Just because you do backend and I do frontend doesn't mean you can talk down to me. And I swear that the next time you say you made all the work and I just have to "style it" I'll just leave. Our most senior and most competent backend developer got fired, he got told he "wasn't committed enough". This dude did the most complex tasks really quickly (and competently), could configure the most boring stuff off the top of his mind, and brought great culture to the company from his previous 20+ years of experience. He was about to implement some cool automation stuff, and improved our processes a great deal.

Now he's being let go. I was fearing *I* would get fired because I'm much slower and less knowledgeable than this guy.

When I talked to him, he figured the so-called "lack of commitment" was because he had missed a few standups the last few days, and got late to today's standup.

Now the boss (who is a less experienced than this dev who was let go, but co-founder of the company) was changing the database credentials (which we somehow have access to) and had the product down for like half an hour because of it.

I don't think firing this developer was a wise decision at all, and that's putting it generously. What a shame. Now I'm also a bit scared because the responsibilities of this developer might likely fall upon me. But generally I think we're worse off without this guy, and getting someone as good as him will take time.

My Senior php backend team leader told me I could choose a new laptop, he said:

Here is what happened: I am a backend developer and was asked to replace some images on some website (not even sure this is supposed to be a backend task). So i did, changes went through review and then they were live.
A few hours later they come to me saying i made a mistake because the image has wrong color tone in one of the browsers (internally facepalming myself)... I didn't design the images nor made any changes to them... I just fucking uploaded the files that were sent to me... That's fucking it.
They blamed me for a design issue and how I should've noticed this issue blah blah blah... And i had to spend an entire fucking hour to explain to them step by step what i did, how i did it and why the color tone was wrong even though i am not a designer and my main tool is VISUAL FUCKING STUDIO AND NOT PHOTOSHOP.

The shit part is that the images were sent to us by the client, so really, it is their fucking fault not mine.
Oh, and they tried to guilt me by saying the client won't pay for this since the images are wrong.

Lost an hour to this bullshit.

I am UI developer. The fucking domain model which we have in our project changes very frequently (once in a week (f**k)).

There is one person who is backend developer in this project. I call him TATTI because code he wrotes is "maha tatti".

Now real story,
Whene ever he makes any chnages to, so called, very complex domain model, he even doesn't inform me to reflect changes in UI. So whenever it goes on production, our boss abuse me for not updating UI.

Fucking tatti, just message me what should be changed or not and I really don't understand why they need changes in domain model every week.

F**g cto, decide domain structure first and then tell your team to start implementing it.

Other thing, when ever I ask tatti any doubt about any field is needed to display in UI or not because it is removed or added in domain model, he fucking chutiya starts explaining me whole project instead of just telling yes or no.

I don't care what your fucking backend does. Just tell me what is needed or not. And also he is not sure whether to keep that field or not even he had made that change.

And to top it all, it's the frontend team that handles all the pressure when the deadline comes up and the project's late, even if it was the product/design/whatever phase that took too much time.

Being a frontend developer is very stressful and has so many annoyances and I'm getting sick of it.

My company's been promising giving me some backend work because there are some backend-heavy projects coming up and they know I have the skills, but they just keep giving me frontend work. Also, one of our frontend developers is on leave, which means more work for the rest of us.

We had a lot of back and forth and me reverting the things back to non minified and him back to minified on live environement. I once worked at a small dev shop with a team of about 5. I was the lead but I was also the only backend developer. Since it was such a small company I also managed the Datacenter... which we had in our building. It was messy, but impressive. Although I seemed to be always stressed and felt like my job was always on the line... I do miss how excited I got when I learned something new. I was then able to talk to my boss about how excited I was to learn it and I can't wait to learn something new. I'm sad because I don't get that excited anymore. Now, I'm not really learning anything new, I'm just posting my skills as a developer. It really bums me out. I only wish that I had a degree in computer science so I can become a teacher and see my students get as excited as I was.

So I've finally decided to move from Windows to Linux. However, there are so many distros of linux available now which made me confused in choosing the right one.

What would be the best linux distro for a backend web developer? I don't mind if there would be a learning curve. Thanks

Recently left my job because anxiety, a lot of it.

