I'm almost 29 and only have finished high school. I never new what I wanted to do until 7 years ago. Software engineering and development.

It took me a little while an some effort to find a employer who sees my potentials and is willing to invest in me.

Two weeks ago I decided to finally go back to school again (self study). Last week my boss told me he is proud and willing to share the costs.
Today my books arrived.

I am so excited and nervous!! November 5th (also my birthday) will be the first day of school.

Le me having a chit chat with a student after sharing about programming in my former high school..

Student: "I learnt Java the other day, and I don't really like it"

Me: "Why?"

Student: "Because we can import existing packages on the community to do almost anything"

Me: "And? How is that bad for you?"

Student: "It's not very challenging, isn't it? I want to build everything in my program with my own code!"

A friend of mine is heavily into java. Like seriously... programming teachers at our school ask him for help.
Everytime he gets drunk he starts saying the weirdest things like "DUDE what's your alpha value I can hardly see you".
He greets me with "What's up socket boy" and after throwing up he thinks about the best ways to sort the data. (his vomit)

Has anyone else had such experiences? I want to hear some funny stories! :D

Programming as much as I can now because I've been behind on my school stuff so for the rest of the month no programming until I catch up and go ahead.

I can't wait till college so I can learn whatever I want.

I've been doing programming as a hobby since I was 10 years old, I've always found my teachers are good at IT but not that good in Computer Science and programming, this year a new teacher joined the IT department who has actual experience in programming etc.
Our school uses two services, a rewards system which for some reason can also show our timetable, and another service for displaying our homework. In my spare time I made a project which combined these two services and showed it to him. As the first teacher with actual programming experience he was impressed and now I get to 'pitch' my project to the teachers higher up.

TLDR; It's good to have a good teacher

After working as a developer for 4-5 years I finally took up school again.

The teacher at our first programming course insisted that we named all our variables in our locale language (swedish) and always started arrays at index 1.

School: Do you want to learn programming?
Me: Yes.
School: Do you want to learn about operation systems and networks?
Me: Yeah, sounds cool.
School: Do you also want to learn basic electrophysics?
Me: But I will rarely need it if I become a SE.
School: Well too bad!

So I used to be a chef, then I got married and decided my weekends and holidays were better spent than making food for ungrateful shit-wagglers, or getting screamed at in Lebanese by the exec Chef during dinner service at the end of a ten-hour shift, so I went back to school for Computer Engineering. I was so worried because I swore compulsively from day one of classes.
Little did I know way back then, the first programming language I ever learned was swearing.

All these people talking about learning to code at school makes me feel old. There wasn't even an option to learn programming when I was at school. Had to teach myself!

Guidance counselor at school: so what field do you want to go into?

Me: computer science

GC: what does that entail?

Me: programming

GC: that's like super repetitive, right? You're a smart kid don't do that

I'm in grade 9.
I started a programming club in my school.
I told them that I'd teach basic HTML,JS,CSS,C++,C,Java.
Nobody signed up.
Because it happens on Thursdays.
FML.
However, people told other people that I have wicked programming skills and so one of the school staff asked me to help them maintain their school website, which is currently just Google Sites (*vomit).

you get a turn left function. it turns a 'turtle' left any amount of degrees that you pass it, you have to make a turn right function to turn right 90 degrees. well, if you thought turning left -90 degrees was a good idea to make a turn right function, then fuck you. you have to turn left three timeswith the default 90 degrees instead because it's more practical/logical.

anyone else hate the movements to get programming into schools?

I have been in this field almost 13 years and experienced multiple burnouts. But now feels different.

I miss those days when i spent all nights doing programming on junior high school.

Once you turn your hobby into a profession, it may ceases to be your hobby anymore.

As a high-school student who has learned to program, i can't understand why programming isn't standard curriculim. It makes it so much more fun to learn math and physics. I also think even basic understanding of it improves how we use technology

It all started in the year 2013.
I was 13 years old back then. I was a fan of Minecraft and so I learned how to setup a bukkit server and ran it. Installing plugins was fun, because I could be a "hacker" and change the configs.
After a while, (~2014), when I was in the 9th grade of elementary school, I saw Unity. A free game engine. Of course, me being a 14 year old I was intrigued and so I downloaded it, made an account and a new project. I had absolutely ZERO knowledge of programming. Didn't even know what languages existed, so i resorted to presets and poorly put together characters + weapons.
After some time fiddling around with Unity, I've gotten a hang of the basics (not programming related).
My actual programming started when I started High School (year 2016). It's a computer engineering school and for the first part of the year, I've learned from my teacher in C# (Console.WriteLine/ReadLine/Loops/Variables). At the second semester I started to gain interest and motivation to program at home. I did the programs we made in school (random number guessing game) but better. Improved it, added colors.
After that, I started developing in Unity - Actually learning something and having the ability to develop something all by myself. It keeps driving me on. In the second year (the year I'm visiting right now) I tought myself HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, PHP. I'm very happy and also can't wait to discover and learn new things in these languages!
My latest project was an Android application for my father that he asked for (it calculated the price of the 3D print he would make).

I have teens in my classroom who want elite hacker status but complain about doing programming exercises outside of class. >.<

I explain to them that learning to code takes a lot of practice and can be frustrating at first. Some still went to the dean complaining that my class is tough. I work at a private school where open communication is encouraged and social justice is a thing.

So, I'm over here like "How do I reach these kids?"

I'm optimistic and I try different approaches to teaching and learning. Some stuff has worked. A lot haven't.

I figure I'd ask here: Does anyone have a suggestion for any creative programming exercises/projects that are beginner-friendly, legal, and hacker-ish? (I teach intro to Java.)

When I learnt programming, sugar was still made out of salt and hence not used in coffee.

