Interview
HR: So .. tell us .. where do you see our AI acting in 5 years?
ME: Doing your job minus the stupid questions.
*silence*
Boss breaks out in laughter.
"Oh boy you're hired"12 -
Get ready for the first ever devRant live stream event! @trogus and I will be making an exciting announcement/launch live on our YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/devrantapp) this Wednesday (October 4th) at 9pm EDT. After the announcement we will also take some questions from devRant users who are watching. The questions can be about the announcement or anything devRant-related in general. We hope to get some fun questions so feel free to ask anything you want.
We look forward to having some fun with our first live stream! If you can't make it, don't worry, the replay will be available on YouTube and we'll likely do some more streams in the future. Please let me know if you have any questions and we hope many of you can join us!
Edit: the stream will be available here once it begins tomorrow: https://youtube.com/watch/... I will also post another announcement rant when we go live!53 -
I knew I was about to get laid off so I stopped caring and started answering questions on stack overflow all day every day instead of working.
10k rep later I got a new job via stack overflow careers that pays twice as much.
Moral of the story? Be efficient... even when you are not.5 -
Conversation with my mom the other day:
Mom - How do you use the screenshot button on the keyboard? (She has a Windows work laptop)
Me - Just press it.
Mom - I did that! It didn't do anything.
Me - Lol it's not supposed to do anything. It takes a picture of whatever is on your screen and you have to paste it somewhere like Paint to save the image.
Mom - Ohhh that's too much work. I use Snippit (or whatever the built in Windows screenshot app is called) and send it to myself in an email.
-------------------------
She takes a screenshot, pastes it in an email, and sends it to herself to save it. Hm.
Then she told me tonight that she needed to screenshot these questions in a quiz she was taking. I kid you not - she took a screenshot of 2 questions at a time, pasted them in an email that she sent to herself, and then printed the email. She did this for 40 questions so she printed out 20 emails with screenshots of quiz questions. She also printed out the 200 page manual she needs to study and deleted the pdf. Mom, seriously? What if you need to find something in that 200 page manual? It's so much easier to ctrl + F to find a specific word or phrase. Ohh it doesn't matter she says, there's an index.21 -
Client: so how could we test this 😬
Me: you know what, send me an email at linuxxx@companyname.com and I can look if I can properly reply! Keep in mind though that this is for one time only, no further questions through that email address!
Client: Yes of course! *sends email*
Me: *tests* - *works fine* - *messages client back through the ticket system*
Client: *proceeds to send two follow up questions to my fucking work email address*
Me: *selects emails* - *marks emails as spam and deletes them*
Fucking seriously?! Cunt.18 -
I just finished my thesis defense, one of the committee members obliterated me with incredibly difficult questions but it was so much fun to respond to this 40min smackdown after presenting all my work in 50 minutes. The battle has been won ladies and gentlemen, I am incredibly happy.13
-
So yet another follow up rant on the Linux job hunting! (yes hello this is @linuxxx).
Got send a list with questions (for candidate screening) and was literally mentally preparing to answer all the questions (I expected shit like Linux commands, kernel stuff etc etc).
Then I saw the questions. Mother of god.
1. Have you ever worked with a Linux distro and if yes, which one(s)?
😶. Uhm I expected some more difficult stuff.
2. Have you ever worked with a hosting interface like CPanel etc?
😶😶. Alright I should adjust my view on the difficulty level of these questions.
And so it went on and on. I think I make a pretty good chance 😆.
I'll hear more at Monday and if all is good then I will get an interview through Skype with their American office!10 -
Client hasn’t responded to my questions for over 2 weeks, so I close her ticket.
”Why the hell did you close the ticket!? The problem still exists!”
Sorry, I’m not a mind reader..3 -
Wow, I dont use mainstreem languages, so my questions dont have that much upvotes.
Now I have a question-ban from stackoverflow :(
This isnt really fair...20 -
Yesterday i somehow drunk-coded my entire c++ homework, it runs great and its a guaranteed A but i dont remember how does it work so if they start asking questions theyll think i just had it made by someone7
-
Happened with a friend of mine
*Before interview*
My advice: Try to ask about the company, the recruiter, the job. Look curious.
*Interview about to finish*
I: So do you have any questions?
F: Uhh, yeah, sure. Where do you work?2 -
Why are interviewers so resistant to letting people use Google while doing coding questions? It’s not like I can remember all the semantics of every language anyway, and so much of coding is learning to use Google correctly.8
-
For the new episode of the devRant Podcast we're working on, we'd like to take questions for a new Q + A segment we're going to try. So if you have any questions you'd like me (dfox) or trogus to answer, ask it in a comment here. They can be about devRant, us, life, anything really! We'll
pick our favorites and answer them in the episode.16 -
I'm upset. I got banned by StackOverflow because of the questions I've asked recently.
I've worked very hard on my account, getting myself up to 293 points over quite a few months.
And then they just toss me overboard because of the reception of a few questions that I've asked recently.
I deleted the question, re-edited it, and tried so hard to get myself out of the ban. And then I come back and here I am, completely banned. It's so fucking shitty.
What's even the point? I feel that most of the time the community spends more time downvoting instead of upvoting?
How can I even compete? I'm trying to get help, not feel invalidated and smashed by a stupid point system.
I'm just going to go sit in a corner and cry now because clearly, my questions are worth more than the points I've garnered.20 -
Every time I post a question to SO I feel so anxious.
Did I provide enough code samples and information?
Did I provide TOO MUCH information?
Is my English alright?
Did I really try everything else or will someone point out something totally obvious after that I feel that I need to delete my post because it's just dumb?
Feeling anxious right now... Worst of all: it's an important work related question, so I have to think about a new task because this issue was my only one and a road blocker.
AAAARRGGHHH!12 -
I saw quite a bit ranting about SO now. So let's get things straight:
If you get _no_ answer, at least one of these is the case most of the time
a) a repost
b) too unspecified
c) needs rewriting to proper english
d) you dumped your whole project
I'm reviewing questions regularly on SO and never saw a good question ignored. There may be no answer but at least people trying to help in the comments. Also think about WHO answers your questions. All devs who help in their free time. Did you ever answered one question or even brothered to look now and then if there is someone you could help? There is no RIGHT to get help it's a PRIVILEGE.
So stop bullshitting and try to get shit done.8 -
Just finished an OOP course exam.
Writing code on paper? Check.
Useless, deprecated technology questions? Check.
Memorising fucking docummentation by heart? Check.
Term translations from english that make literally 0 fucking sense? Check.
I'm so fucking done with this shit. Uni isn't teaching people anything, it's fucking degrading them, so that when you get a job, you have to start learning from -9001 instead of fucking 0.6 -
Stack Overflow. Everyone uses it but everyone seems to hate the community. I very often read about someone getting down voted and they all say the same thing - "I have no idea why".
I have spent a lot of time moderating SO posts, which gave me a lot of reputation and medals. I find it fun to help people and it feels good to give back to the community.
I have asked a bunch of questions and I've never gotten a single down vote, which leads me to believe everyone of you that is constantly getting down voted are doing something wrong. Because the posts I see getting down voted are fucking stupid questions that either lack information or contain too much information.
Example 1:
Server java error
Why is my server not working? I am using Tomcat, port 8080 and I'm getting IOException.
Example 2:
Webpack configuration not working
My webpack is not a working, why?
[entire webpack config]
End examples.
What the fuck are you expecting asking questions like these?? No one gets paid for answering your questions, so the least you can do is write a CLEAR AND UNDERSTANDABLE question. I'm not gonna tell you how to do it because there's A LOT of information on how to do it.
People devote hours and hours to helping others on SO, and of course they get fed up with the stupid and lazy questions. That community is not about being nice, it's not about making people feel welcomed, it's about QUALITY OF CONTENT. No one is crying when they find a superb question + answer, right? That's the result of a community not accepting low quality content.
So please, the next time you get a down vote on SO - do not come here whining about it but instead take a look at what you have posted there and ask yourself if it could have held a higher quality.
Thanks!8 -
I actually never had to deal with that so far and wondered too.
https://stackoverflow.com/questions...6 -
To sum up yesterday:
A pigeon flew into the classroom in school so I think we did pigeon debugging.
The questions asked were: "Why would you fly into a building" and mostly "how the fuck did you know which of the ten windows are open?!"4 -
I guess scriptkiddies get offended too soon. Thanks for the hate.
P.S. : I'm not stopping to downvote improper questions on SO20 -
So I deside instate of only going to stackoverflow to ask questions. Am ganna try to answer one !
It has been 2 days and I basically stopped all of work trying to help this guy . Finally I did and no thank you what so ever !!3 -
Why do people talk so much in the real world. I'm okay with yes/no questions. Talking face to face is exhausting for me. Leave me alone. I'm okay with chat too.
Can't tell these to anybody for real tho.
Sighs.7 -
Me, explaining to my wife the difference between WiFi and Cellular as I explain why I need put the Pi from that other thread between our modem and router (and take our WiFi down) all so I can finally answer her repeated questions of "Where is all our data going???"8
-
I have this one question..
So when I want to ask something or posting/ranting something, there are different categories.. I can differentiate between others vs a collab.. but what about questions, rants, about devrant, random, what are the differences between these categories apart from the specific category helping the algo to populate your newsfeed..
Anyone??14 -
Today was my first day at work after Easter break...
It's 22:00 and my head is buried in my pillow filled by random thoughts of violence, rm -rf / schemes and questions about where my life is going!
So... Anyone wanna open a coffee shop?
Or something involving waffles...
Mmmmmmmm waffles8 -
So people here are complaining about StackOverflow being rude and unfriendly to noobs.
Post a link to your question and people here will judge whether it's a good question/answer.
We will see whether it's the network or your questions being just bad.8 -
- There are no stupid questions. Please feel free to ask.
- You don't have to memorize, but try to understand.
- Document so you never have to remember.
- Teach so you will master and never forget.
- Even if we have different responsibilities do not ping pong issues because overall the client only sees one company name so we work as one.
- Do not disturb while on vacation leave unless it's life or death.
- Relax, sleep and have a happy weekend. -
Why are people on StackOverflow so fucking harsh? I'm a newbie programmer so I'm sorry if I didn't word my question to your specific liking, but you don't have to down vote it because you don't like it or you feel it's beneath you. Maybe give some pointers (without jumping down my throat) so that I'll get better instead of getting me closer to being banned from asking questions. I see other questions that I think suck, but no down votes!7
-
Sometimes, I find myself around a bunch of annoying newbs who ask dumb questions...
because I'm a part time CS instructor at a high school...
but when I see light bulbs switch on and the smell of enthusiasm in the air, makes teaching so worth it.5 -
So I would really like to see a devrant like app where devs can share design ideas for problems that are greater than a function call, or topical questions found on stack overflow.
As I have gotten older, I have realized that actual implementation is typically easy, the design approach is typically harder to get right from the first go, so open critique can be very useful.6 -
One of questions in short test that we give to interviewed frontend devs is:
"How would you center a <div> horizontally with CSS?"
So many still answer with <center> ...13 -
Are programming related questions welcomed here? My stupid fucking questions always get downvoted at Stackoverflow and I feel discouraged and frustrated and just plain so stupid which don't really help me learn. . .15

