Today at work, still laugh thinking back to it!
We were on lunch break but the linux support engineers who are on the phones as well have to pick up calls anyways (very small team).
*engineer walks to the table, sits down: Ahhh rest, finally!*
*tringggggggggg*
*engineer pulls a face like 'oh for fucks sake' and walks back to his desk*
*puts headphones on and clicks the answer button just as it disappears*
"really!?! Alright lets finally eat now"
*sits for literally one second*

*Engineer seems quite pissed off now. walks to his desk again, puts on headset, clicks the answer button JUST as the call stops again*
"Mother of god, fucking really?"
*stays as his desk for a minute or so, walks back, stays hovering above his chair for a little and finally sits down again*

Had this a few weeks ago. A customer send an email telling that her emails didn't load anymore in the web interface.
Fair enough, tested it and indeed, no emails while there were definitely emails on the server and nothing in the logs or anything.
Replied saying that I'd look into it.
Few hours later she messaged back all happy about it working again and thanking me so much for all the effort I put into getting it to work again!
My thought at that moment: "oh shit completely forgot about that ticket... Wait it's working again? Oo I didn't do anything... 😅"

Windows 10 once again held my computer at ransom! When it finally came around after the update, all it really seem to do is place Edge back on my task bar. No... Bad Microsoft, I don't use or want Edge.

Just wanted to format a USB flash drive so I formatted it with gparted, didn't go well so I took it out, back in and was about to try again when... last check....
Oh, that not the flash drive, that's my main SSD 😅

Me and a junior coder are working on a project. However, he likes to think he's funny and say "Ok google" to stop me from using my phone.
He said "Ok google, search midget porn" when I was calling my mom so naturally I need to get back at him, so when he's in the rec room, I backed up all his code on my flash drive, and copied it to the clipboard, and removed all project files from his computer.
He came back while I was in the bathroom, and when I reentered the room and was balling his eyes out, that his project was gone. I said to him, don't ok google me again and I handed him the flash drive back. He has never done anything bad again.12 -

Leave work with two working monitors at my desk, come back the next day to one monitor and a missing HDMI cable. Find out marketing took it for a presentation, don't get it back for three weeks. Finally get it back for a day, become super happy to finally have both monitors again. Come back the next day and PM has stolen my HDMI again, no extra HDMI cables in entire office. Apparently HDMI cables are valued like gold around these parts.10

Microsoft are getting a lot of pats on the back today for open sourcing MS-DOS. It might have meant something before FreeDOS was so well established and mature, but now... really, who gives a shit? Even more significant, they already "open sourced" it before, just not hosted on GitHub.
Here's the thing. Going open source is like losing your virginity. You only get to do it once, you can't take it back, and you certainly can't claim to be doing it again just because you're using a different host.

After a company Christmas dinner, some employees went to a bar together. One colleague was so drunk that he felt from his chair. We lifted him back up again, but left him under the table after the third time.

I've tried you because of hearing a lot of good stuff about you. I'd switch back to netbeans regardless because I love netbeans and I always try to use as little as possible from companies like Google/microsoft/facebook (and others) but what you're pulling right now is un-fucking-believable.
I've disabled ANY AND EVERY form of calling home I could (find) in your settings. Crash reports, automatic updates, metrics, you name it. I've searched all the fucking settings but I can't find any other home calling thing that's enabled and yet:
I'm monitoring every goddamn DNS request (through my own DNS server) and I'm still seeing calls to a Microsoft owned domain. Closed all my browser sessions and you as well and it stopped. Started browser again but not you, nothing.
Started you again: BAM. Calls to that damned Microsoft owned domain again.
If you can't honour my decision for disabling any form of home calls, go fuck yourself.

Not my own bug, but at our sister company there is a PHP developer who almost gets fired twice a year, once when the clocks go forward and once when they go back again. He can't program dates well, or use stack overflow apparently.3

GitLab CE crashed after doing a reconfigure, something with the LetsEncrypt client. Hours of debugging later it suddenly works again and the letsencrypt client doesn't throw errors either.
Happy that it works again but I'd like to know WHY it suddenly works again after I pretty much changed nothing (or, I did, but I put everything back to the original values every time a suggestion doesn't work).

