(overheard parents talking)
Mum: I'm worried about our son, I guess he was hacking today
Dad: What? [Chuckle] No. He's not that grown up enough. Prolly programming.
Mum: But, the screen was all blue and there was nothing but text on it. And then suddenly it went blank. So, I asked him what he was doing and he said it was a BSOD. That sounds scary NSA level stuff.
Dad: it isn't [came out of the room, saw me there]

I overheard this on my way back to home.
Girl 1: I bought a new phone yesterday.
Girl 2: Let me see it.

Girl 2: There is no Instagram?
Girl 1: No, Instagram wasn't installed when I bought the phone.
Girl 2: That's weird.

Omfg this fucking guy!!!!
Context:
We are going through a major refactor of some of our backend components. I was tasked with cleaning up our ML code while another guy was tasked with cleaning up the general CRUD side of the backend, let's call him DA for "dumb ass".
** At 11pm
DA: I am getting a strange error from your backend. Look:
"Invalid call: method=PUT expected=[POST]"
Me: you need to send a post request not a put request
DM: no, it's not that. I am sending the right thing
Me: ... Let me see...
* 15min ish of testing *
No, it works fine on my version, 1.1.0 what's your version?
DM: I'm on 1.1.0.
Me: send me code?
DM: *send
"request.put(..."
Me: you are sending a PUT... It's literally in the screenshot. Send a Post
DM: I am
Me: no, send a Post
DM: I don't understand, I am sending the request
Me: it's a post not a put
DM: but...
Me: it's a post not a put
Me: good night!!!!!!12 -
Today, I finally had the opportunity to say to a client: "It is not a bug, it is a feature".
No, seriously, it is a feature.2 -
Sitting outside, in the park, sunny, warm, music, writing a new blog post for the security/privacy blog.
I actually love this 😊15 -
I actually just wanted to say - what a great time it is to be a developer.
C# has stolen so many good features now that it's pretty awesome.
JavaScript and typescript are really fun to work with.
I really love angular.
Docker is great!
I can setup pipelines and deploy an angular app for free and really easily with github-pages.
I can use linux inside windows.
I can use cloud providers to do all sorts for really cheap.
I can plug my cable-free oculus quest VR headset into my laptop and build a game pretty easily with unity (thanks to all the great oculus helper prefabs).
I can use tesseract and data science technology inside my browser!!
And I can go to medium and udemy and learn all sorts of things.
Honestly...
Just saying.
I'm actually really loving being a developer right now.
And if I do have off day, I can rant on here!24 -

About two years ago I get roped into a something when someone was requesting an $8000 laptop to run an "program" that they wrote in Excel to pull data from our mainframe.
In reality they are using our normal application that interacts with the mainframe and screen scrapping it to populate several Excel spreadsheets.
So this guy kept saying that he needed the expensive laptop because he needed the extra RAM and processing power for his application. At the time we only supported 32 bit Windows 7 so even though I told him ten times that the OS wouldn't recognize more than 3.5 GB of RAM he kept saying that increasing the RAM would fix his problem. I also explained that even if we installed the 64 bit OS we didn't have approval for the 64 bit applications.
So we looked at the code and we found that rather than reusing the same workbook he was opening a new instance of a workbook during each iteration of his loop and then not closing or disposing of them. So he was running out of memory due to never disposing of anything.
Even better than all of that, he wanted a faster processor to speed up the processing, but he had about 5 seconds of thread sleeps in each loop so that the place he was screen scrapping from would have time to load. So it wouldn't matter how fast the processor was, in the end there were sleeps and waits in there hard coded to slow down the app. And the guy didn't understand that a faster processor wouldn't have made a difference.
The worst thing is a "dev" that thinks they know what they are doing but they don't have a clue.7 -
My application closes, but with an error, but it technically still closed. Soooo, no problem, right?5

There are people in my workplace who ask "why did you set your IDE to dark theme?". How do I convince them that turning off the lights above my cubicle, lowering the screen brightness and having a dark theme is the best thing ever to concentrate?

After several months on the job hunt with some discouraging rejections, I finally got an offer! Thank you all for inspiring me to keep learning and to stay humble. I've been stuck in a role where I feel overworked and unappreciated, with no room to grow. Excited for this next challenge and new beginnings! 😊4

WHY THE FUCK DOES IT HAVE TO END?
WHY THE FUCK DOES ANYTHING HAVE TO EVER END?
When I left my previous employer, I was so connected to people there. In fact my entire direct team was just few months old.
I ended up crying like a baby on my farewell call in front of everyone. I just couldn't stop.
Definitely not the brightest or smartest people, but surely great at heart. I did hate them at times and we had our ups and downs but they made the place tolerable.
The work culture is created by colleagues at any organisation and not the leadership/management. And work culture was one of the major reasons why I stayed back for 7.25 years even when a rat was earning more than me.
I joined new organisation with a big smile on my face that, I will learn and earn more. And as I was buckling up, my lead quit.
She was one of the smartest person I met. She inspired me so fucking much. Our entire team is geographically located in multiple time zones. Still she never hesitated to jump on calls as early as 07:00 AM or as late as 12:00 AM. Yet she pinged me every time on Slack to check on me and made sure I was doing well. Kept pushing me to get enough sleep, take care and not burnout myself. Always handling her daughter while on calls with us without impacting the discussions.
She taught me like her own child. So patient with a retard like me. Gave me good feedback and insights on how can I grow as a person and what all to look for in the organisation.
She bids her final goodbye early next week and with every meeting we have, I get more emotional. Doesn't feel like we are in different continents but just in same room, talking like we have known each other for years.
And you know what, after joining this org, I came to know that they hired me for a level below what I was in previous org (because how the job titles were structured here and I don't really care for titles). The product I am working on is highly ambitious and everyone is keen to make it live.
And now everything falls on me. Kickass opportunity to get a promotion, relocation, good hike, and all that I desire. And my employer is known to be quite employee friendly to actually fullfil all my wishes.
But that's not what I want. I want my people with me. It would have been so fucking awesome if she wouldn't have quit and together we would have built the product and have had so much fun doing so.
I am sure, the reason of my death will be empathy. I am next to tears while I type this.
I suck at goodbyes. Even though, with the help of technology, people are and will be connected, but still goodbyes are the shittiest things to ever exist.11 -

So the water dispenser in the kitchen does not have sparkling water, which I love. But there's one in the meeting room down the corridor that has sparkling water!
Like any regular employee of course I filed a request with site manager to upgrate the kitchen dispenser... NOT!