Interviewed a guy for a senior technical job. I worked hard on making my own questions that hopefully make the interviewee think instead of useless gotchas.
He told me at the end that they were fun questions and this interview was loads better than the rest who just ask questions off of Google.
Having had my share of shitty interviews, this makes me feel so good 😊11 -
I am interviewing people for a job position with python knowledge.
My first question is how to reverse string and second one what’s the difference between set and list.
So far no one knows.
Fairly speaking I am asking only basic questions about what is decorator, generator, lambda. Also some basic data structure questions.
Is it to hard ?
I lost my faith in humanity.15 -
Was interviewed some 15 years ago while quite fresh out of university. Huge panel of people hammering away with questions so after an afternoon in the room all my fried brain could come up with when they asked if I had any other interest was "...trees..." :)
-
Meeting host: "So now that I've finished rambling on does anyone have any questions?"
Me: "Why are we not marketing the time dilation machine you appear to have developed and deploy during the course of this meeting?"
Co-workers laugh.
So glad that it turned out our microphone was muted... -
A couple days ago, I went through the most embarrassing interview ever. It was a startup into both hardware and software merged over image processing. I really wanted it. Really really did. It was telephonic, and involved a little bit coding over docs. In the one hour we talked over the phone, he asked me about 30 questions. I hadn't even heard of the words he said! Ive never delved into compilers, lower level things, and memory management. I could answer about 5 questions- including the tell me about yourself question.
So thats about 25 ways I came up with of saying "I don't know" in a span of 60 minutes.3 -
Being under 1000 rep on stackoverflow is elo hell. All you get are downvotes for non-duplicate, sensible and well explained questions. I think most of SO community is pretty fucking toxic towards people trying to learn programming.11
-
It was a girl who made the interview...
Girl:bla bla bla work stuff
Me: just staring and answering dumb questions..
Girl : do you find me attractive..?
Me: wtf like aaa what I'm gay sorry.
Girl :so you became gay because of me...?
Me: these questions aren't related to work... Will you continue or what?
Girl : looked me bad....
and went to the next room and a guy came. Fast forward...
im working with her for 4 years now...
(hope you don't hate me for this)15 -
Sometimes I wonder:
Who actually cares?
About what I do
About what I make
About me.
Why put in effort if there is no different result? Why am I always sad? What ruins my day? Is there really hope? Why? So many life questions I want answered. Do I care too much? I definitely think way too much. Why am I so lazy. The questions I have.
Cheers,
To a better day.13 -
And I thought they had removed all of the joke questions from SO! I haven't seen this one, maybe it was lost to time.8
-
That awkward moment when your family and friends sit behind you and ask questions;
What is this you're typing on the screen?
Why words have different colors?
Why so many tabs?
How do you type so fast?
....... and more
Share yours.10 -
Becoming a High Reputation Stackoverflow Master
Can work like this:
1. Look for questions like "How do I add a value to a list"
2. Post "Use list.Add(x)" faster than any of the 20 expected answers that will be written for this question
3. Become accepted solution
4. Get 100 up votes as more people unaware of API documentation come across your answer
Sometimes answers and questions are so trivial you wonder how this would be upvoted by anyone ever.2 -
Daily scrum
Today, the Scrumpy Master was not here, so I leaded the daily scrum meeting,
rephrasing the 3 standards questions a little bit: the results where amazing.
Here my questions in case somebody want to use them:
- What the fuck did you do on Friday?
- What the fuck do you think you are doing today?
- What is your fucking problem?
We managed to keep the meeting very short and after the meeting everybody was sooooo concentrated I couldn't believe it.
Beeep Beeeeeep 7:00 o'clock. Shit. I was dreaming. Must wake up and go to work.
Scrum master will be there too.8 -
Add a course that teaches people how to write and formulate questions.
So that people don't write questions like, "my code no work, plz halp".3 -
Q:Why should a professor teach things that aren't in the source book?
A: so he can get an exam that not even himself can answer properly!
Q: But why?
A: no one knows the answer. It's one of the philosophic questions that has no answer. But maybe to hurt his students!5 -
I just thougt what could we do so the people start reading the terms and conditions. Finaly I have the solution we have to ask questions about the terms they just read. 😂3
-
I only see rants here about people who post to StackOverflow. I use it a lot but all questions i wanted to know were usually answered so I just had to search for them. I never posted something there and don't even have an account. Anyone else doing the same thing?4
-
Last year I went to a job interview. Companies senior developer was taking my interview. After few questions, he advise me that I should learn HTML 5.3. I thought he must be fucking with me so I said HTML 5.3 has not released yet. actually HTML 5.1 has not released yet. He looked so serious about HTML 5.3. I don't know why?3
-
The feeling when random dudes downvote a question, because a guy who finally earned some points on SO dared to format the code with `<code>`<br> He pasted code, log, even explained a little bit and ~500 point guy even flags it like _unclear_ although there's clearly visible import error.
I mean... as an answerer or moderator, I'd be damn ashamed for such behavior! I have absolutely no problem kick a person with words + explanation in my answer or comment, so that (s)he remembers to ask better questions and feels bad about that, because nooby questions are already answered so many times there.
But to downvote because of formatting even if you have a permission to edit and a flag for low quality or because you can't read ~40 lines of log makes you just a retard and hurt the whole remaining community of guys like me who find time to sit there and answer questions to help another people.7 -
A customer who frequently calls me for help just called and let me know that I was on speaker for a room full of people who had questions. Nothing like being put on the spot with zero warning....jeez. And I'm sick today, so I bet my sniffles made me sound awesome. But we went through everyone's questions and all is now good.1
-
Honestly, I think a lot of stackoverflow 'community' is a big stack of assholes. So many times, my questions have been downvoted for being 'too broad', even though some good Samaritan has already answered and solved my problem on that very question.4
-
A guy walks into tech interview. Solid 6 years of programming and teaching others. Proceeds to stumble on basic questions and fails to demonstrate even junior level of ability yet keeps alluding on how valued he is in his current position. How do people become so detached from reality?2
-
Took the risk and asked a question at SO. Yay! No downvotes so far
https://stackoverflow.com/questions...6 -
Well SO blocked me from asking any more questions. Which is BS because I went back and edited my questions as I was told to.
Ohh well, I figured I would just make a new account. So I logged out. Put in a new email. Filled out all the forms confirmed my email and then I see "You cannot ask questions" WTH? Appentally it cached my browser, so when I signed back up it linked my two accounts together..
Well, looks like I'm making a new email..6 -
Lately I'm finding issues on git more helpful than StackOverflow.
I know those are different beasts, but for the harder/specific questions I'm finding more resources on the repos than on SO.2 -
So I was doing homework questions for an online course, and they basically amounted to following instructions and typing in the result. I wondered, "what the hell kind of person fails something like this?"
Then I remembered users. -
Modern SO questions: "I want to rewrite Microsoft Excel. Any help much appreciated! :D"
Yet asking what has been attempted as a comment is banned...1 -
Just created my first discord server after seeing so many people from here mention it. The questions I have are, why? What makes it better than say slack or something else? Is it prone to spam or bots? How is it for gaming?8

