So, recently, a person in the US was arrested for stalking people.
The evidence was some data from google, a work computer and from a VPN provider.
Let's take a quick look at that VPN provider. It (PureVPN) says on their privacy policy page that they do NOT store logs.
Guess from what VPN provider the FBI got those logs? Yes, PureVPN!
Althouh I'm happy they got this creep off the street, it still means that PureVPN has been lying to its entire customer base.
I personally hope that their reputation will be destroyed now because this should never happen.
A screenshot I took from their privacy policy page is attached below.
Keep your eyes open when choosing a VPN provider!57 -
Every fkn 3 to 4 days, some random dev shows up in my office really really fkn confused and frustrated about something he doesn't understand - because I have a dark secret.
Sometime, in cold lonely nights, when no one is watching, I write my documentation before the actual code.
Somehow, sometimes documentation without code attached to it makes it to production.
Today someone yelled at me for wasting his time because he wasted 3 hours trying to find the code the documentation belongs to - and demented I stop the practice from now on.
Agh.13 -
Client has asked me to sign an NDA. They've emailed me the NDA and asked that I print two copies of it, one which I must sign and return to them, and the other to keep for myself. Because I'm to print it twice, they've attached two copies of the NDA in PDF form. They're identical, I've checked.4

How reading E-Mail is hard:
Me:
"Dear client,
please send the pictures for content A and Content B.
We also found content C in your spreadsheet. Do you want content C to be uploaded? Please us where to place it.
Regards
Me (who does not consider this a difficult text)
"
Client:
"Hello. Please find attached the pictures for A"
Me:
"Dear Client,
Thank you for the pictures for A.
What about the pictures for B?
And what about that content for C?
"
Client:
(no answer)
Desperate Me:
(Looking at the attachment and finding pictures for A and B)
!!@**! :(
Reluctant Me:
"Dear Client,
Please look at the new iteration <here/>
And by the way.. what about that content C?"
Client:
"Thanks and find the images for Content C attached."
Extremely fatalistic and desolate Me:
"Well thank you. Where shall we put it then?"
Client (answer to the unanswered mail above)
"Thank you. Please don't forget to put in C."

I've written a lot of bad code, seen a lot, but attached is the most recent 'worst' I've seen.
What makes the situation worse/funny is:
1. The developer's code comment.
2. Check-in passed a code review.
3. The 'legacy code' was written last week.29 -

*burp* Me..Merry Christmas
I made a thing. It's called Claymore.
It's like lastPass, but with a bomb attached to it.
Its *burp* like, if you're like really paranoid about your passwords, you can just, you can just blow it all up.
Pro-Tip, if you run it on port 1337, it's extra sec-*burp*-ure.
Am I kidding? Maybe. I made this w/ booze, so.10 -
Just got a message from a recruiter that contained this sentence: "I have the JS attached for your review". Took me a while to realise JS meant job specification and not JavaScript (which is required for the role).1

My boss caught me out the other day. He asked which browser do we test on. In our documentation it's ff chrome and ie10. In reality it's not ie.

Boss: so, this client A has a problem with one of our devices and he believes that it's a bug in the software.
Me: all right then, what happens?
Boss: well, he says that the parameter P in the option menu does not changes the device's behaviour as it is supposed to. I'll forward you his mail. You will find attached an excell file with the results of his test performed with and without the parameter active.
Me: < read mail, read excell file > well, boss, his tests are performed in completely different conditions, how could he expect to infer a meaningful results from this?
Boss: damn, you are right. Send him a test plan and follow up.
Me: < send detailed test plan >
No answer in a week. Then...
Client: hi, there, I made this tests, I attached the excell with the results, can you check the software now?
Me: < read another bullshit filled excell file with none of the suggested test performed >
You know what? Just download the procedures you are using from the device and send them by mail, specifying the software version you are using so we can perform some tests here in the lab and get yo a solution asap.
No response. For a MONTH.
Super Boss: client A still has his problem, how could possibly be that it takes more than A FUCKING MONTH to solve his issue??

My favorite IT story (not mine) is that the server needed to be rebooted whenever it froze completely. The best solution? Get an old PC that had a CD drive, and every time it loses connection to the server, eject the CD tray which had a poking stick attached that hits the reset button.3

Just a heads up since sometimes these things get missed on new devRant version releases: you can now download images attached to rants by tapping on the "share" icon on the top right of a rant and then selecting "save image". The image will be saved into the gallery on your device.
We've also improved Facebook and Twitter sharing.

