How to properly have fun on a Saturday night:
1. Suddenly become deeply unsatisfied with current linux distro
2. Evaluate alternatives
3. Decide some change is needed but not too much: install fresh version of old distro
4. Once again, experience profound dissatisfaction
5. Opt for radical change
6. Erase all linux partitions, form a super partition and install a new linux distro on it
7. Spend hours familiarising with the new distro
8. Spend more hours googling stuff and typing commands in the terminal
9. Download current devRant avatar, send it to the PC via Telegram and set it as user's avatar for the welcome screen
10. Feel deeply satisfied
11. Accidentally wake girlfriend up while trying to get to bed. Get told off for staying up until 4am and for "being such a nerd"21 -
Introducing new Notif filters! Now on mobile, all your notifications are broken up into category tabs and you can clear each category separately. No more digging for mentions!
Also we just released a new image preview for when a rant is shared on FB, Twitter, etc. which includes the ranter's avatar image. You can see it by sharing a rant on social media, or check out an example here: devrant.com/rants/1036286/image.png (if you change the rant ID, you can see others)45 -

Demoing a new feature in the Dev environment.
Me: The images are just placeholders. The communications team are still coming up with appropriate images.
Management: Can we change that image? It doesn't really fit the theme of what we are trying to achieve.

Management: That image also doesn't really fit with the theme. Can we change that one too?

Client: It's not working!!

Client: "Database connection error"

DB Admin: Yeah we had to change the SQL logins, I've sent you the new ones
*Phones junior dev in charge of dB programming*
Junior Dev: Yeah you'll just have to go and change the credentials. They're in all the places where we're using the dB, just before the statement, in the connection strings...
We make over 470 calls to the DB 😑16 -
My biggest tip to new developers? Embrace your ignorance, don't be embarrassed by it. Let it inspire you to learn as much as you can, let it humble you into asking questions when you're stuck, let it prepare you to change within an industry that is anything but static. Admitting you don't know something isn't a weakness, it's an opportunity 😃6

I HATE when a request for a change or a new feature comes like a bug feedback, as if it's your fault
"I clicked this, but this behavior that we didn't agree on didn't happen!! Fix it!"

I looked into the code of the website of our company. One of the first things I found was that the Login was hardcoded with clear passwords. So everytime a new user needs an account the code has to change.
I still can't understand how people can do that.5 -
If you discount all the usual sql injections the most blatant was not our but a system one customer switched to after complaining over cost.
The new system was a bit more bare bones featurewize but the real gem was the profile page for their customers.
The only security was an id param pointing to the users primary key, which was an auto incrementing integer :)
And not only could you access all customer data but you could change it to.
But since the new system was built by their it chief’s son we realized it was not much we could do.2 -
I need a new 'main' language to do all my projects in as java is kind of grinding away at my psyche.
Golang I liked quite a lot when I used it for my job a year ago, I'll give that a try..
Golang installed and up and working fine.
Oh, I know lets see if there are GLFW bindings for golang. And sure there are lets go!
Oh I need gcc and mingwex + mingw32 which I will acquire through cygwin.
hmm.. mingwex + mingw32 not found and my drive is almost full. I'll reinstall on my D:\ drive before continuing troubleshooting.
> Delete C:\Cygwin Access denied.
> cmd rmdir c:\test /s /q Access denied.
> Change permissions Access denied.
No problem I just don't own this object!
> Change to be the 'object owner' Success!
> Change permissions Success!
> Delete C:\Cygwin Access denied.
> cmd rmdir c:\test /s /q Access denied.
> takeown /F C:\Cygwin /A /R /D Y Success!
> cmd rmdir c:\test /s /q Access denied.
At this point it would be more efficient to manually open up my ssd, and using a fridge magnet change every single bit to be exactly what I want it to be.
Or install linux.7 -
I live in the USA. Recently moved to a new state. Contacted car insurance company to change my policy to the new state.
Upon doing so, I was told about a new program they have where you install an app on your phone that monitors your driving. It gives discounts to your premium for driving safely.
Intrigued, I decided to try it out. At the end of the month, my discount was TWO DOLLARS.
Uninstalled, not worth the surrender of personal information that they profit off of in addition to my premium payments as well as the drained battery every day.
Disillusioned, again.
Has anyone else had experiences with similar discount programs, and was it worth it for you? Maybe I’m just a shitty driver ;).17 -
THis one goes out to the fucktards that decide to fucking change things on api systems to meet new business requirements and fail to fucking scope out the change requirements of dependent systems that YOU are FUCKING UPDATING via THIS FUCKINg API!
You fucking morons!
At least have the fucking decency or balls to walk 10 fucking metres from your stupid ass chair or send a fucking email about the changes rather then me finding out you fucktards change things through an end customer who want to know where there order is!!! FUCK!1 -
FML, I hate projects where managers (and other developers, too!) irrationally think that the only thing to do in the codebase is delivering new features and fulfilling change requests.
After 5 years of such approach, the code is bloated, and has hack-on-hack done against the original architecture, and management complains on the time to delivery a change, however asking them to get some time to "refactor" meets a deny every single fucking time because "we don't have budget".
Decided to leave the team. Any reason to stay there longer?7 -
If you're using snapchat you might want to go on it immediately and change your privacy settings.
New update came out, they added a map with everybody's locations down to a couple of meters in accuracy... And the feature is on by default for EVERYONE to see, not just your friends.
What the actual fuck were they thinking?? Just think of all the ways this can go wrong.9 -
I think my server got hacked, yesterday I made a new server on scaleway for the sake of testing I made a user called dev, with password dev. Forgot to change password before I went to bed.

