I've been doing programming as a hobby since I was 10 years old, I've always found my teachers are good at IT but not that good in Computer Science and programming, this year a new teacher joined the IT department who has actual experience in programming etc.
Our school uses two services, a rewards system which for some reason can also show our timetable, and another service for displaying our homework. In my spare time I made a project which combined these two services and showed it to him. As the first teacher with actual programming experience he was impressed and now I get to 'pitch' my project to the teachers higher up.

My worst experience is, that I was fired after the third week in a new job. I worked then for a really small company.

My supervisor didn't like me and just wanted me out.

He asked for feedback and new ideas. I provided good reviews.

I even gave the company really good ideas, didn't get any credits for it, but they have implemented them now. Never got any credit for it.

I can look back and say that my supervisor then was a douche and wanted to kill off a young guy with a bit more technical knowledge and a vision.

For me it's in the past...

Now I got a way better job at a really gigantic company, better pay, much better work with better working times, a very friendly and helpful team, which appreciate my feedback and effort.

Sometimes it needs to get worse, to have later something better.

Now I can enjoy my new job and go everyday with a smile in my face :)

My boss already told me he didn't have my programming level, but we needed him because he had experience as community manager and good Photoshop skills, and right now we need a profile like that in our company.
Today the new guy asked me what are setters and getters.
How fucked is my company? Is there hope for us?

Spent 2-3 weeks on implementing a new feature, a guy with 10 years of experience jumps in and solves it within 5 days.

*Oh! I forgot to mention, it was his first time working with the framework.

I must say his OOP skills are really good, not sure if this is something you learn by reading books or simply by practice.

I strongly believe that if you have a good understanding of how to build apps with OOP pattern, you'll do a great job in the SW industry.

Several years ago, I was going to watch my first porn movie, and I was so afraid of the porn page publishing on my facebook "Elizadeath liked Xporn.net" or something like that (I had family on my facebook friends) so I:

1.- Used an old tablet (even its screen was crashed)
2.- Removed all email accounts (it has Android)
3.- Uninstalled all the social media apps, including youtube
4.- Put a piece of tape on the frontal camera
5.- Bought new headphones
6.- Navigated at the Android's default browser instead of Chrome, and in "secret" mode
7.- Deleted the cache and history after watching the movie XD

Epic newb here. Like, can-barely-read-HTML new. But I'm curious and interested. I work in an office filled with very skilled developers, and I bring the human component to the operations. Not a day goes by when I don't learn something, or teach something. Sadly, that enriching experience accounts for maybe half an hour of my day. I wish it was more. Anyhoo, rant on, Wayne!

My company just got a new developer to work on a legacy PHP app.

My boss was boasting about how this guy has more years of professional experience than me ( I have 9 months of experience and he has been working for 4 years on PHP).
Today was one week since he started and I had him set up a REST API, I had to explain to him what json_encode does and how http requests work.

I used to work in a small agency that did websites and Phonegap apps, and the senior developer was awful.

He had over a decade of experience, but it was the same year of experience over and over again. His PHP was full of bad practices:

- He'd never used an MVC framework at all, and was resistant to the idea, claiming he was too busy. Instead he did everything as PHP pages
- He didn't know how to use includes, and would instead duplicate the database connection settings. In EVERY SINGLE FILE.
- He routinely stored passwords in plain text until I pretty much forced him to use the new PHP password hashing API
- He sent login details as query strings in a GET request
- He couldn't use version control, and he couldn't deploy applications using anything other than FTP

I want to leave my job because it only uses old technologies but when I look for jobs they're looking for people with experience on new technologies. Catch-22.

Today I am going to rant about this guy who I am working with in a group for creating a mobile application as a project for a course.

So let me give you some background info about this guy. He has 5 years of experience as data analyst from some company in India. Now he is here in Canada for his masters. I took him in the group thinking given his experience, he can be an asset. However, as I started talking to him it became clear that he has no experience with programming or software development. I am ok with that as everyone is new to something. However, he started intrupting and started giving negative feedback about each and every thing we discussed regarding the project. Don't get me wrong, I am all about getting feesback. But if someone who is just sitting there and just searching stuff on google just to bull shit with people to show that he knows stuff is irritating. He always provide useless feedback and solutions to any problems.

I was talking to him about his past working experience and his future plans after graduating. He literally said, "I want to learn just enough to fake in front of employer during interview. I was doing the same thing in my previous job." I was legit shocked at this moment.