Also, we didn't have source level debuggers, only the "print" method. However, compiling was also slow. It was faster and more convenient to go through the program and execute the statements in one's head. This helped understanding what code is doing just by reading it. It also kept people from trial and error programming, something that some people fall for when they resort to single step debugging in order to understand what their own code is even doing.

Compiling was slow because computers in general were slow, like single digit MHz. That enforced programming efficient code. It's also why we learnt about big Oh notation already at school. Starting with manual resource management helped to get a feeling for what's going on under the hood.

So my programming teacher never indents her code. Looks like I'm switching school lol

I am a New student in a programming school. Haven't coded enything ever. Use 1 week to make html, css and JavaScript website from scartch. *Happy for my achivement* curent teacher comes to review my work. Tells me it's shit. Teacher uses only ready maid templates... Fuuuuuu

So I'm 17, I go to a vocational school and I'm in a computer IT and networking class as a junior. We have learned programming in HTML and CSS and whenever I'm programming I'm having the most fun, so I am teaching myself C++! I don't really feel welcome due to my age but I hope all of you can help me in the future!

My CS teacher uses html 4 spec that has shit like <strong> and <font size=5> and all sorts of inline garbage. She writes the tags in ALL CAPS and it honestly looks like SQL had a baby with brainfuck. I can't handle this shit anymore. She feels like she's apparently very good at programming and has just been promoted to the School's CS HOD (Head of Department). I have no idea what to do I go to school everyday having to face her mutilating my interest in programming. My peers are all incompetent and don't care at all. Don't get me started on how she writes Python. What the fk man.

Basically a senior dev that felt attacked because I (still in (IT-) school) could solve his 'oh so hard' programming test 'with ease'. He then went on and wanted to hear one specific answer from me on a very broad question. I (obviously) couldn't read his mind, so he started using that to make me look bad in front of the recruiter.

My point is, that a PROGRAMMING school should support all platforms if they consists that we have to bring our own machines to class.

In the first lesson on the school the teacher mentioned the fibonaci formula, and because I already had a little experience in programming I wrote a program witch outputs a given amount of numbers after the Fibonacci formula and showed it to the teacher who didn't really showed any reaction. At the end of my time in the school while the exams preparation he told us that last year one part of the exam was to program for the Fibonacci formula. At this point I realized that my little experience in programming was already to much for the class and why I did not learn any thing in 2 years.

My discussion with my company sistem admin :
Me : you must always think that users are dumb and will make mistakes (like putting letters when db saves as number)
He : users must learn, if they make such mistakes its their fault.

My claim: I learned early in school to always assume that users are stupid and will always find bugs and exploits by coincidence. So protect your code from bad imput

Why is GOTO deprecated and not recommend!?
It was fun in school days programming, I used to write code randomly then use GOTO to sequence it.

All the time while I'm programming I hate Java.... Don't hate me now :D I'm learning Java in high school. I very love very fast programming languages such as C and C++, so this is why I don't like Java, but there are some reasons why I like Java. I just started learning how to create own window. What the hack is this? This is so simple. I tried to create window in C/C++ with OpenGL, just blank window with color. Complicated..... But with java it's fairy tale.
You can add me now to Java familly, but remember I also love C++.

Tldr; make sure what you study is relevant to the field and you enjoy it otherwise don't waste your time.

So I am almost 3/4ths through a master's in cs and I am contemplating why I went to school in the first place/dropping out.

My program is basically an extension of the bs I got from the same school meaning we learn very general cs topics. There is only one ai class for example.

I had a junior developer position before I even got my bs so now that I am this far along and looking at job openings I'm wondering what why and how my school is able to get away with teaching us this shit.

After all my schooling I learnt more on my own and through Google. I have little to show for my school work other than a degree that says I did a bunch of busy work. And the specific things that I did learn I will never ever remember. Seriously. Who here knows what a MIB and OID are and have actually used them?

I wish I tried harder to get into a school like Berkeley but just looking at their applications is depressing. I always had issues with school and they expect my to have the grades, extra curriculars and other shit. I'll build you a robot or make you a website but I'm not doing that nonsense.

And then there's Google and apple and all these big tech companies expecting me to have written full Enterprise software and know every single algorithm and programming language because everyone uses something different. Sure I wish I had experience in all 50 languages that are popular right now but I don't. And I'm not gonna learn it from school that's for damn sure.

Who here actually went to a good school and can say it helped them in the real world? How many employers actually care about school over actual experience?

Who knows how to burn a school down and get away with it? Or at least make teachers with Phds stop reading off slides all lecture. I know how to fucking read for fucks sake. Not too mention they use shitty software made in 2003 that's no longer supported. And I could go on about the teacher last quarter who graded the midterm on final day while he flirted with the 3 girls in class. And I could go on and on and on but I feel like I need to start being productive so I don't waste away.

It's my favorite language because I started learning programming in Java when I was in school.
The most annoying thing in Java is I don't feel like writing System.out.println each time.

I regret that I didn't start learning to code before I went to university and that I never had Computer Science/Programming classes before in school (which is not really my fault but I always wished for this)

My dadddddddy, he got me a computer when i was 6/7 and i used to go on it everyday (mostly ms paint drawing the most bullshit stuff 😂 and pirating games like gta vice city 😍) and then when i turned 10 he told me about programming and he introduced me to scratch loved tht shit😍 so i started teaching my self VB.net , the regular beginner copy paste and then when i was 12 i finally learnt c# and i downloaded unity, unreal engine and cry engine and tons of others but stuck with unity and now im just waiting for school to finish so i can start to do programming with out being interrupted by homework🙄

Some of these things have been probably mentioned already in some way, but I'd like to add my two cents nevertheless
I grew up in Germany and have been in the German school system for my whole "school career" and what I always missed was a computer/programming related subject. (A real one, not this thing where they teach how to use MS Office) Something that would have pushed me a bit more into this world of technology and programming way earlier, because I didn't know which possibilities I had. It doesn't happen often that I think that something is better in Slovakia but I have to say that in Slovakia they are teaching CS in standard schools from the age of 11or 12 I think. I don't exactly know what they teach there, maybe it's shit, but it's something at least. I know that most people swear on teaching themselves programming and all but there are people like me who struggle with that.
Then of course I'd like to see the teaching get better. They should teach the useful stuff and focus on practical experience.

