Last hour of my job today:
Hardstyle blasting out of the speakers at full volume
Everyone drinking a beer
Boss coming in with "Fuck this shit we're gonna game!"
This is what I call a good end of the work week 😍33 -
So after a long day of CSS’ng for building a new form layout, I walk out of work and see this 😨
I swear the universe is cruel at times.9 -
At work, everytime someone finds a piece of code (their own or someone else's) that couldn't possibly have ever worked, we draw a line. Obviously preceded by finding out who wrote said code.5
-
Got to work this morning only to find out devRant is now on the list of blocked social media sites here. Let the job search begin.17
-
A method that contains over 9000 lines of code.....
Are there really production codebases out there with stuff like that? If yes I am scared as hell because I don't want to work with that kind of code once I graduate
Tell your stories!19 -
Currently building code for an app for a website using nothing more than my tablet, it sucks being out of country when you're trying to work😡😡😡14
-
Me: So you know how to program in Java right?
Poser: yea.
Me: can you show me some of your work?
Poser: console.log("Hello, World!")
Me: get out.2 -
Don't develop depression, develop a personality instead, be more outgoing and outspoken, work out, dress better and make your life shit that goes beyond coding.
Tired of people in tech being this way. Everyone acts as if monkeying away on the keyboard makes them some sort of autistic genius that is too good for everyone else.
Some of you have the social skillset of a fucking potato.
You code dude. Most of you develop websites...chill the fuck out.52 -
When you walk into work and see this, it makes you want to walk right back out.
(Each display is a separate Ubuntu box. Six of them were down. Six.)11 -
My output of 5 hours of work: changing a 'b' to a 'B'.
5 hours working out what the stupid cryptic error message means and reading documentation, 5 minutes to change and test the difference.3 -
Things I like about WFH
-save petrol and mileage
-work in underwear
-big TV during lunch
-time saved by no commute
-lie down during meetings
Things I dislike
-feel like my room has been invaded by work/miss the physical separation of work and home
-distractions and temptations
-they moved the stand up to ealier because of WFH
-Everything has to be a meeting. No just popping by someone's desk with a quick question
Sometimes I miss physically seeing my colleagues/getting out of the house but not often11 -
after hours of debugging your program without any luck...
wife(never programmed a day in her life): what's up?
me: I can't figure out why this program won't work
wife: oh! you're probably missing a semi-colon somewhere9 -
Work today was good although put in 2 hrs of overtime....
But I optimized some code by changing out a class. Now it does the same thing except does it:
in SECONDS on my local PC
instead of 10+ MINUTES on a massive server.12 -
Fucking hell, how much I hate frontend!
Getting a tab system to work (bulma only exists out of css) has been taking me ages and its still not working.
I love nice interfaces but I just want to work on the backend 😭18 -
Client ask for "quick fix". Done.
Client asks for the invoice. Freaks out. "WTF you are charging thousands of dollars for 15 minutes of work!"
Reply: "It took me 15 years to fix it for you in 15 mins!"
Picasso FTW!5 -
Pure spite really.
I do things better out of spite.
I picked my career out of spite, finished my degree out of spite, and currently work out of spite.20 -
Lost half a work day because of an ISP outage. (Testing mailers doesn't work without a connection)
Turns out it was a loose cable on our modem that happened to coincide with the ISP outage elsewhere.
