The Laptop quickly copy and paste my search term into a sketchy search website with not correct results..

Leaving a previous job, moving 1000KM (620 Miles) away with no job prospects and going absolutely broke.
This was all in the name of “I need a better job”, so what better way to force yourself to get one.
I’m currently in my second job since then and now make just over double what I was earning before.

As a frontend dev, i love watching our backend devs sometimes go like "hey come on it's just css I can do it real quick, let me do it this time" and get super frustrated with failure. Well, I made a choice in life.
I'm going to stay and work in America after I graduate. In spite of all the shit talking I've done about its work ethics, benefits, politics, and culture.
This place is still home.
After trying out a trip to Europe for a few weeks I can't handle the idea of being 4,500 miles away from family and what few friends I have. I figured out what was true the whole time: I wanted to run away from my past. Breakups, a failed marriage proposal, a dead end job that I put up with only because I need to graduate. I've been angry and depressed over these things, but running away won't fix it.
I need to face reality and own up to it. I'll get a job as a developer in the states through hell or high-water.5 -
There was this site to get prank software, one of them made the start button run away when the mouse gets near (Windows XP). Watched the IT teacher chase it around for about 5 min before he called the lab assistant to fix it6

If you're building something for a client for money, think of a killswitch.
If it requires internet anyway and you have a webserver, do something similar to what the killswitch of WannaCrypt was (but rather checking for a file on the webserver for existing/non-existing). If the client won't pay, kill the application. If the client pays, maybe even deliver a version without killswitch later (as a "bugfix")
If it is some offline project, you can check for a date (payment due date?) and also check for date/time manipulation on the system itself, and disable the killswitch via a "bugfix" version later just like above.
If clients pay, they don't have trouble. Else, they do.8 -

Who the hell gives you joining in the Diwali week. Half of the office has taken holiday so that they can go home. My orientation/induction might also get cancelled because of lack of personnel. And her i am stuck in a new city away from home for one of the major festival in India.14 -

Do not steer away from projects using technologies you may not know or be comfortable in. Instead worked your hardest to get it right, ask lots of questions and don't be insulted if people find issues in your code. It's a learning experience.

Glassdoor is the perfect example of how annoying, even just opening a website can be, first it asks for your permission to use your location, then half the screen is filled with a cookie agreement and after you clicked it all away, you get a "download our app" filling just 30% of your screen, now that you clicked that all away, you may use the website, ludicrous.

Just started as a remote dev and I found that it's IMPOSSIBLE to work from home.
Get annoyed from something not compiling/errors? Go play some video games two feet away. Nothing going your way? Go lie down on the bed behind you.
But for some reason I can work from home way better at night.

I suggested the other day that devs should not go to every meeting, actually I suggested they should be "sitting with headphones undisturbed" , everyone looked at me like this was absurd.

Worst and only experience is the reason I moved away from programming...
25 years ago I was hired to copy a phone book list to a access database.
Access back then would create lots of garbage, so I would add 3 to 5 entries before access crashed (shitty p133 laptop with 32mb ram running windows 98.
So I made a visual basic program to add data and work around the problem.
I offered said program to the guy really cheap and would still make it better.
Did also a admin module since he had hired dozens of people and I knew he would have problems peasing the databases together.
And... Dude cancels the deal.
I get a job, 2 weeks later he calls me... Ohhh I don't know how to get all the databases together...
Me: I'm working now, the program I did solved said problem. I trew the code away. Deal with it. -
People: cry how we are in an energy crysis, how expensive Li batteries are, how expensive and scarse are the resources and how wasteful the production process is
also people: pop 500mAh Li batteries in disposable e-cigs that get tossed away in the streets with ~75% of the charge left

When i was younger, lesser experienced and more naive than now; i got away with a lot of things. By lot of things i mean security flaws in my applications and overall architecture. I realise now i could've so easily been pawned.
Not that i claim to be totally secure even now, or would ever. It is a process, slow and painful one - Learning.
What i wish to point out is the role of favorable probability (non believers would call it luck). Security is so much about it. You get away with so many things for so long. And bang one day the roll of dice is unfavorable. On such rare occasions, just look back and wonder - damn i should've been breached long ago.2 -

