Hey everyone,
First off, a Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates, happy holidays to everyone, and happy almost-new-year!
Tim and I are very happy with the year devRant has had, and thinking back, there are a lot of 2017 highlights to recap. Here are just a few of the ones that come to mind (this list is not exhaustive and I'm definitley forgetting stuff!):
- We introduced the devRant supporter program (devRant++)! (https://devrant.com/rants/638594/...). Thank you so much to everyone who has embraced devRant++! This program has helped us significantly and it's made it possible for us to mantain our current infrustructure and not have to cut down on servers/sacrifice app performance and stability.
- We added avatar pets (https://devrant.com/rants/455860/...)
- We finally got the domain devrant.com thanks to @wiardvanrij (https://devrant.com/rants/938509/...)
- The first international devRant meetup (Dutch) with organized by @linuxxx and was a huge success (https://devrant.com/rants/937319/... + https://devrant.com/rants/935713/...)
- We reached 50,000 downloads on Android (https://devrant.com/rants/728421/...)
- We introduced notif tabs (https://devrant.com/rants/1037456/...), which make it easy to filter your in-app notifications by type
- @AlexDeLarge became the first devRant user to hit 50,000++ (https://devrant.com/rants/885432/...), and @linuxxx became the first to hit 75,000++
- We made an April Fools joke that got a lot of people mad at us and hopefully got some laughs too (https://devrant.com/rants/506740/...)
- We launched devDucks!! (https://devducks.com)
- We got rid of the drawer menu in our mobile apps and switched to a tab layout
- We added the ability to subscribe to any user's rants (https://devrant.com/rants/538170/...)
- Introduced the post type selector (https://devrant.com/rants/850978/...) (which will be used for filtering - more details below)
- Started a bug/feature tracker GitHub repo (https://github.com/devRant/devRant)
- We did our first ever live stream (https://youtube.com/watch/...)
- Added an awesome all-black theme (devRant++) (https://devrant.com/rants/850978/...)
- We created an "active discussions" screen within the app so you can easily find rants with booming discussions!
- Thanks to the suggestion of many community members, we added "scroll to bottom" functionality to rants with long comment threads to make those rants more usable
- We improved our app stability and set our personal record for uptime, and we also cut request times in half with some database cluster upgrades
- Awesome new community projects: https://devrant.com/projects (more will be added to the list soon, sorry for the delay!)
- A new landing page for web (https://devrant.com), that was the first phase of our web overhaul coming soon (see below)
Even after all of this stuff, Tim and I both know there is a ton of work to do going forward and we want to continue to make devRant as good as it can be. We rely on your feedback to make that happen and we encourage everyone to keep submitting and discussing ideas in the bug/feature tracker (https://github.com/devRant/devRant).
We only have a little bit of the roadmap right now, but here's some things 2018 will bring:
- A brand new devRant web app: we've heard the feedback loud and clear. This is our top priority right now, and we're happy to say the completely redesigned/overhauled devRant web experience is almost done and will be released in early 2018. We think everyone will really like it.
- Functionality to filter rants by type: this feature was always planned since we introduced notif types, and it will soon be implemented. The notif type filter will allow you to select the types of rants you want to see for any of the sorting methods.
- App stability and usability: we want to dedicate a little time to making sure we don't forget to fix some long-standing bugs with our iOS/Android apps. This includes UI issues, push notification problems on Android, any many other small but annoying problems. We know the stability and usability of devRant is very important to the community, so it's important for us to give it the attention it deserves.
- Improved profiles/avatars: we can't reveal a ton here yet, but we've got some pretty cool ideas that we think everyone will enjoy.
- Private messaging: we think a PM system can add a lot to the app and make it much more intuitive to reach out to people privately. However, Tim and I believe in only launching carefully developed features, so rest assured that a lot of thought will be going into the system to maximize privacy, provide settings that make it easy to turn off, and provide security features that make it very difficult for abuse to take place. We're also open to any ideas here, so just let us know what you might be thinking.
There will be many more additions, but those are just a few we have in mind right now.
We've had a great year, and we really can't thank every member of the devRant community enough. We've always gotten amazingly positive feedback from the community, and we really do appreciate it. One of the most awesome things is when some compliments the kindness of the devRant community itself, which we hear a lot. It really is such a welcoming community and we love seeing devs of all kind and geographic locations welcomed with open arms.
2018 will be an important year for devRant as we continue to grow and we will need to continue the momentum. We think the ideas we have right now and the ones that will come from community feedback going forward will allow us to make this a big year and continue to improve the devRant community.
Thanks everyone, and thanks for your amazing contributions to the devRant community!
Looking forward to 2018,
- David and Tim48 -
A note on devRant community etiquette. I've seen some behavior lately that I want to just mention since it goes against the rules of our community. We've specifically built moderation tools into upvoting and downvoting, and that is how all content should be moderated.
Commenting on rants that you don't think should be posted only gives them more exposure and unfortunately at times people trying to moderate content via comments and rants have gotten abusive towards other members. On the contrary, I've yet to see any of the people these select few members accuse of "ruining the community" act hostile towards anyone.
So with that said, I wanted to make sure this policy is visible, because commenting on other people's rants, especially in a hostile way to stop them from posting, is bannable and we really don't want to see it. Like mentioned before, that's what downvoting is for and it's much more effective since it doesn't boost the content like adding a comment does.
We take content quality seriously and while we haven't been able to eliminate reposts completely, we've made a lot of progress. For directly reposted content, we added the repost detector (https://devrant.io/rants/425054/...) and are still working to improve that and appreciate any feedback/ideas for it.
Like any community on the internet, devRant will always have some reposts and it will always have some content you really don't like. That's what comes along with being an open platform with very little moderation. We get requests to moderate more heavily, but we don't like censoring recent rants and don't plan to do that.
Most of the times people who repost content or an image didn't realize it was already posted. Not everyone uses recent sort and almost always they have no ill intent.
Anyway, feel free to let me know if you have any questions and feedback is always welcome.45 -
Hey everyone,
Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates, happy holidays to everyone, and happy almost-new-year!
Tim and I wanted to reflect on the year devRant has had, and looking back, there are a lot of awesome things that happened in 2018 that we are very thankful for. Here are just a few of the ones that we thought of (this list is not exhaustive and I'm definitley forgetting stuff, so please comment about those!):
- After nearly a year in the making, the completely overhauled devRant web version was launched (https://devrant.com/rants/1255714/...)
- @linuxxx became the first devRant user to hit 100,000++! (https://devrant.com/rants/1157415/...)
- We once again pulled off the greatest April fools joke everrrr (https://devrant.com/rants/1311206/...)
- @trogus started making awesome devComics and http://devcomics.com was launched
- We added a feature to allow rant filtering by post type (https://devrant.com/rants/1354275/...)
- We made it so avatars could have expressions! (https://devrant.com/rants/1563683/...)
- We had a booth at TechDay New York and got to meet some devRant users! (https://devrant.com/rants/1394067/...)
- We made major backend architectural improvements - including spinning up a special high-powered-CPU web server to handle avatar creation and make the creation process much faster (https://devrant.com/rants/1370938/...)
- App stability: mainly Android - we fixed crashes, did a push-notif overhaul, and tried to continue making the apps better and more stable
- A record amount of devRant meetups were held, and we couldn't be more proud about that, and we thank every person who organized one! (just a few: https://devrant.com/rants/1588218/... https://devrant.com/rants/1884724/... https://devrant.com/rants/1683365/... https://devrant.com/rants/1922950/...)
We had a busy year, and despite some things going on for us personally and some setbacks around those, we think this was a very productve year for devRant and that we are going in the right direction. We're continuing to constantly evaluate feedback from members of the community to decide where to take the app next. We're fully committed to improving the devRant community in 2019 and we have a lot of ideas about how we can do that. We're working on some things, but we're not really announcing them yet, so please sit tight for those :) In the meantime, feel free to let us know what you'd like to see improved/added the most as we always like to get updated feedback from the community.
As always, thank you everyone, and thanks for your amazing contributions to the devRant community!
Looking forward to 2019,
- David and Tim26 -

