Good news: Today my app reached 1 million daily users. 😃😃😃💰
Bad news: It started out as a side project and my shitty code is not scaling well at all. 🙃19 -
Microsoft support: "Your antivirus software is causing problems with the memory management."
Me: "I use Windows defender"
Microsoft support: "Oh..."

Client: I just dont like the pattern, it's too noisy...

Now that's a good use of the accelerometer :3
Actually, maybe this would be a useful feature in devRant as well? 🙃15 -
the advantage of dating a non-dev: she thinks I'm incredibly smart when I describe what I'm working on, when in reality I have no clue what I'm doing 🙃12

I’m so sorry! No, I do NOT have 9 years experience using this framework that has only been out for 5 years 🙃5

My last promotion was a 2% raise for a hell of a lot more responsibility
Guess who's updating their CV 🙃6 -
Boss: "I need you to program tool-1, tool-2 and tool-3"
Me: *creates tool-1*
Boss: "Why did you make tool-1? I needed tool-3 done by now"
Maybe you should have told me that 🙃5 -
I just sent an automated email titled "Gary is a Dinosaur!" to a lot of humourless clients because the ancient application I was testing assumed I was in the production environment. 🙃
Lesson to self: stop using bogus names in testing.
Still, it could've been a lot worse... 😂9 -
Me: "Back your phone up, or you'll regret it."
*6 months later
Them: "I've locked myself out of my phone, how do I get my pictures back?!"

Hello world! I'm new here. Discovered devRant randomly and I'm so happy I did 😊 Problem is, I can't seem to get any work done now that I'm reading rants all day long 🙃10

*reads JSON license*
"The Software shall be used for Good, not Evil."
Well that's actually a nice license.. if only nuclear research etc could be licensed like that.
Wait actually.. WanBLowS is using XML for its "diagnostic data", right? I always found it so weird that they don't use JSON for that.. but I guess that this is why 🙃20 -
I told my boss I'd been offered a job somewhere else with a better position and pay and he presented a reasonable counter-offer in under two hours which included an on-paper promotion and matching payrise.
I stayed. 🙃12 -
They just called me, saying they found my CV online 🤔 My CV is not online 😂 Still this is quite a good working environment 🙃6

When this week is over, I'd love to see the statistics on posts that contain keywords such as Microsoft. 🙃2

macOS: Sure thing chief, here's your stuff.
Windows 10: Here's a random thing I found on the Internet which is totally irrelavent. By the way, I see you're using Chrome, would you like to start Microsoft Edge instead? 🙃10 -

Don't attempt to reach the Balmer peak at the office without first practising at home.
It will take many attempts to know how much you need to drink to achieve it. It's a fine, fine line. 🙃3 -
The stickers are here bitches! 🙂🙃😆
Thanks devrant.
The stickers will have to wait until I get a new laptop though.
Also I'm extremely grateful for the time you take to mail us the goodies. And on your expenses even.
Thanks :)2 -
my own program is confusing me :)
it'll be fun waking up tomorrow trying to solve a hard problem…
oh shit i forgot to add comments🙃2 -
Went in to the therapist today. Their impression is I'm likely okay. Wait until I show them the cluster fuck that is Java Enterprise. 🙃11

it's kinda cool when u recognize devRant users by their avatar after using devRant a while.. it's like "Oh, him/her again..." 🙃12

PO: we want this new functionality, a new api call is needed in checkout process

Yay, I just found out that my internship report is due for February 9th! Yes, today is February 11th, soon 12th! 🙃3

My fiance is also a programmer. He doesn't say he loves me often, but than he does it looks/sounds like ''I [less than 3] you'' 🙃
Or he will prefers to ask me what am I cooking for dinner by using arduino & a display 🙄1 -

I was reading about AI, and now I want to buy a self driving car, and set it free... We shouldn't cage up AI in a car, what if it wanted to be an apache helicopter?
Ow wait that's even more scary 🙃7 -
When I was in college I used to think deadlock is just a theory concept. First c++ project on my job and I already have one now. 🙃

User: Your web app hasn't been working all day.
Me: Uh ok...this is the first I heard of it. Whats the problem? Are you getting an error message with any details? Can you send a screenshot so I can look into it?
User: Yeah it was an error message.

