First rant, so here goes:
def initialize
@rant = 'when the contractor your boss brought in to help, whose weekly rate exceeds your monthly salary, doesn't know the difference between server side and client side technologies.'
end5 -
I took an AI class and we'd have weekly AI poker tournaments. I beat everyone in the class every week except one, and I even beat the professor a handful of times!11
-
In my company we have a weekly meeting for the Tech deparment, so today the IT Director (my direct manager) was describing an issue we are experiencing with our DNS, and he asked
"What we should do with our DNS?"
Instantly I said out loud:
"Resolve them"3 -
seaside beers, weekly chatting with total strangers, and you get that balance

So i am about to submit my weekly report before going home and this happens. 😢
Windows why you do this 😱5 -
1825. Leaving work. Today sucks. My coworker is out and she normally does this weekly report. I need her. I don't like this.26
-
@dfox should split devrant into categories.
-rants
-advice/help
-weekly rants (already there)
-dev memes
Then people can just read rants or whatever they want without other things getting in the way.
Down vote can also be used if something is in the wrong category9 -
Wk103 got to be the best weekly rant, it’s like everybody sharing a good quote about programming, and it’s useful
-
Thank to “Weekly Rant 119” we all had to clean the place where working, eating, gaming, chilling, sex, porno watching, bugs fighting ,duck fucking, etc etc etc.
Salute to @dfox !2 -
Client initially requested the Wordpress server to have an easy one click way to restore from previous backups.
After setting up the auto weekly backup feature in Digital Ocean, the client wants to disable it because of the extra $1 cost it added to their $5/month hosting plan... 😒8 -
2008: Made my new PC go Blue Screen within 3 months. Knew I wanted to do "something with computers".
2016: CS Major. ✌(◕‿-)✌3 -
Dear windows 10
I won't mind a weekly 30 minutes update but...
My ubuntu connects to wifi in 2 seconds
My lubuntu connects to wifi in 2 seconds
My archlinux connects in 1 second(don't ask why)
My raspbian starts up and connects in 10 seconds
WHY WOULD YOU TAKE MORE THAN A SYSTEMS BOOTING PROCESS TO GET CONNECTED?12 -
Stop fooling yourself by thinking that the hurry & pressure will eventually go away if you work overtime & stretch yourself to heroics weekly. They won't, and they never will (and even shouldn't). Focus on building sustainable habits that propel you towards your goals day by day, and don't give up until you're where you want to be. Period.2
-
Dude claimed that he had good practise of DS and problem solving.
My senior gave him a tough one to solve. Couldn't. Started shouting in between the interview that we tricked him with wrong question. Senior sat him down, told him how it was a right question. Dude got pissed. Stormed out of our office. Posted a review on Glassdoor calling our interview process rubbish and unnecessarily difficult.
HAAH!8 -
So while I was reading the weekly rant from wk1, I found this bug.
// I am prroud of how productive I am 😐8 -
When someone refuses to attend your standup but then holds a 2 hour weekly mandatory meeting for status updates . . .2
-
Question about the weekly rant!
Does anyone have any topics they think would work well? We're trying to come up with some creative ideas and figure out what devRanters might enjoy the most.
Any feedback is appreciated on the weekly rant feature and possible topics. Thanks!23 -
A few weeks ago, I was joking with a friend with how PMs aren't able to understand how weird are dev time estimations and how much they love meetings.
He: "Well, we can make a meet to estimate the hours of doing that"
Me: "Or better: We can make a meet to estimate the meet of estimations"
Three days ago, we are with the PM on the weekly meeting. In a part of his lovely speech, he asks:
"What if we meet the Thursday to estimate the weekly meeting for estimations?"
Obviously we laughed instantly, and he 'forget' he spoke that.1 -
We need to be learning from other's mistakes. A good weekly topic would be "a time you really failed as a dev, and what you learned".4
-
That time I thought I crashed a prod server which I had no access to physically turn it back on. Turned out it was doing its weekly reboot. Scary 3 minutes.
-
Picking the web development field and becoming more of a business person than a dev.
I want to develop more interesting things (like games, AI, etc) rather than corporate websites and web apps. Now, I can't even write a mobile app ffs.
I can't even work on my hobby project lately.6 -
Time tracking. 😡🤮 If I’m salaried and only working on one project for one client, why the hell should I waste my time making weekly reports of how many hours I spent coding, reviewing pull requests, and sitting in (mostly pointless) meetings?6
-
I have this interesting client who likes to end the weekly call with a prayer. Once he asked if I wanted to lead the prayer. I said, “No I’m good thanks. You should do it.”7