Ugh.1 -
At 4pm, after 6 hours of work of migrating from mysql to mongodb...
I am drinking coffee with my team.
Boss, comes from somewhere and asks...
what do you all want? (What he meant was, go back to work you all)
One of my team member- (angry and agitated) says-- a comfortable sofa.
Holy fuck, i laughed my ass out.
Guess what happend next...22 -
And this scares the shit out of me.... Are we all doing harm in Developing code that seems to ease our work now, but might even kill us later...11
-
My study's logic every fucking time: (I'm a senior by the way)
Junior: Sir, could you help me out for a minute?
Teacher: I'm busy right now, please fill out the support request form and go ask one of the seniors (yeah, not even kidding)
Junior: Alright, hey dude, could you help me out maybe?
Me: yeah of course, just get your laptop and go sit here next to me!
Other Teacher: Hey you, leave the seniors alone, they've got their own work!2 -
Teacher: "Will this SQL statement work LavaTheif?"
Me: "you need to put a 'WHERE id.."
T: "but will it work like this?"
Me: "well it wont do what you're trying to do, so it wont work properly"
T: "so will it work?"
Me: "no."
T: "wrong. It will work, but it will change everything in the database, which we dont want"
Thats what I was saying??
Also, he spent 50 mins out of our hour lesson explaining how to use SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE. I just wanted to get on with the work tbh.7 -
Had a great day yesterday. Productive, happy, felt great, and was focused despite a lot of cute distractions. Finished a third of my feature.
Today, I wanted to start work early because I had planned out what I wanted to work on next and how to approach it. I felt motivated. I’d jump out of bed, get ready, and start early. No breakfast but maybe some coffee.
Woke up to two hours of constant distractions, irritations, and time wasting instead. Anger. Everything sought to prevent me from starting.
When I finally got to work, the first thing I saw: political warmongering bullshit.
Guess I’m not getting much done today.13 -
Man it's midnight and all I want to do is work. 5 hours from now I'll be dragging out of bed to go to work where nothing gets accomplished. In 17 hours when I drag in from work I can do real work for 7 hours before crashing while wishing I could just code through the night. It's an infinite loop and I dont know how to fix it!10
-
Many kudos to the guys behind devRant for incrementally adding features that actually work out of the box.3
-
Put in 22 hours of work (straight through) and an end user requested changes the next day.
Fuck you, I'm out. -
Is anyone getting any actual value out of them? As much as I dig agile some of the rituals plain just don’t work.
Fight me!13 -
After months of hard work, we finally released our product. Only for the PM to send this out as the announcement email..3
-
i am a procrastinating asshole. woke up at 7am to do some work, and still, 5 hours later - nothing! i am so pissed of at myself right now. i just want to jump out of my skin and not be me anymore. fuck.7
-
I got two lines of code done today, and they were just changing numeric defines. Time to do that: 2 seconds.
Time for analysing the measurement data of various runs in order to know which numbers will work out: the rest of the day.6 -
Devrant...
... give me the serenity to accept code that don't work
... The courage to fix code I can
... And the wisdom to find the typo before I throw my pc out of the window.
Amen.2 -
Yo Guys🤓...Check out this game that I made as a part of learning Javascript. A simple combination of a 2d platformer and Flappy Bird.
Made it in like a month...Proud of me...
Tell me if you like it I want to work more on it...😆

