//long rant but worth it ;)
In our class, we had some writing in Word.
I was the smart PC guy in the class which everybody asked for info. Even the teacher sometimes asked me.
There was a girl in class which I didn't really like, because she had a snoopy attitude and thought she is a queen.
In MC Word you can hide the toolbar with the little arrow on the top right below the close button.
Somehow the girl hid the toolbar and didn't know to let it reappear again. After half a hour the teacher got to the next lesson.
She held her hand up and reported to the teacher that here PC has problems. After 10 minutes try & error from the teacher he even didn't get it.
Now the teacher started the rant and shout at her: "How did you even manage to do this? Did you upload a virus? I bet it is a virus! Do you know how much it costs to repair this pc? It's sure over 1000 $."
The rant continued for 15 minutes. After that I felt a bit guilty and even I didn't like that girl, but nobody deserves such a harsh treatment.
Without saying anything I went to the computer, clicked the little arrow and the problem was solved. The teacher didn't say anything to this topic. Just said we can go early.
Sometimes dump people make a elephant out of a fly, just because they don’t know it better…
Well the girl still stayed a cunt till the end of my scholarship.17 -
My girlfriend is amazing:
After a long uphill battle trying to finish a huge open source project I started months ago. She noticed I was getting a little deflated.
So she donated a small amount to the donation page to lift my spirits.
She wanted to do it secretly but didn't know that it wasnt anonymous.
The little things spur us on.40 -
Mom : My washing machine is not working.
Please fix it.
Me : I am a computer engineer.
Mom : You are an engineer though.
Me : That's not how it works.
.
.
.
2 hours and many YouTube tutorials later
Me : It's done.
Mom : Didn't I tell you you can do it.24 -
Management : "How long you think it would take?"
Me : "now this is a rough estimate, but I think building the back-end and database alone could take 6-months minimum"
Management : "WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? YOU ARE NOT SERIOUS"
me : "its a big proj..."
Management : "I thought it will be something like 10 days, already told the client it can be done"
me : "but we are not ready"
Management : "how are we not ready? we already have the virtual 3D shop, and we can use this ready-to-deploy eCommerce service as our data base "
... "you need to figure this out, this is not acceptable" he continued
* 2 Days Later -talking to my direct boss *
Boss : "since you don't know how to do it..."
me : "what ? I didn't say I can't do it, all I said it will take six months"
Boss : "yeah yeah, anyway there is this studio, a professional polish studio, we called them and they can do it, we will sign a contract with them, this will let you focus on the front-end. good?"
me : "well alright then"
Boss : "please write a doc, explaining everything needed from the backend"
-to me that was the end of it, took a long time to tell me they made the deal-
* 5 Months later *
- "Abdu, can you come here for a minute..."
- "yes boss?"
- "the document we asked you to do for the Polish studio, did you specify that we needed an integration with the API we are using for eCommerce?"
scared to death I answered : "why of course I did!"
I ran to my PC to check it out because I didn't know, I forgot because no one even comment on my doc. I check it out, and it was clearly explained... I got relaxed...
turns out they didn't even do what we asked them for. took them 5 months, and with no communication whatsoever. all their work was useless to us. complete dump waste.
----------------
never mentioned this until a year later... in a heat of moment when they were asking me to make an impossible task with no men and no time... I reminded them of this story... management didn't like it. but it was the truth. they didnt push this crazily this time13 -
I just had a nightmare.
I never became a developer. Instead I had a normal 9-5, didn't do work at home, slept well and spent my free time on social activities.
It was horrible.3 -
Me: *programming*
Team: *furiously discussing something outside of my expertise*
Me: *programming*
Team: *finally acknowledging my existance* "Yeah, dude. We are going to delete te project and start over because we can't fix this issue [which we have never ever discussed with you]."
Me: "What, that's stupid."
Team: "Well, do you have any bright ideas to fix it?"
Me: "Gimme until tomorrow."
Me: *programming*
Team: *doing absolutly nothing*
Me: "I fixed it!"
Team: "Why didn't you do that a week ago?"
Me: "You didn't ask..."
And so goes te story of how i was almost killed by an angry mob.13 -
"Sir, I fixed the recent bug"
"Great, what did you do?"
"I commented out the code that was causing it :)"
"Brilliant! You didn't forget to push the code to production, did you?"
"No Sir, I pushed it immediately"
"Marvelous! I'll arrange a promotion for you next month"5 -
I changed my Wi-Fi name to Syntax Error and made some changes to the configuration. I wanted to disable the admin page at the 2.4Ghz connection, but I got kicked out at 5Ghz as well. So I couldn't log in anymore and resetting the router didn't helped.
So I called the ISP if they can restore it to factory settings, but the guy on the phone didn't understand a thing I said. He said to me: "Sir I don't exactly understand what u say, but I can see an Syntax Error. Do you want me to fix it." And I laughed and I laughed.. I told him that's the Wi-Fi name but ofcourse he didn't got the joke. I called again and got someone else on the phone. He's resetting the router in a one minute call.
Had some fun this morning.11 -
This one guy wanted a website to sell illegal drugs or something. Oh and he only offered $20 for it. Obviously I didn't take it.
There was another guy who wanted a calculator in Python. I'm not sure why, but I think he was a student who wanted someone to do his homework. He offered $250 so I took it. Once it was done, he didn't pay and blocked me.
I quit freelancing about two months ago or something since I was sick of it. Most clients are disrespectful.20 -
Got a phone call: I got an error, what do I do?
Me: what kind of error?
Her: I closed it.
Me: what did it say?
Her: I don't know, it was a window with "ok" and "cancel"
Me: why didn't you read it?
Her: I don't understand this computer language.
/me dies a little inside.
There is nothing quite as stupid as people who refuse to read their own language as soon as it appears on a screen.
They make those things for a reason.
This happens too often.8 -
Someone hacked into a teacher's school district email, sending random stuff to the juniors.
When the principal sent an email saying any help in catching the perpetrator would be appreciated, a bunch of people from my classes were staring at me throughout the day.
Programmer != hacker
I hope they don't report me, I didn't do it. :/30 -
Production is down

Me to TeamLead: client called. Their prod is down!
TeamMate: did he say he didn't do anything?
Me:Yes

First time meeting girlfriends grandparents.
👴👵: So what do you do?
😎: I'm a software engineer ... So computers and stuff.
👴: Oh, can you have a look at my phone? There's that weird icon I don't understand ...
So within five minutes, I was their tech support. It was an icon for Android Nearby, btw and I didn't have an explanation ready.
That happened five more times this evening.14 -
Phone rings, IT guy next to me answer. I didn't listen what the user said.
IT: Hi, what can I do for you?
User: ...
IT: Ok, try with 123456
User: ...
IT: What's the name of the network?
User: ...
IT: Hmm, I don't know that network
User: ...
IT: HOW THE @#$% WOULD I KNOW YOUR HOME WIFI PASSWORD?!!!7 -
Java and C were telling jokes. It was C's turn, so he writes something on the wall, points to it and says "Do you get the reference?" But Java didn't.
C gets all the chicks and Java doesn't? Because C doesn't treat them like objects.
But I think C could at least give Java some pointers8 -
I made a Trello board and listed some tasks for me and my team.
My boss comes in, I show him the trello board to show how I organized our tasks.
He liked it, so I asked him if we can use it more frequently.
He replied: this is your code, do whatever you want.
I asked: my code?
He replied: yah didn't just build this webpage? This interactive task manager.
Me in shock: hold on you think I built trello?
Boss: oh ... You didn't ? It looks like something you'd do for your "front end masterbaution".
Me: oh wow, well... If that was the case I would've made $425 million on top of my salary.
Boss: looked at me like meh ~ and walked away...7 -
Fixing family / friends technical problems, episode 2.
Problem: "I lost my iPhone, I know there's a thing that lets you find it. Can you help?"
Debugging:
Me: sure, it's called "find my iPhone"
Friend: ah yes that's it. How do I use it?
Me: I'll show you, just login here and ... oh you didn't set it up?
Friend: Probably not, I don't know much about this computer stuff.
Me: ... when you setup your phone for the first time, it's a full screen thing that says "do you want us to locate your phone if it's lost. Yes / No". It's hardly writing an encryption algorithm now is it?
Friend: no it's not, but still I just didn't know. I probably clicked no for everything.
Me: ... says here you clicked yes for iCould ... and yes for photo sync ... so you read the one about your pictures but not about lost or stolen property ... nice.
Friend: ... so you can't find it then.
Me: No, natural selection took it away from you.
Friend: oh **** off.6 -
First internship (ranted about it before).
- Had to google translate their entire internal crm.
- pointed out major security flaws and got a speech saying that "I shouldn't think so high of myself and I didn't have the fucking right to criticize their products"
- every time the boss came to the office after a failed sales presentation, we (interns) got called the most nasty stuff. Yes. We didn't have anything to do with that at all.
- I had "hygiene issues": window to the south with 35-40 degrees (Celsius) feeling temperature and no airco. Deo didn't really make a difference but wasn't allowed to use it there anyways. Details: I have a transpiration issue so I sweat shitloads more than other people, that didn't help at all.
- nearly got fired because I had to to to the doctor in company time for a serious health issue.
- was (no kidding) REQUIRES to use internet explorer and we were monitored constantly.
Self esteem dropped through the fucking ground there.12 -
I've always hated Omegle, but my online friend forced me to do it, since she thinks it will help my social anxiety.
I had to send her screenshots as proof.
As much as I didn't want to, I had no choice. I was too scared to do the video chatting so I did the text chat instead. This is how the conversation went:
Stranger: Hey
Me: Hello.
Stranger: Wyd?
Me: Just programming, you?
Stranger: ur a programmer?
Me: Yes :)
*Stranger has disconnected.*57 -
Sales guy (s) : how many hours do you think this project will take?
Developer (d) : well I guess about 250 hours
(one week later)
S: I finally sold that project
D: nice! When do we start?
S: you'll start next week and it needs to be done one month later
D: 40 hours a week, times 4 weeks for one month is roughly 160 hours
S: yes
D: but I said I needed 250 hours
S: yeah but they didn't accept that so I sold it for less
...
(and no the scope didn't adjust to the new time frame)14 -
Had this a few weeks ago. A customer send an email telling that her emails didn't load anymore in the web interface.
Fair enough, tested it and indeed, no emails while there were definitely emails on the server and nothing in the logs or anything.
Replied saying that I'd look into it.
Few hours later she messaged back all happy about it working again and thanking me so much for all the effort I put into getting it to work again!
My thought at that moment: "oh shit completely forgot about that ticket... Wait it's working again? Oo I didn't do anything... 😅"
Love it how some things just solve themselves haha5 -
Fuck StackOverflow users who edit their question to include your answer.
Q: How to do X?
A: You need to init the Flufloxinator.
Q: How to do X? I've tried with a Flufloxinator but couldn't get it to work.
A: You need to init the Flufloxinator. Here's a fully working demo (pulled directly from the docs you clearly didn't read.)
Q: How to do X? Nevermind, I just had to init the Flufloxinator.9 -
User: oh! An error message.
Message : Problem XY has occurred. Do YX to fix the problem.
User: Ok I try everything except what it says. ...
Ok that didn't work. I ask the IT
IT: Have you tried what it says?
User: no I didn't know ...
IT:ok do it.
User: 0.o It worked! why do we pay you if it is so easy?
Every goddamn time 🤦🏻♂️3 -
boss: please look into tools that do X.
fullstackchris: Ah, here's a solution we can use!
boss: I don't want to use it because it is too complicated.
fullstackchris: ok, that's fine with me...
[one week later] boss: oh I found this nice site that does X, can we do X?
fullstackchris: YES, THAT'S EXACTLY THE SOLUTION I ALREADY FOUND, *AFTER* YOU ASKED ME TO LOOK FOR A SOLUTION, AND IN THE END YOU DIDN'T WANT TO DO IT. OH HAVE YOU CHANGED YOUR MIND?!?!