When you forget your password, go to change it and get greeted with:
"Your new password cannot be the same as your current password!"1 -
Thanks to mandatory password change, today:
- My windows account got locked because my phone kept logging into wifi using
old password.
- Google Hangouts were silently running in background with old session until I re-opened it. Work of others delayed by 4 hours due to missing message notifications.
- Docker for Windows lost credentials needed to use SMB mounts - 1h of debugging why my containers mount empty folders ( now I will know)
- Google G-Sync for Outlook asked for new password on outlook restart - few mails delayed.
All of that for sake of security that could be easily solved with 2FA instead, not faking that "I do not change number at the end of my password" -
I maintain a service that people are billed yearly for. A bunch of users just requested a new feature that will require me to build a completely new backend and change a bunch of things that will require a full rewrite of a couple different aspects of the service. I'm both excited and scared. Wish me luck.5

WTF chrome/google?! Fuck you & your new designs & features!!
Anyone else got forced new grouping for tabs after the update?! Hey, you can group tabs in.. I know, I just don't want to!! It's fugly and annoying and counterproductive..
It used to work to change flags to not have that 'feature' but I can no longer force the old layout for tabs even with flags.. :/ It's driving me nuts..25 -
I’m new to C# and Visual Studio gave me an option to change the way I wrote the main function.
It gave me this.
Does this remind you of fat arrow function in JavaScript?7 -
If you are teaching a newbie HTML and basic JS using ES6/ES2015 features, the "Hello World" app probably would be:
<!-- index.html -->
<html>
<body>
<div id='container'>
<h2> Enter a Name and Hit The Button</h2>
<input id='name'>
<button id='change-name'>Say Hello</button>
<h3 id='name-display'></h3>
</div>
<script type='module' src="./index.js"></script>
</body>
</html>
//index.js
import {sayHello} from './hello.js';
let displayArea = document.getElementById('name-display');
let input = document.getElementById('name');
let button = document.getElementById('change-name');
button.addEventListener('click', () => {
//displayArea.innerHTML = "Hello World"
displayArea.innerHTML = sayHello(input.value);
});
//hello.js
export const sayHello = (name='World') => {
return `Hello ${name}`;
};

Upper management finally caved in to the endless change requests from business and explicitly made the following statement:
"We won't overpromise and under-deliver. With that, we are reducing the committed scope of development work per sprint, but will continue to deliver the same final deliverables by the delivery dates"
So all our compressed project timetables just got uncompressed, and we finally have the breathing room we've been begging for since 2017. Any change requests from business will be (finally) backlogged.
On the other hand, the number of projects have increased to fill out the new extra dev time, but at least we're now less stressed at work. Priorities!1 -
I have a friend who likes to change his tech stack every time he reads about a new technology online.....He started working on a startup idea of his.....He started with Larvel.....then came NodeJS...Then came .Net Core......Then Go.....And yesterday he told me that he is thinking about making it in Vapour.
Him: how long do you think it will take me
Me: ........Forever4 -
I think this is both a blessing and a curse for me.
Whenever I'm developing something, I ALWAYS keep coming up with new (good) feature ideas WHILE programming. Now, this isn't as bad because they enrich the software/service mostly but goddamn, it's so fucking annoying when I'm working on a certain function/feature and I change stuff three motherfucking trillion times before finishing it because I keep coming up with fifteen billion new ideas.
In the end it's all worth it but at some moments it gets really fucking annoying.9 -
At my first job, our employee email addresses followed a somewhat unusual naming convention: last name plus first initial, e.g. smithj@company.com for John Smith.
They were ultimately forced to change it, though, when they received a complaint from a new employee. His name? Tommy Shi...6 -
When I arrived at my new job last year they were working on developing a large site using a live server with all the devs ftp-ing every change in the build process to test it. 😵
It was not uncommon to hear 'is anybody in the style sheet?' being shouted across the office!
Needless to say, I had to fix many bugs multiple times when my fixes were overwritten!7 -
The ability to understand every codebase immediately to the point where I:
* don't need to rely on the documentation
* know exactly where bugs are
* know how a change (bug fix, new feature, etc.) affects other areas of the project recursively
Obviously because it's a waste of time hunting that occur when modifying a codebase, no matter how carefully one writes tests or tests their code, something could always sneak in because it's not always apparent how a change ripples through your codebase.
It's tiresome and especially annoying when working with core modules1 -
A few years ago I was working in a startup where the designer was given way too much decisional power (he was friends with the owner).
He had a tendency to keep editing parts of the design during the development phases, so when we had to work on a new big section of the application, before starting the tront-end development, I asked him to confirm that the mockups were final.
He confirmed the design was final and was not going to change.
10 days later, of couse, he sent a new, completely different, set of mockups. The startup owner expected the new design to be implemented without moving the deadline.
(I left that startup shortly after. The issues with the designer were just the tip of the iceberg.
The owner tried to keep a payment hostage to "force" me to sign a new 1 year contract. He backtracked when he thought I was recording the call. I got my payment and left.)1 -
Never get too comfortable with a language or technology. By the time you master it, it'll probably change. Be adaptable and always be willing to learn new things.
-
There was a bug in "Change email" module. When the functionality is called, it sends 2 emails:
1. to a current email w/ a link to 'reject email change'
2. to a new email w/ a link to 'confirm email change'
The flaw was in how these links worked (the clockwork behind them). If one link is clicked, another one is NOT deactivated in the bkend :)
Now the task for you is to figure out why this is wrong :)4 -

Received a complaint that the year dropdown list isn't far enough (ends at 2022). They wanted it to go all the way to 2027. My script handles this by getting the current year then add 5 to it and it generates the values in the dropdown list. All I had to do was change from '5' to '10' in the config puppet files. Contractually, any source code changes needs to be documented and informed to the client. I followed suit, documenting how I am going to make the change. This is new as it involves using git to commit the changes and pull it in the server that talks to the git server. This shouldn't take more than a minute to fix.
Submitted and wanted to finish this today. Client decided to wait til next week to complete the code change to fix the complaint. A work that can be done in a minute is now dragged to a week. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU -

Do not change username in win10.
Messes up ownership.
Ex) You have set your username as Loren. Used computer for a while. Installed bunch of programs.
Then you change your u.c to Ipsum. Some installed programs adapt to new u.c. others dont. New programs set the installation folder to either c://Loren or c://Ipsum making chaos.
Then the computer gets messed up.

