Me: *puts small piece of tape over webcam*
NSA: Okay guys, shut it all down. No way we can record from the microphone, log keys, access the file system, USB devices, network data or watch the screen. He did the tape.22 -
We were learning to create a login system in mysql and php when one of my classmates showed me and the teacher his code.
He did a select all on the users table and looped through everything with a foreach.
We both tried to explain him why that wasn't the best method but he just refused to accept that.
He turned out a designer.
By the way, please never do it his way 😬18 -
Teacher: Homework for next time is to make 2 web pages with three javascript.
* whole class is quiet *
Me: What's "three JavaScript"
T: undefined
M: Do you mean three files?
T: No, I mean three JavaScript.
M: Okay, so let's go with five CSS and twelve HTML as well then...
Please, go somewhere else when you can't explain your OWN HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT. Holy fuck.16 -
Almost every really successfully project...is open source.
Some Examples:
- Linux
- PhP
- Node.JS
- The Chromium Engine
- All the Apache Stuff
- Unreal Engine(WAS closed source)
- nginx
and so many more
Open Source is the best way to build known, stable and useful software29 -
Line numbers should be on by default on all editors for fucks sake. Why the hell it is the other way around??11
-
On a serious note, most developers really don’t code complex algorithms all the time. The bar for interviews is way too high— to the point that most people get discouraged from pursuing a career in IT.17

Jingle bells,

But if you do,
Make sure you
Test it all the way!
Happy holidays, y'all!4 -
"could you please just use the standard messaging/social networking thingies? That way it'll be way easier to communicate!!"
Oh I don't mind using standard tools/services which everyone uses at all.
Just a few requirement: they don't save information that doesn't need to be saved, leave the users in control of their data (through end to end encryption for example) and aren't integrated in mass surveillance networks.
Aaaaaand all the standard options which everyone uses are gone 😩30 -
Way to many...
- Passwords stored in plain text on the year 2014
- Not supporting HTTPS because to expensive
- Hidden admin URLS
- Databases available all over the internet
- Client Side validation
- IoT5 -
FULLSTACK DEVELOPER
- A buzzword that startup companies use when they can't hire a lot of people. Multitasking all the way sucker!7 -
Not ++’ing a rant because double tapping / dragging the finger all the way to the side of the screen to the ++ button required too much effort.3

To all the people who just lurk here -
Hi!
Hope you experience something that you'd want to rant about! (in a good way)..
This applies to me too 😅5 -
I wonder how would devRant send the mail with my MAC address? The hard way by tracking down my system having having the MAC address and deliver it to me?? 😂😂
DevRant is being unaware that we all are devs here 😂13 -
This is for all the developers out there. Keep learning and keep going!
"No matter how many mistakes you make or how slow you progress, you are still way ahead of everyone who isn't trying."1 -
Wish me luck! Just posted a question on StackOverflow...
Ready to get downvoted all the way down to the earth’s crust.11 -
Welcome to the gang you sticky little sticker. Im glad they made all the way to germany. Thx @dfox8

Linux you are just the perfect OS in all terms but please do something for gamers. I cant keep on switching laptops for work and playing dota. Hell even the keyboard layout is like way different in both.21

Take note, this is the right way to deflect bots
Blocking IP ranges is one thing, but blocking all datacenter IP ranges altogether is something else entirely...3 -
After interviewing 3 candidates for software today, I have officially decided its time to seriously pursue creating a YouTube channel with a complete set of series to learn programming MY WAY... not the short cut way... this will go all the way to beginning and start the person up with a solid foundation to build on... I’m going to pour my knowledge into these series.
The education system has failed too many in the real world... to many people I have interviewed they think they know have a degree but are clueless.. this is unacceptable and a waste... AND way too often I see online “learn programming in 30 days or learn programming in a day”... fuck off it’s all lies .. all wrong.. wrong methods wrong philosophy and I’m done with it...
I’m set on doing it this time, I’ve put it off too long, and longer I put it off the more I see shitty interviews! Time to fix it68 -
Feature request for @dfox:
Swiping for rants:
Left = nay, right = yay
Or better:
Match making via rants for devSingles.
Just kidding! I love devRant the way it is. It's the best app. Probably the best of all. It's huge. You'll like it.7 -
It's Friday, and I'm working from home. What better way to start the day with gulp and coffee with icing on donuts... Happy Friday to all :)15
-
Thanks for sending them all the way over here! (I edited out my address) Amazing community and amazing devs. I'll enjoy them!8

