A client called
Client: Hello Mr. Can you come to our office today?
Me: Yes sure
In fews hours I was there
Client: Check this email we are getting every day
It was email from spammers who asking to redesigning their website because it was not responsive
Me: 🧐Thinking ‘valid point !’
Me: So what you need me to do for you then?
Client: We need you to redesign the site
Lol - thanks spammers for bringing in new client12 -
Let's quickly talk about idiots.
> A simpleton coworker of mine installed Ubuntu on his brand new ThinkPad with a touch screen.
> Asks me to show him the Linux games site I mentioned earlier.
> I see that he has no browser installed.
No Firefox, Chromium, Epiphany, etc.
> Now I know that he has a room temperature IQ and something moronic is going to happen.
Truth be said, I subliminally desired a terminal based browser.
> Then he fucking opens Wine and I shit you NOT! That thundercunt opens...
> Internet Explorer!
> I punched his screen.
> No longer a touch-screen laptop.17 -
Client: I know other developers who would do the same and much more for much less.
Me: I am glad you chose to work with me instead.
Client: I mean I like the site but I still feel that the development process has taken longer than it should have.
Me: Well, it is within the time frame I had said I would be able to have the first version of the site running. I have also implemented quite a number of new features that we had not earlier agreed on.
Client: I think I'll pay (quotes less than 20% of the total cost ).
Me: That is less than the amount that you were to pay as the first instalment ages ago!!
Client: I mean I like the site, but I think it still lacks the X factor. I want ...*goes on to mention other features*
Me: While I take pride in making my clients happy, I believe this process should be mutually beneficial. You are constantly making requests for new features but are making no attempts to meet your end of the agreement.
Client: FYI, there are people begging me for this job.
Me: *Takes down the site.* I wish you all the best, I hope the other developers are up to your standards.
Client: *Literally ignoring the fact that I just quit*. I want (makes more requests).
I am simply going to ignore this one!!!!14 -
My boss literally spends half an hour finger-fucking his phone on the mobile site to find "bugs", that I can't replicate. A combination like: swipe, pinch, landscape, portrait, back pinch, open new tab, close tab, ash cigarette on phone, dunk in toilet, dry, double tap... Aha I've found a bug, there's 0.5 pixel line of space between the bag header and the browser bar.14
-
Client: why hasnt anything been done for the new site?
Me: because you never paid for the last one thats been put into production
Client: yeah but that was a smaller simple site. I need this one up and done already
Me: it'll be worked on when I get paid for my previously worked time for you.
Client: but that was a month ago. I don't understand why you are asking for payment now
Me: because you never paid me for last months work!!
Client: but its may now
Me: holy shit, -clients name-, I know very well what month it is and dont need a lesson. I also know better than to work for free. I have bills to pay just like you and everyone else so until you have paid the last invoice, I'm not lifting a finger for you. That includes answering your calls
Client: oh well why didnt you just say that to begin with
Motherfucking fuck people are horrid and dumb and make me violent6 -
My company needs a new Website.
ME: Boss, let me do it. It's just a simple static site with a few pages. **Dreaming about a fast and beautiful site**
BOSS: Your time is too valuable. Nobody is paying us for our website. The apprentice will do it.
Few weeks later... Wordpress page! Page loads in > 20sec. Over 150 request for css and js... It's fast on Mobile, because it just breaks and loads only half of the content.
So ashamed working in this Company. No sane customer will ever do business with us, when he sees this stackpile of shit.6 -

Well. My life is over. I got punchy and accidentally deleted a client’s entire site. Backups and all. Wasn’t paying attention to which specific delete feature I was using and POOF. It’s all gone.
The worst part? I was actually just trying to delete a staging site where I was trying out some stuff to try to win a site redesign contract. Now it looks like I’ll be paying THEM for damages and/or building them a new site for FREE.
I’m so done.27 -
Let me preface this by saying I'm not a designer.
While I can make individual bits of a site look good, and I'm actually pretty skilled with CSS/Sass, overall design completely escapes me. I can't come up with good designs, nor do I really understand *why* good designs are good. It's just not something I can do, which feels really weird to say. but it's true.
So, when I made the Surfboard site (that's the project's internal name), I hacked everything together and focused on the functionality, and later did a branding and responsive pass. I managed to make the site look quite nice, and made it scale well across sizes/devices despite being completely new to responsiveness. (I'm proud, okay? deal.)
After lots of me asking (in response to people loudly complaining that the UI doesn't have X feature, scale properly on Y device, and doesn't look as good as Z site), the company finally reached out to its UI contractor who does their design work. After a week or two, he sent a few mockups.
The mockups consisted of my existing design with a darker background, much better buttons, several different header bars (a different color) with different logo/text placements, and several restyled steppers. He also removed a couple of drop shadows and made some very minor styling changes (bold text, some copy edits). Oh, he also changed the branding colors. Nothing else changed. It's basically the same exact site but a few things look a little better. and the branding is different.
My intermediary with the designer asked for "any feedback before finalizing the designs" -- which I thought odd because he sent mocks for two out of the ten pages (nine plus a 404 page). (Nevermind most of the mocks showed controls from the wrong page...).
So, I typed up a full page of feedback. Much of it was asking for specifics such as responsive sizing on the new header layout, how the new button layout would work for different button counts, asking for the multitude of missing pages/components, asking why the new colors don't match the rest of our branding, etc. I also added a personal nitpick about flat-looking controls because I fucking hate them. Everything I wrote was very friendly and professional.
... His response was full of gems. Let me share a few.
1. "Everything about the current onboarding site looks like a complete after-thought." (After submitting a design basically identical to mine! gg!)
2. "Yes [the colors match our current branding]." (No. They don't. I checked. The dark grey is different, the medium grey is different, the silver is different, the light blue is different. He even changed the goddamn color of the goddamn LOGO for fuck's sake! How the fuck is that "matching"?!)
3. "Appreciate the feedback [re: overlapping colored boxes, aka 'flat'], design is certainly subjective. However, this is the direction we are going." (yet it differs from the rest of our already-redesigned sites you're basing this off. and it's ugly as shit. gg again :/)
4. "Just looked at the 404 page. It looks pretty bad, and reflects very poorly on the [brand name] brand. Definitely will make a change here!" (Hey! I love that thing. It's a tilted, dotted outline of a missing [brand product] entirely drawn with CSS. It has a light gray "???" underlay and some 404 text inside. Everyone I showed it to, coworkers and otherwise, loved it. "Looks pretty bad". fuck you.)
I know I shouldn't judge someone so quickly, but what the fuck. This guy reminds me of one of those pompous artists/actors who's better than everyone and who can never be wrong, even while they're contradicting themselves.
just.

So you build a beautiful site; you spend good time on UX, refactoring, server optimisation, getting good page load speeds, SQL all optimised - life is good.
Commercial team comes in and slaps clickbait, generic advertising, tracking scrips over the lot.
Page loads go from a second to 30 seconds and even though you made sure all those crappy ad scripts are asynchronous pages still hang most times. PingdomTools lists your page scripts as going from 40 files to over 900... now users are ringing me up giving me grief about how slow this new company website is...5 -
New client wanted us to redo their site and boost their SEO because "nobody has ever used our contact form".
Looking at their current site, turns out their contact form is POSTed to an HTML page, that obviously does 0 processing on it. Like tossing it on the trash bin.
Their current website is done by a company that claim they're experts on web design for our clients sector.
Still haven't stopped laughing.7 -
(The PM is pretty technical)
One day:
Me: Could you create this subdomain?
PM: Sure, just a sec.
Me: Ohh and could you add a letsencrypt cert? (one click thingy)
PM: Why would you need that on this kinda site...
Me: Well in general for security...
PM: Nahh.
*walks away*
Next day:
(referring to my internship manager/guider as Bob)
Bob: Hey... we have a new subdomain!
Me: Yup!
Bob: Wait why is there no letsencrypt certificate installed...?!?
Me: Well, the PM didn't find that neccesary...
Bob: (Oo) of course it is... are we going for security by default or what?
Me: Yup agreed.
Bob: *creates cert and sets everything up in under a minute*
It wasn't a high profile site (tiny side project) but why not add SSL when you can for free?8 -
Q: Your data migration service from old site to new site cost money.
A: Yes, I have to copy data from old database and import to the new one.
Q: Can I just provide you content separately so you don’t need to do that?
A: Yes, but I will have to charge you for copying and pasting your 100 pages of content manually.
Q: Can it come with part of the web development service and not as an additional service?
A: Yes, but the price for web development service will have to be increased to combine the two. If you don’t want to pay for it, I can just set up a few sample pages with the layout and you can handle your own content entry. Does that work for you?
Q: Well, but then I will have to spend extra time to work on it.
A: Yes you will. (At this point I think she starts to understand the concept of Time = Money...)3 -
I’m doing this guys website for FREE. As a favor to my mom. This is the shit I have to deal with as thanks.

Apparently, part of being a software engineer means knowing how to read minds and do other people's jobs.
While implementing a user story for marketing, we found some associated features that, according to the database, have not been used for years. We tell them this. We do the courtesy of asking, "Hey, is there anything on the site that is utilizing these features? We'd like to clean up the DB."
"We don't know."
Engineering suggests, "Ok, lets turn the feature off, then, and see if anyone complains. It's been years according to the DB."
Marketing gets angry and hostile and says, "That's not the way to do things!"
I don't vocalize, "Well, not knowing how to do your own damned job is not the way to do things."
-
Marketing asks us to integrate a third party feature to the site. We ask, "Ok, what page do you want it on, and what information do you want to collect, and what should it look like?"
"I don't know. You're engineering. You tell us."
We implement it as best we can.
Marketing says, "HEY! This isn't done right! It's missing this and this and this!"
"Did you ask us to implement that? According to the user story, it passes acceptance criteria."
Marketing says, "I thought you would just know that! I didn't know it was a separate thing. Just put it on all the pages, then. You guys really should know the site better."
Engineering gets angry and hostile
-
Marketing says, "We need this removed from the site."
Engineering replies, "We have a GUI for that. Just go to this URL and you can do it yourself."
Marketing replies, "Well, if that's a really complicated thing, can you just run a script against the DB?"
Engineering says, "If we've built a UI for you, we really shouldn't be executing SQL scripts directly against the DB."
Marketing gets angry and hostile.
-
Engineering tries asking nicely.
"Marketing, if you want us to add new stuff to the site, or change stuff, please tell us what it is and where it should go and what the customer experience should be like."
Marketing replies, "We don't know the site that well. We are leaning on you to tell us."
I do not vocalize, all while trying to keep my eyes from bulging out of my head, my face red with rage, "YOU ARE IN CHARGE OF SELLING SHIT ON A WEBSITE THAT YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT. YOU ARE ASKING FOR CHANGES TO SOMETHING YOU DON'T EVEN UNDERSTAND. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?"
Engineering is angry and hostile.3 -

