Modern web development is fucked. Just absolutely, totally screwed up.
I want to create a simple to do list web app. Look for a tutorial: "OK guys, this is really easy, it just takes five minutes."
First step, install these:
- Git
- NPM
- NodeJS
- Express
- MongoDB
- Docker
- React
Second step, npm install about one million modules. Don't question what they do or why they're there.
Before you know it, six hours have passed and you've got a code base of 3GB and you haven't even _started_ on your app.
FUCK that shit! I can create this web app with Internet Explorer and Notepad.49 -
Big client, sells products in 30+ countries.
Tries to generate newsletter subscribers, so asks for a system to send a coupon upon subscription.
2 days later, client calls in panic. “We have too many subscribers, our marketeers say it’s a bot issue, can you do something?”.
Checked the data, checked analytics, turns out there’s a lot of referral traffic from freebie-sites, no sign from a bot issue.
Called the client back, “sorry, but there’s nothing you can do about that, you wanted your newsletter to become popular. Not you’re the victim of your own success”.
Client: “can we add captcha?”
Me: “why would you want to do that? You don’t even have a bot issue”
Client: “to make it harder for people to subscribe”
I tried to talk som sense in their heads, but after 3 times I gave up and implemented the damn captcha. It’s still there, doing nothing but annoying thousands of people, including me...7 -

Not a rant, but a story.
Last 3 months I mentored our new development trainee. Last night, he presented his thesis in front of other students, profs, and a jury. He received the highest score of all the projects we evaluated, and was even nominated for an award.
I feel like a proud dad. 😅3 -
I made a web app team mad because I'm forcing them to implement HTTPS on their huge website made of sticks and stones.

Them: “We want parallax on our website on mobile!”
Me: “Parallax does not work in a mobile web browser.”
Them: “But it does here!” Shows me an iOS app that does parallax.
Me: “That’s in an iOS app. Not a mobile web browser”.
Them: “ Oh well. I’m sure you’ll figure it out!”
😐😐😐😐😐.

I am going to present my web app i've been working on for around 6 months today. Its a country level competition. Wish me luck guys, this could change a lot for me.18

Was almost done creating a full program as a web based app and the boss came to me and said:
"You know what, lets just add some more details to it, so the client is happy and create all of this as a desktop app from scratch"5 -
We've built a web app and now a client wants a VPN acces to the database of web app. When asked why, they said they want to occasionally pull some data out. 😱
We said no, and this is what they wrote:
"We’ve got live VPN access to every other web database we work with – why is this different?"
Well because maybe we know that we can build you an export of whatever you want, prepare you API calls for getting data to your CRM, but hell I'm not giving you access to the production DB.5 -
Holy cow 😯
DevRant web app got updated.
😥 Must resist to spend time on social media. Must resist 😑5 -
You know shared folder in Windows? My boss tell us web developers to work on an app inside that single shared folder (from one "powerful" pc, lol) to prevent conflict and keep the app up-to-date instead of git.2

@dfox You may want to explicitly set the text color on the devRant web app. It's kinda hard to read for those of us who have joined the dark side on Linux (Dark GTK+ theme), at least on Firefox. :)7

I've created a small smart home web app 2 or 3 years ago.
Features:
- Change DECT heating controller settings
- Philips Hue control
- Wunderlist integration
- Send a cooking recipe to the web app (from a large recipe site, with a greasymonkey script)
I've mounted an old Android tablet to a kitchen cupboard where the web app runs in kiosk mode in fullscreen (you can swipe between the different panels).
The web app is build with .NET Core Web-API, Vue.js and MariaDB. Everything runs on a Raspberry Pi.
Last year I've discovered openHAB with HABPanel...1 -

Supervisor has me making a web app in this badass new stack called the LAP (linux, apache, php) stack because he would he would like the app to be "simple". He's spot on though.. having a three letter acronym saves so much time.... and then we don't need to worry about a database... or querying.... or efficiency.... or even the web app itself because clearly he expects the fucking code gods to come down and turn this piece of shit web app into a fucking masterpiece if he thinks this shit can be done based on a hacked together file management system. Please save me code gods4

