"years of experience" basically means nothing, both for people and organisations. You can work with someone who has 30 years experience who knows nothing, and someone with 1-2 years who's practically an expert.
Joined a large multi-national fresh out of college, that had been around for +90 years. I expected them to know software development inside and out. Didn't expect to see so many failed projects for stupid reasons, so many over sights, so many .... morons, to be honest.
Worked for a startup company where most only had 1 or 2 years more experience than me and learned so much.
Worked for a small company where everyone had 1.5 - 2 times my experience, where I learned the meaning of "bewilderment".

I fixed it to "Basic implementation skill in C++".8 -
A guy that just did not know how to code. He had years and years of experience (?), but DID NOT KNOW HOW TO CODE. He was given a simple task, spent weeks on it and what came out was usually 60 lines of "if, elseif, elsif....else".
He was given several warnings, and eventually "voluntarily" left the company.

I know "designers" who would say they have 10+y.e. but I mean they design websites that to this day, use table layout and oldish looking design language.. (ofc there are examples that state the opposite!)

10,000 hrs / 2hrs per day / 360 days in a year = 14 years
I've been programming for 20 years as a hobby, and 5 years professionally which I think averages out to the 2hrs per day

It looks like you're using more than 100 external parties for whatever fucking reason. It is nearly impossible to disallow these, except for some stuff like analytics, which I don't like since it includes mass surveillance parties like Google and Facebook, but I'd at least, to some extent, understand that better.
But, the amount of dark pattern here is staggering and this kind of 'consent' you're using wouldn't, in a million years, hold up under the GDPR.
You know what would be a better experience? No tracking and no ads.

My fellow dev (a younger guy) and I have been having a lot of disagreements with the lead dev (obviously a more experienced, older guy).
We can have arguments with him all day long, to explain and convince him that he's not that right, or not right at all.
Or we can keep silent and wait for shit to happen.

So I'm looking at the jobs available and the jobs I'm applying for and realizing that even though I'm never gonna use the 70+ languages (exaggeration) in daily work for any of these prospective employers, I'd better have those languages (and 5+ years of experience in each) just because HR is keyword happy about stuff they know nothing about.

So I get these spam messages all the time, but correct me if my math is wrong. 15 years of combined experience / 155 employees = 0.096 years experience per employee which is about a month experience each assuming everyone has the same amount of experience. (15 / 155) * 12 = 1.152 (rounded of course). Now I know having the least amount of experience isn’t always a measure of quality since I have about the least in my team yet have been teaching some of the more experienced coworkers of mine some things but if I am trying to sell services I would probably pump up the collective years of experience a bit. Especially if there’s 155 of you.1

What's the thing? After going to the company website, I realized they require at least 3 years of experience. But they still contacted me knowing that I am still a student and have only done freelancing work.
No matter do they accept my solution or not, this is a lesson for me and for everyone else: do not let required years of experience discourage you from applying to a position. You can still get a chance.

I had interview with a company after I graduated. Although I may not be a top tier student, I considered myself is better than average students because I have a few years of programming experience and I have some projects with a few thousands of download.
However, the IT industry in Hong Kong is very conservative. They concerns more "years of job experience" instead of actual programming experience and general knowledge. During the interview, they just ignore what I did in the past few years, and considered me of classic book nerf with no real programming ability. But what really piss me of is the interviewer told me I would have a Java programming test before I left, however, the lady later came in just asked me out and told me that the interview was done. I just felt unrespect. -

I have worked in a hosting or sysadmin role for at least 8 years out of my career and managed thousands of servers in very large environments. My team has been shopping around for a new hosting company and has yet to include me on the calls / advisement. The people shopping for a provider... Zero hosting experience. Zero sysadmin experience. Zero applicable experience. Not IT people, not technical. Well I guess it's job security for when things blow up in our faces that I'll need to fix it.1

My biggest dev regret is being complacent in my programming ability from way too early on. I learned a bunch of stuff from intro programming classes (which I always brushed off as "unnecessary" and "boring") because I was too ignorant to accept that writing the same Python code over and over wasn't progress. I'm way behind where someone with 7 years of programming experience should be, because I spent 4 of those years writing the same garbage.