I hate Wordpress. I hate Wordpress. I hate Wordpress.
Wordpress can take a big shit on itself and crawl into a deep dark hole far away from all that is good.
Who even uses Wordpress? Bloggers? Come on, let’s be honest, they’re using more intuitive sites like weebly, wix, and square space. So WHAT is Wordpress for? I’ll tell you, it’s just to FUCKING TORTURE PEOPLE.
So, being the “techy guy” of the family, a relative contacts me asking for some help with their website because they need to install an SSL certificate but they don’t know how to. I tell them I’d gladly do it because, sure, they’re family and how long can it possibly take to install a certificate? I’ve done it before!
Well, I get to work and log into the sluggish Wordpress dashboard and try to use a plugin that would issue a LetsEncrypt certificate because they are free and just as good as any other SSL. But one plugin after the next I keep getting errors about how my hosting wouldn’t allow it.
So I contact GoDaddy (don’t get me fucking started) and ask them about the issue. The guy tells me it’s “policy” to only be able to use GoDaddy’s certificates. How much do they cost? Oh, how about $100 a year?! Fuck you.
I figured out the only way to escape this hell was to ask them to open an economy Linux hosting account with cPanel on GoDaddy (the site was formerly hosted on a “Managed Wordpress” account which is just bullshit for not wanting to give you any control over your own goddamn content). So now I have to deal with migrating the site.
GoDaddy representative tells me that it should only take 20 minutes for me to do this (I’ve already spent way too much time on this but whatever) so I go forward with the new account. I decide I should migrate the site by exporting a backup and manually placing everything on the new server. Doesn’t it end up taking an entire hour to back up a 200MB site because GoDaddy throttled the processing speed?!
So, it’s another hour later and I’ve installed all the databases and carried over all the files. At this point, I’m really at the end of my rope and can’t wait to install the certificate and be done with this fuckery.
I install the certificate and finally get ready to be on my way, but then I see it. A warning. A warning from my browser telling me the site is only partially secure. It turns out the certificate was properly installed but whoever initially made the site HARDCODED ALL THE LINKS to images, websites, and style sheets to be http instead of https.
I’m gonna explode.
I swear, I’m gonna fucking explode.
After a total of 5 hours of work, I finally get the site secure by using search and replace on every fucking file.
Wordpress can go suck a big one. Actually, Wordpress can go suck the largest fuckin one in existence and choke on it.
TL;DR I agree to install an SSL certificate but end up with much more work than I bargained.38 -

Client: I saw this feature on a site and I want it on mine.
Me: I’m almost done with the project. You can’t possibly expect me to start adding new features now.
Client: Just go online and copy the code. I won’t take that long. It shouldn’t be difficult if you’re a professional.
WTF is wrong with people. The worlds gone to shit. Who does he think he is?13 -
So yesterday our team got a new toy. A big ass 4k screen to display some graphs on. Took a while to assemble the stand, hang the TV on that stand, but we got there.
So our site admin gets us a new HDMI cable. Coleague told us his lappy supports huge screens as he used to plug his home TV in his work lappy while WFHing. He grabs that HDMI, plugs one end into the screen, another - into his lappy and
.. nothing...
Windows does not recognize any new devices connected. The screen does not show any signs of any changes. Oh well..
Site IT admin installs all the updates, all the new drivers, upgrades BIOS and gives another try.
Nothing.
So naturally the cable is to blame. The port is working for him at home, so it's sure not port's fault. Also he uses his 2-monitor setup at work, so the port is 100% working!
I'm curious. What if..... While they are busy looking for another cable, I take that first one, plug it into my Linux (pretty much stock LinuxMint installation w/ X) lappy,
3.. 2.. 1..
and my desktop is now on the big ass 4k fat screen.
Folks. Enough bitching about Linux being picky about the hardware and Windows being more user friendly, having PnP and so. I'm not talking about esoteric devices. I'm talking about BAU devices that most of home users are using. A monitor, a printer, a TV screen, a scanner, wireless/usb speaker/mouse/keyboard/etc...
Linux just works. Face it
P.S. today they are still trying to make his lappy work with that TV screen. No luck yet.17 -
My favorite client just brought in a new team member who thinks he's god's gift to web development and design. Every week he gives me a long list of things he thinks are wrong with the website.
Now he's cloning pages of the site and adding hideously distorted images and excel screenshots of information matrices formatted the way he wants them. And he wants them published as he has made them because his ideas are obviously the best ones! (guess who he voted for)
He also claims that nobody can figure out how to purchase anything on the site, including him! Even after I've made it so you'd have to be frickin' Helen Keller not to be able to stumble over a BIG FAT BUY NOW BUTTON literally everywhere you look because this site is for geriatric senile MORONS who can't click their way out of a paper bag!!!5 -
"Why do you think we should delay launching the new site?"
Because it's late afternoon on a Friday.
"So? What does it matter?"
Here's a bunch of good reasons.
"Nah let's do it today anyways."3 -
Spent 6 hours today trying to figure out why the CSS got all jacked up on a site right before launch.
Turns out, the new college grad who went to school for front end development doesn't know how to specify elements at all.
They made all their edits using the broadest selectors possible, sometimes at the tag level.
Having never looked at the site or mock-ups I had no idea what it was supposed to look like so I spent a lot of time waiting for people to tell me whether things were fixed, and telling what else was broke.
Good thing their college degree means they make 20% more than me.12 -

This dev goes "I connect using plain FTP over a VPN to update why can't you!?"

End of second week at a new job. Found what I thought was a bug and wanting to impress I fixed it. The dev reviewing my code had just started a week before me so he also had no idea what was going on. It went live Friday afternoon.
Come back Monday morning and turns out I completely broke everything and nobody could use the site all weekend. I thought I was done for sure. Was shitting myself all day waiting for the call.

So ehm, tl;dr: KEEP DAILY BACKUPS. EVEN IF SOMEONE SAYS NOT TO.
7:48
Manager: Hey Tom, is the server down?
Me: Nah, should be ok, I just did some maintenance this sunday.
Manager: But I can't get [some work data from SQL server]
*Nervous giggle*
9:14: Some random off-site cunt they hired didn't read the notes that said "DO NOT REMOVE DATABASE [xyz]"
9:20-ish: Web don't even have the DB. And you said that we'll figure out what to do with backups later
*Suddenly manager starts to panic*
11:47: Found backup of the entire server on and old server that we had for spare parts, still running tho.
12:something: Everything back up and working.
Really glad I kept the old server running and doing daily backups. Saved our ass for the second time. And finally, new off-site backup is planned this week.3 -

The only hacked sites I had to fix were running on ... [prepare your stomach] ... Joomla.
I'm not sure if there is even one single solid developer for Joomla. This shit piece has more vulnerabilities than a crack hobo infested with pest-ebola-hyperAIDS.
The sites were full of hidden viagra and pr0n ads and links so the crawlers would list them.
Luckily for me, I was able to pursuade the clients in all 3 cases to build a new site from scratch on a different CMS.2 -
Before 10 years, a WordPress site hacked with sql injection. They had access to site, they modified many php files and installed commands to download random malwares from over the internet.
At first I didn't know that it hacked and I was trying to remove any new file from the server. That was happening every 1-2 days for a week.
Then I decided to compare every WordPress file with the official, it was too many files, and I did it manually notepad side notepad!! :/
Then I found about over 50 infected files with the malware code.
Cleaned and finished my job.
No one else knows that I did a lot of hard job.2 -
HOW FUCKING HARD CAN IT BE TO NOT STORE PASSWORDS IN CLEARTEXT AND THEN PROCEED TO SEND ME AN UNENCRYPTED EMAIL WITH THE PASSWORD IN IT??? I work at a school and am involved in building the new website. Specifically as an ex Web developer myself I am acting as intermediary between the leadership team and the company we have hired to build the site. The company has a "the customer is always right" approach and will do what they are asked for so my main role is stopping the school from making stupid requests.
For example yesterday they complained that the site looked different on mobile compared to desktop. Then they complained that the (long paragraph) welcome message appeared below the menu and quick links on mobile instead of above them (forcing users to scroll down to get to navigation controls). After many more complaints and mind boggling suggestions, and my attempts to explain responsive design and reducing cognitive load, I left the meeting with a headache and an urge to spend the next three hours drowning Lara Croft.
The most difficult part of any developers role: not throwing the keyboard at the client every time they say something stupid.1 -
Received a new client.
"Hi can you help me redesign my website?"
Me: "Sure what's your sites URL?"

In ancient times, a friend and I made a new website for a golf course, in exchange for free golf whenever we wanted it. We were traveling to Texas for work(we were Linux sysadmins for a defense contractor at the time) and found out that mechanical/logistic issues at the airport in Houston would delay our departure by two hours, but this wasn't until after the plane was fully boarded and had begun to taxi. So we sat on the tarmac at Kansas City Airport for two hours with nothing to do but release that website. We finished some perl hooks to site resources, and pushed the site live. This was on a laptop tethered to a phone with a CDMA data connection, before even EVDO was released.
Even so, it went great! I sshed into the server(running netBSD), swung over the necessary tags, and the site was up.
My workflow today is largely the same, just with git and a more elaborate .vimrc.10 -

Got my new apartment and now need it hooked up.
So my dad (an experience developer) messages me and says the new apartment uses Verizon FiOS, $80 a month for TV + Gigabit internet
Well I checked the site and I see there's another plan: internet only at 50mbps... for $40
So I'm like "are you stupid?"
I don't need TV. If I really want, I'll just stream TV using THEIR login
And I don't need transfer speeds of 125 MB/s.... I ain't an online PVP gaming monkey
4MB/s is good enough...35 -
Client had our company build them a site, they refused our hosting suggestions, and did not want any maintenance on their site.
They eventually left us as a client all together(they were getting other services so they occasionally got an edit or two) and sent several rude emails to delete their passwords so we wouldn't have access to their stuff anymore. I gladly gave the site over to the new company with a solid "good luck." I wanted nothing to do with this client anymore anyway.
Now I'm 9 months down the line and my AM sends me an email that the client wants maintenance. I'm already typing up a ranting email to tell them no, when I decide to check the site. There are WordPress php errors all over the site.
Idk what this other company did, but I want nothing to do with cleaning up someone else's screwups. If I were freelance, this would be a HUGE up charge.7 -
Back when I was in school, there was me, these 2-3 other guys, we maintained the school's sites + graphics and what not. If there was a problem, we could solve it. The school hosted big events and the site had over 50k hits in 2 days.
We used PHP then (was a new thing then for us)
Was looking at the schools site now out of nostalgia,
THE SHIT DOESNT EVEN SCALE WELL.
Graphics look like they were made using MS Paint.

One of my old clients apparently had a question about their site. Turns out that they tracked me down on LinkedIn, and called my new company's public line just to see if I would be available to help them out.
Fortunately the new powers that be took that one in their strides..3 -
So my host of choice decided to migrate an old site to a new set of IPs without warning yesterday, down side to a VPS I guess.
Now this wouldn’t be an issue if it wasn’t on a dedicated IP you wankers.
DNS won’t resolve to new location yet and Virtual hosts contained the old IPs and for some fuck of a reason the httpd file is auto generated 😡so updating it will be lost on reboot.
Like What the flying fuck you imbeciles, this site has been up and running for 5+ years on this IP.
I barely do any maintenance for t as it’s just an old horse sitting on the web but fuck you don’t need to fuck with it or atleast give some fucking warning before you go drop it offline 😡1 -
An adult cam website I worked on as freelancer had/has this code everywhere:
$user = $_POST['usr'];
$pass = $_POST['pwd'];
$row = $db->query ("SELECT * FROM users where username='".$user."' AND password='".$pass."' COUNT 1);
I was hired to add new features and was touch any other parts of the code. When my job was done, I tried to fix those as a good samaritan but the client thought I was messing with the system or should be thing of new features to add. So I got fired.
5 years later, I check out of curiosity and they are still there. I ask him again if I can work on them for a little less pay(I'm broke) and he doesn't reply. What a douche. I hope his site receives a shot of SQLi from a customer.18 -
Freelance client fired me on Friday, with literally a couple of minor issues to take care of left before launch. When I inquired, he said they're going in a different direction. I immediately smelled bullshit. When I asked who to turn over the files and DB to, it was their idea to allow me to broker the deal to switch things over and hand the keys over. I asked the new dev what framework or installed CMS and he thought I was crazy for asking. He told me they're taking by build of the site and finishing it. That's fucking low.4