Tbh, I should not burntout myself, because:
- salary was a shit
- the scrum was a lie, there was no end of the sprint, so no retrospective meeting ever done.
- They change the """sprint""" task pile at any moment, usually adding more tasks for the same sprint.
- previous project manager was an idiot who said "yes" at EVERYTHING the client asked, even if the request was outside tje scope of the project.

The project was heavily delayed, and I was the only developer left on the most hideous backend you can imagine (the code was just tje very definition of "what not to do"). NO UNIT TESTING at all.

My task: clean the mess so we have a """stable""" release (with the tests), add the new features and re-do the backend again, but this time properly.

8 months of develop for this shit and they wanted the stable-shit-backend in a month and the new backend in other month "because everithing was already done in the shitty one". Do not forget the new features too.

So, I was doing the imposible to try to do tje task, overdoing hours and reading the docs of the project (because I was new in it), but it take me.a lot of effort to simply correct bugs because of complexity of the code and not understanding fully some parts of the project.

Then the comments like "why this is not finished yet?" Or "I do not understand why this is taking so long"

So, I had poor sleep, I was anxious because my inhability to do the imposible and in the end, a feeling kind of defeated because I quit.

The HR sent me a mail with details for MERN developer position (Full-stack) and asked me do an assignment with frontend and backend 🤔
I requested to clarify if I'm supposed to do only frontend as that's the position I applied for.
No response on that. They got back and requested me to schedule an interview.
I have worked with NodeJS before but I primarily work on the frontend, still I went along with it anyway.
I aced the first two rounds, but for the final round they emphasized on the backend and then it went downhill. At the end they said I was really good on the frontend but for that position they needed someone particularly with expertise on the backend. 🤷‍♂️
Well, I didn't intend to work Full-stack anyway.

The project manager decided to configure the the git repo as a single repo with all of the different projects for the services and the project of the webapp. All in one. Everytime you update something the merge results absurd and this happened…

I'm a front end developer who knows Ruby on rails and Node Js, I still call myself a freaking FRONT END DEVELOPER because I don't have enough knowledge of the required concepts to trust my skill in a complex backend project.

How the fuck there are so many full stack developers who lack shit tons of knowledge in both specialties! And worst of those are asp.net "FULLSTACK DEVS" that can't write JavaScript without copying and pasting from SO and don't know that display flex is a thing!

Boss only likes stuff he can see and that looks pretty. Doesn't understand code, servers, containers, DBs, etc. Praise is attributed by something looking nice in the frontend, whether or not it does crazy stuff behind the scenes.

Spent a week working on a project whilst boss was away. Got to about Thursday and thought, oh poop, I've built all this API stuff, but not much frontend. So I panic built frontend screens with no functionality just so I had something to show.

Wish I had another dev to share backend progress with (and code review)...

I got an internship as a Software Developer!.... So I thought.

I have been here for 4 months now, all I have done is manually insert data into a excel spreadsheet and upload it to the backend system through a UI. I haven't done any coding whatsoever or even spoke about it.

The SENIOR backend developer at the company I used to (as of today) work has a degree in economics and business and his only experience has been a trainee position.

I found weird that some developer never ask why when facing a problem. "What do you mean never ask why?" here some story.

Let's say a developer work with simple app. Laravel as Backend and Postgresql as Database. He face a problem that the app very slow when searching data.

In order to solve that problem he implement cache using redis but he found problem that it fast occasionally. In order to solve that problem he implement elasticsearch because he think elasticsearch very good for search but he found another problem that sometimes data on postgresql out of sync with data on elasticsearch. In order to solve that problem he implement cronjobs to fix out of sync data but he found another problem that cronjobs cannot fix out of sync data in real time. and so on...

Do you see the problem? He never ask why the app slow. Which part search the data? Backend or Database (Search in the Backend mostly slower than Database because Backend have to get all data on database first). Has the query been optimized? (limit offset, indexing). How about the internet connection? etc.

For me it's important to ask why when facing a problem and try to solve the problem as simple as possible.

A backend developer was tired of building data for the templates. So he created a macro/filter for our in house template lexer. This filter allowed the web designers (didn't really call them frond end devs yet back then) could just at an SQL statement in the templates.

