(Q: How much are you allowed to Google as a developer?)
“You’re allowed to Google as much as you want. This is not school, you’re employed to solve a problem. Nobody cares whether you Google for the answer or remember the answer from another Googling.”15 -
So after a long day of CSS’ng for building a new form layout, I walk out of work and see this 😨
I swear the universe is cruel at times.9 -

As much as we love to complain about our PMs and coworkers, I feel blessed to be in a field where after working all day, I enjoy what I do so much I come home and work on my own projects. Who's with me?9 -
So after many hours of trail and error I've managed to make a devRant client for ComputerCraft computers in Minecraft. :D
Thanks for hosting the server @ParkCity,
Also, I'll probably upload the source to GitHub some time soon.33 -
I modeled layout of my living room in VR. Now I can take a seat on my couch without taking off my headset :D13

Just saved a life. I was just walking with the dog (it's 3am here) and there was a bleeding drunk on the street - completely unconscious. Must have fallen on his head. Got the police. The paramedics told me a few minutes ago that the guy had a skull fracture. A few hours later it would probably have been too late for him.5

A request to all of you posting these feel-good rants about your past teachers.
Maybe shoot them a message to tell them how much you appreciated them, teaching is a very rough and thankless job for the most part.
It's funny how much it meant to some of my past teachers...4 -
Don't want to go back to work and code, there's much better things to do; Like stay at home and code instead.3
-
Best part of being a dev :
You get to live the stereotype. "She doesn't talk much, she is always on her laptop - coding, always has headphones on. Too much of a geek. Let's not invite her to a party. "
No awkward "Uh , I cant come. " Yay! B-)2 -
Will do a much-security.nl post with answering sent-in questions this weekend.
Please send them to concerns@much-security.nl 😊
Public GPG key can be found at either:
https://much-security.nl/concerns.a... or https://much-security.nl/concerns.h...
Oh and threats (including death threats) aren't much appreciated. They don't really keep me awake at night but if you're one of the people sending them, it's not much fun 😬)17 -
Yay, another item to tick off the bucket list.
- fall asleep during a zoom call ☑️
I think I've hit the point of being so burnt out, even self consciousness is hard to maintain.4 -
Ever have a feeling that there is so many interesting stuff out there - Angular, React.js, TypeScript, Rust, ELM, FRP, Machine Learning, Neuronal Networks, Robotics, Category theory... But no way to ever figure out what are all those about? And there is too little time to even get a good grasp of any single one of those. IT seems to be like hydra - one learns one thing and 10 new concepts pop up in the meantime.4
-
As devs we like to complain about our jobs. But I just want to take a moment and acknowledge how truly amazing writing software is. Nothing else has given me so much joy and happiness. The endless stream of new things to learn, the elusive art of clean code, and deep understanding of systems required for architecture. There is so much depth to this career we have all chosen and I hope you guys love it just as much as I do.5
-
You know you have been using devrant too much when you open it and the algo only gives you rants that you already ++'ed.5

The single most productive thing I've done today was teaching my colleague how to send GIFs over Slack...5

Today I'm going to work on my side project that I haven't touched in weeks.
I want to utilize Angular 2 which means I'll need to learn TypeScript. I also want to use the new .Net Core and EF Core 1.0. Oh and I want to handle authentication using JWT!
Wow, that's gonna be a lot of effort to get things off the ground... maybe instead I'll use this time to learn some new concepts. Maybe watch this episode of Fun Fun Function, or maybe this video on writing Assembly code for an app on Raspberry Pi, that sounds cool!
Actually, you know I should really teach myself dependency injection and unit testing for once. I'm so behind the times.
Well, really I should finish this book on design patterns first. Ok, where did I leave off? Page 20 I think... ehh... maybe I'll just work on my side project.
Tomorrow... tomorrow, I'll work on my side project.9 -
I love the skill requirements section of a junior Dev job advertisement.
To summarise "Basically you'll need all the skills and experience of a senior, but we are gonna pay you much much less". 😔1 -
The company I work at have never used Git or any other version control system...
Today I'm working on making everything ready for Git and removing "backup", backup_old", "fileX.php" etc.
In the end, I'll be happy and the company will be happy for the better management and control.5 -
I'm not usually one to spend much time on my phone but I have devRant for 1w now and I spend so much time on it (not to mention all the smiling and giggling some of the posts cause) it caused a colleague to ask it I got a boyfriend... 😅2