Up until last year I was pre-med. I graduated college with a bachelors in Biology. Took my MCAT, prepped my med school applications for submission, and then realized I didn’t wanna pursue this pseudo-dream I had for so long. I realized the reality of the sacrifice and the lifestyle I was gonna make and began to regret not studying what I truly liked to be doing on my off time which is computers and programming. Long story short, here I am back in school getting a degree in CS, and can whole heartily admit, I’m happy doing/learning what I love.

It’s amazing how life works. Never would I have imagined that I’d make a switch like that, but I know it’s the best decision I’ve made so far.

Today I bought my first (non school-required) programming book! ☺

I’m new to programming. I first learned G-Code and M-Code for CNC machines and being a machinist got boring, so now I’m in School for computer science. But I swear, the amount of motherfuckers that act like they are the programming gods and they know everything there is to know just because they’ve been a programmer for so and so amount of years just grinds my gears. They act like some knowledge is important while other knowledge is useless, and generalize it and push that belief on everyone. But fail to realize that some people, such as myself, just love computers in every facet. I don’t give a damn how many years of programming experience you have and how many people you’ve taught. If you act like a stuck up know it all and walk around like your shit don’t stink, I wouldn’t work with you even if I had the same amount of experience as you.

Don't bother programming anything for us. We'll never use it. (I work at an IT help desk Technician at a school and this was from the IT director)

They now use 3 of my projects (one SSO authentication, another issue tracker, and the other inventory)

I knew I was destined for programming when I was 11 or so, and I would spend my days after school until bedtime building levels with the Doom map builder. Shortly after that I begged my parents for a C++ for dummies book. Never looked back.

My junior high school computer programming (Visual Basic) teacher.
She was the spoiled brat of our head teacher. Had just graduated and gotten her bachelor degree. Didn't know jack shit about programming or teaching. Would constantly mock and belittle us for not being able to answer the questions and didn't actually teach us anything.

I really wish every school curriculum made a basic programming class mandatory. At worst, it would give everyone somewhat of an idea of how computers work.

I started programming 2 years ago. I didn't know what to do with my life after high school, so I went to an event where you can meet students. I ran across the IT schools section, wearing a GEEK sweater, and almost immediatly, 5 students were right in front of me to talk about their school.
One hour later, I said "yeah why not", even if I didn't know ANYTHING about programming.
One or two weeks later, I took the entrance exam, and one month later I knew that I passed.

At school I was excited when our teacher said he will teach us programming with VS.
I was expecting C# to show my skills but the he showed us a big book about Visual Basic with VS Express 2010.
I was literally dying.

Had a laptop on which i learned programming. bought a new convertible for uni, so i passed my laptop to my younger sister.

halfway through the reset process i realize i forgot all my programs i had written, including many java, a c#, and some written android apps i was kinda proud of ... plus my neural network i had finally finished with much struggle😥

Well is a long story, but to make it short, a friend started to teach me HTML after that at school they taught me c++, and after my first "Hello World" I was hooked, since then I became an addict to programming and now to devrant

My IT teacher in high school. Got me into programming, helped me take programming from a hobby to a career and is still helping me today. Honestly one of the coolest people I know.

My last successful project was a small project I did together with my gf in javascript. She needed to make some algorithms for school for transfering
freight containers and picking them up. I made some visuals and buttons for her to press. And she added a file with algorithms based on the helper functions I created. such as: GetFirstEmptyPosition() or PlaceContainerAt(x, y)

She learned a bit of programming. And I learned a bit of javascript.

I'm just a student, but I always feel like a badass when the class treats me like almost like a teacher when it comes to programming.

Our actual programming teacher is new, so she doesn't always teach well (don't get me wrong, she's nice and I do know my place as a student) so my classmates usually approaches me when they need clarification or they got an error on their code. Makes me feel useful :D

I had two teachers in school, who even after finishing the class, continued to program with interested students. For example programming a robot or communicating over the serial port of a computer using Java.

SHE'S ALSO A STUDENT ASSISTANT IN MY CYBER SECURITY CLASS BUT DOESN'T KNOW WHAT THE localhost IP IS. I UNDERSTAND THAT I DON'T KNOW EVERYTHING BUT AT LEAST I DON'T ACT LIKE I DO. IT'S SO INFURIATING!!!!!!

Becoming an 'almost' decent developer these past few years has made me realize how absolutely undeserved my ego was back in high school when I first joined DevRant and StackOverflow and thought i was 'all that' just because i did some programming thing stupid teenagers found cool in a random school.

At 24 I can say I'm happy for the internet knocking me down a few pegs when my 16-17 year old ego got out of hand. I feel it's really made me better in the long run.

my temper has improved a lot, but around high school i had a really short fuse. we were doing a programming homework and i really blew up with this guy.

the day before the deadline i couldn't finish the work (that i was doing solo), because i had a violin recital. i told the other 3 to finish it, it was very simple stuff. i got at school the next day, they hadn't done what i asked, and this asshat meddled with what i had done, so i had to fix his changes to my code and implement what was left an hour before class. i really gave him a piece of my mind, i was super pissed, and my friends were super awkward because I'm usually a quiet person, and it's scary when i get angry for real.

I work for a programming / design studio / tech and new solution company. We do all kind of new tech inventions.
Everyone is a tech guru, except my boss who don't know one single programming language, don't know even how to format a pc, never finished his school..