Had a configure issue on a site running through CloudFlare hosted at WPEngine. Support on chat guy says "can I take a look at your setup" so I screenshot him! He says they're are new ways to point to WPEngine whilst using SSL so I say OK and he points me to a support article which seems accurate. He then says now I want you to change two records so I say ok (not thinking) which I do (stupidly)
Result site no longer reachable.
What do I do now? He says very seriously "you need to wait 24-48 hours for the DNS to propogate"
"Your joking it's a huge site with 20k visitors per day with advertisers on it"
"I'm sorry there is nothing I can do until the DNS YOU changed has propagated"
"I changed?" "Yes you changed the CloudFlare settings"
"You told me to!"
"Is there anything else I can help you with?"7 -
Client:
Monday: change the color of a button
Tuesday: change the top of home page
Wednesday: insert new image on site
Thursday: change the text

WHY YOU DONT ASK ALL CHANGES ONE TIME????6 -
Oracle really need to hire a new front-end web developer. Their site is not very beautiful, especially their JavaFX documentation sites.7

My first ever post! So awesome to find out dev rant and cheer up my day as I go thru everyone's story/rant.
I was single the whole time while I'm at school. After graduated, I finally pick up the pace to date girls. So I signed up for a few online dating sites/apps. Every single time that I create a new profile for the app/site, I always get frustrated and confused about the language field. Especially when there's only selector or check box for languages selections.
Like, where's JavaScript, PHP, HTML5, Css3, Ruby, on the selector or check box. I think a suggestions to those dating site/app dev needs to rethink the options for language selections. At least try to let us developers have a better profile than normal people! :-/13 -
Im back to anyone that may cared a little, so I was offline for 6 days since my ISP Ultra Hilarious to crash my state records of their paying customers and some other stuff that It took 5ever to get back, anything you guys want to share with me that may happen lately here on DevRant? I personally my classic Amazon bashing news and Perhaps giving away some Steam Keys that one Reviewer user of my site give us out to promote the site along side the devs.
For the Amazon News there is:
Amazon in talks to buy cybersecurity startup Sqrrl and also group of New Jersey Amazon Warehouse workers stood in the cold outside an Amazon Books store in Manhattan on Wednesday to remind shoppers that their online purchases are made possible by warehouse employees who often are underpaid and denied normal workplace benefits. On my first week in the internship, I have to create a small website and it has to be finished ASAP. So I used Bootstrap.
After finishing I tested the website in chrome debugger tools for every screen size (design responsiveness), it was working fine. My stupidity was that I haven't tested on actual mobile/tablet.
The site was live, I send the link to one of my friends and he said "why everything is so small? looks like I'm browsing on PC". I quickly grab my phone and visited the site and it was not responsive on mobile. Started to check the code again, tested again on chrome tools it was working. But not on mobile. Changed the bootstrap file but no fucking changes on mobile.
After few moments of thinking, I realized that I haven't included the "meta viewport" tag. I felt so stupid and it was kind of embarrassing for me.
Now I first include meta tags before working on new project.5 -
Whenever someone leaves their computer unlocked (and if they're using Chrome/Chromium), one of us will install the Cenafy plugin. It has a 1 in 100 chance of redirecting you to a site that plays the John Cena theme any time you load a new page. Trouble is, the tune is so damn addictive I spend the rest of the day humming it.3
-
Updated a website for an older client today. Realized I originally wrote their website in 2002.
That web site is a fucking non-responsive piece of shit... but it is still running normally after 18 years.
Just HTML/CSS and some light JS/PHP for form processing. It's not fancy but it still performs and works perfect on Desktop and OK on mobile. Mobile devices which DID NOT EXIST when I wrote it.
Let this be a lesson to the entire new class of developers who seems to think you need some framework to develop. You don't. And I GUARANTEE if that site used any framework that framework would have been retired or updated to un-useability 10 years ago.
Meanwhile my LAMP ass "web native" shit spaghetti with ZERO DEPENDENCIES is still just chugging the fuck along.4 -
Just stumbled across this gem last night. You guys know how biggest online games site in my country (also backed up by largest ISP) handles reset password requests?
After clicking "Forgot password", it asks you to login to Gmail (cause everyone is assumed to have and use one, right?) and then opens "New Email" window prefilled with some template data which you're expected to finish (in screenshot below).
And I just wanted to play some Ludo with my friends.. 🙄🙈2 -
I work as the entire I.T. department of a small business which products are web based, so naturally, I do tech support in said website directly to our clients.
It is normal that the first time a new client access our site they run into questions, but usually they never call again since it is an easy website.
There was an unlucky client which ran into unknown problems and blamed the server.
I couldn't determine the exact cause, but my assumption was a network error for a few seconds which made the site unavailable and the user tried to navigate the site through the navbar and exited the process he was doing. It goes without saying but he was very angry.
I assured him there was nothing wrong with the site, and told him that it would not be charged for this reason. Finally i told him that if he had the same problem, to let me know instead of trying to fix it himself.
The next time he used the site I received a WhatsApp message saying:
- there is something clearly wrong with the site... It has been doing this for so long!
And attached was a 10 second video which showed that he filled a form and never pressed send (my forms have small animations and text which indicates when the form is being send and error messages when an error occurs, usually not visible because the data they send is small and the whole process is quite fast)
To which I answer
- It seems that the form has not been send that's why it looks that way
- So... What an I supposed to do?
- click send
It took a while but the client replied
- ok
To this day I wonder how much time did the client stared at the form cursing the server. -
Holy FREAKING shit!! This was worst stupidest mistake I have ever made!
About 9 hours ago, i decided to implement brotli compression in my server.
It looked a bit challenging for me, because the all the guides involved compiling and building the nginx with brotli module and I was not that confident doing that on live site.
By the end of the guide, the site was not reachable anymore. I panicked.
Even the error logs and access logs were not picking up anything.
About a dozens guides and a new server and figuring out few major undocumented errors later, it turns out the main nginx.conf file had a line that was looking for *.conf files in the sites-enabled directory.
But my conf file was named after the domain name and ending with .com and hence were not picked up by the new nginx.conf
I'm not sure if I wasted my 9 hours because of that single line or not. But man, this was a really rough day!3 -
Recently I got an E-Mail from PayPal.de with the headline "Your account gets limited". Fun Fact: I don't have a PayPal account.
This Mail got me curious though, as it couldn't be a phishing mail, since I don't have a PayPal account in the first place, so I opened the e-mail just to get greeted by pure emptiness. It was completely empty. I thought to myself "oh no, is this some sort of new trick? Did I get infected by some sort of a weird hacky backdoor trojan already?!"
Name: PayPal.de
Original E-mail Address: NULL (never seen this before)
I then realized, that Thunderbird blocked the only content from this mail: a clickable image.
This is getting even more confusing the longer I examine this unique mail. The image is showing me a domain from a site completely unrelated from PayPal, so it was obviously no phishing, but I didn't trust this clickable image, so I looked up its hidden link to find an even more confusing redirection to not a picture upload site like the image suggests, but to a game key reselling site instead, like wtf? What was the whole point of this whole e-mail? Was this a weird try to make advertisements for more than one website? It wasn't even a ref-link or something like that. It was just weird, iunno.8 -
Hello, I'm new to devRant. This is amazing and I really want to see what more this site has to offer.9

Send over the entire directory for a WordPress site we completely overhauled with new plugins, custom theme, redid content with visual composer, etc. I tell him to backup his site and then put everything I give you as fresh. He tells me he can't just wipe out his entire site that's unacceptable. I ask him what's the problem? he rambles on and says a lot of words that don't really mean anything then says security. so I call him out on it, what security issues do you have? well we have users and permissions setup he says. I explain That I copied his users table over when we did the redesign, so it's the exact same stuff. so I say again, why can't we just replace everything? well that's just not acceptable he says. I ask him again, what EXACTLY is your problem with replacing the site since I already addressed your security concern. he couldn't answer me so now we have another conference call tomorrow morning with more people from their team. I'll let you know how it goes.
tldr; clients are idiots, call them out for the dumb shit they say and have no response.7 -
I just remembered something I did like freshman year of high school lol
So our school system had just adopted a new site blocking program. It did even better than the one we had used before it.
Literally every good site to play games was blocked, and it really pissed me the fuck off. I had an easy class that was in a lab, and I finished my work early literally everyday, so I played the games to kill time.
Finally I got fucking fed up, and I made a site using weebly where I put the games I wanted to play on it. This way I was in control of it, and I had all the game files on a flash drive, so if it got blocked, I could just keep making new ones.
It actually got to the point that after a week, a few of my friends were using the site daily as well, and they kept asking for games to be put on it.
Simpler times man, simpler times.2 -
When the company you work for decides to install a new firewall and the firewall service recognizes stack overflow as a forum site and blocks it.... :/3
-
Yay, I have to rewrite + design a 15-20 year old website 🎉
Originally written in, God knows what version of php, HTML and JS by a Java dev, and patched every other year when something broke or a new feature was needed, every time by someone new...
Some years ago the system was moved from a Windows host to Ubuntu and that was a nightmare in its own, because of all the hard-coded paths...
Welp, at least some fucker found another fucker who is willing to create a new design for the site, so that's off my plate...5 -
It was an intern job for 2.5$ /h. I removed a bunch of technical debt, made their modx site localized (with a weird approach though but hey, I was an intern) and wrote a few new pages. I loved every minute of working there until the end, but had it lasted a bit longer than a month I'd have probably burned the place to the ground when I realized that my friends had earned twice as much at McDonalds and I could've earned about the same amount writing one excel macro a day.4
-
Hertz the car rental company wanted a new website. They hired accenture. Accenture did allegedly a poor job. The site did not come with responsiveness, not with web components and 2 years over deadline. Hertz sues Accenture for $38+ million.
Scope creep deluxe?9 -
> worst coding procrastination story
worst and best at the same time:
If you wait long enough things might resolve themselves.
My team inherited an ancient site. Hosted on an old host that the org wanted to kill, using an old log service the org wanted to kill.
A ticket was written in 2021 to migrate that site's hosting and logging to the new services our org started using.
My team kept avoiding it since it was a cheap unimportant site.
in 2023 we were about to finally take action - then we hear "Turns out the new hosting platform and logging platform are way too expensive - I know all of you have migrated to these new services but you gotta revert and go back the old ones til we figure this out"
We didn't have to do squat.
Problem solved by procrastinating ✅1 -
Client asks to point their domain to a new 'squarespace' they just got, then call you bc they cannot access the admin console to their old site and 'it's so weird that all the requests are now going to squarespace !!'1
-
You want me to build a whole fucking site with a new theme on December with no mockups and all build with a custom design after you left me all fucking September and october without fucking work?.
No. Fucking. Way.1 -
When I arrived at my new job last year they were working on developing a large site using a live server with all the devs ftp-ing every change in the build process to test it. 😵
It was not uncommon to hear 'is anybody in the style sheet?' being shouted across the office!
Needless to say, I had to fix many bugs multiple times when my fixes were overwritten!7 -
About a decade ago there was a torrent site for audiobooks audiobookbay I think?, if you forgot your password to your username they would literally just give you a new password on the next page. Naturally being a 1337H4X0R teenager I found the username of one of the admins and got into their account on the site. I don't know if they ever fixed that but that was a serious wtf moment.
Edit: just checked this flaw has not been patched.8 -
me vs marketing guy, again
me: yeah, the database server is not responding, so you cannot log in to post your blog, wait for it to get online.
MG: But, the website is online.
me: web host and database server are two distinct things, they are not the same, *share a screenshot of the error*
MG: Oh okay.
Literally 3 hours later this fucking idiot sends an email and I quote.
"Hi Dev,
@CTO FYI, Someone has removed this code So there is some tracking issue on it.
Please add below google analytics code on the website.
Note: Copy and paste this code as the first item into the <HEAD> of every web page that you want to track. If you already have a Global Site Tag on your page, simply add the config line from the snippet below to your existing Global Site Tag.
<!-- Global site tag (gtag.js) - Google Analytics -->
<script async src="https://googletagmanager.com/gtag/..."></script>
<script>
window.dataLayer = window.dataLayer || [];
function gtag(){dataLayer.push(arguments);}
gtag('js', new Date());
gtag('config', 'UA-xxxxxxxx-1');
</script>
"
The fucking issue was of him not being able to post his shitty blog, and he shares an email like this, FOR FUCK'S SAKE!2 -
So one of my clients got their wordpress site hacked and basically just redirects to scam links and well.. I looked at in the server file manager and their are like three directories with this wordpress site (not clones but the same?) one in the root, a version in a folder called old and another in temp.. with 3 separate wp databases.. DNS entries had malware redirects, the wp-content folder was writable to the public and contained a temp folder with tons of encoded malware and ip links to malicious sites.. there was encoded malware in index.php, has like 20+ plugins, oh and the theme uses a dynamic web builder so the code is basically unreadable in source and scattered.. and the redirects seem to happen randomly or at least on a new session or something. Oh.. and did I mention there are no backups? 😃2
-
Some days ago a friend told me about this good site to by the new .app domains, bigdaddy.com.
So I wanted to look for a domain and ooops, thats gay porn 😮
I confused names with godaddy.com. Maybe a lecture at uni is not the best place to open this site 😅 -
An online community I've been part of for years has seen a lot of popularity/hate overnight due to a new policy. The influx of new people who want nothing to do with us but just drop by to troll and be cunts is impressive. Also, a significant amount of bots. I want my online home back :( I'm for the new policy and very much against these new clowns who don't really have any reason to be on our page. Before anyone yells gatekeeping, it's a site about knitting and crochet. Why would you go there if you don't know either craft and have no desire to learn or talk about those? So disappointed. I hope it brought new crafters in and that the trolls will go away soon. It's been such a nice place for so long with barely any idiots because it was reasonably small.. And now look at this mess. I logged in to 20 friend requests from people I don't know and am almost certain aren't real people.
Why is it so hard for humans to accept that some people may disagree with them and that's okay?16 -
I just got an email that a client changed their DNS zone files to point at a new server. Turns out that they haven't set the server up yet. Client is wondering why that domain's emails aren't working, and why their site is down. They didn't want to give me the Domain's portal login credentials until now, because they "could do it without [me]." Tomorrow morning should be fun.4

