Person: HTML is a programming language
Me: No it's not
Person: Yes it is it can compute things
Me: No it can't, and what do you mean?
Person: Have you ever heard of a script tag
Me: That's not fucking HTML that's JavaScript.14 -
How did I learn how to program?
I didn't. I'm still learning ☺.
We will never be done learning.
That's the beauty of it all.3 -
When you're trying to optimize a process and a team members gets upset because "that's not the way we've done it before!"
No fuck. That's why we are fucking improving it.1 -
So we were doing Computer Network revision.
our teacher asks,' what is another method except GUI to send mail?'
I know it is using terminal.
'Terminal' I replied.
'No, it was something else'

Arghhhhh that's exactly what I'm trying to do 😡9 -
Project Manager: You used a hash/salt to encrypt the password in our customer database?
Me: Yes.
Project Manager: That's mean we will not be able to see the password?
Me: That's the whole point. Why would you want to see what password customer is choosing?
Project Manager: Change it. Use random encryption method.9 -
My mobile phone provider called me and offered me a new contract containing more data volume.
Customer service: 'Your current contract has only 1.5GB data volume. That's not much. With this you can only send 1 or 2 pictures and that's it.'
Me: 'What kind of pictures do you use / send? 😨'11 -
Oh yeah that.
That's a known bug.
It's been there for a long time now and the customer knows about it.
We ship it as expected behaviour now.2 -
AWS has identified suspicious activity on my account.
I'm using it for the first time in 2 years. That's the suspicious activity.5 -
That feeling of when you finish a year long project, showing it off to family and getting a "huh that's it?" response. I just poured all being into this, it's okay. 😐3

That's a new one on me fixing a website on my phone whilst on a train , internet dropping in an out
I did it 😎11 -
Disabling pasting into a password field in 2020 with password managers, is retarded. That's it that's the rant. Doesn't matter if you think password managers are good or not. Its still retarded that there's a 40 something year old dumbfuck manager who told a web designer at EA to disable pasting into a fucking password field because he was dumb enough to think it stopped hackers or some shit like that.14

Yes, of course! How did I ever expect this to work? I was really stupid not to see this. THIS was the logic error! Of course this couldn't possibly have worked. This will surely fix it.

It's funny. Although I try to only use open source software which is free (at least as in freedom but also as in beer mostly), I'd gladly pay for using it!
But no way on fucking earth I'd pay for proprietary software.
Why?
Because I'd love to support the people behind the free software! They made something awesome and the most awesome thing is, they made it in a way that ensures that the end users can modify it to suit their needs! That's so fucking awesome!
That's why I'd never pay for proprietary software. Can it have awesome features? Yes, of course! But can anyone except for the devs easily modify it to suit their needs? No. And that's why I'd never pay for it.18 -
I would say world peace, but that's had unlimited money and time into it and still failing, so I'll go for a sentient robot unicorn.8

I honestly don't understand why some developers like to shit on other's preferences.
Don't like PHP? Fine, but don't give shit to somebody else for liking it or coding in it.
Not a fan of Javascript? That's cool, but do realize that there are people who enjoy coding with it and don't appreciate you talking shit about their preferences.
Don't like a certain framework? That's okay, but again, there are people who code with it so don't tell them that they shouldn't.35 -

Friends' Boss: You're one of the programmers, right?
Friend: Yes sir.
Boss: I need you to fix this layout problem for me.
Friend: But sir, I'm a back end programmer, I hardly know anything about style stuff...
Boss: You're a programmer, you'll figure it out.
That's not how it works, that's not how any of this works.1 -
It is time. I have to admit it.
I don't understand Git.
I just memorized some basic commands: git commit, git push, git push -u origin master, git clone, git checkout [-B], git merge. That's it, that's the full list. I use them like they're some kind of magic spells that do what I need. Everything else, those intricacies like rebasing, resetting, HEAD and all that shit, is beyond me.
I'm not a real programmer. Real programmers know Git.30 -
Me: Please don't commit the binaries
PM: We need to commit all the files so we can track process

That's it. I've had enough.
I lost my job yesterday (again) and the Irish cumstain who lives in the room next to me got pissed last night and kicked my door in because he thought I had his phone(?) and was ignoring him, when I was at work.
Long story short, he ripped my friends back door apart, tried to fight me (which ended with me chasing him down the street with a plank).
Police came and did a wonderful job as always by making us shake hands and 'promise' to leave each other alone.
THIS ISN'T FUCKING PRIMARY SCHOOL. DRAG HIM AWAY BEFORE I DO, YOU IGNORANT FUCKING PIGS.
Oh, and my 'friend' then had a schizophrenic episode and blamed it all on me(?!?). I then went to buy 2 bottles of vodka and decided to get pissed before trying to kill myself.
Ah, I love humans. Dirty, ignorant, blood sucking bags of sweaty meat and delicate bone. I really want to turn this Irish cunt into a skinsack of blood and guts, but I'm waiting patiently. He's going to wake up one night tied up and gagged, with me dragging him to a forest somewhere far far away...
Is it weird that I want to make him scream, cry, and shit himself at the same time?11 -