Boss: "How much time do you get this bug fixed?"
Me: "Give me 20 minutes"
*4 hours later*
Me: "fixed is in the repository"
Boss: "You're getting to much time to do your assignments"
Me: *Damn it*
I suck doing estimates 😥7 -
Customer: The pages x and y are not displayed in the menu of my website.
Me: I've added another menu level. This level wasn't planned. Your pages will now be displayed.
Customer: Do you think I have too much menu levels?
Me (what I want to say): YES. You have too much of EVERYTHING! Too much menu levels, too much useless pages, too much bad formatting, too much different font colors in one fucking sentence! Your website is crap at all.
Me (what I said): No, it's okay.
I hate customers.2 -
How much legacy code do I need to understand and fix before I add Software Archeologist to my LinkedIn?6

We get so spoiled with stuff at work that it is starting to show.
Way too much paid personal time during the week makes me lazy.
People bringin biscuits and shit make me fat.
Keurig machines all over the damned place.
Birthday celebrations left and right.
And much....much more and I love it.8 -

A bit late to the party, but then, I was having a party of my own with @Kshitij-goel
'Tis nothing much, how much can a grad student afford?2 -
Crazy weather in here. There is a little sandstorm. It's pretty windy, even the outdoor advertisement letters are moving and the sky is brown :v
The thing is that, in order to go back home, I must walk 4 or 5 blocks (from the place one of my co-workers can leave me), but with this wind I'm afraid of getting sand in my eyes (I don't have glasses). Another option is to take an Uber to my house, but it takes too long to arrive to the office.
What can I do? Do I take the Uber or do I run to my house?6 -
A chick asked how much I earn, and I politely declined to answer.
She seemed annoyed and insisted, nudging me by saying how much she earns.
Again I told her I'd rather not say.
She got mad, started trying to emotionally blackmail me into telling her my salary...
This must be a red flag cuz I don't give two fucks about how much money people I date earn/have and expect them to either respect or share my view9 -
Funny how human brains are never satisfied.
Not much to be done at work today? My job is unproductive and I am wasting my time.
Too much work? You think you fucking own me, bitches!!1 -

Sory for the sad post... have to trow it out and I only trust devrant to do it.... (and not having 20 people following me and never leaving me alone)22 -
The student assistant gave me a half point penalty for writing down to much comments! Direct translation:
To much of this kind of comments is not needed, the code itself is clear on its own.12 -
Why is flutter so unbelievably awesome?
It makes development soooo much quicker and easier compared to native java/kotlin/swift...so much simpler on so many levels, that it still feels somehow ..*wrong*...to me....10 -
"Stop spending so much time on the computer, there so much more to life than just a screen." ok mum.1

Now to actually learn the basics of Github so I don't have to copy and paste my code every time there's an update....6 -
So, is anyone here going to 34c3(*) in Leipzig?
(I'd very much like to, but I have so much studying to do, so I'll stay at a local hackerspace and organize a little bit Congress Everywhere.)
(*)34c3 or the 34th Chaos Communication Congress is the largest hacker meet-up in Germany this year.10 -
am i the only one that finds ui stuff (angularjs+css+makeing it look the way you want-tml etc..) alot harder to master then backend and even low level programming?

An incomplete list of 2018 personal dev goals:
* do more web development (It's fun. In a crude way.)
* finish the smart lamp I started building in 2016 ...
* fix up more electronic devices while learning their inner workings
* learn Python and some other language
* get myself a blog again
* get that testautomation thing which is haunting me in my dreams already to production
* be more relaxed
* do some home automation while not cursing all that much -
Currently learning Kubernetes Cluster. Wow so much to learn.
Much easier to setup any app for a Cluster. Only building the Image takes time 🙄
Containers are the future ✌🏻6 -

