This is not a rant, but I just wanted to share some good news! My brother and I have launched an app called Programmer’s Music. It contains our favourite music tracks and tracks suggested by some of our developer/creative colleagues. It’s for listening to music while coding. We have also integrated Pomodoro time management method in it. It’s ad-free and FREE. :) Please check out the app at https://promusic.tech/2mJrw8A. Feel free to leave an honest feedback.
Please feel free to leave us a message with your favourite tracks and we will add them. Please share it, follow on Twitter and/or like our Facebook page. Thank you so much!
Thank you, everyone.

Signed up for an Android course at my uni and expected to have some fun with Android Studio and modern app development technologies...
Turns out that we're working with Blockly (no coding). We will write our exam with Blockly. The course is mandatory and I cannot opt out.
I've been a dev since 7 years and I am dead inside already.13 -
Had lunch with my girlfriend today. After we had eaten I was just browsing Devrant and she (without looking at what I was doing) she said "Let's go, you can rant about coding somewhere else".7

So, today I was at my college library, working on an Haskell project that I have for my Functional Programming class. Library's packed and no seats are available, when the lady that works there passes behind me and says:
"There's people that want to study, if you're gonna be playing on your laptop please leave."
What? Excuse me? Are we in the 21st century or what?
How does a lady that works at a library, on an Engineering College, for more than 10 years, doesn't...
Screw it, I just laughed so hard and proceeded working.
Oh and by the way, first time posting on here!12 -
$ rant --ridiculous
So today my beautiful and glorious presence was asked to a meeting, I was supposed to present the hosted platform for a project, well, the meeting took place in a building I had never been in so I got lost, when I arrived the design team were presenting a completely different design that what they had given me, which I had spend 10+ hours cleaning and organizing and integrating with the code, and during the whole time I was there I was never involved in the conversation, so basically I was pulled out of my coding liar for nothing oh and because who doesn't like a good ending ... I crashed on my way home after the meeting. Cool day huh?3 -

I've worked for about two months at my (first) job. Its amazing.
We create audio/video software for the products we make.
There are 9 programmers besides me, I'm the only junior. And I'm still learning my way around the code, but they still value my input.
We only do stand ups for 5-10 min, like it should.
One if my colleagues helps me often when I have questions, so I've nicknamed him ducky.
My pm is awesome, he's great at coding and a great manager.
When we work overtime, the department pays for delivery food and drinks.
And we've already gone on 2 trips with the department, mountain biking and a BBQ.
I love my job and I hope that I'll soon be good enough to ask less questions.3 -
So yesterday, literally just hours after i basically said on somebody elses rant "friends are overrated," i ran into a friend i havent seen in over a year and we ended up chatting for an hour after she gave me a ride home. I was in such a good mood after and I realized its the first socializing ive done outside of talking to work people or my partner in over a month. I like to spend most of my time alone, and since i discovered coding i try to spend every spare second writing code, but it turns out a social life is actually really important 😯😯3

tl;dr: spent 12 hours creating an api for a job interview challenge. Got rejected after 4 weeks with no real feedback, and all I can do is rant!
So I was in the interview process with a company that was a great fit for my background.
Got through a couple of phone screens, and was given a coding challenge consisting of writing a web API with a couple of endpoints and a filter function.
I'm like, ok no problem, I happen to have created apis for some mobile apps in the past, and I pick Django rest framework to get the job done.
Implemented it on a Sunday, wrote a medium size Readme.md and some unit tests and submit. Took almost four weeks and a partial resubmission to get a rejection with no specific feedback.
Now I'm shamelessly butthurt and I have nothing else to do but rant! Worse part is I looked back at the code and in my opinion is solid AF, so I put it on my public GitHub cause fuck it!6 -

So i asked my boss, if i can get a keyboard in QWERTY layout, because of the given reasons.
He replied nicely: Yes, I will ask the hardware management.
5 minutes later i got a mail: Here is your harware order, you will get it soon.
It's not much, but that was fast and nice :)

Long rant ahead.
Holy shit is this hard.
I'm not a dev, but I'm working really hard to become one. I come home from work every day at 7:00pm and study between 3 and 5 hours of coding, and finally I'm starting to make decent responsive web pages. I got excited, finally the studies are paying off and I guess I got carried away and told a "friend" about it.
"What?, But making web pages its fucking easy anybody can do web pages! I did mine with dreamwiever, is that even considered development"
And there goes my self steem holy shit..I know, I know its not development, Im not a programmer neither do I pretend to be one but holy shit.
I guess I wish some people would anderstand the amount of effort that can go into an app or web..21 -

Rant from my old company:
CEO decided he could cut costs by outsourcing to cheap devs in other countries.
Does this, the new hires are super incompetent. We're now paying for a whole team that is adding work cause they keep fucking up.
Leadership is super happy with the "savings" (which is basically just the team here working harder to fix everything).
All the smart people start leaving, leading to a downward spiral.
Last I heard, one of my junior co-workers had been promoted to senior (he hardly had any coding experience).
Fuck them all8 -
I'm in that weird spot where the more I study programming, the more I realize I know next to nothing. I get pretty demotivated at times because it can be so overwhelming to study for hours, finally understand a topic... only to find out the next thing is even worse and there's literally thousands of things to learn, from languages themselves, to rules, best practices, paradigms and so on and so forth.
How do you guys deal with this? Do you even have the same problem?10 -

I just had my worst hackathon so far and need to puke my whole toxic hatred, the rant will be full of hate so be warned. (I just don't want to let it go on my girlfriend, but I need to shout it out loud somewhere)
First of all, it is alright to be a beginner at a hackathon. It is also alright to not know that much about coding and want to learn. But it is not alright to lie about your skill, pretend to be a senior programmer and waste my fucking time.
Don't even fucking dare to say your are "fit" in Android development if you just have done some foobar tutorial on YouTube, don't even bother to read the document and have literally non existent knowledge about computer science.
Why the fucking hell do you need to pretend to be a seasoned programmer if you are just a bloody beginner? I mean you are in a hackathon full of computer nerds so soon or later your impostor ass will be debunked so what is the point?
And the other guy. Why the fucking hell did.'t you say that you just begin Python for 3 months? You are not a fucking developer if you just started coding for 3 fucking months. Learn some fucking coding before starting with machine learning you fucking punk ass bitch script kiddie.
Alright, maybe I was too naive to not check my teammates' background before make a team with them. Fuck me and my fucking stupid ass. My dumb ass monkey brain fell for big mouths, I deserved the headache right now and none less.