I would like to invite you all to test the project that a friend and me has been working on for a few months.
We aim to offer a fair, cheap and trusty alternative to proprietary services that perform data mining and sells information about you to other companies/entities.
Our goal is that users can (if they want) remain anonymous against us - because we are not interested in knowing who you are and what you do, like or want.
We also aim to offer a unique payment system that is fair, good and guarantees your intergrity by offer the ability to pay for the previous month not for the next month, by doing that you do not have to pay for a service that you does not really like.
Please note that this is still Free Beta, and we need your valuable experience about the service and how we can improve it. We have no ETA when we will launch the full service, but with your help we can make that process faster.
With this service, we do want to offer the following for now:
Nextcloud with 50 GB storage, yes you can mount it as a drive in Linux :)
Calendar
Email Client that you can connect to your email service (
SearX Instance
Talk ( voice and video chat )
Mirror for various linux distros
We are using free software for our environment - KVM + CEPH on our own hardware in our own facility. That means that we have complete control over the hosting and combined with one of the best ISP in the world - Bahnhof - we believe that we can offer something unique and/or be a compliment to your current services if you want to have more control over your data.

Everyone is posting jokes about GitLab recent incident and how the guys responsible for that must be feeling right now.
Shit happens, sometimes it's you accidentally deleting a branch on your repo and turning that into a major crisis, sometimes is a huge mistake that impacts not only the whole company business, but also it's clients work.
This situation reminds me of a famous quote from Thomas J. Watson (ex lBM CEO):
"Recently, I was asked if I was going to fire an employee who made a mistake that cost the company $600,000. No, I replied, I just spent $600,000 training him. Why would I want somebody to hire his experience"
Those guys at GitLab have probably learned one of the most expensive lessons in IT world and I really wish them to come up with a solution that not only fixes this case, but that helps them preventing future occurrences.6 -

Yesterday I got a pretty straight-forward task of fixing SASS linting errors from our project. I thought, "How many errors could there be?" Turns out there were just around 2000 errors across 109 files!
I was almost like, "Man, this is going to take a lot of my time!"
So, I started fixing the errors one-by-one with my headphones on and switching music genres after every 2 hours.
After almost 6 hours of continuous bug-fixing, my mind kind of became repellant to the possibility of the outer world and my fingers automatically fell on the right keys in almost no time. My brain was functioning like a computer itself.
And after the end of 7 hours, I reduced the number to less than 1000 errors.
Today, I continued the task and found out that there were some scoping errors I made yesterday (web developers would know this pain of '&').
And after working for almost 6 hours today, I got the number down to 500.
Not a rant, but I felt extremely content with what I did today.
I guess every day is not just about programming, sometimes, it's also about making your code better.
Thanks for reading! :)6 -

!!vodka!
!batch files. because they're stupid.
Preface: I may be drunk. If not, I'll keep trying ~
Update: no, i'm already kinda wasted.
I told @AlexDeLarge that I would try Reyka today and let him know how it is. So, let's have at it!
At the recommendation of a friend, I tried Deep Eddy (vodka) a few weeks ago. It's extremely smooth and very good. Totally recommend. I can drink it straight, or with a tiny bit of water.
The same friend also recommended Reyka, which I bought earlier today (among quite a few other things, because alcohol). Here's what I discovered:
With Reyka, I was expecting something extremely smooth and almost tasteless, but tasteless it is not. Reyka tastes halfway between vodka and a good gin, like Bombay Sapphire. It actually has a *lot* of flavor, but the vodka itself is actually pretty high quality. I haven't found anything to mix with it yet, and I don't really like it straight. I might try lemon or lemonade next.
If I was to recommend vodkas, it would be either Tito's, or Deep Eddy. (Reyka is kind of strange, so I don't know if I can recommend it yet.)
Tito's is smooth and tasty -- absolutely not a gross vodka flavor, but ... nice. All alcohols have different effects and make me feel different. Grey Goose makes me tired, Tito's makes me happy.
Deep Eddy is incredibly smooth, and has almost no taste at all. It's wonderful.

I'm really happy today. I'm not sure why, my life is in ruins on many levels, but at work I'm having fun and getting a lot more responsibility now. I even get to lead a meeting on Monday and be part of the management of a project which means I'll have people reporting to me. I suspect it's a sneaky way to get me more invested in the company so I'll want to stay after my studies but I enjoy it regardless. I finally have enough I need to keep track of to warrant carrying a notebook around and it makes me really happy 😂Hope you're all having a great day too!1

I switched my job about 2 months ago. This was my first switch after college (in 7 years). I was at a senior position and was not learning anything new for few months and got really bored.
I had asked for a 100% hike in new company, they gave me over 150%. Apart from this, they offer free food and snacks (or reimburse if you order your food from outside). Unlimited leaves and work from home option. No fixed working hours (I see people working for only 5-6 hours some days). No sign of politics yet. People are very humble and help you out even on silly queries. Company is growing at a very fast pace, it was named in fastest x growing companies about a month ago in some report with growth rate of about 1000%.
I see people around me with so less experience than me but so much knowledge. Feels like I am fresher again and learning so much from them. FYI, I had worked in same field (tech) for initial 3 years of my career. Looking at seniors I am finally able to set goals.