It's our own double standard because of which companies have to enforce a "Don't discuss your salary" clause in the employee handbook.
For example let's say you are a 4 years experienced dev making $50K annually. You hear about a new joiner who has 2 years experience drawing $65K from the company. You will be outraged knowing that, wouldn't you?
The double standard kicks in when the coin is flipped. Now let's say you are 2 years experienced dev making $60K annually. You hear about a new joiner who has 6 years experience drawing a $45K annual salary.
You're not gonna fight with your employer for them to get more salary, are you? If anything, you will be happy to hear that.
When everyone knows how much everyone else is making, it fills them with resentment towards each other. This is why companies make a rule for their employees to never reveal their salaries, because of our own double standard.17 -

I have a 3 freaking professional experience as a .NET developer and was freaking able to deliver successful projects. My experience is .NET freaking windows form. And for every freaking time that someone would call and interview me they do freaking ask if I have a freaking ASP.NET MVC experience and I don't freaking have! BUT I DO KNOW HOW TO BUILD USING THE FREAKING FRAMEWORK.
The freaking problem is my 3 years of experience is from winform, but i do freaking know how to use the framework.
How do I freaking get a job as a freaking MVC dev if no freaking employer wants to a hire a freaking C# dev with lead dev role but no freaking experience with ASPNET MVC!2 -

Attended an interview with a mid-size web development agency in 2017. The recruiter fed back from this agency that the interviewers didn't think I'd had enough experience of an agency environment. I'd spent six years in the industry at this point, and five and a half of those years were in agencies. The recruiter was as mystified as I was over that one. -

I like how hiring managers want everyone to have 5 years of Golang experience. I've been writing go since 2014. There were hardly any Golang jobs in the market 4 years ago. Where would be getting this enterprise Golang experience from? The only big companies that had full systems written in Go 4 years ago was Google and DropBox.

Why would anyone want to study and have years of experience in boring-ass jobs like QA, BI,specific enterprise applications consultant(e.g SAP/Salesforce), PC technician, helpdesk, integrator or sales.
I understand people who lack experience in more sexy stuff and have no choice, or do this temporarily. But I met some people who do it for years out of their own will. Why? There are far more interesting jobs in the tech world. -

Given that a) no one I have seen with this much experience wants these positions, b) HR says they are getting applicants with this much experience, I can only assume two things:

A couple days back, I saw a junior position ask for 10 years experience in Javascript and HTML/CSS. Um. I'm sorry, WHAT?! Experience is so relative.. I could've learned HTML/CSS/JS 10 years ago and barely use it every year and still say I have 10 years of experience as opposed to somebody that learned it consistently in around a year. That person with 1 year experience would have more experience than me from the consistency with using these technologies. I just hate how employers will filter out resumes based on years of experience but it's getting better now, since you still have a chance if you don't have the "required" or "preferred" experience. -

I was talking with a few people from college recently and we all had a good laugh at the fact, That a lot of job postings for mobile developers state that they are looking for an senior/intermediate android developer that has anywhere from 10 -15 years experience.
I even had an interview and in it they stated that they are heart set on finding someone with 12+ years of experience.
but Android was only release 9 years ago... SO HOW ARE YOU SUPPOSE TO HAVE 10+ YEARS EXPERIENCE -
My first experience was when I found old book about visual basic. Many years after that I was thinking that every language has a magic function to sort array. When I inherited it, at first I thought it was done by some intern, but later on I found in repo full name of original creator. In free time I googled the guy and I was in shock. The culprit has more than 15 years of professional experience. For 12 years he worked at one place and than ~1 years in 3 different companies. It seems he cannot hide his incompetence anymore :)2 -

Why is senior dev title given so easily nowadays? If the average career is 30 years, I would think a senior dev would be someone with 15 to 20 plus years of experience.
A person at my work was just given the title and they've been out of school for 7 years. For the record, I've been out of school for 5 years and I'd say I'm in between beginner and mid level. The title has nothing to do with skill, just the knowledge that comes with working in a field for a long time.3 -