I love coding, solving challenges or making something. But the current state of most of the jobs in the industry is sad, specially in this part of the world. I am stressed out and depressed when stuck in a never ending daily grind.
There are days when I seriously consider the idea of leaving the industry and start my own restaurant or cafe. It feels like coding for fun and doing something else for a living could be better.
Am I overthinking this? Are there any other people who are feeling the same?14 -

Not a rant, just a tought:
I was thinking, how amazing is to work at software industry, I mean, is there any other field of work where you can start without knowing little to nothing of the thing you are going to work with?
Got hired to work with a friend of mine in his uncle's company, started as a technician, providing support to clients, after that, started coding little windows applications using c#, even tought, I didn't know shit about it, time passed and we needed a mobile application, then when I realized I was already coding for Android in Java even though I didn't know nothing about it too.
It's just, you can do whatever you want if you will... It's amazing! I love doing what I do. -

I'm an idiot. I freely admit this. I spent a solid 3 hours on a new endpoint in a WCF service, only to have it looked upon and told to fix it. I knew that the service I was calling didn't work like that. I did, I knew it. I didn't think about it while coding the endpoint, but I knew it. At least the changes only needed to happen in one file, and only took about 25 minutes with tests and all. But damn it, I knew better. I looked at my buddy, straight in the eye, and told him "Told you I was an idiot." He laughed, I laughed, the table laughed, we killed the table. It was a great time!1 -

I love static sites and fancy new frameworks. Had an interview some time ago at a medium sized company. They specifically wanted someone to build static sites and introduce the company to Vue and Gridsome.
I got really excited for my first project. It was a wordpress site and I had to build a custom WP theme for it. Not exactly what I expected. Also I had no prior PHP knowledge, nor any experience with Wordpress. So I got really upset, because it wasn’t the technologies I was used to.
The first week was hard, I wanted to quit. But once something clicked. And I realized I know this. This is not PHP, not Wordpress, not Vue, but just simply a programming language. At the core everything programming language is the same. PHP became comfortable, Wordpress conventions didn’t bother me. I realized I can use great technologies with WP too. I get to know twig, added some sass, compiled everything nicely with webpack. And after a month I have a beautiful, fast and efficent site. I love it.
I realised that I don’t love the languages and frameworks. I love coding itself. I love creating efficent and reliable, clean code. No matter the architecture.
And my advice for you is to stop hating particular languages and serious debates on what is better, and hating your job when you can’t code in your new shiny framework. Love coding itself, because it’s a wonderful activity. We are creators, we are artists. Not <insert specific programming language here> developers.16 -
Rant PART 2 [FINAL-inspirational]
In my previous rant I posted what was happening in my life. And now I want to share how it all unfolded.
To remember some things, I was doing a mobile project for school and it was a group assignment. My group was so disperse that I ended up doing all by myself. And in the middle of this my gf and I were fighting.
I spent the last two days coding all day during work (I do coding internship for the college I go to, so my boss was cool about me doing the project during work) and I ended up forgetting what day it was today (today is a holyday, I thought I had to go to work because I forgot). It was such an intense two days that while coding I was forgetting variable names, table row names (I literally spent half an hour on my API trying to find a solution, when the solution was that I was using `seller_fk` on the API, but in the database was `seller_id`) and my mind was imploding. I asked my boss for help on the database (he's really good at it) and my teachers to help me. But everything paid off.
Yesterday I started coding at 8am and ended up finishing the project at 9:28 pm (the day before yesterday was the same thing), 2 minutes before the class of the project to start! I was able to finish the project, finally! But what really remarked me was that from all the groups that were in like 4-5 people, I was the only one who delivered the project that day. All other groups are going to have to deliver the project next week with reduced project grade, while I got 100% of the grade because I delivered on the date.
God is good!
Also my gf and I are good now. We are kinda still recovering emotionally, but are now more respectfull to each other, so I guess something good can comeout of bad things.
Happy coding everyone and never give up!
If I made it out of this whole mess so can you! :)1 -
College rant:
I have finals next week. I am sitting here learning about things which have no benefit to my career. My college requires me to take Calculus based physics 2, which makes no sense to me at all! I do appreciate physics however I would much rather be coding. In my CS courses you learn theory which is fine, however very impractical. I last October I realized how much more you need to do and a degree just won't cut it. I spend about 50 hours a week learning TDD, git, hashes all this stuff that is not taught in school. Then on top of this I'm learning pointless crap that if I ever needed in a real world situation I would go to Kahn Academy or simply Google it. I'm upset because I have to stop coding for the week to study information I will forget 2 weeks from now, and most likely never use again. I have a job someone offered me which will be extremely beneficial to my career however I have to wait a week to even look at it. I'm just bitter.23 -
We might achieve world peace one day and still won't have agreed over indentation.
Indentation = TAB. Just 1 character (N spaces = N characters = more disk space, duh!). And then each dev can chose their own TAB width (in spaces) in their IDE of choice. Beautiful.11 -
Hi, some time ago I was looking for a good app on Play Store and Bam! I found devRant. I opened it and the first rant I saw was from aswinmohanme. It was an image of Marilyn Monroe, but somehow created with circles, hope you understand me. I thought this is a great opportunity to test my dev skills so I opened Visual Studio and started coding. Today, after 2 days od work, I finally done it. It was written in C# and I have to say, I'm very proud od my child :^)

Today I decided that I will quit my internship.
So mamy things are mismanaged and my supervisor avoids helping me. I'm not gonna even rant about shitty coding practices, or rather, lack of them.
Now out of 10 ppl team I'm sitting alone in the office because everybody, apart from me, can work from home. When I asked why do I have stay in the office - this is to provide me the best placement experience (wtf). So I sit here, knowing that even if I send an email with a technical questions, I will not get an answer. Atm, can't even give a fuck about trying to be productive. I'm so tired with these fake smily faces that cannot manage a single intern but expect me to do everything without any help.5 -

