Me: Yeah, I guess. Wait a second, it's also stuck. The whole thing is frozen as ice.
Windows: What about keyboard?
Me: I said, THE WHOLE FUCKING THING!

I started studying computer science 3 years ago as a challenge for myself, try something new, do something I knew absoluty nothing about.
I was always the girl who didn't know as much as the rest. I took longer than everyone else, made worse solutions. I always felt like a burden.
Yet today, for the first time, I really felt like a real developer at my last week of my summer job. Explaining a five year older collegue (with a lot more (web)dev experience) about design patterns, git, c++, and helping him to understand and use it properly.
Apparently I was smiling like an idiot because he asked me if I was making fun of him, while deep inside I was just so happy to be helpful.. 😊18 -

1. Do you know why my computer is so slow?
2. What cellphone do you recommend me to buy? (They always end up buying the cheapest)
3. What do you do at work? (Answer: "I create applications". Anything more complex than that is not going to be understood or they will loose interest)
4. Something is wrong with the: [TV, Cellphone, microwave, etc.]. Could you please take a look? (Believe or not, if something works with electricoty, my family thinks I can fix it).
5. Is it true that if I send this WhatsApp message to all my contacts I will have more options?
6. I need to build an application that (pretty much The Matrix), how much time do you need and how much would cost? Don't you dare to give me wrong numbers. (We have to see the future)
7. (Continuing the previous point, a non-technical client) I don't think that would take so much time/money. (Every time)
8. I want to use the latest Front-End frameworks. I want to see all those beautiful animations in my page and that it runs smoothly... I also need that it runs in IE 5.
9. So, you have been working in the back end? If you don't have a screen to show to the client is like you didn't do anything in this sprint.
10. Why haven't you built and million dollar application? Everybody is doing that right now....
Yep, those are only a few downsides of our profession if we count family, friends and even co-workers. But I can't imagine myself doing anything else.6 -
Front End programming is the worst of all worlds.
I am a Full Stack developer that during every interview says "i can do front end stuff if needed". Something gets lost in translation and becomes "I do only front end stuff".
I don't mind front end development, but i hate urgent nitpicking that happens every time. Everyone else on the team works by regular tasks and deliveries (sprints and release dates), but my work consists of being the brush of the creative mind of someone else, that could not figure out how to make a good design before sending it out to me.
I am not a designer, a designer job is a creative one, i am just a brush that the team uses to complain why this button looks wrong on this not designed platform.9 -
In retrospect, being open about autism in the workplace was a very bad decision.
My manager and CTO got to know about it and since that moment, every single thing I do has a different meaning to them.
All my technical decisions have to be validated by someone else, and my critique about how certain things are done is dismissed as if I were some kind of alien.
I really wonder when they're gonna ask me about their future or something.28 -

The amount of rants on here I see of 'Devs' complaining that other non-tech people aren't knowledgable/ can't understand 'simple' explanations / etc and are mean, or even cruel to those non-techy people is alarming.
Just because you've spent a lot of time on something youre interested in, doesn't mean:
A. Everyone else is interested in it.
B. Everyone knows everything about it.
These 'Devs' are the reason most Universities require mandatory social classes so they can make sure you can talk to people in a nice manner and get your point across.
Majority of the time I need to explain a concept I find simple or I know to someone, I try to find an analogy about something both parties know. I know that pulling the documentation information and giving to them will just result in more questions and they won't understand.
You just gotta know how to talk to people without getting angry at them for being who they are, human.
String TLDR = "Don't be a dick because someone doesn't know something you do"10 -

QA: When I open the app I get this strange error message that includes "No data connection could be established" near the start of it.
Me: I'll clean up how thats displayed, but the error means your phone doesn't have internet connection.
QA: No that can't be it, I do.
Me: You screenshot shows no WiFi or 3g / 4g symbols.
QA: No those are never there, please investigate.
Me: I have investigated and found that every other one of your screenshots had a WiFi or a 3g symbol. Example: <link>. Please check your connection and try again, i'll clean up the error display.
PM: Oh i've had an issue something like this before. We really need to show users an error screen. We can't just leave them on this screen with no error message at all.
Me: ... we have an error, thats what QA is complaining about, its not loading the text and displaying the error object.
Anyone else want to not pay attention and complain about something else that doesn't make sense? ... no? ... ok good, back to work then7 -
Yesterday I installed windows on the laptop of my parents. I thought no biggie I'm just going to do something else while it installs. AND THEN IT STARTS TALKING. WTF!!!
Also it said I can turn the voice of BUT THE FUCKING BUTTON DIDN'T WORK.
I hate windows.8 -
My parents think laptop is only for playing games.
I don't even have a game installed in my laptop.
They start telling me "stop playing, do something else" whenever I sit in front of laptop for more than 30 minutes.

Do something brainless.
Like taking a shit.
Showering.
Hear music loud and dance.
Talk to people but don't listen.
Surf in the internet.
Masturbation.
Sport.
Take a walk.
Watch TV.
Cook.
And so on and so on.
Most of them are doable for hobby projects at home. Some are also suitable for work. Choose appropriately.
But if I am stuck, then continueing to try solve the problem most often keeps me stuck. So doing something else is my solution. So far it worked well.10 -
@dfox and @trogus
I’m quite into lean development, sorry... “Lean Development” and I can’t help but notice your users are trying to tell you something by their actions.
I keep skimming past posts where a user is @‘ed in the main rant.
Then either themselves or someone else will @ those people in the first or second comment as @ing doesn’t work on the main body.
I understand you have your reasons but in the spirit of lean, MVP, build measure learn etc etc
Shouldn’t you accept the behaviour of least resistance and implement the functionality in the main rant body?
Because you’re not stopping anyone from @ing folk, you’re just making it more annoying to do so.
This meme says it all23 -
So, a friend of mine just called me and asked what is it that I do in programming, and if I knew Java, because her stepfather owns a company, and they're currently hiring. Since she's not a tech person, I answered "basically, websites", but the stepfather was asking something else in the background, and she couldn't understand what the heck he was saying, so she put me on the phone with him.
I then explained, I do all kinds of web related stuff, from simple HTML single page sites, to WordPress themes and whatever, so I know PHP, Javascript, and all that crap.
And then, he asks me this wonderful question:
"And programming languages... ?", as in "do you know any?"
... I was like... Wut?...
I mean, I see where he's coming from. He probably meant compiled languages or something, but still... I felt like screaming at him "WEB DEVELOPERS ARE REAL PROGRAMMERS AND DESERVE SOME LOVE TOO YOU KNOW?! 😢"
I decided to go with a "nah, not compiled languages, no..."19 -

!rant but nightly thoughts about wrecking clients that won't pay
If you're building something for a client for money, think of a killswitch.
If it requires internet anyway and you have a webserver, do something similar to what the killswitch of WannaCrypt was (but rather checking for a file on the webserver for existing/non-existing). If the client won't pay, kill the application. If the client pays, maybe even deliver a version without killswitch later (as a "bugfix")
If it is some offline project, you can check for a date (payment due date?) and also check for date/time manipulation on the system itself, and disable the killswitch via a "bugfix" version later just like above.
If clients pay, they don't have trouble. Else, they do.8 -
Oh my fucking god.
How can you, after 2 decades as a developer, still produce code to this very day that has that many warnings and suggestions that Visual Studio lights up like a bloody pinball machine from all the squiggly lines!?!
Take your craft seriously or find something else to do!9 -
found this in our codebase today
try {
//do something
} catch () {
try {
//do something else
} catch () {
try {
//do something else else... this goes on 4-5 levels deep
} catch () {
//log... couldn't do
}
}

Honestly, I have a love/hate relationship with coding. On one hand, I can feel on top of the world when something works the way I want it to. On the other hand, coding can make me feel more incompetent and depressed about my life than anything else. I would never want to do anything else with my life, but it's really tough when the thing you love is also the source of a lot of self-hate.1

This is a ways out because I can't find LED filaments thin enough to simulate this, but if/when I find them, how difficult would it be to program a controller to have them map my circulatory system, with them pulsing in time to my pulse? I want to do something cool with my arm, and this keeps coming into my head, but I'm freaking out over how difficult I'm thinking this is going to be.
Ideas? Either on how to do this, or what else I can (reasonably) do? Friends irl want a rocket punch, I want a flamethrower, but anything else?72 -
Do you ever open devRant, read a little, and then exit the app to find something else to do. Then open the app immediately again, because that's what you do when you want something to do?4

FUCK
Have you ever worked with people that constantly asks you what to do? People who are in the same spot as you, I mean.
- Hey, you should start debugging this while I finish this menu
+ So what's failing?
- I don't know man, but there's a bug
+ But where?
- You should look for it, I'm trying to link this to the controller
+ How can you not know?
- Do you know?
+ Where should I look for it? Here?

(One crappy solution after) + Here it is, I'm moving to something else

Hiring process is fucking broken ok?
We all do have something else to do, nobody wants to do "homework" for 4 fucking hours. Which let's be real, isn't 4 hours. It's always more. I try to squeeze it in a least amount of time which means mistakes will be made. I always try to show my knowledge of the language and it's features. But, you didn't do X. That's it, that is a no from us.
Dude, I just wrote a high production grade small project with 90%+ test coverage and you are telling me that those 2 small shit I made is a big deal? Fuck off
Most companies I worked with have a code full of shit and here I present to you, with a poetry and it's a no because of X?
My bet is that if I ever started to work there I would find a code that isn't tested and is in shit state

Do anyone else have major focus issues? When I'm enjoying something, I can focus completely for a long time. But when I'm miserable, 15 minutes seems to be the maximum I can focus.
It's really hard when you have long passages to read for class and are unable to focus long enough to actually absorb the material.
I really want to try ADHD medicine, but I don't want to rely on it to focus.8 -
Because MS is dropping support and updates for Windows 7, I finally decided to install something else! Wanted to do it earlier, but I was clearly to lazy to do it.
I choosed Ubuntu, I know a lot of you hate it, but it is the one i'm used to, and i didn't want to search too complicated25 -
I got a Job!
I was talking with my boss after my first week and a half of working. I tell him that I enjoy having an office and whatsoever, because that way work stays in work.
My boss tells me "Yeah, you have to do something else besides working, do something else with your life"
Damn, that's one conscious boss tbh. So happy to be working there, but you know, everyday the imposter syndrome kicks in...it sucks.2 -
Is this just me?
if(..... expression.....){
System.out.println("it works, calm down");
} else{
System.out.println("it's not fucking working, holy fucckk, fucking WORK");
}
Tell me if you do something similar.6 -
IntelliJ has this tutorial where it teaches you a bunch of shortcuts for making life easy, since version 2017.3 or something like that. Most of it is pretty meh, some of it is pretty useful. And I just came across a keybind to auto format code.
What else do I need. If I can quickly format my code and make it look pretty, that's all I'd want.
"Try reformatting the selected code with Ctrl+Alt+L"
*Linux Mint goes to lock screen*
*logs back in, code is unchanged*
Well played...6 -
Oy, can any of you chaps hack a facebook account?
Asking for a friend.
Seriously. This waste of oxygen said if I wasnt good enough, I should find someone else to do it.
God I hate humans. I'm converting to hinduism so I can get reincarnated as something else. A cat maybe.19 -
Don’t work from exact place you eat everyday or sleep or entertain.
If you can’t focus set timer from 15 minutes to 1 hour and do something else that is not engaging your brain the same way your work does.
Go for a walk.
Take a break from electronic devices.
Take a shower.
Take a nap.
Take a dump.
Make a list of things todo before you eat.
Make groceries.
Clean your house a little.
Make a laundry.
Any manual labor helps if you need brain muscles for thinking.7 -

Frack! I just found out I have to video record a friend's wedding. Why? Apparently because I'm a developer I suddenly know all things electronic and interacting with humans must be something I enjoy. I do not. Darn my wife and her persuasive sexual superpowers.
Me: "But...but...they are your friends, not mine."
Wife: "If you do this, someone else might have a good wedding night"
Me: *sigh* "What time do I need to be there?"
The family doesn't have much money and can't afford a professional videographer, so I understand (been there), but I'm probably going to have to smile, be nice and..ugh...socialize.5 -
You know what I always hated about Stack Overflow?
When a newbie asks a question and really wants to learn something they get downvoted for 'we're not your teacher. Go learn it somewhere else'
When someone else asks a question and just expects Stack Overflow to magically produce working code for him they also get downvoted for 'we're not a code generator'
When someone finally asks a 'good question' but mentions in the last line it's homework they also get downvoted for 'We won't do your homework'
They also don't tolerate fun or opinions.
I never actually participated in Stack Overflow because to me it felt that whatever I asked, it would get closed for god knows why. And when I actually answered questions, and wanted to help someone, I would get downvoted for 'don't make someone else homework' or 'don't waste your time if they're not willing to put effort in it'
I still always 'used' Stack Overflow but read-only thanks to Google.
Anyone else feels/felt the same way?7 -
ajax hell/dom hell
do you know it? no dont talk abut the callback hell.
i fcking hate it when i load any modern site, and it needs a few seconds to calc some stuff, xhr this, calc that, dom/css visible that. at all it takes more time specially if you on low end to mid equipmemt.
And then you think its finally loaded, you want to click or tab something and then another xhr was Finished, dom/css changed, and the button i was about to Click moved and i click something else.
friends of me hates this to.
so please dear webdevs, stop try to be cool and fancy just because you found out how "cool" conditions in css and dom is. stop using that bullshit angular (and so on) bullshit if you cant manage to pull out a html at start that will not changr its layout all the time after being loaded, ty.9 -