And I gave him the paths and he said: "Try now."
And I tried and it still didn't work. And then we tried all that again. And again. And finally he said:

One bug that I've been running into...
I'm scrolling through my feed and I double tap a post and instead of ++ it opens the post twice. You hit back, and it just goes back to the same post again.4 -
I just want to share my very first companion. Haha... This is btw my laptop way back 2011, used it to store highschool memories and silly stuff, if you know what I mean. This is the laptop that I first used the labrynth of directories such as A folder contains A to z Folder and again inside one of those contains A to z again lowered and upper. This is also my partner in coding C++ back in the days, I usually write code in paper and when back to school I used our lab's computer. Ohh and I also have my anime addiction started on this too! One time I discovered the side VGA and connected it to our big LCD screen but by the time I plugged it in, it produce explosive sounds, and my grandpa said that that lcd tv is only for 110v not for 220v. I learned the importance of voltages that day. I just went back and open it to backup my highschool memories and stuff to my external hdd. Ahhhhh memories.

Anyone an idea? Trying to install proxmox on my HP Proliang again but no matter what I do, it can't find a bootable disk. I've done this about 20 times before (and that worked well) and I did change the boot order but I already set that back again.

So, I just put my PC back together after a thorough internal cleaning.
And I just stepped on a small screw.

My laptop's pissing me off.
The screen kept flickering so I took out the frame, and checked the display ribbon cable. It was intact, so I put the frame back on and it was fixed.
But a few days later, it started flickering again. For some reason, taking out the frame and putting it back on fixes the issue. I have no idea why.
I'm glad it works, but it's irritating taking it out and putting it back on all the time.12 -
So after exactly 30 minutes of building a basic interpreter (yes I'm back on the interpreter wagon) in python, I have once again come to the conclusion that python can go fuck itself with its backwards and inconsistent syntax with needlessly over worked and backwards data structures...

That was 45 minutes ago and It's still shutting down. And I'm just sitting with that screwdrived in my hand, looking at that blue screen and waiting. I feel stupid
UPDATE: I gave up. Long-pressed the POWER button. que sera, sera, right?
Lights go out. I press POWER again to boot it back up (forgot to save smth else). And it boots up back to the "SHUTTING fucking DOWN" AGAIN!!!

If finally happened. My cats broke me down.
After years of spotty internet, in which I couldn't resolve websites, to which the solution always was to reach down and push the RJ45 jack with the broken off clip that connects my router to my pihole back in, because my cats pulled it out once again.
They made me do. They finally made me do it. After all those years. Today, my cat pulled it out like ten times in a row... So I finally did it. I walked over in the other room, grabbed a new cable and plugged that one it.
Try that again, cat. I dare you. Try it again!1 -
I heard good things about Edge recently and thought that I should give it a try for a few days.
I’ve opened the same pdf file in multiple Edge windows and and tabs, each scrolled to a different page.

The middle-mouse button scrolling is broken on half of the windows and tabs. You press the button, you see the scroll mouse curser. But it doesn’t scroll.

Scrolling horizontally to an area which wasn’t visible before, the content there is extremely blurry. Scrolling vertically to different pages doesn’t fix it. Is it the pdf? No. It’s just Edge. Zoom in and out again and the blurriness is fixed for now. Until it comes back later on a random page.

Duplicate another tab and suddenly it crashes all of the tabs and windows of Edge. Now I need to open them all again and scroll to the positions that they were before…
If you think that it was just a one time issue, you are wrong. All of them happened multiple times and after Windows reboots.

Windows 10 wanted to restart my XPS due to some updates, said will do it during idle hours but I still restarted. Boots back , couldn't. Tried again, same. Removed all USB devices , HDMI monitor, mini display monitor , still no luck. Removed power cable & it starts.

The biggest hurdle I overcame on my dev career was coming back to a full time job after a few years spent on a "hippie phase" combining work as an artisan, content developer and editor, and just a few freelance dev jobs. It was all a struggle to start again thinking of myself as "junior again" surrounded by people ten or fifteen years younger than me. But I kept myself over the tidal web and here I am, a Senior again.

1 Week ago I took down the development version of an internal demo, leaving only the prod one (temporary space issue). Colleagues were told n+15 times via email, face to face, comments on tickets etc. The prod one has also been live for weeks, and again, they were told when it went up.