I finally fucking did it!
I strapped up, strapped in, strapped on... uh wait what?
I finally made the full dedicated switch to linux on my personal computer. Blew away Windows and installed linux. I was able to get about 95% of the games that I actually play on PC to run under a combo of proton/lutris-wine.
I feel like after working in a (primarily) linux shop for almost 2 years now, I've learned enough to be able to actually troubleshoot if/when something goes wonky. I've been a windows/sysadmin type in my career for about 8 years and only touched small bits of linux here and there or for fun little projects like a retropie setup.
But thanks to this gig I'm working at now, as a devops engineer, I've learned so got'damn much about linux and I've been developing scripts/tools that run on linux I figured I could, or better yet 'should', take the full plunge.
So, I've decided that if there's something I absolutely need on Windows that Linux doesn't support, instead of knee-jerking and going back to Windows, I'm going to just setup a VM of windows and daily drive Linux from now on.
Some gfx tweaks for games were definitely necessary, it's still not quite as plug and play as Windows for games, but the fact that it only took like 1.5 hours to sort out all of my games performance is really impressive. Especially, considering none of these games actually supports linux out of the box and Wine/Proton is being used to get them to work.9 -
Just used my first "It's not a bug, it's a feature" explanation 😂. However, the irritating part is, I had to explain it to another person from IT industry (I mean testers) who is from another company.

I'm thirteen, and we have an excel unit in our computer class. When she's want to teach us something, she'd deploy her screen on ours and we couldn't do anything. It took me until the third time (yes, that long) to remember the connection was wired via Ethernet. I took the cord out and my computer was free! During the boring "lesson," I opened Code::Blocks to work on a fun side project. When she notice she wasn't connecting to my computer, she walked over to my chair and saw Code::Blocks on my screen. Then, I noticed her behind me. I quickly pressed ALT+TAB. She walked back to her chair. To this day I swear she thinks Im a hacker.11

Am I the only one who doesn't understand apple card? Like really, it's just the worst pitch ever!
"Apple card. Made by apple. Not a bank" that's a REAL ad I saw today. Why would you trust APPLE more than an FDIC insured bank with decades or (in some select cases) CENTURIES of experience in finance?
"No more card numbers and CVV"
Cool. I get it. Card numbers get leaked and stolen. But that's why banks insure cards and reverse fradulant transactions. How an I'm supposed to use it on Amazon?! I'm sure they have an answer. Like maybe one time use generated cards. But they haven't advertised it yet, and that's a problem!
Why do they think people want this!? And even more so, because I've seen some people are excited: WHY DO PEOPLE WANT THIS?! why is apple trying to make everything?!15 -

Reminded me of the time my mgr pushed me to make an android app despite me having no prior exp then getting snippy when the end results weren't up to it...
A game designer wanted to commission some conceptual artwork about monsters.
He asked the freelance artist to make him something kinda unique but not too far off, something like a mix between a centaur and a minotaur
The artist unfamiliar with that kinda work asked for more details, the designer said ah just mix em together , its easy, half bull half man and the other half man half horse (already incorrect) and he sent the man off to work.
A couple days later the artist is back...
Here its done, had to look up the monsters online but here ya go....
game designer : wtf is is ?!😡
Arist: half centaur half mino... whats wrong?! 😒
Designer: yeah but you got the wrong halves you dimwit!
you gave me a half "man-half-another-man" creature 😡

Im curious to know what people's opinions on tech Internships are?
Some people have the option that it's cheap labour to get basic things done.
I believe they are wrong. I just finished my 11 month long internship at a medium size tech company in Melbourne Australia
Although finishing up there was a sad story in itself I was taking some time to reflect on those past months and I believe it's truly amazing.
I've discovered my passions and interests. I was mentored by some truly caring people that honestly gave a shit about me.
The code I write is so much cleaner, decisions I make are more informed and I could go on!
Most of all they paid me decent and I really cannot ask for more.
Kudos to all those companies that actually care about the emerging dev community.2 -

Not every goddamn thing is a bug from X or a bug from Y most of the time I, Us, We as programmers fucking make mistakes or don't know the issue because it's vague!!! IT'S NOT A FUCKING BUG!!!2 -

Another small story about my "teacher".
Today we got told again that we need to develop a personal programming style. I asked him how we were supposed to do that while being restricted by his demands. He tried to justify this with bullshit about how to not declare variables. As i told him that wasn't my point at all he stuttered and couldn't say anything. I got officially allowed to use everything i want! VICTORY SCREECH
(But restricting students on which commands they are allowed to use is still bullshit imho)5 -
Just to be clear - this is not a rant!
Seeing as I have a useless domain, as far as public access is concerned,m, I’ve thrown up a design to make use of it.
This is a feedback session, so I’m really just looking for any takers who want to give any advice, ideas, ect on this.

why, oh God, why do you have a scene in SE01 E17 at 9:20 min into the episode, where
J.Gordon uses reading glasses to a screen of an old B/W TV and magically is able to read a logo brand of a jacket.
How did the glasses add hundreds of more pixels to the resolution behind them.
This has ruined it for me, not watching now. Even Mission Impossible where they say "use DDOS to take over their systems" is better than this.7 -
what a great idea to do server upgrades on a friday evening...and i can do it alone...and am responsible that everything works as expected...what a great day today...and i hate every single second of this day yet.. :-/
damnit i'm a developer, not a sysadmin, just because i can do it doesnt mean that i'm supposed to do it..what about our admins? what get they paid for? rebooting the coffeemachine? fuckers already left the building1 -
Not a rant, in contrary.
When you post a suggestion on reactjs github and it is approved almost immediately.
You need to appreciate the small things.3 -
Finally had the time to implement that feature I wanted all the time. Testing now and everything works just fine again. Very suspicious.

How do you guys format data like this? Using js framework? Or pure HTML tags?
html labels? invisible table?