DevRant should have a sister app called DevChant where you post, collaborate, and get feedback on ideas, projects and concepts in a positive manner. 🙃6

Three differently sized monitors freakes me out, but apparently that doesn't motivate buying new monitors at work 🙃😔4

Just wanted to say my co-worker Jason is a bitch, thanks for handing me broken projects to fix. He's always on this so I hope he sees this 🙃8

Thanks to @sain2424, we found a really weird bug in devRantron.
One of the user that commented on or upvoted his rant has deleted that account. So when the notification component was trying to fetch the user's avatar to show the notification, it was failling and causing the app to crash.
@Cyanite the bugs you reported is fixed as well. Please update 🙃 🙃3 -
Oh god, I'm rewriting an old Python script we use at work and I had a look at the original tests for inspiration... There are 600 lines of "passes", #TODOs, assertions that can never fail, and tests of imported packages. Basically none of it is testing the actual script 🙃3
-
When I see someone with 14 upvotes, I'll just up vote so that they get the stickers (or I really find it funny/relatable 🙃)4

My little drawing tablet is finally here! 😁
I have started drawing, but the improvements to my skills are gonna take a loooooooooong time.
Plus, I have a slow and old lappy available now... which freezes in the middle of drawing but oh well! Better than nothing! 🙂 Little improvements matter.
Today was a short exhausting relatively happy day. 🙃12 -
Can't believe we still use fax in 2021. Instead of migrating it away for our customers, we virtualize it.
Instead of the old ISDN fax cards we will use virtual serial fax modems. 🙃8 -
Got an assignment for my OOP class, looked at it, laughed, "haha this is baby stuff I could code this by farting on the keyboard"
Wrote 400 lines of code without debugging

Sometimes I want to tell my friends how exciting and fun my job is but then I remember that they still don't understand what I do after numerous attempts to really dumb it down 🙃2

Alright, I know people joke about this but I just spent 4 hours debugging a 50 line chunk of code, and the first time it worked without errors it scared me🙃3

Just asked something on stackoverflow.

I tried out Perl this year, really loved it. No one wanted to do a project with me in Perl though, so I moved on. Now I am doing my projects in javascript. I can't help but think that there is something very wrong with me for liking just the languages everyone hates with a passion. 🙃3

My freelance horror story just happened a few weeks ago. Programming final project was due and a classmate payed me to make his project. It was something very simple so I was able to make mine and his different and functional. Grades went up yesterday; he got an A and I got a B+ 🙃 #wk861

No possible way that anyone could exploit this... 🙃20 -

Got 5 out of office auto responses. WTF.
Good thing I don't have work to do 🙃3 -
Just started a new job and am looking through the code base. I think I'll have plenty of material for this site at least. 🙃

A client of ours renewed their SSL certificates without prior notice.
The app we developed for them uses SSL pinning.
The app does not include the new certificates.
The entire userbase is hereby locked out of the app.
Fun times ahead 🙃1 -
Anxiety and depression came back today.
I have so many feelings I can't express to anyone.
I have so many thoughts and ideas I can't talk to anybody about.
Friends never invite me anywhere.
Sometimes I think about ending it all.
It's been like this for the past 5 years or so.
Isn't life just great sometimes? 🙃6 -
The Windows Phone Anniversary Update emulators don't fucking work as alwasy, so I have to debug my app on a VM with that version of Windows 10... fml 🙃2

Pretty sure I’ve finally got over my anxiety of going to gym. Trying to move more during the day and get my weekly exercise in the mornings but my general anxiety messes up a lot.
Now I’m feeling pretty fresh for a full day of build errors 🙃1 -
Oh the landing page you gave me 2 fucking hours to complete isn't converting so well??? I wonder why 🙃🙃🙃1

IDK why our teachers make us write code on paper when we have cool, fancy IDEs with auto correct 🙃 I think they are preparing us for job interview coding rounds from class 12 onwards😂😂
F for those who miss a semi-colon and the teachers gives a round zero😂5 -
tfw you're the only female dev in the room surrounded by men in brotanks, their protein powders, soylent, and gym bags 🙃7

I actually forced myself to write documentation for my current project. So I have spend hours writing guides and stitching together guides I've found all around the web 😐 On the other hand, now I'll be capable of re-setting up the server in about 30 to 45 minutes 🙃3

