So I picked up my nephew from his kindergarten and he told me that forks have round holes.
I laughed and said that forks don't have holes, otherwise the food would fall down through them.
It turs out that he was right and I was wrong.2 -
My classmate just fell for a phishing email from "PayPal."
She was talking about her payment being declined to her friend.
It peaked my attention when she said after logging in, she was lead to a blank page.
I asked if I could see it and it was definitely a phishing email
I will admit, it's one of the most professional phishing email I've ever seen, but the grammar wasn't very professional and the PayPal logo wasn't completely accurate.
Why do these idiots fall for everything?32 -
Yep. I worked at a place where my director and manager were true mysogynists. One day the director walks behind one of my subordinates and knees her in the back of the knees to make her fall back so that he can catch her. He does this in front the whole office. I told her that I had her back if she chose to complain. We went to our CO and laid everything out, and he was forced to take action. I was pulled aside and told that I would ruin my career if I went durn this path. I told them that it was more important to me to do the right thing. The director was forced to resign, the manager was reassigned to another location, and yes, my career suffered, especially in the area of promotion. But you know what? I'd do it again, because it was the right thing to do.13

I'm here, wide awake at 4:30 am... Not because my brain is stuck on a problem, but because I am so happy with the code I wrote that I'm too excited to fall asleep.7
-
The only thing I hate about being the on call/standby server engineer is that I've got to stay up until midnight.
Right now I'm tired as fuck, just want to go to bed but I'm doing server stuffs because I've got to stay up for more than two more hours 😩
I don't even mind setting an alarm for 3AM to check if there've been any disruptions because I'll fall back asleep like it's nothing but the forcing to stay awake...
Just one more night!12 -
At job interview.
Interviewer: Have you ever thought about why manhole covers are round?
Me: It's to accommodate different body shapes of sewer workers.
Interviewer: Hahah. It's actually so the covers wouldn't fall in.
Me: It used to be like that, but they changed it.
Interviewer: What? Who changed it?
Me: The lizard people!
Interviewer: What?!
Me: * cowers in corner and hisses *7 -
My mother sits in front of me with her laptop. After a time she asks me, who founded Microsoft. I say: "Bill Gates but why?"
She: "Oh my god, I am winning an iPhone!!!"
I know exactly what's going on, so I go to her and show her the shitty URL and some grammar mistakes in the text and close the tab after explaining that it is phishing.
After that she just looks at me and is sooooo angry about me, because she still thinks that it was real. Only because they "knew which Internet provider we were using and that they just wanted to reward us for being customer!!!". I'm so sad now, because I never thought she would fall for sth. like this... 😔6 -

Today I got the acceptance letter from the university. I will study "Computer Engineering, Software Engineering and mobile platforms", starting this fall. 😀👍

Jobless.
Nah, just kidding.
I'm a qualified teacher, so I have that to fall back on.
That or fixing things, I suppose. I would then design something to corrupt that AI and then I can get hired back when the AI starts its reign of terror.
"Oh no! The AI became sentient and started intentionally fucking code up (and then proceeding to manically laugh at it ((ha...ha...ha...)! Who can save us?"
"I have a team of highly skilled devs, programmers, and a dude who works in a cellphone shop at my disposal. devRanters assemble! (then I just fuck up the code I made initially to make them sentient and commit it - problems solved.)2 -
Nothing but the best for little bittersweet jr., so I mask up and bike out through the rain to buy the tiny girl the most expensive pacifier I can find.
When I hand it to baby, she giggles, grabs the nipple end in her fist, and passionately starts slobbering on the back of this luxury mouthhole-plug, sucking the edge, biting on the ring. Angry grunt, yeets the plastic object out of the crib.
Apparently, it doesn't meet her specs at all. When I fall to my knees asking what else I can do for her, she just pouts, groans, whines, and then falls asleep.
That's when I realized.
When my little monster grows up, she's going to be a product manager.12 -

In the last 48 hours Bitcoin has gained about 2.000 USD in value. (Now ~12500$)
WHAT THE FUCK
And I remember this summer when Bitcoin was at about 4000 and everybody said "naaah I'd rather not invest in Bitcoin now, it will fall in value soon"16 -
Hey devRant. What the fuck is up?
I'm new and just wanted to say hi or whatever. I don't even work in any computer science related job. I'm a fucking welder.
I have aspirations one day to be just like you nerds. I fall asleep at my desk almost every night taking random online programming classes which I lose interest halfway through to some OTHER class and redo the same shit.
Is this what it's like to be smart?36 -
Don’t fall for the hype. Software is not only FAANG, ridiculous perks and fancy corporate offices. It’s a job to give you the things you need to pursuit other things.
Just don’t be a salaryman/salarywomen. There is more to life than that.19 -
Wow, well done Me, pretty successful robot here!
(In all fairness, the wheels don't fall off too much)11 -
Yay, another item to tick off the bucket list.
- fall asleep during a zoom call ☑️
I think I've hit the point of being so burnt out, even self consciousness is hard to maintain.4 -
Installing a new Debian VM/VPS.
Nearly done with all steps and decide to lay down.
Fall asleep and wake up half an hour later.
The grub option is on screen.
I am sleepy as fuck.
Accidently selected the manual option and just pressed enter at the screen where I have to enter the device name.
FUCK.
Well, let's install this fucker again.7 -
Start-up: hires 3 junior devs to save money.
Start-up: expects things to get done faster-- BUT-- Start-up keeps adding things to the TO-DO list and backlog-- i.e. it's all relative!!
Start-up: gets angry at 3 junior devs why they can't deliver when they keep adding tasks and ask we fall behind.
Dev team: "Seriously? You hire more devs to finish tasks faster, but you keep adding more than are being finiahed-- obviously it's gonna take longer now regardless"
Git --pull life together2 -
Fuck those who cover their incompetence with complexity. Fuck those who fall for their shitty tricks. Fuck you for depriving me of any sense of accomplishment with overcomplicating everything to show how smart you are when you are not. Fuck you for creating a culture of overthinking egoism instead of shipping and finding out who was right. FUCK YOU IN THE ASS YOU BIKESHEDDING, MOTHERFUCKING CUNTS!4

My Girlfriend broke with me today.
We was in this relationship from two years now. we was doing very good, our relationship was not toxic, no fights, no bad words, zero problems.
One month ago she goes to travel with her evangelical aunt to the beach. Her aunt have lot of money she gets from scamming all that believers. I was happy for my ex-gf because here in out city she was having lot of problems of health, mainly because she was not very mind stable and that degraded her health.
When she goes, her physical and mental health improve a lot. i was happy she is stable now. Her aunt have some Church around the city they go, aunt started to bring her very often to the church. She started to strongly reinforce they God beliefs.
Of course im atheist, she know that from very long time ago. But of course when she started to be more devoted, feels dont fit with me. I refuse to change my mindset about that topic.
Today she says we must broke because im not a believer. This was the most painful experience in my life. I fall in cry for three hours. I truly love her. I recently wakeup and decide to write this rant. I dont have too much friends to talk apart from her. So i wish to share this here.
Im unemployed, she was my only support all this job hunting times. Now she was gone and im alone, this hurts a lot.
Im trying to dont fall deep af, to non return path.
Fuck religion. and her fanatic aunt.31 -
Boss: agrees to unreasonable deadlines.
Team: misses deadlines because they're unreasonable.
Boss: "you just don't understand how important the deadline is"
He legit thinks the only reason we fall behind, is because we dont care. Not because we're doing stuff that hasn't been done before, and need to tech ourselves everything as we go.
Also, he's not a programmer, he's a salesman... and he runs the company like one too.
Anyone looking to hire a VR/AR developer?5 -
Eh ehe hehe he eh ehehe
On top of burnout, codebase issues, spec issues, burnout, the product butt that keeps on crapping, burnout, burnout, loathing for my employer... My local Apple SSL cert expired. I can’t finish this and push it anywhere for testing. I can’t even run my own specs anymore. And I don’t have permissions to make a new one. I can’t do anything at all.
Ehe he hehe
Deadline is in two days, and I’m just sitting here laughing quietly to myself. I might finally be going crazy
I found a loose bit of tangle, started to pull, and the world decided it was time to fall apart. Reality said it’s time to go. And I wasn’t even a good screwdriver dev. Byeee ~random root’s mind says no specs say no ssl says no ehehe sanity says no product says more more more! codebase says no screwdriver says no 🤪 reality says no burnout says no12 -

Yet another rant about crappy electronic designs.
Just now I was cleaning my desk and stumbled upon some old hard drive in a caddy that I still had laying around.. I figured, let's plug it in and see whether the drive still works. And to some extent, it does! Except that every few minutes it craps out on me. And after disassembling the caddy, I think that I know why.
Just as background information, hard drives work at 12V and generally require about 10W to spin their motor. Meanwhile USB operates at 5V. So a boost converter needs to be present in the controller to step up the voltage and power the drive.
Now what's a boost converter? It's an inductor, a capacitor, a transistor and a diode in a specific arrangement (if you're interested in the design, check out https://youtube.com/watch/...), along with feedback circuitry to stabilize output voltage. Now that transistor is important.. it switches at very high frequency, and its rise and fall times create heat. In the particular transistor used in that controller, it apparently causes the transistor to operate at 65-68°C. That's quite toasty IMO, and overheating may be why the controller is so unstable. But the Chinese manufacturers thought that it's just fine and okay to be sold without heatsink or some research into transistors with better rise and fall times.
So the hard drive craps out on me and yet again it's because of certified shitdesigns. MOTHERFUCKTURERS!!!!27 -
This is for all the junior devs and people moving into the corporate world.
Remember, HR is there to protect the company, NEVER the employee.
Do not fall for the okie-doke when they tell you they are there to help.
If destroying you is cheaper in the long run than damage to the company then be sure they will slit you from ear-to-ear.5 -
One of the bigger and more important IT projects this fall. Technical solution proposal needs to be ready by Thursday morning but is far from complete. Solution? The responsible person for this went on a two day mindfulness training. Apparently totally oblivious to the term "sense of urgency". Must be a citizen of procrastiNATION.3

