While our co-worker was on vacation. We installed Win 95 on a usb stick and hid the stick inside his desktop case.
It was not an easy task to get it working on a modern hardware but it was worth it to see his face when that glorious Win 95 booted up instead of Gentoo. -

But, we don't really help the cause when we run around casually claiming to be "full stack" and not turning down work that clearly isn't in our area of competence.
We act more like Victorian amateur scientists.
Every seen a "full stack" doctor when you go to hospital? "Brain to feet---I can do it all."
OK, we have general practitioners, but they are really the BAs of the medical world. When it comes to getting into the weed, everyone specializes.
Full stack lawyer? "Hey, you did an excellent job of dealing with my house purchase. I've just been accused of murder. Can you represent me?"
While we continue to say that we can provide a high quality "full stack" experience I think we are signaling that this stuff *is* easy.19 -

How to land a programming job
1. ABC (Always Be Coding) - The more you code, the better you'll get.
2. Master at least one multi-paradigm language - Some good candidates are C#, C++, Java, PHP, Python, and Ruby.
3. Re-invent the wheel - You should implement the most common data structures in your language choice.
4. Solve word problems - Pick those that test your ability to implement recursive, pattern-matching, greedy, dynamic programming, and graph problems
5. Make coding easy - At least, make it look easy.
6. Be passionate - If you don't care, then nobody else will.

One thing I think a lot of students/schools miss when learning/teaching, is that your code has to be *maintainable*. Your code is (hopefully) going to be used for a long time, so program it to make it not only easy to upgrade and maintain, but easy for SOMEONE ELSE to upgrade and maintain, too.
The best code to work with is the stuff that's been coded with maintainability in mind.14 -

When I discovered Clean Code, design patterns, TDD and BDD. It just clicked. Ever since everything build so easy and obviously. I no longer have most of the code problems folks rant here about.
That's when it came to me: it's not enough to know how to write code. To climb off those amateur shoes I must adopt those methodologies, so that the code would be decoupled from me, from my style, and I've got to let tests drive my code rather than vice versa to have a flexible and reliable codebase that is cheap and easy to maintain/extend.40 -

Had to hand in as assigment for my algorithms & data structure course and really put alot of work into it, commented code, easy to understand and all.

Wrote a feature that took a week plus to complete that was reviewed, approved, merged and already in production.
Guy who approved comes in and says to make changes now with 1 day to end of sprint saying to refactor stuff. It won't make a difference other than some logging changes but I found the effort to be large plus the QA would need to retest everything.
When I brought up my concern, he tells me it is very easy and to get it done.
Now am feeling so stuck rushing on this work cos he called it 'easy' and I don't want to look like a fool...
Why review and approve code only to come back last minute asking for changes.. Not the first time and always last minute followed by calling it easy. I am almost forming a phobia to merge approved code..4 -

I love materializecss.com .. I love the concept and I don't know why, but I like it ways better than bootstrap. Materialize looks kinda fresh to me - not the classic Material Design. Aaaaaand it's very easy to work with it.5

@localhost Here's the setup I use when volunteering at my church. Room for another developer but when it's just me I use synergy on both machines. Not always by the all the windows. The wheels make it easy to go anywhere in the building.

god i despise these "javascript is bad" articles. everyone seems to be jumping onto that train ever since the WAT talk.
javascript is a *weakly* typed language with implicit type conversions, that's why `{} + []` gives you `0`.
it is not easy to be the most widely used language, and to maintain compatibility across varying platforms.

