Ah finally, the moment when being a web developer is full of joy.
☑️ Server-side rendering
☑️ Inline critical css
☑️ Add progressive image loading
☑️ Minify everything
☑️ Automate release process in CI
☑️ Lint everything
Now that the strucutre is up, time to code the actual website. This is gonna be good!8 -

Then you explain him that those content are downloaded, so having a slow connection means that content will load slowly.

Well, this is a rant about devRant! Sorry.
I like devRant, especially when my internet connection is fast. But when it is not, it is very annoying to wait for a rant to load whenever I click [read more]. I found myself skipping interesting rants that I want to read just coz I don't wanna be waiting doing nothing during the loading screen!
Suggestions for how to improve this:
- Just like facebook and devRant web app, Increase the limit of the text that loaded when loading the rants feed. Not all of it has to be visible in the feed, but when clicking read more, show the rest so I can continue reading the rant while the comments are loaded.
- If not, then like youtube, load the whole rant first from the server when clicking read more before loading the comments.
- (Even for short rants) when clicking on a rant, show the loaded text while fetching the rest of the rant. This way I can at least click the rant, and continue reading till the rest of it (or comments) is loaded.6 -

Working on a module in an old shitty system. It takes 150 seconds to boot the fucker for debugging, which gives me one minute of debugging before the inevitable crash. Four minutes of debugging costs me 10 minutes of watching the loading splash screen.

Yet another funny bug for your iPhone friends. Oh Apple...

Microsoft should start to hire some real web developers, because their websites keep being awful.
Slow data loading, inconsistent UI and UX, just a pain in the ass to use.3 -
Mixing lazy loading with event-based code == events won't be handled because the class won't subscribe to events until it's initialized hours after startup
Thank you, my dear lazy-loading lover, who keeps introducing hard-to-spot bugs everywhere. I wish your hand was as lazy as your code, that would have saved hours of debugging time. -
Much obliged if you stop reloading the folder and searching it every five fucking seconds you fucking cunts.
Good god damn this fucking 'feature' of windows 10 grinds my fucking gears. I hit 'x' to stop seeing the visual distraction of the fucking green loading bar when the folders already loaded. Same thing with music. All I want it to do is open and play my fucking song.
Does it do that?
No instead it spends precious cycles updating fucking indexes or sprinkling crack rocks on the corpse of my cpu or whatever cycle fairies at fucking microsoft programmed it to do while wasting my fucking time.

Because I mean, why the hell would I want a progress indicator while the form is loading?
Actually, let's just not disable the form while it's loading. Let the user get mad when it's data's overwritten.
And best of all. Let's use inconsistent naming and fucking metadata tables so that we don't have any structure and make queries slow.
Yes. I fucking love incompetent consultants. Fucking love them. Good thing he never got hired...2 -
Still can't stream videos absolutely smooth on Fedora. Tried Chromium, Firefox and every fckin' plug-in they keep asking for. Half the stuff either just keeps loading or buffering. -
Can somebody please explain to my boss that using a progressive loading bar when you've got no metrics to base the progression on is stupid. Pls.3
-
One thing that’s a shocker and frankly very weird for people who have always used Android, is that iPhone doesn’t show any progress notif for anything whatsoever. Like dude.. I want things to happen in background and see progress in notif bar. But no, not in iPhone. You either wait for things to finish in foreground or do it explicitly inside the relevant app.
For example, when you want to send a big video on WhatsApp via Photos, you have to wait on the Photos screen until it’s sent otherwise it fucking fails. Like dude.. wtf?! Why can’t that happen in background?
On top of this, things that can happen in background have so limited processing power to themselves (because iPhone doesn’t like things happening in background; we have already established that though) that they just crawl until done and sometimes fail.
Another thing is that there are no fucking loading indicators. You touch something and then the guessing games starts whether you touched it correctly or not. Like dude.. I know your phone got a superfast processor but sometimes things take time to happen. You gotta give some kind of indication that things are happening ffs!
I know security and all, but dude you gotta give me something! Don’t make me suffer for little things.
Dude.. fuck you!6 -
If I was doing push-ups during Visual Studio's loading times, I wouldn't be able to walk through doors with those arms after one fucking week.1

