So we hired a part time sales lady to work in our office. She sits right inside the entry to our area. Each morning I am amazed that I can make it to my desk without passing out. All I can think is this:6
-
Holy mother of god, 100K!
Honestly what happened? Upvote sprees or something?!
I left devRant with 95K this morning 😱
I'll do a bigger rant later, just came out of work, most of the day went well but last hour was more stressful than anything so gonna go home (have a coffee on the way) now and prepare an emergency security blog article (something happened in the security/spy world).
Thanks peoples!24 -
"Remember that script you made a few years ago? How did you make it work with product x?"
Dude, I can barely remember how I brewed coffee this morning.7 -
Start coding for work this morning, immediately notice a ui bug, ugh. Want to get cracking with another bug I'm supposed to fix.
Fix the bug, and it incidentally fixes the other bug. Two in one.
*Suspicious*4 -
Years ago I was an application developer at a medium sized corporation and was also responsible for support for an HR department. This occurred early one morning shortly after I arrived at work.
User: My app doesn't work.
Me: What's wrong with it?
User: I just get a blank screen.
Me: A blank screen? What happens when you hit a key?
User: Nothing.
Me: Do any apps work?
User: No, I just get a blank screen.
Me: Is your monitor on?
User: Yes, I turned it on.
This type of witty banter went on for several minutes when the answer suddenly hit me.
Me: Is your computer turned on?
User: Do I need to turn it on?
Me: Did you turn it off before you went home last night?
User: Yes.
Me: And do you normally turn it on in the morning when you come in?
User: Yes.
Me: Then why didn't you turn it on this morning when you came in?
User: I didn't know I needed to.
It was at this point I heard the programmer over the cubicle wall from me burst out laughing. He had been listening to the conversation and couldn't take it anymore.
The really sad part is that this was not an isolated incident. This kind of stuff occurred on a semi-regular basis with this individual's department.10 -
Conversation in (not so far) future:
Me: Sorry boss, I can't get to work this morning. My car is updating. Automatically.
Boss: Oh you have that Windows 10 car, you can work from home today.
Me: Boss, but my computer...
Boss: Oh, okay it can wait till tomorrow.3 -
I greeted my staff this morning with the phrase
"Morning, mind if I ruin your Friday?"
They laughed, but won't be soon enough. The task we've been working on for weeks, ripping apart the codebase changing it to work a different way, fixing a tonne of bugs, making it faster and simpler to add features too. Well business has decided they want us to stop, undo it, spend a month on something "with higher ROI" and then finish it off after that.
Business are expecting this to have no impact on any of the timelines and just to be like flipping a switch. Now obviously I won't let that happen and fight back for more time, but yet another session of compromises, arguments, and yelling. YIPEEE!!!!!!12 -
Got to work this morning only to find out devRant is now on the list of blocked social media sites here. Let the job search begin.17
-
This is why I love working where I work. I worked extra hours until 9pm to get an ITest environment ready for one of my customer teams. I came in this morning to a little prezzie and a thank you card signed by the entire customer team. This is what awesome culture looks like.10
-
Yesterday: "This fucking logic makes no sense. I can't work this shit out!"
Today (first look at the problem): "Oh... I think if I do this and this... Yeap, that'd work"
I love fresh brain thoughts in the morning.8 -
My LinkedIn profile bio:
... however I’m not interested in hybrid mobile or contract work.
My LinkedIn “notes to recruiters”:
... I’m not interested in hybrid mobile or contract work.
My preferences:
- ticked full time permanent
- listed native technologies in the tag selector.
Email this morning:
Hi are you interested in the below role:
Role: Hybrid mobile developer
Salary: xxxxx
Type: 6 - 12 month contract.
No I am not you fucking fucktard. Read my fucking profile or go fuck yourself with a fucking cactus!9 -
• Good night’s sleep (8-9 hours)
• Clearly defined requirements.
• A fun challenge to solve.
• An idea of how to begin.
• Music! Something fast paced and/or harsh. I find soft tunes, good lyrics, etc. are usually very distracting.
• Deadlines help, too, even if they make me stressed out and work too much.
• No political BS / hateful and intolerant political comments from my coworkers within the past day or two, as being called a horrible, racist nazi by association absolutely kills my desire to do any work for them. Going two days without something like this happening is exceedingly rare.
• Being left alone, *especially* in the morning before work! The more distractions, the harder it is focus, even if i have peace and quiet later on.7 -
I really fucking need to learn to relax/chill out.
Fucked up something at work a few days ago but it didn't seem to be that big of a deal.
Then, yesterday, someone put a ticket on my name from the person/account I fucked something up with.
I spend yesterday evening and this morning worrying so much that I literally constantly had to talk myself down/calm
Asked this morning if it would be fixable easily because I couldn't hold my nerves anymore.
"oh yeah that'll take just a few minutes, just put the ticket on my name!"
I seriously need to learn how to control this 😞15 -
Morning Deployment.
Me: Let's add this application to this server.
Deployer: Alright.
...
D: Done. Please verify.
Me: I'm seeing errors. Send me the logs.
D: Sure. I also updated the framework to a version that wasn't tested.
M: Yeah, that won't work. Roll it back.
D: Fine.
...
D: Done. Please verify.
M: All the applications on the box are broken. Please revert to the snapshot before the Deployment.
D: Oops, I didn't make one.
🙁😟😢😭😤1 -
I'm used to go to work by bike every morning, but I'll make an exception this morning in particular 🤔18
-
So this morning my girlfriend just woke up and pressed the hue "lights off" button over and over again and yelled: "The fuckin light switch does not work". Then she realized, that the light comes from the sun.1
-
I was having dinner yesterday and I suddenly get a message from someone from another team.
Them: Hi
Me: Hi
(No response for 20 mins)
Them: I'm having some problem with your service. Its not working when I do <task>
Me: Okay, let me look into that.
Them: Also, <task2> is not working
Them: And <task3> has problems
Them: Could you also look into <task4>?
Me: (visibly sweating) Let's discuss this in detail in the morning.
[Next day, morning]
*convinced that the service has a major bug*
Me: Yeah, show me what is causing the problem.
They show me what they tried. Turns out they made an invalid call and got an error, AS THEY SHOULD, and reported that as a bug. And all the other tasks were because the first call didn't work.
:|5 -
OK morning rant from yesterday.
Get into the venue, connect my surface to the dock, keyboard won't work.
Try more USB ports, try another machine, keyboard (corsair k70) is totally broken.
Ugh.
Fine.
Disassemble keyboard, someone asks me a question, turn around and knock full coffee cup over my surface book.
Fuck sake.
Now I need a new laptop.4 -
My day.
6 am: 2yo woke up
8:30 am: start work (from home)
11 am: go get breakfast/lunch
11:30 am: work call. while driving. Learn nothing new.
12:00 noon: infuriatingly slow errand
12:30 pm: work call. Learn nothing new.
1 pm: finally get to eat. It's cold. And terrible.
6 pm: 2yo finally goes to sleep (missed nap)
9:20 pm: 2yo wakes up screaming.
9:30 pm: find 3 or 4 tablespoons of leftover tuna in the fridge. No bread.
10:45 pm: I finally finish my work (super-urgent friday-morning release of a next-Wednesday-morning deadline... Yeah idfk.)
11:29 pm: 2yo stops yelling and screaming and goes back to sleep
11:39 pm: finish writing this while in bed.
11:40 pm: Sleep?10 -
You can work from anywhere... anywhere in the world!
Hmmm... Yeah, right! But not when management likes warm bodies at the office.
I hate, hate, absolutely HATE having to travel to work, spending at least 45min to an hour in traffic just to get to work! 😤😡 And then rinse and repeat to get home... which means I'm up at 5:30 every morning to be at work by 7:30, only to get home past 18:00 - traffic permitting! *sigh* 😩12 -
A co-worker/friend came in to work this morning and told me how amazing his interview went yesterday and how amazing the company is. He said he won't know if he got the position till Monday after they interview the other guy.
I didn't have the heart to tell him that the other person they are interviewing is me. I think it might get awkward when Monday comes and I'm not at work and he realizes why.15 -
Every. Commit. My Boss. Makes. Is 'cp'. I come in this morning to find 1882 insertions, 143 deletions to master, and this is the commit log for the entire weekend.
How. In the fuck. Am I supposed to effectively work on this project. If I can't keep up with changes.10 -
Oh hey i should go to sleep early and work out in the morning.
Or i could implement those new features for my library ive been thinking about.
Or i could polish up some of my older sites.
....or i could stay up till 3am, reading subtly gay korean comics.4 -
We received an urgent email from a client this morning that needed addressed immediately. We knew it was not going to be easy or fun so we did the sensible thing and began a rock paper scissors tournament to see who would work on it.
I lost... But then we see a follow up email from my boss saying he is handling it. Win!
Fast forward 6 hours, he comes out of his office and hands me a piece of paper and says he is too busy to work on it so I need to do it before going home. The paper is the email from 8am this morning... He did absolutely nothing with it for six hours except print it because a digital copy isn't good enough I guess.
I ended up working late, got yelled at by said client, and still haven't finished the fixes.
Worst of all is that I missed part of shark week because I stayed late.12 -
when there is no project I work in, I am just a lazy ass. And that's what happened this morning after I waked up.
Me: *bring me phone, enter the toilet and open devrant.
~30 minutes late~
Wife: *knock knock* are you there?
Me: oh hey, yes I am
Wife: it is devrant again?
Me: 😶2 -
127.0.0.1 sweet 127.0.0.1
I don't want to leave my bed but it's working time.
Another day of happy coding :)1 -
Sent a corrupt .rar file to a client's nephew/cousin to upload on their server (he managed the hosting account) in a bid to buy myself some time to finish the project. It worked! I was given the login details to upload the work myself the next morning. They didn't understand Git.
-
It was like 9/11 at work this morning. Someone had clicked a link yesterday that recursively encrypted our entire file system. Thank god for backups.6
-
My morning routine:
6.45 - alarms goes of
for (let i = 0; i < 11; i++) snooze()
7.40 - reluctantly drags myself up from my bed and puts on coffee
7.45 - make breakfast
7.47 - was breakfast
7.48 - open devRant
8.08 - realize how long I've been eating breakfast and write a short post about it
8.19 - hopefully I'll get out in time for the bus leaving by then.
8.42 - arrive 42 minutes late to work8 -
So I get to work this morning and see this interesting little contraption on my work colleague's desk.
Safety first: make sure there's a warning sign... Lol.
No idea what he's doing with it though, guess I'll find out later.6 -
Shit morning, I work in tech, so I guess it is related haha.
First, I wake up and it is cold. Like -12 degrees Fahrenheit. With wind-chill, feels like -29 according to Google. Then, while getting ready for work, my only belt breaks. Not a little, but literally splits in half! Fucking sucks, as my pants keep partially falling down and my shirt keeps untucking.
I go out in this cold that could kill a polar bear, go to start my car. Can you fucking guess? Dead fucking battery. Fuck! Now I am super late to work.
Make it to work, and guess what? My manager just promised 100% completion by Friday, and we are weeks behind! Fucking sucks... I think my coworker snapped, as he keeps hyperventilating at his desk for no reason. Oh and our best coder just quit...
Waiting to either wreck my car or find out my dog is dead when I get home...4 -
Manager: *taps dev on shoulder* Hey I noticed a minor bug I think
Dev: Sigh…. So then create a ticket for it
Manager: Can’t you just fix it right now?
Dev: I can but I’m currently working on that other issue you told everyone was “top priority” at the morning status meeting. Should I switch to actioning this minor bug instead?
Manager: Don’t switch just multitask and work faster!
Dev: …8 -
So due to contracted work I am in a team internal chat, yesterday morning I woke up to a notification with a full group tag with "we need to remove all fags, they don't work out the way we planned" - he meant to type tags - there's two members that are gay and got hired just recently lol9
-
Loving the ++ / -- buttons! I was happy to see that change rolled out this morning.
Keep up the great work guys!1 -
Woke up this morning with a fuck this shit mood. I need to write test specs for a system I don't know shit about, and it seems no one who work with this system wants to talk to me, so I gave up and started devranting and reading a game dev book. Fuck this shitty job.2
-
I arrived at 8am sharp today, SHARP, I usually arrive 2-3min earlier, so I can start with my actual work at 8am sharp, but traffic was rough and my scooter wouldn't turn on, so I wasn't able to.
Suddenly my boss calls me into his office, being all like "you are late everyday, you won't start work until 5 after 8 yadayada". Wtf?? You know I have a clock on my desk and I always check the clock when I'm arriving at work? (He has security cameras everywhere, so he can actually see me check the clock every morning). This morning I arrived at 8am sharp and the only reason why I started with work late is because he thought it's necessary to remind me to be at work in time. Now he expects me to start with work 5min early everyday, fuck off!20 -
Don't do like my work supervisor:
Step 1:
*gives task*
Me, starts working on task early in the morning
*task requires his interfering, and is stalled without it*
Me, messages supervisor
Step 2:
*supervisor takes the whole work day to reply, saying that he didn't have time to look into it*
Step 3:
Me, does almost nothing at work the whole day; closes laptop upon seeing the message of the supervisor
Step 4:
Profit: go home early3 -
*it’s friday and everything works*
> Commit
> Run my project on monday morning
> Feature doesn’t work
> No clear error message
> Everything’s gone to shit
> Nobody knows how to fix it
> 🙂🔫5 -
Manager: Morning Alex, how are you?
My Brain: I'm fan-fucking-tastic, I've had 1 hour of sleep, hurt my back, feels like my tail bone is broken, struggling to walk, every piece of code I've written for the past 3 day's has been a complete waste of time and I'm at work...
Me actually: Good thanks .-.3 -
Thank you Google for reminding me that if I start my commute. RIGHT NOW. I can be at work in time for 07:24.
When the fuck have I ever been at work that early? Just because it's morning and I'm awake doesn't mean I'm fucking rushing of to work.
I LIKE TO NOT STRESS IN THE MORNING AND BE COOL AS A FUCKING CUCUMBER.8 -
Don't fall asleep doing dev work. Your laptop may migrate while you sleep and drop on your foot the next morning as you pull yourself out of bed. 13" MBP at 3 feet vs my foot.4
-
This morning i wanted to work on my freelance project and it was corrupted for some reason, i started panicking, shed some tears, did a few shots, shed some more tears and after about 30min of doing this I realised that my project is on github and everything's fine now
-
Friday Eve: Closing eclipse project happily at work. Everything works sorta fine.
Monday morning: Opening eclipse project again. Everything is like i left it. "Main class could not be found."
What the fuck eclipse?4 -
Joined a call during a potentially important life event. Work laptop password expired this morning, personal laptop didn't connect to vpn, desktop not connecting to vpn. No one knew what's wrong on the call (just that it's not working).
Not a good call.1 -
Goooooooooooood morning, devRant, This is me after 8 hours of work, and barely 5 hours of sleep followed.11
-
Drinking is all fun and games until you need to come in to work next morning." The fuck is a JavaScript" is what my brain is at the moment.7
-
Oh boy my boss wants to talk about my "working times" since I enjoy starting work at 5am. Am I this weird to like working early in the morning?13
-
Me: okay brain! We had our morning coffee. We're ready to work. Lots of things to do today.
Brain: yay! I feel unstoppable! Can't wait for logic problems and amazing things we're going to build! What's the plan?
Me: great! Today we're going to work on the ios implementation of our app. Where should we start?
Brain: ...
Me: brain?1 -
I shut down my laptop at 1630. After that, I officially no longer give a shit until tomorrow morning. My phone has Slack and Outlook, but neither is allowed to even run in the background. They're there for when I need them, not for when someone a work needs me.4
-
When your week has been so busy and exhausting you remember at 1PM Friday you have a deadline for Monday morning and force yourself to do a weeks worth of work in 4 hours and deploy it on a Friday without QA testing!
To future me - I apologise for Monday’s headaches. -
I love to code, it scratches my creative itch
And i love to work, it drowns my productivity anxiety
But I dread every morning when i wake up to work on my current employer's project
It's that kind of combo of code base spaghetti and all over the place project management that sinks my galleys
Woe is me...5 -
Employer msged me around 11pm
She wants to talk n finalize on which assignment I will work on
And what's the best time to talk
I told her in morning if she have no issues with that
She replied ok
But haven't called
My friends told me she is offended
Wth
Seriously need your input guys
Have I done something wrong?
Is it necessary to talk right away ?7 -
I NEED MY SLEEP FFS!!! It is 06:20 in the morning and I am already on the train to work because one of our managers felt the need to plan a meeting from 08:00 on monday morning to explain EXACTLY why something does not work.
Needless to say that she is no dev (or has technical know how)!
But the best part is:
THE INVITATION FOR THE MEETING WAS SEND OUT FRIDAY EVENING SO THERE IS NO PREPARATION-TIME WHATSOEVER!!!
Fuck5 -
Suddenly there's this tight deadline, everyone's pumping hours in, I am the one that has to discuss with everyone and integrate their work into mine. So I schedule an early morning meeting with a colleague, whose work is crucial in order to continue integrating the others' modules.
30mins into the meeting, he's not there yet. I reach him
"Oh, sorry, I forgot to mention, I'm actually not available today, and until 3 days before the deadline"
Well isn't this great.5 -
That moment when...
You’re supposed to be doing work.
You have a deadline.
It’s your sister’s baby shower and you promised to help.
Sis comes over every day to hang with family.
I’ve still not managed to get any work done today, video games and hanging and baking have had my time 🤣
I was up from 12-1 making jelly shots from scratch because my mum wanted blue ones and couldn’t find any blue jelly 😂
They’re bubblegum and for my first attempt I think they look pretty sick.
Will have to find out whether they set in the morning 🙈2 -
My pain medication makes me drowsy all the time but only lets me sleep at inconvenient times. For example, I got to sleep at 5:30 this morning. Work up at 6:30. But my body will be more than happy to put me to sleep in my computer chair at random intervals throughout the day.
Guess I'll get to work, then?1 -
Came into work this morning. Saw my machine off and some guy fiddling with the electricals. Don't worry boss, I wasn't working on anything terribly important that probably didn't get properly saved when your henchman yanked out the power cables.
This place is the fking worst.6 -