The other day we asked me how to change his phone ringtone..

I'm absolutely loving the fact that my university is making me take their intro to programming course this fall when I've taken 5 programming classes in high school and already have intro to programming credits from a different university. Did I mention that I passed the AP Computer Science exam before taking even more courses? Do they not understand that I do in fact understand how to use recursion(the most advanced topic in their intro course) and don't need to spend a semester relearning what I already know? For Christ's sake they don't even get into OOP in that course.

So, today I was told I will be the one to represent my school in a programming competition.

This is a huge accomplishment for me! To think I would be the one they chose out of everyone who wanted to get in as well, it just surprises me.

and the the next day he is like "i'm gonna implement the code you were supposed to do so it does 4 more thing you couldn't even think about it"

and i have to spend all my day changing how I wrote my code because it's (for me) impossible to re-use my code in relation to the new implementations

It has given me a great understanding of how important perfection is. At school everyone said, "you spend too much time perfecting everything" or "spread your* effort, rather than spending lots of time on one thing and rushing another." But now, in programming, knowing where to put the time and effort is the most useful skill I could ever need.
Also, I can barely use the mouse correctly anymore, except when playing video games.

I always wanted to be an airforce pilot since I was a kid. Then snes came, spent a great deal of hours playing so many games. I got curious on how they were created and although I did it, I always wondered why people blow on cartridges if the game won't start. Fast forward to CS, Diablo 3, Red alert. I was fascinated whenever I type something on the console and something happened, that got me excited. Add that I was using wordstar and programming HTML/CSS in school when I was just 10-11. When I turned 12, I was programming using Borland C++. It just snowballed from there, curiosity and a series of my programs working made me focus a lot of my time talking to computers (especially when I built robots using lego mindstorms). While my classmates were having a hard tim deciding what course to take in college, I was already certain since I was just a sophomore in high school. I will write and talk to computers until I wear thick glasses.

I'm a fresh school dropout (against my will) without any diploma. I've learned programming from self teaching since three years; mostly doing web and apps development with golang, and c#.

I've already done some small projects, helped a lot of people with code, do some freelance and I'm now trying to build a SAAS.

I don't know what I'm supposed to do now, I'm completely lost for my future. What would you do if you were in this situation ?

I wish I had programming friends in my life all I have are kids at middle school that dont know anything about programming and left alone to my mind about all the languages I know and I am left with home work that's like 9th grade math even though I'm in 8th annnd including science,English,And history PE don't mind but out of them all I wish I had programming friends yay 😒 looking forward towards 8th grade again 😒

I was good at school, I was and I'm still loving video games. I wanted to create my video games. Now I like robots and I'm learning how to create robots. I could say : programming allowed me to build and personnalize the things I liked in my life. And I found who I am. I love to create.

A previous colleague of mine had plenty of years in the industry as a Java developer, but somehow still had absolutely no idea what he was doing. We used to send screenshots of his PRs to each other just to give our eye balls something to roll about - I have never seen anything like it, anywhere.

After multiple warnings of never delivering a single thing he eventually "voluntarily" left the company. He now works at a school teaching programming to students. The circle is complete.

I'm currently volunteering as a student assistant at my school, and today I've gotten the same question 20x. What question do you ask: "Why doesn't ^ return the power of the 2 numbers?"

It turns out that last week they've had a Math class from a new teacher (no programming experience) who said that if you want the power of 2 numbers you have to use the ^ operator...

When I was 8 I discovered RPG Maker 2000 by chance... I started making little games and basically never stopped.
Fast forward a few years, I wanted to know how to do the 'real' stuff SO BAD. So I chose a CS-oriented high school, which filled in some gaps in my otherwise self-taught programming skills.
Discovering Ogre3D was the final nail in the coffin.

I'm back. I'm the old itsnameless. I left programming because high school stuff. It was just overwhelming. I, slowly, left programming until the point I forgot everything. A lot of evaluations, high school stuff just for remembering NOTHING. The only thing I did this year on high school was losing a really big part of my time remembering weird stuff.

After all this stuff, I would love to spend my 2 months vacations mostly in the place that I've met lovely, awesome people. That place is called devRant.

yea. so fun story, my first computer science class I took freshman year where I knew more about programming than the teacher, not to mention most of the people in that class had 0 interest in actually learning computers

During Summer school (yeah I'm an idiot) I disabled this LanSchool Helper thing with a few lines of powershell script(fuck windows, havent used it since I was like 15) that allowed the teacher to see what the students were doing on their computers. Instead of finishing my failing courses I was then able to spend the rest of my time that Summer honing my programming skills.

I graduated a year late, but had easily become the best programmer that school district had ever seen 😎 And by impressing the kids sitting next to me while I browsed docs, blogs, stack overflow, and youtube - rose to be a Summer school legend.

In the first two years at my school, I'm gonna do much stuff in the programming lessons that I already know. That's going to be boring. Very boring.

So once in school, I went to my CS lab to find my friend cursing under his breath. On asking him, he tells me that he can't figure out how to print his code in BlueJ(our school requires us to use BlueJ). So I told him to download another IDE and use that instead. He had a look of bewilderment in his eyes and asked me what an IDE is. He was absolutely shocked to learn that you could write Java programs elsewhere.

P.S This was our fourth year of Java

I didn't really plan to study computer science, it just kinda happened. So when a few years into school my GPA was low my mom concluded it wasn't right for me.

Thing is, I knew I was good at programming and problem solving and so did my classmates. I even helped people who the school system said were smarter than I was.

So now I am constantly doing projects and freelancing with hopes that I'll prove myself to her.

I'm in a programming school that gives only projects in C and a method to learn quickly.
Then we don't have official web classes or anything so we have "Labs" or "Clubs" and last time I was at a web programming club, leaded by students (because it gives me some more credits).

