Not a coding test, but:
Them: So you are interviewing for a programmer opening. Do you like programming?
Me: yes.
Them: do you make logos?
Me: ...I can...?
Them: good because you won't always be writing code here.
Me: I'm out.8 -
How to have success when you are chatting with live support:
- Pretend to be a girl
This is very effective, I can get lower price and good deal almost every time.25 -
I'm getting tired of these "500++ for a stressball rants".... You have my sympathies BUT FOR FUCKS SAKE, if you really want a stressball JUST BUY ONE.....
You know you're money goes to a good cause... unlike our taxes...
Here's a paradox I guess: why are you stressing over a stressball?34 -
You are good in programming and data structures.
But we won't select you because you couldn't solve the puzzle. 😑11 -
Customer :Can you build a system that rates our product by XYZ standard?
Us: Sure!
*time passes*
Us: Ta-da!
Customer: Okay, here are some good and some bad products!
*products get rated shit to supershit*
Customer: No, that's wrong. Some of these are as good as we can, they should be rated best!
Us: okay, we offset the results.
*products get rated good to barely okay*
Customer: Great! Can you sign that the system rates by XYZ Standard?
Us: No.
Customer : But we paid you to rate by XYZ standard!
Us: By XYZ standard your products are bad, you can either have your products rated by standard or pass the test.
Customer: Unacceptable!
Us: Improve production?
Customer : Not possible, the job is done when you rate the products good by XYZ standard.9 -
Boss: Who knows VB?
Me: I once wrote a calculator
Boss: Good enough! You will edit the companies biggest VB Application.
Lesson learned. When your Boss asks if you know a programming language you do not really know, you are like John Snow: Know nothing7 -
So i sent my bill to the client yesterday and:
C: the amount is too high i can’t pay this
M: but you validate the number of working days
C: but the amount is huge ... nevermind i’ll pay you because you are good guy
M: ...6 -
Me to wordpress "developer"
- No, you are not a developer, you just drag and drop shit in visual composer
That felt good3 -
I need to hide myself, my computer, programming skills and computer knowledge from people. Then only, I will be safe..
Friend: Heeey, you're good with computers right?
Me: No! 😑
Friend: Come-on bro. I know you are.
Me: What do you want?
Friend: I want you to check and book flights for me for country X.
Me: Are you ok? How does this have anything to do with someone being good with computers and stuff?
Friend: Haha, see? You're good with computers. *starts laughing. Anyway, since you're good, you can find the best prices. I know you know how to search sites and how to find things online.
Me: WTF?!?!!! All, you have to do is type in your search. If you don't like the results, you simply refine it.
Friend: See, all this tech stuff I'm not really good at it.
Me: But you're good at searching for other things online, right? Do the same for your flights.
*Picks my laptop and walks away.
How can a young man not be able to search for flights online but knows how to use several gadgets. Nonsense.9 -
Joker: If you are good at something don’t do it for free
Me: (thinking) How much shall I charge to introduce bugs into someone’s code? 🤣3 -
"Can you help me make an app? I've got this perfect idea, but I can't tell you what it is until you've said yes."
SIGH. I wish these people knew that perfect ideas are worthless, there are plenty of them. Perfect executions of good ideas are what has value.6 -
I get depressed during times like this.
Me: *does a keyboard shortcut*
Friend: Woaw, are you good on computers?
Me: yea.
Friend: CAN YOU HACK?
Me: yea...
Friend: WHATS MY PASSWORD?
Me: I don't know your password.
Friend: You can't hack then.9 -
Advice from my neighbour:
" Don't use laptop so much, you know eyes are really soft, virus can easily enter to your brain through your eyes. If you take my advice it's good for you."
-_-7 -
No, I wont help you solve your stupid problem. If you are not able to read the wiki or the man pages - Arch linux is not for you.
You have only proven that you are stupid enough to listen to other people who likes to brag how good the are, but actually do not know shit.15 -
If you want to improve, be with people that are already better than you.
That's what I do, and so far so good.8 -
Sorry John Doe, you're application for this job has been rejected. As we specified for this job you need to know about GitHub. In your CV you stated that you are an expert in git but our job requires the knowledge of hub as well. Good luck next time10
-
So you build a beautiful site; you spend good time on UX, refactoring, server optimisation, getting good page load speeds, SQL all optimised - life is good.
Commercial team comes in and slaps clickbait, generic advertising, tracking scrips over the lot.
Page loads go from a second to 30 seconds and even though you made sure all those crappy ad scripts are asynchronous pages still hang most times. PingdomTools lists your page scripts as going from 40 files to over 900... now users are ringing me up giving me grief about how slow this new company website is...5 -
He: are you are programmer?
Me:yes.
He:can you hack Instagram and Facebook.
Me:no.
He:then you are not a good programmer.
This happens each and every time.6 -
Annoyingly typical office conversation:
Person 1: "Good morning."
Person 2: "Good morning, how are you?"
Person 1: "Good. How are you?"
Person 2: "Good."
Person 1: "Good."
NO! Not good, fuckers. I hear this all day long, come up with something real or original. Talk about the massive shit you just took, or how hard you're taking the news about Diablo Immortal. It reminds me of that scene in Office Space with the repetitive call center lady, lol.17 -
Remove the egos, and then read other people codes, it doesn't matter their codes are good or bad, you can still learn from it.
-
Interviewer: So here are the technical tests. You have 20min.
Me: We agree I can use the internet?
Interviewer: No, sorry.
Me: Good, I'll make you pen&paper websites then. Seriously!?4 -
Stop bitching about having to write comments, they are important whether you like it or not. Trust me nobodys code is "that good" 😒4

FUKING RECRUITERS:
Good Day <NAME>, Hope this message finds you well.. One of my clients is currently looking for 6x C# developers and i strong believe you are the right candidate for this position. Are you open for new opportunities?
FYI, I have never used C#, it is not listed in any way on my LinkedIn profile, do these fuckers not fucking read.8 -
My computer science teacher is very sly: while you are working he stands right behind you for some time, so you start writing good code, functions for everything, perfect indentation... But you don't know if he is still behind you, and you're not brave enough to look back, so you write good code for the rest of the lesson.
What a good prof8 -
a friend just asked for good games that are ftp
i said why does the way you download a game matter. 🤦♂️7 -

2) "Do you like coding for work on weekends?"
Are you serious?4 -
You are a consultant and wrote some easy scripts by copying code snippets together?
Good for you!
It makes your job easier?
Good for you!
You didn't care too much about UI because you only needed the job to be done?
That's fine!
BUT DON'T YOU DARE SELL THIS SHIT TO A CUSTOMER AND CALL YOURSELF A SOFTWARE DEVELOPER!
YOU ARE NO DEVELOPER!
YOU DON'T KNOW NOTHING ABOUT HOW TO BUILD A RELIABLE SOFTWARE.
no one needs a solid database structure?
Object oriented programming is "just another hype"?
No one cares for the coding?
FUCK YOU, AND YOUR ATTITUDE!7 -
You ever see a rant with zero ++ and even though you are not that good person but just want OP to feel loved so you give em one of those ++? I do12

Notification: someone you know is on Instagram
Me: ohhh? Are they? Fucking good for them then ain't it. Least they're not on fucking heroin...7 -
Him: I am a software engineer.
Me: That is great, do you use specific technology?
Him: Multiple, but my basic is YouTube.
Me: Sorry, I didn't get it? You mean YouTube API?
Him: No need, I have a channel on YouTube... And podcast a lot about software engineering.
Me: So you don't write code anymore?
Him: I didn't, engineering is more than writing codes.
Me: Yes it is....13 -
Good luck to team devRant at the TNW NYC conference today. We are sure you will make our global devRant community proud as always. Thanks for all you do!

Dev at some point of the Interview.
Me: ...and how good do you consider yourself with vanilla JavaScript.
Him: erm... I think I'm very Good with Javascript but to be honest, never heard of that Vanilla framework. There are so many libs/frameworks that it's hard to keep up.
Me: ...7 -
Being a backed developer is like being a spy. You are only known by your failures. You will never get to know a good backed developer or a good spy.2
-
— I heard you like programming and are quite good at it.
— Don't know about the latter but I do like it.
— Cool. Can you help me set up this Excel spreadsheet?
Actual conversation I had about two months ago...3 -
When you receive tens of JAVA job offers, just because your online resume says you are good at "Javascript".1
-
Are you a mango in Siberia?
Mangos seeds don't grow in Siberia. But if they are moved to a warmer climate they grow to be the King of fruits.
Do not beat yourself up if you are not doing good at one organization in one role. Analyze what is the problem and if it requires a change of team/organization, roles..just do it!8 -
Are you a iOs developer/Android developer/graphic designer/web developer/3D artist aged 18 - 30? Are you fluent in English, both written and spoken? Well, that's nice , Good day 🤡1

Avoiding bad companies starts at the job interview. Remember that the job interview is not only for them to evaluate you, but also the other way around. Make sure to ask a lot of questions. What are they doing, how are they working, what help is there if you get stuck, are they doing code reviews, what will you be doing etc.
The job interview is the opportunity for you to get an inside view of the company. Don’t just accept any job because you are desperate. Luckily qualifies devs are much needed in companies.
Also, make sure to go to multiple job interviews so you can see the differences. I think it can be difficult to avoid in the beginning, but as you get more experience, you can sort of tell whether it’s a good or bad company at the job interview.
Though sometimes you are just unlucky. In that situation: leave. It is so good damn easy to get a job in this field.3 -

You have a question.
You google it; nothing comes up.
You read the documentation; no good.
You ask it on stackoverflow; no answer.
You are in... The Twilight Zone4 -
To all kids that are leaving Github only because the "big bad corp) bought it:
Why did you not leave earlier? Github was good being closed before23 -
Sorry devrant I have to fix my life before I can spend time on you again 😔.
Good luck to you all might be some time before I'm back 😢 but you are my people!
Good luck8 -
What is this, what the fuck is this shit?!!
Are you actually serious Google? Android Studio my ass...
The compat joke is a good one...22 -
To all the developers fighting for a good architecture, and the designers fighting for good UX. You guys are the real heroes fighting the eternal fight.
Here's to you! -
!rant, advice, !mine
Q: I'm [xx] years old [xyz] professional. Would that be a good idea if I try to change my career to software development right now?
A: Age is mostly doesn't matter. You can learn programming at any age. And, software is everywhere. Every background knowledge will be useful. Your prior knowledge will not be wasted.
But, should you change career?
- YES, if you deeply interested in programming.
- NO, if it's only because you feel there are better opportunities.
It's true that there may be better opportunities. But, without deep interest in the subject, you may struggle to become good software developer. Without being a good developer, your opportunities will be limited and you are likely to regret the decision.
Software development is easier for those who passionate but very difficult for those who doesn't....4 -
My uncle: „You are good with computers, right? My Word is broken, repair that.“
Yeah sure, let me just call my bros at Microsoft and repair your Word with them 🤨 -
I hate the dumbass people that send on slack: "good morning", "good afternoon" or "how are you?" and do not say anything until I reply. If you do this FUCK YOU!! Just ask the fucking question. Now I just ignore everybody until the question is made11
-
Why management people thinks that a career path for any senior developer is to be a "leader" and be good in business side. Its like saying "hey you are a good programmer, let me take away that work you love to do and do stupid human resource management instead"5
-
Random Person in Company Slack: "Hi! Good Morning. How are you?"
Me (in my head): "Just raise a ticket...." 😓 😓6 -
IT Head: Hey, can you check out why application X isn't working? I've already restarted it and it isn't working anymore.
Me: sure.
Me 20 mins later: hey, looks like it is all good, website is normal, server resources are normal, etc...
IT Head: no no, the windows sync app isn't working.
Me inside: are you fucking kidding me you piece of stupid shit? Quit IT for good and die.3 -
Life is like code,
Your loved ones are your IDE,
You can be good with code without an IDE,
but it makes things much more smoother when you have one :D
Life quote :) -
A recruiter asks: "Why are you looking to leave your company ?"
If you tell them you want to grow, they think you have a hidden political agenda.
If you tell them that your boss is unfair, they will think you have problems with authority.
If you tell them that you are not satisfied with the current salary, they will think you are greedy.
If you tell them that you do not get along with someone, they will think you are hard to work with.
If you say you want to be closer to home to spend time with your family, they will think you are lazy.
If you tell them that you are looking for bigger challenges, they will think you are not honest.
If you tell them that you want to acquire new skills, they will think you will quit them when you are done acquiring.
If you tell them they are the ones who initiated the contact with you, and got you interested, they will think you are a
smart-ass.
The truth is - all the reasons above are valid, and those are the real reasons why good people quit.
Which makes this question stupid - makes people uncomfortable..12 -
If you don't feel good enough with your programming skills, keep practicing but don't be sad, there are dogs all around the world that love you3
-
after coding for 4 hour you find a class that can do the same task in 5 min .You dought yourself if you are a good coder6
-
Writing a game from scratch is a good way to see how awful you are as a programmer, specially if you come from webdev.
Amazing how fast your code looks like shit when you're writing a game, even the simplest one.14 -
Tough days are standard are they not?
A good ritual is forcing yourself outside and get some fresh air, don’t have a single thought of what it is you were doing and just destress.
I also find punching something therapeutic aswell so there’s always that option 😅 -
@dfox you could try using progressive jpegs, so that images are not shown when they're fully loaded but, lower resolution is loaded first then pixels are added to it as time passes, really good for people with slow Internet.6
-
I'm beginning to think that it's not important to know how to code anymore, but how good you are at handling management.5
-
Introducing. Snapchat privacy invasion. You can see where your added friends are if they do not disable it (enable ghost mode).
Good job :)5 -
I remember the days when your only problem is creating an asterisk pyramid with for loops. Unlike now when you are thinking how idiotic a user can get.
Good old days1 -
Don't you feel sometimes like you may not be as good dev as you think you are? Like all you do is search for chunks of code in stackoverflow so you can assamble a semi functional project.
I'm having one of those days, and it just feels like shit.6 -
I regret learning so much.
Now I understand why professors are so sad.
Having good understanding of the universe and everything is just depressing.
If you want to be happy dont pursue science. Ever.31 -
Yesterday I met my cousins who are old enough to have kids. It was a good talk with them bringing back the old memories. One of my cousins has a barely 5 year old kid. I tried to talk to her and the conversation went like this:
Me: “hey there! Hi, how are you?”
She: “Good. What do you do?”
Me: “I am a computer science engineer. What do you wanna be when you grow up?”
She: “A scientist.”
Me: **thinking calmly, “Oh, what kind of scientist?”
She: “A Data Scientist.”
Me: **Two seconds of silence and decides to leave...4 -
Azure is a big pile of shit.
Fuck you Microsoft. The only thing they are good at is consisently making bad things.19 -
So true and why I've gone on and on over years saying technical interviews are just crap... Good solutions cannot be thought of in 30mins unless you recite what you remembered beforehand.
Are you looking for creators and thinkers or robots -
After 3 interviews with test:
"Ok very good, I see you are good with JavaScript, Php, MySQL and some frameworks, it's exactly what we need because we use only on the edge technologies and we do very cool products."
"Thanks, so what about the first app?"
"App? oh no eheh, now you must manage our 12 wordpress sites and edit the CSS!"
"Very good, so while I see you all goin to fuck monkeys I with to you a nice day"2 -
That moment, when you waste 4h looking for a bug and realize that there is a missing ';'.
That moment, in that instant, you want just a hug from your mom/dad saying you are a good boy and will reach the top.10 -
Rock up at work 10:30.
"What are you doing out your wanking chariot this early?"
"Aye, was there a fire where you live or something?"
Good thing I have flexitime!1 -

Going to the gym really helps with concentration and may give you time to focus on things that are unresolved on your codebase.
It will also make you sexy as hell. Being sexy as all hell is good and gold.
Remember that10 -
It's funny how 7 years of experience in coding made me a professional repairman.
You'll be surprised how good you are at repairing broken screen on your relatives phone just because you know C#... 😭1 -
That moment when you decide to look why Vim's regex rules are a bit inconsistent and find out this program has a setting called "very magic".
Today is a good day.4 -
Imposter syndrome. I’m SICK of hearing people say that they have imposter syndrome.
Imposter syndrome literally means that you are good at your job but you BELIEVE you are a fraud / not worthy / are going to get “found out”.
By self identifying as having imposter syndrome, then by definition that means you in fact DO NOT have imposter syndrome.
If you DID have imposter syndrome then you would just think you were bad at your job.5 -
Damn that's a lot of hours every day. He/she has top 1 on Wakatime leaderboards.
Good job, whoever you are.
(Oh, and guess that a Mac CAN be used as a dev machine 😉)7 -
Why are vegans & mac users so fucking annoying.
Eat what you like.
Use what you like.
Why tf you have to tell me what you eat & what you use is the only good thing in the world. Stop going 'how can you eat that?' & 'how can you use that?' Keep it to yourself 🔫😠6 -
You guys are cool and all but it's a little strange being in a community centred around releasing negativity when ideally you need good vibes..15
-
Cause heaps of YouTube tutorials are crap nowadays, I’d like to collect your favorites here. And when you are in need look up good channels here.
I’ll start with mine:
Jacob Sorber (C / Unix)
Creel (general low level stuff)
The Cherno (C++)8 -
Manager asked me once
"how many lines of code does a good developer write"
 i was so shocked i couldnt answer him straight with a good answer. tried telling him that we are not a factory making nails, i dont know. what would you have said to him?14 -
When you wanna lunch a product and all domains with good names are taken; and when you find a good domain, the twitter handle is taken by an egg!!

