to "dad splain" to me
3. triggered downvotes (I have had some in the past, so this is a recurring goal)
4. inspire anti-posts (some of you are natural inspirers it seems, respect)
5. actually create funny memes (maybe not possible, shitposting will continue though)
Does anyone have ideas for some good edge lording goals?10 -
Creating an secure authentication system is not that easy...
Especially if you create it for a community full of devs.
But I think I've found a secure solution.
Maybe some security experts on here could review the code after I'm finished.
Here's the GitHub repo but the auth system is not up yet:

How to handle a manager who manages to find fault in everything you do ... Butt fails to acknowledge any of the good work
It's not like the feedbacks from his end are valuable , often times they are illogical and based on false assumptions
Is the behaviour from manager toxic ?
I end up getting uneasy everytime I hear a false superficial backhanded sarcastic remark on how and what I should have done differently
And when I really deliver something critical i don't even get an acknowledgement ... forget about compliment
Maybe I don't have a thick skin , maybe I'm taking the I'm a victim mentality here ... Maybe I should view everything with a more positive outlook ... but I really doubt if I'm at fault here
And I'm not sure if he's like this with other guys , but I suspect I'm the only one who's being treated like this ..
Should I "escalate" this to someone?2 -
Very tired lately, also not very hungry ... And when I am hungry the food just doesn't taste like it used to 🤔 anyone had something lik this and maybe some tips on how to battle this?!7

Problem: Our three tools are not tracking what we're working on / done.
Solution: Need a fourth tool, or maybe just more moving back and forth between the three tools.
Expectation: We'll be more efficient.3 -
Working two hours on this FFS. Three the same laptops:
- Two USB sticks of different brands working on two of the laptops. One doesn't work.
- BIOS versions: the working two are from 2018 and 2020. The not working one is from 2022.
- BIOS settings: 99% the same, especially where matters. Literally went trough every menu.
- I thought, maybe the 'new' 2022 BIOS has a buggy - so maybe update BIOS? Everything only for windows on Lenovo website.
I installed xubuntu on it before. All laptops say "cant find /boot" but on two of them it's not a problem and they run the live USB stick with option to installii. Since I installed it before, the BIOS version is probably not the issue.
If i close my eyes i see swastika's.
Detail: the not working laptop is the one that i wrote the xubuntu iso to /dev/sda (what was the hard drive, see a few rants ago). For some reason, it aggresively boots from that one. I do see my USB stick working (very busy flashing light). Is it maybe possible that it mounts my HD as installation cdrom? The HD contains those files.
Anyone tips?2 -
Feature request: I would like to see older devs represented in the avatar choices. Not sure yet how that could be portrayed. I’ll leave that up to designers. Maybe just a little grey on the sides of the heads for hair color?3

In the 21st Century the problem is not to allow the use of Chemical & Biological Weapons & 'maybe' just 'maybe' achieve total nuclear disarmament (not in the next 120 years) It's not just the responsibility of the UK, USA, & France but that of every country that's a signatory of the conventions that banned the use of such weapons to intercept and retaliate against members that use such kind of weapons. From Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, Brazil, China, India , Afghanistan, Butan, Taiwan, Iceland should use heavy force to stop the use of such weapons.1

Borrowing a JavaScript book from the school library and realizing that it was published years ago and is very outdated because it always refers to the compatibility with Internet Explorer. I'm not sure if I should continue because after all, it's the basics. Maybe it's worth returning already... or maybe not because I don't always have access to the internet, but a book is easily accesible with or without internet.3

Microsoft bought Github so what ? It's not like github is the most important tool out there. If they break it we'll just move on to something else no problem just chill people. Give them the benefit of doubt maybe they'll make it even better.2

I've discovered the best time for me to write blogs!
6am... Now back to sleep 😪
Hmm... Not really dev related (but the post I will was...) Maybe I should also start using Twitter... But then I need to find followers.... -
Two questions about devRant itself:
- Is the overlapping element on purpose (anti normie filter maybe) ? Of course not, but am I the only one having it, knowing I have it since day one ?
- Is there no option to change password, or I'm just blind ?7 -
People posting their (not so good) workstation. Post it if you code on 3 widescreens, 9 monitors, a gaming rig or if your debug duck is a ducking (pun (maybe)) dragon.

