Me: intern in XYZ company
Boss: boss of XYZ
Boss: Why are you taking so much time in developing a simple webpage.
Me: *explains because you asked for so much bullshit to include**
Boss: I can develop it in half an hour.
Me: *-_-*
Boss: I developed a website in PowerPoint when I was intern.
Me: In PowerPoint? How?... Really..?
Boss: Ya, that's the type of skills I have. You're so lazy, you take so much time to make a simple webpage.
Me: -_-22 -
Boss: We are using Angular 1 in our project, right?
Me: AngularJS, yeah, we are using it.
Boss: I heard they have AngularJS 4 now and it's faster and better.
Me: Angular, yeah that's much better.
Boss: So shouldn't we upgrade it? Can you do it this week?
Me: Erm... It's gonna take more than a week.
Boss: How much time do you need?
Me: 6 months, at least.
Boss: What if I put one more guy with you on this? How much time will it take then?
Me: Let me rephrase. It's gonna take 6 months for the entire team to upgrade all the modules in our product to Angular 4. Not including the time to train everyone on Angular and TypeScript.
Boss: Oh, Angular 1 is suddenly seemed to me a better option now.
Me: Smart move 😉11 -
Android studio gradle takes so much time to build. I decided to draw something to kill time whenever it build.
Day 3: Starlord is nearly complete.10 -
Time spent on Web Development :

So after many hours of trail and error I've managed to make a devRant client for ComputerCraft computers in Minecraft. :D
Thanks for hosting the server @ParkCity,
Also, I'll probably upload the source to GitHub some time soon.34 -
*Lazy Friend has IntelliJ and Eclipse*
*Lazy Friend using Notepad++*
Me: Why don't you use IntelliJ? Its debugger really helps..
LF: It takes too much time to start, I don't have that much time..
*continues staring at his screen and using his mind debugger*
It's kinda funny when he just sits and stares at his screen after saying that he doesn't have any time..
It took way less time to find the (a?) bug when he finally used the debugger..7 -
If you are copy pasting code from somewhere else, spend some time and effort to understand what that piece of code is actually doing, and how much of your requirement does it satisfy.1