I just got started in my web development course in college now but I'm really not interested in waiting another year or two to finish my prerequisites when I could be learning and making my own stuff by now. I'm learning HTML and doing pretty well. But any tips for a guy trying to get into the industry? I know CSS and JavaScript are some of the basic tools I should know and also WordPress. Any advice is appreciated? Any good online courses I could also take to speed things up a bit?9

I studied BS Computer Science and one of our requirements is our thesis. All of the groups in our section proposed Web Based apps and got rejected because web based apps are too common. So we have no choice so all of us proposed mobile apps. Mobile Development is not in our curriculum so we have to teach ourselves during the development of our thesis.
All of the groups' dev collaborated and taught each other except one group, my group. Since I am a lazy motherfucker, I didn't taught myself how to develop a mobile app (android). So I made a web based app with responsive design, purchased my own domain, used android studio's webview and voila, a mobile app with a web based admin.
P.S. We got the best thesis award.3 -

The "JavaScript-based web app" starter pack.
Build web sites, not web "apps".
JavaScript is an enhancement, not a replacement for HTML.21 -
Hey everyone!
TL;DR I'm looking for a way to make a webapp for iOS.
I am developing an app for iOS devices. I am more familiar with JS, CSS and HTML, not to mention I have already created a fair chunk of the app. So it would be great if there was a solution that worked like UIWebView/WKWebView. I've had numerous issues with both of these widgets. UIWebView worked the best, most like a normal browser renderer, however still has some very annoying anomalies. For instance the input box could be covered up such so that you could still type but not see what you were typing, no other web browser does this. I've had plenty of issues that I have had to find hacky workarounds for. Is there a better way? I've heard of Titanium by Appcelerator, however I wanted to get as many opinions as a can.
Thanks!14 -
Hmm, this gameboy emulator is pretty cool. I have been playing Pokemon Sapphire for about two hour-

I used windows perfmon to see the memory usage over night.

Now i have to find out why the app doubles in memory twice in a hour.2 -
One poor pepega like me will spend days optimizing a web app, reducing the bundle size, reusing components as much as possible to save space, carefully choosing the right libraries for the right jobs and doing some careful tayloring to bring them in line with your needs, choosing the right webpack plugins to compile everything exactly like you want and keeping track of every dependency to make sure nothing unwanted makes its way to the final product, caching results to avoid any unnecessary call to the server, then some random team leader randomly forces you to drop in jquery-era plugins just because they look nice and won't listen to a word you're saying.
I KNOW WHAT THE FUCK IS A SWEET ALERT; I DIDN'T USE IT FOR A FUCKING REASON.2 -

Don't you just love thise dev days that just flay by, looked at the clock now and its just after 5pm,been coding pretty much all day.
Was reading up on progressive Web apps last night and just as a quick test made my own website one, so this morning through I would take the next step.
Few months ago I had made an events list app for android, also just for fun, but I point blank refuse to take it to ios as I see no reason to spend nearly 6 weeks salary on a Mac book because they a bunch of dicks, not to mention the $100 you need to pay each year just for them to annoy you.
Anyway, so after a quick update to my api, no thanks to Gitlab. I put together a fully offline capable pwa in react. So awesome how simply it really was, it's basically done, just needs some polish.6 -

developers: *weary sigh* -

So I just came back from an interview and the job turned out to be another desktop app to web migration...
I do do web development but still prefer C#, other compiled languages with strict syntax checking, and don't run in a web browser.

Should I just go all in on web dev and I guess I can use Cordova or React Native if I want a desktop app?5 -
Whether it's a good idea to host my very primitive web-app on Heroku or setting up my own VPS on DigitalOcean etc.?
Heroku will save me some time, but I'm not sure about the scalability and cost.
VPS approach means I'll have to take care of all the DevOps myself, even though I know a bit Linux to kick things off, this is still quite daunting to me.
Any suggestions? Insights? Rants?12 -

Alright I have a question for android/ios app dev, as being a web dev I see one has to do so much for tech stack as there are tons of web languages. And to keep themselves upto date according to the latest tech stack they have to learn new every day.
What about app devs you don't have so many languages like web do so can I say a person spending more time in one lang can learn it way better than web devs who have to look for the latest tech stack and start from the scratch?7 -