I fucking hate working remote jobs.
Currently in Turkey running absolutely shit internet speeds.
Speed is around 0.31 Mbps down and 3.29 Mbps up, ping is around 141ms according to speedtest.net.
It took about 15 minutes to get a test of the speed working.
Stability is about the same as that of the country.
Please take me back to Denmark and my amazing 150/150 connection.
Only one upside: see attached14 -
Upon suggestion of @platypus I went to the cafe and just took my tablet there (unfucking the laptop's rootfs flash drive took too long, and ArduinoDroid's avrdude didn't seem to work very well), so just doing some chatting in IRC and trying to figure out how the hell I'm supposed to make a serial link to a Proxmox VM from the host (thinkstation on the top left pane).
Attached below is the screenshot of that.. much turminel, very h3xx0r! But so far nobody has come up to me calling me "evul h3xx0r" yet.. very intriguing! I expected things to be much worse.
A glass of Duvel in front of me, tastes great! Cheers!11 -

So instead of 15 tech-stickers from china, I got 33 rick and morty stickers and actually am not mad, because now I can finally make proper use of my devrant stickers I got a long time ago
the dead morty isn't yet attached to it, because I might get other stickers, that could need space (tiny laptops do make you picky), so I'd slap him on somewhere else or inbetween, that's also the first time I have actually ever put any stickers on my laptops12 -

QA: it's just a random file that gets attached. Can you fix it by the end of the sprint(tomorrow)?
Me: I need to investigate it a bit before I can tell you how long it will take, how can I reproduce it?
QA: idk, it was just there.

Me: I've tried to cause the 'issue' on my local server, the test server and the live server. But I haven't seen it and I have no clue what could cause it.

I recently got mailed by our support department.
A customer using my program experienced performance issues after updating the whole system; attached is a video recorded by the customer clearly showing the difference.
I watched the video: the old version took 20 seconds to load. The new version 26. After querying the data, it's shown in a list.
The updated version showed 61 datasets instead of 6 in the old version.
I asked the supporter if he even watched the video and he answered: sure, and I'm able to see the performance issue!2 -
So, privacy aware dutchies of devRant.
I was waiting for a friend at Utrecht central Station and saw this sticker (image attached).
Basically, by walking in the building with your wifi and / or Bluetooth active, you're giving them consent to track you.
They use the tracking to see where passengers wait for their train and what the popular routes are.
I thought you should know.

> Monitoring: Load Average of 57!! ALERT!!!!
> me: What? That's not possible?

The issue was ~1200 df processes that were issued by our monitoring system and all of them didn't finish because the external cluster we mounted onto that server died a few minutes before that. Just re-mounting the cluster fixed it but still a funny sight!24 -
Finally, the jeezless present is done.. fuck this shit, where's my booze and my bed?! 😒
Anyway, it's essentially a power bank with LED's attached to it. The LED matrix is at the back side and looks reasonably decent (but I don't wanna disclose the age it's displaying). It's powered through a 47ohm resistor and is directly attached to the 5V lines. Yellow LED's with 2V voltage drop that have each number completely parallelized, and then those numbers are put in series to increase the combined forward voltage of the LED's to 4V. That way the circuit is around 80% efficient (resistor drops 1V, LED's drop the remaining 4V). Other than that, nothing too special. It did take 2 nights to build though.. way too much for a mere formality 😑13 -

Inappropriate experience at work? Here is another one:
The IS department manager 'John' bought a blowgun and was shooting at a box down the cubical farm hallway. Only a little annoying to hear him puff on the tube, but then someone walked out their cube and almost got hit.
Dev: "Dammit John! What the hell are you doing?!"
John: "Maybe you should pay the hell attention to where you're going. You heard what I was doing. Don't be a baby, those darts wouldn't have hurt you anyway."
I've attached a pic of what the darts looked like.4 -

I once wrote a room planning application on unity, to allow people in my company to book meetings using tablets attached to the room doors.
Turns out the c# Datetime object unity uses was highly localized and therefore had a different formats on each different device.
I saved those timestamps into a SQL database and eventually all devices crashed due to having some Datetime format they could not parse.
Had to fully bypass the datetime and reinvent it essentially and had to reset the database.
I think it's needless to say I'm not particularly good in dating.4 -

We have a portal which uses Windows Integrated auth that lists out all off our internal sites.
Navigating to any of these produces a URL like the one in the attached image.
Turns out all our internal application use a base64 encoded email address in the query string as the means of authentication.
So, anyone can authenticate themselves as another employee within the company by simply changing the query param value to said employees email address.

In the past, we used skype, hipchat, slack and now ... Microsoft Teams. What a tool.
Yes Teams, it makes total sense to tell me that my message is too long. I totally get it that you want me to rewrite my message and yes Teams, I should have rather attached it as a file to my message to begin with. Yes Teams, I wait for you to finish uploading those files before I can send the message. I'm sure there would be disastrous consequences if you send the message with my attached files as soon as you finished uploading. I don't even want to be productive. Thanks for helping me out.6 -
I had a client that used to send emails to detail requests or report bugs on a software.
Now, believe it or not, this was the regular way:
An email with just an introduction and a Word document attached, containing very verbose descriptions (usually not in a human known language) and most importantly, screenshots.
What's so weird about this? Those pictures were captured with printscreen, printed on paper, scanned and then inserted inside the doc 😭😭
Why all this? I don't know, otherwise I wouldn't have posted it as #wk32 ☺3 -