I became a programmer so that I could have the privilege of working remotely. So I am at home, my mom's place that is. I can never get in the "concentration zone" first thing in the morning, because before I know it, my mother and sister are having some stupid heated up argument about clothes and shit, and it bothers me anyway through my headphones -.-
Now I think I'd rather work in an office.8 -
Well i was between jobs at the time, looking for something, anything to fill in the black hole being created in my wallet.
I applied online though this company’s website and within 20 minutes was on a phone interview setting up a face to face, this was Monday afternoon.
I went in on the Wednesday morning with the manager, no cv, no resume, no examples of work, we talked, did a couple of brain teaser questions and Friday morning I had the job 😂
I have never put so little effort into getting a job before but it was all a sham, the workload and requirements this job constantly sets out to kill me with are godly.
3 years later I’m still alive ( somehow ), and no blood has been shed.... yet. -
Slept in this morning, left the house 20 minutes late, got to work an hour and a half late.
What?!2 -
I just got my Python project working on my new work PC!!! It took all morning 😂😂😂😂😂
I had to basically hack my company so I could do my job.
More specifically, I had to install a proxy server so Python, and other CLI tools, could access the internet via our company's NTLM/web proxy server.... After some IT morons reconfigured it... without testing or providing us a way to continue using it...1 -
I spent four days doing a rewrite for a possible performance boost that yielded nothing.
I spent an hour this morning implementing something that boosted parsing of massive files by 22% and eliminated memory allocations during parsing.
Work effort does not translate into gains.17 -
When your work laptop decides it wants to take 45 minutes to update Monday morning...
(I'm looking at you MacOs...)9 -
People distressed the fuck out of me today.
So now, 2:18 in the morning, I'm in bed, wide awake. Because anxiety is shit.
... And I have to be up early to do the work that I didn't do today.
Smh...
Why do people have to be such dicks?24 -
Updated an online profile on a jobsite this morning for a frontend job. Got called this afternoon:
Recruiter: “i have this great frontend opportunity for you. Are you interested and can i mail the vacancy over?”
Me: “yes i’m looking for something so mail it and i’ll get back at you”
A few moments later...
Recruiter mailed a backend function
This is why people don’t like to work with recruiters.3 -
I swear to God, I have gut wrenching feeling every morning before work or when I think about work. My stomach actually hurts now.4
-
Messed up my sleep cycle again! Its 5:30 pm here and I have just woken up. Now the night is going to pass by coding runs, gaming streaks and perhaps a movie. In the morning again I have to be at the office to work. Will have to stay awake for 30 hours or so. FML!3
-
The worst moment in my life is getting up in the morning. I feel like a fucking undead zombie every single day over again.
I want to fucking sleep and work later.5 -
I must admit I like Microsoft a lot, but today, I hate them. Yesterday the Windows 10 anniversary update was pushed and I was forced to install it. As I had a day of meetings I did.
This morning I started my laptop and and browsed to one of the web apps I'm developing for my client. The website didn't work. Turns out Microsoft uninstalled all specific Windows features, such as IIS, MSMQ, and much much more. Guess I'll be spending my time this morning or day to reconfigure my system. Happy anniversary Microsoft.6 -
I walked into work this morning and before I even pulled my laptop out of my bag a PM asked if I could make a "quick change" for a client 😑4
-
Today I had to give the most awkward excuse to my clients for delaying my work.
"Hello, I am sorry to say this job would be a little delayed as I managed to break my MacBook charger and will not be able to get a replacement until morning. I hope you understand"
Well I certainly do hope they understand. -
A burden has been lifted off of me. The burden of social media. I hate it with every ounce of my soul(except twitter and devRant). The amount of time wasted it is unreal. Deleted my instagram last night and my snapchat this morning. It feels so good!!!!! Sure my classmates think I'm crazy but it is worth it. No negativity more time to focus, work and game. I think it is a huge win.6
-
Here's a weird gripe: sometimes I wish I loved my job less. It stresses me out but I didn't work at all this weekend and sitting down at my desk early Monday morning I realized I missed it.2
-
Yesterday I had to start the windows 10 partition on my work laptop in order to use a shitty conference call software that works only on Windows. Windows decided that it was time to upgrade the system without asking me, so it deleted grub from the MBR, and destroyed my Linux partition (I had to recover it from a backup sector and it was full of errors).
Result: I wasted my morning fixing the laptop.
Thank you Microsoft. -
Quitting nicotine starting tomorrow.
Anyone have any tips or advice to expedite the withdrawal process?
I have already decided I'm going to start going for morning runs and take probably 3 hot showers a day.
My biggest fear is that I'll get insomnia and I will not be able to keep up with my school work due to fatigue17 -
The problem when you fall asleep while coding...
you may have really good thoughts before you pass out, you want to formulate them properly so "you" in the morning can get to work immediately, so you close your eyes just for a sec to think. And then you wake up at 10am and you have no idea what was supposed to be the ending of that TODO.
shit5 -
Sunday morning. The sky is blue, the birds are singing, my computer is booting up because I have work to do.
-
Not a rant but I'm not sure if I made the right choice. I got really curious this year in cloud infrastructure and started studying for my AWS Solutions Architect Exam. The company I work for (large company) allows me to switch roles/teams. Last week I was so bored with frontend I requested to switch to the Platform engineering team. The Engineer manager slacked me this morning....
PE Manager: I'll see you at standup this morning.
Me: Cool ill be there at 9, where is it? By the cafe?
PE Manager: No, in hell. Glad you joined the team 😃
What did I get myself into.1 -
It's Monday morning. In our company there are 12 employees. Our work starts at 8:00AM and am the only here. This people are lucky, whenever I come in late, there are always trash talk behind my back.
What the fuck is going on in this world.3 -
When you get called back into work at 5:30 in the morning for an urgent problem... Come to find out its because, "I forgot my internet access password, can you reset it...?" Are you shitting me? Fucking (L)user! In taking today off, fuck this.
-
On the morning of my 4th day at the new job I woke up with that feeling in my stomach "I fucking don't want to go to work anymore".
it took 3 days. Must be my personal best. -
Weirdest morning in a while:
- good morning!
_ good morning
* walk over to colleagues desk to see what he’s working on pure out of interest*
_what do you want?
-nothing just curious
_do you want to fight?
-wtf?
The more i work with fellow developers the more i realize the special kind of people we actually are.8 -
everyone is here like "yes the weekend I can finally work on personal code projects" and I'm just like "yes the weekend I can finally work on stuff the project manager promised the client for Monday morning" # whatstheweekend1
-
I worked really hard to make this girl my friend at work. We go for morning breaks around from 10:00 AM – 10:30 AM.
And then this new guy joined the company sitting close to me and we become friends. This new guy finds my girl friend really awesome and they are getting closer everyday and they are leaving me behind now and separates me with almost all the conversations during morning break meet.
Today, during the morning break. My girl friend said that I have changed and don't talk to her much like I used to. Way back when we met I really clearly told her that I have anxiety and social disorder so please bare with me and she told me that she will be there for me as a good friend.
I'm not sure what to do. I'm going to lose a good friend really soon.5 -
When I was in college I was working on a game in Java using Slick2D. My folks were away on holiday so I had the ability to drink in the house (I was over 18). I worked on this coursework piece whilst drinking.
The next morning I went into college with my work and found that it had a massive memory leak that was included by the work that I’d done whilst under the influence.
The issue was fixed (quite easily tbh) but everyone in my class reminded me for the rest of the year...5 -
Freelance client calls freaking out because she needed the website changes done by yesterday morning because she had some huge meeting with potential investors....
I feel bad but I don't, she never told me anything about needing it done by Sunday morning.
This is exactly why I hate freelance work. Lack of communication and then they blame you5 -
How often do you dream about work?
I had a dream about a day's work, and in the morning I have to work again. Who will pay me for another shift?😣1 -
Me yesterday evening:
"Fuck java, fuck JVM, fuck everything about it, shit doesn't work for some reason, no runtime errors, no compiler errors, no syntax errors, nothing, *turns off computer*".
Me today morning(coffee = false), after comparing the documented example code provided by the API with one someone else made, I've noticed that the one provided by the API was messed up and couldn't work.
"Lemme change that one value in the properties...okay here we go"
Shit works out perfectly.
FUCK FALSELY DOCUMENTED CODE
FUCK DOCUMENTATIONS IN GENERAL2 -
I got an extremely hard task in the morning, I asked for some clarification and I got them at 13.23.
Boss ask for updates at 13.45 (during lunch pause).
I work on it 2 hours like never before, he calls me and I said I can manage to finish in half an hour + testing.
I work more 10-15 minutes, time is around 16.15.
2 other enormous bugs shows up on the same project, boss ask me to take care of them, and I manage in only 2h to look up something like 40 web pages and correct each of them, write reports and inform the affected people. After it I work more 15 minutes to report and finish small tasks. Ended up working almost 1h more on a non paid extra time working contract.
In the morning, while my boss was aware I spent that time
In the morning boss ask "everything went fine with the big project, right?"
Because
The
Client
Is
Angry.
I already got a burnout from this job, I really can't go on like this.2 -
Anyone else have this, seems like you can do double the work in late night pm/am than in day am/pm..
And I'm starting my internship next week.. gotta be a morning person now :/7 -
Programmer like working at night (at least I like working at night). Would it be cool if there is a company which the work hour will start at midnight and end at early morning?
Customer facing side of the company can work the regular hour while developer will work at night.10 -
After working two 85 hour weeks and staying until 6 in the morning before customer demo, the project manager decides to invite the team for dinner and drinks after work, as if my family doesn't miss having me home for dinner, and I haven't spent enough time with my colleagues!!4
-
The air conditioning unit for our data room failed at 4AM this morning. Everyone got to work this morning with and all of the servers and network equipment was shut down. the room was over 90 degrees Fahrenheit.6
-
Every f*k**g morning.. "Good morning _____, goood morning!" I'm so tired of these work from home Zoom calls with my boss. OMG. Everybody gotta suck her dick like we like her. Aaaaaaah. #tears2
-
It's 6am and I've already started my work day because I am my most productive first thing in the morning. When they debate against WFH and flexibility, they don't talk about how different people feel more awake and present at different times. I know devs who work better in the dead of the night. 9 to 5 in office just ain't it.7
-
ffs.
Got to the office in the morning. Boss says, ok we want to do a toast for one thing or the other. Got a nice glass of red wine. drank it. Nice wine. got back to my computer, and started to work. the boss man calls me back. I say whats up? he says, bottle of whiskey....
drunk coding is fun!5 -
Client: Can I see an update of the work?
Me: Mails the client the first update has been published.
Me: Mails the client the second update has been published.
Client: Can I see an update of the work?
Me: Did you see the last e-mails I sent this morning?
Client: *crickets*
Yet another client that expects we do cheap and fast work, mails us daily he wants to see updates, and constantly requests new features... but can't be bothered to give us the feedback we need for those features, or even read his e-mail.
Next week we'll get an angry mail that the features aren't exactly what he expected, mark my words.2 -
when everything you attempt to type in Monday morning is riddled with typos, because your keyboard at home is slightly different than your keyboard at work1
-
Came into work this morning and my scrum master has decided to take my desk and now I'm working off my laptop screen. I forgot he needed 3 displays for Excel, Outlook and JIRA.1
-
One of the devs didn't show up to stand yesterday, remote or in person. Turns out he was in the hospital for seizures.
They asked me this morning to work Sunday and I said no. It's not worth the money and I'd rather have the weekend. I don't need to be prone to seizures to know that this level of work is deeply unhealthy.1 -
Wasted all morning trying to work on my defense. Brain is not responding. Then sat for some data exploration cuz I got tired of wasting time and brain is like "woah! I love this! Let's do this!". 😐
My defense is gonna be a shitshow. FML. ☠️1 -
That moment on saturday morning when you realize what you missed for the last 5 months in the framework you are using at work and realize you can delete about 5000 loc with some refactoring...
Fuck guys I just got a huge Eureka moment that probably made me level up.7 -
Wake up in the morning and my girlfriend told me I have been mumbling about bugs all night. God, I need new projects, so tired of maintenance work
-
I’m getting fed up of working from home. I now get changed in the morning and wax my hair to feel like I’m going to work, even if I have no team meetings!2
-
Morning, start work, play a song for concentrating 🔥.
Calls the CEO 🦸 stop the song, answer, play, calls the PM 🧞 stop, answer, play, calls the stagaire 🧚 calls colleague🏃calls supplier🤺 song is at 1:00, restart song, song is too good to listen like this, play from the beginnig, calls the CEO 🦸 -
Came to work this morning with a bunch of cards coloured red, marked "urgent"...
And it's Monday... the day after Sunday...
The blues day...
Blue's my favourite colour, but this blue (and reds) I do not like...
Ok snoozy mind of mine... wake up!!1 -
According to many of the rant posts, I am not a programmer.
I wake up 8 in the morning, eat breakfast at home and then get to the office at 9. Work till noon and then enough 1 hour lunch, back from lunch work till like 6-7 pm, have dinner at office then head to the gym workout for an hour to an hour and half and then head home, shower and sleep at 11:59 pm.7 -
I saw this movie today where an antisocial guy just wanted to be left alone. When this didn't work he produced a scheme to change his environment to his liking using many cool inventions.
He seemed like your average developer but about one hour into the movie I saw something that only happens in movies.
He actually met the deadline of stealing all presents by dec 25 morning, I mean... No deadline extensions!1 -
My morning so far:
Walk out the door.
Miss bus I was supposed to have, no big deal I'll just wait for the next one (should be just 15 mins).
Next bus is 10 minutes late, seriously?
Get to the train station just to see my train doesn't go because of an outage. Screw this I'll work from home.
So how's your day going?6 -
Work in the morning and here we are devRant, we have to quit doing this to ourselves. We need to take a break. I'm sorry, but you have consumed my life. The chuckles, feed refreshes, and +1s will be but treasured moments I have with you. Wait.. Who am I kidding? I need you! Don't leave, I'll stay with you forever.1
-
Are you an evening or a morning person?
I definitely work best just after I've woken up. At 7am or so6 -
FUUUUUCCCKKKK!!! I WASTED 2 WEEKS ON A PROJECT BECAUSE I COULDN'T GET THE RIGHT SPECS UNTIL THIS MORNING.......
I SPENT THE LAST 2 WEEKS BUILDING AND TRYING TO GET THINGS TO WORK THAT I DON'T NEED....2 -
So ironically after posting this rant this morning: https://devrant.com/rants/2376420/...
I came into work to an all hands meeting. Same situation that happened a year ago today is happening again with my current (now former) job. Being laid off effective immediately due to lack of funds.
FML.8 -
Today was my 3rd day on the job and half way through it (right after my new laptop landed on my desk) I was fired. I tried to work for two days without a computer. All I could do was hover over the one other developer whose been there 3 weeks and who didn't meet the launch deadline. The founder had a meltdown over it this morning.10
-
When you have important not work related appointment, can't work late, suddenly tricky show stopper bug shows up, you have to do dirty hack in fifteen minutes, push to master, run out of work and hope it compiles and works and will be ready for deployement in the morning.2
-
#cursee&productivity
It's not a good start for today. I'm sipping my breakfast coffee at my house at 10:13. I just couldn't drag my ass out of bed this morning. I turn off all my alarms and just stayed under the blanket. Winter is my enemy.
Hope I will work with good focus later when I get to office. -
It’s always hard for me to get up and start coding each morning, but once I do I always feel good about the work I’m doing.1
-
Almost 2 years working at this small IT company that has 7 developers and I just had my first small-talk conversation with the lead senior developer that was not related to work.
Maybe I'm in the minority, but I like to be able to chat to my colleagues instead of just saying "Good morning" and "See you tomorrow" and discussing my tasks. In any case, I'll go get a coffee and get back to coding.1 -
Emailed my PM a new project spec, the next morning he emails me back saying, to stop wasting time and get back to "real" work.
A few days later we had a Skype meeting with senior management and the PM who rejected the spec to go over that same spec document among other projects, everyone agrees it's a good idea including the PM :D
FML.1 -
Dear devs: Is 8:06am here and I didn't sleep cause I was updating some firmwares.
I think I'm blind.
Good night! I mean, good morning! -
I work remotely from the rest of my team and I just came back from a 1 week vacation. Logged in this morning and no one else was online...
My first thought was WTF happened... did something blow up do bad they all gelot fired???
Turns out today is a holiday for them. So now I've a whole day of peace and quiet to figure out what the hell in supposed to be doing again. -
Went to work pretty excited this morning, and found out that my neural network that has been training all weekend was still dumb as fuck...
No need to fear artificial intelligence (at least not mine) -
Things I get paid for but shouldn't:
Yesterday afternoon with an extra half hour staying late trying to work out why my code doesn't do what I think it should be doing.
Things I don't get paid for but should:
The 5 minutes in the shower this morning when I worked out what I'd fucked up.1 -
It's rather surreal to go from months of momentum, hard work, feeling proud of everything we're doing... to walking into work one day and finding out that it's your last. It's everyone's last.
Startups, I get it. They come and go, but I've never been so blindsided by it when everything seemed great and everyone was proud. Oh well.