Regex.
I HATE YOU.
There. I've said it.
I spent the better part of the last hour trying to wrangle together, not one, but TWO regexes and getting them to work with Python's "re" module.
The worst part about these little shits? It's how well they work once you figure out how to get them to work. For example, pulling a phone number out of a paragraph is difficult with string methods, but cake with regex . . . if you can figure out the pattern.
But I think I'll always have hate in my heart for Regex just for how obtuse and frustrating they can be.
F**k you regex.19 -
soldering on a pcb is just as stressful as programming. u solder everything and u test it out and then it doesnt work like its designed to. its just like compiling it and a lot of errors are detected. the worst part of it, you cant detect the errors as soon as u try it out. you have to find where exactly in this kind of mess is the error:6

Don't fall asleep doing dev work. Your laptop may migrate while you sleep and drop on your foot the next morning as you pull yourself out of bed. 13" MBP at 3 feet vs my foot.4
-
My superpower:
The ability to work on huge, complex projects/features without ever getting burned out.
In lieu of that, foregoing the need to sleep! -
I feel like a man out of time and space.
I can work from anywhere so I am nowhere.
I work all the time, and I have no time to work.
Hours, days, and weeks. They all feel the same. The gentle barrier of sleep that denotes when one day ends and another begins is barely remembered if observed at all.
What the fuck did I sign up for.4 -
Wanna have some fun at work.
Print out a beautiful sheet of voice commands for the printer.
Lean back and wait :)2 -
The moment when you start looking into Open Source, view contributors out of curiosity and pick one at random, view his work only to find out that the guy has been developing software since the 1980's before your parents were even married.
Holy shit.1 -
Fuck it. It's Friday EOD.
Enough is enough.
It's time to close my lappy and go for a nice long stroll, get all those work thoughts out of my RAM and get ready for two whole days of slacking!!!!
See you next week, suckers!5 -
Fuck my life sometimes.
I'd just finished my work for an ongoing project, it's been over 6 months only to be dragged out to be told another system needs an immediate change which at best will take 3-4 weeks.
Like seriously just let my mind come off down from the completion of previous project before dropping a new barrel of insanity on my desk 😬
I like being busy, don't get me wrong. but damn not even a day of recovery 😓1 -
!rant
I'm freaking tired of telling colleagues at work not to create feature branch in upstream and use their fork instead.
Turns out idiots can't recognize the difference between a forked repo and the upstream.3 -
So for the past 10 work days I've had my exams (study is software development). I already know that i passed 3 out of 4 stages but I'll get the results of my 4th (aka if i passed the exams) tomorrow. I'm so fucking nervous.2
-
That moment you work out how to get Google Home to make webhook calls, setup a Rpi to accept incoming https requests, and can’t think of anything to actually make it do
Ideas welcome 😂😂8 -
So lotta shit happened lately, life-wise and i don't know why but i have to share it:
There is a point after depression and being stressed out - it's this "well shit will work out someway.."-state of mind, where you have like an inner peace and everything is fine.
It's nice here.😪4 -
That look when a coworker who could not write a logic statement tells you to comment out more of your work!1
-
Someone had the bright idea of going 100% on premise then only having the VPN on the server in the office building with no backup to another server. Well the power went out and no no one can work or work remotely. What a plan.2
-
Just wasted a ton of time trying to figure out why my circuit wouldnt work properly and then noticed...2
-
I was baffled when I found out my girlfriend Google's things as actual questions instead of keywords.
I know it's fine considering the search has to work with voice assistant, I just thought everyone did keywords.11 -
Just got accepted for a game developer. Ive been making games since I was 12 as hobby. Did a few months of university level of Game Development. Then started as web devloper professionally. The company I work for found a project as game dev for me.
I love my work and the sales team for finding me that job, even though its out of scope of their regular projects.2 -
Just started a new job! No rant material so far, I'm just grateful, i was out of work because of the 'rona4
-
"Sudo rm -rf / "ed my build server at work today... Died of laughter when i found out there was no snapshot.
We all had a good laugh. 😂😂😂2 -
Dear brain, could u please work?
"No you motherfugging arsehole, scratch the sand out of your vagina and make yourself your own processor. Fuck u."
Seems like it's the jolly season of "my brain is uncooperative and unwilling".1 -
Reminding myself: No matter how stupid the work is or how a coworker is acting like an ass, it does not matter. I'm here for the salary and I have other things to do out of work.5
-
What a difference three lines of code can make. That's the typical case of "that seemed to be a good idea". I don't know how did I think it would work out on the long run. Next step will be reduceing the enourmous CPU usage as well.3
-
Somewhere there is a developer who writing an AI code that will put most ppl out of work. And he doesn't even know it2
-
