A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.
-Douglas Adams1 -
I can't believe that something I threw together in an afternoon to make my work flow better turned into something people actually use! People are opening issues and suggesting things. Never thought it would get over 2.5k downloads! 😮18

Customer: I don't see why you cant just make me something like Facebook for $300 this is ridiculous

Wanted to make a python script that makes a file, deletes it, make another one with incremented title, deletes it and so on.
Fucked something up and ended up with ~20k files before ending the script few seconds later.
Gotta love the ideas you get in the middle of the night4 -
Just took apart my laptop to dust it out from the inside. Had it back together, put the battery in. "Alright, time to make sure I didn't break something"
Beep....beep beep beep....beep beep beep....beep
"FUCK I FUCKING BROKE SOMETHING WHAT DID I BREAK?"
Google Lenovo post codes (Thinkpad laptop). DIMM issue.
"Oh fuck I forgot to put the RAM back in.."
Perfect now7 -
This is a thing I love about my job. You can solve something really easily for someone through simple instructions or a simple guide and those people praise you into heaven and are so thankful.
How something so simple can make someone's day, that makes my day.4 -
Got inspired by a rant and got something to make my desk at work more green.
What should I name him/her?30 -
The best part of being a developer is being to make any tool/software you want!
Need something? Doesn't exist? Make it yourself!2 -
Client/Friend : "Hey bro, can you make something like [a popular social website]?"
Me : "Sure man, but I do need some money to pay for the hosting and other stuff"
Client/Friend : "What's a hosting?"

Make something that not only I but also others find useful, and could outlive me 🙂 there's way too much crap out there currently and I'd like to change that.1

I live outside USA

And I'm just:12 -
That moment that you need something but your skillset isn't good enough to make it and your time is too limited to learn it.
I fucking hate those moments.26 -
FrontEnd developper :
Hello here is the STATIC page you asked. Only takes 300 MB of frameworks to make it work.
Are these people on crack or something ?11 -
PM: let's make a kick-ass design for this header.
Me: *designs something with funky animations*
PM: hmm.. this is good but let's just follow how 'Reddit' does it.
Me: *WTF* 😫😫😫😫7 -
Get really motivated to make something at 1am.
Pulls out laptop, earphones go in.
Types first line of code, girlfriend wakes up, complains about the lowest screen brightness with dark theme being too bright.
Motivation killed.5 -
Everyone has something to learn and teach. Start up a blog, submit to conference proposals, etc. If you're learning it then someone else has to learn it in the future, so make it easier for them.1
-
Always make smaller commits! Easy to roll back, easy to cherry-pick, easy to debug when identifying when something went wrong.2

Make enough passive income to quit my job, live in the mountains and develop something i like without feeling guilty for not using the time to work on money yielding projects instead.9

Man, this guy is fking useless.
I'm learning something new and ask him for help; he both mishears and confuses topics, so his explanations only ever make things worse. 😧6 -
"You should always hardcode stuff, so that when the customer wants to change something, he'll pay us and we'll make it dynamic!"3

User: "If I change something and click save it overwrites my previous entry." Me: "Of course it does. To make a new entry you you have to click New Entry." User: "That doesn't make any sense." Me: *facepalm5

Developers dilemma
If I make something and someone else uses it and it breaks, its my fault.
If someone else makes something and I use it and it breaks, its my fault.1 -
The best way to learn something is to teach someone...
If you learn a framework or a language or a tool u make sure u teach it to someone it helps u understand it better and someone else is also smarter6 -
Interviewer: What was the greatest problem you encountered in life and how did you solve it?

I feel all of us here could use this brilliant quote by Douglas Adams.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.1 -

I kind of always knew that you can make the terminal background transparent. But I can't believe I never thought of this
There's something so calming about my terminals now. I just can't explain what it is :^)17 -
“One of the biggest mistakes engineers make is spending time on optimising something (a component) that shouldn’t exist in the first place” - Elon

Fuck Apple. You'd think at least a Keynote is something that they make available to the plebs, but nah, you need Safari or Edge to watch it. Fuck your fucking proprietary bullshit, you fucking elitist pieces of shit.7

Today something amazingly incredible happened, I met a nice guy on stackoverflow, he even asked me if he could edit my question to make it better, and did not reproach me for asking a RTFM question.5

Managers when a developer misses something on a project: “we need to go red fucking alert and schedule several meetings on why this developer inadequacy can never happen again and make sure to record this and make sure the stupid ass devs read all the requirements and use this mistake to offload more of our work onto the dev team”
Managers when they or any other team member misses something on a project: “oh we just made a slight woopsie, just a tiny little miss on our part, a lil fucky wucky, no need to worry”6 -
anyone else feel bullied when they put something on stack overflow for help
I'm just learning C++ for internship and they're so harsh and make me feel stupid :(11 -
Which do you think designers are tired of hearing?
"Make the logo bigger"
"Looks great but can you make it pop"
"Can you make it pretty"
"Something is missing in the design but I'm not sure what is."