To all of you:
Nobody enjoys loading screens. Just because the UI reacts on things, doesn't mean that the actual job gets fucking done.
So instead of using some shitty progressbar you copied from a dev who copied it from a 90's textbook, show some cat images.
The fucking internet is full of it and if your shitty Hello World app that is wasting 300MB of my RAM is dieing in the middle of some loading process, you could at least ease my pain.
Please. Show cat images instead of a progressbar. Thank you ❤️8 -
Spent 4 hours trying to figure out why my expressjs application wasn't working in my environment but DevOps loads it just fine. Turns out there's a difference between ^ and ~ on dependency version requirements. I was loading latest versions of nunjucks and NodeJs instead of stable.

Dear Game-Devs,
if your game takes some time to load that's fine but please do NOT let me press a button after starting the game and THEN start loading the menu for some time and instead load the menu immediately! Just had my reasoning for not doing technical projects for interviews proven.
Pass the first 2 stages of interview (including showing some personal portfolio projects) then after a week of hearing nothing get sent a technical project to complete.
Spend every spare moment for a week polishing this thing, decent front end, quick and efficient back end, low traffic between fe, be, persistence etc.
Submit the code at midday ready for the interview the following day, only for the company to phone at 5pm and say all is fine and the code is great for the final interview (walkthrough) the next day, then phone 5:10pm phone and pull the position.
That company has just had free work done which should have cost 1 weeks worth of fees, using the premise of a job at the end of it, only to take the code that they are super happy with and run with no payout.10 -

So I was studying the Material Design skeleton component

you know, like when YouTube shows grey boxes while the content is loading to let the reader know that there will be something there at some point.
But I keep waiting for it to load! My brain just assumes that the content is not ready yet so I wait but I'm the one who put it there in the first place! I'm supposed to be the one manipulating the user with intuitive UI, not the UI manipulating me!2 -
The main difference between chrome and Safari is an ideological one. When I'm about to watch a movie and have my all dark themed screen at full brightness, chrome can blink a white screen right in my eyes as it was loading its stupid start page.

Revision 2: Compiles same image into a 24MB file in 5 seconds.
Revision 3: Compiles into a 16MB image in 4 seconds.
It's not much but it's a start :-D
(Still haven't built a loading system so who knows if it works yet ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)3 -
This is why code reviews are important.
Instead of loading a relevant dataset from the database once, the developer was querying the database for every field, every time the method interacted with it.
What should have been one call for 200k records ended up as 50+ calls for 200k records for every one of 300+ users.
The whole production application server was locked.2 -
Is it just me or is there a serious problem with devRant not loading more rants once you reach the bottom2

My phone died today...
I was following up on a production ramp-up... Open one of our tracking dashboards through corporate VPN and while loading... It crashed...
Reboot after non-stop reboot... Cleared cache, factory reset... Stabilized for an hour or two and it's crashing again...
I give up... Rest now my friend... You did good, you did good!1 -

For the last year I and my team have worked hard decreasing loading times on our products as we have been nagged and nagged about making everything load as fast as possible. Now we have been told to make things load slower or add a pause for a few seconds once loading has gotten to the end...

@DevRantDevs could you please add the feature that i can view an image dorectly from the thread wothout loading the rant?
Is maybe someone else interested in this feature?6 -
when the website is so huge and a bug is causing every to be delayed a minute before loading, the debugger isn't showing anything, and the project lead's best solution is to throw more RAM at it

TIL that rants not loading when there's no internet is not a bug but a feature. A friend was going through the phone, and I don't keep mobile data, so he wasn't able know about the wk13 rants. Which is good because that would have destroyed him.

