My friend silently quited his job. He simply stopped coming to work and that is OK, because his contract expired last Monday. He worked for very bad company, where everyone was braging about how awesome dev they are and know everything better than him. I've just installed Linux Mint KDE and while it feels a little stiff, I don't know any linux that's better.

I love materializecss.com .. I love the concept and I don't know why, but I like it ways better than bootstrap. Materialize looks kinda fresh to me - not the classic Material Design. Aaaaaand it's very easy to work with it.

I already know some of the basics and have made a few minor projects but I really want to advance. We interviewed some candidates for a dev position some weeks ago and, knowing the environment isn't that challenging (at least for me) I voted against the better curriculums because I know they would be frustrated fast, I said that. But I didn't say it was because it's shit here... Of course.... I really just want the good devs to be better then they can be here.... What do you think?

I don't know if I can be developer anymore. After I went to high school (one of the best in Poland) everything seems to collapse. My grades are poor. Especially on math and physics, but surprisingly everything Computer Science related is better than average. I also know how to code and I don't struggle with math used while programming. Heck, I even made my first game at the age of 10 in Visual Basic. I just love programming, computer science, etc, but after I went to high school I just don't know anymore...

I'm making a devRant API wrapper for Dart. The point? None! Just to get better at the language and mostly make my own life easier. Open source or not, seems like I'll be the only one to use it. Or am I? Is anyone else (I know ewpratten is) using Dartlang?

It`s better to have an error than to have your app run but not working as wanted. Like in games, you know you`re on the right path if enemies show up, like the errors here.

I still wonder which one is better to fully learn/understand. I know to code something in both, I know about the different way of how they handle memory and I know about some of their use-cases, but then again... this stupid question still pops out:

I've seen far worse people doing what I'm doing, applying terrible practices and still being valued af.

Even if I do smth wrong after doing all the research and alternatives' analysis I know I'll do a proper post-mortem RCA, document it and learn from it, as a result I'll make a better choice to fix the problem and I'll know better next time.

I think I'm alright compared to them. So I don't wory about being an impostor.

Learning by good examples is a good approach. Learning by bad ones might be even better. The "good ones" are yet to fail and be replaced by better (or worse) ones. The "bad ones" are already failing and you can learn WHY you should not be doing it like that and HOW should you do instead to solve the problem.

Learning from good examples only works well if you know the back-story, all the WHYs and HOWs. People usually don't :)

Nothing better than the full power of a decent text editor to edit directory content.
I know quite some multi-file-naming tools, but they are all crap compared to dired.

A no-brainer job in data input with security, stability and a chance of promotion or transfer to another area IT related far away in the future...

An intership of one year, in systems analysis, with a 30% better salary but no guarantees after that...

Someone wrote some error handling middleware for the whole application.
Then someone wrote some default classes for HTTP errors; BadRequest, Unauthorized and so on.

If I didn't know any better, I'd think throwing one of these default errors would give the proper status code, instead of default everything to 500.

But alas, I do know better.

I don’t really regret anything because I’m extremely happy with my current situation, but maybe I should’ve gone for a CS degree to make my life a bit easier. But who knows if it would’ve made things better or worse, I’ll never know.

Even while quite experienced, I do keep messing names up:

I do know that last example is better with autocomplete but my head thinks the other way. I find myself frequently renaming functions in the end.

And just before 3 day of joining i got far better offer from company y.

Doing another FE assignment these days. In this one they have some clear requirements and some not so clear ones ex. "make the existing code better". And it's for a team lead position so I have to pretend I know what I'm doing instead of just implementing the feature they want.

Most of the stuff I know comes from debugging other people's code. When working on someone else's project, I try to understand what their code is doing and think how I could make it better and if it's possible to extend the functionality to make it do other things as well.

A fellow PHP dev I know implies procedural php is better in any way shape or form than OOP as it increases readability...

The better question is which one didnt I get through code?

My best and first real friend was doing an internship in the same company as I. Via her I know all my current friends.

You might think that I'd know better and stop caring about the design while prototyping, but I still can't help it work 4 times as long on the layout than the actual logic

Right now everything is a CMS. And I hate it. It lets people who don't know what they're doing, think they know what they're doing and make a mess for the real developers.

All I can hope for us some huge educational effort so that if you want to use WordPress you can, but know that there are much better options.

Every change has to be approved ahead of time anyway and its literally my job to keep this website running. I don't need you poking around breaking stuff.

I question EVERYTHING. I question why things are done a certain way, I ask questions on things I know, and don't know. Learning and increasing the depth of knowledge is the best way to become a better developer.

I hate people who own crypto and think they're some futurist tech elite. You don't know how the price will fluctuate in the future so stop thinking you're some goddamn fucking wizard. Worst documentation I have ever dealt with is my own. I have gone back to programs, looked at it, and went, what the heck is even this. I've broken business critical programs just because I didn't know the extent of what I was changing. I've gotten better, because of events like that. OMG!!!!

If only more devs would use short, yet concise, modern constructs instead of archaic ones.

For example in C#: using lambdas, extension methods, LinQ,.. much easier to read through if you know how these work, rather than having to spend all day scanning tedious for-loops and over-engineered classes your colleagues wrote who don't know any better.

For everybody who's had to start job hunting for their first real programming job, I have a few questions.

Is starting to apply for jobs 4-5 months ahead a good idea or is it better to wait it out with a 2-3 month time frame? I'm graduating in June 2019.

Is it better to apply for jobs with a search field of "junior developer" or to be more specific like "Jr Java web dev/Jr node.js"?

I know a lot of job descriptions are just company wishlists and not real indicators of skill. I have enough job experience to know how that part of the world works.

My aim is to try for Chicago(go Cubs) or New England, maybe Boston or NYC. I'd say I have a better shot with Chicago being just a 4 hour drive from home base. But, you never know. This is my first real shot at a job in this field so I'm trying to keep my expectations in check.

Hopefully I can get something to work before rumblings of the 2020 election start in my home state. 🙄

Should I learn Angular 2 or Vue 2?

Not asking which one is better, but which one suits my need better:

I want to move from PHP to nodejs frameworks; I know Vue cause it's famous in the Laravel community, but don't know about the node/js community. I heard Angular 2 is hard, but I'm changing my dev stack so might as invest some time in it. So which one should I pick?

Also, what's a good nodejs framework for starters (who aim to build production-ready apps) (also, not planning on doing mobile apps so no need for cross platform js frameworks).

It's usually better when:
