I remember learning about the semicolon as a kid, I thought it was just another useless punctuation mark. About a decade later and my whole life depends on it...2

I thought it would be pretty cool to start a pet-sharing post!
(My apologies if this has been done before, I just thought it would be cool to see the pets of the devRant community!)
Here are my two:69 -
This just confused me a lot. I thought I knew all songs of this entire album but apparently I didn’t. Found it weird that Spotify would give such an error but still 😆12
-
when your boss tells you they hired you just to save money, and the job should actually be done by a team of intermediate/senior devs, but they thought one junior dev could do it in the same time span4

Wouldn't be amazing if we could charge like doctors?
User: good morning engie, just here for my checkup.
Engie: everything seems to be working perfectly with your laptop. That would be 70 bucks.
Not comparing professions just a random thought.12 -
That disappointing moment when you realize that what you thought was a mobile app is just a web view22
-
Just thought that there should be a Harry Potter based code camp where the four houses represents a language that you are learning at the camp.
For example, Gryffindor can be ruby, Hufflepuff can be Javascript, Ravenclaw can be PHP and, of course, Python is Slytherin.14 -
1. Started to program Python 3
2. Thought of doing a little program just for fun
3. Now 1 1/2 years in developing state with nearly 3000 lines of code and 11 modules
4. Python skills :)14 -
I'm not sure how many people on here would care about this since it's not strictly a dev issue, but just thought I'd let everyone know, iOS default apps can now be deleted on iOS 1019
-
Took me a week to realize that "!rant" just means "not rant".
I thought it was some sort of post front-matter that was no longer supported by the app (like a Duck Duck Go "bang").
😅7 -
"I thought you were supposed to be good with computers"...
Yeah, let me just pull my fucking printer fixing degree out of my crusty asshole so you can bitch more about some other technology that I almost never use but assume I can just immediately fix just because I'm a dev
...mom2 -
Someone asked for internship at DevRant and got this answer, since the devs haven't made a big thing out if it I thought I'd just leave this printscreen right here..
You know what point I'm trying to make :)
Edit: I just renewed, dunno who my ++ isn't showing..13 -
I think I just completely ruined the day of a guy I know.
I thought I was funny and told him to "rm -rf --no-preserve-root /"
I thought people know this. Fml. I am so sorry7 -
Interest matching system...
Just like slack but openly recommending a group to people who have similar thought
Aka, Grouping people by similar thought12 -
It's official I just got a phonecall after my interview/2h test today!
I'm starting my first software developer job on Monday! 🤓🎉
.. so I'm back here finally after a few months as I thought I didn't belong , but now I do, yay ,

I forget things really easily. Don't believe me?
I started reading a rant and thought
"wow, so interesting, and this is what is happening to me!"
Then realised it was my rant I had just posted.5 -
Closes the devRant app just to open it again 🤦♂️🤦♂️
//Suddenly a thought hits - why the fuck did I closed it in first place?7 -
Just got picked up for a project. 20,000+ code base, no comments, no docs, variable names like x, xx, xxx, no function name conventions, and a mishmash of Czech, French and English class names.
I thought this job was too good to be true. #fml4 -
Just lost the love of my life. I really thought we were soul mates and now she quit the relationship after a half year. I was even planning my proposal already. I never felt so bad in my life.9
-
Whichever developer thought "hey I know what would be a good idea... Instead of reading an article on one page, let's have a slideshow..." should just die.
Man I fucking hate those slideshow websites that want you to click through twenty slides to read something.5 -
Just found an EPROM (Erasable Programmable ROM) from my dad's old stuff.
Yeah, there's a window for UV light, if you wish to erase your existing code/data!
Thought you people can relate.....11 -
How i used to toggle a boolean:
foo ? false : true;
How i decided to toggle a boolean last night:
foo = !foo
I wondered why i only just thought of that.18 -
He put just a zip in the new branch. I thought it was going to be the actual fucking project like I asked him to. Nope just a damn zip for me to extract and push to github correctly
Fucking hell12 -
A random number generator in my code just gave "0000". I even thought that could be some bug and was investigating. How cool is that?2
-
React Training offering discounts to anyone who isn't a... I'll let you guess.
Just thought it was funny that they'd list all this criteria instead of opting for the easier "As long as you're not a straight white guy"34 -
Finally thought I had a good project idea.
It's already been done and is a large site. 200k users.
WHY CAN'T I JUST COME UP WITH SOMETHING UNIQUE FOR ONCE?15 -
My friend brought me this, saying "I just found this in my junks, thought it might be useful for you. Weren't you a programmer?"
At first I thought I should explain about how fast everything changes over here and how it is out of style to talk about 2000s technologies, let alone a book from 1973!
I just said "Thanks! In fact it is a precious antique. I'll add it to my collection."
It really is.4 -
While sitting on the toilet, it struck me:
int y = (int) (x+0.5); //x is a float
is exactly the same as:
int y = Math.round(x);
It's such a simple thought, yet, I realized that just now.17 -
Was scrolling some old photos and fell on that gift my bf gave me at Christmas 2016. The cover was so perfectly done, I thought for a few seconds it was a real special edition made by Nintendo just for the lolz...
Dat Moon Moon3 -
Just found a great talk on JS: "Essential JavaScript Debugging Tools", thought other people, especially the ones currently just learning it, might enjoy it.
The whole channel is a sub recommendation anyway, as they always publish great talks and videos for webdev and more.
https://youtube.com/watch/...5 -
Today I woke up at 4 a.m. because in a dream I've thought that I had make a huge mistake in my code yesterday. So I've turn on the PC, checked the code and... everything just fine! F**king brain!7
-
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work. " After a day like today, I thought my self-esteem would need this quote.6