During our last Sprint Planning we have chosen to use internal codename Solid Snake for this period (yes, we change it every sprint).
Our Tech Lead likes to draw current name (adjective and animal name) on a whiteboard. As soon as new name has been voted down he refused to draw a new one because
Drum rolls
He doesn't like Metal Gear series.
I'm not sure I want to work in this company anymore...5 -
Had to change password on computer for administrative reasons (sysadmins and infosec make us change our pass every quarter). Changes didn't sync to everything so now I can't even log into my computer.
Need to go to the office tomorrow so some guy can type in an admin password on my pc and do stuff to it. If that doesn't work I will just be given a new laptop.
Seriously fuck this week4 -
Changed my Apple ID (email address), couldn't logout from Macbook (access data invalid), had to change it back just to logout and change it back to login with the new one :/4

Working with a new team and I don't understand how this is normal or ok.
Me: Does anyone need help troubleshooting the broken build or can I revert this change that broke it so I can push my change out?
Dev: Stop build shaming me, I wouldn't leave the build in a failing state.
Me: Well, I wasn't sure how long to wait, before asking.... it's been broken for 4 hours.
Dev: It's the development environment, you should expect development to be going on.
Me: Yes and appears that this project architecture doesn't support any sort of isolation for development. So nobody can deploy anything except through the development branch.
Dev: That's what development is for IMO, so it doesn't bother me.11 -
Other staff: I’m having trouble logging in to website A. My password doesn’t work.
[Me thinking: That’s weird. When I set up your account, the password worked. I told you to change it. So maybe you forgot your new password. We haven’t changed anything to about the login process.]
Me: I reset your password. [sends new password]
Other Staff: The new password doesn’t work. But I can log in with Google.
Me: 😶 Website A does not have sign in with Google. What website are you actually on???10 -
Just needing somewhere to let some steam off
Tl;dr: perfectly fine commandline system is replaced by bad ui system because it has a ui.
For a while now we have had a development k8s cluster for the dev team. Using helm as composing framework everything worked perfectly via the console. Being able to quickly test new code to existing apps, and even deploy new (and even third party apps) on a simar-to-production system was a breeze.
Introducing Rancher
We are now required to commit every helm configuration change to a git repository and merge to master (master is used on dev and prod) before even being able to test the the configuration change, as the package is not created until after the merge is completed.
Rolling out new tags now also requires a VCS change as you have to point to the docker image version within a file.
As we now have this awesome new system, the ops didn't see a reason to give us access to kubectl. So the dev team is stuck with a ui, but this should give the dev team more flexibility and independence, and more people from the team can roll releases.
Back to reality: since the new system we have hogged more time from ops than we have done in a while, everyone needs to learn a new unintuitive tool, and the funny thing, only a few people can actually accept VCS changes as it impacts dev and prod. So the entire reason this was done, so it is reachable to more people, is out the window.3 -
JavaScript templating libraries are such a joke.
Either they:
- Totally change the syntax of HTML (Which? would make them? Not a templating engine? But their own shitty markup language?)
- Are already deprecated (And the new version isn't done yet!)
- Both7 -
My Lenovo X1 Carbon 4th gen came with Windows pre-installed with a ton of bloatware. Reinstalled Windows just to clean all the crap off to learn that the SSD had an MBR partition table. Wiped the entire drive to change to GPT, then reinstalled Windows again and (of course) added linux. Gotta love how companies put random bloatware and crusty partition tables on brand new technology. It's ok, laptop. You're in good hands now.1

Learn nodejs, love it, abandon it coz most jobs in the country want php and none heard about the new js frameworks.

Team outing.
Planned to send out a code review before the trip. Everything was ready.
Then, someone pushed new changes, and I got damn stuck in fixing the UTs.
Currently, ranting from the resort, missing the commit that wouldn't reach a code review.
I expected to finish this task in 1 hour. Well, I should never ever estimate things.
Note: Played a grand piano though.. yeahhhhh.. -
Those times when you feel that being a competent, reliable, hard-working developer just isn't good enough. When you feel you can't keep up with the pace of change in your sector and you're being left behind in terms of knowledge and understanding of all the new tools and frameworks and patterns and approaches. You're convinced you're soon going to lose your ability to contribute or architect anything new in your current role.8

Skype password lost -> reset email -> new password given -> login failed on skype client -> login via website -> invalid password -> reset password -> first enter code by email -> done -> assign new password -> login via password -> someone else is using your account, you have to change the password -> first ensure you are you by enter a code -> code entered -> change password -> password changed -> finally login works
Way to go Microsoft!
so I just changed my password 3 times in the last 5 minutes to get access to skype... for a call we finally made via whatsapp... now I will remove skype again until next year, when I have to make that famous "once a year" call with skype3 -
So we have this really annoying bug in our system that customers keep complaining about. I've explained in detail, multiple times, why the part they think is a bug is not a bug and the workaround they keep asking me to apply doesn't make sense, won't fix the issue, and won't even stick (the system will notice that the record they want me to delete has been removed and it will repopulate itself, by design).
I've told them what we need to do as an actual workaround (change a field on the record) and what we need to do to properly fix the bug (change the default value on the record and give proper controls to change this value through the UI). We've had this conversation at least three times now over a period of several months. There is a user story in the backlog to apply the actual fix, but it just keeps getting deprioritized because these people don't care about bug fixes, only new features, new projects, new new new, shiny shiny new.
Today another developer received yet another report of this bug, and offered the suggested workaround of deleting the record. The nontechnical manager pings everyone to let them know that the correct workaround is to delete the record and to thank the other developer for his amazing detective work. I ping the developer in a private channel to let him know why this workaround doesn't work, and he brushes it off, saying that it's not an issue in this case because nobody will ever try to access the record (which is what would trigger it being regenerated).
A couple hours later, we get a report from support that one of the deleted records has been regenerated, and people are complaining about it.