"I think the first design you made was better."8 -
Mum: can you look at my phone?
*bunch of random shit pops up all over the place*
Me: your phones got a bunch of viruses on it or something. You'll have to get it fixed
Her: can't you do it? You make apps. Can't you just make an app for me to fix my phone?
Me: I don't really make apps, besides that's kind of impossible.
Her: so what did you go to university for?
Me: -___-2 -
I'm currently taking another dive into haskell. I didn't know you needed a masters degree in theoretical something to print text on stdout.

It's okay to make something nobody wants.
I wasted a lot of my life being too scared to make something out of fear. This community especially can be very toxic to people that are starting out, that aren't geniuses, that didnt make every perfect decision for their product.
Life is more enjoyable in a create-fail-learn loop than a consume-criticize-gloat loop.
I wish I'd learned that sooner.6 -
Minutes away from Ludum Dare submission closing. Finalizing game build to upload and submit and I get this...!!!
FUCK!
I'm too exhausted to give a shit at this point. Guess I'm out. Still pretty happy with what I managed to make. Had a late start, first LD and I actually managed to make something I guess XD
I'm going to bed T_T6 -
Every time I see a software development company ad on fb I have to resist the urge comment "I have a great app idea, can you make me something like fb but better?"1

When you start inspecting code of the page you are using, and you find something like this...
Not sure if I want to make this reservation anymore...1 -

Maybe getting past intermediate and actually make something people will use.2 -
Fucking frontenders…
So tired of your fucking hip things…
Always something new…
Always something ”innovative”
Fucking MB and MB and MB of images…
Make it fast you imbecils! It’s 2023!12 -
Hey... to somebody reading this, most likely.
The problem, is that you put if($var = 'something')
You need ==, not =.
Php doesn't tell you that though. It'll just change the var to 'something'
That's why you're getting that really obscure, doesn't make any sense error.
You're welcome.9 -
"We should make something just like codewars... what should we call it.?" "How about codefights?" "Perfect."4

When forced to make something in Access and VBA, the only motivation I find is naming the functions by my choice!2

My problem with a lot of free resources/class assignments is we're being forced to make useless shit. For instance, an interactive textbook we use has some stupid fucking turtle assignments.
Why not make it something relevant? One of the first things i ever made was a Fahrenheit to Celcius converter. That's a real world application, since not many can calculate that math in their head.3 -
Starting to do some work in the front end. I find it incredibly stupid that something like centering in CSS is so darn complicated that someone had to make an online tool for it. It's pretty awesome btw: http://howtocenterincss.com4

My freelance horror story just happened a few weeks ago. Programming final project was due and a classmate payed me to make his project. It was something very simple so I was able to make mine and his different and functional. Grades went up yesterday; he got an A and I got a B+ 🙃 #wk861

Here's an old Nokia phone and it doesn't have Internet on it, can you make it have Internet?

Me : I like making games,I think I will take that as my career.
Dad : *like every generic Indian Parent* Games are waste of time, use your skills to make something productive !3 -
As soon as my own projects income stabilize and outweigh my salary I’ll quit.
I haven’t even read sicp and continued to improve my dev knowledge just because I already can make something that can make me some money. So why spend health and energy polishing interview-passing skills for suits if I personally don’t need them?
World doesn’t revolve around software development.1 -
If you are selling something for a charitiy: Implement a "round up" button! Let's say someone buys something for 19$, add the possibility to round up the amount to 20$. Surprisingly a lot of people make use of it :-)2

Pffff...... Wanna make an app tomorrow...
Got no clue what to make....
Maybe something with big AI learning data machine. Yeah I think that hits all the right buzzwords :P
Any ideas you're willing to share?2 -
We all make Blue Prism the receving end of our jokes and that's actually very unfair, they even developed their own sorting algorithms, fuckYouSort, and that's something I want to acknowledge.2

just spent 2-3 hours trying to make a slideshow responsive for mobiles.
position().left returned an incorrect value breaking the whole thing. then jquery animations slowly produced a one pixel discrepancy when everything is animating based on the container width. breaking the whole thing.
Only solution has been to pretend all is fine.

What's the most complex programming task you ever had to solve? Or: A "hack"* of a framework/API you came up with to make something work?

For you front end developer out there:
How do you recommend a back end guy learn how to make something presentable? I can write HTML and CSS, but I can't seem to make anything that looks nice8 -
You make a platformer game and prototype open source and someone uses it and people assume i must be upset because they "stole" my idea. Wtf, i made it fpr the community to make something cool and thats it!3

What is up with @YouAllSuck, most of the stuff he writes, for some reason, is completely incoherent to me, i can't make sense of what he is trying so say most of the times, is he doing poetry or something?38

Why the FUCK are my project ideas so easy to implement. I wanted to make a static site sharing webpage (imagine github pages), and i fucking made it in 2 hours?????? Fuck me, does anyone know something like codewars or something but with project ideas instead of algorithms?4

Okay, friends. I have a challenge. Who can make the sneakiest memory leak example? I need to stump a class of students with something only valgrind can find and I'm having a hard time.5