The question "are you busy" is the most loaded fucking BS question ever. If you answer and say you're busy you get told that you aren't that busy since you answeted the chat. If you don't answer the messenger blows up your shit asking many more times and possibly even fucking calls you.
If I don't answer, I'm busy go the fuck away. "But it was super important and I needed it fixed right away!" Ok, but when I answered your message just 4 minutes after your originally messaged me don't make me spend another 5 minutes asking for information you knew I was going to ask for and could have provided in one of your follow up messages (Client name, website, page with the problem, description of the problem). Also, don't tell me that it has to get fixed because I'm the one who made the mistake. It has to get fixed because it's wrong, it doesn't fucking matter who made the mistake.3 -

Can't get over how many big companies get away with poor/no documentation for their own APIs. The past week i have been working with a large insurance company that only via email threads explained what endpoint to send files to and what username I could use to get this to work.
I also worked with a major courier service last month that only had a two page document for all their methods and one of the pages was explaining the transportation of data via imagery haha.1 -

I've found that if I get started on something, no matter how stupid it is, I will stay up all night working on something. If I try to quit, I go to bed and can't sleep because I'm still thinking about it.

In my current project I've seen this play out, initial development was very prototype-ish and just not well designed but when we got a somewhat decent state we had to continue with it instead of starting again and doing it properly. Booted up IntelliJ to find the 2018.2 update just dropped. Took me a moment to get used to the design changes they've made, especially overhauling most of the icons.
Only thing I don't like in this change is taking away the color icons from my tool windows, there was a plugin to fix it though thankfully. I need some color in my workflow!

I worked on a project that used an archaic homegrown library written by a consultant that had zero documentation, tons of reflection and here is the kicker... the consultant refused to give us the source code as it was "his intellectual property" so we couldn't make any sense of how to actually use it. Moreover, he worked remotely so the timezone difference between us meant that any questions we had took ages to get answered. Glad to be away from that project now.4

I get so irritated when i see people pirate things, i get it, they want it yeah but the fact that someone gets pissed off because i use opensource software, try collaborate and better the software and support by donating some projects. Then they try and convert me to their "copy and paste" mantra. Fuck no.
If only they knew the hours and time given up from their lives, taken away from famillies and social lives developers spend trying to make apps that alfeady makes everyones lives simpler but they dont see that, they are so use to having things given to them they wont realise hoe important it is until it was taken away.

Learning Java for the new position I start in a lil over a week. Biggest struggle migrating from PHP is wrapping strings in quotes ONLY...no apostrophes lol. I guess I formed a bad habit. Also slightly frustrating is that you can't overload a method and set defaults. I guess you get that with Kotlin but this company is going to switch away from Java to GoLang and React, so I guess I won't really get to enjoy Kotlin.

So, the other day, I was transferring some files from my phone to my girlfriend's phone via ShareIt. The size more than 1 GB. As the files started transferring, she snatched her phone away from my hand and closed the app. I was shocked and asked her why she would do something so freaky!
Her reply: "My data balance is less than 1GB. I didn't want it to get over! You should ask me before you do such things!"

Anyone else pissed off by the lack of screenshots on tutorials that tell you how to change display language on things? No?! Just me then..
Happened once or twice I needed to change display language from xy to english so I know what am I clickin.. and tutorial was all like 'go to menu tools settigs and find the language settings under advanced tab'..
No pics, nothing on how to get 'there'.. How the fuck am I supposed to get to the menu to change the language?! Oh, right, just click away and hope for the best :/ FFS!!2 -

I can find lots of resources for how to get started in your career but as I've advanced it gets harder and harder to find guidance (this is not surprising, but still lamentable). I am currently one promotion away from Senior at my company and I have no idea what to expect beyond that.

Any native app devs know if this is possible, before I go away and start messing about with shit.
I want to build a companion native app to my web app for the sole purpose of receiving in app push notifications.
So you set all the shit up on the web app and then the native app is just to get push messages. I currently send sms messages with the Twilio API but would rather the app solution.1 -
I didn't do it but one of my coworkers when he was new left his desktop unlocked while stepping away from it for a while. Another coworker changed the keyboard layout to Dvorak and locked it. The guy had to had to use his phone to look up Dvorak to get his desktop unlocked.1

Why does it have to be so difficult to get unit tests to run? Spent about an hour yesterday trying to get a single test class to run and it kept complaining about a compiler error in a completely different module. Went to the file and there was no error. WTF?!