The macro had no safe argument parsing and the designers knew basic SQL but did not know about SQL Injection and used string concatination to insert all kinds of user and request data in the queries.
Two months after this novel feature was introduced we had SQL injections all over the place when some piece of input was missing but worse the whole product was riddled with SQLi vulnerabilities.

I decided to quit my job. I was supposedly hired as an Android developer, but during the past few months I found myself doing everything except Android development: SQL scritps, frontend web development, backend web development, RESTful API's, DBA, release engineering... There's nothig wrong about being versatile, it's actually fun, but I wasn't doing what I really wanted to do and, most importantly, the manager didn't appreciate the fact that I was doing things that I'm not supposed to do, and not only that, I was doing it just as good as some full time web devs who do nothing but web development in the company. I'm pissed off. They probably believe the next Android dev they hire will do all the shit I was doing, accepting the same pay. Fuck them.

The backend people at my old company had 4 files which they all committed code to (they were about 10 people). The only reason they didn't use a single file, according to the lead developer, was that Eclipse could only handle 12k lines per file (or something like that).

The first thing that matters to me for applying for a job is how their project that I am going to work on will improve me. I have refused a job position with a higher salary just because they want me as their only developers for their website and other things. Instead, I applied for another job with lower salary but now I am a backend developer of a team of 15 developers making a great product and I have learned many experiences.

Just had an interview with our new potential product manager. I companioned our CEO, if technical questions arise...

First, he came to our office, to the interview, and never..never looked at our application. Neither he saw some screenshots, review's or anything related to the product. As a potential product manager...gasp

What does full stack developer mean these days. It used to mean you could work the database, the backend code and the UI. What does it mean now?

Backend API developer that doesn't admit his mistakes. Damn, he's annoying the whole team.

Basically crashed the whole app by messing up the settings for the CORS policy, and still doesn't admit it. When he fixed it, the only reply we get was "I erased the thing and put it back and it works".

One day my colleague says that React Js is used for frontend as well as backend. I did not agree with him also he blames that Backend API’s also can be created using React Js. I could not believe because as per I know React Js is a library for frontend not for Backend. Still, some other colleagues supported him because he is the senior developer I am an intermediate developer.

Then I ask some of my friends who are currently working on React Js, Can we use React Js for the backend? And the next day I went office and talk to my colleague that I could not found that React JS can be used for backend and backend API. And he replied You can use nodejs. Oh! It seems almost everyone here is a web or mobile developer of some sort. Am I the only non-student, desktop developer? I occasionally do some backend web stuff, but I just do a lot of desktop stuff (mostly C++)

What To Learn?

I'm a beginner in web development and have knowledge about html, css, JavaScript, jQuery, Sass, NodeJS, Express, MongoDB, Passport. You can consider me to be a beginner full stack developer, but I'm confused about what to learn further. There are so many front end frameworks that one can spend his entire life learning them. React, Vue, Angular, Backbone, etc. But I always want to learn backend properly, then there's Rails, PHP, SQL, Python. Can anyone atleast tell me what to learn and why exactly? This thing's making me mad and anxious.

I've been a developer for 15+ years, all the time as a consultant with so many different clients, have been mobile developer(ios and android), front end, backend, and many other roles, I love programming, but lately, I don't know, don't feel excited about it anymore.

I lie on every interview when they ask what am I looking for in a project, to be honest, everything looks the same to me, just showing some parsed data, which is provided by a backend which is stored in a database, at the end everything resumes to this, I do not see any challenge, or any interesting thing about this anymore.

I don't know, I mean, you can get good money on this profession, be in big offices and stuff, but, there is something missing, at least for me, is like, nobody speaks each other, no friendship, no honesty, no connections, is like, come on, we spent most of our most useful hours day after day in here, there should be a connection or something, I see many people(including me) having lunch with their cellphones, is kinda sad, I wonder if it was like that in the past.

I don't know, it feels so gray lately.

Just because I needed to fix database after bug fix on the backend of the application.
I thought I wrote good sql statement after executing it on my local machine and then everything got bad.

Luckily it was only one column with some cached statistics data and I checked that it was not important data before I actually started fixing stuff but still ...
Almost got hard attack afterwards.
Made a script to fix this column and it took me only 15 minutes but still...