Wanting to develop something yet having no idea what I want to make, nor what language to write it in, as I know almost nothing xD
Any ideas?4 -
Comitting a code is like comitting a crime,
There is a chance it will make something better, but it usually fucks everything up.1 -
I make jewelry, mostly earrings but necklaces and bracelets as well. While i sort of watch TV. Something to keep my hands busy and my mind free

So working from home today... With the heater set to low, I realized something...
Being sorta cold seems to make me more awake and productive than the warm office6 -
- Make it engaging, and avoid too much bullshit.
- Everyone should get to air their concerns, regardless of your position, everyone should have a say of the matters being discussed.
And for the love of god, compress it, don't make it unnecessary long. It's not fun to attend something that takes an hour of your working time, because time is precious and you lose time to fix shit.1 -
Our intern is leaving because school started this week and our PM said it would be nice to give him something as a parting gift:

Day 2 of devWholesome...
Have another great day! Have fun and do something productive! It is always a great feeling when you finish something that requires a lot of time and effort. Finish that project that you started but never finished, clean your room, or maybe just catch up on school work! Make sure you are also taking care of yourself with your hygiene and to eat all your meals and drink plenty of water. If you are feeling stressed today, take a break and relax! And again, make the most out of your day!4 -
Sometimes i want to erase all my programing skills to learn it all over again, it felt great when i instructed computer to do something, rather these days i'm asked to make computer do something, first hello world was nothing but that i what i wanted to do 😊
-
hey... while you're working on this big project I've given you a stupidly short deadline on... you'll be ok going to make this tiny change on something else right? it'll only take you 10 minutes...
2 hours later still doing that *tiny* change...2 -
When you've signed a contract to not build something similar to the customers product but their implementation sucks and you just want to make the world a better place. #Hooli7

I love when teachers know nothing about technology and when something closes, or in their mind “their pc breaks”, they hit a bunch of random buttons or keys and make it worse.2

> be me, working while at the beach

> what I get is picrel.
Damn true6 -
The Project Management Triangle "fast-cheap-good (pick two, you can't have all three)" is something I've never agreed with.
How would you promise to build something good & cheap?
Doing it slowly will not really make it cheaper. The cost is usually development hours. If it takes 40 hours to make a good product - doing it 2 hours per day isn't going to make it cheaper.13 -
I'm actually making something for someone now. That means I have to make sure it works in IE. Which means no ES6. I die a little inside every time I type 'var'. 😫4

I used to make batch files that would restart people's computers if they clicked on it. I would of course name it something like "DO NOT CLICK ON THIS OR SOMETHING VERY BAD WILL HAPPEN". It never failed....

Excited to start learning some backend for the first time while building a side project! First experience setting up a dB, map tile server, api, geocoder, etc. to make something completely self-hosted! 😊2

Ahhh DevRant, lemme tell you, having a girlfriend is great. Especially when she's there for you through possibly the toughest time in your life. Needless to say, I'd like to take on the incredible task of trying to show her my gratitude and love by using my programming prowess to make her something...
Unfortunately, I am stumped. I'm not much for art so I can't create Something overly visual for her, but I want it to have meaning. Any ideas folks? Seriously, what can I make my girlfriend? I need help :/6 -
Sure, client. Go ahead and add a button to your website that proclaims to do something, but then don't bother hiring a developer to make it do that thing when clicked. It'll all happen by Maaaaaagic!4
-
I have a random question. Does it make me a less of a developer if I say no to a embedded side project proposed by a friend?
I mean I'm all into side projects n building something cool but hardware and embedded stuff isn't something I like or feel passionate about.3 -
1. power - ability to decide about other people future
2. religion - ability to promise life after death
3. entertainment - ability to make people feel something
4. money - ability to enslave people
power + religion + entertainment + money = life
Probably I got no life.6 -
1) read about it
2) search * sucks and read it
3) create something decently beginner frendly
4) if it was hard find something better
5) if pretty easy make something useful1 -
Dammit I wish vscode weren't made in electron. Why can't they just make a native version or something, they own the bloody os anyway5

could lego please make this a thing? as there are several small kits available something like this would make for a nice pair programmer 😄2

Make a folder about your idea, generate a visual studio solution about it, and bam, you got something to write in your resume.1

Developer dilemma:
1) Tell people that they don't need code to get their startup idea off the ground
2) Make up an excuse to code something useless -
I made a speedcoding video and its really fun to see just how fast can you make yourself code something that works.
https://youtube.com/watch/...
Here, ill probably make more later.9 -
If your the installation instructions for your software are to clone the repo and build from source then fuck you!
I want to use the thing not tinker with it. Make it available on apt or something9 -
Would you make an effort to make something like Peacefare? An app where you feed virtually homeless people virtual food?4
-
Yo I heard you like compiling C/Cpp so we make you compile and link each individual file so you need a makefile for compiling everything. But that shit still gets to annoying to maintain so you make the make files with cmake. Just so you can compile a library basically at all.
And dont get me started on autoconf and random configure scripts you have to run before you actually configure shit.
Can we make compiling a regualr program any more difficult so that we need a whole ass A4 page of documentation just to end up with a binary of something?15 -
Same as last year, make something useful
Also: it's been a whole year since then? Where did the time go? -
Create something that will take humanity forward. Not just a utility software but make things that'll help solve the biggest problems humans as a society face - poverty, hunger, loneliness, pollution etc. All these problems are on my radar.
The idea is to use science to solve social problems. And not just stop at that. Make things that will help humans evolve into the next evolutionary phase.2 -
So, after day 3 of Rust programming I have an observation to make:
Rust package management (and conflicts that arise) is not very good.
To the rusters out there, am I wrong? Is there something to make it better?19 -
Basically I work my ass off until I have made some real progress. Knowing that I can make something useful in a tough situation gives confidence to enjoy life and try fun things during the good days.