When you're wondering why you lost motivation to work in the middle of the day and it turns out you were just hungry 🙌🏼1
-
Yesterday at work the internet went out. Our director of IT stopped by our cubes and the conversation that followed went like this:
Director: "Is the internet out for you guys?"
Us: "Yeah"
Director: "But you can still check your emails right?"
Us: ".... No?"
Director: "But the phones are working!"
*Director walks away to talk with our networking group*3 -
Highschool teacher tells us to work on a little text game, gives us 2 weeks. I wrote about 1600 lines of code with enemys, random map, fighting system,... And generally blowing everything out of proportion as always, because I'm so bored4
-
*clears throat*
Building turn based enemy AI for a strategy game can go fuck itself...
I'm normally able to work out other forms of AI but as soon as I try to work out how to build AI for TBS, I just seem to have my brain exit my body....
I've been at this for fucking hours and have no idea what the fuck I'm doing .-.6 -
I have a habit of leaving random TODOs in random files of projects I work on. Then, when I come back to work on the projects I display a list of all TODOs and try to implement them only to find out that I already implemented everything and forgot to delete the TODOs, on the positive side I feel like I accomplished a lot without actually doing anything 😂😂😂
-
When you find out you passed the exam in which you guessed half of the answers ! 🎆🎉🎊
The algorithms of my brain seem to work well 🤣
This is now my second best module and I didn't study a lot hahaha4 -
After a long day of wrestling with some bad code and getting it to 'work' leaves me feeling dev angst. Then on my way home I see some minor bug in a phone app I'm using and I think to myself, "MY GOD.. all software is made out of SUFFERING."
Behind every tiny defect out there lays some poor soul's looong hours of overtime, stress, tears, alcoholism, and stale popcorn dinners. -
Because of work, I am spending three days in Hamburg.
echo 'Hallo Hamburg';
I just arrived and am excited to check out my hotel room. Hope their internet is fast! 😬24 -
Every piece of work I have to do is blocked, waiting on someone else pulling their finger out. 2 days now, and no progress no matter how much I chase. Bored!7
-
Getting feedback:
- It doesn't work.
Replying within 20 minutes:
- What is not working? Can you be more specific?
Auto reply:
- Out of office. I'll be back [two weeks from now]
FFFFFFFUUUUU -
Not work but
Years ago when i was in middle school i wanted to mess with the school computers a bit so i made a desktop shortcut for shutdown and changed the name and icon to google chrome.
The person in charge of the it department freaked out and thought some kind of a massive virus infected everything.
Long story short turns out they had an event logger installed, figured out it was me and what i did...
I nearly got expelled 😑2 -
Just because I don't have any message in my work email account doesn't mean I have to get shit talk from Microsoft (out of all the tech companies)!!!!2
-
Sent an email to 4 people.
Got 5 out of office auto responses. WTF.
Good thing I don't have work to do 🙃3 -
While my manager whos daily work involves docs, meetings is rocking with highly speced Laptop.
And here I am working on a really old and out of date laptop spending half of my day waiting for things to finish... 😕3 -
I walked into work this morning and before I even pulled my laptop out of my bag a PM asked if I could make a "quick change" for a client 😑4
-
Not dev, but IT...
Just found out that one section of my place of work still uses floppy disks. No I’m not fucking kidding. The other sad part? We still have the outdated computers to read them. 😩😂
Please, send help or a job application...5 -
I just overestimated the fuck out of some tasks because I knew the client would come back last minute and cut the deadline in half.
2 days later they do just that, luckily I overestimated the work so now it's all good.
The annoying thing is that they keep doing this, but since I work for an agency I have no power to drop this client since they give us a lot of work, so that sucks6 -
Still have work to do on this one, but just in case I f*** up the shading, here’s the work in progress. Took me literally five attempts to get the whole quote done. Kept running out of space or writing the wrong word. *shakes fist*6
-
I want to be the CTO in ten years. I'm 25 now, and think it's possible. My former boss was the CTO and he inspired the hell out of me to work hard and invest in myself. I have a lot to learn but I'm eager to figure it out.4
-
I put my CV on one website and I've already had about 10 calls from recruiters. It's nice that they do all the work for you these days, but it kind of takes the fun out of it - are IT recruiters this common everywhere?11
-
Tried to make my qr code look fancy, and it didn't turn out well. My guess is the main part of the qr code must be darker than the complementary part?
(The one in the image doesn't work)8 -
I hate hate hate React! Sorry but to me it's just such a bloated pos of a framework. I realize it was pretty revolutionary at first, the idea of having everything "reactive" and all of that - but newer things like Svelte.js are a dream to work with, whereas trudging through the poorly coded React app I'm supposed to be testing for work is making me want to pull my hair out! I installed a vscode tool so everybody could see what the import "cost" is on everything - a simple INPUT is 50KB of pure BLOAT for something that should and can be way simpler.