I spent 20 minutes looking at my Java if statement wondering why it's not working as intended:
if (word == "ABC")
I need some sleep/more coffee 🙃3 -
Our parents keep reminding us about the time change that happens every half a year. To remember that the clocks need to be adjusted. And we, the children, keep reminding them, that most devices are already connected to the internet and use the time servers for reference. Which surprises our parents every time. 🙃18
-
Why is sleep not a choice. I have code to write but my body and mind wont let me stay up.
Too many projects so little time
No one to help 🙃
Sleep is really a devs enemy 🙆🏾♂️12 -
Me: I'll comment that later
Also me: Why tf isn't there any comment
No seriously, comments and documentations are really necessary. Today I've been debugging for hours, why a certain variable has a certain value. Age of code: 15+ years. No comments. No docs. 🙃5 -
1 year into the project, spending nights fixing issues, but
today the client realises that things aren’t working out and we need to stop the project. 🙃
Does money, hard work and time grow on trees for you? NO CLIENTS ARE NOT GODS. They’re cuckoo.2 -

Flash back to when The old mouses had the trackballs in them, pulled the mouse apart and pulled the trackball out 🙃
Coming back to recent times, myself and a work mate printed off small troll faces and stuck them to the bottom of the laser mouses around the office huehue1 -
If you're going to keep compromising pics of yourself on your company PC, at least make an attempt to hide them. Seeing your "tiny Tim" is not part of my job description. Devs aren't paid enough for this shit. 🙃🔫

That moment you underestimated a local company site from using APIs. So you manually collect the data by scraping the HTML. But months later learn that they DO in fact use APIs.

So am teaching a friend of mine some Java basics. Unfortunately he keeps insisting on using Eclipse to be taught. Tried showing him the beauty of InteliJ but he says it's too confusing 🙃. So here I am typing some full codes that I could have magically inserted on InteliJ. I don't know how long I can take it.24

Love the craic of running a performance test that takes 30 minutes a time just to test one or two lines worth of changes 🙃4

My colleague had some problems today.
He had problems from both user input and predefined strings sent with ajax to backend. The "&"-sign was splitting values in GET-requests into unintended parameters. So... he was simply going to search and replace all of those signs with the word "and"...
encodeURI()? Why are you sending our forms with GET-requests?! 🙃 -
Me: IDK how this works. Lets ask support.
PLC Support: Use these ID's to locate what you need in our documentation.
Me: Why the fuck are all of them invald and I cant find shit?!
PLC Support: 🙃🤷 -
Sometimes I start to write codes and I even don't know how it's going to be end.
I just hope I find it along the way. 🙃2 -
I have procrastinated for four days straight. I have done nothing of what I should have done.
I've never been more productive though. Wrote a multi-platform SamacSys library-loader clone in Rust. I haven't written any documentation yet as that's about as boring as the stuff I have to actually do. 🙃
https://github.com/olback/...2 -
I jst need AI to detect typos in my js code and it's probably going to save me hours of debugging.. 🙃
Or maybe it can help me get a well nights sleep.. so I can detect it myself.. 🤷🏽♂️8 -
Happy 2023, may all your gym memberships be worth while, this time🙃
On a serious note though, what's your goto blogging platform these days?

This will take ages 🙃6 -
Working on implementing a new networking layer for business security requirements...but the requirements were talked about in backdoor "special" meetings; "lowly" implementation engineers aren't allowed in. God knows the engineers implementing the solution don't need to know requirements for what they are implementing 🙃
"Just encrypt everything!"
Oh sure let me just pull out my magic button 🤬2 -
Is getting 25++ this hard!!! Man i want those stickers🙃🙃🙃 I ++ everyone's rant hoping they will get 25 ++ and get their pack of stickers😂26

I've decided to do something very ambitious for my new Discord Bot. I'm going to try to embed Google Assistant into it. 🙃3

Now, I’m sure Microsoft wouldn’t intentionally sabotage popular iOS open source libraries just because they own GitHub now...
Then again, I can’t say I’ve ever experienced an error like this before ... 🙃1 -

Was tasked to write a utility library for work that automates and streamlines a lot of the API related bullshit we use. But it's grown so big that I now need to read my own source files to figure out what the hell it does when I actually need to use it... 🙃1

Spent half a day trying to figure out why a package wasn't working, was telling me the properties provided weren't known (typically meaning I forgot to include it at a module level).
Nope. The package owners just updated the property names and didn't update their documentation 🙃
how's your day going? -
Someone tell me why I picked Tkinter as my GUI when I could have used easygui and got the same marks. 🙃😅5

When as a php dev you work in an office on projects with .net devs that have to interact and you don't know c/c# and they don't know php so all code snippets shared between you are in python. 🙃1

Anyone got any favorite Atom themes/plugins?
Mine right now is HTML Live Preview, just to save myself from having to refresh every 10 seconds 🙃3 -
I strive for "sodd" and when that doesn't work out, then I panic because NO OTHER SITE will EVER live up to stack overflow.