You don't deal with low motivation..
Low motivation deals with you.

Make awesome generic function that covers any case. Get told by PM its too generic and to write something for each case >.>

Hello fellow devs, how do you clear your mind when you cant make something work? I think most of you had this feeling like 'fuck that, creating from beggining will be easier'1

Substitute teacher’s idea of a challenging class was two hours of file organisation complete with tutorial on how to make folders.
Of course I got detention because I asked for something else to do.

how do you all make something that youre unfamiliar with? i mean like something uncommon and strange that youd have to figure out. currently, i have to determine the radius of someones eyeball when the only thing i have is the distance between two eyes. how would any of you go about it? currently im just making an equation and changing values till it works.6

Getting ready to start working a little something something on the side. Client (read as uncle-in-law) wants it in Wordpress because he
1) has heard of it
2) can buy themes. I told him I can make it look any way he wants and use something else, something that I'm actually familiar with. He wants Wordpress. At least it looks like writing my own plugins to do stuff will be really easy.5 -
"Make a good version of something that already exists but has a dogshit implementation" is my current idea. And it's an idea that would be worthwhile but just plain annoying to do.1
-
!rant (kinda)
So I'm currently working on a personal project, where the concept is something, that if I wanted to, I could probably make a decent penny off of it.
The plan is to make it open source, and not charge anything for it, and when I tell this to non-dev people, they're almost shocked! Why would I not take an opportunity to make a lot of money!?
Well basically I think it's awesome to have open-source software, and I really want to "contribute to the society". And only after like 10 minutes, people start understanding my point, to just help people make something new, instead of being a greedy person, and keep it private, making it unavailable for a lot of people.
Hopefully I'm not the only one with this mindset?5 -
Finally my first app is on Play Store. But, since I don't have that much experience with the "make muh app visible" side of things. Even if I search specifically for that app nothing shows up. Am I doing something wrong or missing something?
Here's the app tho, prolly the description does not have keywords or something 🤷🏻♀️

Hey guys, I'm a noob developer (learning Java for a year now), I've come to the end of my year and I'm trying to think challenging project for myself but something that is plausible to do. I've made simple things like text editors and quiz games in the past but I would like to make something that is somewhat useful...
Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)11 -
I struggle with naming things. Projects especially and particularly if I intend to make a library in C and want to prefix the routines with something.
How do you decide on a name for your software projects?8 -
quick question: If you are writing a software to start a business around it, would you make that software (or not) open source?
I have in mind something like the Insomnia REST client by @gschier (FOSS) vs Postman (Commercial)
Thanks!14 -
Do some of you make a passive income from something dev related?
What are your experiences?
I’m thinking about starting a dev blog with focus on financial software, but it would be nice to do something that brings in some extra bugs. There are so many blogs, mine would probably not even be seen by anyone..4 -
I wanted to build a website to search for aircraft accidents, so scraped the NTSB and FAA websites and built a database out of it.
Then I went to write search fields for Make and Model. I wanted it to be easy to know if there were results for a given Make before someone tried to query by it. And then fell into the rabbithole of how to make something like that accessible.
One thing led to another and: https://github.com/amyshackles/...
Still need to add testing and better documentation and clean it up a bunch, but it’s starting to look like something, maybe. -
So, yeah...
Something like 2 years ago? I was bored in school, so I decided to make something on website that I was creating then...
I wrote few lines and sent file to the server.
BANG!
I don't know how, but I saved it as "index.php" in the root folder of website. I overwritten fucking index.php, lost this fucking file. Soo... I had two options: make index.php from the beginning, or restore backup and loose changes form 24 hours. I choosed the second option. -
Being a programmer or dev is a lot like being a chef: (I've done both)
Sure it's something anyone can just jump in on with minimal experience, and probably make a little thing that kinda looks cool to the layman, but it takes experience and hard lessons to make something that will impress the judges.4 -
It’s astounding how when a school gives me 100 dollars to make something to teach high schoolers with stem that I immediately build a lightsaber.2

(Day 1 of Database Class)
Database Prof - "Your final project is a program or app that deals with big data and showcases data analysis. Make something that can be used by consumers and has real-world application."
(After the Day of Showcasing Projects)
Database Prof -
(What he should have said on Day 1) - "Make something that makes me laugh with added data." -
There's a huge difference between cloning (flappy birds) a successful product of software and making a better version of something (instacart). It requires having creativity, talent, and a desire to truly make something great.1