Providing a web site to pay electricity and other services, but guess what? THE CONNECTION IS NOT SeCuRe !! (What can possibly can go wRoNg).
This retarded country have a lot of skilled people, but the dinosaurs who in charge are literally afraid of new technology.
Wake up bitches, it's almost 2020 -
I got a project to "refactor" some shitty site. It was written in nativ php. The guy who wrote this is a moron.
The site is so unsecure that my dog could broke into it while barking at cats.
It's sooo unreadable and illogical.
Every time i look at the code i get sadder and sadder. And now i understand why so many people hate php..
**Jump in time**
After i planned the new logic. My boss told me i can't do any of this. Because they only need a new user lever..
Now i just stare at this pile of horse sh*t and rant about it.4 -
Looking back on 2022 from a developer's perspective, even without talking politics, war, climate, health, and injustice, despite CSS updates and AI progress, it feels like two steps forward, one step back. I used to curse ReactJS and Webpack, but we can have breaking changes everywhere else, like PHP 8 vs. WordPress. Oh yeah, and why do customers still love WordPress so much that we have to mess with this unstable abomination with its half-baked Gutenberg block editor and (full) site editing? And what about "social" media? Well, never mind, after Usenet and Myspace, why did people favour Facebook and Twitter in the first place? Thanks to devRant, there is at least one site where I rant about obscure tech topics from my subjective point of view, using swear words and exaggeration, without getting downvotes. Maybe I am even allowed to say "Mastodon" here? Thanks and merry Chanukka, Jul, X-Mas, Y-Mas, and Z-Mas and a happy new year everybody!3

*get task assigned to me*
*complete task*
*get new task changing everything I did in the previous task*
Me: "Why is this getting completely changed? It meets the specs you sent."
PM: "Well, they took a while to approve the concept so I assumed it would be the same as the one on their current site. But now they want something different. Just change it."
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME. WHAT IN THE ACTUAL FUCK IS THE POINT OF SENDING FOR APPROVAL IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO WAIT FOR THE APPROVAL?!2 -
I get an email about an hour before I get into work: Our website is 502'ing and our company email addresses are all spammed! I login to the server, test if static files (served separately from site) works (they do). This means that my upstream proxy'd PHP-FPM process was fucked. I killed the daemon, checked the web root for sanity, and ran it again. Then, I set up rate limiting. Who knew such a site would get hit?
Some fucking script kiddie set up a proxy, ran Scrapy behind it, and crawled our site for DDoS-able URLs - even out of forms. I say script kiddie because no real hacker would hit this site (it's minor tourism in New Jersey), and the crawler was too advanced for joe shmoe to write. You're no match for well-tuned rate-limiting, asshole!1 -
When the marketing exec rings to tell you that they are making a new site for the company...in Wix and that they need to use flash for the "animations".3
-
it always amaze me when client thinks that new layout for his site will solve all performance problems3
-
That lovely moment when a client calls out of the blue at 4:30PM (we close at 5), 3 weeks before scheduled launch and says, "My website goes down tomorrow so where are we at with the new site?" So...I scrambled all day today to get the site done and it turns out they don't even own their domain or control their DNS. (facepalm) They put in a 30 day cancellation with their current provider and didn't bother to mention we had barely 2 weeks to develop a full custom site.7

Me: Im testing a new feature that is not on production yet for 30m and can not make it work. (I asked the developer for any idea why is not working)
Dev: i just tested, works fine.
Me: i just tested again with no luck. I’m i missing anything?
Dev: (Developer comes to my desk). Lets see what you doing wrong here. (After 5seconds). You have been redirected to the production site and you've been testing there all this time.
Me: 😩1 -
>site is production ready
>client requests new feature by end of week
>add feature and then site breaks on last day of week
>client freaks out even though we warned this is what happens when you add new features DURING LAUNCH WEEK1 -
Receive several documents of blog posts from a client, each one titled "Blog $n - $category - $title." Cool, the client gave them to me in order and I just have to plug them in.
Enter blogs on site starting with Blog 1.
Client sees the blogs on the site and loses their shit. "I specifically numbered the blogs so you knew what order to put them in! How hard is it to put them in numerical order? Blog 1 is the newest blog and should be first on the page."
The site displays the newest post first, but because any normal person would have named the oldest blog "blog 1" and counted up from there the blogs are in the reverse order the client expected.
What the hell kind of dense motherfucker numbers their blog files in a manner which requires them to rename every file each time they write a new blog post? -
Just started a new job and am looking through the code base. I think I'll have plenty of material for this site at least. 🙃
-
Just got an email from a customer who is deciding to stick with their existing eCommerce site after we built a new one.
They said they don't have time to sort out all their data for the import to the new site so are putting it on hold, possibly permanently.
They have now made the old site responsive - albeit very badly.
I just don't get it, what's wrong with people? The new one is far better.
They have paid us but just pissed off all the efforts have gone down the drain.3 -
So I log into a great new site with my development machine. 64G of RAM, and 2 hex core CPU's; GTX 1070 video, SSD, etc. 4K display screen. (Motherboard is 5 years old, not trying to brag, just give context). I regularly put 8 pages of text on the screen side by side. Split ergonomic keyboard.
It wants me to load a mobile app for "full access".
Yea, why look at the world with wide open eyes when you can view everything through a cardboard toilet paper tube and type with your thumbs???
== John == -
Almost burnout story? What about right now...
Customer was really positive about the new site we are creating for them then, out of the blue panic, they complain about features (calculations) which aren't implemented yet (they didn't provide any information for the calculation until 1 week ago.) And they complain that the site does not has any content
THAT IS RIGHT YOU DUMB FUCKS...
I can't magically create content for YOUR site... -
So this company wanted their site launched early..so I coded for 3 days straight, hardly a wink of sleep and I launched it by the new deadline they gave me. Then they send me screenshots of a million problems with CSS and I'm like...THATS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU RUSH YOU STUPID PRICKS2

We need a new Website for our school TV club. Ok..
I start to make a idea of site and give it to the guy, who said that we need a new site.
He liked the idea.
I started to make site.
*Few hours later*
The site is "ready" (Not fancy af but operates)
I go to the guy who want the site.
He said: "Why do you make the site? I setuped Wordpress for our site."
Fuck you.1 -
Woops! I was debugging a particularly snarky issue in Production the other day. This morning I realized about 60 minutes into my new coding I hadn't changed my profile back. I was testing form submissions on a live customer's site.2
-
I changed IP address of the domain A record to point to his new site. Told him it could take a day to propagate, but usually fine in a few hours. 2 hours later... "Microsoft is pointing to new site but Google isn't". I have to make some assumptions here, who else calls a browser by its fucking parent company, that is if he is talking about that or search engines. Anyway just sent him my favourite wiki link on how to clear browser cache and hopefully he will fuck off indefinitely.1

That moment after you finish coding a site and the client comes back with a request for weekly analytics reports, on top of all the data from GA, New Relic, etc... in Excel documents. O_O2

DevRant-API-Docs Site Update:
QA is in the works. Will try to keep it as simple as possible!
The "all questions" page front end is done. Now there's only the "new question" page and the "view question" page.3 -
Week 1 : Be told website needs to be responsive for all main mobile devices. Code and complete.
Week 2 : Go back to previous work
Week 3 : Oh the MD is doing a demo this week (which was arranged in week 1) of the responsive site, can you change almost everything and add all this new functionality before Tuesday.... -
We need an open-source alternative to stack overflow. They have fucking monopolizing pieces of ratshit admins there and lame ass bots.
I HAD A FUCKING 450 REP :/ and now i have "reached my question limit"
I mean its okay of you want to keep stackoverflow clean , but straight out rejecting the new queries should be against your god damn principles, if those mofos have any!
If it is so easy to downvote and delete a question for the mods, why can't they create a trash site called dump.stackoverflow.com ? whenever a question is not following their stupid guidelines , downvote it to oblivion. After a certain limit, that question goes to dump space where it will be automatically removed after 30 days. Atleast give us 30 fucking days to gather attention of audience !
And how does a question defines someone's character that you downright ban the person from asking new questions? Is there a phd that we should be doing in our mother's womb to get qualified as legitimate question author?
"No questions are stupid" is what we usually hear in our school/college life. And that's a stretch, i agree. Some questions are definitely stupid. But "Your questions are so stupid we are removing you from the site" is the worst possible way to deal with a question asker.
Bloody assholes.
Now, can anyone tell me that if am passing a parcelable list of objects in an intent before starting a new activity, how can i retrieve it in the new activity without getting any kotlin warnings?
The compiler is saying that the data coming via intent is that of list<Type!> aka list of platform type, so how to deal with this warning?15 -
I was still a 2nd year college student back then. Someone approached me about a personal branding site, with quite a generous fee for a poor student like me.
I took the job. Surprisingly she paid me in advance. About a week later, when I wanted to clear up some requirements with her, she disappeared. Didn't read any of my messages. Didn't respond to my calls, let alone emails.
Some time later, I got busy with exams and college stuffs. Welp, I let go of the project, even erasing the github repo to make some room for new private repos on the way.
A year later (yes you read it right), she came back.
Messaged me on WhatsApp.
"Hey dude, how you doin? Sorry about last time, I needed some time to take care of stuffs.
So how's the website going?".
By that time, even the domain name I bought for her site had expired.
I didn't know what to say, so I just shut up.
"Remember that I paid you in advance. Either finish the site or give me my money back."2 -
Beware: Here lies a cautionary tale about shared hosting, backups, and -goes without saying- WordPress.
1. Got a call from a client saying their site presented an issue with a third-party add-on. The vendor asked us to grant him access to our staging copy.
2. Their staging copy, apparently, never got duplicated correctly because, for security reasons, their in-house dev changed the name of the wp-content folder. That broke their staging algo. So no staging site.
3. In order to recreate the staging site, we had to reset everything back to WP defaults. Including, for some reason, absolute paths inside the database. A huge fucking database. Because WordPress.
4. Made the changes directly in a downloaded sql file. Shared hosting, obviously, had an upload limit smaller to the actual database.
5. Spent half an hour trying to upload table by table to no avail.
6. In-house uploads a new, fixed database with the help of the shared hosting provider.
7. Database has the wrong path. Again.
8. In-house performs massive Find and Replace through phpMyAdmin on the production server.
9. Obviously, MySQL crashes instantly and the site gets blocked for over 3 hours for exceeding shared hosting limits.
10. Hosting provider refuses to accept this was caused by such a stupid act and says site needs to be checked because queries are too slow.
11. We are gouging our eyeballs as we see an in-house vs. hosting fight unfold. So we decide to watch a whole Netflix documentary in between.
12. Finally, the hosting folds and enables access to the site, which is obvi not working because, you know, wrong paths.
13. Documentary finishes. We log in again, click restore from backup. Go to bed. Client phones to bless us. Client’s in-house dev probably looking for a cardboard box to pack his stuff first thing in the morning. \_(ツ)_/¯ -