Every time my mac mini compiles and gives off too much warm air my workmate splits always our table with a cardboard. So i decide to decorate it a little bit...6
-
CAN SOMEBODY STOP THE TIME FOR A WHILE!!!
I HAVE TOO MUCH TO DO AND TOO LITTLE TIME!!!
FML!
PS. WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING IN DEVRANT?4 -
Citizens are advised not to use encryption as decrypting data takes too much time and is costly.
Please spread awareness and save money.
Thank you for Cooperating, have a nice day :)6 -
Having to learn "Modern web technologies" from a 60 year old woman who has never heard of HTML5 and build her website with tables. And we even had to code on paper. Fuck sake, so much time wasted6
-
When you write scripts to automate stuff because you're lazy, but you spend so much time writing them it makes you doubt your own laziness4
-
Hate it when i spend hours upon hours implementing an algorithm/program (in C++ btw) and whenever I show it to someone... They r like
Them: Huh... Spent so much time to display JUST that?!
😭😭
Well... Only programmers understand the amount of time required to get things done...9 -
At this point it's pretty much a matter of time before the English language runs out of words and JS framework developers resort to random strings for naming them.3
-
4 months into my marriage, the "you spend too much time programming" argument finally happened. I guess I could start going to bed before 3am...9
-
devRant is the first time I see so many people announcing to the world how much they like the app. Imagine someone be like "I LOVE Facebook! <3"
Btw, I LOVE devRant! <33 -
I'm not usually one to spend much time on my phone but I have devRant for 1w now and I spend so much time on it (not to mention all the smiling and giggling some of the posts cause) it caused a colleague to ask it I got a boyfriend... 😅2
-
Comment on a GitHub issue on one of my repos:
"Almond I posted this feature request last month, please start to work on it in your free time"
Dude, that's just made it a whole lot less likely I'll even give that feature request the time of day. Take your entitled arse attitude to the bank and pay me to do it if you care that much.
Also, free time?!?! Hahahaha.5 -
!rant
I just asked for a 42% raise having an already good salary and got it easily.
The best thing? I helped this company grow so much I barely work half the time I used to due to the newly hired workforce. I can work on my own projects so much.9 -
Boss: "How much time do you get this bug fixed?"
Me: "Give me 20 minutes"
*4 hours later*
Me: "fixed is in the repository"
Boss: "You're getting to much time to do your assignments"
Me: *Damn it*
I suck doing estimates 😥7 -
my girlfriend told me to stop spending too much time in front of the computer, so I stopped dating *foreveralone*1
-
PM says you are spending too much time testing. Fast forward to a production bug and they are standing behind you while you are frantically coding saying "this should have been tested more".7
-
Sometimes I feel like I shouldn't rely on f.lux to tell me the time... But the fact that it's getting brighter tells me that I probably won't get much sleep tonight...3
-
Do you spend sometimes too much time on making the code look pretty that you forget to implement the f** feature?4
-
I learnt to navigate in Vim 🤩.
Ik it's not much. But had heard so much about Vim and Emacs (tho still don't know why are they so popular, or how to use them), but I kept my distance after the first time I could not quit the application.26 -
Hey guys, I'm here to upvote quality content. I don't have much to rant, so take my support!
Been lurking for quite some time now =)11 -
I was limited to how much time a day I could play video games, but I was told that if I made my own games I could play them as much as I wanted.
I took an HTML course on Codeacademy unaware that it had nothing to do with game dev and that's where it all started.2 -
"You're charging so much for a work you did so little time. "
"It took me years to learn how do that in so little time" -
The worst part about having a job that is not related to programming is that I don't have as much time to code as I would like to :(5
-
I'm new to DevRant
Made an account just to say how much I hate lf-crlf errors. Fucking waste of time. Everytime. Feeling creative? How about spending hours on SO?6 -
Every time I see this picture here on devRant I think of my annoying ass for a co-worker.
Not only does he refuse to listen to me and whines all the time, but when I show him a solution he copies my work right to the last semicolon. And proclaims himself to be God for "coming up with the solution".
Hubris much? -
Those 10 seconds when there is a feature request and you have to answer the question "How much time will it take?" inTheSpot8
-
The reason people never leave a Linux distro is because they spent so much time setting it up their minds are just mentally exhausted to ever think of doing it again.3
-
I wonder if flappy bird dev is in this community. Anyway, I want to ask you guys - What would have you done if you were in his situation?
I hear he removed the game after he saw people are wasting too much time on it.
People waste too much time on porn, Facebook, YouTube and what not. I don't understand his reasoning behind removing the game.
Anyway, what would have you done?25 -
Best time to learn something new?
-Now
Best way to learn something new?
-By doing it. Practice makes perfect.
I wasted so much time and never got anywhere because I wanted to get it right. Fucking up is part of the learning process.2 -
about:DevRant
Every time I write a comment or a rant, I edit it a bazillion times. I try to fix up spelling, grammar and wording.
Who else edits their rants and comments too much?7 -
my mind is multithreaded but can not physically execute more than one thread at a time.
i.e. i want to say 5 sentences in the same time bc im too lazy to wait and say them one by one after a specified delay of time, so i fuck myself over while speaking.
like atomic regions, i bust a few words from time to time from different sentences i have in mind and it ends up not making any sense to what im saying, but it does in my head.
so this is what too much covfefe and sleepless coding nights does to people12 -
First time web developing for real. Didn't realise I needed to clear chrome cache. So much wasted time!4
-
Programming helped me realise, that I'm growing.
Since I've learned git long time ago, all my projects are archived and I can get back to them. When I look at my old code, I can see, how much I've learned, and how much more of a developer I've become.
And it motivates me to keep going.4 -
As lead developer I was not allowed to implement automated testing as "we don't have time for that" - you have no idea how much time it would save!6
-
We get so spoiled with stuff at work that it is starting to show.
Way too much paid personal time during the week makes me lazy.
People bringin biscuits and shit make me fat.
Keurig machines all over the damned place.
Birthday celebrations left and right.
And much....much more and I love it.8 -
I've spent too much time online... I'm in a zoom meeting, I missed what someone said, reached to my keyboard to rewind then realised it was live... 🙈13
-
Every time I start a new project, I spend too much time on unnecessary things like picking an IDE to use or a name for the project2
-
"How much time would it take you to implement $some_feature ?"
DAMN IT, I hate being asked for estimates on friday. Reminds me that I have to work again on monday.5 -
Wrinkles appear on their forehead(s) when I spend too much time on computer. Their voices become loud but then I say - "This is going to earn me my bread."
All good. Good life :) -
Sure you know this one:
* Mobile project with realtime notifications
* CEO asks for push implemented with own sockets instead of using firebase or gcm
* Spends loads of time of money and time
* Asks to dev why It costs so much
* Blames the dev for socket implementatiom2 -
Gradle taking too much time to finish?
No problem I make it show me its status at the bottom of each website I visit ¯\_(ツ)_/¯5 -
When you're stuck on the same error for so long, you try so many different things and by the time you get it to work, it feels like you've made so much progress. But once you take a step back you realize you really haven't done much.4
-
All I want for Christmas is.... for Windows 10 search bar to respond and work in a reasonable amount of time and not suck so much.3
-
I have got so much of free time that this Quarantine has got me thinking What Should I Name my Class?
How Long do You take to name your class?8 -
My job forces me to work 9-6 with a one hour lunch. Since I am forced to be full time wfh, I eat while working and take a nap during my "lunch".
I am much more productive.5 -
Just start to use VSCode from sublime, and found out , I have wasted so much time on only using "console.log" as my main node.js debug weapon. ( Or I am still a dummy for Sublime )3
-
Working on my senior project tonight I went from "oh my god I'm so far behind I'm never going to get this done in time" to "I can't wait to show my advisor tomorrow because I've gotten so much done"
Feels good -
After using so much VIM and VIM key binds in other IDEs, a piece of me dies every time I have to code without them.
Am I the only one?4 -
When u spend too much time writing Java and suddenly go back to C# yet continue to write Java code 😪4