Not skipping a beat. My first day at a new opportunity begins in the morning. I hope it isn't too long before I once again find that place where I'm doing my best work, building something I genuinely believe in, and feel great about it all.
I can't say how rare that groove actually is. I hope it isn't. We should all be able to find it. -
When you are absolutely in love and beyond proud of some new UI (or any piece of work) you've finished... then one morning you wake up and are absolutely disgusted with it. 😑2
-
Got through an entire day at work with just a "good morning" and "have a good weekend". Team was focused today - it was a good day!
-
Working on a Xamarin (.Net) project in the morning, in the evening I work on React Native project. And a little time at night with Java side project, also sometimes I do some support to a native Android App.
God, this is like a brain gym ! -
Started work at 05:00 to catch a flight, just finished work now (20:00)
Tomorrow morning i have to be up at 03:30 to catch a flight back, my boss has also booked me in with a all day meeting with our largest client tomorrow so won't be leaving the office until 18:00.
Atleast im going to the midnight viewing of Capt. America tomorrow (if I'm awake)3 -
I hate leaving work late, stuck on a bug and 10 miles down the road heading home, figure out a solution and then argue with myself do I go back and fix it now with no distractions or write it down ... then in the morning I’ll do it but bear with distractions... or not write it down .. hope I remember and then do it in the morning
But I’ll probably get distracted.: forget .. then remember after everyone leaves and implement it tomorrow night .. lol3 -
Write code. Write tests. Everything passes and you go home happy. Come to work next morning, run tests again just to be sure. Everything fails.1
-
What your boss is really saying when you're about to leave work and he says "get this done before tomorrow morning"
-
In Morning: Let's remove this bug.
*after some time*
"Ok!!! I would solve this at night time."
Night: leave it! Let's work on another project. -
How to deal with a boss who wants you to work overtime for free?
Me rightnow: Working overtime for free on a sunday morning 😂32 -
when i said "can i resume my work at home?" it means "can i go home now and let me sleep? i have worked since morning until now (almost morning again) and you my dear PM stop watching youtube and start to feel my pain".
-
Mornings. Not just the run of the mill “I’m not a morning person” but I legitimately would be more productive if I could work night shift. It’s easier to think at night, and easier to sleep during the day. Not just a night owl, but it’s hard to breathe laying down at night sometimes. Sometimes I randomly can’t sleep. I’ve never had this trouble during the day during the occasions I get to sleep for long periods during the day. The morning is prime sleeping time IMO. Not wanting to wake up is one reason, but the changing weather helps and it just feels right.
I also don’t feel awake til the afternoon usually. Even if I get enough sleep and coffee. Code churns slow in the a.m.
I dream of night time being work time with long, restful naps durning the day. I feel more creative at night, and it’s easier to focus. There’s less thought of “oh it’s a nice day I should do x”
Just sucks that it’s not largely accepted and there’s not enough other night hawks to hang out with on my off days. And my work won’t let me do such a schedule. Everyone is an insufferable morning person.
Early to bed early to rise is a load of shit. We should be allowed to sleep at times it makes us happy.3 -
Got added to a really exciting project in the morning by PMO, by the afternoon my manager had pulled me back to work on his boring project. Oh how the turns tables2
-
On Holiday break from work, and get a morning email to do some freelancing. Yeah, sure i !will do it today.
-
Am I the only one who's always scared out of my mind that there is gonna be some real hard ass purno blasting through my laptop speakers whenever I open it at work in the morning?8
-
Got my RC522 RFID reader for a school project last night, got it to work, tried to plug it into my breadboard this morning and shorted it... Double checked on 2 different arduinos and 1RPi 3 B didn't work on either one of them.
Fuck my life.1 -
Friday end of work - select shut down and update, thinking PC would do those things.
My morning so far:2 -
Spending all morning working on personal projects cause the work your boss gives you is bullshit lol1
-
Boss(at 5pm): Do you think we will have a full app by tomorrow morning
Me (in mind): we are all leaving office when do u think i will work on those features2 -
!dev
any career shifters?
have u guys felt every morning not excited going to work? like every single day, you lost your joy and everything in programming and thinking about shifting a career?6 -
Originally wanted to get a head start on work since gonna be out Monday... And don't want to be distracted while working on it... But UAT db was down.
So spent all morning working on side projects like a password manager because we're not allowed to use keepass...2 -
Super easy to get motivated to work on my own projects every Friday: I look back at how many and how difficult the things I worked on during the week. I take how much I got paid and divide it by the sum of (numProjects * difficulty(1 to 4)). If I spent anywhere near that number on just coffee this week, well then Friday afternoon goes towards working on my own projects (yeah Friday morning- still have a lot of work to do and coffee to drink.)1
-
So today morning I got a driver related BSOD after which during restart, my pc went into windows update. Everything was going fine when power failed and it shut off. Now I am stuck with this...
Good thing I have linux in dual boot so work is getting done. -
got my left bicep bone fractured from srm wrestling. dude just took my hand and half bicep bone away with him. what a happy new year 2024.
and just few hours ago, i was having death thoughts just because my parents were not allowing me to take car to work on a foggy morning.
karma can hit anytime. be humble.3 -
Friday: Expectations vs Reality
Expectation: Work on work for half the day then work on side projects for the rest of the day. Consider it a good day.
Reality: Work on work for whole day. Then have your boss set the expectation to have a project completed by Monday morning that you know will take 3 more days. Hence making you work the weekend to try to get it done in time. -.-4 -
I secretly hate customer support and I'm ashamed about that. I secretly hate my work every morning for a couple of hours just for that. Please, don't judge. I just had to say it somewhere :)4
-
funny thing about taking ritalin early in the morning, now I'm philosophysing on my way to work. today i was thinking about how thinking is a burden and i basically sold myself the idea of deontology6
-
So Alex, how excited are you for Google's hardware showcase today?
Well myself, I am waking up at 3 AM (Because got to love living in Australia wanting to watch over seas live streams!) to watch it, then I am going to work at 7 in the morning, I think that should answer your question!
Book a ticket people because the hype train is about to leave the station!8 -
Client: Thank you for this and all your hard work we will review and get back to you EOP Friday before final submit.
Us: We have been working to a deadline and have actually finished early which meant that we would be able to submit on Friday, at the very least by the afternoon. One question...is this your time EOP Friday?
Client: Yes
Us: That'll be 2 in the morning here and a Saturday.2 -
I want to adopt this habit of coding one fundamental concept/tool/.. every day before/after work. I already started doing it and I've been coding sort algorithms. every morning since last week, in Java.
What do you guys think should go on the list of things to practice regularly ?4 -
Not sure it's so much about my vacation, but my boss' one. I look forward to uninterrupted days in the office where I can work without much small talk or having to explain my logic in great detail to a non-technical boss. So, when I heard he was away for a week, I thought, great, I'll have some time to focus...
Whoah there, not so fast. Turn up at work on Monday morning to find my boss online on Slack waiting to chat with me. He's on the other side of the world. It's the middle of the night for him. And he says I'm not allowed to work remotely... -
Made the mistake of restarting my pc at work this morning. Came up with configuring Windows, do not turn off.
30 minutes later, same message showing.
Despite message saying don't turn off, i had had enough and turned it off, think it would be completely broken.
Booted fine, no issues?!?! Thanks Microsoft.2 -
I had a nightmare this morning in which I had been working on a project for months without pushing my commits to the remote server. Then the office suddenly burned down and I had to tell my boss that months of work was lost because I was too lazy to push. He was sooo mad. 😬1
-
Friday, forced deploy day for last & current months work. Been stockpiled due to holiday.
Yesterday boss demoed the product to clients so they expect to test today.
Early o'fuck this morning, a coworker managed to drop all secrets and env vars from CI pipelines and trigger a deploy leaving production broken...
It's gonna be a long and busy Friday... -
If you’re struggling with productivity:
[1] Wake up early & Exercise
Waking up early means getting most of the work done as soon as you start your day. This sets a routine for you.
Doing a high-intensity workout early in the morning can kill laziness and make you feel productive.
[2] Divide the day into three parts
Do the most work in the morning hours i.e 6 am to 11 am.
Keep the 12 pm - 3 pm for work that requires less energy. Evenings can be utilised to finish minor tasks.
[3] Make a timetable
A proper timetable or To-Do is a good way to keep a track of your daily routine.
Tick off the work you've completed and you'll feel you've been productive.
[4] Follow people who motivate you to work
If you waste time scrolling on social media, make sure to follow people who instantly motivate you to work and take action.
[5] Update or shift workspace
Your workspace is where you spend most of your time, so make sure it makes you feel motivated to work.
In case you are bored of your workspace, shift it to a new room, preferably that has windows for fresh air.10 -
One week ago I've made a work plane to divide features development day by day, obviously procrastinating
This morning I realized the project release was today
I made an entire mobile app with a plethora of features without bugs in an afternoon.
Never worked so hard in a so limited time without problems.
Loved it.1 -
OK so I have this joke its not fine tuned yet but I'm gonna try it anyway, tell me what you think:
If I ever buy a sex robot I would get 2, male and female, that way I can turn them on before I leave for work in the morning and by the time I get home they would both be exponentially better.3 -
How about being laid off over a 5min video call one morning when you completely didn’t suspect it? 😅 At least that taught me a valuable lesson about all these fuckin companies early on in my tech career! Watch me never prioritize their bs over work/life balance haha
-
Alright, so, let's say you're me. 16 years old, just started a summer job at a networking company. It's me and three others, and the people who hired us, quite frankly, aren't as prepared as they should be. So we get our first task at around 4, are told it's meant to last the week, and go home. Get back in the morning, find out someone did all the work overnight6
-
Friday: I have done a lot of work this week... Should take rest in the weekend
Saturday: Who needs rest? Let's learn new hobbies, watch movies, play games and have fun🤩
Sunday: I think I will take some rest today...But that series is so cool...
Monday Morning: Why did not I take sufficient rest the whole weekend 🥱🤦🏽♂️
Monday Afternoon: Slept for two hours in the office time😑2 -
We all have height adjustable table at work. So we decided to raise a coworkers table, and install an airhorn under the table to go off as soon he would lower the table. Lets just say he did need coffee that morning!
-
Started work in the morning, after a couple of hours was 90% done and would be clicking the checkbox on trello that task is completed.
Lol.
Found a bug.
OK, debugging time.
Spend an hour on trying to fix the simplest bug ever,( php was creating a file that had the contents but the wrong name)
At this point I was starting to get super pissed of cuz in 30min I need to go meet up with some friends.
LOL ok, fuck this shit, I don't want to do this anymore.
Made the bug into a feature that now you can have multiple authority(admin) accounts.
My teamm8 was like lol ok, we didint really need this but it will be useful so nice job.
👏GREAT MORNING:))))1 -
Get to work, reboot your machine to try to fix VS throwing way too many exceptions...get locked out of the computer cause keyboard stoped being recognized...Go to IT...now the mouse is not being recognized either...Well, this morning is just going downhill...
-
MFW I accidentally ran "rm -rf /" on my work PC last week. This is what happens when I skip my morning coffee.3
-
Stayed up until 2am launching a website for a client. Now I’m up too early in the morning and can’t sleep anymore. I feel like shit. I’m too old for late night work.3
-
To all the freelancers, are you able to wake up in the early cold morning to work? i find it really difficult12
-
Almost at the end of every day i say that im going to quit this company because of this lot of shit and me not being able to work with those conditions .. The day after i just go to work in the morning and say it's going to be fine ...
I feel like this is killing me .. Am i the only one with this situation ?2 -
There are 43 people in our team. Every 43 of them come to salute me in the morning, fuck off, let me work. Just go ahead with your shit but leave me alone.4
-
I think instead of being lazy today and sleeping in until 3, I'm gonna spend my Sunday morning early afternoon learning something new or building something short and sweet. Not sure what I wanna go after though! I started getting into openCV but I'm not good enough quite yet for it to be somewhat enjoyable. I am a swiss army knife so I work a lot of stuff but I'm open to anything.6
-
It feels like I cannot take it anymore, waking up to goto work at 9 feels unbearable for a hacker. My mind doesn't work and it's routine as fuck. How do you guys do it?4
-
OK I didn't make any New Year's resolutions, but now that I have to go to work again I wanna make one after all - my morning routine sucks. Do you guys have any strats?8
-
Trying to hack/block in app video ads for the last hour... Well that was a waste for time.... Now to get up now and goto work.
Hows ur morning?5 -
Ahhh... Waking up Monday morning.... To see a bunch of text messages... and new ones coming in every second... on my phone because another prod issue that was caused by a weekend release... That was supposed to fix a prod issue...
O well not my code, not my problem... It's nice I guess I'm getting less involved and sorta have my own domain of work. -
Am I the only one who feels like morning scrum meetings are a complete waste of time? At least in the way that my team does them. It's 30 minutes of "I did this thing yesterday, and I will continue to do that same thing today." All of this information can be sent in an email, but we insist on meeting every morning to say the same exact things.
For the past 3 weeks, the majority of the team has said the same exact things during scrum: "I continued to work on this big feature yesterday. Thank you." Like how does a detailed retelling of what this person did yesterday pertain to the rest of the team? It's just meeting for the sake of meeting, and talking for the sake of talking.
If you have this little technical issue that only pertains to work that this single person is doing, then meet with that person separately and discuss it. There's no reason to make everybody else sit and listen to information that will never be useful to them.
And most of the time, this scrum stems into spontaneous unplanned longer meetings afterwards. So suddenly this "quick" 30 minute scrum turns in 2-hours of meetings and a morning wasted on information that could've easily been discussed over email instead5 -
My last commit:
git commit -m "This better f*ing work or I will make everyone's life a living hell tomorrow morning... btw, I fixed the ie 10 display bug." -
So the company I work for assigned me to a new clients project and has already proven to be a pain.
I checked all my emails late Sunday evening and replied to them (saves me the time in the morning) so I emailed this new client who was enquiring when a part of his website was to be done.
Me: I fully expect this portion of the functionally to be done by the tail of the week.
Client first thing this morning: why isn’t anything working you said it would be done.
Me: ...4 -
when someone promises to complete a project over the weekend that will take several hours, and it's Sunday afternoon with no progress. if they don't do it then it'll be you having to do it scrambling Monday morning to complete for the client. why promise work over the weekend if you aren't going to do it!!!1
-
Spent a whole morning trying to make a unit test work only to find out it didn't work because of duplicated code.... Fml
-
Coworker during standup this morning: yeah i couldn't work saturday on the project because of VPN problems but i'll stay longer today.
Scrum master goes home.
Coworker, literally 8:10 hours later. Goes home.
He bugfixed another project for an hour and told me i had to work on this project instead of helping another client.
Meanwhile he's bragging about all the experience he has and telling he wants to be the lead dev.
I thought he started early but nope. First drank coffee for another 15 minutes.2 -
So macOS Sierra introduced the ability to sync sort-of important folders like 'Desktop' and 'Documents' between machines.
Nice idea until I forgot that the default of a lot of programs is to set up your project in the Documents folder, and that the project I was checking out from git had two 20G files. Okay, the machine I was working with at home had plenty of disk space.
Turns out my machine at work did not, and happily synced itself out of disk space, which has been causing all sorts of no-not-fun-at-all busy work this morning.1 -
I was a bit intimidated going into my first full time job since I was the youngest on the team. They put me on a small project to start with and it wasn't difficult at all.
After working with my colleague for a while, he came in one morning and asked what I'm doing here.
"I'm at work? I work here?", I replied in confusion.
Then he went on about that I shouldn't be working at this company. He thought I was smart enough to work overseas at an investment bank.
Thanks for the complement :) -
Is it just me and the computer I was assigned at work or high end workstations are just some overpriced piece of crap.
It is so slow when turning on that I almost forget why I did turn it on…
To add to the whole crappitude, the trashware has a magnetic hdd … I am not writing from the past, it was 2023 this morning…6 -
To my boss who thinks is ok to message somebody:
- On his/her day off
- On Saturday
- On a Sunday morning
Of course all was related to business as usual stuff no real emergency stuff nor that would have impacted anyone waiting till Monday morning.
Of course no overtime nor on call here and been blamed due my ‘flexible’ schedule (read arriving at 09:15 rather say 09:00) but of course out of office hours work or having to deal with hot projects no one was able to deliver does not count...
Talking of true leadership10 -
This morning, I realized that my most productive moments for work usually happen at home, working overtime. :/
-
My body decided to work against me
Last 3 days my “sleep schedule” has been “stay in bed with eyes closed until it’s morning without falling asleep”
If I go insane please tell my dog she was adopted. Ah… insanity is starting to kick in, next steps I’m defending pascal and managers…2 -

