"years of experience" basically means nothing, both for people and organisations. You can work with someone who has 30 years experience who knows nothing, and someone with 1-2 years who's practically an expert.
Joined a large multi-national fresh out of college, that had been around for +90 years. I expected them to know software development inside and out. Didn't expect to see so many failed projects for stupid reasons, so many over sights, so many .... morons, to be honest.
Worked for a startup company where most only had 1 or 2 years more experience than me and learned so much.
Worked for a small company where everyone had 1.5 - 2 times my experience, where I learned the meaning of "bewilderment".

A guy that just did not know how to code. He had years and years of experience (?), but DID NOT KNOW HOW TO CODE. He was given a simple task, spent weeks on it and what came out was usually 60 lines of "if, elseif, elsif....else".
He was given several warnings, and eventually "voluntarily" left the company.

I know "designers" who would say they have 10+y.e. but I mean they design websites that to this day, use table layout and oldish looking design language.. (ofc there are examples that state the opposite!)

I may have exceeded "10,000 hours of experience" in programming.
10,000 hrs / 2hrs per day / 360 days in a year = 14 years
I've been programming for 20 years as a hobby, and 5 years professionally which I think averages out to the 2hrs per day
I wonder if and how I should put that more explicitly on my resume. And maybe that's why I see so many monkeys at work...7 -

It looks like you're using more than 100 external parties for whatever fucking reason. It is nearly impossible to disallow these, except for some stuff like analytics, which I don't like since it includes mass surveillance parties like Google and Facebook, but I'd at least, to some extent, understand that better.
But, the amount of dark pattern here is staggering and this kind of 'consent' you're using wouldn't, in a million years, hold up under the GDPR.

My fellow dev (a younger guy) and I have been having a lot of disagreements with the lead dev (obviously a more experienced, older guy).
We can have arguments with him all day long, to explain and convince him that he's not that right, or not right at all.
Or we can keep silent and wait for shit to happen.
I'm already applying the stfu strategy myself... Because the other way round is exhausting.
At the same time, naturally, I'm looking for opportunities somewhere else. And, naturally, in those job ads, they state "X years of experience".

I'm sick of having an argument shut down because someone has X more years of experience, at a higher position, thinks he is better.

Am I the only one that thinks it's extremely fucking stupid that the software engineering industry is simultaneously experiencing a "shortage of talent" and maintaining the same ATS that filters legitimate talent just because the resume doesn't fit keyword specifications?
We see it every day. People with years of experience that should never be allowed to touch important code. People with little to no experience that learn fast and perform well. Fuck years of experience being the only thing some recruiters see.
"We generally don't hire people with less than 3 years experience" shut your fucking mouth. Ridiculous. You hire people out of college, don't lie to my face.
Oh and don't even get me started on how many people fabricate their industry experience and get interviews from it. That's what happens when recruitment patterns fail to catch up to an industry that increasingly trains people better up front, and in shorter time periods, and values skills that ATS doesn't give a shit about.

I have been working for 5 years and I don't dare to say it because I have seen real seniors with 15+ years of work experience and how they work. A completely different level. Hell, I refuse opportunities that announce they want senior engineers for that reason.10 -

I’m one of maybe the 10% of dev boot camp graduates that had a successful outcome. Most people think it’s as easy as just showing up, write mediocre code, get a certificate then you’re automatically an “engineer” with job offers being thrown at you. It’s not. I already had experience writing code throughout high school and took 2 years of cs classes at university before dropping out. TLDR; only worth it if you already have some technical knowledge or experience otherwise your just pissing away your money.5

So I'm looking at the jobs available and the jobs I'm applying for and realizing that even though I'm never gonna use the 70+ languages (exaggeration) in daily work for any of these prospective employers, I'd better have those languages (and 5+ years of experience in each) just because HR is keyword happy about stuff they know nothing about.

Working on individual projects is a million times more fun than interview prep / doing Leetcode problems.

I spent the whole day on git conflicts, I know it happens sometimes. But I do feel like a slow programmer, the boss even said so by comparing me to someone who has 15 years experience by saying I produce less lines of code than than him ( I have 5 years of experience).

After that most uf us go to a higher degree (BSc oder MSc). Both can be taken part-time. Again about 50/50 school + work.