To make a semi-meaningful (or really any kind of) contribution to the Linux kernel. Like just to leave something useful behind in general.2

When your friend (who doesn't know how to code) asks you to make them something for an assignment (not cs related) and they say your code is wrong 😒

The Kotlin Koans tutorials are actually really helpful. This language feels really smooth; I like it. Now to actually make something with it...2

Why would they add a reason for downvoting but no reason for upvoting? Why would they make it harder to dislike something but like something? I mean, why would they? WHY DO THE APPLICATION NEED A REASON SO THAT I COULD DOWNVOTE SOMEONE

Something I just read
"It’s hard to build a 100% secured system, the only thing you can do is to make the attacker’s job harder."5 -
How do you actually make an AI (without if statements)?
I don't need the code or anything. Just an overall idea of how AI is taught something or how it really thinks.
Any references will be appreciated9 -
I don't know if I'm mentally connected to the other developers in the world, or maybe I sleepwalk and read devRant at night while I sleep, but every time I think something someone else has posted it a few hours before.
Even something stupid like "why the left is called left hand side? Doesn't make sense"1 -
So I just started my first personal project. Decided to make a text-based rogue-lite.
Feels super good to finally make something that's "mine" 😀 -
I want to use the DevRant community for a Unit test.
Inspired by Memento, I will make a tattoo ... but ... I want it encrypted. I know nothing about encryption.
I want to make some encrypted messages and I want you guys to decrypt them.
If I'm gonna put something on my wrist for life, it should be secure11 -
Make someone create a shitload of tests for your shitty code, then don't give a shit when your commit break almost everything, finally; make the guy who wrote the tests figure your shit out.
Bonus points: Whine about something that's been broken for weeks "without you knowing" when the test suites have been saying exactly that since your commit.1 -
Im bout to start my freshmen year of college and I need money right. Then it hits me. FUCK IM A PROGRAMMER I CAN JUST MAKE SOMETHING! im retarded and genius at the same time.9

Didn't have something to do tonight, and I was kind of thinking to make a multicore brainfuckversion for a while, so tonight I implemented it. I call it multiFuck:

i am tired of the mood swings that come with being alone. whenever i make something i am proud of i realize having no one to share it with.
unfortunately i am not the hermit i would like to be.10 -
Last week I asked my manager a piggy bank where other employees could put money every time they open a ticket or make a call for something that is unnecessary, not concerning us or poorly described.
I am still waiting…3 -
That moment when you make something work which uses something you don't understand fully 😁
*feels like a hacker*2 -
I was making games for fun in C++, learnt from random internet sites, then my other half said something like "you could probably make some money doing that".
I did. -
Does anyone else here feel that TailwindCSS is ugly?
Like, I cant pinpoint it, but no matter who uses it and how, even their homepage, it lacks "something"
It doesnt make my heart flutter ya know, the way MDL2 or Fluent Design or even Google's Material3 can to some extend where I want to make something out of it
tailwind feels like licking wet paper11 -
where should I start, having something different to work on weekly, being able to work from home, alot of income possibilities, can easily start your own businesses, compared to other jobs a good community, if there isn't something you want made you can make it, and if you can think of an idea for a website or program you can make it.

2 Months ago, I started a new side project. A project to make something of all the 'left in between' side-projects. Well, I've successfully added it to the same 'left in between' list !!

Finally started summer vacation and have time to develop something, but don't know what to make. How do u get ideas?😕2

Do you always make sure to understand the basics/fundamentals of a technique/solution/tool/.. you're using ?
I don't do it all the time and I feel that it's something I should do more often (or always?).3 -
Is there an AI that generates malware already?
No sarcasm, I really wonder it there is already a model that finds exploits and makes rootkits or something.
It could make red teams obsolete.5 -
Made my first chrome extension today. That's why being able to code is great. I wished I could make something easier, and I did.

Hey all, can you guys recommend some great books on database theory and design. Something aimed towards intermediate towards advanced. It doesn't have to be sql, I just want to learn how to make a kick a#@ db.
Thanks!!!!!!!6 -
Im 22, serious question...is there a way i could make enough money to retire by 30 and live off of it until im 90? Like there has to be something if i invest in would make me not need to work anymore.18

Day 4 of devWholesome...
Lets try and do something good today! Exercise and eating healthy is important. Go for a walk with your dog today or go on the treadmill. Any amount of exercise is good for you! Make sure you are also eating healthy and eating all 3 meals of the day. Make sure you are keeping up with your hygiene and making sure your body is healthy. And as always, make the most of your day!1 -
Hey I've learnt something funny.
If I listen to music in a language I understand (spanish/english/ very little japanese), I get instantaneously distracted expecting lyrics to make sense.
My solution: listen to something I can't uderstand shit, i.e. K-Pop
Kinda funny and doesn't distracted that much haha5 -
So this is just something I'm curious of, but when following guides/tutorials how do you challenge the information you're learning? like how do you retain the information.
I typically take notes and make something different with the information but Ive just always wondered how others go about it.15 -
I have to stop this in the first place, but:
Rebuilding something that already exists as a plugin or module.
Why the fuck should I make everything from zero if there's already something working that suits all of my needs?
On the other hand, avoid abusing the usage of plugins in order to avoid demolishing performance4 -
To build wealth and create passive income that will make me finally quit my developer career. I'm passionate about being a developer but as a hobby, and not working for someone else who wants you to build something you disagree with.1

Anyone else ever not feel like explaining something technical to someone in a different non-technical department or position, so you use a lot of techy terms and make it sound really confusing so you can move on with your life?