Do you folks listen to podcasts? What are your favorite ones? The ones I listen to weekly are Geekrant, Linux Gamecast Weekly, and Linux Weekly Daily Wednesdays (done by the LGC group). I'm looking for more tech related ones, though.7 -
New AltRant update!
You can join the TestFlight here: https://testflight.apple.com/join/...
New Features:
- Weekly Group Rants are here! Now you can finally receive news about and take part in Weekly Group Rants through AltRant.
Other changes:
- Updated the SwiftRant library to v2.0, an update that was long time coming. Thanks to @Lensflare's contributions and suggestions for the SwiftRant library, both of us improved the quality of the library by a metric fuck ton, and more improvements are still on their way.
Known Issues:
- Downvoting is (still) broken. this issue will be fixed in a later update.
- Some of the layout in the Subscribed feed is a little broken. This will be fixed in a later update.
- The Profile screen's small title flickers in and out of existence under some circumstances. This will be fixed in a later update.29 -
Me: deployment exploded, the database has to be restored.
C: yeah, the latest backup we have is is from Q1 2016
Me: wat? We have almost weekly changes of the database layout, let alone the content.
C: yeah, you have to execute somewhat 60 sql files ... Have fun

I think my project manager thinks I'm terminally ill or something. I tell him I have weekly appointments at the hospital. It's just therapy. I just told him I have a doctor's appointment I cannot miss so we need to move our meetings. I'm just catching a flight lol. He's very concerned about my health.6
-
Am I the only one that thinks it's annoying when people use the weekly rant in their tags when their rant has nothing to do with the weekly rant?4
-
That moment when it's Sunday and you cannot wait for the new Weekly Rant theme to be announced on Monday.
-
Today I was writing Selenium tests and was struggling to find a good way to test a text editor. We did a weekly code review and my team lead rewrote the test ij 10 lines to generically handle all cases.
Hopefully I'll be a good dev someday. 😔4 -
Idea for Weekly Rant - What have you developed that you're most proud of?😁
Idea for Dev Rant in General - Ability to add and message friends. Groups or Communities to join and chat. 👫5 -
Layoffs happen all the time. But when you survive it and come back the next day and see the empty cubicles occupied by very senior devs who were really close to you and mentored you.
Had to go through this twice, 2014 and 2016. Thankfully we still meet up at Hooters every Friday and rant, and that's our version of a 'weekly' -

I’ve worked at six companies over my 10 years of professional programming. All companies say they track internet usage of the employees. This is the first company I have worked for that sends you a weekly summary of sites that you visit.5 -
Recently was in a recruitment hackathon for leading technology company.
So, to test ppls networking, team building skill they grouped ppl into a team.
I was teamed up with noobs, and had very bad experience.
One guy in the team was arguing to use PHP for developing a web app.
Me : What PHP framework are u good at!?
He: what is framework !?
Me : like laravel etc..
He: no I meant we use plain PHP!
Me (mind voice) : go fuck yourself, I am bailing out , I Do not need the job
Me : It's ohk we only know NodeJs , so, gave a wierd smile
He was still arguing ,but I gave 0 f***
This is considered as a fight!?
Yeah not the worst though
Apparently the recruitment ppl liked him a lot in my team!2 -
Weekly reminder that RECRUITERS ARE MANIPULATIVE, LYING ASSHOLES BY DEFAULT.
Nothing new happened. I have seen the thread about rec scums in Reddit.5 -
@dfox just throwing a suggestion out there. How about creating a weekly tips section in which everyone could share useful insight about different tehnologies/OS/languages? Or even create topics in which people could share such things?2
-
After consecutive days of no sleep for a few weeks I noticed I didn't get my DevRant weekly digest (moment of venting) and couldn't remember if it just hadn't been a week since my last or just a few long days and realized how true this was...1
-
I swear every one of this week's weekly rant could be remixed together with the sound of silence playing over it all...
EDIT: now that I've said this I really want to do it...5 -
That moment after you finish coding a site and the client comes back with a request for weekly analytics reports, on top of all the data from GA, New Relic, etc... in Excel documents. O_O2
-
It's looks like this weeks "Weekly Group Rant" is trolling all the developers who have side projects that never finished.
1. CMS like WordPress
2. MVC framework like Laravel
3. Android App like Tinder
and... list goes on.
#1, #2 and few others are still stuck on index page.2 -
Weekly Group Rant suggestion: What anti-pattern exists that still keeps being propagated or infecting other areas of your code base (like a virus)?
Code samples/screen-shots required.13 -
This weekly is getting really popular with so many rants coming in.
Shows the extent to which real coders/programmers/developers are tormented by the incompetent education system.
Here is my two cents:
Students should be taught to build their logic on paper before jumping on to their keyboards.2 -
One weekly post got me thinking.. Now I'm curious.
How fast, how reliable internet do you have at home and for how much? Which country/provider?
Me: 300mbps/14€ per mes. 99.99% reliable. Lithuania, provider: telia31 -
Guys, check your tags before posting on weekly rants. There are a few of you still posting under previous week's tag. The question and the answer don't match. 😛
Also, I think I just scared someone off because I mentioned the wrong tag. 😬9 -
Let's schedule our weekly sprint planning meeting for 10AM on Fridays. And let's chastise those who happen to be 5 minutes late (literally). It's the perfect plan, since everyone is normally expected to come to work between 10AM and 11AM. Makes. Total. Fucking. Sense.3
-
one of those days where the boss has his weekly amnesia and completely forgot an agreed feature discussion.. sigh..8
-
Bugs fixed, bugs have been fixed, bugs removed, daily bug fixing, bugs have been weekly fixed, update, daily update, weekly update, ...9
-
So i just created my own npm package. And published 3-4 days ago.
And don't know how but there is already 60+ weekly downloads.
So thanks for them who support me😅6 -
Please stop tagging rants with the weekly rant tag if they have nothing to do with the weekly rant, it makes you look attention hungry.2
-
Finally a weekly rant where I can learn something!! 🙌
Mine:
-put linux on machine
-buy a gallon of coke
-run the ide
-start skype
-skype with my bud and code
And the thing that makes me The most productive: deadlines2 -
Middle dev manager calls us all to the weekly meeting and she’s like
”Yeah, I haven’t got anything to discuss”
Inspiring!
I got to leave this dysfunctional place!!!9 -
Just finished and published iOS and Android app. Now they want to change some colors in the app theme. Never mentioned it once during weekly meetings about the app. Even tho I asked them for input. Now I have to spend half my day recompiling and making new screenshots for the store.... #fucklogic1