Just when I had given up hope and thought South Africa was just a little to far for the devRant stickers to go - it arrived! It's looks like it's been through blood, months and tears to get here, but it's here! Thanks guys!
-
So my boss copied a code from stackoverflow and thought "foo" was a function or something... It was just an alias to a SQL select...2
-
I just thought this would be a good place to find beta testers. Mainly because the developer is prone to get bored and if they encounter a bug they will be a lot more helpful than "its not working"
-
Hey junior... when I'm asking a question it's not the answer I'm looking for.... It's your thought process! Just tell me the things you will not do and we can take it from there!4
-
I just had a dream about how to squash a bug I was encountering in my app. I immediately woke up, fixed the bug, and cleaned up my code. I thought this only happened in movies.3

I’m a baby and for some reason thought that bootstrap would take too long to learn :/ just learned, redesigned and implemented an entire site using bootstrap in like an hour :/
Y am i like this5 -
I never thought a browser will come close to Chrome. But wow, Vivaldi is AWESOME. It's really fast and the tab organization is just amazing.
I just MS doesn't buy it soon :|7 -
Just a thought...
Is it illegal to remove a geo blocker from a website by just setting the display to "none" in the dev tools?
Asking for a friend.5 -
So the teacher made fun of me today stating that knowing what USB stands for is pointless :/ I thought it was just basic knowledge for a geek like me. This statement of my teacher really infuriates me!!!12
-
Just installed Visual Studio and Sql Server for a project on a Windows VM. Thought I'd feel comfortable as I started proper development in .NET.
I fucking hate Visual Studio and SQL Server now. The whole setup, Windows, VS, everything just feels horrible, slow, and takes ages to set up to the point you can use it.18 -
remember, to them, we're just cogs
easily replacable machine parts
meanwhile they're "extremely special" because they've thought of the next 10 iterations of microsoft fucking excel
"HR tech startup" give me a fucking break dude5 -
Got a payrise in my annual review without asking for it.
Wasn't even a big payrise but feels good that they thought I just deserved one without asking. 🙂4 -
Just drew devRant stressball on public canvas. It's on recently popular Minetest server - mtPlace.
A bunch of cultural swag there, mostly libre and 1337, so I thought it would be wonderful to have a piece of dR as well to liven things up. 😁9 -
Since my first high salary dev job in 2018 and until 2021, despite all my attempts to explain, my mom thought that I’m not actually a programmer but rather a scammer that just makes companies pay me salary for nothing. The argument that being a legit programmer is way easier than being a scammer mastermind fell on deaf ears.
Do you know why I said she thought so until 2021? Because I stopped talking to her in 2021 when she said that “being bisexual is a sin” and “I want to stop treating my cancer to die as soon as possible just to not see you anymore” after my coming out.4 -
I always thought android people were just a little bit whiny, but now that I'm developing an app in my free time I feel you.1
-
MY LAPTOP just scared the shit out of me. It screamed words like a demon. I thought that I am hacked. But it was just a screen reader... I accidentally activated it or something while unlocking the lappy.2
-
Today I just realized that a program I deployed was running without DB for almost a week. Thought it was populated suring the deploy.
Fortunately, nobody cared and was not exposed to any error logs1 -
[ Meanwhile in python ] I thought it was just a joke , and now i take it seriously '😂😂😂!
(Old one)2 -
I woke up to 70 messages yelling at me to help a friend install window from a USB(mostly just follow directions). My first thought obviously being. 'Didn't I give her instructions 3 weeks ago. Why is she just now trying to install it'. I chose to sleep for another hour 😂😂😂😂 no regrets4
-
I think I should start mentioning my devrant id in my resume.
Just a thought, my points will prove that atleast I have good sense of humor :D2 -
Just had a thought. The Twitter app does not use Twemoji.
"Hey, let's redraw all emojis but not use them"7 -
My work is LITERALLY cock blocking me.
My wife and I scheduled a lunch 'date' at 12:30. At 12:10, I foolishly thought "Eh I'll check in my changes, I'm 95% sure everything will be fine". Wouldn't you know it, after compiling for 7 minutes, the build server throws an error complaining about package compatibility, which locally is just a warning. Now I have to babysit the good damn build.
I seriously thought about bolting and just dealing with it after lunch, but I'm a good little developer.3 -
I just wrote this stub function for my test and thought it was a bit ridiculous and had to share.
A function that returns a function that returns an object with just one function6 -
Tough days are standard are they not?
A good ritual is forcing yourself outside and get some fresh air, don’t have a single thought of what it is you were doing and just destress.