Oh my God...
A colleague of mine got an email. The email was badly translated into our language (probably Google translate was used) it said 'please open invoice attached'.
The anti-virus software successfully marked it as a virus, and did not allow my colleague to open attached 'invoice.exe' file.
Now by this point you would think that the person would just delete the email, but no. The colleague looked at me, and with the bitchiest voice said 'I got an invoice and can't open it after your anti-virus installation. Fix it!'
Needless to say, I had to explain, what a virus is and teach all the colleagues not to get hooked on scam mail... Took about 4 hours to explain this seemingly simple concept.
Fuck knows, how they did not nuke their IT infrastructure before I came here :/11 -
I'm resignating from Arch, Ive used it this week for a school project and as a linux newb- I cant do a lot. I have no clue how to print stuff, where to find my connected networks or how to connect to them etc. I like what it offers and I know it can be good but I'm too new to all of this to effectively use it. BUT I'm not giving up, I'll try Manjaro next as I read that it's newb friendly and I really like how it looks.
Also attached an screen of my Arch setup: i3gaps, plasma and whatnot8 -

suddenly, this big horrific reptile like head with red eyes appeared over the fence, and i screamed in fright, to which a giant fucking bird ran away several feet.
motherfuckers had a goddamn emu in with the goats !!4 -

When you look through your team’s custom protocols to figure out which one you need, and someone has not only made a massive typo, they then DOUBLED DOWN on the typo and made a bunch of dependencies based on that typo.
As in, the word “downloadable” spelled three completely different ways, and EACH ONE is treated like a different class with its own attached dependencies.
AND THE COMMIT MESSAGE ATTACHED IS “lots of cool stuff.” HOW IS THAT A COMMIT MESSAGE? WHICH ONE DO I USE?!

I submitted a security report some days ago.
It is well written, it explains what is happening and what is the impact providing an example. I give some advice about how to handle this situation, it's about concurrency issues and it's pretty tricky to debug.
Answer from the reviewer:
"Please, can you tell me what are the implications?"
...
...
FUCK.
IT'S LITERALLY FUCKING WRITTEN,
CAN U EVEN READ IT?
THERE ARE PICTURES DESCRIBING THE ISSUE, I EVEN ATTACHED A FILE YOU CAN USE TO DEBUG.

This is the last time I report vulnerabilities.3 -

Just got a basic HTML parser written in c++. Uses state machines. Should be pretty efficient considering the lack of backtracking or looking forwards. Still lacks a bunch of features, but works, so I am pretty darn stoked.
Pic attached is output, not input. I also wrote an HTML pretty-printer.18 -
So my client had a simple request a few days ago.
It read: "can you update the bottom middle image on the about page grid to the attached image".
There were two issues with that that my client cannot seem to comprehend - even after I have emailed them clearly explaining the issues.
The about grid is 4 x 4. Not sure how they expect me to update the "middle image" in a 4 column row, but alas.
The second issue was a little clearer. The attachment they mentioned wasn't an image. It was an empty .txt file.
2 consecutive fails right there :)2 -
So our new teacher executes console applications (C#, .NET) with the VS debugger attached (F5) instead of just letting it execute normally (CTRL + F5).
He complained about the output not showing up (he still gave me full score at least) That's because executing with F5 simply ends the program after Main() is done executing, while CTRL + F5 leaves the window open until you press a key, saying "Press any key..."
So here's what I'm gonna put at the very bottom of Main() in future:
if (System.Diagnostics.Debugger.IsAttached)
{
Console.CursorVisible = false;
Console.WriteLine("Press any key...");
Console.ReadKey(true);

As a guy who hates touching anything attached to the name "JavaScript"... Vue is pretty cool. I kind of like it. I suddenly don't hate building a website. I don't recognize myself in the mirror anymore.6

Wow, I think I might be closer to done than I thought I would be!
Double buffered console library, works cross-platform with support for color! Color was a challenge because of the differences between Linux and Windows but I think my solution was okay!
The only thing I have left is reading input and I don't think that's going to be terribly hard! Then, I'm gonna bind it to Lua and make really cool console applications like a portable console notepad lol.

My slacker coworker attached a spoon to his monitor serving as a rear view mirror, so that he knows when somebody is standing behind him and can see his screen, which allows him to better slack off the whole day.
He's sick today (he often is), and I am looking for a nice prank idea, ideally involving this spoon. I thought of rubbing a piece of butter against it to make it murky and greasy, or maybe attach a photo of our boss to it.
But I need a better idea, so please comment! Thank you, much appreciated!26 -
Oh sweet mother of god.
What is the NBN Connection i have attached to my router?