You can't call me a "nut job" on Lync then five minutes later dump your fucking work experience kid on me so that I can "tell him what to type" and "let him do some of the work". I'm a paid technical intern, not your fucking babysitter, so maybe you should pay your own kid attention rather than let somebody else to do it to make you feel superior.
You know fuck all and have needed my help numerous times, and been sheepish every time I've known something you don't. If I helped you with something, say thank you and don't act like my presence perpetually pisses you off. Sit down and show me some respect, as I always have to you, or I'll report you to HR for being a demeaning twat. Your call.
Or perhaps I could have a word with the new Director you've been arse-licking. I'm sure he'd love to hear that you have been treating like shit the one guy who can save you from the shit show of having no idea how to do the task you've been set.
I know I'm an intern but come on, I could take your job tomorrow if I didn't have a degree to go back to. If you keep being a shit to people then one day I will actually do it!5 -
Uggg..... I'm trying to encode a binary file in Python which may be an image or may be an executable, and then decode it back into a file (I plan on editing it in the middle, but baby steps for now..) but nothing is working!!
My plan is to:
Open binary file.
Decode as base64, or something else that could easily handle binary.
Convert byte data to string (for editory perpousos - I won't be editing bytes, I'll be doing custom encoding but that's irrelevant for this test)
Convert back to a byte string/array (with .encode(), probably)
Write to file.
I do this, yet the output has been altered... Though I haven't touched anything..
It's so enfuriating.. x.x18 -
I'm having quite a hard time.
For my studies, I'm doing some research minor atm. And it's basically a 10 hour a week job for me atm. I have literally nothing else to do. No I do not do side projects, I do not aim to be a developer in the future.
This is causing me to sleep about 12hrs each night until it's impossible for me to fall asleep again. I just do not see any point in getting up unless I actually have something planned (meeting bf/friend). It's gotten to the point where I've actually cancelled plans because they didn't give me enough motivation to get up.
Since this is my last year in college, I am also stressing out about what to do next year because I cannot think of anything I enjoy doing.
I am worried abiut my health at this point. Any tips?14 -
Anyone else really struggle with motivation?
Time was back when I was a fresh dev that I couldn’t stop coding, it’s all I ever wanted to do.
I think doing it for a job has sucked the fun out of it, and unless I’m getting paid (and even then), I find actually getting down to it is really difficult.
I’ll start looking into making something, perhaps get as far as opening the IDE and then just nope’ing and bingeing YouTube / gaming / Netflix instead.6 -
Is it just me or what. I had begun learning web development (but prefer C, shell scripting, Linux... ).
One thing that amazes me - besides having to learn 1356367626785576 technologies to get something done and the fact we get a fresh new amazing framework every 0.00000000000234 seconds - is CSS.
Amazing, I made a navigation bar where I wanted the items to be displayed in the horizontal position, so I
.navbar li, a {display:inline-block}
Works fine.
Next day I'm doing the same from scratch, doesn't fucking work. I look the previous design, HTML structure looks identical, I only use a different font face and colors.
After a while I randomly decided to put a <div> around the a element in order to do something else, update the page and... Voilá, text is in line.
Like... Wtf.
I'm like fuck it. No way I want to work with this shit, let's go back to shell.6 -
Ask yourself a couple of simple questions:
Do you like to code?
Do you like to learn new things and improve?
Do you like to solve problems and spend hours on a single detail until it finally works?
If your answers contain a "no", then development is probably not for you. You will hate it and you will suck at it. And you will make lifes of devs who actually love it miserable. So do something else.6 -
I was browsing through xkcd when I came across this comic. Then I realised that a line break after every sentence is actually what I do when writing something in LaTeX. It has no effect in the end but I feel like it makes the document clearer while working with it. Anyone else who does this? ^^'1
-
I've always thought the "can you hack my facebook accout?" rants a little exaggerated.
Then it happened to me twice.
For fuck's sake, is that damn social media site so ingrained in your puny little brain that you can't ask me something else? Is "what do you program" not the more obvious question?1 -
Sins? I don't want to keep you up all night, so here are some highlights.
Fucking with clients and employers who fuck with me first, or waste my time.
Occasionally not documenting my code (I'm actually pretty good about this), then bitching about poorly documented code.
Honestly wishing other people in the office would *actually* explode, or die engulfed in flames.
Working drunk and/or stoned.
Getting pissed off when I have to do something in a stupid way, or use a workflow that I don't like.
Seriously fucking up out of either arrogance or stupidity, then blaming it on something else.
Zoning out, skipping work, or sleeping in and billing for it (see sin #1).
But my greatest sin? That honor's got to go to becoming a developer in the first place.
I wasn't always a professional asshole, but I fucking am now.1 -
At work today I met an api that redefines http status codes to mean something else. Naturally this makes integrating between systems a whole thing when system a keeps spitting out 207 and system b will not accept anything other than 200. Thanks for nothing. WHY WOULD ANYONE EVER WANT TO DO THAT THO? there's just no good reason to.
Anyway hens how r yous?, hope you're all doing well and that your coffee is as strong and black as the void <36 -
TL;DR - Developers, do not buy HP Stream models laptop unless they are selling at $1.
Cannot even handle Sublime + Firefox + LAMP use case well. On lubuntu OS with literally nothing else on it. Sublime crashes every hour.
Now I am learning how to code using other tools before I can buy a better replacement for it. Failure with gedit; very slow and sluggish. Currently trying Geany.
It's a pain in the ass to learn new tool especially when you are so accustomed to something. 😣12 -
Worked as a student in a big company. Just doing data entry and checking product data. It was a nice part time job at the same time with computer science study. After a year I asked for something else and switched to the Android Team. I said I could do a little bit of Java and wrote for another half year Unit Tests. That was the point where I really learned coding and got experienced. Would never learned so much in my study because I was lazy. Now I can call me a Android Developer. Still love the company for giving me this opportunity.

My father doesn't know what I do.
He thinks that I'm just playing when I create a website or something else.
And that I need of a degree to be a developer6 -
Damn maintenance windows. I mean, I get that the SaaS product my boyfriend works on can't go out in the middle of the day. But he just spent weeks on a business trip, with an absolutely mad sleep schedule because he's redesigning their data center (or something. Don't ask me, it's a hardware problem...) and now he's finally coming home today and I'm super excited but all he's going to want to do this weekend is sleep. Even though I'd love to spend Sunday going to this yearly event, or finally getting another round of DnD in (everyone else in the group is available). But nope. Bloody all-hours work is taking away his (and thus my) weekend too.2

As someone deeply questioning their life and career choices as of now, I wouldn't want to become a dev anymore because:
- you spend most of your time burning your eyes on a monitor and getting terrible back pain
- you might sell your soul to company benefits whose only purpose is to make you distracted from the fact that you're basically spending 1/3 of the day wishing you were doing something you actually want to do
- might have to do some exhausting communication ooga boogas to understand what supervisors and your other colleagues want to say (in a small company setting)
- again, as in my previous rant, if you're not on some less disposable dev position, you could as well become something else given that junior salaries are not that high
- get into an unhealthy work world where little hours of sleep, overworking, and other such unhealthy lifestyles are praised or used to determine your worth
Of course, these differ on a case by case basis. I'd become a train driver or something if I still didn't have to eat and not throw more money at a career change
Life's tough2 -
When I worked in a non-dev env, the best part was that I was done with work after working hours. I didn't stress out or even think about the issues. It was something for tomorrow or someone else to worry about. And so, I was not mentally exhausted and stressed out all the damn time.
So, I shall try to bring that mentality to my dev life too. With this new position I'm starting soon, I really want to do well for at least a few years. And that would need me to chill the fuck out. Particularly after work.5 -
did you know, that in PHP, you can do:
if ( ! function_exists('function_name'))
{
function function_name()
{
//code of the function
}
}
which apparently means you can do
if($var == 'something'){
function functionName(){
//some code
}
} else if($var == 'something else'){
function functionName(){
//some completely different code
}
}
so now, apparently:
1. before this code executes, the function doesn't exist at all (okay, i can live with that)
2. after this code executes, any call to that function can result in any of those two completely different bodies of the same-name function executing, depending on what the $var was set at that time?
...so... now not only the same call to the same(name) function can do two completely different things, *but if you change the value of $var afterwards, you can't even properly find out which version of that function is in effect for the remainder of the run of the script*...?????
WHAT.
THE.
...i mean... I can't help but think that the idea of conditional function declaration like this is... kind of cool (have I been warped by JavaScript too much?), but at the same time... WHAT THE FUCK.18 -
Ok, time to eat some humble pie. I seem to remember ranting about the fact we were going to use an offshore dev house a while back, and I'd convinced myself they were going to be absolutely useless.
Far from it. It's certainly meant I've had something else to do in managing them, and I can't say everything has been completely rosy - but overall, they're a bunch of hard working, decent devs who write good, well-tested code, are receptive to feedback in code reviews and take the initiative and ask questions when they need to. Shame on me for initially thinking otherwise - I'll miss working with them when I leave this place.3 -
ComputerToucher: *opens Jira ticket* Dev team needs tokens for the APM for a new app with multiple tenants. Ezpz. Hey, developer. Do you want one golden token for all of your app tenants or would you like us to generate one token for each?
Developer: Let’s have a meeting to discuss it.
CT: It’s…an exceedingly simple question. One token or 4? Which does your app support?
Dev: Yeah I think we should discuss with this with the platform team, can you set up the call?
CT: (Internally) I am the platform team? Do you not know how your applica-never mind I’ll just ask the PM directly.
CT (in chat): I’ll ask PM to schedule the call.
*Goes back to Jira ticket, changes priority to 4, removes ticket from sprint entirely, picks something else to work on*6 -

PhD saga:
The applications have closed and yours truly shall await the results, which could come anytime in January or February.
And so I wait. I hate this limbo since there is nothing for me to do to impact the outcome. What's worse is that I am absolutely unmotivated to do anything else. Since this project is literally my dream, and despite how I'm trying to mentally prepare myself in case I don't get in, there's just something in my brain that goes like "nah. I just want this shiney thing. Just this and nothing else". So I don't even know what to do with myself.
*Sigh*5 -
Manager: Have you ever developed anything on Mac?
Me: Nope never even used one more than 5 minutes.
Manager: Mr Important Guy has a Mac and he needs to use one of our tools (which is very Windows specific).
Me: Tell him to use Windows like everyone else. We aren't going to support a single Mac user when the other 500 machines are Windows.
Manager: But he's important. Can we get him something with limited functionality?
Me: Fine but it will be *very* limited and buggy.
On a side note I hate Macs (only because I've never used them). I have to google how to do the most trivial of tasks.10 -
Things I’m learning from my accounting job that will help me in my future dev career:
Today I have really, truly understood the need to sometimes just walk away.
I couldn’t figure out how to fix something, I kept fucking up, and at 16:40 I realized I can just stop, do something else that’s easy and doable, and come back to the fucked up mess I made in the morning. We’ll see how it goes, but it’s a lesson I’ve been continuously learning over the last few years, not to stubbornly brute-force my way into doing something when I’m not in the right mindset and able to do it, and instead just calm myself down and come back to it later. -
Not gonna lie I have toxic people in my life and I have caught myself in multiple situations where I behaved differently, did or did not do something just because they were near.
Whenever these people are gone it’s just the most beautiful thing to be able to relax (also in my mind).
It’s crazy what other people do with us and how we can exaggerate all these feelings and emotions. The best thing I can do is to get rid of this toxicity in my life and move on.
Anybody else or is it just me?1 -
while reading rebecca & brain's book on object oriented software. I realised that the programmer is a special kind of person. the complexity he can handle, the struggle to implement a system, from input to output, satellite control, AI, robotics, heck, even the planning required for a simple android app, the complexity is overwhelming at first, then you get your jotter and break it down into parts, and you drive yourself to the edge of sanity figuring out an algorithm, then you go over that edge implementing it, but oh that great super hero feeling when you finally get something to work exactly as specified, I'm not sure people in other professions can understand the satisfaction. I'm very young in the whole programmer world, but I'm growing fast, I'm just really grateful programming found me, I mean, can you think of something else you'lld rather do? yeah, me neither.4
-
I hate when I'm getting in my flow and everything starts clicking, but I have to stop to go do something else. It sucks having something almost completely solved but not having enough time to finish it.1