Good Morning! (it's morning here in my area) My coworker gave a good word today "Don't work for an arsehole until forgot to work for yourself" and "Working for a company who under appreciate you is like having sex with a zombie , the more you remain inside, the more part of your penis disappear"
hahahahaaha and today is his last day..6 -
Applied for a research intern, talked about their research and my current project for 10 minutes, then started a fucking coding interview, which I couldn’t solve cuz I’m dumb
But man, this is a research position, and our work were so close wtf?
Got rejection this morning, fuck the coding interview8 -
So this morning a guy asked me what my work was, I told him I'm a mobile developer, and what the work consists of
Then he came out with a:
"oh I heard that you developers write code, but which code? Something like Morse code or Braille?"
And i was like: "wtf, did he seriously said that?!"
So I jumped right in and replied
"No, actually I see pretty sharp"
... but I think he didn't get it ..uhh so sad :c -
I got a compulsory SAT/SUN reboot on my work pc this morning when I logged in.... after i just rebooted it... BTW today is Monday...
-
Just had a major breakthrough on a project for work today! The project has been going slowly the last couple months and the client actually sent a slightly concerned status request this morning, so being able to invite them to preview a fully working demo and let them know we’re starting to conduct QA testing tomorrow is quite a relief.1
-
I'm alone most of the day: my housemate is at work this morning, family scattered around the country, recently moved to a new town.
I had a great night last night and today is fantastic too. I'm not writing a single line of code today or doing anything but running a few laps later... maybe.
I don't even feel sad in the slightest.
Happy nondenominational festive period guys! -