I know people have mixed feelings about Uncle Bob and I really never followed the guy at all, but back in college I found his book Clean Code on a shelf and read it cover to cover. A lot of it really stuck with me. In fact, I might dig it up again now that I'm thinking about it.3

Coolest project I ever worked on was an anonymous ranting website called NightOwl. It was loginless, yet had sessions. you could open the website and start posting stuff, follow people, close the website, shutdown the laptop for a year and then open the website again and still get everyrbing back.

Soo highlight. I’m a Tech Lead dev, and I happened to have had a gunshot injury in 2021 Dec, and kinda suffered some hectic stuff but long story short, I went through a full year from recovery and blah blah, but anyways after that year when I went back to work my boss(former), asked I go for psychological tests etc, then after that I passed everything as normal but then soon as I went back to work my boss took me to HR for some special performance review process that could mean I get fired or put back in the team again. My question is it this a fair trial when I never got another chance to work again as I was hired??? I need help pls :(4

I was once called by an unknown number and heard a typical recruiter story. Since i never heard of or spoke to this person i kindly asked where he'd get my information from. Since mr, Recruiter didn't answer and just kept selling his great position i hung up.
He called back.
I picked up the phone again and he told me there were connection issues. I once again asked where he found my number. And again he just acted like he didnt hear me and sells his great position.

I saved my uni work onto a floppy disk (2001) and walked a mile into university library to print it. When I got there and put it into the computer it had corrupted and the disk was unreadable! Luckily I had a back up on my computer so had to walk the mile back, saved again onto two different floppy disks this time and walked the mile back. This time I managed to print it and deliver the work 5 minutes before the deadline.

For example, in my case, I did. I wanted to be a purely Front-End developer. I entered the business as a top-tier helpdesk agent, then started out as a back-end programmer and then I was hired again as a back-end programmer.
Even though I had constantly been looking for front-end opportunities, I've ended up in back-end because the front-end positions were apparently put away for those who already had tons of previous experience while I had none.
Perhaps someday I will pick up the thread again and become a Front-End developer. Who knows - only I do, for a part. I still have tons to learn. Build your own future!11 -

Later on in the code I need the value again but now it was a string.
Typecasted it back to a floating point.

I am considering buying a gel wrist rest, do those even help? If not what should i buy in order to not destroy my wrists? I am one of those devs who back from work and sit by the machine again.

Baseball game
I love sports, the weather was fantastic and the crowd wasn't that loud. Kicked my feet back, cracked open a Yoohoo, turned on my light theme and went to work.
I'd do it again too. But that kinda weather isn't here yet. -
i had built up a great addiction to working out daily last year until i went on a trip to village on new gear and came back coughing hard. my cough thenlasted for a month followed by another trip followed by again coming back home and getting sick.
now its 3 months down this year, i am again healthy but haven't started hitting the gym nor do i feel motivated to :(
i mean, what is even the point of keeping your body in pain when it is as fragile and prone to diseases as it was when you were young :/ fucing shitty fragile body11 -
Having to debug a program on a batch of 5000 punched cards and needing days to get them to the data center per mail.
Then you wait days to get the result just to see that it threw an error so you begin to debug what basically means that you change something in your 5000 cards, send them back, wait days, get an error again, make a change... send them back and so on...2 -

I didn't spend the whole weekend (some 20 hours) wiping my server and setting it back up because it was a steaming pile of garbage...
then fucking it up again and redoing the whole process again....

@dfox There's something wrong with bluetooth keyboards in the devrant android app.
1) If you switch from the onscreen keyboard (I'm using Hacker's Keyboard) to a bluetooth one while on the rant/comment editing/posting screen the exit and post buttons become unresponsive. (Pressing the back button on your phone is okay though. If you then reopen the rant it works again)
2) switching back to the onscreen keyboard replaces everyting you've written with the tags ...?