Very conflicted about ProductHunt.
On one hand, love seeing all the new little productivity tools and SaaS tools with really nice UI. Fairly inspiring.
On the other hand, sometimes they can be complete cringe over there. It almost seems like a cult sometimes and they are way too enthusiastic about even the most boring things
ProductHunt: "This new productivity tool 🚀 will absolutely 🎉 change your life 😛. it is DISRUPTING 💪🏼 team management."1 -

When the CIO referred to our entire backend system as a "heritage" codebase in a press interview.
Cue every backend developer scrambling to change projects, every manager scrambling to reassure the backend developers, and HR scrambling to hire new backend developers. -
Copy and paste similar code where I have to change X values but ALWAYS mange to only change X-1 values so i get weird behaviour start debugging what in the end then takes longer than to write it new in the first place. Hate myself for that.

Great news, I just lost my email account's password. The password is in password manager but apparently, when I was changing it, I did something wrong. Now, neither the old one, nor the new one work and I can't login into my email. I didn't even change the password reset phone number to my new one! And I also forgot the recovery mailbox' password. Fucking great.
Here's the lesson: **ALWAYS** re-check your new password in your browser's private window. -

wonder if i might get fired... even though i m right...
And so much for my plan to update docs... I've forgot what I wanted to do...2 -
So Google apparently removed the most important Chrome feature:
"Toolbar auto-hide in fullscreen"
This change came with the new UI recently and there are no #flags around to fix it
Previously the chrome browser was easy to use as a multi-tasking machine, but now it feels really dumb.
This resulted in a loss of 15% of screen-real estate.
Please give me back my choice4 -

Apple(safari 10.3 update): Fuck you.
Basically the change log was:
*fixed critical security bug.
*added more bugs to fix later.
Well fuck you too safari... You disgust me.
The least the fucking imbeciles, or monkeys, behind safari can do is add a fucking css prefix. For fucks sake. -
Been working on a back-end server for one of my apps. Then I discovered Firebase. The way I code apps will change forever now. I've deleted all my back-end code and migrated to Firebase.

Please tell me why my boss thinks instead of just implimenting a language picker, it's a good idea to:
1) store the browser's language option in the DB only for new users, but only the first time they log in, never again.
2) never give existing users the ability to change language, and just default them to English.
3) deal with all upcoming language change tickets by having devs manually do DB updates ON THE LIVE PROD DB.
I'm screaming.2 -
New CTO.
New CTO pushes policy change to all browsers to open Facebook Workplace on every new tab and as start page.
Locks option to change it.
This also kills restoring tabs from past session.
New CTO handles the complaints
'It's fine to complain, we don't even have to agree. If this is important to you, then come up with a suggestion on how to solve this for all our employees. Business equirement is that one page is shown at startup, that's it. This has nothing to do with Workplace.'14 -
You're asked if you know how to use git, you say you can but you can't.
You decide to change your entire codebase because you realized your previous approach was a bad idea.
You ask how to change the old repository-content for the new project, you receive answer but you can't get it to work, you don't ask again for help.
What's the logical consequence? Create a public GitHub-Project and dump the entire customer-project under NDA into it -.-* -
We have so much pl/sql at our company and it really sucks because the "young" generation of devs must convince the pl/sql guys to switch to some more powerful and newer languages like java.
But not everyone wants to use the new stuff or learn anything new. I mean there are some programmers who really appreciate that there is new stuff. They have no problem learning from the younger generation. But some of them just resist any change in that direction, and thats the much higher amount of devs.
Does anyone of you have such experience? What can i do against that?
Is that some kind of "i am too old for this"-trip?13 -

I hate the Android update policy as hell. Why do they have to publish a new version each year? Why not a LTS version which is supported for 5 years? Barely no manufacturer is able to change their own interface aiming to adept it to the new Android version. Windows isn't publishing a new os every year. They just update it regularly to implement new functions. Ubuntu is doing the same.
WHY THE FUCK NOT ANDROID?
My HTC A9 was the first with Android 6. I didn't get Android 7 until now?! I paid a lot of money for this peace of shit! And I was granted an update for Android 7. So where is it HTC? Where?!?!?!?!?!?!6 -

We got new workstations today and the following happened:
Me: We got your new workstation but your screen doesn't have the right input to use it, so we'll exchange it too.
Her: No! I love that monitor!
Me: Well you won't be able to use the computer if you don't wanna change it.
Her: There has to be a different way!
Me: Okay I'm going to get some adapters and we'll try again.
After literally 30 minutes of searching I finally made it work.
VGA->DVI->HDMI->DisplayPort
That just felt so wrong.
Me: So it works now
Her: Thanks but why does it look so bad?
Me: It's because of the old monitor.
Her: Oh... *10 seconds silence* Then I'll get a new one.2 -
At the company I work they just updated confluence to a version with new UI. The new blue tone for the navbar is just FUCKING UGLY!