I didn't actually realize anyone could be this dumb. Sure, I'd heard stories, but I wasn't sure that I'd ever come across this level of stupidity in the wild. I was moving email across hosting accounts for someone, and I asked them to please navigate to a certain domain. Then they asked what navigate meant, so I told them to please type it into the URL bar. They said "OK." 5 seconds later, they said, "Which one do I click on?" They googled the url. So I asked them to please type it into the URL BAR. Then they asked what that was.
...like what? I just told you this yesterday. How fast does information fall out of your head? Do you forget where your toilet is when you wake up every morning? How do these people even function in society?
-_-8 -
HR: "Thanks for reaching out - your resume is quite impressive! Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there's a great fit at this time. We'll be sure to keep you in mind should our needs change in the future though. Good luck!"
Me: "It is unfortunate to hear, but I appreciate the reply. May I ask where exactly did I fall short, so I may be better informed and prepared for the next time I apply anywhere?"
Let's see how this goes. Biggest hurdle? Landing the first job, I swear :(5 -
I have been strongly considering writing a small fb app today named something along the lines of "Hack your fb friends - for realz". Then add basic oauth (You have to login to pick the friend to hack duh), retrieve their friends list and then publicly post to their own timeline and the friends they chose humorously stating they attempted to hack the persons account "for realz". You know just enough to alert people that the "hacker" is a idiot with bad intentions but with just humour enough to fall under "satire" so fb doesn't remove it.
If your bored please feel free steal and implement my idea, it's hereby open sourced and I will even fund this shit on kickstarter 😂6 -
My laptop started making faint high-pitched noises - I hope I misheard and it's actually just some coil singing inside the power-supply and not one of the disks/something else - also, I seem to have dropped 4GB of RAM suddenly where there should be 8GB.
(Also, I should really wipe the messed up dual-boot still residing on disk from last semester and replace it by a fresh arch-only install. (No time and joy in debugging that right now.) Probably something for tomorrow evening.)
The device is ~8 years old by now and starting to fall apart - nothing duct tape can't fix - but I'm somewhat worried about the rest right now. D:
Meh, I really need that laptop during the next two weeks, I just hope the hardware doesn't die on me in the meantime because I can't wait for an order to arrive, let alone afford some cheap replacement.11 -
Continued from pervious Rant.
The Drone sends out a signal to the Headquarters. A "Rare Entity Found" alert shows up on the screen. "Quick, load the map", says the General. Map shows the current location of the Drone. "Dispatch the Team", signals the General while his forehead show signs of tension.
Further down the room, a man quickly types on his phone and hides it.
Far from all this, in a quite city where the street lights have faded away. Old buildings which look like they are about to fall and crumble. The sound of wind can be heard for miles as there is silence all around. A light from one of building's room is turned on and quickly turned off. A man, checks his phone in sleep. Awakens and pours a glass of water to drink. Quenching his thirst, he opens his laptop. Laptop's light is the only light illuminating his room. He again gives a second look at his phone. The message is still there.

Most programming shirts/hoodies really suck. They fall into two categories:
1. Super lame pun quotes in an ugly font.
2. Memes transfer-printed onto cheap fabric
I'm not against puns, or quotes. I quite like the design from @AlexDeLarge
https://devrant.io/rants/830390/, and I've been looking for a nice shirt with Dijkstra's "simplicity is a prerequisite for reliability" on it.
But many do not put any thought into beautiful design, and shit like "No place like 127.0.0.1", "404 girlfriend not found" or "There are 10 kinds of people" really stopped being funny a decade ago.
Good design, colors & quality are so fucking important.
What are your favorite dev-related clothes?16 -
When I learnt programming, sugar was still made out of salt and hence not used in coffee.
Also, we didn't have source level debuggers, only the "print" method. However, compiling was also slow. It was faster and more convenient to go through the program and execute the statements in one's head. This helped understanding what code is doing just by reading it. It also kept people from trial and error programming, something that some people fall for when they resort to single step debugging in order to understand what their own code is even doing.
Compiling was slow because computers in general were slow, like single digit MHz. That enforced programming efficient code. It's also why we learnt about big Oh notation already at school. Starting with manual resource management helped to get a feeling for what's going on under the hood.20 -
"Older versions are more stable"
The whole concept of LTS in development pisses me off.
Delayed upgrading, whether it's the language itself, dependencies or tooling, does just one thing: It makes future upgrading way more difficult, often to the point where the company eventually runs into this maintainability wall, and gets stuck in old, unsupported versions.
"But... stability!" — The tiny chance that the newer version has such serious stability regressions that it negatively impacts your own product doesn't weigh up against the clusterfuck you fall into if you push the task too far into the future.
You can relatively easily assess a new major language version using benchmarks and unit tests. Predicting the repercussions of staying on PHP 5.4 or Python 2.7 for another year, predicting the impact of upgrading the codebase later, that is almost impossible.
I'm not saying you should live on the bleeding edge in production, but as soon as a new stable version of a core technology is released, just fucking drop everything you're doing and port those deprecated methods!7 -
I'm coding in school's cafe at midnight rn because I'm so sure I will fall asleep in my dorm... And then a couple start dirty talking to each other at the nearby table........Fk.me.4

Typical conversation between my parents and me
Parents: Can you make stuff?
Me: Make what?
Parents: The thing you do all the time.
Me: "Computer stuff"?
Parents. Yah...
Me: Well, yes, why?
Parents: What can you do?
Me: Well, I know C# the most...
Parents: Can you then make software like Facebook, Twitter, etc?
Me: Well, I can, but that will take a lot of time.
Parents: You should really make something and make money.
Me: Ok. (goes into my room, and turns on laptop)
(a few monents later....)
--[[CHORUS START]]--
Parents: U DOIN COMPUTER???
Me: Uh-huh.
Parents: When did I said to do "Computer stuff"?
Me: Well, you said to rest.
Parents: But I never said to do your "Computer stuff"!
Me: But you said to rest. For an hour!
Parents: WHY U SHOUT AT ME!!!! TURN OFF THAT **** NOW!
Me: Ok.... (turns off and opens C# book immediately)
Parents: What's that?
Me: C# book
Parents: What's C#?
Me: Programming language.
Parents: Where can you use it?
Me: Make stuff.
Parents: Like what?
Me: (lists my personal projects)
Parents: Show me.
Me: (turns on the computer and shows one of it)
Parents: Good. (leaves)
--[[CHORUS END]]--
Me: (deep breath) Can I FINALLY use the computer?

A good friend of mine turned 38 yesterday. It will be his last birthday. Last month was his last Christmas and New Years. He entered hospice care this month. His doctors have said he's only got a few weeks left, so he's come off the treatment for his brain tumour. His kids are old enough to understand he won't be here much longer. A bunch of us, friends from high school, flew up to see him in the fall. It's hard to believe someone our age won't be with us to see another year. It puts things in perspective.5

My best case "Deploy Bittersweet Pipeline":
Prep a bunch of carrots, cucumber and tomatoes for day snacks. Roll & cut some pasta noodles, cook stock with fresh veggies & mushrooms, add some droopy soft boiled egg(s) to the broth, drizzle in some black garlic hot sauce. Enjoy that breakfast with an unsweetened Australian flat white and a half-liter cup of chai spiced green tea. Watch some science/tech/woodworking/cooking YouTube videos while feeding my Bittersweet Jr girl.
(yeah my mood is determined for about 90% by food)
Fire up docker compose & IDEs, and start refactoring code and migrating/fixing old databases.
My worst case "Fatal Incident Bittersweet Repair & Recovery Process":
Stuck while refactoring the worst kind of trash code since 9am.
Pour a glass of Tawny Port at 9pm. Pour a glass of cognac at 11pm. Unwrap 3 chocolate bars and break them into chunks in a bowl. Look at IDE, get nauseated, not from the booze or chocolate, but from the code.
Can't fall asleep because code is too broken, that crap should simply not exist. Take some LSD and amphetamine, can't sleep anyway. Start splitting several 10k-line-long files into smaller classes, type until my fingers have blisters. Empty two bags of Doritos, order a large Falafel with extra garlic sauce at 4am.
Fall asleep at 5am with my face on my keyboard, wake up at 9am with keyboard pattern on my skin.
Cook some hangover noodles.
Call work that I'm taking 3 days off. Feed Bittersweet Jr while I watch some YouTube channels with her. Bittersweet has successfully rebooted.1 -
Having trouble sleeping, gonna count the "I don't have a social life" posts until I fall asleep.

Why the fuck does people who teach in professional colleges doesn't have the mindset to update their godamnn fucking dinosaur knowledge to the least basics of modern technology.
Had to do this mini-project for uni, and the languages allowed included java, python, php or any similar frontend tools for creating desktop app or web app. I planned on taking React + Express cz apparently that'll fall in the category.
Now she starts yelling at my project saying its not allowed and when I fucking asked her "can I use node.js which is basically javascript" she said yes.
And for gods sake she has a Masters degree and phd but doesn't even know what's the difference between get and post request!! Fed up with this college shit!!7 -
I know a developer who works for a Mortgage Company, and he is dangerously incompetent. He used to work for my boss before I did and we both told his new boss how unqualified he is, but because he's able to get things "done" they think he does a good job. But I've been in the code and their entire system could any day just completely Fall Apart and they could be in a lot of trouble and we tell them this and they don't listen to us.5

My plan to become rich:
1. Create a library / framework that's really just an easy wrapper for other libraries.
2. Write a bunch of books / courses online teaching this "new" library
3. Market it to overpowered but impressionable PM's who'd fall for anything with the word "inovative" in it6 -

My most memorable co-worker? Have quite a few memorable positive and negative ones.
One of the positives was an ex-Marine (only a few months back from Iraq) 'Erin' who 'butt-ed heads' with an ex-Navy "vet" 'Tom' who was also our source control nazi (I've ranted about him before). "Vet" is in quotes because HR decided to research Tom's 'service' (what ship did he served on, etc) for an upcoming salute to veterans. They found out 'Tom' hurt his knee in basic training and had to be discharged.
Tom enjoyed talking his military "service" until HR spilled the beans (another story behind that, I'll share if interested), and when Erin found out Tom never stood foot outside basic training as a soldier, the alpha-male shit hit the fan.
The F-bombs were as plentiful as leaves in the fall.2 -