Me, about to head out for work: Hey I wonder how much time I have left before the train departs
Clock: 02:00
Me: fuck I did it again
Waking up thinking it's time to start the day and then figure out you can still sleep for 4 hours, while having already showered, put clothes on, eaten breakfast6 -
> Tells client, if content isn't hosted on their server somewhere, we'll have to update the app every time they need new content
> Client refuses saying it will take too much time and effort to maintain
*Several weeks later*
> Get email from client asking to update the app because content is out of date
> I want to reply with 'Sorry no can do, it will take too much time and effort to maintain'8 -
Never tell normal people (non-developers) how much time it took you to build something.
They will always be like 'I thought that was a 2-day work'3 -
Fucking piece of shit xorg and amd drivers. Wasted so much time trying to fix screen tearing and nothing works, only managed to kill xorg altogether
Added a pic of the tearing15 -
I got my stickers nearly a week ago, didn't have the time to stick them and snap a picture of it, but now I've done it :)
Thank you so much @dfox for these, they're awesome ;)2 -
Funny how human brains are never satisfied.
Not much to be done at work today? My job is unproductive and I am wasting my time.
Too much work? You think you fucking own me, bitches!!1 -
Why ? Why is there no time left for the cool stuff? Spending too much time at work - beeing tired- bought a new rasp-pi - it's already 1 year old - untouched @ home ... just why?
had holidays ... spent 4 days of 7 to recover - just slept.2 -
Not sure if this counts as a dev skill but
Not needing sleep anymore.
Imagine how much time you had if you didn't need to waste several hours a day just sleeping4 -
First week is over at my first job in Web development. Really happy about the salary and the company, can't wait to Monday! 😁 though I don't have much time to my private projects, that sucks.3
-
I've spent so much time writing terms and conditions, I'm tempted to list it as a feature of my app2
-
Playing guitar and bass is one of my biggest, also weight lifting and videogames. I have not had much time to read books recently, but I do try and keep up with the novels that interest me from time to time.
The rest of my time is spent with my family. I also like going to my friend's ranch to fish and shoot at things. I love ranching, because, well... Texas. -
Devrants mobile data usage is so low. Really love don't needing a good connection and don't using to much of my mobile data when using it :)
Also: Grammarly STOP auto-correcting devrant to servant ALL THE TIME...5 -
As the founder (both biz and tech) of a startup, here is my timer list everyday. It reminds how much time I left before the day ends and how much tasks waiting for me to finish.29
-
Starting new game development project.
Coder:" ok guys, I think that this time we have to focus much more on sprints management and documentation"
Designer:"Ye, this time we should use better scrum software, like jira or youtrack"
Artist:"but Asana has the unicorns when you complete a task"4 -
*Program crashes*
Colleague looks over my shoulder : While loop?
Me : ...while loop.
It's been two years...my brain just refuses to write non-infinite while loops. I tend to avoid them as much as I can cause every time, without fail, first time I create one I crash something.2 -
>Learning programming at university for a couple of years
>Get introduced to lots of IDEs
>After hours of tweaking things one by one finally perfect settings of said IDEs
>Hear about devRant
>Browse devRant
>Whats this Vim thing they all love so much?
>MFW so much wasted time setting up all those IDEs14 -
Not sure why Firefox is taking too much resources. It's just one tab with gmail login page. And only one add-on is active (AdBlock Plus). Guess it's time to switch to chrome.21

"Stop spending so much time on the computer, there so much more to life than just a screen." ok mum.1