I finally get the go ahead to push an update to a client site into production. Client then sends out marketing email about changes later that afternoon. Motherfucker, do you even review your own code, never mind getting anyone else to do it?
"Hi" randomly added on a new line in the middle of a switch block, a syntax error, as the only change in a file?
Breaking two methods by misunderstanding which database object a variable identifies- but making no other change to those functions? And not adding permissions checks to the new API methods you added in that file?
Overwriting the email template that goes out to users who were added straight to the CRM, by reusing the same file for a template for users that have been invited to an event?
Adding your new fields to the old CRM sync code, again leaving me to figure it out, thereby leaving users' changes likely to be overwritten every morning?
And pushing this to master, supposedly tested, without a heads-up?

So I sign a contract for a new app with a client and in the contract we mentioned that a down payment should be payed upon signature. Then when we signed they postponed the payments for 4 days then after 4 days for another 4 days which is next week.

I wish i can only work on my apps.10 -

Amazing project I love working for and we're are the cusp of pushing out a big new update.

procrastinative coding is a bad habit of mine. I've been using php for 10+ years and just recently got into laravel. I have to say I love it but at times I wish I could have learned the entire framework before starting my project some time ago. as I am coding I learn new tricks with laravel on how to do things and have to waste time and go back and change existing code... or tell myself "I'll come back to this after the launch".
I'm just wondering how other people handle taking on new frameworks3 -

I'm a backend developer who for the last year has been helping the iOS-, Android and Frontend team with rewriting their shit.
Now I got yelled at for not making any new features on the backend, and we need to ship fast. So my manager dropped all further work on our backend, since it clearly needed a rewrite, since there have been no new features which to him indicates bad code that is hard to change.
Now all the developers are rewriting their applications to fit the new backend created by some new guy, which for some reason is stuck in creating a log-aggregator from scratch instead of the actual product. -

IPhone speech to text has come a long way. Definitely has improved. Real-time dictation rather than batching it.
I am currently doing approximately 50 percent of my rants by voice. In fact the rank you are reading I did by voice.
You can easily do punctuation such as a period, new paragraph, new line, caps and lower case. The speech recognition is excellent even with my New York accent and it learns the more you use it. Rarely does it get a word wrong.
Editing still has to be done manually and is a pain but that may change as dragon already allows you to do in-line editing. iOS speech to text has already surpassed dragon in some facets.
I do have to press the add new and post buttons at this Time to post my rants. But that may change as the enhanced dictation on the map allows you access to specific commands.
I will keep you informed of progress and I will be testing on android over the next few days as well.4 -
I've been feeling very bad because I don't think I've been making good use of my free time. So I decided to change.
Looked at my goals, first in line, getting a driver license.
For that, I need to arrange times for practice with my dad.
For that, I need a clean timetable. I had one but teachers are lame and don't respect the times of course.
So, I need to print the new one I already had done.
So I went to the printer.
And it prints awful, everything is pink because it doesn't print yellow.
Fine, let's change the cartridge.
Printer refuses to work, it throws a stuck paper error.
My dad tries to fix it putting fingers inside. Nothing.
We suspect it's the new cartridge, change the new cartridge chip with the one the old one had. Printer fooled.
It still doesn't work. Stuck paper.
My dad admits he felt he broke something when he reached inside the printer..
We had to disassemble it and fix the broken part.
Now it works again.
It still doesn't print yellow.
We'll have get it fixed or get a new one.
I guess I have to draw my timetable by hand...
Sucks, I made it using html and flex. Every 1fr was 5'.
I'll make a gist if anyone is curious about it.1 -
Question for those that worked alone with a project manager, and were you covered multiple parts, frontend, backend, mobile and you basically have good friendship with the project owner/manager but the job got bored or wanted to switch jobs because you wanted to change environment.
What was the period you informed your employer/project manager in advance about your resignation and leaving? 2 weeks, a month? more? And was it enough time for the manager to find replacement? Did you leave in good terms?3 -

My company is getting a new website. This involves getting new hosting.
I made the old one, and it's all just static html. I'm not that attached to it but it's an important detail.
The bosses want the switch to the new site to happen instantly, but I pointed out that with DNS propagation times etc it can't really happen that way.
So I suggested the new web guys host our old site for a few days and we change the DNS now. Then when they want to launch we don't have to wait for the DNS and they can just swap it out.
This involves dropping 10MB of html files into the web directory on the new server.
For this service they are charging us for 2 hours of their time!
I guess I'm in the wrong business... -

But then when you actually start working on it after discussing it, specification creation and preparations, with mind set and focused, he tells you:

New Year's day 10am I got a text message from the product owner.
To wish me a happy new year one would guess. But no! She was telling me that the cron job that I developed 2 years ago failed and I need to apply the change on the configuration manually.
What really irritated me was that was no matter of life and death, this could wait for us to get back at the office. Or even worse, she could have done the change herself, after all she was checking emails anyway.

It appears that since SDK 23 Google decided to move some libraries from tools to build-tools, but unity keeps trying to find that library in tools, obviously this error doesn't have any specific documentation and i spend around 5 hours downloading SDKs and trying to figure out what happen, till I found one tiny post in unity forum with only one answer.
I mean, on one side, this has changed since android 23 and the folks in unity can't change his fucking compiler yet, and on the other side, why the fuck Google change libraries from one place to another
Also, as a note to Google, your new system for SDK-only download its super shitty and full of problems, I don't know why you change it.1 -
you literally change about 80% of your business flow then demand new features/modules for literally at least once every 3 months, then you are angry why your 2 underpaid, overworked programmers can't catch up.