Bug was caused in part I got no unit tests and application grow after 3 years of development from simple one for one customer and volumes of documents around 50k to over 40 customers and volumes over 2mil per month, don’t know how many pages each, just in one year after we completed all needed features.

I have daily backups and logs of every api operation but still.
I think this got to far for one backend developer.

I got scared that I will loose money cause I am contractor and the only backend developer working on it.
I am so tired of this right now I think I need a break from work.

Responsibility is killing me so hard right now.
It will take a week to get back to normal.

A couple months ago I started working at a company as a student backend developer.

Last week there was an intenship conference at my school in which I got to represent my company, and talk to my classmates about their possible internships. They were amazed to see me on the other side of the table.

Feels good to be able to start a career at an early age in the developer world!

# Retrospective as Backend engineer

Once upon a time, I was rejected by a startup who tries to snag me from another company that I was working with.
They are looking for Senior / Supervisor level backend engineer and my profile looks like a fit for them.
So they contacted me, arranged a technical test, system design test, and interview with their lead backend engineer who also happens to be co-founder of the startup.

## The Interview

As usual, they asked me what are my contribution to previous workplace.
I answered them with achievements that I think are the best for each company that I worked with, and how to technologically achieve them.

One of it includes designing and implementing a `CQRS+ES` system in the backend.
With complete capability of what I `brag` as `Time Machine` through replaying event.

## The Rejection

And of course I was rejected by the startup, maybe specifically by the co-founder. As I asked around on the reason of rejection from an insider.

They insisted I am a guy who overengineer thing that are not needed, by doing `CQRS+ES`, and only suitable for RND, non-production stuffs.

Nobody needs that kind of `Time Machine`.

After switching jobs (to another company), becoming fullstack developer, learning about react and redux.
I can reflect back on this past experience and say this:

The same company that says `CQRS+ES` is an over engineering, also uses `React+Redux`.
Never did they realize the concept behind `React+Redux` is very similar to `CQRS+ES`.

- Separation of concern
- CQRS: `Command` is separated from `Query`
- Redux: Side effect / `Action` in `Thunk` separated from the presentation
- Managing State of Application
- ES: Through sequence of `Event` produced by `Command`
- Redux: Through action data produced / dispatched by `Action`
- Replayability
- ES: Through replaying `Event` into the `Applier`
- Redux: Through replay `Action` which trigger dispatch to `Reducer`

The same company that says `CQRS` is an over engineering also uses `ElasticSearch+MySQL`.
Never did they realize they are separating `WRITE` database into `MySQL` as their `Single Source Of Truth`, and `READ` database into `ElasticSearch` is also inline with `CQRS` principle.

## Value as Backend Engineer

It's a sad days as Backend Engineer these days. At least in the country I live in.
Seems like being a backend engineer is often under-appreciated.
Company (or people) seems to think of backend engineer is the guy who ONLY makes `CRUD` API endpoint to database.

- I've heard from Fullstack engineer who comes from React background complains about Backend engineers have it easy by only doing CRUD without having to worry about application.
- The same guy fails when given task in Backend to make a simple round-robin ticketing system.
- I've seen company who only hires Fullstack engineer with strong Frontend experience, fails to have basic understanding of how SQL Transaction and Connection Pool works.
- I've seen company Fullstack engineer relies on ORM to do super complex query instead of writing proper SQL, and prefer to translate SQL into ORM query language.
- I've seen company Fullstack engineer with strong React background brags about Uncle Bob clean code but fail to know on how to do basic dependency injection.
- I've heard company who made webapp criticize my way of handling `session` through http secure cookie. Saying it's a bad practice and better to use local storage. Despite my argument of `secure` in the cookie and ability to control cookie via backend.

Why team leads assume that because the designer took 10 minutes to adjust a form, it means it will take me also 10 minutes to adjust the code?

Especially if I just strated working with the theme. And I told them I'm a backend developer who did little work with theming....

So I am working on a cloud app, Angular on the frontend and NestJS with heavy AWS dependency at the backend. I took my time to learn the stack and I have a couple of years of experience with each piece involved.
Since I am a Level 1 developer, management thought (and I felt same way) it would be nice for me to work with a couple of Level 3 devs.