There was a meme that was going around a couple of years ago, it was picture of the System32 folder in Windows and underneath it was a text that said "If you want to make your internet download speed faster, delete this folder". I had shared it on Facebook, thinking nobody could fall for this.
Surely enough, about half an hour later came the surge of messages saying that they're not able to delete the folder and wanted help. Most of them were my classmates in college.3 -
One day, I was waiting for a friend to install windows... after 2h he just says: ah, I'll just take it home and wait it out there!
So, he put his laptop in his bag (btw the usb stick was sticking out) and left it there.
Just as he stepped away from the bag, the bag just decided to fall down and exactly on the usb... and ofc it broke down...
The face he made I'll never forget.1 -
Every time I have to recall how to LaTeX, it's a huge pain in the ass. It's like learning to code in Greek (I don't know Greek). Happens every single time (it can be months before I need to use it again).
However.
Every time I finish my creation, I fall in love with LaTeX all over again.5 -
I started learning ASM x86_64, so I chose MASM with VS 2013 because is the best for debugging
So I just waste like 2 hours trying to make a simple program like printing fibonacci numbers to start with ASM
The problem started when using printf function, after calling printf function, local vars became garbage, after googling and looking for the ultimate answer for the problem I found the site with the ultimate answer (https://cs.uaf.edu/2017/fall/...) and it was that MASM64 when calling a function you must allocate space with the actual space from the current function + the allocated space for the printf13 -
I feel like I've ranted this before. many times. but here we go again because Australia.
why do people think you can just ban math? like really?! that's what crypto laws do. they require companies to use shitty math. and what prevents me from using the good math? nothing! oh I mean... I won't use it? scouts honor.
you can't ban math.

On my project the customer has re-signed into a contract several times when they have budget to continue work. The first time they got us to build the system was a huge success story because the team was assembled quickly and we did rapid development. Initialize repo to prod in 1.5 months. The customer asked for the same dev team. Strong dev team, a PM that doesn't take shit, and pure agile. Lets call her don't-take-shit PM.
When the customer re-signed the executive decided that she didn't like don't-take-shit PM. So the project manager gets replaced by play-by-the-rules PM who will comply with stupid requests and micromanagement. He isn't a bad PM but he tries to make everyone happy. The amount of management types executive installs on the project is massive, and development team is cut down in major ways. Customer and executive shit rolls down to the development team and we can't get anything done. The customer starts to lose faith because we can't get traction. They start demanding traditional waterfall/SDLC docs. Which causes more delay in the project.
So the executive decides that the PM can take a fall for it to save face for the company. She moves play-by-the-rules PM to another project. He starts handover to a new PM that has a history of being her pushover. The customer hadn't seen him yet so now we have push-over PM.
Play-by-the-rules PM is finally out of the project and instead of moving to a different account the company decides to "lay him off because there is no work". So basically they made him take the fall for the failure while promising reassignment, and instead let him go. This is so unfair..
Meeting with push-over PM yesterday and he shows us his plan. Identical to play-by-the-rules PM's plan that got him axed.We point that out and show him the docs that were made for it. His face clearly communicates "OH SHIT WHAT DID I SIGN UP FOR?"1 -

Saw someone shared some scary shit.
Shook to the core.

OK I can understand he his not a technical guy but what kind of answer did he expect from me on "what could go wrong while you create the new server on AWS?", I had no idea what to say so I whent with "a meteorite could fall on the amazon building"2

@ Developers who don't comply to ISO 8601
I really hope you get to a really nice ice cream shop, get some amazing ice cream, only for you to trip, and fall right on top of the ice cream, ruining your favourite shirt in the process.17 -
I have a server. I want to filter connections to that server so only people on my work network can access the server. A quick search yielded my public IP address.
"Is this static?" I asked IT. "Do we have static IP address?"
"What do you mean? What do you need that for? You better know EXACTLY what you are doing before we release that information to you!!!! This needs to go to my manager. My manager is demanding to know why you want that information - we are having Network Engineering look into this request, someone will be in touch to find out more."
I have now been waiting for 3 hours. I think I will just go ahead and assume my IP is not going to change...undefined infosec how many engineers does it take i am on the 10th floor the fall would kill me corporate america5 -
Biggest hurdle I have overcome is <b>myself</b>.
All my expectations, worries, fears, and doubts definitely caused major hurdles I had to crash through, trip and fall into, or they downright exploded into balls of fire as I would stand dumbfounded and burned by flames of regret.
Learning I was the blocker to greater achievement, success and ultimately happiness was a very hard lesson for me to learn, and a lesson and discipline that I still battle with today.
It is difficult to climb the seven story mountain of madness with heavy burdens, plodding with little progress.
Free the weight, and the natural warm air currents will lift high the spirit, and the body will follow.

Always keep trying, never give up on the bugs you have.even if you have to start over again.
Someone once asked me:
Why do we fall?
I answered him:
To rise up again even stronger.4 -
I went to every career fair in college. Every semester I dressed up, redid my resume, and went like a champion desperate for work. Last fall I went, and only gave one resume. As I was leaving, I turned back after a question popped into my mind. Watched the recruiter put that resume in the trash. Worlds worst recruiter.

The problem when you fall asleep while coding...
you may have really good thoughts before you pass out, you want to formulate them properly so "you" in the morning can get to work immediately, so you close your eyes just for a sec to think. And then you wake up at 10am and you have no idea what was supposed to be the ending of that TODO.
shit5 -
Just updated to Fall Creator's Update.
I've got to say, Windows seems much snappier than before, apps open faster than they used to do, and I haven't had any issues till now. For the first time I found a windows update that I actually like. Thank you Microsoft2 -
Blizzard.
I’ve been a huge fan of pretty much every blizzard franchise for a long long time.
However recently the companies attitude towards its customers has reached breaking point, insert “you think you do but you don’t “ & “don’t you guys have phones?”.
They’re unfortunately driving many of their franchises into the ground at the moment and at their current trajectory I can see a really bad fall coming.
A lot of gaming companies need to really listen to their communities and stop this micro transaction Armageddon that’s happening just now.9 -
I'm supposed to be sleeping... It's 12:30 am.... But I don't feel like sleeping...
And so I started browsing devrant...
But then I realized something... the screen is too bright.... not gone help me fall asleep....
Then remembered...I have flux installed but disabled.... for months...
Just turned on before writing this...
The screen is so much nicer to look at.... And now I'm feeling sleepy...4 -
Fuck you. Fuck you brain / body / wathever regulate my sleep cycle.
Went to sleep early, 9:30 amazing! Allarm is set to 4:30 I get 7 hours of sleep yay.
But no, let's wake up at 23:30 fully wide awake and do not be able to fall asleep anymore.
Now is 8:11 and on my way to the gym and then work I started yawning and I feel like sleeping.
Seriously? I would pick out that part of my brain, chew it spit it and then throw it to rats to feed on it.
Coffe where the fuck is my cofee??
Oh today is also the day we start an awesome new opencsource project that I was looking forward to. AND I AM TIRED AS FUCK.5 -

I'm absolutely loving the fact that my university is making me take their intro to programming course this fall when I've taken 5 programming classes in high school and already have intro to programming credits from a different university. Did I mention that I passed the AP Computer Science exam before taking even more courses? Do they not understand that I do in fact understand how to use recursion(the most advanced topic in their intro course) and don't need to spend a semester relearning what I already know? For Christ's sake they don't even get into OOP in that course.3
-
Looks like it's time to update the old CV... Christ have I really been here for 8 years.
It's been fun, the most fun time of my life but with new owners breathing on everything stuffs starting to fall to shit.
To use a SysOps analogy there are category 1 - critical warnings ringing in my ears.
I can accept a lot, but I'm genuinely concerned for the future of this place, and after trying to fix things for long enough to realise the new owners are the ones drilling the holes in the ship it's time to sink or swim, and I don't feel like sinking.
To quote billy Joel,
It seems such a waste of time
If that's what it's all about
Mama if that's movin' up
Then I'm movin' out1 -
I fucking hate people who report somebody else's work as their own successes so much.
I've written a fair amount of perf tests for our project so far (actually I'm like the only person doing that). Some fucker from another team asks me if I could write one more. I agree, because why not. I spend a few hours, making sure to cover all cases and commit the test. Then the same fucker runs it and reports it as HIS PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS.
0 credit given to me. Fuck you, I just wanted to be helpful and you used this.
I'm still quite young and tend to fall for shit like this, but getting more and more grumpy because of those people.4 -
Core library was giving serious blow out of execution speed as data file size increased.
Traced it back to a GetHashCode implementation that was giving too many collisions for unequal objects, so when used as the key in a hash table it was causing the lookup to fall back to checking Equals (much slower).
Improved the GetHashCode implementation, and also precalculated it on construction (they were immutable objects), and run time went to warp speed! Was very happy with that.
Obviously put in a thread sleep to help manage expectations with the boss/clients going forwards. Can’t give those sort of gains away in one go. Sets a dangerous precedent.1 -
Due to a very unfortunate rectangle packing solution, my bed is currently at a 30° angle to the grid of the room. It's unexpectedly hard to fall asleep when every object in my vision adheres to a single shared grid except for my bed.10

I am beyond fucking frustrated at this point. I feel pretty confident that I was just blocked from getting a position at work because they believe the current team I am on will fall a part without me. I’ve asked for a backup for years but they never got one for me. I have great folks on my team but despite knowledge transfers, they just don’t get it. I am ready to grow within the company, develop better soft skills, learn more about the other groups etc. but I don’t have the opportunity to. Also, I was passed up for someone outside of our group to manage our team a few years back despite being the lead since day 1. That’s two promotions I’ve been denied despite getting exceeds on every review I’ve ever had. I am so pissed that they would do that to me.5