> Drinking much because it's a hot day.
> Have to go to the toilet
> Cleaner is cleaning the toilets so nobody can go.
Every fucking time gaaaarh2 -
SHIT. Power cut, don't know yet how much code lost, train of thought destroyed. 2 hours to wait to find out. Time for a 4g wank methinks.3
-
Today is haut garbage, too much stupid, too much management. Feeling nihilistic. Time to do something crazy
*updates linux-firmware6 -
F*cking windows and thair stupid alternative line endings. Spend way to much time on trying to make my bash file work. Aparently i copied some command from a website that used windows endings. Wich f*cked everything up6
-
Wanna know how to piss off an entire dev team?
Agree that progressive isn't good enough, must be native.
And supporting ie7 & 8 won't take much extra time or effort...2 -
Ranting too much on Windows updates comes with karma.
(I know, I guess it’s about time to clean its screen)11 -
My company has been looking for a project time tracking and reporting app/website for 2 years but are too cheap to buy one. So they want me to develop one to their specifications which are forever changing. Let's say I've intentionally wasted so much time "perfecting it". it's been done for 2 months.6
-
Arrived. After making the order, the company contacted me to make sure its not a misstake :D I'm having so much fun (wasted time) with this ancient tech.8
-
Managers interrupting you to complain that X takes too much time instead of letting you work on X to finish it in time.
-
Maybe I'm just crazy, but it drives me nuts when people don't use keyboard shortcuts. It takes so much more time to right click to copy and paste!
-
FLOATING POINT PRECISION! FUCK YOU! Spent so much time trying to figure out what was wrong with an algorithm I made to calculate and correct bounding only to finally realise, after printing out every single variable and calculating everything manually to realise the value was off by 0.0001 which made it skip an if statement. Ughhhhhhhh, so much freaking time wasted3
-
Finally have some time again to make my bot that notifies me of interesting jobs and filters out things like "wordpress", into a dashboard that lists all jobs, automatically removes ones that are gone or have too much bids and much more, so excited 😄4
-
However pathetic it may sound, I haven't. I've made good acquaitances, yes. But friends...
Last I had friends was in my first uni years. Long, long ago. After that - they went on their path and I - on mine. Work, family, personal projects and sometimes moto rides - that's my life now. Not really much time for friends. Not really much time to make any. Not enough time in a day to think/worry about it, not to mention reconsider my priorities/choices.5 -
I’m now preparing to switch jobs.
I hate interviews so much. Time to grind puzzles that I’ll never use in my real work.4 -
It's depressing how much time I spend asking, begging, demanding, and pleading for the older devs on my dev team to follow simple naming conventions. And every time I ask, they act like it's new information.3
-
Been really bored with programming-as-a-hobby lately, so I decided to give that a break and switch to physics for a while.
Man I've forgotten so much, time to revisit the Feynman Lectures books.4 -
Me coding and researching to fix new things everyday and people come to me saying:
"You are working too much"
And I'm thinking: actually, its a never ending learning job, I dedicate so much because almost everyday I learn at least one thing.
But knowing that non-tech people have a hard time around it I just answer: yeah.3 -
This was a much needed vacation.
Was working non stop for last 6 moth. Went to my native place, enjoyed time with my parents and frienss.4 -
Got an interview call from one company yesterday. They wanted to know how much active are mine GitHub and Stackoverflow accounts. When I asked how much time they give to employees to promote open source and community work, they didn't had any answer. Seriously? Wtf. At least don't ask if you don't promote open source and community contribution.2
-
"Can you teach us how to do x? If not, how much would you charge for doing it yourself?"
Bitch, my time is valuable, if I teach you, I'm gonna charge you anyway... -
!Rant.
When you begin to terminate sentences with semicolons; And it feels more natural than using a period. You know you've spent too much time coding;1 -
You can compile sass straight to c on a Mac instead of going to ruby first... I've wasted so much time. 11 seconds to compile --> .4 now 😑3
-
- Make it engaging, and avoid too much bullshit.
- Everyone should get to air their concerns, regardless of your position, everyone should have a say of the matters being discussed.
And for the love of god, compress it, don't make it unnecessary long. It's not fun to attend something that takes an hour of your working time, because time is precious and you lose time to fix shit.1 -
I have so much learning and projects I'm really excited to start. Now if only I can find the time for it.. 😓2
-
I work for a quite small company (4 people) and about 3 years ago, there was this guy from Bolivia who was an intern for graphics and similar stuff, nothing related to programming.
Turns out we got to be quite friends and still hang out from time to time now.
Best thing was when boss wasn't at the office for like a week and we hadn't much to work on, so we spent time smoking, eating, chatting and watching movies... very great time! -
I kind of just came to an insight that my computer is sort of my partner in crime.
I "teach" it how to do something that I'm probably better of not doing or should do in moderation... But then it gives me access to so much of the stuff, I spend a lot more time doing it... more effectively.
So I actually don't save much time because it makes it easier so I now do even more...
I would post some screenshots but its uhh..... NSFW... at least this one is.25 -
I *cannot* be the first person in history that wants to do this.
Someone much smarter than must have already done, packaged it and sold distribution rights to the T-shirt.
Time to Google the sh*t out of it... -
Why can't meeting organizer enforce time schedule, especially ending?
It's pretty much normal to stay 1,5 hour on 1 hour meeting.1 -
Client: "When will feature X be ready? How much time to you need?"
Me: "Well, considering the size of the feature it will probable ta..."
Client: "You have exactly 8 minutes to finish or I'll throw a tantrum."
A bit exaggerated, but it pretty much sums up my job. -
I always spend a lot of time thinking about the responsiveness of my designs, often I get stuck for some time due to random images, backgrounds etc not fitting the device size and then I check other sites to get inspired and get disappointed and sad how most developers just don't give a shit and either the background just gets cut off, images just hidden instead of aligned for example to the left further down the content and so much more, am I the only one spending so much time into getting my sites/designs perfect across any device and screen size?
-
I am a noob as of now. So much to learn! So little time. Its so difficult to juggle between learning new things and academics!3
-
how do u guys get motivated to start coding?
I'm pretty much have a lot of time this week (holidays) and i want to spend on my own project.
but i just not strong enough to start..14 -
i am a weak developer, i dont know that much of what im doing, unexpected things come up, i dont like time estimates (estimating time is harder than complexity estimates), some school of thoughts dont like estimates https://youtube.com/watch/...
my manager posed a thought exercise to me, imagine im a contractor (im not, clearly not skilled enough to be) , contractors can estimate how much time precisely a task will take to do their work, get jobs, etc
is it possible to learn this power? how does one git so gud, walk in learn how existing code base works, change, edit , build on top of it, ideally doing quality work8 -
So today I'm going to join Reddit
Tell me subreddits where I can learn more and at the same time it doesn't go too much above my head
Interests in which I'd like to invest time:
Machine learning
Statistics
Distributed systems
Or general computer science research
Suggest me6 -
I feel kind of useless. Since I quitted F.I.T. The only reason to look on my mobile phone now is to check devRant...
So much time. You only realize when you're gone.2 -
Programming smth complex is literally time traveling. My clock goes in these steps:
20:00 -> so much time left
22:00 -> time to wrap up soon
02:00 -> wut? Impossible
The type of projects I do is quite limited to standard library so I also don't spend time on reading docs of some dependency. I make everything myself. Afterwards, I look up what the way to go is how others do it and compare. Mostly, I don't adjust, it's just smth for next time. That's the whole hobby. Just keep going6 -
After many days of going through my first time LFS experience, I have finally booted into my new lfs system with no problems :) Seriously the coolest feeling seeing it boot for the first time knowing how much brain power I had to put into it. Cant wait to continue the LFS journey!2
-
I want to learn so much programming languages, go with so many personal projects.
But I have no time !
Sad Me. who is else have this situation3 -
"we use story points as an estimate for how much time something will take to complete" or "X story points means Y days of work"
fucking kill me4 -
I've decided to take a look at flutter today and boy... I must say I hate writing layout for it.
Not cause of all those margin thing no.. It's just too verbose, awful.
I don't want to spend that much time writing the UI, I want to focus on the logic.
Even XML was better than that.
I think I'll wait for a layout editor before coming back to it.
But I have to admit that hot reload is really nice after spending so much time waiting for my builds on Android 😓7 -
Who else hates Teams here? I really think it's one of the worst programs I have to use from time time. It's full of overly complicated features and bad UX design. Slack is soooo much better and more user-friendly.7
-
Fuck timesheet
It's bad enough someone fucking disturb you in the middle of great thoughts. What's worse, you're QUESTIONED where the fuck your time was spent. So you need to work out how much time you have been disturbed, and put in the fucking timesheet!
What a fucking joke! As if we have too much time for meaningful stuff.8 -
Software engineering isn't a great side-career if your aspiration is to do other things.
It takes way too much of your time to let you do anything else.5 -
Currently learning Kubernetes Cluster. Wow so much to learn.
Much easier to setup any app for a Cluster. Only building the Image takes time 🙄
Containers are the future ✌🏻6 -
spent the entire day trying to get ssl to work 😩
it works now, but honestly, it's draining to spend so much time on config4 -
Jeez I am so bored of this shit life, people are fucking rude and mean. I am wasting so much time waiting for people or things to happens, I spend my free time trying to solve shitty problems and waiting for updates to end.2