I think devRant could maybe have some kind of mascot or superhero!
I scribbled this guy attached here as an idea, but as others have brought up, we could also have a super duck (like the devRant cape duck but more special)!9 -
I don't know if anyone else here uses kik but there's something that's been bugging me for a while
Occasionally (frequently) bots start a conversation with you (the typical "come visit my porn website etc etc), right? Now, this has happened to me at least 20 times now, and EVERY single time, the bot's profile picture has loads of translucent yellow stars edited in, and I have no idea why
I can't think of a possible explanation for this, and I've put a lot of thought into it
Attached is a cropped version of what I mean19 -
Sorry for the excess of blury.
Coworker thinks running a query on a console is a way to proof all use-cases.
Good lord I'm still surprised at how many bugs I can spot just by overlooking his code.
I mean, what is a MVC?!!SHIFT+1!!!?
Routing is just a file importing a 5000 liner controller that is actually not a controller for it handles http attributes and sends the response themselves.
Models are just good guesses of queries or a shit load of them: see picture attached

This is something I think about a lot. Value of Licenses in open source! As long as it is open source people don't seem to care much about the license attached to it.
There is this portfolio a girl desiged and created herself and made it open source. And she clearly states that she spent hours of time designing it so if you use this then do make sure give credit in the footer saying she designed it. Then I see a lot of people using her repo as their own with zero credit to her. That's just awful.29 -
Fuck M.2 and mSATA SSD's. Not only do you have to worry about lengths (30, 42, 80mm), but then there's mSATA vs M.2... Where SSD's with an M.2 connector can STILL use mSATA internally! AND on top of that there's a bazillion connector types. For that I'll let the attached image speak for itself. I don't see the difference to be honest. Maybe someone in the comments can explain.
Long story short, I bought what looks to be an M.2 SSD that nonetheless uses mSATA and I pretty much wasted my money on a paperweight. The little enclosure I bought for it only does mSATA *connectors*. It doesn't fucking fit!17 -
At a workplace I was attached to, a colleague of mine taught and still teaches Actionscript 2/3.
She rambles about how coding is important to a modern career, while teaching students how to animate a circle. Management can't fire her because of a poorly drafted contract.
Worst of all, she refuses to update her skillset.3 -

Cisco.
It’s a prime example of “Don’t get attached to the company just because of one thing.” I have three of their routers that I bought used. WRT160N, WRT310N, and WRT610N. They all looked aesthetically pleasing and I thought all would be fine and dandy. Until I got a internet boost. Going from 12/1.5 up/down to 250/25 up/down.
HOWEVER, MY ROUTERS CANNOT REACH EVEN HALF THE SPEED DOWN.
Best part was when I called, they said that they couldn’t fix it because of one thing that all the routers have in common.
Legacy.
I’ve tried dd-wrt all with no luck. And they have the audacity to recommend another product of theirs?!?17 -

Spent 5 hours working on a solution for a hash difficulty comparison/scaling algorithm. after a bunch of different iterations and approaches, I find that my problem can be solved by the attached equation. Its such a simple answer but no way in hell would you be able to discern the amount of time and brainpower that was put into it. The git commit is literally 10 lines of code total, but I guess its not about the amount of code, but the time spent thinking about it thay counts?6

Today I found a critical bug to our software and wrote a fix and tested it locally.
Common sense would dictate that especially when it is critical you test said fix on a real release and not with a debugger attached and running onna different device altogether.
I was denied this request because the afflicted machines engineer would not be able to finish the machine before the factory acceptence test.
I stood there with glassed over eyes for a second and then to no avail tried to explain that without this fix he wouldnt even pass the internal acceptance test......12 -

So Minecraft Dunegons launched today.
Not my style of game, but I did purchase hero edition because fuck, the price is LOW given the IP attached and the fact that it was developed by Mojang. $20 for the full game and $30 for full game + extras? Incredibly refreshing in a market where $60 is standard for full game, and up to $75-80 for extras (like "I paid too much money" skins and such. I got a chicken pet and promise of two upcoming DLC with my extra $10)
Anyways I was happy with the price of a game for once and wanted to share!4 -

Going through site after senior dev asked front end dev to go through it and tweak it for design and better responsiveness(he and I are back end oriented and have no design skillz).
Things are breaking visually on almost all devices.
Client sends an email saying it suddenly looks terrible on mobile and wants to know what happened. I let him know we were actively working on things and it should be good in a few minutes.

The scrum master for the project I'm working on decided to help out with changing some code (I'll add he's got a master's in software engineering and very proud about it..aka..big ego). It took him two days...yes two days to write the attached code.
I reviewed his code and sent back a response (code took about 15 seconds to write) including the link to the logging documentation explaining what fields were and were not necessary. Not sure how will look in devrant ...

An old client came back to me stating that I didn't fix the last change he requested a month ago. I went in old emails, found out what he needed, tried the website, it was doing exactly what he wanted.
I wrote to him with confusion asking what was he wanted me to fix.
"It's not working"
"It is"
"No, it's not. Can't you see?"
I attached old email conversations and sent him to see for himself.
"I am not talking about that." I want it to work like this, like that, blah blah blah.