Hey everyone,
For about the last 24 hours, there was unfortunately an issue with the algo feed where scrolling did not show more rants. This has now been fixed.
One of our background queues stopped processing for some reason which caused rants to not properly get marked as read for algo.
If you notice any other issues with this, please let me know. Thanks!11 -
We just launched our new stories feature! If you go to the "stories" section, you'll see only rants that are over 70 words and you'll be able to easily enjoy the best long-form rants on devRant!
Just to clarify - all functionality is remaining the same. The main feed will still show all rants. Stories just makes it easier to find fun rants that involve more detailed stories/ranting and helps give them some more exposure.
We hope you enjoy! Feel free to comment here if you have any questions/suggestions about this.10 -
New devRant Cartoon! (https://youtube.com/watch/...) Touches on the "fun" that is family tech support. I think some of you can relate... This one is inspired by a rant by DotM (https://www.devrant.io/rants/326625). Enjoy!10

After giving 1000 posts a ++ its time to say hello :)
It's a really nice community and I already spent some hours reading rants. Thanks for this great place.15 -
Hey everyone,
Unfortunately earlier tonight some code was deployed with functionality only compatible with the new version of the devRant app that will be coming out early this week. It caused some weird issues where normal rants would be rendered as collabs causing them to not show up correctly.
This happened when going to rants from the feed (fixed earlier) and going to rants from push notifications (fixed a little while ago).
If you notice any of that behavior still occurring please let me know, thanks!
Apologies for the weirdness and missed notif activity for those who were impacted.7 -
A request to all of you posting these feel-good rants about your past teachers.
Maybe shoot them a message to tell them how much you appreciated them, teaching is a very rough and thankless job for the most part.
It's funny how much it meant to some of my past teachers...4 -
To everyone that writes their rants and comments as code like
Console.writeline("something something")
Stop, get some help.
You don't need to prove that you know how to print a string okay ?16 -
Looking at the amount of Samsung Note 7 rants, I have to restore the balance with some classic Iphone bashing ;)4
-
There should be a name for rants about fake stories. Like the ones you read and can smell some bs going on. I suggest frants.3
-
Reading some of the wk50 rants makes my blood run cold. brrrrr. They're terrifying.
While my story goes just like this.
Didn't know our manager(let's call him R) messaged us in our group chat that he won't make it to office for that day.
My account replied "Let's have moment of silence for those who left us. R, you will be missed. :'( Thank you for everything.".
I didn't notice the message until lunch time and my co-devs (with much back-slapping and laughing) told me I'm a gem. -_-
I just went to get some coffee, forgot to lock my unit and came back a murderer.
AND It was only my 2nd month on the job.6 -
Hello world, I'm a 20 year-old CS student and I've been following you all from the shadows for a year now. I finally decided to join you, so here I am! I've got to say that I love this app and the community, so I'm happy to be part of it now. I'm currently on holidays, but I can't wait to share some good ol' rants once the uni starts again!

Once upon a time while browsing his Instagram, a young and inexperienced boy found a magic realm called devRant.
He decided to hop on the cyberweb of interconected computers, aka. the Internet and found the gate to the magic realm.
Timidly he took a step forward and found himself surrounded by strange structures called Rants and Stories.
No knowing what to do, he now roams in this new and strange realm looking for some guidence and perhaps even friendship.27 -
Some of you might have seen it already, those who didn't just have to.
One of the best rants I've read lately.
"Our security auditor is an idiot. How do I give him the information he wants?"
https://serverfault.com/questions/...4 -
So I was trying to go to sleep and my phone buzzed around 11:35 and it said someone commented on one of my rants so i went and read it, checked out how high my score was. Read a few rants...then a few more...wrote some comments...maybe one or two more...its almost 1am...6

You may know about my dumb CTO, if not, read here: https://devrant.io/rants/854361/...
Anyway, the dumbass emailed me this weekend asking “what is big data?”
So I replied: “...it’s when you use a large font in your code...”
He thanked me. I bet he will be at some presentation somewhere and will reference using large fonts in an IDE!!!10 -
Can we, please, put some substance into our rants? Over the course of the last weeks the amount of rants of the type "%NAME% %SWEARWORDS%" has increased tremendously. You want tell everyone that (for example) Windows can go fuck itself? Great. But why? What is the story behind you're enragement?
Please make this place more fun to browse by sharing stories. Not just a random amount of names and swearwords.4 -

Hey everyone!
I've recently made a devrant API for python!
It is available for use in your very own projects!
I am planning on using this on another project, a python devrant CLI program, inspired from a collab using JavaScript.
Here is the link: https://github.com/coolq1000/...
It is very basic with functionality, not much beyond getting rants by index starting at zero, or getting all rants available by skip, limit.
Has some documentation in the readme.
Have fun!6 -
Hi!
I developed a little script in Ruby to collect some analytics from the rants posted in the last 24 hours!
In the last 24 hours there were...
-193 Rants posted
-Total words in those rants: 8693
This gives us an average of 45, 01 words per rant.15 -
<rant about devRant>
Can people please stop posting images stolen from someone else trying to get some points. I'm here to read rants and other interesting things you encounter while working with software development, not look at memes. Thank you.

Hey everyone.
New to DevRant. I've been reading some rants, seems like the perfect place for me to be. Feels good to be a part of the community.23 -
A new type of dev hiring strategy:
I'll pick some selected rants from devRant and show it to the candidate on a white board. Their reaction will decide their chances of hiring ;-)1 -
Shared devRant to some of my Chinese speaking dev partners.
Partner: It is interesting to know that dev rants are language independent.
Me: Developers talk in programming languages, which are the same throughout the world. -
Stackify published a fun devRant article in their blog where I highlighted some of my favorite rants: http://stackify.com/co-founder-davi...
Just to note - the rants in the article are in no particular order, it was too hard to actually order them so it's just random pretty much. I also unfortunately didn't have a full list to go trough, so I'm sure I missed a bunch of great ones. I gathered all of these pretty quickly, but they are still some of my favorites, amongst many others that are not included.3 -
So i just wanted to say thank you. Everyone on devrant.
It became a safe place for me to rant about stuff, getting feedback from awesome people and so much more. Also i learned some things on dR that making my (dev)life better!
Most important devrant is making me feel way better, when you read about people having the same struggles.
But not only the rants are making this awesome. Its every single one of you.
Thank you, stay awesome!2 -
I don't want no sticker and no stressball, i just want to read some dev rants and design my devRant avatar3
-
Yo, is this devrant or spamspace???
Like, do you even fucking work, mates? Are you a dev? How doesn't a fucking legacy code piss you off on a daily basis? What are all the ways you want to respond to your customer's/PM's abuse? Does your lead dev even know jackshit?
Where did all your quality rants go? Why do you all sound like second graders writing essays for school? Have some passion for your job, and hatred for the incompetence for others!
Now, go produce some quality rants! Funny ones too! Bonus points if it's angry-funny.20 -
Been seeing a few rants on favorite music, so thought I'd share my spotify playlist called Developer $hell I made a few years ago :) Some of you devs might like it.
https://open.spotify.com/user/...9 -
Basically finished the notification filter script* already, but there's still some small bugs I want to get to first, so in the meanwhile I created a "subscribe" button script**, that simply posts a pin emoji and "Subscribing to the comments".
On desktop I usually used to post a dot to subscribe to rant comments, but with the new people wave, that was often misunderstood (you emoji users won the evolution of comment subscribing, RIP dot) I'm sure some other people that use the webapp more often, will find it useful too.