000WEBHOST IS SO MUCH SHIT IN ONE PLACE
Nothing on their website is working, every time internal errors and default loading times at up to 1.2 sec
SHITTY HOST!9 -
"This semester I will take more time for my personal projects"
Week one, having to organize all the uni stuff
Week 2-4, too much homework, no time
Week 5-7, fucking midterms
Week 8-9, too much homework
Week 10, finally time to relax a bit. Probably not going to work on my project. Fuck my time planning, fuck the day for only having 24h.2 -
Immortality, but like the good kind where you stop aging. Because i could learn so much stuff in all that time and tbh who wants to die5
-
A Bible app for Android called Tour the Bible. It uses the Google maps API to put a pin in each location as you read so you can follow along and virtually "tour" the Bible.
I had a basic version built but then I switched to Kotlin then I pretty much completely rewrote it to use an api for the Bible content instead of plain .txt files. I still try to work on it in my spare time but with a family, full time job, full time school and part time freelancing I don't get much spare time.2 -
Just realized that the scroll position indicator dances when scrolling through a long list of comments 😄, and I think that's beautiful1
-
Does anybody has an idea what to "code" when you have too much free time? I am done with school and waiting for my university acceptance. No Websites.
TL;DR
Project ideas?13 -
Tried to install Ubuntu on a Virtualbox. Wasted so much time and effort just to get it running.
Got so fed up, ended up getting a hosted one at Digital Ocean.8 -
I took a day off work to go enjoy camping.
I've never felt so much anxiety about work at this time. I feel like I need to be working right now.4 -
npm is the WORST MISTAKE THAT HAS EVER HAPPEND TO SOFTWARE ENGINEERING. I HATE IT AND I REGRET EVER READING ITS DOCUMENTATION, SO MUCH WAISTE OF TIME ON ABSOLUTE JUNK8
-
The one time I post to Stack Overflow for the answer to the problem I found get downvoted. WTF. There's so much filtering and elitism on that site.
Back to being a lurker.4 -
Management noticed that employees are spending too much time on social media sites such as stackoverflow and ordered IT to block it2

Well, look at the brighter side Android developers, that long time gradle takes to build gives you the much needed break, doesn't it?undefined gradle sync my ass android studio time wasted android dev android gradle gradle kills on i34

I hate websites that heavily relies on javascript for showing webpages.
Debugging in deep "pages" is so much time consuming.
Also, it is not possible to link to specific inner "page" since url stays same.1 -
Currently we have zero time for R&D at work, now I have convinced management to let me try and convince them to arrange some time per week/sprint(2 weeks) or month
How should I approache this? And how much time would be optional (enough time for prototyping but still leave more than enough time for the projects we have) ?
Any tips that you have for negotiation/convincing management would be greatly appreciated!! 😁😁3 -
when you spend way too much time trying to figure out why something isn't working and its because you didn't clear the cache

Trying to manage and develop five massive projects does not leave much free time and does not do much for my sanity.3

Having a teacher that tell us not to spend too much time on his homework.
Having the same teacher to ask us to do a project in Smalltalk, while nobody has understood the language.
It hurts.4 -
First job starts in June, so I guess my first rant is that I don't have much to rant about (yet). Time to lurk .-.
P.S: Google why 4 notifications for new device sign-ins :[ -
How much time a week to you spend socializing away from the computer?
More interestingly, how does this compare to how much you would like to be socializing?
No judgement.
Myself. I would say it is around 2-5 hours per week and I wish it was closer to 7-108 -
After responding to that rant asking our ages I realised how much fucking time I have wasted. I'm not afraid of aging, but man, if I had started learning programming two or even one year ago I'd know so much more right now. But fuck, I've been procrastinating life for 21 years. 21 FUCKING YEARS!5
-
Pretty much when i stopped listening to the same old "my printer is jammed" requests in helpdesk and saw a friend dev earn twice as much as i dis at that time without dealing with (that many) idiotic situations.
A few years later - i'm a happy little coder. And i have my own minions to deal with support. Seniority rules :D3 -
Guys I have so much work to do, and here I am procrastinating on devRant.
Anyone else here wasting there time? :D
(not really... DevRant is too cool to be considered a waste of time) -