Pretty sure I’ve finally got over my anxiety of going to gym. Trying to move more during the day and get my weekly exercise in the mornings but my general anxiety messes up a lot.
Now I’m feeling pretty fresh for a full day of build errors 🙃1 -

Client: Can I pay it when this new feature is rolled out?
*Face Palm*
It isn't a Bi-Feature invoice, it's a Bi-Weekly invoice. -

A manager in the area, in an effort to “encourage” teams to meet their externally generated commitments before imposing mandatory extended hours, posted a chart showing Mt. Everest with weekly goals as stages up the mountain. First team to the top wins a $20 gift card. Looks just like this picture. Results will probably be similar.4

Before 2012, I always worked in cubicles and had weekly status meetings. In 2012 I moved to a big city and learnt there was something worse than cubes: the open work plan. Marketed as a way to increase coloration, the open work space is really just the result of real estate prices being expensive in cities and how desks are cheaper than 3-cube walls.
Up until 2013, we'd usually just have the weekly status meeting. Here are your tasks for the week. I'd do them at my own pace. Some days fast, some days slow, but they'd all get done by the end of the week and I'd proudly go down my list of stuff I had done.
Since then, it's all been "agile" and "stand-ups" every. fucking. day. The work is endless. A Product Owner once told me that stand ups weren't suppose to be status meetings; that you were only suppose to say if you're blocked or need help. But in every place I've worked at, they're daily status reports. You have to preform every day.
I really hate IT today more than ever. I miss the cube. I miss the weekly status reports. Today things are so high stress and higher paced and the work is endless. You can't even really pace yourself anymore.1 -
Anyone else suddenly started seeing really old weekly rants? (Specifically for me, wk4, wk11) Has the algorithm changed?4

JoyRant build 17:
I’ve added the Weekly stuff to the app:
Browse weekly group rants and see the weekly topic of a rant.
Have fun 😊