There is a new phishing site going around called "rogstrike.com" that is being spread by Steam DMs.
Infected asks victim to "vote for their team" and in order to do that, you need to login with steam. The steam login part is sketchy af, litterally spawns a fake new window in the same tab. Doesn't matter what OS you use, it's always Win 10 styled. Lol.
I reported on twitter and via email, i'll see what they will do.4 -
So a week ago my boss asked me to design + build/write code for our new site from scratch.
Meanwhile the old website they have had for 5 years is still without SSL and looks pre-2000.
It's supposed to be finished and be mobile responsive by tomorrow.

I was experimenting with a load test suite called 'Siege' to build and scale increasingly complex searches against our new site search engine. I assumed that an old iMac couldn't have generated a crushing load against the beta servers and I learned two things the day I wrote and started that script before heading to lunch:
1) Beta and Production shared MSSQL instances
2) That single iMac was more than enough to take the whole production site down... -

Last day in the office. I started remembering good old memories. Felt nostalgic and doubted my new job as they were not giving rise as per my expectation.
Then, my manager comes up with his divine improvement in the good working site (not for me but for other dev).
I felt sorry for my fellow mates and started praising my new job.1 -
HTML is the core building block of the web. Why does everyone feel the need these days to abstract and virtualize and recreate the wheel? You’re only slowing down your site...plus adding layers of confusion for new comers and adding more code to maintain.12
-
So, i helped solving 168 bugs for this website. Ofcourse, doubting every step since i'm still new here. Yesterday there was a meeting with the directors. Appearently they where happy a graded the site with a 8.5.
I finished my education with a 6. Not taking credit for any of the above...4 -
I see a lot of talk about complex numbers, and yet
for all they are worth, I have not once been
able to find an explaination on how to calculate
them by hand, namely the real component.
For example
(-5)**0.5
(1.3691967456605067e-16+2.23606797749979j)
2.23606 is obviously just the square root of 5, but where the hell did 1.369 come from?
Apparently no one fucking knows, and no site I've found gives a simple explanation for someone new to math in general.
"use a calculator", "hit a button",
How about no.9 -

"Web design has a bad reputation for being stylistically trendy and same-looking. Some guy does a parallax scrolling site, and now your boss wants you to add that to your corporate PR website for some reason. Glossy buttons, Gaussian Noise, linen texture, new things that look fake-old, then back to minimalism and flat colors as a reaction to the glossy noisy textured fake-old stuff." - Jonas Downey1

I'm writing a devrant like site, so a kind of forum that supports live chat under every article. Login will be just username and password to stay anonymous. Email is optional for password reset. Also it won't have password requirements. Who cares if user uses insecure password. I do like the devrant avatar thing. I will use the ducky generator instead. So everyone on the site is a custom duck. K-SASS prolly never expected his generator to be used anywhere. The requirement of this site is that it scales very well. I have db calls of 0.006s, this is for persistent data only and will be used by all site instances. I expect that it can handle many clients concurrent as long I do not return more than 30 rows or so. Events get handled by a self written pubsub server.
All sounds great and development goes fine. But why is this a rant? Because the same thing as always is biting me, I can't design a site at all. I know how but I don't have any feeling for design at all making me almost incapable of building an attractive site. The only thing I can 'design' is an application in bootstrap or smth. I spend so much time one design while I don't like to do it ironically. But looks of site is almost as important as an good working site. Good working site doesn't get used if looks bad in many casee. This is since the start of my career an issue and it sucks that I appearantly can't deliver a whole site on my own meeting my standards.
My backend work is top notch tho. Btw, this application is not to be an alternative for devrant. I do not think I can attract more users than it already has and I've seen two communities disappearing once because someone decided to make a new one, took half of community with him and both communities died after short while.
End product of this project is a working project, not a live site hosted somewhere. It's pure about mixing mostly self written tech to get the best performance. Reinventing wheel on many levels. I wanted maybe to do the site in C but decided that it's way to much work for the value. I change the site so rapid since I don't have decent plan that python aiohttp is the best choice in amount of writing it yourself and fast. It's very lightweight.
More a story than a rant, sorry29 -
Working more than 5 months for our new web site. And considering lots of cool stuff and useful features. Just after the launch one customer called our support to notify that our site has been hacked.1
-
Got a small job redesigning a website and adding some simple functionality.
Turns out, the old sod who built the old site is too proud of his work to let anyone tamper with it, even knowing it is never used.
Long story short, I am making a complete new site and the customer lost their domain name. -
So I work in a web development company in my town and have been doing a while or heap of parallax sites for our clients. Now obviously when we do the designs we get them in and get them to play around with the site before we go ahead and push their new site out and make it live right.
Wellll who would of thought that a simple parallax site would be so hard to use for the general user??? Recently we have been getting the occasional call where the client is getting complaints about the site only being a big ole image or just one block of text. After investigating why their site was broken or why the users weren't able to see the whole site I came across no problems at all.
Today I got a call from the client who instructed me that after explaining to one of his own clients that he had to scroll down the page that everything was just fine!
I mean, what? How do you miss the big ole scroll bar on ya screen or even think to even attempt to scroll? Some people aye lmao2 -

I would like to have more time to work on the old, lonely, dust gathering site I started to build. There was a lot of new skills I wanted to test and train. But my personal life is getting stressful in the last time. Wife broke her leg and my son started in kindergarten.
I'm starting a new job in Dec, so I quit my current job. I had to reduce my work hours to collect my son from kindergarten. Sounds like I have much time now? Nope, there somehow is few time for programming. I enjoy bouldering (thats where the leg thing happend 🙄) and that's where even more of my time goes.
I see my project become ugly in the meantime, because there are even more new things I read about and would like to use... -

Have you seen beaker browser? It’s literally so cool - it’s a peer-to-peer browser and also you can host sites off it. Like, it actually has a “new site” button.

We hired someone to make the new front site because I was too busy.
The guy had a plain text password system to show, mispronounced "FontAwesome", and used WordPress.
He was not an instructor but was supposed to be the "senior option" for when I couldn't do something for any reason.
I later asked him for some opinion on how to translate the site, and he disabled the Captcha plugin. I. Don't. Know. Why. I figured because of all the spam I got suspiciously after he "took a look" at the admin panel.
Luckily I could get him out of the contacts and now we are looking for more devs. -

Just signed up for this site, took me three minutes to figure out how to post a rant.
Do the designers know what a call to action is? Where in this screenshot tells me "post a rant here" or "click here to write your first" or "new rant" or even a plus symbol, pencil, paper, or any sort of symbology?
Nope. It's in a vague, almost invisible menu with a symbol of three dots that usually means "things you don't normally use might be in here". The main function of the site. Tucked away where nobody can see it.

We released a website for a client 10 days ago. The site was up and running and everything seemed fine.
But it turns out that the site used 15GB of bandwidth in 5 days ( WTF???).
So now I need to go and examine my code to make sure I didn't forget something and implement a new caching methods to try and reduce the amount of bandwidth being used.
But I still don't understand how a small "newspaper" website with a max upload size of 5MB could of used so much in so little time.
I also added a screenshot showing the number of visits from an addthis dashboard5 -

So, the Network I was on was blocking every single VPN site that I could find so I could not download proton onto my computer without using some sketchy third-party site, so, being left with no options and a tiny phone data plan, I used the one possible remaining option, an online Android emulator. In the emulator running at like 180p I once again navigated to proton VPN, downloaded the windows version, and uploaded it to Firefox send. Opened send on my computer, downloaded the file, installed it, and realized my error, I need access to the VPN site to log in.
In a panic, I went to my phone ready to use what little was left of data plan for security, and was met with no signal indoors. Fuck. New plan. I found a Xfinity wifi thing, and although connecting to a public network freaked me out, I desided to go for it because fuck it. I selected the one hour free pass, logged in, and it said I already used it, what? When?, So I created a new account, logged in, logged into proton, and disconnected, and finally, I was safe.
Fuck the wifi provider for discouraging a right to a private internet and fuck the owner for allowing it. I realize how bad it was to enter my proton account over Xfinity wifi, but I was desperate and desperate times call for desperate means. I have now changed my password and have 2fa enabled.1 -

Worst prod scenario experienced - on site in small African country working on CRM/billing system my colleague was testing some new SQL and after finishing decided to drop and recreate the DB. Stakeholder: Can you investigate the problem with this user profile? We made updates to system A, but user is saying it’s the wrong info on the website.
Me: Looks fine to me. Looks like your updates just needed time to trickle down. Though, you will need to clean up this user’s data because it can cause X problems. There’s not much I can do since the site just displays info from system A.
SH: Can you delete the user’s website account and we can ask user to create a new one?
Me: …Ok, let’s try this again. It’s not necessary to delete the account and make the user create a new one. It’s not going to resolve the X problems that I mentioned. The website really needs clean data from system A.1 -

I just contacted the support of one of our service provider for virtual tours. I told them that the iframe will open the website (in target self) instead of playing the tour, and that our clients will most likely not come back to our site, when they don't see a "go back" or something. Best would be, if the iframe plays instead of opening a new tab.
Supports answer: "I sent you a video, there you can see how to get back to your website"
*sends a video of themself opening his browsing history and clicking our site*

That moment when you have hundreds of lines of code for your website, then you wanted to add a simple modal which looks great on w3school.
Then you recreate the modal on your site, click the button and nothing happens....
So now, you are spending hours trying to figure out why it's not working, new file to test, tried another modal concept, change the CSS, refresh the page until the F5 button doesn't even work anymore!!!
To find out, there is a extra "." in the href file tag plus the tag is in a id not a class -
"I might need to come back to this page later" always leads to about 50 tabs being open and me just opening the site in a new tab because that's just quicker than finding it.

Just let me add a new feature to this Wordpress site, I'll just enable debugging to see if it produces any errors.