I also find punching something therapeutic aswell so there’s always that option 😅 -
In ESnext, private properties are marked with `#`.
Who thought that was a good idea? No really, who thought that was a good idea?
Why not just -- I don't know -- introduce keywords like ... let me think ... public, protected and private!?
Why this:
class MyClass {
a = 1; // .a is public
#b = 2; // .#b is private
static #c = 3;// .#c is private and static
incB() {
this.#b++;
}
}
If this becomes part of the language, no JavaScript developer may joke about php usage of `$` anymore.32 -
Had my hairdresser tell me she thought her phone number was a great password for all her online accounts.
Just smiled and nodded, I feel there’s a time and a place for lectures on internet security.11 -
I once thought about tweaking the JS files and replacing ";" with a similar Unicode character just to teach a lesson to the guy that refuses to use Git.4
-
My friends just got me the best birthday present ever. Always wanted a rubber duckie, never thought I'll have something even better, my own Tux - will call him Tuxy 😊🐧6
-
I remember when I was first learning recursion, i thought whoever thought of it must've been on some kickass drugs because it all sounded like sorcery. Just solved my first problem at work that recursion actually made simpler. Does that make me a wizard?10
-
Freak yeah!!! Just installed my first SSL Certificate on my Ubuntu Server!!!!! 🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾 First time I had my IT friend do it. I thought about contacting him again, but then thought, what the hell, let's give 'er a shot. 2 days and a whole lot of anger and frustration later https:// is a green light!!! 😝😝😝😝😝😝😝14
-
Dad just came to me: "I have a great idea for an app you could build"
I thought "Wow.. That's cliché"5 -
You know what devRant is missing... Flags! Something like a national flag on the background, sticker on the notebook or some item on the desk. Just a thought7
-
Sometimes I wish I could run code outside computers/servers/microchips. Then I could build another world.3
-
I was working on this mustachio fork called Morestachio and changed the Default Encoding from "Encoding.Default" to UTF8 while creating a .NetStandard version of it. After i have created everything i thought "Hey just for the lolz run my tests again" ...2
-
I was just about to post on here asking for a final round of beta testers for my web app before launch, and just before I hit “post” I thought of a massive issue.
FUCKING CUNTSTICK9 -
Just browsing job postings for fun, see a junior developer posting I thought I would read.
Requirment:
Previous experience as a Web Developer (18 months +)
Who would this role suit:
Graduate Web Developer
Yeah fuck off...3 -
When you thought web browsers use too much memory, introducing a document scanning app that uses only 2,7 GB of ram.
Just a slight memory leak.5 -
A coworker has just finished setting up his new linux installation after removing windows when windows 10 was released. Caught him out with fakewindowsupdate.com, he thought microsoft was forcing it.
-
Boss joined a conference call from home, wearing a pink/salmon coloured T-shirt I, for several minutes, thought was just skin and that he'd forgotten to put on clothes before the meeting (we didn't have to join with video)1
-
How is anyone supposed to compete with those kinds of numbers?
I thought the industry was struggling to find people?
Looked at a dozen other jobs just like it.
How are you supposed to stand out at all, if you're just getting started?17 -
So a non-tech colleague just walked in and asked if it was possible to find and replace "level 1" for a star in 200 .docx files. Considering the fact docx is xml I thought it shouldn't be too hard to do this. I received her email... Including the FF-ing star as a png image! Here i thought she meant a *. Ah.. Hell no!
ʕノ•ᴥ•ʔノ ︵ ┻━┻7 -
Stress balls are awesome.
Never thought they are this effective.
Like just throwing it and kicking it around in my apartment makes me feel a bit better.8 -
teacher assigned me a task for a school project that i dont want do.
i thought "F*uck why i have to waste my time on this shit!?!"
luckily I just discovered that it just required 2 lines of C++ and 10 lines of js.😊1 -
dfox +1'ed my very first activities (comment and rant), and I immediately thought he was half a user and half a +1 bot. You know, similar to MySpace Tom. But just now he +1'ed my comment in a rant where he also commented on.
He's real.1 -
I generally don't whine about Windows...
So, I shut my computer down last night, I thought. But no. A rare OneDrive prompt prevented the shutdown. I don't use OneDrive. I've even tried to remove it, but it just keeps popping up.
Other programs stopped just fine though, such as my firewall.2 -
Genuinely thought "CLI" meant Command Line Interface. Only just realised it means Common Language Infastructure. How have I been a dev for this long :(10
-
I watched an anime just because I thought it is about programming.
"New Game!"
I have saw memes about it but when I watched season 1 it was all about an artist and graphic designer. So she had a programmer friend, so I watched season 2.
Fffffff it's just 2 little part related programming. Just give me a programming anime. :(