Went blank when interviewer asked me do I know KITT. I knew that he didn't mean Knight Rider, but I could not think of anything sensible in the few seconds I had time to answer the question so I answered NO. Interviewer said that it is a basic requirement for the job and it seemed that I lacked the basic skill needed for the job.
Needless to say I didn't get the job. Later that day as I was telling my friends about the interview they seemed really confused....
"... but you know GIT very well. You use it on a daily basis. Why did you answer NO ?"
Damn, blew my interview on pronounciation issue :/9 -
I literally cringed today when my neighbor wanted help installing an app, she didn't tell me it was her banking app... And the thing I needed to help with was logging in... So she told me her bank details...
Even though I said (multiple times) it was dangerous to do so, and that she can't just trust people with this kind of information...
WHY ARE PEOPLE SO GOD DAMN STUPID WHEN IT COMES TO SECURITY!7 -
It wasn't my curiosity that introduced me to programming. Actually, it was my mother.
It was about six years ago, when I'd told her I'd like to make video-games, like all kids do. She didn't just nod and go about her way. She found a free course that taught programming to kids my age and immediately enrolled me. Looking back, it was surely the best thing she'd done for me, because it gave me a purpose and a future to look forward to.
The course was interesting. We learned the basics of C++, then moved on to harder topics like algorithms and data types. But more and more, I was beginning to feel left behind. Like I didn't belong there. It didn't help that I only programmed on the course, with no practice back home.
I felt scared of the future. Thought I didn't have what it takes to become a programmer. I might have broken the last straw when I started playing truant and went to McDonald's to pass the time. Because every time I did go to the course, I felt stupid and anxious. So I simply skipped.
Time passed. I got more depressed, became more antisocial, my self-esteem took a nosedive. And when it comes to depression, people always seek an escape path.
I got my escape in fiction. Started reading books, tried writing stories, and it got to the point where I asked my mother if I could become a writer and not a programmer.
And guess what? She said, "Do what brings you happiness. This is your life."
It's funny, that such a silly line stopped and got me to think. Turned out, I didn't program for fun, for myself or for my career. I'd done it for my parents, for their expectations and I was scared that in failing, I'd become a loser in their eyes.
I dropped out of the programming course. Not because it sucked, but because I wasn't going there for myself, but for my parents. But I didn't quit programming. No, I watched countless tutorials, youtube videos, browsed StackOverflow, read some books, coded every day, and now I can say without hesitation, that I love programming. I'm hooked. And I don't want to stop.
If you've read this so far, I'm sorry for my rambling. I will now leave you with only one tip: If you decided to do something, do it for yourself. Forget about parents, expectations, career, future, time or money and do it only because you want to. Because nothing else matters. Only your happiness.7 -
Some of you might have seen it already, those who didn't just have to.
One of the best rants I've read lately.
"Our security auditor is an idiot. How do I give him the information he wants?"

I built a gaming PC and have been addicted to it for the last few months (rocket league, subnautica, Xcom2 mostly) and my Girlfriend complained that we didn't do anything anymore... solution? I built her one too (now she won't stop playing prison architect!)
I think I might just have to marry her.19 -
It is very hard to make me mad.
But if you imply I "didn't do anything" or that my job is "easy" because all I do is just ”sit in front of a computer” 9 to 10 hours a day then you can go fuck yourself.15 -
[SO] Can you unload the dishwasher?
[Me] Of course.
*5 hours later*
[SO] Why is the dishwasher still not done ?
[Me] Why would it be ?
[SO] I asked you to unload it ....
[Me] No, you asked if I CAN do it, and I am able to do it, you didn't ask me to actually do it.
[SO thinking] God, why did I marry a fucking programmer.....12 -
Some dude in my university used Squarespace to make a webstore, presented it as his final exam in Web developement and passed with flying colors.
They didn't even look up the code or anything, just gave him max score and that's it. I hate my school...
Edit: a friend just told me that the guy didn't even made the site. He paid someone else to do it.
I honestly don't know what makes me more sad14 -
Project manager, a few months ago: "why did you do this task? It's all wrong. It's a backend task, not a frontend task so you shouldn't have done it. Don't do it again."
PM, today, regarding the same task in a different project: "why didn't you do this task? The project isn't complete without it. It isn't right. You should have done it."
Are you fucking serious? If we do it it's wrong, if we don't do it it's wrong too. So why should I bother? Seriously, fuck you you piece of shit.2 -
if i learned one thing from my internship it's "Just do it".
I always wanted to master parallax but didn't dare to. My boss then forced me into learning it. I made my own parallax script that day.4 -
Management knows shit about managing.
They ask us to do x and one month later they have the first meeting to discuss it... They didn't even plan it, only asked.
Its like asking a hamburger at Mc Donalds and letting the kind of hamburger for when it arrives:
"Hey, I want a hamburger"
Mc. Employee: "Which one , sir?"
"Doesn't matter, when it arrives we decide about it, just go on, chop chop"5 -
Me: "Hey <coworker>, I got this mistake do you know why?"
Coworker: "Seems to me like you didn't put <thing> in there"
Me: "No way, I just edited it here"

"Oh, I didn't save that"
*saves file*
"Oh hey, it works now 😅"

React-Redux's connect() function inspired me to create the coolest way to add numbers in JS:
<script>
function add(num) {
return function(otherNum) {
return num + otherNum
};
};
console.log( add(2)(3) ); // Outputs 5
</script>
I didn't know you could do that. Just found it out!12 -
Today I ran a Killer-Batch-Script on a School-PC.
After I run it, the PC instantly started to lag af and stopped working.
So after about 1 minute, I force-shutdown'd the PC.
But when I restarted it, it didn't boot.
(Boot-Disk was somehow not found)
I quickly stood up, went to another PC and pretended like nothing happened...
Never (NEVER) do that with you own PC.
Here's the script if you are interested:24 -
Yesterday I installed windows on the laptop of my parents. I thought no biggie I'm just going to do something else while it installs. AND THEN IT STARTS TALKING. WTF!!!
Also it said I can turn the voice of BUT THE FUCKING BUTTON DIDN'T WORK.

YouTube, I called it. I freaking called it! This is an old story, it was back when Cryptominer via browser became a thing.
Me: "How long do you thing it will take until YouTube advertisements will contain cryptominer?"
IT WAS A F*CKING JOKE YOUTUBE, I DIDN'T KNOW YOUR ADVERTISEMENT POLICIES ARE REALLY THAT BAD!
A month later, after I said it to an friend, I had increased lags with literally anything I was doing. After some days of research (because I didn't pay that much attention to it at first), I could pin down the cause to my YouTube tab in my browser (because I listen to 24/7 music livestreams). And I was like:
Me: "I bet this is because of cryptominer. I bet this is because of cryptominer."
Guess what. About two weeks later YouTube confessed. Cryptominer ads were possible.
I wonder how much money these companies made...4 -
Random dev online: Any chance you could help me figure out how to use something the company you worked for wrote? I need to do XYZ
Me: I didn't write it but sure. Theres a doc here about the full process of doing XYZ <link>
Random dev 5 seconds later: But how do I actually do it? The link doesn't show how to do it via code.
Me: You'll find if you actually read it, that it does. Because I checked. Good day2 -
At a game dev class. Class starts and everyone is already doing something and I don't know what. I hear the some guy telling us about what to do with those "assets he sent us". Apparently everyone got a mail with the assets we'll be using and an instruction video for the day. Everyone but me, that is. I call the guy over and I tell him I didn't get the email. "Well why didn't you get the email?" HOW THE FUCK SHOULD I KNOW? You didn't tell us we'd be getting one so I couldn't exactly tell you to resend it. So now I'm just sitting here watching the rest of them work awkwardly...(first rant btw)4

My dad's old MS-DOS computer (can't remember specs) when I was 5 or 6 years old. This got me into gaming. I always had to ask him to execute the games I wanted to play cause I didn't know how to do it. One of the first games I ever played was Wolfenstein 3D. Was so scary I didn't want to exit the first room :D4

Him: I am a software engineer.
Me: That is great, do you use specific technology?
Him: Multiple, but my basic is YouTube.
Me: Sorry, I didn't get it? You mean YouTube API?
Him: No need, I have a channel on YouTube... And podcast a lot about software engineering.
Me: So you don't write code anymore?
Him: I didn't, engineering is more than writing codes.
Me: Yes it is....13 -
So I pretty much deleted 90% of the project I'm working on and pulled two all nighters to reimplement the features differently because it didn't feel "good enough"... fuck this neverending "I can do better" feeling 😭😭6

Someone saw that i didn't use mouse while typing code and asked me how do i do that and i told him that i just use vim. He didn't know what it is and i told him some things that it has a learning curve and stuff and he told me that he will definetely look into it.

So a few months ago I started dating. I love my girlfriend with all my heart, but something has been bothering me a bit. I can no longer easily do my day-to-day work. Whereas previously I would be productive at any time I want, now it's more of a "I can work whenever she wants to work". It's hard to balance and even harder to actually get to it.
Previously I would stay with her during the day, and then wake up in the night to do all the household chores, learn her language and if I can get to it, even improve some of my shitty code. Needless to say, she didn't like that I didn't sleep with her and it's not exactly healthy either - I barely slept at all.
How do you balance work/relationship without throwing sleep time in the mix? Both work and girlfriend are at home for me.7 -
At the age of 9, I was getting frustrated that my Commodore 64 didn't always respond the way I wanted. So I had to teach it to do better. BASIC was the language. Plenty of GOTOs. In the end I got so much connected to GOTO idiom that I used it extensively in my C++ OO exam in college. Needless to say, the professors were stunned and blatantly disgusted with my code.1

Work: there is little work for our freelancer we're getting rid of him at the end of the year
Me: are you sure, that will put a lot of work on my schedule.
Work: I'm sure you can handle it
*two weeks later*
Work: have you finished feature xyz yet
Me: nope had a server crash today so pushed it back
Work: why didn't you get "free lancers name here" to do it for you
Me: I could of if you didn't fire him, he could of also done the other features you want too
Work: ah ok1 -
My first dev job didn't start out as a job. I started out writing a database querying program just to see if I could do it, and the software ended up being purchased, and me along with it! Seems like such a long time ago now...

I rage quit my last job, I didn't want to do 'my last comand'. So I requested my 15 days of vacation from the previous year I had at thursday. And when my boss aproved it I delivered my auto fired letter at friday. Since then when someone just leaves in one day they call it 'to do a Dani' in honor to me XD

My Javascript professor explained Boolean to me using an allegory about pizza: "If I give you pizza, under what condition do you eat it? Your hunger must be true or false. Boolean does the same thing, but with things less exciting than pizza."
It didn't even begin to make sense to me until it became about pizza.
I vote for ALL future computer classes to be taught in terms of pizza.12 -
Dad: And what do you code?
Me: Websites, some useful desktop applications and some Android apps.
Dad: Why didn't I notice them?
Me: Because I am not making money with it and can't afford advertising.
Dad: Then make money with it.