I realize there are probably better coded apps out there that wouldn't drive me so crazy, but anybody importing hundreds of KB of 3rd party crap just to get a select box, some inputs, and a date picker are really out of their mind.12 -
Every job interview I go through I feel more certain that I need to get out of my job asap and more doubtful that I wanna work with these companies.
-
My status update for tomorrow:
"I've done the tests and have the results, now all I have to do is work out what the numbers mean coz I started this task 6 months ago and have spent most of the last 6 months putting out fires elsewhere and have no idea what I was doing".2 -
I work for a consulting company, my boss comes into the room full of engineers trying to work on Adwords campaign and asks us what words to use. "Should I use blockchain, I heart that's popular. What about AR?" None of us have ever touched any of those technologies and he's going to try and market us as such to some poor potential client he's going to B.S to. Get me out of here.2
-
I'm not getting kicked out of school! Yaaaaaay!
I've got a lot of work to do this summer but I know I can do it (`・ω・´)b2 -
I have the best of the very best client on Earth.
A kind who would flat out reject with most depression reviews to our best and hardly committed work whenever an payment installment date is near. -
Found out new senior used to work at one of the same places I used to work but a while before my time. So I guess that's what happened to his hair4
-
One of the devs didn't show up to stand yesterday, remote or in person. Turns out he was in the hospital for seizures.
They asked me this morning to work Sunday and I said no. It's not worth the money and I'd rather have the weekend. I don't need to be prone to seizures to know that this level of work is deeply unhealthy.1 -
"Programming is like magic!"... Magic that doesn’t work some of the time and laughs in your face while you try to find out why.2
-
"If you're going to be living in the office, you can at least be on time for work"
This sums my mornings since i started working from home..
8:55 get out of bed
9:00 open laptop....and I'm at work :|1 -
So I had plans of hammering out ludum dare and personal game work... But instead discovered the glory that is extra stout Guiness... Struggled to type this out and Im not even mad!
(Guarantee I'll wake up super pissed at myself for not working) -
Don't you love working out a piece of code in your head that's been troubling you for ages but you can't test it because your at work... It's horrible.
Tempted to whip out vs code and just quickly test my theory in JS...2 -
Have you ever written an awesome tool or library at work and then you want to find a way to sneak it out of the company to use it on your own projects?1
-
I received a computer to work on for work and needed a knife to open the box. That's when my coworker pulled out this nugget of wisdom:
Coworker: My knife has a knife on it.
Me: Really?! Who would've thought?4 -
When you have important not work related appointment, can't work late, suddenly tricky show stopper bug shows up, you have to do dirty hack in fifteen minutes, push to master, run out of work and hope it compiles and works and will be ready for deployement in the morning.2
-
How I work:
I drink lots of coffee and pass out for 12 hours.
It’s like alcoholism, just less productive.28 -
Does anyone here have anything interesting to do? I am free now so looking for something creative to work on.
I don't care about getting any money out of it. AS long as it's interesting I'm in!15 -
If anyone looking to start learning blender because of any reason (like being a masochist among others), check out blederguru's tutorials.
The guy is doing God's work. At least animation Gods. Funny, awesome & detailed content. -
Helpful work advice then: “work hard and we will notice your successes and improvement, we believe in you”
Helpful work advice now: “Evil corporate mfs. Nefarious manipulators trying to fuck you. They want to destroy you and milk the last drop from your pathetic spirit. They would watch you burn in a pit of acid for entertainment. Get the bag and get out fam.”11 -
When you miss a couple of days of work and get back to find out management has decided to do a complete redesign of the redesign you just redesigned! What the flying fuck!
FMDL -
During Summer I'm tired because it's too hot.
Now it's getting cold, it's getting harder to get out of bed...
And the heater makes me tired too...
Plus there's the not going out or, moving as much... Which may also be due to being tired.
And well in general, I seem to not feel like doing anything lately... Because I'm tired....
Seems like my routine is consolidating to: sleep, eat, work...
And if I had a choice it would just be sleep...
I need to get out of bed now so can eat and go work..... But I don't wanna.....
Is it just me? Any tips to break the cycle?18 -
Yahoo finance shut down all their historic data uRL and im out of options. No API or packeges works. I have a report to pass up on tuesday for my ViVa and this is shit. Fuck. My months of work just wasted.7
-
Always saying "yes I can do it" even though Im already backlogged with work out of a fear that Im unreliable.2
-
Today was nice. All the owners were out on vacation except for one. He took me out to lunch and went home after. Even though the office was silent and free of distraction, I did not work... I watched a webinar and played Hearthstone and ingress. Nationallazyday enjoyed.2