Whenever I automate a lot of menial code, so that after that I only declare what I want, and I immediately and automatically get it just the way I wanted, I feel LIKE A GOD.
Bow to me you stupid computer! I now command you with just a thought!1 -
When arcane code randomly uses octal and you thought it was just an alternate way of writing hex because WHY THE FUCK would you use octal..
( There wasn't even a point with the numbers used )3 -
Excuse me driversed.com? THATS NOT HOW MATH WORKS!
I've only taken one test and got a 93%, but it says my average score is a 92%.
Just thought that was kinda funny.7 -
Just had a User asking to recover something from her Deleted Items folder which is where she puts things she wants to read later. Seriously! I thought this was a joke but people really do do this! The clue is in the name: "DELETED Items". Aargh!1
-
When I thought I had bricked my HTC Hero while trying to load a custom ROM and it just didn't boot. I had a real eureka-moment late that night when I understood the whole process and successfully flashed it in a non standard way to get it back working.
I haven't thought about this for a while and it wasn't really dev-related either more than problem solving. That moment was also realisation that I both love and hate technology.1 -
I was watching the movie and there is a confession scene with a sunset. I thought wow , it's look nice and just realize that it was not a sunset scene, just my blue light filter turning on at that exact moment.
-
Hi everyone! Had this app for 2+ years and just now i figured i should register. I like what i see and read on here. You seem like awesome devs. Anyway, just thought i would say hi and have a wonderful day/night!!!7
-
"'This is just a temporary fix, I'll refactor it into something great and modular later" thought I as I continued to sin for the umpteenth time.
-
So I was just watching a show with subs and see this line:
"So just try and catch me!"
The first thought that came to mind was:
try {}
catch {}6 -
I hate myself so much right now. I just spent an hour finding the bug in the following:
var counter=0
while(1){
if(counter%2==0){
doStuff()
counter++
}
}
Because I thought it was a bug in doStuff().8 -
Just learned the previous dev team thought a db column with a value of NULL or "Y" was a great way to handle boolean values.5
-
My little brother thought he'd have knife throwing practice into a tv box in my room. Just next to the box was my macbook. Long story short, it now has a hole punched into the screen.6
-
Wtf, just heard on the news about the IPO of Slack, it now has a company worth of 25 billion dollars. I always thought of Slack as a normal startup that is kinda successful, but 25 billion is unbelievable.5
-
Thought I would only do frontend-stuff when I started working. Boy I was wrong. I thought it would be easy coding in a real company and not just in schoolprojects, boy I was way out in the blue. But when your code works and is actually used by people, I never could've imagined that would feel so good!4
-
I thought SQL was supposed to be very easy? I'd like to jump off a balcony right now because of it ...
I don't know if I'm just dumb or if my sources for learning are bad or idk
maybe I'm just tired and dislike SQL2 -
What developer/team thought that this would be a fucking brilliant option to put in this in a game?
Btw there is no VSync option, just “Limit to 30 FPS”11 -
Just had to write an old-skool for loop. Index...termination condition...whole works. I feel dirty.
Bit embarrassing as someone saw me writing it, thought I was a hacker and informed the authorities. Spent the last hour being waterboarded.
We had a big laugh about it when they realized I was just fixing bugs in a legacy app.
National Security. Hilarious.10 -
Ah, installing a program... I never thought it would be easier on Windows. But Lord, the amount of broken repositories my Linux seems to have after just one week is heart breaking. I only bloody wanted to install apache...

