I’m new to programming. I first learned G-Code and M-Code for CNC machines and being a machinist got boring, so now I’m in School for computer science. But I swear, the amount of motherfuckers that act like they are the programming gods and they know everything there is to know just because they’ve been a programmer for so and so amount of years just grinds my gears. They act like some knowledge is important while other knowledge is useless, and generalize it and push that belief on everyone. But fail to realize that some people, such as myself, just love computers in every facet. I don’t give a damn how many years of programming experience you have and how many people you’ve taught. If you act like a stuck up know it all and walk around like your shit don’t stink, I wouldn’t work with you even if I had the same amount of experience as you.

I remember when I was just a child, 6 or 7 I think, my uncle bought a computer and it was a magical thing for me.

So a recruiter called me for the Mobile App Dev position just to asked me wether I am familiar with "CODING IN XML"?

Not really a rant and I'm only a beginner/hobbyist, but for a few months I've been active in a local gamedev club where I recently managed the courage to approach a much more experienced (5+ years) programmer.

We managed to have a good 30 minute chat (despite not using the same programming languages) and he told me "I really appreciate talking to someone who actually understands programming and what they're talking about!"

It felt like a pretty big milestone on my path to game development, at least it feels like I know more than I care to admit to myself.

I've been in the programming world for like a year and a half. I've had relatively notable achievements - first place at hackathons, completed kinda remarkable projects, I even got to teach programming to interns at a leading communications company in my country. However, I still feel like a beginner. I'm not confident enough to contribute to projects. Maybe it's because I'm self taught, but is this common? Last year, I had an inevitable programming session while I was drunk. I didn't struggle at all. I programmed like composing a poem. Btw I have been programming for last 18 years and never enjoyed this much after college programming labs.
Since then I've been drinking before complicated logics and never disappointed.

Tl;dr. Programming is fun, but programming is unparalleled when drunk.

I'm just a student, but I always feel like a badass when the class treats me like almost like a teacher when it comes to programming.

Our actual programming teacher is new, so she doesn't always teach well (don't get me wrong, she's nice and I do know my place as a student) so my classmates usually approaches me when they need clarification or they got an error on their code. Makes me feel useful :D

As time goes on.. I see my friends, whom I studied programming with, just stop learning new things.
They think, or just behave, like they know everything worth knowing.
You can't talk to them about programming outside of work anymore. They just say that programming is "something you do at work".
I used to look-up to those people, and learn a lot from them. Now, they don't care enough to Google "what's this Rust thing people talk about?".

Programming on paper (any benefits?)

For the programming exams we have at our university we have to write code on paper (like full code, not pseudo).

I feel that writing code on paper really limits my ability to express my programming knowledge, in comparison to writing code on the computer.

However, I cannot think of a real benefit of doing so. I mean most programmers (if I may generalize) have bad handwriting. Which is a loss-loss situation for both the examinees and professors (who have to read the exams).

Are there any benefits for writing code on paper?

I long for the day I get a job with an actual developer team, where I can do things like getting my code reviewed or pair programming or being forced to write better tests.

Working as the only developer (or a team of 2) sucks :(

Why am I so stupid? I still don't understand programming after three years of studying on my own. I even went to a programming boot camp and got a c.s Degree. Just tell me that I'm not a fit for programming so I can quit. It seems to me like I don't know anything, I feel like I can't learn for shit. What am I missing, why can't I write code on my own? Why do I always need people held my hand? Why I don't understand anything?

I read books on programming. The thing I most like about programming books is that they allow you to learn about topics that you would have never have thought to explore. When people look things up online, they tend to search very specific things, most times actual code. The internet is an incredible source for developers, don't get me wrong. But books allow you to learn about programming in a conceptual way which in turn will make learning new languages easier and allow your understanding of the languages you already know to be deeper.

so the other day i was programming and suddenly i wanted to learn haskell. (i don't know why it hit me so suddenly, maybe because it's a 'pure' functional programming language and these 2 terms i knew nothing about)

and to be honest it's really hard coming from an imperative programming language (C/C++, yes, i know they are different in their ways). it's like learning to program again! you really have to get a different mindset and for me honestly it's hard to grasp the idea that 'variables' are immutable! like, that's soooo weird it still stucks to me. for example how did they define the max or min function without using a while loop? what are monads?

