My mom got audited for storing sensitive client information in her gmail account without using a vpn or any other real security.
I had been telling her this was an issue for literally the last three years and shes brushed me off every time.
I got yelled at for not telling her I was serious.35 -

My guide to know if your startup is failing:
My Qualifications: Every startup I've joined has failed. Not necessarily because of me.
For the sake of me typing faster, x=startup.
1) X doesn't have a product, but just an idea that x keeps pitching as the next "big thing". (What's with this shit anyway?)
2)X keeps changing products, One day your designing IoT sex toys and the next day your building a self aware AI. For some reason, the people at X saw Silicon Valley or that meme about how Instagram was created and thought "Fuck that happens to every moron who can switch on a computer."
3) Even worse, X keeps changing industries.
4) X keeps lying to you, your marginal user base and seems overall unethical. (You should leave at this point.)
5) X wants to target some obscure and very specific market and keeps pitching the company along the following lines
<famous_company> for <random_market>
Eg: "Yo bro it's like Amazon but for necrophiles."
6)X keeps saying that X is the next big thing. (X is not and I can't emphasize this point enough.)
What you should realize is this is my general observation and some or all of these points may not apply to every situation.
Sorry for typos and any other stuff.11 -
Couple years ago, I wrote a game in assembly.
Yesterday, I tried to look at the source, and realised there isn't a single fucking comment.9 -

Then I tried jetbrains webstorm, I tried atom. I tried VS. They all have their cool stuff but I was never fully satisfied.
Now I tried brackets. I just opened a project I'm working on rn and started coding a little.
Half a hour passed and I still didn't notice that I had a light theme.
Yes. This is it. I'll stay with this editor. It just feels right. I just need to figure out how to use tabs not spaces...

I devoted so much of my time to her. She told me her heart doesn't point to anyone. Yet I tried to reach her.
Everytime I ask her what's wrong, she gives me the same answer. I tried to be different. I changed things. Yet she said the same thing again today: "Segmentation fault (core dumped)"4 -

Me: Hello! Welcome to {Company} tech support. How can I help?
Caller: I'll just run through the situation. I got locked out of my apartment and my friend is still inside. I tried calling him but his phone is either off, Do Not Disturb, or something. Anyway, I've tried remotely SSHing our desktop computer from my laptop and using the say command to get the computer to tell him to unlock the door. Unfortunately the volume is too low. I tried Googling how to increase it via command line. But I found nothing. Is there a way to do that?

Working on another online pokemon game sort of thing and I'm super proud of myself because I just got the user registration, login, auth session, and logout done. Last time I tried making one of these damn things I didn't bother using a database and I tried making a complex user auth system using JSON files and God, I regret that now.
Now only a million steps to go (Including making the game)8 -
First story (not rant) :3
So I was asked to set problems for an online programming contest for my college (I'm a sophomore)
The participants were students from my college.
Teacher told me "make as hard as you can"
I gave it my all.
:|
1 person solved the first question. Nobody solved the other four. :|
Not sure if I should be proud or sad.
And if you're wondering - here was my first question -
Sam wants to invest in real estate. He's got X dollars to spend. He knows the expected value per square meter of a given property. He knows the coordinates of the vertices of the polygon shaped properties he's interested in.
(both the values and coordinates for each property are given in input)
Find the maximum return on investment he can get.
(answer is, basically you calculate the area of each polygonal house using half the vector cross product, multiply it with their expected value per square meter, and then apply a dynamic programming - knapsack approach)
;-; I really thought it was a nice question man. ;-; I put so much thought into others too. ;-;
Got ignored. ;-;6 -
I've really tried with DuckDuckGo, but any time I have to look something up quickly, I default to Google. Their search is just better.9

Dear Client,
You said it was of paramount importance that this software work flawlessly. I've worked hard to make it so, even when your indecision and lack of attention to detail indicate you don't care as much as you say and have made the project late.
Yesterday when I handed you a step-by-step user acceptance test plan, you delegated it to someone not as familiar with your specific requirements. You said you don't have time for such things.
I will remind you of those words when the project launches and you find something you dislike.
Sincerely,
Me -
For the first time I tried to use WordPress. I spent almost 30mins. Now I decided I should not use that again in my life. Fuck WordPress.2