If you ever make rating request pop up when user makes something else, I SWEAR TO GEEBUS, I'll make you regret your life choices!5

Just learnt something from reddit. The bio/data folks I work with are HARKers, they mess around blindly till they find something that kinda works then make up some bullshit to justify their approach and pretend they knew what they were doing all along.

Make time. Spend half of it to read about and try things that interests you, spend the other half to create something with it. This applies to any kind of skills.
-
I want to start another project but I have no idea what the hell to create. I was thinking of a Twitter Bot but idk what to make it do. I just want to make something.
One of the worst programming feelings is the feeling you get when you want to make something but have no inspiration or drive to even think of a good objective (whether it’s something I get hyped about or not)1 -
Get ready to launch a feature. Just about to make a pull request. Business be like, oh wait. Something came up, we need to wait a week. Fuuuuuuuuuuuck.
-
I hate weekly demos. Why not wait until something is done and ready to show, and then schedule a show an tell?
Otherwise you're just racing around to get some half-ass, not working rubbish in to make things look good. Yet it probably doesn't work at all, and is filled with technical debt that will make it to production.4 -
Started playing skyrim again (Special edition on xbox one x) and fuck me does it make me feel inadequate as a game developer...
I'll never be able to make something anywhere near as gorgeous or absorbing, *sigh* why does everything I love make me hate myself
EDIT: Please save the bethesda jokes, your opinion is noted and ignored :-35 -
Way to go Xcode, you make something as simple as a splash screen an insane headache of cOnStrAiNts
WTF is going on
fuck you -
Something that would make things so much easier would be a Chrome plug-in that spit out Selenium code while in the browser.2

What are you currently working on? You can be as vague as possible and let others try to figure it out.
I’m currently working on something to make pelican based blogs look a bit decent.7 -
Paraphrased wise words from lecture by the one and only Donald Knuth:
If you want to learn something new, don't try to learn by explaining it to another human. Make a computer do it instead because then you'll have to truly understand how something works for all cases.1 -
Hello Fam!
I need to begin with a project ASAP.
Reasons:
I wanna make something. I don't know what but I want to.
My skills: Python, Java, PHP (kick my ass on this), Minimal Frontend, Django, C++
All the skills are on the beginner and intermediate stages.
In college right now
Haven't done a single project
Need serious suggestions on how to begin to make myself a good CV and get satisfaction by making something..
Roast me. But do throw some light.
Thanks thanks thanks a lot ❤️❤️❤️❤️3 -
I make programs for a client and ask for what he wants in it specifically. I make the programs how he tells me and when I get to something I have to decide on I just come up with a nice way of doing it(in my opinion). I finish the project and show it to the client and he gets all pissy saying to change how I did something. Of course that something was something I had to decide on and he didn't tell me how to do. 😐
-
seniority perks: explain something technical, make it sound like its very easy to do and actually make devs think their dumb in the process.
moron. -
New project, make a simple change, a load of tests fail, stash changes to see if they ever passed, rerun tests: they pass ... rubbish must have been something i did. unstash changes, rerun tests to check the details: they pass ... walk away slowly
-
TMW you make something good with much efforts and dedication, and then the API gets deprecated with breaking changes.1

My family is well aware of what I do. In fact 2 of my siblings are web devs too! For my mom, she knows I make websites, but she thinks it's something I do which is really a hard thing to do.
-
Meetup.com - it's like, meat - and ketchup, so just make the branding like written in ketchup or like splatters or hamburger helper or something. "Meetup" yeah... I'm hungry! Just make it look like all the other sites and ship it!3

Does anyone know of any good resources for learning to make web apps (specifically HTML and CSS)? I'm not aiming to be a web designer, I just want to learn to make UIs for dashboards and stuff. Are there any particularly good code-alongs for something like that where they explain the caveats and gotchas?6
-
When you guys are learning something/learning to make something, are you usually looking it up, watching a video, or reading a book? Or are you trying it on your own without knowledge on how?
I tend to either learn to do something from tutorials or books. But if I feel like I have an idea I’ll try it but then hit the books or internet if not.
How do you guys tackle learning something you haven’t before?8 -
* Good salary
* Interesting work (ML in my case)

* Somewhere I can make a difference
* Doing something worthwhile (green energy/healthcare/etc)
* Freedom to try and fail4 -
I have nothing to complain, but have something to say to people who got a job: you are lucky ... Do whatever it takes to make your work done