Coding is like having superpowers.
For instance: For school i have to read 8 books and I have limited time and motivation. What I did? I wrote a program that filters the text from a pdf or epub and converted it to spoken text with gtts (Google Text To Speech).
Now all I have to to is to listen to the story and relax..5 -
I AM TIRED
warning: this rant is going to be full of negativity , CAPS, and cursing.
People always think and they always write that programming is an analytical profession. IF YOU CANNOT THINK IN AN ANALYTICAL WAY THIS JOB IS NOT FOR YOU! But the reality could not be farther from the truth.
A LOT of people in this field whether they're technical people or otherwise, just lack any kind of reasoning or "ANALYTICAL" thinking skills. If anything, a lot of of them are delusional and/or they just care about looking COOL. "Because programming is like getting paid to solve puzzles" *insert stupid retarded laugh here*.
A lot of devs out there just read a book or two and read a Medium article by another wannabe, now think they're hot shit. They know what they're doing. They're the gods of "clean" and "modular" design and all companies should be in AWE of their skills paralleled only by those of deities!
Everyone out there and their Neanderthal ancestor from start-up founders to developers think they're the next Google/Amazon/Facebook/*insert fancy shitty tech company*.
Founder? THEY WANT TO MOVE FAST AND GET TO MARKET FAST WITH STUPID DEADLINES! even if it's not necessary. Why? BECAUSE YOU INFERIOR DEVELOPER HAVE NOT READ THE STUPID HOT PILE OF GARBAGE I READ ONLINE BY THE POEPLE I BLINDLY COPY! "IF YOU'RE NOT EMBARRASSED BY THE FIRST VERSION OF YOU APP, YOU DID SOMETHING WRONG" - someone at Amazon.
Well you delusional brainless piece of stupidity, YOU ARE NOT AMAZON. THE FIRST VERSION THAT THIS AMAZON FOUNDER IS EMBARRASSED ABOUT IS WHAT YOU JERK OFF TO AT NIGHT! IT IS WHAT YOU DREAM ABOUT HAVING!
And oh let's not forget the tech stacks that make absolutely no fucking sense and are just a pile of glue and abstraction levels on top of abstraction levels that are being used everywhere. Why? BECAUSE GOOGLE DOES IT THAT WAY DUH!! And when Google (or any other fancy shit company) changes it, the old shitty tech stack that by some miracle you got to work and everyone is writing in, is now all of a sudden OBSOLETE! IT IS OLD. NO ONE IS WRITING SHIT IN THAT ANYMORE!
And oh my god do I get a PTSD every time I hear a stupid fucker saying shit like "clean architecture" "clean shit" "best practice". Because I have yet to see someone whose sentences HAVE TO HAVE one of these words in them, that actually writes anything decent. They say this shit because of some garbage article they read online and in reality when you look at their code it is hot heap of horseshit after eating something rancid. NOTHING IS CLEAN ABOUT IT. NOTHING IS DONE RIGHT. AND OH GOD IF THAT PERSON WAS YOUR TECH MANAGER AND YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO THEM RUNNING THEIR SHITHOLE ABOUT HOW YOUR SIMPLE CODE IS "NOT CLEAN". And when you think that there might be a valid reason to why they're doing things that way, you get an answer of someone in an interview who's been asked about something they don't know, but they're trying to BS their way to sounding smart and knowledgable. 0 logic 0 reason 0 brain.
Let me give you a couple of examples from my unfortunate encounters in the land of the delusional.
I was working at this start up which is fairly successful and there was this guy responsible for developing the front-end of their website using ReactJS and they're using Redux (WHOSE SOLE PURPOSE IS TO ELIMINATE PASSING ATTRIBUTES FOR THE PURPOSE OF PASSING THEM DOWN THE COMPONENT HIERARCHY AGIAN). This guy kept ranting about their quality and their shit every single time we had a conversation about the code while I was getting to know everything. Also keep in mind he was the one who decided to use Redux. Low and behold there was this component which has THIRTY MOTHERFUCKING SEVEN PROPERTIES WHOSE SOLE PURPOSE IS BE PASSED DOWN AGAIN LIKE 3 TO 4 TIMES!.
This stupid shit kept telling me to write code in a "functional" style. AND ALL HE KNOWS ABOUT FUNCTIONAL PROGRAMMING IS USING MAP, FILTER, REDUCE! And says shit like "WE DONT NEED UNIT TESTS BECAUSE FUNCTIONAL PROGRAMMING HAS NO ERRORS!" Later on I found that he read a book about functional programming in JS and now he fucking thinks he knows what functional programming is! Oh I forgot to mention that the body of his "maps" is like 70 fucking lines of code!
Another fin-tech company I worked at had a quote from Machiavelli's The Prince on EACH FUCKING DESK:
"There is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to conduct, or more uncertain in its success, than to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things."
MOTHERFUCKER! NEW ORDER OF THINGS? THERE 10 OTHER COMPANIES DOING THE SAME SHIT ALREADY!
And the one that got on my nerves as a space lover. Is a quote from Kennedy's speech about going to the moon in the 60s "We choose to go to the moon and do the hard things ..."
YOU FUCKING DELUSIONAL CUNT! YOU THINK BUILDING YOUR SHITTY COPY PASTED START UP IS COMPARABLE TO GOING TO THE MOON IN THE 60S?
I am just tired of all those fuckers.13 -

I code at work and i code at home, and while i consider myself decently fit and observe decent routine regarding standing up regularly at work, my lower back is still all kinds of fucked. (Facet Joint Disease - look it up if you are bored)
This is SUPER common in our field and i figure most of you here are working more and more from home, from you couch probably. This is killing your back, and let me tell you, coding is freaking difficult when you feel like the thousand knives of the management layer is in your back literally instead of metaphorically.
You will be sitting in the same damn chair/set of chairs for the majority of rest of your life, make sure its good, preferably before your back is screwed.5 -

My first rant. My very "african" dad just told me coding is for people who want an excuse to sit in front of a computer all day. An excuse for laziness.
it's funny coming from someone who never paid a single attention or gave me a single penny to support me 😪11 -

So family doesn't really know coding. Just me and my little sister. But then my dad suddenly made jokes with loops and stuff. I have no idea where he learned it. They're not actually accurate but I really love it when he does that.2 -
YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY IT IS HARD TO GET A JOB AS JUNIOR DEV? This is because you don't need any knowledge about coding to get the fucking degree!!
I would love to work harder but it should meen something if you own the fucking paper!
Sorry got triggerd after reading another rant!8 -

I hate whenever people take hobbies and other things that aren't personality traits and try to make it a personality trait.
Your sexuality isn't a personality trait.
Your diet (looking at you *obnoxious* vegans) isn't a personality trait.
Coding isn't a personality trait.
Your race isn't a personality trait.
I'mma end this rant with a !rant tho.
I know they're obnoxious asf but oh my God mechanical keyboards are one of the most amazing sounds on this earth. Sometimes I'll type just to hear that beautiful sound.10 -
Messed Up my first Coding Interview and that too of Google!
My first rant.
The first question was not an easy one. I cracked it though. Happy. Very Happy! I had 40 minutes left for the second question. And then came the nightmare. Okay, my foolishness.
I compiled my code. Compilation error.
Declared variables. Compilation Error!
Imported Libraries. Compilation Error!
Changed vector to an array. compilation Error!
Checked the loop for edge cases. Compilation Error!
Cannot use an IDE too. Tab's change is not allowed.
My score was still ZERO and I had only 15 minutes left.
Then lazily my eyes went to the language selected. It was C. I wrote the code in C++.
I mean HOW CAN I BE SOOOO STUPID??
I was coding in an entirely different language!
But..But, the story doesn't end here.
Next, I copied the code and switched languages. NOOO, my code was lost. I couldn't paste my code!!
I checked the timer- 5 minutes left.
Somehow, I managed to rewrite the code. And submitted it at the last minute.
I have no idea what will be the results. I just solved 1/2 questions.
SAD but FRUSTRATED at my stupidity :(5 -
I broke my keyboard while coding.
My mom was like.. u don't treat things with respect.

In the office, sometimes we order food for lunch.
Me: *goes outside the office to make the call*
*Coding partner arrives while I'm on phone*
Me: *realize that I forgot to ask him if he wanted food* Hey dude, do you want to order something?
Him: *thinks* Nah, I'm fine, I brought my own lunch
Another Guy: That's good because we already called!
Me: Yeah, but it doesn't matter, I can call and tell them "Order++"
Him: Nah dude, tell him "++order", because maybe he'll bring the orders then go back and realize that he missed one

New year is the only +1 I do not give a fuck about. All it means is I am one year closer to death, so I will smoke one more cigarette after the last, one more cup of coffee with far too much sugar, and I will keep coding one more line after the other, and frankly it is just to distract me from the fact that there is always another +1, one more person to hate, one more word spoken, all so I can get to through one more year. So fuck the new year because there will always be another. But I won't always get a +1 on a rant.5

!rant, but some kind of story
I work as a lead dev on a gmod server of a pretty big german community. With the fun stuff, there come the duty‘s to help Jr. Devs or even help people get into Developing. The part, where you help junior devs is always fun, but what I find interesting is the part where you help people learn coding. It’s not easy work, but you learn more every “lesson”. I catch myself exploring and learning something new, even if I know the topic. For me it’s a new journey every time.
Not sure if there are many people who can relate but I just wanted to tell my side on it.1 -
Recruiter reaches out to me, he says he saw my LinkedIn and thinks I'd be a great fit.
I say ok and send my resume.
He gets me a phone screen. I do it, I think I do a pretty good job. (I'm able to answer all the questions well, I think I'm onto the coding interview for sure.)
A couple days later I get a generic rejection email.
I'm not sure what happened. They had my resume, I know I did well on the technical questions (I do that kind of thing for my current job all the time.)
No idea why I'm rejected. If it was something about my experience, they could have seen that from my resume. If it was something from my phone screen, I have no idea what it could have been.