Am really confused between app development and web development. Where should I proceed guys?
Am CS student right now. Mostly learn C# (WPF, xamarin) in mean time.
But recently am getting love on Angular 4. For that I learn typescript (I know HTML and CSS basics btw) and willing to start learning it in upcoming vacations.
But thoughts coming in my mind is am doing good to get into web development? If yes what should I do with the knowledge of C# then? 😣😣. Or should I stick with app development and get dipper knowledge in it?
Really confusing stuff man. Am really need some good assistance on this topic!1 -
Noob question
I’m trying to deploy my front end web app (my personal website) to GitHub pages.
In my app, I used react environment variables to store a api key I need in my app.
When I deploy my app with GitHub pages, will the app still be able to access the react env variables?
Let me know if that doesn’t make sense. Thanks!7 -
How is a "web app" any better than a "web site"?
All a "web app" does is adding a JavaScript program as a middle-man between the browser and the server.
Where as "web sites" instantly deliver content, "web apps" deliver JavaScript code that then loads the content and puts it on the page.
A "web site" serves the browser useful content on a silver plate (metaphorically speaking), where as "web apps" serve some JavaScript code and the browser has to do the heavy lifting.
It appears that the only benefit of "web apps" is the fancier name. "App" sounds fancy while "site" sounds mundane. But technically, a "web app" is worse than a "web site". It's both slower and vulnerable to scripting errors.
Why would anyone in their right mind choose to create a web "app" over a web "site" to load text and a bunch of pictures?
I get it, some things such as posting comments without reloading the page and loading new search results when scrolling down are not possible without JavaScript, but why use JavaScript for everything, even where it wouldn't be necessary?
JavaScript should never be required to show a bunch of boxes containing pictures and some text. JavaScript is intended to enhance web sites, not to load entire websites.
As web developer Jake Archibald said, "[100% of] your users are non-JS while they're downloading your JS" ( https://twitter.com/jaffathecake/... ).
See also: I miss the good times when the web was lightweight. ( https://devrant.com/rants/9987051/... )
"App" is not an excuse: https://jakearchibald.com/2013/...

"Download our app for some lovely additional ass licking features....."
Why tech industry love apps? also I hate these days not only mobile phones, but also computers are in progression of "applification."
Programs are only installed do some advanced things that were absurd and inappropriate to work on web browser. like video editing or programming, or file management.. etc. but in recent days, everything is fucking apps. why just not improve your web version of your service and make the shortcut from that? Weather app. youtube app. reddit app. 'tips' app by apple that is totally useless. news app. map app. so much wasteful. these kind of services are MUST be on the UPPER layer than the web browser laid on. also apps are taking much resources on local hardware and that makes my hardware too much slow.
That is not how tech works. that is not how software engineering, hardware engineering works, every single thing in technology must NOT work like that. If it does, then that is not technology, and just stack of cow shit.3 -
So here is the question.
Am a CS student and interested in app development languages like C++ and C#. And leaning a lot about those languages and practicing.
Today in our class some member from **** company came and they told us that are going to arrange a 2 days workshop for php, JS, Ajax, HTML and CSS languages. After that they are going to offer a internship also. 😃
So should I go or not?
Intrested in app development but still wanted to have knowledge about web. Really confused on what to do! 😕😕😕8 -
Hey devRant team, I saw the new designs and they are awesome. Actually I just started learning Android App Development and I was curious what stack do you guys use for devRant Android App. And while we are on this can you guys share the stack you use for IOS app and Web app. Thank you and by the way you've done a really good job with android app.6

Any native app devs know if this is possible, before I go away and start messing about with shit.
I want to build a companion native app to my web app for the sole purpose of receiving in app push notifications.
So you set all the shit up on the web app and then the native app is just to get push messages. I currently send sms messages with the Twilio API but would rather the app solution.1 -
In terms of developing:
Best: made a responsive web app that connects to a desktop software and allows to make orders for providers.
Worst: the company for wich it was developed shows no signs of implementing that app now.3 -
Funny ... When they add a feature for web and expect it to also be in the app with the snap of a finger, and the app uses different apis compared to the web ...
Ah and also translations, the translation fairy will add them overnight I guess...
Good thing weekend just started ... Run you FOOLS!!!2 -