Our Entreprise CMS at work (obviously):
- inconsistent UI : check (misplaced buttons, some pages are more developed than others)
- slow: check (average 6 seconds of waiting, with cache)
- loading screen as page transitions covering the whole page, making it impossible to click somewhere else if mistaken, adding +3 seconds to loading : check
- time-based session, inlined in HTML and wildly disconnects you, making you lose all changes : check
- sometimes objects are inaccessible and can't do anything about it : check
- "delete" button next to "edit", delete is bigger and I have already clicked the delete button by accident : check
- can't have local development environment, need to work with integrated editor which has no helping features: check
- first TTFB: adds +2-6 seconds to loading time
TL;DR : a pleasant, developer-friendly, frustration- and rantless CMS to work with, reliable and fast. -
Checking Swift UI, first thoughts: goodbye Xcode freezing from storyboard loading ....
Sadly yes that's what I like about using Swift UI 😂😂😂
Oh and that binding, finally apple showed some love 😒 -
Why is it that one loading screen/bar is so taunting... but several on various devices, simultaneously puts my mind at ease?
...or is it just me?
I don't mean the ominous, never fully complete, rotating circle shit... that's annoying with 1 instance and exponentially worse in multiples.
Seriously, those circle indicators (several varieties) genuinely make me want to... do things that shouldn't be mentioned cuz that'd solidify the case of premeditated.
I also enjoy my servers' preboot output, mass linux updates and generally any script output dialogs... it's like confirmation that everything is doing/where as it should.5 -
RavenDB was by far the worst document storage "solution" I have ever had the displeasure of working with.
- Loading data crashed the service.
- Queries crashed the service.
- Monitoring applications crashed the service.
- It didn't support clustering or HA of any kind.
- Sometimes it just worked for no good reason.
- Often it broke for completely random reasons.11 -
MacOs Mojave for the (now old) MacBook Air summed up:
all loading times from before + random(0.5, 3) seconds -
I've noticed loading half of a small dataset twice is faster than loading the full small dataset once from files around half a terabyte.
Any tips?11 -

I wrote a simple Python script to split a Wikipedia page into manageable chunks. But it took a while to load, so I decided to add a loading indicator. Just a few dots appearing and disappearing. How hard could it be?
"Okay, so I just need a few dots as a loading thing."
"Right, so I suppose I'll need a separate thread for this... Better look up Python's threading again"
"So the thread is working, but it keeps printing it out on separate lines"
"Right, that should fix it ... nope."
"I should probably fix the horrible mess here"
"Hmm... maybe if I replace the weird print() calls with all those extra parameters with sys.stdout.write()..."
"Right, that kind of works, but now there's just a permanent row of dots"
"Okay, that's fixed... Ish."
Well, it works now, but there's a weird mess of two \r's and a somewhat odd loop. Oh, and there's more code for the loading indicator than for the actual functionality. This is CLI by the way.7 -
Is anyone else having troubles loading github ?

One easy way to watch YouTube without ads on a smartphone is Firefox + Ad.blocker
HoWeVeR... Page loading time on YouTube went up to 1 minute for me lately, all out of a sudden. Nothing changed on my device. I have auto-updates disabled
A coincidence? 🤔 Or Google looking to make life hard for me. YouTube was already caught making loading slow on FireFox deliberately, so they deserve 0️⃣ trust5 -

The last ten days i’ve been working on some animations for this website. Basic stuff but when you make elements move on scroll, people go wild.
The designer had a big opinion on this ofcourse.
So big she hád to scroll through the page herself.
So, multiple times a day, for the past two weeks she came over, checked animations, and gave a bit feedback on what could be improved.
She never mentioned the labels that where only appearing on scroll. Everything was just fine after 9 days.
However on day #10 i got a bug that the labels had to be appearing “just after loading the page”.
Like what?! Are people to dumb to scroll 2mm on a page? Damn ho. Wtf do you mean with “just after loading the page”. 1sec? 2sec? 10sec?1 -
if I could use the time I spend on the Windows loading screen actually programming, I might actually be a productive employee.