Well, they hired Level 3 devs:
- a senior Java developer who never touched AWS, any kind of frontend or Typescript
- a senior c++ dev with the same “never touched” as above

And guess what? I have to train them both in Angular, Typescript etc. Kinda defeats the whole purpose of L3, “they will help you to deliver stuff fast”, and adds load on me (I am already a shared resource on 3 teams).
Oh, and yeah, management already promised to release the app by the end of the year and so far I am the only capable and functional developer on the team who has to deliver everything.

I had so much hope for new hiring cycle lol

So all this comments bitching front end devs seem to come from fresh out of college guys who pride themselves for solving hackerrank moderate problems. Oh you know how to use a backend framework and upvote answers on SO? Gotta be a genius definitely, you surely deserve to be called a developer.

No idea how I ended up here. So basically started with simple wordpress websites, transitioned to react. This move was the hardest.

Then caught up on node and mongodb. And before i knew i was doing db, backend and front end tasks. Now i know bits and pieces of everything

I don’t like the term “full stack dev”. I personally feel like I’m a Jack of all trades and master of none. There’s so much to learn if you’re a full stack developer. Endless possibilities, endless rants and endless frustration 🤯

How is coupling backend + frontend as a single nextjs app a good idea? What the fuck is this?

What if you have to create new replica sets of a backend because of high load pressure? What about load balancers?? What if i want my backend to be a microservice? How do i unit test the backend if its cluttered with frontend? WTF IS THIS

Scratching my head over nextjs. Looks like a great framework for small-mid project but definitely not large project. The more shit the project needs the more messy shit become. Angular has modularized all of this in separate folders -- components services guards interceptors (now new stuff coming called Signals) etc. All of it is separated in individual folders and kept frontend-only. Simple enough. No backend clutter

I just so happen to always end up working on the frontend because you bunch of handless monkeys wouldn't be able to write a webpack config file if your life depended on it.

It's been 1 month in my first dev job.

Despite my role as a full stack dev in a fullstack team, I deal with only frontend stuff so far.

I asked to get some backend tasks from my boss, and he said "in due time".

I'm a backend developer and one day my team lead asked me to make a architecture diagram of our system, which he had to put in a PPT and demo it to a client. I did it for 15-20 minutes. And I completely hated doing it. I went and said "I will not do it". He then just took it from me and did it.. which he is supposed to. Felt very Very good doing that!!

I started at a tiny Web firm as a front-end dev. I was OK at it at best. Only 6 months in to this part-time job (I was also a firearms instructor), the only backend developer left. I was then forced to pick up a book to learn ColdFusion 8. I had to finish a project for a multi billion company... even though I only knew basic queries and form submissions. At the end of the project I learned so much... I went back to pages that I knew were terrible and refactored them. Since there are so fresh CF developers I was able to get contract positions in many places. Over 6 months later I now work for one of the largest development companies in the states.

I am php laravel developer with little knowledge about nodejs.
I got selected by one startup as nodejs developer.
frankly I am not better nodejs developer than my competition who were rejected.

I completed oral interview with my nodejs theory knowledge at a time of technical round , they gave us task to create crud with fantastic front end and nodejs mongo as a back end.

I developed front end in bootstrap but at a time of backend, I just copy paste code from github.

and changed everything variable and other proof to hide reality. in mean time other candidates were actually coding everything then I took time to understand this code and I submitted after few candidates.

in last round they ask me to explain code which I explained properly and I get salary 40k/month INR.

I have been using and learning C++ since like 4 years now and it is my truely favorite language. It just is a joy to work with. Tried others but couldn't handle them (no offense. Just a personal preference) so here is the question:

What should I do in future? Like which field would be most enjoyable?

Currently, I feel game programming is it... I do enjoy whatever puny game like thing I make way more than anything...

I also specifically enjoy creating backend stuff...
(I always end up creating mechanics for working of game engine but never creating the actual game... Like creating an asset manager or something but not using it).

By backend stuff, I mean something which requires me to think a lot as to how can I implement something and then implement it (again, in C++). And then another developer could make use of it.

I heard game development has a very low scope for growth and is very very tedious... Is it true? What route should I go to?

Btw, I enjoy building stuff from ground up, although ofc that doesn't happen haha...