Our implementation director got bored since yesterday. So, I decided to let him barge in with my colleague and let him manipulate the audio speakers. I am facing the holy trinity or something.
Cool? eh? No no, not as cool as the holy trinit holding excalibur.
One of the info is Gender : Male, Female. And they state that we must export the excel with selected gender by drawing a circle over the choice.
Not Gender : Male
But Gender : (Male) , Female
Consider my bracket as circle.
They are not even in seperate cells. So now I am spending days to draw a fucking circle over a text in excel export using php. Still failing. FML.

Do you know what really grinds my gears? Those dreaded "404 Page Not Found" errors. It's like a digital black hole, sucking your users into a vortex of frustration.
And don't get me started on inconsistent coding standards. It's like trying to decipher hieroglyphics written by different ancient civilizations. Why can't we all just follow the same conventions?
Oh, and software updates that break everything! You spend hours perfecting your code, only for a new update to come along and wreak havoc. It's like the universe is conspiring against developers.
But hey, despite the rants, we developers are a resilient bunch. We thrive on solving problems, no matter how infuriating they can be. So, here's to the endless debugging, the endless coffee, and the endless love-hate relationship with coding. We wouldn't have it any other way.

Coding has brought me into new communities and is the reason I have some new friends. I have to say, the best part is knowing how things work. I love knowing how this rant is sent to a remote devRant server thru a socket. How my rant gets divided up into an array of characters, each just a string of 0’s and 1’s. How my rant is stored in a database. How the devRant server connects everyone, and how everyone can (if they have to) use a VPN if it’s blocked, etc. And of course, how it’s all done securely. It’s great having that confidence going into the future knowing that you’ll be relevant and you have technological security. I love talking with people and explaining how things work. How when people say “stop acting so smart, you don’t know anything about X,” which to I reply “do you know how many fucking Xs I made.” Coding is great.

After I stopped helping people coding online few months ago, because I was getting literally spammed 24/7 by everyones shitty multi-million dollar ideas, I introduced few of my classmates in to coding. Anyone else who can't focus while listening to music? I can't grasp how that's not annoying to people.
The sound of silence.
For real, the best coding flows happen then.
If there is something that I can hear and process, my train of thought behaves like a dream behaves when you wake up in the morning.
Even worse are children, humming, whistling or munching as the ONLY sound in that silence, Im scorching inside when that happens.

Was thinking about the things I miss thanks to the 'rona whilst coding. Restaurants are a big one (I haven't had an oyster in a dog's age). We've lost a ton of businesses recently, most of which will never be back. As much as I Uber eats and doordash, restaurants lose money on those mechanisms frequently due to the up to 30% order commission.
There's definitely a potential market for an epic games-store style player in that segment who wants to compete on cost and fees. Hard part would be the political weight that's coming down on those businesses now. It's a really shitty time to be in most businesses.
Tl;Dr There will never be a better name for a donut shop than "Hole Foods." RIP2 -

Linux experts, please read if you have time
Seeing all the posts ranting about Ubuntu, I'm starting to wondering : I have a laptop on Ubuntu that I set for my courses at school, I took Ubuntu because I could try at school with VMs, liked it and because between this and Linux Mint, I wasn't aware of all those distributions.
So my reflexion is : Since I've started my internship, which would be the final semester (I'm in last year of studying), I use this computer mostly for personal coding projects, which aren't ambitious and I sometimes use my Windows too, so my computer is a kind of switch-not-so-often.
Should I keep it to Ubuntu or should I try to install something else ?
I've heard of Solus, which got my curiosity, and Arch Linux, but this one is not want I think I need. But seeing all those distributions here made me confuse, I dunno if I should upgrade something that's a kind of placeholder for coding and do stuff when the Windows (which is my main laptop) is busy doing things.
Have any suggestions ?21 -

Not really a rant about coding itself, but it's a rent, I'm a dev, so here ya go:
I have a German citizenship, but am living in Hungary temporarily. Also, I need internet. So I go to the website of UPC, register, order a package, etc. Just as I would do anywhere else....... Except for the fact , that they just called me that I should send them my passport, because they neither accept my German ID, my Hungarian registration card or anything else. I DON'T HAVE A PASSPORT YOU MOTHERFUCKERS! I LIVE IN THE EU, I DON'T NEED A PASSPORT!!
But the best part was when they told me I should just ask my mother to make the contract for me, because she does have a Hungarian citizenship. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??!6 -
not really a rant but the more i code, the more fun it gets. i havent really dived this deep into coding and allowing myself to take most of my time doing it has made it more interesting for me. now i want to learn more and start creating personal projects aside from real university projects. people may think its weird that i have been devoting a lot of my time writing code, but i guess they just dont understand the difference of coding for grades and coding for fun.

So, now i let him make all decisions. no opinion from me. a few things are going to shit because of him... fuck it. i had it. as long as I get paid. fuck him.
this is probably common... sorry for the rant.7 -
My first rant. Woohoo!
Honestly I do the whole shebang ussualy depending on what the needs are from network to servers to coding because for some reason nobody has any technical experience where I work.
I just started app development for a gamedev startup and I am in sheer awe of the amount of transpiling/compiling etc that needs to be done for an multiplatform app for iOS and android with js(x)/typescript, html, css.
I remember when I could just write some spaghetti code to make it working by following a couple of tutorials. Then refractoring and testing it for a couple of hours and be done with it. push it into production.
Now I am lost having to learn OOP, functional programming, reactjs, react native, express, webpack, mongodb, babel, and the list goes on and on...
Why not just make a new backend that does all of that in another language which supports all of that.
I have no formal education in programming/coding and the last time I learned JS it was just some if else, switches and simple dom manipulation.
I just want to get to coding a freakin' game but I have to learn JSX for the front and typescript on the backend.
I am this close to going back to ye ol' lamp stack and quitting this job. 😥5 -
How do you guys motivate yourself to finish private side projects?
This is merely a rant about my incompetence to stay motivated until I finished a project just for and by myself... Most of the time I start coding until I figured out how it works and then mostly never touch it again. And this is fucking silly16 -

This is not a rant is more like a general question, first of all some background.
Some time ago I found this repo:
https://github.com/jwasham/...
A repo that list and link all the subjects you need to know with awesome resources to learn as a self-taught student. As the description says is a complete computer science study plan to become a software engineer.
I like the idea and I decided to help as I saw the Spanish translation was in progress.
Then I realized that it wasn't useful for real, as the resources still be in English so I made a propose that can be find as a link in the pull request of the project .
https://github.com/jwasham/...
But now the question :
Would it really be useful for some people to translate this?
I would greatly appreciate your opinion.
Meanwhile I'll continue with the missing with more coffee.4 -

After coding, cooking/ book reading is my favorite hobby.
Before last 3 month I took dcsn to give a shot to my other hobby cooking and pause on coding for few months.
I decided to give 100days to my cafe.
Arranging money and perfect location took 2 months , on 16 july I started my cafe not so fancy, just sweet simple.