Chat apps. What's the idea? Those are basically tools of violence. They give you a possibility to in real-time stop someones work and start demanding service. Now. Immediately.
Usually people send you first email and then they after 10 seconds chat "did you see my email?? read it! serve it! please me!" Usually it's just a small request to document something, review someone else's document. Do it ASAP. If you were coding something, then drop it and do someones job for them instead.
You got a request for me to create some verification case list? Put it into my backlog. I might start doing that in week or two. Or month. In case there's nothing else more important. Since I know that you are working with something that you think is the whole universe, but trust me, I got my own problems already.
But hey, if I don't reply to your chat in a minute, please feel free to walk behind me and start explaining your life. No need to wait even for me to get my headphones off. "Oh you are in conf call? Well, this is just a quick thing blaa blaa..."1 -
I'll give you a few reasons to walk away from a dev's chair:
1. if you want your life to be simple and not challenging, if you just want to go with the flow - choose something else. Dev's life will definitely bring some challenges to your day (and sometimes night, and sometimes - your weekends). Especially if you feel you are a perfectionist, dev life could turn your life into a living hell if not handled with care.
2. If you like to see people smiling, if you love that feeling when you help someone and that someone has a better day thanks to you - choose something else. 1st line SD would probably do, but the further from technology you go - the more smiles (and human faces overall) you'll see.
3. If you prefer person-to-person interaction over to talking to machines - definitely don't be a dev. Go to management, administration or smth else, but development. >90% of the human interaction in this field is arguments and conflicts; ~8% are requests for assistance, and the remaining 2% are shared by saying "hi" to the office administrator and your (semi|)annual reviews with your manager. Not kidding.
4. If you have a personality where you find it difficult to stand your ground and not budge to the pressure/blame game/your managers asking you to stay in late. Like it or not, it happens quite often. Many devs have spoiled the management by budging to their requests/demands to stay for OT/unpaid OT to "fix the mess they have made". That's a blame game right there. And these people stay in and do what the slaves do - work for free because they are yelled at. And then management sees this technique work and (ab|)uses it on other devs. If you can say NO and stick to it, prolly wave with some printed paragraphs of labour law in front that manager's nose - it won't be a problem. But if your consciousness is too troubling - stay away from this field of engineering.
5. If you want to easily "disconnect" from work and go do something else - dev's career might be a problem. Yes, your computer might be shut down/hibernated/suspended after 5pm until 9m the next morning, but your brain will most likely keep trying to solve the problems you were facing. You'll prolly use your own computer to do some research, check some forums, docs, etc. - this is all your free time, this is all your family time donated to your manager (and to your personal knowledge base). Not to mention, all these things you learn will soon enough become obsolete, as new technologies will replace them. So if you'd like to easily "disconnect" after 5pm, doing that as a dev might be too challenging.1 -
The reason I liked Captain Marvel, is because it wasn't about defeating something or someone. It was about remembering who you are, picking yourself up, and moving forward with what you've always wanted to do.
This is a similar situation with most designers and developers.
If you watch it again, notice that she was always falling hard. From riding a bike to completing an obstacle course, she would try something and fail.
But she kept trying.
After losing sight of her goals by being distracted and derailed by someone else with another agenda - she was slowly reminded of them, and eventually remembered what she forgot.
Then, not only was she was able to what she originally set out to do - but, ended up doing them better than she ever expected.
If that's not a great story for boys and girls to grow up with - and, for adults to learn from (including some of my peers) - I honestly don't know what is.2 -
I really feel the need to just blacklist the entire EU, to not deal with additional shit like gdpr, I do see its benefits, but I am already busy with getting my client approved by paywalls, other services and get all that bullshit integrated - I really don't need having to also shit out some very detailed statement about it all, if you want something like that, then create a generator that gives me all you want with couple clicks, else get fucked outta my sight.13

Does anyone else feel like HackerRank questions are trick questions?
Without a textfield to explain the answer It highly depends on how deeply you think about it..
Can you do x with technology y?
Yes.
Can you do x with technology y alone?
Well yeah but no, you still need something to process it. What does "alone" mean? Without electricity you sure can't do anything.
Extreme example but you get my point..6 -
So I am for sure not the best web developer but I have been working on a personal project for over a year now.
Teaching everything myself I somehow got to a pretty oldschool, stack I still use: PHP, HTML5, JS with Jquery, ...
Should I feel bad about that? I somehow can't bring myself to learning something else because at this time I can do everything I want to do with my simple setup. Am I missing out on something big?7 -
If I had to name one of my weaknesses it would definitely be impatience.
When I'm working on a backlog issue I want it to be done, finished, pronto. In the real world that's ofcourse not always the case, I can't disturb my colleagues with every question or ask for feedback every minute. I also hate it to have to wait for someone else to do something for me if it's blocking me, like when I need to fix something on a server but don't have access or when I somehow don't have permission for something and have to wait for someone to come and fix it. Even worse: Slow programs that fuck me up when I _just a second ago_ figured out how to fix a bug or implement something.
I also have to wait for pull request reviews so I usually end up with a bunch of stacked PRs that all feature small changes but are dependent upon each other because I needed a change for a different change, never more than 2-level stacks though!
Obviously it's a bit childish to lack professional patience, but it's definitely something that I wanted to rant about and think I should grow in. -
I'm amazed how some people either think I'm fucking jesus or a god or both.
App XY not working.
Yeah. We're talking about how App XY and it's exhaustion of the connection pool since a year....
It's not working, what can we do?
Well. I don't know. Tried restarting?
Not working.
Well... Nothing I can do, you're responsible for developing the app and we've talked many times how complex the problem is.
It's not working, can u do something?
<Me just fed up increasing the connection count>
Well. I've increased the connections.
This will not work. It's a band aid. The app needs really a complete migration.
Ok. But it works.
No it doesn't work.. For fucks sake... It still exhausts the connections for unknown reasons, this is a band aid.
But it works....
-.-
This conversations was over then....
Well. Have fun.
I reverted the change I did.
May this crappy piece of shit die a thousand deaths, I:m now working on something else.
Goodbye mother fucking bitches, habe fun with the nightmare you created.
I'll cry over the other fucking nightmares I at least can solve, cause what you created in this App is beyond irresponsible and dumb.4 -
What do you do when your redirect doesn’t go where you tell it?
Clearly I’m missing something.
I stepped through the code, following the failure path of Sheogorath’s Recaptcha. It fails as expected, and hits this redirect before doing anything else:
`return redirect_to new_user_session_path`
I verified that this redirects to the “/users/sign_in” path, and it returns so the server doesn’t even try to authenticate the user. It just nopes out as it should to prevent timing attacks.
But somehow instead of doing that and redirecting as it should, it signs the user in and redirects somewhere else entirely: the role select page, which only happens after authenticating an admin user. It never even hits my breakpoint after the recaptcha check! It never authenticates!
I think what I’m missing is my old reality where things made sense.3 -
We are a small company, and our CEO and CTO attends our daily standups(not sure why)
At the end our CTO, after a little discission with our PM, goes: “This” is more importent and should be gone first - its money to the company.
Pm: Fine but then “that” wont be worked on for now.
Cto: ohh okay, but “this” is really importent, so do it first.
Standup done, people returns to work.
1 minut later, Cto comes into the dev room.
Cto: “something else” is also really really importent.
Pm: ok, so then we do “something else” instead and we will put “this” on standby for now.
Cto: and remember “operation” has the highest priority of all.
For fuck sake... just pick one or decide what it is you want....
Cto has no clue to what he is doing. Does not have a long term plan, other then get money into the company based on really short term goals.
Easy to say im not his biggest fan, and I am a 100% sure he knows this.5 -
Me: *starts learning new tech stack*
Boss: you do this project right now(will have no relation with the tech stack I'm learning)
Me: boss you told me to learn something else
Boss: I need the project by this week.12 -
Ive been ranting a lot recently due to various tools and plugins not working as they should. lol.
At our company we where joking about how we should "fix" it, which was kinda blunt destroying it and picking something else to work with.
That gave me the little idea to make https://www.devhelpdesk.com/ which has various "topics" on how to do stuff.
Basically it is 100% satire.
If you like it, just check it out and use it ;). Ps I might be sort of buggy, Ive just build it in a few hours...1 -
What time do you get up on work days? I'm starting to think I should have me time in morning (reading, learning, coding my own things) before going to work.
I've think I've come the the conclusion that this job/team is sorta chaotic and tedious and there's no skill growth. Not learning anything new. Usually just something broken, integrate some new feature, build something that I've already built before but differently for this specific case. Nothing fun or challenging, or new.
And also tired of trying to be a "role model", make things right. I tend to like to keep things orderly, documented, well tested and clean but everyone else seems to just bulldoze their way to get whatever they need, leaving a mess behind... It's been like 2yrs already but the technical debt seems to be growing not shrinking...17 -
When you are involved in a conflict of interest project and its kept under wraps ...but your IT director still wants you to do it because his friend needs something done but don't want to pay for it
Who else has faced this? Or am I the only one...?3 -
Do you know guys why a programming bug is called so? It's because the very first time a software crashed it was because of a bug ( a real bug stuck in a bus on the machine!) That caused that 😂 imagine if something else was stuck instead! Like someone'sfinger : hey I fixed that finger but still got 2 critical fingers and 4 small ones7

Since I bought my laptop the screen was scaled to 125% (1080p display) so that it looks like a ~768p display.
I like it, it looks good, but now I'm trying it at 100% scaling (15" screen).
Yes, everything looks so small now, and my eyes cried for the first 10 minutes, but I'm starting to like it.
Do you have any similar experience? What do you prefer, 100%, 125% or something else? Why?16 -
Just had to debug a piece of code for the 5th time today and I'm starting to lose my mind. Why do programmers insist on using single-letter variable names?! Is it really that hard to come up with something more descriptive? I mean, I get it, "x" is easy to type, but so is "counter" or "iterations". Does anyone else feel like they're just constantly fighting a losing battle against the entropy of poorly written code?22
-
This is going to sound like a ridiculous question, but how do you all find both the time and the interest to work on side projects for your portfolio / GitHub? I always seem to start strong, get burned out, and can never find the inspiration to break away from the 9-5 of my day role to work on coding something else... Where do you find ideas? Designs? Concepts? Interesting solutions? I'm in desperate need of building some GitHub repos for my portfolio... 😅😰7
-
So today I started working on a code base someone else wrote and stubled across this and thought it was worth sharing.
Why somebody would be doing something like this is beyond my understanding.
Not commenting on the empty catch block keep in mind the whole snippet has nothing to do with rest of the code...
WHY!!!!!?!?!?!?!13 -
Which phones do you recommend?
Which have given you the fewest problems?
I want something with custom rom support so i can add my own problems (duh) and to make it prettier. Apart from that, the only other deal breakers are a lack of wireless charging (I have children who break everything) and an awful screen. I'm not really picky about anything else, but I do want it pretty.
Anyone have a phone like this that they actually like?17 -
Anyone else ever had to install Jekyll on Windows?
Man, what a displeasure the last four hours were. SSL errors everywhere because Ruby versions have differing SSL certificates for downloading gems or something, having to install the devkit three times, messing with Linux Subsystem and finding out the Ubuntu repos do not have a new enough Ruby version to support what you're doing.
All this to have some fun with GH pages. It's physically exhausting.2 -
Okay after reviewing all my options. There are fucking no resources I can use to teach myself ASP.NET (Core). The official docs don’t give information as to how or why you should do something, and everything else is either not the same version or there’s differences in the versions project files such as Startup.cs just as an example. So it’s very confusing to follow along with tutorials or whatever it is because I don’t know what the differences do because backend is still really new to me. And I want to know what all is happening and why.
It’s nothing against ASP.NET, ASP.NET Core just the tutorials and resources and documentation for it. Although I’m open to recommendations.37 -
At work one morning, I was asked in chat for a way to edit an xml file on a Mac. They couldn't open it due to permissions. I told them to open Terminal and run sudo vi /path/to/file.xml. Never got a message back about it, so I assumed everything was OK. Later that afternoon, I received another question: "I'm in, I've made the changes, now what? How do I get out?" It wasn't funny until I realized how many memes existed for this. I'd imagined they'd quickly opened and edited it and spent hours unable to exit it; though, realistically, it probably wasn't attempted until the afternoon. Truthfully, I was new to it, too, and have no idea why I suggested vi over something else.