That moment of feeling ..
When you are working month with Vuejs
and then you see articles like
Don't read VueJS it is worthless and no jobs are there for VueJS..
But then also feel good that Vuejs is mostly inspired from Angular and ReactJS and it willl be easy to migrate :)8 -
Got fired today due to one big cunt who just joined to sabotage all junior devs because his older than all of us, im dissapointed at how arrogant some of you old devs are, the good old days development houses used to be fun and young, i respect all of you with great heart but we are not trying to compete with you if we know knew tech better than you, times have changed, if you are still dumb about bootstrap dont hate on anyone but yourself. Grow deFaQuPndStopHating3

Black Friday is the time where you consider to buy a new laptop and finds that laptop companies don't know how to make one for programmers. Either they are shit or they are gamer laptop that have 2~4 GB of video memory you will never use and costs thousands of dollars.
Is it hard to make one with good CPU, RAM and a SSD without concluding that you are a hardcore gamer and you need an expensive video card along with it?8 -
Hey React, why won't you die?
Seriously, you are cumbersome to use, heavy as shit, awful syntax and do only the most basic reactive operations possible.
Why do you have to re-render un-changed components?
You were good when you came out, but please, get the fuck out of job requirements everywhere.17 -
Meanwhile at my place (Translation L-R):
"Wow! Are you good at hacking?"
"Please hack my neighbor's Wi-Fi"
"Download me some movies!"
"Are you good at math?"
"Please fix my phone!"
"Can you remove the virus on my computer?"
"How many hours do you sleep in one day?"
"Put some cheats on this game!"
"Please hack my boyfriend's Facebook account!"
Yep, my family and even the entire neighborhood are ignorant of what I do as a dev!
FFS I'M NOT A PC REPAIR MAN!!! 😤😤😤😠😡1 -
Is React really that good? Some say if you don't know React you are doing JS wrong. But everyone says that for everything.13
-
When people says you are good in programming they mean you will clear the exam easily.
But they don't know there is a art of writing code.
And if you stuck in the code then there is a art of debugging the code.
Who knows the both is a good programmer.2 -
"hey good job on the peepeepoopoo server, could you deploy it on this vps?"
Uh sure, i hope you are prepared for my bill at the end of the month for the devops tasks1 -
Weirdest morning in a while:
- good morning!
_ good morning
* walk over to colleagues desk to see what he’s working on pure out of interest*
_what do you want?
-nothing just curious
_do you want to fight?
-wtf?
The more i work with fellow developers the more i realize the special kind of people we actually are.8 -
I wish all of you a really good week. I hope everything works out for you and that you are content with life.3
-
One time i forgot that there are languages where you have to explicitly return stuff and spent a good 20 minutes debugging why
function a() { 2 }
didnt work11 -
Just let people who already know the things you are teaching miss the class entirely. Give them some test at the end, this is okay but do not force them to suffer the endless hours of something they are already good at just because you want them to attend.2
-
Mom: What are you doing ??
Me: Just fixing up a few bugs I encountered yesterday..
Mom: Good .. That means you are doing nothing .. Go fill up the damn water bottles ..
Me: -_- !4 -
One good thing about taking a dump at work is that no matter how senior or junior you are, the sounds are pretty much the same.5
-
The moment when you are looking at code for a good 20 mins woundering why it isn't working then you realise you havent ran the init function...
-
There is no such a thing as a good dev days. There are only bad and worse days. Unless you are millionaire and you don't have to deal with clients.
-
You ever have to work with people that are worse than you? and yet everyone in the group sees them as more competent? So much so that they get to be involved more with the projects than you are?
I hate this feeling, I'm just as good. -
Mood swings are:
When you get bored of black theme and change to light theme.
And later changing back to the good old dark theme6 -
I so much fucking hate most people
You devs are all good and cool people
Almost everyone else can eat a fucking dick
Some people are fucking disgusting
Everything is so blissful and the whole day is so bright and then you hit into a fucktard that ruins your day
Fuck you bitch you stupid fucking whore5 -
If you do `log.error("blah: " + e.getMessage())` rather than `log.error("blah: ", e)` then I will personally hunt you down, come to your house, and give you a bloody good talking to as to why stack traces are free, useful debugging tools, and you've just wasted my time by omitting it.4
-
You know what really grinds my gears?
Executive bathrooms. They get gold and marble and all kinds of fancy shit and the rest of us get a linoleum shit box. Who do they think they are? Are they too good to shit and piss with their developers. You know...the people who make the shit that makes them money?
Executives are just overpaid suits who do next to nothing while the rest of us carry their fat asses across the finish line and they are too good to take a shit with us common folk.12 -
A Google app that would let you tag good skating locations on Google maps. The idea itself wasn't stupid, there was just already a more generalized app that did a damn good job of it already. (That's how I figured out that most "like (blank) but for (blank)" project ideas are dumb)3