Unless you're editing actual fucking JSON and not a JS object, do this:
{
name: 'John Doe',
phone_number: '12345',
}
Not this:
{
name: 'John Doe',
phone_number: '12345'
}
Note the presence or lack of a comma after the last field. In this way, when you add a new field, you only have one line change in version control, because otherwise you'd have to add that no-longer-last comma and thus make two line changes. Not to mention you can forget to add it and spend some time figuring out what is wrong.30 -
If you are selling something for a charitiy: Implement a "round up" button! Let's say someone buys something for 19$, add the possibility to round up the amount to 20$. Surprisingly a lot of people make use of it :-)2

When I came home just now after a long day and opened my mailbox, I was instantly made a little bit happier than before.
Thank you @dfox and @trogus for creating this opportunity for devs to rant about little and big incidents and to seek advice and amusement. (And for the stickers, of course. :D)
Thank you all for being the awesome community you are.
(Two of the stickers were immediately stuck to one of my boxes and fit in quite well.
Edit: Also: sorry for potato, it's evening in Germany.)13 -

Possibly the start of a very bad adventure: I'm helping my brother-in-law set up a website for a business he'd beginning with his wife. I'll be needing to provide him a simple cms & shopping cart that he can manage. No payments as we want to just use PayPal so as to avoid having to actually manage user data & credit card information.
Wish me well....
Also advices appreciated cause otherwise, I'm gonna use a simple Drupal or WordPress site with like 1 theme and 0 plug ins.4 -

Almost a month has gone by with my new job, and I already hate it. I thought it would be fun... but it is the worst!
They expect us to work 24/7! What are we? Robots? I am not working 24/7, end of discussion. Even if this means I have to quit my job at the end of this week if they don't agree to my "demands" about having a healthy working hours. I am already looking for a new job, because I got a feeling they won't want me there anymore after this week, because we're going to have a meeting about this.3 -
- 5 days until customer integration test. I finished my work for the test a week ago so I am relaxed. 10 days of estimated work for other team, 1 dev scheduled for this task.
I reminded of the deadline, which seemed not realistic anymore; "Don't be so pessimistic" they said, "Everything is fine", "We'll get it done".
- 2 days to go and half of the system doesn't work, the external test system rejects all data (nobody had time to read the specs -> let's call it 'assumption based development' (ABD))
I reminded of the deadline, and that I would like to have an internal test with all components beforehand; "Don't be so pessimistic" they said, "Everything is fine", "Just some minor issues".
- 1 day to go and dev from other team called in sick... (and I can really empathize this decision); "Someone else can jump in and finish the work" they said.
- An hour later the test was cancelled not even 24 hours before it should take place. We could have rescheduled the test more than a week ago, that wouldn't have been so disgusting and even save our customer some hours of preparation effort.
I hate myself when I was right from the start but wouldn't enforce my position because I'm too kind sometimes. -

More like a genersl question I guess. But how do you guys react to writing software that might make someone else get laid off? At work I developed an application that manages a lot of the inventories and yard management that had to be done by hand. While I was developing it, the manager that was giving me the details mentioned (jokingly) many times that if the software works as it was expected that they will not require certain people anymore. I shrugged it off as a joke since I could not imagine it being serious. Turns out, it was serious and some talks about company restructuring have taken place since I released the app into our servers. How the fuck am I supposed to feel? If someone loses their job because of something like this, how would someone go about NOT feeling guilty af?16 -
Warning: this is not a rant. I'm too happy and excited to rant right now.
Today I "finished" my first webpage!!!
Wohooo!
It's the blog I'll use. It's currently offline for obvious reasons but I intend to put it out there when I have more confidence on my skills and some content to put in it. I only used django, html and css, and I really dig the looks of it. My gf liked it so it can't be that ugly.
I still have a lot to learn with django, and I will add a thing or two to this
webpage but now I feel confident enough to make the backbone of my first real project : a platform to ease essay writing for history students. It's something simple for students to keep track of their essays thesis and ideas but also the bibliography they'll use and the thesis and ideas they think each text they read for the essay has. I intend later to extend the functionality so it can store all the texts the user has used in some useful and atractive manner so they can keep track of everything they've read, share it and use it for later works.
I'm so fucking excited I can't fucking sleep (it's 3 am right now).13 -
Former classmate: Our alma mater is looking for alumni to participate in career day. Share what skills you need and the steps you took for your career path!
Me: Thanks for the invite. But I’m not a good role model for this.
FC: Why not? You’re a successful engineer!
Me: So I used my full tuition university scholarship on an art degree because I was too depressed after a long physical illness. Oh, and for some reason a lot of y’all assumed I went to a private uni when I went to the public uni. Then I went to graduate school immediately after and during a recession and ended up with tens of thousands in student debt. Then I did a lot of part time jobs before going to a shady coding bootcamp. I’m lucky to have encountered an advocate and a company willing to take me on as a junior dev. I’m pretty sure I was a diversity hire and I was definitely underpaid. I’m lucky to have moved on from there and to be thriving now. I’d tell the students to skip college (like I had considered) and go into a trade. And I’d also tell them a lot of life is luck and not just hard work.

This is a personal rant, not a devRant. BUT ITS STILL A FUCKING RANT.
Anyways, I don't have a lot of friends. In fact, only one. That one friend used to pull of his moods on me, and I was more or less okay with that. When he was in a bad mood, I didn't annoy him too much. However, I expect the same from him.
Today he really triggered me badly, and at some point he knew he should just leave me alone. We were in a LoL lobby, and went into the Discord where I could hear how he is dragging me down, saying I'm an asshole etc. As a result of that, I left the lobby, and heard him say more bullshit. Then he talked about how he left at another server, since they were assholes and excluded them.
At was at that point were they deafed me. Meaning, I couldn't hear nor what they were saying or speak for myself. What is this bullshit? I mean, if your fucking best friend does this shit to you, how can you have faith or trust anybody else? It's just really fucked up, and fucking bullshit, and like the only place where I can vent off is here.
What a fucking piece of shit. And I keep forgiving him.5 -
!rant is a logic operator, right? As in NOT rant. So why do I so often see them on actual rants?