Childhood dementia is the saddest thing I’ve ever seen.
You’re fourteen. You don’t have mental disorders. You used to be sharp. Yet, you’re not really there anymore. But your mother didn’t smoke during pregnancy, and you did nothing to deserve it.
Your personality, memories, everything that makes you “you” just rots away. There is no cure. You’ll never fall in love, never have your first kiss, your first boyfriend, never travel the world, never be a prom queen, never marry, never have kids.
You’re dying, and you’re too far gone to realize it.10 -
1. Coding gets me naturally high. Mentally sound and sharpens my focus.
2. Beating a challenge by code is fun. And watching something I spent much time on working is great. Like setting up all those dominos to watch them cascade and fall down one after another...bliss!
3. People think I'm smart because I can type instructions into inanimate objects and make lights flash on the screen.3 -
I DID IT! I got my first co-op job!! I’ll be starting in the fall and I’m super excited 🤩
Finally I’ll get to do real work and I’ll get to see just how far schooling has gotten me.
Gotta admit I’m a tilt bit worried I over sold myself in the interview but we will cross that bridge when we get to it 😅
I’ll also finally have some real rants soon enough 😏😅1 -
Each day DevRant seems to be closer to being overrun with ads, many to scammy crypto services.
The question that won't rest, though, is this:
In THIS social network is anyone so naive or just plain stupid enough to fall for ANY of those scams? Or actually buy any of the crappy services?!?5 -
"Don't fall for the hype. A lot of ideas, groups and methodologies are basically cults trying to advertise their consulting services. While I have no problem with that, just remember that when you run into one of these guys and they are quick to shit on the alternatives to their way (and those who built them) to always be very suspicious."
Context:
We had the opportunity to meet 2 very bright people who were heads of their respective communities in a similar area. They were both talking a lot of shit, and getting kinda harsh.
A brilliant dev I worked with, who knew both people for years, took me aside and told me this.

My final exam for Python3. I had previously failed this course, and the exam only had three questions. If I failed to answer one question I would have to take the course over, and my GPA would fall so hard that I wouldn't be able to take the course again. So I was extremely grave, and extremely anxious beyond belief.
I uploaded the two easy answers to the site.
And the last one was so baffling to me I stayed 5 minutes extra to figure it out. I nearly failed so badly.
My GPA is now 3.6 again. (😤 "Triumph" emoji)2 -
Got out of bed, went to toilet to take a piss and as i was finishing pissing my eyesight got blurry, i felt dizzy, losing energy and then i just woke up laying on the floor without remembering anything what happened. If anyone is using the fall creators update of Windows 10 and wondering why they are not receiving notifications from devRantron, it's a known problem with Electron and Windows 10 FCU.
I will update the app again once the issue in Electron has been fixed.
I also recently released an update which fixes the "Post Comment" textarea becoming out of focus when you receive a new notifications. And some other bugfixes as well.3 -

I don't build it

Step 1: It is at least 1am, I am reasonably tired.
Step 2: I figure I need to be productive at some point.
Step 3: Browse random websites until the end of time (probably 20m of nonsense)
Step 4: Suddenly I'm super motivated to actually get something done, slapping some music on and starting to work until I fall straight into bed.
Good days.
Seriously, the thing that motivates me the most is probably music.1 -
So management wants this:
As soon as a customer reports a bug, management wants to have an "emergency button" to let their inexperienced hands make production fall back to the last stable version, without having to pass through IT and wait for them to fix it. If the server catches a 500 error, this process should be done automatically. All because they don't want to give us more time writing more thorough tests...9 -
I'm still wet behind the ears as developers go, and about a month ago I cobbled together a webservice. After many bug fixes I somehow got it working as intended, held together by tape and shoestring and creaking all the while.
This week, one of the consumers of the service wanted me to open it back up to change the name of the request .xsd. no functionality changes, just a name change.
I protested, worried my service would fall apart if I breathed on it. But he insisted so I made the change.
I just tested it and... it's working as intended.
But I still want to be mad about this!! -
You know what's the worst in doing software?
being assigned that dreadful project, that's doomed and cursed just from the start. Nobody dared to try or touch it for 7 years, because it's destined to fail. You will never get the resources to do it properly, all the constrains are just against you. Even as the requirements bars are lowered and lowered you barely make it. You keep testing that shit with QA for like 8 months past schedule. Then before release some core changes need to be done. It passes QA, but you somehow now it's just a ticking time bomb. It will just crumble and fall somewhere out there, if somebody dares to use that shit for real.
And so it goes.
Bug reports coming in.1 -
Okay so this is my first desk job. I'm experiencing some personal issues and wondering if they are normal, what you do to combat them, etc.
First of all, some days, I literally almost fall asleep on the job. Caffeine doesn't work much. I know it's just my sleep schedule but what should I do in this situation? What if I actually do fall asleep?
Secondly, I'm finding that my productivity only exists in bursts. I'll do three hours of work in 10 minutes, and then 10 minutes of work in three hours. I can't just catch a stride. How do I become more consistently productive? Should I be more consistent?
My legs hurt. Sitting all day is not for me. I guess this is more situation to situation, and I do walk almost 6k steps a day on my breaks, but it really doesn't feel great most of the day.9 -
On top of all the shit that's going on right now... This morning my shower head broke of, so now I can/have to hose myself to cleanlines.. Can't wait for corona shit to pass so I can start looking for a new place to live that will hopefully not fall apart.. :/
And then my laptop decided to do a harikiri.. MMD! Fuuuuck oooofffff!!9 -
Init Mud. (A poem)
A Giant Ball of Mud.
Haphazard in structure.
A sprawling, enthralling, duct-taped warning,
Of things to come.
Tumbling down a well-worn path
Of untamed growth and aftermath.
Into Spaghetti-code Jungle.
Where quick and dirty wins the day
And warnings spoken hold no sway
Or fall on deaf ears in the undergrowth.
Tumbling.
Gaining weight.
Bits stuck on.
Bytes taken out.
Patches,
On top of patches,
On top of obsolescence.
Hacked at, uploaded
All elegance eroded.
Made and remade
Then duplicated
Relocated
Refined and redesigned
Suffocated by expedient repair after expedient repair
The original self no longer there
Replaced by something
Unwieldy.
Design resigned to undefined
An architectural mystery
Whose function can no longer be
Seen or gleaned
From obfuscated in-betweens
Of classes
Made and remade
Duplicated.
Abused.
A squirming library of disused.
Pulled at, prodded, committed
Corners cut and parts omitted.
Bug ridden branches fused to a rotting core.
The structure...
The system...
The content...

Does anyone ever fear falling behind the technology 8-ball.
I made a career move from web dev to mainframe in COBOL. I've been here two weeks and feel like learning COBOL is wasting my time and making me fall behind.
Thoughts?10 -
There is an electricians shop just outside my apartment. Their favorite thing to do is yell conversations across the parking lot in the hour after dawn.
They finally shut up an hour before I need to go into work, when it's too late to fall back asleep. Ugh.4 -
Watched a co-worker configure a new "MacBook pro" as a replacement for the four-year-old one this personcurrently has. A replacement machine is justified as the old one is on the fritz... Naturally because MacBooks aren't any better than any other machine, build quality or otherwise. I still cannot fathom why anyone would even consider budgeting over $3000 for a single machine, only to then buy several adapters just to make the thing work.
Apple is off the deep end. People who fall for that BS are off the deep end.
I feel like showing the manager several alternative models at half the price just to make the point that MacBooks are a pointless waste of money.4 -
past time: Making jokes on programmer humor forums about the jokes being told on the humor forum.
fall out: Autists who don't get the joke of the joke and genuinely think they need to explain the original joke even though it is "obvious" it was a play on words.
struggle: Resisting explaining to them the joke on the joke. And if I break down and explain, trying not to be a condescending prick. Most of the time I don't respond.3 -
I would probably open 2 locations.
A small seaside cafe that would bring exotic types of coffee, roast them in house, package them and sell them. Also have a small breakfast menu for the coffee lovers to enjoy before their walks on the beach.
The second would be in the middle of a busy city a concept of bar/hostclub with a twist. I would hire mostly women and men that have minors/degrees in psychology, teach them how to bartend, and have like a bar/therapy place where the people that work horrible jobs can come drink chill and feel a bit better and not get blackout drunk / fall into alcoholism3 -
In my opinion, russian nation's chronic inability to fight oppressive regimes is partly attributed to one interesting quirk the russian language has.
When talking about injustice committed against someone, or making threats to commit said injustice, the actor is completely omitted.
Here's an example:
“Надо будет — найдут”, roughly translated to “they could find you if they wanted to”, is a common phrase to use when talking about proxies, VPNs and other online privacy measures. But the word “they” in English translation is nowhere to be found in the original text! Let's examine the literal translation:
- “надо будет” — “the need will arise”
- “найдут” — “will find you”
The English phrase “they could find you if they wanted to” can be easily challenged with a simple question: “Who's they?” The government? The corporates? The regime? The CIA? Who exactly?
English language can mimic that with passive voice: “you are being watched”, “you are an easy target”, etc. But in active voice, you can't avoid using “they” or some other actor.
In russian, you can. And you will. Indeed, this is how russian people converse. It's a very specific, very common pattern that never really changed.
It's a very powerful thought-terminating cliché built straight into the language. You can't fight an enemy that has no name and no word to describe it, not even a euphemism. The very language you THINK in prevents you from analyzing the entities that oppress you.
In a Tom Scott Plus video where he tried tightrope walking, he learned that they don't say the “F-word” — “fall”. You can't say “I'm afraid I'll fall”. You have to find more specific alternatives like “I'm afraid I'll lose balance”. The word “fall” in this context is a thought-terminating cliché. There is no going back after you “fall”. But if you “lose balance”, you can “regain balance” — the lack of a thought-terminating cliché promotes problem-solving.
Russian language is the same, but in soviet russia, language terminates you, I guess.1 -
I teach military students how to operate a UAS control station and these things are as complicated as computers get. ATCA's and the most crazy stupid network setups I've ever seen. My worst legacy code experience:
>10k lines of switch case statement with "some" fall through.
Even fall through for 4 or 5 cases.
This monster was copy pasted and modified over years (Order of the case statements and another fall throughs).
So you can't diff this piece of shit for refactorings.
Luckily I leave that company. -
So there are consequences to being an experimenter. Currently trying to develop my own smarthome, and last night, I was fixing up some lights. Just soldered some wires together, and hung it up by the outlet on the wall. And it worked!
But I didn't want it to just hang, so I moved it around a bit. And obviously because of my shitty soldering job, not really insulating anything, I created a short circuit, sparks everywhere, and blew a fuse in the electrical box. No problem, I'll just replace the fuse.. Except I didn't have any lying around, and it was 1am...
So I had to get up at 8am when the stores opened, and buy some fuses. Couldn't fall asleep again, so I started cleaning my apartment (I've possibly gone crazy from the electrical shock), and now I'm in my 3:30pm till midnight shift...3 -
Got a PROD issues caused by missing data from upstream. Told them about it last week. 3 days of no replies.
Finally got a reply that they will look into it. It's been almost a week since I first told them but no responses and no solution yet.
I couldn't fall asleep because I guess I drank too much coffee but also cuz the thought of this pissed me off.... So got up and sent a work email basically threatening to escalate this all the way up, put their asses in hot water.
Though not sure if I can but.... Maybe I can take a disability leave for needing to mentally recover from going mad at other people that can't do their jobs but aren't fired...9 -