Now I have to tolerate this for another 3 months. I am just worried about the project.

Me: Hi! I'd like to apply for the front-end developer position!
Them: Mmhmm. What's your education? It involves a lot of javascript.
Me: I recently earned a certificate in javascript development for front-end, on top of my professional experience.
Them: What's you're experience?
Me: 8 years of professional front-end development.
Them: Hmm. That won't work. What about this job, Implementation Specialist?
Me: So I have to help the customer write requirements, train the customer with new software, write documentation for the customer... you want me to apply to be in customer support?

Would I have spent the last 8 years of my life learning and earning programming if I liked dealing with people?

Anyway, until I decide on a new laptop, I am using my dad's old machine running Windows 10. I also have an old desktop with a first-gen core i3, 8gb ram, 500gb HDD. What I'd like to do is run linux on the desktop and remote into it from my laptop. Is there a good way to RDP in to linux from Windows and preserve the full experience (like RDP from Windows to Windows)?

Discord is kinda easier than LINE. You had to create facebook accounts or fake lots of telephone numbers to be able to verify your bot account. They also kept changing the endpoints to avoid people using their bots.

I'm fairly new as an engineer (less than a year of experience in industry), and I'm happy that I get so much constructive feedback in my code reviews. However, sometimes I come out of them feeling like absolute trash. The review I had yesterday highlighted my lack of experience with API development, and I left the meeting feeling like I didn't even deserve to work here.

Had an online programming interview for a start-up, writing code into a shared Google doc while on the phone with the interviewer.
Specifically told that I could just use pseudocode, so I did, without worrying about access modifiers, full variable declarations and use of "new" for making objects, or specific type declarations, etc.
Got told at the end that I "lack experience, and really should have defined access modifiers, declared types, and so on, and that they needed someone proficient in Java. That was the first time I knew about their Java requirement.

Maybe that's the point, you see a lot of people fall of the wagon or get stuck without work, and here I am just plowing through the next problem at hand.

My career was founded on trying something new, seeing something and going, it's needs X, or Y and building my own with it - no degree got me into software, and no degree is going to replace the years of experience gained by just trying new things.

It also allows you to be well versed in a lot of areas and not feel the paradigm shift when changing stack, language, framework, or whatever, it's just another tool in the shed that has its purpose.

HR is getting so desperate they are prescheduling me interviews attached with CVs in the hopes that I will interview the candidates for a senior, even though the candidates have no experience whatsoever in embedded software programming. Workday, JIRA and Excel does not count you absolute fucknuggets.

For fuck sake, I asked management to hire new grads or juniors, at least I can get a person motivated to learn, but I swear they just don't listen.

So everything went ok, I had a little help from a colleague, structuring code, and pushing to the store. Work done app was doing ok.

A year later I came back to this project. I needed to fix a bug - date time and daylight savings crap. 😥

Spent a week on it. Ready to push a new version to the store, with some extra features! Build apk. All good.

Wait. I need to sign the APK? Wtf. I had to format my hard drive. How do I recover my fucking certificate?

Worst experience: being laid off when the startup I worked for lost a deal. I loved that project :(

Best experience: my new company sent me to USA for a few days to meet the client. I've gained a lot more of confidence on my spoken English. I've didn't use it in years, so I was worried. Perhaps you wouldn't think it's a "dev" experience, but English is actually a required skill for a developer who has it as a second language.

What's your worst experience with "not invented here syndrome"?

In the recent past I've been dealing with custom made JS datepickers, autocomplete boxes and various other widgets that were purpose made for some feature. Almost every single widget the app uses is built from scratch.

Now there are new features that need these widgets to behave differently, and needless to say, none were built with customisation or extendability in mind.

Hardly shocking, I know, but I'm the one that has to spend several hours to get these widgets to work for the new features instead of using some of the many open-source, tested, mature and customisable solutions that are out there.

Today was my first day in a Molding Company (CNC operator)... IT was fine, I barely could hold on physically but I did it :D In less than two weeks I'll be operating my 3 new machines like a PRO.

I work as an intern in a big company. There is a person who joined the company recently with about 6 years of experience in other big companies. He can't do simple things like adjusting his computers resolution and raised a request for a new monitor. He used to wonder why his request was denied 😐 later when I got to know this had happened, I went and fixed the resolution, he was so fascinated.. Hmm...

So, I got this new coworker of mine, he's 5 years older than me and says he's got a loooot of experience with html, css und javascript. Nice. Boss wants us to blur some text on a website, I show him how to do it with css "filter: blur(4px)".