WHAT THE FUCKING SHIT DO YOU WANT FROM ME??! I LITERALLY GET SPAM MAILS EVERY 5 MINUTES (i know I know, some of you get more than that) ABOUT BITCOIN. I NEVER DID ANYTHING FUCKING RELATED TO CRYPTO CURRENCY! HOW DO YOU KNOW MY EMAIL?? LIKE WTF. I'm sitting here doing my stuff and every few minutes my phone starts ringing and I'm like "hey maybe person x answered or something else important happened" but when I actually look at it to see whats up it's just a fucking email about bitcoin being outdated and it tells me to maybe invest into other crypto currencies. After actually reading one of the spam mails because I was interested in what they actually want from me I had to find out that they do not even mention any other currency or website. WTF INTERNET?? WHAT DO YOU WANT?2

If the client wants too increase the scope or change requirements, that's fine but put the difficult decision in their hands.
Do you want to delay delivery or drop something else. -
I'm looking at someone's shit code... and I have to remind myself... we all have the ability to be fucking stupid, especially when we're trying to do something in order to do something else so that we can do something else.
note to self: "always remember, they did the best they could with the resources they had at the time".
But that doesn't change the fact that I need to clean up the crap they left behind.5 -
She : Bring the stars for me.
He : Are you mad? How can i even do that? Impossible, ask something else.
She : Stop writing Codes.
He : Ok, How many stars you need? -
Not really a rant but more of a fact kinda thing. Noticed a post earlier about someone ranting about why they code figured I'd do the same...
I code not because I wanted to for say but because my after my uncle's death I needed something that I could feel in complete control of. Coding gave me that ability to control the computer however I want and tell it to do whatever however. At the same time it taught me so much more about myself and the people around me in the process. Today I don't code because I need to control something m today I do it because I can't live with out. It forces me to think critically of everything and everyone. It forces me to learn something new everyday and every night. It requires me to solve complex problems with limited solutions. It allows me to create solutions when everything else has failed and it gives me a drive to complete things. It's the reason I live technology and it's the reason I have the job I do. It's the reason my boss loves my work and it's the reason other people on my team envy me. Code transformed my life into what it is today. And it will forever be my greatest peice of education.1 -

I don't know about you, but a double-digit percentage of my swearing aloud while using a computer takes place when a site uses its javascript bullshit to grab my keypresses, so that when I hit the slash key to search the text of the page(something I do A LOT), it instead moves my focus to their own search field, where I will be halfway through typing before I see that the hijacking has taken place. Today I wondered if this was annoying to anyone else, and found that yes, yes it is. Maybe it annoys you too, so here.

Timesheets were made so that managers can be little dickbags and make a big fuss over the half an hour doing something that someone else asked you to do, instead of something they wanted you to do.
Its also a good way to force employees to become their own managers when you arn't giving them work, so you can have more time to sip tea while they scramble to find out how the fuck they will get their hours for this week with no direction being given -
That moment you're coworkers are going to continue at home after because the project is fun, and you're like.. I'm going to game tonight and feel a bit ashamed because you like to do something else than work4

So I kinda started a project just a week or two ago, essentially a CSV to spreadsheet converter that could also do formatting, so you wouldn't have to do all the formatting after you convert it to a spreadsheet. But now I just kinda think that it's not a very good idea and I'd just be wasting my time with it.
I was in the middle of looking through some of the source for LibreOffice to kinda understand how the files are converted and everything. But now I think I would be using my time better doing something else. Oh well.2 -
Anyone else here that, if working on a challenging problem, just needs silence (rather than music or background noise?) Seems to be an increasingly rare thing, especially with younger folk.
If I'm just doing boilerplate coding / something not too challenging I can work with whatever. If I really need to think however - I do that way better with no auditory distraction.8 -
Deciding whether to stick to being a web developer, or switch to something else
(thinking more like rocket software, or something with security (but maybe sticking with web), or some other cool sh#t
I don't know yet, what I do know is even when I'm creating an erp system, I find it very unsatisfying
"I helped create the software on that rocket"
Or
"that hospital uses the system I've helped to create"
Sounds a lot more satisfying than,
"that company uses my 'warehouse resources manager'/'webshop'/'planning system'
But then again I don't know, I now have a stable job, know what to do and know the language we use.1 -
I think I may have officially gotten myself fired before I even started a new job. My salaried start date was supposed to be Jan 3 but they hired me to do spot work at my hourly rate until then. My server side PHP skills were never great but they appear to be completely inadequate to the task of patching their undocumented, spaghetti legacy code. I just sent a note basically saying I either need to convert their entire site to something else 3 weeks ahead of the timeframe we planned or to basically outsource my work to another developer to patch this code. Feeling like a total imposter at the moment. I wouldn't hire me.4

My mom is a basic user that needs to use only basic apps to chat and speak with family, post photos and play one or two games.
She is always ranting about how difficult is to do simple things. And she is mostly right.
Like, where are my fucking photos gone?
Why is facebook/whasapp/whatever different today, where are the fucking buttons gone?
what the fuck happened (when while clicking something a update windows popup and you click something else). Why the buttons are so small (when you want to close a fucking ad windows with a little invisible fucking "x" somewhere and you click the ad instead)?
I don't want no fucking cookies.
Why after windows update my fucking game doesn't work anymore. Why I can't hear anything through the fucking skype?
The fact that she knows I'm one of the moron who builds kind of not-usable and buggy fucking things, doesn't help.2 -
I work remotely from the rest of my team and I just came back from a 1 week vacation. Logged in this morning and no one else was online...
My first thought was WTF happened... did something blow up do bad they all gelot fired???
Turns out today is a holiday for them. So now I've a whole day of peace and quiet to figure out what the hell in supposed to be doing again. -
I spent the whole day on git conflicts, I know it happens sometimes. But I do feel like a slow programmer, the boss even said so by comparing me to someone who has 15 years experience by saying I produce less lines of code than than him ( I have 5 years of experience).
So everyday, I have this nagging thoughts; "you are too slow, you can't even program, what are you doing, do something else this isn't for you etc" .
And then when I solve the problem "You are the best, you know everything etc"
A constant battle between self-destructive and positive thoughts.10 -
I have an old manager that I worked with at an old job that got me shit canned for a failed web sockets implementation. He works at a new company and wants to talk.
What should I do?
A) I don’t trust this fucker. Ignore him.
B) Forgive and forget and try to get the job?
C) Something else.
D) SWAT the motherfucker.7 -
Had to do a change tonight - not once but twice my server secure login account was locked. And server security don't answer their pages. I couldn't even reverse my changes if my changes break something else.
My account has not been locked in over a year but happens twice in a 90 minute window. What are the chances? -

is it just me or are others also noticing that our society is getting similar to the one seen in Idiocracy [the movie]?
I mean... I'd understand one or two dumb things: people do it, realize how stupid it is and move on. But now it's more like the other way around: people do something smart, realize it, undo it and move on.
Has anyone else seen Idiocracy?21 -
Just wish I could swap a portion of my dev super powers for something more f’king practical like being able to do DIY or mix cement and lay bricks properly.
Every damn time there’s some small job to be done it turns into a god damn nightmare.
Anyone else as single skilled as me or can you actually do real world skills too?9 -
This is about both worst boss and most annoying co-worker.
Well, this boss didn't care how much code we wrote, or how good it was (well, at least he didn't care that much); only how much commits we do. And this coworker literally did a script to do a commit every 10 minutes. 24/7. Everyone else was completely mad about it and about a week later we achieved that he was kicked from the job. Since then I still get trauma if someone commits something unimportant.9 -
Damn i want to make an Alarm to alert me when Gradle is finished building.
When waiting gradle build i always get mad because sometime i always left it to do something else and then forgot about it and ended up coming back with more wasted time.6 -
Quick and probably duplicate.
One fucking more time someone comes to me and interrupts me, I swear if it's not important, or chitchat, or something easly googlable, or something you could ask literally anyone else or something that isn't even my shit to handle, I will give the unlucky bastard 30 minute lesson to not fucking interrupt me when Im trying to focus first half of fucking day to do one fucking thing.
What the fuck.
What, should I print big fucking A2 formated poster and stick next to my workstation "If you came here to interrupt me, think if you really need to"?

And no, I dont know where the fuck is your excel file.
And no, I dont give a shit when Im coding that there is cake avail for workers today.
And no, for fucks sakes I dont have time for chitchat, I have deadline on me once again and Im doing something I dont have much expirience in so please leave me fucking alone.7 -
Just found this on Reddit
"I used to think that everybody should learn programming. When I first started learning –thinking about how to organize the world in terms of data structures and algorithms– I thought, "Wow, this is such an amazing way to organize information. Everybody should learn to do this!"
I don't think that anymore.
I think there has to be something seriously wrong with you in order to do this work. A normal person, once they’ve looked into the abyss, will say, “I’m done. This is stupid. I’m going to do something else.” But not us, ‘cause there’s something really wrong with us."

Met one of my friends after almost three months. (He was out on vacation)
We randomly start talking about life and what we aspire to be.
He's doing Business Management Studies, so naturally, he wants to be some sort of manager.
He then asks about me. I tell him how I'm learning and aspiring to be a Web dev and do a little bit of ML on the side.
And following conversation ensues:
Him- Dude, what's the use of learning web development? Anyone can make a website today. Haven't you seen those ads?
Me- *Knowing he's talking about WIX* Yeah I've seen em. But it mostly generates dumb templates. If you need something custom, you gotta take help from a professional.
Him - Nah dude, you can get custom made stuff from them too. Web developers will soon lose their jobs. Learn something else.
Me - *Trying to control the urge to punch, I tried to explain that a website is more than HTML and CSS*
He - *Doesn't want to understand what I'm saying and says I should do something else, since automation will take away developer jobs *
WHAT THE FLYING SPAGHETTI FUCK!?
Why don't these people FUCKING UNDERSTAND (even after telling again and again) that there's more to a website THAN JUST FUCKING STATIC TEMPLATES
EAT SHIT AND DIE YOU FUCKING BASTARDS
And what's with claiming to know more about someone's profession than the person himself who's spending his days and nights dealing with problems your fucking zombie brains can't even fathom.
This was literally the third guy I met this month who said something similar. Are these people so common now?2 -
Programming excel macros is the worst thing one could do to himself. VBA is the most cancerous anderen inconsistent language I had the "pleasure" to work with. I have problems like the following all the time for no apparent reason. For example: you script something, test is and everything is working just fine and dandy. Next day when you run the script, guess what...i doesnt work anymore. For no apparent reason what so ever. Maybe its just me, but i just want to hang myself working with it.
Anyone else has had such "Love story" like mine?6 -
Anyone else here hardly code in their free time? I'm a professional developer yes but I tend to leave work at work. Maybe if I found something fun to work on with others... Or a personal project I really wanted to do for me.3

Everyday strugle.
Go to work, go home all motivated like: oh once I'm home I can do this and that to finish my work, and it's fun and interesting. Or I vould study, or clean up, I'm totally gonna do something usefull!
*once home*
Ohhhh look league of legends! Or bed! I'm too exhausted to do anything usefull. Better chill.
...
Anyone else?
Anyone got advice for how to combat this? T_T5 -

There are two weeks left until the PhD application results are published. But I'm having such awful nervous breakdowns. I don't even know, if it's anxiety or if I'm literally dying inside from something else. From an almost-heart-attack today when I got a trivial and unrelated bad-news email, to keep having weird dreams about things like end of the world and post-apocalyptic life, or being jumpy all the time.
... And it's not like it's life or death, I know that. I know that I can do other things if this doesn't stick. I know things will workout the way they should; I know all of those. But there's just something destroying my physical and mental health right now, and I don't even know if it's just the anxiety for the next big step in my career, or something else, or how I should deal with it.
... Anyways, amannoyed.7 -

I need to study.
I want to study.
But I can't.
I am 16 year old and I am in school. When I'm not studying for tests, I am programming something. I'm not finding time to do anything else. Just getting stressed.
Anyone in here started coding early too?
How do you separate time for school and for coding?8 -

Anyone else like... REALLY bad at algorithms and logic stuff?
I just hate them so much.
Tell me to build something and gg done. But all these tests for jobs freak me out.
Like. It probably ends up being something simple and when it's explained I know what to do but at first I just instantly shut down and can't think.5 -
Whatever the task needs.
New paradigm? Probably a book first approach.
Library/API: their own suggested tutorials and references cause that shit moves quick.
If I have to read a cave painting to understand an ancient card punch language I’ll happily do it.