Around 2 months ago, I worked at Subway. AMA (just joking. Don't do it.)
I worked there for a week (I could write a lot about the environment) and quit it because of how entitled, lazy, rude and crazy the boss was.
The boss was the usual crackhead woman straight from the dumpster.
She used the Subway Instagram and Facebook pages as her private personal pages.
She told us to follow the Instagram page, like everything and comment on every post.
I didn't do it. Instead I shared the page with my friends and we laughed our asses off.
End of story.6 -
Today I spent ten minutes because I didn't see the difference between 'cmp' and 'cpm'
Do I have a slight case of dyslexia? :O

New dev: I need help with this issue. I've been debugging it all day.
*2 hours later*
Me: spent a while debugging it, eventually came across a stack overflow post that says you can't do that.
New dev: oh I saw that earlier, didn't think it applied.
Me: ... why ... accepted answer "It is not possible to do this, this way".
New dev: hhhmm, ok
... get the fuck out of this building immediately.3 -
I love my Nexus 6P but goddamn do I hate its battery. Shuts down randomly at 25%, lasts only half a day, and a lot of other crap. So I want to replace it, bought a new battery from AliExpress but didn't buy any tools for it.. so I'll have to make do with what I currently have. On iFixit I found that the replacement process is apparently quite difficult as it's glued in (God I fucking hate that) and can only be safely removed by heatgunning it (which I don't have a heatgun for). Are the results worth the risk of breaking it? Is it possible to pull it out while cold, without too much risk of breaking stuff or damaging the battery? I've got experience in disassembling 2 previous phones and one of them had the battery glued in as well.. and I didn't break the battery (in fact I'm still using it) but it was very difficult.. and this is my daily driver. So yeah 😶20

I tried to do a sudoku solver, but it didn't work...
I wanted it to succeed without backtracking or bruteforce, so I tried solving it in a human way.
I ended up with some if-else AI that couldn't do anything at all5 -
Duuude!? What the fuck?!
First weekend off so I can slack around & now this?! O.o
I don't know what I expected.. I didn't evem do anything to it (yet)..6 -
Not a rant, just a tought:
I was thinking, how amazing is to work at software industry, I mean, is there any other field of work where you can start without knowing little to nothing of the thing you are going to work with?
Got hired to work with a friend of mine in his uncle's company, started as a technician, providing support to clients, after that, started coding little windows applications using c#, even tought, I didn't know shit about it, time passed and we needed a mobile application, then when I realized I was already coding for Android in Java even though I didn't know nothing about it too.
It's just, you can do whatever you want if you will... It's amazing! I love doing what I do. -
On a 5 hour bus ride for which the company advertised that they have WiFi. Technically they did, it just didn't seem to be connected to anything. (it was but it was unusable). I tried logging into the router as i always do and one default "admin" password later i was in.
I didn't want to mess up anything too badly, however i did change the wpa password to "YouShouldMakeThisABitMoreSecure"5 -
Q: Tell me what date types do you know.
A: Excuse me!? Date types?
Q: Eh, I see you didn't get it...12 -
What the flying git did I just do.
So here I am, finishing my billionth.. ok maybe not that many, feels like it some days.. task so I do the following:
git add /path/to/file.ext
git commit -m "yay done for the day" /path/to/file.ext
- yes I specify the files in a commit, I've had bad days in the past, plus I can work on multiple files at a time -
But anyway...
Then all of a sudden 20 other files are now staged for commit 🧐🤪🤭😱🤯
Wtf!
Guess I'll be sorting this mess out before doing a push tomorrow morning.rant back to git bash i go yes i use terminal inside vscode vscode being stupid again i didn't do it git mind of its own1 -
Instant messaging apps are a burden if your client is a b*tch.
Client: hey, I want you to put some more images on this page.
Me: Oh, okay, send them all and I will do. *provides email*
Client: Cool, will do that in an hour.
*closes facebook*
[two hours later, waiting for the email and wondering why I didn't receive it yet]
*opens facebook*
*is greeted by 45 new messages from client*
*opens to see 45 images sent one by one for me to use it on the webpage*

I just had a nightmare.
I never became a developer. Instead I had a normal 9-5, didn't do work at home, slept well and spent my free time on social activities.
It was horrible.2 -
Because MS is dropping support and updates for Windows 7, I finally decided to install something else! Wanted to do it earlier, but I was clearly to lazy to do it.
I choosed Ubuntu, I know a lot of you hate it, but it is the one i'm used to, and i didn't want to search too complicated25 -
In my first year of college right now, and on the first test we had to write some C# ConsoleApplications. We got instructions of what we have to taken as input, what we had to do with it and output it to the console.
I've tested them all and they all work correctly, which was the main objective. I have used the correct data structures, but I didn't get top mark. Instead, I got lower because "I didn't do it her way".
WELL F*CK YOU TOO!!! I hope this is not how every test/exam goes6 -
Already wrote about wk92 but i have to add:
STOP MAKING ME ATTEND COURSES SO I AM EVEN ALLOWED TO TAKE EXAMS.
Like what the hell. You know when it comes to networking i'm doing okayish, coding straight A and then there is maths, let's not talk about it. BUT FFS I WAS NOT ALLOWED TO TAKE 2 OF MY CODING EXAMS THIS SEMESTER CUS I DIDN'T VISIT 2-3 EVENTS OF IT.
I am a coder. I aspire being a coder. I study software development. I just need to prove myself and some dudes can do it. Let me do my thing.
Btw, there weren't any mandatory events for maths. Of course. Why should there be. Yeah okay7 -
I really enjoy hearing:

My roommate: why do you look so mad.
Me: stupid program is broke
My roommate: didn't you fix it yesterday?

I just can't remember the last time I typed
www.
in the browser URL bar.
There were times when a webpage spits out a 404 error when we didn't typed www.
Can anyone explain this?
Is the web standard changed, or is the browser doing it for me secretly?
And do you guys/gals still type that www?16 -
How the fuck are you guys so unable to do anything without Stack Overflow? I didn't evem notice that it was down...11

In my country, almost every college student is expected to finish their degree and apply for an internship, with some universities forcing them to do it and making it a requirement to finish their studies.
Now, this wouldn't be so bad if almost every internship employer in the country didn't expect you to work for free. Seriously, I can estimate 80% of the internships pay you NOTHING. WTF.
Fortunately this is not the case for CS, but every time I tell somebody I recently started an internship, they will ask me: "Oh, but they don't pay you anything, do they?". Of course they pay me! I wouldn't be going to an office every day for 4 hours to do someone else's work if they didn't!!
Why the fuck is it even legal to employ somebody and not pay them a cent, just because "it will look good on your resume"?? And why do people still accept this shit??
Is is like that on other countries as well?2 -
There has probably not been any situation when I would feel more stupid than now.
I just did a refresh of windows. It means quite a lot of work, as I need to do all the WSL related config and so on.
And I did it because I'm an extremely smart man and I didn't check that my primary screen was turned off.
I WONDER WHY I COULDN'T SEE SHIT1 -
First time spending my lunch break outside this year. Didn't realize how much I missed it. It really helps to breath some fresh air when you got a bad day in office. How do you guys normally spend you lunch break?11

Oh don't worry I just wasted a whole day, it's not like I had homework to do, projects to finish and VM's to install and I busted my sick ass trying to make it all work on my Linux machine which is now tainted with software I didn't even want to install and useless docs while having a 105 fever. It's all fucking worth it because at the end, of the next day, oh wait...you didn't even install the updates properly, fuck you windows! I swear the first thing I'll do after graduation will be getting rid of you!!5

"Wait, we're logging all web traffic now?"
Me: You're the security engineer, you asked him to do it!
"I know but I didn't think he would actually do it!"

Back in the late 90's when I got started in my career - had a boss that didn't known the difference between Java and JavaScript. I made the mistake of trying to explain the difference. If you can keep the boss in the dark and get away with it - do it. Ignorance is bliss.1

My coworker "fixed" a bug. Then an issue was reported to me. He refactored something that we both used(And my code was already working right). I asked him about it. He didn't care about it and also was upset about my question. A question that I didn't ask in a "rude" way.. The worst: the refactor only required 30 seconds to do!!!
What!!!
Please guys if you refactor do it right or don't do it at all. Have a nice day9 -
My team lead be like when we're in a meeting with the boss:
He: I'll have a working session with her, we'll brainstorm on how to come up with a better design and improve such and such feature, once that's done, we would call you to have another meeting.
Boss: sounds good, I'm looking forward to it.
Me: *internally rolls eyes...*
He: thank you everyone.
.
*meeting done*
.
.
.
couple of minutes later, I get a message from him:
He: hey, it turns out I'm busy and I can't have that session with you, do come up with a new idea/design and share it with me.
Me: .... *fuck you, like you didn't know you were busy before making that fake promise*

Just realized, we can double tap on any post here...and it will be added as ++. Like we do in instagram.
How I didn't knew about this from so long.😅1 -
Did an app for my college.
Everyone liked the features in it.
But when it came to the money part, (I didn't ask the actual cost, I only asked then 10% of actual standard cost) they were like improve it more, do this do that ("for free").
I held onto "If you're good at something, don't do it for free".
Just wasted my time in developing that.2 -
I wrote a Blender plugin that uses vector math, matrices, calculus, trigonometry, and likely other types of math. There's recursion, filesystem access, image processing, interface logic, and on and on.
And worst of all - other people are expected to use it, so there's added pressure to do a good job.
Oh, the hours I spent trying to figure out why the imported geometry looked like an exploded mess. Fumbling around with mathematics I didn't fully understand was exhausting. Finding help was impossible at times because I didn't have the vocabulary to even describe the problems I was having. And getting it to complete an import before the heat death of the universe was not easy.
Every time I made progress and thought I was done, I would discover a bug that other importers didn't have, leaving me to sift through languages that definitely aren't Python to see if I could reverse engineer the logic they used.
I almost gave up a few times, but didn't.
Now I have something that, while not used by many people, works very well, is very efficient, and doubles as a palette cleanser when I need to do something for fun or for a challenge. Plus I learned a lot along the way.4 -
I was underpaid and doing a job I didn't really like, I stuck with it for 6 months and told my boss about it. He didn't do anything about it. Our head of department told us at a meeting that as a young professional, you own your career path. I quit the following month and all of a sudden, my boss was ready to listen to him. I told him it was too late, I own my career path and this isn't good for it.