Yesterday was Google CodeJam's Kickstart event ( or something like that ).
Participated in competitive programming for the first time. It was kinda fun I guess...
Nope I still hate competitive programming. I like being a laid back programmer who develops in his own pace.

On the positive note, I started using goto in C++ because of it and created a better Graph library than I had before 🤗🤗

Is the way people solve problems intrinsic to the native language they learned growing up? Can the shape of our thoughts be optimal for solving certain kinds of problems? Like sentence structure, grammar, etc.

If the pattern of thoughts a language promotes can help us solve problems. Then is there a spoken language that can help promote solving computer science problems?

I know I have to work to think differently to program in different styles of programming. I wonder if we can learn from different spoken languages patterns of logic that are applicable to engineering.

Mathematics, while not a spoken language, has helped me re-frame things in programming. I think programming has also helped in other areas. Like using binary search to find the end of a pipe in the ground.

I hate programming tutorials for a complicated language like c++ that are dedicated to absolute beginners of programming. If you've never coded before, why are you trying to learn c++?

Hearing "do this , do this like this, that like that" every day removes passion from programming I had before. Now I'm starting to get deeper into javascript and to learn backend, and I'm working on a CMS with NodeJS and MySql backend, and vanilla JS on the client side. So far I have only experience in oop and I would really like to know some reasons why it is better.

Apparently I failed to provide enough reason why I would like to do my internship with them.
And I didnt have any affinity with programming according to them.

Im not a great talker assholes. But im good at programming.
How would you even know my affinity to programming? Because I dont have any personal projects running?

When you start learning a programming language it seems like I will be the master of it, when you actually start doing it,It fucks you well.

Ban visual programming programs, like scratch after the fist month introduce them to enhanced Google search strings and let them code on the command line going from imperative, over functional to object oriented programming styles using languages suited for the current style. Not like using Java from the get go. I hated it, waiting until everyone got to the point where they kind of understood the logic but failed at using correct syntax and efficient coding styles.

Anyone here worked a whole lot with low level programming?

I have always worked with high level languages like Python and C++, but I’ve also had an interest in working with embedded systems, real close to the metal.

Any directions on where I should go to start learning low level programming? Sites, languages, etc?

I'm currently studying Game design and development first year in The Netherlands and I love programming but I hate designing. I was thinking about changing the course to something like Ethical Hacking or Computer science. The reason why I want to do this is that they teach us openfl until second year and I feel like I learn nothing until now.
Do you think would be better to change the course or to stay but start programming in something else? And what programming language would you recommend?
P.s. I also want to apply for a part time job/summer school to gain experience but I had no luck at all.

Does anyone know a good book for learning PHP? I want to know more about back-end development and would like some recommendations. I've been programming mostly in Java before and also have experience with SQL, HTML and CSS.

If anyone could suggest a book or any kind of advice I would really appreciate it. I've found some interesting ones online like "PHP & MySQL Web Development – by Luke Welling & Laura Thompson", but would like to hear out first people who know more about this programming language.

My mum was programming at high school. It was COBOL, but she never used it again. So thats how she lost every sense for programming. Even like 2 months earlier, she thought I am just playing games and watching videos, but then we finally had a talk and she understands now. I am happy.

I hate mostly all of my inability to focus and the fact that I like programming. Surprisingly, they aren't a good match. Im trying to actually learn Java and react native. Anyone have any solutions for quick and effective ways to learn?

I like being diverse in what I can program. I like software development, web development, networking programming, I’m starting to get into embedding programming and using lower level languages like C/C++ (I’ve used them before but not for anything practical) and I enjoy the diversity. It makes me feel good knowing I can extend my programming knowledge.