What browsers do you guys use? After allthe controversy with firefox lately, I want to switch to something else.32

Getting ready to start working a little something something on the side. Client (read as uncle-in-law) wants it in Wordpress because he
1) has heard of it
2) can buy themes. I told him I can make it look any way he wants and use something else, something that I'm actually familiar with. He wants Wordpress. At least it looks like writing my own plugins to do stuff will be really easy.5 -
Rock, meet hard place. I’m losing my employment again. I’m tired of web development, which I’ve never been super great at, and want to switch to something else. But how do I do that and what do I switch to if this is what I’ve been doing for over 20 years and I have to get a new job soon without time or money to get a whole new education and career path? Getting older also means this old dog is having a harder time learning new tricks. Wish I could just retire early.2

I'm a C++/Obj-C programmer finding it ludicrously hard to switch to Swift.
I find that the constant ability (leading to very poor programmer code) to reduce syntax and add tokens reduces readability and nowhere is this more apparent that with closures.
I'm working through (to my shame) Ray Wenderlich's Swift course and the closure chapter has this:
PS I loathe K&R as much as I do Swift so it's all in Allman formatting for clarity.
let multiply: (Int, Int) -> Int =
{
(a: Int, b: Int) -> Int in
// do Something else
return a * b
}
Why oh why isn't this more simply and elegantly written as:
let multiply = (a: Int, b: Int) -> Int
{
// do Something else
return a * b
}
The equals sign shows clearly that it's a closure definition assignment, as does the starting 'let'. But this way all of the stupid excesses, like the 'in' keyword, the repetition of the params / return type only this time with useful labels and additional tokens are removed and it looks and reads much more like a regular function and certainly a lot more clearly.
Now I know that with the stupid ability of Swift you can reduce all this down to return $0 * $1, but the point I'm making is that a) that's not as clear and more importantly b) if this closure does something more than just one line of code, then all that complicated stuff - hinted to by the comment '// do Something else' means you can't reduce it to stupid tokens.
So, when you have a clousure that has a lot of stuff going on and you can't reduce it to stupid minimalism, then why isn't is formatted and syntactically better like the suggestion above?
I've mentioned this on the Swift.org (and got banned for criticising Swift) but the suggestions they came up with were 'use type inference' to remove the first set of params / return type and token.
But that still means the param list and return type are NOT on the same line as the declaration and you still need the stupid 'in' keyword!5 -
I finally found something to rant about! So what happened is that I am participating in the Digital Ocean competition (I need to do 5PR's). So I find a report with a lot of scripts. I decide to contribute and write a discord webhook API (send messages through a webhook). The next day, the guy goes "No thanks :)" and closes the PR. Words cannot express how triggered I am. I ask him if I can make anything else out of exasperation (I did not intend to do anything for him anymore, I can't explain why I did that), he tells me no...

Working on something else. If I lose motivation in schooling or work, I go play with one of my cars or mess with an old small engine. When I realize I need money to restore the 48 year old car, I go back to playing with servers.
If I don't want to do anything I just read a book and/or listen to some music. Usually some metal, or rock, or bluegrass, or whatever else I feel like at the moment. -

Assignment wants me to "go do a thing to sort 3 numbers with if/else statements"
I'm going to use a list and list.sort() as i'm not stupid and these are bad habits to teach...
...or not.
(I know I can put the values into the right vars and then print those but that feels so wrong to me for something that's gonna be printed ONCE. That also doesn't help as it's searching for if/else statements... although it's not searching for a whole one... nor in actual code...)4 -
Why is accidentally uploading a binary file in ASCII mode via FTP still something people do? Aside from the obvious point that FTP needs to die and something else needs to be used instead, isn't it about time binary was the default?11

Not my story, but something that my friend did which inspired me a lot. So, a friend of mine who just graduated with a bachelor's in physics, had a month off after one of his semesters, and while most of us ended up doing internships in companies, he decided to do something else. He decided to go up to a local mechanic and ask him to teach him how to repair bikes for a month. Now in India, a mechanic is sadly one of the least reputed jobs, so for him to go there and work for free was unusual. After working there, he told me about the things he learned and to what an amazing extent he could apply that practical knowledge he gained. It was truly impressive. Which is why I have decided to do something like this in the future as well. With enough savings, I'm sure all of could survive a month. I can't even begin to imagine the potential of this, you could learn so much practically.

If it’s a personal project, I’ll put it off for a while and do something else to switch things up - I might work on a different project for a day and then pick the first one up again.
If it’s a work project, I can’t naturally put it down, but I might just drop it for a shorter period of time, like a minute or two. Get up, take a walk, refresh my thoughts.
This may of course be a slippery slope for some, but for me it’s proven effective in juggling my projects. -
Does anyone else feel bored of sleeping ?
Purposely closing my eyes and dozing off to sleep is something I cannot do... It's just boring.
I tire myself out until my weakness kicks in to give me a couple hours of sleep. This has been affecting my health, concentration and ultimately work and I don't know how to tackle this problem.
Trying to sleep is easier said than done, staring into a blank empty space is a huge anxiety trigger for me on top of being a less exciting thing to do.23 -
Hardware Developing.
My current school project where I build a gps thief lock for my moped had me realized one thing. I don't want to go into Hardware Developing. The first problem took me about 4 months until I finally gave up and solved it differently. And this goes on and on and on. You fixed something and the next day it doesn't work anymore for some reason. I never had this problem when coding. It's fun to do stuff with electronics but coding is just way more rewarding. Anyone else had the same experience?1 -
Felt like helping out a local brewery with a website due to the pandemic for free beer.
OMG feel like an idiot on how long it takes to set up static site from scratch.
Using the static site generator Hugo is easy but customizing the templates, content writing and the graphics are becoming such a fucking bitch! Especially the fucking graphics and not using photoshop but gimp. Is there something else do not want to learn anything else.
Not even to the hosting yet, I hope AWS for hosting static sites is as cheap as eveyone says. I know there is a learning curve but that is why I took this on so I would have experience with it and can out it on my resume.
New respect for free-lancers that do it all.9 -
Sometimes I wish I could go back in time 10 years and tell the coder-wannabe I were back then to choose something else to do for a living, like being a carpenter or something like that.
Sure, the money is good, and the job is super comfy (working from the bed is awesome), but dude, the stress of corporate client-crisis caused by poor management bullshit 9-5 is going to kill me.
How you deal with this fucking toxic environment? There are some alternatives to this? I love to code, a lot, but lately I'm wishing it was just a hobby.5 -
Work on something else. Have nothing else to work, invent a feature and work on that for a while. Do something other than that specific problem and an answer will come to you.

Hello DevRant,
I need your help
I'm currently studying Game design and development first year in The Netherlands and I love programming but I hate designing. I was thinking about changing the course to something like Ethical Hacking or Computer science. The reason why I want to do this is that they teach us openfl until second year and I feel like I learn nothing until now.
Do you think would be better to change the course or to stay but start programming in something else? And what programming language would you recommend?
P.s. I also want to apply for a part time job/summer school to gain experience but I had no luck at all.
P.s.s. You are the best community for me!

Don't quite get this.
There's some bug where u run sudo -u#-1 cmd, it lets you run it as root.
But then it says only if you have permission to do so.
Does that just mean "run sudo" or something else?
I'm thinking sudo -u#-1 /bin/bash would basically give anyone root?

I once was able to focus on tasks, and then I took this job. The boss has me switching priorities and tasks so often that it's often best to do nothing and wait. How do you guys get better at programming?
I'm very new to this sphere and currently I'm learning C++ (think strings, bools and early stages of if/else) due to university course and I have fun with it during labs, but when I have to do something by myself from scratch, I reach a certain point and then I get stuck. I try re-reading the lectures but I can't find appropriate solution for the issues I face.
Do I keep doing simple tasks or do I just watch/read guides or tutorials? What is your input on the matter, fellows? :)4 -
Thankfully not anymore, but Asana was the most frustrating and confusing piece of crap when I had to work with it.
I would literally spend hours trying to sort out where everything came from, let my boss know that other people were trying to get me to do something via some private task that no one else can see, sort out random ass replies to random points in conversations and then open up my email and answer all the half-baked open ended questions that were sent separately over email.1 -

I'm officially convinced that my computer is cursed by now:
I get a Oculus Touch Bundle. Connect it to the computer, both sensors through USB 2, HMD too. One of them on an extension cord, experimental 360 degree setup (and yes, I'm covering the lenses when not playing).
Works great for a couple weeks, then I start getting 8603 and 8609 errors (USB connection bad or too little bandwidth. Usually happens when you do something else on the same USB controller).
Trying all of the setups that comply with the setup manual, none works...
... Thinking "fuck it, can't get any worse now", I connect both sensors to the USB 3 ports on my board (A big thou shalt not according to the manual).
Works perfectly. No lag, no loss of tracking.
Well, I guess if something applies to 99.9% of all computers in the world, mine is among the 0.1%. I'm a living corner case, 🤣
Guess I'll move to the Netherlands and become a Ganja farmer.2 -
If your unit test has a bunch of mocked up dependencies which you puppet to do whatever the fuck you want. Something could be improved perhaps
- write a test at a lower level if possible where the dependencies can be abstracted away, or you pass down what you need from them
- write a higher level integration test, i.e. which uses real spring context instead of mock dependencies
But my senior tells me that a unit test will almost always mock all of its dependencies, it should only test the logic in it's tiny atomic piece of work. Mock everythign else out.
Devrant, how do you unit test? I'm looking to learn more on the topic and hear how others do it.5 -
This internal api is killing me. Why the fuck do people return an array of numbers inside a field that has a generic name such as `icons` to convey information such as "hasOptionFooIncluded". Because of course then icons contains '6'. Yet if both 6 and 4 are in there, it means something else. Needless to say there is no documentation whatsoever what each number or group of numbers actually means so I have to ask around to find out what numbers means what in order to wrap that call away into something maintainable. Because the API is deprecated and we don't want to fix shit in there. We just create other shit depending on this crappile. :/
Stop using magic numbers. Just stawp it! -

TMW your showing your boss your code and the output, then asks if you can do something else with it. Knowing that it's implemented you try it. Massive amounts of bugs. You think it's a simple fix and make it worse by quickly trying to fix it. Then he leaves. You undo a few changes mess around with the code for a minute and then everything works fine again.
TLDR: Bugs show up when your boss is in the same room as you. Disappear when he's not.1 -
The worst (and only, really): I signed a 5 year contract with this company and now I'm miserable.
But I can't to quit, or else I'll have to pay 16000€ so yeah...
And the worst part: after I signed the contract I realised I don't really want to do this, so now I'm stuck in this company for 5 years (unless they fire me) and can't do what I ACTUALLY want to do.
I had another opportunity at the time, but I didn't go because I would be making a lot less, but at least I could leave when I wanted!
Also, my family said this would be better, and 5 years wasn't a lot of time, so I trusted them... What a bad idea!
I will spend the first half of my 20's doing something I should have kept as a hobbie!
I only make bad decisions, I swear12 -
Short term: Become familiar and independent enough to choose my own machine and software to work with. Right now it's "Here's your MBP, we've already installed the stuff that the rest of us use". If I try and switch to something else and I run into a problem, I'm on my own.
Mid term: Like a lot of you it seems, I'd love to have my own setup. Either have my own company or partner with some friends/family. Whatever lets me do the work I want, build the things I want, and gives me a bit more freedom outside of work. Perhaps a little side-hustle to help with finances.
Long term: I'd love to return to my studies. I don't think I'll ever stop coding, it scratches an itch, a need to make something out of nothing, but I'd love to pursue a career in physics.5 -
Double rant....whattttt!!!
1) That moment when you're like god this code is awesome/I'm a genius/Can anyone else other than me even comprehend how to do something this awesome? AND THEN you shift to "wait a second..." Is this actually super convoluted/inefficient/there is a way easier way to do this? :o
2) Do people even know that google can provide them with like any and all of human knowledge? I feel like 50 times a day in my head I'm screaming "GOOGLE IT!!!!!!!!!!"
2 examples....
Earlier today I ctrl+alt+down arrow my co-workers computer because he left it unlocked and I was feeling especially awry so when he kept saying I don't know how to fix it, I was like google it!!!! I'm teaching you a valuable life skill...
Second. I was at my in-laws house and we got on the topic of what does "impeachment" actually entail? So my mother in law was like hmmm I thought it meant so and so....I'll have to ask my friend so and so the next time I see her....she's a political science major or something like that....
In my head....
I'm like.....
Or....
You could.....GOOGLE IT!!!!!!2 -
Am I the only one that is very neutral while learning a new language or framework or whatever it may be? Like cause you have to go through the basics and you’re basically stuck copying what the tutorial, book, video, whatever source tells you to do and the best you can FUCKING do is change a few things. I love learning new stuff don’t get me wrong I love adding tools to my arsenal.
I just don’t know what else I could try to do because it’s new ground but I want to acknowledge I’m learning it by making my own small basic program with what I’ve been showed but there’s not enough to do different stuff and I have to go back to the tutorials and copying and I feel like I’m learning NOTHING it’s just a annoying feeling for me personally idk if anyone feels the same. Am I crazy? Or am I just doing something wrong?
Also to clarify the all caps “FUCKING” was because my phone changed it to ducking and I wanted to make sure autocorrect knew I meant what I meant.5 -
Pills. Failing that, everything everyone else has said... if you find yourself procrastinating too much, get medicated.
On top of that, routine, regiment and willpower.
I started learning Russian recently, trying for the second time. This time around, I found that the small positive reward gamification elements of Dualingo to be a great help (Streaks and daily bonus BS currency).
I've also found myself using Trello to list out things I need or want to do to stop from overwhelming myself. If I have a new task or thing I need to do whilst I'm already getting something else done, I note it down and then forget about it until it's time to find something new to get done.
If all else fails, then look at yourself. Take a long, hard look at yourself in the mirror. I became good at this through necessity, after illness and injury I realised that there's no time for chronic procrastination. If your life expectancy halved what would you change and how quickly?
If you still can't fix it, I'm guessing it's not as big a problem as you think it is... enjoy yourself! -
I generally just do something else until I can think clearly – that might be birding, playing computer games, or one of a number of other things.