Everyone is remote working and executives keep telling non-technical to push their communications into shared channels in Microsoft Teams.
It forces analysts and managers to ask questions plainly. They are getting developer input quickly so aren’t wasting time on in-person meetings. The higher ups see how little many produce. Developers are busy churning out software as usual and responding to technical questions.
Our CEO said something in a channel that suggested he is considering downsizing the management and adding more developers. 😱 The response was that analysts and managers packed the developer schedules with online meetings and are trying to initiate more documentation work.3 -
/*
"Not wk135, but blah blah blah"
Please don't misuse wk135 (Sorry)
It's about coding tests
Thank you. */

A company took their technical test on this really weird website. There was a Windows Narrator guy's voice giving instructions while a timer was running. I had to flash my ID to the webcam and then fit my head on an outline on the screen. It was for a web dev position. I had to speak into the microphone to answer the Narrator's questions and then send the video to them. The questions were weird and hypothetical, mostly. I just thought that their process was dumb and unnecessary.
=>
I don't like aptitude and algebraic tests. One company, I remember, had their test on Google Forms. For some multiple choice questions, they put check boxes instead of radio buttons. So, I could just blaze through it selecting all options. Some of the questions had their first option as "All of the above" 🤔. Fortunately, I didn't pass the test.
=>
The company I'm interning with, starting from next month, had a good interview process. They asked me questions on JavaScript, CSS, and a few on algorithms and data structures. I was also given a task where I had to make a css animation of trees. I'm glad they didn't have an algebra entry test.
😊 -
Boss: "we're going to take over a project from another company. that's what we know so far - any other questions?"
Me: "do we get the history (svn/git) or just current source? unit tests?"
Other company: "no history for you. no unit tests - app was only tested manually"
Me: *sigh* :'(3 -
When people keep asking the same kind of questions over and over and you realize it's your fault for always helping them out so they don't learn how to debug on their own.
It's hard to do nothing but in a learning environment it's often the best.2 -
seniority.
i know hes the most knowledgable.. but i have more experience.. so i dont need to ask any questions cause all of the answer is in my experience..6 -
Craziest prep for an interview?
Way back when I interviewed devs, I prepped a bank of Simpsons and Star Trek trivia questions if the candidate answered one of the softball questions ("What are your hobbies?", etc ) that related to either subject. On rare occasion a candidate claimed to be a big trekkie so I asked..
<Deep Space Nine was in it's 5th season>
Me: "What was the name of Captain Sisko's ship?"
C: "Sisko? Was he from the original series?"
Me: "No, Deep Space Nine"
<awkward silence>
C: "Is that the new series?"
Me: "Not really, but lets do an original series question. What does the middle initial 'T' stand for in James T Kirk?"
<awkward silence>
C: "I have no idea. I don't think it stands for anything."
He didn't make the cut.
My boss at the time said I should not document any of those questions/answers just in case we are sued for discrimination.36 -
Posted a question on SO a few minutes ago. It seems like they are downvoting questions before reading them. If after reading the question it appears legit and written according to all the rules - they return the upvote.
Wtf dude...14 -
Worst:
Going through bankruptcy
Best:
Getting out of it, joining a team that is so on the edge of everything, that asking questions on SO is useless, and they can only be answered by us debugging the platform itself, as suggested by its maintainers.
... To boldly go where no man has gone before1 -
Boss : we need you for a voice conference at 7AM tomorrow in case of technical questions
Me : Sure thing
I work from home so will most probably still be in just underwear1 -
Had a PHP test for a job application yesterday. The test contains nearly 20 questions, most are 2 points. I had to write the answer into a word file and cannot use search engine. I thought I did okay because most of the questions were asking like 'what is php', 'what is isset', etc. which I could answer all of them and pretty confident that I answered correctly but the recruiter contacted back today that I failed...:(
It's my first time applying for a programing job after been working in the field for almost 3 years. Feel so bad.. Feel so unqualified 😥😥7 -
I hate trying to shop on sites powered by services like Shopify. Especially sites that have so many fucking plugins that pop up every 3 to 5 seconds asking me a fuck ton of questions.
-
As a junior developer I'm thinking way too serious about putting this information on my resumé...
" I'LL ANSWER STUPID QUESTIONS SO YOU GUYS CAN WORK ON PEACE "1 -
So I'm gonna send the e-mail with these 4 questions, is that OK or am I missing anything?
"Go ahead"
* Clicks send *
"Could you also ask..."
NO! DON'T SAY THAT'S IT'S OK TO SEND IF YOU STILL WANT TO ADD STUFF TO IT!1 -
So apparently hiring these days is all about 1/3 learning random questions and answers 1/3 remembering algorithms from code execution portals 1/3 luck. Well fuck my life, it’s worse then 5 years ago when I last switched jobs.
So how was it 5 years ago you ask ?
I send my cv with exposed java interviewed for javascript and hired for python. At least then it was 50/50 luck.5 -
Just had a CS test.
I absolutely annihilated my hand and those questions. It went so fucking well. I was allowed to take pictures of my answers to check if they were correct at home. I’ll include them here.14 -
I know this really isn't the place for this, but I REALLY need help..
I need to add app scaling inside my game.
To do this, I need to listen for a MouseDragEvent (or similar) on a JavaFX object like a Label or Image.
Here is my SO post:

Thanks in advance!22 -

So often my stackoverflow posts are answered in a matter of minutes. I wonder if I am just extremely fortunate or if my questions are extremely simple.2 -
!rant
So my boss told me they will be interviewing applicants and he wants me to come with.
Reading posts here on devRant has enlightened me on what NOT to ask on interviews.
But what questions should i ask then?? Any tips for me? First time sitting on the other end of the table.5 -
So... the company I work started a selective process to hire some interns. Since we had a lot of applications and little time, they created a simple test with coding, theory and interpretation questions (9 questions in total) to filter the best candidates then focus on the better ones.
One of the questions (the only one the candidate would actually code) was asking to write a simple FizzBuzz function. The idea was to check the quality of the code and clever/creative ways to solve the problem.
Turns out ONE of the candidates were able to write the function. So now, this question is not being used to evaluate the quality of the code; instead, it's being used to check if the candidate knows how to code at all.
Such disappointment...
-----
PS.:
The idea to put this question on the test was heavily based on the arguments of this video: https://youtube.com/watch/...
:)2 -
Everyone shitting on SO answers being mean (which sometimes they are), meanwhile:

Garbage like this is how you become a misanthrope.11 -
Sololearn has probably the dumbest community I've ever seen...
I know that there are lot of beginners who just started learning programming, but if you can't even use the app, I don't think they will be able to learn programming.
Also all these little kiddies who want to get some badass hackers but don't even know how to do a fucking course (There are lots of questions like "Where can I learn HTML" while they are right in the fucking app, like holy sheeet).
Sometimes I browse the Q&A just because there so funny and dumb questions. Really amusing!8 -
When there were some coding questions to solve that I thought I can do but can't do more than 50% of them! It hurts to heart and I felt so gloomy.
-
Why so many recent questions about which code editor to use?
P.S. Nice to see vscode getting some recognition.8 -
So I found these stack overflow questions and thought they were particularly humorous.

The answers were pretty good. But I wanted to actually "break out of an if statement" like the ops asked for. So I created these monstrosities:6 -
So this is what a test looks like here in my school...
I really like my teacher but his test are... uhh... fucking awful.
I mean the code isn't even indented ffs! Like wtf?!? How should one be able to read this bullshit?
The questions are shitty too.
Also please add line numbers so it is easier to describe how things work in the code.
AND USE FUCKING A4 PAPERS FFS!!!
Thanks,
an experienced student7 -
I asked my former boss for some clarification via mail. Given a table, I was supposed to edit some user info in the company system. Had some questions on a few entries only my boss could answer.
Boss would organize a meeting, also inviting a more experienced co-worker I worked with. When the meeting starts, I get to know that my boss will join in a few minutes..... few minutes later, boss cancels the meeting. So it's me and the co-worker, who cannot answer my questions.
A simple mail could've solved it... -
Recruiter called me about an HTML5 that they had posted and I applied. Recruiter did not know what HTML5 was and I had to explain it to them so that the questions she was asking me made sense to her.3

I hate this era where it's illegal to ask questions
Europeans called snap elections and everybody is going far-right but I don't see mention of Israel so I got curious if this is a coup. but I can't even ask the damned question. questions are illegal28 -
Lots of people seem to have awful PM's, so I just thought I'd express appreciation for my PM (who I found out last week goes to my church, which was cool). He regularly asks questions about how our system works so that he can be constructive in directions instead of acting like he knows what's up. Woo Tim! Ok feel free to go back to negativity time4