I'm trying out blazor at the moment, building a couple of prototypes. I really need to brush up on my html/css for the view stuff, and of course there are a few gotchas. But other than that, I really think Microsoft has nailed browser apps with this!
Client side, server side, a mix of both, runs in all major browsers + as PWA or Electron.
Wow.
All logic and view manipulation in C#, no JS. And the performance is great.

I'm thinking of buying a new laptop. But I'm sad about leaving all of these stickers (yeah I know they're pretty random)
also, should I get a macbook or not? I really like the OS but I hate it's pricetag. But i heard Apple supports their products for more than 5 years and this laptop of mine is just 3 and a half years old and it's slowing down already even on 16gb memory. IntelliJ used to run smoothly on this.

I made that request a month ago or so, not long after i started to use devrant more often than any other app, and i can say only that i am glad that i pressed "install" that time when i found it in the GoogleStore.

Truth is i feel a little bad now for doing that but i might be able to repay the founders and all mambers of this community somehow, someday. And i am looking forward to do it 😁

Care to help me with some some-what basic math?
100 characters exist in the ASCII codec.
I'm trying to figure out the minimum amount of characters required to encode them. (= Turning each digit into a two digit char set that doesn't mach any other char set to enable me to do other things with them. i.e: A = dE)
It would simply be: x^2, where x is the number of minimum characters required.. But I don't know how to interact that with 100 to find x.11 -

So it turns out when you tell normal people that your a software developer, they don't know what that is which explains why they don't ask you to fix anything hardware related2

Ok, so I have been lurking around here for a while now. Not at all knowing what to rant about. I like my work, I don't have to deal too much with annoying (or almost any at all) customers and all in all I feel fine.
However, I feel like I want to, in some way step into this awesome community in other ways than just comments and ++.
So this post will be about a book. It's almost our Bible. Well it's probably the closest thing to a proper part of the trilogy we will get.

Hello everyone :)
I left a job a while ago (8 month maybe a little more), before me alot of the team left, and the lasts ones left after me.
They hired back an ex teammate from years ago (he actually started the POC), but he doesn't do php so much and don't know symfony and he's alone. I'm not either (i don't like php), i was doing python and admin sys for them, but i saw the project going/evolving for two years, so i can help them.
They contacted me a week ago, asking me some help. I said yes, (because i believed in the company and i'm too nice i guess), so i spend two days making a new script to setup the environment and serveur and also had to do some package update on the project (late shit with pear php apparently).
I don't have any way to make a bill, i don't own any company. So I'm not sure what i should ask for money, and if i should keep helping them.
(it has been my first serious real job, and i put some money in the company that i took back).
Should i keep helping for nothing even if it's only few hours the month or should i change this situation fast?! (already worked 20h for them, and the boss a nice guy)
Thanks devRant3 -
Lenovo T series laptops are amazing. I've purchased one in 2010, it was too good to be true and used for 5-6 years, forgot about it after I upgraded to Mac. Didn't touch for ~2.5 years, turned on today for my nephew. It is still working like charm, even the battery holds charge for 2hours, I'm impressed 👍12

Finaly I write my first rant about dev stuff.
My mom works as a shop clerk in the optic shop (they sell glasses). It is a small shop run by family buisness (not by my mom, she is only employed there). She had been constantly complaining about the poor pc performance and how the program there are using for inventory managment always hangs.
Her boss decided to "upgrade" the pc's by buing macs, but he was stopped by me and my mom. (I was helping them with some IT stuff so i had a bit of a influence over that).
The program they are using was written by some amateur programer that is a boss of a similar shop somewhere in the country.
So i recommended to them to install SSD's to speed up their pc's, and it did nothing. Of course i blammed the poorly written program next.
The program hangs when you type in the find field. I wanted to check if my gut feeling was right so i asked them to have task manager open when they type. And my feeling was right.
When you change anything in the text find bar, the program sends a crap ton of requests to the local server and that server sends a crap ton of packiets back, enough to saturate the local connection...
I will try to rewrite the app myself, just for the challenge of it. I want to check if i can write a better one than this one pos. They still want to buy better pc's but they wont be any help to them... Well i will help them with that anyway (having good pc's is good anyway). I hope i can create the app that will fix their problems...3 -

I'm a proud man, but I'm not such a fan of my own farts that I can't admit when I maybe should have listened to other people's advice earlier.
After having been convinced of the scope of impact of AI by someone I respect, I started playing with the Jetbrains AI tools. I am impressed at its ability to process my code and give actually helpful input and to consolidate documentation into a form that is concise and helpful.
I finally get what people mean when they say it saves time.
A couple things that truly warmed me up to it is, one:
I wanted to know if I could return a string, float array, whatever, from c++ to a python script. I was assured the answer was yes, but I just COULD NOT get it to work, so I gave up on it. I asked the question to the Jetbrains AI (4o in this case) and it gave me what I needed, and now I can return a string from c++ to python no problem. There are a lot of little questions like this that I gave up on that I now have to explore again, which is both exciting and annoying, because I already have a thousand hobbies.
And two:
I am working on an html email. It's a mess of tables and text and inline styles. Compared to the markup I'm used to writing, it's tedious to trudge through to make even simple changes. I was able to successfully instruct it to make a specific copy change, while respecting the document's indenting, all on the first try.
I will forever maintain that it will enable a generation of drones that don't understand how to do simple things and will atrophy the skills of otherwise capable people that use it as a crutch.
I will also always maintain that its foundation is built on mass theft and is a monument to the uneven application of intellectual property protection laws. But with DeepSeek coming out and having done the same thing to them, I find myself enjoying the turnabout. I'm also amused that I coincidentally jumped into the pool right as things got interesting.
All that said, as a reference tool, like Google and Wikipedia used to be, it's not the force of pure evil I held it as. It is actually very useful and if used responsibly on an individual level, can be an amazing productivity tool and can even teach its users new things.1 -
As some of you might know I am currently working in a QA Team.
One of my "colleagues" asked me to help him with the automation of a simple page.
The tool we are using could not determine if a checkbox on a mask was checked or not so he decided to open a BUG!
This is not a bug the page is working fine (the checkmark is visible and the server handles the data correctly)!!
When I asked him why he opened the bug he said "Because I want the developer to make that easier for me!!!"
WTF This is your job! JUST GET IT FUCKING DONE!
I work my ass of to close the gap between testers and developers...
BUT IF I SEE THINGS LIKE THAT I UNDERSTAND EVERY DEV WHO WANTS TO PUNCH HIM INTO HIS FACE! -
How did you learn to think "like a programmer"?
I am starting to learn C++ and I am trying it out on exercism. I am really at the beggining but when I make it work after so much frustration(based on devrant posts I guess that's part of the job) I always see people having shorter/better/more effective codes which makes sense to me but I wouldn't thought of it that way.
Is there way to make such thinking better or does it simply come with practice ?6 -
why am I feeling so guilty about this? should I be feeling guilty about this?
PS : this is not a support request. I genuinely feel bad about writing that piece of code and sense something is wrong somewhere, but I cannot figure out what. I stared at the screen for quite a while before giving up.
maybe it might reveal itself to me when I continue staring at it tomorrow.12 -
Gotta love people. Recently I finished a small program to check the timetable because the predecessor app died. Make a release, get the link, send the link to the FB group (I don't use FB much anymore). Some likes, some comments, some shares, some bugs, nothing awful.