Folks,
What static site generator do you prefer, and why?
I want to set up a website for a small business and do not want to spend a lot of time on it but it also should be blazing fast.
My familiarity with react leads me to Gatsby, but there are probably good alternatives.
It should also be easy for the (non-tech) admin then to create posts on a news page or even new pages (probably with Markdown).
Thank you in advance!4 -
I just joined a new company.
Their CI pipeline is to give root access to staging and prod servers to every developer in the company and the manually git pull each repository (8-10 repos per server) and manually set nginx and port configurations. And if this wasn't enough, all of the 30 sites they have are basically the same site and they make the changes manually for each tenant (no env file). I'm amazed at how hard some people are willing to work.5 -

So what exactly is it like working as a developer?
I'm still in the learning phase but I can't seem to picture what exactly it is you'll be doing daily if you get hired.
Is it like constant coding? But like, the site is already made and is huge.
Or is it like making new stuff? But then like, there's already a big company site.
It's what I wanna do but I honestly can't imagine how it will work different from doing it for yourself7 -

TLDR: Detect site visitors browser and conditionally load a Citrix frame rather than rendering the site
The request came about 3 days after launching a new project to production. For several months before that moment we had reviewed and confirmed the supported browser matrix. As you might guess plans tend to go up in smoke as we approach and pass launch. Now that we're live after all, it would be the tine to lose our damn minds rather than bask in the warmth of a successful launch for 5 minutes.
Anyway as for the actual request, after those first few days the client PM realized a FEW people were actually using IE8 and was now panicking that it was unsupported. On my way out of the building that day he asked if we could detect the browser and rather than render the site load a frame to a Citrix session that would be running the latest IE... -
Felt like helping out a local brewery with a website due to the pandemic for free beer.
OMG feel like an idiot on how long it takes to set up static site from scratch.
Using the static site generator Hugo is easy but customizing the templates, content writing and the graphics are becoming such a fucking bitch! Especially the fucking graphics and not using photoshop but gimp. Is there something else do not want to learn anything else.
Not even to the hosting yet, I hope AWS for hosting static sites is as cheap as eveyone says. I know there is a learning curve but that is why I took this on so I would have experience with it and can out it on my resume.
New respect for free-lancers that do it all.9 -
If there is anything worse than a bad, not willing to learn programmer is a so called plugin programmer.
Who only knows how to install plugin over plugin to do a simple task.

Hi devranters,
I'm currently in the process of developing a new service with which websites can be advertised for free.
The idea is you get to advertise your website for free on the network and in return you add advertisements from other websites on the network to your site.
More detailed information can be found at https://handelads.com
How many of you as developers would be interested in such a service?
I would appreciate any feedback you all might have.10 -

So, i started at this company about 4 months ago. So far i mostly worked in existing project and legacy code.
We started a new project for a pretty big client, and i'm the one who's responsible for setting the project up. The last two days i've been struggling with database issues. Finally got the site running locally about an hour ago.
And now i am running into troubles because i don't know how to set up a project yet since i only worked in existing projects.

My company is getting a new website. This involves getting new hosting.
I made the old one, and it's all just static html. I'm not that attached to it but it's an important detail.
The bosses want the switch to the new site to happen instantly, but I pointed out that with DNS propagation times etc it can't really happen that way.
So I suggested the new web guys host our old site for a few days and we change the DNS now. Then when they want to launch we don't have to wait for the DNS and they can just swap it out.
This involves dropping 10MB of html files into the web directory on the new server.
For this service they are charging us for 2 hours of their time!
I guess I'm in the wrong business... -
My dumbfuck hosting fucked up the mysqlnd installation and it is missing the pdo api extension. All my queries are returning strings for every field. It's easter so no support available. From a dev and eCommerce management perspective, Groupon is THE WORST. They just launched a brand new marketplace site but STILL don’t have an API I can connect with to do fulfillment. Their CSV format is useless for our shipping company. Their data inputs are not sanitized and standardized enough to be predictable for purposes of transformation via scripting. The exceptions and edge cases are infinite. So I’m STILL stuck having to take time out of my day to manually copy and paste and correct order data into the proper format to FTP to the fulfillment company. Oh, and I don’t yet know if the new marketplace does this, but the old one used to suspend vendor accounts for...get this...selling TOO MUCH! How is Groupon still in business?

[Conference Call on Project Launch]

🤡: ok. i will test them and provide feedback. if it’s all good, then you can launch it.
🙊: ok. we will do another set of UAT after launch for your new features.
🤡: ok. i will let you know when we can launch the current UAT.
[Two weeks later]
🤡: #%^#*+!! why are the new features not on the UAT site yet!! why are there no changes after two week!! we cannot accept more delays! really need to launch asap!

Him: "I'm updating a site and I'm trying to find the REST endpoints you put out to replace the SOAP services"
Me: "Send me a list of endpoints it's using and I'll tell you what the new ones are"
Him: "Here's a list of the endpoints. The ones I've found are in bold"
Me: "Here's the new list."
Him: "Why did you only fill out the ones I'm not using?"
So, FML, he sent me a list of everything in the WSDL and bolded the ones he "found" in his code. And I'm the asshole for getting frustrated that he wasted 30 minutes of my time. -
Finally looked at the client who overbuilt his WordPress site that I'd gladly build him a new dedicated custom site for $150k and 12 months.
Even if he says he'll take the offer I have no intention of helping this person. Every time I say edits will be done in two days, he spends the next two days sending me emails with more edits to do on top. Today alone I received 78 emails from the client, 46 from the PM which were forwards of other edits. The entire project was handled wrong from the start and no one has the balls to tell him he needs a better solution than WordPress or what our agency can provide. We have a few hundred clients, he's lucky to get one week turn around time on anything more than copy changes. He wants form functionality changes weekly because he's always got a new idea, the current form has over 30 fields for users to fill out, all required, and he's always asking for more.4 -

I'm a little afraid of what I'm doing. I just asked my boss to change my current role, almost on site, with a new one requested by the global function of my company. If they accept I will be traveling >80% of the time. I know I will miss my little daughters but I also know that this is maybe the last chance for a step forward in my career. I'm sharing my feelings only with my brother and devrant people.10

Half a year or so ago I threw together a quick site for an old teacher of mine. Got a bit of cash for it and all was good. Now he needs a few changes, plus a whole new interactive page. Oh well... I restructured the whole thing and wrote a bare bones templating system in PHP. It can parse markdown files, so now he can fix his own fucking spelling errors. So now the shitty piece of crap is maintainable. Thanks fucking God for that.

For you freelancers out there, I've been working on trying to make some income with it locally, making single page static sites for some local businesses and restaurants so that I can get a couple hundred for making the site and a little over the cost of hosting each month residually, offering like one free menu change per month, but all redesigns and support being hourly.
I want it to be accessible pricing cause like 5 of my favorite places to eat have defunct sites that I think weren't worth the cost anymore, and I'd love to be able to see up to date menus and hours and I'm certain others would too.
Basically, I'm trying to figure out what hosting would be best for this and if I'm being realistic enough with pricing. I like the idea of surge.sh, but I feel like 12/mo for a custom domain SSL, which is good for SSL, is higher than some of the other alternatives for a lightweight one sing page site.
Any help would be great, Have a great new year guys!3 -

My last rant did not go down well 😂
I need to clarify.
If you have no communication directly to another dev.... And your creation directly impacts theirs .... And you don't tell the middle man ... You are a twat especially if your aware of the launch that's basically right now !
To be clear.... This guy built their site and database everything .
I had to connect part of their new app to the site... A few pages they wanted in the app.
He changed the links ... On purpose I think to screw over the launch of the app to make me look bad
I can not communicate with him... The CEO hates him and won't talk to him either
So what am I to do?
Not be pissed off about a spiteful dickhead?
Of course I'm pissed

We once had to make another wordpress multilanguage site on a different domain but it should use the whole footer from previous site full with its images and sitemaps. The client said "just make it look like a copy of a footer". This would require us to copy the whole footer for 4 different languages every time somebody makes a change in the original site.
So the workaround we did in the end was to make a specific page in original wordpress site which only returns the footer.
In the new wordpress site we made a code which scrapes that whole page and puts its contents on the footer of the new wordpress site.
It worked perfectly and we never needed to copy the whole footer again because it was "dynamic". -
Our owner's other company sells products online (or has the ability to anyways). Their current site is 7+ years old WordPress/Woocommerce and is seriously outdated because the site breaks if you update anything so we've been told to make a new site (finally). They also said they were going to release a whole new line up of products. So the first thing I tried to do was get them to nail down their product line and how shipping was going to be configured. I was told to just use the shipping from the previous site.
Turns out those shipping rates don't use any sort of math or automation at all, there is literally a manually set shipping value for every single product for every single shipping location (30*60) and even values for different quantities. And there's no way to export these rates into a readable table because the plugins they use shove all the data into the postmeta table, I'm forced to go through and put the data into a spreadsheet so that I can attempt to organize it and hopefully find someone way to automate it. Owner claims at one point that he has a similar spreadsheet that's more up to date but for some reason refuses to send it over or put me in touch with the right people in the shipping department.
I've gone through the shipping rates with the old products and the new products and organized them as best I can and each time I've gotten done and shown them the spreadsheet with their products and shipping, they add or change something which requires me to basically wipe the slate clean and start over eating another 50 or so hours of my time, which with everything else really means another month+ to find time to work on it between other projects.
After about a year they finished their products and I finally finished the planning and got approval to build it out for the site. Small victory!!
After about 60 hours plugging these values into the database (only about 1/3 done) I get an email from their head of shipping who tells me the values in my spreadsheet are "terribly inaccurate, in some areas by $100+" and that the data should not be used anywhere.
So after something like a year and a half and 200+ hours of work, the data I've been using to plan all this isn't even accurate. I'm trying not to go crazy here but this kind of shit is unacceptable. When we're done with this I'm going to send the owner an invoice to show him how much money he wasted on this because nothing was planned and he just wanted it built. There's a fucking process for a reason, when you don't follow the process you fuck everything up. If a client had pulled this shit and turned their simple site into this much work they would have been dropped. I get constant emails asking when the new site will be done and every time my answer is "I'm still waiting for x items that I asked for last time you asked where we were." He gets a couple things on the list and sends them back and then goes unresponsive for weeks at a time.
Management has been telling me that I seem more stressed lately but only one of them understands what's going on here when I explain it. The rest say stupid shit like "why don't you automate it" or "make an intern do it." You won't let me hire an intern and even if I did, I'm not sure I could explain how the shipping works now to even trust someone else to do it. I'm hoping when the shipping guy gives me the new sheet that maybe there's some easier solution here because I'm ready to start shooting people.2 -

This has been bothering me for a while. I have an old freelance client of mine I’ve created an web site for (his company) it was small one so I took the complete payment before deployment and I needed no contract. I deployed the complete version of the site on my server, bought the domain for his company under my name and it has been running for a year now.
Lately he had asked me to give admin privileges to his son (cs student 1y) to upload some photos of their new building. I noticed he ruined several functions on the site in doing so, but I was never paid to support that just the hosting for a year.
When I was making the design I made a simple but pretty logo as a placeholder for the site which went in production since they never gave me company logo. All good, no contract small cash all delivered, everyone happy.
Up until few days when I saw my f**king logo cut out from the site as 250px jpeg and made as a huge banner on the company building..
From my pov I would’ve never given permission to use that since its not something i’m proud of and would suggest to make a better one for a fee. I see this as stolen/unauthorized use of intellectual property. But the laws are super shitty in our country so at this point I am stuck at taking their site, domain a hostage until they pay for the logo they used or take it down or taking legal actions.. we never signed anything about that logo.4 -
I've reached a point where instead of adding one new hotfix to the site again, I rather rewrite it from scratch so I won't feel so dirty hacking in all the new features that come up.
This way I can also bury my previous bad decisions.2 -
A friend of mine is finishing his telecomm engineering degree, currently on an internship.