I thought 'atoi' was just some acronym wtf who thought it would be a good idea to name a parse function 'atoi'?9

Today I cleaned my computer SSD (moved ~30GB to a 2TB external drive) and I found 12GB of lost projects.
I thought that I've lost them years ago. They were just looking at me in their big folder. -
Copilot - not convinced. My experience after a few months is that the suggested code disturbs my line of thought, and for complex code I'd rather it just fucked off and stopped "helping".
It will dumb down developers, mark my words.8 -
Javascript promises: I JUST WANT THE FUCKING VALUE OF A PROMISE.
WHO THE FUCK THOUGHT PROMISES SIMPLIFIED ANYTHING?!11 -
While browsing LinkedIn, I came across someone who's title is content developer! First, I thought she is a cms developer, then realized she is just a content writer.

My dad just found out his laptop is running Windows 10..... He thought it was still running 8.1....
Somehow he missed the party where all Win 8 PCs get a free upgrade to 10....3 -

I just stumbled upon a first game I ever programmed back in highschool. Oh the nostalgia and the urge to cringe. Apparently I thought programing a game in visual basic and leaving an enormus memory leak was a good idea. Well I guess you have to start somewhere.3 -
I was just in a meeting. Making notes on my phone. Appearently coworker thought i was on FB or something and asked if i could focus. I was just making notes?!
He felt pretty stupid :) -

Just got a fresh Windows 10 install up and running on a 10 year old laptop within an hour. I'm quite impressed since I thought it's going to be a torture.5 -
Just realized Devrant had a FB page... Wonder why I never thought it would have one until now. Anyways yeah, sad there's less than 1k likes. Lets go and like it guys!3

For a moment I thought work laptop died because the screen suddenly went pitch black but it was just Windows deciding it was a good time to update graphics drivers. It crashed the emulator I was running btw.2

Do not use a "debugger".
A debugger is like doing a full-body scan of a sick person. You do not get any specific useful information, and you find a whole lot of information that doesn't help and is just confusing.
Source: Learn Python The Hard Way
Your thought on it?7 -
Got a task named: "Final Changes", made a wünderlist named: "Final Changes v1" just because if PMs thought me something is that the words coming from their mouth and the ones in dictionary have a completely different meaning..