I was earning 1000 inr as software developer, i am earning 10000 inr daily . My net profit is 1500inr
Moral of the story

YAAAY,
finished my first small project today!
It was the final project of my semester in coding and because coding isn't the main focus of my studies there's not much expected from us - new Date, sorting a list and using local storage were among the more 'complicated' things we learned...
So most of my mates just develop/design a small portfolio website or something but my team (2 others and me) wanted to do a little more so we built a progressive web app, complete with service worker for offline functionality and so on, that can take pictures using your camera, save them to IndexedDB, display only the images the currently logged in user actually took and much more... and today is the day all bugs (that we found...) are finally ironed out!
Now I know that still is just the very beginning but now I want to learn mooooore!
Am happy, had to rant. :D1 -

WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT SYMFONY DOCUMENTATION. When i'm coding and i'm searching for some info on a function, I DON'T FUCKING WANT A TUTORIAL. I DON'T FUCKING WANT EXAMPLES. I WANT A FUCKING DESCRIPTION OF THAT FUNCTION. WHAT PARAMETERS ARE NEEDED. WHAT CAN I GET IN RETURN. IS IT SO FUCKING HARD TO UNDERSTAND ?
Seriously though, i can't believe actual devs thought this was a good idea. at this point i've been searching for two goddamns hours for a solution to something that should be TRIVIAL, and i'm NOWHERE near a solution. Thanks for my time, Symfony.1 -
Swift SUCKS
Why?
Because of its absolutely useless complexity...
a total simple thing: i have a string and want to concat a integer with it, so:
var x = stringVar + intVar; right? NO
its var x = stringVar + String(intVar);
or getting the index of a element in a array?
var index = array.indexOf(element); thats logic, right??? Not for swift, gotta go with: var index = array.index(of: element); WTF??!!
And all the other shit: nil instead of null, int++? Nope.
And there are SO MANY MORE things, where u just think, Apple really though different........than all normal coding languages.......
I´ll honestly rather learn C and recode Ios or have a look at objective-c...14 -
At first glance, this week's group rant seems perfect for me since I have drunk coded at least 2 to 3 times per month (my TGIFs are usually followed by Saturday morning demo meetings).
However I cannot say I have had any particular "worst" code that I have done so far.
Yea I once formatted and installed some linux distro while drunk and couldn't remember the login info the next morning.
Yea I once exported, imported between dbs from prod and local while drunk and lost this and that data.
Yes I once decided to organize my repositories and somehow deleted some repos without any backup while I was drunk.
I was fine. I somehow solved my way out by either bullshitting or being quiet or fixing without any sleep. Most of the times nobody really comprehend the extent of my actions. So I was fine. Hence I really don't have any particular worst drunk coding experience yet.
Best drunk coding experience?
Well I do not agree that coding while drunk is a pleasurable or fun thing to do. So I don't really have that either.
This week's topic is actually a very tough one although it might seem easy. -

Am just an average guy trying to get my confidences up as a good person/student/professional/whatever. last to last semester when I joined college for a cse degree, i had entered with the brightest face and the biggest smile because of just one thought: "this is where i belong, this is what i want" . i always got excited when i saw little things jumping around in my mobile , calculations being performed instantly, and the day i got my laptop, i knew i want to know every thing of how virtuality works.
I never cared about social life tho, i was a universally lonely introvert single child. Had 2-3 friends in school, who i don't care about much,a lost crush , a great group of home buddies and some friends here and there.
So when i started college i went there with multiple goals: making my career there, finding gud buddies, love again and many more..
But recently, everything is changing: realised that college is a piece of shit, people are always selfish and exploiting, a race is always going on where people are secretly running and you gotta learn by yourself.
So here is the current me: college attendance 37%, not went to gym past 1 week, human interaction last 2 days :2(mum nd dad), whatsapp last message: 4 days ago, sleep timings 10am to 6pm(daytimes lol), currently working on: this project that I took as "my last project that on completing means i know Android, and could code every fucked up app in the market)", which isn't yet completed bcz every-time i learn something in it, i realise their is one more part of the course am following , but i should know because this is useful.
And that makes me more sad :/1 -
Recently I started coding a project for my school with two of my friends. The first one is a person which spends most of his time reading 4chan and joking about Pope, you know this kind of person. The second, Michael, is a really good partner for coding, he's just an opposite of Jedrzej, the first one. Jedrzej used to call people 'cancer' and this kind of sh**. Lately Michael said, that he's mother has breast cancer and he left our conversation on Facebook. Later I told Jedrzej, that he has to tell Michael 'sorry', but he wrote something stupid (doesn't matter what) and the situation only went wrong. At least I told them that they have to bury the hatchet and start working. The only problem here is that Michael and I made 99.7% of our project, Jedrzej only updated README and shared his VPS. I'm a full-stack dev, but our project is on laravel and I don't know what kind of sorcery is this framework so Michael does the back-end. My question to all of you who read this rant - what should I do with lazy Jedrzej?7

Tell me to work with the most critical feature of the project. So critical if not done right people can die! While working on it I find many poorly written requirements, I notify the leads about this. The whole thing is re-scoped and the feature is completed. I expected to become a senior after this but unfortunately only find out they put the blame on me for poorly written requirements that other people had written which I corrected... fml1

I have a question; when I get interrupted while coding (dinner, friends etc) I'm often "stuck" in my head while just thinking about the problem I were to solve in the code. Anyone else have this? Does it have a name and any tips to "let the code go" while not coding?5 -

Landed my first time job as an consultant, while still studying. Hopefully this will go good, only have 4 months left of university.
However, I am surprised of how little coding it actually is... I've been spending my first month just learning a new system, so I can finally go out to a big customer and redo their production system (factories).
Meetings all day, a lot of talking... I kind of dislike it, but also like it. It is a special feeling. I wonder how it will feel in 6 months from now. -

Today is the day, i'll finish up all the contract work that sits on my desk, cash in the money and finish up the free website i made for a befriended gamedev.
I've been sooo angry about other humans over the week but escaping into development and helping the few friendly humans out there is making me calm again.
If anyone of you feels down, grab a tee, clean your desk, take a bath and just start coding silly things, or try to help a mate in need. :-)1 -
Hardware Developing.
My current school project where I build a gps thief lock for my moped had me realized one thing. I don't want to go into Hardware Developing. The first problem took me about 4 months until I finally gave up and solved it differently. And this goes on and on and on. You fixed something and the next day it doesn't work anymore for some reason. I never had this problem when coding. It's fun to do stuff with electronics but coding is just way more rewarding. Anyone else had the same experience?1 -
I`m new to coding. So i`m also new at ranting.
I know i have something to rant about. But my nerd culture is just not yet at the level.
I have been taught by a mate to used linux and started vanilla javascript. We use intellj as IDE.
So i have to speak to this client whose previous IT provider was gonna code his thing with ASP and visual studio!!!
Right?! WTF?!!! But that`s all i got!!!!
Im pretty sure its a wtf?! But i don`t have the rock solid reasons why.
Please ranters help me become better at rantong and tell me i`m not wrong and why ;)9 -

Today I wanted to finish a feature in some Python code I. Working on instead I scope creeped myself a bunch times adding "other cool features" and refactoring working and readable code that didn't need refactoring. Oh and learning about random things on SO and finally giving up on making any more progress for the day and reading devrant.