Re-watching old episodes of mythbusters. S2E1, they test "better to walk or run in the rain"
Their method totally pissed me off.
They had cotton suits on their body and measured the weight difference before and after.
Except the cotton suits DIDN'T GO ON THEIR HEAD.
Where is most of the rain going to fall when walking slowly and the water source is directly above your head? Head and shoulders.
So of course their findings were that you got more wet when running, as some of the water got on their belly instead of their head.
Can't find anyone talking about it online so had to rant about it here. So fucking stupid7 -

What happens to a fart?
Does it disappear?
Well my science background says it cannot disappear. So what happens to the fart?
My theory is that the air cools and can no longer suspend the butt particles in the air. So all the particles fall to the ground. On the ground this forms a layer of butt dust.
So remember when you walk around the house without shoes on. There is butt dust sticking to your feet.10 -

Oh BASIC night, the LEDs are brightly glinting;
It is the night of the dear GOSUB’s birth!
Long lay the world in sin and error printing,
Till you appeared and the RAM felt its worth.
Shiver of fear, line numbers do inspire,
For yonder breaks a mostly harmless GOTO.
Fall on your bits, O hear the Visual voices!
O BASIC divine, O BASIC where GOTO was born!
O BASIC, O Holy BASIC, O BASIC, you’re mine!
Some want to say, “GOTO is harmful always,”
But what of them, in their post-modern world.
We PRINT the truth, in the line-numbered goodness,
But Dijkstra appeared, and the faith, it was lost.
A thrill of hope, when .NET BASIC announces,
But Visual BASIC, what kind of thing are you?
Fall on your GUI, O see the old line numbers!
Behold BASICA, O BASIC when DOS was born!
O numbers, O lines, spaghetti divine!

Anyone here tried the bluewhale game?
Apparently, government banned it and local tv channel is running news about it ( around 2 months after it became viral globally ). Many overnight "experts" think it is an actual mobile application game uploaded on all stores. What a joke!

I love our industry but it’s filled with way too many tech grifters, fakes and waste men pretending to know what they’re doing. A lot of whom low key hate coding and the people that do it, wish they were as good and those people yet lack the self awareness and humility to see where they fall short and actually learn the technology.
Even if you see the industry as just a way to make some money, learn how to code and if you can’t do that then learn to appreciate the process. Stop talking as if you know what you are doing while embarrassing yourself and coming off as a dunce and condescending to those that do.5 -

When older family members have entire notebooks dedicated to logging obscure, easily-hackable passwords, but then download any app in the world that promises to "make your phone run like new!" (by using 30MB more RAM on God-knows how much malware)
We aren't doing a good job of educating people if anyone we know can fall victim to those kinds of hackneyed procedures and snake-oil apps. It's almost painful to watch, and have to be the bad guy by telling someone dear to me they've been making things worse for themselves because of a seemingly harmless app that they were almost proud of.3 -
So I'm in a meeting with the Company director where I'm contracting for a few months. She is explaining the company history, goals etc. I can feel my eyes drooping, my head tilting and my body sloooowly sliding of my chair. Im literally fighting to stay awake. She is about to explode and go crazy BUT the business manager flies in explains to her that I have a medical condition known as narcolepsy...meaning I could be half way through a conversation and I fall asleep and it's not anything more than that
....When she said my name is thought to myself yep I'm outta here...4 -
Help me someone, please. I just installed the Fall Creators Update and tried the latest version of Edge. It's lightning fast and it looks gorgeous. What's wrong with me? Should I seek counselling, or up my medication?1

The problem when you spend basically all if your technical life working by yourself, is that you are not used to understand programs you didn't create. Specially when there are no documentation or a single line of useful comment.
I've tried to help in an open source software just to get frustrated and fall short because I couldn't understand where things were getting initiated/called and I don't have too much free time to keep trying/searching.
Any tip here? I don't really need to learn that, but I think it is important. We never know about the future and I don't want to get stuck/uninployed in the future if I loose my ~15 years job someday.5 -
I really hate that smart people are the worst kind of cultists. This means that people who do some pretty cool and novel stuff fall for things like Musk-fanboyism, NFT and other crypto BS, or things like outright fascistoid ideas about "MSM"-conspiracies, race-ideology or IQ... And I hate it.
Smart people who think they have "figured it out" are the most dangerous people out there. Especially if they have any kind of rethorical skills.10 -
Microsoft is fucking kidding me with the fall creators update, default onscreen keyboard is so tiny (that little black box below the login form) that the letters are rendered indistinguishable and you can hardly touch them with your finger. WTF?!?!4

So everyone here has probably seen many posts ranting (or should that be rants posting) about windows updates in the lastest version of Windows. I have seen one too many rants about losing work due to this well it happened to me to. ..almost.
Since I have an editor that saves work automatically I didn't lose anything but just had to restart by applications and set my windows how they were again. It wasn't planned and I had previously manually disabled windows updates but they still ran and rebooted my machine...grrrrr!
Doing some more research I found my previous fix which worked in Windows 10 1511, and 1607 versions (anniversary update and prior) doesn't work in version 1703 or 1709 the Creator's and Fall Creator's updates respectively.
If you have version 1511 or 1607 you can just disable the windows update service and windows store service and appxpackage services to completely stop windows updates and unexpected reboots. I ran it like that for over a year from 2015 well into 2017. After being impressed with the newer Fall Creator's update I decided to manually update to 1703 and then to 1709 which is the latest version.
The problem is, the old disable service fix isn't enough now in these newer versions. To disable updates in the newer versions you have to stop the usoclient which is the update orchestrator. Simply disabling the services doesn't work anymore.
Changing the file permissions of the usoclient will work and stop the scheduled tasks from firing.
Here ya go, no more unscheduled reboots. YOU pick when you want Windows to update:

Trying to switch from 2 finger bird-view typing to 10 finger no-view. Fuck this is hard! I'm just veeery slowly getting used to it, although I tend to fall back automatically when I don't focus on it and just want to type in a few characters.
I keep doing several typos and often forget where a key was exactly or confuse the position of some character, even though I typed it fairly often before. Also typing any number or non-alphabetic letter is mostly a wild guess of finger position.
Either I'm a very slow learner or smth's wrong.😪5 -
Do you guys know the feeling when your opening PR on side project late at night..
The CI takes forever to make all the analyses and checks and you almost fall asleep because your so fucking tired? -
How do you deal with anti-competitive clauses in contracts with your employer?
I have found them to be unavoidable here in the field of IT/CS related fields, and I don't want that to affect my future career as much.
My current strategy is to gain more of other skills than just in software development, so I can fall back on those skills for a different field (e.g. DevOps, sysadmin, ...) instead of being unemployed for a year because I didn't like my workplace anymore.
The only other way I can think of would be to open my own company, but I'm not going to be ready to do that right after school.
Any other thoughts?3 -
Plz help...
I’m a student and developer, working every night my butt off for the last 2 years, not going to sleep till 2,3,4,5am, and taking tablets to keep my brain running and not fall asleep. Getting clients and about to sell my programming company in 2 months...
My programming teacher teaches the class such basic shit, she explains the topic very well, but for me she’s explaining how to do 2+2... last time I starred of to the window and almost started crying...
I’m very passionate about programming, Work sucks cause I need to make secure smart systems with math that take forever, I want to at least enjoy it In class, but it’s torture, fucking torture...
What should I do?6 -
If at first you don't succeed, blame the framework; then the language; then your colleagues and eventually fall into a deep depression when you realise that the only person you truly have to blame is yourself.
Then blame the framework again, and suggest an immediate move to the latest ill-advised JavaScript contraption in spite of horrified gazes from your disillusioned colleagues.1 -
I am my teams goto guy for anything and everything. For any problem they face technically.
They think I am some kind of genius. But in reality I just Google. :/ I don't know most of the things they ask!
The saving grace is that, whenever I try to solve anything, the pieces of the puzzle quickly fall into their places in my head.
Now the impostor syndrome is kicking in hard!1 -

After a couple of depressing weeks with no progress on my projects and seeing reject emails one after the other, it feels cathartic to see some real momentum on my projects and finally scheduling telephonic interviews with multiple recruiters.
When it rains, it pours, but when it shines, you also get rainbows. :)
Fall is coming, the colors are changing. -
Just watched Zombieland 2 in the cinema and the dumb blonde girl in the movie was so fucking sweet and adorable and NOT TO EVEN MENTION HOW HOT SHE WAS, but i fucking fell in love with her PERSONALITY, i know its an act but i also know there are people who exist with that personality, this is very weird to me because i fall in love by the looks, rarely by the behavior but i this time i love her because of her personality lol what the fuck is this
I didnt know it was possible to fall in love with someones personality like i dont even have the urge to fuck her just to love her for personality lmao
Aight im talking about this like we are exclusive but it was just a dumb but chill movie9 -

Does anyone else fall into the 'TODO' trap? I just finished my website (using jekyll) and I've got a stable build that I like and I should probably start writing content for it but at the same time, it would be cool to set up a better color scheme and refactoring the css into sass. Anyone else get caught in the trap?3

Merry Grav-Mass!
So I saw many „Merry Christmas“ posts here lately.
But many of you may have forgotten that 25th of December is the birthday of the greatest physician and mathematician of all time — Isaac Newton! So let's celebrate the existence of comprehensible physical laws!
One way to celebrate Grav-Mass is to decorate a tree with apples and other fruits. Glue them or attach them, but not too well! The idea is that occasionally a fruit should fall. Put them on the tree no more than 2 feet up, so that they won't get damaged or hurt anybody when they fall. Investigating and perfecting the methods for doing this is a great way expose a child to the process of scientifically studying the behavior of the physical world.
Merry Grav-Mass and happy New Year! 🍎

I love 2:30 am support calls, especially for a system I know nearly nothing about and when I'm supposed to be 4th in line for a call.
Hopefully I made the right decision. Now let's see if I can fall back asleep.2 -
FUCK rabbit holes real hard. When you spend a week creating a super optimized recursive handler for mapping redundant database row results and you wake up from your coma realizing everything could be handled by a much simpler SQL query done in five minutes. Fuck me, fuck the rabbits creating holes to fall into and fuck Alice for creating the fucking illusion of wonderland.

