I started coding in 1994 making .BAT menus for my DOS games. Used HELP.EXE to find commands I could use. Then I figured out how to modify and run GORILLA.BAS (using Q-Basic). Man, when I realized that all BASIC commands were in the OS documentation as well, that was the Red Pill! Just started to copy commands and blocks from the Gorillas game into a new program, read the doc, modify, run and learn. Btw, the first BASIC command I played with was "PLAY" (for music).
At that time I was 10 and there was no Stackoverflow, no Youtube, no tutorials, no Google... no easy path to follow down the rabbit hole.

Got a question for the linuxers.
I'm a linuxer myself (no shit) but I don't really tweak a lot. Whenever I see those awesome arch setups with tiling wm's etc (https://devrant.com/rants/1902395/ for example), I would love to set that up myself but one thing:
Any idea on how I'd be able to run this well with 6 screens? I've got genuinely no clue.23 -

I should not have looked at this really interesting Chrome extension.
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/...
It tries to prevent phishing links from working by adding attributes to change the behaviour of the browser.
HOW DOES THIS WORK?
Just one simple line:
$('[target="_blank"]').attr("rel", "noopener noreferrer");
But why is this extension so bloated?
It loads the full jQuery library. For an attribute change!

This is the face of NPM right now.
So, Devon Govett (Parcel creator, hella lot of GitHub stars) offered to kind of standardize package.json, but faced nothing but angry NPM-CLI creator telling him that he’s a “rando from internet” and “why the fuck are you even speccing something, and why would anyone care”. No real professionally ethical discussion, no invitation to discuss things together with team, no even polite “no”.
Definitely the friendliest behavior possible, well done!

Hello devRant!!
Just released a small little app to share links to your PC directly from your device (Linker).
It uses a Java server running on your PC so there are no middle-men. Everything is open source and on my GitHub.
It's currently in alpha. Basically:
1. Run server on your PC (no UI ATM so run in a console) - defaults: 0.0.0.0:8090
2. Add the server IP-Port in the Android app
3. Share a link from any app through linker
4. Magic 😎
Below are the links if anyone likes the idea and wants to try it out (UI is crap I know! - I had very little time to work on it)

Took a web accessibility course somewhat recently. Here’s the list of typical accessibility problems according to those who use assistive technologies, from the most common to the least common:
1. CAPTCHA
2. Buttons and links that don’t work
3. Lacking/incorrect alt attribute
4. No input labels
5. Sudden layout shifts/content changes
6. Lacking/wrong headings
7. No keyboard access
8. Too many links
9. No skip link in header (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...)
10. Lacking/broken search
11. Complicated and/or long forms
12. No closed captions for videos
13. Bad grammar
14. Bad contrast
15. Custom checkboxes
16. Custom dropdowns
17. Font size
I never knew CAPTCHA was THE worst offender. I also never knew that font size was perhaps the least problematic aspect.11 -

What I like about devRant is the lack of usernames in the feed so people vote without judgement to the author. What was written matters more than who wrote it.
Obviously, I appreciate that it uses lightweight JavaScript. No JS bombs like mainstream social media. ( https://devrant.com/rants/9987051/... )
Also, posts have no titles and no formatting, just raw content. No clickbaiting and no bold italic screaming are possible. Posts have to get just straight to the point.6 -
To be honest, Windows Vista looks undeniably beautiful, no matter how unpopular it might was.
The user interface looked amazing. It looks decent even by today's standards. Windows XP looks more like a toy with its over-saturated colours, but Windows Vista appears elegant.
The stock wallpaper of Vista, "Aurora", is among the most beautiful out-of-the-box wallpapers I have seen.
Remember, Windows 7, arguably the most popular version of Windows, is a rebranding for a slightly altered Windows Vista Service Pack 2. Microsoft realized the reputation of the "Vista" trademark was ruined beyond repair, so they had to rebrand.

I just released a new Laravel package. The concept behind it is to use PHP for everything, so you no longer have to write HTML, CSS, or JavaScript. No more constant file and context switching. It also allows you to create and use components in the same way you would with JavaScript libraries like React or Vue.
It's called Malzahar. A magic PHP framework. Build reactive web apps without writing HTML, CSS, or JavaScript! Powered by Tailwind, Alpine, Laravel, & Livewire.

Mozilla has gone to shit long ago, but this week they somehow have outdone Microsoft on enshitification spree. One post is enough.
My two cents: https://techhub.social/@vintprox/...
Entire thread: https://techhub.social/@mozilla@moz...
Turns out those "Community Calls" they've hosted are just a ploy to damage control Mozilla's first steps into AI crap, back when they added prompts to MDN Web Docs. Fast-forward to today and even most loyal Firefox users should get enraged. Call me surprised (no pun intended).
So, Waterfox and Librewolf it is, then... Or Vivaldi, who cares at this point, really.2 -
Hey, privacy guys, I've recently decided to switch to DDG, and I just came across this DDG browser addon. It promises things like
"block all the hidden trackers", which is what AdBlock can also do, "force sites to use an encrypted connection", which makes no sense since most websites using https will redirect to https automatically, "Search Privately", which is already supported by them without installing the add-on, and "Decode Privacy Policies" which is the only feature that seems to be useful. Should I use it?3 -

Going through another department's API documentation and wrapper library where it has documented samples on how to use it. One of the samples specifically shows how to disable HTTPs requests for when retrieving customer info but it also states in the documentation to specifically NOT USE this disable function.