So at one point I worked for an online clothes store and their frontend developers were treated like the sun shined from their backsides, never a problem.
But the backend staff were treated like consumables, their PHP developer turnaround was insane, they'd come up bizarre reasons to let people go including one person who was fired because he argued with a director because how the director wanted their new feature to be programmed was simply broken.

The joys of bring a Fullstack developer..

Sometimes beings junior Fullstack developer I find myself in tricky situations.

This past week I was invited to a meeting with all the front-end developers where we were presenting our software when a 500error popped up...( I was day dreaming looking out the window watching two birds hop around)Then I heard one developer ask what the problem was and another quickly replied "backend problem"... Still half asleep and deep in my new found interest in birds I blurted out "maybe the front-end is not sending the request properly".... Immediately the room fell silent... this sent a chill down my spine and I was brought back to reality, I looked round the room and everyone was staring at me like I insulted their mothers... I tried to make a joke of it but saying "Sorry I forgot this was a front-end meeting"... The lead architect who for some reason was also present then said "at least someone sees things differently"... And everyone laughed (although I'm not sure how sincere their laughs were).

I remember our PM/GM used to give us a website name and one line of website description, then he disappears to attend meeting outside the company. His phone is switched off most of the times and he doesn't reply to messages or emails.
2 days later, which is our fixed deadline for a website, he comes and says why the website is not up yet!

Note: One developer for one website and the developer has to design, write content and code frontend & backend.

Roll into game development, preferably one with not so much crunch.

So my boss wants me to develop a complete business management solution + mobile app. (It’s a startup project based company). She doesn’t want to use dubsado / asana / etc and wants me to take the best of all and custom build it for her.

I lost my faith in my dev career after 3 months of graduating college and into a full time job as a backend developer.
I learned nothing in college that was beneficial for me at work. and I felt like I was pushed into a sea with sharks and tsunami and without the ability to swim.

Need some advice again. I'm a junior backend developer or that's at least what I try to call myself.

For the first year at this company I did a lot of backend which I love and really enjoy, eventually they let me do devops and migrations. Okay, but not really what I wanted.

Two months ago, I started my internship at the same company. Now they wanted me to do Shopify, I hate to do frontend, only thing I enjoy is the JavaScript. Fucking sucks but okay, eventually it will be done.

And fucking today I heard they wanted me on support mostly, isolated from the rest into another room with the (dumb) zero experience trainee.

I honestly don't know what to say? Should I refuse? I do have some power because they accepted 3 other projects which require my expertise with migrations. Like why don't they use me were I'm good at, backend?

After I was woken up in the morning by my friend that had a meeting nearby.
We went for coffee and as part of usual Wednesday I also decided to go to cinema to see Dr Dollitle ( not verry funny ).

I felt relaxed as everyone fucked off from me since Monday.

I was so happy of doing nothing after the movie I decided to try to make both frontend and backend for new application screens in finite time.

I could have waited for frontend developer to be back from his vacation but since I can also do it I decided to do it myself.

I did frontend part first with mock data and after finishing it before 2 pm asked if client will have time to discuss it. He didn’t so we decided I try to add real data and publish it on test environment.

Well those are mock up screens anyway so I decided to eat and smoke to chill but also try to work anyway.

I just finished backend for those screens and switched test environment to new branch.
Looks like they’re working for biggest client customers.

Usually it takes about a week or two to describe frontend developer what client wants but let’s see if I still have some frontend UX empathy left and can speed up development by couple of days.

I can set up website in production doing both backend w database and front end with js csd html. But my design skills are not great. I prefer being behind the scenes but am i selling myself short? Am i really a full stack developer who just stinks at css?

In previous company I was a backend developer. All the frontend ones were on vacation so it was up me to redo the whole frontend because of design chance. So i thought it couldn't be that bad. Little did i know was that designs were just jpg files with no info about margins or font sizes or anything really and everything was supposed to be pixel perfect. Fuck. That. Place.

Today is my first day as back-end developer in a big e-commerce company (MercadoLibre). I'm really excited.

Recently, our backend team has gotten smaller. The company has stopped the collaboration with the company of the backend lead developer.

We are currently lacking backend developers while we have way too many frontend developers right now (compared to backend).

How can I, as a front-end developer, switch to back-end?