can we all take a moment to appreciate the developers of flutter. they're smart, and they took the time to make flutter the *right* way.
they used an easy to learn language that's ideal for mobile development, which means hot reload/restart is possible (because dart supports aot and jit compilation)
the way it's designed is beautiful. everything is a widget, and it's easy to customize them via named parameters.
the community is great. it's not large, but it's supportive, with two active subreddits. yesterday i asked a question on r/flutterdev, and a member of the flutter team at google answered the question with a comprehensive answer.
flutter is very consistent across platforms. if it works on android or ios, you can bet it'll work on the other just as well, with the exception of platform-specific code.
it is VERY performant. unless you write a major bottleneck, 60fps is easy to achieve.
animations are EASY. define a tween and animation controller and then write a callback function. not to mention it's straightforward, and complex/combined animations are easy, too.
you can get almost direct access to the canvas, should you need it, with custompainter.
oh my god, this is revolutionary in the programming world. development is quicker than it is with native android alone, and for people who have no access to a mac, like me, i can develop for ios and compile via code magic. if you haven't checked it out and you develop for mobile, check it out.
oh yeah, did i mention it's not just mobile. hummingbird - flutter compiled to web - is already in experimental public betas, and will likely be released by the end of the year. there's also experimental desktop support, which is amazing, and much better than electron. not to mention flutter is the future, as it will be the primary way to make apps on fuchsia os.13 -

There is a constructed language called Tokipona. It was made to be the easiest language, and it only contains like 137 words or so.
This language is a perfect demonstration of “expressivity”. Tokipona is not very expressive. Before you know it, your sentence is obscenely long, and you didn't even convey the full meaning of what you wanted to say.
It's also the case with “easy” programming languages and frameworks. Code quantities rise exponentially, and the more code you have, the more bugs there are. There is no magic. And then you have to debug it. Not so easy, huh?

The Philips Hue API is some tight-ass shit! I'm not particularly interested in the light bulbs-- maybe I'll give them a try --but the API for the motion sensor is brilliant. Simple, easy JSON responses to simple GET requests against a device-specific URL. I was able to throw together a working sensorcheck script in only a couple minutes.2 -

It took me like 3 hours to install stupid mariadb on my fucking arch. From the service not beeing able to start over not finding the correct base dir to permission problems in the data dir.

Why python can't into proper dependency management?
I Node.js we use npm. Modules are downloaded per project and packaging is easy.
In Java we use maven/gradle. Never been so easy to build and download libraries and package your project.
But in Python? No, it's not easy. You have to use virtualenv first so pip/anaconda won't download globally, then you must write setyp.py in a million different ways. Packaging and distribution to clients? Good luck with that.21 -

I have been a developer in one company or another for over 27+ years. Today I had to dismiss / fire / let go of a recently hired developer (a Senior by career length) on one of the teams I now manage. Basically imposter syndrome compounded with an inability to communicate a need for support (even when we reached out daily to assist).
When I had to let this person go I felt all the times when it happened to my colleagues , and to me. Like a thousand knives stabbing . It wasn’t easy.
It’s of course not easy to be dismissed . But it’s also not easy to be the one to dismiss.5 -

I love Android development, but I HATE make individual strings for each word in my apps. It's so tedious! There's gotta be a better way than telling myself, "Oh crap you better be a good boy and use Google's 'best practices' and not hardcode all your strings. Wrongly estimate the time required to do things…
Sometimes is good, I think it will take 3 days and I'm done in 1, but other times it's not!
e.g. today I estimated an easy implementation would took 5 minutes and it took 5 hours instead… fml13 -

Its good and practical but those who aim to fill gaps in the programming industry by trying to produce "programmers on demand" via a several month long bootcamp are complete idiots. Nobody can learn to develop a well structured application that's easy to maintain in a couple of months, either that is frontend or back end. We are trying to be engineers , not just solve problems.

Can we please normalise using JSON bodies for GET requests? Makes life way more easy to just have one uniform way to communicate with API's and having different parameter formats between GET and POST request. I mean, In my opinion it is not logical to do one request with query params and others with data in the request body6

Started learning Android development in Kotlin.
My first impressions:
- Kotlin is good, but class syntax is not very appealing
- Overall it seems to be quite easy, at least the basic stuff
- Android Studio is a fucking memory hog, RIP my RAM

Well I was in school for web development I chose to take the elective course intro to web as an easy online class. And almost failed an assignment for using css3 for rounded corners and shadowing all because it did not pass validation because it was not standard yet. Currently we have to make a new REST API at work. I want to have a clear and functional API (with HAL JSON, that is given). But my colleagues don’t like this, because they don’t like the design (the look and feel) of the HAL JSON responses. They just want an easy API with a nice design, so they want to ignore half of the HAL JSON specification. But a REST API don’t has to be easy and don’t need a fancy design, REST APIs are not for humans but for computers! How can I explain this to them?3