Linux is hard to learn and master. That's fine with me. Windows is intuitive, but not user-friendly. Linux has a steep learning curve, but then is far more user-friendly than any other operating system. To me, that steep learning curve was far more than worth it, as I now have a desktop that does whatever I want, and behaves exactly as I want.
People come to Linux hoping that it will be easy to pick up, and then get angry when it isn't. Then they claim that the community is toxic, because Linux users are happy with something they think is broken.
Linux is hard to learn, and that's fine. That's valuable, to me. That's part of the appeal to me(and millions of others). Linux is unforgiving when you lack the knowledge gained in that steep learning curve. That's fine with me too. As its userbase grows, so too does the number of knowledgeable people who work to make it better and invent more amazing things for it.
If Linux was easy to learn, it wouldn't be as good as it is, and to me, that's reason enough to love it.41 -

Someone asked me how I learned to program. And I realized it was a series of telling a client "No that's not possible" then finding out it is, on Stackoverflow... And learning how to do it1

I don't get all the amazement etc people show when they find out that I don't use services like WhatsApp, Instagram, Gmail, Outlook, Google etc, why would it be 'weird' to want control over who has/owns your data? I don't think i need to say anything.1 -
When are people going to understand that programming is not about quickly putting something together?
Programming may have its utility in helping us out building solutions, but that's a secondary function of it.
Ultimately and abstractly, as MIT professors said, it's about the imperative paradigm of solving problems.
I really dislike it when people treat programming as if it were a toolbox. It is a great engineering feat. That's like saying math is just about numbers. No, it is about concepts. We're thinkers, not doers.4 -

if you write awesome code that's undocumented nobody will ever use it, or why I use external open source libraries over internal ones

So I had an interesting conversation with a "developer" from another org:
Me: "So I might have a new client. Their site really needs an update."
Them:"Let me see." *goes to perspective client site*
Them:"Wow, that's bad!"
Me:"Yep it hasn't been touched since 08"
Them:"No, that's not the reason. The reason it looks this bad is because it is made with php."9 -
(In response to stupid request) "Yes, that's fine."
Translation: "I've come to the conclusion that dying in prison for murdering you, is worth it." -
I'm soon to be done with my Dockerised project that I expect to be popular. Where should I host it that's affordable, but scaleable if needed?3

So I have a xaml object that is designed for pagination on web pages, and the current page must be at least 1.
But the web service used for the data that go with that object starts its pagination at least at 0.
So everytime I must assure that the xaml object has 1 and the web service has 0 for the first page.
That's not hard, but that's the kind of thing that's annoying, why doing it that way -
A crowded bus, going to school, on a WhatsApp group that's only me and I use it to keep stuff.
It was quite uncomfortable.1 -
Friend: Ohh, that's what it is... WHY DIDN'T YOU JUST CALL IT THAT THEN?!
Me: AWS?
Friend: Yeah.
Me: Yep.1 -
funny thing. My apple account is not logged in cuz of payment method. But it just worked. You just have to try it again and again like 17th times, so that's how you do it.

"DevRant is not even close to being as popular as it should be" - I say that's not a bug... (you know the rest)1

I just went back to Old School Runescape and I played it 7pm - 2am last night so I guess that's my new distraction

All new frameworks / patterns / code concepts seem great !! Until you take a minute to imagine your current application using them and the time needed to implement.
That's it. That's the rant. /me wants to buy code migrator / generator from "A" to "B"1 -
It suuucks having to code split-screen on a 15" 1920x1080 laptop on a small desk that's only 2 feet wide. That's my home setup..
Code-cramp, I say. Time to upgrade sometime.. I need a new desk, for instance..2 -
@dfox For some reason, I can favorite my own rants if I send a request to do it manually, I guess that's not... good?9

When a client goes "I want this website but with my logo and content. How long would it take you to build this?"
Well dear client, it would technically only take me about 2-3 days, but that's not happening because that's someone else work. :) -
Honestly bad at this front-end thing. CSS you fix one thing and it affects something else, at least that's what I've been experiencing.4

Asks me for time estimate on a project. I gives time estimate. "That's not exactly what I was asking for. It's more of a {{ MBA_term }}. I'll explain it to you shortly." Never explains it.

I don't get it, why having more than one decorator looks "weird"? that's idiomatic Python AFAIK, that's sounds more like nitpicking on aesthetics :/1
-
Tried Lua for the first time in a while. Really didn't like how it handled chars/strings, that's about it.3

Just curious, who here plays escapist and wishes it were multiplayer? Or dont starve (well that's multiplayer).1 -
That's it!! Code::Blocks sucks! It can't stay 5 minutes without crashing. Do you guys know a good IDE for C++? (Preferably for linux)9
-
it seems currently in android studio , it can't differentiate between file extension. That's why it's giving duplicate resource error during app release build , while both files extension are different.1

Apply apply apply some more.
You might need to go on 5 or 6 interviews before you get one offer. That's how it works.