Also I like having project ideas lined up so I know what I want to do next. And if I don’t finish one I know is easy but I can’t figure out, I CANT MOVE ON! I have to finish it. It’ll drive me fucking nuts.

I need a new hobby. Programming doesn't excite me anymore, at least not how it did a couple of years back. I'd like to get into robotics and stuff, but everything's expensive where I live. I'd like to get into cars, also too expensive where I live. I like playing video games, but I suck at them and they bring me no feeling of having accomplished something. Sports? Suck at them too. I've been trying to diversify programming languages I know.

It's been rough; I just don't like a lot of the high level programming languages and low level ones are often tough to learn to for someone without formal CS background.

So I learned C next and I was like "eh, programming is kinda hard actually".
So I learned to program rather than learn a language, got back to C until I was comfortable with it.

i never knew id reach that point when i need to take a break from programming and everything that has been causing me so much stress for the past few days. and to be honest, it actually feels great to be focused on only one thing instead of stressing out on different projects and debugging them all at once.

programming is like a magnet for. that magnetic force is growing stronger day by day and im being pulled closer to it. im happy about it except for some occasions when i get too stressed.

wow, to think about it , I have not been really 'excited' about stuff for last few years...

Does it sometimes feel like the logic in your mind is reflected by the career path you have chosen?

Meaning, for me, when it comes to decision making, or when trying to understand an idea, I usually black out when a variable in my mind does not make sence.

Sometimes it feels like programming logic has taken over how I think.

I struggle with a single decision on a daily basis: do I leave copies of my work at my school for future students to reference, or do I let them struggle just like I did when I ventured down the path of programming?

Oh boy I haven't been programming the whole week so far, just googling and observing my boss to know what's going on. I hate days like these. The life of an intern.

Is it weird that I hold a high degree of respect for every sector in programming. When we talk about front-end, back-end in websites to the GUI support and logical end in desktop applications to cloud-based microservices, I respect clean, swift, and agile developers who who a structural mindset. For the founding fathers of assembly to high-programming languages like c all the way to high-high level programming languages like C#, JavaScript, Python, I respect them and thank them for their time and dedication in relatively stable libraries. I also thank the creators of OOP and FP as well as the developers that make great use of these paradigms. I come to realization that no one wants to fuck shit up; the great engineers of our past wanted to build some legit, non-trash programming tools, and we can't bash them for that. Respect, courteously critique, and build applications and programming tools to a standard that someone in the future would admire and be grateful for.

I would like to learn how to better automate workflows. I find it fascinating that you can control one program with another. Especially GUI apps. I have automated apps before to reduce human error and boring data entry work. It would be amazing to take this to a new level. Perhaps even automate specific programming work.

Machines programming machines would be fascinating as well.

I keep diving into Racket (my first lisp-like), I often get totally overwhelmed by macros.

You don't know what power means until you program a programming language.

Pair programming. I noticed my productivity and motivation skyrocketed when I found about VS LiveShare, so now I share all of my code sessions. even if nobody's there, i still work more because I like showing my progress to others.

When you feel like giving up on it all and just going off the grid... I've been programming too long. I need a fuckin' break.

I’m being taught some network programming, and my friend/teacher is helping me on the project to teach me, and I’m learning a lot but I don’t feel like I’ve personally done a lot.

I don't know whether this has been asked before but is it normal for devs to copy/paste code? I feel like half of the programming I do is copy pasting code. I mean, I know what I'm doing. I'm just lazy to type it out.

Even though I’ve been working through a C# book about WinForms, which I’m half way done with, I still don’t feel like I’m working productively and I hate the negative feeling it’s giving me.

It’s going to sound stupid but it’s making me feel like I’m not spending enough time programming even though I’ve been programming quite a bit this week. I mean the small apps aren’t practical they’re just for learning how it all works but still. Im not reading the book for learning the programming logic it’s for the WinForms knowledge.

I think it’s just that I want to make progress on my main project and just have a 4+ hour coding session.

In university we have to code using ruby. It's likely the most useless and ugly piece of shit programming language I have ever seen (apart from VB). Why can't we use something useful like python?