Pushed out a big update that included restructuring every directory. No one had access to the admin section. Yeah needless to say my boss was not happy since no one could do any work. Turned out during the process I made every admin page need the highest level of authorization which only the owner has. Easy fix but stressful day for sure

I have read people talk about how “Laravel makes PHP fun”. I don't get it. I really hate frameworks. Yeah they may simplify tasks. But the way I see it, you now have a damn framework that you're never going to bother to understand. You most likely won't read the underlying code, you'll rely on others to release security updates.

Making software is science. I'm not talking about overengineering, just doing things right (with a minimum of automated testing, abstraction, architecture easy to modify, stuff like that). If you don't wan't to invest money in science, but only in business, get external providers for parts of your product, if not all of it. Stop making custom stuff that already exists, unless you can make something better (because it most probably ain't be cheaper, regardless the quality level).2

I tried Leonardo and it's actually pretty damn good but is not free at all, tried Mischief and has some really bad performance issues (plus is not maintained anymore), tried Milton but is still immature, anything else (OneNote, Gimp, Krita) is just not what I need.
I want it quick, lightweight and easy to use just like Leonardo, but free.

Yesterday I tried Rancher on a DigitalOcean droplet.
Rancher itself was easy to startup and use. But I couldn't manage to find the Container Volumes on my NFS Server. Even the NFS Server was up and running.

I wanted to get the latest NASA APOD photo with Python. Easy, right? Nope! Firstly, their RSS feed is partly HTML, so feedparser doesn't understand it. Secondly, feedparser doesn't even get the titles of entries correctly.
Which is why I'm trying to parse it in a horrible way using Python regexp. NASA can put humans on Luna but not even get their RSS feeds to parse properly.2 -
It really annoys me that many tech recruiters do not have a basic knowledge of the roles they are trying to recruit for and what skill set to look for when they cold message/call potential candidates on LinkedIn.
I make it very clear on my profile that I am a Full Stack Engineer. Still, every other day I get messages about Data Engineering, Frontend Dev or SRE roles. Sometimes a recruiter would insist that I schedule a call with them before they tell me the details, and then I would realize after the call what an absolute waste of time it was.
I have a lot of respect for recruiters. It's not an easy job. But I'm starting to strongly believe that tech recruiters should be made to go through a specialized training to make life easy for themselves and to stop wasting time of people who are not even remotely suitable for their requirements. -

I was recently playing max payne 2 on my pc when this colleague of mine comes up and boasts "You playing max payne now?? I have completed this game so many times, even in the hard mode. Which mode are you playing in" (I was playing easy -.- )
But then it struck me. how cool it would have been, if we had a chance to take a decision at some point of our life , to continue the next phase in easy medium or hard mode. The harder the mode, the bigger the prize, but its not that you are suffering by the consequences of taking easy mode.
Like take college for example. Instead of companies deciding the quality of a candidate based on popularity of their college, they would take based on the mode of education they took for various subjects.
- The education mode system would be something like this: at the end of 6 month an exam will happen as usual
- the easy mode of exam will have just the lighter , more basic syllabus and lenient checking .
- the medium mode will have slightly more research based questions from the a more standard version of the previous syllabus and unbiased checking .
- the hard mode will have deep knowledge requirement professional questions and strict checking.
- students willing to dedicate heavy time to their choice of subject will then have better opportunities at big companies, making a fair ground for all.
- student more focused on non academic/ specific topics could take easy mode for most of the subjects, and focus on the career of their choice. They will still have a backup to apply for jobs requiring knowledge of certain subjects , but for lower wages( since they took the easy mode for those subjects they would be learning the required knowledge in the company, working as proxys/junior devs)

I needed to install an extra Ethernet card on my machine at work. The process of getting it from the IT department was fairly easy, but the damn things didn't have the small screws you need, in order for the card to not hang on the PCI-E port...