It took me 48 hours ( not continuously) to fix a bug by going through a cluster fuck code of multiple modules. Tracing the error through 5 or 6 layers. And u dont get error logs right away. You need to recreate that error and see the logs on a kubernetes pod. Just to find out the bug was a duplicate.

Sometimes I wonder how big it companies with more then 500k net worth get away with bugs in their webapps.
In my company we also have bugs but I am the only dev and we won't hit the 100k Salesmark with our software.3 -

The way to avoid procrastination is to understand and use what your mind is trying to do - give itself instant gratification.
I use this method:
Step 1: Prepare your workspace in every way possible.
Step 2: Leave. Go do something fun for 20 minutes or so (yes, procrastinate on purpose). Get your mind calmed down and get rid of the anxieties about starting by just not starting.
Step 3: Sit down in your prepped environment, free of distractions and with a calmed mind, and pick a task to start hacking away at. -
Hours away for 2016 to come to an end and I still can't decide if I should finally finish my side project or get more sleep.

Am I the only one that feels like the development and software engineering will loose the high paying benefit soon? Remote work normalised hiring developers from farther away. I've been approached by quite a few recruiters that want to hire from much farther away then usual. It seems like only a question of time untill most of the things will be outsourced to third world countries where developers get paid basically nothing. Sure they were usually a worse choice in the past, but it always gets better with time. I'm sure that there are a lot of vry smart wngineers there. Why pay your developer 50-90k/year when you can pay 10k/yr for two developers in India?
We're also automating ourselves out of jobs with all these no code platforms. Thoughts?8 -

I'm looking for a new laptop: which one is supported out-of-the-box by Ubuntu based Linux distros like Elementary OS?
Why Elementary OS you ask? Well, I want to move away from macOS and/but keep the minimal (and pretty) design/interface!
But: I don't want to waste time configuring stuff after install or a kernel update. I don't have time for that: I need to get shit done.
As much as I dislike closed source/evil corporate stuff the fact of the matter is that my MacBook Pro Just Works (and lets me get shit done).3 -

You can't wait until things are perfect. You have to launch imperfectly, but with confidence that you'll get where you need to be. But then imposter syndrome sets in. Self doubt tells us we don't belong.

One reason I hate working on hardware and prefer software. Spent all weekend trying to get this Canon photo printer to work with a raspberry pi for a photo booth project. Tried multiple cables, compiling the latest cups and gutenprint, etc. Only could get it to print via wifi. Finally, I go to the store and buy a new micro USB cable and it works right away. 😠2

Your developers would write down every single thing they did in nice and easily quantifiable units of work, with then they did it exactly to the minute, and with CI/CD patches could be released directly after being tested. And tests mean the devs even safe some QA time.2 -

Ya boy is now officially an intern! I'm starting next week, everything is sorted except one thing: we have to bring our own computers and basically get to use whatever software we want. I've got a fresh install of Mint and was wondering what IDEs or editors everybody here uses (and recommends), since I only really have a bit of experience with Atom and Netbeans, and I don't think I'll be able to get away with coding in Notepad++ or Gedit here.12 -

C++ everyone else has to use types so you can get away with auto and the compiler will tell you when you've done something wrong. Python, nobody else has to use types so type everything and let the static checker tell them when they've done something wrong so they don't pester you. -

I am not so sure about what I am going to do after high school.
I have been working part time as a backend web developer, and I think that the experience combined with my profound interest in the subject has made me quite good for my age.
I also took part in national and international coding competitions.
I am writing all this to prove that, although I am no genius, I have a decent enough curriculum to get a job as soon as I am out.
The problem is, (please save your insults for later) I want to be a Java developer. I just love the syntax, the and the code just forms in my head better than the other languages.
Up until a few years ago I wanted to go to uni and get a 5 year degree in computer science - and I would still like to do so if it is going to help me get away from web development, and I would get lear lots of cool stuff in the mean time.
My question is: should I study computer science?
If I don't get, I could go choose engineering with computer science focus in another uni, but should I? Should I just get my job to full time and wait the next year?
Will studying in uni get me a better paying job, or some sort of tangible improvement over just working right away?
I am very interested to hear your opinions, and sorry for the long post :)2 -
I've been trying to dual boot Linux with Windows 10, but the installer isn't detecting my main drive. I've heard it's because my SATA mode is on RAID and I need to change it to AHCI, but is there a way that I can get away without doing that?2