I just wasted 2 hours trying to figure out why the properties of a destructured object returned undefined, even though everything was fine in JSON format. Tried to request data on the frontend from my server with a database attached. Tried accessing each object of my array separately, it worked. In a loop: dataArray[index].propertyX ... undefined??
Turns out I used the wrong property names to access the info inside each object.

As the saying goes "beggars can't be choosers" and I need to get a job.
I got approached by a recruiter in LinkedIn who had attached a PDF brochure.
It seems OKish, but the only part that worries me is "step 3" of recruitment process:
"Invitation to France and have a face-to-face technical interview and meet the team."
Will I be out of bounds if I ask the technical interview (if I ever make it that far) take place into Skype?
There are some savings, but going to France (somewhere between Cannes and Nice in summer period!!!) just for an interview that I might fail is a big gambit for me.8 -

aaaaaghh fucking Handlers man. Android is so fucking full of shit, i wonder why am i still doing it. love is pain.
Why can't there be one mother fucking solution to all lazy ass asynchronous programming? handlers, threadpools, asynctask, executers, Broadcasts, intentService, coroutines, rxjava,.... i don't what new stuff are people snorting these days.
Ok , leave everything. A handler is class- no sorry, Handler, alongside some fucking Looper clss (and maybe some more stuff i don't know) other classes is a way of handling inter thread communication. Handlers can:
-send data to ui thread
-recieve data from ui thread
-send "messages" to ui thread
-recieve "messages" from ui thread.
- can be attached to ui thread
- can be attached to any child thread
- can be accessed anonymosly via any view
- can be present in multiple places, working together
- can kill night king with a dagger
- can do porn better than johnny sins
- can run for president of the whole fucking world
- do some more shits that i have yet to discover
And where do i find this? buried deep insides some medium articles or in some guy's horrible accent video.
Is background processing really this much of a toughnut to crack?
earlier i was all about using asynctask or foreground/background services, because these are the most easy to understand abstraction of a fairly difficult topic.
But as i see more projects, i see underlying apis like handlers, threadpools , executers , being directly used.
Why cant there be a fucking single abstraction, that could be "lightly tweaked" to handle every ugly case.6 -
All I wanted to do was to create a quick cordova/phonegap app that uses external plugins - so I can't just preview it.

Just got access to OpenAI beta. This thing is seriously impressive. The attached image shows it summarizing a paragraph from Friedrich Nietzsche. Apart from that, I have tried summarizing a complex Math Algo which I found on Wikipedia, getting specs for building a new PC, and also improving my Startup Idea. The results were astonishing. I can't imagine what possibilities it can have in the future.
At the same time, I can clearly see why they are not allowing open access to their APIs. The potential for abuse is so high here. Especially when most of our population is full of digital idiots. -

Python Question:
I'm learning Python and thought I'd start with web services since that's a concept I'm familiar with. My question is, in the attached code, am I doing it right when it comes to python? Cuz I feel like I'm following the same structure I follow in C# WebAPI and NodeJs
What about naming style? Is is the default for python? cuz I'm also using C# naming style :\

Debugging an elusive database query problem. Attached to server process about 10 steps into the call stack trying to figure out why a a column value is not being properly cast. In comes Windows. You picked the most inappropriate time to restart for updates without asking me. Restart VM, authenticate with VPN, wait for 2FA, start up Visual Studio, enter credentials for the millionth time to authenticate with version control since the remember me checkbox doesn't work, open solution. Now where was I? Then Windows pops up a notification to inform me the updates couldn't be installed. The following comic strip comes to mind.

From my experience you can't really avoid bad companies with 100% success ratio. You can pay attention to the surroundings during an interview, you can research the company online, but in the end whether the company is good or bad is a purely subjective feeling. I think the most important thing is to make sure you don't get too attached to the company either emotionally or legally, so you can just gtfo when you decide it's not right for you.2

`xdg-open` on Linux is fucked up. The thing never works properly for me.
In the attached screenshot below, you can see that `feh` is the default application for opening jpg files, however, it always opens the file in the browser. It doesn't work for any other filetypes as well. It's just messed up.
By the way, I tried to do some debugging on the line number xdg-open reports. It calls this bash line: `"$command_exec" "$@"`, however, when I echo the command, it prints nothing. So this means it can't find the program to open the file with and, at the same time, it reports that the program is set as you can see in the screenshot!!3 -

Our Joomla-based site just got a redesign. The developer who did it did something wrong. Articles no longer are attached to their parent categories and are now all referenced at the root level in URLs.
I pulled up the 404 log and now see that some website or bot or whatever is hitting up each category for each article, which screws with our SEO 404 report in Google Search Console.
Which means I have to find a way to programmatically redirect every article within every category "up" a level to the root where each article is now found.
And I have no way of knowing which article belongs to which category anymore. Even if I did, a test shows that articles attached to categories still want to come up at the root level, not in their categories.