Who here remembers dateprog.com? If you don't, it was a dating site for devs and those who like devs. I'm tempted to ressurect the damn thing, although not as a dating site but more of a social network (think GitHub + Tumblr). Anyone else think that'd be a good idea? I'm also thinking this'll be more than just my weekend sorted, haha. It'd have to have chat, code repos, GitHub login, etc... what do you guys think?
Also not planning to invade the territory of devRant I was just wondering if anyone was interested. Maybe even some kind of extension to devRant, as a social coding platform? I'm not sure aha. Welp, anyway if anybody's interested drop a comment! :)5 -
Hi my named bluescreen and I'm addicted to coding ....
Feel like I should be at some kind of Coders AA meeting .....
I'm having a few days off work, this is my 3rd day and I'm already twitching because I've not got my daily fix of coding (wife won't let me near a computer when I'm on holiday)
I've never had any kind of addiction except coding. I feel really uncomfortable not doing anything, coding is my job and hobby.
I normally come on here to rant / read posts but today I'm browsing just on the off chance that I see some code ....
I need help ......6 -
[Fairly existential career question] How fulfilling would you say your career in development has been?
[Long rant] for years I had been planning on becoming a rabbi, majored in religious studies etc, until I realized there would be no way out of my rapidly growing debt if I chose to continue on that path. i had to drop out 3 years into my undergrad due to financial issues, and as it is now working full time im barely holding my head above water. I spent a lot of time being sad about it until i decided to change things and started getting into accounting before I discovered coding. I am SO GLAD I discovered coding cause accounting was so boring...Now I'm excited to be going back to school for software development and I'm in a bit of a pink cloud having discovered something thats both exciting/fun/challenging AND lucrative... But i do worry about 5, 10 years in the future, will i still be as stoked about it? Religious leadership was and is something I know i would feel ~fulfilled~ over a lifetime, and while my newly discovered passion for coding literally keeps me up at night getting fired up on solving problems and writing my little newb programs, i think I'm afraid of burnout?
[Tl;dr] I'm making an education+career switch to software development and i wanna know how folks feel about their career years into it, do you still love it just as much? Feel jaded? Regretful? Happy?4 -

I feel like a fraud ...
So I recently joined a mobile dev company as an intern
I submitted the application
Got to coding interview passed the coding interview because thank god it was one of the sums i solved on geeks4geeks
Then came then interview did as best i could
Got the acceptance mail in next 10 mins
First day was chill it's work from home thing
Second day they gave me an app a previous intern had already build its layout and authentication code
But it wasn't working so I reported it so they told me to debug it so I found where the problem was occurring
Now I know the problem but i have no idea how to fix it
They gave me assignment to fix the authentication basically it's taking info creating a json and request an API call
But I feel i cant remember the concepts
I can't remember basic meaning of words the other day i forgot what SSID are
I just I don't know shit
And i feel like I'm going to get kicked soon
I don't understand what the previous guy wrote and i don't know how to fix it
Previously i have built my own apps but not like a real world project like this which works in regards to network management basically an wifi portal kind of Authorization application5 -
Ever tried explaining GitHub to someone? I swear it's like trying to teach a dog to ride a bike. You can try, but it's probably not going to end well.

My monday started with boss calling me at 0730 asking if I could do a support-mission at the offices of the local landfill - this because 2 of the support people had called in sick and we where short on manpower. RIGHT! I said, with a sense of dread and disbelief. ended up spending much of the day there. fixing everything from default reader of pdf to calibration of mouse sensitivity.
It's not like I need to code or anything, since I am working on two different projects and in competition of a third. Finally came back to the office after been at the landfill until lunch and got another support mission; this time internal mission. namely write out from our companys database and import the data to an absolute atrocity called PowerBI so our accountant get the numbers......... FINE!!! I'll do that too, but dont come to me and cry when the project delivery date gets postponed into eternity!!!3 -
First time coding in a team for a larger project. Any tips on how to handle this? We're six programmers and its really hard for us to work together :/
It's my first rant. I love the community :D9 -
That moment I wonder why I haven't wrote any rant for a long time and suddenly realized that it's because I've been coding only about a couple hours a week for the last months.
Basically, I finished all my computer related class and all that is left to finish (before I can get my diploma) are basic courses like philosophy and literature (which at least are interesting).
Now pretty much every day I wake up and I crave to code but I just don't have time to 😐 -

So i was commenting on a rant by some user where we had this conversation about IDEs and editors...
Point: Intellij has an option to set a background to the whole ide which gives coding a unique experience instead of the pale dull solid color background.
Go to Settings > Appearance > Background image is in the main appearance tab click and set the image, position, transparency ... And voila u have a background image on your editor.
Alternative way just go to settings and search for background image12 -

Help/ideas needed
I need ideas of projects to develop in my free time, I'm tired of the old technology and ugly projects from work, I want to develop something new, fun, to feel the excitement of coding again ;)
The field does not matter i'm willing to learn.
And , no , I can get another job, that is not an option because of the special benefits it's offering that I can not find in another company(very flexible schedule, I'm a student and need it).5 -
Hey DevRant!
Not really a rant but a question:
I just got accepted into a coding bootcamp. Have any of you been involved in one? How was it? What would you do to make it a better experience throughout? Any advice or suggestions?
It's full time, six months long and I start in October and I want to make sure I make the most of the experience and absorb as much as possible.
I'm super happy that the course appears to be less just learning JavaScript and more involved in the Computer Science side of things, even including bits about C/C++, distributed systems, algorithms and data structures, software design/testing, cryptography, database management, and computer architecture. It also, of course, covers tons of resume work, interview practice, and networking.
Thanks!5 -

WTF?
TL;DR Integration between software failed so hard I lost 20% of my progress in one hit. Yay! /s
I, being a Fool, signed up to do NaNoWriMo this year (50k words in 30 days of November). I've won it before, and failed it before, and this year was especially stupid as I've got a bigger pile on my plate than usual, what with getting as quickly up to speed on c# and React as I can in prep for starting the new job in December.
I started on a high - 4k on day one, woohoo! To my delight, my writing software Scrivener now had an integration feature to let you update your total word count straight to your account instead of manually entering it. I added my credentials, hit the button, refreshed the page, all updated. So far so good.
Then, on day two, I wrote 1700-ish words. Still good, well ahead of target, took me over 5k. Updated through Scrivener, checked it updated the site, still good.
Then, yesterday, I logged in and added a tiny tiny number of words (brain went blah), and was horrified to discover it had taken 1900 words off my count!
Cue panic as I frantically searched for the missing words, trying to find any evidence of where they'd gone. Gave up after half an hour of futility, bashed out enough to squeak back over 5k, confirmed it had updated.
I'm not unfamiliar with the general stupidity most organisations have on integration - they don't have it, or it's an afterthought, or it's just plain terrible - but this was a ridiculously simple thing to do, I'd have thought? Passing one fucking number and some date/time tracking?
This is what I get for trying to do too many things at once, I guess! -
So you're telling me that I can rant about my coding experience here and get stuff for that too.
I mean where has this been my whole coding life😂
P.S. If you do like it please rant on it😊6 -
Damn, since my last rant where I was complaining about me having big troubles coding stuff when asked by an exercise or given instructions, I feel like I've made huge progress now, by sticking a bit to my "at least 5 exercises a day" routine, now as soon as I code, it comes to me more and more naturally.
I'm so glad I can see the practice really paying off, even thanks to a simple function working great at the first compile makes me feel warm inside even tho it ain't gonna last long.2 -
Gonna rant about graphic design 'cos it's where I started this journey.
The hardest people to design for are creative people, photographers, musicians, artists etc.. because they think graphic design is just a small extension to their existing skills. Please Fuck Off! Also same goes for developers, graphic design is a discipline you have to study and takes years to perfect the art. I find it examples of non designed 'design' every day and it sickens me. Just look around at all the shite van livery, bad logos, shit menus, fucking junk mail etc... sometimes it can be torture....
But I don't think coding is easy, I respect the art and learn constantly, it amazes me how typing some shit can make awesome things happen. Devs rock!1 -

That's the bullshit from yesterday that piled up now. Go and take a shit now
And now im wasting my time writing this rant while shitting the bullshit from yesterday. I hate shitting. But recruiters make me shit so much. Recruiters somehow transfer wirelessly their bullshit onto me so i have to dump the shit somewhere else. Cant hold it in me from the huge mass of the bullshit they have.