A recruiter contacted me asking my curriculum (sent), then he sent me some emails before calling me. After some minutes, he said I was not good for the position. But that thing was written on the first line of my cv. Maybe he is not good to read.

I'm looking for a hobby project during winter as I can not drive my motorbike during that time. Anyone has a good idea?
Maybe I could start with my old business plan idea, but I would for sure need people to help me.6 -
Any one here have a degree in Electrical Engineering or Electronics Engineering? I'm thinking about going back to school, but I'm not sure it's worth the money since I live in the US. (cries in over-expensive education costs)
I do a lot infrastructure work and some super basic programming/scripting but I think I really want to get into hardware maybe zone in on either RF or take a stab at amps/effects pedals for guitar and bass.
as an aside, I'm not trying to go back to school for job or career related reasons, I just want to noodle with stuff and maybe create my own circuitry for stuff.15 -
Okay, my initial revulsion for ABI has receded. All things considered, my options aren't that bad. I just had to change my perspective from "huge downgrade from static linkage" to "huge upgrade from a message channel".
Just like a web API, I have to draw a continuous line through the program that separates specific concerns of interest that must fall on one side or another, and which can only cross through things with specific properties.
There are several crates shipping a number of different binary-compatible types, even generic types. Not everything can cross, sure, but maybe not everything should cross either. Maybe a DLL should receive an opaque handle for certain things, such as interpreter internal code representations. Maybe having these separated is important enough to justify having a translation layer.
I'm sure there's much woe ahead, but I'm learning to stop worrying and love the ABI. -
Maybe I shouldn't code today... or get more sleep.
Every single bug I had today was due to referencing the wrong variables... and not including 'this.'
How do you guard against creating variables with the same names in method and class scope?2 -
You know what feature about macOS I just don't get? Notification center. I don't know what it is about it, but it just seems kinda out of place. Maybe because an app's notifications aren't cleared when it's opened? It's just not a feature I use.2

So I’ve asked my Unis infrastructure guys via mail, why we don’t use the digital id with our phone additional to our RFID Badge.
One of those (maybe a moron, I don’t judge yet, see question below) replies, that they would need to replace all readers “as current ones rely on RFID scanning chips” and they are not sure how US Unis implemented it.
Thing is, that when I hold my iPhone SE 2020 next to the reader, my phone shows my credit card to use for Apple Pay.
Doesn’t that mean, that they use compatible RFID frequencies ?
I’m not an iOS dev, so maybe someone can help me out. Any info appreciated!11 -
Does anybody else feel a little sad when reading rants or negative comments concerning frameworks you've used a lot or maybe even more in case you're still using them?
In my particular case I just read some comments tackling Angular - and I do not want to say, that those comments aren't justified. We're currently living in a more than ever fast-paced front end framework world and Angular is simply not state of the art anymore.
So I do not want to start a "what's the best framework" discussion here, that's not my intention.
This is more about the feeling you get when you've built a lot of stuff using a framework, maybe you have still projects running on this framework or even contributed.
Either you do not have the time to switch to another framework yet or you're even still somehow satisfied with the way they're working.
However - reading all this negative stuff about such a framework is sometimes not that easy.
..or am I just some kind of strange, sentimental developer guy? ;D10 -
Not a big fan of iPhone’s touch points. They don’t feel intuitive at all to me. Maybe it’s my 8 years of Android experience talking.1

I'm starting to think that Fedora is not a convenient OS for Android development, it just randomly freezes. I might try Pop!OS.
Or maybe it's because of Android Studio...2 -
This moment, when you start writing code, then don't stop, to not lose the motivation. And after finish think about debugging 😂 Well, that just works on easy things maybe

8 hours ... maybe?!?! I agree with previous ranter who says we CANNOT work more than 2 hours straight without some sort of break.