Guys i got 1000++!!!
It's not that i'm special now.
Just more special than others.
Oh I remember the old times when devRant veterans like @linuxxx or @Alice posted their first rants and I welcomed them!
I even remember that night I gave @dfox the idea of creating this app! "That's stupid.", he said. "If this app should be succesful I owe you some special kind of duck we will produce for some reasons I don't know yet!", he said.
But for real now: Thanks everybody for being a part of this and for bringing me so much joy!8 -
What's the most stupid/raging way you broke a device ?
Me? I fell asleep in my bed, while reading some rants.. on my fucking phone and broke it while sleeping on it18 -
When my comment on someone's rant gets enough +1's for some sweet stickers, but none of my rants had enough 🤔😥3
-
If I ever deleted some of my rants (most likely one of the deleted ones will be the first one) it's because people from SL and IRL are starting to find me. Lol.
I'm not deleting anything yet tho.2 -
Some of y'all talk way too much shit about web development tools/libs without being web devs yourselves......
I don't know enough about OS development to talk shit, you see me doing it? no
fk me I am getting so fucking fed up with this community, it used to be cool rants about the shit that we go through, now is just pop wannabe dev ranting meme bullshit39 -
As some of you know I start at my new job on friday. I don't have a development or computer related job, so guess what my first task is?
I was at my boss/friends house last friday night and he was like 'I know you're good with computers. So can you install the printer in my bureau?'
Now I can absolutely relate to all the printer rants. -
!rant && Announcement

I will remove it when that feature is added to the original devrant webfeed.
@dfox: If you dont like the use of the api or some of the features please contact me.
Chrome users can join this group to get the beta:
https://groups.google.com/forum/...
I NEED SOME FEEDBACK!!!
Therefore a feedback is my term of use.
Please post it as a comment (or in the google group).7 -
What is with the +1 chasing in here? Votes should be given for good rants and comments, not to climb the count-ladder if that somehow would make you elite community member. Posting a picture you found elsewhere just to earn free stickers or a stress ball, and pollute the incentive the swag were meant for originally.
Stop mass +1'ing some random guys every comment, and earn the votes by contributing with stories, lessons learned, proper rants and supportive comments.5 -
Lots of stress and strain the last months private and at work.
Headache all the days and no time to get back to my self. Programming starts to get tedious.
Now changing my life completely.
Broke up with my girlfriend and started looking for a new work - finally got a new contract today.
Dismissal coming on Monday.
3 months to go to get a enjoyable life.
PS: lurking some months and finally created an account. Thanks for all the rants which let me smile!3 -
I enjoy reading the rants. I also enjoy seeing how some rants end up with solutions from fellow developers who have had similar experiences. It's a huge reason I love our industry. Keep kicking ass everyone.
/non-rant -
I see too many back-end rants against front-ends.
Should we talk about table layouts, malformed html, programatically generated spaghetti wrong markup, css absurd class naming, infinite div wrapping (div-itis), awful usability, poor legibility, terrible typography, wrong color palettes and user-unfriedly design? To name a few horrors i've seen so far.
Some people won't admit that their contempt against HTML and CSS being 'not real code' actually hides their inability or unwillingness to learn it. Or they need the feeling of superiority.11 -
@dfox can you please implement a gang feature? Someone assigns an hashtag to some people and everytime this hashtag is called, the team members get a notif.
Adittionally, maybe you could add gang stats (how many new rants, how many times the hastag was mentioned etc...)36 -

Dudes! I've been enjoying your rants for a while now, lurking in shadows., I've been relating to your stories especially on domestics fligjts, during commutes or when I'm just fucking bored, even over Netflix. Please show me some love so I'm able to show my face as an avatar :)6 -

Hey there devRanters!
In a rants comments I came to the idea (yet again) of doing a kind of devRant meetup in the Netherlands! Would any fellow dutchies be in for this and if yes, lets discuss some details in the comments!123 -
My room fan broke last week, and they were sold out everywhere.
So i build one myself (last rant), but after a while it just blew hot air.
So after some work I have this :) Now it even has RGB :')

Just a heads up - there was a problem with the calculation of the "top" tab day, week and month calculations the last couple of days so there might have been some rants not showing up.
It has been fixed and everything has been recalculated now. -
Ok Now I am getting fed up of
"I am programmer , someone gave me printer/mobile/tv to repair" jokes/rants/memes.
Once or twice is fine. Now they are just reposts with slightly different content. Not funny anymore. Just irritating.
Why do people have to follow a trend here. Have some ingenuity guys.8 -
5 more mins on devrant and I'll finish that project.
Starts project, *buzzz buzzz* new devrant notification. Oohh, I'll just check that notif. Okay, while I'm hear, better check some rants to get it out of my system. Just 5 more mins....1 -
I changed my name on here. When i go back, looking at old rants of mine, people are mentioning "some dude" who doesnt exist anymore.
If only hiding from the government was that easy4 -
Some of you may have noticed:
I was working on a new devRant bot recently.
But this time it doesn't just post a boring random quote everyday, like my @RandomQuote Bot.
This time it actually reacts to the user!
Basically the bot uses https://carbon.now.sh to generate nice little syntax highlighted code.
I just thought this could be handy in some occasions here on devRant.
Especially in the "Questions" category!
Here's the link to the introduction of the bot:
https://devrant.com/rants/2178718
A lot of work went into this bot, so it would be great to hear what you think about it and if you're planning on using it!
Thanks for reading!97 -
I wish there was some kind of "Close as Duplicate" function for rants like there is on Stack Overflow... tends of be a lot of reposts of the same memes.8