It's really annoying when "programmers" who have only worked on one language/framework defend it as superior against any other framework. If you haven't tried Rails, how the fuck can you say Express is better? $;:&/@:$).
PS: if you've tried both and you like Express over Rails, I have nothing against you :)1 -

So I ended up installing Arch Linux as the primary OS in my laptop, and to be honest, I'm not very crazy about it. Because I'm someone who likes an elegant UX, I spent three days and over 50 reboots and 5 reinstalls just trying to get Plymouth to work correctly (in the end, I just said screw it and gave up.) I know, I probably messed something up in the installation or configuration, but I didn't really want to deal with it anymore.
I'm not a big fan of the pacman package manager; I prefer apt. There were several applications I couldn't get to work properly, such as Steam, the Tor Browser, and Wine. All in all, I've basically wasted a week trying to get Arch Linux to work as the daily driver on my laptop, but I guess it's just not the distro for me.
I'm going to give Arch one last shot with the Manjaro distro. I'm hoping that Manjaro's simplified installation and configuration will produce a more usable (in my case) OS, and if not, I'll probably be going back to something Debian-based.
I'm not at all saying Arch is a bad distro. I know many people use it as their daily driver, and I have absolutely no problem with that. I'm not writing this to debate which distro is better, I'm just writing about my experience with it. Arch just may not be the distro for someone like me. At least I gave it a shot, right?10 -

Been away from here for over a year.
Tried meditation, tried working out, tried eating more #00FF00s.

I was told that it was impossible to crush an egg with one hand. I knew that was nonsense so I never tried. This morning I was feeling adventurous so I tried it.

Does anybody know a good free software for whiteboarding and quick sketching?
I tried Leonardo and it's actually pretty damn good but is not free at all, tried Mischief and has some really bad performance issues (plus is not maintained anymore), tried Milton but is still immature, anything else (OneNote, Gimp, Krita) is just not what I need.
I want it quick, lightweight and easy to use just like Leonardo, but free.
So much was my disappointment that I decided to create my own sketching software from scratch while studying...2 -

Employer: It works. I can send and receive mails with Outlook.

Employer: It has to work. I even checked the informations I send you about the mail server settings and they are the correct ones.
I've tried every configuration which could be possible and rewrote my code. It wont work, so I tried to use my own mail server and it worked immediately.
Me: I've tried everything but I can't connect to your mail server. After a while I've tried to connect to my own and it works just fine.

Hey all,
Need some ReactJS help:
So I was able to redo a browser extension project to fit my needs for my browser proxy project, however for some reason, the original source code doesn't seem to know the Setup class for the setup page. Just spent almost an hour trying to figure out why my computer won't display on my tv monitor (because the best smart TV is a PC). I tried everything, unplugging the graphics card and using the motherboard, tried another tv, tried different sockets. Tried another graphics card etc.
Eventually, without notice, after plugging it to a regular PC monitor, it started working. No clue why. But it works now so I'm happy. -

I am really tired and frustrated.
Where should I even start?
I have created a TeX element with "/Math".
Then I have tried to type in a sum sign which works with "\\sum". BUT it won't let me display numbers below and above the sign. I tried to fix this by typing in "\\sum{someNum}{some\_other\_num}". It didn't work. I tried "\\qquad \\displaystyle\\sum\_{i=1}\^n". It still doesn't work. I tried "\\underset{}{}". It didn't work.
I tried to import the ams package. It didn't work.
I tried to read the official notion documentations. They didn't exist.
I tried some of the above KaTeX commands, because I saw that notion is using a KaTeX parser. "\\qquad" worked whereas "\\;, \\>" etc. didn't work.
"\\newline" and "\\\\" don't work.
When you have your formula written, it displays the latex commands and the results together when you don't edit the TeX/Math element anymore.
I would be very thankful for helpful answers.8 -

Anybody tried Yerba Maté? How does the stimulation compare to coffee? I need caffeine without coffee. I also heard about pills.6

