I am working on an app which tells your family if you are working right now or not. So in case they want to call you.

I know a lot of you already know/do this, but to those of you who don't - I know it has saved me more than once:

If you use SSMS (SQL Server Management Studio) - when connecting to a server, before you hit the "connect" button, under options, choose a color to represent which server you are connecting to. I personally use stoplight colors: red = prod, yellow = QA, green = dev....this way, it helps you realize what server you are connected to, minimizing our dreaded "oh shit" moments....lol

I'm working on this super fun project in which we can combine the newest technologies, and some not so new but fun to use, we are doing it with docker, ASP.Net core, Angular2, and suddenly the system maintenance guy from the client sends us an email like:

I vote Java. It's lack of creature comforts like operator overloading and it's verbose and strict nature are in direct contrast with the free-form nature of the web. At least C# lets you do some crazy stuff.

The market is over saturated with developers. There are plenty of other spaces in which you can work with computers and code.

Think: system administration, cyber sec (which also pays higher in a lot of places compared to development since resource security is a priority), networking etc.

I already know js, html, php and css quite well (enough to become a tutor at my university) but I'm not shure which frameworks (serverside and clientside) are worth considering. Until now I wrote everything from scratch, which is not very sustainable (waaaay to much code to maintain)

I wanna rewrite a small php site with a microframework. So far, I've found Silex and Lumen an interesting choice, but I can't decide which one to go with, since both are new to me. Though I'm using Symfony a lot and haven't use Laravel yet and these micro ones are their lite editions, I'd choose Silex but Lumen seems better at first glance, so I'm uncertain. Which one do you suggest?

I love when there is a 30 page quick start guide from which there are 4 usefull ones, which can be summed up into: find this hidden subsection in our app, click it, and click next 5 times(each beeing explained in multiple pages). After this you are done.

But you aren't because that thing just doesn't show up, so you go through google, so, the official faq and finally you just arrive into a trubleshooting guide, where int the 300 possible problems yours is not mentioned.

And after spending half a day on this, in a hidden bugreport you find, that this just doesn't work.

Testing out VR without your own VR equipment is a pain.
The glasses are not much of a problem, since you can first develop using the google cardboard SDK and test it with your phone.

It's the controllers that are a pain to test. Luckily vrtk made something that simulates the controllers, which can be controlled with the keyboard.

The controls are very uncomfortable, this is not their fault; you can't really emulate movement easily with a keyboard.

My mentor to me when I joined the job fresh out of college (in a somewhat dramatic tone, which is why I remember it so vividly):
"Gone are the days when you wrote programs with a small number of big functions, and lots of comments. Write code which is easy to read by humans - small functions which do 1 thing and are named after the 1 thing it does."