4 step process.
1. Loud music on the way home
2. Vent to the wife. Because she listens and is awesome.
3. Kill stuff in games. ESO or any shooter.
4. Sleep.
After all that the next day is fresh and new and all is good and right in the world.4 -
When you have so many projects you need your buddy to send you the good stuff all the way from America.13

Someone wanted to test if the I-Scout game was capable of preventing SQL injections 😂😂
The I-Scout game is by the way an indoor and outdoor game for scouts all over the globe..2 -
Thanks @dfox and Tim for the awesome stickers which miraculously made it all the way to Sydney! Love seeing that you guys are so in touch with your audience 😊12
-
Heard my team leader is leaving, this leaves me as the only developer in the company, we went from 4 all the way down to 1... #thiscompanyisamess4

I think all the JS framework stickers should be the same size and shape... that way each year when you switch you can just cover up the old sticker with the new one :)1

Unencrypted, plain text passwords stored in SQL, from lowest role all the way up through Admin. In the same system, they had a "backdoor" password that would log in any user...

The game 'Factorio' should be required gaming experience for all programmers. Best way I've ever seen to learn load balancing and how to break down complex operations into smaller, manageable operations.9

Windows 10: if there is a way to condensate all the shit of the world into a single Operating System, Microsoft has it found that way for sure.10

Best mentoring advice I've gotten:
In your career you'll meet three kinds of people.
1) Nice people
2) Indifferent people
3) Not nice people
Treat them all in the same way. That's professionalism. -
I want to actually complete a personal project for once. All the way. Done. So I can have a product.6

Make your cookies banner have equal "Accept All" and "Reject All" buttons, and I'll probably Accept All.
Bury rejection under a fucking "Manage Cookies" button and I will go out of my way to disable/opt out of every fucking one of them.
Also why the fuck would rejecting all take "a few minutes" but accepting be instantaneous?
Fucking hell.18 -
!Rant: The collection is complete! Stress balls and stickers all the way here in Trinidad and Tobago. Thanks @dfox and co.2

Paraphrased conversation I saw in a space forum:
dude1: Our galaxy is moving toward a large cluster of galaxies and we don't know why.
dude2: Could it be gravity?
dude1: No gravity isn't strong enough for the distances involved.
dude3: Those galaxies are sexy as fuck. Our galaxy wants to hit that.
dude4: Is our galaxy old enough for a cluster fuck? -
I was working with this "friend" in a supposedly "partnership" way. He was handling the customer getting all the info for the product and doing all the communication.
fRiEnD: So I talked with the customer, the website will be delivered on 10th of June.

DevRant-Stats Site Update:
Uploaded everything to GitHub now.
Here is a link to the site:
https://devrant-stats.github.io
Not much features yet...
Oh and by the way:
The site is made for DevRant++ Members!
I will update it when I found a fast way to get a list of all devRant Users.
But for now it's only available (or interesting) for devRant++ Members.15 -
Progress has been made
Full control from a webserver!
Very precarious though - motors are held in place by blue tack, but occasionally they break free and hit all the circuitry out of the way
Any thoughts on a better way of controlling it? (In terms of UI/UX)4 -
Finishing off an all nighter the best way I know how (well most practical because the best way isn't entirely possible lol).11

Was venting to my sister about the BS I'm dealing with one of my projects at work. Specifically the convoluted way we're building a prototype and the way all the revision requests are just going in circles.
Sister: Your job sounds annoying.
Me: Only when other people get involved.
Truer words have never been spoken.5 -
🚨 PSA 🚨
It is not ok to be all over you significant other in a pretty intimate way when in public. Especially not the fucking bus stop. At 10 in the morning.
Fucking hell.24 -
Am I the only one that loses some, if not all, motivation when they can't figure out a way of overcoming a problem that doesn't involve a nauseating hack?3
-
Tools don't matter. Use what is comfortable and don't listen to all the brand, OS, editor and tabs/spaces crap. They all do the job and you will find the right ones once you really understand what you are doing. "Tools can be just a way to procrastinate". If you become tool agnostic you can do the job no matter the environment.1

Yuck, there's no keyboards shortcut for that. Now I have to move my hand all the way to my mouse and back again. Double yuck1

Looking at the version history of Git (which is obviously tracked by Git), it goes all the way back to the initial commit...for some reason this blows my mind.2

So the devRant stickers are finally here all the way from USA. Thanks devRant for these. Absofuckinglutely loved them. 😍

I've traveled all the way from Chile to Ecuador to ask requirements for an already won project, just to find out it was already taken by a local company.