Data(g) = Status1
And then Data(g) /= Invalid
Then
Do something else equally cool
Elsif (mode) /= manual

So, I just started Week of Code 23, this was my first online competition. I got the email to start the first challenge and I clicked the link, then I went to do something else. When I got back I solved the challenge in 5 minutes (or less idk). I clicked submit, and then looked at the leaderboard.
My current position was something around 900 and I took 70+ minutes to complete the assignment xD :p

People are usually better known for something special in their social circles, like a habit, or something they like, or a phrase they often use, like their catchphrase...
As a developer, do you think you have like a code leitmotif? A singular habit or a certain algorithm you like to use?
For example, I'm very mad about string quotes, so I tend to use strictly ' unless it's better / necessary to use ", ` or something else.9 -
Fuck. I really hate it when someone has a domain I'd like to have, and doesn't do shit with it. Come on! A webpage that says "Live soon"?!
It's like having a subscription to the gym and never go to the gym. Total waste of money and opportunity for someone else to use the domain, just for the sake of "There is the slightest possibility that I maybe want to do something with this domain in the future".
Fuck this shit.3 -
1. The power you have with it.
With that, I mean solving your own or someone else's issues.
Be it automation, parsing weird formats, or anything else, it can usually be achieved by coding something for the task.
2. The logic (when compared to humans).
Unlike humans, code does what it's told to do. Us humans, well, we often misinterpret things. Code, however, usually has a single meaning.
3. How things can be improved over time.
Finding a way do something faster and implementing it is really satisfying.4 -

Day 9 of devWholesome...
Dedicate some time to learning something new or pick up a new hobby! Software development may be fun, but sometimes it can be frustrating and time consuming. Take some time off to do something else as well. Maybe learn an instrument or learn how to draw. I have decided to pick up drawing and am practicing to have nice looking art (might even post in a later devWholesome post). Learning something new can broaden your interests and opportunities. And as always, make the most out of your day!random wholesome positive happy hobby learn devwholesome i slightly broke the embed generator good day4 -
Just finished high-school and we had a lot of coding classes. I have a good foundation of programming concepts and i'm a quick learner. What should i try to do during college in order to make some money on the side? I need something flexible and part-time programming jobs aren't really a thing here.
Game design, web development, maybe something else?What would you all recomend?4 -
Waiting for DNS records to update..
It's always a difficult choice; Do I work on something else or do I hope record will be updated in few minutes..
I always choose wrong, will keep you updated :p9 -
Webdevs: do you prefer Google Chrome (or Chromium), Mozilla Firefox or something else for the default webdevelopment and why?17

Let me tell you a short story. Back in 2016 I resigned my job and started working in my current company 1.10.2016.
One year later in 2017 I got a loan approved on the same date 1.10.2017.
Going forward to today, I resigned my current job moving on and the date when I'm starting the new job is also 1.10. and to make more interesting the load is ending on the same date. I was already thinking about that date and the coincidence and remembered that my wife's birthday is on the SAME date, now I'm afraid and have a feeling that something else will happen hahah
What do you think am I just overthinking or? :D5 -
When Pavlova danced, she worked with the audience like no one else could.
When Ulanova danced, she completely ignored the audience and transitioned into her own world.
Both are unarguably the best ballet dancers known to humankind.
There is no "right" way to do something if you want to be really good. You can totally invent your own ways of doing things, this is how our science got to where it's at basically.6 -
What do you guys do to pull yourself out of a rut when you hit a wall in a project?
I'm developing a large scale enterprise level application in flutter/dart by myself and reached a really weird point where there are so many things to be done I can't pick which one. I've spent the last few days on authentication and logic so I think I need to tackle something else for a bit... any insight would rule, I've never had other developers to talk to about this stuff before!4 -
Not loving the implicit return statement within Scala. I like to avoid else statements to keep the level of nesting low and do early return yet Scala doesn't allow that.
(I am aware that I should flatMap that shit though in some cases I just want a simple if not foo then throw exception line. And continue with the next block until I return something.)
So you either have to create if-else-nesting beats or use pattern matching. The latter seems overly complicated for this use case (though it has its moments).
I know that I can make the return explicit yet the linter warns against that. It feels so verbose and I currently do not see any benefits and would argue that the code becomes both harder to read and maintain.3 -
Can there be a happy rant?
This is going to be a bit of a rambling semi coherent story here:
So this customer who just doesn't know what their data schema is or how they use it (they're a conglomeration of companies so maybe you get how that works out in a database). For every record there's like a ton of reference number type things mapped all over the DB to fit each companies needs needs.
To each company the data means something different, they use the data differently, and despite their claims otherwise, I think there are some logical conflicts in there regarding things like "This widget is owned by company A, division B, user C.". I'm also pretty sure different companies actually don't agree on who owns what... but when I show them they just sort of dance around what they've said in the past...
So I write a report (just an SQL query that outputs ... somewhere ... I mean what isn't that?) that tells them about all the things that happened given X, Y, Z.
Then every damn morning they'd get all up in arms about how some things are 'missing' but sometimes they don't know what or why because they've no clue what the underlying data actually is / their own people don't enter the data in a consistent way. (garbage in garbage out man...)
So I've struggled with this for a few weeks and been really frustrated. Every morning when I'm trying to do something else ... emails about how something isn't working / missing.
In the meantime I'm also frustrated by inquiries about "hey this is just a simple report right?" (to be clear folks asking that aren't being jerks, and they're not wrong ... it really should be simple)
Anyway my boss being the good guy he is offers to take it over, so I can do some things. Also sometimes it helps just to have someone else own something / not just look it over.
So a few days into this.... yup, emails coming in about things 'missing' or 'wrong' every day.
Like it sucks, but it's nice to see it suck for someone else too as validation. -
I'm thinking about what language to dive into next.
I already have a pretty good knowledge of Go and mediocre knowledge of C and Java.
So far I thought about...
1. CPP, as I need it for school and it runs on literally anything.
2. Rust, as is seems to spread and the combination of low-level, memory-safety and abstraction seems pretty appealing to me.
3. Kotlin, specifically kotlin-native, is it combines java-like high-level programming with native speed.
4. Nim, as it combines high-level techniques with c-like freedom.
What do you people recommended, or something completely else?6 -
I'm not a Wordpress pro, but i've done some work on it and... well, the HTML + PHP mix is the only evidence you need to convince someone, there is no god, only satan, but other then that, it's hard to find anything else that your clients will accept & can use. And yes it's the most important thing - at the end of day, they are the one giving you money.
Besides:
- the Wordpress dev community is pretty cool.
- everything has been invented, so the development is pretty easy.
- if you have something more fancy to do, there is always a Wordpress API.
PS - fuck HTML + PHP mix.1 -
After a big part of the day spending in Angular i decided to do something else. I went studying a bit on how to increase conversion. Partially because this was the main goal of the webdev team in the coming months. The UX designer saw it and told me if he where me he would study more code and scripting.
Like dude. Wtf. Im doing this for 1 in the 8 working hours. Get off my back asshole.1 -
The ability to create something, something useful. Software is the intersection of artistry and invention. Honestly, why do anything else?

Fucking group projects fuck them oh so much fucking fuck fuck fuck.
What's that? You want to basically ignore the spec and do something else? Fuck.
Wait, let's not use the great resources given to us? Fucking fuck.
Oh, you're just going to ignore the fact that everyone else disagrees with you? Fuckity fuck fuck.
I am so angry. You don't get to railroad your team.
You fucker. Ugh. -
I see a lot of hatred for Python all over the place, so I have to ask: Why? What do people hate so much about Python? It's fantastic for my use-case (interacting with and managing AWS resources), so is it just a case of "good for this one thing, bad for everything else," or something different?25

Anybody tried the Work Cafe by Santander? I was in Warsaw Poland on semi vacation/scouting exercise. I had half a days work to do so I visited one of these work cafes. Very impressed! Free desk, free power and free fast wifi, they even gave me a free coffee cis i’m a santander customer in the uk. Stay as long as you want, they even have sound proof phone booths and a number of rooms to have private meetings that you can book in advance. This is so cool and something that will be great when I eventually move there. Anybody else have them in their city? Well don Santander!2
-
I know this is needed for extra quality but god do I hate having to validate everything I do by so many coworkers before actually being able to do something else. It would be fine if I could get another task while waiting for that validation but nooo, I have to wait until they’re done “validating” to actually move on.
It really feels like I’m losing so much time waiting for people...1 -
Just do something else. I can only rack my brain on the same problem for so long before it's pointless. As one of my professors often says "I've solved more coding problems in the shower than I ever have in front of a computer.1

How do you deal with code/project burnout?
I've been refactoring and bugfixing my script for a week now. The project seems simple on the surface but the edge cases and methods to handle certain subsets of data are breaking it because handling them is vague and takes time to figure out and every day something is fixed and something else ends up as the issue preventing completion.
On the surface the idea seems sound so I'm also under pressure to get something "this easy" done.
Starting to feel some burnout on this.1 -
I want to create something using Electron, just because I thought it would be fun(web-development background). Anyone else using it? Any tips? I thought it would be a great exercise to dig through the Atom IDE code, as what I want to make needs some similar features, what do you think?5

Does anyone else buy something expensive and feel like you have to be super productive to justify the expense? I just bought a new laptop and feel like I should step my game up with my study time before it arrives haha. I do this every time I buy something whether it’s a book, clothes or tech.2