So I work at a monitoring station (yeah not a professional dev yet), so basically our entire day is spent on the phone. Yesterday morning, our phone system broke. Everyone is getting calls from all departments. Even departments they're not in.
As if my job isn't stressful enough as it is, now this fucking thing happens, and whattya know, shit still isn't working today... -
Next job I find has to be entertaining somewhat. I thought I could deal with boring work but I'm tired of it.I It's just so damn boring. I'm not even writing new code anymore, I'm just updating dependency versioning and restructuring tests. It's bumming me out seriously. The mental fatigue from struggling to keep my eyes open every day leaves me struggling to get out of bed in the morning.6
-
This morning I wake up feeling stressed af and dreading going to work. I can't take it anymore. What should I do?3
-
Does anyone else run to their desk to just put their headphones/AirPods on?
…I’m not a morning person. -
So....
Another machine not working till morning.
That's what happens when the engineer knows a bit how to operate the machines but doesn't have a grasp on how cutting tools work...
Replacing 60€ tools every 4 hours that should last a week is not profitable.
When so many tools are spent that there's no more in stock.
Also manufactor has cutting parameters for a reason... Making the tools work 3 times faster or deeper does not mean profit, means damaged machines and tools.
As comparison, think over clocking a cpu to 7000hz and pushing it to the max 24h a day...5 -
Intern spent about a week trying to set up a local ruby on rails environment. Yeah, this is not really on topic, it wasn't that bad, but it's what comes to mind.
I don't know who modelled the databases I've had to work with these past months but god damn it no fucking normalization anywhere. Inconsistent data just cost me my morning.1 -
Monday morning
Get to work
Open email
Ci went crazy
Slack is on fire
Some npm modules deprecated approach
Rewrite docker files
Some other npm modules disappeared.
I hate you web technologies, I hate you developers who make releases Friday night.
I hate everything.
Ffs on the weekend just build Ikea fornitures instead of fiddling with my stack!
Sigh.2 -
Working on personal app project..got a feature idea... work all night to develop the feature, at morning I realized that feature is useless in my app ..Fuck that moment
-
Got a new work laptop yesterday. Set it up, updated it, and went to bed. I woke up this morning to it not accepting my password. I had to blow it away in recovery and delete my old keychain. Great start to the morning.
-
On Tuesday, I meet with a PM to go through priorities and set up a Trello list with task-specific cards (we live and die by Trello, it's not new to him). We determine that work on that list will begin first thing Thursday. PM calls me mid-morning Thursday and says, "just calling to see what you're working on."
-
Going to work more exhausted the monday morning than I was on friday evening is a REAL. FUCKING. PLEASURE.
-
Shower time the next morning.
If you're realizing you're stuck:
1. Get a complete thought out, even if it's shitty.
2. Quickly try use the code, even if it doesn't work that well
3. Move on to something else. If you can't, take a deep breath and phone a friend / mentor. Otherwise:
4. Read about the problem you're trying to solve
5. Go to bed
6. Think about it during shower time the next morning1 -
Walking to work this morning I was thinking that being a web developer has a lot of future because everything is and will be online... I sit on my desk at the office and there is no internet...oh well... :/3
-
Why that fucking guilt that shallowness that ass freaking short breath when I have said on Monday morning that I will arrive late by lunch to office , and that fucking too when I have a genuine fucking reason and work to do.
What fucking mind I have
Help me ranters -
"I go to work every morning with the possibility that I might learn something I don’t already know… You should look at every problem and think, ‘what can I learn by doing this?’ And if you think you can learn nothing, forget about doing it." - Milton Glaser