Having a CTO who was a strong backend developer, has zero understanding of UI/ UX and frontend part of code is funny as hell, weird and scary at the same time.

I was hired in a company for the title of Front-end Developer. I am qualified as because I have skills and experience with regards to doing front-end stuff. But it turns out that the work will be Full Stack. The employer was reasoning out that after your done with front-end task, I must do backend stuff as well so I would not be idle on may day's shift.

Is it my fault if I already done with my respective task and just mingle with random task of backend stuff that is not my real skills or forte?

I can understand and know PHP & MySQL, but I am not guaranteed to finish the task quickly compared to my backend counterpart in doing their task.

To cut the story short, they terminated my contract and claim that I am not performing well with my duties and responsibility, though most of the Front-end stuff I was assigned were already done and deployed.

There's no justice in this typical world of start-ups and noobie HR people that always one sided and they always say that it's their policy and they cannot do anything with regards to the incident happened to me.

I came across this german platform that provides rest api level access to database without the need of a backend. I’m a frontend developer and the possibilities like a wet dream. Saying bye-bye to Firestore.

I'm a backend developer who for the last year has been helping the iOS-, Android and Frontend team with rewriting their shit.

Now I got yelled at for not making any new features on the backend, and we need to ship fast. So my manager dropped all further work on our backend, since it clearly needed a rewrite, since there have been no new features which to him indicates bad code that is hard to change.

Now all the developers are rewriting their applications to fit the new backend created by some new guy, which for some reason is stuck in creating a log-aggregator from scratch instead of the actual product.

Node.js, why!? I understand that websites are built on JavaScript so we've been fucked into having to use it without a choice. But why the hell would anyone choose to use JavaScript for backend development? I just finished an interview assessment that required me to use Node.js and it sucked. Granted, I'm not a JavaScript developer, but there was nothing that made me want to go back for more.

Had our 3rd party vendor finally check their code into our github. Great.

Checking the recent commits, they only add changed .CSS files. Hmm..odd.

We use less so why did they update the compiled CSS file...? Did they forget to checkin the Less changes...?

Nope. Backend sitecore developer updated the bundled, minified CSS files and checked those in along with the fucking node_modules folder.

Didn't even know what LESS is.

The vendors PM swears the frontend developer did the changes. I don't know what's worse.

Is there any double standard such as without AngularJS you will be considered that you are terrible at AngularJS?

I once had a heated discussion with another developer over whether AngularJS is backend or frontend. For some reason he believed it's a backend framework.

I have my first developer interview next week. I'm really nervous. Its an interview for both a front end role and a php backend role, and they are hiring 9 developers.
I'm a full stack developer, dot net core backend and learning React.js frontend. My html and CSS knowledge is fine but I don't quite have a grasp of js yet. As for php, I know nothing, but the recruiter said they are looking to train someone and I explained that I enjoy learning, not to mention php is very popular so it's a good tool to have knowledge with.
I've been told to look at their site, so I've written a list of about ten aspects of the site that I like and that I would change. From the lack of interactivity to images being larger than necessary, something that could be optimised.
The interview will be an hour and a half long and I'm shitting myself. Im not a confident person as is, plus I suffer from anxiety. I'm mostly worried about being put on the spot with questions like "tell me your best achievement". I will rehearse the obvious questions this weekend.
Doss anyone have any advice? Good experiences, bad experiences etc.

front-end developer just left the job and now my boss often tells me to do front-end tasks when I am full backend guy. Worst part he does not seem to understand how difficult the switching to front-end is.

I just came out... as a senior developer. Got a promotion and that's great. But I have been a generalist software engineer so far. I do frontend, backend (which is what I'm best at), some devops, management etc etc. But as a senior dev, I'm starting to feel that I have to specialize in something. I'm the guy who can do anything, but when discussing about tech stuff the other senior devs looks more "smart" (it's only one of the small things that frustrate me). I like being generalist, but I'm starting to feel the necessity of specialzing and be a reference in some technology, contributing more to company frameworks, open source, etc.

I really hate the term fullstack developer. Just call it what it really is. Javascript react developer who dabbles in node occasionally.

If you don't have some knowledge of tuning a database, tuning your runtime, handling issues with networks and latency in your code, dealing with issues with message queues, writing abstraction layers for the database, etc. you aren't a backend developer, sorry to say.