I was very surprised because they began to try to learn us the Javascript without talking about DOM.

And their explications about server-side and client-side codes were not clear (and obviously not exhaustive).
I have some (not a lot neither) experience in web programming so I helped him to make his course more understandable but I can't believe that these courses are given by students who don't have any idea of what's web programming...

Went to some school for testing out different industries but didn't have any goal nor found anything I was really interested in..
So i was tested for qualifications and told I was too stupid to be in IT..
So I decided to prove them wrong, went for an it supporter ground course and aced it with top grades + extra courses..
But still had no goals or dreams.
On that education, I met a friend who wanted to be a web programmer, so I decided to walk that path and aced another education with top grades..
Then I found, that I actually sorta enjoy programming and doesn't get bored quickly so then, I decided to plant my flag and become a programmer :)

I've seriously learned more about programming in 2 months at my internship then I did in 2 years on my own

So glad my high school gave me this opportunity. But currently I'm bored because I can't start the next step of my project yet. -_- So bored

What are the things in computer science do I need to learn?

So yeah, I'm still in high school and will be entering IT in a few years, but I am willing to learn now. I already have a good grasp of programming and can create good desktop apps and basic web apps, so teaching basic concepts such as variables, loops, functions is done for me.. But what computer science concepts should I learn next?

So back in 8th grade, I thought I would have a really good time, good grades and shit... you know the drill.

Then comes the worst main teacher I have EVER had (will call her Jane Doe because I still have some respect...).

For some odd reason Jane REALLY hated me and one of my friends.

She asked irrational questions in exams, didn't write on the whiteboard, didn't write organized summaries of the learning material... basically a bitch.

I worked my ass off for 2 weeks working for a literature exam on the level of high-school finals (she did that, while straying further away from the actual fucking curriculum our ministry of education has created), and I got the worst grade I have ever had.

Me and my friend both got a fucking 55/100 on an exam I have worked on for 2 weeks. 2 fucking weeks. No computer, no programming, just literature, while my other friend just completely guessed his answers and didn't REMOTELY elaborate and got a fucking 95/100 on his test. Because of Jane, I had the worst average grade I have ever gotten in my life on the second third of the year: 68.5/100. When the high schools in my area were opening for registration I had to come with this ugly ass average and my current school rejected me (at first). After I finished 8th grade, Jane took pity on me and I got a 74.8/100 on the final average. Still, 0.2 points from the minimum. So I got in to my current high school under special conditions.

Jane's excuse?

"It's training for high school".

Semester after had a python elective. Was ahead of everyone due to my internship so teacher let me do what I want to if I help other students so I just experimented with stuff

Few months after high school I dropped out of one college after a gap year I ended up in an associates in programming program at another college. Graduated July 2020

I feel I'm doing alright for myself most of the time

I had just finished programmer school (Air Force Tech School), and was all set to wade into the world of C++ programming. Got to my first job, and they set my down at a VT220 terminal on a VAX 11/780 and said, "You are the new sys admin." Talk about disappointment. My first actual coding? I got to apply a software patch to a Gould SEL 67 that only had a Mod 40 TTY as an interface ... yes, pretty much a typewriter ... no terminal screen. I am so happy technology has advanced as much as it has.

Wrote my first programs on my Commodore C64.
First program was a number guessing game where you needed to guess a number between 1 and 100. Shit had 300+ lines because I only new the if clause and the equals comparison.
I was 9.

Later a friend showed me Modula 2 and I was instantly in love with that language.

Real programming then in school (C, C++, µC assembler).

When I was in school I was in a vocational school and my program was a Computer Service and Networking class and that’s what it taught it’s pretty self explanatory. BUT we also did some programming.

I was the only one interested in programming really considering everyone else loved the hardware. But when they would ask for help it was awful.

The book we used didn’t format the python properly on the page so you can’t really tell if there’s an indent if you dont know python well (they didn’t) which is okay.

But what isn’t okay is asking me for help and SENDING ME A FUCKING VIDEO OF THE COde LIKE FUCKING WHAT THE HELL MAN THAT SHIT ISNT EVEN READABLE AND YOUR HAND IS SHAKING LIKE YOURE HAVING A STROKE AT LEAST SEND ME THE CODE OR WORST CASE A PICTURE.

When out of all my dumb classmates there's actually one that never learned much about programming before going to my school, got interested and is right now developing a library of CLI games... Of course I help him if he has any questions, and I will probably review his code after he's done.

My school try to teach programming, and that’s just a try.

Some of the dudes do not event know what a variable was.

For a second year university diploma, they don’t teach OOP, no Git, no DP, no JS, no clean code or whatever.

So at the end of the year, you’ll be able to code in procedural, no versioning, spaghetti code and a big mess in folder structure, lack of interactivity because of poor JS knowledge.

Well a codebase which makes you crying blood, literally.

Fortunately for the most curious there’s so much to learn out of the school but, damn, why are some schools so retarded ?

First time programming for work... Man in the middle student password changes. Yep that's right I'm being asked to write a program that will change students passwords on their Google accounts and local domain while also keeping a decryptable format password in a database. Granted it's much better than not letting students change their passwords at all. Plus were doing it because it will let us fix their issues while their out of school so...

started programming in high school, realized during a hardware lab in my computer science class that I wanted to be a developer.

we hade to set up a network of 5 routers, and I was the last to finish because of a typo in one config. spent an hour debugging, the frustration and eventual feeling of success made me love working with computers!

There was a lesson in HTML during high school... had to learn C++ in Uni because it is part of my curriculum in my business major. They all mattered when I got into programming 2 years ago because my current boss thought I can be a good programmer despite being not an IT graduate... so he told me to self-study

My biggest data loss and also contributed in me getting into computer stuff was when dad formatted the computer before I was able to take a backup, felt so bad at that time it had all my photos from school with friends.