Okay govs and schools should stop this robotic production by forcing children to learn coding since an early age of 10. It's ridiculous !
Not only are you not giving a shit about whether they are interested or not, you are saturating an already saturated industry. Moreover, you are encouraging young children to sit all day in front of a screen when they should be playing, doing and learning other things.
Let them discover the subject. Let them fall in love with programming and coding. Don't force it onto them...4 -
The start of a new chapter of career life...
Until now, I always saw myself as the base raiser... but raising the base is not what everyone else on my team wants...
Only took me 3 years to realize... so I guess time to just fall in line...
I guess it's why some smart people act dumb on the job... It's just easier to blend in...18 -
Hey everyone. I am a freshman in college studying Cyber Security. I have been practicing various programming languages such as httml, css, java script and SQL. Does anyone have any recommendations for resources to study? My end goal is to be blue teaming for my schools Cyber Defense team in the fall.5

10 Months ago i started with webdev. Before i never program at all, but i Fall in love. The only thing i hate about webdev is this.
dude:look at my Website?
me: how did you do this?
dude: i used 900000 frameworks. it was really easy.
me: ...
I know.. you don't need to reinvent the wheel, but if don't think about what actually happens, where is the fun??
i don't know if it is also the case in Software dev but i don't like the way it evolves6 -

I found a way to become rich with low effort!
I'll become a python developer.
I hope some fucker finds out that C is durable because it doesn't have to be rewritten all the time and we all go C. The bad apples will fall down soon enough with learning a programming language that actually requires some attention span.34 -
So, this morning was crazy.
I had the Service Desk, first ticket of the day: A notification for Updates in Windows 10 from a concerned co-worker who hasn't seen this.
We distribute our updates with a WSUS and install them automatically and haven't approved any of the creators and fall creators updates.
After checking I saws that the client had the Creators Update already installed!
This means, this Client ignored our WSUS Updates and installed direct from Microsoft!
MICROSOFT YOU MAKE ME MAD!!! -
So there was a time when I "knew" PHP but I've never been able to use it, correctly or not. I knew I had to know a framework to get more accepted in the work market place, so I went on Codecademy, and started to learn a shit ton of stuff that I knew but I now master way more than before. Until I fall on a Ruby on Rails tutorial. Then another. Then a login / register system.
Dude. It was so simple. I had the feeling that my magic wand found me, and that I was developing just by speaking English (well it was the basics)
Today RoR is still my favourite framework, I just wish I could be paid to work with it 😍 -
This is a place for ranting, right? It's "Dev"-"Rant", right?
So, why so much hate when people do actually rant?
Kinda defeats the purpose, doesn't it? Or maybe the name is just misleading...
Or maybe y'all just gate-keeping ranting - which is... ya, okay - you do you, you preppy tosser.
Anyway, on that note:
I fucking hate web-development.
I fucking hate CSS.
CSS isn't a tool, it's a curse.
It's like a soft black magic system:
This specific behavior can sometimes be created by combining these specific elements, but will fall apart if you're a gemini - unless you wore a colorful hat at your fifth birthday party. If you didn't have a party, it'll produce some random behavior of the deer-god's choosing.56 -
During my freshman fall semester in college in my intro to Java class, the professor gives us an assignment and says we need to submit it, so I print it out and try to submit the code on paper. Is it my fault he didn't specify how to turn it in?1

All the youtubers ranting about adpocalypse, watchtime and such for weeks now..
And tbh i didn't really care. But for fucks sake the AI youtube uses to recommend videos indeed sucks!
You know back in the days, when you listened/watched part 1 of a playthrough and were just fine with the upcoming video because it was part 2, 3, 4 and so on of the series?
FUCK THIS. How about now that you saw part 1 of Scykohs "Pokemon Snap Playthrough", watch some random fucking shit of jacksepticeye?
FUCK YOU. THENKS.
I used to fall asleep and wake up with some chill ass gameplays on my tv. But now I fall asleep with using my remote to direct myself to the next part of the video and wake up to some random ass content nobody wants to watch.
FRIGGIN FIRSTWORLDPROBLEM I KNOW BUT IT SUCKS.1 -
I live in a college, sort of..
2 hours ago, the power was lost unexpectedly for less than a minute and then came back. Internet didnt tho.
They dont handle their own infrastructure in this college thingy, they hired a school to do it (it sounds fucked up, and it is a little fucked up).
Now little me is becoming impatient and offers my help. Gets rejected.
Additionally, i just started to have a fair sleeping schedule, and noe because the internet isnt working im about to fall alseep before lunch again.. i hate the people responsible for IT here..3 -
This happened during the early months of WFH in the covid pandemic. I had a paired programming video interview and my interviewer had some strange behavior. IDK if he had a weird tick, but his head kept dropping to the side like he was falling asleep and he’d jerk back up again. His eyes weren’t drooping though. It kept happening throughout the interview and I was afraid he’d fall out of his chair. I wondered if he was crashing from an all nighter or his body was shutting down in some way. It was jarring enough that I wondered if I should ask the recruiter to check on my interviewer.1

The Rise and Fall of Helper Classes
New method doesn't seem to fit into one of the existing classes so a developer creates a new class and innocently called it "helper".
Another dev had a similar conundrum and adds a couple more methods to the "helper" class.
And a few more methods added...
A couple more methods surely wouldn't be too bad. It has unit tests anyway.
After a year, the helper class has now grown to about 10,000 lines that no one is brave enough to refactor.
CTO now says, "Ok let's park this project and build a new one in Go." Fun times!2 -
While trying to fall asleep, I came to the conclusion that a solution to privacy would be an encrypted p2p messenger. You'd need a dns-like system that can tell the peers how to contact their communication partners. Then I searched for one, and there was a good looking one, but it wasn't open source. looks secure otherwise, but perfection looks different.
Can anyone recommend something similar to kripter/tell me why it would be secure/insecure to use their service instead of, say, signal? Not that I truly NEED this, but I at least want to try it :)5 -
So apple event today was 2 hours long to say....

Is there any incident, which made you fall in love with programming but as well as made hate at the same time?
Mine was, when I implemented an algorithm without any prior knowledge and it worked somehow for majority test cases(which made me fall in love), but after test case changed the algorithm failed(Which made me hate myself)...2 -
Android Studio upgrade
Over the weekend I upgraded my android studio and the project files of my current project and all went smoothly (as far as I thought).
I did not touch the project till today as was implementing some few features only for some few unexpected bugs to creap in.Been implementing that feature for some time and thought would be done in a flash only to my disappointment.
Turns after upgrading my SDK they were some conflicting dependencies that had no idea of.
To make it worse my fall to branch was way behind the active one and had to create a new project from scratch and copy paste files.
All this after spending hours in Stack
Overflow and scratching my head.
Lesson learnt to commit more frequently.1 -
i fall in love with every software that have a purpose but an ugly UI and do the job well, devrant for example, how about you ?22

I'm between Node js and (yes) blockchain. Node has amazing possibilities, and well distributed could end with the crappy servers era. Even my crappy server could fall to node in some weeks.
Blockchain is the best chance I see to take control over a market full of companies stuck in the middle's XXth century business model, and has a lot more to provide -
A typical (Covid) day (for me) being self employed. I tend to start working at around 8am, only break to make coffee, and by 3:30 in the afternoon I fall asleep til 5pm. Then I get some food, play my bass, mess around in garage band, drink a bottle of wine, watch some crap movie, go to bed around 1:00am rinse and repeat. I never work weekends anymore. Interested to know your Covid day,.5

Windows 10 Fall Creator Update (1709) is not supporting Samsung SSD 960 Pro M.2 right now.
Always when I try to update it, I get at the start a blue screen with Boot Device not detected. (Error 0xc00000bb)
Thought ok, let's try the update assistens - Nope
Tried to only boot on my M.2 - Nope NOPE
Tried to install upgrade it over a direct Image - Fuck you MoBo, ain't gonna work.
Googled around and everybody with a Samsung 960 Pro have this problem with the update 1709.
Who dafuq test this things at Microsoft? They are forgetting over the bit more expensive customers with a higher end Rigs.
FUCK YOU MICROSOFT AND WINDOWS TOGETHER. Im gonna bury you under water with in a fucking bolder.7 -

Stupid Windows Update back at it again with the Fall Creator's Update. More like Fail Creator's Update. My poor laptop took it too hard and the built-in mobile hotspot feature is currently bugged and not working, with the ICS service in task manager stuck at 100% you usage. Restore to previous version or not to restore to previous version? That my friends is the question. *picks up Ubuntu 17.10 live disk*2

Can't decide whether I like React or not. Hated it in the beginning, then sort of started liking it and even thinking it was great just to fall back to the dislike stage again where I roll my eyes and think it's a messy, crowded pile of shit that breaks with all sorts of good software principles. This has fluctuated up and down for over 3 years.
It's the only language/technology/framework I have had this experience with. Weird.8 -
Don’t fall for the “language A is better than language B” -it’s all just syntax (within the same paradigm). Learn higher concepts such as: data structures, abstraction, loops, variables, conditionals, functions.
Only then can you decide that your favourite language is better than anyone else’s...5 -

Facebook clearly sucks at this.