Anyone have a spare 2TB external hard drive they want to lend to me? I’m trying to re-partition an 8TB drive but it’s being finicky so I have to take all the data off and wipe it. Luckily I only have 2TB on it. I’m going to ask my IT director if he has one today. Wish me luck 🙃2

Well... mmc.exe got blocked today after an update...
Microsoft management console that is... And a bunch of other stuff with it... Like device manager....
Eventually resorted to gpedit and even so I still can't print (🙃🙃).
Getting a fucking Mac with the idiotic touchbar and the ridiculously low ram tomorrow (for real).
Love having an Alienware with a 6700hq and a 950 pro that I can't take advantage of because of the OS fucking up all the time...
P.S. Yes I also have Linux on it but you can't really enjoy the.... 👽 side of things with it!2 -
I know when I first got into libGDX (game engine/framework/? written in Java) and tried to bodge together UI stuff like buttons myself. I was really happy when I got buttons pretty much working as intended.
Later that day I found out that Stage exists and all my (bad) work was useless. 🙃1 -
I just got my first programming internship. I wonder if the experienced programmers in the office have made any rants about me 🤔🙃😂1

Old but Gold. One of the nerdiest things, I’ve ever heard🙃Must share it with you...

Arrived half an hr too early at an onsen, so now I'm just reading up random stuff regarding design systems.
On another note, I have no idea if I'm able to communicate with the people here 🙃3 -
Why is it so hard to find a low-profile 105-key mechanical keyboard with MX Clear switches and no RGB fuss that's delivered within the EU? 🙃1

So first you said that the id's wouldn't change and now they do,
Wtf, guys c'mon
But if you look at the bright sight I can now play with regex again

Feeling a noob on preferring azure over aws for a long time after understanding difference between IaaS and PaaS 🙃1

For weeks the excitement had been going about the Eclipse, I guess because they don't know what it is like... I had the luck for one project, I don't think I want to see it again... 😧🙃😏

Only just got around to listing to the devRant podcast #1 this morning. DHH is a little potty mouth 🙃
Excellent content none the less! I kind of agree on DHH's stance on project managers.
On a side note, what other podcasts do you guys listen to? I quite like most of the content from jupiter broadcasting. LAS and Coder Radio specifically. -
I have to write a text that explains the kalman filter and I'm expected to include some light technical details, too. I've just barely used it in its simplest form and have almost no understanding about the stochastic aspect of it. Also don't have much time left and I barely understand the simplest literature about it.
This is gonna be great. 🙃4 -
I suppose the modern equivalent to waiting around code compiling is building the bloody Docker images. Vastly exacerbated by the requirement of an X86 image on ARM hardware.
FML 🙃1 -
On Friday I talked about a program that I copied and pasted into my own, and when I was testing it, it didn't work like the original.
If I kept it as the original, it wouldn't even move. If I tried to change it (taking the queries out of the loop. I know I know, I didn't make the original), it would give me a dump saying I was out of space.
So, my solution: delete some records as I go.
Can't wait to see the problems I'm about to have with this 🙃 -
Generally new to programming, building a static practice portfolio site, encounters first few hours of being stumped from coding.
I now understand the struggle of missing semi-colons 🙃 -
The day when you forget your iPhone passcode and get locked out and the only way to get it working again is to restore it to factory setting. I’m stupid today lmao🤯🙃🙄😂😂

RubyGems had to have SSL configuration errors for right when I'm working on a demo rails project for a firm 🙃🙃🙃 Got it working, but still
-
- Have the app running perfectly on heroku.
- App does some serious calculations which, depending on amount of data, takes a long time to process
- Heroku timesout after request takes longer than 30 secs...
- Need to move from heroku to aws... No devops experience...
- Damn... 🙃
Any suggestions? The procedure cannot be put into a worker queue so thats out of the equation.2 -
Does anyone, that works/has worked with laravel know how to give id a minimum length?
For example, instead of 1 I would want 000001, 10 would be 000010, and so on.
I know uuid does something similar, but it's not exactly what I want. Also, I had a bad experience with uuid, where I wanted to delete the field but it would still show up every time I migrated 🙃 but it wasn't it the migration file 🙃 so now I try to avoid using it 🙃4 -
What are some good coding buddies? I'm thinking of toys, not people. Suggestions? I need someone to talk my code through with who won't argue with me even if my code is wrong 🙃1

So, I might've lost my envelope with the stickers in it 🙃
I wanted to stick them on my raspberry pi 3