Along with weekly rant topics, devRant should have weekly polls where you create a poll on opinionated questions like "bash or zsh?". Devs would upvote one & post a rant why they prefer one over the other.
With lots of devs here, the opinions of experienced devs would really help young buds. @dfox3 -
Don't get me wrong I love the weekly rants!
...but on mondays I just genuinely don't use devRant because reading about the same topic over and over again becomes boring so quickly.1 -
It's disgusting how a package like compress-commons can have 1.3 million weekly downloads yet no documentation whatsoever and not even any relevant comments in the code. Honestly fuck the javascript ecosystem3
-
None in the last few years. But my supervisor was a gem that I wished I could pack in a bag and take with me elsewhere.
However, I can recall an old job that had a lot of "weekly" meetings that I used to sleep at. If you have a weekly meeting without an agreed upon or relevant agenda, chances are it's a snooze fest.3 -
Idea for weekly if you need some:
What's the most interesting problem you encountered/solved?
❤ @dfox7 -
Being in a university that has an eSports Academy is less exciting when you're part of the team maintaining it weekly... Well, at least the part where we had to set up a local cache server with docker & nginx was fun
-
Hmm... That's 2 yrs from now.. o.O
Mmm...ok... Keep the job, rewrite old crap (I mean code) I'm maintaining & rock at it..
Personal issues wise, get married get own flat/house & hopefully get back to climbing at least on weekly basis.. Ooh & maybe a doggo & kitteh.. xD
P.S. maybe find a phone that will outsurvive me.. or at least survive me for more than 3 months.. :/6 -
This place would be much better if we could ban idiots. I won’t give names but one wants to slit my throat and other is putin’s assole.11
-
TFW you stay up until midnight on a Sunday to see next week's weekly rant question, but it doesn't get changed...2
-
@dfox - Idea for weekly rant - worst candidate that showed up to a job interview.
Had a solid resume, claimed to be a Java king, top notch. First question after he sat down: How to create a thread-safe singleton in Java using double-checked locking?
Guy didn't know the answer. - NEXT!14 -
I don't know why, but in DevRant's weekly rant, I always find a word that I cannot understand. Even google translate is not that helpful in those cases. for this rant, the word is "Procrastination" :-/
Why some English words have to be so terrifyingly hard? These words always make me stay away from writing for the weekly rants :-/18 -
I have already accepted another internship offer.
I just received a far better offer.
And somehow I made it to the final interview round for my dream company.6 -
As a tribute to Alice's fun discoveries, here's my discovery.
If you choose the weekly rant banner on the rant feed and open the rant which is showing at the top of your screen, you will see a ghost of the banner while the rant is loading.4 -
How the fuck does a library with such shit documentation that makes no fucking sense have 43k+ weekly downloads7
-
Weekly Q: How do you keep yourself motivated?
A: No matter what - I allocate a little bit of time every week to something I really care about right now.
When I was green it was mostly learning. Now it's mostly codebase cleanup, dev experience improvement or dabbling with some feature that's not prio.
Might not sound like a lot but doing it weekly does add up. -
Been invited to a bi-weekly meeting about a project that I'm not even working on yet.
I think I'll just go and cut my own brake cables then drive home. -
Wasting time of 20+ developers to deliver a 'how to use a bug reporting system', coz:
- you've only 2 newembers in team, and
- just to have a bi-weekly meeting.
Is not productive, motivating and wise by any means.
Combined $$$/hr amount here is quite an important metric.2 -
@dfox @trogus would you guys mind sharing some statistics on devRant? I've been very curious about the following metrics:
- Daily active users
- Weekly active users
- All time rants count
- Monthly comments count
- Total users count
Thanks for reading and thanks even more for making this beautiful platform 😃9 -
a first time project owner sets up weekly requirements meetings for a new project. everyone has input, but the project owner. 4 months into building the application to the requirements gathered, the project owner says, that's not at all what I want. 4 months wasted3
-
I have to show weekly progress on my 2D game engine this monday in order to be graded.. but I can't focus due to tooth of wisdom.
I'm THIS fucking close to using these:8 -
MEETINGS
Daily stand up
Weekly status
Fortnightly update
Monthly planning
Life would be so much simpler without meetings. Just chat, why fuss over "meeting"?
As it is most of the things don't go as per what's planned in the monthly planning meeting.
Neither is there much of an update in the fortnightly update meeting. Only update is what we planned, isn't the right direction.
This will obviously screw up the weekly status. Screwed up planning is dishevelled implementation.
Daily stand up is just very sleep deprived developers, who don't wanna talk.
Make it my time's worth; say no more meetings. -
So some notification types are broken again (at least ++ notifs are not), ++ counts don't update again, search finds next to nothing, and the weekly doesn't work properly either (I saw wk288 topic once but can't find it anywhere now).
It still works better than the thing I'm currently dealing with.10 -
"You need to learn Angular for a new project. You can do it in any free time you have."
Where "free time" is defined as:
Any time left in between working on priority tasks or bugs, bugs which have failed testing and the weekly array of meetings, tech sessions and meetings to discuss the progress in learning Angular. -
#weeklyroutine Every monday morning wake up and watch new episode of silicon valley.
Loved It.Tell me about your experience3 -
I see a lot of people on this weekly rant telling they go lunch, read a book, play guitar...
And then i look at me, working in an office, only being able to silently cry in front of the screen.1 -
I just started a new job today and I fucking love it. I've learned more in a day than I do on a weekly basis in school. It's difficult but exciting as fuck to actually be able to use the technologies you've learned in a professional context.
-
Might start asking monthly or weekly questions just for the hell of it so heres number 1...
If you have a prototyping/code naming convention, what is it and why?4 -
I bought an aquarium, needs some weekly maintenance, is very comforting to watch and it is nice to see things grow.7
-
@dfox, @trogus, would you consider adding the topic for next week to be "Near miss: how I almost lost all my code/data"?
It sould be fun, and people can also learn something. Like what not to do, how to recover and how to prevent this kind of stuff...1 -