So instead of crying in the corner and me not knowing they can be brought back, at least half of them, I started learning how computers work, how software work, what type of software is out there ...etc. Though that brought more work for dad having to format my mess every month of so XD

But I ended up learning a lot of new things. Then one programming class at school sent me into the dev world

A while ago I ranted about how the programming club in my school decided to start teaching programming with arduino and it was causing the students to drop out because they were finding it hard, well today I went to the club and got there 10 minutes late, yet when I arrived, thinking that they would have started without me, there was only 2 people other than the instructor and assisstant. And the funny thing is that although 90% of the class stopped going to the programming club because they were finding arduino hard, the instructor still doesn't want to teach anything else and is adamant on teaching them arduino.

I was really bad in physics and we had energy, force and all that stuff, when I got to C, my very first programming language. I learned the formulas by writing a program calculating all the stuff we learned about in school.:D

I need your help
I'm currently studying Game design and development first year in The Netherlands and I love programming but I hate designing. I was thinking about changing the course to something like Ethical Hacking or Computer science. The reason why I want to do this is that they teach us openfl until second year and I feel like I learn nothing until now.
Do you think would be better to change the course or to stay but start programming in something else? And what programming language would you recommend?
P.s. I also want to apply for a part time job/summer school to gain experience but I had no luck at all.

Let me start by sharing a bit of history about myself.

When i finished my secondary school i did not go immediately to high school. I took a year because i needed to improve some grades to enter high school more easily.
In that year i started to learn programming languages (Java).

So when i went to high school i already had a good foundation of programming logic and could make some simple games that my friends were amazed (Like Pong and tetris).
In my first year in high school, in my hometown, a photo frame builder's shop asked me if i could make a desktop program to help him calculating prices and such.

I did it in like 4 months. This was not my biggest projet so far but was the most satisfying at the end. He paid me really good money for it and i was very proud of myself.

My parents on the one side love my passion to programming (it’s actually because of my dad who introduced me to computers), but on the flip side they think that I should focus more on school - which is true, but you know... It’s hard to stop with something you like, isn’t it?

Sometimes, when it comes to programming, I feel my school curriculum is drawing me back.

Yesterday, I started taking the new programming classes in my school. I am utterly disappointed, before even teaching my classmates who are new to programming some basic python or javascript, the teacher started the class with teaching arduino and C and because of that many of my friends have since dropped the class and we are only 3 left out of an original 20.

Although some of you might say that arduino is a good introduction to programming, I believe you should teach a kid basic python or java before getting into arduino or raspi..etc

Was hiring a front-end dev once. Job ad was for basic html/css and graphic design skills. Perfect part-time job for intern or high school kid to get their feet wet. Boss sits in on interview and after I asked all the necessary questions related to position, boss starts asking him programming related questions similar to my position. (php, Mysql, apis, managing vps, custom shopping cart code )

Android app team project at school. We were creating a vocab trainer app. I did all the work my partner did literally no programming. So I asked her to at least copy some vocab list from our book. I didn't hear anything from her that day. The next day at school she comes to me with a piece of paper in her hand: "Is it ok like that?"

High school robotics team. Total of three programmers and one coach who understands programming concepts, but not syntax or anything. One programmer, putting it bluntly, is incompetent and doesn't even bother to learn anything. The other one that isn't me is apparently fucking lead programmer and team leader (IM A SENIOR. SHES A FUCKING SOPHOMORE. WTF.) and she has done about 5% of the programming this year. I've done the rest with the help of a programmer from Ford whom we bring in. All she does is tell you to do shit for her, and if you don't, she pulls the authority card on you.

And I have maybe three days, after a full day of school mind you, until I need almost every part working on the robot code. Fuck me.

Is it normal for a student (17yo, high school) to have nearly no free time? I have to leave for school at 6am and come back nearly everyday at 17 to 18pm. And since I play two instruments I'm in class for them again (+3h per week) and I'm in an orchestra (+6h rehearsal a week). So basically I finally come home at 8pm everyday and I'm so fucked that I can't do shit anymore. The only thing I'm able to do is (and in mood for) is practicing music and programming a little (personal projects and stuff). In theory I'd have free time on weekends then but I'm too tired to do shit on weekend. I stand up at 4pm and go to bed 5h later.

It all started when I got my first iPhone. I had so many ideas for any kinds of apps, so I wanted to learn how to program them. I went to school and learnt programming. (I started with Java)
While beeing at that school I taught myself Objective-C and I started to write Apps. After school I got a job as an iOS Developer.

I want to be able to learn how to program as of now but there's no good courses online that I can actually interact with and my programming elective starts next semester in school. So unless one of you Devs can give a good suggestion, I'm basically sitting here playing with the commands I do know in my Linux terminal.

Finally friday! Only a few hours left in it school and I can start programming again and catch up with all the sleep i'm missing by not getting up till 5pm...

I first got into programming when I was really young. I recall programming a square at a museum in Ohio, and after that I was hooked. I learned Logo and was on the web dev team for my elementary school while attending there. I used Hotdog HTML editor 😂

So what Text Editors do you guys use at your jobs? I'm in high school but I would like to know which Text Editors/IDEs programmers in the field use. I use sublime, VS Code for my programming and for HTML and CSS I use Brackets.

Well, i when I was 13 I thought that a bit extra knowledge before programming in school would be nice, so I bought a book about the basics of java. The books never mentioned the concept of an IDE, so I just used the windows editor and command lines.

And yes, you guessed right, the battles with the compiler were furious.