What's your new year resolution(s) for 2018?
What do you like about devRant?
Which area do you think devRant can be improved?
// I got asked those questions last night at one of the project dinner.
// So now I am asking you guys here.
// I have replaced the project name to devRant for us.
// My answers in comment.3 -
My friend wants me to post a question on SO coz he cannot as he is currently banned from asking too many questions(dats what he says). Moreover, the question he wants me to ask was already asked by him a month ago. He wants me to ask again as he didn't find a.solution.8

I just went to SO to browse questions and learn something or help someone...
And then...
THE FREAKING PRINTSCREEN OF IDE
INSTEAD OF COPYING THE CODE
And you know what's worse?
There was also a PHOTO of the output from the console.2 -
Hate asking these questions here buuuuuut...
Can anyone recommend a good flowchat/diagram visualiser for linux?
Preferably GTK based so it doesn't look out of place but anything will do, using google docs for this shit is like trying to disarm a bomb with a spoon...14 -
had an interview at a place that went good at the technical part but I didn't do great at their 'abstract' questions. the guys interviewing were complete stone faced as well, no personality, pretty sure I wouldn't have liked working there anyways. a few years later and they are still looking for people. the recruiter rings up and I said I wouldn't want to re-interview unless the process had changed. he guaranteed me it had. so I went back in and it was exactly the same. exactly the same technical questions, followed by more abstract questions. different guys but same no-personalities. never going back

Well, this goes back a few years to when I first started to program in Minecraft. I had an idea of developing Gun Game in Minecraft before any of these big servers had created them, so I had a few questions and asked it on Bukkit forums. So he responded to my questions and seemed interested in the idea, so one day we got to talking on Skype and were working on the project. After that project, we worked on hundreds of smaller projects and even started our own hosting company (Which was sold off now, due to us being in school). So I went from not having any programming friends to having one, just cause of a Minecraft plugin idea.1

I have upvoted good questions, helpful comments and useful answers on SO for a long time now, although I don’t have enough reputation (15 needed to count upvotes).
Once I reach this 15 points get ready for a big rain of upvotes 😁2 -
I hate people aren't as smart (?) as me so their suggestions don't make sense and I can't ask any questions
and then sometimes if I try to ask them anyway they think I'm just criticizing them and get defensive
I just wanna know how things work.
STOP FLAILING5 -
These are probably stupid questions but I have to ask.
So does it usually take long for people to get back with you after you apply (if they were to be interested)
And are contracting positions worth looking into as well for someone trying to build professional experience?8 -
I don't know why they made so many algorithms, data structures and big O questions during interview, when all they wanted me to do was to maintain some legacy, tight coupled, spaghetti code with no architecture, documentation, tests nor any kind of engineering behind :/1
-
this morning i felt so inspired and very productive so i finished the whole project in a few hours! they posted the pdf file explaining what the program should do and i just told myself "im going to start doing it before class so i can ask if i have questions later." but in the end i finished it all on my own so i am so proud of myself!
p.s. it's supposed to be submitted in December so i guess i have more free time or maybe i'll do the next project which will be submitted next year and be more advanced 😃2 -

I swear to god this industry needs some serious purging. I was trying to google the parameter to Node that crashes on unhandled promise rejections so that I can get a stack trace and debug it properly, and literally all relevant SO questions were asking how to _prevent node from crashing on unhandled promise rejections_. In what realm is that preferred behavior?7

This remote agency that we use to help us build our mobile app is taking the piss out of us. They always have stupid questions, more stupid questions and on top of that at least they don’t work fast. So a task that should take a day it takes them a week and when they deliver it’s not exactly what we’re asking. Despite the fact that they’ve already asked me tons of questions they went ahead and implemented something I haven’t asked for because they thought it’s better. Well guess what read your fucking requirement documents that I spent 2 days writing. It’s all there bullet point by bullet point including the way it should work with examples and justification plus a flow charts to make it super fucking clear. It must be their business model to fuck around, stay on the project for as long as possible and ask for more money. They can’t be that stupid.5

Today I answered 3 not trivial SO questions spending about 30 minutes at each of them, caring about formatting, explanation, sources, documentation, links and tests, and also paying attention at catching questions immediately after they were posted and without other answers by faster users.
End of the day: 0 points1 -
First world problems - approaching 50k rep on Stackoverflow (well, currently on 46k.) Would quite like to get to 50k. But my days of enjoying procrastinating on there are long gone.
Sadly, so are most of the good questions it seems.
Anyone else still answer random questions on there for fun? Or has everyone else pretty much given up with it too?9 -
Something stopped working.. on a fucking running train!
I have so many questions but I will refrain 😩4 -
[at the end of a coding interview]
Me: Do you have any questions for me or the company that I can help to answer?
Candidate: Normally I have many questions to the future teammates, but you're not from the team I'm interviewing for so no I have no questions.

3 months project:
- deadline changed to 2 months
- specs delayed by 1 month
Now a 1 month project...
Started one month earlier so I could achieve something...
Now, 23 days to deadline: here, take this 20 page PDF with 200 questions ( witch can be drastically reduced) to make the new form section (2nd section out of 6).
Me: OK, but it could be nice to have everything at once so I could design it accordingly , I can see questions here that are repetitive , it would spare me a lot of work if I could see the big picture.
she: Just put those (200 f#cking questions) on and show me so I can see if its good and deliver the rest based on it.
OK, fuck it I'm just let hibernate create all the fucking tables and I figured out where to get all the questions she wants anyway... there are 7 categories with repeated questions...(about 150)...
Just wonder what's so hard to do her job... she had 3 months to do it and I only have 1... -
I'm pretty sure some users only browse StackOverflow looking for questions to flag as "Not Constructive" or "Opinion Based". Some of the best programming discussions I've read have been in the answers and comments to closed questions, so get over it, happiness haters! Sometimes I want to hear people's opinions.3
-
Ummmm....guys? Anybody interested in programming mice? Is that even a thing? Is $5000 a reasonable level of compensation for such a task? I have so many questions6
-
Waiting to find out results of interview. Dying. I need a change so bad.
Can't stop thinking about questions I wish I would've answered better but I have skin crawling anxiety during interviews and I haven't had one in a loooong time 😭😫 fucking fuck shit fuck universe help me out.7 -
When you really need to study, but your brain is so desperate for distractions that you go answer questions on StackOverflow2
-
Only questions I consider stupid are the ones that are permutations of an original question asked constantly from month to month. They should know the answer by now!
Asker: "Theres a bug. I cant log into this account"
Dev: "It's a different dev database, so use the password for that one" -
Some peoples questions on Stack Overflow are so fucking cryptic, it's as though the question is written in the language in question.1

Hello World! Told my son to press "ok" for all questions. So now, I have to look for backups of projects. Not sure id git push

Stuxnet's job quest part 3:
(P1: https://devrant.com/rants/1573298/)
(P2: https://devrant.com/rants/1583743/)
(TLDR for the two parts: I'm interviewing for a job at the tech support center at my uni. Had a phone interview last week, questions like they asked below.)
So they called the me Wednesday and asked to set up a face to face interview. I go in on Wednesday for the interview.
What kind of questions should I expect? Similar to the same ones asked during a phone interview, such as:
• If you could be anyone, who and why?
• What do you know about us?
• Steps you'd take to troubleshoot issues?
• Explain a virus to a technologically illiterate person.
Or are the face to face questions more in depth and I should prepare a bit more?2 -
SO is like my SO
Yells at me for asking stupid questions. Hates it when I don't Google first. Tells me I'm too vague. Shuts me up before I have the chance to ask.
At the end of the day I've accomplished nothing with my code.2 -
I'm actually getting so fucked off with having to travel to work to the point that I an on the brink of rage quitting and only taking something where it is agreed to and understood about me working from home, no questions asked!14
-
I had a training about secure software engineering recently. Today was the corresponding exam.
One of the questions was a list of 4 hackers and you should pick the one who was in jail.
That question was so unreal... I was speechless.4 -
Might start asking monthly or weekly questions just for the hell of it so heres number 1...
If you have a prototyping/code naming convention, what is it and why?4 -
DevRant-API-Docs Site Update:
Finished Auth System.
The Authentication System should be ready now. You can login/register and create questions/answers!
So the Q&A Section is fully functional now!
Please note that there may be bugs!
If you find one, please report it here:

Have fun!7 -
This weekend, I have been grinding a lot on leetcode. Even though I am grinding part of me believe that the interview process is broken for relying too much on those questions. I know it's a way to filter but I still think it's broken. But I guess I have no choice since that's how the interviews work .
I guess from now to next 1-2 months I will be busy with leetcode. I also have to read some system design questions.
Fuck, so many things to prepare4 -
That moment your senior gets an email saying the company was bought over. Should i worry?... Why did i not get the mail?.. So many questions. Not sure if i should even worry.7
-
Client asking the same damn questions they asked last week. So frustrating .. wait... I'm looking at the email from last week. Never mind.
-
My C adventure is going horribly. So I stopped. I took a second to breathe then looked at my current resources decided to use the 2 books i have as references to learn from as well, then found a reasonably long YouTube guide so I can have someone verbally explain something, and I have a friend and a few places I can now ask questions if I need it. So yeah I'm pretty confident now.rant c is a neutral entity in my life why did i choose this profession c why did i agree to this learning c7

Me: focused on coding....
Manager: we have that call tomorrow with the customers it guy.
Me: sure.
Manager: could you write the questions down, so you don't forget it.
Me: I Am FUCKING CODING.... I WROTE THE FUCKING SYSTEM ITTSSS MINE I DON'T FORGET WHAT I WROTE YOU PIECE OF SHIT.... -
Be nice, they said.
StackOverflow should be more welcoming, they said.
C00lHoker99 is a new contributor. Be nice, and check out our Code of Conduct, they said.
Oh, for fucks sake...
Nobody is going to be nice to drunk hobo that shits in the middle of the library.
Duplicate, no MCVE, bluntly offtopic and "do my job plz asap" questions doesn't deserve any niceness from community.
If you feel like SO isn't welcoming, that's certainly your fault.
And what now? Instead of answering good questions and being **nice to nice fellows** we are swimming in Pacific Crapocean. Nnnnnniiiiiicccceeee2 -
Well, support chat of my bank has nice avatars of persons answering my questions. But they so small...
Ok. Inspect element... Image link. Oh, it's just 2500x2500 image resized to 35x35... Now I just need a small hand-crafted chrome extension to add click to enlarge on these avatars.
These girls are really pretty though:)3 -
Allright, so.. 3 (sort of 4) dev projects at work (7 roles in total), 2 (sort of 3) DEV projects at home, 2 guys approaching to me via messenger w/ DEV/Linux questions, family (with a baby), construction works in the apartment, taking care of the farmstead,...
Whenever you ask "what do you do", I'm not even sure where to start.
Whenever you call me with "Hello, I'm calling from company X, do you have some time to answer a few questions" I sort of want to hit someone really hard before answering "yes, sure". -
Question: where on the web can you post questions that do solicit debate (the anti SO)?
I want an opinion on something from outside my own development sphere that likely does not have a right answer.
I've tried Quora but they want permissions to manage my contacts (which is just too scary for me).
Thanks in advance.23 -
Did this question really deserve a down vote?
https://softwareengineering.stackexchange.com/...
Stackexchange community is so annoying at times. It's just that a few handful of experts are helpful.
But again my recent questions on stackoverflow were answered by myself only after a week or so 😐9 -
New to databases - How is it that Oracle has been around for so long, yet have terrible documentation? Their support forums consists of condescending developers who never actually answer the questions and the forums’ format is just so bad.10
-
so i just realised my stack overflow ban came after less than 10 questions in total...
how dumb am i exactly??? man’s got real questions to ask now5 -
What is wrong with Stackoverflow mods and so called seasoned users? Why is everyone in such a rush to close questions and point you to other questions which has no relevance.
Once they do this, is just over. Explaining why they are wrong makes no diff. And you can't just repost. The question is just dead.
Genuinely think they should just burn in hell. Sick a holes. If you're not interested in answering or helping at least stay out of people's business.12 -
So I asked a question on Stackoverflow. I got my answer and solved my problem, it improved my reputation to 15 (can upvote and post comments). But I have also got a question ban now as my questions were not good enough 🤷🏻♂️2
-
So I was looking at ups's on amazon and I scrolled down to the questions section and someone asked "Would this computer be good to host a game server?" I honestly have no words😂
-
When you write LaTeX, do you code? Typeset? Program? Type random stuff so that in the end the PDF looks good enough to publish it?
I really feel like it's coding but it also is typesetting. Hmm, the questions of life!14 -
So people always complain about how people ask bad questions on StackOverflow, but it seems people on SO are also unable to properly read the question.
I literally stated in my question that I've tried using android's v7 SearchView and first thing someone answers is use the v7 SearchView, I mean c'mon, RTFQ4 -
Never get distracted.
Actually I dont but the website makes the distraction.
Currently, I am working on task and has deadline by tomorrow.
Try to find solutions over portals like SO etc etc.
In SO, I am going through the question comments and answers; yoh see hot questions. I love those. They always attract me.
And devRant to post about it.
Now you can say, why my deadline still on my neck -
Funniest Questions ask to Google Assistant
Question: “How old are you?”
Answer: “I was launched in 2016, so I’m still fairly young. But I’ve learned so much! I hope I’m wise beyond my years.”
Question: “Who was your first crush?”
Answer: “Siri.” -
What are some good android developer communities? Looking for somewhere to learn and ask questions that might not be code related, so can't be on stack overflow. What do you use? I use android for hobby projects only.5
-
I’m rarely at the initiative of a meeting, but when I am, my approach is: what questions need to to be answered? Time spent in the meeting is answering those questions without beating around the bush. I request precise answers, no "we shoulds" or vague responses. Meeting usually ends with clear answers/resolutions written down and shared so there aren’t any "that’s not what we agreed upon"1
-
DevRant should have a questions and awenser in the more tab so when people have question about DevRant, jobs and other things other people could awenser, I belive that is a good way from keeping rants and memes in a place and Q&A in other place2
-
Just had the most enraging JS test today.
I didn't know where the teacher wanted us to go with the subject, so I asked him a few questions. He straight up laughed at me and said "I didn't write that test, so I can't you help you".
Turns out he just copy-pasted last year's test, made by another teacher.
Dude, seriously...1 -
Is There any good open source test automation frameworks testers can use to verify database insertions, such as message transactions? Everyday I get questions from testers to verify data and it's so tedious looking at MySQL tables to see if there data is present.4
-
As a fairly new developer, I find it difficult to answer SO questions because all of the easy questions are already answered. Does this get less difficult as you progress as a developer?1
-
I am looking for new programming language to learn and I found D language. It looks interesting but I think that community is weak and there is lack of some usefull libraries.
For example I can not find secure PRNG.
So my questions are:
> Have you any experience with this language?
> It is worth to learn?3 -
Do you ever just have a hundred different people asking you a hundred different questions about a hundred different things at a hundred different times of the day?
Fuck man I can't get ANYTHING done, and all my answers to people feel inadequate (quantity over quality). Maybe I shouldn't have decided to help work on so many different codebases. -
Working on a library for a discord bot I'm gonna make.. the library is about 80% done and I can already build a working bot with it. But now all those new questions appear in my head about things I am going to make like "how do I design permissions" and similar stuff.... AM I OVERTHINKING THIS TOO MUCH?!4
-
Knowing a lot but getting chewed out over not knowing some obscure thing or others expecting you to be able to read their minds...smh that or then not responding to questions..so tldr; people, people are the worst part about being a dev.
-
Anyone with good/certain experience in using UIkit?
I have started using it for one of my client's projects. There is no one I know of using it. So it will be awesome, if anyone can spare few minutes and discuss with me. (or answer my stupid questions :P)1 -
I swear search has been bastardized just so you have to go ask AI questions
remember in the 90s when everyone thought access to knowledge at your fingertips would lead to world peace. now the Internet gets scrubbed to sell you another knockoff Roomba you don't want9 -
So yesterday, I had a meeting with a big client of Middle Company. And as I resigned, and don't really give a fuck anymore, it was a really funny meeting.
First I played a got my best score in 2048!!!
The client asked a bunch of technical questions, so I answered him. Then came questions about planning: Would I be able to help us with their k8 stack deployment in September.
And while the CEO was saying "We talk about it in September", I said " No. In September I will start my company.".
And the client asked, "So you will be able to work for us?"
The CEO was so pissed!! So funny!!!
And today we received a letter saying that "the client" will stop working with us(IT) in 3 months.
I can't wait to talk to a buddy who works in the HQ.3 -
So many idiots ask nonsensical questions on SO they could answer on their own if they bothered to read the fucking docs.
As if that wasn't enough, they redact their questions in a way that makes it nearly impossible to decipher what they want.4 -
So... How can dfox and trogus still think about weekly questions?
Like... 3 years after is still a thing :D22 -
Fellow next to me asked how do I deal with assignments so quickly. I told him that I don't ask any questions and just do my work. He proceeded asking me questions during the entire session. They don't really listen do they?
-
I have two questions to WhatsApp
1️⃣ Why does WhatsApp store a copy of ALL images ever sent? LOCALLY? I thought it is a cloud service. Why would I want to keep gigabytes of data on a device with limited internal storage?
2️⃣ Why no proper multi-device capability on Mobile? Why no voice call on Desktop?
Bruh WhatsApp is so limited and awkward it is a shame it somehow got so popular8 -
Challenge questions are so goddamn stupid.
Apparently I have an account with a certain online organization though I don't remember setting it up.
So naturally I had no idea of my username or password, so they asked me challenge questions.
It asked me the city of my birth, which is a place with a weird spelling. Because of that weird spelling, I never remember if I'm spelling it right (I was only there as a newborn infant) And I'm also supposed to remember if I capitalized it or not.
I hate challenge questions. And anyone doing any remotely simple research on me shouldn't have trouble learning what city I was born in so it seems to me it's a security vulnerability, nothing more.
And maybe I'm giving things away by saying it asks me that question, but it's a common security question any hacker would anticipate anyways.3 -
DevRant should have the option to make polls, so we can settle old age questions with a simple push on the button.7
-
Alright so I've been thinking of taking my skills to the next level and would like to know a few things from PRO C++ DEV out there
1. Is it possible to set up a production level web server with c++, if so why don't i see many and why are there so many with nodejs etc..
2. Client side web pages without Javascript, possible?
3. Well I forgot the other questions I wanted to ask, if I do remember you'd be able to find them in the comments
I believe in a single universal language for coding, hence I place forth such questions9 -
All the knowledge about every language in existence.
Just imagine never having your questions downvoted on SO because you never have to ask questions anymore <310 -
Why are the challenge questions that they use while changing your password so difficult? Is that why they call them "Challenge" questions?
-
Am I the only one to think companies asking questions such as those for technical interviews don’t understand what software engineering/development is about ?
- How many layers does a webservice have?
- What framework do you use for unit testing ?
- How do you do dependency injection ?
Essentially questions that they deem black and white but really aren’t. Besides isn’t the core of the work to just adapt and learn while being smart about what things you implement ? I don’t get these questions for me it’s a sign that a company doesn’t understand the work I’ll be doing.