I finally returned from my hiatus, I am starting professional college now and I am starting to work a little again on AltRant! The next feature will be weekly rant group support. I am unsure about when it will be released to testers on TestFlight but it will be pretty soon I think.1 -
What is the point of working on a team in an open work environment if the only interaction I have with them is during our twice-weekly stand up?
-
It's hard to see my parents struggling financially. This pandemic has really brought us down to massive debt. My weekly allowance is just enough to feed my cats.
:(5 -
I feel like a "confess your sins" weekly rant would be on point.
Doesn't even have to be coding sins.3 -
Working with a group on a startup idea. We have weekly Google chat meetings with the full team and sometimes me and the other two founders have side calls. Our group is getting bigger so the weekly is getting longer so the 3 of us were talking about ways to make them more efficient. One was, background distractions like TV, random people talking in bg, kids...
So then yesterday the 3 of us went over a different topic and the guy who had brought up the distraction issue was in the bathroom shaving and trimming nose hairs the whole time. He kept asking questions about the agenda which we all had access to. I shouldn't even care much. I drink through the meetings anyways.2 -
Just remembering that time Britain started clapping for the NHS on a weekly basis, rather than giving them more money.
The longer ago in history this becomes, the more patronising it feels.4 -
I now have a pure hatrid for Oculus. I decided to faff around in unity with our Oculus dk, so i went to oculus.com. Downloaded their software and installed it. Then it asked me to restart my pc. So i did. Now my FS is completely corrupted and computer is bricked 😡 (Luckily i do weekly backups) I am never ever trusting Oculus again1

I think it'd be fun/interesting with all these captive devs.

Dealing with people. They take forever to respond on the simplest things...
Today I fixed a big problem. It took me 2wks or more.
If only they let me have admin on all systems needed, it prolly take a few days...
It's sorta ironic I wrote this then saw the weekly rant... -
unpopular opinion: maybe updates would take under <super long time that's overblown> if you did it more often. Also defrag your standard HDDs like every month (weekly if you really want the performance boost)8

VR is great. Been getting together weekly with my dungeon and dragon friends from highschool but instead of meeting in person we get together in vr.
Feels just like getting together in person but is more convenient since we each connect from our own homes.2 -
Treehouse shows me in my weekly "questions to answer" newsletter my unanswered 2 weeks old question. 😞☹️😫1

Might as well start off with the weekly event!
My favourite famous programmer I reckon is Sir Tim Berners-Lee, because without the work of him and his colleagues at CERN, we'd probably be struggling to talk about our favourite programmers with other people around the world - we might even still be dialing into Minitel and BBSes -
Thanks a lot NVidia... Kinda feels like this is becoming a weekly thing for me 🙄

Started a new role as a single handed Dev/analyst in a small company. Discovered by predecessor had left no handover notes on his (unnecessarily complex) weekly reports, or indeed on the table structure of any of the systems.
The three weeks into the role the managing director gets sent to prison!
For fraud.
I left...... quickly.1 -
So... How can dfox and trogus still think about weekly questions?
Like... 3 years after is still a thing :D22 -
Hey everyone, I'm sorry if this is the wrong plqce to do this but I'm trying to start a programming podcast and have a blog with a few hundred daily readers (https://www.runtimerror.com) . That moment when project managers all demand a share of your weekly hours, failing to accept that productivity diminishes exponentially with the number of projects you have to switch between.
-
Weekly drama call 1.
(the number reflects the devrant broadcast count not the actual count).
We work with a remote team and the project manager there just loves to talk. It started as something adorable(?) but it's just plain annoying now. He keeps on talking and talking and talking. We just muted him, had a good laugh and missed nothing. Nobody has any idea when he'll stop.
:/

where should I start, having something different to work on weekly, being able to work from home, alot of income possibilities, can easily start your own businesses, compared to other jobs a good community, if there isn't something you want made you can make it, and if you can think of an idea for a website or program you can make it.
-
Given how much talk there's around security, I think it'd be grand idea to dedicate a weekly rant to cybersecurity. Could spark an interesting discussion, especially in today's heated climate. Thoughts?
E.g. Best way to increase security/privacy?9 -
You know what's fucked up a part of debugging? Preparing a fucking word "report" document, in which the table wouldn't align properly.
Seriously, I hate my university's grading criteria. They ask first to send 'weekly reports', and after internship ask for 'final report' which consists the same fucking thing. -