[Last year me]: Dammit, javascript is the worst language ever! Where are my var types? Why are there so many frameworks? Why the people are using it? Why? Why?
[Today me after updating my Linkedin profile with my javascript experience and receiving some good job offers almost instantly]: Oh good Lord, thank you for giving Mr. Eich the wisdom to create such a beautiful language, I'll build a new framework as a sacrifice to show my gratitute.1 -

FUCK THIS GUY AND WHOEVER ELSE THINKS AI HAVING THE ABILITY TO PROGRAM IS A GOOD IDEA OR SUPPORTS IT OR TRIES TO DO IT. ITS NOT AND NEVER GOING TO BE A GOOD IDEA! AI ISNT DANGEROUS UNLESS YOU DO THIS KIND OF STUPID SHIT, DO YOU WANT US TO DIE? DO YOU WANT TO REPLACE YOUR OWN JOB WITH SOME AI? ARE YOU FUCKING RETARDED?43 -
- Code reviews are good for you
- learn and understand your tools
- ask and listen
- if someone writes code for you, delete it and build it again yourself -
So I heard this story from my boss,
Boss: you applied to the open web developer job?
"Pro": yes i have designed many websites.
Boss: are you good with css?
"Pro": Yes i am really good with adobe Cs(6). -
Yesterday I had a discussion with a freelancing developer
Me: You're already earning good, why are you freelancing?
He: Freelancing is my hobby.
Me: !! Why don't you participate in some open source development? I do.
He: How much do you earn there?
Me: In terms of money? few bucks as donation for 1 coffee in a month.
He: few bucks only !!!
Me: Opensource development can be good for your career. You can get a good job or promotion....
He: I believe in certainty.
Me: Hmmm5 -
are there some graphic designers here? 😎
Do you code?
Did you learn some stuff here on devRant? What did you learn?
What do you design mostly?
How do you deal with programmers who don't obey your design specs because they're lazzy fucks? muhaha 😆
how do you think this profession will evolve in the next 10 years?
and you devs, what do you think of us? what are your experiences with designers? good and bad ones?8 -
Cookies... They are a mess. (To roughly translate what happened here) the text states: you diss-alowed cookies but to view our video you must accept them. (So far so good) If you want to watch the video, you can do that if you allow them. (Still good) to do this, remove your cookies (wait wat) and hit refresh. So... I did not allow cookies, and you set a cookie to not set cookies????2
-
I think a good path to dev education is if you are interested in it as a teen and try out coding and keep failing. Persistence and interest will bring you farther than just going straight to uni/dev school.1
-
If you are going to tell me you develop using TDD, it's a good idea to actually have tests in your test project.
-
I present to you a php framework with an "orm" that doesnt support table joins. Yes, you heard it right.
I just want to say few things to the developers community -
If you are a bad programmer, please spend your time at improving rather than writing frameworks, or making the stupid decision on using SUCH SHIT FRAMEWORK AT A CORPORATE COMPANY!
Also if you are not sure if you are a good programmer or not, chances are you aren't. That's just how it is.6 -
I got my stickers today. I got a good scare, too, when I saw it was soaked because the mailman didn't close the lid properly. The stickers are fine, thankfully.
Thank you from Canada, devRant.10 -
That moment when you are stuck trying to figure out what you are actually good at and you come up with nothing.7

PM: You developers are like craftsmen, you're so unreliable in your time estimates, I do not know why I bother asking you.
Looking up, thinking if you gave me time to investigate the issue before forcing me to give an estimate... *smile and wave*

You cant be a recognzied as a good developer, untill you are a good tester or say produce least bug free code. You should do thorough testing of your code before handing over to QA. I lacked the skill of good unit testing, so have suffered alot in past years.1

Good recruiters do not ask who are the other companies or recruiters who contacted you.
Good recruiters understand that potential applicants have greater needs than purely monetary compensation in their offers.
Good recruiters do not threaten you with a hard deadline to decide whether or not you'll accept their offer.
Good recruiters do not ask for referrals if you turn them down.
I've yet to meet a good recruiter.1 -
Looking through a former developer's drive for their projects folder is kind of like a treasure hunt, only you don't get something good at the end of it usually.
Especially when there's a good reason they're a "former" developer.