Last year, I wasn't able to make something theorically simple with CSS3 animations and ReactJS. Last night, I made it work with VueJS (and CSS3 animations yeah). Feels. So. Fuckin. Good.3

Reading as many blogs & articles on new things as I can, if I like the look of something I'll try make a doodad with it

Is there a collaborative tool to make a project plan, with UI mockups and other designs? Not a something like issue tracker or project timeline.3

“A computer language is not just a way of getting a computer to perform operations but rather that it is a novel formal medium for expressing ideas about methodology. Thus, programs must be written for people to read, and only incidentally for machines [including the human] to execute.” (The Structure and Interpretation of a Computer Programs, 1985)

Nvidia's drivers for Linux are absolute dog shit. Like how difficult is it to make something functional? I only have 2 monitors connected but the second one is causing the driver to crash, wtf.8

I just spent like 4 hours trying to figure out how to make a simple httprequest to the google directions api in android... nothing worked :( running it in a seperate thread, tweaking the address...
I'm sure there is something simple I'm missing... but I'm feeling broken and defeated right now...
They make it look so easy on the android5 -

So with Christmas coming up my family asked me to make a list of the things I want, all of it adding up to a maximum of €25. Me being me I really don't know what I want other than that I would like something educational and programming related also something to learn machine learning would be nice
All help would be appreciated7 -
When I build something new for the first time.
A year ago I discovered PWA (progressive web apps), web workers and service workers, wanted to build something cool, I sat down at 10AM and started digesting every resource I could find, test, make mistakes, try again, then my eyes started to itch I looked at the clock it's already midnight ! -
Something like what the optgroup tag does in Excel.
Anybody?
Why is something this simple so hard to find how to make? -
i'm the only one thinking naming variable can and could be something a little bit subjective? or are everybody else can find the perfect name that make it crystal clear for any person reading it?6
-
That feeling when you’re soooo tired that you’re brain comes up with shitty programming solutions and isint able to think outside the box nor make proper functioning code, and you make something actually work and you’re surprised that like wow, I thought it wouldn’t work, ok then I guess I still got some brain juice left.1
-
Hey so I have to make something using both angular and rails and I wanna ask. After I manage to get angular running on rails, do I just proceed to build what I wanted on angular normally? Or is there a special way I have to do.
I'm learning to build something but I can't find specific guides on how to combine those to do so.
So I've found how to make it without rails. And how to link angular and rails. My plan is to learn both seperately then add. Will that work?
Sorry. My words are muddled. I'm just so tired.2 -
I just want to get a job to learn a bunch, make something cool (ideally, but prob won't be all that great in the beginning), to make a decent salary, to get my own little apartment, and support myself financially on my own. Anything more than that is a huge bonus!
-
Sometimes I record my screen to make a timelapse of my coding, it helps me stay focused, best hack of them all though? Work on something you love.1
-
The *project* build succeeded so you decided to check in your code changes. OK? WRONG! Always build *the whole solution* before checking in code! Never check in something doesn't build unless you want to make me groan *making groaning noises*

So I was stupid enough to make the same mistake for 5 times in a row within the same hour, simply the same sql query to get something from a table which doesn't exist because I didn't even run the migration.2

Make some time to work on games again. It's what got me into this field, and I'd love to point to something that I'm both proud of and is actually finished.1

- make a game
- make money off something I program
- contribute to a project
- learn and use git
- get a good schedule for programming
- use a few languages in one project
- be better than I am now
- not be so hard on myself
- publish software/website/game -
When I make a post... and there’s not a single +, I know one of three things:
Either I’m on to something big, no one saw it, or no one pushed +.
So - that makes me feel pretty good.5 -
well after solving many challenges and etc on ruby I decided today to actually use it. for real. and in my little playing it maybe become my new language, replacing python. Ruby is just great. but I don't have anything to make. I need ideas guys. or programmer friends! who wants to make something in ruby?1
-
To make something clear;
I'm not undermining you, just disagreeing with everything you are saying.
I totally recognize and respect your authority. -
Been listening to this while coding lately:
https://youtube.com/watch/...
Make me feel like some super coder guy ... dude ... bro ... something.1 -
You know when you just wanna make something but you don't know what... Feel like my brain's idea generator just won't compile.19
-
I'm disturbed at the mere thought of doing something useful, so I'm writing a webdav server. It might eventually make sense in the context of the umbrella project I'm doing to make use of the simple things I can write, but for now it's just reinventing the wheel.
-
I spend weeks working on an application for my boss just to have him make me scrap it when I'm done just because there was something wrong with design.2
-
Make something useful not everyone will utilize the thing.
Make everyone believe something absolutely necessary or give them no choice and everyone will utilize the thing.13 -
Is it advisable to add an admin page to your website so you can easily make changes like updating images etc. Or should I not bother and just modify the code whenever I want to change something?1
-
I have always thought that lazy people make the best developers. If something is too routine/type consuming/redundant, create a program/function/app that takes care of that.
Share your favorite born-out-of-laziness story.1 -
Grateful clients that weren't being an ass to begin with.
Or maybe the feeling when you make something really cool or that took a lot of work and it functions the way it's supposed too :) -
Anyone else gotten really good at the screenshot -> crop -> send to friend workflow on devRant?
Why is save image disabled? Am I missing something stupid easy here?!
@dfox Please help make this process more streamlined if this is working as intended!7 -
Make the comments of a piece of code more complex than the code itself. I don’t know how I do this, it’s like a instinct or something like that1
-
Not having ever completed a project, except for a really simple app my school asked me to do. It's like I start to make something, anything, but then I lose interest in it pretty quickly. I guess it's because I can't come up with an idea of something that I think would be really useful/fun.
-
I used to hate the tediousness of "busy work" e.g. changing labels in forms or running unit test procedures. But damn does it make the day go by quicker. I missed having something (anything) to do.
-
When i saw how by applying logic and "writing some lines of code" i could create something no short of an art piece, at least for me. Prior to that moment i've never found something i Both enjoyed and were good at (that i could make a career of, that is), so from that moment on, i just knew that mine was the path of the coder :-)
-
That feeling when you ask client something to make everything clear and just more questions appear...