Just started a side project, helping a friend make his Android app more stable and add a couple more features. We'll release the sources sometime later.
Gotta say, his code is just terrible. And it runs on top of some code written by someone else, and that's even worse.
But I don't know how I got the motivation to spend the whole Saturday cleaning it up, fixing warnings, making abstractions, extracting features to separate classes, converting some stuff to Kotlin, even adding a couple coroutines. It felt good fixing bad code.
Maybe because I have some coding freedom I kinda miss at work.
Maybe because the project is not that big.
Maybe because I know the guy has many skills, coding is just not one of them.
Maybe because that project has some cool in it I can't even describe.
Maybe because that's entirely within my skills but challenging enough to have fun working on it.
Or maybe is just the mood of the moment, and in a week or so I'll lose all the motivation, as it happened too many times.

Currently deciding between:
French
Indian
Chinese (not Korean, maybe Japanese?)
Opinions? :)8 -

What's the most paralelized end user application you came across? I mean not that obvious things like gimp or photoshop, maybe things you experienced are just more speedy because they actually use the 8 to 16 threads of a modern CPU in full?1

So, i've always loved programming for as long as i can remember. But lately while sitting here working with it i havn't had the motivation or drive to program. I'm currently at an internship because the school i go to requires it, and ill be done in about 2 months (been here 3 months already), and im really not feeling it anymore.
Maybe it's because it's ASP.NET core 2, or becaue im not getting paid.
Is this because it's an internship? Will i have a better drive for programming when i actually get paid for it? Or do i just need to suck it up and maybe spend more time programming at home?1 -
Gah, I just received this Ubuntu 18.04 VM with 8 cores and 8 gigs of ram, and since it'll be a production server both serving public and "private" networks (yes, shout at me, but projects won't be about hosting sensitive information, I wouldn't put all that on one server), and I'm struggling between my options.
Docker, or not docker?
The server's main use is to host our growing blog and install Varnish, which will hog some ram after a while. I use Laradock for my dev projets, it's really easy to develop with it, but I am unsure if it fits a production environment with performance, security and traffic load in mind :(
I read Docker has stability issues (in 2016-2017), and can bring the machine down with it, I don't know if I should just install the software (nginx, apache, percona/mysql/maria) without "containerizing" it and go for it
I'm lost xD7 -
Someone was pointing out that we aren't ranting on this platform anymore, it's only shit posting and making fun of people.
I think it goes a little deeper than that. Maybe we have just given up? Maybe we have accepted that it's not getting any better than how it is already, it can only go downhill.
Just like in a relationship, you fight with your SO when you hope that there is room for improvement, but when you stop, you know the relationship's dead.
Maybe we have accepted the fact that, it is what it is. No use in ranting anymore.13 -

I swear to god I'm going to break one of these people's heads with a brick. maybe not this time but one of these times.
-
A minor bug, which might already been reported but if not then here it is
The notification panel keeps showing the number of notifs haven't checked yet even after opening that rant from other comment or +1. Also maybe it should be returned to zero after checking the panel1 -
Maybe the reason there's not enough hours in the days is because we came from a world where the days were longer?2

Any recommended KVM application?
I have tried Barrier on my two Cinnamon and not successful. Maybe I should just buy Synergy. 😐1 -
Bloody ISO7816/EMVco contact is a huge pile of exceptions to the rules.
I'm still not sure if there are any rules at all. Maybe it's just exceptions.
I will become the famous violent psychopath if I get to know where those guys live that invented such crap. -
what do you guys think of rating your skills in cv as a graph?
like sql - 7.5 etc...?
i've just tried it and sent my resume to a couple employers but i'm not getting the usual response (more activity).
i also did a very honest review of my skills (according to 3 senior colleagues), so maybe the scores seem too low? how would you react if you saw someone with rather low scores? i'm asking this because developers and mortals probably view these scores very differently. Maybe some suggestions?4 -
I hate debugging code when I'm reasonably sure the bug didn't come from me. so demotivating. also when it has to do with the data and I don't have easy access to the data to debug what went wrong. I was just expecting it to work!2