I don't want to answer my manager. Each SCRUM, each SPRINT retrospective is becoming so long. Everyone in my team works on different projects, it's no use listening to all that and wait for your turn and on top of that your manager bombards you with the questions that you really know the answers to but he always questions again like give me estimates, like if I haven't ever worked on something how am I supposed to give you the estimates.
My english is just lowering it's standard day by day, I try to think smarter words but no it is sucking bad.
I am not frustrated as I am learning how to see all this as a part of my learning. I am a good developer I know but I haven't worked on code for like 3 months, everything needs to be investigated, contacting the other teams etc. I am just thinking to close on the projects that I have right now and leave.
In 1:1s my manager said something else but in team meeting asked me to do something else.
I haven't coded in more than 2 months even before that it was at least 3 months gap. I want to take leave for a week and work on the code. But fuck it, open source is not allowed in my company. WTH WTH WTH!!!
I switched the company for growth and I definitely did not have any technical growth.1 -
Usually an idea comes up in the back of my head... Then i wait. After some time, the idea comes again. Now ill think about it, when i lay in bed, when im in a train, everywhere. Ill think about the technical implementation. How ill present it to someone else. To my boss. To my little brother. I think about the counterarguments, ill simulate discussions in my head, how ill defend it.
And then, one day, while thinking about it, ill start writing it.
Edit: Its like my brain needs enough entropy to do something. Then it works, then it generates entropy again, eg youtube, gaming, working on something else, dreaming etc -
someone asks me : What do people not tell you about being a software engineer?
So the thing is , No one actually knows what they’re talking about.
See, the thing about building software is that usually you are inventing something.
Not in a pretentious way. I don’t mean “inventing something” as in inventing the light bulb, but I mean making something new that someone else hasn’t built before (well, hopefully — if you’re building something someone else already built, then you might be doing it wrong).
Because of this, people are usually just coming up with solutions based on what they think will work.
And that’s about the best you can do. Sure, the more experience you have, the more you can recognize certain patterns, or lay certain architectural foundations, but you’re mostly just coming up with something new. Maybe not 100% new, maybe some sort of slightly different thing than another thing that exists, but it’s still new.
So yeah, no one knows what they’re talking about. You’ll sit in meetings, with people talking about all kinds of smart-sounding stuff. Most people are trying their best to understand and play catch-up. No one wants to be the dumb one. People try to make it a science as much as possible, but if you really wanna be honest, people are just trying stuff and seeing if it works.
It’s not a bad thing. That’s just the nature of software development.6 -
Worst project I worked on was fixing up and optimizing a clients legacy Magento app. this thing had leftover code from a few different development teams, and then my company had to make it run better. We outsourced much of it, and it wasn't using a proper git setup. in order to do absorb at all, we had to SSH to a dev server, work directly, and pray another person on the team want working on the same file or breaking something else.1
-
I see a lot of people saying they are programmers and they can't fix other shit. But I mean, using that brain to do other things won't surely kill you. I know you don't have time, but it may be worth taking a while to focus on fixing something else. Just to know how to do it. I do a lot of electronics, but occasionally I've been a plumber, an electrician, a painter and a mechanic.
That said, I know, I'm 17 and I surely hadn't the full programmer experience yet, but I'll try to keep this attitude when I grow up.3 -
Sometimes it gets really annoying when your client tells you to do something in the beginning and you do it, but towards the end of the project they want us to do something else.
Arrrggghh -
Code as often as you can. Don't burn yourself out, you don't have to strive for a daily masterpiece, but do something.
You're just starting and these new skills need constant work I you don't want to lose them immediately, so if your company tries to put you on something else that's not your job, don't be afraid to say no. If you start working IT for them "just to help out, just for now", you'll undo all your hard work and have to start again from scratch down the line.2 -
Why do I keep getting an error when posting my rant saying, "There was an error creating the rant."?
Has anyone else gotten this before? Happening both on mobile app, mobile browser, and laptop's browser so it's not the platform.
EDIT: So this rant went through so it must be something in that specific rant. It's pretty long.8 -
Question:
Could a mobile application such as, facebook (well a minimum version or it), twitter, devrant etc., be built using the MEAN stack (using ionic framework). Or is really ionic very slow?
Or do we need React Native "for better performance"? thus ME[R]N stack?
I am confused, and every article i read says something else.
What are you devs using these days? i need some opinions here.
F*** this sh*t (now my post is a rant)4 -
We've reached a point where every fucking thing is made so gosh darn easy... It's impossible to do something else with said thing.
Vue.js in typescript which will be translated with webpack for web?
How about fuck u?2 -
Why do you lil' shits keep making LAYERS and LAYERS of unnecessary abstraction and then call it goddamn progress???
Dude what the fuck is this UEFI shit?!
Why the hell do I NEED to import a frigging library and read tons of boring and overly complicated documentation just so I can paint a pixel on the screen now uh??
Alright alright yeah so the BIOS is a little basic but daaaamit son if you want something a bit more complicated you make it yourself or install an OS that provides it! Like we've been doing it for years!!!
Dude, you don't get to know what a file system is until I tell you!
The PC be like:
"You wanna dereference the 0x0 pointer? There you go: it's 0xE9DF41, anything else?
You wanna write to the screen? Ok I have a perfectly convinient interrupt setup for that.
Wanna paint a pixel yellow? Ok, just call this other interruption. Theere we go.
And it only took four bytes and a nanosecond to do it."
That shit works, and if you want something more complex, but not too much, that still runs efficiently install DOS.
Don't mess around with the hardware pleeease.
We can still understand what's going on down there. Once UEFI steps in, it'll be like sealing a door forever. Long live BIOS damn it all!1 -
I took a few days off to move and when I came back, my manager had posted a message in chat about how horrible one of the naming conventions was (an implementation I made). One of my co-workers then defended it and defended something else I wrote that he was complaining about.
We had a 1:1 the day I got back and holy shit ... I did loose my cool and I'm not proud of it, but the guy went totally bat shit. He said I was the problem with them team, screaming about going off and writing rouge things, how he was my boss and I needed to do what he fucking told me to.
In my 20+ years in tech, I have never had to deal with a psycho. He served work release for assault and witness tampering last year and he told us a story that made it seem like it was his all his "crazy ex-girlfriend" who made trumped up charges. After that conversation, I doubt that's the case.
He's still under house arrest for something else until the end of May too. The entire team told me not to do any 1:1 calls with him and our project manager, who is really amazing, will probably be on any calls we need to do in the future.
I've also all confidence in him as a manager. Even when our PM tried to do a retro for the team, he still passively aggressively bitched about things that obviously related to my projects and the entire team could see it. -
ok you go to your fancy tiled cabinet to do some serious shit. how you pleasure yourself while doing it?

PO: "Remember guys, protect your scope!"
.. moments later, after the PO meeting..
PO: "I want you to do user story x but I want it changed this way"
me: "Ok"
*pling* notification: PO changed jira story
*I work on it for a few hours*
me: "Is this what you wanted?"
PO: "Yeah, actually I made up my mind. I want you to implement it totally different and scrap what you added now"
me: "Thanks for wasting my time bro"
me: *codes*
.. a few hours later, mid-coding..
PO: "Uh, yeah, changed my mind. The way you did it now is ok, but I want something else added"
*3 iterations of the same crap later*
me: "Sigh, make up your minds!"5 -
My uncle is interestes in security, but personal security, he wants to be more peivate. So he told me he had installed Kali linux and got a course it, so I tried to explain him that this is more of a professional thing... that he needs something else.. and so he asked me: "What do I need, which book can I buy?"
I didn't really know. For me it's common sense to get a NAS, maybe have a laptop that is never connected to the internet, or maybe encrypt trafic encrypt hard disks.
But is there a book for that? You have 30 seconds to shine, how would u respond?6 -
!!!rant // gotta be unique
So upon thorough consideration, I've decided to switch to Linux. I had to use an old laptop which took 2 minutes to get to the desktop with Windows, so I did what every other person would do and installed Linux on it (Ubuntu 17). Although it was incomparable with my dev mashine, it was snappy enough for me and for my web development tools and needs. (git, vscode, slack and chrome)
Cutting to the point, I've heard that thebl next Ubuntu is coming out next month. Should I wait and switch to that or can you guys recommend something better, perhaps Mint or sth else?9 -
What are your coffee/tea drinking habits?

Do you use a coffee maker/machine or something else?
I'm wondering if I should invest in a coffee machine 🤔26 -
I have a small job I work with another team on Fridays. For the last 2 weeks we've had issues with an API for our accounts server not working correctly. It's been a shitter because it only accepts XML. I've been tearing my hair out all day and getting very little usable info from the company that made the API as we reached the point where we couldn't do anything else without the API working.
Today we discovered the issue. It's that the API receiving the XML was failing because the Bool values were in capital. As far as their API is concerned, "TRUE" != "true". Something not mentioned anywhere on their (incredibly short) documentation.
I might go insane tonight. -
What do developers do with rubber ducks?
I see lots of pics of rubber ducks on desks. Does it help to take out your anger? or something else .. 😮5 -
I feel really frustrated and annoyed right now. The reason for that is that I'm in spain with my family and they take me every day to the beach to go swimming, lay down in the sun and watch old women without bra they are all like 40 - 60 years old. The worst part I didn't bring my computer with me. Well I brought my phone and my tablet but I don't like to code with them.
All I'm saying is that it's really boring and I want to be with my computer in my own nerdy environment and coding something. I want to be wierd again I don't like this normal world they are just wasting their.
It's gonna be like this till monday next week. What do I do guys, does anybody else feel the same?12 -
I have been having one of those days, well weeks where new concepts that would have otherwise taken a few hours, to learn and implement are taking days !! I don't know how y'all consistently learn new things and implement them, while still meeting deadlines.
My team usually holds weekly progress meetings where we discuss completed tasks and the following week's tasks. During the last meeting, I hadn't completed anything worth noting and I had no major reason other than, not having fully understood the concept.
Which is embarrassing because everyone else had done something.
I know, I know, I shouldn't compare myself to others but we all know my boss does. I don't blame him though, I mean I always pick the cake with more icing, and that's just food!
I don't even know what to do about it anymore!!! Is this a phase? Is it normal? What do people do about it? wait it out?3 -
There's a right way, and a wrong way...
Correct:
if (version <= OLD_VERSION) {
... do_something_old ...
}
else { ... something new ... }
The wrong way:
if (version = NEW_VERSION) {
... do something new ...
} else { ... do something old ... }
What my standup report is today:
I'm modifying thousands of lines of SQL code because the script was hard-coded to only work on SQL Server 2008 R2, and we're using SQL 2017 in our test environment. All of those lines now fail because we don't match your "new version" number.4 -
I am very obsessed when it comes to things I'm developing or making. I can't work on that project or even take a look at it if I have some other things I need to do that day because I know I'm not going to be able to concentrate on anything else if there is something that needs to be added or fixed until I successfully finish it. And I will be very grumpy and aggressive to other people that interrupts my thought train. I understand taking breaks and talking to your coding buddy is a must. But I go absolutely obsessed if I can't figure something out. Which I won't eat nor converse. I will most likely get over this problem of mine eventually but for now devrant is the ideal place for me to relax and get my thoughts together which I am very grateful about ! Keep being awesome.

is it a good idea to structure the experiencr section of a resume like so?
* experience (any tech or knowhow by keyword along with amount of time used)
* familiar (used once or twice in the past.)
* encountered (did a tutorial once, or fixed a bug someone had, or did initial project setup using it)
"Encountered" basically is what people usually use the experience section for: keyword stuffing, and gaming the hiring system.
"Familiar" is used for anything you can honestly say you used at some point, or something you found wasnt too difficult despite being new.
And "experienced" is anything you've used the longest relative to everything else, or what you use on a daily basis.
yea or nay? how do you all structure resumes? what do you do different fron standard resumes, if at all?1 -
!rant, I have a couple of sky hd+ boxes knocking around, we've cancelled our sky subscription as we're big on netflix and amazon prime instead and sky don't want the boxes back. I was going to take the hard drives out (1 TB each) as i could use some more external storage for my work and pics, but before I do so is there anything I can do with the boxes instead?
Afterall they have a circuit board, memory and a chipset, can I replace the sky OS with something else?2 -

So the next Flutter event is on December 4th which means Flutter 1.0 is around the corner. Flutter is amazing with a very neat idea it has ReactJS like state management and everything is a Widget even the app itself. So i was thinking what else could we expect? React Native has Flutter, but what about React JS? I think Google might introduce a Competitor for ReactJS something like Flutter Web or FlutterJS which can work on parallel/similar to Flutter but for the web of course, and also maybe give some news on the Fuchsia. What do you think? :)5

I know devrant is not the place to ask this but I didn't know what else to do....I very often have doubts about weather I like programming or not even when I started learning programming 2 years ago...Does this imply that I don't really like it? Because I believe that if you really like something than you don't have doubts about it but am not sure if I am correct or not.8

Everyone is talking about how safari mobile is ass and that it needs to be destroyed, but nobody talks about how Firefox mobile is an actual piece of shit and how Firefox in general is generally behind the curve now in supporting recent web tech. Hey, i do not want to spam DevRant with non dev stuff, but i really want to ask this you, i personally cant only code all time, im coding full time and a lot in my free time, but i just cant only code.
So i found another thing that i fell in love with, i fell in love with animal photography!!
I want to ask you, yes you reading this: do you need something else than coding or not? and if you do, what? let me know with a simple comment!6 -
Let's say we want to host a small-medium project currently running on shared hosting (ehm) in cloud. What do you recommend? Amazon or DigitalOcean or something else? Our requirements are: availability > price, a good price/performance ratio, EU servers with possible North America expansion. Emphasis on availabity.
I think a simple 4-8 core server is going to be enough for now as our app is not resource heavy, but we may need to expand in the future.9 -
Hi guys. Finally cleared up my time. Well not really but I wanna do something else cause I've been depressed af lately so I wanna try stuff I enjoyed.
Anyway. Last time I got quite a few from here but anyone need help with design/styling of projects? Wanna boost portfolio. Can use sketch or directly code in the styling for you.
For free. Though I wouldn't pizza money haha.
Let me know if you have/need anything
Thanks.3 -

I feel like we need an agreed upon expression or marker to signify sarcasm. (Since the internet is still severely lacking in the ability to textually communicate tone of voice.)
I know that several people have used the "/s" from reddit, but I assume that people have mixed feelings about adopting stuff from reddit for various reasons.
Should we keep going with the "/s" or do we want to come up with something else? (Maybe something computer-nerdier even?)
Should we bully dfox and trogus into adding a sarcasm-checkbox-feature to posts and comments?
Go ahead and share suggestions and ideas. :)1 -
Recently I've been thinking about doing some PHP freelancing to get some extra cash, but I'm not exactly sure where to start. I used to do freelancing before but those kind of jobs were from friends and former colleagues who contacted me.
So how do you get started with a client base of zero? I have looked at sites like freelancer.com but it seems like the majority of those projects want something for very little, or you get underbid by someone else.1 -