Being able to reason about a mean stack running on digital ocean doesn't not make you proficient in the backend.

Is it possible to become a backend dev within 4 months?

I have been learning frontend on and off for a couple of years because I hate my job as a salesman. But I always imagined myself more as backend developer.

I’m currently working as a frontend developer at my company, and our designer was let go about a month ago (the second designer to be fired within six months). Today, my non-technical CEO asked me to “give some love” to our internal admin application, which was primarily developed by my backend colleagues.

My CEO doesn’t want to provide a list of requirements. He said I should use my “common sense” and joked that without it, I could be easily replaced by ChatGPT.

I know what he wants, but the joke about ChatGPT bothered me a bit.

I’d like to know your opinions on this type of conversation.

Any backend developer here that is playing Star Citizen?

The position in the company i started working for not long ago was for a dotnet developer. But it ended being heavy sharepoint focused and mostly front end javascript (that i am not very good at, that's why i wanted backend), doing stuff like hide this button, css that input etc. Really confused now and wondering how much il learn from this job considering its my first job as a developer and that i really want to do mvc with dotnet core. 😐😐 Does this have any value or i shouldn't be so picky for a first developer job?

Drupal is such a fucking wortless and infuriating hinder in software development.
I've been a software developer for the past 6 years, I have worked with many different frameworks and technologies in both backend and frontend, such as .net, react, php, you get the idea.
In my current project, we have been forced to use Drupal as backend. Initially I had no complaints, but after trying to use it for the past month, I'm beyond mad at the ridiculous and overly complicated way of doing the most basic tasks in existence.
Not only is installing Drupal such a dependency hell, that we had to modify our entire ecosystem just to accommodate for Drupal's versioning, but it's just a crutch that we have to carry around and make ridiculous exceptions for.
I've seen other projects made in Drupal by professional companies, and not a single one of them actually makes use of the CMS that is meant to be the entire point of this piece of shit.
Instead, we have to make a regular backend database, force the PHP code into Drupal's modules and then try for the impossible of making use of the pointless structure system integrated in Drupal.
It's almost pointless since we still had to make a react application to actually do the pages, since Drupal is limited as hell when it comes to personalization.
Just to end up with this error message: "The website encountered an unexpected error. Please try again later." no explanation, no nothing, just going after an endless debugging using [drush] commands.

Anyway, I fucking hate Drupal

After 30 years, some developers are still struggling to build websites efficiently. Our hypothesis is that this is due to severe and acute ignorance and due to taking an academic backend-focused software engineering mindset to the frontend without even trying to understand what web design and frontend web development has to offer and why.

I remembered in my previous job, I was a frontend Dev and there is a backend developer. There's a task where computations are needed before presenting data in the frontend. Backend Dev asked me to do the computations in the frontend instead. Well well 🤷‍♂️

I'm working in a company as fullstack developer where we use Angular for frontend, and C# for backend, lots of cool things to learn, for instance, we need a way to dynamically load forms controlled from backend, not something that is common but interesting to solve.

However, I feel sometimes I don't belong here, not because the things we do is not fun, it's just that most of the developers have very little experience with building web apps. And this means I don't develop as much as I wanted towards the web path.

I was informed before starting here, that 3 web devs would be hired including me, and they have experience with Angular. After I was hired, one guy decided to jump off (skilled web dev), and it was only me and the other guy left. The other guy has little experience with the web in general, but extremely good in terms of architecture and programming patterns in C#.

The salary is fine, but it's just I don't feel the growth I was expecting. Most of the things I learn on my own, which I've done in the past years.

I'm thinking that if I work in a place with skilled web devs, I'll learn lots of great things which I don't have to search all the time.

Not a productive day. I wanted to restore part of database from test server but downloading data using reat api was getting timeouts.

I made simple app that dumps data and I launched process in screen and started watching Dragon ball
I like those old first series with young Songo looking for his grandpa.

After about 2 hours and partial backup still not finished I started to cut crap data from backup script will finish it tomorrow.

Looks like my ux is still ok and views got almost all approved.
Need to fix some shit on backend but I need those backups to work for more complicated customers.

Luckily frontend developer is back so he will handle visual parts.

Maybe we will release new features on the beginning of February.