Just created a batch file to delete a directory so that I don't have to right click and move my mouse all the way to delete and click it.10

University makes us sign our documents electronically. What this means is that we're required to put pictures of our signature onto all sorts of declarations. Since none of the documents we "sign" this way are important it could be okay, but I don't understand why it's beneficial to encourage us to keep a photo of our signature on our computers, paving the way to identity theft.18

OK Google.... guess we'll play it the hard way....
I'll just upload all videos i want transcribed onto Youtube in smaller (10 minute?) chunks where machine transcribe is enabled...2 -

devRant avatars: Where's the hoodie?
Maybe it could be a separate category from Shirt, and you could add all kinds of outer wear from vests to parkas. But either way I'd love to have the option7 -

Shout-out to the sites that make cookie popups the least annoying they can by actually providing options in the quickest way.
Those that hide them while having "allow all" take up 50% of the modal? Suck my fucking nuts.6 -

Recently made a sub 750 euro in home server with raid 1, to back up all pc's laptops and smartphones in the house to. Never been better!
Using a simple little daily backup tool on all pc's, and another app to sync 2 way to my phone, i was able to have all my data safe on that home server.
It even allows me to edit content on my phone which will sync overnight, because of the way usb access is shit on android since.. 5.0?
I am loving it! Worth every penny and week of setup effort.3 -
remote work is so much better for me.. i think something is wrong with me because little things my co-workers do like clearing their throats, them slamming their keyboards and sometimes the way they laugh or even the way they speak... pisses me off so bad. OMG!!! even putting on headphones does not help. I wish i could ignore all that.

Tried to write a short article about Javascript IIFE modules, ended up explaining about function block scoping all the way to closures before I eventually get to the IIFE module explanation itself...
I'm really bad at this 😓1 -
Since learning how to program, I have started to see the world in a different way. The algorithmic and Mathematical way of approaching computing problems I have adapted to approach all of my problems. Everything is just a problem that can be solved by taking a logical approach!

Instead of using MVC framework (like Angular), my predecessor preferred typing all the data the hard way.... The number of lines were like 2000 (in html...)3

Oh! How I wish the ++ button was placed at the top/bottom center part of a post. Being right-handed, the level of laziness I have to stretch my thumb all the way to the left when scrolling on the phone with one hand is appalling.11

Big military company is using their custom font for everything. Is there a way to find documents that use a specific font?
All hail to the corporate identity!4 -
I'm reading 'JavaScript: The Good Parts'. Nearly a quarter of the way through and all I've read about are bad parts. I thought this would make me like JavaScript more, not less!

Why do we never talk about angular? It was way ahead all the time. Like you got all these nice things with Vue 3 and React 42, but bro angular got it all for years..
It feels so nice learning it.7 -
I hate Eclipse.
I have the Student membership for a year but I can't use IntelliJ for my project because I HAVE to use Eclipse.
I'm around 80% - 90% done with my project, so I guess I won't have to deal with it much longer.3 -

Fuuuuuuuuuuck..... why is CSS so fucking ASS when it comes to working the way it is supposed to. Why would someone create such a broken tool.
end rant.
Thats all, have a good day.3 -
I am currently working as a consultant and I like it. It also makes upset/happy/schadenfroh (not entirely sure how I feel about it) when we tell the client what work needs to be done in which order and why just so they can throw it all overboard and we do it the way they want it and it bites them in the ass a few month down the line.
They hire us for the external professional experience that we bring, so listen to us. We did this before, we know what works, and we know way your way does not work.7 -

I dream about discovering weird side effects on certain built-in functions way too often.
I usually implement those myself but without side effects. All in the dream. -
My high school computer labs all had Macs and SSO for the students. I found out that they had remote login enabled on all of them.
Using CSSHX, I could log in to every computer in a room simultaneously, turn the volume all the way up, and make them sing.
I never tried any privilege escalation, so my capabilities were basically limited to that.
Still fun as hell to freak out everyone in a room all at once.5 -

I spend all morning on trying to solve an Algo problem for upcoming interview practice (Euler #3) that comes down to implementing IsPrime.
I remember reading once how Sieve of Eratosthenes
Isa the right way to go do when I first started I wanted to use that.
Then I couldn't think of the right code though so I went with Brute Force (for all numbers upto X see X is divisible by it)
It actually worked but I wanted to just try the "right way".
It's way slower and actually ended up with the wrong answer...
But at this point I don't give a **** anymore.
I guess lesson learned... Use Brute Force first... Then optimise for a problem more elegant solution.10 -
Don’t write documentation for other people, write it for yourself! It may all seem obvious today, but six weeks from now you’re not going to remember what you were thinking or why you wrote the code the way you did.1

Honestly, nothing.
I’ve had some bad experiences in my career so far, but I wouldn’t go back and change any of it.
I believe I am the engineer I am now because of all the experiences I have had.
Embrace your bad experiences and awful projects, because you gain a greater appreciation for the right way to build things when you’ve witnessed the wrong way first hand.3 -

Goddammit Google, SWIPE to automate an email response? I AM NOT A COG IN YOUR MACHINATIONS.