TIL: If you want to use SodaStream the you better RTFM... Fuck, there is water everywhere and I really don't have the time to clean up the mess because there is so much work to be done today...6 -
So, WPA2 was proven not fully secure. Wonder how much time it will take for most devices to be patched...2

Have Pocket app.
Save awesome article/site to Pocket.
Swear to read it later.
Open pocket app after a while.
Shit so much saved.
Can't read all of this no time.
Thus begins the infinite loop.4 -
the first time I opened StackOverflow actually I think.
At least that was the first time I understood how much I still don't know about any topic at any one time.
Since then I think I was humbled enough to just assume I know nothing all the time and just being glad when I get to help someone with their problem -
I forgive Microsoft for all the bugs on W10. Why? Because Cortana on Android mirror notifications from phone to PC smoothly. Saving so much time. And I get to know if I miss calls or messages. Brilliant.6

How much time has passed since the first you started programming to the first time your earned money?8

A puzzle for you guys(not my invention, so contains bugs):

OH MY GOD REFACTORING FEELS SO AWESOME
I just finished spent 4 weeks of crazy busy summer camps and I get back to a project I was working on.
Refactoring.gif
It feels so awesome to just effortlessly move stuff into methods and have it work pretty much first time.
To be fair I’m the only one working on this right now so I pretty much already knew the code but still holy cow it’s so much simpler now.
Moral of the story: Appreciate your time off and use it to unwind and let your mind wander to more creative heights before taking advantage of it after and only after you get back to the project1 -
I had to sit through a meeting, which we discussed how to make our meetings more effective. In the end, we decided we were being effective already and too much process was a waste of time

I have desktop pc that I use for gaming on windows from time to time but most of time it stays turned off.
My gaming experience is usually:
1. turn it on
2. wait for windows update
3. turn it off
Doing same quest over and over, how I’m supposed to get to the next level ?
I don’t have so much time for gaming.7 -
Noooooo... all I wanted is to quickly reboot to Ubuntu! Why Windows, why?!?!?! So much time wasted staring at this screen, so many lines of unwritten code...6
-
React native is such a pain to get started with! I feel like Ive wasted way too much time just trying to set up a functioning example. I'm too stubborn to give in. I'm about to rage code right now lol6

We are working on an AngularJs 1.x project for a long time now. Maybe we’ll use it forever because we will never be allowed to rewrite the whole app with much timely tools 💆🏻♀️

I spent half a month shifting my code base from express to you in view of better performance and what not.
I made a bad decision. I've wasted so much time.3 -
Since I’ve started this new job (Restaurant Server) I haven’t had much time to code and it’s annoying.3

What do you think how much time will it take to crack Creative Cloud 2019?
I bet 2 weeks from now.6 -
It gets fucking old, yet it always keeps coming back like Christmas.
If I had a fucking euro each time a CTO asks me why they need CORS and TLS to use webrtc (even on LAN??!1! 🤯), I'd be fucking rich.
At least this time the time I wasted explaining it again was paid for at a much higher rate...7 -
Is it just me or Jira has been getting so much worse over time, that I now don't even want to touch it?9

Got an invite for Google foobar challenge.
Successful completed 2 challenges.
It is so much fun to work on complex problem especially with a time bomb attached to it. -
Revenge and breakups dont make one a criminal. BUT, when you have written about 10k lines of code and someone come and says "It took so much time to add just one button", DOES! -_-

Question - my field is information security (or cyber security if you want to think of me as a time lord), but I wanted to know;
Front end and back Devs, how much time do you spend on security issues and/or implementing security measures?10 -
Why is cd so anoying. I tried serval stuff with all kind of setups. But everything just doesn't work good or really expensive. I just want a easy way to have a develop and production environment without to much problems or an high price card.
Does anyone havr any tips. Already wasted so much time on it8 -
Ever happened to you that you sat for a project of yours and get into it so much that by the time you get exhausted it's already night.4

So on top of having way too many hats at work and starting my master’s studies in a few weeks, I just had an idea for a game that’s too good to not start working on. I am drowning myself in shit to do. Again.

What to reply to a person who insist to use procedural php for developing website(with lot of services ofc) instead of framework which uses OOP concepts?
And says it will take too much time to learn those concepts and to implement it.1 -
I hate Windows! BSOD and many other *famous* errors waste my time resolving them.
This happens to me every 6 months and it is so fucking annoying !
The system repairs are so fucking futile! They take so much time *attempting repairs* and in the end give me a failure message.3 -

My project manager wants to automate a task. We tried to estimate how much time we would save... It is the full 5 minutes in a year (excluding time needed to update said script & append new functionalities)

Lately I've been coming to the realization of how much time social media and YT takes from me and Ive been trying to cut back a lot. YT is definitely the platform that takes the most time from me, so I decided to give it up for the time being. To me RN the landscape of YT is boring and repetitive anyways so I don't mind.
Yesterday was the first day and I was definitely feeling better. My head was not hurting as much, my thoughts were clearer, and I was able to focus on other things. -
Thank you those who tried to help me with my problem but I'm still not the best at this even though I've been doing for quite some time. I'm sorry I used some much of your time earlier also I apologize for calling out @example-user3