When I wake up from a full 7 hours of sleep, have Yerba mate ready to go, and have something mildly interesting to work on. Also bonus good mood if my wife and kid aren’t going to be home for the morning. Love seeing them, but hate hearing them while I try to work from home.2
-
So... I went to bed Thursday with a mild headache, which turned into a full migraine during the night.
Friday morning I couldn't even open my eyes. Had to stay in bed, sleeping through almost the entire day.
Saturday was slightly better, head still hurted enough to keep my bedridden.
Sunday I managed to leave the bed, eat something and wander around the house a bit. My wife and kids seemed a bit quiet and subdued but I was still to groggy to think anything of it.
This morning I wake up, feeling good enough to check the news and the work chat.
😱 WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED?!?
I'm out of it for a day or two and the entire country has gone into #coronavirus lockdown!1 -
In morning I thought to complete my work asap so I quickly went to office, started my laptop
....... after few mins it started.
I clicked on Android Studio Launcher......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... (after 15 mins) it started.
I clicked on the project to load..........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................gradle is building message................................................................................................................build.gradle message..................................................................................................................after 30 mins it loaded.
Finally I did some code, made some UI changes in layouts and clicked on RUN :(
............................................................................................................................................10 mins.......................................... another 10 mins.............................................................................................. after 28 mins it ran on my device. At this moment I couldn't think to start emulator..
In the end I couldn't complete my work.5 -
Have the technical defense of the practice project a company asked me to work on tomorrow, as part of the selection process.
Fingers crossed they don't realize I have no idea about Spring or webdev... I've already prepped a fair bit, and will a bit more in the morning before the call. Now, my bed is calling, so if you'll excuse me... -
Do you prefer / have quick or calm mornings?
I wake up at 8 am bike 15 min to work at 9 am, do school and personal stuff till 10 am and then start working.
It feels like I just have to take it easy at morning time because I have to also go to school in evenings after work.6 -
So here it is. Apple release, second round.
This time, uploads to AppStoreConnect took 3 hours and 40 minutes. Submission of the app was at 0.04, just after the planned launch day. Android submission tomorrow.
Tomorrow, and Friday are public holidays.
I'll have to work those, at best being able to not work on the weekend. The client has already told me he's calling me tomorrow morning to talk about things.
I don't want praise, but I'd like him to respect that while I may just be a lowly developer, I would like to have a life.
When are the happy times coming? -
Rough start to the morning. Working with a partner in a Power BI scenario. He uses forums, over research, to find how to map IP to latitude/longitude. Naturally our mangager wants this done as short as possible so I stay back a few hours and get it done.
Show him this morning all the effort I put in to get it to work... He denies it's good enough and proceeds to tell me 'his way' of getting a forum 'genius' is easier and will work better, and refuses to hand in what we have done... Help 😰 -
You work on your code in the evening..no errors...
Go present to friend/colleague/manager/client the following morning...
Your program throws out a bunch of errors..At that point you tell it, "why do you hate me!!??" -
Logged in this morning and looked at my calendar and our boss put two weeks of Out-of-Office on his calendar (starting day before yesterday when he was clearly in). He didn't mention this at all at the standup meeting yesterday. He already took a week off earlier this year, at the beginning of the current craziness, to work on his house, but at least he told us about that before he did it.2
-
I think I must work with the healthiest development team ever. Brought in timbits this morning (donut holes), 3 hrs later only 3 are gone.... The ones I ate....2
-
"Google driver not working"-QA tester. First thing in the morning, i read and i was laughing like hell. From where can i get google driver and ask him to work😂😂
-
Me yesterday: "I have too much projects... maybe I should shelve some..."
My head this morning: "I have this splendid new idea for you to work on"2 -
When you spend 3 or 4 hours working on a large PBI on Friday and you go into work early AF (6:30am) on Monday so you can finish before the end of the sprint on Tuesday, but they tell you in the morning stand up that the PBI will be abandoned.