Friendly reminder that if you disable remote content in your email client, the feature that almost every email client allows, there will be NO WAY for all those bloody spammer corporations to know that you even opened the email. I keep getting interest for my freelance services and then people totally ghost me. Could we have some kind of way to see who created the post in the comments? Like an OP mark or a different color of the name or something?
When reading long quality rants I tend not to notice the username, and then when I'd like to engage in the discussion I have to scroll all the way up to check it.2 -
Zoom free tier calls end after 40 minutes.
Idea: pwyw conference software where the call ends after 40 minutes if the host isn't paying €5 more monthly than everyone else in the call. There is no way to discover whether this is a limited call until the 40 minute mark, and there's no way to discover who outbid the host at all except by getting everyone to show their bank statement.1 -
JavaScript is shit! The only JavaScript frameworks I've liked so far is Angular 2 onwards all the way upto 5, and that's only because it's in TypeScript. Fucking JavaScript! How did it even get here!? So anything with JS, please save us all the gut wrenching, testicle crushing, ass fucking without lube pain.... fuck JavaScript!1

Is there a way to hide ++ and notifs from the UI itself
I am thinking about the current UI, seems like it is designed to “catch-up”.
A more refreshing design would be where i get to hide all the ++ and notifs from the UI itself.
That way App engagement is solely based on my realistic interest rather than an need for external validation8 -

So one thing that kinda bugs me about php embedding is the white space formatting it creates when you break your project into templates or includes.
It has no affect on the front end at all but if you look at the source code, usually the top tag in a php template is spaced way off, unless you move your entire php code block all the way to the left. Then somehow it looks right on the frontend but now your php source code looks messy xD Could just be my code editor (ST3) but idk. Anybody else?2 -
fuck php and fuck it's whitespace header not sent bullshit, apparently there a bazillion ways the header function may just refuse to work, all for a function javascript does way better13

In highschool I made simple static webpages for small businesses. No div tags, this was all <tr><td> all the way down.
One client was upset that the website was too 'liney' and wanted more 'pop' with a content management system and push updates for the same price.4 -
Signed up for Prime this morning... And just got 2 emails from Amazon recruiters.
Thought all the tech companies had hiring freezes... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What's up with those fucking internships? Is it a new way to exploit people and have someone do all the hard work that no one else wants to do but for free?
Oh and by the way, if your company is worth more than 10 million dollars and you still have unpaid internships FUCK YOU.5 -

Long time no rant..
Although work is way too much and stressful, things are actually not too bad at all..back to the office (voluntary), got back into to a routine, got a raise way below what it should be, lots of "off the books" overtime that I'll never be able to compensate, but.. still not to bad at all.. feeling better than I have for the last couple of years.. 👌 -
XSS mitigation is a pain in the ass.
After all this time, with all the brilliant developers around the world, why haven't we found a sane way to mitigate this shit by default?
Shit!8 -
I started catching feelings for my toilet. It's always been there for me to help me take all the bullshit out of me. Now i feel bad for shitting at it so much. In fact after unclogging the toilet it now hasnt got enough water inside so now the shit smells more. Gotta find a way to fix this toilet just how it found a way to fix me5

I have implemented RESTful API using expressJS, and another React app which will use the API's to fetch data.
I'm getting a problem of Allow-Origin Header.
what's the proper way of calling a API ?
do I use a CORS middleware and allow all origin ('*') and use Api-key as way of check authorization to prevent mis-use. ?
any other tricks ?2 -
Has anybody here ever thought of a really good idea, actually developed it all the way to the end, released it AND made a financial or worthwhile success of it? Interested in seeing/hearing your success stories and checking out the work.4

I guess ill wait until you ignore all my warnings and find out for yourself. But i am the one you keep asking questions about technology to so why do you have all the answers prepared? Why ask me?
So i just keep saying, try it. Try it your way and let me know how it goes. -