Like Enki or Sololearn.1 -

Imagine you're a dev for mobile apps (xamarin based) and you have a great project opportunity for a client.
The problem is that the project would (besides an app) involve a web version and you don't have any experience in web development.
How would you hire a web developer for this? Via freelancer platforms like twago, via an agency or request a project from some web design company?
Related question: does anyone know a good web frontend developer :)?5 -
Is it too much to ask for a tech lead who knows how to code a web app and knows SQL? We're a SaaS startup btw1

!rant: quick question re web app
Should I separate the admin side from user side?
(2 folders) or include both sides in one project(1 folder)?6 -
I thought react/Vue/angular was used to build single page web app.
But why the hell are we losing components state when we navigate between routes?7 -
For an web app suggest sub-domains instead of directory structures. Got escalations, not fired, then I quit my job.

Life of a web developer: Find a bug at the end of the app, fix a bug at the end of the app, time to test the bug? Sorry service is down for the rest of the day on the page right before the bug.
-
@dfox Now, I'm not a web dev (or really a dev of any kind quite yet) but I noticed that your web app doesn't show emoticons properly, making it confusing at times. Is this something you can set up support for on your side, or something I can or should do on my end? (This is on Chrome btw.)4

My web app is working on local and not online

How is it possible?
AJAX Call not working.
Not sending data😟13 -
Is it possible to continue file upload for android default browser without the browser being open?
I’ve been tasked by a company to make it so video and photo files can continue being uploaded from an app even when that app is closed. Slight issue is that the app is just a web viewer that goes to a web app.
I know this is convoluted but would the only way to do that be to overlay an actual upload button over the web view so that I can use androids built in service to do that and make a whole new way for the file to be uploaded to the server?
Surely there must be an easier way.14 -
Best: Built an awesome web app and received much.
Worst: For some reason Christmas brings out the worst in boss. Possibly Krampus in disguise. Will investigate further. -
When you corner help desk people so much they end up saying their web app doesn't support Asus PCs2

Hate it when the devRantron Mac client app doesn't support copy and paste. What devRant client do you use? Web, devRantron or mobile apps? Thanks!

What is the point of demanding an app if the app consists mainly of web pages?!?
And thanks for making it almost impossible for me to handle what the back button does when the user is balls deep inside of a website inside of the app.7 -
What kind of stupid hackathon gives solutions in problem statements fucking app dev, web dev solutions one can build in a night....boring
-
just has a discussion with a web developer didn't go well
we have to make a site. server side and client side has to be implemented it has realtime data also
Now his solution was aws + Python script for sever and a client web app that will show the data
i suggested firbase for server and client web app , cause it will be cheaper for us
he said that its more work for him to do firebase and application cost will be high
i am my self a developer ( worked on Android , web , but mostly microcontroller and hardware)
i don't understand cause from what
i see firebase is straightforward
am i wrong ?2 -
Can someone recommend a good, free and easy to use service (web or windows app) for mobile apps prototype, mockups, etc. I want to create a visually rich and possibly clickable prototype for a mobile app idea before development.7

I know how to build mobile apps (design and apps themselves).
I want to open a small services company, but I realized that I will need a website with portfolio of the jobs I did. Im working on gathering a portfolio, but have no idea how to make a proper website for representing my services.
Popular choice seeems to be getting a wordpress theme for $50-$60 modifying it and that's all. Is there a better way to do this and look professional without hiring a web dev?6 -
I really love this boilerplate for starting an Angular, gulp, browserify web app. https://github.com/jakemmarsh/...

Imma Jr. Web developer (Ruby on Rails) working here. I've got time at home, so what should i learn?
1. Go for mob app development?
2. Advance my development skills.
(I'll be moving soon to UAE, there are many senior level jobs but not Jr. and more mob app devs jobs than web devs)
Cheeers!1 -
Built a pretty cool native feeling web app with Socket.IO for event schedule management and networking. Pretty awesome to see what can be done with modern web tech!