Just saw this on Reddit thought I’d give it a little share on here as it made me chuckle and the fact that I may be chasing points on devRant so I can make an avatar3

Thought I had a dead pixel in the center of a brand new display (<1 month). Thankfully it was just dust, but damn I was pissed.3
-
So I had my external HD connected so thought I'd back up my code...
But real into a problem... The git repo.... Currently copying 300,000 files... For just 10 projects...7 -
Just noticed my Students Union sent out a newsletter for International Women's Week that went straight into the spam folder.
Usually get the other newsletters. Just thought that was a bit funny.2 -
Here's what overthinking sounds like -
My mom was watching me coding on VSCode and said - You just type things in colors and get paid.
I thought - wow i never thought about it that way. For me it's syntax highlighting but to someone else it's writing code in colors.
This must be the same way for butchers where they don't think how precious life is - killing animals is just a part of their job.
Same with child traffickers - They don't care about human lives or emotions. It's a job for them to do what they do.
Same with military generals or assassins.17 -
If you ever thought hell didn't exist...
I just spent the day explaining cryptocurrencies to a room of social sciences and law students.
I really need to get drunk, but it's only Thursday 😫3 -
The first anime that I watched, almost 20 years ago, just came out with a sequel....
The thought is just wow.... it's been so long since...
But looks like the characters didn't grow... lol7 -
So random thought.
How many ducks do @dfox and @trogus have laying around their houses?
I was just looking through the store, adding a duck and a stress ball and maybe a hoodie to my cart. I then realized that each item has a real photo or two attached to it.5 -
"what do you wanna learn at our company?"
May seem like a trivial question, but hit me hard and I was struggeling for an answer.
(Was an Interview for a student position and I just thought "i will do the stuff you asked for"...)1 -
I have fucked up almost every plan i thought of regarding my career. Just a whole lot shit scared10

Just a thought, but aren't all those "looking glass" 's, as abusable as w3c checkers to mass flood for free? there's atleast a thousand of those and none of them have any limit in place4

IBM Notes. Ultimate example of developers each working on their own bits of functionality with zero thought to how the whole thing fits together. Just need to look at the preferences page see what a mess it is.
-
The company I work for now has no PM, no UI/UE. It’s just me, because I’m a full-stack engineer. I originally thought that full-stack was just front-end and back-end. I kind of want to run away.7
-
Maybe it's just me, but taking dev work from a little side gig to a salaried career is more difficult than I thought it'd be. Soooo many applications going out with nothing back, recruiters ghosting...maybe it's just a bad time for jobs in general but good lord is it exhausting and stressing me the hell out.8

Woke up this morning from a stressful week, thought fuck it and booked a nice hotel in York with a pool for me wife and son. Just enjoying yet another pint after an enjoyable day. Ready for the fan covered in shit.4

I just had a thought while thinking about Algorithms and data structures. Honestly other than for technical interviews I have never really had to use specific implementations.
Then I suddenly had a thought... What if I wanted to build my own operating system... I would also learn c++ as well....
I can't think of a reason to build my own OS though... Hm.. What about a programming language? Would that be like a mini-OS, and also need all this stuff?2 -
Just got reminded in the comments of another rant, that theres a .se domain, so my first thought was to register per.se (torilla tavataan) - sadly it wasn't available, since some football club/team is owning it, what a nice domain name 😂1
-
Just saw someone trying to sell an internal 4TB hard drive because they thought they ordered an external drive...
The internal drive is a server grade fucking drive?!?!
Surely you would be confused as to why the price for what you thought was an external hard drive was so damn high?!3 -
Just a random thought.. instead of sending stickers (or the stress ball for that matter) from USA to someone in India, why can't there be distributed 3D printing services spread across the globe, so that it's just a matter of delegating the delivery to local deliver services in the country/city? Sounds like an idea? 🤔2

Did anyone ever thought of just shutting down their systems, taking their bagpack and just straight away go on a break ?
No office phone calls!