Is there a way to display list of all weeklies outside of the devRant app, ie in any web browser?
There has been quite a lot of interesting weekly topics, but going through them on the phone is a pain.11 -
don't know if I'm allowed to post twice for the same weekly rant, but my favorite reaction was when my senile neighbor responded with "Oh that's nice! Computers are all over the place like stink on shit these days"

I hate weekly demos. Why not wait until something is done and ready to show, and then schedule a show an tell?
Otherwise you're just racing around to get some half-ass, not working rubbish in to make things look good. Yet it probably doesn't work at all, and is filled with technical debt that will make it to production.4 -

Yea so my rant: REWRITING MY FUCKING NN FOR THE FUCKING THIRD TIME8 -
The fucking release process. We release weekly which is stressful for both Devs and QA’s. Everything should be committed/promoted in our DVCS by Thursday and should be verified beforehand. The problem is, QA’s doesn’t take development builds, they only want to take whats fucking next in release. In other words WE. FUCKING. RELEASE. UNTESTED. SOFTWARE.
Man, BA’s have it easy on our team.1 -
When you have a weekly Skype call with the client, but the client doesn't show up... 😡
I guess they are still in holiday since it's the first week of the year... But one COULD send a mail before christmas about not being there in the first week.
Now I'm waiting 10 more minutes in the skype call to make sure they aren't just late.1 -
In my company there is a weekly employee benefit that each employee can get. The advantage is not carry over to next week if you don't take it the current week.
There is a junior in my department who is not taking a weekly benefit. I am sure he know about the weekly benefit because I have explain it to him before.
I said to him if he is not taking his portion of weekly benefit , can I take his instead? I explicitly said it to him that he can said "No" if he wanted and he don't need to consider the junior-senior relationship since I was mentoring him.
He said "I can take his portion if I want".
I know I got his permission but he is a quiet and reserved person (nothing wrong with it) , I am a reserved person myself.
I have to initiate a conversation and give him a chance to speak up like "What do you think about ... ? " , "X,do you think it is a good idea to ..." ,
My question is that does my junior give his permission to take him weekly benefit because he is a reserved person and doesn't like to tell "No".
What do you guy think?18 -

Weekly Group Rant - My biggest dev ambition is to make a product so great that I have enough money to buy back GitHub from Microsoft before they destroy the platform :)4
-
the daily/weekly/monthly/yearly meeting where everybody absolutely agree on absolutely fucking everything and everybody shows only positive things.
After that, you go back to work and it's the opposite.3 -
That feeling when your rant is on top of weekly rant list..
Feeling awesome thanks for the support buds ! -
Curious how devRant's "Top" (weekly) feed works? How are the posts sorted? ++ count? ++ count + comments? ++ and comments each have different weightage?
The posts seem to be in a haphazard order10 -
Whatsapp...if you're trying to switch over to a new phone or just reinstalling on the same phone for some reason.
It creates a "local" backup everyday at 2.30 am and a Google drive backup depending on the frequency you set in the settings (I usually keep it to "Weekly"). I've lost important messages this way more than I care to admit.7 -
I'm want to hear other Dev's opinions on this week's weekly group rant! Do you find that the "worst projects" are caused the most by:
A) Poor solution design and/or terrible-idea-to-start-with
B) Poor process and/or terrible project management
C) Working with terrible teammates/customers6 -
The one I use the most often is the AWS API (usually via a wrapper like boto3), but I hate it so it's not my favorite.
Ive been playing with the Bungie.Net API for a while, with the end goal of building some kind of dashboard for information about the various weekly events and such in Destiny 2. I guess that's currently my favorite. -
manager keeps cancelling our bi-weekly check in meetings.
last week she gave some of the other devs two free days off because they worked late on stuff. I never got a free day off for staying up until midnight trying to fix a broken website.
I'm a wallflower (:1 -
I’m so glad I work at a company without a dev ops... it’s so much smoother and money isn’t wasted on a non engineer, or someone who can’t jump in and assist where needed.
We have a weekly team meeting including the mech, elec and software guys... then we have a weekly open issue meeting per project only those on the project go to. We all know what we need to do individually and we just get it done... no need for the middle man dev ops to divide up tasks and shit.. we hear the issues straight from the product owners and get to work... we don’t have defined structured scrums and burn downs...it’s very agile tho.. much like how engineers 40 years ago achieved things. It’s quite awesome.6 -
Hey!! I have made an app for curbing smartphone addiction, In this app, I am just asking user to set timer for an app, and then my app will remind them to stop using those apps! I am also showing weekly/daily usage statistics. So, what should I name my app?2
-
I have been working on tickets without specs almost since I got this role
This task is big ish I have been in a conv
Like "how long" "why didnt you complain"
And this and that
I tried to have weekly meetings or meetings. No success.
Now apparently it's partly my fault
Solution should have been tell my boss how to do his job, again, apparently -
*weekly team planning session, my first week*
They: "We don't estimate on effort required, we estimate on the number of unknowns"
Me: "How do you know unknowns?"
They: "Exactly. Also, we don't account for 0 unknowns."
Me: "What if it's a simple text change?"
They: "There's always unknowns."2 -
I’m looking to start a mastermind group for those of us with side projects who would like to see them become more than that, and would appreciate a weekly sounding board / advice session from those in a similar boat.
If your interested in finding out more ++ this and drop me a note to mastermind [at] jamespearson.email -
15 mins in our weekly dev meeting, boss comes in sits down and starts talking about a project. After that he stands up and brings one of the designer in and begins to make some stuff up we could add. Are you kidding me? That is a dev meeting, he is not even supposed to be there. How rude disturbing a meeting so he can discuss stuff we could discuss later-.-1