rant & question
What am I supposed to do to finally get log4j working?? It just doesn't want to log in my project. Or it simply hates me. However many tutorials and documentation I've followed, even copy pasting simplest examples with ConsoleAppendet, setting the xml config to classpath.
It starts with default fallback logging.
How do all the tutorials automagically work??1 -
My Instagram feed wasn't loading up, neither was the profile. I thought my app was acting up and neglected it. Apparently both FB and Instagram are down for some users around the world. Sad.
Now, even my WhatsApp is unable to send across images.

I love you sooo much Microsoft! Your goddamn Office download page won't stop re-loading. For fucks sake, get your shit together.
Someone messed with something they shouldn't, but I have no idea what it could be.
And no, I'll not try open it on IE.3 -
Is it just me or is devrant resetting its views on android as soon as you leave the app?
Basically if you switch app and then back to devrant, youll see the home loading rants, instead of returning to the state you were in before. -
@dfox since I can't append images in Feedback, I'm letting you know through here. When the logo shows up for loading in profiles, if they aren't collapsed, it overlaps the rest of the profile. I think that the logo should be lowered to reflect the extended profile summary.1

Any Angular devs in the house?
Does anyone know how angular lazy loading and webpack are related specifically? Struggling to find a straight forward answer.1 -
This is the sequel to my previous rant, if you don't know about it, go check my profile.
So, for some reason, when I opened YouTube Vanced, I am trapped into a loop of loading animation. And I thought "Hmm... Maybe my Internet sucks, let's try again.".
Then I switched my Internet on and off, go back to YouTube Vanced, the same loading animation loop.
Then I do switching the Internet for about 30 minutes, go back to YouTube Vanced, no progression.
Then I thought "What about YouTube?", I open Youtube, and you know what, YouTube loads it PERFECTLY. The loading animation takes longer than usual, but at the end, it still loads my recommendation and anything!
I thought "Wait, do they have an update?", then I go to Vanced Manager, and no, there is no new update for both Vanced and Vanced microG. There is a new update for Vanced Manager, though.
I decided to report a bug, but then I realized that the problem I am facing is too ambiguous for the developer to fix, so I decided not to do it.
So yeah, now I am sticking with YouTube, since I cannot find a solution better than it, and if you ask me, YouTube Vanced is still trapped in the loading animation loop.3 -
It pisses me that firefox tab randomly doesn't stop loading even after the page finished loading all it stuffs.1

Installed Kali Linux alongside Arch Linux. Earlier I was using systemd boot manager. Now that I've installed Kali, grub was installed along with it. Now when I boot arch via grub it's not loading.

So I'm doing angular 2 and I've started to notice that the time it takes to setup my website with al it's dependencies is becoming quite long. I know that longer load times are expected the bigger the site gets, but this is getting ridiculous.
Are there any general methods to reduce load times?1 -
Why would smn want to use Angular for their project? Its a mess! Its bloated, abstracted, opinionated and so not dev friendly. Its been more than 2 weeks I have been working on AoT and Lazy loading. Dont even get me started on NgModule! Its irritatingly convoluted yet people seem to prefer it. Why? Am I the only one who thinks this way?!?5

I'm stuck on loading assemblies in a child appdomain with C#
Does anyone know a good book or site with fundamentals about assembly loading, appdomains? About how it works... I don't just want a solution to my problem only I also want to understand what's going on.
(Don't refer me to MSDN)1 -
It's just really unexpected for me, but I'm about to uninstall mx player. Font catch loading take toooo long and there is no way to solve it. Goodbye MX, you were a good player and you are not any more.7

Fuck Redux/ngrx. I'm done, I can't get my head around this ugly shit. All I wanted was to load/save api data in a clean way and display a loading indicator now and then. But definitely not multiplying my entire code base by 10. Actions, Reducers, Effects. What is this?! Fuck that rocket science.5

FUCKING CLOUDWATCH
I'm so close to a mental breakdown.
If I had a penny for every second wasted by its loading spinner, I could already sip cocktails on my own yacht.4 -
And I spent hours trying to see why my code won't fucking work, turns out chrome wasn't doing a very good job at loading my updated files until I cleared the cache1

By implementing proper eager loading in Eloquent, based on a sample request, I reduced it from 850 DB queries down to just 14 DB queries. So that's an increase in 98% performance?