Anybody else getting annoyed with VSCode lately? I’m constantly getting updates to the editor and various plugins that add near-forced autocomplete suggestions, cursor hijacking, codelens and inlay hints (messes up spacing and layout), etc. It’s starting to drive me crazy! Just let me write my code! I love the syntax highlighting and autocomplete, but developer tools need to be optional, not have their off button buried behind some 5-layer JSON object that’s not documented anywhere!
I just want to write code, and I want my editor to be a tool, not an annoying little bee swarming my face all the time trying to get me to do things I don’t want to do! Microsoft and plugin devs need to stop enabling these obtrusive features by default and put them behind a “New Features” wizard or something!3 -
Wordpress for E-Commerce? Is this a practical thing to do... I am certainly not a WP user but thought it was cool to construct a bloggling site or something else similar, but E-Commerce? Liferant. I feel annoyed If I compare my efforts to efforts of my "friends". I put 500% more in my self education, my career and professional life and I earn just a tiny bit more. I don't even know if I have friends anymore. We do not have a single thing common. While I want to develop, learn something, build something useful for people, they only want to drink, going out etc. Before we had some lan parties some game night but it was long ago. I lost any interest in travel and parties. I don't enjoy alcohol, I still consume it when I'm with them because there nothing else to do. I also become vegan about 2.5 years ago and those bbq`s are just pain in the ass. Plus I heard the sentence "show me your friends and I tell you your life" - uff.. I had never a single person who I knew personally and who has similar mindset like I do. Shall I start to look for friends? Even the thought feels kind of pathetic to me. I'm a freaking island in middle of the society who is trying to make it better but it's fighting against it with full force. I'm tired. I'm not suicidal and I still enjoy the life, but I'm crazy alone in what I like to do.2

Do any of you fine people work somewhere where salaries are transparent?
By which I mean, everyone knows (or is able to find out) what everyone else earns
If so, how does it work? Whilst I'm not too bothered how much my colleagues earn (unless it's an order of magnitude more than me or something), I know some people definitely would be4 -
Am I doing something wrong or am I the only one not able to install anything on Pop! OS?
Googling doesn't find me this issue what so ever.
It always tells me about some dependencies and that it won't install them.
And then i have to do --reinstall, which either does it's job or tells me shit can't be downloaded.
Wtf is this shit? I love pop os but for gods sake let me install libsdl or wine or anything else!5 -
If you need to get some chores done but you are procrastinating, just try and do some work on your side project instead. Somehow my house always ends up spotless when I am trying to focus on something else.

I created two projects and they are now under testing. Now i am working on two other projects (& more to come). I'd be working on something but i get a lot of emails to do some changes or fix some bugs.
I feel i'm slow but it's only me working on those 4 projects, i can't stop something and work on something else!!
Should i work more at home? Or is it not my fault?
Nobody complained on my work, i'm giving good results although i feel i am losing control, but what if they think i'm a person who can't manage well? any advice???5 -
I've been working on this personal project for awhile, I showed some screenshots, then I showed some updates (which I promptly deleted cause it was plain ugly). A website aimed at the "not-so-seasoned" devs, and I've been at a creative plateau for about 3 days now. I try to do some front-end, when I like what I see, I take care of the corresponding server-side logic, but for some reason, I'm having "Developer's block" (is that even a thing?).
Every second that goes by I try to do something else none code related, but I can't shake thinking about the project, but once I switch back to it, fuckin crickets.
I'm not asking a question this time (for once lol), just a mini dev's block rant. -
i am using xubuntu have been using it for 2 years now on my personal laptop. would like to try out something else, a different distro, what do you recommend ?9
-
I just started a web dev course.
I definitely hate bootstrap, jquery-mobile and all their fucking classes.
Does it exist a good reference poster (or something else printable) with all these classes and what they do?3 -
What programming language do you guys recommend to learn?
Currently, I know Java, PHP and JS but I want to try something else...
I was thinking maybe C, C++ or C#, opinions? Also, many people seem to praise Python as the new god of programming languages which will solve all of our problems, but until now I ran into nothing but problems really with literally every python-application I have used (mostly incompatibility between certain packages which actually were the required version, I found it very annoying to fix every time). Is that just me or does that happen more often?16 -
So we got the results of our performance review got another fucking 3 again this year, what a fucking piss take, I feel fucking insulted, having to much work to do is not my fault. Oh I haven’t documented something properly because I had to start on something else and something else oh and this is a fucking priority too, talk about feeling unappreciated don’t think I have ever wanted to quit more in the 18 years I’ve worked there. I let the last 3 slide because things suffered while I was off work as my son had an operation but this is just insulting now

Anyone else wonder how they got into the kind of the coding they're in?
Like, I wanted to make plugins for music software and DAWs and now I do front end web...
I don't even know what fucking language is used for something like that -
What is the best approach for Continuous Integration / Continuous Delivery/Deployment? I'm using SVN as code repository and I need to identify the files that goes to Test/QA env. and the ones that goes do Prod env. (by Commit message or something else) via sFTP.
Any help would be appreciated. Already tested Jenkins, GoCD and Jetbrains Teamcity.1 -
//Not meant to be a rant
I'm doing the doc for a uni project and IDK how to comment our interfaces (not talking about the methods - I can get my way around those) (it's a pair work and my colleague told me to do the doc because I type faster than her 😛 I don't really mind tbh). What should I write as a description of the interface, everything I think about sounds stupid LoL
For example: there's an interface for an activity (which requires 3 arguments to create an object Activity). Do I simply go like
/ * *
* Activity
*
* ( we have to put our names )
* /
Or should I write something more/else? Any tips?
This is bugging me all the way to hell and back -
How do you guys keep up with new concepts and tech? Or what is your preferred source for this activity?
Conferences(in person or youtube)
ACM journals/SIGs
Research papers
Blogs/hackernews or the like
Books

It's better to do mobile front end before desktop front end when implementing
Heard this offhand from somebody who heard it from someone else but didn't get any elaboration on why.
Anybody else heard something like this before and can explain why?8 -
Well I will Program ai to do another job as long as possible.
When nothing else there is to do I will either find something to do or enjoy as our goal (automate things that far that we are not needed) is fulfilled.
Don't think it will ever happen but would be quite nice. -
What do y'all think? I'm new here, junior. I finish my tasks generally well within the allotted time. At the moment I take my time, look over my work and try make sure I've done things correctly / as best I can. At first I tried to work quickly and show that I was motivated. Now I've really lowered my acceleration because it feels like no one else is in a rush.. except for when there's deadline pressure. It feels like no one really expects me to get much done. Like, change the theme colors, you've got 3 days. I'm done in like an hour. So I go sloooooooow, change something, go on Reddit or devrant, change something else. Don't check that change in yet, they'll know you've been finished for hours...
Do you think this is the right approach? Or should I try apply myself more, get more done, do extra tasks when I have time? From what I've read online, it's generally not worth working "more" than necessary because it's not appreciated and just results in people expecting more from you.
Thoughts?1 -
Have any devs done bar work before..?
I've always enjoyed doing things outside of work, and I work 3-4 days a week in my main job to create time for this. It's great for my mental health, and means I can optimise the main job for pay/good benefits and fulfil my "other needs" (stimulation/challenge/enjoyment) in other places.
The main things for me are dev contracting on the side or acting/singing, to a lesser extent travel, a bit of activism and law study. Just because 🤷♂️
Especially re: my last rant with *that* email from HR on Friday, I'm tempted to be a bit more strict about only doing three days and picking up something else.
Although I know the pay is awful, I really want to try bar work on the side just to do something different.
Has anyone else done bar work before?9 -
In university, would it be better to study civil engineering for my bachelor and then move to computer science for my master, or would it be better to start with computer science in the first place?
With a bachelor in civil engineering I can always go do something else if computer science doesn't turn out, but I fear that it also might be a lot harder (to study). I'd like to hear your advice on this issue.3 -
I do it pretty regularly maybe once or twice a week depends when I'm working on something interesting and want to get it done. Not very hard when you have coffee, headphones, good music, and enjoy what you do.
As for a story i don't have much of one unless you want one about implementing jwt tokens with a rest api along with trying to implement an 2FA system that would support otp and u2f. Then nuking it from orbit two days later cause it looked like garbage from trying to abstract everything -
Once upon a time I offhandedly suggested a few beautiful things that were constructed
People who were taking responsibility for the ideas who do not understand delight simple Innocent delight and a desire to see what I created before had some miniatures cheaply constructed
The desire is for things that endure in memory
All they wanted was to mechanically and immediately work on something else like it was some kind of souless side show
All I wanted was a few measly days of rest and to look over the small shadows of my ideas
This is why 99% of all new ideas suck2 -
Alright, so i've just finished debugging my laptop. I planned to do some school project however the screen of my laptop suddenly decided i had something else to do and went dark on me. Took it apart, sprayed the hinges a couple of times with some conductor fluid in the hopes it would work again and sure enough it sort of works now.
I really hope it won't crap out on my tomorrow otherwise it'll be time to find a way to get a new laptop.. -
As a person with a low grit personality, learning to program well is close to impossible. If it doesn't work in the first two or thee attempts I tend to loose interest and move on to something else. Can I do anything to help this?8
-
How do you pick a new language to learn?
I am a C# developer and at work I work on desktop apps and legacy web services etc.
I fancy learning something else so I can have a bit of variety when working on personal projects etc.
I am doing a distance learning degree which has used Java and Python so far, with some PHP and JS etc to come later.
I’m drawn to Ruby as I already have experience there, but I was also thinking about looking at Node as that covers back end and front end all using JS which is definitely useful in general as I look at moving to a more web based role.7 -
I do some freelancing on the site, make a bit of cash and it's a bit different to the day job.
It can itself be pretty dull or boring, but at least I can drop the client when the project's over and try to find something interesting.
Anyways, I'm logged into a client Google account to do some domain admin on a GSuite account. Logged into Incognito so that it doesn't interrupt my usual session.
Get a bit distracted and sidetracked, end up searching for porn... in Incognito... in the client's session! 💀
Quickly clear search history and hope that does it!
Tell me someone else has done this too??4 -
I want to start with web development and combine ESP projects with a nice interface or just to make a small websites showing algorithms in an animation. (Just as examples) But where the hell do I start. I have a background with C/C++ and python but want to develop more skills. Like do I go with react, node.js, typescript and postgres or something else? And what are the first steps I should take? If any of you got tutorials they can recommend I'd really appreciate that, because I feel like there are a ton of BS tutorials out there...3

how do you learn some concept in programming/dev? am not talking about the understanding, but rather the remembrance part, like retaining in memory in a way that you could remember to recognise/use it , the next time you see it or need it?
do you prefer :
- writing on pen and paper(ie creating notes)
- writing a personal/public online blog
- implementing it in a project that depends on it/ some sample project
- or something else?11 -
So my coworker asked for help with his work. I understand that sometimes talking about the problem with someone else will help solve the problem, but seriously, don't ask me "How do I fix this?". If you wanted me to help you fix something, go to lunch and let me work on it for a couple of hours. I can't fix something by telling you what to do. I need time to look into the problem myself, do research, and run tests on my own. Telling to do that over your shoulder is a complete waste of our time.
Also, his attitude of complete helplessness is tiring. It's hard to help someone who continually reminds you of how much he just wants to give up.2 -
What is your favorite way of advertising? Is it more technical, like "Here, thats what we have" or is it somerhing else? Oh and i do mean advertising in the context of presentations, or something like the product website4
-
Hm... Its sorta nice after another tiring day but not really feel I have to do something productive tonight... Since I already did something this morning. Anything else is now ++... And I don't feel as guilty watching TV/Just relaxing

Can you actually copy messages from a Telegram channel to another one without even being on the group and not having a bot? I'm having this client who actually made me work for this fucking bot and proceeds to tell me that he wanted something else which I'm not able to do... Like, how can you invade another channel like that? Dude what the fuck.1

Has this happened to you all too or just me?
So I was interested in a coding course and it was really long like 8 weeks, but still I started and now in the mid I just got bored of it and want to do something else.
Do comment and tell me if it has happened to you too...1 -
Does anyone else have managers who are wishywashy on how to track work? Tickets! No not that label, this epic.... Put in hours worked on a ticket, but also make sub tasks.
It is like micro management hell.
All the while all I want to do is get something done! -
Manager: Can we achieve X?
Dev: We can do with Y. But with the time that you are allocating it is difficult to complete Y.
Manager: Can we do a temporary fix?
Dev: Sure. We can do Z. But we need to prioritise Y in the next sprint else Z will cause issues in the long run.
Manager: Sure
After many next sprints,.......
Manager: Hey, Z is causing us issues regularly. Can we do something about it.
Dev: We still can do Y.
Manager: Come up with document on the implementation. We'll implement it.
Dev: Sure. Will do.2 -