Applying for jobs with no experience:
"Ha! So you think you deserve a job? Get out of here! The nerve on you"
Applying for jobs with 2 < years of experience: "Pleeeease come work for us? :3" -
It's not such a good way to disconnect from work to hang out with friends, drink too much, and start coding Python in the sand of a park.1
-
Whatever works that you can get people to work with.
I can’t remember the number of times I’ve warned management against using fancy ass tools only to find out that there literally are no devs on the market who work with it outside fancy ass startups.
Reality is real for a reason.2 -
How many hours of actual productive work do you devs average a day? Honestly, I think I average about 2 hours of honest, good work in my 8 hour day. Between random meaningless meetings that could be emailed out or just daily distractions (coworkers chatting, my phone, etc). Am I alone in this?8
-
So, I just swatted a huge bug out of the air using my work iPad. Because it was the closest thing handy. I'm pretty sure that's not why they bought me the thing...2
-
-release an app (legally)
-stay healthy + avoid sickness
-speak conversational Mandarin
-build passive income (optional)
-get out of toxic work relationship/s (optional)3 -
Been working on some projects that will hopefully train me for work projects on my personal laptop. Ever since my reinstall there has been a crap-ton of screen tear.
Looking at BIOS today...32 MB video ram out of 8Gb...1 -
A while back a buddy and I were keen on making an MMORPG that for a variety of reasons just didn't work out.
Game development is an exercise in futility unless you have a LOT of time and a LOT of willpower. Unfortunately, where the project would have taken at least both of us, only one of us was able to actually do the work. I'll leave it up to you to figure out which one of us it was :|
It sucks because it was a stellar idea, the art style was going to be amazing, and I had already began working hard on a lot of the music. My best musical work to date, just sitting private on my soundcloud, unused and collecting dust.
Listening to them now still fills me with that glimmer of hope to a degree, but it's bittersweet.3 -
When you find out all of your new fellow web devs are all from boot camps, and you spend more time teaching them than getting your work done. New job time maybe?3
-
Just found out I have more work than I can manage stacked up until mid 2018 - all for me and where I am a single point of failure. I have several manager fighting for me and some smaller pieces of work mixed in too.
Any advice on how to get a raise while my stock is high?3 -
This senior engineer had this kid spend most of a day tracing down all of the instances of a certain variable so they could make heavy changes to the software. We work under a change management system of course and all of this led to two weeks of work outside of any of this. The senior engineer ended up 🔥 and the kid very close.
I'm still trying to figure out what makes someone do something like that knowing the outcome. -
Every designer I’ve worked with is too goddamn slow. I always have to drag the work out of them like pulling teeth with your bare hands. It’s just an awful process.2
-
That feeling when you're finally done with a pretty big PR and ready to go live. You excitedly send it out to a few of your peers, and then... 20 comments! The real work has just begun 😭1
-
I wish I could handle tech like my mom did :D Instead of raging and getting angry if something won’t work. She go out, do work in her garden or something and give a damn shit about tech :D techlevel over 9000!2
-
This was meant to happen eventually with this lock-down and WFH thing. In the beginning everything was fine but then my brain has completely lost the ability to distinguish between work place and home.
I am neither able to work properly or rest/sleep and productivity is out of the window.3 -
I really really want to change jobs and pursue being a game dev.
I am so tired of our company kissing our clients' asses, out of fear they might leave, making the developer work an extra mile without the appropriate salary for the extra work, which now I realize why we have alot of sh*ty projects.
I think there is a clear line between customer service and being suckups.
:(4 -
I remember the promise I made to myself when I dropped out of university to look for work.
"I'll explore different areas of software engineering since I like a number of them. But never shall I ever do backend web development"
Guess what job I landed.1 -
Woke up in the middle of the night feeling like I have a ton of solutions to work problems but don't want to get out of bed because I have work tomorrow...
-
Am I the only one who's always scared out of my mind that there is gonna be some real hard ass purno blasting through my laptop speakers whenever I open it at work in the morning?8
-
I suddenly just want to retire.... Job just feels like never ending work.... Can't find time for a break... And well biggest fear in taking a vacation is the amount of work that piles up while I'm gone...
Maybe I suddenly just have burn out... But suddenly just going ah fck... What's the point of all this....
Sometimes wonder, if I didn't have parents around would I just quit and and just do whatever I want until I run out of money...
How many years that would take....10 -
My company got drunk in the meeting decided to go out to town and live it up ... we got loads of work done... I swear...1
-
Decided to try out the new windows terminal app... It may be in preview but oh boy it needs work...
And not just a little work but A LOT of work, I've used prototypes that are more functional :-/4 -
Burned out but still got work to do.
Haven't slept in 2 days now I just want to sleep but can't get sleep.
Damn it fuck,I feel like just beating the crap out of something anything for that matter.4 -
Nothing destroys work flow like management idiots deciding on features and design that they just pulled out of their asses.6