What is something I can make as a hobby to learn go better? I've made software like a text editor in python, games in Java and c++, software in c, and irc bots in ruby.
Is go used for anything that I can make as a hobby? I'm not in college or out of it yet so I don't have a job as a dev either.
Thanks4 -
So I am participating in a Hackathon hosted by Microsoft. And I had to waive my IP rights for whatever submission I make. Is this something I should worry about ?1
-
Soon I will begin second year at my uni. So i have to start preparing my enginieering project. I already know what i want to do. But before i will be able to make it i need materials and tools. (I dont want money from uni cuz they will have rights to it, or so i think) my first step is to make myself a welder then make, i repeat make a lathe and a milling machine. BECAUSE I CAN. It pains me that most of the research papers are shit and practicly useles for new students so im planning on creating something that already exists but in a simple, professional way so other students can learn basics of creating something in practical world. A lot of scienctist go and push boundaries of science without caring about new people that are left alone to learn the basics. I shall correct that.1
-
Love the mobile UX of the developments I do, to make sure that I'm doing something that a user will like to use and considers it user friendly and intuitive.
-
I just look up resources, bits and pieces, and make something out of it. Usually some text adventure.
-
Work on something locally for a week. Everything works. Take a copy of the production db and run update scripts to the copy to make sure it goes smoothly. Nothing works. Damn.
-
I started when I was 8 because I wanted to make a game, and I also knew it was something I wanted as job later.
I don't know any better than that I am a developer.3 -
Man, programs were fascinating, one day when I was (I think) seven years old, I googled how to make a program, I found something called neobook (anyone else?), and the rest was history.

Hi Guys. I am new here. I have just graduated and been selected in an organisation as ABAP developer. Now I don't know the future aspects of it, as it is something new to me. What would you guys suggest me on it. Is it worth investing time? Or should I start something else in parallel and make a switch?14

Windows sticky notes are a pain in my ass. If you use them please use something better like one note. You will make the world a better place.8

We have to make something with a TTTech controller( it's for autonomous driving or for planes) in school.

FFS. Why can't I install anything the simple way ? Every time I want to install something, I've got unknown weird errors. This shit just make me want to quit1

Entity Component Systems suck major ass. Atleast all the implementations I've seen
But I already have a few good ideas to make something actually usable (and way more flexible and way faster) -
Github actions are so complicated, why they don't set up something like a simulator. I keep pushing my updates everytime I make changes to my yml file only to know it errors.1

When should I develop a website myself using whatever the hot framework currently is and when should I just use something like a cms because it is too complex for only one developer to make the website3

All you have to do to be a successful internet business / is to make something that isn’t insanely fucking terrible in every way... or make something insanely terrible... but have so much money and coverage and control that there is really no way to fail.
And of course / option 2 requires a bunch of mindless developers with no regard for what their creations do to the world.4 -
Hey, make a whole tracking interface, that's at least a month's worth of work, for something that R&D is actively working towards making obsolete in 3 weeks.

What would be the best way to basically make a "visual poll" that takes clicks from users and calculates a "final score" for a website.
I've never really done something like this before...4 -
Does something like this exist in the NodeJS ecosystem:
- Reads js-based ORM model definitions (e.g. ones defined by sequelize.define())
- Syncs the database's tables with said model definitions without using migrations
I've built something like this and it seems revolutionary, but I wanna make sure I'm not reinventing the wheel.4 -
Why the fucking apple take so much time to make app online in App Store? I am loosing my mind literally.
Learn something from Google. -
I hate it when implementation takes less time than business analysis. If you cannot refine requirements after years of discussions, make Earth a favour and shoot yourselves. Do not force me to implement something that you will probably never use.

Any ideas will be appreciated. Thank you :)7 -
How to make attractive immersive web pages design
I do not want to make it on my own, else need something like TailwindCSS or Bootstrap

Why the hell do clients are so confused all the time. Each time we make them understand something, clarify things they come up with something completely out of the world and starts crying as to how will this help us and how will this work? Sometimes I feel like the clients have gone completely batshit crazy.3