Was having problems on a VPN where my URL was constantly redirecting to https, after https was disabled, spent ages reconfiguring nginx, removing and adding nginx again with no luck. Eventually said fuck it, backed up everything of importance, destroyed the droplet and spun up a new one. Installed nginx and redone the DNS for the domain only for the same thing to happen. It was at that moment I discovered it was chrome caching the HSTS domain. I now have a long night ahead of me configuring the new droplet and restoring the backup data.

It's probably no news that I love Typescript's versatile and powerful generics. Today I found what is probably the most brilliant use of these tools to solve a real problem. Why useImperativeHandle in React is bad?
I have component A. I have component B which is a child of A.
I have button in component A that should change how component B is displayed.
Usual approach is to set state in A, change it upon click and pass that state as flag via props to B.
But there is another approach via exposing ref to component B using forwardRef() + useImperativeHandle().
And then calling method that belongs to B from A. Like this: bRef.current.changeDisplay()
https://stackoverflow.com/questions...
https://reactjs.org/docs/...
https://github.com/reactjs/...
People on SoF and Docs say that the first way is preferrable. But no one explain why.

It took me two days to finally get my discord bot to a specific voice channel in my guild/server. It turns out that there are two gateways and one https gateway. The https gateway, the main gateway with a websocket connection and a voice gateway (with udp I guess).
Guess that I will be able to let my bot speak at the end of this week.
The documentation of the Discord API is not so good. It contains examples that won't work even if correctly modified. That is why I joined the Discord API guild/server yesterday and they helped me find the solution to the "I get no response from the voice gateway".
It is only getting more complicated, but I love it. Maybe I love hurting myself lol.4 -

Why is GitHub's certificate showing up on semver.org? I can no longer access the site normally because of the browser warning. Who's responsible for this atrocity?
I checked with a VPN and without, same result. Can someone confirm?

Why does Google give their devs Crystal for free? -

Anyone here do animation?
So I'm developing this command-line animation program. It'll obviously only be for quick stuff
I'm thinking of accepting frames and an expression to order, overlay and diff/patch frames.
What kinds of things should I implement? I have done basically no animation ever.

I love online games and I always enjoy to play them whenever I have free time. So lately I started playing Run game and also Basketball legends and even Fireboy and Watergirl.

So my questions is, some of these games are built on the flash platforms. What will happen with these games when this platform will be disabled? I will no longer be able to play them???3 -
If we’re concerned about Big G tracking our location without our consent, I’m wondering why there’s actually less complains about SIM cards being trackable. They don’t even need an internet connection to get your location, and there’s no way to turn it off.

Sometimes people ask me why i don't like awwwards. Ok, lets give them another try. I just opened 40 SOTD and every single has some kind of loader from 2secs to 15secs. Than i opened this site: https://pianotriofest.com/. It has no loader! But still, i have no idea how to control it. 95% of them can't work without JS. So many flaws i can't even describe, so little quality. All of them reached 7 or 8 in usability. Awwwards judges are incompetent kids.3

Hey everyone!
I'm thinking of building an open-source React Native app for DevRant just as a fun project. I came across an unofficial API documentation and also a wrapper.
https://devrant-docs.github.io/
https://github.com/danillouz/...
If anyone has used these, kindly let me know your experience and which one is better.
PS: I have no intention to publish or earn money from this project. Anyone who is interested can jump into the project and help in making it better. If enough people want to use it, I can compile an apk/ipa for people to download later on.devrant react native devrant app open source community project community app github android devrant api ios -

Fuck social media websites that don't allow you to embed their content with a simple iframe
Good example 👍 :
<iframe src="https://youtube.com/embed/..." allow="..." allowfullscreen></iframe>
Bad example 👎:
<blockquote class="reddit-card" ...><a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/.../...">...</a></blockquote>
<script async src="//embed.redditmedia.com/widgets/platform.js"></script>
NO I DON'T WANT TO RUN YOUR 100kb JAVASCRIPT FILE WITH FULL PERMISSIONS ON MY WEBSITE JUST TO DISPLAY 1 SENTENCE AND 1 IMAGE. WHO KNOWS WHAT OTHER NASTY THINGS IT MIGHT LOAD IN IN THE FUTURE.
With an iframe it's at least somewhat contained.5 -
WTF is this bullshit ?

Basiclly you get an "F" if you don't provide these headers. But there is NO obligation for any browser to follow these headers. And if it is an attacker with custom software there is no point at all.20 -
Has anyone else used the Decimal module in python?
And if so do you know why it returns
"AttributeError: type object 'decimal.Decimal' has no attribute 'power'"?
According to the documentation
https://docs.python.org/3/library/...
...theres a power() function.
Doing
decimal.power()
Decimal.power()
power(x, y)
No matter how I call it, it always returns an error indicating power() doesn't exist and I'm scratching my head.4 -