I use google auth for 2FA. Had to factory reset my phone for some reason. Meanwhile, github one day forced me to change my password. So I used the back up recovery code to change the password and then logged out. I was in a hurry and actually forgot to set up the new 2FA. But hey I have got the recovery codes right.
But, guess what? The recovery codes are not working anymore! Wtf github? -
One of my tasks for today was to change one (ONE! I REPEAT, ONE!!) field in over 2100 clients. SAP has a transation that changes anything you want in mass, all I had to do was select the clients I wanted to change and the new field value. This transation has been running since 2pm, it's almost 6pm and it's only halfway through.
Tomorrow is a national holiday and I wanted to focus on my personal project, but I bet I'll have to do this again tomorrow, because there's no way in hell I'm staying here for 4 more hours to get this done today, and 4/5 hours when I get home is not enough!
So yeah, fuck SAP for taking so long, and fuck whoever didn't notice sooner that we had to change this.4 -
I did an coding assignment for a new job... Now they are asking for more code to judge.
Cmon, just change your coding assignment to be enough to judge it...5 -

Everyone that says it sucks because there is a new framework everyday, dude, you know that just because there is a new framework it's not a must for you to change your stack to it right? Also, you can find very valuable frameworks with this diversity

I was working as a web developer from 2 year. That was so difficult.

Not web at all. I'm learning a new langage. And I love it.
Maybe software development it what I must do.

I have another issue 😬 with one of my Ubuntu laptops. The wifi chip somehow has connection issues. It nearly has no signal. I have to be beside the router to get a connection.
I changed the chip to a new Qualcomm Atheros chip already, but there was no change. I tried a few "speed up your WiFi connection" blog posts. But that also changed nothing.
Do you guys have any advice? :-\27 -
Exactly 2 days before I change my username to something new. See you guys later! I hope someone remembers me :)

OK - so I have a new job which I am loving but I am needing to use a Mac book which is a little frustrating. Coming from Linux with I3wm I have stuff just so.
The biggest change I miss is that I can't hover the mouse over windows to give them focus. Also middle click pasting would be awesome. Does anyone have any advice / solutions to make me feel at home? -
Web service consumer: hey I need you to add new methods to this service

It's time to say goodbye...
... to PacRom.
//(PacRom?
//PacRom is a custom rom which has tons of //unique features. Problem: It's supports only a //few devices, like my good old OnePlus One.)
But why do I want a change now?
1. I don't get any updates or security patches any more. Yes, it hadn't stopped me to change for a longe time, but I think now that my device has more holes than a cheese.
2. I have an old Android Version (5.1.1) so I have some problems with performance and compatibility in general and with some apps.
3. I want something new, a change.
Which Custom Rom will I use next?
I want to try Ubuntu Touch for a while and then I want to go to LineageOS, but I am open minded for other ideas or suggestions.4 -
Hey Linux users!
I have successfully convinced a friend to change from MacOS to a Linux based system (because she needs new hardware).
Now I am asking myself which distribution would be most qualified for her. She is a relatively old lady and only knows Mac (no Windows or Linux knowledge), so it should be easier for her if the new system would look similar to the Mac environment she knows. (Using console is no problem.)
Another point is compatibility: She needs some (commercial) software (like GitKraken and design stuff), so it would be cool if the Linux versions of them would work on the distro (for one or two programmes Wine is needed).
After my own reasearch I came up with Elementary OS or Gmac.
Because I have no experience with Mac I want to ask you: Has anyone here some experiences with these two systems and/or with a change from Mac to Linux and could recommand a distribution or desktop environment?
Thank you!10 -
Two weeks before the release of a major new version of an application I'm working on, the testers finally got round to testing the new functionality (a set of a few features and a new page). They didn't agree with the requirements and got the requirements to change with the product owner.
The product owner now says that these changes "are easy to implement" and "the new requirements are clear" even though the other devs and I all don't understand the change. How would a product owner even know it is easy to implement?
Fun times.1 -
Client says the algo is producing figures that are too high, I change the algo, explain to the client the new algo and client is now requesting proof that the algo has changed so I have to run the whole process with new algo, give figures, delete figures and run old algo on same data and give figures created by old algo for comparison... And at the same time the same person is screaming that promised changes are not yet delivered... Sometimes I really hate my job *sigh*

Told client in review meeting with missing PM (vacation) that the live release of their new website for the end of may is very optimistic and we probably should target a later date due to more change and feature requests.
1.5 weeks pass and the clients sends updated requests and also their new launch date: 18th if May.
Yeah sure also write your emails to the PM that is on vacation - like you’ve been informed of several times.
When deadlines get even shorter, I really envy not-agency people.2 -

My first dev job was for a .net shop. Until then, I had only worked in Java and PHP. This place didn't have the normal team structure, and I soon found that I was going to be working solo on the projects I was responsible for. I'm my first week there, I was tasked with making make revisions to an application in a new language, with a new toolkit, solo. A few weeks later was the most intense day I've had as a dev, as I put in the change control to release my update to production.2

Hello ranters, I have to send my beloved laptop to acer support to get somethings fixed and I'm worried for my stickers. Xcode Lockup #35: Changing Variable Names
You right click on a variable and get the opportunity to change the name throughout the project. Yea!
It does this funky visual collapse thing which is rather nice, showing you everywhere it is used. Fancy. And the world needs more fancy, doesn't it.
For some reason instead of letting me change the variable, I get the Beach Ball Of Death and Xcode unceremoniously quits. BUT NOT BEFORE THE FUCKER SAVED THE PROJCT FILE STATE. What?
Now I re-open the project and yep, we are back into the variable name change fancy interface and Beach Ball Of Death. Looks like the project file is now fucked.
But it was oh so important to give me the fancy folding interface... we (Xcode dorks) will fix the defects later.
Time to do some research and find an Xcode manager mailing address... cuz I'm really tired of this shit...