I'm learning Vue.js at home but I'm forced to learn Knockout.js at work because of legacy code. Makes me want to jump out a window.1

The idea of going back to work in an office terrifies me. Like...it really scares me. I really hope things work out even better than I hope and I get to keep working from home while still projecting my career upwards.4

Just published my first internal app, which is nice
We’ve also now started using GitLab, so I need to work out an easy way for use to transfer all of the reports from SourceSafe.
There’s only about 500+ of them, should be fun2 -

What is it like to work for respected software companies? Most of my career I've been doing bullshi@ work I started to hate the entire field. Is there hope out there?5
-
Out of days off since I got sick earlier this month, so have to work from today to friday.
Well, "work" is a big term for someone who's currently paid to finish his website in the company's office :D
There's almost no one here. The company chat is showing 9 people online out of 150. Everything is quite, the 3 other guys in my office are talking quietly, I could sleep without troubles in such conditions.
I'll definitely bring my Nintendo Switch tomorrow, though. -
I heard this at work the other day from a collegue running out of patience with a client
"Well, so what they may have to scroll, but thats life" -

Anyone else test there program or website every like 10 minutes to make sure it works, just to avoid spending half and hour or more coding and finding out loads of things don't work?2

I fear that in the future there will only be 2 possibilities as software developer
either work for pennies out of passion while others profit off your work as more and more open source developers do
or work in a dipshit heavy environment with soul-less automatons who look only to maximize a column or another in a spreadsheet until they are ready to retire and die6 -
Why insomnia, why. And the worst part is tomorrow I’ll be falling asleep at my desk in broad daylight, regardless of the conditions. Right now I can’t sleep because the moon is a little bright and I’m thinking about work. But tomorrow, when it is time to

A friend of mine asked me which Linux distro is beginner friendly, I told him that gentoo is pretty beginner friendly. Next I find a laptop flying out of his house, ok no but he spent 5 days trying to figure out how to get the audio drivers to work.
It's been 10 days and now he's on Windows XP....7 -
I fucking hate going into work after being sick feeling 80%. It sucks because i dont want to use my sick days when I'm doing fine, but i feel so off my game and out of my element.18

Buy some colored pens. The more colors the better.
I did it out of curiosity. Ended up being a life saver when taking notes and planning work on paper. It probably cut my work in half. I spend more time writing stuff on paper and planning stuff, but when I do write 10 lines of code, they turn out to be pure gems fitting perfectly in the entire structure. I write them with tons of confidence, knowing that I had thought of everything and I didn't forget anything, because everything is right there, in color, on the diagrams that I drew.2 -

One thing I have realised these days is that I don't like the work from home setup.
Maybe it's the because of the bad working environment.
I actually appreciate office space more now. Once, out of office, it was easier to zone out of work mode and I didn't feel this much tired when working in office.1 -

So macOS Sierra introduced the ability to sync sort-of important folders like 'Desktop' and 'Documents' between machines.
Nice idea until I forgot that the default of a lot of programs is to set up your project in the Documents folder, and that the project I was checking out from git had two 20G files. Okay, the machine I was working with at home had plenty of disk space.
Turns out my machine at work did not, and happily synced itself out of disk space, which has been causing all sorts of no-not-fun-at-all busy work this morning.1 -

Hi everyone. I'm sorry to take up some of your time. I've recently moved out and am now living alone (broke up with my gf of 3 years). After all the work that I put into moving out, I'm out of energy and I can't find it in myself to do what I want to do. I feel a bit trapped and need some help. If anyone knows a way out of this shithole I put myself into, I'd greatly appreciate it.
I'm also having network issues and, on top of that, I can't install CentOS 7 on a smart array... Not so smart after all, apparently.
I'm generally feeling like I've made a bad choice, but, deep inside, I know I want to focus on work and learning.
Any tips appreciated. Thanks!9 -
Today I left a post it-note on my desk at work saying “EAGER not LAZY”. Realized that out of context that sounds weird. None of them are positive in my opinion. Hopefully only devs will notice it.3

Python just keeps on giving.. everytime i try to do something in python i find out something awesome. The pythonic way of doing things are frikkin cool. I am a huge fan of OOP, and python is my clear favourite until now.

I'm so sick of having to maintain a 10 year old back-end codebase that is built on a proprietary php framework that isn't documented at all. I am still a student, and I'm left mostly alone to figure things out. It's been a while since I started, but it sucks all the energy out of me to figure out how things are built...
My senior is too busy with other projects so when I ask a question I only get answers hours later, and we work remote. He is so busy that he has to consistently work overtime.
I am so overwhelmed...5 -

What do you think of the Database design of Drupal/WordPress? They use 2 tables for 85% of the data!! Product, pages, whatever are all stored in the same 2 tables. Does that work out better than having each content type in separate tables?