Programming at a job to me is no longer creating something fun and valuable; it's more like figuring out why shit doesn't work, con-stant-ly.
It' s like coming in to your desk every morning, dreading the day because there's yesterday's shit to fix. "Hmm, what shall today be like? Oh yes, troubleshooting why my database model doesn't work, redesign it completely and break my mind over db details. The next day? Having to redesign my classes to implement new patterns because apparently the current design isn't good enough." Even if you work on new deliverables, that's just new problems in disguise anyway.
Pleasant? Not really.
lol.3 -
I just experienced a new level of wut at my job. Web Engineering has a Google group email. This morning someone at work sent us an email about canceling a work order (and he didn’t know how to cancel it)…for a plumbing issue 😑Wrong engineering department, my dude. And you can cancel your work order by going to the request system where you submitted it or the email receipt of you request, which was certainly not to this Google group email. You have the work order number, so you must have an email somewhere about your request. And how’d he get this email?? I’m seriously wondering if this is a weird phishing attempt.2

I work at a school. I saw a kid walking in my building whistling pumped up kicks the other day. Felt a lil bit uneasy to tell ye the truth. Said good morning to him and nodded in approaval to the song. Just to be on his good side in case he goes batshit crazy. Still uneasy.
-
I'll stay later at work to get something working/finished rather than save it for the morning because there is no greater feeling like coming into work and your code works great. What a feeling.