Boss: How much longer do you think you need to finish feature X?
Me: At least 2 weeks.
...
Me the day after: Well, it seems that I didn't need so much time after all. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -
This is a rant.
Sorry rant community...I haven't had so much time lately. Too much work to do, and you reminded me that it's passed quite a lot of time from the last login. And for you I meant the rant community developers!
I will be here more often in the future!1 -
OCD driven development
- level of recursion determined by how much the algorithm bothers you
- too much and nothing is ever finished
- not enough and code is shitty and unmaintainable
- can result is longer variable names
- takes longer to name a variable
- text slightly misaligned requires hours of debugging time
- balanced by "OMFG that will take forever to fix" Sometimes...
- can lead to unobjective code reviews1 -
Anyone have books or blogs about microservices and APIs they like?
I spent so much time focusing on front end frameworks and technologies and now I'm having to teach myself RESTful API structures and micro service stuff. I should have spent more time on this earlier on...6 -
Juat started a redesign of my portfolio & this is first time I've actually been genuinely happy with it. Every other time I just say fuck it and launch with a design I'm not happy with because I wasted so much time trying to make it perfect that I'm not focusing time on client work and losing money.
tldr: stoked on my new portfolio design -
i was thinking i should kill myself if AI can design websites and write programs in the future.
so i dont have much time, what is the best way to commit suicide?5 -
When I work from home, I probably spend less time working, but I do it seriously
When I work in the office I spend most of the time I would not actually work, pretending to work and probably time spent in actual work is much less
But I guess that better performances in work from home, do not feed automotive industry… -
I spend the last two days to write a super tiny piece of the web thingy i want to create, a javascript that builds tables from the data the php backend provides. I am mostly clueless but i learned so much along the way..yet, it still feels like i accomplished anything at all.
163 lines of javascript, so less, so much time. At least its pretty much universal as long as i build the backend right (which is pretty easy).6 -
OMG it's suprising when you write down a code that run in the first time without an error :O I love Rust so much and I will never go back to C++ :D1
-
Hi )
I was wondering how do you guys who work or have worked as freelancers price your websites/projects.
I never had a client before and I don't want to spoil my first chance by pricing too high or too low.
I've heard people asking for 500 dollar or 2000 dollars, depending on how much work and time is involved.
How much would you ask for a simple personal website or a restaurant website?
Thank you very much for your time )5 -
Literally unlimited? Everything buildable.
Figuratively unlimited? Games. I want to make games but they're very time consuming. If I had so much time it would seem a lot on an exponential scale I'd finally be able to make games without the feeling of wasting my precious time ruining all the fun.5 -
Started with Codeforces. Some solutions in Python exceeded time limit at test #25. Wrote the same code in C++ but this time it exceeded time limit in test #33.
What’s the solution to this ? Replacing cin/cout with scanf/printf doesn’t seem to make much of a difference.6 -
Use less dev rant. Yes I know it's ironic to post this here, but I waste way too much time on browsing through posts every day :/
-
Quite frankly im embarrassed to say how much time i wasted having no idea why my pipeline is failing because it cant login to my aws account3
-
Client gave late template for website and system, after that fpdf for live site wont work, too much to do so little time.

Finally reached a point where I’m too tired to keep my eyes open for much longer. Need a long nap and a rest from all screens.
Siesta time.2 -
"How much time do you think I need to deploy my Symfony Project?"
"Well about an hour, I think"
It's been 8 now and I'm still getting errors3 -
In Belgium were I live it takes twice as much time to devRant than in France or in the US. You know why?13
-
For me, the biggest distraction is definitely hunger. It just pops up sometimes and overtime it gets unbearable. And then I need to cook something. So much wasted time.

So I am wondering. Am I the only one who finds IBM to be a piece of crap that has slow services? I hate them so much, in that they have added so much time to my work!1
-
That feeling when you decide to do something cause "it'll save so much time and boilerplate later on!" Just to have it take you all night
-
I started to like Typescript. It was like c# on the client. Then the amount of lines and functions grew, so it was time for modules. That's pretty much when it went like this for me:
https://hackernoon.com/how-it-feels...
I know it's a year later, but I don't think things have gotten much better since. That was pretty much exactly my experience this year.1 -
Every time I have to touch a webpack config I remember Geocities much more fondly. Hell, even Frontpage wasn't so bad really.
-
If you want to increase your rate of progress, spend as much time as possible doing the activity you want to get better at. Volume leads to good things over time.1
-
Break ups are like errors.
You get them all the time,
You try to fix them but accidentally make more of them,
And no matter how much you try you get thousands more.1 -
I would like to completely communicate via email to obtain clients. Not Skype; that is clients calling me through Skype and the phone. Has anyone done this? I've found that phone calls/Skype wastes so much time. Time that could be spent gaining a client and starting their project. However people love the phone calls and Skype way too much.10
-
How much time do you take usually to code a backend with simple crud operations and notification system?
It's taking me some time, but I feel I'm going too slow...7 -
Constantly changing conventions for everything, like naming and code formatting conventions.
And the worst part is, I do this several times during one project.
Either I have a project with different conventions or I have to redo a lot.
Most of the time I try to do the last and this costs so much time -.-' -
Omg my mentor is so toxic... Because it took us to long to program an app. He made a "mobile" version himself. Like we have to use a technology we never used before and certain things like login take way to long he says... I bet if he had to create it he would also have to take a long time to... Whatever I don't care, he got his own app. I see it now all as a learning experience...1

c3tools
I want to finish it so badly. I have everything I just need time.
JJittai
Every time I see the code I wanna dance. I want to work on that so much but I haven't in a long time, I want to refactor everything (I've changed a lot in that time), it will be so delicious.
If you are curious about them you can see them in my github account.
And of course the rest but with these I'd be so satisfied. -
It wastes so much time when every time you have to learn to browse the documentation before being able to use an API.... Why does documentation have to be so complicated1