@dfox devRant search seems a tad iffy - if I search for "wk19" I see results for pretty much every weekly rant, not just wk19 ones.3

It's Wednesday morning and I almost finished my weekly working hours.. but still had to move today's deadline.

The company i work for force me to work on two projects daily. I have to report to one of the client daily. And another client weekly. This is so much stress, I think my efficiency spoils completely, i can't be productive at work. I don't know what to do now. Do you guys have any suggestions ?4
-
It's refreshing yet odd when you go from a team with loads of meetings (mostly stand-ups and of that Scrum stuff) to one with only 2 weekly meetings.2

This post https://devrant.com/rants/2237525/...
have raised an interesting question and I have a similar one.
What is an average salary in your country and how much % of it is the cost of the internet?6 -

One manager at the Client company tells us that unless we submit weekly timesheets we wont get paid.
We are not their employees, nor do we have an agreement with them for full time work.
" Whole thought process is to structure the engagement better ,so that we can implement better governance and provide better visibility."
Anyone understand what is being said above? Jargon.2 -
Ideas for future weekly questions:
What's your favourite dev tech?
What's your favourite non-dev tech?
What do you think about privacy regulations in your country?
Story about maintaining / working with /refactoring legacy code.
Also, if you get in inspired by a questions suggested by someone, make sure to give credit where due! It would be awesome to see who's question we're answering. -
I hate having to ask for work when I'm out or blocked, it's a dynamic I'm not at all comfortable with yet it seems to be a weekly requirement.3
-
I am the bug finder! Notice the two black paddings in the top and in the bottom of the screen. Happens only with the Weekly Rant section. @dfox2
-
I thought devRant week count would have overflowed and gone back to 1.
Qhat sort of year has more than 52 weeks, feels like the estimates PMs give ... -
Well this weekly rant topic comes a few weeks to soon....
Ah what the hell, my most successful dev project is hopefully this: https://codeglass.io
Why: well that is why this topic comes to soon, I can't disclose anymore than there is on the website for now, release will hopefully be this month.
It is pretty awesome. It deserves to be called next generation. -
If my manager asked for an update only on ONE report on projects, I think he'd be a perfect manager. Right now, I'm having to update FOUR different things for everything I work on: an institutional ticketing system, management's summary view page for the same ticketing system, weekly report, and my personal logging journal.
-
Does the weekly rant page have some kind of off-by-one error? It seems to always display the last week's posts on mondays.5
-
Being the only dev to maintain a website with 20k unique visitors weekly, an admin panel for all the things you can imagine, including a custom e-shop, invoicing, etc, etc, and dozens of smaller websites is soo time consuming, and frustrating. I need a break and build something awesome...2
-
More talking with manager today. If i wanted to check out the 200+ issue backlog to see if there is anything i can pick up.
I was just laughing. I already do that on a weekly basis. It’s not that i dont want to work! -
Anyone having issue with browsing this weekly topics?
I can't go into this week's 3 Wishes specific feed.
Tried by clicking the tag and browsing Weekly Rants menu. Both directed me to last week rants.
I can only attach screenshot of weekly Rants list. Clicking and ending up at last week feed is not possible with screenshot alone.
If you guys also have same issue, I'll open a ticket.7 -
As a college student I couldn't be happier with this weeks weekly rant learning so much from a great community thank you all!3
-
My biggest dev regret is not starting earlier. I started learning how to code only 5 years ago, when I was 19. God, I wish I started earlier.