All these rubber ducks and here I dont feel like I need one when who ever I allow socialise with me, will do just fine. Maybe I have yet to experiance the joy of one and not its social status in the community :( i feel so out right now

I thought I might give bootstrap a chance by recreating an existing website. Problem is that this website is "simpler" with a carousel and a dark mode toggle being the few more complicated features, so it might be even faster to simply write the CSS myself and get my hands dirty. Using bootstrap for this seems more and more overkill, the more I look at it. On the other hand I know bootstrap already takes much care of responsiveness and vendor-prefixes and so on. What have I gotten myself into with bootstrap...21

I realized today the I can actually edit my profile on Indeed Prime so did not have to accept the screwed up profile created by a **professional writer** many months ago...
Maybe now I might attract more interest...
But now after spending 30 minutes on this just realized maybe too late.... FCK... so I wasted all morning when I could've been sleeping.... :(2 -
I got a CheatHappens Lifetime account which I don't need anymore.
I'm not sure how this is gonna work cuz devRant doesn't have PM... but maybe will figure something out..
First that replies saying they want it, gets it.1 -
I have come to the conclusion that I'm dumb as fuck.
I have been stuck on this trivial problem for 1 HOUR AND 46 MINUTES...
https://leetcode.com/problems/...
maybe, hopefully, just because i'm trying to do it in a "clever" way, maybe if i just did it the dumbest, most inefficient way i can think of, it would take me "only" like 15 minutes, but at this point i'm not so sure... :(37 -
Dear .Net developers.
I wrote this tonight:
https://github.com/Future-Forward-S...
Please let me know if I am extremely clever, or extremely stupid.
P.s. I know it's not exactly ports and adapters. Rename needed maybe.4 -
Is going around different european countries with a tourist visa to find a job a good or dumb idea?
I heard in Germany companies place job offers in mail posts so maybe it's not so dumb....?5 -
My experience with Visual Studio Code hasn't been nice and I'm honestly kind of not liking it at this point in time :-(
Maybe it's just me who's being a dump-kop1 -
Not sure how to ask this. I really enjoy Network side of IT. Maybe even throw in a little Cyber Security as well. I feel like I'm trying to every too fast. I got no certifications yet. This is stressful 😫1

As a not-freelancer, whats the amount of companies you worked for?
This was #4 and im beginning to doubt myself. Maybe i should do start some other career or something.2 -
The biggest joke maybe is that studying Software Engineering will not make you a Software Engineer. You will learn 100s of other things but developing software. Welcome to the 100-year-old curriculum.14

Trying to figure out why switching underlying object in data binding does not update.
checking type validation, nothing
checking types in bound events, nothing,
maybe some exceptions it thrown? nothing...
check the "class"... IT'S A FUCKING STRUCT -
whenever I see the word TypeScript I actually read JavaScript. Cuz it's really JavaScript in disguise. Its type system is JavaScript worthy, maybe... Probably not

viscoders raging in 1, 2, 3..4 -
looking to learn a new language. I'm looking for something that can run on mobile platforms, c# maybe for cross platform capability ? not sure , any suggestions ?7

Well, the time has finally come to tackle Typescript! So far it's not too rough-so I think I might put some effort into levelling up my redux skills too so I can put them together...maybe!1