I think for a technical interview I’d much rather spend my time on a difficult algo question in the language of my choice for 30mins - 1h than 20mins answering close minded questions that don’t have to be.
This rant is mostly due to the fact I’ve done a few interviews with two companies and both behaved like that, I’m 100% certain I had the skills to do the jobs they were offering me (they both contacted me first) but both ended up denying me because my knowledge on their specific questions wasn’t detailed enough. I could have learnt their stack in about a week so I don’t know why that mentality exists.
I might be wrong about the core of the work though… what do you think?3 -
Do you guys think it would make sense to add polls to the rant categories?
Not the first time I've seen questions like "What's the average age of devRanters?" or similar, and polls would make it a whole bunch easier to read/write answers in those cases!
@dfox
P.S. Was this discussed before? If so, my bad!5 -
Linux is great
Linux can be customized
Welp, not so much. Simple things are not possible to do.
After 1H research I can't have timestamp near each line over SSH.
I'm not talking "history", i'm talking live.
basiclly I want to see timestamp on every single output line.
Basiclly this :
https://unix.stackexchange.com/ques...
But running automaticly for each command ever.
To be fair, same problem exists in PowerShell on windows
https://stackoverflow.com/questions...
And no, I don;'t want to switch to some random halfbaked teminal.31 -
Anyone else used TripleByte? Someone told me about it awhile ago and then this morning saw an ad for it so thought I'd give it a try...
I sorta feel a some of the questions I bombed but apparently I did exceptionally well...
So was wondering are these guys for real and are they effective? I've been thru a few of these recruiting companies but nothing really ever happens...5 -
This is my first year in college specialty computer science, the first year we only study math and physics and reading ur guys rants and questions i seriously understand only 3 words hahahahah but it sounds sooo interesting!!!!!!
Side questions
Why are they concentrating on math so much in college ???8 -
Got an invitation for a telecon this afternoon. Just "some quick questions"(tm).
You stupid smurf dick, write them fucking down so that I can fucking prepare useful answers and probably eliminate the whole dumb telecon at all.
I declined the telecon, problem solved. No fucking questions means no fucking telecon. I won't burn through the project budget for ventilating your dick, you can hire a hooker for that one on your own cost centre. -
Interviews... How many of you practice technical questions like from HackerRank, foobar?
How many try but then get so frustrated after 3hrs of getting stuck that you give up and decide to just wing it?3 -
Best Experience: When I finally got my own machine so I could do whatever the heck I wanted to it. Learned and applied more than ever.
Worst Experience: Being an idiot and getting kicked off the only dev team I have ever been a part of because I asked too many questions and did no actual effort... -
I really value the skills, experience and time of my brothers and sisters here at Devrant. So I ask questions sparingly.
What is a really good website sketch/blueprint software that I can use to collaborate with non-techie humans.
Thank you for your time.
Have a great day fellow devranters.3 -
So part of my ok assignment was to Code a simple quize game. So I used a while loop to initiate the quiz. One of the constraints was that after 6 questions answered wrong the quize ends and if you make it to the end of the quize it gives you the number of questions you got wrong. 🤣 The damn code always ran to the end despite having gotten 6questions wrong.
The problem ? Turns out I needed a break. 😂😂😂 Pun intended. -
When your colleagues keep asking you questions about how to code this and that through messenger, and you keep replying them with lmgtfy links. "Was that so hard?"
-
I wrote the most jQuery I have in months today! I'm so happy I bailed at my old job, be side there they would have just given this task to an older dev who could do it faster and not have to ask questions. I only asked the internet and I got it on about 3 hours!4
-
I am writing a simple MVC Framework with PHP for learning and have a lot of small questions which are probably stupid or just typos...
Where is the best place to ask those?
I don't want to spam SO with this because most of the time I just have an error and don't even know what to ask.9 -
Just asking a few questions about anyone's opinion, answer whatever you want:
Is self studying your own responsibility and if so, do you prioritize learning stuff you do at work? Do you share it with colleges?
What is your preferred way to study?8 -
Leetcode.
It doesn't matter if you've done multiple projects with different tools, languages, team sizes and requirements for ANY company / org etc.
You will feel fucking stupid while taking too long on some of these questions.
I know interview questions are mostly to test your critical thinking skills but fuck I feel so bad after 2 evenings of doing this shit.
It is addictive though...2 -
I’m so over software engineers asking me questions when they’re more than capable of figuring things out themselves. Why do you rely on me so much for answers. Half the time I don’t even know the answer and what you’re really asking is for me to go and do the hard yakka to figure it out! Fuuuuuuuuckkkk6
-
So ive been on this project for months. Project lead did not have a role anymore and now they decide this other guy is the new project lead. This while i am the one having to deploy everything and answer questions from mr Free Lance.
Holy crap i gotta find myself a new job, these people are going nuts. -
Rant!!!
Recently, there has been this issue on StackOverflow not been friendly to beginners. I don't fully agree with that. SO is strict and rightly so because if not that, we will be flooded with repeated questions and low value answers. As a programmer, I believe when I go to SO, I want an answer quickly and fast because most at times, I'm programming and the problem I have is preventing me from moving forward. To be flooded by repeated and low quality questions and answers wouldn't help anyone. Also, on most beginner programming tutorials, were people are advised to check sites like SO when they have problems, most of them tell their listeners or readers to check if the question has been asked before, before going ahead to ask. Even SO assists you when typing your question with similar questions just to make sure you don't ask repeated questions. I rarely downvote but I understand those who do. Also, there is this talk about 'inclusivity' and some relating it to gender. It looks like people tend to slap gender and race on everything these days. To make this clear, I'm not a white male so that one wouldn't say the system favors me so I don't see the problem. The fact SO collects data about developers and it comes out that, most of the partakers are males doesn't mean SO is favoring males. SO doesn't show your gender when you ask a question. It doesn't even show your gender in your profile so what's the issue here? It will be better to get to the root of why there are few females in computer engineering and solve it there rather than blaming a site because of data collected. To know where this rant is coming from, just search StackOverflow on twitter and read the recent tweets.6 -
Heard nothing back from an interview I attended 3 weeks ago. I'm sure this sort of thing is common, but it's never happened to me before.
It's so shitty and unprofessional.
The interview was a joke anyway, bouncing between business questions (strictly non-technical, as I learned that one of the interviewers thought Bootstrap and JS were the same), a written test for a Junior (testing to see if you knew arrays started at 0), then random technical questions which didn't allow me to prove what I could actually do.
So what the fuck are you recruiting for here, a business person, Junior, Mid or Senior developer?!
Total fucking bullshit.
Surely the best way to test a candidate is to let them try to fix a recent bug from your app?
Annoying because I know I can do the job.
Fuck you and your shitty fucking questions. -
HALP!
So, I have a phone interview for a job that is basically the same job I have now, but they use c# instead of Java.
I'm only a year into my first programming job, and I'm not really sure what kind of questions they're going to be asking during this interview.
Anyone have any good examples?9 -
I wrote my first code in 5th grade in QBasic, together with a friend who introduced me to it. We made a math "game", with hard coded problems, so you'd get the same questions everytime you played ;D
-
Hey, flutterists! I'm getting curious.
Google gives me some hits, dunno how reliable they are. So here are my 2 questions:
1. Can I use flutter to develop for ios? Does the same code work on ios and droid?
2. Is there a way to use .jar libs in flutter? I have some custom tools I'd like to reuse.8 -
Rookie develops who think they are so
much more knowledgeable thank you, yet don’t stop asking the simplest of questions, preventing you from doing your work.3 -
I found myself answering programming questions on Quora this morning because of an A2A notification but then kept going and browsing other questions...
And well I kinda liked it... Usually I'm the one asking questions and haven't asked any new questions on Quora in over year...
So now wondering if this is the result of having no one that really listens to me work.... Being senior but having no direct juniors or people I can have a proper conversation.4 -
I guess ill wait until you ignore all my warnings and find out for yourself. But i am the one you keep asking questions about technology to so why do you have all the answers prepared? Why ask me?
So i just keep saying, try it. Try it your way and let me know how it goes. -
One time I got a Skype interview and the interviewer asked me to complete all the coding questions (rewrite in actual code) and email the answers to them within 10mins.
But when I open the question sheet, I found that all questions contain pseudo answer, so I ended up rewriting them on specific coding language, which was easy.
After I finished all the questions and sent the answer back to the interviewer and she told me this test wasn't testing my skill level on that specific coding language but honesty.1 -
So I moderate a few facebook groups and they ask questions like "why is the go button greyed out" and provide blocks of code written on paper then ask us to debug them.
When did new programmers become so bloody stupid I recall hiding in a darkened corner for like 3 years before asking anything online?1 -
Hello,
I have a job interview tomorrow, and it appears to be a great opportunity. Could you guys suggest some questions I could ask the interviewer about the company, and some questions I should ask about the job too?
I was thinking about asking about the corporate culture, and about the company's vision.
But apart from thr company, I would love to know about the job too. I have always ever been employed as a contractor and freelancer. So I nevrr really had to do kuch in interviews, but I'd love some help as this would be my first ever interview.7 -
People are saying to improve you need to ask questions. In case you don't have friends that are in IT, who do you aks questions? Those silly ones that google can't answer? I don't want to go to SO, that place is toxic, and asking a dumb question on devrant feels like a waste of peoples time as well. Is there a platform for alone-ish developers to ask more experienced devs questions? without being shamed to death?5
-
You know you are done when stackoverflow gives upon you: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/...
So I decided to run a scheduled job on the server just before everyone starts using the it. -
Context: remote work.
These are 2 questions so bare with me:
How do you deal with under communicating team member?
And what do you do when you have a burnout?8 -
implementing "standards" and "code review" the way "managers" want by reading stuff from a book and forcing us to apply it in real world.... their reply when we have questions that they cant answer... "the book says so"
-
I hate those multiple choice questions, where you read the first and think "that should be right but there's something missing", Cross it anyway and get an error because the right was all of the above. It's just so ***** up.
-
Every semester at my university I must grade my teachers with a poll of about 30 questions and 5 choices each with 1 question beign a negative one.
So I looked at the HTML and made a small JS script to fill out the poll with semi-random choices and adding the exception for that one particular question.7 -
So, one of my finals is to go through a Scheme tutorial with about 30 questions. There's also a project attached to the end of it. All this work, and I'm just wondering: what am I possibly going to used Scheme for? Google didn't really turn up anything.6