Fighting phone addiction. Do you know an iOS app that let me track my (monthly, weekly, daily) phone usage that doesn't require all time GPS tracking permission? Moment, Flipd, Offtime, BreakFree all requre GPS traking.8

I have been setting up my private cloud the past weeks. And now I am thinking about backup machanisms.
I have already planned redundant storage, and I have hardware available for an additional (on-site) backup.
I am looking to create a weekly backup of several MySQL databases and a large collection of files.
Could any of you recommend a system or method and maybe describe the reasoning behind it?4 -
I guess, the daily tab would be a better start page instead of the weekly, because I check devRant multiple times a day
-
In the last couple of years I've only really had 2 kinds of meetings, weekly stand-up or me explaining something to someone. So they're usually pretty productive.
-
Replace every other profession eventually, actually screw that remove computing profession too and just chill and let things burn2
-
I don’t know if it makes sense to post bugs here but here we go anyway.
See how the "weekly topic" text overlaps with other text at the top.
It seems like the height of this area is fixend and is not adapting to the text when it wraps into the second line.2 -
They say cloud is gonna rise up up above the sky but there's only the numbers of unemployed AWS cloudiers that souring high in sight

My family thinks I create proper value in a prestigious field of work and are aware of the amount of effort it took to get here and are also more or less up to date on what I'm currently up to. Unusual, after reading the other weekly rants :)

Bored at work. I'm feeling compelled to go back and post all the weekly rants. I'd like to have them all submitted, am I crazy? Any one else with me?
Also, this: https://www.devrant.io/rants/107080
[Weekly Rants should have started with 'wk0']1 -
Don't know if this was or will be a weekly question, but anyone have any good stories on how your opinion of a language/framework/application/etc. changed dramatically? Maybe there are some lessons to be learned for those of us that are stuck using something we think we hate, or are in love with something we shouldn't be.1

Planning to do a mailing list/website for a weekly updated list of *must-read* long form articles about tech trends, AI, finance and society.
Would anyone be interested in having a mailing list for this?1 -
Are there any off-limits items for weeklys (other than politics)? Like could we get a "bad dev pickup lines" weekly or should i just start a thread?2
-
If there could be a place here where everyone/anyone can just upload a piece of code that is not more than 20lines but does something big on weekly basis... would u love it guys?5
-
I would be great if you could filter out the weekly rants from the home page, because a lot of people write the weekly rants like a response and they don't make any sense if you don't realize that they are part of a weekly rant.1
-
How long does a week in devRant last? I mean the weekly rant shouldn't it get changed every week or what?4
-
suggestion?
Maybe we can have some sort of weekly rantcast podcast (maybe with @dfox hosting it or something through Google Hangouts) where we talk about certain topics and let a group of ranters take the word or something. Not sure if anyone would be interested or would listen to it but it sounded like a good idea to me (it would also grant the ability for people who don't live in NYC or in the US to kind of meet other ranters more personally and stuff like that)
Thoughts on this?3 -
Today I'll try what happens when I look the daily top rants at 0:00. Wait. Tomorrow is Monday. I'll check the weekly rants too. :D And what happens if I press edit on the rant, I'm waiting a few minutes and "Save"? hm...1
-
How would one go about pulling the entire post history? ...and the weekly questions? Is that even okay, and if so, do you perhaps share archival data somewhere? I mean devRant, of course.1
-
@dfox It would be helpful to see the weekly rant topic in-browser, or have a sticky post with the topic when searching by the weekly tag2
-
How do raise an issue in devRant??. The app keeps hanging after I finish one rant and click back? Sometimes it does not load any rants. I have had to click weekly rants and then back to daily rants to reload.2
-
This rant is only because I have a rant, but not related to the weekly rant, so I don't fucking like a tag that I didn't choose to come up... Fuck off wk1381
-
There is a bug that's annoying me for too much time now. If you press on a tab like 'week' and then quickly on another one like 'day' top weekly rants still show up.
-
Immersive VR/AR that works - kind of like what Magic Leap is but open, free and now.
Alas ..... unlimited budgets are hard to come by -
Do you guys know some sites with weekly or daily interesting Web development/Front End/UX articles/resources to read/get?
I often get them from tympanus/collective but its always good to know more -