I started programming 2 years ago. I didn't know what to do with my life after high school, so I went to an event where you can meet students. I ran across the IT schools section, wearing a GEEK sweater, and almost immediatly, 5 students were right in front of me to talk about their school.
One hour later, I said "yeah why not", even if I didn't know ANYTHING about programming.
One or two weeks later, I took the entrance exam, and one month later I knew that I passed.
I learnt the bases when I entered in Sept. 20143 -
My internet went out the other day and I genuinely didn't know what to do with myself! Pacing around my apartment until it came back 2 hours later.
I think I need to get out more or at least get some friends but, you know... people.4 -
It's fucking annoying when your roommate feels the need to play their music so loudly you can hear it through the walls. That's not fucking necessary... I listen to music all the time without it being that loud. And if I want loud music, I do the polite thing of putting my headphones in. This shit didn't bother me early on, but it's getting on my last fucking nerves these days.
I'm trying to do homework and can barely focus because of the constant sound of bass non-stop.6 -
I goofed up and forgot the WHERE clause in my UPDATE query. Accidentally all of production possibly updated because we don't do test databases. I think it didn't actually go through because I cancelled it but now I need to restore a backup and compare data. Which means explaining this to the co-owner who can help me with a restore. I'm mortified, more so because it was a stupid thing to do to begin with.4

This is exactly why I didn't want to give the client my mobile number.
It's a Sunday morning, and he's messaged me asking for me to do something today.
Hopefully by boss is sympathetic with the week I've had and lets me ignore it.1 -
My mom woke me up at 6am because the tv sound was not working..
I tried almost everything, use the tv control, mute button, menu tv configuration..
even checked different inputs using my Nintendo switch and super Nintendo's and it didn't work..
Couldnt do shit.. so I had to use the old reliable!
turned off the tv and then turned on ..
It was like magic! fuck everything!3 -
"Did you really buy a macbook to put ubuntu on it?"
"Wow why would you use such an overpriced piece of garbage just to put linux on it?'
"You made the worst choice of hardware to put ubuntu on"
Maybe, just maybe, I didn't fucking buy it myself and I got it from work? Maybe I didn't fucking pay a dime to get a laptop to put ubuntu on it? Ever considered that I got it for fucking free and have the privilege to do what I want with it?
Go fuck yourself if your first assumption is that I would actually buy a macbook just to erase MacOS from it12 -
One of our customers asked us (a while back) to create a nice interface for their label printer (preferably integrated in their web cms)
So we started developing and after two weeks (we were almost done) they canceled the request, payed for the worked ours and said that another company was willing to do it faster (even though we were almost done)
So that was about half a year ago, meanwhile I've migrated to Ubuntu
Today I heard we have to do it again because the other 'faster' company wasn't faster, and didn't live up to the expectations
I do not have the code anymore... My colleagues also do not have the code anymore... It was removed to keep our coded clean, not sure if it's on git (the guy who workers on the part that's has a repo doesn't always commits...)
I've worked on on a standard node js script (which I didn't create a repo for because the project was canceled)
... Amazing4 -
I've had it with these automatic updates that I didn't ask for, especially when I'm trying to switch my machine off!
How about asking me first if I want that damn update?
Why do they have to be shoved down my throat?!
That's it! I'm switching my OS!8 -
Oh boy IntelliJ IDEA is gonna spoil me bad
This postfix completion feature just blew my mind. I didn't know I wanted this until I found out about it.
I missed a proper IDE for a long time. VSCode is fine but holy shit I forgot how much a good IDE can do for you.5 -
I'd love it if the number of ++ s a rant has, to only be shown after you either ++ the rant or open it. thing is, I found my self scrolling through my algo feed and looking at the ++ count before the post itself. I was judging the post by the number of ++s it has. which made me realize that I skipped a couple of posts that I didn't read and that I could've liked.
what do you guys think about this?12 -
So my uncle just bought an old hp server round that he didn't use at work anymore and I have no fucking clue what to do with it 😂6

My PM frequently asked me what I'm doing as a Programmer in my Team because he wants to understand us better - I first started out explaining him every Detail of our work - he didn't get it - I then simplified it and told him We are creating the functionality and Gameplay features - he didn't get it. I then finished our conversations with telling him what I do like that "I drink coffee and I know things" - he was satisfied and I could work on2

Four beers with an expiry date of 2022. What do you do? Easy, drink three so you don't care about the expiry date of the fourth and enjoy.
Didn't tag it as joke because it's seriously what I just did12 -
I work in a dev company. One of our clients hired us to help them out as their devs are failing with their deadlines.
I had to expose app services via an api. I did it. Client company devs didn't like the way I did it as I rewrote their datamodels and declared them as api-use-only. I was demanded to return bkend services' data structures.
I didn't agree and waited until deadline to submit my code.
Now they are honestly thanking me for what I did as I've saved them from a forever-mutating-api-and-angry-integration-customers hell.
Not sure whether should I be happy or worried. I forced my solution onto them. It's not proffessional. But yhe customer is happier now than it would've been.
What do you do in such situations?6 -
I JUST SPENT A PAINFUL TWO HOURS TRYING TO FIND OUR WHY MY EXCEPTIONS WERE BEING THROWN AFTER EVERY SINGLE INPUT THE USER ENTERED...
I commented out the try catch, it worked, I commented out the throw and it worked, so I uncommented them both and it worked again? WHY DIDN'T IT WORK BEFORE Y U DO DIS2 -
So we got a new developer
And his first task's PR is a pure copy paste off a random website that I managed to find in less than 1 minute of searching for the feature on Google
And I mean that's cool and all, because we all do that sometimes
But my oh my, he didn't even bother changing it one bit, hell it didn't even fit the purpose and it was weirdly imported as a separate class instead of it being added as an extension on the existing base class
Like wtf man, at least put some effort into the 5 minutes it took you to find, copy and paste that in3 -
So accidentally deleted all of the data on my HDD including the OS I was building... But I didn't commit the changes to GitHub so now I'm stuck trying to rebuild it... Fucking cunt!
And now I'm back in a rut of wanting to code but have no idea what to do, all the games I start I end up abandoning4 -

Yay! It didn't terminate! No, I do NOT want to terminate the server thank you.
Vue CLI: *terminates anyways*4 -
So today Windows Explorer crashed and so my task bar didn't work. I open task manager, selected the process and pressed restart only for it to take out my whole desktop...
Just what I wanted it to do... Thank you... -_-5 -
Ok, I see a lot of hate about PHP and I always wondered what is the experiences people have had with PHP to like or dislike it.
Personally, PHP was the first programming language I learnt and used, so it has it's special place in my heart.
I acknowledge that it has it's pros and cons (as any other programming language). My hypothesis is : People have used php in a project they didn't like or didn't turned out how they expected. Or they used php for something it wasn't ment for.
Do people hate php because it's a trend ? How many php haters have good reasons to hate it that much ?
I'm just curious to know the thoughts and experiences (good or bad) of other devs.11 -
I've been teaching the new interns. Some are progressing really nicely and understanding the caveats and concepts of the frameworks, but others are a big pain in the kernel
I sent them some code outlining what they would do, filled with `// TODO`'s. Every day I would ask them if they had any questions and they just said they were having some progress. At the end of the week, they say "the code that you sent me doesn't work. I ran it and it didn't do what you said it would do." Well that was your job! My bad for having high expectations I guess1 -
The week where you have so much to do on different projects, that even if you manage to work on all od them a bit it feels like nothing has been accomplished.
The point of being so tired that even the mildest sickness feels rediculously awful.
And it's friday. I manged to do some work for one of my bosses but the work I want to do didn't really get done and now I have two meetings in which I can say I started doing xyz but couldn't finish it due to bugs and exhaustion. And for the other project I wrote documentation.
Well.
T_T4 -
Finally, after 42 days of in development, I can proudly say my game reached Alpha stage. All core mechanics are in place. I hope I'll be able to say the same thing for Beta in next 6 weeks too!
To be honest, I could do it better, but I didn't had much time.11 -
I told my client that I'm attending a conference and I'm out for few days.
He wished me well.
He then proceeded to write me messages and emails each day to "make sure" if I didn't work on his shitty website.
I can't do it anymore I'd love to finish this and ditch him asap...2 -
sudo rm -rf *
Just started out on linux, learning the ins and outs. All I wanted to do was remove two directories. Thankfully it was a fresh install, didn't lose anything important.
A valuable lesson was learned that day. 😂2 -
Pirated MS office was so much better than the paid one. I never once had a banner pop-up and tell me that i didn't have a license 😖
Now, that i do have the license, the banner has made it a habit to pop-up whenever i work on something important 🤦6 -
Hi guys, I'm back!
I spent some time not using DevRant, I got a new phone and thought it would be better not to install it for some days. I had to do a lot of stuff for school these days and didn't want to geht distracted by amazing devs posting cool rants. So here I am, happy to see you all again. (Or at least your avatars)12 -
I didn't WANT to do it, but he left me no choice. He was about to tell everyone the secret that I'd kept for such a long time. I couldn't allow him to do that.
I'm still debating whether it was me who pulled the trigger, I never wanted to, but I did, it changed me.
Now I've been living with his wife, his children, in his house, with his parents and family. I've been to countless reunions and everybody seems to enjoy having me around, claiming that I've 'changed' and become a better person.
My old self seems to have faded away into nothingness, I don't know if I should be happy with that. But I do know one thing,
If such a situation were to come up one more, I'd do it again.1 -
So one of my co-partner in a website development business we started, took up back end responsibilities from me, didn't complete a simple form handling in 3 months and then complained the 3rd partner that it was my work and I didn't do it and now I am the bad guy.
FUCK YOU BRO!6 -
Now my MacBook didn't boot up until I plugged in the charger. Even tho it was 90 percent charged. Now why did it do that 😢2
-
At my job we have these days where we have to BUG-BASH, meaning we do any stupid thing on the software to test it and find bugs.
I hate it.
I didn't sign to be a QA.2 -
I still do exist, long time no see, fellow Devs! How is it going?
Didn't posted here in long time. Anything new relevant? I just started studying at an university. Hoping to post again here.14 -
I was sick the entire week, told my boss about it. I was really enthusiastic about the work and also didn't want to let other people down, so I went, even though I didn't have to.
Today this asshole screams at me for being late and goes on about the broken trust between us etc.
This motherfucker. I showed up, for a whole week, in pain, despite not having to do so. I had to punch the bathroom walls for ten minutes in order to get rid of all the anger.
TL;DR:
Never do more than required, it will absolutely come back to hit you.5 -
So apparently google doesn't give a fuck about your money. Yes I didn't use it right now, i purchased the dev account so I will be able to publish later when I need it and already used it in the past. How is it that they will close an account that you've payed for for inactivity?
ps.: Now I understand why has the play store full garbage apps. I will do that too...
pps: I know it's only 25$ but I still payed that to have access in the first place2 -