Nobody ever tells me i’m not good enough. They always say: Maybe you should talk to X, or maybe you should ask Y. Well both of X and Y are either too busy, not in the office at all and ofcourse just as incompetent as myself, so they give a short excuse instead of being helping in a pro active way.
Also 3D transform has it’s limitations and can’t actually twist a 2D form in a “organic way”. Now i’ll focus on things that do matter like the header thats decided to change colour on a smaller screen. -
Does anyone have a link to the first ever rant on devRant (maybe not first but first after it went live)3
-
suggestion?
Maybe we can have some sort of weekly rantcast podcast (maybe with @dfox hosting it or something through Google Hangouts) where we talk about certain topics and let a group of ranters take the word or something. Not sure if anyone would be interested or would listen to it but it sounded like a good idea to me (it would also grant the ability for people who don't live in NYC or in the US to kind of meet other ranters more personally and stuff like that)
Thoughts on this?3 -
My vServer setted Up recently is working.. nearly.. git isn't working.. cant Push to the server.. permission denied, Can not read.. Shit! Any suggestions?
I can login to my Server with my Public Key, but for some reason not with git. Maybe I will Dream from a Solution. Good night ;)6 -
Not quite, maybe almost good?
But I am still trying to get good.
I still read the documentation and guides when I write a program. especially when trying to use a library code within my program. -
I'm in the constant fear of developing an app, going live (maybe having users using it constantly) then having a breaking bug and not being able to figure out what's going on nor fix it.
-
Is it possible to subscribe to people from the browser version of devRant? On iOS it's obvious... maybe it's one of those 'right in front of me' things and I'm not seeing it... any clues?1
-
Not a rant but how can I go about maybe getting a tutor or a mentor to help me with my java efforts. I'm self taught and I've been at it for about 4 months.1
-
Not sure why people love mechanical keyboards so much? Maybe they aren't old enough to remember the first time they were cool!
The world has moved on! :)1 -
Just curious, if you company had 3 system outages due to architecture with over 5 days of intermittence + a bunch of smaller downtimes ONLY in 2021 would they promote the guy in charge?
Because maybe I’m the weird one and not the company itself.3 -
Hello everyone,
I wanted to ask for advice about hosting providers. Specifically looking for vps servers.
I'm currently using OVH, but I got some recommendations that would give me a lot more for the price.
The recommendations I got were Contabo, Hetzner and Netcup
Maybe some of you have experience with those Providers and can recommend one, or maybe even some not on that list.
Thanks for taking your time to read6 -
Good company refuced my contracting service. Fuck that. And reasons do not sound good to tell - like team did not want me anymore, maybe too dificult project, I am not independent enough, too many fixes after code reviews. This sucks that I do not know how to fix those parts, I have tried. And about too dificult project - how can I do better on dificult projects, I am not sure. There are projects of similar dificulty in most companies. And if projects would be easy, then everyone does that and reward would be small.18

if I say that I just started uploading vids on yt ,
would ya'll be interested to give constructive criticism and maybe give video suggestions ?
P.S : I am thinking to keep track of my journey ( i am not sure how to draw my journey in a video )2 -
maybe i shouldn't post on here anymore and you people will absorb this stay in the past and I can maybe keep living ?
I hate that their idea of a fair tradeoff is this shitty shit.
not gonna make the other comments.10 -
I wonder if we will have a sprint review meeting for 2016. You know to prevent the shit storm that happened to continue ...

im having mixed feelings about these drugs. as if its a placebo effect. im not feeling any big changes. or maybe im so deep into drugs ion even notice its effects7 -
The the frontend for mesos' chronos is soooo incredibly slow. With its rest-api looking for job names and starting jobs manually is feasible, but gosh, somebody committed a crime there. (Maybe one is also not supposed to have about 500 jobs in there but that's another issue.)
-
Just got of a call with a recruiter... Got mixed feelings about it. I may advance to the round or maybe not. I will hear it in the next few days.

WOAH MOMENT
Just realized 3 most important symbols in web development, maybe programming in general.
1. / the root
2. ; semi colon your old nemesis
3. ~ where you live
You should not be here if you don't understand, just kidding but seriously they are very important. -
To all ranters with stickers.
Did you get some confirmation for your stickers. I sent a mail months ago. Maybe some delay because I am not in the US3 -
Hey, guys! I want to write some software article, also I have a topic. But I do not know how to start. Maybe you can give some templates or good advice?