I used to kill some time reading devrant some years ago and I just stopped because most rants were basically whinny little teenagers that think they know everything, keepers of knowledge and truth, being clearly crying babies about “ boo-hooo my coworker is not using the language I like” or something they clearly still have a lot to learn about.
Grow the fuck up. I guarantee you that when you have a few more years of experience you’ll realize how little you knew and how great you thought you were when in reality you knew shit.
Hell, I’m on my 16th year of programming experience and what o thought I knew last year had so many knowledge gaps.
Friendly advise, be more humble. You know shit. Get off your high horse and consider for a second you’re not as smart you think you are.
With that said, there are some really good rants here. But it didn’t change much from years ago.10 -
My rants have been too long lately. Have some distilled ire instead.
Fuck computer gremlins.
Fuck non-deterministic BS.
Fuck shit working the third fucking time I try it with no changes in between.
Fuck MojoJojoing
Fuck ExecJS laoding only half the time
Fuck RubyMine for fucking up seven times a fucking day.
And fuck this dev environment!
I just want to fucking work!
adfjlkasdly15 -
It'd be really cool if devRant had some kind of cli tool for random rants during the workday direct from the terminal. Imagine being able to do:
$ dr 'fuck this shit'9 -
Fucking hate it when the moment I sleep, the "spaceX is live" notification awakens me and after 15 minutes of waiting, that bitch says "the plan rescheduled for next week". Don't you really know your fucking rocket has problems 10 minutes before takeoff? really? shit, Now I have to read some idiot rants to sleep again. Fuck my life.4
-
It seems like there are more lower-quality or duplicate comments on rants these days.
Please, save me some time and show a little respect for members of the community by ++ the comment you agree with instead of adding a nearly identical comment and tagging the commenter.
Additionally, comments like '@commenter 😂' when the great comment is still at +0 generally don't add to the discussion and should probably be downvoted.
Comment if you think you can add something, not just because you saw it.11 -
Boys and girls. Never work as a Udacity mentor to get some extra pocket money. NEVER EVER! They are absolute rubbish. It is sad to see the platform that I once loved get transformed from an extremely cool thing into this crap.
There will be a rant or a series of rants in the future about this.9 -
New AltRant update!
You can join the TestFlight here: https://testflight.apple.com/join/...
New Features:
- Weekly Group Rants are here! Now you can finally receive news about and take part in Weekly Group Rants through AltRant.
Other changes:
- Updated the SwiftRant library to v2.0, an update that was long time coming. Thanks to @Lensflare's contributions and suggestions for the SwiftRant library, both of us improved the quality of the library by a metric fuck ton, and more improvements are still on their way.
Known Issues:
- Downvoting is (still) broken. this issue will be fixed in a later update.
- Some of the layout in the Subscribed feed is a little broken. This will be fixed in a later update.
- The Profile screen's small title flickers in and out of existence under some circumstances. This will be fixed in a later update.29 -
read some rants about a devRant meetup?
how do I know they are not from my manager trying to catch me rant-handed?3 -
To everyone who wanted the JS library to do the blur like in one of my other rants, I want you to know that it's close to be finished. I just have some blur position bugs.
I think tomorrow I will finally fix that bug and publish the library on Github.
The linked rant: https://devrant.io/rants/888497/...
I will maybe do another post when the project will be on Github. 😉2 -
It's maybe a cultural or language thing (or perhaps a generation thing!), but I've read some rants today where there has been a suggestion to shoot/kill yourself if you're guilty of some inefficient process or bad practice.
At the risk of over-reacting or coming across as humourless or stiff, it's not something I would ever say to anyone - light-hearted or otherwise.3 -
I've been programming for a while and worked on some relatively interesting projects but I haven't worked in the industry yet. The rants people make here, they make feel as if I know nothing and to some extent, it's a bit intimidating. I still love it though :-)2
-
Today I showed and told some of devRant's rants to one of my housemates (I have 2 and they're both non devs) and he said "People can't be that stupid". Oh boy are you wrong
-
Devrant is making my coffee breaks more fun.
I think we need some kind of new/unread thingy. I try to read rants but I miss some.1 -
Been studying front end development on my spare time for the past 8 months and tomorrow I got a interview for a position at a company as a junior Dev.
Even if I don't get it, it tells me that I'm on the right direction.
One can change their life by putting in some work.
Not a rant, I know but I'm so happy I felt like sharing. Soon I'll hopefully have some rants to share ;)8 -
So those of you who have seen some of my previous rants will know that the past 2 years, I've been "employementally" challenged. I am now very happy to report that I've gotten a contract renewal at my current job. The terms are exactly the same but 3 extra days of anual leave and a 7% raise!1
-
Got 1 star and 1 fork in git feels awesome. Or been a year since I joined git.
Todo conky widget for Linux I build received a star. U can add and delete to-do using terminal, so I feel its cool. https://devrant.com/rants/1402297/... has screenshot.
A bash script I wrote was forked. That was for logging into college wifi page. The routers used to disconnect very often and downloads u to be stalled on fluctuation in electricity. This login script would re-login on connecting back to college WiFi using polling mechanism
Currently working alone, hope soon i will put up some colab work.2 -
I love the fact that once you pass enough time in DevRant you begin to identify people rants and comments by their avatars. Anyone else has that reflex or my brain's RAM is just taken by chrome and it is easier for me to just remember some pixels? xD2
-
Is it just me, or is the rants longing for stickers and balls (sounds vaguely euphemistic) becoming just a bit too common?
I love some good stickers as much as the next guy, but wouldn't it be more fun to have them for something more, well, rant-y?
But by all means, keep ranting about what you think about, I love all of it.3 -
I've never been hacked - not that I know of :D - and never "hacked" someone else.
(Sure, I did some things in high school to circumvent certain restrictions but nothing worth mentioning whatsoever.)
But all these rants that I read so far have me wondering if I shouldn't simply setup a honeypot sometime when I'm about to be really bored just to have some fun. Then again, I don't have time to be bored. :/1 -
Continuation of https://devrant.com/rants/4720819/...
So here we go, the start of day three. A bit of pain in the hips from a badly balanced backpack, but after some adjustments to the contents of my backpack I think I'm ready for another day. 20 km, here we go!3 -
So, someone is trying to catfish me in some social media.
And I can make a few guesses about who it might be. Or maybe I'm being paranoid and all the accounts contacting me randomly, are just spam bots.
But this isn't the first time. From a hateful ex, to someone I turned down because I had zero feelings for, to even random stalkers who found me online and thought that I was the best choice for obsessing over, I've seen different types of online ghosts.
Like... why is it that it takes so much for some people to be decent? Why can't you just say it to my face (aka directly), get your answer, and then fuck off? And if you're actually obsessing, it is not my problem. See a fucking therapist.
Anywho, aside from the wish to be able to occasionally deliver an online slap, and occasionally wishing that everyone on the internet had an ID to be found IRL, I would like for internet to be a less hateful/harassing/terrorizing/bullying/discriminating place. I like internet. I have so many awesome friends on the internet.
I just needed to rant about it so it doesn't weigh on my mind. Now I'm gonna go back to ignoring them and living my own life peacefully. I hope y'all have a good day. 🙂7 -
Yay.... Missed the last train because for some reason, the city's public transit thinks it's not in the 21st century and in the third-largest town in an industry state and can just say fuck customers, drop it like it's 1990 at 1:30 o'clock...
Well, time for an all-nighter. Prepare for some nice rants tonight...
Hope my boss considers the hours.11 -
@dfox what would you say about a "following" feature?
Because I've noticed some absolute regular golden rants coming from some of the same ranters on here and would be cool to never miss the stuff they come out with.3 -
I hereby officially revoke my rant on Paint.NET:
https://devrant.com/rants/2393372/...
After some review I've gotta say, despite its shortcomings it is pretty good for what it is.
So yeah, gonna own that error in judgement.
(Eclipse still sucks though. No error there.)2 -
Need to get some time again, to fix the current problems with the scripts I did so far and then would want to add a script for people to embed polls into rants, which has been a thing people seem to want for a while
---
In case somebody actually visits the strawpoll link from the rant text, you're going to be disappointed, it's exactly what's on the picture lol14 -
Not a rant. But about Windows 10, because some asked "why are there only rants about it?"
The day before yesterday: When switching off my PC, I noticed the shutdown options were "Update and restart" and "Update and shutdown". I chose the latter and went to bed.
Yesterday: I switched on my PC, Windows takes some extra seconds at "Installing updates, 99% done" and... I'm on my desktop. All is well. As unspectacular as it can get.
For me, that is every update experience since Windows 7, ever.5 -
Been 122 days since my last post, since then I have been working on a game engine on Vala using SDL2 in my free time (Lol I have none)
Decided to put that on ice or just work on it when drunk (very common occurrence) and teaching myself C while working on a game or game engine, hopefully will have some quality rants inbound!3 -
"I hate this virtual world", deletes all the social media accounts
Some moments later...
Comes back and rants how this world is full of shit3 -
I got recognized!
I'm new here and was mostly learning, but my team pushed through some bad issues and I got recognized as well. Even for helping whatever little I could.
For all the rants of bad bosses and clients and work. Here's a happy one. :)
I'm in good company in this company. -
This is a rant that doesn't end, it goes on and on my friends.
Some people, started reading it not knowing what it was, and they continued reading it forever just because.....