Updating firewall rules:
You can modify some components of a firewall rule, such as the specified protocols and ports for the match condition. You cannot modify a firewall rule's name, network, the action on match, and the direction of traffic.
If you need to change the name, network, or the action or direction component, you must delete the rule and create a new one instead.

REALLY???? goddamn delete and create a new rule to damn changing even its name???
And they wonder why their goddamn cloud won't take off? hell... how can this even be a Google product!!??5 -
Got bored and tired of making my program at JavaFX, decided to change to new programming language with new GUI framework. Chose Ruby and after a bit of research the easiest GUI framework is Shoes. unlimited time is not the only problem. During that time I'd get hungry, cold and tired -- I need to afford to buy food, have a home with roof and warmth. So with unlimited time, I'll also need unlimited funds.
And if I had unlimited funds I'd spend most of my time AFK: buying a house, making it pretty, setting up my own lab and a solar+wind powerplant, recruiting some folks to finish my project for me. Then travel all around the world, while my code monkeys are busy making me famous for introducing new tech to the world - so new, that it'll change the way we live, that it'll change our communication, interaction and other habits. And then I'll be ready for the EternalLife underground project, where another set of teams of bio-monkeys will be busy making my consciousness alive after my body wears out.
If only I had all those funds...

The new AWS CodeCommit console is SOOOOOO SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW holy shit.

My most recent workaround occurred last week.
We have a demo very soon and I had to change our iOS app to use a new Web API endpoint for uploading content.
Long story short: The existing code is so awful and rigid and dependant on Core Data that I ended up having to completely bypass the service layer of the app and implement the new endpoint as a raw HTTP request. Its gonna take a long time to refactor the existing service layer. All because the new endpoint has a different content type. -

Why the fuck does proxmox change its primary network interface name after I installed a new SSD?
Thought I broke my poor server :c2 -
I'm interning at a mech eng company. Our products have many possible permutations that customers can choose from a spec sheet.
The backend for us mechanical designers is equivalent to copying and pasting the same code (with slight changes) into a massive switch statement depending on the program's options. So many near duplicate drawings. Each with individual settings that need to be tweaked and linked to other new duplicates every time a new order comes in.
As a programmer it drives me absolute bonkers! I've talked to them about automating it but "we've just always done it this way, so it probably won't change". Well, as soon as I'm done grinding this current project, I'm hoping to put together a practical demo to change their minds.2 -
Change of technology. There's one time that the team can't decide what tech to use. So after 2 years of production suddenly we moved from Nodejs to Elixir for server side and MySql to Cassandra for database ... It is crazy that time...
So learning a new language it was so difficult as elixir is functional ... (And I was sucks back then) , and Cassandra is something new to me , which is difficult.
(Hey bit now it is ok ) -

Da fuck is doing AWS redesigning the UI to a new style? It is even worse, what the hell is this new crap? They have a lot of unresolved stuff with their services but yeah... Let's do a new UI, as if the ones working with AWS would care about a "cute UI". Don't change the shit that it's working and we already know.3

We're moving our services to a new app interface, and it drives me crazy when a BA tells me to make something look like the old, terrible app because "user's won't like a change." You're making a whole new app! You can fix the terrible appearance and functionality issues! Take advantage of this!
It's starting to feel like I'm putting together an awful Frankenstein's Monster of code and components. -

Question about PR best practices.
I work for an analytics company and often have to implement new ETL steps. The data transformations in these steps can be complex and the major changes are usually 500+ lines up to around 2000 (the last one had 765 lines just for schemas).
What's the best way to split up the changes into multiple PRs, bearing in mind that it isnt guaranteed that a file won't change as the change is built up? -
Just wasted whole day with plesk webhosting :D
Decided to move to a DDOS protected hosting by OVH.com
Chose plesk web hosting
Turns out in order to park domain to plesk webhosting it's necessary to change GLUE records and nameservers to point to plesk VPS IP
My domain registrar where I have 10+ domains does not allow changing GLUE records. Only way to make it work would be to move all domains to new registrar and pay for each domain as it's a new one.
FML just wasted 16 euros on this useless plesk webhosting. Need to take regular webhosting :D3 -

mild rant. Android phone updated last night. Phone rings this morning. Swiping right to answer does not work. After putting glasses on, I can read the miniscule "swipe up..." text. OK, they put some words on there, not their fault I tried to answer the phone without glasses. But, why the world change how the phone gets answered? What it really a problem? I've already discovered a new one: reaching into my pocket to get out ringing phone caused an accidental swipe up so the call was answered before I got to look at the caller id info. Just another thing changed that wasn't broken to begin with. And no, I could not find a setting to change it back.4

Im done wih you "switch"
I have a viewpager and have its on page change listener from it i change some ui stuff like reseting previous page icon and color the new one and set the page title .
Inside of the code i used "switch" to change the stuff depending on the position.
The color did changed but the title stucked at last switch case for every page so i spent hours to find why its doing that ...
The input was ok .
So i just said lets try "if" instead and it worked ._.
Defaq switch ?
Why to use something that has a big chance to fail and theres not much to debug there ?
Whats your comment about it .
Do you ever faced something similar ?2 -
I was signing up for a new account on Magic. I wasn't paying attention so I accidentally didn't change my date of birth, so it didn't let me create an account because they thought I was just born today. I changed that field but nope, it remembered I had told it I was 1 day old and it didn't let me change my mind. Delete cookies, nothing. Reload page, nothing. So I go into Postman and re-create the request and BOOM! I even got an access token for their API. This is why I love being a dev.