I just bumped into a javascript problem that exceeds the stupidity of previous ones:
Because promises can be retained after they settle, and handlers attached thereafter are pushed on the microtask queue, a promise rejection can't be asserted to be unhandled until the promise in question is GC'd.
Of course this is nuts so engines will conclude that a promise rejection is unhandled if there are no handlers at the moment of rejection.
I hate this language.10 -

That mantra is about to be thoroughly tested - we might be just about to trash one year worth of work coz the 3rd party we were working with doesn't look like they'll be able handle our load2 -
User having a problem with a page in a web application : -...I'm attaching a screenshot of what it looks like.
Me: - Some scripts seem to be cached so you might need to reload the page.
User: - Now that I reloaded the page for the third time it seems to work. Then I tried another case and then it gives me the same response as in the previously attached screenshot.
Me: - Was it in a separate Firefox window?
User: - What do you mean by a separate Firefox Window?

Code is a highly detailed description of what a computer should do. If that description becomes inaccurate we will remove inaccurate parts. Take pride in writing good code, recognize that it was useful for a while, but don’t get attached to it. It will stay in the git history.

So, was testing a classic Mac an old friend sent over and realized an interesting convergence had occurred in my office.
In the attached shot you can see the following:
Center: A Macintosh LC III - effectively the last of the 68k Mac line
Right: A PowerMac G5 - one of the old cheese graters, and the last major release of the PowerPC line
Left, under the monitor: A 2020 Mac Mini - effectively the end of the Intel Mac line
The LC III gives a startup chime, but I wasn't able to get a video signal out of it using the Apple-to-VGA adapter I was using. Otherwise I'd be posting a shot with all 3 up and running.2 -
I work in a company and they asked me to develop the official website, jointly a colleague. The boss gave us an horrible background, he says that he likes it. My collegaus designed a hideous navbar, so I drew a new navbar (still horrible but better) and I sent it to him. He said that his one is perfect and we don't have enough time to implement the mine. And in all this I'm (maybe) a webmaster, not a graphic designer. In the attached pic, my navbar is the below one1

FUCKING WHY ME!
Lost my dedicated internet access due to a SHITSTAIN of an ISP TELIA decided to introduce itself to my connection A SECOND FUCKING TIME in the past YEAR.
Suddenly lost internet and my firewall couldn't figure out that it was supposed to lose all its fucking connections and renew it's IP adress.
Now im connected to this fucking hipe of shit that is the biggest giver of their customers information to anyone who asks, "Hey man, whats the dude who has this IP?, - sure fam, here you go"
Now i probably have some poor motherfuckers name attached to my current IP.
But could you say that i am now untraceable?4 -
Today I have created a server application on Python Tornado which can forward TCP Packets directly to HTTP request queue without any intermediate caching.
Our remote IOT devices (microcontrollers with sensors attached) send sensor reading over TCP Socket to our server and all the connected web applications can show the data instantly using long polling and the above mentioned technique.1 -
Monday morning: "Hey uuuh the client receives 3 mails instead of one and only one of them is good, there's a problem, go fix it"
Yesterday, me: - "Hey I've been looking everywhere, made hundreds of tests, there's a problem with the files attached to the mail, they're unreadable"
-" I told you it's in the code, you didn't look deep enough"
This evening: "Umm it seems that there's indeed a permission issue. So I'm gonna rollback everything you've done since Monday"
One year. One year and I live this hell. -

No logical playlist sorting by alphabet

Absolutely no sorting options by any attribute
No continue listening on another device
No song search ability in playlists (Excuse me but what the fuck?)
SS attached shows how playlist goes from W -> Y -> axbyz2 -

Today I receive the email with the info I need. Email is cc'ed to the client. And it starts with complaining about me not having implemented the science stuff. The info I need is attached in this email. Arghgh, how am I supposed to do that if I don't have the information I need.

Holiday in 6 days, wohoo. 3weeks in Thailand. So ready for it.
Currently working on a huge real estate website. Design got approved yesterday, yesterday I finally got partial access to the clients real estate data. Where the data is uploaded to our server as zip files containing a xml file and files attached to it.
Deadline is tomorrow, but has been pushed back 2-3 weeks, which sucks as I probably have to work whilst on vacation4 -