5 minutes later he's all proud and says "done". I think nice, check the code - and see this moron having put an <img> png in there, having blurred the text with photoshop. Short memory, anyone?

My work experience, knowledge and everything else was upto the mark(exceeded at some places) with their requirements. I was handling full technology stack for previous company.

But while negotiating he declined me salary I asked for because previous company was small (startup with no big name, it shut down after few years) also previous company payscale was low so they offered me increment based on that payscale( which was low compared to salary they offer for same experienced person).

He also hired one more guy who was from big company with same experience, but he got more salary than me. Later I came to know that he knows little compared to me and most of the time manager asked him to take help from me for coding.

Now at the time of increment he is offering me increment with which my salary is still less that the other guy.

I think its time to leave.

I have experience with Ubuntu, OpenSuSE, and Debian, but I’m not adverse to trying something new, I’m even toying with the idea of Arch (but with a few test runs on a vm first)

After many days of going through my first time LFS experience, I have finally booted into my new lfs system with no problems :) Seriously the coolest feeling seeing it boot for the first time knowing how much brain power I had to put into it. Cant wait to continue the LFS journey!

I am thinking maybe the biggest difference between me and everyone else on my team is because I have a lot more experience creating my own apps.

So when I get a problem I tend to start by thinking how to create a new app for it, what would be the ideal way to solve the problem. And then if needed, figure out how to integrate it into an existing project.

Whereas everyone else thinks about how to solve a problem within the context (and constraints) of an existing app.

Explaining to the new team, all with experience, how to compile and what to do with errors. 😓

We have so much pl/sql at our company and it really sucks because the "young" generation of devs must convince the pl/sql guys to switch to some more powerful and newer languages like java.

But not everyone wants to use the new stuff or learn anything new. I mean there are some programmers who really appreciate that there is new stuff. They have no problem learning from the younger generation. But some of them just resist any change in that direction, and thats the much higher amount of devs.

Does anyone of you have such experience? What can i do against that?
Is that some kind of "i am too old for this"-trip?

Got rejected from a really nice opportunity today. Irrelevant experience as it seems to the company.

As it turns out I'm an unlucky beginner in the industry who's stuck with a wrong, legacy code project. Doesn't mean I don't know anything and I can't learn new stuff. They were not judging capabilities, just judging people by the project they're working on in their current firm.

Best: gaining experience and learning new ways to write programs in the best way possible, even beyond working hours

I hate hate hate writing résumés for dev positions. Each posting requires that you guess wildly about their stack therefore write a totally new résumé. You don't get a job because you omitted the keyword "Newtonsoft" when mentioning your Dotnet Core experience. Hiring departments have one job and they universally suck at it for tech.

He was the perfect guy for the job, according to management. Two weeks ago he asked me what JWS Cookie I used to send my requests.

Applied for a job which would like you to have some C# knowledge. Not required though. I'm like, fine, I know Java (and I'm pretty decent at it) and I know that C# looks like Java in many areas. So, I made it clear that I didn't have any C# experience, and now they require me to do a 2 hour long "difficult" test in ASP.NET and C#... GG, the search for a new job continues.

TL;DR: inotify is great and I am lazy bitch so I wrote a script to kinda do my work

I took some time to write a script that takes a folder with images (Screenshots) and move them somewhere else with the last modify time as their new name (something like "Screenshot_DATE_TIME.png) because my current screenshot software for Windows (Lightshot) only saves their screenshots like this: Screenshot_<Incrementing Number>.
Once in a while I'd like to move those images away to "clean up" that folder, but I always have to create a new folder like "OLD" but that already exists so it becomes "OLD_1" which.. also existed up to "OLD_3" and I finally grew sick of it!

2ish hours later my Perl script now automatically gets triggered by inotify once a new file (Screenshot for that matter) is written or moved to the Screenshot folder and auto-fucking-matically moves it to the "new" folder with the new filename so I don't have the issue of having "OLD_1" .. "OLD_INFINITY" anymore.

Little things / scripts like these really make me feel good about what myself and my coding skills (I know, this is a somewhat trivial task but still a great experience)

learning a different language can be difficult sometimes. since i already know other languages, i get them mixed up. putting semicolons, putting spaces even though i shouldnt, putting parenthesis or even forgetting some keywords because in another language, its not necessary. makes it difficult to adjust to the new syntax. but the fun part of learning is having more knowledge and experience.