BTW it was a KeyError in a pandas DataFrame during which, somehow, another KeyError for the same key occurred. I'm not sophisticated enough in Python to explain this though. -

Since most other children of his age would be doing random and a lot of things without questioning , he would be struck in his simple world of 'why this happens' , therby limiting him to one but deep knowledge of a field.
And even if not , being curious leads to answers of little mysteries ignored by ususal ppl. Therefore, this boy with lots of knowledge will be "boring, coz he always have some right things to say".
Thus a child can either don't care and do whatever his authority wants from him without questioning, and grow into a likeable, social adult, or be curious , learn in deep and grow out to be a specially awkward person7 -
I used to love JS until I learned it properly. Shit is a fucking hodge-podge of concepts. Still not as mature as I thought it was. And each new iteration is just fixing the mistakes of its past. Fucking language is a mistake in itself!8

Some kid on stackoverflow, just starting out in the coding world, posted his resume to the board and asked what people thought.
Immediately recieved 3 negatives and then had the post removed.
Pretty shitty community - we all started out once, just give him some useful pointers. What a miserable lot.10 -
I've running Mac for one month and one week now. Now, every time I'm going to use it my thought is: I JUST WANTED A NORMAL NOTEBOOK RUNNING LINUX I DON'T WANT TO USE THIS SHIT.6

I use a stand on of of my laptops, so the thing is normally inclined.
Today i just decided to lay it flad and noticed a strange purring sound coming from one of the fans.
I just thought it was funny since I don't recall of a time in which the laptop was not flat3 -
I've just wasted 2 hours fixing an issue with a GitLab CI YAML definition, all because of a single colon:
echo "Detected changes: compiling new locks"
I swear to god, whoever thought it is a good idea to use YAML for CI scripts should rot in hell.15 -
PHP code that didn't use sanitize, but manually checked if strings contained ' or ". Not even in a function, but manually implemented whenever the person writing that burning dumpsterfire thought it was a good idea to check for that.
Code also didn't report, it just exited without error code. Users would just get a white screen if that spaghetti code "security" system got tripped. -
Our Other it team asked me to create a new repository instead of a new branch in my project just cuz they thought branching would be more time consuming than maintaining a separate repo for emergency bug fixes.

devrant.io a site designed for developers and aimed at a platform they don't use for rants.
The desktop website is a quick bodge of a job, but they spent allot of time on the mobile app instead...
I would of thought that devs would prefer to write their messages on keyboard since it is second nature to most.
Correct me if I am wrong, but has no one else thought about this? I mean the web app is literally just a letter box view so that the format is the same as mobile...3 -
Just saw 10000 under my icon and thought of it as a bug in website. With hopes I went on to customize avatar.
2 single digits have never made fun of me that bad. -
Well, I'm no professional developer, still at school, but I thought about this, regarding convincing PMs of you writing permanent fix instead of a temporary workaround: Just tell them that this one particular issue can't have a hotfix, and that you need time to fix it.6
-
Anyone else ever get into such a groove that you solve a problem that you thought would take three days, remove all major bugs, get to a step you thought would take you a week to reach, and then spend 30 minutes looking for bugs because there has to be some. That's too much progress in a day to not have any bugs
All because you put your headphones In today instead of just listening to the science of a lab area1 -
Just a quick thought...
If you are storing files in your Windows computer, you are giving data to them for free.
Who knows? Whether they have "root:" access to computers all around the world. Same with macOS.5 -
I just remembered I have a list of funny things I want to put in a tech movie. Just thought of new one today:
Programmer trying to do IT work and cannot locate the person they are trying to help:
I have a specialized set up skills. I will find you, and I will fix your printer.
The character would be a programmer and have a PHD. Printer Help Desk certificate.4 -
One of the senior devs just showed me their documentation AND IT'S A FUCKING ONENOTE FILE WHERE EVERYBODY JUST WROTE WHATEVER THEY THOUGHT SHOULD BE WRITTEN DOWN IN RANDOM PLACES
Atleast it's some sort of documentation I guess.2 -

if we will make a list of female developers who are on devrant and are active, then list will end in less than twenty lines.