So I have a question to anyone familiar with the General Transit Feed Specification...
Why is the data provided in text files? Is there not a way to format the data to allow for random access to it?
Like I'm currently writing a transit app for a school project, and as far as I can tell, the only way to get all specific stops for a route, is to first look up all trips in a route, then look up all the stopids that are associated with a trip in stoptimes.txt (while also filtering out duplicates since the goal is to get stop ids, not specifically stop times) and then look up those stop ids in the stops.txt file.
The stoptimes file alone is over 500000 lines long, unless there is a way better way to be parsing the data that I'm not aware of? Currently I'm just loading the entire stoptimes file into a data structure in memory because the extra bit of ram used seems negligible compared to the load times I'm saving...
Would it be faster if I just parsed all the data once and threw it into a database? (And then updated the database once a month when the new data comes in?)3 -
Has modern day development become all rabbit holes all the time?
Seems that way to me. Tired of it.2 -

Was exhausted after coding for a full day, was going to commit all the work at the end of the day. Then my brain snapped: wanted to hit `git add .`, hit `git checkout .` instead.
Lesson learned (the hard way): "commit fast, and commit often"1 -
Oh for fucks sake! Why so we have threading when we synchronize EVERYTHING with a singleton... and when I actually show you that even unthreaded spaghetti code runs 40% faster under real life conditions than your shit you just brush it of because I'm still at university and don't know what I'm talking about... And not because changing it would require money or time we don't have... no, just because I “lack the necessary experience with such things.“

Completely fed up today, trying to investigate a memory leak using google chromes profiling tools, first of all all the "documentation" is well out of date so you have to pretty much guess your way through it.
Anyway i start to investigate and it looks like the JS Heap increases in size only after a garbage collection, surely this is the wrong way round or am i just being stupid2 -
Degree is still on the way.
But once i have finished it'll help me do something like
std::cin>>a;
syd::cin>>b;
int sum = a + b ;
std::cout<<"sum of both numbers is:"<<sum;
My degree tells me that it is the most useful way of solving real world problems. By using c++ to cout statemens on terminal can solve all problems of a corporate company.1 -
Have you ever tried to read your Facebook chat history all the way back when you were younger? What a horrible person I were! Those embarrassing teenage messages! There's a right way, and a wrong way...
Correct:
if (version <= OLD_VERSION) {
... do_something_old ...
}
else { ... something new ... }
The wrong way:
if (version = NEW_VERSION) {
... do something new ...
} else { ... do something old ... }
What my standup report is today:
I'm modifying thousands of lines of SQL code because the script was hard-coded to only work on SQL Server 2008 R2, and we're using SQL 2017 in our test environment. All of those lines now fail because we don't match your "new version" number.4 -
Advice to new devs: be open minded and adapt to the way things are done at your new gig. Be humble, things that aren't the way you're used to aren't necessarily bad (even bracing style and editors). Have a guru and absorb all you possibly can. Don't be afraid of showing that you don't know yet.

Another Team: How do we do this thing? What aws role do we need?
Me: You do it like this, and I don't know the role by this guy does and all you have to do is ask him for the name of the role to assume.
AT: Ok, great.
AT: We're going to do it like this (wrong way, completely against best practices and completely against what the company architects dictate)
Me: No... thats the wrong way. Don't do it that way. That is bad, because (Reasons A, B, C). Do it the way I told you it should be done.
AT: Ok! I see thank you!
3 hrs later
AT schedules a meeting to go over options to do the thing ... including the WRONG WAY and they still haven't talked to That Guy to get the role name they need.1 -

Just a question about a generic social app. Using mongodb , 3 entities ,like comment and post . how do I display posts in feeds with comment count and like count . since its mongodb I can't do joins . the other way is to maintain a data structure on the server side . or yet another way would be making 2 extra queries to db for retrieving like and comments count . Any other way this is possible or is it possible to form a query in mongo db to retrieve all 3 at the same time???1

Nothing more to say except all other courses have way way better grades than my course.

All other courses are just Soo way better that I just can't believe that fault is only on the student side here.

Had the same shit with our courses failing unlike the others anothet time too.

I don't like BizTalk.
It's very powerful and all but the resource needed to develop, support and maintain far outweigh the benefits.
Everything seems half finished, for example the way to deploy, update and the admin console GUI are all a massive core to work with.
A small part of me dies every time I end up with a BizTalk project.1 -

What is the correct way of pulling the latest changes via docker?
Please write step by step commands.
This is how i do it:
1. docker build -t dashboard:latest -t dashboard:v2 dashboard/.
2. docker rm -f dashboard-latest
3. docker run --name dashboard-latest -d -p 8081:80 dashboard
So...
1. Build latest changes
2. Remove the old container
3. Pull those latest changes
---
Is there a better way? Less commands? Is this the right way to do it?
Sometimes the changes dont get updated so i waste hours of time trying to figure out if i fucked up the commands, or order of commands, or if its some caching problem etc.
Teach me the right way once and for all.9 -