Here is my GitHub repository where I demonstrated
1. Role Based Authentication with fake jwt and mocked backend.
2. Lazy loading and eager loading modules.
3. Data Resolvers.
4. A pretty good project structure.
Each different topic is implemented in a different branch. I just wanted to share it here.
I have also provided links to the online resources where I learned or practiced these things in Angular ( Check Readme file for more info) :)
Feel free to check.

I was filling a questionnaire through SAP Ariba ..
The loading time, the way you can upload files. The tree structure of the questionnaire, and their date picker. Everything is perfect no struggle with it at all.
PS: I spent about 2 hours filling it and I am not done yet! -
Your website is slow. Your icons don’t show immediately. Says one boss to the other. Meanwhile i’ve spend already days on this issue am aware of it since 12 motnhs. But hey, since it’s the boss, let me just check one more time and make sure this is more about someones internet connection then the loading speed of the website.

Why the fuck is it Impossible to get crisp font rendering on chrome (widows desktop), Firefox looks sooooo much more crispy... Get your shit together Google, also while your at it, catch up to Firefox with WebAssembly loading time.
And Firefox, it would be really nice if you could start supporting brotli compression... Just saying.2 -
Then I spent 2 days trying to make outlook 2010 work again on a user's desktop. Just to find out the "run in compatible mode" was on (even after removing the office completely from the reg manually)...
And I still don't know why the *%×& the compatible mode was preventing outlook from loading the user's profile 😣 -

Come on, Office. First you throw me out because my "cached credentials are expired" and disable saving. Sigh. OK, let's re-login. Now you show me neverending "Loading..." Instead of a login mask.
Ugh...
May I work on my document? PLEASE?
EDIT: I'm an idiot. Saving locally works. -
Can someone tell me why Desktop Epub Readers are so bad?
I'm trying out Kotobee reader and damn thing gets stuck loading for 10 minutes every time I either try to make it full screen or change the font size. I never had this issue with browser epub readers.2 -
Found out that i have amazon prime music with my account for free (i always thought it was £7.99 extra) So mow im going through down loading a load of music and remaking my playlists, in the end it will make me more productive so that's how im justifying it to myself :P

I can’t get enough of loading up my brain with some good lines of pure knowledge. Reading math professors works on graph theory gives me the kick to survive the frustration of being amidst a mass of golems, bashing their heads with ad hominem while being completely oblivious of the fact they’re stuck in the 70s in terms of technological standards.

Idea: On Devrant mobile the beginning loading screen should have the users icon. I feel this would be better over some random character that you would never know.2

I just finished replacing perl's builtin Storable with my own deranged take on it because I wanted to be more efficient about saving and loading snapshots of a VM to disk.
It was a resounding success, of course. But what am I doing with my life? -
FACEBOOK COMMON!
I get that they released the app because they had a deal with windows 10, but after so much time can't you at least improve it a tiny bit? Even with a webapp from messenger it works faster.