First time I use Travis CI today :D
(And my first build error ever...)
In combination with Nuxt.js it is so fucking useful for Vue Development. Wow!
I think I've found my new favourite JS Framework.
Had a bit of trouble with Github Pages but I just created a 'source' branch with the source code and a 'master' branch with the deployed site. The reason is that organization sites can only be published from 'master' branch for some reason...
Anyways Travis CI is very useful!3 -

Trying to make a site that requires an external API and that API limits you to certain calls per certain time before they ban you for 24 hours and asking yourself how not to get banned :| *I'm new to webdev*6

We're doing single login with Azure AD for a Java-based site. We need to also sync the user changes with a microservice.
Now, here comes the fun part: Microsoft is working on a new API which looks promising, which they recommend to use as they've migrated their resources there. But this new API has SDK for a ton of languages but Java, so that's a no-no. On the other side, the js sdk for the old API is borderline unusable and has no deltas (which we need to sync users), although the new one is pretty good.
As a cherry on the cake, applications created with the old API are not transferrable to the new one, but it is otherwise. This is detailed in a very small section of their labrythinc docs and I'm really hoping that this is true or we're thoroughly screwed.
Alas, Microsoft, you've disappointed me again!2 -
Today I discovered that Betheme for Wordpress stores data base64 encoded in the database. Meaning you can't just do a search replace when you migrate a site to a different domain. That combined with Chrome based browsers not loading mixed security assets, but Firefox (the browser I use) does, makes for a confusing trouble ticket.
You have to change the setting to serialize sanely, then go into every post and save to update the stored data. Fortunately, the site is new so I only had one page to update, but I can't imagine the headache an established site would be to migrate.3 -
I've been programming for 15 years now or more if I count my years I programmed as a hobby. I'm mostly self learned. I'm working in an environment of a few developers and at least the same amount of other people (managers, sales, etc). We are creating Magento stores for middle sized businesses. The dev team is pretty good, I think.
But I'm struggling with management a lot. They are deciding on issues without asking us or even if I was asked about something and the answer was not what they expect, they ask the next developer below me. They do this all the way to Junior. A small example would be "lets create a testing site outside of deployment process on the server". Now if I do this, that site will never be updated and pose a security risk on the server for eternity because they would forget about it in a week. Adding it to our deployment process would take the same time and the testing site would benefit from security patches, quick deployment without logging in to the server, etc. Then the manager just disappears after hearing this from me. On slack, I get a question in 30 minutes from a remote developer about how to create an SSH user for a new site outside of deployment. I tell him the same. Then the junior gets called upstairs and ending up doing the job: no deployment, just plain SSH (SFTP) and manually creating the database. I end up doing it but He is "learning" how to do it.
An other example would be a day I was asked what is my opinion about Wordpress. We don't have any experience with Wordpress, I worked with Drupal before and when I look at a Wordpress codebase, I'm getting brain damage. They said Ok. The next day, comes the announcement that the boss decided to use Wordpress for our new agency website. For his own health and safety, I took the day off. At the end, the manager ended up hiring an indian developer who did a moderately fair job. No HiDPI sprites, no fancy SASS, just plain old CSS and a simple template. Lightyears worse than the site it was about to replace. But it did replace the old site, so now I have to look at it and identify myself part of the team. Best thing? We are now offering Wordpress development.
An other example is "lets do a quick order grid". This meant to be a table where the customer can enter SKU and quantity and they can theoretically order faster if they know the SKU already. It's a B2B solution. No one uses it. We have it for 2 sites now and in analytics, we have 5 page hits within 3 years on a site that's receiving 1000 users daily... Mostly our testing and the client looked at it. And no orders. I mean none, 0. I presented a well formatted study with screenshots from Analytics when I saw a proposal to a client to do this again. Guess what happened? Someone else from the team got the job to implement it. Happy client? No. They are questioning why no one is using it.
What would you do as a senior developer?
- Just serve notice and quit
- Try to talk to the boss (I don't see how it would work)
- Just don't give a shit1 -
Client's WordPress powered site has gone down due to influx of traffic. Site is cached and whatnot, the server it's on is simply underpowered and not coping. Whilst I'm frantically trying to spin up new servers and load balance and get things back online, client keeps interrupting with emails like "URGENT - Website is down", "How long is this going to take please?", and "Hello! Do you know whats going on?!". I reply cordially to each, secretly growing increasingly enraged. "Yes I am already aware and working on it.", "Difficult to estimate, but I'm hoping no more than 20 minutes.", "Yes. I'm working on it.", "Yes, I know. I'm working on it."
And then I receive this gem: "Perhaps call Word press?"

How is a "web app" any better than a "web site"?
All a "web app" does is adding a JavaScript program as a middle-man between the browser and the server.
Where as "web sites" instantly deliver content, "web apps" deliver JavaScript code that then loads the content and puts it on the page.
A "web site" serves the browser useful content on a silver plate (metaphorically speaking), where as "web apps" serve some JavaScript code and the browser has to do the heavy lifting.
It appears that the only benefit of "web apps" is the fancier name. "App" sounds fancy while "site" sounds mundane. But technically, a "web app" is worse than a "web site". It's both slower and vulnerable to scripting errors.
Why would anyone in their right mind choose to create a web "app" over a web "site" to load text and a bunch of pictures?
I get it, some things such as posting comments without reloading the page and loading new search results when scrolling down are not possible without JavaScript, but why use JavaScript for everything, even where it wouldn't be necessary?
JavaScript should never be required to show a bunch of boxes containing pictures and some text. JavaScript is intended to enhance web sites, not to load entire websites.
As web developer Jake Archibald said, "[100% of] your users are non-JS while they're downloading your JS" ( https://twitter.com/jaffathecake/... ).
See also: I miss the good times when the web was lightweight. ( https://devrant.com/rants/9987051/... )
"App" is not an excuse: https://jakearchibald.com/2013/...
I am sad Archive.org switched to being a web app. But I applaud them for resisting that trend longer than most other large sites.28 -

Back in the early noughties I had an interview for the new job. A couple days before the interview I've visited that company's website. There was search input. Of cause I've entered some hacky things into it. And after several attempts I hacked it. The site was down in an infinite loop.
Two days later I told interviewer about the bug and what I did to reproduce it. He was surprised and checked the website. It was still down the same way.
I was totally ashamed. I was supposed to report that problem somehow.
BTW I got the job:) -
When the outside company that's testing your new site comes back with 10 problems:
2x are real issue
1x suggested wording change
2x them using bad data
2x are things that don't, shouldn't, and never existed on the site
3x can't be reproduced by anyone, including them

Just going through LastPass, came across some... strange entries in the site match for Instagram... Or is 'importing_from_installer' and '(null)' some new domain name convention?
P.S any opinions on LastPass?10 -
A while back I was looking for a new job and was given an interview by one company who shall remain nameless. Before the interview, they asked me look through their current site, nothing unusual there, so I started browsing. Then I received an email with all the details I needed to access their production server. Apparently they wanted me to look through the code, unusual but I did so.
First thing all the passwords, including those belonging to members of the public were stored in plain text and many were still the default passwords which were based on the Id so were sequential.
I highlighted these issues at the interview and they then asked me to do a test, not the usual test though, they asked me to add some charts to their prod site. Needless to say that didn’t happen and I got another job elsewhere.1 -
Migrate a site to a new web CMS... by rendering all current pages as static html files and copying it to a new server.
(true story) -
I'm working on an ecommerce site but it's attached to an old legacy system that the company used for logistics and point of sale
I just realized the previous lead dev structured it so all of the tables used in the new site are just the tables from the legacy system except prefixed by "new_"
Fuck this redundancy makes me angry -
I just started a new job where in my onboarding, I’m supposed to learn typescript and react. I am also supposed to gain some knowledge of databases. Since I am so new, I don’t really have any meetings. I see my manager maybe 2x a day. I’ve been using my time at work to learn these technologies.
I learn best by doing projects. I recently built a bot that scrapes media off of one site and posts it on another site. I was thinking I could create a react front end in typescript for the bit. I would also add a database to my project (the model for the front end) which contains the post history of the bot.
Would that be appropriate for work? I thought it would be good project to help me learn react. However, I am new to the “corporate” world and I feel like my manager won’t want me to waste company time on my side project.
The only other responsibilities I have are reviewing the source code and watching some onboarding videos6 -
Randomly generated CSS class names make customization of sites much more difficult.
Randomized gibberish CSS class names like "r-acJ79b" are used by some sites like the new Reddit and the new Twitter web apps, which makes it impossible to customize the appearance of the site and to hide "trending" spam. The only way hide annoying and spammy page elements is through user scripts which scan the page for it every second and then hide it. But until then, it appears on screen for a short period.
I once thought this is caused by react JS, but the react JS front end of the video platform "Odysee" does not have randomized CSS class names.10 -

Wordpress.com are idiots. I have free site there. And now I want to edit my posts and I clicn on my site in top left and it does not do anything. And its not a first time. Wtf. Fucking idiots. After over 250 hours of studying since October, and doing multiple mock interviews a week, I'm finally starting to feel more confident in myself. I feel confident in the work I've accomplished over the time at my current company, and can think about it more critically.
It also helps to know I have my first "on-site" next week, have multiple technical phone screenings set up, and know that I'll be jumping to a new company sooner than later.
Studying really pays off if you do it well. -
The joys of finding out two days after going live with your new site, that somehow you used a backup table of the old site, from 6 fucking months before, to serve as a base for migration.
So you have to write hundreds of lines of queries by hand, to ensure that the old data still fits into your migrated data, and also keep the changes made in these two days.1 -
I can't stop laughing at the irony of this post : https://freenode.net/news/...
in fact, all posts from rasengan on the freenode "news" site are laughable. If you want a good weekend laugh, you should subscribe to the site.
I rarely read freenode's news because it was mostly only technical update posts that wasn't too relevant to me. But now, this person is using an IRC network's news site as their personal ranting space and probably want to pass them off as "news".
oh, and apparently, they have too many designations that they need to use a new one with every new post.12 -

When you have a manager that gets the requirements for a super simple content page one month ago...
Then argues with some people about where it needs to go...
Then when it was decided two weeks ago that it needed to be a new publishing site insists on getting approval to deploy the new site even when I said hey I can have this guy set up publishing on our external server...
Gets approval anyway, now the deadline for it to be activated and working is tomorrow and because he is "a Wordpress developer" (by which he can install a theme) he thinks he knows how to fix Wordpress...
Because of the security at our company it needs to be over https and we are doing ssl offload from our publisher and Wordpress doesn't seem to like it or it is his jacked up Windows box running Wordpress? Wtf
Best of all he said "do you think we will meet the deadline". I said I don't think we have a choice, this will be used by a lot of people Saturday for a conference. OMG I was ready to scream...
Now today I need to setup a new cms on an external server and get it done by tomorrow morning, with content. FML -
FUCKING NGINX...........
I moved a website to a new server, and nginx redirects me to another fucking website on the same server. I have been trying to fix that for FUCKING 3 HOURS. I did everything. Disabled EVERY site on that server except that one, works. I go back. Guess what..... haha it goes back and FUCKING REDIRECTS ME TO OTHER SITES. You have to be fucking kidding me right 🖕. I check if I miswrote anything, check if it's the control panels fault (doesn't look like it). I make a vhost myself for the site (with the other still active to check if it detected the vhost). Reload...
nginx: "One vhost was ignored because the servername already exists". Yeah yeah you twat nginx.
So le me disables every site again (except le not working site). I enable every site again.
nginx: "owh hey * someip * heres the site".
Me: .............. 😡😡 fucking twat. 🖕🖕
BTW, have no clue what caused it. Seems to work now. It shouldn't be a DNS issue I checked that. Anyone any ideas? Appreciate it.3 -
When your development team gets called out to a testing site to fix the problem with the software not login in... and you emailed all the user's and the it admin to install the new software update due to security update and a server changeover... only to realise that all of them have the old version installed. I expected the user's not to follow instruction, but the IT admin... really?