The senior dev lead from the consultant group has 25+ years consulting and claims to have written a web browser for the blind and all sorts of in-depth accessibility things.

Stakeholders tell us "Don't forget about accessibility compliance on this project"

Senior dev lead with all this claimed accessibility experience asks me, "What does accessibility mean?"

It's just that your team doesn't have experience in "insert platform name here" so we want to use a third party to move "insert product name here" into it.

My first thought: why don't you just train the team with the product knowledge in the new platform rather than the other way around? Does anyone else see this happen and want to eat glass every time it does?

I was in 2 roles back to back and in that time, every single Front End Development role now available in the market requires commercial experience in React/Angular/Vue in order to proceed.

Looking at new jobs in my area. This company is looking for an entry level full stack developer with “eights” years of experience. And preferred to have a masters degree. Probably only paying half the normal rate I bet too.

Working on a project in which the work is planned around what I'm already good at, isn't much use.

Yes, the person who is paying for the project, would want only someone with experience (good experience) to work on the project.

This happened 2 years ago. With 1 year c++ application development experience in a big firm, the new company hired me as "intern". That moment I was like ok ok whatever then the nightmare began. They forced me to code on windows xp with visual studio200x with an old ass c++ (much older than my previous work, there's no string data type) and it has to work on IE. I told my supervisor that this code is obsolete and I need a new windows, IDE, and newer c++ to work on. He said he will get it done. 1 month passed I still sat my ass on the same chair with an old ass pc in front of me. Best thing I could do was designing a new web ui yet they still force me to work on their unfinished obsoleted codes. Well u know what? I quit 😒

We're looking to change the domain provider we use to register new client's domains to one that has an API.
So far it looks like it'll either be namecheap or AWS's Route 53.
We're also looking for the same thing with mail inboxes.

Do you have any recommendations / experience with either of these?

I was hoping to find a solution that would provide both the domain registration and the mailboxes with no hosting and accessible via API but I've had no such luck.

Well I would say a pretty humbling experience was my last job interview where my new boss and hr guy were truly shared by my skills and then the first day at work where my boss said please do this decision, I really need an opinion by an experienced developer like you as I am not sure which one is the better one.

Working on a piece of code, first created in 1994 and has had constant changes and modifications till 2014

I need to take it and turn it into a procedure library and new methods and classes and I have 3 weeks to do it.

Worst off I'm a junior programmer and I only have 9 months experience with the language

Best experience: Getting my first contract for a major project, and landing a new job with a web agency for the first time!

Worst experience: Underestimating the contracted project, and having to learn while working on the project.

I am an stupid human being. How many times should I experience the same problem to learn from it? I don’t know why should I possibly be obsessed by latest MacOS updates? This fucking error ruined my day. Those fucking idiot coders in Apple must use some unit tests (including transparent iTerm in second display). Fuck you all. My £1600 Macbook pro is literally useless until some fucking coder finds what is wrong in their NEW update.

Every time a new hype thing appeared, I was annoyed, like "kids these days and their tiktoks".

But at some point in time, this pattern of mine changed completely. I don't know how it happened, I don't know when it happened, but now I experience... acute nostalgia?

I miss Elon Musk and his twitter fanbase. I miss tiktok. I feel like a time traveller who went into their past, which is our present, to experience the cultural landmarks once again, because their time here is limited, and tomorrow they will have to go back.

I miss my autism problems and mental health uphill battle. I miss avengers and thanos. I miss metaverse.

Oh, and also... I miss you.

So I start my new dev job Monday and I'm considering vlogging/blogging the experience. Have any of you found success doing this? Not monetarily but like actually had time to create some decent content. Any tips or advice would be appreciated.

When shadowing "experienced devs" as a "new dev" remember that if you fix their problems they will tell everyone they did it. At least that is my experience.

Hot Take:

It's our own double standard because of which companies have to enforce a "Don't discuss your salary" clause in the employee handbook.

For example let's say you are a 4 years experienced dev making $50K annually. You hear about a new joiner who has 2 years experience drawing $65K from the company. You will be outraged knowing that, wouldn't you?

The double standard kicks in when the coin is flipped. Now let's say you are 2 years experienced dev making $60K annually. You hear about a new joiner who has 6 years experience drawing a $45K annual salary.

You're not gonna fight with your employer for them to get more salary, are you? If anything, you will be happy to hear that.

When everyone knows how much everyone else is making, it fills them with resentment towards each other. This is why companies make a rule for their employees to never reveal their salaries, because of our own double standard.