I’ve 2 great job opportunities and would like to get some opinions from you guys..
The first position is in my home country, I’ve passed the first interviews and (highly advanced) coding test.
I’d have the possibility to contribute to something big that really matters nowadays.
I would learn about lots of stuff that really interests me (security, embedded systems...)
The second position is in another country, I’ve passed the first interview and just received the coding test.
There I could work on a cool project and I’d definitely learn a lot there, too. But more important is that I love the county, there I really feel like “home”, I love the people and culture.
In case both of them want me, it would be really Hard to make my decision..
What would you do in my situation?
- dream job in a country I don’t necessarily like, neither dislike
- cool job in a country I totally wanna settle down sooner or later (but currently wouldn’t have problems getting the permissions and stuff..)?
Thanks in advance:)1 -

Everything in the www root.
By pixel css.

Just started a side project, helping a friend make his Android app more stable and add a couple more features. We'll release the sources sometime later.
Gotta say, his code is just terrible. And it runs on top of some code written by someone else, and that's even worse.
But I don't know how I got the motivation to spend the whole Saturday cleaning it up, fixing warnings, making abstractions, extracting features to separate classes, converting some stuff to Kotlin, even adding a couple coroutines. It felt good fixing bad code.
Maybe because I have some coding freedom I kinda miss at work.
Maybe because the project is not that big.
Maybe because I know the guy has many skills, coding is just not one of them.
Maybe because that project has some cool in it I can't even describe.
Maybe because that's entirely within my skills but challenging enough to have fun working on it.
Or maybe is just the mood of the moment, and in a week or so I'll lose all the motivation, as it happened too many times.

Anyone interested to see mine and my wife’s culture & technology crossover performance/arts/music project?
The name is UDAGANuniverse. Udagan in Sakha (northeast Siberia) language toughly translates to ‘she shaman’. I met my wife while she was touring in Europe with a traditional Sakha group (I was touring Celtic trad music that time).
The project is incorporating all our interests, artforms and professional skills under a shamanistic aesthetic. Functional Programming, Live Coding and Machine Learning play a big part in my input and live performance role.
First episode of our newly launched podcast:

My personal articles — arts based and touching on functional programming + category theory:

I’ll be posting new articles more specifically on Coding and ML in performance in the next weeks.

I see a lot of people complain about uni degrees and stuff because they don't learn how to code etc. Is this really the standard?
I mean I'm only in fourth semester bachelor and had coding knowledge before starting uni. But we had basic to intermediate java in the first two semester, now learning how to write secure code and OS-Level stuff in C++, we had a module with practical Assembly coding all while still learning all the theory.
At the end of the first semester we had to write a terminal game in Java. I mean of course that's not "real experience" but if you dive in you definitely learn the basics you need to get started in real life.
Or am I wrong completely / just in a weird uni?6 -

I'm not sure if it's good or bad, but lately I've lost that "love" for code, not coding itself, but the code in projects.
Because most of the time the projects are inherited, there is never enough time, It's always a priority. And let's be honest, most of the time programmers don't like others code. (Is it God Complex?).
What I do notice with this "new" philosophy it is that I do not stress when I do not like some development, I ask the "bosses" if there is time to change it or if we continue with how it is. I learn that it should be done better and I continue my life5 -

Kinda’ NOT(x+x) = rant, but still would like to have some way of direct message system in the app, i guess it will be added in the near future but im getting more frustrated by the hour when not being able to communicate directly with a user without a mention publicly and offtopic’ing the main rant’s subject.
Another thing would be cool to have the app in landscape mode without losing its ui/ux integrity. Think “iphone 6” ergonomics when at restful position.
Just realized how monstrous this app could get and be if the team grew and started implementing shit ton of APIs to connect and centralize every coding dev scheme.
And not sure if its okay or not but, I just mentioned myself! XD iMessages dejavu?3 -
I am new to developing and to coding...it's been fun and a challenge. However, this rant has to do with something different, what VPN do most of you all prefer? CyberGhost, NordVPN or ExpressVPN?9

reading most of group rant about "love of coding".
It looks to me as most of people aim at a creative job, like being an artist, maybe a painter like Picasso o Van Gogh.
But they likely are up to an house painter job.
Which is probably not a good example as I'm watching now at the painter in my living room.
So quiet. Spreading the paint very carefully. and quiet. No bosses to scream at him. Satisfaction of a job well done.
And the fucking bill he'll get from me.3 -
Company website created by a third party developers ( paid ) and after a year the new company team does not like the design and asks the inhouse developer hired to create internal apps ( develop office workflow related apps) to change the design of the website and not be paid for it (add new work to the list of works and not be paid extra).
And that they don't want to pay someone to do it again and when the dev ask them what they want in the website , it seems like they are focused on updating content ( which they have access with the wordpress admin panel they have been given ) and a bit of design changes which a dev would do within a few hours and they will have to pay v little for it.
Why does ppl think that devs have all the time in the world to do free stuff !!! and most of the times we are doing more that everyone else in the workplace combined and when we don't do something its like you are not corporating with us, u don't work much and u have too much free time. -
Oh man, I know this isn't the place for videos but this video on why coding sucks is probably the best rant in existence.

rant!
So I've started working on a new web based project with one of my teachers. So he says to me,
"I wont do any of the coding, its all donkey work. Adjusting the text to be in the vertical and horizontal centre and etc etc. I will provide you with the architecture, for now you will be making CRUD operations."
I understand where his frustration comes from after years of experience coding the basics again and again but assigning me some work and labelling that very work as donkey work is not the best way to motivate me! -

There is an applicant for a dev position coming in today for an interview and a short coding exam. I'm looking forward to walking by the meeting room while they are doing the exam and seeing the anxiety on their face while I give a completely useless thumbs up.
Hmm...code compiled. I've earned a coffee break. -
Not really a rant, but I quit the job I hated for one that pays more and will also give me a set schedule so that I can actually get some coding done for once! (Last job had me on random open or close shifts and that shit fucks with your head after a while) I'm so stoked. Looks like I might finish my projects before Christmas after all, whooo!

It's really difficult to stay sane after doing 3hrs of competitive coding plus even after trying so much your code does not run . I really wanna be good at competitive coding but I am horrible. Ahh this is irritating so many hours of thinking shit and nothing workd7

Hello devRant community,
I was away for quite some time.
I hope all you guys are doing okay. Also I am in final year of Bachelors and Goddd is it stressfull?
Its killing me man , so I came here to blow off some steam. Also if you are interested you can checkout my blog.
Started it with the sole purpose of learning more and so that I can crack an interview in next 3-4 months. Lets see how it goes.