...i realized i can actually pattern-match like this (as in, sequence of elements (including "whatever") instead of just head::rest in F#...
...from watching a talk about prolog.
like "wait... prolog can do this when pattern-matching? that seems very useful. i think i tried to do that in F# but it didn't work, which seems stupid... I'm gonna go try it again".
and sure enough =D
i think i really am gonna like F# if i find the time and resolve to break through how its different mode of thinking stretches my brain in ways it hasn't been stretched for a long time =D6 -
We rewrote the whole thing, except for iFraming some old pages in. We had to, the system was fucking awful and couldn't cope with any of the new mission critical requirements.
Client didn't understand the scope. Our project leader somehow snuck it in and we worked on it for months. We were sure we'd be kicked off the whole project... Somehow things didn't crash and burn. How it didn't blow up defies rational thought and the laws of physics. The new system worked, the client was happy, and boss made a lot of money.
Lead dev worked weekends for what feels like an eternity, it really was his baby and no one else on our company could have done it. It's where I finally learned how to do things the proper way; DDD, unit testing and TDD, architecture, building strong components in front-end, you name it. Before that I had a great nose for code smells and how not to do stuff, but now I got to see a proper system for the first time. It was glorious.
Then lead dev left and the system degraded quite a bit because new team didn't keep to the architectural patterns or general best practices. But we had a good run.1 -
So my friend who's learning to program didn't really feel like he accomplished much in a uni assignment since he googled most stuff, copy-pasted and tweaked the code a bit. When I told him that's actually the way we do things he found it the funniest thing ever.13
-
Today was my 3rd day on the job and half way through it (right after my new laptop landed on my desk) I was fired. I tried to work for two days without a computer. All I could do was hover over the one other developer whose been there 3 weeks and who didn't meet the launch deadline. The founder had a meltdown over it this morning.10
-
"What the fuck did you do to my phone?" has got to be the most irritating line from a user ever. I didn't touch your phone, so just because I know IT that means I messed up your phone? That's stupid.1
-
If you also programm in your free time you probably know this kind of situations.
Situation: I'm currently creating my own PHP framework (I know there are plenty... I do it for "fun").
The database Connector Class wasn't working so after an eternity (around 2h) I just went to bed.
11pm: My Eyes open. I'm sure I just solved the problem in my dreams. (Spoiler alert: I didn't)
2am: I go to bed again. It didn't work.
Next day: I open the file add a missing required file. It works. I'm now tired AF and feel like dying and above all: I now get all the suicide PHP memes. Good night guys. I'm getting some sleep.3 -
Had a feedback meeting with one of my senior devs today, it went really well and allowed me to get a new view on some things, like some common behavior patterns I do. Really happy about it :3 If you didn't have something like this yet, go for it, it's definitely worth the time ^^
-
Had my first evaluation session today, where people use my software for an hour and see if they like it. Mixed feelings.
For one thing there are indeed bugs here and there, but a lot of the things that people say are missing are there! They just didn't see it.
In times look this I see I still need to do better painfully clear.5 -
I know I'm gonna get downvoted to hell but the only reason I didn't tried Vim is because thay it has such a shitty logo. It's like stuck in 80s. It's seriously bad. I used to be a designer so I can safely say, design or at least how things look do matter sometimes.14
-
I just hate it when a classmate just waits for you to do the work first so that they can copy it.
This recent project we had was a pretty good example. Most of them didn't know what to do while I on the other hand actually READ the documents for the technology we were using so it gave me sort of a head start. They eventually asked me to do one part of their work first so that they can copy off of what I did and I mean EVERYTHING. A pure copy paste of my code while only changing the variable names. Genius1 -
Last update on my student job.
Today is my last day. Even thought it was tough sometimes it was a really good experience.
I worked with amazing people and had a little taste of IT limitation. Didn't had full admin access so I was limited on a lot of things I had to do but that taught me to say no to my supervisors when some things were not possible.
I'm very proud of the final result so do my superiors and colleagues. I'm really impressed by what I was capable of doing and that gives more self confidence. I know I made the right choice and I know I'll continue enjoy computer science as much as I do today.2 -
Is it legal to destroy other company's site or app. because they didn't pay your money in the past?
and also app they created is not secure.
The company is in another country.
.
.
.
If "No"
I'll still do that. I don't care.4 -
One good thing about working at a shitty place is you end up knowing what not to do by just pure pain.
I once consulted for a company who had the latest tech - kubernetes, bit bucket, you name it. But it didn't matter. The code was shit. It's not about the tech, it's always about the people that use the tech.5 -
Postman Rant
wow just wow ! just got turned my home internet off by the cable company. And they are right to do !
I apparently didn't sent them their money. But why didn't I ?
Im the typo guy who likes a bill in any type and then pay it. Sorry for beein old fashioned there. Now this lack of human intelligence aka. my postman didn't brought me them. Instead I always receive others Bills and shit( ok sometimes he drops it right ). Does he think the people
in this house live in a fuckin hippie community or some
shit where we all are one system. WTF ????
But my revenge will come you giant shitpile, except from reporting you to your office.
You FUCKED with my internet connection. That's personal2 -
I remember when I was fresh out of college and I had a shitty client that wouldn't shut up on how my design didn't look exactly like the 50 page PDF they sent over. So what did I do? I took each page of the PDF, made it a JPEG, and made each page in the site an image. THERES YOUR PIXEL PERFECT DESIGN!2

What is it about robot collected data that makes researchers so anal? Like, dude, it's not even personal data. It's literally robot's joint motor recordings. It's not nuclear data, so why the fuck do you protect it like your life and your country depend on it?
I hope you get fisted by that data every night and how it will end up in oblivion sooner because you didn't publish it. You asshole.8 -
Just finished my first project where I built a page with Angular, hosted it with Node/Express (locally), and pulled info from an API to display c: Feels good that I could even do it, even if it took hours of googling and tutorial to kick me in the right direction.
The whiskey didn't hurt either.1 -
This is about both worst boss and most annoying co-worker.
Well, this boss didn't care how much code we wrote, or how good it was (well, at least he didn't care that much); only how much commits we do. And this coworker literally did a script to do a commit every 10 minutes. 24/7. Everyone else was completely mad about it and about a week later we achieved that he was kicked from the job. Since then I still get trauma if someone commits something unimportant.9 -
A word of advice:
If you integrate email verification very tightly in the registration flow, it will be a world of pain to implement changing the email address.
It's alright, I didn't want to do anything this afternoon anyway.4 -
The feeling when your brothers think you are a magician cuz you play music by pressing lemons with arduino.
Then they tried and it didn't work ubless I was holding them.
Magic!
When life gives you lemons, don't do a lemonade. Do an arduino program and play!1 -
*Filling out unit test plan for tester which is an Excel Document*
*Excel keeps trying to correct capitalization on a word that I want capitalized over and over*
LISTEN YOU PIECE OF SHIT! If I didn't want to capitalize that word I wouldn't have capitalized it! Just do what I tell you to do! YOU ARE A PIECE OF SOFTWARE! YOU DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!4 -
I kept asking my manager for a salary rise for about the last 2 months and he didn't do anything about it so I searched for a new job and I found it! I noticed my manager that I am going to leave, he promised that starting from next month he will increase my salary... Aaaand he didn't...
So I decided to increase my own salary by reducing the working hours lol.4 -
Man, I love it when clients aren't specific enough and then get angry because you didn't do EXACTLY as they pictured it. :)
-
I was hired with the promise of being able to grow by doing as a software developer. After one year of reminding them almost once a week that I wasn't being able to do any development, but put in a position where I was somehow a Product Owner, today we had a meeting where I was suggested as a PO for real for next year. Funnily enough, our manager laughed and said that he knew I didn't want that. But still... no other name came up.
Sometimes, even if you are capable of doing something and doing it right, if that's not what you want to do, you should do it wrong. Otherwise, if there is the need for someone to do that thing you hate but can do, you will end up being the one that does it.
PO my balls...1 -
We had this team project to do in my second year at university. In C btw. My team consisted from 3 members. We had about a month or so to finish it. So of course we started 2 weeks before the submission. Well... I started. Those two didn't give damm about it at first but after I pushed them to do something one of them tried to code this simple function. It was supposed to check if the opptions from command line could be combined. His fuction had around !!200!! lines of code 😲 but he swear it was working. I was skeptic so i tested it. waaaaaait for it... it didn't work... the very first combination I tried that should not be accepted passed his awesome test 😱 I gave him another two chances. Result was the same.
I was furious. I had my part to do with little time to test someone else's code... So I desided to code the whole project on my own. Then I told my "coworkers" that they either pay me for it or they will be without any point for this project. I earned 80 € that day 😀😎
Btw my test function for those opptions had less than 10 lines 😁 -
So we have this team that deploys some code. We had a change in that code that "we" forgot about. Turns out, a dev on our team decided it would be cool to rename an endpoint. Why? Great question. Because. So this code gets deployed, but the call to that endpoint didn't get deployed. System 2 tries to call the endpoint, 404. We roll back, we're searching, after like an hour, we find it. We go to TFS to see who did it. The dev grabs my keyboard and starts checking diffs, somehow managing to skip their commit (from 5 months earlier). I take back my keyboard and *surprise* it was the commit that was skipped. WTF? Why did you rename that endpoint? What do you mean you didn't do it? It has your name right there!3

Dev Confession:
I wrote a bunch of code today that created more problems than it solved. I did not commit it. I used git stash to hide it. It took me hours to write. I didn't do a test on a small section of code beforehand. Literally hours of wasted man hours.
At least I didn't commit this garbage into the repo. The approach was fine, but the architecture made it a non-solution. Now I need to redesign this code or leave as is. It is production code I cannot just "change" on a whim.
I have officially dubbed this week as confession week. This should be a world wide thing. People should fess up to their terrible deeds. Lets start a trend and confess to our misdeeds in code and life. Make the world a better place!
What do you say?6 -
I had a week off. During that time nothing new was pushed to remote by my boss.
On the last day, before I started working again, literally Sunday night, a pile of garbage non-urgent changes were pushed directly to remote.
I guess it wasn't possible to wait another day for a review. I didn't really care much at that point, but it was just another confirmation, that quitting is the right thing to do.1 -
So this is about one assignment I had in my first programming class in university, I had a group which had 3 members, one saw the assignment and just quit, the other was always saying, "I Know what we have to do to complete this exercise" and I was like "great, then do it"...
Seconds later he just didn't do anything like "WT* man"2 -
Every meeting that contains one or more of the following points:
- "I don't think it belongs in the meeting, but"
- "Didn't get the meeting notes"
- "When's the food coming?"
- "I know we've said no technical discussion, but..."
- "Why is he so strict, this is no fun meeting at all :("
- "I think it's unfair to include risk assessment, you blame US before XY is finished"
- "The admins / the Team XY / ZX didn't talk with us, so we don't talk with him / her / them..."
- "Why are we here?"
- "Why is it so bad when production is down?"
- "I didn't know we do security / audit checks... Why hasn't anyone told us?"
- "Not happening. I'm against it"
- "I don't want to work with XY - he doesn't do it like I want it"
...
I could add thousand more things here.
I had countless meetings where I really thought that I was an alien who got broadcasted in a comedy reality TV soap...9 -
Who else is fed up of memes on Facebook like 'She was upset because I didn't talk to her. She didn't know that it was because I missed a semicolon in my code'
Really?? WTF compiler do you use dude? Because of such shitty memes, couple of my non-dev friends asked me how frequently I miss the semicolon in my code?! I said never because:
1. I am not a dumb coder to compile my programs with any syntax errors.
2. Even if I do, I fix it in a minute.
:| WTF really! These dumbheads don't make memes on bugs.3 -
my 3 year old youngest child just yelled 'hello world' but didn't told me if he echoed or printed it.

When I began my career, I always thought everyone in the IT-sector loved their Jobs (except a few people who didn't fit in of course) - 10 years later I've met a lot of people who hated their jobs but didn't just quit it (no kids, no wife, no responsibilities at all) - what do you guys think about this?
Personally, I'm looking for a job where I can put my heart into and which has got a meaning for me (haven't found it yet and I don't expect to do in a short time) because everything else makes no sense to me. -
Lord help me, I think I might be getting into keyboard modding.
All I really wanted to do was repair the keyboard I've used for the last 10 years. I didn't realize there was a whole hobby surrounding it.6 -

Hey guys,
I just released my first decent npm package: https://github.com/zzyyxxww/abides
It took more work than I expected and releasing it means a lot to me since I had a non existent portfolio before this.
I wrote it because I didn't like the de facto validators and I just wanted to do things my own way.
i know creating js packages is usually ridiculed, but at least I created this with a conscience and good code coverage.
thanks for reading.4 -