How do you handle a customer asking too much revisions
I have a client asked for a web app, i made it and everytime he asks for a change, edit, add new functionality, then he thinks back, no remove that and re-add that, change color, no i don't like it, change to this, hmm move this here back and forth i just wish i didn't deal with him in the first place...
so frustrating3 -
Why do I feel like the keys on my keyboard change places whenever I change my IDE?
Whenever I switch from Eclipse to Vim, I need to spend like 30 min getting use to the "new" key arrangement and to stop hitting "z" instead of "shift".1 -
Just some figma improvements from the perspective of a new customer:
* Copy/paste is broken. If I want to make a change, I have to create a whole new
component. They recommend cmd+c/v for copypaste but as far as I can see it does nothing
* Needs to be an explicit component drawer button instead of hiding it under assets. Through me for a loop for a couple minutes.
* Empty textboxes shouldn't vanish because you happened to click in the wrong location
while setting your properties.
* Text should start big enough to actually see.
* "send to back/front", "hide item", "change transparency' all need to be prototype actions and more, give us access to object properties both by parent/sibling/child, and by
object id
* create a new frame based on a specified size is non-obvious and if you're creating
a lot of frames, what with copypaste being non-intuitive, it can become laborious.
This is especially so when you're copying frames in order to make minor changes and observe the differences side by side, instead of potentially destructive edits.
* I see no obvious way to manage transitions/animations between frames.
* The difference between frames and groups isn't sufficiently explained. The words
frame, groups, and layers all appear to new users to be used interchangeably, even
if they are distinct things.2 -

What is your default git branch? is it master or main?
When they started changing default branch from "master" to "main", & forcing us the change, what was your initial reaction?
I was very much annoyed! & I'm still using master as my default branch. But pretty sure, the new generation of git users would use main as default in the future, & that kinda bothers me.27 -
I have for a very long time wondered about, what do people do when using git and databases? If I locally add new columns to the db, how in the world would you easily make the change in production?

Why SQL, why???
I have a proc I need to modify so I add a select into it. Drop the proc and recreate it, run it, new select not giving results.
Modify the select to inverse filter to see what I do have, recreate the proc, run it, still no results...
Run four different cache cleaning queries, still no results from the new select...
Add a "select 1" before the new select, recreate and run the proc and now I have the new 1 and also the other select now has results...
Change the filters back, still getting same results...
Remove the select 1, no results...
What kind of devil cache is this?5 -

Why does MobX hate modern Javascript?! It's like I've just entered into a new relationship, and they're already trying to change me!

What do y'all think? I'm new here, junior. I finish my tasks generally well within the allotted time. At the moment I take my time, look over my work and try make sure I've done things correctly / as best I can. At first I tried to work quickly and show that I was motivated. Now I've really lowered my acceleration because it feels like no one else is in a rush.. except for when there's deadline pressure. It feels like no one really expects me to get much done. Like, change the theme colors, you've got 3 days. I'm done in like an hour. So I go sloooooooow, change something, go on Reddit or devrant, change something else. Don't check that change in yet, they'll know you've been finished for hours...
Do you think this is the right approach? Or should I try apply myself more, get more done, do extra tasks when I have time? From what I've read online, it's generally not worth working "more" than necessary because it's not appreciated and just results in people expecting more from you.

Someone earlier today posted a rant about a credit card security conference sending them account details with a plain text password in an email. The password appeared to be 1 use temporary password that the user would change on first login. Assuming one does not actually store plain text passwords, what is the downside to a single use password Vs a single use link to set a new password?1

We finally publish the new release of our game (v1.2.1)!! Yuhuuuuuu !!
BUT we change the app's name (removing a space, from Bong Ville to Bongville ) and Google don't want to change it on the results page, and if it wasn't enough big G. suggests Bougainville (that's a plant, a beautiful full of purple flowers plant) instead of our game.
But we are positive 😅✌😉
(Same prob for our site www.bongville.net, that seems to not exist) but again, no prob, we are positive 😅 -
Hey look! I just finished configuring my window manager, better change it to a new one and start configuring it...1

Coding came years ago as a career change (evolved from a hobby), and though I was in engineering before, this career has brought my critical thinking to a whole new level.

I am new here. Just started building a website. Can any help me out with my doubt please.
I just want to change the background color of my website. Which attributes should I use and what are the inputs4 -
Okay, here is the thing. I'm reviewing some changes about a new Pop Up component made in React.
Everything starts as usual; seeing the new code, what they remove, what they added. But for some reason one of my fellows decide to change the whole structure and changing component site to another folder, renaming and doing a lot of stuff not related to what we were suppose to do in that dev.
Am OK with improving code during new additions or tweaks of code but this... this goes too far.
Now am not sure of pushing all the changes to master cause I can't ensure everything will be fine... crap.
That's all, just needed to spell it out. -
Want to change distro and wanted your advice. I'm moving away from Kubuntu mostly due to tons of issues on power management (hibernation either not actually hibernating and depletes battery or not waking up afterwards)
I'm thinking of Pop OS or MXLinux, mostly for checking out something new. Do you have any experience of these? -
I really hate it when I'm fixing an error, whenever I change something in my code I always got new different errors. FML 🔫

WordPress Pods "introduced new Access Rights checks and comprehensive functionality to assist you in limiting how your content types can be used by other users."
In other words, they have just introduced a breaking change that hides CMS content elements that were expected to be visible publicly to everyone. -
Org is doing a major conversion to containerized solutions and modern technology. Most of which I can wholly support, only 1 catch. everything will need to be ported to Java. we are a mixed shop of largely PHP and Javascript devs with only a handful of devs who actively use Java regularly, this change throws away tons of previously built battle tested code in order to swap to putting all new code on an all new platform. I thought the point of containers was to be able to isolate and run whatever you want within the container and have it highly portable...

How can we modify ec2 instance with cdk stack or pipeline?
I am able to launch the ec2 instance but whenever i modify the stack it creates a new instance.