Man fuck Facebook, log on hardly ever, feel caged by family who won't let me permanently leave, and when I do log on it's always something depressing shit.
My phone auto jumped me back to devRant and some ++ action and cool new rants...so much better, even with the down votes from the "I don't know what I'm doing here" crowd.5 -
git commit -m 'some fixes. FTR I hate Torvalds and I am NEVER using any piece of software built by him!'
// inspired by someone's rants a while ago2 -
I DID IT! I got my first co-op job!! I’ll be starting in the fall and I’m super excited 🤩
Finally I’ll get to do real work and I’ll get to see just how far schooling has gotten me.
Gotta admit I’m a tilt bit worried I over sold myself in the interview but we will cross that bridge when we get to it 😅
I’ll also finally have some real rants soon enough 😏😅1 -
I see a lot of rants about Project Managers (PMs). As someone who might work as that in the future, what are the some do's and don'ts for that role?10
-
# hello world!
I'm 26, from Germany, web artisan and currently on vacation.
I'm fairly new here. Stumbled upon it on my first day of vacation. I will most likely share some rants as soon as my vacation is over, until then I'll comment, fav and ++ other rants and comments.10 -

Hello fellow devRanters, this weekend I've been working on devRant CLI client I want to share with you: https://github.com/stepnivlk/rrant
I'm using it as a fortune when logging into terminal and since it stores rants locally it is fast.
I spent only couple of hours developing it so there is some space for improvement :).
Enjoy it and feel free to comment/do codereview.3 -
Just some random thoughts looking at the soon-to-be new filtering feature.
Wouldn't it be nice if DevRant had a QR login like WhatsApp for easy login on desktop?
What about a "top rants" on profiles?
Oh what about an activity mosaic like GitHub's commit timeline?
Just some thoughts I had while punching my punching bag, it can get tedious.5 -
Reading this rant below remembered me once that I was taking with a generic person at the street about computers. At some time, she said: "my boyfriend is a Hacker. A real hacker. He knows everything about computers. I am going to give him a book that he wants for his birthday: Linux for dummies."
She was not telling a joke...

Hi guys, I'm back!
I spent some time not using DevRant, I got a new phone and thought it would be better not to install it for some days. I had to do a lot of stuff for school these days and didn't want to geht distracted by amazing devs posting cool rants. So here I am, happy to see you all again. (Or at least your avatars)12 -
You will think you are having a bad day, until you come on devRant and read so real shit happening to people.
And, I honestly do find most of the rants here to be fucking hilarious.
I know and understand that these are real frustrations people are going through; but bitch, can I laugh if I find your rant funny? And use some symbols too?10 -
My rant is that I low key hate devRant.
I'm 23, I'm an average software engineer, with some expertise in machine learning and with a decent job.
But seeing all your cool stories, skills and rants makes me feel like I don't know shit and everyone else is just more driven, skillful and passionate, taking care of a 1000 pet projects at a time and dominating their work routine.
Oh impostor syndrome, how I've missed you!
P.S.: I still love your rants, keep them coming.2 -
So yesterday I discussed how I am using speech to text to do approximately 50% of my rants. I am now doing a growing percentage of my outlook emails by voice as the human-computer voice interaction is pleasing and very natural. I have even named my iPhone 'little jumpshot' today.
Today I experimented with text to speech so that my rants are automatically read back to me before I send them. Some decent results.
In settings - general - accessibility you will find voice over (not recommended - be careful). Below that is Speech - speak selection or speak screen options.
Speak selection allows you to highlight text to be spoken. Too much human interaction for my purposes of walking hopefully not tripping be looking down. Using up my nine lives 😐
Below voiceover is - Speak screen - which allows you to pull down the screen with two fingers to speak what is on the screen. This will read the rant or of there are multiple rants on the screen it will read those as well.
It works but it will take a bit of getting used to. It also requires a few clicks here and there.
My goal is to interact with devRant fluidly 100% by voice. Just talking to 'little jumpshot' and him creating and posting all of my rants and reading all the other rants developers post.
For a few days experimenting I am satisfied with the progress but there is a long way to go.
Hopefully, in the end, this may help some people. Any ideas are very welcome.4 -
TL;DR despite 0 year professional programming I am lead of a large travel booking web-app, this is new to me and my boss, who has repeatedly ignored my advice and moved me on before finishing work. Client is not happy, project is way overdue, and yet has just sent NEW FUCKING DESIGNS.
Recap

https://devrant.com/rants/872255/...
Client has sent some redesigns of core search functionality on a project that is overdue and over budget.
DO YOU ACTUALLY *WANT* THIS PROJECT TO FAIL?5 -
God hail @ScribeofGod to comment the following link on all rants mentioning about ++ conversion to binary 😂😂
https://devrant.com/rants/1311206/...2 -
If this was userRant most of the rants would be about difficulties with the app itself.
People say: of course I'm having issues, in not used to it.
I used to help people to use android or iphone even before I had one.
Its not about being used to something. Its about putting your brain to work... some people just can't ...6 -

What does it take to give us some hope the spam around here can be controlled or removed by some power users?
Shit is getting out of control!
I'm pretty sure my ability to -- has been revoked again so that's no longer an option.
Reporting spam doesn't seem to do anything either 🤷♂️

Is it possible on devRant to block users so their rants don't show up in the feed? There are some attention whores around who's content I'd prefer not to be forced to read.16

I hate those questions like "where do you see yourself on five years?" Or "tell me a time when you had to [insert leadership activity here]" where the obvious answers are something inane and managerial.
I also hate those questions that come up a lot when I say I know SQL where they ask me to do some inane, unnatural SQL thing in a statement rather than a procedure or a function.
Also see these: https://devrant.io/rants/136331/...

How do I exclude most non-programming related posts from my feed?
I don't want to see Facebook-like topics about weather and housing in my Devrant client.
I know I can use the toggle switch to exclude tags - and I have excluded some (like Jokes/Memes) - but the non programming rants keep coming.
Any tips on more tags to ignore?9 -
Guys can you please explain why there are some nophp rants being posted? I don't know much about PHP but I'm currently learning it...40

Hello guys im observing since some time your rants.
Here are people which are quite experienced.
I want to start as Freelancer in Germany, mostly for Web development.
All of my Customers are looking for a neat looking, responsive and fast Website.
What should I use and what Templates/framework I could take as a blueprint for the future websites.
Any suggest are welcome!8 -
Alright ladies and no so gentle men...
The time has come for me to ditch dropbox (Because fuck wanting to use ext4 and also have some spare CPU usage when syncing a single fucking file) and migrate everything from my art storage to some old prototypes into private github repo's...
Prepare to see a shit tonne of rants about me forgetting how to git and all that kinky shit...
Wish me luck *salutes*1 -
So I was on a meeting with this (https://devrant.com/rants/1189203/...) guy's PM and he marked him on a front-end card on trello and I was like "HAHAHAHA BURN MOTHERFUCKER" on the inside.
It was beautiful :)2 -
I swear my co worker said we were meeting at the data center at 10pm all week! I call him and he says 10:30. Wtf?!!! Well guess I got some time to read more rants.2
-
Of the rants that have tags, it seems like half of them contain some sort of non-tag that is dry wit, self-aware joke, or humorous comment.7
-
When you anger some mentally imbalanced guy and he comments on your rants as revenge 😂. Made my day, ok, you got my attention.17

!(!meta-rant)
Some question for ya creators
What was the first 10 rants here?
How many users are in devRant? (including ghost usernames)
Server costs how much in a day?
How did ya guys met together?
P.S. I remember you two had a building with the devrant logo in the top. Where is the location? (@trogus)9 -
!rant && feature_request
Could we have option for being notified when particular user posts something? There are people here that i'd like to "follow".
I imagine it would need some granular control there (for instance being notified about user rants but not necessarily comments).
Also it shouldn't be visible for anyone - meaning that you don't know if and how many people "follow" you just to prevent it from being twitter-like outlet and popularity contest.
Thoughts?
@dfox, @trogus3 -
1 in 5 rants in the past week have been about Python bashing. Did I miss some sort of cataclysm or something?11

TL;DR: Clients are still dumb.
The sequel to a previous rant ...
https://devrant.com/rants/1210209
——
Client IT Lead: "We've loaded your code into our website, but *this* particular part of it isn't working."
Me: "Fair enough. I'll make a fix and have it deployed."
... an hour later, my changes are deployed, and I notify the client that the fix is live ...
CIL: "Thanks for fixing that so quickly! Just a heads up, but I've noticed that some of our own code needed fixing, so I've gone ahead and made some tweaks <that will most definitely break your code>."
... another hour passes ...
CIL: "Hey, so, I don't know what happened, but that fix you pushed stopped working."