Update to https://devrant.com/rants/1415880/...
After numerous emails back and forth my colleague finally came to the conclusion that the customers WSUS is responsible (i might accidentally forgot to mention that in my original mail, oops :) ) but also blamed one of my other colleagues for enabling deduplication on the servers so he can't reliably tell wherever a hard drive is full. (??!?)
But anyway, no beeing sorry for him beeing wrong and impulsively blaming and disabling my scripts, because of course he's not.
I really god damn hate this guy. Were it not for this beeing devRant with a focus on devs i'd have a lot more stories of this special snowflake.1 -
Reading about tasklet and workqueue in linux kernel and this happened:
Caution
The name 'tasklet' is misleading: they have nothing to do with 'tasks', and probably more to do with some bad vodka Alexey Kuznetsov had at the time.
This rant is brought to you by official linux kernel documentation.

How do you guys know how much to ask for freelance work? I'm always scared to ask too much and lose a client1

How much time a week to you spend socializing away from the computer?
More interestingly, how does this compare to how much you would like to be socializing?
No judgement.
Myself. I would say it is around 2-5 hours per week and I wish it was closer to 7-108 -
And here it is, the infinite monkey club

When you have so much work
To do, but can't start any of it until you have the meetings about it. Meetings meetings meetings.2 -
Trying to manage and develop five massive projects does not leave much free time and does not do much for my sanity.3

Switched from Chrome to Vivaldi. Gotta say experience is much more pleasant. Interface is beautiful and customizable to my liking and not such whether I'm imagining it but my laptop battery seems to drain much less2

Graduating from school, To find out that there are much (much) better coders, programmers etc. Out there. Made life all the more interesting.

Just switched from a rent that is below 10% of my salary to a solid 20% one. I feel somehow bad, although the size is much better.
How much do you pay for housing compared to you salary, guys?17 -
This is getting bad, I’ve legit lost track of how many Friday nights in a row I’ve had to work implementations. I know it could be much, much worse. I’m overall very fortunate, but sheesh this is getting old.2

Any other people here that find Python to be actually a harder language than Java? With Java it's much easier to keep track of your code and to track what variables refer to certain object types.
It feels like Python has much more quirks and feels therefore much more inconsistent as a language. Object oriented programming is more verbose with static methods and decorators being vague for example. This makes it harder to grasp concepts like design patterns and SOLID principles in Python imo.7 -
After 4 years of being cautious not to stir the waters it happened again. There was much gratefulness. Then there was much hate. Yesterday I accidentally replaced 17 people department with 3 scripts.9

Boss: How much longer do you think you need to finish feature X?
Me: At least 2 weeks.
...
Me the day after: Well, it seems that I didn't need so much time after all. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -
Feeling the need to know everything about web dev (frontend for now) already yesterday, though not having a clue, what to look at first, as it's its own universe. Everything has a million ways of implementation, combination and features worth looking at.
Already have worked with basic HTML, CSS and JS, had a short look a Typescript, being confronted with React Typescript + Redux + thunk, SASS, learned some basics of all.
Feeling lack of motivation to build smth to learn, yet I want to explore. Afraid to get stuck in tutorial hell, although I know, changing smth here and there in the projects is a must for learning. Feeling the lack of understanding the bits and pieces of what can be styled with CSS in which way. Understanding how npm, webpack, the strange parts of JS, ES6, work.
So ... freaking ... much ....2 -
Why is it so hard to find backend Java developers?
So much work to do... so few people to do it with... -_-11 -
free online tutorials can feel like such a curse.
trying to beef up my java, see's c# tutorial # oooo I should get started on my c# , someone on devrant mentions a framework, drops everything to do that instead, repeat1 -
When asking for a raise, how do you guys know, how much to ask for / how much are you worth?
I've been working as a programmer for the last year and a half, and it's my first real gig in the sector. Without getting into much details, I've currently the opportunity to ask for a raise, but I don't know what would be an appropriate amount or how to research or calculate it.
Any input would be very much appreciated.3 -
College semester exams are going to end after 2 days.....So very much excited to get back to coding after exams.....1
-
I started to like Typescript. It was like c# on the client. Then the amount of lines and functions grew, so it was time for modules. That's pretty much when it went like this for me:
https://hackernoon.com/how-it-feels...
I know it's a year later, but I don't think things have gotten much better since. That was pretty much exactly my experience this year.1 -
I've learned more about stochastic by watching my miserable dqn , trying to determinate whether it's actually learning something or not, than in all the math classes I ever visited.
May write an epic about depths of despair next.
Probably qualified to lead humanity into battle against the machines.
Reconsidering life choices.
Decided never to have children. -
I haven't checked figma plugins much since their announcement, but holy shit scrolling through the list now is nuts, they have so much goodies, open source, things you had to pop into adobe illustrator first too.3