Me: There is a bug in the most recent "standard global software" release that causes data not to send properly to the device. There are 3 ways to send the same data to the device in the current release but they apparently don't do the same thing like they should. (Sent screenshots of the issue)
Standard Dev Support: "it's not a Bug it's a feature. So the development found out, that there are several problems with sending data to devices using "x" method. So they decided to stop "x" function in the latest release. Use "y" method instead."
Me: "X" and "y" methods are both still there. You didn't remove it in the latest release. So it is a fucking bug moron?!?

TIL that rants not loading when there's no internet is not a bug but a feature. A friend was going through the phone, and I don't keep mobile data, so he wasn't able know about the wk13 rants. Which is good because that would have destroyed him.

I got associated degree, it helped me to get my first job. From there I learned everything at work.
Associated degree and bachelor degree here are just titles, education in computer science over this country is not so good tbh. Far too few colleges are competent enough to give you a grasp of the current state of development world from the last 15 years.
So I'm not planning to get bachelor degree, it's expensive and has enough math to not like it(I had to see some math in my associated degree and haven't used in the last 9 years). I'm not in the machine learning, researching or that stuff field, so I'm not need of that. From what I can learn getting a bachelor degree, I think I can handle from my own to get the food on the table. Currently planning to start a startup -

iPad + Apple pencil ONLY for note taking during lectures
Yay or nay?
Got any other combos that arent ms surface with a pen? (Bad experience cause of ssd failures)
Or what about those Wacom tablets? Are they even good in terms of pen to screen response latency?
Educate me if you saw me as an ignorant piece of f but are there any tablet with stylus pen support that are almost input-lag free like the apple pencil with iPad? I once tried it in the store and boi did it truly impress me, also I haven't seen anything else close to it, I tried the Samsung ones, they didn't look to me as fast as the apple pencils

1Password new version is exactly that. It took a great product and made it better integrated with the laptops I use every day.
Not really ranting... but I wish this happened more often. -
Having a shit of a time trying to figure out why Docker containers are not accessing other containers via domain names as they should technically be going through the jwilder nginx proxy container.
Why can't environment setups ever be simple? -
So as some of you read. I'm having trouble deciding between leaving or staying at my current job. So I have a question related to that.
Is it considered poor form or a good thing to make myself available in my resignation letter for freelance work? I developed multiple products in platforms the other developer there does not know in languages he does not know. I don't want to leave them stranded as I like the company. But I also don't want to rub their face in my leaving.3 -
Dealing with clients is probably the biggest personal challenge. I'm not much of a people person, and I find it hard to converse with friends and people I've known for years, let alone clients who are looking for answers for why things aren't working, and wanting you to explain exactly (but in simple terms) why a thing that seems simple is so complicated.
Another challenge, which is somewhat related is expressing myself. This again, stems from not being super great or comfortable in conversations, but as a dev, even among other devs, your opinion on things gets asked a lot. For someone who was used to sticking with the status quo and mostly agreeing with things, stuff like peer code reviews, or giving pointers on how to implement something is a big challenge (but I'm improving)2 -
Love going to out-of-state programming courses on the company dollar!! Went to Germany, Denver, and Rochester, NY for Codesys training. Hate PLC programming but it's fun traveling and learning new things.

I finally did it. I installed Arch linux + Unity 3D + VSCode + budgie + vertex + sddm-deepin in virtualbox....
What a fucking journey and a half that was.
Now to install on an ssd for real...
My thoughts on the process:
1.) This is not for the faint of heart.
2.) Be preapred to devote some time getting it all right.
3. This was actually quite a rewarding process.1 -
I actually like where I currently work, sure it has problems and some office politics. The work is not always exciting but what makes it good is not having someone breathing down my neck about timesheets, noone cares if the hours you work are not exactly business hours and a bunch of other stuff.
What I really like though is having a boss who backs my judgement. If I refuse to commit to timelines or work without being given the information I need he'll support me. I've had too many yes men as bosses which always ends up with the devs coping all the blame when everything goes belly up. -
The worst project I worked on so far was a bash script of over 2000 lines written by two different people who both script differently. I was supposed to understand the script and "fix a few things".
Names of functions were as confusing as possible.
Up to this day I'm still forced to use it.3 -
Hey Friends! - Milo here once again, just would love to update all of my friends here today on my previous post! Man, I think teaching is sooo hard...
it seems I can only start from two points: or I suppose the person is rock dumb and start sentences like "you know what top means right?"
(this is especially true because I'm not in a English speaking country and all of my references are in English (cuz since I learned it, I think it's easier to find good content in English))
or I go like:
"you only have to create a branch with the feature, the a class that implements the X interface to do this"
when the person doesn't even know how to make a function.
And now, I could convince the boss git is important and we should use it (I'm a intern). Result is: I need to teach git (git above all things, I have to teach git) to the other intern because the two interns will be responsible for taking care of the repos.
Not saying that I will fuck up, but leaving the repos to the interns, is this really a good idea 😂4 -
Stop fucking waste my time with background image, I'm a fucking backend developer you pice of shit. Reach into your pocket and hire a designer or Web developer, I don't care that I can do it too, I don't fucking want to do it.4