You know what is awesome. React with Redux. It is such a clean and scalable pattern for building UI. Conceptually not that easy but on once you have it. So much better than any other pattern I have seen.
But what fucks me off is working with other librarys with it not hard just fucking annoying.2 -
If you think laravel is easy, try to modify your json response in a way that's not too nested.
Not all language have built-in null-checking capabilities. We have a hard time in the front-end to do null checking if there are any nested(level 3 or more) JSON Response.2 -
when you're the unlucky fuck and/or too stupid to get green builds so you get flamed when the flaky automated tests (from before your time, not written by you) rear their head and shit all over you
you then get flamed for not going out of your way for fixing them, as the team verbally agreed to do so, but very rarely if at all has anybody done so (it's not so easy trying to fix something when you don't have consistent steps to reproduce)1 -
I'm currently starting to develop a simple web app to access a database, just simple read, write, update stuff. Doesn't need to be fancy or anything, just work.
Now I asked a PHP dev I know for help and he told me I should use Symfony and Easy Admin Bundle. I'm not sure rn if it'd be worth it to get to know how to work with frameworks or not. What do you guys think?

Week2 day 1 of beeing in the database team to learn more sql. Turns out the task they want me to complete is rather easy. So this is day 2 of doing exactly nothing.
Also im not allowed to do the task all on my own since the other apprentice has to learn it too.
These short blocks never have any challenging tasks to do *sigh* -
I didn't look into WordPress but I found out it is simple and very easy to use CMS..... I want to dig deeper eventually use it but wondering if I should or not..... cause I don't know its faults or pitfalls, Any advice please

I only found out today that there is a light-weight Redis app for Windows that works out of the box.
I thought using Docker Desktop + WSL was the way to go about that.
uhhhh.. makes me wonder what else am I missing out on that's incredibly easy but Im not aware of, yet.4 -

There's so much money in technology right now and so much easy success ... and so much poor quality code that is good enough ... that people can not only "function" in rolls they aren't qualified for ... but can excel and even be promoted through the ranks without ever becoming actually functional.

Scala is a better TypeScript. Feels so easy and natural to switch. Too bad it mainly targets Java devs. Scala.js is not nearly as popular as it should be.3

so. design change comes in. not alot of detail. by quick scan it looks easy. then reading in detail it becomes a pain of the ass hurt as people did not think things clearly by asking to take away things that shouldnt be taken away !!!!

Good company refuced my contracting service. Fuck that. And reasons do not sound good to tell - like team did not want me anymore, maybe too dificult project, I am not independent enough, too many fixes after code reviews. This sucks that I do not know how to fix those parts, I have tried. And about too dificult project - how can I do better on dificult projects, I am not sure. There are projects of similar dificulty in most companies. And if projects would be easy, then everyone does that and reward would be small.18

For something opposite - I'm very happy about openlitespeed docs. I'm not very well versed in those things but beyond a small issue with my ubuntu having a hiccup with libzip4 required by it it was surprisingly easy to set everything up thanks to their explanations.

Guys, I'm refactoring a server code from es5 to es6 and I would like to know how to get es6 errors like when I'm working with React. I have installed babel, and I can compile es6 code but I get errors that target the es5 (compiled) code so it's not easy to find the bug sources5

Anyone using lirc (Linux infrared remote control) and got a Windows or Android program to control it through the network?
I did not find any that actually worked so I started my own yesterday.
The communication with lirc is surprisingly easy.
My next step is parsing the remote configuration files from lirc.
After that I need to get the GUI look better.1 -

I received a job posting recently which has php in it, I decided to avoid it for multiple reasons, but it got me thinking: why do companies seriously believe that php is "easy to learn/use/pick up"? It has an horrible syntax, a lot of inconsistencies and lacks functionalities... Is there something I am not seeing?3

One of the best product feature updates (though it's not "very" recent) that I really found interesting and useful from Developer perspective is integration of JIRA cloud with GITHub and how it uses issue key to associate the commit.
I makes things a bit easy while working in DevOps model :)