I don’t get why ARM assembly is so much clunkier than it should be. It could’ve been so much more readable and easy to write in if more dev-friendliness was built into the syntax.14

Was at an Angular talk at the Microsoft Center in Munich. The talkers bashed MS way to much. Even for a Linux lover like me.
I wanted to her something about Angular and not how much you hate MS!!!!7 -
So I am wondering. Am I the only one who finds IBM to be a piece of crap that has slow services? I hate them so much, in that they have added so much time to my work!1

Why is there so much hatred for people who use spaces instead of tabs?
I use tabs out of habit but I don't understand why people have to fucking hate the ones who use spaces so much13 -

How much frontend vs how much backend you do?
It's just that I'm going to be in a job with a Full Stack node/vue/ember/AWS/Redis dev role and I don't know how much frontend I'll do compared to the backend stuff, I'm alot more of a backend guy...1 -

Imagine your company would spend 100$ more per employee to rent a bigger, nicer office. Imagine how much additional space you'd have there. Maybe individual offices for everybody, or at least not more than two or three employees per office? Telephone booths for long calls, or a library to work in absolute silence, to do research, or to study something new there.
How would that affect your productivity and overall happiness? How much better you'd feel there? How much more relaxed would you be? How much less sick days would you have, and how much money would your company save resp. make more due to higher productivity?
Or would you rather have a salary raise of 100$?3 -
last day before holidays starts. It was horrible so much to do, organizing, meetings and still no end...
but the rain is droping on the window and this sound make my feels much better1 -
It seems people have loads of time, as so much is spent on this platform. It would be interesting to find out how much total time spent here every day!4

PHP is so much pain to configure when it comes to create an api service. Node is a much better way to go
FUCK u php and fuck XAMPP11 -
Omg my mentor is so toxic... Because it took us to long to program an app. He made a "mobile" version himself. Like we have to use a technology we never used before and certain things like login take way to long he says... I bet if he had to create it he would also have to take a long time to... Whatever I don't care, he got his own app. I see it now all as a learning experience...1
-
I've gone from a "no early returns" guy to a "return as early as possible to maintain the happy path indented as much to the left as possible" guy.
Looks so much neater now. -
Have you deployed ElasticSearch to production? If so, I got couple of questions for you.
How much complexity did ES add to the project overall from a developers perspective?
How much did this differ in price from other solutions you used? In production loads that is.
✌🏼7 -
When they introduce you to an older project and before opening it up they say “well we got much better since then and do much better coding now..”
This is the moment when you know you’re f*cked -
So much dead code. Things that are not used anymore. Things that are expected to work, but don’t because of website redesign. Does it need to be fixed if no one reports it broken? Just so much dead code.💀1
-
Everyone else complains about the lack of tooling, shitty online tools or technical analphabetic coworkers. While all of these happen to devs, they're much, much rarer.
-
Am i the only person who hates reactjs so much?
Jsx , so much nesting, unreadable code. U need to create lots of components and reinvent the wheel everytime u need to add a litle tiny feature. No global logic (controller)
Raaaaah what a mess...4 -
How much do you value alternative benefits to straight $$$?
Obviously subjective, but how much money would you part with for:
Vacation time
Flexible hours
Telecommuting
Equity
Workspace improvement
Other perks1 -
I dont know where to start learning aws. I dont know what is enough to be learned here. Theres SO much shit to learn. SO much stuff going on. Where do i start to learn aws for dev?3
-
My ambition to learn is too much for my own good. I have so much desire to learn and get going that I'm all over the place reading bits and pieces cause I can't seem to get my foot in the door and figure out where to start from the very very beginning to figure out how to start actually learning to code.
-
A tangible result to my code gives me so much satisfaction - this and probl solving is probably the reason I love it so much