So my (windows 10) laptop decided to suddenly forget about its Bluetooth capability. And about its Bluetooth hardware.
Now, I did not restart my system, I just left it idle for a while. Heck, I played rainbow six before leaving it idle (with a Bluetooth mouse, of course)
Tried checking for the settings (didn't find any settings related to Bluetooth service), didn't find it in device manager, useful the troubleshooter (bastard says the problem is I have no Bluetooth hardware installed), tried restarting the system, checked in bios menu (couldn't see hardware info printed in bios system info), tried updating/reinstalling the driver.
The hell am I supposed to do?10 -
Sometimes I have to do some data analysis a I use R Studio.
Today I tried to do the same thins using KNIME.
It just like comparing playing with Lego Duplo after having tried Lego Technic.1 -
So I wanted to make a Commodore 64 game, and I decided to use cc65, since I don’t want to use assembly.
First, I tried to position text, and I tried to use CSI escape codes, but that didn’t work.
I forgot to look at the examples, and then saw a lot of helper functions, which were nice.
Next, I tried to do some timing. sleep can only do seconds, so I wanted to use usleep, but they didn’t port it...
Moral of the story: ~~look at the docs~~ don’t make C64 games -
I am a huge fan of EmberJS and never tried ReactJS (i know it's lame haha :P) Let me know you guys opinion about Ember and React. It will be huge help when you tried both of them.1

I have been fighting with text shimmering problem in Unity UI for a VR app. Have tried textmesh pro and tried playing with 'Dynamic pixels per unit' as written in unity forums, but no use😑. The text looks ok when normal size but lowering size causes it to shimmer and unreadable.

What have devs tried for creating and hosting their own blog?

But want to hear what others have done.6 -
Following this rant : https://devrant.com/rants/1276494/...
So my coworker has a displaying issue, and the support ticket took time to give answers that does not work. (To tell you, the answer started with "I think that..." You tried what you said or you just think?)
So we tried everything they proposed (initialize the lists used properly, reduces the amount of data, etc.), nothing works. Then I added my two-cents and tried something.
I deleted a CSS class on a div.
Voilà. Issue resolved, it works perfectly. Nice. -
When I was young I tried to catch all the pokemons but "finally" now I "try" to "catch" all errors...

I tried, I really did.
But I cannot get the hang of not having a numpad. I have a peripheral numpad, but even that is awkward.
I even tried to mix things up and do the numpad on the left but thumping my mousehand thumb on my desk trying to hit enter 100x a day is just too much.3 -
I have to rant about this.i have holiday until March since universities only open because of strikes.i always had a freelancer account since about a year or two ago.ive tried and tried but IT JUST SEEMS SO IMPOSSIBLE to get a small development project.who else has had this experience(bidding endlessly unsuccessfully)

For solving a problem I document everything. From the moment I wake up to the moment I go to sleep, I want to have written out the problem in full and everything I have tried to get to a solution. I can then share this info with people around me which expedites the process and gives me new ideas I didn't have before. When I really hit a wall the goal for me is keeping myself DRY and knowing what I've tried and haven't tried.1

Any solutions?1 -
I was supposed to write test cases for existing code using gtest. No one wrote any test cases in our team but the framework setup was there. Cmakelist
I did everything I could but just could solve a linking error.
Asked all the senior people about my issue. No one could solve it in 10 minutes and it was also not a functional requirement so no one really bothered. I tried and tried and tried. After 2 weeks 3 days. On Thursday morning at 11 oclock I could solve it. I was under a lot of stress. Seriously those days were bad 😔
My manager used to think I'm technically weak. Now things have changed. And Cmakelist is awesome. -

I came across this code snippet on Quora, and I tried crashing the Codeforces server (strictly for educational purposes). Tried to install MS-DOS 6.22. Was not fun at all. Tried 3 iso flashers in total. The closest that happened to DOS was unetbootin getting bootlooped on the 10 second countdown to automatic system start. I gave up on it eventually.

Has anyone here tried Sailfish OS? I'm actually pretty impressed by it. It feels like a true mobile version of Linux without all the privacy issues of Android (Google) and the freedom you don't get with iOS. I think it looks pretty great too.

Anyone tried this Krypt.co thing? I just tried setting it up and I hooked up my Github and Google account with it. The odd thing during the connection, it kept asking me to add it as a Security Key. I didn't realize the Chrome Extension tricked the browser to think that it had a security key connected to it.

I don't know much about how search engines works and all that stuffs. I started a Blogspot and tried the Google Console to index my web on Google. But it sucks. I get redirect errors.