Wtf are you taking man?
You’re supposed to be an experienced engineer but what the fuck are you doing leaking null pointer exceptions everywhere you go?

Today started off like a normal day and then i got a call from my aunt and she asked if i could set up her new iPhone 8 plus. and once i got there i did and it was no biggie. and then she pulls out four more boxes and has me set all of them up for family members.
WHY DOES EVERYONE THINK IM TECH SUPPORT. it’s just so fucking annoying.3 -

Some people be like:
MAN: Are you at office?
SE: No, I'm on a airplane at 35000 feet;
MAN: While you are up there, you should write more code. After all you know that bugs won't survive at 35000 feet.
SE:(sighs and facepalms) hmm that a very good point....
MAN: plus you are closer to the cloud, so server code should run faster or with lower latency at least.
SE: (jumps off the plane)3 -
I use to work with a lot of people from all around the world, so i can say from the very first meeting if you are a good dev or not, and darn ! i hate the self confident devs who think they are the best, especially when they are junior !
I want to tell them : WAKE UP ! YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD !!7 -
How do you deal with having too much work on your back but still wanting to help people around you, because you know they are good people and trying their best but they also have too much work to do?5

@zlice I am going to ...subtweet you? (Screenshot included)
Basically, so much what you said. 100%.
You stumble your way around different companies until you find something that sits right with you.
There are so many contributing factors to the "good company" and as many definitions as everyone will value different aspects of work. Good management? Tech stack to your liking? Kick ass colleagues? Interesting product? Good work life balance? Company contributing to world's welfare?
I can go on. Each of you will decide what is good, good enough, or decent and what sacrifices and tradeoffs are acceptable.2 -

Hey devRant people !
How are you ?
I’ve a question, do you know a website like FrontendMaster, CloudAcademy or LinuxAcademy but ... for backend stuff ?
EdX, Udemy and all are very good but I would like to find a platform specialized in this topic.3 -
PMs... be wary working for sales people. They are are really good at getting you to say "Yes" to a simple project, then piling on new scope as an "upsell".
It's a skill in their domain. It's a trap in ours.2 -
How long (what % of day) are you fully focused (contentrated) on programming on average per day? How many hours is your work day? The longer the hours, the harder to stay focused we probably can agree. How are you doing in carreer - good or not, can tell as detailed as you might want to share.19

You are a "he". Clear enough.
What if after a while you notice that she is quite awesome and you start liking her.

Is this wrong?
I guess you don't want to ruin the friendship with her? Right?
What would you do?
PS: she is really awesome, and cool and uhhhh .. u get it
Sorry for the unrelated topic :/15 -

How do you deal with incompetent developers who take the glory of work because they are good at talking?7

How do you define a good codebase?
From my experience, a good codebase is a codebase that is strongly opinionated.
More rules = Better code
Honestly, i am sick of maintaining codebases written by sickos who think they are hot shit for doing what nobody else does6 -

Dear Web developers,
I'm looking to boost my skills and improve work flow. I was wondering what sort of tools, editors or platforms would you recommend? I currently use wordpress, php, jquery, sass, react, node and laravel.
I've heard about awesome ways where you can monitor project changes, something like github but with gui for design drafts and stuff.
Also I heard about good online platform for Web development, something like online sublime text where all your files are saved within cloud platform. I'm looking for something that will unify my work throughout different work places.
Lastly, are there any good sites or new technologies that are fairly popular and good to learn or research?12 -
What progress have you made?

Like seriously how fucked up are those ORMs? Prisma “yeah we support mongodb, but we will force you to write in a relational way.” I always hit on hard walls whenever ever I try an ORM in my projects.

Dependency injection and RX java and all are cool.
But I like to do good object oriented programming.
And now there are kids in start ups who see devs doing good object oriented programming as retards.
Android as a platform provides everything that you need. Why abuse a simple app with all fancy stuff when you can accomplish stuff with simple oops which takes the same amount of time ?
Am I the one feeling this way ? -
How do you guys handle the design part of your app/website if you are not very good at design? Do you use Material ui or bootstrap or do you ask someone else make the design for you?8

Programming is like religion.
- you are making sombody to obey your will
- you have limited amount of resources (churches, processors, RAM, holy items)
- when you torture it, usually it will comply but not in way you are expecting
- smashing nail with hammer is not good idea (you can run out of resources again. Getting new CPU is costly as same as getting new believer)

It is good for someone who wants to learn. Someone who want to know what the benefit, pros and cons of the tech that they are not familiar with.