OK, I know the general consensus of StackOverflow on DevRant...but jesus h christ...do devs not debug their own shit anymore? (TL;DR at bottom)
Does anyone else feel that modern GUI's or webpages or anything thats 2-D and modernized, just seem to contain 10x less data that old interfaces.
Disclaimer: First time uploading picture, idk how it will go)
Let's say Google's Inbox, compared to the old Gmail interface... (In attached picture)
I am the only one annoyed by this?
I really like the look and everything and I love modern designs, but please please, keep the functionality there. I just feel like there is 10x less options to do when I see a system converted to a new modernized design. Even YouTube look ugly now, that I am convinced there are about 10 buttons less under each video.
(New <-> Old in attached picture)
Thinking objectively, all of the buttons are still there, but from other experiences, I just always get discouraged when I see a product with a minimalistic design, and am immediately turned away from it, expecting that I wont have any sort of ability to customize my settings.
If you say that fancier GUI's take too much work to make all he settings, the fucking don't make a modern GUI... I want something I can tailor to my needs... There is always a good line in between, just like "old" youtube's design...
Maybe thats why I hated LastPass with it's fancy GUI's and instead preferred KeePass for my passwords...
As promised:
TL;DR
Anyone else hate modern GUI's since they usually lack features?3 -
I bought medion md 19500 vacuum cleaner refurbished for about 74 usd, it can be controlled using ir remote
I disconnected vacuum top and it’s still working so my plan is to use arduino instead of attached remote to control robot
I can try to identify where ir sensor is to directly connect to it, but don’t know if my skills are enough to do it.
edit:
to compare, roomba create 3 costs 450$ and I can buy this vacuum used without remote for 38 usd24 -
I started with a UI automation scripting language AutoIt (back in ~2005, I was 12 years old then). You can call methods like MouseMove etc. You can also copy files, send keystrokes and bunch of other stuff. (https://autoitscript.com/site/...)
Created an executable using that which will have an icon of a folder named 'Games', which, once opened, will copy itself to system32, add registry entries for launching itself on subsequent startups, would replace windows startup sound file by my favourite song, look for attached USB devices and copy itself to those, if found.
Soon, all my friends' PCs were singing my favourite song on boot.1 -
So got first invoice for Internet in my new flat. Via e-mail with winmail.dat attached. WTF? Send them reply that their mailing system is broken. They replied that *I* probably have wrongly setup *Outlook* and sent me instructions how to configure my Outlook. Thank you, my mutt us fine and your instructions wouldn't work. Sent them another reply that I'm happy that they know the answer and that they should apply it to their setup as my mail setup is correct. Got e-mail with pdf. No wonder those guys don't suppprt IPv6 nor DNSSEC if they have troubles using plain e-mail. Maybe I should check whether they have DKIM or SPF and do some little evil...1

The fucking nail to my coffin. This thing is so unreliable. I fixed on issue get the next one. Then get an error trying to make a http request, with little information on the web. Eventually switch to FTP which is working for a while. Then suddenly nothing is working properly. Even the serial communication has errors. This process took over 6 months. Constant debugging and headscraching involved. After hundreds of hours I give up. I'm going to switch to a Raspberry Pi Zero with an UMTS Stick attached. WE: javaagent-based monitoring, as seen in this screenshot <attached>, is reporting full old-gen, full young-gen, full one of the survivors and a sky-rocketing full GC right before the service outage.
WE: container monitoring in this screenshot <attached> shows that the application peaked its memory very suddenly to MAX values and platoed on that. Then container monitoring is blank, suggesting a complete outage of a few minutes. After that monitoring starts again with memory usage reported at low levels and immediatelly spiking back to MAX again, suggesting the container crashed and had been respawned by an orchestrator. This repeats a few times throughout the day.
they: I did not find any evidence of application running out of memory. Maybe our monitoring is not working correctly?

I am making a GUI wrapper in C# for a CLI tool written in Python. Obvioisly, the python exe is launched with the Process class and the output streams are redirected so I can process the console output. The problem is that some of that output is only printed if sys.stdout.isatty() returns True. Is there a hack that would allow me to launch the process in a way that python thinks that there is a console/tty attached?
I really don't want to touch the python source files, because that would be a messy solution. I also don't want the process to spawn an actual console window.1 -

I could probably continue on long enough to reach the character limit, but then... you know... "tl;dr".
So here's just the first three that came to mind.
1. Never get too attached to your code. Sooner or later, by intention or tragedy, it will be gone. Instead, hold value in the lessons you learned when writing it.
2. Always be experimenting. Don't be afraid to try new languages, frameworks, technologies, etc. However, when it comes to projects intended to eventually reach production, stick with what you already know.
3. Ask questions whenever you have them. The explanation of your ignorance can sometimes alone be enough to shed light on some related technical paradigm.1 -
Then you start in a new job.. wow big scenarios, complex, hundreds of microservices, large architecture, tons of trainings... and you have a task to check one thing... and you ask, please i need the documentation about this feature. “We don’t have any document. You can track it manually vis debug”
Now I have 7 instances of Visual Studio attached with a lot of services with tons of breaking points looking where the breakpoint will hit
Well done,🤙🏻 -

So were working with this company, and their designer gave us some designs for the app that they wanted us to build, everything was fine and dandy until we realized that there were 6 different font colors, including three different grays... And to top it off, the designs didn't have a color pallet attached, it had a list of colors attached, but most of those were never used in the designs... So we ended up eyeballing and using color inspector tools to get the colors from the design, just to later get told that we used the 'wrong' colors... 😢