Finding a Ruby on Rails developer job here in North Carolina fucking sucks. I got through three sets of interviews and they told my recruiter I aced them and answered their questions flawlessly but instead of hiring a ruby developer to 1-3 years of experience they now want to hire a software architect with 4-6 years of experience. So I get these spam messages all the time, but correct me if my math is wrong. 15 years of combined experience / 155 employees = 0.096 years experience per employee which is about a month experience each assuming everyone has the same amount of experience. (15 / 155) * 12 = 1.152 (rounded of course). Now I know having the least amount of experience isn’t always a measure of quality since I have about the least in my team yet have been teaching some of the more experienced coworkers of mine some things but if I am trying to sell services I would probably pump up the collective years of experience a bit. Especially if there’s 155 of you.

I have zero experience working in a company. I did a few freelancing projects. My friend forwarded my resume to a company. They contacted me after some time, and gave me a technical challenge. I have solved it, sent it back to them, now I am waiting for their answer.
What's the thing? After going to the company website, I realized they require at least 3 years of experience. But they still contacted me knowing that I am still a student and have only done freelancing work.
No matter do they accept my solution or not, this is a lesson for me and for everyone else: do not let required years of experience discourage you from applying to a position. You can still get a chance.

My biggest dev regret is being complacent in my programming ability from way too early on. I learned a bunch of stuff from intro programming classes (which I always brushed off as "unnecessary" and "boring") because I was too ignorant to accept that writing the same Python code over and over wasn't progress. It's our own double standard because of which companies have to enforce a "Don't discuss your salary" clause in the employee handbook.
For example let's say you are a 4 years experienced dev making $50K annually. You hear about a new joiner who has 2 years experience drawing $65K from the company. You will be outraged knowing that, wouldn't you?
The double standard kicks in when the coin is flipped. Now let's say you are 2 years experienced dev making $60K annually. You hear about a new joiner who has 6 years experience drawing a $45K annual salary.
You're not gonna fight with your employer for them to get more salary, are you? If anything, you will be happy to hear that.
When everyone knows how much everyone else is making, it fills them with resentment towards each other. This is why companies make a rule for their employees to never reveal their salaries, because of our own double standard.17 -

If one can claim experience in a language if they have written a hello world code, can I write that I have 5 years of experience, if I write that same hello world code every year for 5 years in a row?4

My first experience was when I found old book about visual basic. Many years after that I was thinking that every language has a magic function to sort array. But normal coding expirience i've got when some day me and my friend decided to create a game. And after 2 years of development - ta da, I knew how to code.

I don't think it's still a valid years of experience of react native/flutter thing when they're job posting.
"Must have 4 years experience with react native/flutter"
I'll be seeing "I'm sorry, but you did not have 4 years of experience in flutter"3 -

I am currently working on very very bad designed solution. I doubt if it can be written any worse.
When I inherited it, at first I thought it was done by some intern, but later on I found in repo full name of original creator. In free time I googled the guy and I was in shock. The culprit has more than 15 years of professional experience. For 12 years he worked at one place and than ~1 years in 3 different companies. It seems he cannot hide his incompetence anymore :)2 -

I might be moving to England soon and I'm a drop-out. I have been coding for 5+ years and have quite an amount of experience in my hands. What courses should I consider that can boost my ability to find a job in England? Devops? Backend? Frontend? App Dev? Game Dev? I am interested and have a minor experience in DevOps, main bulk of my experience is in backend, a bit of frontend(not my field but its still coding) the other two i've had no experience in other then debugging and fixing code in several projects i've worked on.

Saw an ad that required 8+ years experience in Swift.. Didn't Swift come out like... 4 years ago? Can these recruiters have a sense of what they're doing and the area they're in please. Not just this one, but many others as well.1 -
Remembering those good old apprentice days, when you had to had 2+ years of experience + 3 or more different languages, just to receive minimum wage. Those were THE days.. *sigh*3

Alright, could someone with more experience tell me if nowadays the job application requirement of "x years experience needed" is something fixed or flexible?
My friends say: "That's the ideal candidate, but they are flexible if need be." but I see employers these days state that the x years experience is in fact mandatory and required.