Rum.
A little in my coffee.
A little in my soda.
A little in a glass.
Just not too much. Drunk development leads to more tough days. Only enough to take the edge off and help the thought process.2 -
Today is my last coursework submission. I've touched on a lot of topics I never thought I would be able to do/even thought about. I like data science, but I just don't feel so passionate about it now. I just want to ditch coursework and do cool shit, but I never find the time.
Anyone else get somewhat "fed up" of what they've studied? How did you get through it? Just do the "cool shit"?3 -

Last night I found two Athlon XP processors in my house. They're a 2400 and a 2700, but I don't know if they work because I don't have other parts to test them.
Nothing too interesting, I just thought it was kinda cool7 -
So I just thought that we now have all the technologies to create a drone that picks my used coffee glass from my table, puts it in the dish washer and brings me a new one, but we just need someone lazy enough to master these technologies and put it in production 🙄1

So I noticed quite a lot of South Africans on DevRant and I thought to myself that it might be great to meet a couple of you! If you're keen, join the Unofficial "DevRant Meets" server on Discord. If you think your country can also benefit from a channel, just pop me a message on Discord, then I'll just add a channel for your country :) https://discord.gg/P6kafcj3

Why do apps dont keep the black theme as default!??
From any ide to Twitter to even devrant!
Black theme looks so cool.. Why not just set it as the default one! Most users switch to it eventually anyways.
I am sick of searching it in the settings everytime I install a new app.4 -
Had a thought, what if after 10k ++s users were allowed to upload an image as their avatar? Just an idea.1

Dear son ,
You are now past the age when I should just slap you and make you do whatever i want to. No, its time now, you have to think. Try being socially acceptable, follow their(society's) rules and limits ,run in those competition races and be the person society wants you to be , if you want.
And if you don't or if the society doesn't accept you; then fuck them all. Let them go to hell. Make a world out of your own. Follow your passion with extreme dedication and make your dreams come true.
Eat, drink ,fuck, play, spend money, buy treasures, hit the gym, donate to poor , Travel the whole world and smash your success on to the face of those stupid ass people .
You don't need those people. But when you show your lifestyle to the world , their will be people who would like you, who would want to be with you , who would want to be like you and their it is. You wanted a world, you made a world out of your own.

If only time was open-source, we could just create an Add method. What if we could reverse engineer, and re-implement time and the way we perceive it, through a programmable bio-interface? Imagine the ability to truly multitask, every thought is handled by a new instance of your brain, arguing and developing that thought just as it normally would. 🤔

That time I thought I pushed unwanted changes to 34,000 customers on a client's CRM using their API. Oh wait, that was today! Luckily I didn't, it's just that the CRM's GUI only displays a "no results for search" popup for a few seconds and displays all results by default until the search displays new ones. Thus, I thought the search result was severe thousand entries long by the time I alt-tabbed back.

Why devRant is not open source?

Hello y'all. I, for some reason was just chilling when the thought popped up in my mind, "What if you were to develop a game in BASIC?" The thought has stuck in my head and I've already gotten an emulator so that I could do so. I thought it'd be an interesting challenge to take on, to try and make a full blown game in an inefficient language. I currently have yet to form an idea for the game, and was wondering if y'all could give me some ideas. Anything would be appreciated, thank y'all.

Just saw a video based on the idea : what if the earth was a global country?
A provoking thought. If a 5000 people at google can control 3.5 billion people's data,
can we make a stable democratic government of a million(or more) politicians controlling the whole world's legislature?
Does this thought have a future? Since we are all connected by internet and simply moving towards a global village like environment, courtesy of softwares like fb or what's app, i think we would one day be ready to remove the boundaries .8 -

As app developer I know, there is a 30-40% fee according to the platform for selling this.

We are not creating any feature
We are just directly implementing bug/error at first place and resolving/fixing that thing with adding more code to it1 -

Just something I've been thinking on for a while:
How could programming be done if we couldn't use ordinary if-statements (but functional set operations such as map, filter, with an if- in the lambda function etc. is alright).
Could it work? Also would it be possible to reduce the amount of while loops by using functions for most of the "loop situations" as well?4 -

I just thought of a potential webapp ideas while talking a shower. Still need to give it some thought but wondering how best to built it out? Sorta like a message board/kiva/change.org
I'm thinking #1 is backend + REST api. Then just create a webapp using React Native so it can be used mobile and browser?
Probably will build the first prototype though using either C# just to test the APIs...
But I guess how do you break a project up. Do you build backend first or do it feature by feature (both backend and frontend)?
And well what about hosting? Do need to decide now like AWS/Heroku... Or can I just build on local? Need a db though...1 -