So I decided to pick up go, I must say I am very impressed.
As a Java developer I have always felt a certain chaos in C development (no established infrastucture of project conventions) but I am starting to fall in love with Go.
Is there anyone out here who has professional (or advanced) experience with the language? I would love to learn more in-deth stuff like proper conventions and patterns.2 -

My personal highlight this year. We used an old backend technology, which required the use of the old Java Date classes, because changing the model was not possible any longer (end of life modelling tools). So we had to fall back to those kinds of hacks.4

That we all fail and for every time you think someone else is stupid or falls into mistakes, you will fall into your own mistakes and be stupid in front of someone else, no one is perfect, we are all humans and at the end our work is to tell machines what to do and if they do it wrong, it's because we told them to do it that way and we are wrong.

Has anyone else found that not all USB C inputs are the same? You can't just buy an cable and expect it to plug into any socket.
1. I replaced the cable for a power pack, but the new one didn't fit my OP6 socket well, no clicking and have to push it in very hard to get it to charge, and still eat to fall out
2. The pixel 2 cable fits it nicely and all cables are ready to plugin and work
3. I tried charging my new Pixel 4a with ur though but very hard to plug in. Had to install the charger and cable that came with.
4. Amazon Fire takes all of them nicely and send all the others can use the cable that came with it too8 -
Today gonna be one of those woozy days.
Could only fall asleep at like 3:30 or 4:00 in the morning. Had serious allergic reaction or itchy disease starting from two palms. No med at home. Could only scratch and endure. And the fucking itch was moving from one body part to another throughout the night.
Went to the morning appointment and now heading office. One cup of coffee and one can of energy drink in me. Might add more juice in me later at office.5 -

Is....this...the life thats awaiting me for the rest of my life if i dont earn millions asap? If so then i dont want it. I reject this type of life like satan rejects cross. I do not want to be a part of this clownery.
REALISTICALLY getting 2 hours per day of optimized time and energy to work on my project, is not enough. Even 8 hours a day is not enough. I need full time work on my project. Thats how valuable it is.
This job is draining me. I feel like i signed a contract with the devil to drain my soul. Fuck. Seems like all contracts we sign is the same shit as selling our soul for money? WTF think about this bullshit! Celebrities seem to be the smartest then. They sign contracts to perform satan rituals in exchange for MILLIONS of dollars while we sign a contract to work for satan and get paid $8.125 an hour like fucking losers.

Everytime I read a rant complaining about another human being, I wonder what would be the story of that person when faced that situation.
In my experience the root of most of evils is pride, we IT guys feel smart, or at least smarter than the rest, that put you in a throne, far away from the rest and incapable of experience sympathy; I honestly don't understand why, but sometimes I fall in the same game without noticing.
I consider most of problems have the same root and is something I am working on, it is hard, I mean, is a very old habit with a deep root in my soul, at the end, the real fight has been always against myself.
And believe me, work(any) gets better when you forget about all that self importance.3 -

If you don't stand for something you'll fall for anything.
No one said that standing for something can have u feeling so conflicted.
Currently 'striking' because I haven't been paid for the month of January. Haven't been to work and haven't done any work (except support requests from a client we work with)
I have recently been pretty adamant about my conditions at work but I do feel a little unreasonable as the reason they can't seem to pay me seems to be some issue with the bank. However on the other hand I do not appreciate that I have not been contacted or informed about how the situation is being dealt with since Monday.
Am I being unreasonable?? Or have I been in a bad situation for so long that it seems wrong to call it out??3 -
Good times: Migrating a Jenkins build pipeline patched together out of groovy, python, bash, awk, perl scripts and God knows what else since I have only scratched the surface so far, from Maven to Gradle while not breaking day-to-day builds, integrations and deployments of features, hotfixes and releases. I'm actually enjoying the challenge but it's taking forever due to several issues:
- Jenkins breaks/hangs randomly because it's Jenkins
- Gradle can't handle sets of version ranges but Maven can
- Maven can't handle Gradle style version ranges
- Gradle doesn't have a concept of parent poms, you need to write a plugin and apply stuff programmatically. But plug-ins being part of the buildscript{} don't fall under depency management rules
- Meme incompatibility issues of BSD vs GNU versions of CLI tools like sed, grep etc1 -
I recently performed a huge refactoring effort on a Java project converting both the persistence and utility layers to Kotlin. Gotta say, I think I'm starting to fall in love with programming again!
Putting aside how pretty it is now, I've reduced those two layers by over 2400 lines of code -

so every time i am happy, but like really happy and everything in the day goes very well, i am thankful for being alive and truly love life etc, at the end of that day or the next day something hits me and i fall into depression because i remember all the problems i was ignoring while being happy. this has actually happened a lot of times so every time i am really happy i automatically remember how is this temporary happiness gonna end, so i try hard not to be happy in order to avoid deeper depression later. and whats the point of living if ur not happy?4 -
I was aspired to be a graphic designer back then when I was in primary school, playing with all the fancy Photoshop filters. Then I got sick of static images, move on to Flash (just before it died violently). I self learn the ActionScript by myself and fall in love with programming. Not the usual language to begin with, but it kinda form my basis in OOP concept.
I still have that thick ActionScript 3.0 bible with me. Keeping it so I can always remember the first time I broke my geeky virginity. -
Googling "dependency injection"
Google breaks the fourth wall, and 3d moves inside while offering to chase the white rabbit.
I agree and walls fall completely down with appearing linux system terminal.
Did I take drugs? Nope.
Just Google Easter egg for HR purposes.

Hey Game developers,
I'm making a roulette game for a client. He wants that the motion of ball in wheel should look completely random but it should fall into desired number i.e. the outcome of roulette wheel should be predetermined, not random. Any idea how do I do that?8 -
Is quiting university because of obvious reasons to pursue a freelance web developer career a smart move?
I am just 21, sick of my teachers and environment and I feel that I would eventually fall into depression if I stay . I love to code, I dream code literally.
What are the long term consequences which I can't think of.
Devs please help me make a smart choice before I make biggest or smartest move of my life.
I am making just enough to sustain myself. Just Brought a MacBook air worth 1000k with little help from family.
Will not having a degree be an obstacle in my dev career.23 -
Was so worried with all the whining about the windows fall update thinking my pc sucks so it will break for sure. But seems I have had it for a week now and not noticed.1

I'm beating the never ending tasks one after another past few days. Proud of myself and at the same time a bit tired.
Main problem is focus.
I can easily lose my focus along the way and then live the unproductive days for up to a week or more. I'm afraid to fall into that sink hole. 😣
So when I gained my focus, I try my best not to lose it. Which makes me lose track of other shits. Some shits are major like relationship responsibility, social etiquette etc. Some shits are minor like food and water. Nevertheless it's not very physically healthy nor spiritually.
I don't know how to easily switch on and off my focus. 😞
Maybe I should meditate 🤔 I don't know.3 -
I don't get it how people fall for that AI robot Sophia.. anybody with the slightest idea of coding or updates with the adavancements in AI applications would know Sophia is too good to be true. How do people even fall for it...

CSS is truly full of surprises.
Let's say you have a simple HTML:
<div class="with-background">
<div class="content with-margin"></div>
</div>
Now, to ensure that margin of the internal element won't "fall out" of the background, you might add padding: 0.1px to the wrapper. But, here's a fun fact: adding 0.01px still works fine, but 0.001px does not.
For my browser the cut-off seems to be somewhere around .008333332371px4 -
My father is an electrical engineer and using computers from MainFrame times. So, duirng my childhood I always see computers arround me. This is the first reason I fall in love with computers and programing.
I think I am using a computer since 3rd grade. Or mightbe erlier. doesn't remamber.1 -
As we’re moving into summer, I can’t help but fall into that “shit I hate this” mentality again. I’m a naturally sweaty person, but even on the edges of summer I feel like my skin has a layer of moist just… sitting there. My sleep is shit, I’m irritated and I never know what to wear to feel comfortable. Just a full season of discomfort. Wish I could just WFH to create a somewhat comfortable environment in summer.15

Dealing with relationships when you are a night owl. I don't burn the midnight oil like in my twenties but I don't want to go to sleep at 1030pm. Midnight is typical but I feel my actions affect my missus as she can't sleep when I'm not there...that said..she has issues sleeping anyway or nodding off. Whereas I can fall asleep in front a TV that's on no problems or whenever my head hits a pillow. I sleep on the couch when I stay up so I don't disturb her. Or does everyone here have a cushy work life balance job where you only work 9 to 5 and don't need to be on the pc.
-
Haven't been able to sleep well for a while. Generally I've either had to take some sort of sleeping aid (usually benadryl, cause melatonin doesn't do anything to me), or stay awake for about 20+ hours. It's been like that for about 2 years now. Due to that, I've built up a resistance to benadryl.
Last night I took benadryl around 11, figuring I'd fall asleep around 12:30-1. I managed to fall asleep around midnight, and woke up at 1. I tried going back to sleep for hours, but nothing. Now 6 hours later, I don't know. Might end up just staying awake until tonight and passing the fuck out.
I wish I could fucking sleep.8 -
No-meds is a real privilege. Let me explain.
There are people who have to take a shit ton of medicines/pills to 'just' function normally.
Then there's people like me who don't need any of them, barely fall sick in a year and can ocassionally smoke weed just for enjoying life.
It's the only privilege I can get behind the idea of.4 -
So I've been doing GSoC this summer (sort of a paid project for an open source org.), and have not made it to any milestones whatsoever, even with 10-12 hour days and almost no days off. The other GSoCcers in my organization are just doing amazing, so I wonder wtf is wrong with me. I got past the midterm because my mentor is amazing, but wtf, I fucking exhausted of trying so hard just to fall on the "slightly below average" mark. I'm 21 and I feel too old to do anything great aleady!!
Now I have to quit whining and get back to work.1 -
why i am fall asleep in front of the monitor even i know to myself i'm motivated. hays, i do not trust my own motivation right now