Oneplus 5 suffers from battery drain with OOS 4.5.8.
Reverted to OOS 4.5.6, gaining better battery life, but a WiFi drain is still here and although I get through the day and more, it bugs me a lot.
Today I woke up thinking about updating to 4.5.8 again just because I'm an update maniac.
Gosh why can't I leave it alone?
(I have considered modding but for now I don't really want to go back on that road again because of laziness)1 -
I'm using right now Huawei Honor 5X with Cyanogenmod 13, but I really want to go back to Windows (I've been using it on Lumia 620 and 535). Is it again fast like 8.1 was? Is it even worth it?3

So i was writing sql query and every time i was getting "data type mismatch error."
In frustrations i slammed the table and went outside for some fresh air.
After 15 minutes i came back and runs the query again. Voila, it is working now.
My god these queries burned half of my blood today. LOL. 😁1 -

When you forget to push the code on Git, you reload the website and nothing has changed. Go back to code to tweak some more and then push to Git. Now you have to go back to code to remove the extra tweak you've done and test again... 😅

Some cross-platform developers here, who did something with Java on Android from time to time and then had to do something for iOS?
With xCode you feel like I'm back in the 00s again... But in the MacStore it is advertised as "The 1 one developer tool on Mac".6 -
there was a third part of a rant linking previous part, so i tapped it, and second part linked the first one, so i tapped it. read and tapped the system back button. read the second part and tapped system back button again. or maybe (probably) twice by accident, which took me back to rant list.
and then i spent half an hour looking for that third part, but it's nowhere to be seen in the list.

Decide to move to docker for windows from toolbox. Worked well until vpn/s-tunnel all crapped out.
Found out about hyperv, default ethernet, HNS, windows DNS etc etc getting confused.
Removed docker and hyper v, back to working again.

When I found out on x86 you can switch back to real mode without restart to use bios services again. Just do your bit of printing and then switching back to protected mode. That was fun :) *sigh*

So it's been a burden I carried for long.
With the way I set npm up, I unconsciously did the installing process with sudo, and thus can't use npm properly without a sudo.
Is there a rather not convoluted way to set it back up so I don't have to use sudo again for that?11 -
Last week, last sprint. Decided to migrate to latest trunk (it was svn back in the days) of the CMS we used just to get the new great feature. Customer really liked it, but didn’t like the bugs we found in the following weeks.
If you ask me, it worth and will do it again. -

Since the new update I have many issues with loading oft rants.
When I click on a rant, the devRant Logo Smiley Shows up for several seconds, than it Just disappears. And then nothing Happens.
Have to Go Back again, and Back again and sometimes also Close the App before the rant is loading again.
Is it only me?

Not best practice whatsoever because the box was most likely owned, but...
SSH kept defaulting back to port 22 when it wasn't supposed to. So, wrote a cronjob that checked diff between SSH config and backed up SSH config. If different, reload backup. Didn't get locked out again.
Box has of course been replaced.2 -
Android Studio 3.2b4 once again regressed on "No tests found" bug for Kotlin projects.
I guess someone at big G decided to "comment out failing tests for now and come back to it before the release"

The most annoying thing ever: Chrome changing the backspace button to now use Alt+Left. I get that pressing it while losing focus on an input is "terrible", but by just pressing the forward button again, the form is back in its original state! At least add an option to change it back without the need of any extensions! It is driving me absolutely nuts, because I often just press the backspace to go back, instead of going all the way to the top left of my screen and pressing the button. And it keeps messing me up!! It would take me at least a few weeks to get used to this!1

after some months i finally fiddled around with python again. trying to make an executable using 3.7 i finally decided to switch back to 3.6 since pyinstaller was said to be compatible. still nothing works. but instead default directories are messed up. damn.

@dfox I have a strange behaviour. Don't know if it's just me. But when I Click on a rant to open it on "a new window" and I give the rant a "++" and go Back afterwards, the plus icon on the specific rant changed the Color to Red but the counter didn't changed. When I Click the rant again, the counter and the Color is correct. But if I go Back again, only the Color remains, not the counter.
Does anybody else made this experience?

Playing Minecraft 1.12.1 on my private server, everything going fine. Time for lunch, I close the game and come back later.
Restart the game, try to connect to my server again:
"Failed to connect to server
java.lang.NullPointerException: group"
Won't connect anymore now.

Nothing quite so frustrating as intellij resetting your code styles. You put them back as best you can and they get put back to default again.
So you log in to every computer you use, disable settings sync, and do it AGAIN only to find some of your code styles settings aren't even available anymore. So now you have to be extra careful formatting a document doesn't change things you've had just the way you wanted for years.
But realistically, what other option does a person have?6 -