-.- why not keep the image url in a list for all the things?
loading 5m+ image is very crazy thing in website... -
Images are not loading! Not even if I open a rant. Profile pics also. I have to open the image itself to see it.
Bug?2 -
Does anyone else have problems with devRant? Whenever I exit a rant and go back to the 'main window', where the rants are supposed to be listed, I get an empty page (with the typical devRant background but without the loading animation). Rants won't load for me then.
Rants won't load for me except for the first time when I open the app. After I clicked on a rant and go back, it won't load.
Using a OnePlus 3 with Android 7.1.1, in case that matters. :)6 -
FFS if you're Ajaxing some shit onto your crappy webpage, show that it's loading.
Even just "Loading..." is better than making me click on a random piece of shit on the page because the thing I wanted to click jumped down the screen a nano-second before I clicked it because you Ajaxed some cookie warning/advert above it.
The Internet is becoming unusable.1 -
I'll need to do a survey on how different frontend frameworks support asynchrony, both in data and component loading.
I have a very powerful lazy loading primitive for React (https://github.com/lbfalvy/... ), but it's a bit broken so I'm rewriting it into a stateful TS class (because it would have to allocate a lot to be immutable and fast) and a React shim. I'm considering adapting it to other frameworks that struggle with code splitting or async data, or perhaps - like react - only ship a built-in solution that requires unrelated business logic to acknowledge the frontend framework.
Are you happy with the workflow of using asynchronously loaded data in your frontend framework of choice?1 -
Does anyone else get a buggy interaction with devRant where your phone's background becomes the loading screen of the app? Or is it just me and my buggy phone?

I hate when i change working code just to make it replace an input field on the page with a loading spinner effectively nullifying the value of the input and take 2 days to notice smh2

Imagine loading a shared CSS for your subdomain site from your main site via PHP over cURL and then embed it in a <style/> tag on every single damn request.

Was trying to figure out the seemingly unending line of scripts that call scripts scripts and I commented out the core functionality of a job in production. Stayed their for weeks. The script in question? Validates that correct data is loading from an etl job.

I really hate it when you are reading DevRant on a public wifi network, and the network decides to drop the "more rants" packet, that you are blocked from loading more rants. Why do most applications stop loading more pages after a single request times out, it's really annoying2

WiFi’s acting funny— certain websites are not loading. Probably some DNS resolution error. How do I fix this ?7

Since the new update I have many issues with loading oft rants.
When I click on a rant, the devRant Logo Smiley Shows up for several seconds, than it Just disappears. And then nothing Happens.
Have to Go Back again, and Back again and sometimes also Close the App before the rant is loading again.
Is it only me?7 -
Are there any .Net developer here?
Need help. Our application created in visual studio 2003 using .net framework 1.1 suddenly showing "Failed to load resources from file. Please check setup." error when loading a form using a dll, also created in .net framework 1.1. This is only on windows 10 build 1703. On older builds, it is working fine.
Thanks!3 -

Hmmm, I cant upload rant with image by Nougat. Ok, I gave permissions to local storage manually, but still I can see only spinning loading wheel and after few second it just disappear. Whyyyyyy?2

Why the fuck are native desktop applications so damn slow when it comes to displaying remote/web contents???
Steam, XBOX/Microsoft Store, Apple App Store/Music are just a few examples. Waiting 1-2 seconds to perform a search, list products, start video playback or just loading a few bytes of text.
Even Internet Explorer destroys them when it comes to loading and displaying data! I prefer every overloaded electron based app over these crutches.
But honestly, why is this?!5 -
In the Android app, when I scroll to the bottom of the first page, it shows the loading more for a second but then doesn't load more.
Is it just me?3 -
So In Domain Driven Design, it is okay to have methods in your domain class to load children (lists) on demand? Example: Your aggregate root is Person. Then a person has a list of books that they’ve read. Is it okay to load that list of books by using person.GetBooks(); instead of loading the books when the person is initialized?2

Illusion of interactivity: switching back to a tab with an open google document in google docs, I see a cursor, but it's not yet accepting input, only after I click anywhere inside the document. Might be due to lazy loading browsers tabs, but anyway this is irritating.1

Anyone have some good books or websites on different types of resource-fetching (lazy-loading, eager loading, explicit loading, etc...)? I'm refactoring an API wrapper and i cant seem to figure out what i want to do with the API... It's extremely slow and unreliable, however i have to use it.2