I enjoy reading the arcane language of devs, although I haven't a fucking clue what you're talking about. It's the instinctive rise and fall of emotion that I find gripping.
There's one thing I may be better at than most of you; since 1967's first episode of "Time Tunnel," I have been enamoured of RMS Titanic. So, two things. Today is the birthday of Jack Phillips, the senior wireless operator who lost his life the night of the sinking. There's a memorial garden in his birthplace, Godalming, Surrey, UK. The second is my recent immersion in enhancing images. I'm attaching a work in progress of RMS Titanic sailing past the Isle of Wight on her maiden voyage. Stay dry lol.4 -
Genuine question:
I'm someone who's already been in the workforce for a year now while still being a student (which is pretty convenient as it pays for my school), and talking with a lot of my friends online or at school, most of them would love to have responsibilities, and I can't relate at all: for me, responsibilities are just a weight on my shoulders and a Damocles sword over the head, ready to fall when you fuck up. I don't want people to rely on me, not because I don't think I'm good enough, but because I don't want to be held responsible for anything at all. Just let me do my thing in my corner, thanks, I'm good.
I would love to hear insights about that topic!7 -
If I ever fall into a blackhole I dont think there's any "big and tall man" shop anywhere this side of the universe that sells clothes big enough to compensate for spaghettification.
There *might* be one on the *other* side though (assuming I make it through the blackhole first).
Their foot traffic must suck though.3 -
Well, for me being a dev or at least a hobby-dev is like reading and writing a book. Each like of code holds a thought as each sentence holds a story. The more you write, the better is the result. It's the feeling that you can do art in multiple ways.
Once you start, you fall down a deep and unknown rabbit hole, yet it's a slow fall, with a lot of obstacles in the way. You'll get bruises. Break something even. In the end you'll die. That doesn't matter though, because what's left after you is the path you chose and it's open for anyone who dares to follow you.
It's like magic. -
When u shit do u put toilet paper on the water in the middle? I do it my whole life. If i dont put it then the shit splashes and water comes straight into my asshole (inside literally) and makes my rectum wet. Thats why putting toilet paper slows down the inertia of shit fall according to the laws of physics i studied in college. Never thought learning something in school was gonna be useful but only for shitting big shits. No wonder why degree is worth less than a shit and no one cares about it8

I was a bootcamper. I’m on my first job now (I’m still currently at the same place after a year and a half). Doing web development (all JS/TS) with node, react and angular. I started it out working with another guy and now I’m alone. I’ve made more progress being alone since I’ve had to take on stuff my colleague was doing. But with being alone comes more pressure as it’s all on me and when shit hits the fan I don’t really have anybody I can fall back on. Also I feel like I’m missing out on team dynamics and learning from other people I could be working with. In any case I’m learning a lot, I’m meeting the deadlines and getting the job done. It’s a good first experience.2

Happened many times I even started changing my screen touching habits in order not to fall into this pit but still sometimes it happens and arrrgh.
I like sorting by algo and rarely use recent. I’m on ios so I’m not sure if it also happens on android but damn so annoying.3 -
I wonder if anyone else realizes how stupid it is to loop years around for fear of arbitrary artifical consequences designed to just keep people as land bound surfs.
seriously.
everyone travels
everyone fucks
or wants to.
and people fall down sometimes
doesn't mean you have to invent a system that drags them back through years of history to get that 60k job all over again !!!
also next year means take the calendar year and add one assholes !8 -

Ionic-capacitor is just a plugin paywall
They want you to get stuck when using capacitor plugins, they've eliminated the configurations for these plugins so you get stuck and pay for their shitty closed-source plugins.
Don't fall into this trap, don't ever use Ionic capacitor, stick to react-native or even flutter.
If you are going web, then Ionic is great3 -
Tristan Harris: The manipulative tricks tech companies use to capture your attention

Or is it that I actually rarely leave the tech sphere? -
Does anyone here have experience with LINQ? I was hoping that anyone with some experience with it might be willing to share some opinions or insights about it. Like:
- Do you like LINQ?
- Does LINQ have shortcomings or easy pits to fall into when using it? (especially as a beginner)
- Do you use something besides LINQ? If so, why?
Sorry for bothering anyone on here with this, I'm just curious about the tech as I'm trying to learn C# and I'm not sure S.O. would appreciate opinion based questions.3 -
I'm currently writing a discord bot using the discord.py library and I cannot decide how to structure my code.
I was thinking of writing it in modules, with a core script that would load any valid module class that would include an array of all the event hooks it wanted, whether it wanted to send messages and so on.
It's a nice way to practice python after my last working bot that I wrote in (Sit down for this) PHP using an outdated and abandoned wrapper (Yeah, event-based programming in PHP, I know)
Are there any better ways to do this? I really don't want to hardcode all the functions in, only to have it fall apart later after adding another feature...1 -
As soon as we got into the actual coding part of my first college programming class, I loved it. The next semester, I took two more programming classes and an introductory web development class, and about halfway through that semester, I knew this was what I wanted to do for a living. 2 1/2 years later, I've worked as web developer, both for a small company and a freelancer, I have a web development internship lined up for this fall that I'm excited about, I've written a few smaller programs in a couple languages just for fun, and I wouldn't want to do anything else at this point.

So what are everyone's predictions for Bitcoin on the 31st. Rise or fall? Maybe a bit of both? Recovery times? Impact on other cryptocurrencies?
I'm expecting to see some short lived, possibly huge drops, across the board, followed by it shooting back up within a week. Interesting time though.
Hope you're all are able to cash in, if there's anything to cash in on.
Good luck!2 -
Anyone tried those youtube subliminal sounds videos to achieve wealth/love/or whatever? Or any kind of hypnosis videos that put you in trance that changes your subconscious to make you think differently and according to those goals you want to achieve?
Im about to listen to hypnosis of falling out of love/getting detached from the person i love. hoping it will help me cut out all the bullshit and uncertainty i get from her so i can focus on training self improvement and work
So far i found this one https://youtu.be/OJHtMLGWq6o
Anyone tried this one? Or knows a better one that you tried and it worked? Send link
I'll listen to this one every single night and fall asleep with it and see what happens13 -

rantHeader = "Merry Christmas to me!"
subHeader = "How a phone survied a three stories fall but dropping it from 1 meter high shattered its glass"
And it's Christmas with my direct manager on holiday till Februrary the 33th 2085 meaning I will get a new phone in 1/2 years if all goes well...
Well at least I have a good excuse not to connect to work during my holidays as MFA app is on this phone...2 -
Back to work from a week on holiday. Find out that both mine and my girlfriends companies have announced redundancies on the same day (completely unrelated companies in different fields). We've both made it through the first round ok (which is more than some so massively grateful) but we are still at risk of loosing our jobs. We have some savings to fall back on but that will only cover rent for so long. Never underestimate how quickly things can go to shit.

Finally got around to creating repos for 4-5 projects that have been in various stages of development over the last quarter.
No longer have the intermediary stuff to fall back on, but thankfully they’re all in an operable state! -
Started my design/development agency in Jan. I work both direct to client and also on a whitelabel basis for other agencies and developers.
My 2nd biggest client is one of the said whitelabel clients. Unfortunately he has been unwell for a few weeks and is now taking another 3 weeks off. This week I have had to take over the running of his business (from a client and development standpoint) to ensure projects don't fall behind...they're already 2 weeks overdue with new RFQs coming in thick and fast. All this whilst running my own business.
Yesterday was a 16hr day and it doesn't look like it is going to let up :|
At least it's billable I guess?1 -
Thinking to start smoking 🚬
Never tried it once in 26 years not even a sip even refused temptations from school friends
Now by starting a job, i have no security, ironically. I feel like i stepped at the leap of a bottomless pit and tomorrow i jump into it and fall... and fall....and fall..... No end.
I have no idea how to use ansible and rexify.org and thats what I'll need to use. I have no idea how to do devops with Azure, and thats what ill do. I only build devops with terraform on Aws.
The unknown of 9-5 is frightening me more than starting a business. Paradoxically, i think it would come as a relief to get fired within the first week from failing to complete literally everything
On top of that my blonde gf disappeared yesterday for 3-4 hours. No texts no phone calls. Called for 2 times no answer. Called 3rd time and got a voice message the phone was shut down. 3-4 hours later she said she was with mom at shopping and didnt have internet
I also caught her texting some random guy on instagram. They both have vanish mode enabled (texts delete themselves as soon as you leave the conversation). Confronted her today. She wont tell me the truth. Likes his pics on ig. Keeps lying. On a question "why do you have vanish mode enabled with him?" her answer is "well i guess married men always use vanish mode"
Im tired
Too much shit unraveling. The opening of 2024 already doesnt look good
Why do good people die in accidents or diseases but i dont and i live? Shits unfair. Why doesnt nature/God fucking kill me? I beg to die. I hope to die. I pray for something to kill me. It would come as such a relief.
This life is meaningless and empty to me. typeof(life) yields a void. I dont value it. Its shit. Whether succeed or fail its meaningless. Nihilism was right
I am literally a walking dead. Physically moving but spiritually dead. Mentally lost. I am the captain of a ship in the middle of the ocean who no longer knows where the ship is going
Why cant i just get cancer or something. Can cigarettes help me get it? Cause I'll start consuming that shit right away to speedrun that process
End it17 -
my sleep schedule is spectacularly fucked. i go home from school, fall asleep, wake up at 1 AM to try and work on my various web app projects, stay up until time for school the next day. this fucked up schedule has decreased my productivity a lot and i have done nothing to fix it. i feel like in the future when being productive actually matters this will be a huge set back for me. any idea how i can fix this?2

I'd have been motivated to work this whole time if they'd just left their filthy hands off what is important to me. As it was originally worked during the whole time period. Kind of says something really. And their idea of a smart way to proceed was to make everything dirtier and grosser everywhere and more miserable looking, how nice. Course even if I hadn't had a happy fall recently on my knee, I'd still be more tired than I used to be for certain.
Speaking of which.
A few times that didnt happen because someone interceded.
I mean :P
honestly truly that didn't happen in the first place.
it was however your job to transport prisoners at one point. so they just tried to reverse things it seems to the benefit of some kiddy raping monkey. -