I've never felt that great: just finished school, get my first job, get drunk with friend. Hope it will not end too soon.3

Does anyone else run to their desk to just put their headphones/AirPods on?

today i learned that deb https://xyz.repo restricted universal is indeed NOT a command
i'm now very familiar with my sources list

Its feels so damn good to know we live in a time where computation has become so damn cheap that Amazon gives away a Tesla configured system for around 2.5$ an hour ... Like seriously.. all this progress took it's time .. but still seems really fast .. well .. good for us .. no rant here 😂

Today marks the end of my first week as a full-time employee in this company (been here a month as a part-time before being hired).
I joined as a QA agent, but they put me in localization duty (in addition to QA) about two weeks in. This week, they told me I'd be responsible for the whole translation process, from choosing the tools to implementing them.
On one side, I'm excited as hell to have some responsibility. On the other, afraid I'll fuck it up and wreck my shiny new position.
Any tips on not fucking up you new job? 😅3 -
so i did this nice tool with data structures, dynamic ui composing, input sanitizing, modularity and scalability with tidy and efficient javascript and useful css.
showing it to my boss: "cool what you can do with html". WAT?
(he is not a programmer but knows i´m into web-programming) -
I was at school the whole last week, and could work on my Ruby / React project the whole time, but now that I'm back to work, I forgot how to PHP 😅

Faith in humanity restored (for now anyway)
I forgot my jacket containing everything I had with me (money, id, credit cards, etc) in a cafeteria this noon. Now, at 6pm I remembered and stormed over with vivid pictures about the hassle of replacing the cards, getting a new Id, and trying to survive on no money during that time, just to find it as I have left it. Nothing missing! People seem to be nice sometimes.
Well, it wouldn't have hurt anyone,if they'd put some money in it for starters.5 -
!Rant. My previous job hunting experience was great. I joined a platform that focuses not only on getting the best candidate for the company, but also the right fit for the candidate. After my coding test, I recieved a T-shirt and a book as a welcome gift. I also got partnered with a talent advisor. I received multiple interview requests on my first weekend and found my dream job by the following Wednesday. I then got a signing bonus in my first week and a expensive bottle of champagne from them to say good luck. The only problem I have is that they found me such a great job with huge amount of future growth opportunities that I will not be using them in the future. Shout out to OfferZen.com for looking out for devs and making the pain of finding a job feel more like a Dungeon and Dragons quest.

I feel bad for bootcampers. Their schools tell them to apply for a job even if they don’t have all the qualifications because they will learn on the job. That’s fine if you’re applying for an upgrade in the same career path. But when you’re changing careers, a lot of jobs don’t necessarily have time to invest in you like that.
I do have respect for those who DM me on Slack and ask if the job is open to new bootcamp grads. At least they are taking the initiative to ask and not sulking that they’re not good enough.
I tell them “this role requires experience in x. If you have that, then apply” because I don’t actually know they’re not qualified.
I was like them before. It’s hard to get the first job and sometimes it’s a lot of luck. But the first job will make getting the next one easier.
At least they’re not recruiters trying to convince me to pay them to fill the role.1 -

So I thought I had a basic, high level understanding of C++ STL strings, pointers, copy constructors and stuff. In comes a dirname, a -D_GLIBCXX_USE_CXX11_ABI=0 and... Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore.
So what is happening? I copy a string expecting a deep copy, but then I do the dirname or manipulation on the copy and it messes up *both* strings. gcc/C++ I know you're a beast, but what's going on there? Thing is only possible if I cast away const from c_str - which of course is a doubtful operation - but there also seems to be some strange copy on write logic that the data pointers initially point to same memory location and only with first manipulation on the copy they start to point to different addresses.
I had no clue. And still don't have.4 -
just got a "privilege update" now i'm responsible for not only my software but for the webservers too...thanks admin guys...now i have more bullshit to deal with1