In light of this week's topic - I need your thoughts. I am planning to quit my current job. In your experience, should I have another job before quitting or look for it full time. I just got my appraisal - will the salary at the new job match my increased salary or would it be the same. Note, I have only 1 year experience.

Went to meet up last night. I was there acting like I have no experience and was just starting to learn programming. Suddenly this guy turns and faced me he said non verbatim “don’t use JavaScript thats the worst programming language, its used by wanna be software engineer. Use c# they have blazor so you wont have to code using JS”. My blood pressure went up guys. I understand this because hes kinda old and dont want to learn new things but i got caught off guard. To be honest im not mad, im just sad though, imagine if i was really new and had no experience and just started few months ago. All the hard work and studying will be nothing. Btw hes nice he offered me free food and beer its just JS.

If you’re learning any language specifically JS. Dont mind the naysayers. Just learn it and be good at it. Languages has its use cases. Conversation with whats better programming language is useless and a waste of time thats what my professor said and its true.

Are there any norwegian devs out there that are looking for a new colleague (webdev)? :D
I'm going to be out of work in a few months time, and have started applying for jobs in the Oslo area, but most jobs I see listed require 3+ years of experience. I've worked with web for about 9 months and I'm keen to get more experience. Interested in a full time job or being a trainee.

Proficient in HTML, CSS/SASS, JavaScript/jQuery, PHP, Wordpress, MySQL.

If yoy know anything, please let me know :)

Switching to Java after several years of c# experience(new project)... and it feels like lobotomy has been performed on both the language/machine and my part - no var keyword(yet), horrible work with the collections (but thank god we have at least the streams), basic things like Long are actual objects(not a value type), strings must be compared with .equals ... and suddenly even simple tasks take me horrendous amount of time.

I never had too much professional experience but I'm feeling so lost during this sprint. New senior developer is running laps around tasks while I'm still struggling with the new code review process we adopted, and still taking my time to understand tasks, I feel useless and even fearful of losing my job as the company (which is a growing startup) starts hiring more people.

Recruiter: We are looking for a full-stack expert. You have taken multiple apps from conception to deployment, and have experience and opinions on the best technologies to use and why. You should be comfortable implementing new features from scratch, making changes to existing features and writing complex migrations on production data.

Dev: lol

I have worked in a hosting or sysadmin role for at least 8 years out of my career and managed thousands of servers in very large environments. My team has been shopping around for a new hosting company and has yet to include me on the calls / advisement. The people shopping for a provider... Zero hosting experience. Zero sysadmin experience. Zero applicable experience. Not IT people, not technical. Well I guess it's job security for when things blow up in our faces that I'll need to fix it.

Why? Because my first django project ran successfully in staging environment!! Ok, There were few little bugs. But I fixed most of them.

So, this is a story of an experience a friend of mine had with Android Studio.

As part of our semester, we are required to make an application through Android Studio, and had no previous experience with it. We started to download and install it all which were a nightmare on its own to make it work.

While i got it to work in the end, she encounterred a big issue. Her pc was named after her name, which contained letters android studio did not understand (æ,ø,å) and made it absolutely useless.

After installing and uninstalling multiple times, she ended up making and entire new user called "F#ck Android Studio" just to make it work.

No idea if there was an easier way, but damn its been hell for her

Guys does any of you know good first c++ project. I have a lot of experience with java and python so I am not new to programming, but I want to get proficient in C++ because I am soon starting a job which all lower level programming.

In my current job, I was let go of the project I was handling for almost two years in place for a new hire with less experience. The reason is that I got complacent while sacrificing code quality as more similar tasks were assigned. I'm glad it happened and grateful for all the code practices I've learned. Transferring to a new project with the same client though. 😂

Do you usually spend some of your time learning new programming language/pattern/technology? I mean, I am not the type of person who does same thing over and over again, also like learning new things (I spend a lot of time per month studying new things), trying to get experience and trying new technics, but other side of me thinks that I need to be the best in one of them... My mind flashes blue screen of death sometimes when I am thinking about this...

Just finished my Web Dev internship!! i'm so cheeeringg!, What i can say is from experience it was definitely fun meeting many new faces ,making some new friends and working with some great technologies :D

I want to create a website and the frontend stuff is already done by another guy. It is similar to social media in that it needs an upvote-system and accept uploads. There also needs to be a payment system. I have very little experience in web development, but I have a lot of fun learning new things.

My question: Would you recomend a CMS(which one) or
learning by doing?