Fuck flutter fuckery

This vacations I decide to learn c# in VS, it's cool but the time the compilation and debugging is so much, literally I can write a book in this moment4
-
So much to read, so much to learn.. !!! Then by the time I actually get it down and have a job interview, I'll be ******** bricks. Lol.
-
Am I seeing multiple month old posts on my feed here because I wasn't really using devrant much till like three days ago, or is it because I've spent so much time on it that all the recent posts have been exhausted?
Deactivated instagram a few days ago and switched over to devrant as the primary procrastination social media. This is a much better place but it feels slightly odd to comment on a month old post.2 -
Today I'm finally gonna do my taxes! Time to see how much more I need to pay the dysfunctional government 😟😤😞😖
What tax software do you recommend using (US)?6 -
Took a long time to update to high sierra yesterday. Doesn't seem like much has changed, apart from some shinier icons. Oh and now having two different passwords for some reason?2

Took me a quite long time to learn ignoring that. -
It seems people have loads of time, as so much is spent on this platform. It would be interesting to find out how much total time spent here every day!4

Perfect idea really
Gradually grab all pixel locations that fit space constraints

Purpose ? Extract shapes to feed my damn neural network for custom character recognition
So much goddamn time wasted
Bastards I hate you all !3 -
Why does xcode take so much time to install? I am come on! I wasted 4 hours and it still isn't done.13
-
What tools do you use to manage how much time you needed to get stuff done?
Any tool where I can stop time and also add things like had a meeting for 1h and so on.2 -
I'd have the power to lint developer brains so they'd write clean code and I wouldn't spend so much time refactoring crap.2
-
Picked up the latest version of Test Driven Development work Python. Haven't done much test driven development so time to change that .
-
I noticed that there's no scroll position indicator on Android. Would be nice to be able to see exactly how far down I've scrolled and how much time I've wasted on devRant. Food for thought.5
-
I could slack around all the time and then switch to "the devil" mode in the last week. Oh and I could use mumbo jumbo words to confuse the shit outta my clients(and boss). Plus I could automate maintenance job and get so much time at 'hand'(quite literally)

Every time I look at the web pack config. I wonder what the fuck does this term mean? Then I need to YouTube the term. Simpely google does not help much

What's the most stable distro/flavour I could use? After working with neon KDE for a bit and havin to fix stuff, from grub to system drivers, I just don't have much time left for actual coding in my spare time. Should a I just go for Ubuntu?8
-
Happened to me on my current project, a client said "I know that we'll have some budgetary restrictions, so I prefer to ask you a lot of features now, 'cause I don't know much time the dev team will stay...".
Thank you for making our project fail by asking too much ... -
every time I encounter code that's not rust I get jealous because it's so much easier to understand what it's doing lol
but it's also ugly tbf4 -
Never have I wanted to drop kick my computer out the window as much as I do right now for my first time attempting to create an Oracle Database

Has anyone of you ever dreamed of solving programming problems? I wake up still thinking about a problem that is totally unrelated to everything I do. Most of the time I even spent extra time still pondering about it even tough I'm very much awake. Maybe I need to stop staying at the office for 10 hours.2

Every single time that I realised how much of my expertise sounds like vaporware to people, mostly management and C-level.
Have been working on security for quite some time now but seeing that I can't really get through make me feel useless and not worth my weight in shit.1 -
Not sure why people love mechanical keyboards so much? Maybe they aren't old enough to remember the first time they were cool!
The world has moved on! :)1 -
For fuck sake. This is literally the 10th time today either Rider or Unity has had hiccups and just crashed. Every single time I had something which wasn't saved and had to be redone. 😡 I could be so much more productive without having to rewrite a lot of my code twice...1

I'm thinking of starting to learn ruby on rails (why? I dunno I guess I got too much free time). Does any of you fellow devs has any advice or good resource material to suggest?1

Best way to learn UI/UX & front-end languages?
As a cs student college seems not to care too much about these, and jobs that help me learn most of the time require a professional-level skill1 -
I'm not going to have my source code stolen this time if noone steals yours. now how much more diplomatic a solution could there be eh ? guess they made the mistake of stealing heh.6

Start learning to code with a project that is close to your hard, will make time fly and you'll learn to code much better in the same go.

Workspace improvement
Other perks1 -

I'm playing the cookie clicker game, it's really good but it's very difficult to win and takes a lot of time. Is there a way to upgrade properly? Good game but takes too much time to set the record?3

It's always hard to balance time between romantic affairs and programming projects when both are going on simultaneously. I've been talking to a girl at my college, and even though she doesn't take up much of my time, I still feel like it's harder to make time for my programming. I guess this is more of dating affecting my code, but I personally prioritize code over dating currently in life.