!dev and on behalf of some non-it related members of my family.
how hard is it to create some ms teams accounts for students? (cloud, there is no on-prem, i presume)
the school in question has roughly 300 students (well.. in germany..).
with a proper grade of automation, this can be solved, or am I wrong about this one here?
the student in question, my cousins wee one, received login credentials, that just don't fkn work.
the first remote class session is planned for tomorrow morning@0900.
my guess would be, that the admin(-team; i hope..) will have some fun tomorrow morning, because he isn't the only one, where those fkn credentials do not work.3 -
Yeah, it's Friday morning and guess what I left my laptop work yesterday and who just got a text saying that the server is on their ass.. yeah you are right ME. And my team who can do the same job as me on restarting the application don't ever take action on this kind of thing... Well I hope they will in a few weeks because I will be gone then2

Waking up in the morning.
It's been since 1998 that I wake up in the morning for school and then work and I am not used to it. -
Last day of a two week verification, I went to delete a duplicate folder. Instead I deleted the production folder. Never work on Allegra and zirtec. Luckily it was early in the morning and we only list about an hours work, from the day before's backup.

Pomodoro technique but with 52min stretches and 15 min breaks.
For avoiding procrastination: create 2 Todo lists every day before leaving work, one for small tasks to be done first thing in the morning and others throughout the day.1 -
So I have spent the entire morning trying to fix null values in the database, because they keep fucking up my code.
I hate the fucking person who made the database at the place I work, dude has not heard of a thing called NOT NULL!!! -

Question from a student:
I like automating stuff w programming.
For example some of my projects are:
- a script that takes Reddit posts, reads them w TTS, and posts it to YouTube
- a script that downloads a YouTube video and then posts it on tiktok
- a script that automates some of the internship application process
- a script that sends my boss a “good morning” message through slack every morning
Is there a job field with work like this? Like automating the combination of different technologies? I’ve been looking forever but I haven’t really found anything related. Thanks!4 -
I haven't had a lot. But I recently had a dream that our site went down due to this extremely weird, rare bug. So I was at the office tell 4am the next morning. Not that weird.... Except I went into work the next day and wouldn't you know it, the site crashed and I didn't leave until almost midnight trying to fix it.
-
I work on a larger team where we do continuous integration so there is a high probability people will be working on the same files for different features. As a result, one of the best feelings is grabbing the latest files and not having to diff first thing in the morning.

Good morning devRant community, so currently im on my early morning commute to College, and it got me thinking.
So I’m very passionate about programming but i also love playing around with the Stock Markets, Are there Software Engineering positions which work with the markets? I’ve been thinking its called a “Quant” but im not too sure, Also does anyone have any possible experience within the field? What it takes to get in etc?.
I highly appreciate it! Hope you have an amazing day/night. :-)10 -
I wrote a bash script to launch 7 terminal windows, to be run when I am about to start work(need them for git on 7 projects in my work) in the morning.
Then, I added the script to my .bashrc.1 -
yup! your usual monday morning full of stress, where you drive to work early and know your timeline is messed up1

So, I broke the lab environment friday afternoon. My boss said no to worry about it until this morning. Today he sends out an email saying we need the lab for a demo today. It is a good thing i only broke one of the labs...the lab only I am using. So now im sitting here waiting fir the lab to be fixed because I cant work without it.

Second day at my new work when I got notified that my actual working time schedule is not what I have signed for (working in a BPO company, recruiter and HR made a mistake not notifying me about the time schedule update during Job offer, if only I knew it from the start i would definitely not gonna pick this job coz I have other job offers with much more desirable schedule or at least the same morning sched that i want). New required schedule is 3 hours later than my morning schedule, that makes my work starts at the afternoon. I don't want that kind of schedule coz I don't want to go home late given that I'm commuting from work and because of other extra curricular activities outside work.
I feel bad now ☹️2 -
When a co worker pretends to work all day by "fixing" something that you've already fixed. Just so that they have something to talk about at stand up in the morning.
Git commit -nothing 🙄 -
I'm on call, and someone was performing scheduled gateway work at 3am, and forgot to set alert silences...
At least I got to have a nice morning to myself. And a lightning storm to boot! -
goddamnshitmotherfuckingshit wtf brain? why do all the examples just work, but my code looking similar just doesn´t. why the fuck is this basic thumbsucking baby topic of a scrollable canvas screwing me over since this morning?2
-
Have been on holiday for 2 weeks now, starting to get to the point where I can’t even sleep anymore because all I can think about is projects I want to start or other things I want/need to do. To the point where I’m typing this at 3 in the morning instead of sleeping.
Even starting to get anxious to get back to work...
Feel like such a workaholic right now. -
I have nothing to rant about today :D.
I'm too happy for anything to bring me down,
PM said i only have to demo tomorrow morning.
A nice 2 hours before work ends,
I'm hyped up on redbull and wifi is'nt bad today.
My sub-conscience whispering in the back of my mind: "Don't believe it. Don't give in to the happiness. Something will happen. You setting yourself up. Quit while you're ahead."2 -

This morning a coworker comes to me and has been like "I've been compiling this list of all the files on our network that have x in the title for a week now"
I'm like do you want me to use a recursive Powershell script to get you that list in like 10 minutes.
The little things that make you invaluable at work because you are the sole tech guy. -
!rant - Thanks to whoever it was who reminded me of the DevRant Spotify Playlist. I had some epic tuneage to start work with this morning. I'm loving some Black Stone Cherry (I don't have to wait for them to come on Planet Rock). (Also, Grammarly recognised the word 'Tuneage'.6

Mondays aren't the best time for me.
If it is a lazy weekend, this is the routine:
Sleep most of the morning in, wake up - do things, 10PM, think of some code to work on. 11PM, yeah, enough energy now - lets code! -
Good Morning Hustlers !!!
hope you all are enjoying your work life, so can you guys guide me as I am going to take admission in college and I want to learn a lot of things but kinda confused, can you guys suggest to me how to start my career in BTech and what skills should I focus on.5 -
Working from home stupidities...
It's last day before the weekend and I still felt like the weekend is already here. Totally forgot to start off for work while watching web series in the morning. -
That moment when you get to work in the morning, realize that you can't connect to the network, plug in a monitor and keyboard to the server, only to find that my goddamn dhcpd went missing for some reason..

The ransomware which has been affecting many places over the weekend is named perfectly for how I feel going into work this morning after being away for a week training wannacry.