Ooh this project.. So I was put in charge of creating new pages, and general maintenance as the site was already built by a previous dev on the team before i joined the company. I take a look at the design, fairly strange forward quick analysis most of it bootstrapable, some custom code is needed for some parts so no issues there.
Looks at the code, only the bootstrap grid system is being used, the rest is custom code, an additional 9K lines of CSS and 526 lines of JS. What the hell is this.2 -
What's the best way to deal with constant dread? I deployed code after following every procedure, got every kind of thumbs up from QA and now it's my fault our 2012 admin site borked. Should I point out all the obvious flaws (again), or should I give up on our stagnant-ass developers and systems?
The fear of showing off anything new is crippling. I wrote up a Pyton API to hook into our current pipeline over lunch breaks but am worried if I even raise it as an option it'll just be cast aside and lost to time, regardless of business value. -
I drank two pots of coffee and am now paranoid. I want to do memory test of my new ram. So I am going to use memtest from https://memtest.org/ . Out of paranoia I decide to test with VirusTotal. It passes 68 out of 70 tests. 2 say its bad. Windows Defender says it is fine. I usually just rely on Windows defender. I test with another site and it says it is clean. But is it really clean? Why do so many assholes ruin a good thing? Scammers and blackhat hackers are scum.4

how hard is it to set up a wordpress site? i hate to ask but am too busy just to try.
i always build everything from scratch, but my mother constantly asks for a new website providing wp-templates as examples. none of my past fancy features were used so i am a bit tired of putting in the effort. is it worth it or would i just create technical debt? what about security concerns, updates and upwards-compatibility with new php versions to come?3 -
Why does Chromes sometimes suck balls when it comes to caching and reloading updated files on the backend web server?
Sometimes I get stuck in a state where I don't get the whole F-ing site refreshed... until I open a new virgin browser who's never been touched by the web code.
Why can't refresh .. .just REFRESH?
GRRRR6 -
I start website with Databases, it work well but I want to upgrade with new feature.
Some features could be better in an other site.
So I build another website with many features and think about new widget and concept.
I start another one again and again and again...
Does I am the only one to do that? -
Why does a site have two caching plugins? Whoever made this site (that I'm working on improving) needs to get new and updated training.
And why is this site using godaddy shared hosting? I couldn't even update more than two plugins at a time.2 -
watch this
i opened some site on chrome bc i expect new results and there aint none so i figured maybe its bc of the cache of my browser
so i opened firefox
firefox took over 2 minutes to load (yes literally over 2 minutes) and it still DIDNT load the site so i lost patience and closed firefox
i opened internet explorer
internet explorer opened the site in 4 seconds.
chrome > ie > firefox
fight me.
edit: but of course the js on ie doesnt even fkig work so i couldnt do shit either way3 -
Are there any adult sites that frequently update their content with new and interesting videos? I’m looking for a site that keeps things fresh and engaging with regular uploads. Any recommendations?7

How do you go about finding work in the tech industry, to me it seems far harder sell then anything else?
Right now I’m struggling to get new business in since I do websites and apps
It seems because it’s niche and it’s a lot of money to put down it’s a risky sell to someone you don’t really know.
I believe my sites are quite good and I get decent feedback from customers telling me they get good results from their new site
🤷♂️ so I’m a bit at a loss -
Rant/Site idea
This is just a idea, but sometimes rants can create new rant's what need a place of there own, maybe adding a option that lets you Re-Rant or something like this what will take someones reply as the leading rant and you comment as the first reply to that rant, Letting the original rant to say true to its topic5 -
Thank god it's Christmas holidays so i can setup my amazon server for a new site. Normally a admin does it but it's a side project.

Getting a pretty big project for a new feature on the main site, and getting called to change stuff on the existing features every day....

I did an engineering quiz yesterday as a way of introducing a new database the school recently got access to. You had to sign up for the site.
- Passwords were max 20 characters (which is better than 10, but still, why???)
- You couldn't use special characters, but there was NO INDICATION ANYWHERE THAT THAT WAS THE CASE. It would just silently fail to log in. I had to open the browser console to figure out what wasn't working. FUCK -
Hello All, Could you give advise please? I choosing a database for my new Joomla site. Is it better to use PostgreSQL than MySQL for my site? As I could understand PostgreSQL is more stable and safe database And the speed of PostgreSQL comparable with MySQL.9

So, been working for almost 2 weeks now at the new job. Worked fairly much on one of their sites and today they have a meeting with the client regarding this site. Ofcourse now is the moment for this site to be f'd up. OFCOURSE!
-
Made a new site, added a contest to draw people in... People do the contest and never come back F#@K. They don't even hit a single other page on the site

Generally new to programming, building a static practice portfolio site, encounters first few hours of being stumped from coding.
I now understand the struggle of missing semi-colons 🙃 -
Why can't windows just use 'uptime' to show how long the site has been up rather than having to fucking waiting for 'systeminfo' to load.... I'm considering switching over to Linux in the new year, or just buy a new laptop and put Linux on it and use it as my daily driver.4
-
Worst:
Working on a C# project that took ages (to the point it burnt me out) not long after dealing with a relatively simple static site project that ended up incomplete because one of the team members couldn't be arsed in providing the info needed.
Best:
Working on a project where I get to put my UI/UX, software architecture and fullstack dev skills to the test on a problem I have may benefit others, as I started a new job that pays well. -
>sitting in dark room
>working in some dark-theme apps
>opens new site
>site defaults to light-theme (if they even have a dark-theme?)
>eyes burn
>"It's fine, I didn't need those anyways"1 -
It was a bad day :(
asked godaddy support if I could recover my files from a accidentally deleted ftp account.
They said yes we have that and we can recover those files but these servives are not free, price is only 149.99$.
Fuck I could make a new site in that much ammount -
We finally publish the new release of our game (v1.2.1)!! Yuhuuuuuu !!
BUT we change the app's name (removing a space, from Bong Ville to Bongville ) and Google don't want to change it on the results page, and if it wasn't enough big G. suggests Bougainville (that's a plant, a beautiful full of purple flowers plant) instead of our game.
But we are positive 😅✌😉
(Same prob for our site www.bongville.net, that seems to not exist) but again, no prob, we are positive 😅 -
To anyone that can give me advice
I have my main business website, made in WordPress, with all my content.i used Google webmaster tools to request indexing for all the links on my website.i want to change from WordPress to less annoying CMs which is light and fast or I'm even considering using Django.if I build my site again ,and request indexing for all links on my domain
What happens to the old links.and will my new links get indexed?2 -
Okay, so I need a Twitter client library for my Python app. Surely there's a decent one out there, right?
> Goes to Twitter's developer site
There are links to nine different Github repos.
> Takes a look at the one with the most stars
Every method of the API class is @property decorated and returns the result of a function that creates an entirely new class, and then returns a new function that creates an instance of the new class and calls one of its methods that happens to actually make the damn API call.
Alright then...
> Takes a look at the one with the second most stars
All method names are PascalCased.
Please help😭 -
The cesspool project I've bitched about on here a number of times wrapped up about 8 weeks ago. The code was delivered to the client and they took care of their own hosting needs.
They finally got their new site up and running. It looks great and seems to be really performant. Too bad it is complete garbage under the hood. -
me: FE in work, but doing fullstack on my passion projects and somewhat confident on small VPSs - heck, I have a beard, I can do server stuff :) - migrating a WP site that just wont work, copied everything, didn't work, used a migration tool, didn't work, always getting "Connection refused"... must be something with the SSL certificates.. 3 fckn days passed by and nothing when I stumbled upon a forum post with similar issue where the guy stated: I tried all the obvious like copying files, db, certificates, enabled ssl on apache... then it hit me, this is a new installation, I didn't enabled SSL in apache sudo a2enmode ssl restarted apache and BOOM everything is working
part of me was like how stupid you have to be - but the other part is like I guess I learn something every day, this is how you migrate a WP site with the domain #IloveIT -
Please support old web browser versions for all eternity.
I hate it when I open a site like SoundCloud one day and am greeted with a "we no longer support your browser" notice. Now I am forced to update my browser to a new version with removed features. On Android, Chrome sometimes crashes due to an apparent memory leak, so I have to go back to Samsung Internet, which does not work with some sites. Also, the Samsung clipboard manager (which can hold up to 20 items) is only available on Samsung Internet, not Chrome or Firefox.
I also have to update the browser on my live USB bootable stick because sites stop supporting it. Any browser starting in 2015 (ECMA script 6) should be supported until at least 2050 so that I never have to fear that a site one day spontaneously stops working on my browser.
I would like to browse the Internet forever without having to ever worry about pages to stop working one day. Browser vendors might also deprecate support for devices and operating systems. Old devices also have replaceable batteries and are easier to repair. I don't want be forced to buy new devices that are difficult and expensive to repair.20 -
I've got a dev server where I run some test sites in WP using EasyEngine, because I want to get accustomed to WP in Docker.
It asked me to update, and I was like "sure". Now whenever I want to setup a website I get "easyengine couldn't create username"
I figured ok I'll use WordOps, which requires migrating from EasyEngine to it. I was like sure, and next thing I know the "migrated" websites that it was supposed to properly migrate automatically are down, and I can't get an SSL issues for my new site.
All threads on both issues don't help.
It was supposed to be a 5 minute job and it turned into 3 hours trying to troubleshoot. Now I'll spin up a DigitalOcean server and install a quick WP site.
Fuck both EasyEngine and WordOps <3
I thought EasyEngine would be cool but seeing the very limited community activity it's not worth the risk even having it in a dev environment. -
There's no official integration (package) for JWT in Java Spring?
I am new to Java Spring and want to create a simple RESTful server with JWT auth. Checked many tutorials, all of them involved creating your own JWT middleware to retrieve JWT token from incoming request and validate it using some 3rd party JWT library like jwtk/jjwt.
I am surprised this is not as simple as including a Spring JWT package and it would work out of box. I used to write a similar site using Python/Django, and for that adding JWT support is quite simple as adding "xxx.middleware.JWTAuthMiddleware".1 -
I’m worried, as I’m sure many of you are about covid 19 and work drying up. I can work from home but who’s gonna want to get a new site or app done now with so much uncertainty!1

Couple of new colleages started last year.
Working with the new Full stack dev: Your WP site is slow? Try this new shiny CMS and just start all over!
Working with the new designer:
Can you send me the assets? Can you send me the assets? Can you also send me asset A? Can you also send me asset B?
Working with the new project manager:
So is it correct that i’m planned in for five projects today?! -
Transferred wordpress site to new server for a client and it introduces special characters into the text #fun1

Okay, here is the thing. I'm reviewing some changes about a new Pop Up component made in React.
Everything starts as usual; seeing the new code, what they remove, what they added. But for some reason one of my fellows decide to change the whole structure and changing component site to another folder, renaming and doing a lot of stuff not related to what we were suppose to do in that dev.
Am OK with improving code during new additions or tweaks of code but this... this goes too far.
Now am not sure of pushing all the changes to master cause I can't ensure everything will be fine... crap.
That's all, just needed to spell it out. -
!rant
Tldr check out http://guitarprohub.mrstebo.co.uk/
And ignore the stats on the first page. That is my next job to track downloads and searches 😄
I have never been taught how to "plan" projects, but with a small plan I managed to get this site running in about a 3 days (in between having to look after the kids!) only running on a free heroku instance for testing.
If anyone wants to get their hands dirty with the code then let me know. Not a pro at rails yet, but from the stats in new relic it seems to be running pretty quickly! Even with contacting an external site it was only taking 2ms to load a page of tabs! -
well, did not go as smoothly as planned. launched new site, it crashed over and over...
clients posts on FB and the know it all started came from the thin air to point issues and try to steal the customer's bussines. wtf!1 -
!rant Since there was quite some bashing on CMS as of wk60: I want to create a new website for a community I am in but am not really experienced with web development. My plan was to give Joomla a try but after all these rants I am not sure anymore. What made it interesting to me was user management as we have different groups that should manage their own areas on the site. Is it worth a try/what tech should I use?3

Bruh how are you meant to link Chromium snapshot id's to Chromium release versions without https://omahaproxy.appspot.com/ anymore?!?!!?!?!
There's literally not commit data or anything on this page:
https://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/...
And the new site has NO snapshot linking capabilities?!
https://chromiumdash.appspot.com/re...
😭😡1