I started doing teaching assistance in an Introduction Course to R (for the 3rd year in a row); for the big majority of them, this is the first course where they learn some basics of coding.
Now, I know many of us were the same when we started, but sometimes I wonder... have I ever really been as lost as some students? I mean, I had to teach to a student how to move a .txt from the downloads folder to another folder. Wasn't this supposed to be the digital generation?
Even my code is never as frustrating as teaching a programming language... I forecast more rants in the following days!8 -
What's with this "!rant" thing at the start of rants? Is it some ettiquette thing when you mistakenly mis-tag, but can't change the tag, so you have to add this to say "genuine mistake"?4
-
Stack Overflow is a great resource for all sorts of programming hints and tips, information and...sadly, desinformation. But if you want to comment on something someone's said you need 50 reputation points. How to achieve that when you need rep points to do anything that could earn you rep points? It's a catch 22 for newcomers that are like totally excluded from any discussions at SO which is more sort of a read-only community to me. This is where devRant shines. Anyone can rant about anything and comment on anyone's rant. Some rants and comments are stupid, and some are great. In the end of the day, freedom of speech is a great thing.9
-
Feature request: Being able to copy text from rants/comments on mobile. Also some sort of code formatting would be nice!2
-
I don't know why, but in DevRant's weekly rant, I always find a word that I cannot understand. Even google translate is not that helpful in those cases. for this rant, the word is "Procrastination" :-/
Why some English words have to be so terrifyingly hard? These words always make me stay away from writing for the weekly rants :-/18 -
(If you don't know what I'm talking about, read this: https://www.devrant.io/rants/805543 )
I have good news!
Finally, my PC is back alive :'D
I took it to where I first bought it, and...
Apparently the reason why it broke was the AC adapter, as they replaced it with a new one... (the PC was still in warranty)
So now I can finally begin to program again and (hopefully) tell you some dev-related rants! So I can actually feel an active part of this community, haha ♡4 -
@dfox @trogus would you guys mind sharing some statistics on devRant? I've been very curious about the following metrics:
- Daily active users
- Weekly active users
- All time rants count
- Monthly comments count
- Total users count
Thanks for reading and thanks even more for making this beautiful platform 😃9 -
Based on all these data loss rants about repartitioning drives after 10 pm, I think we need some software that stops you from doing destructive actions when you may be tired and/or don’t have a backup.2
-
!rant
Hmm... so I was thinking...
What if devRant implemented a feature that lets you get rants into some kind of list, accessible via your profile? Kind of like the "Watch later" list on YouTube, or playlists. I know we have a "Favourites" list of rants, already, on devRant, but being organized about this might be a good idea.
What do you think?3 -
Why are some of my previous rants tagged with "undefined"? I definitely don't remember doing that 🤔2
-
I have this colleague that who is nice, but if you mention anything about (not complete) java, sun, vmware, windows, daus(dumbest possible user), car manufacturer your ears bleed with is rants about it.
For example:
We talked about BMW which published that the energy generated from recuperation of one of their cars is around 60%. Immediatly he rants that it its not possible and the calculated number of an forum user of the newssite who calculated that 90% of the kinetic energy is regenerated has no idea about the problems.
Sometimes its hard to endure the hate, but i can relate with him in some things.2 -
Remember this : https://devrant.com/rants/1547095/... ?
FINALLY some updates.
Just to say they deleted the branch I was trying to merge on during the month, so I need to redo the pull request and rebase.
(ノ`□´)ノ⌒┻━┻5 -
Had some great feedback on my discrete interface for devRant.
I just published a new version on: http://www.jsrant.com/
Now you can actually load more rants and select the sorting method.6 -
I read alot of rants where people describe that they had to implement things they know were wrong and later the boss complained about it although its what he said.
My requirements engineering professor always told us to document everything. Every change made to the requirements must have the source and the reason written down. Idealy with some sort of signature from the boss.
But i understand its not always that easy or done. Which is kinda sad.undefined requirements engineering in reality everything is different best practice wise words documentation -
Remember /dev/rant for devrant (https://devrant.com/rants/1569303) ? :)
Here's the first version of it: https://gitlab.com/netikras/... . read-only, with some hacks.
Oh, and if anyone needs a pure-shell library for json -- feel free to use it :) Bear in mind it might still be buggy.2 -
Me: woo going to a massive LAN party, going to start hammering out some development, writing and gaming!
Friends: there's a pub just around the corner!
Me: *breathing intensifies*
I swear I'm not an alcoholic from all my rants containing grog or being induced by it but I swear it pops up every time I'm pumpedabout doing some coding...1 -
I'm a twitter kinda guy but after downloading this app from the "recommend" section on Google Play, I'm now a devRant guy. Can't get enough of ppl complaining about stupid stuff. It's great fun. Some rants are just 11/10. Lovely community.1
-
been lurking @ Rants for some time and want to thank you all for some great laughs.
Now I come to seek knowledge.
Studying computer science and all we learn are java at this point.
I want some frontend and was looking at React and realized I need to learn js first.
So, best way of learning js coming from java.
found javascript30.com worth it?11 -
Some of the rants this week have been really touching and amazing. This small community holds within itself so many amazing stories.
The most intense day for me was my last day at my first job. It was sad to see some of the best developers I had personally known for the last time. I learnt a lot there and had some really fabulous moments. -
While I really like the design of this website (and the app), the website kinda feels like the light version comparing to the app. Deleting rants is not possible for some reason. It doesn't remember your preferred sorting algorithm12
-
My partner just told me that the guys that will "take care" of a project that we developed (see this rant https://www.devrant.io/rants/69328) apparently don't know anything about Android or iOS because our ex-client emailed him asking some questions on behalf of the new team like what is Swift and on what language do you develop for Android.
What bothers me more is that apparently we are too expensive but they are planning to get rich 😒 -
...Sometimes as I read rants or comments, I look at the author’s avatar and I try to imagine how the person look like in real life... By some people I would be quite curious how they look like in real... Haha 😄😄😄14
-
So ive made some big improvements to skyRant the Android devRant client and the new version is out on Github!
There's now a fully working Avatar Builder (which actually took a while since it was not really documented to this point) and search, profile editing and community projects page have been added. :).

Just finished my first microservice project. I'm so happy that I was able to do that hardest thing I ever did. It's just a side project but I think it will do well on my cv as I will be finishing university next year.
Just wanted to share this with you guys as all the rants really helped me to calm down when I was wrecking my head over some weird bugs.4 -
Whether it's a good idea to host my very primitive web-app on Heroku or setting up my own VPS on DigitalOcean etc.?
Heroku will save me some time, but I'm not sure about the scalability and cost.
VPS approach means I'll have to take care of all the DevOps myself, even though I know a bit Linux to kick things off, this is still quite daunting to me.
Any suggestions? Insights? Rants?12 -
Feature request
Could we have some kind of way to see who created the post in the comments? Like an OP mark or a different color of the name or something?
When reading long quality rants I tend not to notice the username, and then when I'd like to engage in the discussion I have to scroll all the way up to check it.2 -
Feature request: a way to ignore users so their rants don't appear in my feed. Some of the frequent ranters, while very popular on here, really rubs me the wrong way, and I'd love to be able to filter them out4
-
I just looked at my rants, and saw that I still don't have said HELLO WORLD <3
Damn I'm sorry guys, have been here for some months already. That's the only social network worth to exist seriously :D well with Stackoverflow if that counts.
Anyway I'm late, but let's say it's like my side projects xD I will probably ask for feedback today or tomorrow about it btw.
Well see you later guys <33 -
Wow. All these weekly rants work so well with my current project lol.
A 4-5 year old iOS project, written in Objective-C with some jQuery thrown in to keep things interesting. Its the kind of codebase where you look at some code and think "what the....how....you know what nevermind". Everything has CoreData mangled into it somewhere which causes all kinds of issues. got search results from a web API? better save those to CoreData. Why? Who knows...1 -
I'm in Paris this weekend, with some other developer friends!! Who is in for a Meetup!!! Let's talk code/rants!!

rant && !rant
I started my Internship a couple of months ago, but it didn't live up to my expectations.
> The good things:
- I have a structured internship programme, where we are given a independent project to complete during the internship, so all the work is slow and nice, so no unreasonable deadlines.
- Cool-ass supervisors (and smart too). They let us leave if the we don't have any more work planned, no sitting until the end of office hours, so go home early and SLEEP.
> The bad things:
- Shitty-ass people. But I've to deal with them once in a few weeks, so not that bad.
- Restricted wifi, but some websites can be accessed for memes. So, knd of fine.
- NO BRAIN-FUCKING EXPERIENCES FOR RANTING. I thought I would start my internship and meet retarded people and post some rants but NOOOO, someone had different plans for me (that 'someone' is LIFE, just in case if you are wondering)
> Summary
- Kind of disappointed about material for rants, but 10/10 it's been a good internship.2 -
How do you decide whether or not a program should be written to solve a problem or do some work?