You see that ?
It didn't change. At all.
Let's call it an emergency but let's not do it, yeah.1 -
Any project that starts like this: "It's easy, it will only take us a couple of hours..." followed by "You code and I do the rest, that I didn't use this tool before".
-
It just took me 5 freakin hours to get the god damn upgrade done ... just to see that I've to do it again because I didn't use the latest back up ........... fml
-
Hello. I suppose I didn't really see anyone ask @dfox or @trogus how it's going without mentioning devRant itself. So, I'm going to do it... How is it going?10
-
Didn't go to work today because of commuting issues.
It's fucking night and I'm receiving notification of boss sending me photo on messenger. back to back.
I haven't opened the app yet and I'm legit scared if it has anything to do with me not coming to work.
Or even worse nudez.
:/ -
Being drunk I keep thinking I can't get back the years I didn't spend programming when I was 16-20. What do now? Want to do Web but all I know is a micro part of everything. I can make a demo in old Unity. I have shitty basic skills in Java, Python, Pascal, JS + React. Also basic UX, Adobe design programs like AI, PS and ID. Nothing proper, and home projects just don't seem to cut it. Irl bards can't get no work4
-
I'm currently missing a university class because of a wincrap update I didn't consent to. It didn't even ask if it can reboot, it just randomly did it while I was working.
Do I have some sort of legal grounds to sue?12 -
For me it was something within me. I often felt super demotivated and as a result unproductive when i had to do things i didn't like or that i thought were very bad ideas and plans .
Over time i got used to it and while I'm still better when I'm personally convinced that I'm doing something of value, i can now better handle shitjobs. -
Programmer friend: Dood, do this and this and show it to me, I'll say if it's good.
Me (noob): Okay, sure.
*next week*
F: So why did you stop coding?
M: Why do you think so?
F: You didn't show me your project in a week.
M: I was lazy?
F: LAZY?!?!2 -
Why the FUCK SCALEWAY DOESN'T DELETE MY FUCKING ACCOUNT!
Arrgh. I just want it to be deleted. I clicked delete almost 3 months now. I used their service for 2 months, charged for 4.
Ok, there is the story.
> Be me
> Be broke
> Buy their 3 Euro package
> Use it for 1 month, you know, install npm, vpn and stuff
> Be broke
> You have 0 euros in your account
> Cannot log in to server couse you didn't paid their bill
> Sure, they have right to do that
> Forget about it
> Earn money
> 3 months later, remember it
> Ok, I want to delete it, couse i don't use it anymore
> Remember you used more than 1 month, so pay your debt
> There is 3 issued bills
> Try to delete account
> Wait 1 month
> They didn't deleted your account
> Fuck it, there is the money you want
> Pay all the bills, hope it ends
> Wait 1 week
> Nope
> Open a ticket
> Says it will be deleted in few weeks.
> Wait 1 month
> DIDN'T FUCKING DELETED
WHY CAN'T THEY DELETE THAT SHIT FOR FUCKS SAKE. WHAT CAN I DO FOR MAKE THEM DELETE MY FUCKING ACCOUNT?

i guess im learning COBOL now..
didn't even know, this language still exists, and is alive until the Lead of the Department came around and asked me if i know that language, because they have a potential customer Project.
Others said, i shouldn't do it, but i'm also curious.
At the very least i will check it out 🦕5 -
Built a pFSense box for home with said proxy. Even though my internet connection is slow it seems fast now thanks to squids MITM https proxy and http proxy. Plus a little QoS helps. And it has so many more features than a regular router.... WTF didn't I do this sooner?4
-
Client: How many days do you need for this project
Me: 6 months
Client: That's too much. I researched and found that it shouldn't consume more than 3 months
Me: I'm sure you didn't researched on gradle building process (-_-) -
(This is the third time I'm talking about the same question I posted on stack overflow this week, but things keep happening that pisses me off)
Me: *answers my own question, clearly says I tried deleting the php path environment variable and that it didn't work, so that's why I added it back and now it's working perfectly*
Guy: *downvotes my answer* "you need to delete the php path environment variable, here's how"
M: "I did and it didn't work, that's why I added it back and now it's working"
G: "well, you need to delete the php path environment variable"
YOU MOTHERF-
G: "You need to check for all the references"
WERE? You literally only talked about environment variables, I told you I checked those multiple times. Obviously I don't know what I'm doing, if I did I wouldn't be asking such a stupid question like this one, so maybe a little guidance? I mean, isn't that what stack overflow is for? To guide people who don't know how to do something? Don't just say "your wrong" when I said MULTIPLE TIMES I did what you said and it DIDN'T WORK.
Seriously, asking a question there was the worst thing I did 😑
Anyway, he didn't answer back and everything is still working fine, with the php path.1 -

Manager: Hi
Manager: Do you know anything about this? <screenshot.jpg>
Me: Hi
Manager: Oh, I didn't mean to disturb you this late
Me: *what....? Then what DID you mean by writing to me at my bedtime....?*
(Though it's good he pinged me - it was a valid and time-sensitive concern. But saying "I didn't mean to" - that's just not true. Call a spade a spade and spit out what you need)10 -
So simple but so hard.
Having a bad cold I'v been home for a few days. Finally I could bend down without my head exploding so I could replace a harddrive in my ceph system.
I took everything off line, installed the new drive and did all the right things,
but afterwards it didnt come up.
It didn't make sense so I googled for hours while my fever were getting stronger without finding the answer.
So I gave up and reverted my changes and plugged in the old harddrive...
It still didn't work... a bit of panic. I mean... its all my files!
After a lot of sweating (no caused by fever) I realised I moved two ceph-mon processes a few weeks ago but I never rebooted the system afterwards, to fix it all I had to do:
systemctl enable ceph-mon
on two machines.
Summary: make sure things work after reboot and don't do challaging stuff while your brain is all scrambled. -
Them: "We need you to do this thing this way because it isn't possible to do the right way."
Me: ... *codes script that works the right way*
Them: "But it was actually this other thing we didn't say anything about that isn't possible."
Me: ... *codes script with new condition, still works*
Now repeat daily for 2 weeks and we may get to where I don't just silently provide a working script.
Maybe I should have just done it the wrong way to begin with? -
I used some kind of application on a compact disc (don't remember what it was) and it asked to reboot in order to do some stuff before Windows loads. Apparently in order to do so it overwrote MBR along with my TrueCrypt loader. Didn't make rescue disc, so lost about 300GB of stuff.

Side project showoff
Why isn't it enough to develop a tool that even the end user likes? So many challenges to get it through to the right people.
I launched this project in January. Didn't have anything to do for the year before when I got back home from my internship. So made this lol.
Any feedback is welcome.

It would be nice if I didn't have to come in and code on your bullshit product for your bullshit company so I could actually do some code and be happy about it.
If I wasn't so dependent on a regular income I'd be out and doing my own thing already. Money doesn't motivate me to code, it just creates the necessity for me to code for someone elses shitty ideas...5 -
So I spent yesterday designing the UI to my app... there were a lot of buttons and options and stuff...
I spent a few hours today implementing the actual logic.... and redesigning the UI based on it.
All the options and buttons disappeared now though... as I apparently didn't really need them after thinking about what I actually wanted the app to do....3 -
!dev
Some on here are very open about having addictions or using external things 'to keep going', be better or whatever else reason. I do too myself. (please don't get butthurt)
What do you think about weed & dev instead of - or even with - alcohol & dev?
BTW, I just noticed this (2 hours ago! I didn't know there are limits, which seems like a good idea..). I deem it obligatory to share. It's also the reason I'm asking 😁10 -
Both team members quit on a hackathon 2 days before the deadline. I was more curious whether I can do it than desperate, but I spent those 2 days coding. Didn't succeed though.

!Rant
Didn't have something to do tonight, and I was kind of thinking to make a multicore brainfuckversion for a while, so tonight I implemented it. I call it multiFuck:
https://github.com/papierbouwer/...3 -
At one point in my career I tried to do a payment plan for the websites I built for some reason (I guess to make it more affordable for people???).
Out of the 3 people I onboarded 1 of them actually finished paying for everything.
The other 2 didn't make it half way through.
Their invoices are overdue collecting interest to this day. Websites are shutdown.3 -
Had an idea for a Webb app tonight that I could use to test some new things out. Didn't get round to the new things but 3 hours later I do have my IDE set up, quarter of a billion npm modules and a gulp flow so complicated it feels like the file system is a rubicks cube...

Me: "You should go with this other option for the software. It's cheaper and you can do more."
Client: "No. This more expensive and less-capable thing I chose is better. We'll make it work."
[several weeks pass]
Client: "This isn't working. Why didn't it work?"
Me: "You have to upgrade to a more expensive plan, or switch to the other solution I told you about."
Client: "No. We'll make it work."
Me: *facepalm*3 -
What do you do when you are to work on something you have never worked on before, and you are stuck, and you are too noob to understand the solutions provided on SO (if any); except pulling your hair and crying? Because that I have already done and you bet it didn't help.1
-
I'm setting up an project at work. Takes me until now 2 days and there are dozens of undocumented things I couldn't know.
It's an total brainfuck of product. Most of it could be automated and be less error prone.
How can people do that? Don't they hate to do it too? I cannot understand why they didn't change anything there for years.1 -
It's 1:22 am, and what am I doing? Rewriting my Smite Team Generator as a standalone Java library. I have plans on completely revamping how the Android front-end for it works as well. I really wish I didn't have the desire to do this right now so I could go to sleep.2
-
What should I do with a guy, who rejected help, promised to do the work and just didn't even try to do it?5
-
I wonder...
Does anyone really indent with spaces by themselves? I would not if my IDE didn't do it for me.5 -
For the last time, ES5 DOESN'T support optional function parameters. gulp --production fails when running on testing when you do that.
*fixes gulp tasks to do gulp --production by default*
Next day : hey, why does gulp keep failing.
IT IS BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T LISTEN TO ME THE LAST 100 TIMES WHEN I SAID OPTIONAL PARAMETERS DOESN'T WORK WHEN MINIFYING
Let's see how you do it now.3 -
I love coding so much that I end up re-inventing the wheel more often than not. Like, I'll see an interesting problem and I'll prefer coding it myself than just google it. That's definitely a form of masochism. 🥺
Wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have a 100 other things to do...3 -
I don't get publicity hungry personalities on Medium. Their usual headlines :
"Why we left `${ insert framework}`. There's nothing wrong with it though."
Either have the balls to say you didn't do your homework when you started, or hold your peace.
Don't screw the hardworking folks whose code you depended on before bailing out. -
Boss: How much longer do you think you need to finish feature X?
Me: At least 2 weeks.
...
Me the day after: Well, it seems that I didn't need so much time after all. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -
I didn't know what I should do with my life..... Then I started learning how to waste it in programming.
-
An interviewer recently asked me "how many 'valid' combinations can you do with N parenthesis, either closing or opening?"
It sounds easy enough, yet I didn't manage to find the solution, apparently I was close enough using dynamic programming. Can you solve it ? :)14 -
Today after a second interview I was asked to complete a code challenge. They didn't say when they would want it completed by, only just as soon as I was able I guess. Anyways, they said ideally they'd like it to only take me 4-5 hours to complete. What should I use to track time? I was thinking just giving them some WakaTime data or maybe screen record the challenge while I do it. What would you do?8
-
Advice needed!!
I had a telephonic conversation a few days ago with a startup and they said they would assign me a task the next day. At the end next day I emailed them asking about the task as they didn't assign me yet. They replied saying they would assign it the next day.
That day was yesterday and I still didn't get a task.*What do I do?* I don't want to look desperate but I'm in short of time and won't be able to manage if it gets more delayed.3 -
Customer: It doesn't do what we wanted it to do, we have this issue, this particular usecase doean't work because you didn't use the patch we sent you. Please use it!
Me: I used most of it, I just fixed few broken parts and dropped part handling the hardware you realized you don't have and I just retested this particular usecase and it works! -
If you do not push something (language, education, people, cars, design, medicine ...etc etc) how the hell do you expect to mature, surpass expectations and become better. Java didn't start off as good or as bad as it is today. It was through testing, abuse, use and pushing it harder do more and more amazing things that it wasn't built for. PHP has changed alot since I started using and it's through people efforts that it gets better. Before the javascript wave came it was a nuisance to use and sucked as most browsers had it switched off by default but it's become more secure, fluent and able to do more amazing things and people are loving it right now.
I really wish people would stop with half arsed and uneducated comments.1 -
It was making me anxious that I was the only one doing a PhD among my close friends. I actually was feeling like I'm not good enough for it, because those around me didn't feel like they're good enough for it. (ridiculous, I know. But it is what it is)
And then, one of my bestfriends went for her PhD. Her situation is complicated, so she actually didn't have much of a choice. But now I am motivated and feel like I might actually be able to do it. 🙂 Mainly because now I can at least ask someone close when I have stupid questions. 😁
It is starting to feel like less of an strange idea, and more like proper work. 😁1 -
Once upon a time I was thinking if I should do IT or another career. I started to wonder "Boy, I think I should learn how to program...". Then I watched Shia LaBeouf's JUST DO IT. Well, I didn't have much choice then besides doing IT, did I?