I was trying to recover an external hdd, which was not spinning at all.
I started by changing the enclosure, using the SATA port, using another enclosure, now the only possible culprit is pcb.
On testing with multimeter I figured TVS diode was damaged, and since I don't have immediate access to a new pcb, I opened one of my old hdd and desoldered pcb from there and using wires I attached this salvaged TVS diode to the pcb.
It didn't work.
During the research, I came across the fact that different manufacturers make different pcbs, what the hell, I wish there could be some standardisation so people could just swap things easily instead of finding another hdd of the same model just to salvage the pcb.2 -

I've done few minor things, but, to be perfectly honest, I'm fed up of GDscript. I just internally hate it more every single time I touch it, so recently I stopped attempts to learn doing games for droid/iOS.
I'm looking for free alternative to godot, preferably no strings attached, but wahtever... Here is what I need:
- I prefer code, but doing stuff in GUI is fine, but stuff like making level etc, preferably in UI
- C++ derrived syntax (ex. c# etc. c++ is fine too), no BS like some wacky workaround to do basic shit like 2d array....
- easy android/iOS export (like in godot, one day I was attempting to hello world in android and compiling for first time... was quite an advanture)
- objects
- some easy way for restfull apis
Good to have:
- ability to test project without android VM
- observer pattern (signals/slots)
I don't care what structure it's made, for me milion of scenes on one screen was extremly coutner-intuitive but meh, whatever. As long as it's possible to learn, it is fine.
Can devranters help, please?
Thanks,
peace.16 -
I haven't been able to access ChatGPT since Friday. I thought it might help to delete all cookies so I did, and managed to access their login page. However, when clicking on "Log in", nothing happens, which shouldn't come as a surprise as there is no event listener on the button element, nor on any of its ancestors or descendants (see attached screenshot).23

Got a quick question here. If I have a program that uses the Google Maps API for it's location services, the Google Maps API becomes a dependency for my program right?
Just wondering if the term "dependency" can really be attached to any service/library/program that someone's application might require.5 -
I've been studying a bit about business analytics and intelligence to diversify a bit from dev.
After a lot of looking around I've found it's all just glorified jargon which basically enables your decision to have backing of facts and logic. It sounds as if it's a great coverup tool but don't know if it actually helped decision-making.
Why does researching the market/competition need to have a thousand breakdowns/categories/focus areas.
I feel like an interpretation of business analytics is a very simple and intuitive solution but there is just too much random and wasteful metrics attached to it.
I believe it's just my nascent knowledge and experience speaking, but I never felt the same way about software development, financials, etc2 -
something new. media has degraded to the point where the myopic nature of the people now making it have rehashed so many classics derived from the literate non-delusional sensation junkies o my age group and earlier to the point where barely anything comes out that doesn't have their weird themes attached making most of their films unenjoyable.
speaking of which suggest some new topic people. something new. say something new !1 -
So I just posted a rant with the photo attached, but when I posted it the photo isn't showing up... did it happen before?

So, total hardware noobie here. My laptop is giving me shit long Android studio build times and i am thinking of adding a ssd in it .thoughts? My current laptop specs are win10/8gb ram/1 tb hdd/ i5 7th gen
Recently i had a battery repair where that guy confirmed that i don't have some kind of ssd slot (idk the name) but ssd could be placed in the area of hdd, and hdd could be attached in the place of optical disk using "caddy" something.
On hearing this, my friend is advising me not to get caddy attached as it would still somehow provide slower speeds than just the ssd. is it true?
I was thinking of going for a 240gb ssd but if my 1tb hard disk is removed, i would have a to rethink about the softwares i use, since my C:drive is usually taking around 500 gb itself17 -
From the terminal, I can see that the development server is started, then couple of seconds later, there's accepted and closing; as seen attached.10

Hi, guys!
Maybe some of you can help me with React?
So I'm still learning React SM to make mini projects for practice and this is for project daily expenses and the mockup is attached. So, if i want to add an item, i want to match it with the current date and compare it with the last entry date, I'm confused here how to make the function.1 -
Is it possible to install TeamViewer/AnyDesk on a Debian Server (there is no Display attached to it so it has no real Desktop)?
I installed KDE and xrdp on it and that worked, the problem is that TeamViewer and also AnyDesk have a problem because they both can't find/use the fake RDP Desktop. Well and RDP is just so fucking slow...
So if anyone has some experience in this, I'd appreciate some help.6 -
Why is the “touch” command to create files called “touch”? Why isn’t it called mkfile or something? Like mkdir, chdir bleh?
I mean, was the dev too attached to the touch? Or was it that he was just too much into King Midas?4 -

Sometimes I get attached to a difficult programming language, I don't know why,
I'm very attached to Swift, it's tough and sample, but I got attached to it and loved it.
How crazy I am1