Programming in Delphi without any concepz. Done in CS class in school. Like wtf did anyone see delphi even near production?! Teacher did not know any other programming language

I played around with game scripts (in C-like syntax) and even wrote my own (well, halfway) before learning some Java at school. Had a bad internship and decided to waste a few years by studying engineering, where I failed everything but programming. Before getting kicked out I exmatriculated myself then I kinda came to the conclusion of "How about doing something that seems quite natural to me?".

Computer society in High school

So while I was in high school, I got excited over the computer society because I thought I could learn a lot of programming stuff from them. I joined and quickly realized that that was a big mistake. They were teaching stuff that you learn from the computer classes in grammar school, eg MS Office, email clients.

I started to learn programming myself through learning online, eventually being the best student in the society. The teacher in charge chose me to teach the class next year, but it cannot be too advance as people would get bored and confused.

Why does classes have to be like this, cannot be too hard. Has to be something that clearly everyone knows. This kind of bullshit has to stop.

If you use a Windows system for work and have the permissions to, I highly recommend you learn Powershell if you haven't already.

I've only started learning it a few months, but it's already improved my workflow immensely since it's a decent bit more powerful than batch scripts, but not as 'heavy handed' for small tasks as a programming language like C# feels sometimes.

I kinda regret ignoring it for so long, I noticed it installed on my high school laptop and toyed with it a bit outside of class, but then gravitated more towards python which I can't use at my current job. really wish high school me had the attention span to learn both back then.

A few months into teaching myself programming (I started with ActionScript cause it was readily available on the school computers) I realized all these games that I play, and that millions of others play, I could make.
I then started remaking pokemon red in flash which I never finished.

Doh! Programming eats away most of my time that I actually should use for school... :D

I'm currently a student in college. First semester of first year for the first 'real' programming course the school has offered, and we realized that they have told everyone to store their server login info in a connectvars.php file. 45 minutes and three tests later we had a script that was capable of outputting the username / password combo for any account on the schools server who had taken that course, ever.

I don't know if I can be developer anymore. After I went to high school (one of the best in Poland) everything seems to collapse. My grades are poor. Especially on math and physics, but surprisingly everything Computer Science related is better than average. I also know how to code and I don't struggle with math used while programming. Heck, I even made my first game at the age of 10 in Visual Basic. I just love programming, computer science, etc, but after I went to high school I just don't know anymore...

On stackoverflow, I saw a new user post a comment as an answer, probably just because they had not enough reputation to post a comment. Before I could finish a helpful comment about the situation, that post got downvoted -5 and deleted because the user considered his own abilities "shitty" which was considered an illegal swear word by stackoverflow. Stackoverflow is like the Sunday school of programming, oh my ️🤦‍♂️😠

I was around 12. My mother just took a new position as Algorithmic and programming teacher (Mathematics before) for high school seniors. (Around 16-17 in Russia back in a day).

So sometimes, I waited for her after school, listening (just a bit) what she was teaching.

Then one day I was waiting while she was giving an exam of 2 hours to seniors (End of year exam). In 20 minutes, I doodled a thing on a piece of paper and showed my mother. I was correct on all questions and all flow diagrams (Was not called like this back in a day).

From this moment, I knew, programming and logic are for me.

At the end of high school (So I was 17), I received the collective message from most girls in my class saying : “ You felt in love with computers and ignored us”. They were right ☹, I realised it way later.

I struggle with a single decision on a daily basis: do I leave copies of my work at my school for future students to reference, or do I let them struggle just like I did when I ventured down the path of programming?

I want to know of the educational systems around the world because I think that my country's educational system is the worst over them all.
In my country schools literally turn students into books & their worth is overwhelmingly decided by their marks. Because of that system students don't try to learn anything outside of school program. Currently I am suffering from that because I can't keep up with my school program & learning programming & algorithms for competive programming at the same time.

Fell in love with it in high school but I had a strong bond with computers and technology early on. Done some C programming there. Had a project in ASP, Access and JavaScript. Old times 😃

Needed to create an app for android for a school project so we tried xamarin because c#. After 2 weeks of crying and breaking we decided to switch java. Now we only hate programming in java but at least we it works

Have classes and exams on Saturday and Sunday, great, my life's over

Our programming classes are fucking DISMAL uuugh... Okay so we have four technology classes: Tech Exploration, Coding 1, Coding 2, and Intro to CS (a 'high school' level class)... So this means a fuck ton of kids in programming classes, mostly because I WANNA MAKE MINCERAFT AND BE A KEWL BOI LIKE GAME DEV BUT I'M ALSO A FUCKING IDIOT AND WILL NOT LEARN ANYTHING YAAAAAAY but that's a mood and so there's a fucking tidal wave of dumb kids in these classes. So right we're dealing with like 80 kids per class period. Sorry if I'm repeating myself but there are a FUCKTON of students. Now, we have... wait for it... ONE FUCKING TEACHER. ONE. I fucking swear this district does not give a SINGLE SHIT about possibly THE SINGLE FUCKING MOST IMPORTANT SUBJECT WHYYYYYY... Okay so the teacher is kinda overworked as fuck lol. She can't really teach eighty kids at once so she mostly gives us exercises from websites but when she can she teaches us shit herself and actually knows a good bit about her field of study. She's usually pretty grumpy, understandably, but if you ask her a good question that makes her think you can see the passion there lol. So anyways that's a mood. Now at the other school it's even worse. They have this new asshole as a teacher that knows NOTHING about ANYTHING IT IS SO FUCKING REDICULOUS OH MY UUUUUGH... THEY STILL DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT A FUCKING LOOP IS LIKE OKAY YOU'VE BEEN TEACHING PROGRAMMING FOR A YEAR AND YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE TEACHING IT AT THAT DISTRICT SO MAYBE YOU SHOULD AT LEAST FUCKING TRY WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU... so he just makes them do shit from a website and obviously can't do half of the shit he assigns it's so fucking sad... I swear this district is supposed to be good but maybe not for the ONE THING I WANT IT TO BE GOOD FOR. Funny story: in elementary school once I wrote down school usernames for people I didn't really know and shared them a google doc that said "you have been hacked make a more secure password buddy" etc etc and made them the owner and these dull shits report it to the principal... So I'm in the principles office... Just a fucking dumb elementary school kid lol and the principal is like hAcKiNg Is BaD yOu ShOuLd NoT dO iT and I'm like how did you know it was me... so he goes on to say some bullshit about 'digital footprint' and 'tracing' me to it... he obviously has no clue what he's saying but anyways afterwards he points to where it says last change made by MY SCHOOL ACCOUNT... HOW DULL CAN YOU FUCKING POSSIBLY BE IT WAS FROM MY ACCOUNT THAT LITERALLY PROVED THAT I DID --NOT-- 'HACK' INTO THEIR ACCOUNT YOU DUMB FUCK. Okay so basically my school is a burning pile of garbage but it's better than most apparently but it's GARBAGE MY GOD... Please fucking tell me it gets better...