I wonder if there are employers here who read some of the rants and say, "oh wow, we shouldn't treat our developers this way, we should change."
Heh, yeah right.6 -
I feel with @gipsydanger
I had to work with snake case columns with a maximum name length of 16 characters. Abbreviations, acronyms and undocumented adfixes. The ORM models were generated with resolved pendants of the column names. There are typos in name resolving and some adfixes were used with different understandings which result in completely wrong field/property names for the ORM. As this ORM class generating process is separated from migrations some people did not care or check on the ORM.

This Collab thing is so interesting. I have come back to devRant after a long time and its so very nice to see some insane ideas floating around here. This app is not only about Rants now it is a world of its own. Great work David !!4

Fucking dto hell...
Dear C#/.NET developers or any other developers, do you have a fucking smart approach/technique to handle the fucktons of dto classes throughout your webapi and not having to go to 5 different classes if you change some validation attributes ??
Seriously, that is the only thing I like about JS. It just does not fucking care...
EDIT: This rant came across and just fits perfectly: https://devrant.com/rants/68633813 -
Next personal fail ...
previous rant
https://devrant.com/rants/2060249/...
Turned out that wavenet is sequential so it needs previous step to predict next.
Quite obvious when you look at how people speak sentences, they hardly stop in the middle of the word.
🤔
need to think how to proceed next, how to cut sentences.
Watched deepvoice3 and some accent models from baidu.
I can generate 8 sentences at a time, each takes 8 minutes so if I cut between words and got last mels between words right I can get 1 minute but I need to store model somewhere.
I forgot my machine learning and speech synthesis skills from previous life, time to load more skills ... -
One of my favourite rant is this one:
https://devrant.com/rants/667491/...
Today I found out some other assholes doing the exact same thing.
But this time their company name was not int the profile but the answer time was unbelievably fast. So did a google search and from LinkedIn, in that they work in the same company. Flagged the question waiting it be removed.

AWS summit, speakers talking about technologies that amazon didn’t build but they provide on its cloud.
All about how it’s awesome to use those technologies on its cloud infrastructure.
Feeling like I’m on some bad advertising summit.
I heard docker, containers like 100s times already.
On one of the slides they claim that 85% of tensorflow workloads are on their cloud.
That’s powerful statement.
Looks like enterprises are all on the way to Oracle 2.0 called AWS.5 -
I’ve left a bad job a month or so ago.
Now I have less long story rants about the constant bullshit.
You win some you lose some I guess -
I had to rename my unofficial devRant client SwiftUIRant due to some concerns from Apple regarding the term Swift in the app name. 🙄
Well, it’s JoyRant now. 😁
And there is a new test version in TestFlight:

Do some of you somehow internalize the rants of people here and wonder if your workmates feel the same?
Or have you encountered someone rant about a coworker but that’s also something you do/did and now you wonder if your workmates think the same about you?3 -
Am I the only one who will spend half an hour reading through the "top all-time rants" section of devRant to figure out why they're so popular? I just can't shake that feeling that there's some sort of pattern there that I can optimize...
Guess I must be a developer, given that last statement :D3 -
Do all of you guys listen to music all the time? I see a lot of rants about some music apps not working properly in some Linux distro or posts about how music helps you to concentrate on coding etcetera. And, I don't even recognize half of those music apps.
It's not that I hate music, I just don't listen to it. I prefer silence over sound waves bombarding my eardrums.6 -
Last night the Russians stroke again. It's become obvious that these Ddos attacks are not performed by just some casual hackers, but are part of cyber warfare - just as I suspected in one of my rants a couple of weeks ago6

Update to watchRant!
(my second and probably last post about it)
watchRant client is mostly complete now!
Added: logging in, notif page, ranting, commenting, ++/-- of rants, search, amoled theme,
A surprise me btn for a random Rant (why is this not in the official app @_@, its in their API)
And the best:
Sick rant animation of the client of @Simmorsal!!
https://github.com/SIMMORSAL/...
some things are still missing: voting comments, stories page, comment/ranting with images (nobody takes images with a watch haha) ...
watchRant is also available on the PlayStore now (as sideloading to a watch isnt very convinient), but the latest updates will always be on github first
For context: https://devrant.com/rants/6340608/...13 -
I got a question about the devrant api.
I’m trying to query the 1000 most recent rants with the /rants endpoint. Trying to get 50 rants per request.
After about 550 rants queried, the api response starts being essentially empty, but the success flag is set to true.
Am I running into some underlying limit preventing me from viewing more rants?7 -
Update to my last rant*:
I got to know what my colleague did as he "rewrote" my code:
He just searched some GitHub-Projects and used the good old copy+paste method.
Awesome bro, "rewriting" code until nobody's understanding it is the best method to improve code.

Weekly Out-Of-Context Thread
I'm looking for comments on rants. Not just any comments people, but comments that are non-sequiters, comments that are hilarious, or make no sense when taken from their original rant.
Anyone participating should link back to the original post to give credit. It would be great to get some regulars in here, but ideally we can prod some people into action that aren't on as much.
POST for our AMUSEMENT SLAVES! POST FASTER I SAY! FASTER!3 -

Put a rant about some productivity stuff and instantly my feed had few productivity related rants on top. algorithm is working well @dfox :)
-
@dfox - yall should publish some metrics on devrant, maybe a punchcard graph for rants per minute? think it would be kind of cool to see how rapidly the community is growing2
-
Not a rant, but a cheer!
Reading other devs rants on devRant released some of the tension and muscle knots that had built up during the week. Reading devRant should be prescribed by doctors! -
@dfox why do some of the older rants display the date on the rant but then the comments are older than the rant itself (for example, the rant say 22/09 - or 09/22 to you - and the comments say 16-09. But most of the comments I see say 16-09). What did you guys mess up 😛2
-
following former rant https://devrant.com/rants/1816992/ i implemented some features that enable a specialized search engine to process the content of my wifes custom site like a wordpress site. since the crawler relies on class-names i made an dynamic implementation of additional - non-used but crawlable - classnames. i called that method "classmate". i am a bit desperate.