My dad didn't actually know what it was I did. He wanted to get me into hardware and network security type things. Basically the kind of things network engineers or systems admins do. I am still not sure he knows what I actually do.3

I genuinely have respect for people and their professions.
But . . . why the fuck are IT Support generally hard to deal with.
I don't fucking have access to a Service and I damn need access. Support immediately without checking says: no you do have access go to xyz find the service click on it bla bla bla.
Bitch, you think I didn't try all that and just felt like having a conversation with you?
wtf5 -
I'm curious, why do you guys seem to always put up with "I changed my mind, I need it by Friday" kind of requests? "I've pulled an all-nighter, because customer wanted it before the holidays" - didn't you agree to do it after the holidays? Did the customer come by with a bag of money for you to put away everything else for them? Even if you do get paid extra, do you really get that much more to make your suffering worth it?6

My rant yesterday or whenever it was.
Dumbass tier 2 support staff told me i didn't know what i was doing and i had to do it his way while my way is pretty much the standard -
Stop shitting on my codes sir :(
I know I didn't give you strict guidelines but pleeeeeease do not code it this poorly. These are obvious mistakes.... -
When I was discussing this position with their HR, she mentioned they are filing time sheets, but she didn't mention they do it by typing something like "10:10-12:34" in a text area

Start coding a project for version 7.x, everything works in tests. Deploy it on the server and it doesn't work. Checks version and turns out it is 6.x, ask my manager why didn't he tell me before, he goes like so what, do it for all versions.
I go wtf -
What to do when someone creates anger in me?
How do you guys deal?
I'm in college. Will it be useful in life later if I learn to swallow my anger? or Do I need to develop some mindset so I can't be affected by whatever anybody says to me or insults me.
One of my teachers scolded me in the examination hall because he didn't like my clothes. There were no rules regarding uniforms. I was not wearing revealing or torn clothes, just normal clothes.
I hate it when such things happen. It disturbs me. Even when the whole event is over, the whole thing plays in my mind again and again, sometimes for days.4 -
My favorite thing, when your boss makes up a feature in their head and is angry that you didn't magically read their mind and implement it. I'm like a computer, I do exactly what you tell me, nothing more, nothing less, dummy.
-
Why do I feel like shit so much? When will it stop? I was hoping vacation would make me feel better, but it didn't, and now it's almost over and I will have to go back soon.
I feel like I'm trying to grasp empty air.

This screenshot is from when i first installed Ubuntu, i think 2 years ago.
I though well I'm not gonna be using it much, why bother giving it more than 30 gigs?
WRONG
I instantly fell in love and this became my daily driver. Within 2 weeks this happened. So I did what any sane person would do. Deleted windows partition to make space for this lil fella. (I didn't have much hdd space)
I am a proud man4 -
wrote myself a toml parser, it works alright but the official specification's in ABNF and boy, oh boy, half the work was figuring that shit out. But, hey, at least I didn't need to actually KNOW enough toml to do it

implementing ticket from epic somebody else did breakdown on
someone from other team mentions that we should be getting approval from their team and preferably avoid doing stuff in this legacy repo
im just a code monkey, i didn't make the decision (or know the nuances around it), nor did i want to be in that old legacy repo
pain
i didnt know, i dont know what i dont know,
how do i do better next time...3 -
I thought putting up a !ctags -R in .vimrc would help me use ctags in all of my code and I wouldn't have to do it manually but sadly that was a bad decision like. But I didn't know tags that generate to a 220 GB4

I didn't do it but one of my coworkers when he was new left his desktop unlocked while stepping away from it for a while. Another coworker changed the keyboard layout to Dvorak and locked it. The guy had to had to use his phone to look up Dvorak to get his desktop unlocked.1

I hate systemd, i hate it. Which idiot wrote that piece of crap? And it isn't that easy to replace it when it is so embedded in the distro.
Its commands can't even output text normally, which should the absolute basic functionality of every program. And it does things automatically i didn't tell it to do, for example setting the system time to some random date instead of leaving it at 1970-01-01. -
I've been for 1 month in my first job as dev and I have a demo on Wednesday about some stuff either I didn't do myself and nor have any idea of how it works. De demo is 6 mins with the full project tribe... from ppl over the globe... wish me shit.6

How is it possible my netflix password got hacked when I never used it anywhere else and it's randomly generated? I saw some weird logins with random subtitles. Google password manager told me it's in some data breach, how do I find out from where? Haveibeenpwned didn't find anything. 😐7

No idea, it just makes me happy. I'm happy when I'm programming :)
Well I mean, most of the time. Every once in a while I just want to kill myself because Tim didn't do his work properly and now there's no fucking documentation for his stuff.
Ignoring those moments, I'm happy when programming :) -
!rant
Back when i was in college, I developed a RAT. Best 4 months of programming.
It was time to test it. so I got couple of friends who were very good at getting good grades but knows nothing about programming or how computer stuff works.
So I got into their PCs. GOD, from that day onwards I didn't have to do anything except to change the name on the assignments. -
I build an android app for a start-up. It took me 2 months to build that app. After I finished they didn't use the app as they started working on some different idea. They didn't even pay me for that app even after requesting many times..
Now after 1.5 years they have the audacity to come to me and ask me to work on a new Android app.
What should I do?5 -
A: our WordPress website that use heavily Facebook APIs is not working anymore because of the privacy changes
B (thinking): seems something easy, check the settings and do an invoice of the job for a portal that we didn't done and get a new customer
B: we can do it in blablabla for blablabla
Silence from the A side
1 month later...
A: I didn't found your bank account for the payment but we are ready to do that fix. And we have also a new feature request. -
Apparently, while SQLite will happily let you write recursive common table expressions, it won't let you write MUTUALLY recursive common table expressions. This doesn't seem to be documented although I suppose you could infer it from the section I didn't read on how they work internally. Such a shame that I can't do this good and useful thing which I have good applications for.2
-
Got an email regarding the recruitment process in an MNC. They had asked me to select location and stream for my job. Every stream they had sent was only testing and its types. I didn't go ahead with it because I didn't want to do only testing. I wanted to build applications as well. Told my parents and they flipped out on me telling me I'm going to suffer cuz of this and that something is better than nothing.1

Once one my teachers asked me to write the code for insertion sort and mail her as she didn't know how to do it. OK, whatever. And then she asked me to send it as pdf or word file. I gave up.

Didn't know how to do backend development. The organisation I was working for then needed a simple backend. Learnt some PHP and developed the entire backend in less than 8 hours
PS In hindsight, the code was grotesque, but at least it worked!1 -
Mann i will always be a newbie to the world of linux, but running cmd on it, its always scary. Like one purge command and it went on deleting so many packages i didn't knew even existed at the first place.
I feel like a blind man following the blogs hoping to god that no wrong shit happens. And the blogs are also like "do step1 then step2 then step3, you will see x , do y and it will work" , and surprisingly it works!.
Linux is a beautiful mystery.
And why the hell is almost every browser in linux broken?
- Netflix, hotstsr and Spotify won't run on any versions of opera or chromium because opera didn't got some widevine installed.
- chrome runs but no good free vpn(i prefer hola/1click) works
- firefox is weirdly slow.
And yet this is the world's most lovable platform for web dev5 -
The worst kind of people to work with are the ones that you tell a heads up, don't do this, it will cause problems, but happens anyway and in team meeting "I didn't know, no one told me" and it just makes you look worse to even argue it....
-
Didn't know it feels so great to take the 4:30pm shuttle back home. I played with my 4 year old, had tea with my wife, tinkered around my personal project, watched a YouTube video on microservices, and to top it all dined together. If only I could do this everyday.

I got a Samsung A71 from job. What changes would you do to make it less "Samsungy"? Like, I like my OnePlus, but the Samsung is arguably better, so it's be nice if I didn't disgust it.5

Question.js
How do I create a simple store for state management. I don't want to use redux. I achieved most of things I wanted I'm kinda stuck at something. Here say the store
obj = { attr1 : { some : { nested : ["json"] } } }
I used setter in es6 to avoid writing to attr1 after attr1 is set.
My dilemma here is how do I freeze the nested object being changed? I tried various ways arround Object.freeze. it didn't work. I'm looking for some way I can do it? Or someone can help me understand redux or vuex without going through all of their code. -
Quick question: I've been using Windows almost all my life, I tried Ubuntu but I didn't like it. What linux OS do you guys recommend?20

Project got in after months of the people requesting knowing the project needed to ve in a web form.
They didn't let my department know till right fucking now with only two weeks for launch time.
Yeh its a simple formz yeh I can do it, yeh you do own me a bottle or Knov Creek and a steak after this you son of a bitch, i got other shit to do1 -
What you gies do when you learn new technology and after that, you switch to some other new technology and you start to forgot to old one.
example: some times ago I start to learn nodejs and after code couple of months in it, I switch to golang but now if I look back it seems to foreign to me and I didn't create logic properly in it, unless I didn't create 1 or 2 large projects in it.2 -
Why was my code push today completely flawless?
Because I didn't do it on Friday at 5 pm when it was actually complete. -
Actually, it was probably my whole first two weeks in my first dev job. I got hired while still attending community college for my associates, and was woefully under-qualified (I didn't embellish, they hired me anyway), and my boss went on a three week vacation three days after I started. I had no idea what to do, didn't get much help from others on the team either. First couple of weeks were rough.