I have my 121 in a few days with my new manager and am trying to get a raise either through moving from junior to mid level dev or being given a significant raise , am being paid a tad below the London market rate's lower range for my skill level.
Any advice on how to approach the topic?
Some bits of my background:
I got almost 4 years of exp :
almost 2 working there...
6 months short term contract as a ruby sql dev another company...
1.5 years worked for an abusive joke of a company who took advantage of my naivety since i was fresh out of uni ( did stuff like pressured me to add more features to a pojo system i made for them) barely learned anything there since i was the only IT person there developing solo, the project lasted 1.5 years and was a total mess to finish, so am not too sure of factoring it into my years of exp.
My Qualifications are:
bsc in information systems
Msc in enterprise sw engineering
My "new" Manager is seeking to retire real soon.
The company isn't doing too well but we just landed 2 big customers who are buying the product my team is working on
I Am one of two last devs on my team and we are barely holding on with the load, can't afford the time to train a newbie to join us
my department is soon to be sold (soon according to what mgr says). They have been saying so for 10 months now.
Last year , since the acquisition Is taking so long and funds were running out We were hit by a wave of redundancies which slashed our workforce in august/ july, told we could last till march this year on our funds . Even senior staff were on a reduced work week...but since we Got new customers then money should be coming in again , this should mean thats no longer the case. Even the senior staff have returned to 5 day work weeks.
Am being given only JavaScript work to do despite being hired as a junior java dev, my more senior colleagues dont wanna even touch js with a long stick
Spoke to 3 recruiters , said they got open roles in the junior- mid level range that pay the proper market range if am interested to put my cv through.
Thats like 25% more than I currently make.
Am a bit scared to jump into a mid level position in another company because i lack a bit confidence in my core java skills.
although a senior dev who used to be on my team thinks i can do it.
i recon i can take on the responsibilities of a mid level dev in me existing company since am pretty familiar with the products
I dont get to work with senior devs and learn from them since we are so stretched thin, hence am not really getting the chance to grow my skills
I know i have gaps in my knowledge and skills having not been able work in java for a while hasn't allowed me to fix that too well. I badly need to learn stuff like proper unit testing, not the adhoc rubbish we do at the moment, frameworks like spring etc
Since I have been pretty much pushed into being the js guy for the large chunks of the project over the last year , its kinda funny am the only guy who has the barest idea how some of the client facing stuff works
The new manager does seem to be a nice guy but he is like a politician, a master bullshitter who kept reassuring all is well and the company is fineeee (just ignore the redundancies as the fly past you)
The deal for thr aquisition seem to have sped up according to rumors
And we heard is a massive company buying us, hence things might pick up again and be better than ever
Any ideas how to approach the 121 with him?
Any advice career wise?
Should i push for a raise ?
promotion to mid?
Leave to find a junior to mid level position?
Tought it out and wait for the take over or company crash while trying to fill the gaps in my knowledge ?
Sorry for the length of this post2 -

I saw many devs here complaining about WordPress, which I used to do. But recently WordPress saved me in work.
Client needed a fully functional e-commerce site with some custom logic in 3 days, which is required only for 2days for a contest. So we developed the site in WordPress in 2days, 1day testing and data upload.
So I'm not sure if there is any solution other than WordPress or platform like that to help in these kind of situations.3 -
I never had a fight. And I mean never at all, not just dev-related.
I'm not sure that this is a good thing.
Sometimes I wonder, does this mean that I'm a good diplomat, or that I'm not relevant enough to argue with?1 -

today I will have the last of my high school finals.
I feel like after today I will be a free boy (for three months, at least). Like I have won the game, beaten the boss level.
After 7 years of resisting to comply to this system which tries so hard to shape every pupil into a compliant individual, it will be done.
My creativity and productivity (which lies in tech, which isn't really represented in any subject in my school), set free.
No more mandatory pseudo-interest in loads of literature and cultural history. The bits that are interesting would have come to me anyways through Reddit.
Victory is mine. YAY \o/
World, here I come!
P.S. yes, of course, there were also positive things. I'm actually thankful for that time I failed the year's end exam about literature which ended in me having to redo that year. It landed me with loads of free time, which got me into tech-tinkering, a now two-year employment as a programmer, and a juniar participation at the nearest Hackerspace. And a chance to pretty much build and operate a 3D-printer, for which the physics department mostly covered the cost. The school unknowingly gave me the opportunity to extend my own horizon outside of school, and it brought me so much nice things. :) But the mandatory interest in literature and cultural/religious history and the lack of technical subjects and the digital oppression still sucked.
P.P.S. oops that was only supposed to be a short P.S. -
When I see a blog post advertising “best practice for _____” but you didn’t write it, and I’m pretty sure I’ve been using it longer than your company has existed” ... I feel angry and don’t trust what you say, even if you’re right. You can share what your experience has been, but nobody died and made you god of the technology.3

I'm doing this refactor in a project.
Got stuck on a decision that is not mine to make.
Colleague has a day off and could not respond.
I could not continue in either direction. Because the solutions I found are not improving the issue.
How to deal with such an issue?2 -
Here in Brazil we call flash drive's a "pendrive". Why? IDK. What do you call it in your country?19

I want to start with web development and combine ESP projects with a nice interface or just to make a small websites showing algorithms in an animation. (Just as examples) But where the hell do I start. I have a background with C/C++ and python but want to develop more skills. Like do I go with react, node.js, typescript and postgres or something else? And what are the first steps I should take? If any of you got tutorials they can recommend I'd really appreciate that, because I feel like there are a ton of BS tutorials out there...3

Being a while I was here fe. Guess I have had nothing to be angry with, at or by. I have not really being coding lately (well I have but for like 2 hours or less a day) maybe because I overworked myself in the past months and finished up most of the backend requirements for the startup. Quite bored with the project lately. Now I just manage the team and make sure everyone is doing what they are supposed to be doing. I have simply being at home watching animé and floating through my days. Planning a trip in a few days to hopefully get me out of this unenthusiastic funk as I am starting a new job next month and would love to be of top energy and motivation by then.1 -

my proposed project was accounting system for small scale businesses. after painstakingly copy pasting codes xD from an existing project(which i have previously made during college days), although i have already anticipated this idea and wasnt really planning to create a five-star-in-usability kinda system for a small project, i realised that i cant make accounting a standalone system, it has to be a module. just a module. but i dont like that, it defeats the grand purpose of what i really want my system to be, it has to be a standalone system with fewer user inputs.
welp. gotta do what u gotta do now. create additional modules(inventory, invoicing, etc). also deadline's a couple of weeks from today. -
I lost half my day yesterday because stakeholders made a change to one of the systems that I need. I noticed my dev environment could not longer authenticate into the system. That usually happens when there’s a “refresh” of that system. Meaning that someone copied the production instance over to the staging one, which wiped out my user credentials. One stakeholder thought he had to notify me AFTER the system refresh and not before. Another stakeholder thought it was my task to restore my user. Nope, I’m only a user for this system. I’m not responsible for any maintenance. They weren’t understanding what they had to do even after I sent them messages saying that I can no longer authenticate and I need them to check my username and password are active and correct for the staging instance.