One question to the devRant gods: why make rants uneditable after five minutes?
I find no reason to this. Even the paid version does not eliminate this restriction.
All social media I know allow editing your posts afterwards (with some, showi g a change history).
Maybe... are the rants stored in a blockchain❓ 😱😂😂7 -
Would be amazing if devrant grouped the question answers, because when some famous question post is answered all that answers are thrown in my face in the same format than rants and bugs my mind.
Just group that shit, plz!!!3 -
@dfox Can we get a sorting option for rants/comments on profile pages? Or at least some way of determining what rant/comment has the most ++s?7
-
Should rants contain a message/lesson/formulated statement, or fo you consider rants a venting mechanism?
Out of curiousity, since I see some people in the comments asking what the message/constructive idea is on some posts1 -
I've just finshed a cours about service-oriented architecture in my uni and a lot of people are "complaining" about SOA becasue it's not used so much these days and it's a waste of time to learn it. What's your take on this? Do you use or have SOA in your company or use it in some way? Any rants about stuff you learned in school that were completely outdated? A friends friend finished uni about two years ago and they had a big course in Flash...2

I wish we can re-share ( retweet ) some rants and stories on devrant. Like it's a need more than a feature.8

Took few weeks break from coding, social media and stuff like that. And holy cow things have changed. Over 9k new rants here, bunch of new js frameworks, Instagram got some security issues..
I'm just amazed.7 -
When you’re laughing/cringing at some of these rants and you hear that little voice in the back of your head say:
“I shouldn’t be laughing.. Screenshots of my code will probably be posted here when the next guy takes over my project..”
I’ve written fast and dirty code back in the days that still makes me nervous, but we don’t have the time and resources for a rewrite and besides.. My code works, so.. 🤷🏻♂️💅🏻 -

I applied for some jobs lately as I was laid of (as seen in one of my previous rants). I've sent out the last application today at 2 AM and I am already invited to the company tomorrrow as the ceo thinks I would fit the team perfectly - the bad thing about that is that they would like to see some of my previous work - the problem about that is that all my showable previous work is under NDA D:4 -
Have you ever thought, you might meet your soulmate or etc here? As a guy watching some of the rants here, I'd have Endless Hours of how was work or19

Continuing to talk about my previous post:
https://devrant.io/rants/814261/ -> link to the posting.
This weekend I've been sending some resumes to see if I can get a good spot, I still keep looking for a good remote spot, because here companies are not accustomed to paying well and not to pay their passage to the workplace (but they require you to go there to do Something you can do from your home, much less your feeding cost.
In this previous post some colleagues of profession gave me tips for I got good remote jobs being from my country, I hope it all works out. -
Rant about other people ranting about people ranting about Microsoft/GitHub, you really need to stop telling people about what they're allowed to rant about, your rants about other people's rants are taking over devRant and it's annoying as hell!
We get it, you're against people ranting about certain topics, but at some point you've got to move on.
(How meta can we get?)5 -
Rant:
My jupyter notebook has outgrown itself on some real world trading data analysis and its becoming a pain to add to (further) and share.
Need to find better alternatives, web apps where are you?
But i know nothing about it. Learning curve ahead!
Requirements:
I've 7 interactive dashboard plots (from some data) in jupyter-notebook.
- It'd be nicer to have a web app to use them without running notebook from a different location.
- Or running notebooks remotely (running as daemons on host machine).
Any suggestions for a starter ?
rant before requirements, coz rants lead to better requirements.

I saw few rants about "working in a box". Isn't that legacy technique and we all are now working in open space?I have auto adjusting chair that costs more than my month salary, desk which raises when I push button, console rooms etc etc
Still some thinks that we are slaves of companies working 'in the boxes '. If you are on devrant and you agree with this kind of jokes I must say that you have chosen a bad place to work ;( -
My mind is so tired that I am unable to concentrate on people rants. I guess some sleep, couple of energy drinks and coffee would make me ready to work later tonight. See ya devs.

I was wondering if it is allowed to crawl all posted rants on devrant to do some fancy data mining stuff while learning python. Any clue?3

UNOFFICIAL DEVRANT CLONE JAM - VOTING START - DAY 1
3 entries were submitted, and we're ready for your feedback! It is exciting to know what your votes say about the work needed to supplant devRant. However, considering the sudden announcement of hackathon some 10 days ago and very short sprints, we get what we get.
2nd place nominee gets their devRant self in all vector beauty. Of course, it's not the exact style, but it's something resembling and with objects separable from each other! The winner gets an animated version.
You are welcome to familiarize with all devRant clones that our participants have made!

Some of my rants are about a previous dev who, to be nice, didn't play by the rules and did his own thing. Yesterday, I discovered a legacy app he had written that was essentially his own hand rolled version of Task Scheduler. From what I can tell, there's no functionality that isn't already handled by Task Scheduler, this guy just liked making his life impossibly hard.1

I should run a daily cron job for my Mac rants. Today it was just this: I connected to some other iMac over network discovery, but from within in the GUI it is impossible for me to get the IP or any information of that machine. Software Idea: correlation between MicroShit updates vs number of rants on that date
guess that would give some interesting results -
DevRant is fun for me these days, more now than ever.
People create bot accounts, post content off of ChatGPT/post OG rants which we all shit on, except one guy. You know who that is.
Some try to force their projects on us, while being homophobic, racist and 10 other things. One of them grew on me, ngl.
Some are talking about me everyday but too scared to tag me, cuz they know I will blast their ass, and have, in the past.
Some people I had beef with, one of them is now a friend of mine. The others, not so much.
Finally.6 -
Fuuuuu I tried sideloading the devrant app on my Android watch but it kept crashing so I did a logcat over ADB and saw they use function that don't work on watches. So Damm sad I wanted to watch some rants way more sneaky5

Is there some app that can record my internal rants and conversations?
The problem is I only have them in spurts when I'm outside or not at a desk and then can't remember then if I want to write them down later. Plus I think if I were writing them down as I thought it out, it would disrupt the flow...6 -

I created some statistic graphs. The statistics are based on the last week. The statistics show activity on devrant. See comments.
Does anyone know if the API is limited to data of a week or so? I can't get more out of it than 114 rants.11 -
Lesson learned from my previous rant:

CPU bottleneck spotted. Time to fix some shit.
nvidia-docker vs native code execution brings around 10% performance decrease so far. -
Spoiler: This might be a dumb question
In this platform the rant count is showing for all people like a badge. And we can see that whenever someone comment in a feed or near the posted person. Do they have a separate column to keep track of rants ( ++ ) or is it a overload to call db count query of all ++ they recieved by various post and people because some people have 5000+ whenever their name appears7 -

Seriously why on devrant does searching for a tag return some rants without the tag, but by people named after the tag. And sometimes just with people with *related* names (eg. PHP returning a bunch of non-PHP-tagged rants by some called Phlp or something). Seriously.5

If some older employee writes the same code, nobody bats an eye. If a newer employee (with less than 2 years in the company) writes the exact same line, everybody loses their minds (in PR review)...

So my programming teacher knows his shit, but is pretty bad at explaining it.
I can already see some of the other students, especially the ones without prior programming-experience, flunking this class.
Today spent most of the class talking about 2-complement and the functions in math.h.
I think we didn't even learn about reusing code with functions, or structs.
I use some of my time, helping the other students getting through this somehow.3 -
I don't understand those rants about problems that can be fixed by just googling some keywords..or even the slightly harder ones where you could just tinker with the device for a bit and get closer to a solution/workaround... i mean if it's not a hardware problem then it can clearly have a solution.
my reasons:
1- you use your knowledge for good
2- you learn something new
3- you don't let the tech guys get bothered by small tedious problems -
Still on this : https://devrant.com/rants/1430952/...
So I understand that on the framework of the company, to store data in your cache, you use a method, called
Load.
So yeah, that seems kinda okay somehow. But this method is called by another one called GetOrLoad, that will get or load the data.
Is my english bad or is it really ambiguous given that context ?2 -
seems to be my luck not to be financially dependable on web dev. when it comes to javascript it supports me with the opportunity to develop some pieces of software to substantially simplify my job bypassing all the it restrictions in our company. i understand i am in the perfect position not having to fulfill customers needs and to make compromises only to myself and that this does not count for professionals. but i like to take up cudgels for javascript seeing some of the rants here 😁

!rant Since there was quite some bashing on CMS as of wk60: I want to create a new website for a community I am in but am not really experienced with web development. My plan was to give Joomla a try but after all these rants I am not sure anymore.