So my (windows 10) laptop decided to suddenly forget about its Bluetooth capability. And about its Bluetooth hardware.
Now, I did not restart my system, I just left it idle for a while. Heck, I played rainbow six before leaving it idle (with a Bluetooth mouse, of course)
Tried checking for the settings (didn't find any settings related to Bluetooth service), didn't find it in device manager, useful the troubleshooter (bastard says the problem is I have no Bluetooth hardware installed), tried restarting the system, checked in bios menu (couldn't see hardware info printed in bios system info), tried updating/reinstalling the driver.
The hell am I supposed to do?10 -
So I got a mice, and arm for it and etc.
Figured out how to do some noise cancelling.
All good for some voice overs!
ON the downside I didn't realize how much smacking and noise I make just opening my mouth ... I'm like some sort of uncouth barbarian via audio.... not just video.3 -
i got a dev!rant nostress ball, because i didn't have any serious rants and used the app for fun purposes.
edit: do you think maybe it can also help in debugging, although it's nothing close to being a duck. -
I know devrant is not the place to ask this but I didn't know what else to do....I very often have doubts about weather I like programming or not even when I started learning programming 2 years ago...Does this imply that I don't really like it? Because I believe that if you really like something than you don't have doubts about it but am not sure if I am correct or not.8

Calls phone company to ask what's wrong with the internet connection.
Customer Service: Please turn off your modem, wait 10 seconds then turn it on again.
Me: Do you honestly think I didn't do that a hundred times already? -

Do any of you find that you can type the solution faster than GitHub Copilot recommends?
That's how you know you're senior 😏
Also, on a serious note, does it only support JavaScript / TypeScript? Didn't really take time to investigate.
I thought there was also a feature you could tell it what to code and it would try to write a solution. Haven't really seen how to do that yet.7 -
Asked my real estate agency to withdraw the rent from my bank account on monday. Today is friday, these fuckers didn't do it and now I don't have enough money left (short by 50€) to pay them.
On the bright side, I finish the month with 600€.
Damn it should be painful to be this fucked in the head.6 -
How do I go about taking up a job that I might only want to do temporarily but the company X may have a long(er) term expectation? I can't wrap my head around it.
Also the other company Y in which I am much more interested, but still didn't reply to my email after 2 days. So I am stalling with X before taking it up...
I hate this timing tactics. I feel like I am playing a strategy game.3 -
Rewrote 1000 lines of code(literally) because someone else didn't do their job properly, and now they've been given another task.
Frankly though, I don't think they're capable of doing it at all. -
Why do some hosting services with MySQL not allow triggers and stored procedures / functions?
Had never tried to use them and now I've done it and deployed a site, I discover I can't create triggers, and that some hosting provider don't allow users to do them... this is a rant but more of a question, as I didn't know and maybe there's lore to it you do know...1 -
It was compulsory to study logo at the school, class 4. Was around 10 at that time. Love what I could make the turtle do with commands. FF 2 years, learnt HTML in school. Loved how some tags made a webpage. Didn't code for next 7 years(idiotic decision?). Started with Java and Android development and fell in love again. Didn't let it go this time 😀

So here I am debugging a factory in an algorithm I didn't write in a library I didn't write all so I can jam an exception throw into the code to handle input validation.
I am being forced to use exception handling. To handle input validation.
What is my life? It wasn't supposed to be this way. I was supposed to work with smart people who do smart things. Why? -
I am interested in Machine learning and don't know how to proceed. there are tons of courses on udemy, Coursera, udacity etc..
I am doing Coursera machine learning by Andrew Ng and didn't know what to do next. Suggestions will be helpful.
Btw I am doing Machine learning to implement it in Android. -
hardships of being campus IT: took two full days to set up a PCMCIA wifi card because I had to circumvent the software required and it actually just wouldn't install the Intel software. also printer decided it didn't want to work anymore, ate a print job by retracting the paper it printed (and that's not even a thing it's supposed to be able to do) then ceasing to function.
thankfully I was the only one able to revive it, but the process was i n f u r i a t i n g2 -
After some joyful years with typescript i learned that my major code base didn't use strict mode. I changed and now i feel i don't know typescript at all. Some things get irritatingly complicated now although it's even more resilient now for sure. I am not sure how to feel about it. So to the typescript out there: Do you use strict? A custom set of rules?6

I knew devRant was some good thing, but didn't knew that it was some god level shit.
So, there is no change password option. I mean why do you want to change your password if you remember it? Just Forget it.
They got a good point.1 -
I really do not understand why people do not use the defaults, I see a PHP code and I see all the PSR's violated, SOLID violated, and as it is something of years, unfortunately we did not get more rapporteur in a timely manner. I didn't go to college, but I must say, what the hell do you guys do in college?
Then many (the good obviously) programmers do not understand why they take so much the fun of PHP, if they see the codes that I see lately...2 -
I started programming with Threads (in C#) I though it can't be this difficult after i get it how to create a delegate right (2 hrs) and interact with my form without a crash (after another hr, but it didn't do this what it supposed to do) there popped up errors kind of randomly out of nothing and I have no idea how to avoid or catch them😩4
-
I feel like I didn't do this right and I'm a tad confused as to what they mean when they say that the function should look like this when you call it:
let line = openingLine(verb: "row", noun: "boat")
Is my solution correct?10 -
Would you delete whatsapp after new agreement?
I didn't yet deleted it, because I don't do big shit in it.8 -
Should I install Elememtary OS (Loki) ?
Anyone that uses eOS, why do you use it? Any problems with it? Gimme advice.
I tried it on Virtualbox but apparently it doesn't like that very much. Files didn't have a search function, bit hard to customise.
I'm willing to try, everyone seems to be using it, I assume it shouldn't be that bad.9 -

Why can't you just do what I say... I don't need ur opinion on points that I specifically stated should be done a certain way....
I don't want to spend 30mins arguing with you... I already got enough work as it is and ur supposed to be helping me...
I don't have time to explain everything to you... Just what I need you to do....
There's a reason I got promoted and you didn't...4 -
I just realized that I have actually mastered the ways of the rubber duck debugger with the help of ... stackoverflow.
I just couldn't get my head around a problem thought about it for hours.
Googled for similar solutions, but didn't find anything.
In the end, I decided I'd do something I usually wouldn't and post a question on stackoverflow.
While carefully writing out and explaining my problem, it just made click.
I had it...
It works now...2 -
So my boss moved me to build some software to IoT devices we have because he didn't have the time to do it. But I haven't used C since college (I mostly use Java), but I'm trying to handle it. But right now we are developing a feature that is taking longer than expected and he comes over and tells me how easy it is to do it. Really? You were trying to do it that way for a shit ton of time and it didn't work, do you really expect it to work because it's me? Fucking hell!
-
I initially thought I wanted to go to college for video editing, then I changed my mind and wanted to go into graphic design. Those didn't work out and I began contemplating what I could do with my life. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks. I could make a career out of the hobby I had since the age of 13. Never even considered it before that moment.

Today I made a class to do one simple thing. Duplicate a database entry along with a few of its relationships. At first it didn't make sense to create one class for that but I decided to follow my SOLID gut. It ended up being almost 100 lines long with just one entry function working as a route controller. Thank God for SOLID principles...
-
I wouldn't say it is the worst. But it certainly had a lot of problems.
Alice
The 3D platform with drag and drop code. You could do a lot, but God help you if you didn't have a fast computer.
The worst is that it didn't have an auto save feature back when I worked on it. (No idea if they ever patched that)
You were SOL if you worked for an hour and forgot to save anything.4 -
Some day ago I ranted that I needed to program Angular2 but my keyboard didn't have the ` symbol.
Now I decided to remap the useless £ to `. I wasted like 2 hours but it seems that doesn't exist any way to do it. I downloaded like 10 application but nothing, I can't remap a second-function key.
Oh my god, who invented the italian keyboard needs to burn in the hell10 -
How do you handle a customer asking too much revisions
I have a client asked for a web app, i made it and everytime he asks for a change, edit, add new functionality, then he thinks back, no remove that and re-add that, change color, no i don't like it, change to this, hmm move this here back and forth i just wish i didn't deal with him in the first place...
so frustrating3 -
So, I have a friend and he asked me to do a discord bot for him. (The language was kinda up to me and I chose Python). Nothing complicated (theoretically). I coded it, tested it and sent it to him. But after installing it, he got a different issue EVERY single day. And he didn't change anything! The most infuriating part is, that I couldn't even reproduce the issues he had. WHY? Why can't it just work? Why can't a simple project not just be simple?3
-
Not really a fight, but a disagreement that lead to some big changes in my mind.
When entering my school, I still had a part of me wanting to do game development.
I'm gonna make it short : We wanted to do a game in Java at school in first year, but one wanted to do it in C because didn't feel good with Java.
And I always sum that experience up by saying "Never again." The atmosphere in the team was very friendly, but that's the only good part of it. I hated doing that project, and it removed that small will of doing game dev (as a paid main job).
Maybe it would have changed if it was later during my studies, since I was still learning how to code during that project.
But I guess it showed that I was maybe not that motivated to do games.2 -
An assistant manager asked to SOMEUNREALISTICEXPECTATION, and said it had to be done within SOMESTUPIDLYCLOSEDAY.
I said, of course, I would not do it.
He answered "no problem, we can go with SOMEPARTOFTHEUNREALISTICEXPECTATION before SOMEEVENCLOSERDAY (ie: tomorrow).
I have already said a "no" before, didn't feel like saying no again.
After all, I said, what could possibly go wrong?
The time I left office, Friday night, it everybody's guess.3 -
Rant !
I seriously do have a love-hate relationship with programming.
About a couple of hours ago ,I was so happy learning new things and already planned I can make something so awsum with this stuff and then when I sat down to code it didn't work .Damn it , going through just about 10 lines of code for a couple of hours . Googling it ,no luck .3 -
!rant Hi, I have a question. I want to change my CPU, from a socket AM1 to AM3 to make my PC faster, it is the first time I upgrade it. I want to know if it is necessary to reinstall the OS. I have search in the Internet and it says you need to reinstall if it is windows because of the drivers. My OS is ArchLinux and I didn't need to install any driver when I first install it, do I really need to reinstall?4

Lost my password to my hostmaze login because LastPass didn't save it properly. Now I can't reset it because their mailing server is not working (found out after emails failed to send to their support email with an error on their end). Their chat is also non-responsive.... What do I do now...

Often times while working/debugging I get to a state where the app/whatever works but then I realize that it didn't, so some more changes and I get to a new state.
Question is, does there exist something which lets me switch between these states without messing up my git? I do have a solution in mind but want to know if it already exists.16 -
Even though we have sophisticated CD pipeline, decided to modify war on server (modifying 1 source file, compile it and patch it on server (Java based)). Just cause CD takes 4 hours and we "only have" 15 mins to do it. So manual patching with rush job. Now when I think about it, I cringe and thank the dev ducks that we didn't messed it up even worse!1

tl;dr How do I deal with translations?
Chinese users asked for translations for ages, one guy did it all, but then? I needed to update the app, I had added some new strings, the guy didn't replayed. Obviously, as I didn't wanted to pay, I've used Google Translate. Result? "Good app, but the translations are wrong.", nice!
What can I do? Do I remove the Chinese translation and tell them to fuck off?2 -
Exciting and challenging projects really helps with burnout. I didn't really believe that the solution is to work more it sounds stupid, but it reminded me why I love my craft, it was worth the sleepless nights(wouldn't do it in the long term). I hope you get the opportunity to work on something that you are passionate about and reignite that fire 🙂4

I learned to program in community college where they had us learn C# but I honestly didn't catch the programming bug until we had to do assembly language. I just found it fun to break what I needed to do into 's,mall steps and at the end I get to see the result of all that Work!

Completely noob question and before you say it, yes I have googled but I'm tired and I just get walls of text.
How do I merge a pull request?
A nice guy has submitted a pull request to my repository on GitHub, how can I merge it??
I tried what I thought was merging but it said that a file is conflicting. I tried deleting the file and it still didn't merge.4 -
1. What do you think about this kind of companies that "teach programming" and students pay when they get a job ? Given the amount of information available on the internet, I don't think they worth it.
2. Have you heard about this one? Someone asked me, but after googling I didn't like it. Their curriculum looks like a collage.

Now I didn't become a dev solei to avoid paperwork but the lack of paper was appealing...
I'm stuck in a support gig because it pays more than any of the dev jobs I got offered and I do is write is docs on Confluence.
Please no "Money isn't everything" comments. I agree but the dev offers I got, I couldn't live on -
Jordan Castillo: Happy birthday sire.
Eddie: Thank you Maestro.
Jordan Castillo: 😊 How do you feel now that your life's code just ran past an age++?
*10 minutes later.
Jordan Castillo: Oh what? I didn't see your reply.
Jordan Castillo: You maybe forgot to echo it out.
Eddie: Oh well Jordan, I feel like an iteration I guess.2