Not really a Rant but:
My Productivity Method:
1. Nootropics (Nootrobox Daily, Sprint for 6+ hour work/focus periods)
2. Ketogenic Diet (Ridiculous Energy, Amazing Food Choices, No Crashing, No Cheating!)
3. Moderate Exercise
4. Get Lit (Partying) once a month at least, hard liquors.
5. Nicotine (Vaping 6mg) while coding.
6. Caffeine (Bulletproof Coffee)
7. League of Legends breaks.
8. Weekly Cigar Social with other professionals.
Balance Vice with Virtue is a great combination for getting stuff done.
What keeps you going?2 -
Hey all,
This is no rant, its just a sincere question.
any of you got a good upbeat playlist on youtube you can share for us to listen to while coding...
?? for now i listen to Frog Leap Studios ... Guys amazing9 -

Anyone else wonder how they got into the kind of the coding they're in?
Like, I wanted to make plugins for music software and DAWs and now I do front end web...
I don't even know what fucking language is used for something like that -

In uni I took an experimental physics course which was hard af but a lot of fun, and it was the 1st time I really appreciated science as it’s own perspective, like a completely different way of looking at the world. It was a great experience. I feel the same way about coding, like i see and think and interact with things differently thru the perspective of development and it feels really good to be learning such an honestly world-expanding skill and art 😊😊😊 -
Hah! overclocked gd has made his first mod menu without pc! please give him a round of applause!
after his first rant on being a baby about coding xd
im planning to make this js dungeon game pure js.
after i know alot about js im reverting to typescript then java then C== ! i think this platform and other platforms have helped me on my journey of creating apps and im happy that im making progress =))4 -

Am I the only one that dancing on my chair to disco/house/techno while coding means I finally reached the Flow zone where I'm focused for real3 -
!Rant but kind of a rant.
So I’m currently throwing around the idea of building a messaging application for iOS just to practice coding and what not. It seems like I do a lot of work on it like making sure the login screen works and other stuff but I get burned out pretty easily.
Any tips on how to not get burned out as easily when starting a new project?3 -
Not coding rant
I forgot my student ID today and was trying to enter a building.
Called my friend to swipe me in
Security: nah you can't do that
Me: why, I'm a student here
Security: Weill that student id only shows that he is a student
Me: I can provide you my student ID number and state ID
Security: no, either you go get a new student ID now, or you can't enter the building
Wtf? I've asked other people to swipe me in before and the security didn't day shit
I went home and filed a report against that guy
Straight up abusing his power7 -
Not a rant but where do I start with coding? I have next to no experience as in mandatory classes I wrote myself off as having "no chance".
What language should I learn first? How? With what? Etc
Thanks in advance1 -
I am unable to understand the naming convention. I SUCK IN IT.. CAN'T I JUST NAME MY VARIABLE AND OTHER THINGS LIKE SIMPLY, WHY I HAVE TO USE UNDERSCORE AND ACCURATE NAME FOR IT.
I mean , my variable does tell what is it for then why I need to do that?5 -
Okay so , I asked something about my supervisor about a certain thing in programming. And they were like " do search about it"..... 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂If I find that on internet I would never ask you. You are on the least priority, to ask. Like? Can you be just tell ? You are experienced and I'm industry for years and me who just join 4 days ago....
Tsk tsk5 -
Soon launching a social networking app just for devs. Post Dev memes, Collab, rant, brainstorm over ideas, reach out to anyone for chat, post your cool devspace pictures and earn rewards. Stay tuned!
Ps- I know there are many similar platforms, this is just a project I developed learning coding app development so just don't brag me about the concept. Although, a better UI/UX never hurts!
The project is fully coded by me and am open for Sr. Devs collabs for the project.16 -

I have to choose between a couple of optional classes in my course. Although I'm more into the filmography side, I love coding.. now We have a. Umber of optional subjects, and we have to choose two. I have chosen Motion Graphics as one, now I want to know whether I should take Java as a second class.
is it something I can learn on my own like I learnt PHP, JS, Swift? Or is it something that will really require a class?
If it's something I can do on my own, I can consider taking another class related to cinema.3 -
Lately I am facing this issue. I spend a lot of time and did hard work on some specific thing! but it doesn’t seem to work as it should be, so because of this I am disappointed. I don’t know I should be feeling like this or not, but I am questing myself that I am a good developer or not!
It’s not like that I don’t know stuff, I start working on laravel , few months ago. It’s been 4 months, and I already develop a backend of the whole app, but it was not that complex. Recently , I am assigned to this new project, which is very complex, and It was already made by some other developer, so I am new to this and I don’t know how it actually works. But I was assigned to add new functionality to it, and It was kinda complex, like maths and calculation and depending upon the data coming and updating calculations changed. So, I almost work hard and over time for this, and I think I did a good job, but turns out it didn’t. So, I worked again on this, but again turns out it didn’t work out as it suppose to be.
So , After all of my hard work, the code was not right, and that led me to question myself and I am feeling bad. Is this normal? Is it okay to feel at something?3 -

Ya boy is now officially an intern! I'm starting next week, everything is sorted except one thing: we have to bring our own computers and basically get to use whatever software we want. I've got a fresh install of Mint and was wondering what IDEs or editors everybody here uses (and recommends), since I only really have a bit of experience with Atom and Netbeans, and I don't think I'll be able to get away with coding in Notepad++ or Gedit here.12 -

I graduated about a month ago and took a little break from coding. Now I'm looking for a side project to get the rust off in order to prepare for my job, which I start in August.
Got any ideas? I'm looking for something I can learn a lot from.3 -

Not entirely Dev related so sorry 'bout that, but I have some form of vacation to spend, where I'll be at home working on my thesis project and preparing my last exam (wooo almost done with the shit). Since most of my friends are away for the holidays and I'm a huge fucking nerd and also somewhat a shitty weeb, can anyone suggest some anime related with tech or coding? I know of ghost in the shell but there are so many I don't know which might suit me. I kinda prefer modern/digitalised graphic styles (common in 2012+ animes to say). Also, girl-friendly to be able to watch them with my gf is a plus but not a necessity. -
//not a rant
In Semptember I will be attending information technology at university, and I was wondering what kind of laptop should I buy:
optimal screen size? (13.3 or 15.6)
ram? (for VMs)
processor?
dedicated graphics? (or should I just stick to integrated)
I will be mainly coding, running VMs and school stuff(maybe some casual game like League or Minrcraft), so I was wondering if you guys could help me out with the decision18 -

Being a while I was here fe. Guess I have had nothing to be angry with, at or by. I have not really being coding lately (well I have but for like 2 hours or less a day) maybe because I overworked myself in the past months and finished up most of the backend requirements for the startup. Quite bored with the project lately. Now I just manage the team and make sure everyone is doing what they are supposed to be doing. I have simply being at home watching animé and floating through my days. Planning a trip in a few days to hopefully get me out of this unenthusiastic funk as I am starting a new job next month and would love to be of top energy and motivation by then.1 -

What do you guys and gals do or planing to do other than coding that makes you money?
Share your ideas.
I am learning to invest in stocks as a part time income stream.12 -
Every time I sit to code I just put up The Weeknd 's "Save Your Tears". At least that gives me hope to save my tears for the next code session.
save your tears for another day(of coding)…. -

just found out that coding while listening to an episode of ASOT makes me more productive even if i am sick. -
So It's a really interesting thing that happened with me
I just became a Facebook developer a few days back and today I see that there's news that Facebook might get banned in India, and I'm like thinking there goes all my learning of chatbots.
I should probably put that on my resume😂 like "Recommend me to your rival company and watch their downfall" -
Has this happened to you all too or just me?
So I was interested in a coding course and it was really long like 8 weeks, but still I started and now in the mid I just got bored of it and want to do something else.
Do comment and tell me if it has happened to you too...1