Don't even know how to start. I currently work as technician (fix broken shit devices like apple and manage our servers).
Before the rant, here's a note: I'm a newbie-ish something.. Like I do some Java and Android stuff but nothing amazing (yet).
Here's my rant:
Boss: Hey, you mentioned in your CV that you do some programming.
Me: Yep, but just starting. Already made few apps but nothing crazy big.
Boss: Well, doesn't really matter. But, can you make an app and a website for us? We'll decide on the budget later.
Me: *kinda suspicious* Ehm, yep? I'll just make a wireframe and show you what I came up with.
*few weeks later*
Boss: So how's the app doing?
Me: I told ya that I'm making only wireframe. If you want the app you can:
a) pay for it
b) don't do anything and I'll make it open-source
Boss: No don't do that. We want the source on our FTP server.
Me: Riiight... That's a big no-no for me. It's gonna be on VCS, otherwise you can forget about the app and web.
Boss: *staring silently at me*
Me: ...
To this day, not a single response from him. We had one meeting where I presented the Website and app design, everyone was ok with it but no answer when I asked about the budget. Should I just scrap these projects and continue making them on github ('cuz I kinda like to learn new shit this way)5 -
I'd like to finish the web app I'm doing so my wife can finally use it. And I'd also like to start a new one while learning something new. Maybe an Android app or another web app using Angular 4? 🤔2

So for my work i need to build an app (preferably react native) which runs completely inside a webview. Is there any sane way to get the Webview to display a simple Web App made with standard Js? Im losing my mind over it5

@dfox The feed button on web frontpage is sort of invisible up in the corner. Expected place for "read without the app" is below the app symbols (in my mind). Also "Get the app to +1, post and comment" seems like an outdated remark(?)
Is there a better place for suggestions and general nitpicking btw? :) -
Hi guys. I wanna start a new personal project for web development. Actually i code in Rails for work and i want to try something different, Easy to learn but able ti manage any type of website and web-app. Any suggestion?5

Progressive Web apps :
In chrome you can use <6% of the free memory to store things.
Now imagine this situation :
Let's assume you have x amount of free memory in the system.
For first application : 0.06x
For second app : 0.06(x-0.06x)
And it goes on.
So for the thousandth developer,
It's a total fuckall.
How is this helping developers! -
I think web dev has reached its saturation point... App dev still has got some scope since everyone in the world carries more smartphones than laptops.1

When I tried to start a company and failed miserably. MVP was shit. Much harder to build a decent web app than I anticipated.3

The fact the most schools don’t teach you about web development or app development means they want you to work in big company instead of making your own apps4

Anybody here work with Firebase before?
I have a web app (react) that writes to a Firestore DB and a mobile app (react-native) that reads from the DB. As of right now, in my Firebase console I have the project set up as a web app project. Is this ok even though I’m reading the DB through a mobile app? Let me know if I’m not clear at all. Thanks!5 -

I guess I'm looking for a book on standard layouts used.

I'm trying out some stuff I read. I have rich domain models with private fields. In order to create EF core entities my domain models create snapshots with public properties.
So 3 models - domain, snapshot, entity.
Now I am thinking about introducing a fourth for the API.
This seems mental and that I have misunderstood something. Automapper might help clean this up. -

When you have to change your desktop app because of a bug in iOS app and its fix on web service! -
I need some clarity with the situation below.
I have my API ready.
Let's say I have a route /reset/token,
I want to be able to serve a html file with css and all that once I've processed the token internally.
I've not worked with the whole stack before so I've never really served files based on conditions i.e if the token is valid serve x else serve y.html
Also, I'm pretty sure node.js isn't the best for serving files.
So I'm taking another approach with nginx which is to implement /reset/token to serve the static file with it's coupled js file to query the API. Seems standard to me but I have this feeling that a prefilled html would be more secure than one with exposed js.
Is this the right way? Should I worry about my API calls being exposed via the js fil ? Is obfuscation the only way to handle this ? Is this the way everyone does it cause somehow I don't see the key js files in most sites. How are they hidden if so? Or are they?
I'm confused and also nginx won't let me rewrite /reset/token to something else without changing the browser url field. How do I prevent that ?1 -