Why am I the only student that others in IT/programming class look up to when it comes down to basic c++ programming??!

It's not *that* hard. Just read the book provided to you by school, goddammit! Just because I can write and use more than one dimension in an array DOES NOT make me any better in prigramming!(or maybe it does, idk)

But, as much as I hate those lads, deep within myself I want to help them get as best of scores in finals as they can. Here's hoping they come around to realise that and pay attention when I try to give them tips...

When I was in 5th grade, my school had bought few computers (I don't remember on which OS they were running back in 1999) and they'd installed Logo on it.

For those who are not familiar with Logo, it was a programming language for educational purpose. The main highlight of this programming language was, it had a graphical on-screen cursor called "Turtle". Users had to type in commands to make this cursor move on the screen. Like "Right 90" would turn the cursor by 90 degrees.

This was my first official exposure to a computer.

Any one here have a degree in Electrical Engineering or Electronics Engineering? I'm thinking about going back to school, but I'm not sure it's worth the money since I live in the US. (cries in over-expensive education costs)

I do a lot infrastructure work and some super basic programming/scripting but I think I really want to get into hardware maybe zone in on either RF or take a stab at amps/effects pedals for guitar and bass.

as an aside, I'm not trying to go back to school for job or career related reasons, I just want to noodle with stuff and maybe create my own circuitry for stuff.

My school didn't have any programming or CS classes, so I started to learn python online my junior year. I thought it was interesting so I declared a CS major in University. Now I'm about to graduate knowing java, c++, Ruby on rails, c#

It's been a while since i stopped programming.....
It's been so busy with all the school work/assignments/ and the most important part is that school ends at 10pm, arrive home at 11pm, prepare for tomorrow school stuff, sleep at 2am, wake up at 7am next morning, and again ends at 10pm 5 days a week...
It is exhausting, but I am getting used to this routine.
Studying my own programming skills or working on a side project? Not sure when to do it... The only way to continue studying is at breaks at school, or sleep less and study....
But it is impossible....
I have some great projects that are waiting to go out to the world, to list a few:
- cloud gaming
- cloud storage with live streaming
- complete school schedule management
- home automation framework in dotnet
- deepfakes and ai image generation algorithm (~18 months of training till now)
- game cheat engine (20GB total omfg ^^)
- and more
and I don't have time to finish it. lol
I think it will see the bright world after 3 years of high school... By then, my projects will be ancient, probably....

TIme is really short.
24 hours equally, but feels like 8 hours a day....

Should I abandon the project rn and focus on studying? (probably should)
or should i sell the project or open source it?

Also, how do you manage your time between work(study) and side projects (especially big ones)?

So, in "learning" programming I took some classes in school and got a start in the academic sense. But, as professors would assign projects above the position of the class I would have to learn elsewhere. So I attribute my learning to code to Stack Overflow and Google searches.

I couldnt play games in lan at school, started using ubuntu, then everything escalated and now im pretty much programming or doing something on my computer related to that.

Man i fucking love my current living situation. The people are so fucking nice here, my neighbours almost all go into the same school as me and are therefore technical versed/share the same interests. My School is super awesome due to some of the teachers, where you can learn so much. Really starting to have a passion fo programming although it takes up so much of my freetime, i nearly don't do anything else anymore but I want to learn as much as possible.

It's a super nice day even though I have to study maths all day but fuck it! That doesn't stress me!

And all it really boils down to is how you perceive problems and the like. Either you let it get to you or you don't. Now everyone have a nice day :)

In elementary school, when I got my first computer (a 286 with b/w monitor and a whopping 8mhz), I discovered that a .bat file was nothing more than a set of instructions.

So my first "programs" where nothing more than .bat files. Then, at summer camp, one of the instructors noticed I was kind of a nerd, so he introduced me to QBasic. Later on, a friend of my mother showed me Turbo Pascal 6.0. So I was already creating games when I left elementary school.

Then, on secondary school, I stopped most of my programming stuff and was mostly interested in drawing and making music.

But, on college I rediscovered programming with Flash, HTML, PHP and Director. This was around the time that AS2 and PHP4 were still cool.

Later on, in university, I became nerd full on, but still the main focus on web development.

I checked something and the school I want to apply to for Computer Management (basically the paper I need to prove I’m a dev) requires me to do PE.... Like, come the FUCK ON. How am I gonna learn stuff (and get retold the same shit I know since I’m 10) about PROGRAMMING if I’m doing SPORTS?! WHY?! I can barely get up the damn stairs without my knees fucking up and being out of breath.... fml

So... school is about to begin again...
Honestly I'm both excited and intimidated about it. It's my last year in high school, and I still haven't decided what to do after it. I guess I'll go to an university, and possibly continue with my conservatory... I want to do both things, hoping that the weight won't crush me.