Ok, you've got some free time and a folder full of bookmarks to get through the subjects you need for that cert....
....but it has been busy these past few months. One day out of your holiday just to chill and do nothing, then you can get to work....
....you have 9 days. 2 out of the 9 is ok just to relax, it is a holiday after all....
....ok, your going back to work in 2 days and the most you've done is read some semi-related articles that were shared on Twitter. Sort it out....
....24 hours to go, you've essentially done nothing productive. I guess I'll go back to fitting it in at work or convincing myself I'll do it when I get home after a long day.
Anyone else struggle with this? Not just for certs in particular, but just learning in general. -
Finally got some time on my holiday to do some side project work! Turns out it was a looong time since I started this computer.

Looking for some guidance. I am thinking of doing freelance work on the side, but am a little hesitant when I think about contracts, closing out the projects, and getting paid. I even see it with my company where clients keep asking for little things here and there and it adds up to a lot of extra work and refusal to pay until this out of scope work is done. Do you guys have any tools or other suggestions that can help protect me as the developer in a freelance project?
Also, a good PM tool would be helpful too. I'm used to Trello, but it tends to get cluttered real fast.4 -

By experimenting. By trying to integrate different tech and seeing how things work out.
If something doesn’t work out, you know the problems, if something does work out you have one more way of solving some problems.

I don't know why, but even though I have years of experience doing agile both in school and at work, I seem to have a hard time adjusting to the agile work method because I always seem to want to do waterfall.
I don't like the stress of having to rush out a product, nor do I like working on an unknown piece of software (framework/library) without knowing it fully; it just itches me and I get obsessive.
I don't like creating just a piece of functionality and rush it out the door, but I rather like doing it in an R&D type way where I get years to finish a product that I slowly work on, like a modern-age philosopher and scientist.
I know there are companies out there that have this approach, but sadly most of them are agile 'cause they all wanna be cool.. LoL
I'm an old mind in a modern world..2 -

So turns out my manager wants me to do QA automation (not in Espresso btw) of my own items "because we're all in the same team". The weirdest thing is that she's obsessed with "best practices" about daily iteration work such as not starting to work on something until test planning is done (she gets CRAYZEEE about that). Violating one of the core development principles is out the window so I guess the question is am I in a good place to ask for a raise since I'm going to have dual roles?2

Reversed network protocol didn't work, the sent messages weren't acknowledged or denied... basically no response from the server at all.
Turned out, after weeks of cluelessness, that I forgot to append PKCS#7 padding... -
I thought having to test my website on different browsers was bad enough, its a few hours to close of work and I still cant figure out sending a html email because of cross-client compatibility. Waiting on the day when this will be history.

Now watch I know this game
Either they're trying to make me freak out and work extra hard so I'll be disappointed
Or they're trying to make me freak out and be disappointed afterwards after doing good work
Or they're trying to make me happy but have it be disappointed in the end from loss of income
Fuck them lol6 -
currently I'm feeling like a overheated gatling gun....
We'll finish at the weekend a year plus of work.
Should I be happy? Maybe.
But currently it's just frustration cause the whole week was satanic prep work.
Lots of fsicking boring shit, planning, migraine, connecting the dots.
I wish you'd get a nice dose of "fuck everything" medicine at the work for weeks like that.
Remember the chewing gum dispenser from your childhood?
Like that. ID card in. Fun pills out.
(If drugs were only without side effects and addiction.... ) -

As I read some Devs rant they are out of job, thought to share something that came to my inbox.
Company called Toggl is hiring
Check https://jobs.toggl.com
They have some test online to try and most of all jobs are work from home too.

Ever had to switch out a whole serializing layer in an API? Damn that's a lot of work :(
At least the 1952 tests are written well... -
How do you decide on what languages and/or frameworks to use in personal projects?
My uni work is done for the summer on Friday and I want to start working on a couple of side projects.
I use c# at work, and this year I’ve been doing Java and next year I’ll be doing python with uni.
There’s a handful of languages I’d like to work with, but I know that I’ll get the best out of picking one language and digging into it, but I’m not sure how to pick the right one.1