Football/futbol/soccer analogy:
Frontend engineers are like strikers - you see their work, good and bad, and you don’t notice how many contribute to their success. Backend engineers are like goalies - you only really notice when they do a _bad_ job and don’t see how many things contribute to their failure.5 -

You can talk for a lifetime of improvement, but what can you do when your boss sits near you and dictates his changes to the app you're working on?
Don't forget, this changes are on the opposite place of good common sense, interface guidelines (iOS and material) and TASTE. -
I think motivation and constant improvement are the biggest challenges, but I guess these are applicable to life in general. On a dev prespective one of the biggest challenges was the jump from college work to job work. The professional environment brings some responsibilities that in college you just don't have. Good side, in most cases, when you get home you don't have to think about it.

At what point does the micro management and fear of failure make it so you can’t even take the simplest feature without melting down?1

- Never lie, if you get the job and they find out you lied on something you have a problem
- Never say "oh this company is too good it will never accept me with my grades", Usually bigger companies have an assessment center where you can show that you are good for this job

Always befriend your recruiters and shoot them straight. They are on your team and it’s in both of your best interests to find you a good spot.

This begs the question: how do you define being good at programming? How can you tell if you are actually good or just think you are?
Having asked that, I think I’m getting there... by reading other people’s code, by listening to feedback from better devs than I am, by asking questions and discussing matters I may not fully comprehend, by reading books and articles, by trial and error and by constantly seeking new concepts, languages and other relevant matters to learn. That’s how one becomes better - when one is good, is another story altogether. -
You now you work at a good job when you download a ISO image of DVD size and the speed max is the server on the other end where you are downloading from.

So many people complain on how js is stupid (I did too not long ago), but at the same time you know there are good parts in it if there are books literally called "js: the good parts". So I've been thinking, why not make a subscript of it with all the recognised bad bits cut out? What do you guys think about that? Too bad I'm too underskilled to pull that off alone 😥1

I hate it when colleagues name their commits with a non descriptive name like "minor changes", "minor fixes", "small changes" and so on. I know that good naming is a difficult task in software development, but do I expect to much when I want them to explain shortly what exactly they changed since the last commit?
Good commit messages are always helpful if you want to do good PR reviews and furthermore if you want to go back to an older commit because someone fucked something up.
Don't get me wrong, my colleagues are great people and great developers, but some of them ignore the fact that good commit messages might be useful in the future for others and themselves -

Software Installation happens through "point and click", also does system configuration and infrastructure. Servers are _pets_ and get reused and re-purposed after decommissioning. Command Lines, Terminals and scripting languages are buh and scary; We don't use them. Repetitive tasks are good, because once you know them you can do them faster and better. Windows servers are good, because we want to be like Microsoft ...2

If you ever are looking for some language assessment, avoid linkedIn ones like the plague.
Half the Python questions are obscure nonsense nobody ever uses. I couldn’t pass that.
The C one on the other hand was actually more practical and easier, go figure.
Don’t feel down if you don’t pass them because they are hardly a good metric of proficiency. Apply for some actual full fledged certifications instead. -

Programming is like when you need to clean up cables (make them look better).

Is it a good approach to have a master SSL key for all your servers when making the authentication?
I am a Developer, but when you work in a company with two developers and you are the senior one you have to learn a lot of stuffs. I am learning more in depth things about how to secure the servers and network.
Now, I am expanding the servers. Splitting the code and database in three different servers (code, Master DB, Slave DB) and configuring Master-Slave databases.
My questions are:
1. Is it a good approach to have a master SSL key for all your servers?
2. Is is a good approach to use the same SSL key for Master database server and Slave database server?
Any other suggestions are welcome.
Thank You in advance!2 -

What CEOs,CTOs , Team Leaders and developers think about those kind a job applications -
random rant:
as much as I like manjaro, and antergos is very nice looking, and sometimes arch bang is just easy and good:
they are not arch. yes they are arch-based. but you are not an arch user. you are a manjaro/antergos user. please do not call yourself arch users. and especially do not ask questions in the arch forums. all of these arch-based distros have their own forums for a reason.
that is all...3