There are those few days in a sprint that could be extremely busy like these days.
Few days ago someone grabbed a chair, sat next to me asking questions and the chair is still there.
This week i have learnt that the chair is so dangerous, looking very inviting. -
Where can I ask questions regarding ASP.NET core and C#? Could you recommend some community sites? I already using stackoverflow but I thought there are so many limits.2
-
I have an interview later this week. Hit me with some unusual non-technical interview questions, so that I've seen them and can prepare. ;)
"What is your greatest weakness" need not apply.12 -
Have you deployed ElasticSearch to production? If so, I got couple of questions for you.
How much complexity did ES add to the project overall from a developers perspective?
How much did this differ in price from other solutions you used? In production loads that is.
✌🏼7 -
Getting started with docker swarm, not sure if I understand everything yet. So many questions to ask..1
-
Another manifestation of the irony of life:
I have a few intricate questions on StackOverflow, with a couple of upvotes. I fewer answers, also with a couple of upvotes.
But once, I posted a question due to pure sloppiness: I had forgotten to set up exception options in Visual Studio. That's my most upvoted SO question.2 -
Had my first ever technical interview! I usually interview well in like normal non dev interviews but I was so fucking nervous I couldn’t think when they asked me technical questions. I did a lot better on the written portion but damn I fucked that up. It’s for a co op position so I don’t think their expectations are super high but still fuck I feel dumb
-
So my girlfriend started working as a dev at her company. She was a technical writer and got promoted. She is now working in maintaining code from previous projects.
Now comes the questions
"how do this?"2 -
i've been banned from SO again because too many people hit downvote on my shit without telling me why, so i'll ask in short here:
How the fuck are u64* and u64 different, why can't I cast between them or between them and a double and why the fuck is C gay?
Now, again but longer:
https://stackoverflow.com/questions...32 -
I'm so scared that if I fall asleep then I'll wake up and it'll be tomorrow and I'll have to go in and get asked questions all day at 10minute intervals instead of being able to code that I'm putting off going to sleep so I have longer to adjust to this horrible fate
-
I found myself here searching if other people are annoyed at the fact that so many JS questions are answered with jQuery, completely unprompted.
Reading the rants here has given me hope.3 -
Stackoverflow is awesome but some people are stupid. They downvote for anything and put any excuses. Stupid people. Because of these people there are so many questions unanswered.
If you are one of them stay away from stackoverflow.2 -
I am going to write my thesis on Electron and plan to create another Postgres client as everything i found does not serve my need.
So my questions are: What features do u like in a Postgres client
Also Ultimate question 🙋 What would it be named 🤣😂7 -
I know this has probably been asked, but I completely missed any of it.
What the fuck's up with devRant and rubber ducks? Is there a backstory? If so, could you explain?
If these questions have been asked before (possibly multiple times), gimme links - I'll read those. I'm willing to bet that I'm not the first or last to have and subsequently ask these questions.
Even better, a TL;DR in the form of a comment is appreciated! 👍😜😂rant ducks devrant rubber ducks this has probably been asked this is probably redundant please school meh inside joke devrant origins sold in the shop2 -
Stack overflow people are all so fucking annoying, but every now and again you get a rare gem that ACTUALLY helps you, and doesn't just close your question for no reason or downvote without an answer. Like, I'm sorry I didn't spend my entire like learning computer science, I just have some questions!2
-
Might of just shot myself in the foot. Asked user on screen record to open dev tools by pressing f12 and click into console so I could visually see if any errors occur.
What have I done...the questions and confusion are overflowing. -
I just had a math test. It was incredibly hard! I donno why teachers do this! They learn us easy things and ask us hard questions.
I think I'll fail and I'm sooooo angry cause for the first time in collage i really have studied and its so unfair:/2 -
Landed my first technical interview ever with a local dev house. Before the interview I decided I could never work there. Took the interview anyway so I could note down their questions 😎3
-
We had an issue where a query to a db replica set was returning duplicates randomly when paging. Aka each HTTP call for next N results was hitting different dbs with same/copy data.
No one could figure out why... I look at the query and ask where's the ORDER BY ID?
These guys were interviewing ppl last week and saying how even they could solve algo questions they were asking candidates.
And so to explain the problem, I'm like "tell me what's the difference between a list and a sorted list?"
#why algo questions suck at predicting job performance3 -
Yesterday. Mean stack exam tomorrow. Only study for the websocket question. Go to the exam. Teacher says pick a question. Folded paper with questions on table. One is not neatly folded, so can see through. Says websockets. Pick question. Forget half the stuff about http protocols. Still got a B. :D
Now, time for coffee.3 -
Here , I am posting some questions so plzz reply in comment 😄
1. VScode or Atom
2. Flutter or Kotlin
3. Android dev or Web dev
4. Cpp or Java
5. Windows or Mac
6. Product based or Service based
7. Stack overflow or GitHub
8. Full stack or single stack
9. MEAN or MERN
10. Programmer or Devloper14 -
I'm still wondering what is wrong on my question, or more in general in all my StackOverflow questions, that 95% of the time just receive 14 views and 0 answers. I spend so much time answering and I just do it for the sake of helping other users, but when it's about receiving help back it's just tears12
-
I'm wondering, do guys that answer Stack Overflow questions are being payed for? I mean I would really love to help people and improve my knowledge by browsing SO questions and answer to some, but I really do not have the time for it (coming home at 7:30pm and still need to handle family + side projects) and feel guilty to use SO every day without contribuing.
I'm wondering if some jobs description include time to spend for the community? This would be awesome.
This is not a rant but the frustration of not having the time to help the community I love1 -
I have my algorithms exam a day after so I'm on Hackerearth trying to solve some questions and many questions there explicitly require you to consider arrays to be 1 indexed. I'm like dude wtf? why?2
-
So usually, you have a product and provide help only for the higher payment tiers. However, time and time again I've stopped using software because whenever I encountered a problem, I could never get help. It's so frustrating. Wouldn't it be a good investment to provide more help? I'm pretty sure my questions would be pretty dumb and easy to solve.3
-
So I'm about to apply to a dev job and I don't know how this is going to go over. It seems everywhere I go they want years and years of professional experience I just dont have, being a junior dev and all, but I think I found a company I can get behind. Are there any tips you guys and gals have for me for resume highlights? Possibly questions for my employer, as its one thing that always confused me, they always ask if you have questions and I feel like I'm missing something until I ask but they never seem impressed by my questions.3
-
How does a new employee ask for questions and don't get - "search on Google"?
Like doing a code-review together. It seems impossible these days, everyone is so busy...
I need that social interaction, and besides Google can't answer all questions thus mostly is information-based, and not something someone has been working with for many years that is targeted towards the place you work at.7 -
again xdebug not working and not giving any logs.
How can I at least get logs so that I could know what is wrong with it? I already tried this answer:
https://stackoverflow.com/questions...2 -
In finals, I was prepared to write code for any given problem. Instead, the professor gave code snippet itself for all questions and asked to write output. No comments, nothing. Just pure spaghetti code. Wasted so much time in analyzing the code that I had to leave a couple of questions unattended. Moreover each question weighted for around 8 marks. So, just one miscalculation means 8 marks is into the void. I'm feeling like I'd get just enough marks to clear the subject.1
-
I do not fully understand this.setState in reactjs with async functions, so I posted a question on SO,
https://stackoverflow.com/questions...
I have accepted the given answer as it makes sense. but in reality the solution does not work, can anyone shed some light on it?14 -
Just submitted a video interview for a software development position at Verizon wireless. I feel good about it but man, recording myself to answer these questions was so awkward. I usually never look at cameras, I feel so awkward around them.
-
Reading through these horror coworker stories and getting anxious what my colleagues would say about me actually. I only started working part time 6 months ago and I definitely have a lot of moments when my questions are plain dumb. The recurring theme I see in these rants is the stubbornness to learn so to everyone reading these stories and getting self conscious stick to it :) having questions and facing problems the only way to learn something and get better. Thanks for the stories everyone.

- C-Suite: What the fuck this is not at all what I needed!! My whole company is on collision course with a liquidity crisis. You fucking idiot what did you do I’m so stressed oh noo
- This twat: I don’t ask questions to not stress you out3 -
Questions around Openshift:
My company is actually triying to find out if Openshift is a thing out in the developers world. We are currently (finally) investing some money in container architectures. But are quite unsure if Openshift is a real thing out there. So my questions:
For how long are you building Openshift application PODs and why?
Or alternatively: Do you know a good source of up to date surveys around the container world, or do you know who can do good and usable surveys in that kind of area?2 -
Am I allowed to ask tech questions? Because I can't get my fucking Acer to dual boot a Linux distribution. Tried mint and lxle. Both require I go into legacy mode to boot them from USB, so I can't install them that way... Any ideas?7
-
"...what I'm looking at... uh... wait this is ridiculous... what is this... how do I update this..."
This new guy I'm supposed to bring up to speed constantly mumbles like this. He's just talking to himself. But it's so annoying that it's like he's constantly asking me questions.2 -
Worst documentation I've ran into so far are the ones that end up providing me with more questions than answers.
-
Ok......so we working on this system with a friend
we have deadline today
he's the one who wrote the code
I'm just implementing some features
maaan the dude is just not responsive to questions
and project structure and code is bad AF no comments or docs
WTF!!!!!!! -
So for the last couple of weeks, I have been trying to answer questions on stack overflow but whenever i start answering it a bloody pop up pops up saying that the question has been answered. What the fuck am i supposed to do. Fucking rat race out there😓
-
First of all, I need you to forgive me for what I'm doing to do...
So, for webdev, Ruby or Python?
Opinions, thoughts, tips, are all welcome.
- I know these kind of choose A or B questions make me a horrible person, but what can I do. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -5 -
Wrote my exam I ranted about yesterday..
THAT FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT TEACHER ASKS QUESTIONS SO SPONGY NOBODY KNEW EXACTLY WHAT HE FUCKING WANTED! AND 30% OF THE QUESTIONS WEREN'T EVEN IN OUT STUFF TO LEARN! SORRY FOR MY BAD ENGLISH BUT FUCK YOU! ARJAKXUNSIXU SKSBDKSBYJY JAKX SK SORRY SIS DJSBDJS D S BSKS

Hey guys and gals so I have another question (sorry to only be asking questions on here but I'm full of them) if you've seen my other post you know I'm brand new to programming and I'm learning c++ I'm on a Linux os and my question is what is in your opinion the best ide I could use10
-
It's so fucking draining to work with someone asking questions or trying to get meetings instead of taking ownership.
And these questions are dumb or obvious. -
In my latest interview. It's the first in a overly morose process that includes many.
Me: So, about the scope of responsibilities...
Interviewer: <translated from fart noises> "we're a dynamic company"
<translated again> do any shit some big headed brass asks of you
Me: it involves many meetings?
Interviewer: <dismissive fart noises>
Me: Is it for an open field project or an ongoing structure?
Interviewer: We have many ongoing projects, and you allocation may be changed dynamically <so, fart noises>
Me: about the salary...
Interviewer: <Extra-stinky-fart noises>
...
It went on for an hour, never an straight answer. Not even for the name of the company.
...
Me: Have you noticed that, even that you are interviewing me, I'm the one asking all the questions?
Interviewer: <actual fart> yes, you really seem to have the knack for it!
Me: ...
Interviewer: so, any more questions?
Me: Yes. Are you flammable? <actual quote> -
If anyone has like an hour or so free at some point, I would appreciate help with optimizing some code. https://github.com/ParzivalWolfram/...
(also i have to write docs on this conceptual CPU because the actual docs are a massive shitshow and this was compiled over like weeks of asking the dude who made it questions)21 -
All these MFER college people setting shitty exam questions without a correct answer trying to get our grades low so they can remove our scholarship (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻1
-
Soon even more reason for that friendly high-rep SO user to close your question as a dupe :-)
https://meta.stackoverflow.com/ques... -
Answering simple questions on Stackoverflow and gaining confidence that I have somewhat improved. Losing my mind on bugs from my shitty code just to find out the answer hours after on SO, explained in the best and simplest manner and realizing that I've actually improved only by a toe.

!rant As i posted, for my thesis I've been forced from my relator to statically and dinamically analyze some ransomware, infortunately a lot of these malwares detect the sendbox and they inibhit themselves. Are there someone experoenced who works or study these malwares and is so gentle to answeer, meybe privately, some questions of mine? Sorry for the !rant but I feel lost about these questions and I ever trust in devRant :)

I love online games and I always enjoy to play them whenever I have free time. So lately I started playing Run game and also Basketball legends and even Fireboy and Watergirl.
https://fireboyandwatergirl5.us
https://basketballlegends-unblocked.com/...
So my questions is, some of these games are built on the flash platforms. What will happen with these games when this platform will be disabled? I will no longer be able to play them???2 -
If anyone goods at objective-C / TwitterKit integration into iOS i would be most grateful if you guys could take a look at my post on SO: https://stackoverflow.com/questions...

Any grails dev here? I needed some help urgent but can't seem to get any answers from the internet or even the question I posted on SO. Here's the question:
https://stackoverflow.com/questions... -
Am I the only one who thinks those wk questions have to go away or should change since they have nothing to do with ranting? DevRant is growing and growing but since everyone is answering those questions only like 2/10 posts are proper rants.
Would be awesome if those questions are made so that people start rant about it.3 -
Since I'm not getting a lot of help on SO, might as well post it here. If anyone has experience with FFMPEG RTMP streaming and feels like helping a brother out, please do take a look :)

Having trouble getting CSS to apply to a table in react. Thought I'd ask here. You guys are probably better than SO. Please and thank you

Any good tips on how to prepare for a system design technical interview?
(So for questions like "how would you go about designing and implementing an app like LinkedIn?" for example). -
How would one go about pulling the entire post history? ...and the weekly questions? Is that even okay, and if so, do you perhaps share archival data somewhere? I mean devRant, of course.1
-
My older sister is trying to flirt and its honestly going to make me gag. Asking so many questions knowing moms in the car and said dont take long ..acting purposely childish5
-
Is there anyone who understands my struggle and can help with this? Until now I encountered only "use virtualenv" and "why do you want to do that?" crap. Virtualenv can't help here at all, so please don't try to be smartpants with that bullshit.
http://superuser.com/questions/...2 -
Not exactly a tip but do you know an app for quick-testing your skills in js, for intermediate-level, but with questions that are not too complicated (not code golf, though I like that too) so one can use it when commuting for instance ?1
-
Can we ban SO links please? Or at least add something to filter out posts with those links? Not a day goes by without someone copy-pasting their SO questions here, and it's getting fucking annoying.12
